Horsing Around in Delta

So you took your kid to Cavalia Odysseo and now they want a horse! What to do?

Ask Auntie Sue! By Dr. Susan Thompson, Crescent Stables Ltd. At our Riding School, we have more than once experienced something we call “The Cavalia Effect”. This is a sudden, dramatic increase in the number of calls from parents about enrolling their child in riding lessons. For weeks after the Cirque du Soleil Cavalia show leaves town, we have moms and dads asking what to do with their now pony mad child? We also get calls from adults, who rode as a child, saw the Cavalia performances, and realized that life is just not complete without a horse in it. So what can you do if you have a sudden craving to start riding again, or have a child that has taken to trying to create a saddle for the dog? There are a few options for getting involved in horses…. First, visitors are welcome at Crescent Stables at any time! Visitors do need to check in with staff, as not every single horse loves to meet new people, and some of the horses have very restricted diets for medical reasons. Some horses are subject to drug testing as well, as they are competitive athletes, so if they lick the Voltaren off your bad arm, there could be trouble! Watch some lessons, see some horses, watch where you step J Second, single lessons can be purchased for children (or adults), as a trial to see if you like

it. No extra charge for having to pry the child off the pony at the end (or the grown up off the horse). Lesson Packages can be a reasonable way to go, or we can help you buy a horse if you just want to go all out…beware having a horse includes having a very messy car generally.

your dog is ok with wearing a saddle. See you soon down on the farm at Crescent Stables!

SAMPLE

Summer Camps are another way to introduce riding to your child, or to continue their pony immersion. Finally, some people just want to come and learn how to be around the horses, brush them, take them out for grass, commune with nature along side the horse… there is something very relaxing in just standing next to a grazing horse.

Crews working on a Metro Vancouver water main replacement on 52nd Street north of Highway 17 will soon move south of the highway, effectively closing one of two access routes in Tsawwassen.

Tough traffic times ahead

52nd Street to be closed for months for regional water main replacement SANDOR GYARMATI

Drivers are being warned to get ready for frustration while trying to get in and out of Tsawwassen. Traffic congestion on 56th Street is expected for several months thanks to the regional district commencing a water main replacement along 52nd Street, which will see the street completely shut down for most of the day until the project is completed. The work is scheduled to begin April 24 and finish in mid-August. “This is a sizable job and there will be some significant traffic disruptions as a result,” civic engineer-

erLawntec Ladn

ing director Steven Lan told Delta council this week. The work is part of a bigger project that was divided into several phases. Phase one, from Highway 17 to the northern edge of Tsawwassen Commons, was completed last September. Phase two was divided into a couple of sections with the northern section from Tsawwassen Commons to 28th Avenue and the southern section from 12th Avenue to Highway 17. Work on the northern section commenced in January and will be completed mid-April. Soon to commence is the lengthy stretch along 52nd Street on the south side of Highway 17, which

will result in significant traffic disruption and delays. Although it’s a Metro Vancouver project, Delta engineering staff reviewed a number of options with the contractor and agreed the best option, according to Lan, is not to have singe-lane alternating traffic on 52nd Street. He noted that would result in waits between 15 minutes to a half-hour. Instead, the road will be completely shut down. A full road closure will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. but a one-way, northbound lane on 52nd Street will be allowed in the active work zone from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. to accommodate the morning rush. Lan noted closing 52nd

Street will allow for the project to be completed a couple of months sooner than had traffic been allowed on it. His report to council notes Metro Vancouver is planning to establish a traffic management panel that will include representatives from Delta’s fire and police departments, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, Tsawwassen First Nation and traffic consultants. The panel is to meet weekly to discuss and resolve traffic issues. “Not withstanding all of that, we do anticipate significant congestion along 56th Street and we would request the travelling public’s cooperation as Metro Vancouver is undertaking

this project,” Lan said. “Unfortunately, because of this type of construction and complexity of the construction, it has necessitated the full road closure along the construction zone.” Metro Vancouver will launch an information campaign warning residents what’s to come. Work on the third phase of the water main replacement, from 28th Avenue to 34B Street, is scheduled to begin this August. A final phase is currently in the design stage with no schedule finalized. Lan said the new pipe will be large enough to accommodate future growth, but it’s also needed because the current pipe leaks.

Work is now underway for the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project. Preliminary construction has begun on the 10-lane bridge and associated road works with site preparation in order to improve ground conditions for future lane widening in Delta and Richmond. The site preparation includes ditch improvements and the placement of preload material on soft soils immediately adjacent to the existing highway corridor. Hall Constructors was awarded the $11.5 million contract by the provincial government. Delta council recently agreed to relax the noise bylaw so the preload work can take place between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. along Highway 99 from Highway 17 to 104th Street. Work that will be done overnight, and possibly weekends as well, includes placement of concrete

months but the approved noise variance is for just six months. Council may be provided with a future report to extend the

noise variance, at which time staff will provide an update on any community noise impacts. Meanwhile, B&B Heavy

Civil Construction was awarded a $5.8 million contract for site preparation in Richmond along Highway 99, between Bridgeport Road and Steveston Highway. Last week, Transportation Minister Todd Stone was in Delta for a media event to celebrate the start of construction, but the groundbreaking had to be cancelled when vocal protestors showed up. He insisted the project was much needed for Delta and the rest of the south of the Fraser communities. Mayor Lois Jackson was also on hand at the event, which had to be moved indoors, staunchly supporting the $3.5-billion bridge project, which is scheduled for completion in 2022. Last week, the Musqueam First Nation said the project lies in the heart of their territory and the government has not received their consent to proceed. Across the river, the Tsawwassen First Nation is supporting the project.

The Delta police are asking drivers to make a pledge to remove valuables in the hopes of curbing a rise in theft from vehicles. According to police, there continues to be an upward trend of theft from vehicles, both locked and unlocked. So far this year there has been a 39 per cent increase over 2016 (202 incidents compared to 145). DPD public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks said police want to raise awareness and engage the community in curbing this

problem. “People consistently leave items of value in their vehicle, which serves as an enticing invitation to the opportunistic criminal to steal not only your valuables, but your identity,” said Brooks. “People must protect not only items of monetary value such as wallets, iPads, tools, but items that give way to identity theft if in the wrong hands

such as passports, Nexus cards, credit cards, drivers’ licenses and so on.” Earlier this week, Chief Neil Dubord kicked off the department’s Leave it Empty initiative that police hope will not only raise awareness, but also engage the community in reducing these incidents. “We are asking citi-

NOTHING TO STEAL BUT THIS SIGN. PLEASE DON’T STEAL THIS SIGN.

zens to work with us and take the ‘Leave it Empty’ pledge, which can be done through the deltapolice. ca website,” added Brooks. “Take the pledge and act on it.” To increase visibility and send a message to wouldbe thieves, DPD has made placards to hang in vehicles. The placard reads: “Nothing to steal but this sign. Please don’t steal this sign.” On the flip side of the placard are prevention tips for car owners. The placards are available starting today at all community police stations and at the main police buildings in Ladner and North Delta.

Police seek information in arson investigation IAN JACQUES

Delta police are hoping information from the public will lead to the arrest of the person responsible for a late December fire in North Delta. On Dec. 26, 2016 at approximately 2 p.m., police and Delta firefighters responded to a report of a fire at A Class Auto Body on 94th Avenue. The business was closed at

the time and no one was injured in the fire. “The initial investigation reveals that a male walked to the rear of the business setting it and a truck on fire,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks in a media release. “The male suspect then walked away from the area. A short time later a vehicle was seen leaving the general area and it is believed it is associated to

the incident.” Police are asking for the public’s assistance to identify the owner of the vehicle that was seen leaving the area with two occupants inside it. The male suspect was wearing blue jeans, a dark jacket and gray hoodie at the time of the incident. The vehicle police are seeking is a green Volkswagen hatchback with a single roof rack. The car was missing a hubcap

on the right front passenger side. Police believe there were two occupants in the vehicle and one or both might have information that could assist in the investigation. No descriptions of the vehicle occupants has been provided to police. Anyone with information is asked to call Delta police at 946-4411 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800222-8477.

Police arrest identity theft suspect at bank South Delta Crime Beat

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for inprogress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:

TSAWWASSEN • April 4, 1 a.m., 4555 Clarence Taylor Crescent: Complainant reported they had received an

Instagram informing them they had won $10,000 and to send funds to an account in Jamaica in order to receive the winnings. The complainant sent $900 in five separate transactions before they discovered they were the victim of fraud. • April 6, 6:02 p.m., 1100-block of 56th Street: A suspect attended a financial institution and attempted to secure a line of credit using another person’s identification. Police arrested the suspect for attempted fraud and they were released on a promise to appear in court at a future date. • April 7, 8:05 a.m., 4900-block of Willow Springs Avenue: Police attended the area to investigate a theft following a complaint that the com-

munity mailbox had been pried open. Investigation found the boxes were not broken into but were under repair by Canada Post and residents had received an email advising them of the repair. Police requested another email be sent to residents in order to prevent further complaints. • April 7, 1:30 p.m., 900-block of 51A Street: Complainant reported their vehicle parked in the driveway was broken into sometime overnight. Items stolen include two passports, Nexus cards and small change. As there was no damage to the vehicle and the alarm not activated, the complainant feels they might have left the vehicle unlocked. • April 8, 6:09 a.m., 1100-block of 54A Street:

Police responded to a report of break and entry in progress. The complainant heard a crashing sound at the front door and observed a male fleeing from the building in a gray sports car. The licence plate appeared incorrect as it was terminated in 1990. Police investigation found the front door of the building had been pried open but no access had been gained to the mailboxes. • April 9, 7:49 p.m., 1600-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported their daughter’s Michael Kors wallet had been stolen from their vehicle. ell, that didn’t take long. The provincial election campaign just got underway earlier this week but already the goodies are flying around as the two main parties attempt to buy — I mean woo — voters in the run up to May 9. Rather than big picture pronouncements on issues like LNG production or environmental protections, the early days of the campaign have focused on the little guy, or more specifically, the little guy’s wallet. I can’t remember a campaign where so many everyday expenses have become such prominent planks of party platforms. Both parties have pledged to ease the burden on commuters, with Premier Christy Clark’s promise to cap bridge tolls at $500 one-upped by NDP Leader John Horgan’s call to do away with them entirely. Regardless of who wins, it’s good news for those in the Fraser Valley who travel across the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges, although I’m not so sure it’s quite as rosy for the average taxpayer given that money will have to come from somewhere else. Presuming one of the two tolling scenarios is put in place post-election, that policy would also have to apply to the bridge slated to replace the George Massey Tunnel, which would be good for commuters around here. Mind you, whatever is put in place would not only have to survive the upcoming four-year term but also the 2021 election, so best not to count your savings just yet. But even if you can’t take advantage of toll-friendly crossings, there’s bound to be something in those bags of tricks that will make your wallet a little fatter. What about a freeze on B.C. Hydro rates or on personal income taxes? Maybe it’s $10 a day childcare, a $15 minimum wage, a renter’s credit or the elimination of MSP premiums. If it all sounds too good to be true, then I’m afraid it just might be. That’s not to say the winning party won’t make good on its promises, but I have a sneaky suspicion that whatever the right hand ends up giving us after May 9, the left hand could well take away. A tax or fee might be reduced or disappear entirely, but I have a difficult time believing it won’t be offset by another cost we’ll be forced to absorb. That discussion is for another time because for the next 25 days, it will be nothing but good news.

Agricultural bond is building

D

elta’s agricultural advisory committee meets every three months and is tasked with updating mayor and council on issues relating to farming and agriculture in our communities. The committee is comprised of farmers, ministry officials, two Delta councillors and representatives from various stakeholder groups, including the Delta Farmers’ Institute and the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust. They know what the issues are around here. Committee members have insight into the many complexities of farming and land use that most citizens don’t, and they have received detailed presentations from Port Vancouver officials, the Ministry of Transportation, Delta engineering staff, Century Group, MK Delta Lands, Shato Holdings and other groups that have interests within our midst. As we all know, there is no clear path to bliss in Delta. In our last meeting of 2016, I was asked to give an update to the committee regarding the progress of the Delta School District’s educational initiatives within the Farm Roots and Project Pickle programs. The update was well received and in preparation for the next meeting, it was suggested by committee chair Ian Paton that we include a tour of the Farm Roots facility for our next meeting. That suggestion was fine-tuned somewhat and we decided to tour

Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER

the school and have our meeting on site as opposed to having our meeting at municipal hall as per usual. Delta has an agricultural plan, and it is full of suggestions and recommendations to assist our farming community in dealing with issues relating to climate change, irrigation, pressures on farmland, migratory birds, set asides and a whole host of complexities that require careful consideration. The plan also recognizes the importance of education for the future of farming in Delta and this importance is referenced several times in the plan, including this item: “15. Enhance relationships with Delta farmers, secondary and post-secondary education institutions, agricultural academies, ministries and associations to facilitate events and initiatives to provide new/young farmers with training, mentoring, technical expertise, production knowledge,

and access to agricultural programs that would promote knowledge transfer and build capacity in smaller scale farming.” Item 15 is clearly being followed up on in our community and we should be thankful for that. The Delta School District is working toward building a robust inquiry-based learning environment that dovetails nicely with the Ministry of Education’s new curriculum. Farm Roots instructors Graham Harkley and Tammy Veltcamp tasked their students with putting together a presentation for the committee to outline their accomplishments, challenges, goals for the future and observations of the curriculum thus far. After the presentation, committee members explained to the students what they did in the community and some of the students told us why they chose to participate in a new but long overdue educational idea. There was a question and answer session at the end of the presentation. There is a bond building in our community. The meeting last Tuesday will not be a one-off. Relationship building amongst farmers, students and governments will continue right here in our backyard. Bring it! Find hope and resilience for your life.

Change purchasing model to help buyers beat the down payment

Editor: In this country it’s virtually impossible to buy a house without a substantial down payment. The reason, of course, is everyone involved in such a transaction should share some of the so-called risk. This model worked more or less fairly well over several decades but no more. With housing prices through the roof so to speak, the average house buyer, meaning 95 per cent of the population, is now out of the house buying market. They simply don’t earn enough money, nor are they ever able to come up with the

$200,000 to $500,000 for such a down payment. Solution: Let’s change the purchasing model. Many families are paying $2,000 to $4,000 per month for rental accommodation. Those same payments would easily service a $500,000 to $1 million mortgage but that annoying down payment is the one hump most are unable to hurdle. Why not let buyers purchase houses on their financial ability to service the debt? To raise the comfort level of the banks, the federal and provincial governments could set up a system to support the

non-down payments by guaranteeing that a portion of the monies servicing the mortgage could be applied to an agreed upon quasi down payment amount that would be given to the financial institution until the required down payment was recouped. The banks have no risk as the governments would guarantee such payments. Would it work? Absolutely. People need shelter and must pay for it. Under this scenario, a buyer would get the house they want, the banks would get their down payment spread

over a few years and most people could buy the house of their so-called dreams. The governments and banks would hold the first rights to any monies until the down payment was recouped from the purchaser. Then the banks only would hold the paper as the governments drop off and the home buyer would build up real equity but over a longer period of time. Everyone wins. The alternative is families raising children in small high-rise apartments. Not exactly good for the economy. Barrie McDonald

Hoss Hoss is looking for a special person to make his dreams come true! Hoss hasn’t had the happiest beginning, and was not treated well in his past. We’re hoping to find him his perfect family who will give him his deserved happy ending. Hoss is a two year old male Poodle/Lhasa Apso mix. He weighs around 29 lbs. Ideally Hoss would love to meet a single woman who is looking for a devoted, fuzzy companion. He warms up to women quickly, but he may do well with a patient and calm male who will take the time to earn his trust. Hoss is perfectly crate trained and housebroken and walks well on leash. He gets along well with other calm dogs that have manners and don’t get in his face, but as with people, when scared, he gets defensive. Hoss loves snuggling, belly rubs and playing with his favorite toys. Out on walks he’s a big explorer, and he’s always smiling. As with all of our dogs, he is neutered and up to date on all shots and vaccines. Someone who has the time and patience to work with his fear and gain his trust and show him that all people aren’t bad is exactly who this little man needs! For more information, please email us at pbandchi@gmail.com or call Pets-N-Us at 604-943-0908.

Nominal tolls on all crossings is the answer purchase the “SunPass” for driving the Florida roadways. We were informed that if we aren’t familiar with the tolled highways, it could become an expensive trip due to tolled sections. That state is actually cashing in on tourism to pay its highway improvements by charging a tax for tolls to visitors renting automobiles if they choose to do so for worry-free sightseeing. As Greater

Vancouverites, I think it would be reasonable to charge motorists as little as 25 cents to pass through tunnels or cross over bridges, and direct these fees to build bridges and improve highways. This would get us on the right track to creating a more efficient Lower Mainland road system and at the same time use the Golden Ears and Port Mann bridges to their full capacity. Norm Janssen

Suggestion shows disrespect for Southlands process Editor: Re: Compensation can’t be counted twice, April 12 It’s shocking to read that certain Delta councillors are even seriously considering a recommendation to use Southlands ALR land to compensate the MK Delta Lands develop-

ment application adjacent to Burns Bog. Considering all the extensive time, money and anxiety that went into the lengthy Southlands public hearing process, one has to question if councillors are now disrespecting the Southlands public hearing process and its decisions.

This recommendation, if acted on, might even be unethical and potentially encourage a thorough investigation by the B.C. ombudsman. Isn’t it also laughable and even hypocritical to try to use Delta farmland like chess pieces on a chess board while trying

to rob Peter to pay Paul? When councillors speak on and on about what’s “farmable” and “not farmable” land, I guess they should be reminded that for years and years the community was told Southlands was inferior, unfarmable land. B. Yaworski

Editor: After watching the news and political advertisements, I can’t help but write in to express my thoughts on what would be, in my opinion, an easy solution to our Lower Mainland infrastructure. I have said this for a while now, but an easy way to collect tax dollars to improve our streets, highways and bridges would be to charge a fee on all tunnels and bridges as soon as possible.

Banquetraises$100,000 for Reach’s new centre

Last Saturday night’s Reach for the Stars Gala reached the six-figure mark for the third year in a row. Held at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn, the fifth annual banquet once again raised money for Reach’s Building for Children Together campaign, which is financing a new child development centre in the heart of Ladner. “The positive energy radiating from the 270 guests and volunteers who came together in support of Reach on Saturday evening was overwhelming and filled my heart

with immense warmth and pride at being a part of such an amazing organization,” said Reach fundraising manager Kristin Bibbs. “It was truly an incredible demonstration of how deeply Reach is valued within our community.” May Days Choir youth, including members with autism, received a standing ovation for their performance of Fight Song. Local resident and 104.3FM radio host Kelly Latremouille emceed the event while Coun. Ian Paton acted as auctioneer. With the support of presenting sponsors Vancouver Fraser Port

Authority and Canadian Autoparts Toyota (CAPTIN), as well as other sponsors, raffles, auction donors and guests, the gala raised $100,000 for children and youth with special needs. TFN Chief Bryce Williams gave a traditional welcome and Delta MP Carla Qualtrough sent a congratulatory message that was read at the beginning of the evening. Qualtrough praised the Building for Children Together initiative, stating, “The new Lois E. Jackson Kinsmen Centre for Children will be a tremendous benefit not only

It is finished

Today is Good Friday, commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus. One of the last things Jesus said on the cross before he died was, “It is finished.” Was this a sort of Captain Obvious statement of the... well, obvious fact that his time had run out? Or a dramatic way of saying goodbye? Or an anguished admission of failure? Or was it much, much more? This phrase is a translation of a single Greek word, “Tetelestai.” Papyri from that era have been discovered that show this word was commonly written at the bottom of sales receipts, tax bills or deeds, stating the debt had been paid in full. Jesus wasn’t referring to his imminent death,

ten: “5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:5–6, NIV). Jesus died to pay the penalty for everything you and I have done, said, thought or failed to do that doesn’t measure up to God’s perfect standard. inger/songwriter Colin Wiebe and the Legends All Star Band will be performing the hits of legendary Canadian band The Guess Who at Genesis Theatre in Ladner next weekend. “It’s really a celebration of the music,” says Wiebe, who points out the show, titled American Woman, isn’t a tribute act. The Ladner resident notes he’ll also tell a few stories during the concert. Wiebe says he spent 17 years playing with former The Guess Who member Randy Bachman and got to play with other members of the band on one of his own albums, which was produced by Bachman. Wiebe says he also toured briefly with The Guess Who while subbing in on lead singing duties. Wiebe’s website says he joined The Randy Bachman Band in 1991. “It was a thrill for me to play with the guy who was instrumental in cowriting a good majority of these songs, not to mention the Bachman-Turner Overdrive hits as well,” he says. The Guess Who was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1987. The group produced many hits, including U.S. chart-topper American Woman. “The Guess Who has a special place in

Ladner Elders project explores local history DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

An exhibit of photos and writing that explores the history of Ladner is on display this month at the Ladner Pioneer Library. The idea behind the Ladner Elders project was to talk about what the community was like in the past and what it was like living in the area, explains photographer Sharon Wright. “We learnt so much,” she says. The project includes 13

black and white portrait photos of local seniors, each with a bio done up by local writer Anne Sanders. Wright photographed the seniors while Sanders interviewed them about their lives and recollections of the past. Sanders says it was an interesting project to work on and that she had “so much admiration” for the seniors who took part. A total of 15 seniors were involved (one of the photos includes a husband and wife while another includes a sister and

brother). They had to be over 75 and have lived in Ladner for a minimum of 50 years to take part in the project. Wright is a professional photographer while Sanders has worked in radio and as a freelance writer. They both live in Ladner.

When our suitcases come out of the closet, our Schnauzer, Kalli, goes into panic mode. She neurotically shakes, scurries and gives us the occasional whimper. There’s no need for conversation. Her pleading brown eyes clearly relay her thoughts: “Do I get to come along or are you leaving me behind?” As we transfer our travelling possessions from the house to RV, she has the answer. And she’s the first one in the driver’s seat. Over the next few days, while we’re nestled into the grove of pines at Lake Okanagan Provincial Park, our girl enjoys sniffing out scents, pawing a few paths and cuddling with us by the campfire. But before hitting the open road, there are a few things we need to consider and pack for our fur baby. Rules and regs — Prior to booking any campsite, we do an etiquette pet check. Is there a size or

breed restriction or a limit to how many four-legged companions can tag along per party? Does the campground have a dog park where she can run freely? Nix the ticks — These parasitic arthropods that hide out in the Okanagan’s wooded areas would love to pounce on our precious pup. And they’d stay latched into her skin folds, around her ears or inside her legs until they’ve finished their blood meal. Prevention is the best protection for tick trouble. Before preparing for departure, we pick up some anti-tick remedy and give her a dose. Pet Essentials — Dog dishes and food, leash and harness, treats and toys, poop bags and immunization papers. And while en route: a good water supply and her favourite lambskin blanket. Lake Okanagan Campground, located between Peachland and Summerland, is rimmed by a swim-safe beach and canopied by lush deciduous trees. It’s divided into

an awesome lake view. My husband and I could easily chill out and relax for the entire stay but our pup would rather plod and play. And there are lots of local trails where we can appease her canine spirit. The two campgrounds are linked by a kilometre-long lakeshore path and as we saunter this strip together, she sniffs the scents of regional wildflowers and scurrying chipmunks. The nearby city of Summerland also offers a plethora of dog-friendly walks. And on this remaining section of preserved track, the Kettle Valley Steam Railway, a 1912 fully-restored locomotive, shares the scenic sites of today with rail travel from a bygone era. Although we have to bypass this tourist attraction due to our four-legged tag-along, Kalli seems quite content to replace it with a little campground bliss. Performers return to nature reserve for society’s annual Earth Day Pilgrimage

The Burns Bog Conservation Society is hosting its 10th annual Earth Day Pilgrimage to Burns Bog next weekend. Set for Sunday, April 23, the event is close to the heart of the society as well as returning performers Susan Summers and the Sacred Web Singers. The Earth Day Pilgrimage is an enjoyable

way for people to discover the importance of Burns Bog, the largest undeveloped urban wilderness in North America. “(The Sacred Web Singers) care about and participate in causes that involve the environment and people. We like to share our music with those who care for our earth,” says Summers.

Aline LaFlamme and the Daughters of the Drum will also return to perform this year. “[Burns Bog] is a cleansing and healing filter that enhances the health of all of us,” says Laflamme. “This is why I want to be at the pilgrimage each year, rain or shine.” The goal of the pilgrimage is to raise awareness

for Burns Bog as an important peatland, and to educate people about the spiritually enriching elements of local natural spaces. The spiritual walk through the Delta Nature Reserve features a variety of entertainment, while enjoying the beauty and serenity of the natural setting. The event runs from 2 to

NEW: DETOX MICROGREENS COLLECTION 4 STEP NIGHTLY DETOX RITUAL WITH EMINENCE ORGANICS

Mother’s Day May 14th

Is your skin looking less than lively? It may be time to add a detox to your nightly routine. Every day, we are confronted with airborne particles that stress our complexions. At Spa Time, we believe in feeding your skin from the inside out (with a healthy lifestyle) as well as from the outside in (with products that are infused with nutrient- and vitamin-rich ingredients). Here’s our 4 step nightly detox ritual to give your skin the healthy boost it’s craving. 1. SIP MINT + LEMON WATER Hydration is key to helping your body fight the negative effects of pollution. The best way to flush out toxins is simple: “lots and lots of water”. For a calming bedtime beverage, add a squeeze of lemon and a sprig of mint to a cup of hot water. Lemon juice helps to “cleanse and alkalize the body”, while mint aids in digestion to prep you for a soothing slumber. 2. REMOVE YOUR MAKEUP & DEEP CLEAN YOUR PORES Start your nightly skin care routine with a double cleanse to gently remove makeup and sweep away impurities that have accumulated throughout the day. Lift away stubborn makeup with the gentle Eminence Organics Stone Crop Cleansing Oil, then wash off the dirt, dead skin and grime that have collected on your skin’s surface with your favorite Eminence Organics cleanser. For an even deeper clean, de-gunk clogged pores with Eminence Organics Stone Crop Oxygenating Fizzofoliant™. 3. PROTECT YOUR SKIN WHILE YOU SLEEP Your skin doesn’t go to sleep when your head hits the pillow - in fact, the best time for your skin to repair and regenerate is while you’re sleeping. Before tucking in, give your skin an added dose of protection with Eminence Organics Lotus Detoxifying Overnight Treatment. This lightweight gel cream prevents water loss, supercharges the skin and defends against drying environmental stressors, revealing a perfectly dewy complexion by morning. 4. TURN OFF YOUR DEVICES Consider implementing a digital detox to give your brain some downtime before bed. Instead of reaching for your phone and endlessly scrolling until you doze off, close your eyes and follow one of these easy meditations to lull yourself into a deeply restful sleep. Tigers motivated to repeat Delta Bantam AAA baseball team off to a strong start with 6-1-1 record IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

After winning their first provincial title last season, the Delta Tigers are certainly not sitting back enjoying their championship reign. The club has come out of the gates strong, posting a 6-1-1 overall record, including 2-0 in league play, as it looks to repeat as B.C. Baseball Association Bantam AAA champions. “I think we have a good mix of really strong second-year players and first-year players that have shown a lot of potential,” said Tigers head coach and manager Cam Frick. “In the past I have only taken two or three firstyear players on the team, but this year we have six guys who really earned their spot and it’s exciting to see such a strong group with so many first years not only for this year, but for the future.” Last year’s squad featured 12 returning players and only two first-year players. Those two firstyear players have returned and have been named team captains. Braedy Euerby is the club’s top pitcher and shortstop, while Sean Heppner is the starting catcher. “Last year both of them as first-year players were very committed, had a great work ethic, so that’s why they were chosen for the team last year and why they were named captains this year,” Frick said. “Their leadership and work ethic has really resonated throughout the team.” Frick said one of the reasons the Bantam AAA program remains strong is a solid feeder system with the Bantam AA and Peewee programs. “This past fall, my off-season priority was involving as many players

Delta Tigers starting pitcher Declan Forbes was in action Sunday at Winskill Park against Vancouver. The Tigers won 3-1 in extra innings. into the Tigers program as possible,” he said. “We had both a Bantam and Peewee fall team and the goal of that is to get those players involved, show them what the program is like and make sure they are not looking to go elsewhere to play in the future. A lot of our B.C. Minor teams are losing players to the prep league, but that was not an issue for us at all.” Success on the field also helps with attracting top talent, but Frick said there are other factors at play. “Talking to parents, the big thing for them is our young coaching staff. All of us are in our 20s and

it’s different for these kids because for most of them it has been their dads coaching them,” Frick said. “There is nothing wrong with having parent coaches, but I remember my first time not having a parent coach was my first year playing Bantam AAA in North Delta and it’s different, but I loved it. It was a great experience for me. Sometimes having that parent coaching there can be issues like favouring playing time, even if they don’t mean to do it. Having an unbiased approach is ideal.” Despite the club’s strong start record wise, it might have been better had the

weather gods been smiling a bit more. The Tigers have had 10 rainouts already, including last weekend when rain washed out a tournament in Whalley. Delta managed to host an exhibition game Sunday against Vancouver, picking up a 3-1 extra inning victory. “I think we have a deep pitching staff. Five or six guys, even at this early time in the year, that I can trust to throw out there in any situation,” said Frick. “Our offence, I was a little worried about, but so far we’ve showed some promise for sure. We’re hitting the ball hard and

driving it to all parts of the field against some strong pitching. “Obviously with the weather it has not been ideal at this point in the season. Early on I would like to be practicing three to four times a week by the early part of March, but it’s turned into one or two times with this weather, but everyone is dealing with the same things. Despite all that, I’m happy with our start and just looking to build as the season continues.” Delta hosts Kelowna on Saturday in its second league double-header with games at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at Cromie Park in Ladner.

Ladner’s Paxton shines in M’s home opener

WE ARE WORKING IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD! Need Anything Done or Repaired?

IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Ladner’s James Paxton has been one of the few bright spots in a tough start to the season for the Seattle Mariners. The left-hander was dominant Monday afternoon, pitching seven innings of shutout ball leading the M’s to a 6-0 win over the Houston Astros in the home opener at Safeco Field. It was only the second win of the season for Seattle. Paxton was strong in his first outing of the year on April 5 when he pitched six scoreless innings only to see the Mariners lose 5-3 in extra innings to the Astros. So far in his two starts, Paxton has pitched 13 innings, allowing no runs on six hits with 13 strikeouts and three walks. He is now the second Mariners pitcher in club history to begin the season with consecutive starts of six-plus scoreless innings.

OUR TESTIMONIALS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES! I would recommend Fraser Elliott to my friends and family. As a single parent I am so busy and I wasn't looking forward to listing my house but the Fraser Elliott team efficiency and knowledge made it a great experience.

When we called Fraser Elliott it was only a matter of hours that he and Garrett, his teammate, were at our door to view the property and to set an asking price. They were very efficient and helpful. They sold our home within a week and we were amazed at their expertise and handling of the sale. Thank you so much Fraser's team for all your hard work. Well done!

- Norma

- j&h

First of all thank you so very very much for the lovely basket! That was so so nice! Mike & I want to let everyone at the Fraser Elliott Group know how impressed we were- and how thankful we are that we hired you to sell our home. I honestly can say with the exception of selling the home we loved- the experience was unbelievably painless. It took us a couple of months to decide we were going to list. Garrett came and met with us, then we called you back a month later. Fraser came to meet with us- we still weren't sure! Garrett & Fraser did not push. Then we called again and they both came! They spent hours with us- answering our questions, and offering tips. They were so so patient. We finally signed on the dotted line. Garrett & Fraser suggested a listing price of over $300,000 compared to other Realtors速. They said if we were patient, they thought we could get that price or close to it! They said they could price the house to sell in a day or two-but felt we would leave money on the table. When we decided on a list price, they also warned us there would likely not be bidding wars at that price point, nor would we sell in a day. Everything they told us- came true. I was a little nervous the house wouldn't sell because they didn't do open houses. Not having open houses was wonderful! We got a few people looking each week- apparently if they are serious buyers- that is all we need. The market was slowing down when we finally decided to list, so I have to admit there were a few times I was nervous. I didn't need to be. The entire process was a well-oiled machine. They seem to be one happy efficient unit- working together for the client. A big shout out to Julie, Rachel, Garrett & Fraser and a side shout to Amber 'aka pitbull' for closing the deal and not taking any flack! Now we are looking for our next place. Poor Jennifer! She has been especially patient, responsive and fun to go see places with. She is extremely knowledgeable- and we feel like she really wants us to buy a place we can be happy in! She doesn't just want to close any deal. So Jennifer thank you! I so appreciate all the tips and endless stream of knowledge you seem to have. Hopefully soon, you can sell us a home! Thank you all again so much. Mike & I really were thrilled with your group! - Sincerely, Sharon Donald After selling my house, trying to decide what would come next could have been a very hard thing to do. I called Jennifer, and that made all the difference. She was invested in me as a person, stayed in contact, listened attentively, and was just what I needed; a trusted opinion who had thorough knowledge in a market I was unsure of. With her guidance and ability to focus on what I needed (and after viewing many properties, thank you, Jen!), I know I made a decision I can be proud of, and I couldn't have done it without her, or the Fraser Elliott Team. My new home is absolutely perfect for me. - Cory The decision to sell our home and relocate was one of the hardest we've ever made. The decision to use Fraser Elliott's team made it all worth it! Not only were we able to ask more than we thought possible but we were offered over our asking price, and accepted. The level of professionalism from the initial meeting with Fraser, to the staging, photography, and showings, was incredible. We were kept in the loop with each step and never felt that anything was beyond our control. With this being our first home we were new to the whole process of selling and the entire team made us feel at ease. We owe so much to Fraser, Garrett, Amber, Julie, Rachel and Jennifer. We are forever grateful and would recommend their services to anyone looking to buy or sell in beautiful South Delta! - Ryan and Danyelle Loyer

I chose the Fraser Elliott Group to make the sale of my North Delta apartment happen and it did! I personally was confident that I had made a good choice. All the team were respectful and made me feel that my ideas and opinion were valued. Communication was pleasantly and skillfully done by Phil. The end result for the times was good and I would certainly consult them if ever needed. - Lois To the Fraser Elliott Team, I'd like to thank you for a job well done selling my house. Your team is very professional and competent. No matter what questions I had, you people got back to me immediately with the answers and confirmed by other members of your team. You were always easy to reach, and your expertise and knowledge was very much appreciated. I would highly recommend your team to anyone needing a Realtor. PS. The free moving van was a surprise and really helped, Thank You. - Ralph Rasmussen Fraser Elliott is a step up from other firms with whom I've listed. They delivered on marketing with professional photos and targeted Facebook marketing. They sold my commercial strata office unit in a matter of weeks, and for a very satisfactory price. Additionally they work as a team, not individual Realtors, and this ensures everything keeps moving. I would certainly recommend their services. - Levi

THANKS TO ALL OUR CUSTOMERS!

- Kari Our family wanted to let you know how excited we are the house is sold. Steve and I wanted to thank each of you from the start with meeting Garrett as well as the stager and photographer getting house ready. First phone call from Amber for showing. Thanks Rachel and Julie for the many showings. Thanks Jen for the many phone calls and working really hard, even late at night and getting offer completed, which Garrett was part of too. Fraser, you and your team really care and will be well recommended from us!

I'd like to say we developed a great relationship with Fraser's team while we went through the sales process, but the truth is we didn't have time. It was a week from signing up with the team to signing the sale documents! What more can we say? A professional team that executes on their promise like a well oiled machine! They make magic. Bench strength we never imagined. No wonder they are award winning! Not using them would really be your loss. Choosing Fraser's team was the best decision we could have made.Thank you Fraser, Garrett, Julie, Amber, Rachel, James the photographer, and Kashmir the stager. You far exceeded our expectations. We're sold!! - Ray and Joanne M

Garrett gave an appraisal for my home and I considered other realtors, but Garrett's straightforward approach and no pressure attitude led me to list with him. I had reservations about selling during the winter especially after the major snowstorms we have experienced. They sent out a photographer who had to wade in a foot of snow to photograph the outside and despite the weather, the realtor's open house still took place shortly after. It was a roller coaster ride of negotiations which Garrett and Jennifer navigated with great skill and professionalism. The end result was the house was sold in a week. Overall, it was a great experience with the Fraser Elliott Real Estate Group. Well done. I would definitely recommend the Fraser Elliott Group to others.

The Fraser Elliott Team, l'd like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to you and your entire staff on what l consider to be an outstanding job on the sale of my condo. From our first meeting you told me that you would treat the sale of my condo the same way you would handle selling a $3 million home. You and your team stood by your word and did exactly that. I couldn't be happier! With the extremely tight window time you and your team was working with you made it all fit together. An outstanding performance by you all and my thanks and gratitude for all your hard work. I feel privileged to have met and worked together with such a congenial group as yourselves and will pass my positive recommendations on the appropriate people. Thanks again for the outstanding effort you all put in for me. Sincerely,

- Don W

Our experience working with the Fraser Elliott group was excellent. We were very happy with all aspects of the service provided - sales agent, photographer and staging advice. Everything we needed was done in a very efficient manner and we were always kept in the loop about what was happening. Phil was a great sales agent. He was always on time, always answered my questions and was professional and honest. He was always upbeat and positive as well as thoughtful and understanding. As a busy mom with three little kids at home, Phil always took my concerns seriously and worked to accommodate our needs. I was very happy with our experience and I recommend Fraser Elliott Group to friends and family in the future! - Sara Raouf Thank you to the Fraser Elliott group for selling our townhouse. We were really impressed with our initial meeting with Garrett, with the staging consultation and with the professional photographs taken of our townhouse. A great big thank you to Julie, Rachel, Jennifer and Amber. They worked really hard on all of our showings and promptly got back to us to let us know the outcome after each one. We would highly recommend the Fraser Elliott group to anyone looking to sell their home - Bryant and Heather

I highly recommend the Fraser Elliott team . They are very professional and keep you posted continually . They did an amazing job to get us the best price possible for our house including providing a stager. - Linda Nash We couldn't be happier with the experience we had selling our house with Fraser Elliott group! Everything was done in an efficient way, from the staging, professional photos, showings and negotiations. Philip did a great job selling the place and Garrett was able to negotiate the deal we wanted. All in two weeks! If we ever need to sell again we know where to go! - Liselott and Mike McFarlane

SHARPE, Norma Ann Mary (nee Page) Bev - Forever in our hearts We miss you each and every day Love your family and friends April 18, 2007

JOANNE HERENDY March 9, 1964 April 14, 2011

I can’t believe it has been six years since your passing. I mourn your death everyday. You were my only Sister. Now that our Mother has passed, the pain is that much deeper. You were taken from us. “Evil” is alive and well. I miss you so much Joanne. Love Kim

OBITUARIES

April 16, 1935 - March 25, 2017

Norma passed away peacefully in the early morning hours at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. She is remembered with deep love and affection by her husband of 60 years, William Stephen (‘Steve’) Sharpe, her children Greg (Janice), David (Debie), Stephanie (Harvey) and Jennifer (Stevan), grandchildren, Joshua (Aleksandra), Olivia (Jordan), Evan, Breanne (Joel), Ole (Sara), and Larissa. Norma is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Luca, Bodhi, Ruby, Gemma and Milo. Each of us has our own ‘most memorable’ moments of Norma; we will stir them up often with great fondness. Norma and Steve shared nearly 61 years together happily raising a family of four children. Norma and Steve read together, enjoyed music together, prayed, worshipped and played together, serving those in their neighborhood, fellowship groups and churches selflessly and joyfully. Norma’s life revolved around teaching and serving, first her family and then those within her reach. She parented and grand-parented with warmth, affection, and sagacity; others watched and listened for Norma’s parenting wisdom and strategies. Norma had a deep appreciation for classical music and sacred music in particular. She was a friend and mentor to many in choirs with whom she shared her faith and love for worship. There were many years of mid-week rehearsals, Sunday morning worship services, and summers at the Naramata Center where she sang and directed adult or children’s choirs. Her service to, and love for, the people with whom she sang was greatly appreciated; she had a profound impact on the spiritual lives of many. She will be missed by countless singers with whom she sang and for whom she provided direction and leadership. Norma was a teacher and loved teaching. Norma will be fondly remembered by her many teaching colleagues, the children, and parents she so lovingly and carefully served at the Delta School Readiness Program. She taught children with unique learning needs for many years at this school during which she also provided mentorship in the evenings and weekends to young parents to equipping them for the responsibilities of parenting.

The family would like to offer our thanks to the staff at Carrington Residences in Mission, B.C., for their care and support of Norma before she was hospitalized.
