Ladner’s Vimy connection Pte. Stanley Smith among those killed in First World War battle century ago IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

As Canadians gather with others from around the world in France this Sunday to mark the centennial anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge, a Delta historian is doing his part to ensure the sacrifices of local soldiers are also remembered. Peter Broznitsky, who has been working to identify soldiers on the cenotaph in Ladner’s Memorial Park, said there is a local connection to the battle of Vimy Ridge. According to his research, Pte. Stanley C. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Smith of Ladner, was killed in action during the batPHOTO COURTESY OF tle. MARY ELLEN BOWLING He Pte. Stanley was said C. Smith was to be 18 killed in the at the battle of Vimy time, Ridge. but was actually 16 when he joined the 121st Western Irish in 1915. “I doubt that many in this community know that anyone from the community died in Vimy,” said Broznitsky. “This is a major historical moment of great significance to Canada, so people need to know about guys like Stan and the many others from across this country who gave up their lives.” Broznitsky said when he tells the story of Smith in his presentations, espe-

The local connections to the war don’t end at the battle of Vimy Ridge. Prior to the First World War, during the fall and winter of 1913-14, the Westham Island Junior Maple Leaf lacrosse team played against nearby opponents. They posed, 12 strong, some smiling, some stern, in a photo with the cup they had just won.

Soon, seven of them would join the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Of those seven, only three would return to Ladner. Four, who knelt in the same row for the team photo, lie in France or Belgium with their names etched in the cenotaph in Ladner. They include Smith, Basil French, Geoffrey Wallington McCallan and John Edward (Jack) Falk. “In researching casualties in the Great War, the war that was supposed to end all wars, historians use an estimate of one in 10,” said Broznitsky. “Ten per cent of the men who joined the Canadian fighting forces died. To have four boys lost from a team of 12 is sad, but not ter-

ribly unusual. Cities and towns and villages and hamlets across Canada will likely have a similar tale.” French was born in Calgary, lived in Saskatchewan and Ontario, and by 1913 it appears he was under the care of farmer Alfred Williams on Westham Island. He enlisted in 1915 in Vernon with the 62nd Battalion. He died in battle in 1916 in France. Ladner-born McCallan enlisted at age 18 with the 47th Westminster Battalion in 1915. His service with the 47th would have taken him into many hot spots. He died while awaiting demobilization, in hospital in 1919, of broncho-pneumonia, like-

ly caused by the Spanish Flu. Falk is the only foreign-born man on the Ladner cenotaph, born in Gottenborg, Sweden in 1896. By 1900 he was living on Westham Island with his farming parents Gustave and Ellen and his twin brother George. Falk enlisted at age 19 with the 121st at New Westminster in May 1916. He survived Vimy and Passchendaele, but was killed in action two months before the end of the war on Sept. 2, 1918. An estimated 30,000 Canadians will be in France for commemorative ceremonies, including students from Delta and South Delta secondary schools.

Protestors disrupt groundreaking Transportation minister in Delta to break ground on $3.5-billion, 10-lane bridge to replace tunnel SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It was supposed to be a celebration of the start of construction of the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project but protestors had something else in mind. Around three dozen opponents, including members of the Council of Canadians and Fraser Voices, were at a former fire hall in East Ladner Wednesday morning for what was supposed to be a shovels-in-the-ground photo op for the media. Transportation Minister Todd Stone, Mayor Lois Jackson and others were to speak outside but the boisterous protestors, several carrying placards and one determined to make full use of his megaphone, prompted officials to cram the press conference inside. “The entire Lower Mainland, the Mayors’ Council as well, is completely opposed to this project. It’s a 10-lane bridge that’s going to cost a fortune as a result of

Noting the project has received Agricultural Land Commission approval, Stone told reporters he respects people’s right to protest but said it was clear the provincial election campaign was already underway. The same individuals loudly chant-

ing outside will be at other events, he predicted. Stone then went over at length the many attributes of the $3.5-billion project, adding there’s overwhelming public support for it. Stone also categorically rejected the notion the tunnel was being replaced to accommodate the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, which isn’t contributing to the project, saying large ships aren’t able to turn around in the

Fraser River anyway. “We have talked about this project, we have consulted with British Columbians, including mayors, for over five years. Five years of talk. It’s time to move on to action. It’s time to build this bridge and alleviate this congestion point and put 9,000 people to work here in the Lower Mainland.” Jackson also defended the project, recalling how Delta called for a replace-

ment of the tunnel 30 years ago. She said the bridge is the best way to address the increasing population south of the Fraser River and thanked Premier Christy Clark “for her foresight and vision.” Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton, Todd May with the Richmond Farmers’ Institute and Richmond East MLA Linda Reid also spoke in favour. Following the the press conference, protestors

waited outside for Stone to exit, but he slipped by them by leaving through one of the bay doors and jumping into a waiting pickup truck. Police were on hand but there were no incidents. The tolled bridge, which includes an extensive series of road works, is to be completed in 2022. Stone said the toll will be in line with whatever is being charged at the Port Mann Bridge at the time.

The slide in house prices came to an end in South Delta last month. The latest sales figures from the Greater Vancouver Real Estate Board show the “benchmark” price for a detached single-family home in Tsawwassen was $1,179,600 in March, a 2.5 per cent increase over the previous month. The benchmark price in Ladner was $947,500, which was exactly the same as the month before. Home prices in South Delta, as well as the rest of the Lower Mainland, have been on a gradual decline since last summer. In the past six months, the price in Ladner has fallen by 11 per cent while in Tsawwassen the drop has been just over seven per cent. That’s a far cry from last year at this time when both communities saw a year-to-year increase of

The Greater Vancouver Real Estate Board notes a shortage of residential listings coupled with strong demand resulted in an increase in activity in March compared to February. However, last month’s sales were still down by almost 31 per cent from March 2016. In North Delta, house prices dropped slightly again last month with the “average price” listed at $889,713. According to the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board, sales activity in March was up from the previous month but still saw a

decrease of 26.4 per cent compared to March of last year. Meanwhile, Metro Vancouver this week called for substantial changes to the B.C. homeowner grant, property transfer tax and school property tax to ensure property taxation is more equitable for residents and businesses across the region. The recommendation follows a Metro Vancouver-commissioned independent analysis that found Greater Vancouver homeowners pay a disproportionate share of property taxes compared with the rest of B.C.

alk about a double-edged issue. News that the provincial government will, or might, offer only short-term water lot leases has been met with anger and uncertainty by property owners along the Fraser River. With the writ dropping next Tuesday to officially kick off the provincial election campaign, the prospect of the Liberal government alienating a segment of voters would, on the surface, appear to hurt the chances of the party’s candidate in Delta South, municipal councillor Ian Paton. Ten-year leases, like the ones the Corporation of Delta was offered for its properties along the Ladner waterfront, don’t provide the necessary length of tenure to invite investment and could lead to disastrous consequences in terms of economic activity or lack thereof. Victoria has said even though Delta was only offered 10-year terms, other leases would be determined on a case-by-case basis, so presumably some could get longer tenure, but at this point there’s a great deal of angst along the water. As much as the issue could prove to be troublesome for Paton, it could also offer him a silver lining of sorts. The Liberal candidate has made a concerted effort to position himself as someone who will speak out on behalf of the community, a strategic move given this riding has sent independent MLA Vicki Huntington to Victoria to do exactly that for the past eight years. In a bid to bring disaffected Liberals back into the fold and blunt the message of independent candidate Nicholas Wong, Paton has vowed to stand up to anyone to defend the best interests of the community. Some have viewed it as an idle promise in a legislature controlled by party whips, but to his credit, Paton has spoken up on the water lot issue. He hasn’t blasted the Liberal government like Huntington would, but he has been critical of the length of leases and voiced the need for Victoria to make changes. It’s almost as if the election gods have handed him an issue so he can prove himself, so he can show voters he won’t toe the party line if doing so isn’t good for Delta South. The comments have been measured thus far, but if the issue is as harmful to those along the river as some suggest, more will need to be said.

Our politicians still have a lot to learn when it comes to transit

Editor: Re: Qualtrough on board with Delta’s call for light rail, March 29 It always amuses me when politicians talk about transit when they know absolutely nothing on the subject. Both Delta MP Carla Qualtrough and Mayor Lois Jackson know almost nothing about transit, except for the politically acceptable catch phrases. Here is a quick primer: Light rail is a steel wheel on steel rail transit system that has the ability to operate in mixed traffic (streetcar) if need be. Rapid transit, the Canada Line and the Expo/Millennium lines are not light rail at all,

rather they are part of the “heavy” rail family called lightmetro. Both of Metro Vancouver’s lightmetro lines are driverless, thus unable to operate in mixed traffic. LRT made light FILE PHOTO metro obsolete in the Writer says SkyTrain is obsolate 1980s because it lete. is cheaper to build, stations have platforms maintain and operate only 40 metres long, half and has the added benefit the length of the SkyTrain of higher capacity. stations. $1.5 billion and must be done before any expansion takes place. The proposed bridge replacing the perfectly good George Massey Tunnel is not being designed for rapid transit at all, for if it were, it must be able to accommodate 300-ton trains and unless tracks are laid, when constructed, rapid transit will never cross the bridge. Qualtrough and Jackson are the epitome of the problem with regional transit: they know little or nothing about it and instead of admitting to this, they oversee the spending of billions of taxpayers’ dollars on grossly overpriced vanity projects. D. Malcolm Johnston

New tunnel is better option

Editor: The provincial government is actively promoting a bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel as a means of easing tunnel traffic. There is much misleading and wrong information being put forward about this project. Everyone agrees that a new crossing is needed to ease traffic, so the real issue is between a quick, inexpensive tunnel or an expensive, unjustifiable bridge. If the provincial government cared that people are stuck in traffic, then semi-trucks would be banned from the tunnel during peak traffic periods and the port would operate 24/7. This is what every major port in North America does to ease traffic.

Neighbours fall for ‘sold’ prank

Editor: Thanks to Julie and Garrett at Fraser Elliott Group, we managed to get a “SOLD” sign on our front lawn for our neighbours to see when they woke up last Saturday morning. We know our neighbours well. The game plan was to tell neighbours someone made us an all-cash offer we couldn’t refuse, hence the reason for the sign going up so fast. Everybody fell for the April Fools prank. Yup, our little town of Tsawwassen is the best place to live. Couldn’t imagine pulling off this prank in what we call “the city” as we wouldn’t know anyone. Just wait for next year. A year to come up with a more intricate hoax. Kirsti Mattson

Our Famous

Since one semi-truck displaces four to five cars, such a ban would add road capacity for commuters immediately. But the government won’t do that - it wants traffic to be a mess. Why? Christy Clark and the Liberals want to force public support for a bridge in order to run massive freighters of LNG, coal and jet fuel up the Fraser River. With this bridge, commuters will see years and years of construction traffic with at best dubious return on investment, while the Liberals presumably collect donations from those who stand to profit from it. This all assumes the bridge doesn’t fall over because the intention is to build it on soft soils. Barbara Huisman

The Corporation of Delta is planning to build a bridge to complete a walking trail in Ladner

Harbour Park. Delta council approved a staff recommendation to hire a consultant to design the bridge. It will complete a pedestrian loop that was interrupted after the

Moo

Moo is a truly special guy, with a quirky personality that will always make you smile. We think he is a three year old catahoula mountain dog/pitty mix and is around fifty-five pounds. We call Moo a “unicorn”, as after proper introductions, he is good with everybody; cats, big and small dogs, and kids! Of course everyone else has to use their manners as well! Moo makes a great breed ambassador, and is working hard and making great progress on his crate training and housebreaking. He may need a little time and patience to get into the swing of things in a new environment, but this boy is so worth it. He is a mellow guy at home, and also enjoys a good walk, run or bike ride. He is very good on leash with a walking harness. Mr. Moo has some food allergies that are easily controlled with a proper diet. As with all our dogs, he is neutered and up to date on all shots and vaccines.

Reach Child and Youth Society executive director Renie D’Aquila accepts a cheque from Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton.

AMIR SCHURR

I have been a Delta Optimist carrier for nearly three years. I love having a newspaper route because it is a chance to get fresh air, time to earn extra pocket money, and to see all the smiling people I deliver to. A newspaper route has been a perfect first job. All thanks to my dad. I give special thanks to my dad for helping me for a year, and special thanks to Delta Optimist for giving me a newspaper route.

Province provides Reach with $20,000 donation

Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton recently presented Reach Child and Youth Society executive director Renie D’Aquila with a donation of $20,000 for the organization’s capital campaign. “We are very pleased that the province of B.C. continues to invest in infrastructure needed to support children and youth with special needs as this new communitybased child development centre will be a significant resource to our commu-

nity,” said D’Aquila. The funding is in addition to the Ministry of Children and Family’s commitment of $211,346 to fund 20 new preschool spaces for children aged three to five. Once complete, the three-storey centre will allow Reach to double the number of children served over time and it will serve as a place of learning and belonging for children with special needs and their families. Trades students in Delta will benefit from new equipment thanks to a $15 million investment from the provincial government. The Delta School District will receive $387,319 over the next three years to purchase equipment, including laser cutters, CNC routers and hydraulic presses. The Youth Trades Capital Equipment Program will see $7.5 million dispersed during the current school year. The remaining $7.5 million will be distributed in 2017-18 ($4 million) and 2018-19 ($3.5 million). Delta is among 59 school districts receiving funding over the next three years. The program is designed to increase participation in youth trades programs and the number of students that continue on to further trades training programs. To be eligible for fund-

ing, school districts must have demonstrated the capital investment supports the delivery of one or more Industry Training Authority (ITA) youth trades programs. The ITA funds six youth programs in the province, including the Youth Work in Trades program, which is highly successful in Delta. Last November, Delta received $40,000 in funding from the province for that program. “Funding to the Youth Work in Trades program makes it possible for us to elevate our resources and create more learning opportunities for our students,” said Brian Tivy, Delta School District’s coordinator career transitions and ADST. “We are very proud of our trades and apprenticeship programs, which engage students in a wide variety of skills and offer unique opportunities for learning, career preparation and personal growth,” Tivy said.

s Vicki Huntington wraps up a remarkable era in B.C. politics, the outgoing MLA is hopeful her successor will continue to represent Delta South differently than other ridings and not be afraid to ask the tough questions. With the writ scheduled to drop next week and a provincial election campaign set to get underway, Huntington reflected on her time in provincial office in an interview with the Optimist at her Ladner constituency office. “It’s been an absolutely amazing experience representing this community,” she said. “I truly do think Delta is one of the most

political spectrum. Although her power base is primarily made up of disaffected Liberals, many NDP supporters have strategically voted for her, while the Greens didn’t field a candidate in Delta South last time out of respect. Although she comes from a right-wing background, Huntington isn’t afraid to speak out and support any issue she cares about, regardless of conventional political leanings. That appeal to both the right and left, as well as the environmentalist camp, combined with her candor, has made her a formidable force. In the legislature, Huntington managed to make herself heard and raised a number of issues, which garnered respect from fellow MLAs on both sides of the floor.

Parents, have you had the conversation with your children? You know that one that speaks to the life altering changes and the impact it has on significant others in your life. No, I’m not speaking about the sex talk, though that may very well be the timely conversation for your present family realities. I’m talking about the other end of the age, time and space, social impact continuum. The time of life when body, mind and quality of life begins to show the wear and tear of a life fully lived. The conversations that feel too vulnerable to mention. Where fierce independence begins to give way to care, support and eventually dependence on others

to continue to allow quality of life its fullest expression for each and every day possible. It’s not always an easy conversation or ongoing engagement with your spouse, adult children or

other significant people in your life. Sometimes physical or emotional distance is a barrier between family members. Yet it is so very important. I encourage you to open that conversation with your adult children, find a trusted friend, a minister or pastor who can come alongside you and help to negotiate the layers of personal, physical, medical, residential, legal and financial possibilities. There are amazing resources available. Our immediate and extended family have just been thrust into this reality and if you haven’t been talking about and actively preparing for the changes that are inevitable, the impact can be traumatic. But it doesn’t have to be.

He says it’s the first time the festival has accepted a gallery application from Ladner and possibly even Delta. The photos in the show are portraits of people from the community who have an interesting story, he notes. He adds each current member of the group will have at least one image in the show. Long-time actor Tom Pickett is keeping busy this month with a handful of singing gigs around Vancouver. Music is another way of connecting with people and telling a story, which is what he does with live theatre, says the Tsawwassen resident. “You never know what that might mean to someone,” says Pickett. He explains he fell into acting trying to support his music career and “it’s the acting thing that’s taken off.” Music was always and still is his passion, Pickett says, although he’s quick to add that he loves live theatre. ElderCollege presentation looks at kinder economy

Guy Dauncey returns to ElderCollege Delta next weekend with a presentation — The Economics of Kindness — based on an upcoming book. Today’s economy seems to have become a kindness-free zone in which the benefits go to the rich, while ordinary people and communities suffer, and nature is assaulted. Based on the competitive pursuit of self-interest, capitalism seems to lie at the core of many of our troubles. There is good news,

April is Delta Poetry Month and the Corporation of Delta is inviting would-be poets to create poetry out of magnets displayed at Delta recreation centres throughout the month. “This initiative came about as a suggestion from a community member. We are encouraging people to be creative and have fun with poetry on the

fly,” says Delta Museum & Culture curator Darryl MacKenzie in a news release. Participants are encouraged to create a poem, take a picture of it and post the photo to social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) with the hashtag #DeltaPoetry2017. There will be a participatory prize draw at the end of the month.

April is National Poetry Month, which was established in 1998 by the League of Canadian Poets. Poetry magnet display dates and locations: • April 4 to 10 — North Delta Recreation Centre • April 11 to 17 — South Delta Recreation Centre • April 18 to 24 — Sungod Recreation Centre • April 24 to 30 — Ladner Leisure Centre

Gallery and workshop put Birds in Focus

A pair of Birds in Focus events will take place this month in Tsawwassen. A visual presentation session hosted by the Boundary Bay Park Association, Delta Naturalists Society and the Corporation of Delta takes place on Saturday, April 15 at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Browse art and photographic prints by local artists in the arts centre gallery from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. while enjoying light refreshments. Then sit back and enjoy presentations by expert bird and nature photographers Michelle Lamberson, Connor Stefanison and Allen Bargen. Coffee, tea and cookies will be served during a short break. To register call 604-943-9437 or e-mail jhamlin@delta.ca. Tickets cost $5. The second Birds in Focus event is a photography workshop on Sunday, April 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at historic Cammidge House in Boundary Bay Regional Park. The Boundary Bay Park

Ursula Easterbrook and her beloved sheep dog Farley travelled widely to photograph nature. Association and Metro Vancouver are hosting the workshop that will provide budding photographers

with tips on nature photography. After the “classroom” session there will be an

opportunity to get upclose shots of captive raptors, a great way to practice new-found skills.

Since the session starts early, coffee, tea, juice and muffins will be provided. Cost is $20. Advance regis-

tration is required by calling 604-432-6359. For details on both Birds in Focus events, visit the Boundary Bay Park Association website at www.boundarybayparkassociation.wordpress.com. Both events are dedicated to the late Ursula Easterbrook, a Tsawwassen photographer who initiated the Birds in Focus program and delivered it for several years. Easterbrook died in February after a courageous fight with cancer. She was 76. Easterbrook was an active member and director of the Delta Naturalists Society for many years, a former president of the Cammidge House Committee in Boundary Bay Regional Park and a founding member of the Boundary Bay Park Association. Delta Naturalists Society president Tom Bearss described Easterbrook as a true nature lover who was a real champion and protector of the environment. She will be sorely missed, he said.

Foam rolling combats muscle tightness Well on Your Way P.J. WREN

I have found people fall into two camps when it comes to foam rolling. Members of Camp A know about foam rolling and do it as regularly as they can. Those in Camp B have heard of foam rolling, but they just aren’t quite sure why they need to do it. In today’s column, I am going to break down what foam rolling is as well as show four moves that will hit all the tight areas in the body. Foam rolling is a form of myofascial release, which is just a fancy word for releasing muscle tightness and trigger points, or “knots,” in the muscles.

It’s been used for years by professional athletes and therapists, and now can be found in gyms and studios throughout (at The Studio we offer two onehour Stretch & Roll classes a week). Rolling is likened to the “poor person’s” massage and a regular romp with your roller will help prevent injuries, improve your spinal alignment and posture, and increase your flexibility and mobility. Here are some tips when rolling: • Keep your rolling slow and controlled. • Move in multiple directions, don’t just roll up and down and down and up. • Add side-to-side movements, cross-friction and flexing and extending of the joint being rolled. • Roll for 30 to 60 seconds an area. • Use your arms and legs to help move your body and roll the roller. • Rolling a muscle may be a little painful, however, you don’t want to be screaming in pain. Rolling too hard on the muscles

will activate the muscle spindles, causing more muscle tightness. That’s not our goal with rolling. Here are some exercises to try: 1. SHOULDERS, SIDES & LATS Lie on your back with the foam roller behind your shoulders. Lace your fingers loosely behind your head and lean your upper back into the foam roller. Brace your abs and glutes for stability, and slowly press into the roller on your left side, raising your right shoulder. Roll towards your left underarm to the bottom of your rib cage. 2. OUTER HIP, THIGHS & IT BAND Lie on your side with the foam roller under your left hip. Using your bottom elbow and back foot for support, slowly roll down from your hip to just above your knee. Remember to roll side-to-side as well so you get some of the outer edges of the quads and hamstrings. 3. PIRIFORMIS Sit with your left glute on top of the roller, knees

bent and leg crossed over left. Shift your weight to the left side, rolling over the glutes until you feel tension in your right upper glute. Roll up and down as well as side-to-side. 4. THORACIC SPINE & PEC STRETCH

Lie face-up, feet shoulder-width apart and flat on the floor. Centre the roller beneath your mid-back. Interlace your hands and place them behind the head, allowing the arms to hold onto the head. Keeping the elbows back, extend over the roller and

hold. Make sure the lower back doesn’t extend — think about pushing the lumbar spine into the ground as you are going over the roller. PJ Wren is owner of The Studio. Join their Stretch & Roll classes at www.thestudio.ca.

Pricilla Westlake made history last weekend in Australia. The Delta lawn bowler won the women’s singles title at the World Youth Championships at the Broadbeach Bowls Club in Gold Coast, Australia, marking the first time a Canadian has ever medaled at the event. “It was really exciting and very unexpected,” said Westlake. “I think this is a great win, obviously for myself, but especially for Canada, so I’m excited to be a part of that. It’s the proudest moment of my life and something I don’t think I’m going to be able to top for a while.” Westlake finished the women’s singles round robin in third place with a record of 8-2. With her only losses against Malaysian Noorazlinda Zakaria and Australian Chloe Stewart, she advanced to the quarter-finals against New Zealand’s Tayla Bruce. In the battle to 21 shots, Westlake proved superior, winning 21-16. “The win against Tayla was super exciting. New Zealand is the top bowls nation in the world, so that win was considered really the first upset of the tournament,” she recalled. The win over Bruce gave Westlake another

shot against Stewart in the semi-final. Stewart came out hot, jumping to an early 12-3 lead, but Westlake battled back to claim another 21-16 win. Westlake had her work cut out for her in the final as she faced off against defending champion Ellen Ryan of Australia. The Canadian got off to a slow start, giving up six shots before getting on the board. After rallying back to tie the game at 9-9, the duo exchanged shots and were still tied at 13-13 a few ends later. Westlake appeared to gain some momentum by grabbing four shots to increase the score to 17-13, but Ryan was not to be outdone. The defending champion battled back to tie the game at 17. After exchanging blows to make it 18-18, Ryan took a 20-18 lead, but Westlake scored three points to claim the gold medal with a 21-20 win. “This was the third time at this event and I hadn’t been successful the past two years, so I thought maybe third time lucky and I could medal,” Westlake said. “Getting a bronze medal would have been phenomenal, so I’m just so ecstatic winning the gold medal.” In mixed pairs, Westlake and her partner Luke Caldwell of Peterborough, Ont., finished the event

Delta Islanders make trade with eye to the future

The Delta Islanders and Langley Thunder have pulled off the first trade of the new B.C. Junior ‘A’ Lacrosse League season. With an eye to the future, Delta traded MacKenzie Rope to Langley for defensive standout and the number

one pick in the 2016 midget draft Connor Evers and Logan Bebb. Islanders’ general manager Greg Rennie called the deal a “good lacrosse trade” for both teams. “We have seven offensive rights in junior so someone had to go,” said Rennie. “MacKenzie was finding it difficult coming out from Maple Ridge, so

for him, he gets a fresh start in Langley. For us, we get Logan who will play for us, while Connor has one more year in Maple Ridge intermediate. Connor is a great, young player and hopefully we can get him into some games this season. “Bottom line, both of these young guys have the potential to be great play-

ers in this league, so we are very happy with this deal.” Delta has started training camp as it preps for the new season and is practicing at the Ladner Leisure Centre for the next few weeks. Rennie said it is early yet, but he is already impressed with the makeup of the team.

“I think we are going to surprise a lot of people,” he said. “People have suggested that we will be young and inexperienced, but the young guys we have are good, character guys and are already picking up the systems.” Delta heads to Red Deer over the April 22nd weekend for a pre-season tournament.

Canadians already preparing for next year Major Midget team hosts evaluation camp just four days after falling short in hard-fought finals IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

You would think that after grinding to within one win of a provincial Major Midget hockey title some well-deserved time off would be in order. Not so for the coaching staff of the Greater Vancouver Canadians. After a mere four days off, the coaches were back on the ice preparing for next season. The Canadians fell short of a provincial title, losing a hard-fought best-ofthree series to the Cariboo Cougars. The Canadians picked up a 2-1 win in double overtime in Prince George, but were shutout the rest of the series, losing 2-0 and 4-0. The Cougars will now host the six-team Telus Cup National Midget Championship starting April 24. Although disappointed with the outcome, Canadians head coach Phil Alalouf said he was proud of his team, which

people who didn’t think we would get past the Thunderbirds and we did and then when we took on the Chiefs. Lots of people thought that would be over in two games and we beat them. Then we head up to Prince George and

team next year, we are actually going to have a good group of second years, a good handful of core third years and then will have our four or five first years so I’m excited for the new season.” Alalouf said the coaching staff is in the process of making their final player commitments. The team will be back on the ice starting in early May. “That will continue throughout the summer and by August we will have a team put together,” Alalouf said. “Our job and what Major Midget is all about is developing the players to their next level. If we win championships then you get to reap those rewards, but when you see where the guys were at this time last year and now see them and see where they are going, it really is a chance to have another group of guys come in and we work with them and try and be as successful as that group was. That’s the fun part — that’s the best part of coaching.”

We had our all-star game on Sunday and you look at the guys, and they battled for spots. As much as I thought we would have a real young

OUR TESTIMONIALS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES! I would recommend Fraser Elliott to my friends and family. As a single parent I am so busy and I wasn't looking forward to listing my house but the Fraser Elliott team efficiency and knowledge made it a great experience.

When we called Fraser Elliott it was only a matter of hours that he and Garrett, his teammate, were at our door to view the property and to set an asking price. They were very efficient and helpful. They sold our home within a week and we were amazed at their expertise and handling of the sale. Thank you so much Fraser's team for all your hard work. Well done!

- Norma

- j&h

First of all thank you so very very much for the lovely basket! That was so so nice! Mike & I want to let everyone at the Fraser Elliott Group know how impressed we were- and how thankful we are that we hired you to sell our home. I honestly can say with the exception of selling the home we loved- the experience was unbelievably painless. It took us a couple of months to decide we were going to list. Garrett came and met with us, then we called you back a month later. Fraser came to meet with us- we still weren't sure! Garrett & Fraser did not push. Then we called again and they both came! They spent hours with us- answering our questions, and offering tips. They were so so patient. We finally signed on the dotted line. Garrett & Fraser suggested a listing price of over $300,000 compared to other Realtors速. They said if we were patient, they thought we could get that price or close to it! They said they could price the house to sell in a day or two-but felt we would leave money on the table. When we decided on a list price, they also warned us there would likely not be bidding wars at that price point, nor would we sell in a day. Everything they told us- came true. I was a little nervous the house wouldn't sell because they didn't do open houses. Not having open houses was wonderful! We got a few people looking each week- apparently if they are serious buyers- that is all we need. The market was slowing down when we finally decided to list, so I have to admit there were a few times I was nervous. I didn't need to be. The entire process was a well-oiled machine. They seem to be one happy efficient unit- working together for the client. A big shout out to Julie, Rachel, Garrett & Fraser and a side shout to Amber 'aka pitbull' for closing the deal and not taking any flack! Now we are looking for our next place. Poor Jennifer! She has been especially patient, responsive and fun to go see places with. She is extremely knowledgeable- and we feel like she really wants us to buy a place we can be happy in! She doesn't just want to close any deal. So Jennifer thank you! I so appreciate all the tips and endless stream of knowledge you seem to have. Hopefully soon, you can sell us a home! Thank you all again so much. Mike & I really were thrilled with your group! - Sincerely, Sharon Donald After selling my house, trying to decide what would come next could have been a very hard thing to do. I called Jennifer, and that made all the difference. She was invested in me as a person, stayed in contact, listened attentively, and was just what I needed; a trusted opinion who had thorough knowledge in a market I was unsure of. With her guidance and ability to focus on what I needed (and after viewing many properties, thank you, Jen!), I know I made a decision I can be proud of, and I couldn't have done it without her, or the Fraser Elliott Team. My new home is absolutely perfect for me. - Cory The decision to sell our home and relocate was one of the hardest we've ever made. The decision to use Fraser Elliott's team made it all worth it! Not only were we able to ask more than we thought possible but we were offered over our asking price, and accepted. The level of professionalism from the initial meeting with Fraser, to the staging, photography, and showings, was incredible. We were kept in the loop with each step and never felt that anything was beyond our control. With this being our first home we were new to the whole process of selling and the entire team made us feel at ease. We owe so much to Fraser, Garrett, Amber, Julie, Rachel and Jennifer. We are forever grateful and would recommend their services to anyone looking to buy or sell in beautiful South Delta! - Ryan and Danyelle Loyer

I chose the Fraser Elliott Group to make the sale of my North Delta apartment happen and it did! I personally was confident that I had made a good choice. All the team were respectful and made me feel that my ideas and opinion were valued. Communication was pleasantly and skillfully done by Phil. The end result for the times was good and I would certainly consult them if ever needed. - Lois To the Fraser Elliott Team, I'd like to thank you for a job well done selling my house. Your team is very professional and competent. No matter what questions I had, you people got back to me immediately with the answers and confirmed by other members of your team. You were always easy to reach, and your expertise and knowledge was very much appreciated. I would highly recommend your team to anyone needing a Realtor. PS. The free moving van was a surprise and really helped, Thank You. - Ralph Rasmussen Fraser Elliott is a step up from other firms with whom I've listed. They delivered on marketing with professional photos and targeted Facebook marketing. They sold my commercial strata office unit in a matter of weeks, and for a very satisfactory price. Additionally they work as a team, not individual Realtors, and this ensures everything keeps moving. I would certainly recommend their services. - Levi

THANKS TO ALL OUR CUSTOMERS!

- Kari I had the honour to retain Ms. Michelle Wright as my sale representative in the sale of our house in Sunshine Hills of North Delta. Michelle's constant cheerfulness is most contagious. Her high optimism, continuous hard work and due diligence presented us with two(2) offers in the rather "soft" winter season! Michelle is a true professional in her field and is definitely an asset to the agency. I look forward to seek her assistance in my future real estate transactions. Thank you Michelle.

I'd like to say we developed a great relationship with Fraser's team while we went through the sales process, but the truth is we didn't have time. It was a week from signing up with the team to signing the sale documents! What more can we say? A professional team that executes on their promise like a well oiled machine! They make magic. Bench strength we never imagined. No wonder they are award winning! Not using them would really be your loss. Choosing Fraser's team was the best decision we could have made.Thank you Fraser, Garrett, Julie, Amber, Rachel, James the photographer, and Kashmir the stager. You far exceeded our expectations. We're sold!! - Ray and Joanne M

Garrett gave an appraisal for my home and I considered other realtors, but Garrett's straightforward approach and no pressure attitude led me to list with him. I had reservations about selling during the winter especially after the major snowstorms we have experienced. They sent out a photographer who had to wade in a foot of snow to photograph the outside and despite the weather, the realtor's open house still took place shortly after. It was a roller coaster ride of negotiations which Garrett and Jennifer navigated with great skill and professionalism. The end result was the house was sold in a week. Overall, it was a great experience with the Fraser Elliott Real Estate Group. Well done. I would definitely recommend the Fraser Elliott Group to others.

The Fraser Elliott Team, l'd like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to you and your entire staff on what l consider to be an outstanding job on the sale of my condo. From our first meeting you told me that you would treat the sale of my condo the same way you would handle selling a $3 million home. You and your team stood by your word and did exactly that. I couldn't be happier! With the extremely tight window time you and your team was working with you made it all fit together. An outstanding performance by you all and my thanks and gratitude for all your hard work. I feel privileged to have met and worked together with such a congenial group as yourselves and will pass my positive recommendations on the appropriate people. Thanks again for the outstanding effort you all put in for me. Sincerely,

- Don W

- Dave Ennis

- John Chow

Our experience working with the Fraser Elliott group was excellent. We were very happy with all aspects of the service provided - sales agent, photographer and staging advice. Everything we needed was done in a very efficient manner and we were always kept in the loop about what was happening. Phil was a great sales agent. He was always on time, always answered my questions and was professional and honest. He was always upbeat and positive as well as thoughtful and understanding. As a busy mom with three little kids at home, Phil always took my concerns seriously and worked to accommodate our needs. I was very happy with our experience and I recommend Fraser Elliott Group to friends and family in the future! - Sara Raouf Thank you to the Fraser Elliott group for selling our townhouse. We were really impressed with our initial meeting with Garrett, with the staging consultation and with the professional photographs taken of our townhouse. A great big thank you to Julie, Rachel, Jennifer and Amber. They worked really hard on all of our showings and promptly got back to us to let us know the outcome after each one. We would highly recommend the Fraser Elliott group to anyone looking to sell their home - Bryant and Heather

From start to finish, Yolanda made the finding and purchasing of our new home smooth and stress free. She was so great to work with, every question or request we had she got back to us right away. I would not hesitate to recommend her to anyone looking to purchase a new home. - Lisa Sangara

We couldn't be happier with the experience we had selling our house with Fraser Elliott group! Everything was done in an efficient way, from the staging, professional photos, showings and negotiations. Philip did a great job selling the place and Garrett was able to negotiate the deal we wanted. All in two weeks! If we ever need to sell again we know where to go! - Liselott and Mike McFarlane

The Fraser Elliott group has been a pleasure to work with (again). I am a repeat customer who is impressed by their attentiveness, responsiveness and their knowledge. Jennifer has been a wonderful help in supporting the sale and purchase process working tirelessly to ensure that I was able to get the best price and that all the dates lined up. I am so thankful to have her on my team. I would recommend Jennifer and the rest of the team to anyone I know and be confident in the level of service and expertise they provide to clients.
