Ian Paton won the seat, but Nicholas Wong got the girl. There wasn’t a whole lot of drama in Tuesday’s provincial election results in Delta South as Paton easily reclaimed the riding for the Liberals, but the independent candidate made a splash when he proposed to girlfriend Lindsey Gorman. Paton, a three-term municipal councillor, jumped out to a

MLA Vicki Huntington and keep the riding independent. Paton addressed more than 100 cheering supporters at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn, saying he was honoured and humbled that voters decided he was the candidate best suited to represent them in Victoria. Initial voter turnout in Delta South was 68 per cent, the same as it was four years ago when it was the third hghest in the province. The Liberals held Delta

He’s eager to get going in his new job as MLA. Delta farmer and municipal councillor Ian Paton, coming off a decisive victory in Tuesday’s provincial election to take back Delta South for the Liberals, said he’s looking forward to once again having to learn quickly on the job. It’s something he had to do when he was elected to Delta council seven years ago. Paton, who received 44 per cent of the popular vote, up about eight per cent from what the Liberals had in 2013, believes his experience on council as well as his profile in the community undoubtedly helped convince voters to switch back to the ruling party. “I’m not old, but I’m not young. I turned 60 in August and I spent my whole life on my farm here, so I know the whole South Delta area like the back of my hand. Then, being on Delta city council for almost seven years now made me totally aware of issues that we have,” he said. “We deal with provincial issues all the time at the municipal level. We’re dealing with transportation, traffic issues, we’re dealing with water lot leases on the river, we’re dealing with coal dust out there on the port, all sorts

Ian Paton walks to the podium to give his victory speech Tuesday night at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn. of different things. I think it’s going to be a really good connection that I have at the MLA level with my experience.” As far as what happened provincially with the Liberals currently in a minority government position, Paton isn’t sure what to make of what unfolded, including why his friend, Delta North Liberal MLA Scott Hamilton, went down to defeat. “It’s pretty interesting how everything played out. It’s sort of rural versus urban in some respects, I guess. “I’m really shocked about Scott Hamilton. I think he’s done a really good job bringing things forward as a representative of the Liberal Party in
power to not only North Delta but South Delta. He’s been our connection to South Delta as far as I’m concerned, getting things done through the government, so it’s a real loss he got knocked off.” The George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project was a much talked about issue during the campaign and the fact the Liberals won all four seats in Richmond should be noted, Paton added. “I hope it sends a message that you’re dealing with a government that has a ton of extremely smart people working behind the scenes that draw up ideas what’s going to work best for our infrastructure projects. I think they (Richmond
council) have to come to the realization that this isn’t about people writing letters to the editor saying, ‘You should just twin the tunnel.’ These are smart people that have decided after hundreds of community consultation meetings this new bridge is the best option and it’s going to work.” Paton said it’s too early to predict if the NDP and Greens might get together to halt the bridge project, which is already underway, perhaps triggering another election. “We’ve already started and there’s all sorts of things happening with this new bridge as far as preparing to move hydro lines over. Even out on Highway 99 by my way
they’re starting to do work at night to widen Highway 99 halfway to White Rock. So there’s a lot of things in action right now,” he said. ‘I’d be shocked if the NDP teamed up with the Greens and said, ‘Let’s stop this bridge from happening.’ “What would their answer be? Leave it for another 10 years until somebody makes a decision? We’ve got to get on with this congestion nightmare.” As far as stepping down from his council seat and triggering a municipal by-election, Paton said he still has to talk things over with Mayor Lois Jackson as well as the premier to determine the best course of action.

Liberals put a stop to independent streak
Nicholas Wong can’t duplicate Huntington’s feat Delta South
VOTES IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Delta South is independent no more. After eight years with Vicki Huntington as MLA, hopes were high that Nicholas Wong would be able to keep the independent run going, but reality set in early Tuesday night at the Sundance Pub in East Ladner.
Ian Paton held an early lead and was never really challenged as he took back the riding for the Liberals. “I think that everyone on the team did everything that they could. We had a short amount of time from the moment that Vicki announced that she was not going to be running and we did the most we could with every single hour. I’m very proud of everyone who helped make this possible,” said Wong. Minutes before the polls

closed, Wong proposed to girlfriend Lindsey Gorman, making for a unique election night subplot. “I just thought, why not, you have to let it ride all on one night,” he said. When several media outlets declared Paton the winner just before 9 p.m., Wong made his way around the room personally thanking every supporter. “The only thing disappointing is the results. Everything else has been amazing and I can’t thank the community and everyone who has been supportive and helped out on the campaign enough,” Wong said. “They have made this a fantastic experience and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.” Of the 87 provincial ridings, 23 of them fielded a total of 31 independent candidates and, with 6,050 votes, Wong garnered far and away the most support among them. When asked if how he

I think people are now fully aware of the dangers and the detriment to our
society that the two-party system really poses.” Huntington said she was hopeful the legacy of independence would have been enough to pull Wong through, but it just wasn’t meant to be. “I think Nicholas had a fantastic showing. He has about 50 per cent of the vote (she received) and I think that is wonderful for someone who has been in the game for six weeks,” she said. “It was a great
campaign.” Given the tight race provincially, Huntington admitted she thought of what could have been. “It was like, wow, I would have had the balance of power had I stayed in, but you never know and it’s too late to look back,” she said. “Personally, I think a minority government will be healthy for this province. I feel very strongly about that.”

NDP message fails to resonate in riding Bruce Reid disappointed and surprised that so many Delta South voters supported Liberals Delta South
VOTES SANDOR GYARMATI

Bruce Reid is feeling a little sad for Delta South after so many voters switched back to the Liberals. “I was hoping there would be a better response in our riding to the needs of people that the Liberals were neglecting, so I’m feeling a little bit down about that,” said the Delta South NDP candidate who finished third in Tuesday’s provincial election. “But then on the other hand, provincially, I think we can still see some of those issues addressed. I am a little bit surprised at the overall support for the Liberals and a bit confused as to why so many people don’t see what the Liberals are doing.” Reid noted that pundits have said Delta South is a strong Liberal riding, and although the NDP vote total increased by five per cent from 2013, he’s disap-

Saying it was still a positive experience to run, the first-term Delta school trustee is concerned about another election possibly having to take place soon. Reid also said he won-
ders what the future holds for independents. “I’m thinking the independents after this election will kind of disappear in our riding. It was obviously something that was driven by Vicki Huntington. On the other hand, they (Nicholas Wong) still had a lot of resources and people supporting them. But the whole concept of inde-
pendents is really difficult for most people to grasp and provincially it doesn’t really look like something that could catch on.” Green candidate Larry Colero is also disappointed his party didn’t do better than nine per cent of the popular vote in Delta South. He said he’s also surprised Wong didn’t have a stronger showing. Colero considers the

new bridge a major issue, saying the current design of the span won’t make it possible for rapid transit as promised by Liberal Ian Paton. It means rapid transit won’t be coming in these parts “for many decades to come.” As far as what’s next for the bridge project, Colero believes there’s still time to stop it but that’s not likely. “Certainly the Greens
would not support the Liberals pushing through with it but the big unknown is the NDP and where they stand on the bridge. I am not very hopeful an alternative to the bridge will be found and I think they’re going to press ahead with the current plans to build this overly expensive and impractical bridge,” he said. “It’s just going to bring more cars on the road and leave future generations with $8 billion in debt and what’s been said to be $3.5 billion in interest. I’m not very hopeful it will be stopped because I suspect the NDP will support the bridge because of the jobs, but those jobs are paid for by tax dollars,” Colero added. Saying that running in the election was an exhausting but rewarding experience, the B.C. Action Party’s Errol Sherley, who finished last, said turmoil and another election seems likely if the Liberals only have a minority. He added he thinks Wong did well for an independent.

Student Vote gives voice to the next generation Nicholas Wong is choice in Delta South, while Horgan and the NDP win big province-wide Delta South
VOTES SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Had it been up to local students, Nicholas Wong would have won Delta South in Tuesday’s provincial election. Twenty-four public elementary and high schools, plus several private schools, in Delta participated in Student Vote, which took place Monday, the day before the election. The vote here had independent candidate Wong edging Liberal Ian Paton by a mere 10 votes. Province-wide, students elected John Horgan and the NDP to form government by a wide margin, while Liberal Leader Christy Clark lost her seat. Students also had Andrew Weaver and the Greens claim 14 seats. It was the fourth pro-
vincial-level Student Vote project conducted in B.C. with hundreds of schools participating. Participating schools had students learn about government and the electoral process, research the parties and platforms, discuss relevant issues and cast ballots for the official election candidates in their ridings. It was a busy afternoon Monday at Beach Grove Elementary, one of the participating schools, with students in grades 4 to 7 casting ballots. The students also took on other roles to mirror what really goes on during the election, including greeters, scrutineers, voting officers and even the media. Describing it as a cool learning experience, Grade 5 student Liam Murray voted for Wong, noting he represented the best of what all the candidates had to offer. Classmate Delcan Skinner said it’s good for
kids to have a chance to participate in the process even though their results won’t be counted. “It’s nice for us to learn about all of this and I was talking to my dad about it. He said he learned nothing about politics when he was a kid and now we get to learn so much.” Skinner said he voted for the NDP’s Bruce Reid. Classmate Olivia Dealbuquerque said it was cool being part of the process. She voted for the Green’s Larry Colero, partly because he didn’t use campaign signs, but also because he has a strong education background. Kaelyn Burnett was in the student media, saying it was fascinating to take photos and interview young voters. Bodhi Coleman said the NDP and Reid were his ideal choice. He added young people need to be aware how important it is to vote. Coordinating the vote

Another big voter turnout in Delta South Exit polls shows all sorts of reasons why 68% of riding’s voters turned up to cast ballots this time Delta South
VOTES SANDOR GYARMATI & IAN JACQUES Residents in Delta South made their way to the polls in big numbers on Tuesday with more than 23,500 votes cast or just over 68 per cent of the riding’s eligible voters. That was similar to 2013 when 23,894 votes were cast in the riding, which gave Delta South the third highest voter turnout in the province. On Tuesday afternoon, the Optimist stopped by polling stations in Tsawwassen (South Delta Recreation Centre) and Ladner (Ladner Community Centre) to ask voters what issues brought them out to the polls. Not surprisingly, the answers were mixed. In Tsawwassen, Peter Harms said there hasn’t been a really big issue that he can think of galvanizing
South Deltans. “I haven’t been following it too much because I was out of the country for four months, but I can’t think of any issue. Ian (Paton) is the only one that I know personally. All the other ones, I don’t know them,” said Harms. Graham Witcher said mega projects such as the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project and Terminal 2 are big issues for the riding. As far as the five candidates, Witcher said, “We’ve been so well served by Vicki Huntington. Whoever follows her, she’s a hard act to follow.” Glen Dawe also said he was a big Huntington fan, but likes Paton as a candidate this time around. He also likes the idea of having a bridge built here. While Wendy Scott said they always make sure to vote, this election has made it challenging to choose. “I think for us it’s hard in that having an inde-

votes, and so the Liberals get in rather than a different party,” Scott said. “That has been hard on our mind. The other quandary
we have, because we’re fairly new to this area, is why does Delta need an independent. Then also, the Green Party with their leader, from what I’ve read about him and seen, he’s very articulate. I like his beliefs but how can he govern if he only ends up getting one seat?” In Ladner, Donna Gibson said residents have enjoyed wonderful representation in the community and that she was looking for the same. When asked how she voted, she said it was safe to assume she supported Nicholas Wong. Michael Hambrook had no problems stating that he voted for Wong. “I can’t vote for Christy (Clark). Certainly some of Vicki’s ideas played a factor in my decision, but for me it was who I felt was the best option for Delta South,” he said. Karen Taipalus said she voted because she was proud to live in a country that has a fair and demo-
cratic process. “Voting is something that should not be taken for granted. If you don’t vote, you don’t have a say,” she said. “This was a hard one for me. I went to the all-candidates and pretty much all the candidates shared similar views, so for me it came down to do I vote for a party or do I vote for the candidate?” Cindy Garbe stated that she voted to get Clark out. “Transit is terrible here. I feel for any students who live here and want to attend UBC because it is not even accessible. And with the new bridge, where is the SkyTrain options?” she asked. John Kobilan also voted for change. “I’ll tell you this, the Liberals can jump in a lake. It started with the mess at our hospital and the same thing is happening with the bridge project. It doesn’t make sense. We voted Liberal before, but we voted for change this time,” he said.

hen Vicki Huntington announced back in January that she wouldn’t be seeking a third term as Delta South MLA, it looked as if she was handing the riding back to the Liberals. On Tuesday, voters in the provincial election confirmed that widely-held suspicion. That’s not meant to take anything away from a victorious Ian Paton, who is full marks for the win. The popular civic politician has a lifetime of community service and ran a strong, positive campaign, a combination that obviously resonated with voters. It also didn’t hurt that he was running with the right party as prior to 2009, this riding had been represented by a Liberal for 18 years and by Socreds before that. It would take something extraordinary for Delta South not to send a candidate representing the right-of-centre party to Victoria, and that something was Huntington, who is no longer around, at least not politically. Many of her supporters lined up behind Nicholas Wong, who is intelligent, passionate and well versed on the issues, but in the end this election proved how difficult it is for an independent. Delta South’s independent camp leaked votes to the Liberals (up eight per cent from 2013), Greens (up nine per cent) and NDP (up five per cent) as it struggled to keep a diverse collection of voters under one tent. Of the 31 independent candidates that ran in Tuesday’s provincial election, only three broke the 1,000-vote barrier and Wong’s 6,050 votes were double the next highest total. Those are impressive numbers by almost any measure, except, of course, when compared to what transpired here in the past. Tuesday’s vote could well spell the end of the independent movement in Delta South, although that largely depends on Paton. The newly-minted MLA has vowed to speak up on behalf of the community, even if such a stance is contrary to his own party, which would further endear him to voters and make the need for an alternative voice a moot point. That kind of speculation is for another day, if at all, as today is a time to congratulate our new MLA and wish him well as he embarks on another chapter in his political career.
Volunteering connects new arrival with the community
S
ince this column must be submitted a few days before it is printed, I don’t know who was successful in the provincial election as I write. But I will take this opportunity to thank Vicki Huntington and her staff for the years of service in South Delta, where she has always spoken for the citizens in a professional and responsible manner, and at the same time avoided all the pitfalls of politics, allowing her to retire with an enviable record of service. Best wishes, Vicki, and thanks for all you’ve done for South Delta. Recently the Optimist printed a section highlighting volunteer organizations in our community and that brought back some memories I would like to share with you. Moving here from Toronto 25 years ago, we knew no one and basically felt like strangers in our country. There are lots of activities that you can get involved in and numerous ways that you can invest your time but it wasn’t until I was asked to join the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen that I actu-

ally felt like I was part of the community. As a member, I met local business people from every type of occupation. We pooled our knowledge and used those abilities to assist the community in so many ways it’s hard to even list. Most readers will be aware of the Rotary Water Works at Diefenbaker Park and the landscaped area at the plaza on 56th Street, but we did much more. We worked weekends to build several playgrounds, the upper pool at Diefenbaker Park, new cages for OWL, Christmas lights at the hospital, etc., etc. That was locally, and interna-
tionally we sponsored local students to live overseas with other Rotarian families for a year. To see the change in these students after their year away was truly astounding. Through Rotary International, every Rotarian has participated in the effort to eliminate polio, which is particularly satisfying to help end this debilitating disease. What I’m saying with all of this is that there are organizations throughout our community who have much to offer young folks with brawn and brains or older folks with experience and time that could be a rewarding experience for all. What we accomplished at Rotary is still a source of pride for me, and the friendships and community involvement that came from being a Rotarian are still part of my life. Have some spare time? Need a purpose? Would you like to meet a group of like-minded people? Volunteer — it’s good for you. Coin flip decides which way to mark ballot that can’t be split
Editor: In this week’s provincial election, I fell prey, for one of the first times, to a vestige of our colonial past. In Canadian provincial and federal elections, you only get to mark one “X” but you are actually casting three votes - one for your local representative, another for the party that you want to govern and a third for the leader of that party who will become the premier (or prime minister in a federal election). What if the person I want for my local representative is not from the same party that I want to govern or from a different party from the person I want to be premier? Or vice versa? Either way, I am forced to vote for someone, or a political party, that I do not want
in office or to govern, in order to get someone that I do want in office or to govern. Canadian municipal elections offer a more democratic franchise as you are able to mark one “X” for your mayor and multiple “Xs” for your councillors, provided that you are not under a municipal ward system, and even then you get two votes. Our Canadian head of state is actually the Queen of England, represented by the governor general and then by extension the lieutenant governors of the provinces. They are the un-elected executive branch of our government. Although they are largely ceremonial posts, they do have real constitutional powers, even if they are
not exercised or they are delegated by convention to the prime minister and premier. For example, they must sign a piece of legislation before it becomes law. This fact then puts the prime minister or premier in a perpetual state of a potential conflict of interest. As the “first among equals,” the prime minister or premier has a legislative seat in their home constituency. At the same time they also exercise many of the executive powers that belong to the head of state - the interests of the nation. Well, what if the interests of the nation mean something negative for the home constituency? Or what if the PM or premier does something for their home constituency that is
not in the best interest of the nation? One way to solve this dilemma is to take the municipal form of government and elect the prime minister or premier on a separate ballot than the one for the local representative. This could be done by restoring the de-facto executive powers to the governor general and their provincial counterparts and then to elect them. Yes, this would be more like the electoral system in the United States, and yes, this would be more democratic. Something tells me however, those with a vested interest in maintaining our colonial state like it just how it is. So on Tuesday, as I was truly divided. I flipped a coin and let it decide. Surgery cancelled after patient had already been sedated
Editor: After six months waiting, I got the miracle phone call for knee replacement surgery. I limped into the Surrey Memorial Hospital where a kindly staff gave me a gown, laid me on a bed, hooked me up to an IV, asked me a million questions, had me sign a lot of forms, handed me a marker pen to sign the appropriate knee, gave me a sedative and told me to wait. Three hours later, they told us to go home. The previous surgery ran overtime and the OR was now unavailable. The surgeon’s office is trying hard to re-schedule me, but something needs to change. This was a shattering experience for my wife and me. Curt Jantzen
Bruno Bruno is a two year old 70lb male pit bull mix who’s favorite thing to do is cuddle! He has a medium energy level, so a good walk a day followed by a snuggle session is all he needs! After proper introductions, Bruno gets along well with other dogs, big and small, and he’d prefer they let him be The Boss. He has completed a ten day training course and has mastered his leash work and introduction to other dogs (what a good boy!) Cats are not his cup of tea, but Bruno definitely LOVES humans and can be quite the cuddle monster! Like many dogs, small children make him nervous, so an adult/teen only household would be ideal. He is perfect in his crate and totally housebroken. As with all of our dogs, Bruno is neutered and up to date on all shots and vaccines. C & Alberta Guide Dogs are on the lookout for foster families to become volunteer puppy trainers. A puppy lives with a foster family from the time its seven weeks old until it moves on to advanced training as early as 15 to 16 months old, explains director of breeding and puppy training Linda Thornton. “It’s a 24/7 commitment,” she says, adding the program is supervised and the organization covers costs like food, vet expenses and equipment. The Delta-based organization relies on volunteers to raise puppies that are working towards becoming guide dogs for the visually-impaired or autism support dogs. Although being a volunteer is a big time commitment, it’s also very rewarding, says Thornton, noting
volunteers get to meet people who end up receiving the dogs. Obedience training takes place in Ladner. There are weekly sessions for new puppies until they’re about five months old and biweekly sessions for older dogs, says Thornton, who spoke to the Optimist at a training class last month. Dogs also meet with puppy training supervisor Matthias Lenz at least once a month outside the class setting, she says, noting it could be downtown or a mall, “to make sure all that socialization is happening.” It’s very important volunteers take their dog, which has legal rights of access with its jacket on, out to various places, she says. “Their job is to take them to restaurants, to malls, to anywhere they can think of.” She says puppies are generally placed with volunteers who aren’t work-

“I know that they change people’s lives,” she says. Hundt says it’s hard to give them up when it’s time for the dogs to move on to their next stage of training but likens it to when your kids go off to university.
“These guys have a whole life ahead of them to do good for somebody,” she says. Thornton says those interested in becoming a volunteer puppy trainer can come to an information session and then to an obedience class or two to see what goes on and talk to those already involved. After that comes a home interview and, if accepted, waiting for a puppy. Contact BC & Alberta Guide Dogs at 604-9404504, info@bcguidedog. com or visit http://bcandalbertaguidedogs.com. - BC & Alberta Guide Dogs has also recently launched a movie in honour of International Guide Dog Day. Available to be seen online (http://bcandalbertaguidedogs.com/ news-events/our-movie/), the film covers the whole life of a guide dog from beginning to end. “I think it gives everybody a perspective on what the drill is,” says Thornton.

National Hospice Palliative Care Month—May 2017 Know Your Options . . . “Speak Up” The majority of people prepare for their financial future and yet resist preparing for their future health care. People are often afraid to talk about end of life care because it’s about the unknown. You can’t know how or when that will be, but you can talk about what’s important to you, both now and in the future. Life is fragile and at any time, you could be unable to communicate what you may want (or do not want) for medical care and interventions. Who will speak for you? How would you want to be cared for? The Delta Hospice Society is calling on families to conquer their fear and commit to learning about protecting your loved ones and your own health care future. Document and communicate your wishes and values with your loved ones and your doctor. Decide what is important to you so you can help influence your future quality of life. To learn more about advanced care planning, visit “Speak Up” at http:// www.advancecareplanning.ca/ Hospice Palliative Care is about living your life — living it well, and living well right to the end.

Volunteers take part in the shredding event at ReMax Progroup Tsawwassen.
Shredders raise over $3,000 The turnout at the recent shredding event for Reach Child and Youth Development Society held at Re/Max Progroup Tsawwassen was impressive despite the weather. At the end of the threehour event, 4.6 tonnes of paper were shredded on site, saving the equivalent of 78 trees, 1,596 gallons of oil, 29,400 gallons of water, 16,800 KW of energy and 12.6 cubic yards of landfill space. The event also raised $3,115 for Reach’s Building for Children Together
Project. Re/Max Progroup’s Bob Cooke extended a big thank you to the community for caring so much about Reach. “We very much appreciate our dedicated volunteers who pushed a lot of paper to ShredWise truck operator Sasha Szymczak to benefit kids with special needs,” Cooke said. “Cars kept streaming into the parking lot full of documents to be shredded and volunteers were out in the rain, undeterred, greeting donors with smiles and
a helping hand,” added Reach fundraising manager Kristin Bibbs. “We are very grateful to ReMax Progroup Tsawwassen and Raymond James South Delta Financial Group for partnering to host this successful event.” The next shredding event will be held this fall in Ladner at Raymond James | South Delta Financial Group. All funds from the shredding events benefit Reach’s new children’s centre, currently under construction in Ladner.

Make your next 100 days count
U.S. President Donald Trump recently completed his first 100 days in office. It is viewed as an indication of what the rest of the presidency will look like. We were deluged with reports tracking how many executive orders were signed and what legislation was or wasn’t passed. There was a frantic effort to get points on the board before the buzzer. It was a favourite topic for late night comedy, and opinions about what was accomplished ranged from prolific to pathetic. The first 100 days of the presidency is an interesting phenomenon. It isn’t really that long — yet it is. One hundred days from today is Aug. 20. What are you going to do with your

next 100 days? What skills could you improve? What books could you read? What relationships could you enhance? What great goals could you dream and accomplish between now and Aug. 20? Where does God fit into your plans for the next 100 days?

What if your next 100 days changed or defined what the rest of your life would look like? In Psalm 90:4-7, King David prayed: “Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered — how fleeting my life is. You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath. We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it. And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you.” Let’s think about it and make the next 100 days count.

Tsawwassen’s Harrison Gough earns spot in all-expenses paid program

Harrison Gough already knew he was headed to a new school in September. It just won’t be the same one as his Cliff Drive Elementary classmates. The Grade 7 student’s transition into high school has taken an exciting twist after earning a spot on the Whitecaps F.C. Residency’s U14 team. That means the goalkeeper from Tsawwassen will be attending Prince of Wales Secondary in Vancouver with his new teammates. The school is a short drive from the new National Soccer Development Centre at UBC where the Residency teams will be training. Gough becomes the first male player from South Delta in recent memory to be part of the prestigious all-expenses paid program that scours the entire country for talent. He earned one of two keeper positions on the U14 side after an intense three-day invitation only evaluation camp in Burnaby. He had been scouted playing for Coastal F.C.’s U13 team in the B.C. Premier Soccer League. “At the beginning, they put us into a room where they did measurements and vertical testing. Then we went outside where we did some sprint testing. There was also lots of passing drills too before the keepers were separated,” explained Gough. “The last day was a 11v11 game.” The tryouts concluded on a Thursday and Gough got the thrilling news five days later — via email. The family will receive more details in the coming weeks but the plan is Gough will commute to school with his dad who works downtown. “I think it is still sinking in a little bit. He has a list of goals and one of them was to make the Whitecaps Residency and he did it,” smiled his mom Barb. “It was just a privilege to be at the tryouts with all those amazing kids. “(He trains) in monsoons and mud and honestly has never said he doesn’t want to come to practice. He really does love it. I really see it as a parent. I don’t have to pull him out of bed.” The Goughs are grateful for their son’s progress through the former

Tsawwassen’s Harrison Gough will be attending Prince of Wales Secondary in Vancouver for his Grade 8 year in September after earning a roster spot on the Whitecaps Residency U14 team. Tsawwassen Soccer Club, especially his sessions with goalkeeper coach Helmut Wiebe. It was back in U9 when Harrison’s coach asked him if he wanted to play in net and he discovered his passion for it. At the same time, he also continued as an out player which is vital for goalkeeper development. “Eighty-five percent of a goalkeeper is as an out player and I have talked to many parents about that over the years,” said South Delta United technical director Mark Rogers who has been working with Gough since U6. “We have been very deliberate about that where Harry got the opportunity to play out of net as much as possible.
“The biggest question when he left for Coastal was how often would he get to continue that? He is still getting that balance where he doesn’t neglect his feet. (Germany’s) Manuel Neuer is arguably the best goalkeeper in the world and was as an out player until he was 14. People get too worked up in Canada about playing positions at a young age. Harry is a prime example of that.” Rogers added it’s Gough’s passion for the game and work ethic that compliments his athleticism and potential. “Harry deserves a lot of credit. With the two clubs combining at the time, he decided to stay and put a real shift in. He looked for

any extra (training) environment he could find and his parents are a good example of letting the kid decide. If it doesn’t come from him it will be a short shelf life,” continued Rogers. “It’s really worth noting when someone has worked hard and put in that extra time. Too many people these days are looking for short cuts. We are all so super proud of him.” Gough is currently winding down his season with Coastal F.C. He made the BCPSL team last spring after attending the Intake evaluation sessions. He trains out of South Surrey Athletic Park three times a week and games are played on weekends until mid-June.
Congratulations

Quinn Ridley is thriving on the ice and on the floor. The Tsawwassen teen is in Penticton this weekend after being selected for B.C. Hockey’s U15 Cup. The four-day event, at the Okanagan Hockey Training Centre, features on-ice combine testing, practices and series of games with the camp invites being divided into eight teams. Ridley, a forward, will be suiting up for the Delta Hockey Academy’s Bantam Varsity team in September. When he is not on the ice, Ridley is continuing a family tradition by excelling in lacrosse. Last week, he was named to Team B.C.

Ridley comes from a long line of athletes and takes pride in his grandfather Larry Henry — a five time Mann Cup Lacrosse winner as well as an inductee into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame. “I owe a lot to my coaches, parents and grandparents for helping me get here,” said Ridley. “It’s very hard to play two sports at a high level these days and they have always encouraged me to keep playing both sports as long as I can to see how it all plays out.”

to synthesize vitamin D from sunlight. Vitamin D also needs to be activated in the kidney before it can be used by the body and this function also decreases with age. Finally, elderly people who are homebound are less likely to get outdoor exercise and activity. Researchers have suggested that it takes up to 30 minutes of sun exposure twice a week to make a sufficient amount of vitamin D from sunlight.

Years ago doctors were mainly concerned about vitamin D deficiency in children. Foods were fortified with vitamin D to prevent the bone disease called rickets. Now we know that rickets was only the tip of the iceberg and that seniors are also at high risk for vitamin D deficiency. According to a recent study in the journal Age and Ageing, vitamin D deficiency may contribute to osteoporosis, muscle weakness, hip fractures, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, arthritis and poor general health in seniors.
How Much Vitamin D Do You Need? You need more vitamin D as you get older. According to the Food and Nutrition Board at the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies, an adequate intake of vitamin D up until age 50 is 1,000 - 2,000 International Units (IU) for both men and women. Between age 50 and 70 the adequate daily intake is 3,000 IU for men and women. After age 70 the adequate intake is 4,000 IU for men and women. The bulbs we use at Hawaiian Beach help to activate Vitamin D. Visit us today.
Why Are Seniors at Risk? People over age 50 have an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency and the risk increases with age. As people age they lose some of their ability

Travel down the cleaning aisle of a store and you’ll be met with product after product designed for specialized cleaning. There are sprays for windows, cleansers for electronics, carpet-cleaning foams, and scouring solutions for tubs and showers. Although many of these are effective, the average person can rely on just one cleaning aid for a wide variety of tasks: vinegar. Vinegar can be used in various ways around the house: • Remove lime buildup. Vinegar is good for cleaning faucets and showerheads. Make a paste of one teaspoon of vinegar and two tablespoons of salt. Apply to sink fixtures and rub with a cloth. Fill a plastic baggie with vinegar and attach to the shower-

Add 1/2 cup white vinegar to the wash cycle. It will help loosen stains and brighten clothing. An added benefit is the acid will reduce static cling. • Disinfect cutting boards. by spraying them with straight vinegar, then rinsing to clean. • Clean the disposal. Make sure food residue doesn’t clog garbage disposals and lead to odour. Mix vinegar and baking soda in the drain and allow the bubbling action to remove built-up residue. Use a scrub brush for extra scouring. • Get streak-free win-
dows. Mix a 50-50 solution of vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Use to clean windows and other glass surfaces. Wipe away with a microfiber cleaning cloth so no lint is left behind. • Eradicate pet odour. Pour a little bit of vinegar into an empty litter box. Let stand for around 20 minutes, then rinse with cold water. Vinegar also can be used to blot pet stains on the carpet. • Banish water stains. Fix water stains and rings on wood furniture by mixing equal parts vinegar and olive oil. Use a soft cleaning cloth moving in the direction of the wood grain. Polish using a clean cloth. • Steer clear of using it on natural stone and marble as the acid could cause damage.

Planting a tree comes with many benefits sons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer.
Outdoor projects often top homeowners’ to-do lists in spring and summer. Planting trees around the yard is one popular project that can improve property value and benefit the environment. Why plant trees? There are plenty of rea-

Trees also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year. Getting started Visit a garden centre or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees increases the likelihood the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home. Look for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead or dormant branches. Select a spot that can make it easier for the tree
to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes. Planting the tree Now it is time to amend the soil. It’s not enough to enrich only the soil in the hole where the tree will be placed. Move out into a circular area beyond where the roots will start so they can expand and properly anchor the tree. The next method of success is to ensure the tree has a large enough hole to contain the existing root ball and allow for roots to expand. Better Homes and Gardens experts say to prepare a hole that is two to three times as wide as the root ball of the tree. Treat the root ball gently. If the roots are wrapped in burlap, remove the burlap or push it to the bottom of

Pitching in can cut home renovation costs projects are best left to the pros. For example, any projects that involves exposure to hazardous materials are risky and therefore best left to experienced labourers. However, many homeowners are capable of safely and effectively pulling cabinets from walls, removing flooring or knocking down drywall. Homeowners unsure of how to approach demolition tasks can ask their contractors to dem-
onstrate the proper technique so the demolition is done right and on time. • Salvage: Removing debris and items that will no longer be needed once the renovation is complete is another way homeowners can pitch in. Homeowners remodeling their kitchens may be replacing their existing stoves and refrigerators and hoping to donate these items. In such instances, driving the

Homeowners capable of pitching in on home renovation projects can save substantial amounts of money on labour costs. Home improvement projects can be expensive. While the size and complexity will affect how expensive it is, homeowners can expect to shell out a pretty penny when they renovate or remodel areas of their home. But renovation-minded homeowners need not reconsider their commitment to remodeling as there are various ways to cut the costs associated
with home improvement projects. One such way is for homeowners to pitch in and do some of the work themselves. Some estimates suggest labour will account for anywhere from 25 to 50 per cent of the overall cost of the project, so it’s no surprise that homeowners can save themselves substantial amounts of money by doing some of the work themselves.
Homeowners who intend to do some of the labour should discuss this plan with contractors. While it’s best to leave the most complicated parts of a project to the professionals, homeowners can pitch in during the following phases: • Demolition: Demolition involves more than picking up a sledgehammer and swinging away. Some demolition
items to the donation site or arranging for them to be picked up rather than taken off the premises by the contractor or his employees can cut labour costs. • Cleanup: Homeowners also can save costs by cleaning up after the contractors at the end of each workday. Speak with the contractor about cleaning up the site each day, asking him or her what can be discarded.

Horsing Around in Delta LIFE AT UNICORN STABLES By Chris Turner
I don’t remember a time in my life where horses were not a part of it. My sister started riding when I was three years old, and I guess that’s when the seed was planted. I always wanted to go to the barn, watch her ride, and of course, feed the ponies treats.
Rider Chris on horse Piper
I started riding at Unicorn Stables when I was seven. That was fourteen years ago, and that barn has become a second home for me. I have been

accommodated and respected there at all points of my riding career, from being a kid riding quiet lesson ponies, to leasing and competing. There is no where else I would ride. There is nowhere else I would keep my horse either. Piper is the sixteen hand-high, short-legged love of my life. I bought him when I was fourteen and he was four. My family had our own property by then, but every week I would trailer out to Unicorn to have lessons. Both Piper and I were young, and the experts there helped us reach our potential without stressing either of us out. When we started competing, it was the same feeling. I struggled with anxiety (and still do), but the coaches at Unicorn made me feel at ease. Piper and I went on to win and place at many shows in a few different disciplines. The staff

About a year and a half after I sold him, Piper went blind. His new owners, at a loss about what to do, gave him back to me. He lives at Unicorn, and the care he receives is the same as the other competition horses. He loves letting the kids brush him and pat him, and I can’t imagine him living anywhere else.

And then life went on. I felt my horse could do better things with a more ambitious rider, and so when I was seventeen I sold him. Unicorn graciously hired me on as full time staff so I could still be with the horses I knew all my life. I got to see Piper on the weekends, but I missed him.

BROWN, Jesse Christian December 10, 1980 - March 22, 2017 Jesse Christian Brown, age 36, passed suddenly in New Westminster, British Columbia.
away
Jesse was born in Richmond and raised in Ladner where he graduated from South Delta Secondary School. Jesse spent much of his later life in Saskatchewan which he adopted as his home away from home. He had many hopes but struggled with the drug addiction that eventually took his life. Jesse was a well-spoken man with a kind heart and a gentle spirit who touched the heart of everyone he met. Possessing a charming smile, sparkling eyes and infectious laughter which belied his mischievous nature, he could be counted on to enliven a gathering of friends and family alike.
SHERRELL, Roy
.
It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our father at the age of 85 in Ladner, B.C. on May 5th, 2017. He is survived by his daughter, Mariann (Doug), son’s, Ernie (Dory), Danny (Colleen), 8 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, sister, Adeline (Abe) and brother Albert (Lorraine) and a lifetime of family and friends. He has now joined his beloved wife Lorraine and son Billy. Our family would like to thank Maria for her patience and understanding while caring for our father. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
He will be remembered for his adoration of nature and animals as well as his love of art, history and music which lives on through his daughter. Jesse was predeceased by his loving mother Jackie in 2013. He is survived by his daughter, father David Sr, grandmother “Nana” Lorraine, brother David Jr (Angela), sisters Shawne (Peter) and Jennifer (Adam), as well as many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and close friends. A Celebration of Life service will be held on May 27, 2017, 1 pm - 3 p.m. at the Fishermen’s Hall in Ladner. Guests are asked to bring a lily (his favourite flower) to plant in memory of Jesse. Appreciation goes out to all who have offered their condolences and sympathies thus far. “It’s your responsibility to make the most of the time that’s given to you” ~ Jesse
