Delta firefighters have been providing advanced medical care to accident and fire victims since June 2015. said Jackson. “When the paramedics get there all the vitals are done and the paramedics can then know exactly where that patient is and they have a baseline from which to work. Working together like this has been good for the people of Delta and that’s my main concern. “As long as this is working for this community, I will stand by it.” Dr. William Dick, vice president of medical programs for BC Emergency Health Services, said there has been good cooperation. “Every month they send us the call logs and I’ve reviewed the patient care that has been occurring and I have had no con-

cerns,” said Dick. “We are building a good trustworthy relationship and when there has been an issue, there has been no problem calling them and asking them just to change this or that. “The BC Ambulance (Service) crews are working well with them on the street. Things are much better than they were in the sense of cooperation and I think their desire to give that enhanced patient experience. There have been no downsides to it.” Copeland said firefighters can get to most accident scenes within three to eight minutes, while paramedics are 10 minutes or greater behind. “We cover a large

geographic area and cars (ambulances) are dispatched to service throughout the Metro Vancouver area,” said Copeland. “We’ve had cars from White Rock, Burnaby, Abbotsford, Richmond and Vancouver. Yes, the cars are available at the beginning of our shift in Tsawwassen, Ladner or North Delta, but throughout the shift, those cars could be anywhere. “And this has nothing to do with the front-line paramedics. They are outstanding and they work very well with our firefighters. The focus is always on the patient and has never been about us replacing the work of the paramedics.”

Province to announce funding for Delta transition house SANDOR GYARMATI

A transition house for women and their children seeking safety from domestic violence is coming to Delta.

Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton and others will be on hand at a press conference at municipal hall today to announce that funding will be made available for a facility. B.C. Housing has pur-

chased an eight-bedroom home and the province will be going out to tender for a service provider. Last fall, a working group led by the Canadian Federation of University Women South Delta made

public their concern that it had secured a house from the Corporation of Delta for a transition home but government operating dollars weren’t available. Saying it was a good idea when he learned of

the proposal, Hamilton noted the request came in when the province was in the middle of a budget cycle. Now the money is available and an even better house has been obtained, he said.

Seamus Seamus is a two year old male pitbull mix around 60lbs. He is good with other dogs, big and small, that can respect his space and not be dominant. He like to chase kitties though, so no cats in the home for him. Small children make him nervous so he wants a home with mature 12+ kids. We think he would be ideal in a home with an active couple so that he could be their “kid”! He is good on leash with his EasyWalk harness and loves car rides! He would be a great hiking buddy or a companion for an more active family. He adores being with people and sometimes can have some anxiety when left alone, but it has been hit and miss, so we wouldn’t consider him having full separation anxiety. Seamus is crate trained, housebroken, neutered and up to date on shots and vaccines!

Three athletes shared their personal stories of life, competition and faith at the 43rd edition of the Delta Leadership Prayer Breakfast last Saturday at the Tsawwassen Springs ballroom. Ben Josephson, head coach of the men’s volleyball team at Trinity Western University, Adam Froese, a member of Canada’s field hockey team at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, and Natalie Boyd, a Canadian Interuniversity Sport champion and national level soccer player, addressed the crowd. Pastor Rick Burdett of South Delta Baptist Church led the event in prayer. For over four decades, the breakfast has provided an opportunity for people to gather as a reminder that many people in public office, as well as those in the private sector, still place a high priority on Christian values and guidance from God. Tsawwassen Springs has submitted an application to Delta to revise the last two condo buildings in the golf course development.

that would not apply to smaller, less expensive units. Bordered by Highway 17 and 52nd Street, the original development received approval in 2008 after a lengthy public hearing. Although the number of condos could be going down, the development, overall, could grow even larger because more recently Toigo purchased an adjacent property with the intent of taking most of it out of the Agricultural Land Reserve to build 60 townhomes. The additional townhouse plan is still in the application phase. Developed by Talisman Homes and Shato Holdings, Tsawwassen Springs will have about 500 housing units, from condos to single-family, when all phases are completed in 2018. It also features an 18-hole golf course, banquet facilities, Pat Quinn’s Restaurant & Bar and other amenities.

Tsawwassen Springs wants to go smaller. Delta council gave preliminary approval Monday to an application by the Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club Ltd. to shrink the size of condos that would be built in the final two phases of development. The smallest units would be just 538 square feet. “The applicant has indicated that they wish to reduce the minimum unit size as they have found that there is a demand for smaller units,” states a report to council. “During the sales of the apartments in the first two phases, their sales team learned that many potential buyers were interested in purchasing smaller and thus less expensive units than the smallest one bedroom and den units offered at the time.” The first two phases,

which included 136 condos, have been completed while a third phase, a sixstorey concrete structure that is to have 90 units, is now under construction. The fourth and final phase is for a four-storey building with 63 units. If approved, the rezoning application, which must still go to a public hearing, would see the total number of condos over the four phases at 289 units, down from the 296 that would had been originally permitted under the current zoning for the site, according to Delta planning staff. It’s not the first time the size of condos at Tsawwassen Springs have been modified. In 2010, council agreed to allow the addition of more than 50 units to the development after developer Ron Toigo came back with an application to create smaller units. At the time, he said a big reason for the change was due to the HST, a tax

adner lost one of the good guys last week with the passing of Bill Jones. His name might not be instantly recognizable to many today, but if you were a merchant in Ladner back in the 1980s, you knew the name well. Bill made sure of that. I got to know him back then from the weekly Ladner Business Association meetings at the old Hong Kong Inn. His title with the group had something to do with membership, although town booster and chief recruiter would have probably been a more accurate description of the role the semi-retired 60-something played with the organization. Bill loved his community and saw the potential in it if business owners came together to take action. He was passionate about the cause and couldn’t fathom why others in town didn’t share that enthusiasm, to the point where he wasn’t shy about sharing such an opinion. I remember Bill’s verbal report as the best part of every meeting. He would regale those assembled in the dimly lit private room at the back of the restaurant with stories of how he had used his charm to convince a particular merchant to join the LBA or how he was having to get tough, but making headway, with another. He employed an “old school” approach, so much so that at one meeting I can recall members presenting him with a baseball bat to augment his recruitment efforts. If you didn’t know him well Bill could come across as gruff, but it didn’t take long for that bluster to give way to a laugh so genuine you knew it was coming from a good place. I still wonder how many merchants joined the LBA during the 1980s simply because they wanted Bill to stop darkening their doorstep. He knew what was best for them, and the community, even if they didn’t. I didn’t see Bill as much in recent years, but whenever I’d run into him around town it was like seeing an old friend. I’m sad that friend is now gone, but I’m thankful for having known him, on a personal and professional level. In order for communities to thrive they need people like Bill, individuals who are willing to get involved, to put in an effort on behalf of something much bigger than themself. Ladner was lucky to have had Bill Jones.

Complainers need to reflect on how lucky they really are

I

t’s too bad that whomever came up with the name of this newspaper couldn’t see more people talk about good things that happen in, or are available in, our community. From politics to infrastructure issues and from developments to the environment, there has been a plethora of divisive negativity in our community for a very long time and I think people are becoming blind to it. Recently, friends of mine have offered up potential new names for the paper based on the overwhelming content of late. They have suggested the likes of the Huntington Post or the Massey Gazette. Before Mayor Lois Jackson retires, and the inevitable shake up that will ensue around our council table, I think our municipal governors should pass a bylaw suggesting that citizens of Delta have to take an hour long walk on the dike, at Watershed Park, at Deas Island Regional Park or Boundary Bay Regional Park once a month. They would have to relax, regard and reflect on just how lucky they are to live here. Maybe then they could describe their new found awareness in a letter to the editor to support the name of our paper. We are incredibly lucky to live here despite the perceived assault on our quality of life. I chuckle to

Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER

myself when I read letters from people who lament the idea of six-storey monstrosities being built in our midst. Seriously? Remember the palm tree intrusion? That was a beauty. I know that good news isn’t necessarily great for the newspaper business, but it would be nice to read something optimistic every once in a while. I realize that our geography presents a multitude of challenges when it comes to major infrastructure buildout, but I am also not naive enough to believe that we could be completely insulated from growth. I can’t think of anywhere in the Western world where growth and change are exempt from our life cycles. Preventing change seems to have been a guiding principle around here for way too long. I can hardly wait for the bridge to replace the George Massey

Tunnel and I hope that I can downsize in my own community and move to the Southlands or Tsawwassen Springs one day. The South Fraser Perimeter Road saves me time and money and I am happy that government is keeping our economy strong by working to ensure we have adequate infrastructure to facilitate trade in the Pacific Rim and elsewhere. Despite local efforts to stop a third berth at Deltaport, the construction of the SFPR, power lines, and other contentious South Delta issues, government has acted. I trust government and cabinet to make these difficult decisions for us. Parliamentary democracy has served us well for a long time. Obviously, not everyone will agree with decisions governments make, but in general, I don’t see that the decisions are being made hastily, and I have faith that the inner circle of cabinet make pragmatic choices they feel are best for all British Columbians. Where we live, it is important to have representation in government to mitigate any potential damage to our farmland or sensitive environmental areas. I am Optimistic for the future. Delta puts squeeze on commercial dog walkers

Editor: The Corporation of Delta recently posted a proposal for a commercial dog walking policy on its website. The process began nearly two years ago and most dog owners, and likely some dog walkers, are unaware. The North 40 Park Reserve was made available in 2010 as an offleash dog park. Delta was requested in March 2015 to consider allowing commercial dog walkers to freely exercise up to six dogs at a time. In the weeks of May 16 and

May 23, 2016, an onsite survey was conducted. Three hundred and fifty park users completed the survey and 179 individuals completed it online for a total of 529 responses. Unfortunately, the survey was not publicized, did not include the evening hours or the weekend, and its results give no information about how many commercial dog walkers are using the area or how many individuals utilize off-leash dog walkers. Delta’s proposal is based on those 529 responses and the research the

department conducted. Unfortunately, commercial dog walkers and their clients did not have an opportunity to provide input. Delta created a set of very strict and difficult rules that severely impact service providers. Besides following a set of ground rules that are normal and standard in the industry, such as having adequate liability insurance or not allowing problem dogs in off-leash areas, Delta’s commercial walkers at the North 40 will:

• Only be allowed four dogs off-leash in the designated area. • All dogs must be leashed the entire distance of 800-plus metres from the parking lot to the designated area and back. • Delta’s dog walkers are only allowed to operate at that location weekdays between 9 and 11 a.m. and 2 and 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. However, the most important time for clients and the busiest time for walkers is between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. • Delta’s commer-

As a current, past or future client of a commercial dog walker, as a dog owner, or as a park user, please speak up. Dog walkers have the same goals as we all do: to find ways to share public spaces without conflicts. Get informed at delta. ca. cial dog walkers will be required to pay an annual permit fee of $500 plus tax, and a carry $5 million liability insurance. Comparative to areas researched by the department (Richmond, West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Metro Vancouver and Surrey), Delta will have among the least amount of off-leash dogs per walker, least hourly availability, least amount of designated space, highest permit fees, highest fines and among the highest liability insurance requirements.

Coffee shop not needed in East Ladner Personal information

Editor: Re: East Ladner resident would like coffee shop in neighbourhood, letter to the editor, Feb. 24 As a resident of Ladner for almost 30 years and East Ladner for over 27 of them, I would like to congratulate Mayor Lois Jackson and councillors Sylvia Bishop, Jeannie Kanakos and Heather King for their no votes on the Tim Hortons proposal. In the face of ever-growing pressures of greed and development, it takes great strength to look at the peo-

ple who may be affected and just say, “Enough.” Since the building of the South Fraser Perimeter Road, myself and neighbours who live on or close to Ladner Trunk Road have been facing ever-increasing traffic volume, both cars and heavy trucks, and rampant speeding. We have been quietly working with the Delta police to resolve some of these problems and the last thing we need is an added reason for non-residents to use us a short cut on their com-

mute home. One of the reasons we moved to East Ladner is that we like our neighbours to be only farms, cows and trains. The farmers have always been incredibly respectful of neighbourhoods and seasonal disruptions are brief. I used to wake my girls in the middle of the night to watch the huge harvesters going down the road, and we love the lack of commercialism on this side of Ladner. If you wish to walk to stores, you need to buy in west Ladner.

Let us not forget in the 1970s Richmond was the size that Ladner was about 10 to 15 years ago, and without strong leadership I fear we may end up in the same way. By the way, if the Camerons would like to walk to get a coffee they are welcome to come by my house and I will make them one any time. And if they want a job within walking distance, the Co-op and cold beer and wine store are always hiring. L. Mathews

Former mayor doesn’t like Delta becoming a city Editor: It’s unclear what drives Delta council to change its historical legal description from the Corporation of Delta to the City of Delta. Rumor has it Rotterdam had difficulty comprehending the Corporation of Delta as a local government. Are we prepared to alter our heritage because of an idle comment from Rotterdam? Delta has always used

the Corporation of Delta interchangeably with the Municipality of Delta. We now have a municipal hall, municipal employees, municipal parks and buildings. So why change, and why the haste without public consultation? Delta is a legal entity with a land mass of some 40,000 acres, with settlements separated by 25,000 acres of farmland and a 6,000-acre bog. The cen-

erLawntec Ladn

tre of our proposed “city” would be farmland and bog, certainly the oddest city on any map. I don’t want to live in a city. If I did, I would move to one. I don’t think our farmers and fishermen wish to be defined by the label city. I have lived all my life in this rural community and I cannot fathom change for no good reason. All I can reckon are lost dollars without a

penny of benefits. Please sign the electoral response form available online or request a copy and drop it off at any of the five locations before March 31. According to the legislation, 6,993 residents are needed to oppose council’s initiative. Without proper consultation, I find this process disappointing. Doug Husband

was not shared by Huntington’s office

Editor: Re: MLA playing politics with information on Liberal website, letter to the editor, Feb. 22 I find it necessary to respond to Corinne Allen’s letter as she has made erroneous assumptions based on false information. The office of Vicki Huntington did not “bring confidential personal information to the media.” I understand why Allen might think this as we have recently received a copy of the apology letter that “Today’s BC Liberals” sent out to affected supporters. It states: “We learned that your personal information was provided to a member of the media by independent MLA Vicki Huntington.” This is not true. Our office, at no time, gave out any personal information to any-

one. We sent a link to a respected journalist. This link was publicly available to anyone in the world — there was no security, no encryption, no password required. Finally, I want to comment on checking up on the government donor list. I would suggest that all political offices routinely check donor lists in an effort to be vigilant for possible conflicts of interest in pending legislation or policy. This is publicly available information for all political parties (including independents) and I would recommend any interested reader to look through the political donations database to see who gives how much. You will find it very illuminating. B. Kudzin Constituency Assistant Vicki Huntington, MLA, Delta South

CARRIER OF THE MONTH CONGRATULATIONS MAYA DESROCHERS

I have been an Optimist carrier for two years. Being a carrier has allowed me to get to know my neighbours better, which in turn has helped me become less shy around others. The money I’ve earned delivering papers has been put towards my love of guitar and my future education. Becoming a carrier has been a great first job and I’d encourage anyone interested to give it a try.

able,” said Tilbury, “and we are delighted to be able to support them as they move towards their new facility and a greater impact on the lives of so many children.” D’Aquila said Dayhu’s commitment to vulnerable children is both admirable and heart-warming. A child development

centre under construction adjacent to the Ladner Pioneer Library will allow Reach to double the number of children with special needs it supports. The Reach Foundation, with support from the Corporation of Delta, has raised $5.2 million of the $5.7 million needed to complete the project.

The $400-million expansion at the FortisBC Tilbury plant is in the stretch drive. “The hydro test is completed on the tank and we’re about 85 per cent complete on the project, overall, on construction. Over the next number of months we’ll be doing more commissioning of testing of various units before we start testing the full plant,” said Doug Stout, vice-president of development. In operation since 1971, the current facility can liquefy 5,000 gigajoules (GJ) of gas per day and has a storage capacity of 600,000 GJ. The expanded facility will be able to liquefy an additional 34,000 GJ of natural gas per day and will add 1.1 million GJ of additional storage capacity. “At every stage of this process we begin to weed people out and the pool of candidates does get smaller as we go,” said Campbell. “We have to ensure that every candidate understands the culture and the work that they have signed up for and that they align with the professional values of our organization.” Simone said no stone is left unturned. “At the end of the day we don’t want any surprises,” he said. “We check in with neighbours, former teachers, coaches. We ask for 30 references and then we also go off that list to talk with people that they didn’t supply. We want to get a fair look at what this person is all about.” Once an applicant meets with the senior management team, it will be up to that group to decide whether the candidate will be hired and move forward to the Justice Institute. “When we make the decision to take them to a senior management interview, we are very committed to hiring these people,” Campbell said. “I would say 99 per cent of the people are hired out of that senior management meeting.”

Justice Institute training

Once an applicant is fully vetted and approved by the senior management team, the recruiting team takes the candidate through a pre-hiring process, which usually takes place a week before their first class. This pre-hire will go through policies, on-board training, issuing of equipment and uniforms, and some study work so each person is on solid ground before they start at the Justice Institute. Unlike the RCMP where following graduation officers can be stationed across the country, when a person is seeking to be a municipal police officer in B.C., they actually apply directly to the department of their choice. “From the day they walk into the police academy, they know what agency they will be working for,” said Campbell. Three classes are held at the Justice Institute every year (January, May and September) and the DPD aims to put at least two people into each class.

Each class usually has up to 36 students, but some recent ones have had as many as 48 thanks to a huge hiring push by the Vancouver Police Department. Block one is 12 weeks and consists of bookwork as well as driving and firearms training. Block two is 19 to 21 weeks with the candidate integrated with a field-training officer from the department. In Delta, there are four patrol squads (A-platoon through Dplatoon) with each squad having two to three designated fieldtraining officers. Finally, block three sees the candidates return to the Justice Institute for nine more weeks of studying law and applicable applications. If there is an exempt officer, as is the case with the two hired from Alberta, they will not go to the Justice Institute for full training. The officers need to get their provincial certification and might go through a bit of training to get acclimated to the community and the department, but can essentially hit the ground running.

What makes a good candidate?

One of the top intangibles is a person who has a strong sense of community. “Certainly we look for people who were born or brought up in Delta, but also others who have been brought up in communities that have a small-town feel to them,” said Mah. “Those who were active in sports and have the team-player mentality, a good lifestyle, integrity, honesty, strong family and friends, a good job history — these are all the attributes we are looking for. This is a lifetime commitment.” Policing can be a high stress career choice, so a certain “grit” factor is also high on the list. “We want people who are resilient, those that can be knocked down, but can get back up. This is a tough job, but it is very rewarding,” said Campbell.”

Swearing-in ceremony

At the recent ceremony, the officers sworn in included Const. Sunny Gahunia, who was with the Calgary Police Department, and Const. Dan Tatla from the Edmonton Police Department. Both are originally from B.C. and decided to move back to the Lower

Mainland for family reasons and quality of life. “I came from a large police service, and I wanted to go to a smaller police service and Delta was highly spoken of from my research,” said Gahunia. “I started here in September and I don’t regret my decision at all. This is a great community. The people of Delta have been phenomenal.” Constables Scott McClure, Michael Santos and Jessica Slater are part of Class 152, which started training at the Justice Institute Sept. 19 and will graduate June 23. Constables Navjot Bring and Andrea Tuttle are part of Class 153, which started training Jan. 16 and will graduate Nov. 3. Bring was born in Richmond, but grew up in Surrey and North Delta. He said he has always had an interest in policing, even as a young boy playing cops and robbers with his friends. “When I got into university and the criminology program I took a youth justice course where we dealt with kids and how they are affected by crime and I just saw that you can really make a difference and that really tipped the scales for me,” he said. “Delta is a tightknit organization and it seemed like a natural fit. It is one of the only departments that wear its last names on their uniforms, so that goes to show the connection with our community. We are just not a number to the community, we are actual members of the community and we are here to help, serve and protect.” Born and raised in Langley, Slater started working for Delta a few years ago as a public safety representative and dispatcher. “I wanted to take a more hands-on approach. There is only so much you can do from the radio room,” she said. “I applied with Delta and was deferred to the reserve program, which was a huge blessing, as it afforded me a lot of early training. It’s such an interesting workplace and I love the idea of no two days being the same. People generally don’t call the police if they are having a good day. They call in times of crisis, so I like the idea of being in a position to help people.” Following the presentation of badges and the swearing-in of the officers, Chief Neil Dubord offered a few thoughts. As the ceremony was the day after Valentine’s Day, Dubord borrowed a line from Forrest Gump. “Policing is like a box of chocolates — you just never know what you are going to get,” he said. “Everyday when a police officer goes out on patrol they have to be prepared for anything. At times this career will bring you a deep sense of joy, a sense of grief, at times anger, and times great laughter, so the lesson is to always be prepared, mentally, physically and emotionally. “Attitude is everything. Never lose the drive, enthusiasm and passion that got you here today to get your badge. This is a noble profession. Police work is a gift, much like a box of chocolates, so be sure to treat it as such.”

“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” John 13:34 This is by virtue the final words of Jesus to the disciples, they had to be very important. Most of us do not think that this is something we can do. The question is, would Jesus give His disciples a command He knew they couldn’t keep? The answer is no, so why is it so hard for us today to love other people? Could it be this simple? We can’t give what we don’t have? Consciously or not, we tend to treat people the way we believe God is treating us. God does not love us because we are lovely or read the Bible or go to church. He loves us without conditions. Therefore, we hold others to the same standard — our love for them is in direct proportion to their works, or how they treat us. God’s love has never been or ever will be conditional. He loved you at your worst. God decided to love you even though you didn’t deserve it. When you understand how much God loves you, it becomes easy to love others. And when you love others as He has loved you, your behaviour will change toward them.

rendan Uegama says working on the first season of the Netflix series Van Helsing was a “fantastic experience.” The series debuted on Canadian Netflix late last year. It follows a character recently awoken from a coma, Vanessa, and a band of survivors fighting

to stay alive against vampires. Uegama, who grew up in Tsawwassen and went to South Delta Secondary, explains that a director of photography is in control of the way a show is photographed. That involves directing the cinematography and using tools like cameras and lights to convey the story. “I work with a team of people to accomplish this,” he says. “It is a lot of work,

but a lot of fun and very rewarding.” For Van Helsing and his last TV series, The Romeo Section (an espionage drama on CBC), Uegama shot all the episodes. No film or TV show shoots without a director of photography, he explains, noting that he was on set every day from start until finish. Van Helsing was filmed in an around Downtown Vancouver and one of the

main locations was the old Canada Post building on Georgia Street. Uegama says he’s excited to be working on the second season of the show, which started production at the beginning of February. The Capilano College grad says working on Van Helsing, as well as The Romeo Section, have been highlights of his career so far. “The shows were very different from one another,

but each gave me freedom to express myself in completely different ways with my cinematography. And that I love. Each project has its own language and on series work it is always evolving.” Uegama can be followed on Instagram at @ brendanuegama, where he often posts behind the scenes pictures. He’s now living in Los Angeles with his wife and producing partner, Nicole G. Leier.

Cruising the Sunshine Coast has a large section covering the Fraser River estuary tidal waterways, the veteran boater notes. “It’s colourful, scenic and in most weather conditions, quite safe,” says Vassilopoulos, noting boaters need to be aware of the spring freshet and accompanying debris. “I feel the Fraser River

is a very colourful area. To me it has a certain amount of appeal that’s a bit lost because there’s not enough facilities for boats to tie up,” he says. The back cover of the book notes the Sunshine Coast is among the most popular cruising destinations in the Pacific Northwest. The guide takes readers from Point Roberts and the Fraser River to Howe Sound and Indian Arm and follows the coast to Powell River, Lund and the entrance to Desolation Sound. The guide is avail-

able at Albany Books in Tsawwassen, Black Bond Books in Ladner, most marine stores that sell books and other book stores. Vassilopoulos has also recently released updated versions of Docks and Destinations, Cruising the Gulf Islands and Cruising Desolation Sound.

There’s more to Palm Springs than golf California’s desert communities also have a rich variety of cultural activities to offer visitors RAY CHATELIN

Optimist contributor

Travelers heading south generally do so for one reason — to escape the rain, snow and cold that grips our part of the world between November and March. And there’s no doubt that the Palm Springs area is a wonderful place to relax, especially if golf is one of your pursuits. After all, it’s one of America’s premier golf destinations with some 110 courses contained within the 72-kilometre stretch of the Coachella Valley that houses the Greater Palm Springs region. With a permanent population of about 350,000, that means there’s a golf course for every 3,182 people, making it one of the most favourable courseto-population ratios in the world. Scotland, for example, has 543 courses for five million people or one for every 9,208. Even with tourists flood-

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival attracts thousands to the California desert every spring. ing the place in winter — thereby doubling the population — there’s still plenty of chances to grab a tee time. And if you book for after 1 p.m., there’s usually a deep discount. If golf isn’t your thing, there’s tennis, hiking, cycling, shopping at discount malls, jeep tours deep into the desert, a tram ride up San Jacinto Mountain, hanging out by the pool enjoying what Mother Nature has provided, and arts and entertainment. Most think of Palm

Spring as a single entity, but it is actually a succession of communities that stretch along the valley with Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indio, La Quinta, Coachella, Indian Wells and Thermal tied together like mountain climbers tethered to a single rope. For newbies, it can seem an imposing sprawl of walled desert retreats, but each community has its own character and feel. Palm Springs is the original community and is the

heart of the region, having a downtown area where you’ll find exclusive shopping along El Paseo Drive on the Palm Springs/Palm Desert border plus a series of intimate restaurants and art galleries that make El Paseo a major art marketplace. Along Palm Canyon Drive in the heart of the community you get a feel of what old Palm Springs was like back in its heyday of the 1950s and ’60s. Two of the major draws in March are the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament at Indian Wells

and the ANA Inspiration women’s golf tournament at Rancho Mirage — both attracting the best players in their sport from around the world. But there is also an incredibly rich variety of cultural activities that take place in Greater Palm Springs. In fact, each of the communities has its own arts festival and throughout the year there are more major classical and popular performances here than you’ll find in most large cities. Only Las Vegas comes close to

equalling the number of big-name performances found in the Palm Springs area. The Palm Canyon Theater has a series of Broadway shows, while the Annenberg Theater at the Palm Springs Art Museum features Broadway and jazz singers. Being close to Los Angeles has its advantages. Palm Springs becomes a smaller version of Sundance with the annual Palm Springs International Film Festival in January and if you’re around in the heat of August, the Palm Springs International Short Film Festival is held at the historic Plaza Theatre. Palm Springs, after all, is not just about chipping and putting. With the help of Mark Trotman, Jordan Naylor makes one of his 19 saves in the Delta Ice Hawks 4-1 victory over Grandview on Wednesday night to open up the Pacific Junior Hockey League semi-final series. Game three is Tuesday in Ladner at 7:35 p.m.

Ice Hawks rolling into Burnaby Delta looking to build off impressive game one in PJHL Tom Shaw Conference final MARK BOOTH

Something has to give Sunday afternoon at the Burnaby Winter Club (BWC) as the Delta Ice Hawks look to build on an impressive game one performance in their semi-final series with the Grandview Steelers. The Ice Hawks made it 10 wins in their last 11 games with a 3-1 victory on Wednesday night in Ladner to open up the best-of-seven Pacific Junior Hockey League Tom Shaw Conference final. The teams hit the BWC ice at 4 p.m. in what will be the start of a threegame-in-four-day stretch. Game three is Tuesday back in Delta at 7:35 p.m. The Steelers outlasted the Richmond Sockeyes to capture their opening series in seven games thanks mostly to their dominance at home — winning all four encounters. The Hawks have proven to be no slouch on the road during their productive stretch with five straight wins. Their two best performances in the opening round came in North Vancouver

— 6-2 and 5-1 triumphs. They also came through with a clutch 4-3 win in Burnaby back on Feb. 5 that allowed them to leap past the Steelers in the Tom Shaw Conference standings for good. “Our team plays pretty good in that rink, especially with our size,” said Ice Hawks head coach Darren Naylor. “And if it’s more about speed then we are fine with that too. I don’t think this is going to be a four game series and you have to win the battles to win the war.” If the Ice Hawks were trying to send a message Wednesday, it was making full use of their size advantage — led up front by bruising power forwards Brad Crompton and Mark Trotman. Crompton threw a number of huge bodychecks, to the point where he was handed a major penalty for boarding. That resulted in a late Grandview power play goal and most likely a game two suspension as well. Delta has plenty of other 6-foot plus candidates to throw around their weight and lots of speed to compliment it too, led by Jordan

Deyrmenjian and the ever-improving Harris Pearce who factored in on a pair of goals. “We have to stick with being physical, especially against their d-men,” continued Naylor. “I think we pounded them pretty good tonight and that was our message. I told them we have to treat every night like it’s a game seven and just keep pounding and pounding them. “They are a team that works hard, has a good goalie and waits for you to make a mistake. We didn’t make a lot tonight and thought we played pretty good 60 minutes of hockey.” The Steelers generated just three shots in the opening period but did manage to hit the iron twice. However, it was Jonathan Stein who opened the scoring in the late going when he buried a feed from Pierce. Captain Cam Cuthbert pinched in from the blueline to double the lead early in the second and the Hawks would dominate much of the remainder of the contest. Gary Dhaliwal made it 3-0 on a third period power play goal and Deyrmenjian added an empty netter. Jordan Naylor made 19 saves.

Rugby standout playing in Vegas Tsawwassen rugby standout Jarvis Dashkewytch is wearing B.C. colours this week at the Las Vegas Invitational (LVI). The Grade 11 South Delta Secondary School student has aged up to be a member of Rugby B.C.’s Elite U18 Boys Sevens team. The LVI is considered the premier amateur rugby event in the United States, featuring athletes and match-ups across a wide-range of rugby divisions and age groups. After earning four Cup victories at this event last year, the B.C. teams are hoping to repeat their success this week. This tournament is an amazing opportunity to showcase the rugby Jarvis talent in B.C. and to Dashkewytch provide players with high-level competition. The U18s will be looking to progress from last year’s semi-final berth in the Aces Division. Dashkewytch played for B.C.’s U16 team in Vegas a year ago. The standout athlete also helped B.C. win gold at the 2016 U16 nationals. It was part of a busy summer that saw him backstop the Delta Islanders rep lacrosse team to a historic gold medal at the Midget A1 provincial championships.

South Delta Kyokushin Karate Club had a number of outstanding performances at the recent Lower Mainland Coloured Belt Championships. Among those representing the club were Jeramie Hein, Royce Repaldo, Aiden Robson, Sebastian Saddul, Hailey Hanna, Joshua Talban, Ellyana Nugent, Madelyn Nugent, Gavin Espinoza and James Donham.

DOMICH (nee Soroskie), Frances Jean December 2, 1939 - February 25, 2017

Frances passed peacefully with her family by her side at Delta Hospice in Ladner. Predeceased by her husband George and her parents, John and Doris Soroskie. Left to cherish her memories as a caring, giving and understanding mom, are her two sons; Trent (Audra) and Tracy (Racquel), three granddaughters, Chelsea (Jason), Katrina (Shawn) and Saundra (Kyle); also three great-grandchildren, Korbyn, Olivia and Logan. The second oldest of four siblings, she leaves Shirley (Bob) Thacker, Kelowna, John (Diane) Soroskie, Kelowna, and June Soroskie, Vancouver. Will also be missed by many nieces, nephews and cousins, and many friends, especially Aunt Helen. Frances was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba and lived in Middlechurch with her parents and siblings until her marriage to George…..after living a few years in Manitoba they decided a change was needed and moved to BC, settled in Kelowna for a few years…with one more move to come that was to Ladner, where they remained till their passing. Frances always had a dream of travelling one day….she made that happen….with a couple trips to Europe and a number of cruises. She shared many a memory of these trips. She loved to write and read, could be seen doing both a lot. She was a whiz at scrabble, always up for a challenge. She always had a smile and hello for everyone, even strangers. This precious soul will be missed by many. A very special thank you to Dr. David Kason for all his support and care during the most difficult of times….and caring staff at Delta Hospice. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 11:00 am at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Frances’ name to a charity of your choice. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946.6040

SUDOKU

HUNT, Dorothy Janet

February 8th, 1942 to February 25th, 2017 Despite professional, compassionate care by surgeons, doctors and staff of the BC Cancer Agency throughout the last 40 months, Dorothy died peacefully at home on February 25th, 2017 comforted by immediate family members. She had immensely enjoyed her 75th birthday celebrations earlier this month when most of her grandkids, kids and extended family had crowded around her bed to reminisce, cry a little and laugh a lot about our lives together and allowing her to express her hopes and aspirations to each for their future. Dorothy was born in Winnipeg on February 8th, 1942, only child of Isabel (Paterson) and Bertie Hunt, and is survived and will be lovingly remembered by her husband Dale, of nearly 54 years; children Jeff (Lynn), Cindy (Ken) and Pam (Dan) and their children Emily, Hannah, Holly, Tabitha, Cooper and Mia. By far her primary passion has been admiring the grandchildren’s development and growth, who, to a child, have reciprocated by eagerly involving ‘Gma’ in all aspects of their busy lives. It has been Dorothy’s long-time wish to be cremated and celebrated with a private Service in Montreal at a later date.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.

Finally, and without presumption, aware that some of our friends and acquaintances will be inclined to recognize her passing with flowers, the family respectfully requests that in lieu of that custom, a donation be made in her honour to Ovarian Cancer Research at the BC Cancer Foundation to help stop this dreadful disease.
