Wearing pink shirts and waving pink towels, more than 1,500 Delta elementary students showed that bullying is not cool on Pink Shirt Day at the Battle of the Badges hockey game Wednesday morning. The game pitted Delta police officers against Delta firefighters
at North Delta’s Sungod Arena, won 4-3 by the firefighters. The Grade 6/7 students, which represented 13 schools from across the Delta district, were encouraged to cheer on the teams and to make posters spreading their anti-bullying messages. Fire Chief Dan Copeland said it was an unbelievable turnout for such a great cause.
“We wanted to see the kids be kind, spread the feelings of inclusiveness and diversity,” Copeland said. “The guys are all out here having a good time and it’s all in the spirit of camaraderie and for the kids to see that it sends a really good message.” Police Chief Neil Dubord said when the whole community pulls together, special things can
happen. “I don’t think you see this in many other communities. Delta is a special place,” Dubord said. “I think the message is clear — bullying is not accepted anymore. We don’t like bullies, the police don’t like bullies, so it’s about kindness, respect and doing unto others as we do unto ourselves.” FIRST: see Page 6

Final session in Victoria
Huntington critical of budget as her last sitting of the legislature gets underway SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
She’s still hard at work in the final stretch of what’s been a remarkable time in B.C. politics. Two-term independent MLA Vicki Huntington has begun her final legislative session representing Delta South after the surprise announcement last month that she won’t be seeking a third term in this May’s provincial election in order to concentrate on her health. The first independent in many decades to be elected back in 2009, and first ever to be re-elected four years later, Huntington wasted no time taking aim this week at the Liberal government’s budget, saying it’s little more than posturing for the upcoming election. The budget includes new money for such areas as education, while also promising things such as monthly MSP premiums being cut in half for about one million British Columbians starting next year. “At the end of the day, this is an election budget,” said Huntington. “Until the government moves our elections to the fall, election-year budgets will always be unscrutinized, vote-buying exercises. These are election platform documents for the governing party, paid for by the taxpayer. MLAs will return in a few months for a new budget, to do it all over again.” Huntington said she
Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington on the front steps of the legislature in Victoria. has advocated for moving the fixed election date to the fall, beginning with the 2021 election, to allow election-year budgets to be reviewed, voted on and tested. She also had other concerns with the budget, saying the $50 monthly increase for persons with disabilities is welcome but that doesn’t even return what was clawed back, while she wonders if the MSP cuts are sustainable. Some of her other concerns include no money being available to restore school bus service in Delta, even though the government committed $45 million in new funding to eliminate school bus fees. Huntington introduced legislation this month to

outlaw so-called “cash-foraccess” fundraisers and to take action on campaign finance reform, noting the issue reared its head in 2016 when it was revealed donors were paying $10,000 for private dinners with the premier. Meanwhile, she recently noted she personally received an assurance from the regional director of highways that a visible improvement in the lighting system would be made inside the George Massey Tunnel. Of course, her phone was ringing off the hook earlier this month for interview requests when she revealed she was the source who informed the media of a privacy breach on the Liberal website, which didn’t require hack-
ing. She made the revelation after Premier Christy Clark accused the NDP of hacking. It’s all par for the course for the independent, who told the Optimist at the legislature last week that it wasn’t easy making the decision not to run again. “I have some regret and guilt stepping away from such a unique position. We created an independent role and I don’t want to see that lost,” she said. She said she feels fortunate having such a superb constituency office in Delta with staff who are “extraordinary in their job.” It’s an office that has a lot of compassion and willing to do what it takes to fix a problem, she said. “There’s a lot of need in South Delta and our office

sees most of it.” Noting an MLA needs to understand how the bureaucracy works, Huntington also feels fortunate she was able to hit the ground running, having been treated fairly and given a main floor office in the legislature with additional room for two capable staffers. They’re very good at research, she said. Huntington noted the NDP has also been quite amicable when it came to negotiating speaking time in the legislature, although that had to be cut in half when the Green’s Andrew Weaver was elected. She added she’ll miss the people she’s got to know in Victoria, as well as the historic legislature building on Victoria’s waterfront.

Civic heritage awards
Three Heritage Awards of Merit were handed out at Delta council’s weekly meeting Monday to begin the second week of Delta’s Heritage Celebration. Coun. Ian Paton, on behalf of Mayor Lois Jackson, gave recognition to Andres Homes, as well as Spencer and Ellie Andres, for the preservation and restoration of the Niemetz Residence. Located on 48th Avenue, it’s the site of Ladner’s first public school, built in 1893. It was destroyed by fire in the 1940s, replaced by a Craftsman-style bungalow designed by retired
Alberta farmer Joseph Niemetz. More recently, council allowed Andres Homes to subdivide the property into five lots while restoring the old home. Andres Homes was also recognized for building the new homes to be sensitive to the heritage of the Niemetz Residence. Also receiving awards were several individuals and groups for the Boundary Bay Airport Memorial Cenotaph and Air Cadet Commemorative Pathway and Gary Manuel for his beautification and historic marker project in North Delta’s Huff Corridor.

A fixture in Ladner Village for more than 30 years will soon be closing its doors. Ladner Village Hardware owner James Price, who has owned the Delta Street store for the past 16 years, is shutting it down and heading into retirement. He has no fixed date for the closure, but estimates it will be take at least two to three months to clear out the store’s inventory. “My main supplier of product is closing operations and I won’t have a primary source for goods. There are other small suppliers, but the main supplier who sells me all my seasonal goods that I rely on has decided to close up shop,” said Price. Price said his customers have been very loyal and he’s thankful for the relationships he has built over the years. “I can write a book of

Murphy’s Law

TED MURPHY
t’s heartening to see civic politicians have acknowledged the error of their ways and have backtracked on recently imposed regulations for secondary suites. The impetus for the now-abandoned policy was to ensure that suites pay their fair share when it comes to utilities, but that laudable goal took a distrustful turn when the ability to make a statutory declaration was eliminated. Homeowners that had a suite, but didn’t rent it out, used to be able to sign a document exempting them from additional utility costs. By removing that provision, Delta left homeowners with the impression that either it didn’t buy the notion the suite was unoccupied and/or that municipal hall had concocted an unabashed cash grab, neither of which sat too well with those affected by the changes. Ensuring suites pay their fair share made sense, but targeting those that had previously signed declarations seemed like a curious approach. I’m sure Delta has received some fraudulent declarations over the years, but by and large these are homeowners that play by the rules. They are the ones that came forward, put up their hands and acknowledged their homes contain suites. Chances are if you’re looking to avoid paying fees associated with a secondary suite you’re going to do your utmost to fly under the radar so no one over at municipal hall is aware. When you’re talking about suite cheats, I suspect there are far more of those kinds of landlords than ones who go to the trouble of falsifying declarations. After some not so gentle persuasion, council members unanimously came to that same conclusion. Delta tells us the changes were made in response to community feedback, which is a polite way of saying that a whole bunch of homeowners were royally ticked off by what had transpired. Just because we’re reverting to the previous policy, that doesn’t mean Delta should take its foot off the gas when chasing suite cheats. Meters will help determine water use and the municipal website makes it easy for residents to check whether the suite next door is legal and to report those that aren’t. Civic officials should keep up the pressure, but if we’ve learned anything from this, it’s that efforts should be targeted where they belong.
We could all be paying dearly for urban sprawl from bridge
W
e need to protect our community from urban sprawl. There will be incredible pressure on Delta to develop should the bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel be built. Residential development will not be the only source of pressure. The CEO for the Port of Vancouver has made it clear the port wants access to more land for industrial purposes. This has caused speculation. Speculation always drives up land prices. Recently the City of Vancouver raised the fees for development permits. They made it clear that the costs for development are greater than the income that permits generate. This means that the capital costs for all development is subsidized by the taxpayer. In a city like Vancouver where infrastructure is largely in place, this is a lesser concern. Development follows high density zoning patterns. Once density is achieved, the increase in tax base helps cover the operating costs of that infrastructure. The operating costs of servicing infrastructure (i.e. roads, sewers and amenities) is less likely to be covered for a municipality like Delta. The only thing that will improve this is density. It will take many years for that kind of den-
Community Comment
PETER VAN DER VELDEN sity to be in place. For all those years the residents of Delta will be covering not only the capital costs for development, they will be subsidizing the operating costs. In order for this density to happen in Delta, we lose farmland. This encroachment of farmland is happening across the world. Populations increase and farmland is diminishing everywhere. This makes it increasingly difficult for production levels to keep up with world needs. Add to that the climatic difficulties we’re experiencing and we find our grocery costs increasing every year. Water shortages, floods, frost and hail storms in temperate zones are now regular occurrences. All this makes it ever more important to protect the farmland we have. To suggest that we can just import our food is irresponsible. We have the opportunity now
to protect our food needs and not be reliant on imports. Selfsufficiency will be instrumental to Canada’s well-being. This will require planning on a scale not seen before. Industrial and residential growth needs to be planned along with infrastructure needs and preservation of our agricultural land base. The only way this can be achieved is through co-operation and governmental transparency. Presently our communities aren’t so much planned as they are politicized. Decisions are made in isolation with little value placed on community input. Without clear reasoning from our politicians an atmosphere of distrust is created. B.C.’s triple delete scandal has made a mockery of our freedom of information access to government decisions. Many documents are now redacted in order to protect certain parties. If those “certain parties” are not the citizens of B.C., who are they? In order for our communities to be planned and successful, our democratic process has to serve us. Our values need to be protected as well as our assets. Without due process or careful planning our quality of life will deteriorate and be less than it can be. DRIVER/CARRIER AGENT WANTED
East Ladner resident would like coffee shop in neighbourhood Editor: My husband and I are relatively new residents of South Delta, and live in the neighbourhood where the Tim Horton’s would have been located if the rezoning application had passed. One of the arguments used to reject the application in East Ladner was idling cars at the drivethru. Despite this concern, I think a Tim Hortons would be a welcome addition to our neighbourhood for a couple of reasons. First of all, the closest quick-service restaurant to the residents of East Ladner is probably McDonald’s. Also, the nearest Tim Hortons are located at the Matthews Exchange, Tsawwassen Town Centre and in Tsawwassen Mills. While all of these restaurants are within driving distance, they are certainly not within walking distance of 64th Street
The Delta Optimist is looking for a person to deliver bundles to carriers twice a week, every Wednesday and Friday. Must have reliable van (cargo preferred) or covered truck, a valid drivers license, and be willing to work late night/early mornings. Contact Dave Hamilton at 604-946-4451 or distribution@delta-optimist.com
Delta council rejected an application to build a Tim Hortons in East Ladner. and Ladner Trunk in East Ladner (unless, of course, one wants to walk 20 minutes over the green overpass to get a Big Mac). If the Tim Hortons zoning application had been approved in East Ladner, then I believe many residents in the Holly Park
area would not drive to get their double-doubles, but would walk or bike there. Another reason for approving a Tim Hortons in East Ladner would have been to support local employment. As a person in my mid-50s who is underemployed, I would
have been the first person to stand in line (or apply online) for an opportunity to work within walking distance of my home. It’s time to wake up, smell the coffee and approve this rezoning application next time. A. Cameron
Voter wants riding to stick with independent
Editor: Re: Independent joins race, Feb. 17 South Delta has made history twice by voting independent Vicki Huntington as our representative to the provincial government. She has spoken freely for our community, for farmland and for protection of the Fraser estuary, which has global
significance for salmon and migratory birds. Our hospital and community services have benefitted from her strong advocacy. Huntington has also been free to represent all of B.C. by condemning cash-for-access fundraisers and big money buying politicians for contracts and legislative backing. She has spoken
against triple-deleting of vital government information after freedom of information requests for origins of the over-sized, overpriced planned bridge have come up empty. Huntington represents true democracy at work unfettered by deceitful propaganda and misleading promises with hidden agendas.

Fortunately, South Delta has the opportunity to keep up our independent tradition. Lifetime Ladner resident Nicholas Wong has agreed to run. He has youth, optimism and a firm commitment to preserve the quality of life in South Delta. Let’s continue making history by voting independent again. Susan Jones
Batgirl is a 50lb female pitbull who is around 3 years old. You can tell by her HUGE ears how she got her name She likes to snuggle in your lap, play and give kisses. She LOVES toys, and likes to jump for them and play tug of war. She thinks it’s fun to growl while she plays, but still wag her tail to let you know that she’s just teasing BatGirl is good with big and small dogs who respect her space and don’t bark at her, though she is greedy and doesn’t like to share HER toys! We think she could be good with cats in time, but haven’t been able to fully test it out. She is ok on leash, great in her crate and housebroken. As with all of our dogs, she is spayed and up to date on all shots and vaccines. for more information, please email us at pbandchi@gmail.com or call

Rapid transit only goes where there’s population
Canadian flag flying at Mills brings a smile to his face
Editor: Re: Largest flag in shoddy condition, letter to the editor, Feb. 17 Wow! Every morning I come down the 52nd Street hill on my way to work I enjoy seeing the Canadian flag billowing in the wind atop the new
mall. It brings a smile to my face and reminds me that I am lucky to live where I do. But it appears that Margot Millen finds it “embarrassing” and “unforgivable” that the flag is a bit worn. I might suggest that rather than being worried
about this and criticizing those who are actually flying our flag on Flag Day her time might be better spent convincing those who don’t fly our flag to do so. But I suspect she isn’t as much worried about our flag as some other issue? If so, then I suggest
she might want to be a bit more forthright in her comments and a tad less disingenuous and leave our beautiful flag out of this. To those who fly our flag — and especially those who do so on Flag Day — I offer my humble thanks. Murray Pratt

Seniors WE ARE TOLD THAT
A WILL IS YOUR MOST PERSONAL DOCUMENT
WE NEED MORE…
VITAMIN D
When completed properly, a will can provide a sense of peace that comes from knowing that your wishes are recorded and your loved ones are cared for. More than a simple outline of the final distribution of your property, a will is an occasion to plan for the financial support of people and projects that you actively support during your lifetime. It can also be the time to finally help those people and groups that you always intended to help but didn’t have the resources to do so.
THE BULBS we use help to activate VITAMIN D
Remember to consider your own wishes and feelings. A will is an important document, but if it doesn’t express your wishes, it’s not done well. Talk it over. Consider the future. Make a draft. Think again. Here are other essential points to address to avoid difficulties after you die: • Make sure only one will exists. • Determine who you want as your executor, the person who will carry out your wishes in settling your estate. • Carefully plan for your dependents. • Name a guardian for young children. • Detail specific monies or gifts to friends, relatives or charities. • Consider those who mean a lot to you for the residue of your estate. Your church, a charity, or a favourite organization like Amnesty International, can be on this list. • Put in writing any important details of your desired funeral arrangements. Laws about will-making and taxes vary from province to province, and the specific wording to ensure your wishes are carried out may require the help of a lawyer. Experts strongly recommend that you seek legal advice when making out your will..

life together as a body. Each one of us in the body has particular tasks but together — with Christ as our “head” — we are called to spread the word of God’s love and new life to the world. Church is not a set of beliefs, but builds a life of faith. Church is not a building or a religious program, but “church” is God’s people following the will of God and working to bring about the Kingdom of God — a place where God’s love and grace abounds. The wonderful thing is, while we may not express our work in similar ways, we’re all “church” — God’s people, loving as we have been loved.

It’s interesting to hear folks talk about the church these days. Since it seems to be a forbidden thing to talk about religion or politics at a gathering, it seems like the “church” has wide shoulders for lots of controversy and debate. One person shared their opinion of church the other day and I was fascinated by the conclusions reached. One conclusion seems to be, “The church is going to die, unless children and parents start going back to church.” But more puzzling to me is the belief “that a strong … (you can add the narrative) will save our church.” Somewhere along the way, we have lost a true

outh Delta Secondary theatre students will be taking a trip back to the 1920s with their latest production. Thoroughly Modern Millie runs next week at the high school’s Equinox Theatre and drama teacher Jennifer Harbott says the musical is uplifting and full of energy.
“The kids have tons of energy and they’ve put a lot of love into it as well,” she says. SDSS’ Thoroughly Modern Millie is based on the 1967 Julie Andrews film of the same name. The story follows Millie, a young woman who has plans to marry her wealthy boss. The really challenging musical is a big undertaking, says Harbott. “It’s very highly technical,” she says, noting
that she’s impressed and excited as to how it’s come along. There’s a cast of about 60 while approximately 130 students in total are working on the production. Grade 12 student Shelby Satterthwaite plays Millie. She learned to tap dance for the role. “It was a cool experience to get to do that. It was something I wanted to learn and I’m glad I finally got to learn how to do it,”
she says. Satterthwaite says the audiences will be able to see that the performers love being on stage. “I think you can really see the work that we’ve put into it, especially [with the play] being really challenging musically. The band and everybody singing on stage, it’s hard music to learn, and I think people will be really impressed with the way the music comes together with the acting and the
dancing.” The musical, which is for all ages, goes from Tuesday, Feb. 28 to Saturday, March 4. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and curtain is set for 7 p.m. There are matinees on the Tuesday and Friday at 12:30 p.m. with doors at noon. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors/ students. Bluesman Jim Byrnes will be back at Genesis Theatre in Ladner next Friday. The award-winning Vancouver blues musician has been performing professionally for over 50 years and has visited the Ladner venue, which has been newly renovated, a few times over that stretch. This time he says he plans on playing some tunes from his latest album, St. Louis Times, as well as a real mix of music from over the course of his
career. Byrnes is a St. Louis, Missouri native and notes the 2014 record is about the place he used to call home. “In a lot of ways it was a very personal thing because those years that you spend growing up, they stay with you,” he says. “It’s funny, as you get to a certain age you’re able to put a lot of those memories in a closet somewhere or in a drawer and you get a certain time of your life and the drawer opens up and a lot of stuff comes back to you.” Byrnes, a longtime

Natural gas. Good for B.C.
For Dan Helmer of Moody Ales, it’s all about creating a good buzz about local and seasonall craft beers.
Affordable natural gas is an efficient nt energy source for heating the brewing kettles at this Port Moody brewery, and it helps keep the warehouse and tasting room at just the right temperature to enjoy the finished product. That’s energy at work.

Ladner author and illustrator Ashley Spires will see one of her children’s books be turned into a short film. Animation company Nelvana, in association with Kids Can Press, announced last week production is set to start on a 22-minute film based on Spires’ The Most Magnificent Thing. “I am over the moon that this book is being made into a short film,” says Spires. “As a child I was obsessed with all things animation so having my story and characters come to life in this way is a dream come true.” The story is about a girl who tries to make something (The Most Magnificent Thing) but struggles when her creations don’t look exactly how she envisioned them, explains Spires, adding it’s a book about perseverance and learning from your

First off, let’s get this out of the way. No, you do not have to be sore after each and every workout. Muscle soreness does not dictate a great workout. I get that question posed to me a lot. I even have clients who don’t feel like they got a good enough workout unless they are sore the next day. These clients would make horrible torture victims. I’m just saying. I’ve written about why we are sore after a workout before as physiologically muscle soreness is nothing more than tiny micro-tears to the muscle tissue due to excessive loads (like heavy weights), high impact (such as jumping and plyometrics), continuous eccentric loading of the muscle (running downhill) or just plain ol’ too much, too soon training. These micro-tears cause inflammation, and this in turn causes our muscles to be sore. In the 24 to 48 hours after the workout these tears quickly start to rebuild into stronger and denser muscle fibers. One of the best ways to prevent sore muscles is to warm-up properly before your workout. Yup, your recovery is
going to begin with those first few minutes of your workout. Make sure that you give your body ample time to get ready for the stresses that you are about to place on it with your workout. A good warm-up should address all the major joints (neck, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles) and muscles, and keep you dynamically moving for at least five minutes (preferably eight to 10 minutes). A good warm-up should also take about 50 per cent of your effort. You aren’t trying to break any records with a warm-up. You are simply preparing the body for what you are about to do. The second key to reducing muscle soreness after a workout is to eat some protein afterwards. Any protein source, plant or animal-based, will help with the tissue re-building process. Protein contains important amino acids that are needed to repair the micro-tears that we have done to our muscles. Research has also shown the body responds best to protein that is ingested throughout our day. So instead of having one large protein-rich meal (which is dinner for a lot of us), spread your intake out throughout the day. Aim for 0.8 to 1.5 grams (depending on how active you are) of protein per pound of body weight. Protein, after a workout, also works better when combined with some carbs and good fats. Try a protein shake with coconut oil and berries, or turkey slices and an apple, mixed
nuts and some beef jerky. Another great technique at easing muscle soreness is to soak in Epsom salt. Epsom salt, or magnesium sulfate, is a natural compound that is known for its ability to reduce inflammation, ease stress and flush out toxins from the body. Magnesium is also a force to be reckoned with in the body. It is responsible for over 300 enzyme reactions, including muscle contraction and energy production. By soaking in Epsom salts we are not only enjoying the benefits that a long, warm soak in the tub can provide us, we are also absorbing the magnesium in the skin, which in turn helps us to recover quicker. The final tip to easing muscle soreness is to pay attention to what you are eating. Eat anti-inflammatory foods, such as turmeric, ginger, fatty fish, vegetables and fruit. In addition, try some cherry juice. The antioxidants found in cherries, anthocyanins, are believed to help reduce inflammation and ease muscle soreness. And, I saved the best for last, grab a cup of Joe. Studies and research are now showing that caffeine is associated with pain reduction and performance enhancement. So, I guess I’ll be seeing ya at Stir Coffee House or Petra’s. PJ Wren is a local personal trainer and writer in the Delta area. Delta Skating Club’s juvenile team “Solar Ice” came through with a silver medal performance during the recent West Coast Challenge Cup at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The event attracted 19 teams from across the Lower Mainland.
DSC synchro skating team thrives on home ice
The Delta Skating Club played host to19 synchronized skating teams from across the Lower Mainland earlier this month for the West Coast Challenge Cup at the Ladner Leisure Centre. Solar Ice, DSC’s juvenile team, took home the silver medal at the West Coast Challenge
Cup. “It was a very close competition and I am very proud of our skaters and what they’ve achieved. It’s a great team sport and we’re just so happy skating and doing something that we all love,” said coach Jackie Christoff.
Solar Ice, has been working very hard as a team for the last few years perfecting their presentation and elements. They have received medals in their last three competitions and hope to continue the winning streak next season.
DeltaGymnasticsstaffmemberappointed for national recreational program project
A senior staff member of Delta Gymnastics has been selected for a revitalization project to revamp the way recreational gymnastics programs are delivered to all children throughout Canada. “We are very proud that Richard Woo, a long-time member of our staff, was selected to represent B.C. on Gymnastics Canada’s CanGym Revitalization Project Resource Team,” said Ana Arciniega, Delta Gymnastics Executive Director. “Gymnastics BC assessed all candidates who applied and based on Richard’s demonstrated leadership in recreational gymnastics programming, knowledge, skills and experience in his field, he was selected to take part in this exciting five-year initiative.” The current CanGym program includes three levels of skill progressions based on Gymnastics
Richard Woo Canada’s fun, fitness and fundamentals Educational Philosophy, which helps to create a friendly and stimulating environment for all participants.
Each level focuses on mastering fundamental movement patterns, progressing to mastering fundamental skills on apparatus and continuing to mastering identified target skills. “Much like learning math, movement is based on building blocks of progressive skills,” explained Arciniega. “As you would not be able to teach a child to learn division before mastering addition, in movement you cannot teach certain skills until the body has prepared itself to accomplish a certain movement.” After consultation done by Gymnastics Canada with coaches, administrators, club owners and parents, a number of suggestions were brought forward. “The selected team from across Canada have the goal of reviewing the skills inventory currently being taught, develop content,

support materials and tools for the CanGym program to be more comprehensive and accessible,” added Arciniega. The cross-Canada team met earlier this month in Toronto to start working on the revised philosophy and first phase of development of the revitalization project. “I am very excited with the ideas, passion and expertise of this team,” said Woo. “Our ideas align in the changes and improvements we want to make on how we teach gymnastics as the foundation of all sport for children and youth in different stages of development.” Delta Gymnastics Society offers a variety of programs from infants to seniors at their Ladner facility. Hawkslookingtowrapupseriesathometonight Delta Ice Hawks responded to a little early adversity in prompt fashion and are poised to advance to the next round of the Pacific Junior Hockey League playoffs. After dropping a 3-2 game one decision to the North Vancouver Wolf Pack, the Hawks swiftly gained control of the series by winning three straight over a four-night stretch. They can now wrap up the series tonight when game five takes place at the Ladner Leisure Centre at 7:35 p.m. Delta seized momentum thanks to quick starts and the goaltending of Jordan Naylor. The Hawks have outscored the Wolf Pack 6-0 in the opening period over the last three games and cruised to impressive back-to-back road victories in the process. Naylor has been superb over that stretch, earning first star honours in Saturday’s 6-2 game three triumph with 39 saves. The 17-year-old former Team B.C. goalie then made 35 more stops Monday in a 5-1

The play of rookie goaltender Jordan Naylor has helped the Delta Ice Hawks open up a 3-1 series lead on the North Vancouver Wolf Pack in their quarter-final series. Game five goes at 7:35 p.m. tonight in Ladner. win. So far in the series, he has a goals against average of 2.26 and a save percentage of .939. The Ice Hawks have also
received plenty of offence, led by a pair of goals from Brad Crompton in game four. Cam Cuthbert, Jordan Deyrmenjian and
Gary Dhaliwal also scored. Deyrmenjian had two goals in Saturday’s win, with singles to Tyson Lin, Harris Pearce and
Mark Trotman as Delta took advantage of North Vancouver penalty trouble to open up a commanding 5-0 second period lead.
Delta had earlier evened the series with a 4-3 game two win in Ladner last Friday. The Wolf Pack set up an interesting finish with a pair of goals in the final two minutes but could get no closer. The return of Dhaliwal and Lin from injuries has also been a boost for the Ice Hawks. Both had missed the last two weeks of the regular season as well as game one. Head coach Darren Naylor made it clear down the regular season homestretch how finishing first in the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s Tom Shaw Conference would provide a more favourable post-season path. His team was 26 points better than the Wolf Pack and took five of six games in the season series. Meanwhile, the second place Grandview Steelers have had their hands full with the third place Richmond Sockeyes. That series stood at 3-2 for Grandview, heading into game six last night in Richmond. The last two were decided in overtime.

MULLAN, Archie Steven (Steve) June 02, 1959 - February 06, 2017 Steve Mullan, a faithful, devoted husband, and beloved dad passed away peacefully on the morning of February 06, 2017 at Delta Hospital after losing a courageous fight with cancer. Steve was born in Trail, BC and moved to Tsawwassen in the 1960s and attended South Park Elementary and South Delta Secondary School. After High School, he attended UBC and graduated with a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Political Science. He pursued his career and passion at WorkSafe BC, Ministry of Labour and as part of the OH&S team at Canada Post. He was predeceased by his brother Gordon in 2016. Steve was a caring, thoughtful, compassionate human being and a proud Canadian. He was a beloved member of the community, always ready to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. He enjoyed being surrounded by Ariel’s many friends and had a special connection with them. Steve’s best treasured memories were the times he spent at the cottage at St. Mary Lake with his daughter, wife and the cats (Beeley, Baloo, and Mowgli). He cherished his garden in the Spring, the Summer swims in the lake, hiking in the Fall, and the quiet family times in the Winter. He is survived by his greatest gift of all, his beloved daughter Ariel J. Mullan, Jespal Bal (wife), Archie and Donna (parents), Heather (sister) and cousins. A tribute will be held at Tsawwassen United Church at 693 53rd St. in Tsawwassen at 1:00pm on Saturday, April 22, 2017. We ask in lieu of flowers to make a donation to Children’s Hospital. The family would also like to thank Dr. C Martin, the staff at View Medical Clinic and Matt from SD Home Health Office. “Daddy, daddy you are the key to my heart, he is one who sets me free” by Ariel J Mullan- in memory of Steve.

TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the: Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711 Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email: inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.
