Stair climber to have company for fundraiser at Gingell Park PHOTO BY GORD GOBLE

Dave Lemire (right) will have a lot of company when he undertakes Climb for Kids 3 next weekend at Fred Gingell Park in Tsawwassen. In the previous two fundraisers for B.C. Children’s Hospital, Lemire tackled the stairs down to Tsawwassen Beach on his own, but this time around the event will feature a team of 12 taking turns over a 24-hour period. The fundraiser will also feature a barbecue next Saturday afternoon and a pancake breakfast the following morning. For more on Climb for Kids 3, see story on Page 7.

DTA president Paul Steer says when public education fails to thrive, children attending schools in Delta also fail to thrive.

Parents of kids with special needs urged the Delta board of education to find some other way to balance the budget. Trustees held a public input session Tuesday on the district’s draft budget that projects a $2 million deficit. To help make up for the shortfall, the district is proposing to cut the number of special education assistants from 324 to 296. Secretary-treasurer Joe Strain

last week explained the reason behind the reduction is that the number of special needs students is projected to decrease for the first time in several years. Those students bring additional funding from the province so the decline will mean a reduction of over $1 million in funding. That explanation wasn’t good enough for Andrea Drake, who made a tearful plea to the board to make reductions elsewhere, saying overly strict guidelines on special needs designations mean many who need the extra sup-

port already aren’t getting it. “Every child has the right to learn and for accommodations to their unique learning style. It is devastatingly unfortunate that of the huge amount of students who will actually require additional support in the classroom, very few will qualify for that support under the current guidelines for tagging and designations that supply funding from the government, which then in turn supports EA support hours,” she said. Candidates gather at library News and Views group talks issues with those vying to become next MLA SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Three of the five provincial election candidates in Delta South made their pitch at a meeting of the Tsawwassen News and Views group Tuesday morning. Liberal Ian Paton, independent Nicholas Wong and Green Larry Colero talked about their platforms to around 30 members at the Tsawwassen Library, answering questions on a range of topics, including some previously covered at recent forums. On the question of health care and the role of Delta Hospital, Paton, reminding the group of his family’s long connection with the facility, was enthusiastic about the hospital today, saying it’s doing well with longer operating hours, a cast clinic, arrival of an orthopedic surgeon from Nova Scotia and other additions. Colero talked about his party’s belief in focusing on disease prevention but also noted Delta Hospital needs full acute care. He said it’s difficult to look at just one aspect of health care in isolation of many other factors. “My concern is if the government gets too used

Independent Nicholas Wong (right), Liberal Ian Paton (middle) and Green Larry Colero talked about everything from Delta Hospital to a new bridge while visiting with the Tsawwassen News and Views group Tuesday morning. to having private donors fund all of our health care services, they’re really abdicating responsibility. I think we have to be clear that private donors can fund enhancements but not fundamental services,” he said.

Saying Delta needs a fully restored and functioning hospital, Wong spoke of the need to expand alternative levels of care. All three agreed that it would be a great benefit to utilize nurse practitioners.

When it comes to the new bridge and capping tolls, Colero said it would be fundamentally unfair to have a cap, while much of the $4 billion that will be spent on the bridge could be used to improve transit. Wong agreed that a

solution was needed for the corridor but the public hasn’t been given the opportunity for a reasonably informed decision. He also described the Liberal promise to cap tolls as a “bit of a lark.” Saying the bridge has been determined as the best solution, Paton described those pushing for a twinning of the current tunnel as “arm chair environmentalists.” He also noted people in Western Canada aren’t used to the concept of tolls even though they’re in place elsewhere. He added he’ll also fight for light rapid transit to cross the new bridge into Delta. All three cited their volunteer experiences when asked how they made a personal difference in the community. Bruce Reid with the NDP and Errol Sherley with the BC Action Party are also running in Delta South but weren’t at Tuesday’s session. The Council of Canadians hosted a forum last night while Friends of Delta Hospital has one scheduled for tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Tsawwassen United Church. The provincial election takes place May 9.

Parents tell board that student supports still required

CONTINUED from Page 1 Drake, whose son is in kindergarten, said her son’s designation means he isn’t guaranteed the same level of support as kids with other designations. “The projected special needs student numbers reportedly going down next year does not mean the need for support for all the other students is going down,” she said. Wondering why there’s

no flexibility in the budget, and how the board is coming up with its estimates, Samantha Palomino said what trustees are doing is discriminatory. Melisa Kluey said her child is about to enter high school but it’s now uncertain what kind of support will be provided. Carole Johnson, an education assistant at English Bluff Elementary in Tsawwassen, told the board EAs are in short

supply in cities like Vancouver and Richmond, to the point they are in crisis, so it’s odd Delta believes it has an abundance of them. She said parents of kids with special needs are forced to advocate tooth and nail. Noting her son is thriving thanks to EA support, Carlie Crocker said there are likely children about to enter the Delta school system that need support but not yet identified because

they aren’t attending preschool. Delta Teachers Association president Paul Steer said many teachers feel as if they have been trying to prop up a threelegged stool. “Why does it continue to be necessary to reduce educational assistants — people who actually work very closely with students — instead of other areas within the administrative structure of the system?”

he asked. “Why does the district continue to pursue net revenue increases from less secure international education and Continuing Education instead of effectively lobbying to see these soft revenue streams replaced by more stable public monies derived from progressive taxation?” The board will vote on the budget at its meeting next Tuesday.

For a Strong, Experienced Leader, Vote Ian Paton As past Fire Chief in Delta, I have had the pleasure of working with Ian Paton on many occasions. One that comes front and centre is recently working with both Doctors and the Health Ministry, Ian was a key player in getting a meeting together with the Minister of Health that resulted in enhancing operating opportunities within our Delta Hospital. I have known Ian since we were in high school. He is a tireless community servant and I know he will take his passion to Victoria in representing Delta South as our MLA. - Gord Freeborn, Retired Fire Chief for Delta My name is Mike Guichon and I am a third generation farmer who has known and done business with Ian and his dad before him. I am proud to vouch for Ian's integrity and honesty and his dedication to Delta and agriculture. I know him to be a knowledgeable and capable Delta Councillor and to have the potential to elevate these qualities and talents to the Provincial level. I whole heartily endorse Ian Paton to be South Delta's Member of the Legislative Assembly. - Mike Guichon, Ladner Farmer During Ian’s time on Council, I’ve seen him take action to strengthen the foundation of South Delta - from farmland to local business to infrastructure. He knows the issues, he knows the opportunities, and he knows how to work with others. I believe that this skill, conviction and follow-through is exactly what our community needs today. - Patrick Thompson, Delta HUB Cycling I know ....when asked, Ian Paton is always there, giving countless hours to whatever community group requires his help. Ian has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for our community of South Delta and beyond. We are lucky to have such a community minded individual going to work for us in Victoria. - Leslie Abramson, Community Advocate I've personally known Ian for more than 30 years while I was a lawyer practicing in Ladner and during my two terms on the Parole Board of Canada. I worked with Ian while I was the liaison between the federal government and the Cross Boarder Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers. Ian, as Delta Council Member, supported the Coalition by fully supporting Delta Council's and the Coalition's successful stand against the building of the radio towers at Point Roberts and helping the Coalition's fund raising efforts. From his strong stand on Delta Council in preserving Delta's farmland to lending his auctioneering skills at numerous community charitable fundraising events, Ian has repeatedly shown that he is the right choice for putting South Delta first when working in Victoria. - Ulf Ottho, LLB

DAY OF MOURNING

A casual cup of coffee has gone a long way to improving relations between residents and the Delta police. Launched last June, the Cappuccino with a Cop initiative, which sees police officers meet with residents at local coffee shops, has proven to be a huge success. According to the public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks, the department is averaging at least one coffee session a month since the program started. Cappuccino with a Cop has been held in Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta with not only community policing members in attendance, but also different patrol officers and even Chief Neil Dubord has stopped by some of the sessions, she said. “One of the key points of our community-based policing strategy is to engage with the community,” said Brooks. “We can’t often do that when we are

So we set up times where we can simply interact with the general public, answer their questions and concerns all over a cup of coffee at a local coffee shop.” She said generally the

afternoons have proven popular with residents, but when a request was made through social media to hold evening sessions, those were set up as well. “If we are going to have community-based policing, we need to be in our community — being accessible, having that informal interaction and creating awareness on things that people might have questions about.”

Climber gets some company

Fundraiser at Gingell Park turns into 24-hour event this year DAVE WILLIS

Dave Lemire will have some help when he once again takes on the stairs at Fred Gingell Park in Tsawwassen for a good cause. He’s got another Climb for Kids fundraiser planned next weekend. It marks the third stair climb he’s spearheaded with proceeds benefiting B.C. Children’s Hospital. “I think it might be the best one yet,” said Lemire, the produce manager at Save-On-Foods in Tsawwassen. He said the store and the community are providing plenty of support for the event, which has a twist this year in that it’s a 24-hour relay that will be carried out by a team of 12 taking turns climbing in one-hour and twohour stretches. It starts on Saturday, May 6 at noon. Lemire raised approximately $23,000 with his first two climbs. They’ve seen him trek up and down the stairs, which have been described as Tsawwassen’s version of

This time he’ll be climbing in the early hours of Sunday from midnight to 2 a.m. Lemire said his inspirations remain the same, his nephew Noah Stephenson (who has undergone cochlear implant surgeries) along with Myles McHattie and Johnny Racich. Lemire became friends with Racich, a young kid who would visit with him

while his mom would do her grocery shopping. Racich, who had a condition called Apert’s syndrome, passed away when he was 16. Lemire eventually became friends with McHattie, who gave a eulogy at Johnny’s funeral. Store manager Randy Davies, who’ll be climbing on both days, said it’s good to give back and raise funds for a good cause. The store will also

be doing a barbecue from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Lemire said the Delta Firefighters Charitable Society is helping out again and will be running a pancake breakfast on Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon. He said Delta police Chief Neil Dubord and fire Chief Dan Copeland will drop by at 4 p.m. Saturday to tackle the stairs for an hour. Lemire added Double R Rentals is supplying lighting and generators for the event while Tsawwassen resident Mike MacIver, who manages a Canadian Tire in Richmond, is also donating 120 feet of rope lighting. He also added municipal director of parks, recreation and culture Ken Kuntz has been a big help. Donations can be made at the Tsawwassen SaveOn-Foods or online at the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation website (www. bcchf.ca, search for SaveOn-Foods Climb for Kids 3). Murphy’s Law

E

TED MURPHY

very maturation process comes with its share of bumps in the road, so it stands to reason that would apply to communities as

well. In reporter Sandor Gyarmati’s feature piece Wednesday on the growing gulf between the working public and home ownership, Gordon Price equated Delta to a human being coming out of adolescence. When you think of the municipality in those terms, it puts the housing crisis we’re experiencing into some perspective. Much of Delta’s housing stock was built during the 1960 and ’70s when pretty much anyone with a job could afford a single-family home, so there was little interest in building higher density because there simply wasn’t an appetite for it. The suburbs were for families and families required singlefamily homes. Much has changed over the last halfcentury when it comes to household finances and demographics, to say nothing about growth in the region, however not a lot is different about Delta’s housing inventory. Oh sure, we’ve experienced some amount of development, primarily in town cores in an effort to provide much-needed higher density options, but we’re still that adolescent, not too dissimilar from what we were 50 years ago. Resistance to development is worn as a badge of honour by some in these parts, and to be fair, they’re only trying to preserve an enviable quality of life we have enjoyed for decades. However, maintaining that single-family-centric stock comes with a price, one that’s proving to be too steep for many families that a generation or two ago would have gladly put down roots in Delta. The question facing us today is whether we stay in this suspended state of adolescence or we move into adulthood. Resisting development isn’t going to keep things the same because that era is gone, so not acknowledging change will only push prices higher and create an enclave in which only those that have cashed in elsewhere can afford to live. Maturation doesn’t mean selling out, nor does it entail evolving into what our neighbours have become, but it does mean taking the next step in the process so we don’t end up leaving more and more people behind. That seems like the mature thing to do.

Democracy not what it should be when it lacks transparency

I

t’s election time! Once again we have choices and decisions to make. Invariably a lot of us try to forget about politics between elections. There is a level of frustration around our democratic process as it virtually eliminates the electorate four years at a time. The party candidates mostly come out at election time and few are available in the intervening years. It is what made Vicki Huntington successful here. She made herself available. What we see and hear in the press is what Victoria directs us to see. Press releases and photo-ops appear to be little more than platforms for government spin. Very little press time is spent on discussion of the decision processes and public input is limited at best. The result of this lack of information is that opinions of any government outcome are as varied as the people that express them. Any real information beyond what is seen in the press often needs freedom of information applications. This process is not inexpensive and can be a drawn out and frustrating experience. Sadly, it should also not be necessary if a governing body chooses to be transparent. In a 2015 article in the Globe and Mail, the “triple delete” scandal was considered to be

of “little consequence” to our premier. “The extent to which potentially incriminating information is regularly cleansed from the government computer system” was almost encouraged by Transportation Minister Todd Stone. He suggested he would “not likely stop the practice.” He also suggested that “while Information and Privacy Commissioner Elizabeth Denham might take a dim view of this conduct, her interpretation of the province’s information-access laws is not shared by everyone.” This is a really interesting approach by our current government. At least one FOI document actually had information redacted “to protect certain parties.” If these certain parties are not the constituents, who are they? And why is the government protecting

them? So, the frustration of our “democracy” is not just our lack of information but the actual blocking of information. Little wonder that Canadian voter turnout hovers around the dismal 60 per cent mark. Elections are seen as a series of platforms that will invariably be diminished or discarded once an election has passed. Little faith is given to the belief that these platforms are more than a sales pitch. Who then to believe or vote for? How do you decide which party or candidate will do the most good for your particular riding? Does your candidate actually have a chance to win the riding? Does your candidate represent a specific party? Certainly Delta has proven that a good MLA does not need to be associated with one of the mainstream parties. If B.C. is to advance to a successful (read transparent) government we need to demand transparency of our candidates. Without transparency our “democracy” is a shadow of what it needs to be. Make your vote count on May 9. An immigrant, Peter van der Velden is a former Kootenay councillor who has made Delta home for the past seven years.

regardless of the justification (business case) or the impact on the environment. We also know the negative impact on the Fraser River and the estuary could be substantial. Oh sure, we have an appointed, three-person environmental tribunal to do a review on the project application but it would seem that the fix is in here too. The committee is another appointed group and we know what outcome the appointer wants. It is time to bring things to a head and get our Delta MP and the B.C.

Liberal caucus involved in this issue. This project poses the risk of catastrophic effects on the Fraser and a dramatic conversion of Delta farmland to industrial status. There is no exact science to estimate the scope of the negative effects on the fishery, bird populations and wildlife habitat. Let us try to save and protect the Fraser River and the estuary from this ludicrous master plan by the Port of Vancouver and their cronies who stand to make big bucks on this unnecessary development. Easter Sunday not for power washing Editor: Re: Power washing restrictions needed to maintain some peace and quiet, letter to the editor, April 21 I have to agree 100 per cent with Greg McDonald regarding power washers. He must live in my neighbourhood as my neighbour spent all day on Easter Sunday power washing his driveway. He is retired and could

have done it any day of the week but chose Easter Sunday when many families celebrate. My husband and I decided that we had suffered enough and left to go to a quieter place for the rest of the day. Power washers are serious polluters that emit volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide and a range of air toxins. Also, they use countless gal-

lons of expensive, treated tap water to do their work and the noise level of gas power washers is overpowering. As McDonald said, only electric washers should be allowed. There is nothing wrong with the natural patina concrete gets after a few years and no one is offended by it. It doesn’t need to get power washed away. Dee Dee Wong

Municipality’s noise bylaw needs to be enforced Editor: Re: Power washing restrictions needed to maintain some peace and quiet, letter to the editor, April 21 As I write this note on one of the first clear evenings of 2017, my thoughts

are drowned by a neighbour who is using a shop vac mere metres from my home. It’s 7:39 p.m. Power washers, angle grinders, leaf blowers, unlicensed dirt bikes, lawnmowers and anything else that makes noise are

not to be used according to Delta bylaws after 7 p.m. and never on Sundays. It seems that when a report is made on a violation, not much, if anything, is ever resolved. It’s time Delta started to fine people. Gerald Worobetz

Hoss Hoss is looking for a special person to make his dreams come true! Hoss hasn’t had the happiest beginning, and was not treated well in his past. We’re hoping to find him his perfect family who will give him his deserved happy ending. Hoss is a two year old male Poodle/Lhasa Apso mix. He weighs around 29 lbs. Ideally Hoss would love to meet a single woman who is looking for a devoted, fuzzy companion. He warms up to women quickly, but he may do well with a patient and calm male who will take the time to earn his trust. Hoss is perfectly crate trained and housebroken and walks well on leash. He gets along well with other calm dogs that have manners and don’t get in his face, but as with people, when scared, he gets defensive. Hoss loves snuggling, belly rubs and playing with his favorite toys. Out on walks he’s a big explorer, and he’s always smiling. As with all of our dogs, he is neutered and up to date on all shots and vaccines. Someone who has the time and patience to work with his fear and gain his trust and show him that all people aren’t bad is exactly who this little man needs! In fact, Transport Minister Mark Garneau, who the port reports to, wants us to pose any questions directly to the port for its handling. Isn’t that the same as asking the fox about the status of the chicken coop? It is quite obvious that Garneau, for some reason, is beholding to the port and has no interest in making any changes to its mandate. This brings me to the subject of the Fraser River, the estuary and the master plan of the Port of Vancouver. SDSS Green Team aims to make a difference Students making sleeping mats out of plastic shopping bags IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

A group of dedicated students at South Delta Secondary is doing its part to make the community a better place to live. With their classroom darkened in honour of Lights Out Canada and a day before Earth Day, SDSS Green Team members met last Friday, as they do every Friday, to work on their “green” initiatives. The team’s latest project is making sleeping mats for the homeless out of used plastic shopping bags that have been donated by the Tsawwassen Save-onFoods. The eager students were

busy cutting off the handles of the bags and weaving them together when the Optimist stopped by. Once the project is complete, the team plans to donate the sleeping mats to an organization such as the Union Gospel Mission. Teacher Suzan EganOlsen started the team almost 10 years ago as a way to raise awareness about environmental issues at the school. She said the team is open to all students in every grade. “As the name suggests, we endeavour to support and encourage environmental concerns,” said Egan-Olsen. “I care passionately about environmental concerns and

The students planted those outside the school. Another major initiative for the team is the sorting of the school’s refundables. “Every Wednesday these dedicated students pick up all the refundables from the recycling bins and sort them, so that can be a pretty dirty job, but these kids are there without fail every Wednesday, so that shows the dedication and commitment of this

group,” added Egan-Olsen. “With the money that we raise, and that is around $2,000 every year, we help support numerous organizations and as the income from the refundables comes from students, we also put back into the school.” Over the years the money has helped purchase a water fountain and furniture for the school’s breezeway. “I’m a great believer in doing things in your own community and I hope to encourage young people to do just that,” she said. “I just think we need to recognize these young people and honour their efforts.”

Huntington honoured by float home owners

Retired Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington was recognized by South Delta’s floating home community last Saturday for her more than two decades of support and advocacy. The acknowledgement — the Floating Homes Champion Award — recognizes individuals who have been significant advocates for and have advanced the mission of the floating home community, which is to promote and protect the sustainability of floating homes and their unique lifestyle. Presented at the Floating Home Association of B.C.’s 27th annual general meeting at the Ladner Community Centre, the award acknowledged Huntington’s 25 years of advocacy for floating home developments and floating home owners in Delta and throughout B.C. “All you have to do is Google her name and floating homes to find evidence of her public

Fraser River, such as the lack of long-term water lot leases, the lack of a sustainable dredging plan to ensure the viability of our water channels and federal regulations that prevent financial institutions from recognizing the equity in floating homes for loans or lines of credit.”

something is true and then committing your life to it. In the Bible, faith means believing in God and in what Jesus accomplished on the cross. You can only strengthen your faith by feeding on the source of your faith which is the Word of God. Matthew 4:4 calls the Word of God your daily bread, your daily supply of food. I pray that you will desire victorious faith, that you will submit your life to what you believe in and that you would hunger for the Word of God like a newborn baby hungers for its mother’s milk. And as you feed on the Word, that you will be strengthened for every challenge and every battle you may face.

Effective faith is based on a principle of submission to authority. Matthew 8:5-10 Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.” And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority… Jesus responded, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!” See Biblical faith

he Delta Secondary drama department presents Urinetown: The Musical beginning next week at Genesis Theatre. The satirical comedy is a big, challenging show, says director and teacher Rebecca Salton. The challenge comes from putting all of the moving parts together, she explains. “The complexity of the music, combined with the choreography, combined with adding all of the set pieces, it becomes very challenging. And it’s just big. It is a little bit of a longer show, it’s a couple hours, but it’s so fun.” The play takes place in the not-so distant future in a time of drought, she explains. The public has lost the right to have free access to water, which also means toilets in their homes. People need to use public amenities, filthy

Optimist contributor

The Ancestry Club meets every Wednesday morning at the Village Clinic in Tsawwassen where participants discuss their family history and relationships by sharing their stories with each other. Host Jill Fischer said the premise is to create a structure where everybody can gather together and share their struggles and insights. “Through conversation, stories just arise,” she said. “One person might share something that reminds another person of a story, which is integral to the conversation.” She said the brain can

create long-lasting anxiety from unresolved family experiences in the past, resulting in separation behaviours. By unearthing their history through conversations, a person can be healed and have an optimistic look in the future. “Anxiety hijacks your brain, so to be free from the past is to actually look and resolve it, whatever the conversation is to a neutral place and then you’re free to live,” she said. Marlene Lochkrin, 45, has attended the club on two occasions. She still considers herself new after living in Tsawwassen for six years and was excited when she heard about the meetings. She said she

loves hearing stories from others and inspires her to have a meaningful life in sharing information to her kids. “To come here and dive into each other’s ancestry, like learning about the war and what they did, is just good for the betterment of mankind,” she said. John Miller is an 89-year-old who has attended four meetings. “The association is nice, having to talk to these people and discuss some of their things,” he said. “It’s just nice to get together and talk about it.” The club’s meetings run from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. every Wednesday. Sessions are $10 each. Call 778-434-3072 for more information.

Silent sentinels stand tall in Haida Gwaii

They are silent sentinels standing above the shoreline. Leaning, crumbling and decaying poles, carved more than 100 years ago. Blank eyes still stare out to sea and their symbolism reaches across the ages in a mystical way. After decades of talking about visiting Haida Gwaii, a remote archipelago off the northern coast of B.C., Gary and I are finally standing amongst the poles at one of the most sacred sites in these islands, SGang Gwaay Llnagaay. Our day begins at the float plane dock in Queen Charlotte City. Pete, the pilot, piles us into his 1950s Beaver and smoothly skims across the harbour for takeoff. During the 90-minute flight over green forested hills and brilliant blue waters, he gives us a short course on island geography, legends, history, landmarks and fauna. We learn there is a subspecies of black bear with

elongated jaws specialized for eating seafood but not cougars. He regales us with tales of abandoned villages, logging practices, protests with road blockades and hot spring pools temporarily dried up by an earthquake. The southern part of Haida Gwaii is the first area worldwide to be protected from mountain top to sea bed and is known as the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area and Haida Heritage Site. Ancient SGang Gwaay, one of the best examples of a traditional coastal First Nations village site, is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Pete lands the plane at Rose Harbour and we clamber from the plane to the Rubber Duck zodiac captained by Patrick, a French Canadian with a very dry sense of humour. After awkwardly pulling on orange survival suits that make us look as padded as the Michelin Man, we hang on tightly for a sprayfilled, bouncy half-hour

walk winds through the woods. The temperate rain forest is lush, with tower-

ing trees, spongy moss and tangled undergrowth. Its rich, humid smell mingles with the brisk ocean breeze and feels like it cleans my lungs as I breathe. At the end of the boardwalk we meet Ken, our Haida watchman. Through the summer, watchmen live at the ancient sites in Gwaii Haanas, acting as guardians of the natural and cultural heritage and interpreting the history for visitors. We follow him along a winding path to the village site. It was one of the largest Haida villages and had been occupied for likely 2,000 years or more. The first glimpse of the row of poles makes us stop and stare. They are carved of western red cedar, ideal for the purpose with its straight grain and soft wood. Some are tall memorials, commemorating an ancestor lost at sea, but most are mortuary poles. Mossy logs and a few timbers mark the outlines of where houses stood, of which there were about

20. Ken elaborates on how the post-and-beam houses were constructed. I stand on the beach and imagine how attractive the village must have looked with its row of mortuary poles fronting a line of cedar houses, each with a frontal pole; all backed by the verdant forest. All too soon, we wend our way back onto the Rubber Duck and zip away from the Wailing Island. Before we reach Rose Harbour, we spot a pair of humpback whales and Gary is lucky enough to see one breach. After Pete pumps water out one of the plane’s pontoons while reassuring us, we are back in the sky. As I gaze at the scenery and reflect upon the power and peacefulness of SGang Gwaay, all I can say is haaw’a (thank you), Haida Gwaii. Seniors DON’T BE A VICTIM TO THESE 6 COMMON SCAMS

WE ARE TOLD THAT

WE NEED MORE…

(NC) If internet scams are not on your radar, they should be. Plenty of Canadians have had their personal information stolen through similar schemes. Scammers target seniors with several kinds of fraud, from telephone and email scams to fraudulent telemarketing. Here’s what to look for in six common scams:

VITAMIN D

1. CEO spoofing. Victims receive an email claiming to be from the “CEO” asking them to make an urgent payment outside of normal procedures. Emails are written in a different style than usual and there is an uncommon payment request. The money is inevitably stolen

THE BULBS we use help to activate VITAMIN D

2. Email scam. Phishing scams appear to be legitimate emails, but are fraudulent messages that may lead to downloading viruses or attempts to collect and steal personal information. Beware of unsolicited emails that require clicking through. Equip all hard drives and network systems with anti-phishing software. 3. Text message. Text scams called “smishing” look like they are from a bank or other trusted organization and alert the victim to an account fraud or personal issue. Most smishing messages play on fear. Any correspondence that requires personal details is usually a scam. 4. Internet scams. A fake pop-up sends a “scam alert” message. Clicking on it links to a fake website, or allows malware to be downloaded. Beware of any unsolicited message that requires you to link somewhere else. 5. Phone scam. Fraud over the phone, called “vishing,” is still popular. It happens when a fraudster calls, claiming to be from the bank or some other trusted organization. It is a scam if personal or financial details such as PIN numbers or banking passwords are required. Question every request for payment or information change and never disclose sensitive personal information on a phone call, text or email.

Community Youngsters share seedlings with their East Ladner neighbours for Earth Day DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A group of East Ladner kids marked Earth Day by delivering over 150 maple tree seedlings throughout their neighbourhood. The seedlings came from the backyard of local mom Victoria Vandereerden, who had noticed them while gardening. The seedlings, which

originated from a neighbour’s tree, were dug up and put into small dollar store containers filled with soil, she explained. The group of 10 children from five different houses spent about two hours out in the rain knocking on doors and giving away the seedlings around the neighbourhood. “We were getting tired by the end of it,” said Vandereerden, whose

five kids were among the group. The group of youngsters ranged in age from six to 11. They were singing “Happy Earth Day to You” in the tune of Happy Birthday to You for the first half an hour, Vandereerden said. Last Saturday marked Earth Day, the largest environmental event in the world.

Devils loading up for playoff run Football standouts trying to help rugby team earn first B.C. berth in eight years STORIES BY MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

If the South Delta Sun Devils don’t reach the provincial “AAA” rugby championships for the first time in nine years it won’t be from not attracting enough of the school’s elite athletes. The Sun Devils unveiled their latest weapon on Wednesday in a dominating 60-7 home win over Fleetwood Park. With a fullride football scholarship to the University of Maine in his back pocket, Grant McDonald stepped onto the rugby field for the first time since his Grade 10 year. He promptly contributed in the lopsided affair with some electrifying runs as South Delta handed its Surrey opponent its first loss of the season and improved to 2-1 in league play. UBC bound offensive lineman David Edwards was also an imposing figure in the win. “It’s cool to see guys who have scholarships still understand it’s their Grade 12 year and it’s a chance to have a special send off and go have some fun as well,” said coach Spencer Baines. “Grant practiced for the first time yesterday and you could see how excited everyone was to see him and how the energy level of the entire team picked up.” The Sun Devils’ rugby program is certainly on the rise. The senior team is roughly evenly split with a terrific group of

UBC bound football standout David Edwards was a force on the rugby field for SDSS on Wednesday. Grade 11s — led by U17 national development team member Jarvis Dashkewytch. They reached the Fraser Valley junior championship game a year ago and the current junior squad is unbeaten and a title contender again. It means South Delta will be a major force for the next couple of seasons. They would love to get a head start by qualifying for this year’s provincials but it won’t be easy.

The Fraser Valley is structured in two tiers — a five school Elite League and 10 more playing in Tier One. Top 10 ranked teams Yale, Earl Marriott, Mouat and Elgin Park are good bets to earn four of the five provincial berths up for grabs. The final spot is expected to be a wide-open battle between Tweedsmuir, the other remaining Elite team, along with the top Tier One schools, including the Sun

Devils. The playoffs start with Tier One crossover games against the other pool. “We lost last week to Mountain (24-15) but today was the first time we had a full squad and we showed what we are capable of,” added co-coach Darren Grant. “We were right at the tipping point about entering the Elite League but we had to see what we had for a roster first.”

Dashkewytch juggling three teams & lacrosse

The high school rugby game seems a little slow to Jarvis Dashkewytch for good reason. When the Grade 11 standout isn’t on the field with his classmates, he is training regularly with some of the best young talent in the country as part of the U17 national development program. Dashkewytch is in store for another busy summer — making regular trips to the Canadian Rugby Centre of Excellence in Langford for training and playing for B.C. Rugby’s provincial team program. “It’s a pretty big difference,” he smiled. At school, there is a lot more space and time where with the provincial or national teams even one mistake is vital. It’s a good opportunity to slow down and have more space to try some things. “It’s great just being out there (with my friends and classmates). We have fun on and off the field. There’s lots of camaraderie.”

Jarvis Dashkewytch is part of the U17 national development program.

Dashkewytch typically plays 8-man at the elite level but is suiting up at inside centre for the Devils. He also has experience in Rugby Sevens, aging up to play for the B.C. U18 team that travelled to an international tournament in Las Vegas earlier this year. “With 15s, it’s just great having so many guys on the field but Sevens’ popularity is definitely growing, with the tournament in Vancouver too. I love to play both but 15s is the focus right now.” Even with his heavy rugby commitment, Dashkewytch is continuing his promising box lacrosse career, playing in goal for the Delta Intermediate “A” Islanders. He could even see some action this season as a junior “A” call-up. “Whatever is most important takes first priority,” he said of his workload. “Of course, Playing for my country is at the top.”

Ladner pitcher earns back-to-back weekly awards Keeley Ainge has been nothing short of dominant in her sophomore season with the Douglas College women’s softball team. The Ladner pitcher made it two straight Under Armour NorthWest Athletic Conference Player of the Week Awards thanks to three consecutive victories. Ainge allowed just six runs in 23 innings of work, for a 1.83 ERA, while striking out 20. Two of the wins came against No. 3 ranked Edmonds and No. 7 ranked Bellevue.

Her first award came after working 14.1 innings and allowing only one run in a pair of wins. The Delta Secondary graduate currently leads the conference in ERA and ranks fourth in wins and 10th in strikeouts. The Royals enter this week’s play with a perfect 18-0 record in the NAC North Region This summer, Ainge will be suiting up for Team B.C. that is slated to play at the Canada Cup in July and nationals in August.

Tsawwassen’s Southpointe Academy is once again offering its summer sports camp — focusing on volleyball and basketball. The volleyball camp is slated for July 4-7 and features two daily sessions — mornings for Beginner/Intermediate (Grades 4-7) and afternoons for High Performance (Grades 8-12). The first offers a great introduction to the basic skills, techniques and team play concepts of volleyball, for both students who are new to the game and those looking to improve their skills. Through the use of Volleyball Canada’s Atomic Volleyball (ages 9-11) and Triple Ball programs, the camp will foster learning, promote success, and increase enjoyment in a fun and welcoming environment. The afternoon session will be geared towards dedicated and experienced athletes looking to improve their existing skills, in preparation for playing on a high school team — using Volleyball Canada’s long term development model. Both sessions will be head-

ed by Fiona Donnelly and Michaela Staller. The cost of the camp is $135 and includes a T-shirt and volleyball. Southpointe’s Basketball Camp is slated for July 10-14 and is also broken down into morning (Grades 4-7) and afternoon (Grades 8-12) sessions. Beyond the expected skill development, teaching the fundamentals, and strength and conditioning, this camp takes on a holistic approach: ranging from developing mental toughness to video analysis and yoga. The goal is for students to learn to play and enjoy the game of basketball. All skill levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. The sessions will be led by Paul Wu and Rob McCall who both have extensive experience coaching, ranging from elementary age right up to the senior high school level. The hoop camp costs $165 and includes T-shirt and basketball. Registration forms are available at the Southpointe main office or by visiting southpointe.ca.
