Optimist celebrating 95 years First edition of this community newspaper rolled off press in March of 1922
Ninety-five years ago this month the first edition of The Weekly Optimist rolled off the press. Vincent Dunning came west from Alberta, where he was operating two newspapers, to accept an invitation from the Delta Board of Trade (the predecessor of the Delta Chamber of Commerce) to fill a vacancy left after the demise of the Delta Times in 1914. Dunning set up shop in the

Delta police officers investigate a two-vehicle collision on Deltaport Way Wednesday morning that claimed the life of a 40-year-old Surrey man.
A 40-year-old father of two from Surrey is being remembered by friends and co-workers following his tragic death in a two-vehicle accident on Deltaport Way early Wednesday morning. Delta police have not released the man’s name, but a GoFundMe page set up by friend and co-worker Johnny Levy has identified the man as Steve Mahli, a member of the International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union Local 502. “Our brother and fellow 502 coworker tragically lost his life on the way home last night,” wrote Levy on the page. “The loss to his two young children and his family is tremendously heartbreaking.
“We can all relate to the fears of a young family when losing someone vital to their well-being. Steve was a great dad, a good guy and an honest friend to so many of us. Let’s give together to help take care of those loved ones he has had to leave behind.” As of yesterday morning, more than $36,000 had been raised on the page. Around 2:40 a.m., DPD responded to a collision between a car and a semi-truck. According to police, initial indications are that the car, driven by Mahli, crossed into the westbound lane and hit the truck head-on. Paramedics rushed the man to hospital, but he died of his injuries enroute. The driver of the semi-truck, although not physically injured, was transported to hospital and treated for shock.

Redevelopment of the Ladner waterfront is in jeopardy after the province announced it will only provide 10-year water lot leases. Civic officials say developers need longer-term tenure in order to invest in the area.
Waterfront plans foiled Municipal officials upset that province will only provide short-term leases SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta’s grand plan to revitalize the Ladner waterfront has hit a major roadblock. That’s essentially how Delta council summed up the situation following word the province won’t be providing long-term leases. “As much as we wanted to make Chisholm Street this great sort of Stevestonlike beautiful place with boardwalks and fish and chips and restaurants and coffee shops, how can we do this with 10-year leases?” asked Coun. Ian Paton. “Companies will not come in and take the risk of setting up business or borrowing money from the banks, and they probably won’t lend you money for a 10-year-lease,” added Paton, who is the Liberal candidate in Delta South in the upcoming provincial election. Three of the major properties on Chisholm Street are owned by Delta, which had hoped to use them as a catalyst for redevelopment of the waterfront, but needed long-term water lot leases to do so. What’s worse, Victoria

The Delta-owned Seven Seas site on Chisholm Street was supposed to act as a catalyst for waterfront redevelopment. told Delta it can only use those properties for community amenities and heritage preservation purposes. Port Metro Vancouver had been managing provincially-owned water lots, but pulled out when its agreement with Victoria expired at the end of 2014. The province has since taken over but hadn’t offered current or prospective leaseholders, including float home owners and businesses, long-term tenure, which meant the waterfront wasn’t a par-
ticularly attractive place to invest. Delta used $2.3 million in amenity money it received from the port about a decade earlier to purchase the Seven Seas site, with a goal to eventually encourage revitalization of the area. Delta has also approved a waterfront mixed-use zone that would permit a wide range of uses. The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Resources came up with a management agreement after consultations with the
Musqueam Indian Band, an agreement that doesn’t allow for long-term leases. What’s more, Delta officials are also fuming they had just a week to comment on the agreement. Council agreed to ask the province to reconsider and this week the municipality issued a press release stating Delta refuses to accept the shortterm lease plan. Mayor Lois Jackson described the provincial decision as disappointing, lamenting all the work and dollars Delta has put into
cleaning up the harbour. CAO George Harvie said it’s “an insult” because the province also downzoned what the municipality can do with its properties, meaning little can be done unless the province changes its position. He noted Delta’s earlier offer to provide a 50-year prepaid lease was rejected. “We’re one frustrated property owner. All along the river they’ve been getting the same message,” Harvie said. Mike Owen of Mike’s Marine Services, who said it’s been frustrating waiting for the water lot lease issue to be resolved, said he still needs more answers on the agreement. Saying 10-year leases would be viewed on the low side for the floating home community, and more so when it comes to the municipality trying to redevelop Ladner Harbour, Kelly McCloskey, president of the Floating Home Association of B.C., earlier this year met with Minister of Forests, Lands and Resources Steve Thomson. McCloskey noted they were told new leases would be made available by the end of this year, which will at least alleviate some uncertainty.

Barber hanging up clippers after 50 years Ken Scott, who bought the Tsawwassen Barber Shop in 1966, will give final haircut tomorrow IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
After 50 years in the business, thousands of haircuts and even more stories, Tsawwassen Barber Shop’s Ken Scott will hang up his clippers for the final time tomorrow. One month shy of his 75th birthday, Scott is retiring and turning the shop over to Chad Ballard, who has worked there since 2001. “I’m ready to go. Fifty years — it’s time,” Scott told the Optimist while giving long-standing customer Lloyd Jones a final trim this week. Jones said he has been coming to the 56th Street shop since 1967. “Ken is a good Saskatchewan boy just like me. He cut my hair just the way I like it, so why would I go anywhere else?” Jones asked. “A lot of scoops and gossip went through here. If you wanted to know something, you came to the barber shop. “There have been a lot of laughs, lots of memo-
ries. A lot of history has been told here.” Returning home from the navy in 1963, a family friend, who was a successful barber, suggested Scott take up the trade. “I came here to work for the guy in May of 1966 and was here until August and then he said I’m out of here. I had no place to go, so I bought it and here I am still,” said Scott. In those early days, Scott commuted from his home in Surrey before settling in Tsawwassen with his family in 1974. His daughter Tawnia recalls returning home from summer vacations where her dad would unload the car, go straight to the shop to check on things and get a couple of haircuts in before dinner. Scott made many friends and acquaintances during his career. Many young boys have grown up to have families of their own and have brought their sons into the shop to get their first cut. “I like Tsawwassen. It’s a good community. The people, well, there are

community. The shop was his lifeline and the people he worked with were his backbone. Helene Morin has worked for Scott for 37 years. “It has been a privilege to work with Ken. He is the best boss,” Morin said. “The community has been great. We get to know
them and they get to know us.” Dallas Christiansen retired two years ago after 28 years at the shop. She lives in the neighbourhood and worked part-time at the barber shop. “It was a great part-time job to have. I met so many great people and Ken is super. He is the reason we
all hung around. It was just a special place to work,” Christiansen recalled. Tiana Espenhain is the young one in the bunch, having worked at the shop for the past four years. “Ken helped me get my career started and I worked here when I was going to school,” she said. “I can’t thank him enough for that. He has been a pleasure to work for.” Ballard got his first haircut at the shop when he was just two years old. “Ken’s a very nice person. I know I have big shoes to fill,” Ballard said. Scott said Wednesday he plans to enjoy his last few days with his staff before retirement. “Chad and Tiana, they’re young and Helene is going to stay for a few more years. She is a solid rock here,” Scott said. “Chad, he’s a sharp boy and catches on fast. He is very, very meticulous in what he does, so he’ll do fine. “Really, I just want to say to everyone thank you. It’s been wonderful and my pleasure.”

Bridge footings will hold firm: ministry
Retired engineer raises concerns about $3.5-billion project due to depth needed to reach bedrock SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The footings for the bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel will hold firm, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has assured following questions about the structural integrity of the $3.5-billion project. After a request for information from the Optimist, the ministry released a “Fact Sheet” this week on the geotechnical issues related to the 10-lane structure that will span the Fraser River delta and its soft soils on either side. “Bridging major rivers through soft deltaic soils is a challenge that bridge engineers have developed and honed over the centuries of bridge foundation design,” the ministry document states. In a letter sent recently to B.C. NDP Leader John Horgan, retired engineer Tom Morrison reiterated concerns raised by other bridge opponents when it comes to structural issues, particularly foundation challenges they say could
Construction of the 10-lane bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel is scheduled to begin this year. skyrocket the price or prevent the bridge from being built altogether. It was similar to a letter the Tsawwassen resident submitted to the Optimist in which he cited the fact that boreholes drilled by a ministry contractor on the north and south shores of the Fraser River in 2013 went to a depth of 335 metres (1,100 feet) without
reaching bedrock. Morrison also noted a 1995 Geological Survey of Canada paper estimated the depth to bedrock at the bridge site at 600 to 700 metres (1,970 to 2,300 feet), something not disputed by the ministry. He questions why the bridge is going to be built on 2,000 feet of waterlogged sand and mud in
Proposed Land Use Plan Amendments Public Consultation Period April 3 - June 2, 2017 The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority intends to amend the Land Use Plan to designate four industrial properties that have been acquired by the port authority over the past year. These include redesignating three properties in Delta,
an area assessed at moderate to high risk of liquefaction in the event of an earthquake. Morrison said other regional bridges were built on piles penetrating 80 to 100 metres into the ground, bottoming in thick and extensive layers of hard, dense clay, sand and gravel that provided the necessary foundation
strength. Noting how a relatively new 58-storey apartment building in San Francisco began leaning likely due to the material it rests on, the retired engineer said the alternative is to keep the existing tunnel and build a second one. However, according to the ministry, full scale test piles and extensive
geotechnical subsurface studies undertaken since 2014 confirmed the heavy loads can be supported. Below the soft soils is a dense, strong layer that is several hundred metres thick, while the new bridge foundation design calls for ground improvements to prevent sand near the surface from liquefying in the event of an earthquake. “Thousands of hours of professional geotechnical and bridge structural engineering have been dedicated to ensuring that the new George Massey replacement bridge and its supports are appropriately designed for conditions at the crossing site and for a major seismic event,” the ministry explained. The Fact Sheet, which compares other deep foundation bridges in B.C. and around the world, also provides a case against the existing tunnel and building a new one. Bridge construction is expected to start this year and be completed by 2022. • To view the Fact Sheet, go to www.deltaoptimist.com.

Delta police are hoping that someone has the missing piece of information that will help them crack a seven-year-old Ladner homicide. Today marks the sevenyear anniversary of the murder of 62-year-old Regina Brazil, who was killed in her Evergreen Lane apartment. On March 31, 2010, a neighbour who had not seen Brazil for a day or so called police to check on her. When officers arrived they found Brazil deceased. There was no apparent forced entry to the apartment, so police believe Brazil knew the person or persons responsible for her death. To date, the DPD has employed various investigative strategies, completed 400 investigative taskings and conducted more than 140 interviews as part of the homicide investigation.

Regina Brazil was found murdered on March 31, 2010. “Delta police continue to keep this investigation open and actively followup on any tips and leads received in an effort to identify the person or persons responsible for the death of Regina Brazil,” a police media release stated. Brazil’s murder is featured on the department’s recently created unsolved cases website (dpdun-
solved.ca). Even though it has been seven years since the murder, police believe someone knows something and that information could help solve the case. Anyone with information about this homicide is asked to contact the Delta police at 604-946 4411, Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477 or through the unsolved cases website.

t sounds like a low bar, but I’m pretty sure the alternative approval process is still too high for opponents to clear. As you likely know, the folks at municipal hall have undertaken a process that would turn the Corporation of Delta into the City of Delta in an effort to better identify local government. They’re doing so using what’s called an alternative approval process, which means the change will happen unless a certain number of residents object. Only 10 per cent of eligible voters have to register their opposition to kill the idea, but that seemingly small number is unlikely to be reached when the deadline arrives at 4 p.m. today. I suspect there are at least 10 per cent of people around here that don’t like the proposed name change, but the real question, and the one heavily weighted in Delta’s favour, is how many of them are actually going to take time out of their day to go to one of five civic buildings and fill out a form? To put that in some perspective, less than one-third of registered voters found time to get to a polling station in the last municipal election, so right off the bat you’ve got almost 70 per cent of people unlikely to make the effort to have their voices heard. I wonder what would happen if the shoe was on the other foot, if Delta was required to have 10 per cent of voters sign a form in order for the name change to proceed. I’m doubtful almost 7,000 would come forward to support the initiative. I realize there are only so many methods in which government can gauge public opinion, and the alternative approval process is considered a relatively quick and inexpensive option, but it definitely has a negative billing connotation to it, an approach that ironically isn’t permitted to be used in other circumstances. I’m not convinced a name change, should it proceed, will have any great impact on Delta one way or the other. It might offer some clarity for outsiders and ruffle the sensibilities of some insiders, but at the end of the day, Delta will continue to be Delta. What I do wonder about is whether the outcome of this whole exercise would have been different if Delta council members had decided to wait until next fall and included a question on the municipal election ballot instead.
Need champion on council to further debate on separation
E
vidently part of the reasoning behind the proposed renaming of the Corporation of Delta was because people in Holland thought it was a business and not a municipality, so they were confused. If you’ve travelled in Europe, you’ll recall signage near every community directing you to the “City Center.” Can you imagine how confused Dutch tourists would be at the “City Center” of the City of Delta when they pull into Tim Hortons at the junction of highways 10 and 99? I still believe Delta has very little semblance to a city and therefore the name should remain the same. If you agree, your form has to be submitted by 4 p.m. today. On another topic, I believe the timing for the separation of North Delta and South Delta is the best it’s been for decades. My purpose in bringing up the topic of separation was to act as a catalyst to have some civic minded people in South Delta who might aspire to be the first mayor or council member of South Delta to get involved, research the facts and, if there is merit to the idea, do what is required to get the question on the next municipal ballot. I believe that a committee ded-

icated to this idea could do the research necessary for a proper evaluation of this serious subject for residents to consider. South Delta has grown from a farming and fishing history into a complex community because of our location on the coast at the southwest corner of Canada. I believe that because of this concentration of infrastructure we need to be represented by politicians who understand we have a responsibility to the people of British Columbia and Canada, but also understand we value our unique way of life and take our stewardship of the Fraser River, ALR farmland, Burns Bog and the Pacific Flyway very seriously. With all due respect, the folks in North Delta simply don’t understand our issues and don’t
experience what we do in South Delta, so I believe it’s time for South Delta to be responsible for its own future. Earlier this year there were a number of letters and some editorial comment on reforming the Canadian voting system. However you come at this issue, it always comes down the political parties involved and the nominees they offer up at election time. More often than not these representatives are not the most qualified or the most experienced and sometimes come with baggage, but they are willing to carry the party banner and that’s all that matters. I would like to see more qualified people running for elected office with successful backgrounds that would influence their actions if elected. The only way that I can see how voters could force political parties to field more qualified people is for federal and provincial election ballots to include a box so I could vote for “none of the above.” If the majority check that box, then the parties would have to change their nominees and re-do that local election. Dangerous two-party democracy gives winner 100% of the power
Editor: Re: Nine reasons he won’t vote NDP, letter to the editor, March 24 Curtis MacDonald made several comments on why not to vote NDP and one reason that he would not vote to elect another independent MLA. I thought it was odd the only reason he had not to support Nicholas Wong was that it would risk putting an NDP government into power. That is not true at all. If we elect an independent, neither party gains a seat and South Delta gets to be represented by someone who puts the
community ahead of a political party. There is no way an independent can help one party win over another, but it does highlight how dangerous a two-party democracy can be. No matter which party wins on May 9, the result will give them 100 per cent of the power. This is the same system that elected President Donald Trump south of the border and has allowed the B.C. Liberals to turn our province into the “Wild West” of political cash. So, thinking that South Delta continuing to vote
for an independent would risk giving the province to the NDP is ludicrous. Our current political system makes it impossible for any party MLA, Liberal or NDP, to truly represent their constituents because they are pressured into voting in line with the party platform. The goal of an MLA is to represent their constituents, but between the last provincial election and the one in May, only two votes were cast against their respective parties. That means, unless Liberal MLAs individually supported allowing foreign political contributions,
taking billions of dollars out of Crown corporations and spending $15 million to tell people how great B.C. is doing just before an election, they were not allowed to speak out and they were told how to vote. If that was your only reason not to vote independent, I suggest you rethink your position. Vicki Huntington showed us that an independent MLA can be a very effective representative. She was able to gain the respect of both parties while bringing the concerns of South Delta to Victoria. Joyce Robinson
Difference between parties is clear: Liberal focus is on money, while NDP is all about the people
Editor: Re: Nine reasons he won’t vote NDP, letter to the editor, March 24 I am concerned that people will grow tired of the rhetoric of this campaign. The discussion needs to be simple. It is most important that we get the message out so voters can understand the differences between their choices. I believe the Liberal focus is mostly about money, the New Democratic Party focus is about people.
The Liberal government came out with a slogan during teacher negotiations, “The money is the money.” This is true. The question is where to put that money. The Liberals believe that by giving the money to the wealthy and big business, job creation will be stimulated. I believe that giving more disposable income to the lower and middle income earners (who will spend it) will stimulate more job creation. But this campaign is about people and under
the Liberals, we have seen: British Columbia become the province with the highest child poverty rate, a move from second to ninth in education funding ($1,000 per child below the Canadian average), the neglect of social services and health care, failure to address the increasing needs of those in need of mental health support, a lack of a clear strategy to deal with addictions and deteriorating care for seniors. Many of the people of British Columbia are
being left behind. While this neglect is happening, we are constantly seeing increases in indirect taxes as the gap between the higher income and the middle/lower income earners continues to widen. Finally, I am saddened by the strategy of spending millions of taxpayer and private dollars on campaigning. There has to be a better way to elect our government. B. Bruce Reid NDP Candidate Delta South
More time needed to address name change issue
Editor: Along with many others, I am deeply disturbed at the lack of time and discussion regarding Delta’s name change from corporation to city. I have discussed this
issue with numerous residents only to find that virtually none are in favour while many are still not aware of Delta council’s intention. We are living in busy and stressful times where
not everyone keeps in touch with municipal affairs and time slips by quickly. (This is perhaps why we have been reminded by the Corporation of Delta in an ad that our utility bills are due by

Turf field replacement welcome, but track at SDSS still needs work
Editor: Re: Mackie Park is first field to get its turf replaced, March 22 It is great to hear the municipality has come up with a replacement plan to fix some of the aging turf fields. As someone who both plays on these fields and coaches young athletes on them, I can say the newest field at Dugald Morrison is far superior to the other aging fields in the municipality. It provides a better experience for games and practices and is much easier on the athletes’ bodies. I congratulate all who were involved in developing this plan. Now can someone at the municipality please
work with the school board and our own minister of sport to please fix the embarrassment of a track that exists at South Delta Secondary in Tsawwassen? In the year after Andre De Grasse, Derek Drouin, Brianne Thiesen-Eaton and Damian Warner revived the fortunes of Canada Athletics at the Rio Games, it is a shame that any child in this municipality who wants to try to emulate these athletes has to leave the municipality to run on a proper track. There should be a minimum of one decent track in Delta and probably a couple more in North Delta and Ladner. Greg Day
Drivers urged to slow down on River Rd. so ducks and other wildlife can cross
Editor: This is a message for the ignorant driver who intentionally mowed down two beautiful mallards in the 5200-block of River Road in Ladner on Monday afternoon. I hope you’re satisfied. In your haste to get to your ever-important destination 30 seconds quicker than if you stopped to let them pass, you killed a five-year mating pair with a nest containing seven eggs that will never hatch. You also traumatized my daughter who witnessed your action. I wonder if you would have done the same if it were someone’s pet cat or dog, or God forbid, a child
crossing the road. River Road is not Highway 99 and there is posted 50 km/h signage with caution wildlife warning signs in place. Every year I bury five or six ducks, raccoons and opossums — victims of impatient drivers with a need for speed. We live in Ladner for its great family environment and proximity to nature. Slow down and appreciate what our unique town has to offer. Thank you to those who take the time to slow down or stop to let the animals pass. Your actions will help ensure our children enjoy a future with nature. Mike Rosychuk

It added another pod in 1983, and again in 2010. This makes it a problem nearly 50 years in the making. This was done over the objections of a federal government report from

ades, but nothing has ever been done. Worse, the report also notes that a large portion (80 per cent) of the salmonid rearing grounds in the Fraser River estuary have already been alienated and that any further losses should not be allowed. It concluded that certain mitigation measures, such as eelgrass transplants and provision of new habitat, have not been proven to be effective, and cannot be accepted as compensation for existing fisheries habitat.
In 2010, provincial government scientists reported their concerns about ongoing channel erosion between the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal and the ports at Roberts Bank, claiming reports were “grossly incomplete” and their cumulative effects were being discounted. Roberts Bank port expansion together with the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal have virtually destroyed the natural eelgrass beds by physically obstructing the natural flow of water and sedi-
ments. If the Port of Vancouver is truly serious about retaining the Fraser River’s ecosystem, it should step back from its expansion proposals and stop advocating for the removal of the George Massey Tunnel and the dredging of the river deeper so it can industrialize the whole of the lower Fraser River. After half a century, the destruction of the mighty Fraser River has to stop now while there is still something left to save. Douglas George Massey

It’s gonna be a big sucker. Ten lanes wide and maybe as high as 152 metres, which is a scary 500 or so feet. It will rise from farmland as flat as Saskatchewan, which means the approach north will have to start somewhere north of Blaine, and the way south, a bit south of Broadway. We learned about this bridge many moons ago when signs began appearing in farmers’ fields
announcing that in 2017, our commuting-by-tunnel woes would be over. A bridge would ascend toward heaven, and the tunnel would be gone. They told us that we would all play a part in the planning of this puppy. Really? I’m willing to bet there are a whole lot of us south of the river who feel the bridge was always a done deal, no matter what. And the bridge would be a gigantic part of a

nefarious scheme that would make it possible for gigantic freighters to go upstream to load themselves with oil, gas, coal or whatever else might need shipping from new ports in Surrey, Langley or, on a high tide, Spuzzum? The tunnel, of course, would go. Not a chance that it would remain as a ready-made venue for growing mushrooms or dope. It would be blasted to bits, to keep our old memories well below the bellies of freighters, tankers and cruise ships en route to new destinations along the Fraser River’s lower reaches. No, folks, this $3.5-billion bridge is a happening thing. Any day now, the lads and lasses will be poking long poles through
the alluvial soil searching for bedrock. Those bridge towers have to sit on something solid, and I’ve heard it’s a loooonnng way down. We’re going to miss our tunnel, as one might miss two weeks of the flu. All of us at one stage or another have sat in our cars down there and thought to ourselves, “I hope this sucker don’t bust and let the river in,” or “Here I am in the middle of a commute, and they’re talking on News 1130 about The Big One!” And sunglasses and headlights. What about them? One off, the other on. And on a bright summer day, going all the way to Vancouver with our headlights on stun. Oops! Goodbye old tunnel. Hello, whatever. Dunc Holmes
Use tunnel for rapid transit
Editor: So it looks like we are stuck with getting a 10-lane bridge that will bottleneck further down the line. It was suggested to me by an out of towner that seeing as there’s a push to rid the downtown core of cars, why don’t we use the George Massey Tunnel for rapid transit seeing as we already have the crossing. I know I would take it rather than drive downtown and try to find a parking space. Joan Seib

Olivia is a sweet ten pound female chihuahua around seven years old that came up to us over a year ago from California and was adopted by a wonderful family. Unfortunately, she never got over her fear of small, rambunctious children, so they need us to re-home her as they have two of those. She is a bit shy when you first meet her, but warms up quickly and loves to snuggle on your lap as often as possible. A home with another dog, big or small, would be ideal to help her with her confidence. She gets along great with dogs and would probably do fine with cats too. Olivia is perfection in her crate and good on leash, and once she knows her routine, she doesn’t have accidents in the house (remember she has a tiny bladder!) She LOVES being outdoors! Camping, hiking and playing are her favorite activities, aside from snuggling! As with all of our dogs, she is spayed and up to date on all shots and vaccines.

Review and make note of any substantial changes that have taken place in your life that may affect the asset allocation strategy of your investment portfolio. During discussions with your financial advisor, identify any important lifestyle changes to see how they affect your current investment planning objectives. Family and health considerations, career shifts or business plans that have changed, major household expenditures, children’s education expenses that are now on the horizon—these are all factors that may change your tolerance of investment risk or the balance you want between capital preservation and growth.

With any change in your investment profile, your advisor will recommend a review of your current asset allocation strategy, determining what percentage of your portfolio is invested in common equities, fixed income securities, and cash or cash equivalents. Asset mix varies with each individual, but it is valuable for every investor because it imposes discipline in your investing strategy. In other words, it helps you avoid market fads and emotional trading. Asset allocation can be more important than individual investments to the overall performance of your investment portfolio because it provides a diversity of different asset classes and a patient investment perspective that helps investors ride out short-term periods of market volatility.

Within each major asset class (equities and fixed income), a performance review of individual investments might be in order. Over the past year, an outperforming investment may have gained a too dominant position in your portfolio, affecting your asset allocation ratio as well as leaving you exposed to the performance of a single investment. It may be time to rebalance by reducing your position and looking for other investment opportunities. You will want to work with your advisor to see if any of these types of investments are suitable for your portfolio. Spring is the traditional time when we put our house in order and give the old place a breath of fresh air. We get God. Only in God can we have all our desires fully sanctified and satisfied. This is not less than ideal; it is the ideal. To state it plainly, if goodness is what we desire, we must go to
the source of all goodness: God. God is good. His goodness is not based on His mood or our behavior. This statement is based on God’s character. God — IS — Good. Always. Explain good — God. Psalm 119:36: You are good and do good; Teach me Your statutes. He is saying teach me about your unchanging goodness. Like a statute that forever keeps the same shape. Your goodness towards us never changes. So as believers we get to have a relationship with God who is good. A good life cannot be found in anything else but Him. It is hardly that which makes up the discount bin.

Sometimes the Christian life is difficult, but there is a difference between it being difficult and being lousy. Often we are seen as joyless prunes who have settled for a flavourless life. Sadly, many think that being Christian means settling for less. Recently while shopping I was reminded of this. I noticed a bin filled with discounted meat nearing its expiration date, damaged boxes and yesterday’s bread. Goods discounted because they were almost worthless. We should not think about the Christian life as that which was pulled out of the discount bin. It’s not less, it’s more. We are not missing out on life. Here’s why:

sawwassen’s Robb Lucy will be teaching Sharing your Legacy Through Digital Storytelling workshops through Simon Fraser University’s Continuing Studies this spring. The pair of 10-week workshops are for adults 55 and up. Participants will take a story from their life and turn it into a short video, which will be put up on a big screen and shown to family and friends at the course’s conclusion. “It can be a pretty emotional thing,” says Lucy, who taught the workshop last year. The SFU Continuing Studies website notes the offering is “back by popular demand.” Students choose what story they’d like to tell and Lucy provides examples and options on how to structure them. Next comes writing the story and then recording it. Participants then build a video with their own images along with other visuals and the recorded audio. “They become a producer,” says Lucy. The workshops are based on Lucy’s revised book How Will You Be

Wilson ready to wow at Motown Meltdown DAVE WILLIS
d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Ladner’s Garfield Wilson is once again lending his talent to support a good cause at the Motown Meltdown benefit show. “Every year I try to do something that is slightly bigger so that the audience gets their money’s worth,” he says, noting he’s working with local dance studio owner Jyla Davis and some of her alumni to “put together something really special.” Wilson, a singer, actor and personal trainer, is no stranger to the event, having been a part of it on numerous occasions. He says it’s an honour to be invited back year after year
to help the cause. The event, which features a number of artists (including Tsawwassen’s Tom Pickett) performing with a 12-piece band, benefits Seva Canada, a charitable organization that works to restore sight and prevent blindness in developing countries. Wilson is set to have a reoccurring role on Altered Carbon, an upcoming Netflix science fiction series. He says the “scope of the 10-episode series is incredible and is on par with the likes of Game of Thrones in terms of the production.” He’s also recently worked on such shows as ICE, Travellers and Van Helsing.
Motown Meltdown takes place Saturday, April 8 at the Commodore Ballroom, 868 Granville St., Vancouver. Doors are at 7 p.m. while showtime is at 8 p.m. Tickets are $32.50 in advance or $44 at the door. Visit ticketmaster.ca for tickets.

Ireland gives melange of impressions The Emerald Isle has varied landscapes, including brooding cliffs and rolling meadows
Ireland, on this my first visit, is a mélange of impressions. For starters, looking out of my plane window as we circle the countryside on our approach to Dublin, I can’t but think how appropriate the description “The Emerald Isle” is even though it borders on cliché. Below me are fields flung like green counterpanes over the land, bottle-green hedgerows that frame thread-like lanes, olive-green groves of trees which border clusters of townhouses, and lustrous green-leafed deciduous trees shading the lawns of stately county estates. I am on a two-week trip through both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and each day is alive with song and music. Many of these are more Irish-American than Gaelic, but most are familiar and well loved melodies not just in Ireland, but
all over the world. Danny Boy is almost Ireland’s national anthem: I hear it sung by a soulful tenor on the stage of Taylor’s Three Rock Pub in Dublin, played on the accordion by a street musician in Derry and on an Irish harp at a banquet in Cabra Castle. And then there’s Galway Bay, the wistful lyrics and music come alive as we drive along the Galway waterfront, the waves lit by the setting sun. In Kilarney, I’m reminded of the ballad of the American who wanted to buy it, and was told, “If you can buy all the stars in the sky, if you can buy two blue Irish eyes... then you can buy Kilarney!” Ireland’s landscapes are as varied as her moods. Pale mists drift across the waters around the remote Blaskit Islands, lending them an aura of mystery. Once home to hardy farmers, fishermen, writers and artists, their history is recorded in the Blasket Centre in Dunquin, in

stand in rugged silhouette against the sky reducing people walking along their crests to coloured dots. And then there are Irish legends like the one
they tell at the Giant’s Causeway. The huge piles of hexagonal basalt rocks strewn across the land and water were placed by an Irish giant, Fionn MacCool, to take up the challenge to fight the Scottish giant Benandonner who dwelt on the island of Staffa. Rural Ireland with its rolling meadows is dotted with country houses and fences. We stop one morning at a farm for a country tea with scones, homemade jam and thick whipped cream; on another day we are teatime guests at Sheans Horse Farm, where our chatty hosts and hostess ply us with hearty helpings of homemade biscuits and tarts. Sheep graze on steep hillsides near the rugged coast of Kerry and at Kissane Sheep Farm we watch a demonstration by a team of collies who, trembling with eagerness, bound into action at the sound of a whistle, and herd their flocks adroitly

At another corner of the shed, a nursery pen with ewes and their babies draws young visitors who delightedly stroke tiny lambs. Statues of John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara captivate visitors, and our group eagerly follows our guide through the streets of this real life movie set. Aldergrove defeats Delta in double overtime to win PJHL championship in 6 games

An emotionally-drained Darren Naylor was looking forward to booking a trip to Las Vegas for some well-deserved time lounging by the pool. His hockey team had given him everything they had for the last six months and came within two games of winning the Pacific Junior Hockey League championship. The Delta Ice Hawks’ best season in years concluded with a 3-2 double overtime game six loss to the Aldergrove Kodiaks before another big crowd at the Ladner Leisure Centre on Tuesday night. The heartbreaker came after the Hawks had won two straight to avoid elimination, including a thrilling game four that saw them score the tying goal with 13 seconds left to avoid a sweep. Four days later, they came ever-so-close to forcing a seventh and deciding game. “They didn’t quit. That’s for sure,” said Naylor. “I’m beyond proud right now. There are no
words. It starts with the veteran guys. Those 20-year-olds. They were really well-liked and guys would do anything for them.” It was Naylor’s first full year behind the Delta bench after coming onboard late last season and promptly leading the team to an opening round playoff upset against the first place North Vancouver Wolf Pack. The momentum carried over into this campaign. Naylor leaned on some key veteran players — Cam Cuthbert, Mark Trotman and Quinten Wideski — while surrounding them with plenty of young talent. The Hawks’ line-up Tuesday featured 11 players born in 1999 or later. The Kodiaks had three. Delta took Tom Shaw Conference regular season honours for the first time in over a decade, then produced playoff wins over North Vancouver and Grandview to earn a shot at the high-flying Kodiaks. What was shaping up as a mismatch evolved into a terrific battle. Game six was typical of how
much of the the series played out. Aldergrove enjoyed the edge in territorial play and a big advantage in the shot department but never could put enough pucks behind Delta standout goaltender Jordan Naylor to get comfortable. Ellijah Villo and Cuthbert exchanged first period power play goals. Alex Methodist then gave Delta a 2-1 lead midway through the second period. The Kodiaks answered right back with tremendous pressure, resulting in captain Eric Callegari’s tying goal less than two minutes later. A scoreless third featured a whopping 31 shots between the teams and terrific goaltending at both ends. The Hawks would have the best chance in the opening 10-minute overtime as Methorst was stopped in close by Dawson Rodin. Following a full 15-minute intermission, the Hawks carried much of the play in the second overtime, outshooting Aldergrove 11-4. However, Cameron Davitt ended the drama when the puck squirted out to him high in the

slot and he wired home the unassisted game winner. “Kudos to Aldergrove. They did what they had to do and definitely have some (key) veterans up front,” added Naylor. “I thought we were better every game and figured we would be in pretty good shape if we could get this to game seven (the following night). “I thought the difference was having the lead in the first two games and not getting a split. We are pretty young and it took us a while to figure it out. Once they did, they sure went hard.” Icing… Delta’s youth was very evident on its blueline with Naylor going with five defencemen much of the night including 16-year-old Magnus Cheung and impressive Delta Academy U18 prep affiliate Isiah Hendricks, who was partnered with 17-year-old rookie Nick Marsh. Cheung played mostly along side Cuthbert who was the team’s leading scorer in the playoffs with 18 points in 16 games to conclude his junior career.

Ladner Boys Soccer alive & well in Africa Team kits from now defunct club are donated to school and orphanage in Uganda villages The Ladner Boys Soccer Club lives on in other parts of the world. The club is no longer in operation after merging with Tsawwassen and Ladner Girls to form South Delta United. That left over 500 kits with Ladner Boys alone that were suddenly outdated. Headed by longtime coach and volunteer John O’Neil, the uniforms are being put to good use elsewhere. O’Neil provided some sets to Surrey’s Regent Christian Academy which sent a small team of senior age students and three teachers to Uganda earlier this month. The purpose of the trip was working alongside the “Father’s Heart Mobility” mission organization to help assemble and distribute wheelchairs and crutches to the disabled and disadvantaged in the regions surrounding. Near the end of the trip, while visiting the African Children’s Choir Primary school in Entebbe, the RCA team gave the soccer uniforms and other equipment donated by South Delta United to the school’s headmaster — Mr. Masika. They were also given to Bethany Village Orphanage — an initiative of African Renewal Ministries based in Ggaba. LYTTON, Roger Eric February 3, 1923 - March 26, 2017 Roger passed away peacefully March 26 at the age of 94 at the Delta View Life Enrichment Centre. Predeceased by his dear wife Joan (nee Conlin) in July, 1998, Roger is survived by his four children Linda, Corae, Michael (Bev), and David (Cheryl); and three grandchildren Dani, Taylor, and Spencer. Also special in his later life was dear friend Mary Tomlin of Victoria. Roger was born in Saanich in 1923 to parents Claude Lytton and mother Ethel (nee Bradshaw). He was the brother of Gerald, Brian, Evelyn W e n m a n , a n d J o y c e W h e e l e r, a l l w h o predeceased him. After the war, where he served as a medic in London, he met Joan at university, married in 1950, and started their family shortly after. Roger was a very hard worker and often worked two or three jobs to provide for his family. Much of his work life was in the quality control lab at Palm Dairies in Vancouver until he got the opportunity to move to Kampala, Uganda with Joan and David in 1969 to run a dairy. They were forced to leave when Idi Amin became President in 1971, and he resumed his career at Palm Dairies. Roger and Joan travelled extensively until her death in 1998. Roger was known for his kindness, humility, sense of humour, graciousness and hobbies over the years, such as wine making, bee keeping, having an aviary of budgies, exercising and gardening. He also loved to whistle. A very special thank you for Howard Palmer for his 50 years of friendship and special assistance in Dad’s last year of life. Especially in the helpful task of downsizing once Roger sold his home. A celebration will be held on Saturday, April 8 from 1:30-3:30 PM at the Skyhawk Restaurant at the Boundary Bay Airport, 7800 Alpha Way, Delta. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local Hospice Society.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Ria will be deeply missed by her loving sons Hank and Frank; grandchildren Dayna, Jessica, Madison and Max; longtime partner George; four sisters, four brothers, in-laws as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends worldwide. Ria was born in the Netherlands, the oldest of 10 children, to Jo and Neeltje vanSpronssen. Although Ria immigrated to Canada in 1958, a piece of her heart always remained ‘home’. Ria lived life to the fullest and touched the lives of many. A Celebration of Life will take place at Coast Tsawwassen Inn, 1665 56 Street, Tsawwassen, BC on Friday May 5, 2017 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation, in Ria’s name, to BC Children’s Hospital, 929 West 28th Avenue, Vancouver, BC - V5Z 4H4. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946.6040
