We’re down to the final few days of the 2017 provincial election campaign that will see South Delta voters elect a new representative in the legislature. Five candidates are vying to fill the seat vacated by popular twoterm independent MLA Vicki Huntington, who announced earlier this year she wouldn’t be running again for health reasons. The writ dropped on April 11, but the campaign in Delta South goes back to last September when civic councillor Ian Paton won the Liberal nomination over former police chief Jim Cessford. After Huntington’s announcement in January, Paton

was left as the only candidate in the race, but he was soon joined by independent Nicholas Wong, Green Larry Colero and the NDP’s Bruce Reid, who won his party’s nomination over fellow school trustee Rhiannon Bennett. The B.C. Action Party’s Errol Sherley filed just before the deadline. Prior to Huntington’s narrow victory in 2009, the Liberals had held Delta South since the riding was created in 1991. Huntington won by a more comfortable margin in 2013 with 48 per cent of the popular vote. It remains to be seen if Wong, who has received Huntington’s endorsement as well as support from her constituency machine, can keep a diverse mix of voters under the independent tent while other parties fight to regain them. Paton has reached out to traditional Liberal

voters that strayed to Huntington, while Reid has appealed to the large number of NDP voters who strategically supported the independent MLA. The Greens didn’t plan to run a candidate for the second straight election out of respect for Huntington, but fielded one after she stepped down. Several all-candidates forums have been held over the past three weeks where local issues included the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project, Terminal 2 and Delta Hospital. Paton was far apart from Wong and the others when it came to supporting the bridge. A lifelong Ladner resident, Paton made sure to remind voters of his age as well as his council experience, community involvement and that he knows many cabinet ministers on a first-name

basis. The much younger Wong, also a lifelong resident, countered by talking about his own community involvement and the need for Delta to maintain an independent voice. During the campaign, NDP Leader John Horgan made a couple of stops in the municipality but only in North Delta. Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver didn’t visit Delta. Unlike the last campaign when she didn’t pay a visit to Delta, Liberal Leader Christy Clark made four stops in the community, and that doesn’t include an appearance in Tilbury just days before the writ was dropped. She went to Annacis Island to show how steel workers support the bridge project and made two separate visits to a Scott Road restaurant, once for a show of support for Delta North incumbent Scott Hamilton

Errol Sherley BC Action and the other to receive an enthusiastic endorsement from Delta Mayor Lois Jackson. The mayor thanked Clark for pushing ahead with the bridge, while also describing the Liberal leader as one of the best politicians she’s ever seen. The mayor also gave her support to Paton and Hamilton who were on hand at Monday’s event. The election takes place Tuesday with polling stations open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Advance voting continues today and tomorrow.

Trustees chop ‘surplus’ EAs in an effort to balance budget Number of special needs students on decline in district SANDOR GYARMATI

Plato Plato is a big, lovable pup who is gonna get a bit bigger, probably topping out around 90-100lbs. He’s a lovely Rottweiler/Labrador mix who appears to have little knowledge as to his size! At one year old, Plato is a big, goofy teenager who is good with dogs and cats, but is still learning how to meet other animals while maintaining a certain level of good manners (he’s gets very excited!) Socializing with friendly dogs who can “overlook” his puppy energy and cats who are dog savvy and will help “discipline” him would be very helpful. Plato is a people pooch and loves everyone, especially kids, and, because he’s still learning appropriate manners, he needs to work on not jumping up and being too mouthy. But these things are normal for pups, and Plato would love to have a dedicated family who will help teach him. An older, mellow doggy companion would be ideal to help teach him. He is crate trained and his leash manners and house breaking are coming along very well. Plato is not destructive, does not like being left alone for long periods, and enjoys car rides and outdoor adventures! He’s a good boy and hopes someone will adopt him and carry on helping him to grow up into a perfect boy (which isn’t that far away!) As with all our dogs, he is neutered and up to date on shots and vaccines and has been microchipped! For more information, please email us at pbandchi@gmail.com or call Pets-N-Us at 604-943-0908.

In what’s been described as the least painful amount of cuts in quite some time, the Delta board of education unanimously approved next year’s operating budget Tuesday. To help offset a projected $2 million shortfall, the budget includes reducing the number of education assistants from 324 to 296 staff. Several parents at a public consultation meeting last week raised objections to the move. Trustees on Tuesday noted what the district failed to properly communicate was that the number of special needs students is projected to drop, resulting in a corresponding drop in extra EA funding from the province. Twenty-three of the EAs would have been surplus, according to the board, so in reality just five are to be cut from the budget. “In the roughly 15 years

I’ve been on the board, I’d say this is one of the few budgets where we cut the least. In some ways we did not deliver the information to the public properly because if I heard 28 educational assistants were being cut, I, too, would be up in arms and say, ‘Hey, what’s going on here,’” said trustee Fabian Milat. Milat added in some cases it shouldn’t be assumed an education assistant is the only way to go when it comes to assisting students. More focus should be on targeted intervention, which may not necessarily mean an EA. He said despite all the good, pro-active things the district is doing, too many students are still designated as “high risk” in the primary years and many of them see that status unchanged by the time they reach Grade 12, so that must change. “I want to see these kids move from not meeting expectations to meeting

Students pose questions to candidates Forum at Delta Secondary touches on everything from voucher system to freedom of speech Delta South

VOTES IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Young voters and voters-to-be got involved in the political process last Friday as students from Delta Secondary played host to a Delta South allcandidates forum. Senior students at the Ladner high school posed questions to four of the five candidates running in the provincial election on topics such as education, transportation, free speech, party platforms, health care, taxation and campaign finance reform. One question that provided for a lively debate was whether it would be better to privatize the education system and introduce a voucher system, thereby allowing every child to attend a school that best fits their needs. The NDP’s Bruce Reid said the public school system is the foundation of education in B.C. and Canada. He said he and

his party are not against private schools, but the voucher system would create a lot of chaos. Independent Nicholas Wong said there was merit in having a voucher system and choice in schools, but that was a long-term solution that needed to be looked at incrementally. Liberal Ian Paton encouraged students not to panic when it was suggested that education was in crisis in Delta, stating that he loved Delta schools and praised school trustees and teachers for their efforts. Larry Colero said the Greens would support private schools through funding, but not vouchers. “The idea that private schools are necessarily better than public schools is simply not the case,” he said. “The problem is that our current government is spending money flagrantly and they are withholding money from education that really should have been given to a whole generation of students.” On another topic, Wong said freedom of speech is

the mechanism by which we improve our society, so he would do everything to protect that. Paton said freedom of speech is a constitutional right for every Canadian and should be protected. It’s all about compassion, love for your neighbours and treating everyone with respect, he said. Colero said he agreed with Paton’s thoughts, but has concerns about people speculating on real estate, thus driving up the housing market and making it unaffordable for many to own a home. Reid countered that just plain old common sense from government is what’s needed. “It doesn’t matter why they are being discriminated. People should be looked at by what they have to offer and what they want to contribute to society,” Reid said. One of the final questions asked was whether campaign financing should be reformed. Paton said his campaign has been built on farmers, fisherman and business

I don’t take one nickel from the Liberal Party towards my campaign, it’s from what I have been able to raise,” said Paton. Colero said political financing in B.C. needs major reform and the Green Party would not only ban monetary and non-monetary contribu-

tions from organizations, but also from non-residents of B.C. Reid said he was surprised and glad to hear that Paton didn’t receive any money from the B.C. Liberal Party. He said he would like to see elections where there were no signs or money for political ads. “Personally, I would like to see the corporate and union donations all be cut so that it just comes from individual donors, but even for that the money that goes into it is just sad

because we lose the issues based on who has the most money,” said Reid. Wong said it’s a simple solution: adopting a federal standard banning all corporate, union or foreign donations and capping individual donations at $1,500 per person per year. ••• Last Friday, Reid, Colero and Wong participated in a debate on 107.7 Pulse FM. Excerpts from that debate are posted at https://www.pulsefm.ca under the audio section.

Jackson blasts role mayors are playing #CureCongestion campaign surveys parties on transportation plan and provides guide to voters Delta South

VOTES IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

The Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation should stay out of trying to influence the provincial election. That’s the message from Delta Mayor Lois Jackson following the launch last week of the #CureCongestion campaign. The campaign asked all three main parties for their positions and commitments on the mayors’ 10-year vision, which includes light rail for Surrey, a Broadway subway and replacing the Pattullo Bridge. After reviewing the three parties’ platforms and responses to a questionnaire, the Mayors’ Council published a scorecard. Only the NDP scored five out of five. Jackson was away in Ottawa on municipal business when the campaign was voted on. Had she been at the meeting, she

Mayor Lois Jackson wonders why the #CureCongestion voters’ guide does not include any mention of the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project. said should would have voted against it. “I’ve stated from the beginning that I don’t think that we should, as a mayor’s group, get involved in the provincial campaign. Yes we can tell people what our situation is, what our plan is and what we would look forward to, but I don’t think we should be leading people to make a certain vote for a certain party.” The six-term mayor said she is not necessarily against the campaign, but

is against having a group of mayors influence an election. “I really believe that we have to stay out of the politics of it and send our message strong and clear to whoever is the successor. I think this goes too far,” she said. “We need to encourage people to get out to vote, but vote as you wish. Know the facts. Here at the facts from the TransLink area, but in terms of comparing parties and encouraging people to vote in a certain

direction, I have a problem with that.” Mike Buda, executive director of the TransLink Mayors’ Council Secretariat, said the mayors’ council thought it was important during the provincial campaign that voters had an opportunity to learn as much as they could about their 10-year vision, and the importance of transit and transportation. “Voters need to understand the kind of role the mayors’ council is looking

for of the next provincial government to support that 10-year vision,” said Buda. The voters’ guide does not include any mention of the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project. When asked why it was not included, Buda said the 10-year vision is focused on assets and services that are owned and run by TransLink. “So the Massey Bridge, just like other provincial infrastructure, isn’t something that TransLink is

responsible for and the mayors’ council does not have a position on it because it’s not their bridge,” he said. “I certainly understand the position of Mayor Jackson advocating hard to the province and the feds for funding to address the issues. At the end of the day, it’s a provincial road or bridge and it’s up to the province to address that,” Buda added. Jackson said Buda’s rationale doesn’t hold up. “It is a huge connector for the west side of the Lower Mainland and to have it totally ignored in this fashion is quite insulting frankly and quite unacceptable to me. We have been working on this current proposal for five long years and to not have any mention of a proposal of this nature in the study is baffling. “They are talking about the Pattullo Bridge and that hasn’t been on the books nearly as long, so to my way of thinking, the argument that the Massey project is a provincial project is very thin.”

Murphy’s Law

Y

TED MURPHY

ou only have to look at the campaign stops of the party leaders to get a feel for how they think next Tuesday’s provincial election will play out in Delta’s two ridings. NDP Leader John Horgan visited Delta North twice shortly after the writ was dropped while Liberal Leader Christy Clark has since made three stops in the riding. Only Clark has visited Delta South, and even then it was to use an industrial operation as a backdrop to talk about the forest industry. Green Leader Andrew Weaver has presumably driven through or flown over Delta on his way to and from Vancouver Island, but hasn’t chosen to stop and say hello. Such behaviour would suggest the Liberals and NDP believe they’re in a neck-and-neck battle in Delta North, the outcome in Delta South appears more clear cut and the Greens are focusing their energies elsewhere. Since Delta North was created in 1991, it’s had two NDP and two Liberal MLAs, and with the exception of a Liberal blowout in 2001, all the elections have been close, including last time when former municipal councillor Scott Hamilton bested the NDP’s Sylvia Bishop by just over 200 votes. The appearance of Mayor Lois Jackson at a Clark stop in Delta North this week is further evidence things are tight up there and I suspect the Liberals think a boost from the veteran civic politician, who is extremely popular in North Delta, could help push the incumbent over the top. The move isn’t surprising given Jackson has been a staunch supporter of Clark’s bridge and was a slate mate of Hamilton municipally for more than a decade, but it does raise some eyebrows given the last time she waded into a provincial campaign it didn’t turn out so well. Her endorsement of Wally Oppal in Delta South eight years ago had many calling for the mayor to keep her nose out of provincial politics, and when Vicki Huntington defeated the Liberal heavyweight, it prompted those same people to declare she was out of touch with South Delta voters. Funny things happen during election campaigns, particularly in ones that are tight, so Jackson’s re-emergence is far from shocking. With her retirement now just 18 months away, I don’t imagine the mayor is too concerned about possible repercussions.

Undecided voters could play big role in election outcome

I

found the leadership debate on Global TV last week to be quite fascinating. There was no Gordon Wilson moment or knock-out punch but each leader showed their unique strengths and their weaknesses. Polls this week indicate there was not a clear “winner” in the debate, and the two main parties of note are in a close race, separated only by a small percentage beyond the margin of error. There is still, however, 18 per cent of the polled audience still unsure as to where their vote is going. As we all know by now, polling is not an exact science. In politics, leaders of parties come and go, and generally, we are not voting for them regardless. We vote for the party platform and what we feel will be best for our regions and we vote for whom we feel will be the best supporter of our local interests. On the local front, our issues and interests have been publicly discussed in several all-candidates debates. I have been to a couple of them and appreciate what all of the candidates have done to put themselves out there to talk about how they would address our issues if elected. The latest debate put on by Friends of Delta Hospital was set up like a turkey shoot. It was like we all had to get into a time machine and go back several years to believe that we need to

Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER

“Save our Hospital” as the signage suggested. Luckily, Dr. Robert Shaw, head of the medical staff association, pointed out the situation is much better now and we need to remember that community leaders and businesses here have poured millions of dollars into our hospital and that support will continue. Health care in general is certainly an issue in British Columbia, saving our hospital is not. It has already been saved. I voted last Saturday in the first advance polling day. It took about three minutes of my day. I would encourage everyone to take advantage of the advance polls today and tomorrow. My voting decision was an easy one this election. There are only two candidates that will have the potential to govern (make decisions) and of these two, only one represents a party and platform

that I have seen succeed for a long time. In addition to that, the candidate has an extensive political career and has worked with a multitude of community groups and stakeholders. He knows the issues. In my view, the independent candidate simply cannot match this credibility. Nor, I believe, can he possibly match the political experience and savvy of his predecessor. Professing to have a loud voice for our constituents is a nice idea and perhaps emotionally relevant to representation, but it is not practically so. Governments and official oppositions have the luxury of a caucus to confide in, argue with, and caucus can become aware of critical community issues throughout the province that they can collectively work to solve. Caucus helps to form policy and it has the ear of, and access to, the cabinet if they are in government. Despite best intentions, independents do not have this ability. Where we live, and with our seemingly endless stream of critical issues, we need someone in government who can work with their colleagues in Victoria and with municipal counterparts to make things right. Not all independents are equal Editor: Re: A winning playbook, Murphy’s Law, April 26 While it’s true the independent candidate running in Delta South has some political support behind him, might I suggest there’s also a heavy layer of old fashion political coattail-riding going on. Vicki Huntington had a lifetime of community service behind her before

she took office, and no disrespect to Nicholas Wong, but no matter how you spin it, Wong is no Huntington. My advice to Wong is to establish a solid career path before you seek public office. Deciding to make “politician” your career choice at the tender age of 26 is not a good one. Just ask any washed up politician swept out of office at the age of 35,

without a solid career to pursue. Perhaps the biggest favour voters can do Wong is to save him from himself, by electing someone who does have the life experience required to do the job. Ian Paton has a long history of community service and a proven track record of speaking his mind on issues that matter to the citizens of Delta. Kevin Garvey

Respect for Ian Paton, but not his party

Editor: I have nothing but respect for Ian Paton. He has done a lot for Delta and for that we should be thankful. But I will not be voting for him since he has now become a provincial Liberal. Their legacy is his and I cannot vote for a

candidate that runs with such a deceptive party. Even if he tries to outmaneuver his party on any issues for the betterment of Delta, it will be the party’s majority that decides the outcome and we will be left with a smoke and mirrors explanation. If he had become an

independent candidate I would be first in line to vote for him. An independent might not be able to swing a provincial decision, but at least we get an honest explanation of how decisions will affect Delta, possibly giving us time to react as a community. R. McLean

Rapid transit will only come when quality of life gone Editor: Aspiring MLA Ian Paton painted an idyllic picture of light rail transit serving Tsawwassen and the ferries over the Christy Clark

Bridge at Saturday’s allcandidates meeting. I don’t think Paton understands that South Delta will only get rapid transit when our popula-

tion is many times greater than at present, and our quality of life is gone. All I can say is be careful what you wish for. Adrian Wightman

Colero offers Green choice for voters Party didn’t run candidate last time but is fielding one due to Vicki Huntington’s retirement Delta South

VOTES ES The Optimist sat down with each of the five candidatess runesday’s ning in Delta South in Tuesday’s provincial election to gain n some one insights through one-on-one interviews. The interviewss are verbatim, although some have low been edited for length. Below is Ian Jacques’ interview with olero. Green candidate Larry Colero. Q: Tell us about your personal life A: In the early ’80s my wife and I came out to Ladner from Richmond and we had two wo small kids. The reason we camee here is we thought it would be a great place to raise a family. Wee found a home by Delta Manor School and it turned out to be a fabulous neighbourhood with h great neighbours. It was right by the bus stop for me so I could d commute into Vancouver. We were there for 25 years. global wealth management. From 2004 up until now, my main client has been the Institute of Advanced Financial Planners. I started as their executive director and now I’m consulting on a parttime basis to them as policy advisor. Q: What motivated you to run for office? A: After running the baseball league here in Ladner and chair at the Delta Community Living Society back in the ’90s, my further volunteer career has mostly been about human rights in Southeast Asia, which is a long story I won’t go into. But I’ve been doing that for 25 years. I was chairing a meeting in

The Green Party was going to defer to Vicki again when she said she was going to run again, but when that changed and she announced that she would not be able to run again, I asked Andrew Weaver to make a decision and he did. He felt we needed to offer a choice to Green voters here simply because Vicki was so well known and Nicholas Wong is not at this point. Not to say there was any concern with Nicholas. He’s a great candidate, but we felt it would be the fairest thing to do for Green supporters to give them a Green choice here. So they asked me to run and I just felt like it would be an opportunity t to

You ccan’t have a co coalition between the t NDP, the G Greens or the inde indepenPHOTO BY GORD GOBLE dent and the Greens because voters would not have a choice. It’s up to voters to decide who best represents their beliefs about what is best for this province, so forming a coalition removes that choice and in my mind it would not be a democratic thing to do. If the voters want to coalesce themselves around one candidate versus the other, that’s great — that’s entirely up to them, but to form a formal coalition would not be fair to Green supporters who just want to vote Green or independent supporters who want to vote independent. Then again if we form a coalition, who would end up serving in government? You would have to pick one. Certainly the Greens would not be comfortable picking a candidate that does not represent Green principles. I would be concerned that whoever is the largest party would be the one to take over. No one else has an obligation like I do as the Green Party candidate to actually follow through on a set of commitments based on a well-articulated philosophy and platform. a

Paton never saw himself as politician Life-long Delta farmer and avid volunteer recalls changes that have impacted community Delta South

VOTES The Optimist sat down with each of the five candidates running in Delta South in Tuesday’s provincial election to gain some insights through one-on-one interviews. The interviews are verbatim, although some have been edited for length. Below is Sandor Gyarmati’s interview with Liberal candidate Ian Paton. Q: You entered politics in the 2010 Delta by-election. What convinced you to give it a try? A: I’ve never taken a political science course in my life. I’ve never been a political blogger or political junkie or anything like that. Basically, I was just Ian Paton, doing what I do on my farm and my farm auction business, but I’ve been involved over the years in lots of community stuff, volunteering. So people got to know me through my involvement with the Delta Farmers’ Institute. So when George Hawksworth passed away, I was actually sitting one night in Ladner in a restaurant, or it could have been Speed’s Pub, and the mayor was there with a couple of friends and she called me over and said, “You know, there’s a by-election coming up for one council spot.” And she said, “You should really consider running for council.” I really laughed, I thought it was kind of funny and I never pictured myself really being in politics. But, over a period of two or three weeks, the phone started ringing from other people in the community who had heard Lois (Jackson) talked to me and they started pestering me saying, “Ya, you’d make a good councillor because you’re a common sense guy, you’re from the farming community, your family has been involved over the years in lots of community events.” So, after about three weeks of persuading, they finally talked me into it. Eight of us ran for that one spot and I won by 1,300 votes. I’ve kind of enjoyed this ever since then. Q: What have you learned about being in politics? A: You basically learn municipal politics on the run. There’s no guidebook that’s handed to you on how everything works. You get elected as a municipal councillor and you’re not sure where every department is. You have to quickly become familiar with all the different aspects of the municipality that you’re dealing with. Everything from how council meetings run, you get put on committees and have to chair committees, you have to learn some rules of Roberts how to run meetings properly.

Then you have to learn all about the different bylaws in Delta and zoning areas. You have to understand how the budgets are handed down and figure out where the money is going to get spent. You just don’t go there and deal with one or two things.” Q: How has South Delta changed since you were a kid? A: Obviously things change with the number of people who move in. Things really started to change when the George Massey Tunnel got opened up. When I was a kid in elementary school they were building Highway 99 from the tunnel heading to White Rock. So, of course, that went right though farmland, all through my area in East Delta, so that split a lot of farms in half. Then they decided they were going to build a port and the railway tracks went right in the middle of all the farmland in East Delta, so that was kind of a big shocking change. It was pretty

to the east expropriating land for future use for port expansion, which never panned out. That’s why they eventually started selling all those farms back to farmers. I remember there was no Highway 17 that ran by Paterson Park for the horse

A: There’s way too many people, too many arm chair engineers, who say they’re against the bridge who don’t use the Massey Tunnel to any great extent, so they’re the ones who say we don’t need it. Just because a

And people have no throwing up new apartment literally your cows graze on one idea now that there were parts of buildings and houses for people side of the track and you ask , Ladner that were all farms and to live in. It is what it is. There’s “How do I a certain amount of get my milk housing available Just because a new bridge goes in, it cows on the and just because other side there’s a new bridge doesn’t mean we’re going to throw away of the track our zoning bylaws and start throwing up it doesn’t mean for milking we’re going to open time?” Then, new apartment buildings and houses for the flood gates. of course, it people to live in. was really Q: What do you IAN PATON upsetting think are the odds when they of LRT coming expropriated through Delta any4,000 acres time soon? barns and are now all subdiviof farmland, the backup lands. I remember there was the bridge gets built. It’s somethey really stuck it to Delta with all these different farmers and thing that I would keep pushing friends who lived out that way at all these transmission lines and for. it can be a future possibility.” I’ve always thought that a huge parking lot at the Vancouver Landfill would be a good place for people to park their cars that are coming from South Surrey, White Rock, Tsawwassen. You can park your car there and jump on a SkyTrain and head into Vancouver over the new bridge. It could easily be ground level and then hook in with the system over in Richmond near Oak Street Bridge, then hook in with that line that goes over Cambie. Q: What do you say about all the other cities being against Delta over the bridge? A: I’m on a committee at Metro Vancouver for regional planning and agriculture. I simply see everybody pushing for something in their own communities, and so, collectively, you see a lot of mayors who are pretty buddybuddy, like

Coquitlam, Port Moody and Port Coquitlam. These guys are all buddy-buddies and they stand together. The problem is that a lot of these times a lot of these mayors never cross the river. They don’t spend any time in Ladner or Tsawwassen. They are all from the North Shore. They’re from Burnaby. They’re from Vancouver City Council... So, they don’t understand that some of the fastest growing population is south of the Fraser — Surrey, White Rock, Delta. I just think it’s a bit selfish that they feel any TransLink money should be spent in Vancouver, Burnaby or Coquitlam, but not south of the Fraser. Do you ever go through that tunnel in the morning heading into Vancouver? There’s so many people who don’t understand that the trucks and traffic are lined up almost to Westminster Highway. These are huge trucks ... and they’re all trying to get goods through that tunnel in the morning.

NDP candidate says his strong sense of justice has made him an advocate for people Deltaa South

going into politics by running for school board trustee because I was so concerned by the fact that the Liberal government had made so many cuts to education that I could see were having negative effects on students. I ran for school board trustee to make education part of this campaign and that’s what I’m doing. Even if I don’t win, I have really already won because I have made education a part of the campaign. But this is not a single-issue campaign. There are so many issues and probably social poverty is the thing that grips me the hardest right now. I think it is just terrible that we live in a province that is so wealthy, yet we have the highest child poverty rate in Canada. I know kids who are coming to school hungry and going to bed

not fared well in Delta South. How do you aim to change that? A: That’s a great question. We are not well connected, we don’t have a lot of deep pockets, but my hope is to get the

hungry. I know parents are doing the best they can for their kids and working hard and yet really having trouble to move ahead. In this riding, there are other issues like housing and the environment, but my focus is on really the social issues. The fact that our hospital services are not what they should be. We have to have a government that is concerned about people. The government that is here believes in money and believes that if you put more money into the system to those people at the top, the money will trickle down. I don’t believe that works — it just creates more money for the people at the top. If you’ve got lots of money, getting more money is not going to make you spend more, take more holidays or get more things, but if you give that to those in the middle income they will spend it and that’s good for the economy.

message out and the message is we have to look after people in our society, the message that the Liberals are not good for the average person. We have seen all our services deteriorate and increase in cost. They haven’t created a lot of good-paying, long-lasting jobs, which is their mantra. So the way that I would hope to win and this is a real long shot, I’ve said from the beginning one of the keys to me getting elected is my coverage in the Optimist because we don’t have the deep pockets to put in ads, letter drops, but I’m hoping that values will come through and people will tell their neighbours and tell their friends that we can do this. I think the total population has gotten it that the Liberals need a vacation, they need a break, but in this riding it’s tough because some are saying we can give them a vacation and vote independent, but there is a counter logic to that. If the independent gets in, there is no way that will help get rid of the

Liberals. Q: How do you plan to make society better for the next generation? A: There are a couple of things. First of all when the NDP government gets elected they will be able to put the brakes on the Massey Bridge and the Site C. I believe an alternative to the Massey Tunnel can be done a lot cheaper. We know that in terms of costs per kilometre, tunnels can be a lot

My dad was a union worker with the United Autoworkers ers and I worked there when hen I was going through uniniversity. I’m very grateful to a lot of people who have contributed to my life, so that’s why NDP candidate Bruce Reid says his party is the only choice if the riding is looking for a change in government. I’m doing this. Q: What drew you to the NDP? A: Basically I come from a Christian background as a pastor and I believe the NDP’s values are closest to my Christian values and that is looking after people who are in need. I can’t think of anything in the NDP’s platform that I don’t believe in. Coming from the background that I come from I hopefully will have some influence not to change the party per se, but to maintain an influence that values people. I campaigned for Ed Broadbent and Stephen Lewis when I was in high school, so I was always drawn to their social concern and that they cared about people in the population. I have seen so many people who were struggling and working hard and not being able to get ahead, so that’s a big concern. Q: What made you decide to run in this provincial election? cheaper than the bridge that is being proposed. But in terms of helping the next generation, the first thing I would do, which is not just for future generations, is have an office that is open, much like Vicki Huntington’s, that is open to meet the needs of the constituency. My belief is that the first job of any elected official is to be able to represent the people who they serve. That office needs to be open and functioning and people need to feel comfortable when they walk in. Beyond that, when you get into policies, protecting our agricultural land reserve, our environment and not allowing it to be further destroyed. In terms of education, we need educated people both at the elementary level and the secondary level. There are people who need help that are not getting the help and our society is going to pay for that. We are going to have a number of people who in the past 14, 15 years

haven’t got the support and the to help they need and it’s going g because of lack come back on us becau of training. secondary, it In terms of post secon expensive is three times more expe graduate than now for kids who gradu it was when the Liberals came are going into power, so people ar to have these huge debts debt when university. they graduate from univ And the other issue aand I answers for don’t have all the answe this, is the huge housing crisis. affordable We have to have afforda Horgan’s polihousing and John Horga cies are a start to getting us back on track. consider Q: Why do you consi yourself to be the best alternaand Ian tive to the Liberals an Paton? there are a A: I think the answers to couple of ans that question. question One, particular in this parti indepenriding, an in the ability dent has th to make a ffuss and sometimes the parties will work because with him b one more it’s just on working person w with you, you but in long run the lo the ability t work as to aan independent and get something done is limited, whether iit’s oppossition or governgo ment, so I PHOTO BY GORD GOBLE believe in our situation the Liberals have to go. We have to have a different direction in government in this province, so that makes me a better candidate than Ian Paton because he is Liberal. The independent provides a protest vote, but in terms of really making constructive change or to be able to have constructive change it’s limited. When you talk about the Greens, if they believed John Horgan it would be to their advantage to give all their support to John Horgan, get the NDP elected and then the next election we would have a lot of Green candidates because Horgan has made a commitment to change the voting system, so logically all the Greens should support the NDP and then the next election you will have lots of Green candidates. If this riding is looking for a change in government and a break from Liberal policies, then the only choice is the NDP.

Sherley is all about using common sense B.C. Action Party candidate standing up for those upset over how tax dollars are being spent Delta South

VOTES The Optimist sat down with each of the five candidates running in Delta South in Tuesday’s provincial election to gain some insights through one-on-one interviews. The interviews are verbatim, although some have been edited for length. Below is Sandor Gyarmati’s interview with the B.C. Action Party’s Errol Sherley. Q: What’s different about the B.C. Action Party? A: The B.C. Action Party, basically, is a grassroots, conservative group of citizens who are ticked off over the way the government has been spending our tax money, including all these mega projects. It’s basically people who want everything done with common sense. Q: How challenging has it been to spread the word and even find candidates? A: It is very, very difficult. I’ve been there since the beginning and the big thing is to try to get recognition and separate ourselves from the other groups to get our message across. We’re

Delta South

VOTES

Delta South candidates Q&A

We posed five questions to each of the local candidates. Here are their answers: Larry Colero Green We need a new crossing, but can’t know if a bridge is the best plan because there was no transparent assessment of alternatives to the Liberals’ $3.5-billion boondoggle, which includes no rapid transit. Greens would find a less costly solution to allow investment in rapid transit to South Delta.

Ian Paton Liberal The bridge is coming and we need a strong representative to demonstrate leadership to make it the best bridge possible. Residents of Delta had the opportunity to look at five different options and this plan had the least impact on farmland and environment.

Bruce Reid NDP The proposed bridge needs to be thoroughly examined and justified. This has not been done. We need to seriously look at other options, such as a second tunnel which is much cheaper, restricting large commercial vehicles during peak hours and vigorously exploring rapid transit options.

Errol Sherley BC Action Party No, the 10-lane bridge is one of many Fat Cat Liberal projects that will lead to an ever-growing provincial debt. We, at the BC Action Party, would have had a larger open consultation process, plus less backroom deals. This is one of many reasons I got into this election.

Nicholas Wong Independent We need a crossing, but there is insufficient information to determine the bridge is the best for our community, only redacted documents. I spoke with the United Trucking Association who said they are open to stopping trucks through the tunnel at the beginning of rush hour. We should pursue this.

Housing in South Delta and elsewhere in the region is out of reach for many, particularly young people, so what happens if the next generation can’t afford to live here?

For many, buying or renting a home here is already out of reach. We will increase housing supply by reducing foreign demand. Foreign speculators would face a 30 per cent buyers’ tax applied all across B.C. With the federal authorities, we will also reduce the use of real estate for money laundering.

Only the BC Liberals have put forward a concrete plan to support first-time homebuyers with the BC HOME Partnership program; full or partial exemption from the property transfer tax; and the 15 per cent foreign buyer tax to calm the real estate market.

The NDP’s 10-year housing affordability plan will build 114,000 new mixed housing units to increase the housing supply, close the loopholes that allows speculators to flip housing, establish a multi-agency task force to fight fraud in the real estate market and establish a renters tax credit.

This is a very loaded question. The quest to find affordable homes is a hard one. There is housing and it is obtainable, but there are areas that are out of reach these days. They are primarily in the Vancouver landscape and in neighbourhoods that are already out of reach of the common first-time home buyer.

Where will businesses get their employees if they cannot afford to live here? Our local economy will fail. This is an urgent problem which requires creative solutions to create housing alternatives for young families and those looking to downsize. We should divert the foreign home buyers’ tax to address this.

With everything from jet fuel to LNG facilities in the works, are you worried environmental harm will come to the Fraser River due to increased industrial activity?

Highly explosive LNG tankers endanger both river ecology and the lives of South Delta residents. Add jet fuel shipments, Kinder Morgan’s bitumen along our coast and toxic thermal coal (I doubt it will be banned) with no cumulative impact assessment = reckless risk-taking with questionable benefit. Not a Green economy!

I worry all the time. I’m a farmer whose family has a 100-year history of living off the land. We must always be vigilant in protecting the environment, and I believe B.C. has a very strong regulatory regime in place to ensure we protect our environment while creating good jobs for people.

The BC NDP will invest in the long-term success of our economy, while doing our part to fight climate change. We will renew the Climate Leadership panel and work towards implementing their recommendations. Together, we’ll put B.C. on a path to meeting our legislated 2050 greenhouse gas emission reduction target.

Yes I worry, I live and work at the mouth of the Fraser. I want to see it remain usable and safe for my family, and the generations of people who live in this province. The Liberal Party has plans to just treat this main life line of ours like another of their vanity projects.

It is a disgrace that the cumulative effects of development on the Fraser have not been examined. The Fraser ecosystem is essential to the fish and bird populations which impact enjoyment, tourism and fishing. The environment is a huge part of South Delta’s quality of life. It must be protected.

Delta Hospital is considered a jewel by many in the community, but it also has been the site of controversy over the years. What is your vision for Delta Hospital?

I envision a hospital that doesn’t need to be defended from attacks by our own government. It would be sufficiently funded and staffed with doctors, nurses and nurse practitioners for world-class healthcare. A Green focus on wellness and disease prevention will reduce the demand for acute care.

My family and I have been avid supporters, volunteers, fundraisers and advocates for Delta Hospital, and the Delta Hospital Foundation, for decades. My 89-year-old mother still volunteers there every week. We’ve made a lot of improvements and I’m excited to keep fighting to make our hospital even better than it already is.

Too many British Columbians are not getting the healthcare they need. As our region grows, so should our facilities. The NDP will invest in hospitals and care facilities across B.C., including Delta Hospital which is the envy of the Lower Mainland for the compassionate approach staff applies to all their patients.

My vision for Delta Hospital is to uphold its fantastic reputation, its doors always open, and coffers always full. We can all be proud to look at our hospital and know it will always be there if we are in need of its services. As we recall, it was the Liberal Party that wanted to close its doors.

Delta Hospital has been chronically underfunded since the BC Liberals tried to close it and severely cut back its services. It needs to be expanded to accommodate an aging population and all the incoming growth. A fully functioning hospital would also attract and retain family physicians. Our community supports it.

Delta is a rather unique mix of rural, urban and industrial sectors that is also a key transportation hub. How would your economic platform benefit Delta?

Globally, the emerging economy comprises clean businesses and small-scale, sustainable enterprise. That’s a dramatic shift from industries like the coal port, Terminal 2 and LNG tankers, which impinge on farmland and endanger critical ecological sites. Greens would encourage innovative new models of business and phase out the old.

We’re so fortunate to have fully separated rural, urban and industrial lands. The industrial lands in Tilbury and Annacis Island are home to thousands of good jobs and a great tax base for Delta. Our plan is to keep growing the economy, protect farmland and support local business.

The backbone of our industrial strategy is small business and our mixed industrial areas. While healthy growth and expansion is always the goal, it should be monitored to maximize employment and protect our environment.

Again another loaded question, We at the BC Action Party have a plan that mixes all these qualities and more. We would work to keep this area a beacon of prosperity and not overlook its potential and vulnerabilities.

The Lower Mainland is an attractive place to live. B.C.’s quality of life makes it ideal for professionals. By sustaining our resource economy while transitioning into an emphasis on technology, global finance, and the green economy, we can minimize industrial impacts and grow our provincial economy for the future.

Ground was broken on the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project last month, so is a 10-lane bridge the best plan to move people and goods across the Fraser River?

LOCAL SECRETS: When people think of British Columbia, they think of rainforests. But since the Pacific Ocean laps the length of the province, there are also miles of coastal beaches to explore — not to mention islands. A few of these beaches have a pretty high profile, such as Kitsilano Beach in Vancouver, which pulses with people swimming and spiking beach volleyballs. But others offer a more low-key scene as locals spread out to claim their own patches of paradise. Here are five gorgeous beaches that will leave you smiling as you shake the sand out of your bag. Each offers something different, from quiet reflection to invigorating surf, from family fun to... well, naked fun. Relax, like a local. RATHTREVOR BEACH WHERE: Parksville, East Coast of Vancouver Island BEST FOR: Beachcombing and Family Fun If Rathtrevor Beach had an online dating profile, it would mention building sandcastles

with the kids by day and long sunset walks at night. Located in the family-vacation destination of Parksville, this two-kilometre (1.2-mi) sandy beach offers plenty of room for fun. At low tide, the ocean recedes for almost a kilometre (0.6 mi), inviting exploration of its sandy pools. Hiking and biking trails and nature programs keep the clan entertained, and in the evening, you can make s’mores at the campgrounds. Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park is popular year-round: from February to April, it’s one of the best bird-watching spots on Vancouver Island to view migrating Brant geese. NORTH BEACH WHERE: Haida Gwaii, Northern British Columbia BEST FOR: Surfing and Splendid Isolation North Beach is a stunner. Stretching for miles on the northern tip of Graham Island, it’s where the rainforest of Naikoon Provincial Park meets the ocean. Hike up to Tow Hill and you’ll be rewarded with windswept

views of the beach’s wide expanse. Down on the sand, you can catch dungeness crab with just a fishing net in early summer. From October to May, it’s the perfect place to wade in with a surfboard, and because of its remote location, you’re likely to have the waves to yourself.

North Beach

WRECK BEACH

WHERE: Vancouver

BEST FOR: Shedding Inhibitions

While most people in Vancouver know about Wreck Beach, relatively few have actually seen it. North America’s largest naturist beach is hidden away at the city’s western tip by the University of British Columbia, and you need to descend nearly 500 steps to get there. That doesn’t mean it’s not popular: on a summer weekend it might see thousands of visitors on the mostly sandy 7.8-km (4.8-mi) stretch. Clothing is optional. The Wreck Beach Preservation Society promotes respect and body acceptance through nude recreation.

SOUTH BEACH & SUTHERLAND BEACH WHERE: Savary Island, Northern Sunshine Coast BEST FOR: White Sand & Subtropical Vibes With clear water lapping white sand, the beaches surrounding tiny Savary Island have been called the “Hawaii of the North.” This is no Waikiki however: the island is off-grid, and its remote location means it retains its laidback feel. Located at the entrance to Desolation Sound, Savory is accessible only by floatplane, boat, barge, or water taxi from Lund, which itself is the “end of the road” as it’s the furthest point north on Highway 101. You can visit in a daytrip from Lund; bring a bike to cycle from beach to beach.

GYRO BEACH

WHERE: Osoyoos, South Okanagan BEST FOR: Warm-Water Wading

Beaches don’t have to be next to the ocean: you’ll find this one in Canada’s only desert. Osoyoos Lake is an oasis in the town of Osoyoos, and it’s the perfect place for a dip in the summer when the mercury rises past 35˚C (95˚F). Gyro Beach is conveniently located in the city’s downtown core, backed by grassy parkland and shady trees. There are swimming areas for the kids, and watersports on the lake available for adventure seekers. Explore BC trip ideas at BCexplorer.com

Earthwise hosting Bee-Friendly Plant Sale Feed the bees and create stunning displays for your garden at Earthwise Society’s annual BeeFriendly Plant Sale this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The bees are starting to buzz in our backyards and on our balconies with the warming weather, and we have pollinators to thank for one of every three bites of food we eat. Sadly, pollinator populations are in decline for many reasons,

including loss of habitat and pesticide use. We can all do our part to provide pesticide-free pollinator habitat by planting bee friendly plants that provide pollen and nectar from March to October. In addition to a selection of bee-friendly plants, the plant sale will have Bee Kits with seven perennial plants that bloom in sequence from spring until fall. These plants are not just great for bees as gar-

deners love them for their colourful flowers throughout the year. The sale will also have a large selection recommended for earth-friendly gardens such as native, shade-tolerant and drought-tolerant plants as well as seeds, local honey, mason bee sponsorships and more. Not sure what to plant? Learn more about ecological gardening and the best plants for pollina-

tors by chatting with the Earthwise horticultural staff who are creating pollinator and other gardens around Delta. Then traipse through the Earthwise Garden and see pollinator plants attract buzzing visitors. All proceeds from the plant sale go to Feed the Bees and other Earthwise charitable programs. The Earthwise Garden is located at 6400-3rd Ave. in Boundary Bay.

Here we are in the midst of a provincial election campaign that, as always, causes many questions, doubts, trust issues and so much more angst. We weigh the question: Do I vote, do I not vote through personal, political, philosophical and even spiritual motivations? Perhaps a little levity is just what we need right now. I know, some will question my timing, but I did write this on Thursday the 4th for publication on the 5th. So what are we to consider if you haven’t already voted in early polls? Yes, we know the rhetoric about it being our civic duty and it is. We bandy the idea around that if we

don’t vote then we have no right to complain or protest after the fact and there’s some validity to this stance, although I’m not sure how that is to be monitored since our vote

is supposedly private. And yes, we want to set a good example for the generations following us to access that which is a privileged reality in our democratic part of the world. For my part, as a Christian minister, I tend to prefer the language of being faithful to our calling as people who hear the word of scripture. “He has told you … what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micha 6:8). It seems to me that we do this in the corporate or societal context by coming to agreement, together, about how this will be accomplished.

tudents from Delta’s opera and performance academy will be performing at the inaugural Vancouver Opera Festival next Thursday. Their performance highlights five notable people (George-Étienne Cartier, Emily Carr, Bertha Wilson, Elijah Harper and

David Suzuki) in Canada’s history and explores a turning point in their lives and how they influenced our country, explains student Linden Smith, who’s in Grade 8 at Delta Secondary. A lot of research has gone into the show, says student Walter Cruz. Students have worked hard on the project, says program teacher coordinator Julianna Kato. “It’s theirs, really. The

dialogue, the songs, the melodies,” she says. Being a part of the upcoming festival is a unique opportunity, says student Samantha van Gogh, who’s in Grade 12 at South Delta Secondary. “It’s taking students … and putting them in a place that they’d never be on their own,” she says. Some of the academy students are also volunteering at the festival. The academy is offered

in conjunction with the Vancouver Opera. Vancouver Opera director of education and community outreach Colleen Maybin says opera is grounded in emotional story telling so it really engages students in problem solving and creative thinking around big issues. “Opera doesn’t deal with small stories. It deals with big, social stories,” she says. The inaugural festival

features professional productions of Otello, The Marriage of Figaro and Dead Man Walking along with panel talks, community events and backstage tours. The academy’s performance, Canadian Heroes: From Coast to Coast, takes place Thursday, May 11 at 6 p.m. at the Queen Elizabeth Plaza in Vancouver. Admission is free. Visit festival.vancouveropera.ca for more.

Vancouver Orpheus Male Choir to visit Ladner DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Vancouver Orpheus Male Choir is coming to Ladner this weekend with a show that celebrates Canada’s 150th birthday. Sunday’s performance includes songs that have been either arranged or composed by Canadians, particularly in Vancouver, notes choir member Robert Forbes. “There’s a lot of very good arrangers and composers here, so we like to highlight them,” Forbes says. The choir is in the midst of a series of spring concerts marking the country’s birthday.

The Vancouver Orpheus Male Choir will be performing Sunday at Ladner United Church. “One of the key things for us presenting music is for the audience, of course,

to enjoy it,” he says. Typically shows include turnouts in the high 30s

of the choir’s 45-voice membership, which hails from around the Lower

Mainland, Forbes notes. He says the choir provides good fun and camaraderie and is good for those looking for a hobby. The choir was formed in 1992 for men of all ages. It focuses on popular songs from many times and lands, including Broadway show tunes, spirituals, sea shanties, and rousing male voice classics, its website notes. Liana Savard is the group’s artistic director while Barry Yamanouchi is the choir’s accompanist. The show, set for 3 p.m., is part of the Sunday @3! Concert series at Ladner United Church, 4960-48th Ave. Admission costs $10.

Nancy Dean and Ulf Ottho hold paintings that have been selected for inclusion in next year’s Ladner Rotary Club calendar.

Guild paintings in Rotary calendar

South Delta Artists Guild members will see their work grace the pages of the Rotary Club of Ladner’s next fundraising calendar. A dozen paintings were selected from the guild’s Embracing South Delta exhibit that wrapped up at the end of April. It marked a new collaboration between the

two local groups. “I thought it went really well,” said guild president Nancy Dean. Artists were invited to submit paintings depicting local scenes. The guild hired jurors to select 24 semi-finalists and from those, Rotary Club members chose the final 12. Dean said 90 paintings from 45 artists were sub-

mitted and that even some artists who don’t usually paint landscapes took part. Artists who had their work selected included Jodie Blaney, Monica Burrow, Nancy Dean, Anita de Vos (two paintings), Enya Jorge, Audrey Lowe, Lennart Osterlind, Catherine Sheppard, Ulf Ottho (two paintings) and Marlene Strain.

International Migratory Birds Day will once again be celebrated on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 14, at historic Cammidge House in Boundary Bay Regional Park. Mother’s Day Tea with the Birds will be a little shorter this year, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., but there will be lots to see and do. Visitors will have an opportunity to get close up views of captive birds of prey and learn how Raptor Ranch rescues and rehabilitates these birds and provides them with a good quality of life as well as educating the public about these fascinating creatures. In keeping with this year’s theme of Stopover Points: Helping Birds along the Way, Metro Vancouver park interpreters and Bird Studies Canada will engage visitors in discussion about what they can do to help migrating birds as they stop to rest and feed. Raptor Ranch will have captive birds of prey like this northern goshawk at next Sunday’s event. Wildlife Trust will show how it helps with initiatives such as the Winter Cover Crop stewardship program. There’s a reason thousands of snow geese can be seen on Delta’s farmers’ fields in the winter. Delta Naturalists Society will have an educational display, including lots of pictures and information about our feathered friends. The Boundary Bay Park Association will be highlighting ways people can become involved in

conserving the park and keeping it a friendly haven for birds. A birding walk around the park will be led by Tom Bearss, president of the Delta Naturalists Society. It wouldn’t be a Mother’s Day Tea without the tea, and the Corporation of Delta is once again providing refreshments. Hosted by the Boundary Bay Park Association and the Corporation of Delta, the event is free and suitable for all ages.

Gee is giving back with Love Abbey fundraiser IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

A life-changing relationship has spurred a Ladner man to give back. Nathaniel Gee was born and raised in Ladner. When he was 18 he admits that his life was in chaos and he didn’t know where he was headed. That’s when he met Scott Morrison who literally changed his life. “I went down a bit of a rocky path when I was 18. Scott came into my life and showed me a better way to live,” Gee said. The Morrisons moved from Vancouver back to their home in Thunder Bay, Ont. in 2015 where they established the Urban Abbey, a non-profit organization that works for the betterment of the community.

Along with a youth shelter, they have created a program called Thrive to accommodate young teens who are pregnant and addicted to opiates. Gee has gone to volunteer at the Urban Abbey and plans to return there this summer with girlfriend Amelia Nickel. Tomorrow, Gee, Nickel and their friends are holding a fundraiser at Cedar Park Church in Ladner called Love Abbey. The event is being billed as a fun date night out complete with deserts, entertainment, a silent auction and a chance to learn what the Urban Abbey is all about. Tickets are $20. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. For more information and ticket inquiries, visit their Facebook page: @ lovetheurbanabbey.

Music trivia fundraiser to benefit juvenile diabetes DAVE WILLIS

A local family is organizing a music trivia fundraiser next Friday in Tsawwassen to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Luka Falconer, 16, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in the fall of 2011. He has to test his blood sugar levels and take insulin throughout the day. “You do get used to it after a while, but it’s still pretty difficult, especially if you’re having that off day where all your measuring is out of whack,” the Tsawwassen teenager says. If he has low blood sugar he can’t participate in exercise and at school he can be pulled out of exams, or classes depending how his day is and how his sugar levels are, explains Luka’s mom Mary. “It’s a constant monitor-

Early Birds still going strong 26-year-old men’s golf club features over 70 members and is all about camaraderie MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The only thing required to be part of this men’s golf club is an alarm clock. It was back in the early 1990s when some Tunnel Town curlers began teeing off early weekday mornings at the then Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club. Twenty-six years later, the Tsawwassen Early Birds are as strong as ever with over 70 members playing the re-designed Tsawwassen Springs Course, starting at 7:30 a.m. on Mondays and Fridays. On this particularly rainy Monday, about 18 braved the elments. “Other clubs block times but we just show up, put your name on the sign-up sheet and tee off consecutively,” explained club captain Wade Ritchie. “That way you get to play with different people all the time. There is an incredibly diverse background of members and they range from their mid-50s to early 90s. We have single digit handicappers to over 30 and the good golfers don’t mind playing with anyone. Being competitive is not what the nature of the club is all about.” Among members is Delta Sports Hall of Fame inductee Harry Jenkins. He has lived in Tsawwassen for the past 52 years and turns 90 in August. He is one of the many who plays twice a week and, remarkably, doesn’t use a power cart. “I’m just thankful to even be out on the course regardless if I have a good game or not. That’s the way I look at it and probably a lot of the others feel the same way,” smiled Jenkins. “It’s probably the most reasonable men’s club in the Lower Mainland to join.” Annual membership is $50 which goes towards a year-end banquet and prizes in mid-October. There are typically month end tournaments which are put together through a computer program that factors in everyone’s handicap.

Early Birds’ regulars (left to right) Rob Dean, Harry Jenkins, Wade Ritchie and Rob Hopper. The 70-plus member club is first off the tee on Monday and Friday mornings at Tsawwassen Springs. New members are welcome. Veterinarian Rob Hopper’s work schedule allows him to only play Fridays. He wasn’t even looking for a club to join when he came onboard. Now golf is secondary to the friendships he has built. “I used to just come out here on my own. They saw me a few times and invited me over to join them. It’s a great social thing and a golf game gets in the way,” laughed Hopper. The club has also built an excellent relationship with Tsawwassen Springs which provides

reasonable green fees for the early morning rounds. “We don’t take our golf too serious but we have good people in this group and a good range of players,” added Rob Dean, another Early Bird regular. “We have some great friends who have come out of this.” New members are welcome at any time. For more information contact Wade Ritchie at wader3122@gmail.com or the Tsawwassen Springs Pro Shop.

Delta Gymnastics head to Oval for 33rd Invitational

Delta Gymnastics heads to the Richmond Olympic Oval this weekend to host its 33rd annual Delta Invitational and Cash and Carry Cup. The event, which gets underway today, will feature close to 1,100 athletes representing B.C., Alberta and the Northwest Territories. “Our theme this year is ‘Embrace the Journey’ as gymnastics teaches that we must embrace the good and bad days, the easy and hard moments, the successes and the failures, the friendships and the rivalries, the fun and difficult experiences,” explained Ana Arciniega, Delta Gymnastics Executive Director. “Gymnastics represents a journey in terms of age, growth, skill development,

and ultimately a desire to live an active and healthy lifestyle. This is an overarching theme applicable to our hard working gymnasts, their supporting families and our dedicated coaches.” The always popular Cash & Carry Cup is a unique format that judges not the difficulty of the skills but the gymnast’s execution which levels the playing field for athletes. This year Olympian Scott Morgan will be in attendance. “Our Cash & Carry Cup honours high level athletes that want to spice up their gymnastics experience by adding elements of fun, camaraderie, sportsmanship and yes, cash!,” continued Arciniega. “We are proud to offer $10,000 in prize money to go towards training

expenses. It makes this an exciting competition that is not to be missed!” The Cash & Carry Cup session will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets can be purchased at the event Admissions table. “We are very pleased to return to the Oval for a second year in a row as it is an iconic building that offers our gymnasts and spectators an amazing and unforgettable experience, where they can showcase their perfected skills and celebrate their success,” added Arciniega. Delta Gymnastics Society is thankful for the support of many sponsors, including McDonald’s Restaurants, volunteers and organizing committee members for making the event possible.

’01 Invaders 2nd in Kelowna

South Delta Invaders 2001 rep fastpitch team is off to a terrific start this season — finishing second at the highlycompetitive Spring Sizzle Tournament in Kelowna. The event featured 22 teams, including all of the top contenders in the province. The Invaders took out two of their main rivals to advance to the championship game — defeating the Abbotsford Outlaws 4-1, then the Surrey Storm by the same score in the semi-finals. The gold

medal battle saw South Delta launch a furious rally in the final inning, nearly erasing a four-run deficit in a 6-5 loss to the Cloverdale Fury. The girls are coached by Lance Claybo, with assistance from Peter Hibrant. The roster includes: Thea Palmer, Hillary Nelson, Emma Miller, Julia Chorney, Abby Foster, Elizabeth Lane, Erin Monastersky, Jenaya Basi, Rachel Schultz, Natasha Bonn, Sydney Drake, Shae Claybo and Callie Wolsey.
