Firefighters given top marks Third-party review shows enhanced medical response program adds value to the system

ing they have been able to utilize their enhanced skills when extricating a patient from a situation that is not accessible to BC Ambulance Service, allowing for a faster medical response. “Delta’s emergency medical responder system will always be viewed as adding value to the system of emergency support,” said Dow. “It is not intended to devalue the critical role that BC Ambulance Service plays in this municipality.” Mayor Lois Jackson and several councillors praised the department and staff for working hard to get the program off and running so successfully. “The people that benefit from this enhanced training are, of course, the people of Delta and I’m very proud of that,” said Jackson. “It is amazing. We have not received any complaints. That shows the depth of learning that the firefighters have. This was a huge team effort.” The fire chief is encouraged by the program’s success. “This program has demonstrated that Delta Fire and Emergency Services is committed to being a progressive, responsive change agent and partner in the provision of emergency pre-hospital services in the province,” Copeland said. “We are now being contacted by other municipalities who are looking into this due to the success of the Delta program.”

The Delta Fire Department’s enhanced medical training program has received top marks after the release of a third-party review. At a recent meeting of Delta council, fire Chief Dan Copeland presented an overview of the review, which outlined some of the key findings, lessons learned and steps ahead to make the program more effective. “We have built an even greater relationship with Fire Chief Dan paramedics Copeland and overall the program has been very successful,” Copeland told council. Last June, the department completed its first year of providing enhanced pre-hospital care to accident and fire victims. After undergoing the necessary training, firefighters are now able to administer pain relief medication, take blood pressure, use pulse oximeters, administer IVs and provide airway management. Following the one-year mark of the program, the Corporation of Delta commissioned Dr. Martha Dow, a researcher and consultant working in the areas of public safety, education and organizational change, to complete a third-party review. In the review, Dow praises the efforts of Delta firefighters, say-

Walking back into history

SDSS and DSS students reflect on two-week trip to Vimy Ridge, Auschwitz IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

For some, it was a chance to see Europe for the first time. For others, it was an opportunity to relive history and learn about a time that forever changed the make-up of Canada and the world. There was, however, one common factor among the 80-plus students from South Delta and Delta secondary schools that went to Europe for the Vimy Ridge anniversary ceremony in April — they all came back forever changed by the experience of their emotional twoweek journey. The trip through Education First tours focused on the 100th anniversary ceremony April 9 of the battle of Vimy Ridge. In addition, students visited two Canadian cemeteries and the Auschwitz extermination camp. SDSS teacher Keith Donaldson said he has always had a passion for Canada’s military heritage and has passed that onto his students. “We had a very strong interest among the students and in all, 37, a nice mix of grade 10 to 12 students, both male and female, went on the trip,” Donaldson said. “As an educator, I believe the trip was critical because the battle of Vimy Ridge has always had this central position in the evolution of Canada’s national identity. This trip gave us

A group of Delta Secondary students spent an emotional two weeks in Europe. an opportunity to really relive that and capture that moment in time, but the trip as a whole offered us the opportunity to walk grounds of huge historical significance. Having that opportunity to make that physical connection to the past is huge for students.” He said everyone was in awe of the April 9 ceremony. “The sheer magnitude of the number of people there, the quality of the ceremony itself, it was amazing,” he said. “Towards the end of the trip going through the streets of Berlin and then going to Auschwitz — we all walked away with a new found understanding.” Grade 11 student Grayson Read-Friedmann said the trip afforded an opportunity to relive history first-hand as opposed to just reading about it in a text book. “At the ceremony, seeing 25,000 Canadians on

a little piece of soil honouring our soldiers who sacrificed everything for us was pretty powerful,” he said. “Walking through the streets of these cities and you see where people’s livelihoods were destroyed, it makes you appreciate how fortunate we are to be born in this day and age with everything we have.” Grade 11 student Olivia Ryder saw the trip initially as a chance to visit Europe, but ended up coming away with a greater educational experience. “Auschwitz was a huge, life-changing moment. It is such a different feeling, you feel so upset with humanity. Compared to how other people have it, we live a pretty good life here in Canada,” Ryder said. Grade 12 student Daniel Degoutiere said it was impossible to put into words the emotions of visiting the holocaust memo-

rial in Berlin. “I’m not the type to cry and I didn’t, but it could have got to that point,” he said. “I’d like to think I have a greater appreciation for the different perspectives of people around the world and not just Canadians back then or Germans back then, but people everywhere.” DSS students recalled similar feelings and experiences. Grade 12 student Mackenzie Galbraith said the welcome they received at the April 9 ceremony was amazing. “When we got up there you could see what the landscape looked like, you could see where the shells were fired and it was just very awe-inspiring,” she said. “The ceremony itself, a once in a lifetime experience. It was pretty emotional. You could definitely feel people connecting together during those moments. To be at

the place where so many lives were lost and then to meet at that spot 100 years later with your fellow Canadians is just something unforgettable.” Grade 11 student Christian Thomsen summed up the trip by saying, “It was the best of times and the worst of times. “There were a lot of emotional times that hit us, especially the cemetery and also Auschwitz,” Thomsen said. “Afterwards people, they weren’t so much crying, but they were left speechless, including myself, we couldn’t put into words what we had just saw. The entire time I was thinking what were the people 100 years ago thinking while they were taking this ridge? Did they know they would be making history? I was just honoured and humbled by the sacrifice that they made.” DSS teacher John Powell knows it was a trip that will remain with the students for the rest of their lives. “I don’t think there were any students who didn’t have a little tear in their eyes and were not emotional during the ceremonies, so that said a lot,” Powell said. “It makes you think, we have to hope that we never experience another war like that. I know the students all felt connected, felt connected to the history and the experience of it all.”

The Corporation of Delta ranks seventh among Lower Mainland municipalities when it comes to making it easy for residential developers, according to a recent survey released by the Fraser Institute. New Homes and Red Tape in British Columbia: Residential Land-Use Regulation in the Lower Mainland ranked 19 municipalities based on data compiled from area homebuilders. According to the survey, the City of Vancouver was the most heavily regulated municipality followed by West Vancouver and Surrey. The least regulated was the City of Langley followed by Pitt Meadows and New Westminster. “We appreciate any of these studies either from the industry or people like the Fraser Institute. We are always looking at ways we can have the approvals done quicker,” said Delta chief administrative officer George Harvie.

FILE PHOTO

A Fraser Institute report ranked Delta seventh out of 19 Lower Mainland municipalities in terms of residential development bureaucracy. “Certainly we have used computerized forms now which saves people time and they can make changes and get things back to us quicker, but there is room where we can always improve. “I think the biggest one that will have an impact on having approvals made more quickly and efficiently will be our zoning bylaw, which will be heading out shortly to the public for information and a public hearing. The current zoning bylaw is very old and by having it updat-

ed it will save people from going through a process of rezoning, so that should help quite a bit.” Mayor Lois Jackson said Delta is working hard to cut red tape and allow developers to get on with their projects sooner. “There are so many codes and regulations these days, so it can be difficult. We also have to ensure that everything is followed properly and done efficiently. I’m pleased to see where we rank, but we can always do better.”

Supply can’t match industrial demand

Demand for industrial space is expected to continue to raise prices and keep vacancy rates near historic lows in Delta, according to Avison Young. In its latest industrial land overview report, the commercial real estate firm notes that while Delta’s industrial market remained active last year with 45 transactions valued at a near record $233 million, there are few options for those businesses seeking space in excess of 75,000 square feet. The report found that despite a limited number of properties being transacted in Delta’s industrial market since last summer, some large leases were recorded in the Nordel, Tilbury and Annacis Island areas. will remain two of the most desired markets for tenants and owneroccupiers alike,” the report states.

In an associated news release, commercial real estate brokerage firm CBRE said Metro Vancouver’s industrial vacancy is just 2.2 per cent, while space completing this year is already 55 per cent preleased or sold. In 2015/2016, demand for industrial space was three times greater than total new space added to the market. “Surrey and Delta have attracted 64 per cent of the industrial demand in the region,” said Jason Kiselbach, an associate vice president with CBRE. “The South Fraser Perimeter Road has been a game changer.” A report last year from Metro Vancouver noted that between 2010 and 2015, the region lost 352 hectares of land designated for industrial use, mainly to commercial and residential developments. The regional supply of industrial land is under significant pressure for conversion but the demand is still increasing. A shortage is expected in the next 10 to 15 years.

ell, that was an entirely expected outcome. Civic officials will continue on the road to turning Delta into a city after only 1,506 voters, out of almost 70,000 Delta-wide, registered their opposition to the proposal through the recent alternative approval process. That doesn’t mean only 1,506 people dislike the idea of a name change from Corporation of Delta to City of Delta, it just means only that many voters took the time to visit one of five municipal buildings to register their displeasure. The alternative approval process is a bit like the old negative billing tactic employed by cable companies in that something will proceed unless you take steps to stop it, but given no one was going to be out of pocket due to Delta’s new official title, nor was a whole lot else going to change, the motivation to object was diminished. In fairness to the process, the threshold is set low at just 10 per cent, presumably because they know voters are an apathetic lot, but even that bar was much too high in this case. Just over two per cent signed a form, so I guess you could reason that almost 98 per cent of us either support the name change or don’t care enough to register an objection. That’s valid, but I do wonder whether a referendum question on next fall’s municipal election ballot would have produced a different result. We’re told the issue couldn’t wait as the name change is to be part of Canada Day celebrations this year, yet Delta’s been called a corporation for almost 140 years, so I suspect another 18 months wouldn’t have been a deal breaker. In the end, I think the name change is largely symbolic. It will help local government clarify its role to outsiders, which was the impetus for this whole exercise, but won’t impact our day-today life, although there’s an emotional component that shouldn’t be overlooked. It was telling that of the 1,506 people that expressed an objection, a whopping 96 per cent of them live in Ladner and Tsawwassen, which both identify as small towns, or at least communities, rather than cities. But thanks to the alternative approval process, it won’t be too long now before we can all say we live in the City of Delta.

lot of people are not aware of what actually goes into running for public office. It is a peculiar mix of putting things on hold, 16-hour work days and the surreal sensation of seeing your family name everywhere you look. It was also one of the best ways to experience our community that I could have ever imagined. Over the past three months, it was a joy to have innumerable conversations with people that I would not normally get the chance to speak to and attend events that I was previously unaware of. It was very reaffirming to find that almost everyone I met was invested in the place they choose to call home. More than that, I was awestruck by the kindness and courtesy of the people of South Delta. The bond of community, our shared goals and a collective love of this land were so apparent in every interaction I had. It was woven through every door I knocked on and I loved experiencing the mosaic of people and opinions that make up our neighbourhoods. An election campaign is about so much more than any individ-

ual. It requires a team of people who come together and work as one towards two beliefs: that the future can be better than the present and that we, as people, can do something about it. As a candidate, the real work is at the beginning of the campaign and it really comes down to crafting a vision that you believe in with such passion that other people can believe in it as well. It is like a fire in that it starts small and requires care and attention to build on. I was blessed to share that passion with some of the most amazing people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. In the beginning, it was Phil, Bernie, Inger, Carmen, Camille, my family and

my partner, Lindsey, who fueled the campaign. From there, it grew and took a life of its own as more and more people took part. After a certain point, it was no longer mine. I may have been carrying the torch, but it belonged to anyone who wanted it. For that reason, I wonder why people think that getting elected somehow grants you a position of power. I cannot see it as anything other than an obligation to all those who put their faith in you and to the community that you have stewardship over. Your decisions are not your own because you make them on behalf of everyone you represent. I was lucky enough to be born in a time and place that allowed me to take a stand for what I believe in and fight for it without prosecution. Freedom of speech and our democracy are powerful, but fragile, tools. With their aid, we can build a better future. All it takes is love for people and for our home and the belief that we can do it. Community advocate Nicholas Wong ran as an independent candidate in Delta South in last week’s provincial election. He finished second with more than 6,000 votes.

No vote that’s cast is ever wasted

Editor: As all of B.C. sits and waits for the eventual outcome of the recent provincial election, a thought on what some term a wasted vote. Logically, there cannot be such a thing as a wasted vote. If a voter exercises his or her right as guaranteed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, then the vote was not wasted. If the voter’s choice of candidate

did not garner sufficient support to emerge a winner, then it is incumbent upon said candidate to better his or her campaign platform next time in order to attract sufficient support. As a person who has had the right and opportunity and certainly the privilege to have voted in every federal, provincial and municipal election since the 1950s, but not always backing the winning can-

didate or party, it bothers me those who claim their vote was wasted fail to see that by so doing, they are dishonouring the names and actions of those Canadians who stood firm in the face of turmoil and defended democracy here and abroad. These people ought to hang their heads in shame and pray for forgiveness from those who went before and gave their lives so that Canadians have the

right to vote. There is no such thing as a wasted vote and those who claim there is are simply poor losers. As a Canadian war veteran, it bothers me that far too many Canadians fail to exercise their right to vote. They, too, dishonour those who gave their lives in the defence of freedom and they, too, ought to hang their heads in shame and seek forgiveness. Bob Orrick

Editor: Delta Hospice Society requested the help of our Delta firefighters to help celebrate Nurses Week at the Irene Thomas Hospice. The Delta Firefighters Charitable Society turned up with great enthusiasm, cooking burgers on the barbecue and serving the team. Peter

Hospice.

Peter is a sweet two year old male Chihuahua mix who weighs around twelve pounds. He is a little shy, but very loving. Peter is perfectly crate trained, and feels very safe in there. As the world is still pretty scary, he gets nervous on walks and therefore we wouldn’t qualify him as “great” on leash yet. He is doing wonderfully with his housebreaking and hasn’t had an accident since the first day of arriving in his foster home! Other dogs give Peter confidence and he loves them! He is also good with cats. We think a home with other animals would be ideal for him learning to trust and feel safe, especially if the other animals are confident and comfortable. Because he is building his confidence, we don’t recommend a home with small rambunctious children in it. He has never been nippy, but we feel he may be overwhelmed in a loud and active household. Ideally a quiet and calm home with patient adults is where we think he would be happiest and really flourish. He is a low to medium energy dog, and while he won’t be running any marathons or long hikes, he could adjust to a few short walks a day or work up to several long walks weekly. He does want to be with people all the time, and his current foster is working on his separation anxiety and Peter is progressing very well! As with all our dogs, he is neutered and up to date on all shots and vaccines!

Community columnist left quite an impression on reader

Editor: The No. 1 reason for opening the Optimist has been to read what Ian Robertson has to say in his Community Comment column. His professional

research into controversial issues piqued my interest as he wrote in a way that I understood. He made me realize that replacing the tunnel with a bridge, traffic flow, power

lines, future development of agricultural lands, etc. are real. Robertson’s articles woke me up. As concerned Ladner and Tsawwassen residents,

we should become more involved if we want to preserve key features of our lifestyle. Best wishes to your new columnist. Wendy Stuart

tary kids to work and learn with teens at the new farm school. While Hawthorne’s students are already involved with many garden activities in their own extensive raised garden, Grade 2 teacher Susanne Bohmert felt the opportunity to work with older students and in a farm setting would only increase their interest and motivation to become stewards of our precious farming lands. The Delta School District initiative to engage elementary students at the farm was initiated by district principal Brooke Moore. Bohmert joined with Farm Roots teachers Tammy Veltkamp and Graham Harkley to plan the interactive day. The teens designed a scavenger hunt, which sent the groups running all over the farm, solving clues with their big buddies’ help, discovering farm tools, sliding down playground slides and venturing deep into woods. They also worked cooperatively to conduct chemical experiments on

With inclement weather and a slow start to the growing season all across the country, it is more important than ever to get involved in the local food movement and support local growers. Join staff and volunteers of Earthwise Society at the Rose & Crown Pub on Wednesday, May 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. for Eat, Drink & Be Local to learn why local and organic farming is so important for our jobs, our environment and the future of our region. In Delta, we are surrounded by fertile farmland. Despite this, B.C. imports 95 per cent of the fruit and nuts and 75 per cent of the vegetables that we consume. Produce from other provinces and countries translates into extensive food miles that decrease the nutritional value of our food and consume fossil fuels. Earthwise Society

grows organic food in Delta and Agassiz, and will be sharing the reasons to choose organic and local at the Rose & Crown Pub over lively discussion, drinks and free appies. and creation too. Once as the apostle Paul walked through the ancient city of Athens, he saw a monument set aside for the worship of an “unknown God.” People wanted to make certain that all the local gods were appeased so, just in case they missed one, they added an extra “altar” for worship… “just in case!” That’s the great thing about following in the footsteps of Jesus, we need not worry that we have “all our bases covered” — we are God’s children too. And in any moment of the day or night we can sing, “Jesus loves me this I know…”

And the fragrance of newly tended lawn … well, nothing beats it! While I’m mowing, I often catch myself singing — and as always, I don’t sing the “top 20,” rather I usually recall a hymn. Some of the hymns that rattle around in my head are “oldies” like In the Garden, but some are the newer hymns that are still being written today such as She Flies On. It’s at moments like

Son inspires mom’s book Marcotte’s visits to the Yukon spur children’s story about plane named Noah DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Tsawwassen children’s author Danielle Marcotte had a special inspiration for her latest book. She was inspired by her son to write Noah & Great Bear: An Adventure in the Yukon, a story geared towards four- to sevenyear-olds. Her son Alex, 32, grew up in Tsawwassen and now lives in the Yukon. He trained to become a pilot at Boundary Bay Airport, she said. “He learned to pilot before he learned to drive. He was 16 when he flew solo,” she said. She visits her son, who now works on the safety side of things in the flight industry, often in the Yukon. Marcotte describes that area of the country as a grandiose place that is beautiful and very diverse. Her new book is about a little airplane named Noah and his best friend, and pilot Great Bear, who carry out deliveries in the Yukon and are asked for their help to go save an injured husky. Marcotte said writing children’s books is something she’s always wanted to do. When she retired eight years ago from Radio-Canada she started to take courses on how to do that.

Danielle Marcotte has based her latest book in the Yukon where her 32-year-old son now lives. “I discovered it’s really an industry of its own.” Marcotte worked for the national broadcaster in Vancouver for over 30

years as a radio host, interviewing countless artists, political figures and citizens of all walks of life. Marcotte’s book was

illustrated by Francesca Da Sacco. Marcotte’s website (http://daniellesmarcotte. weebly.com) includes

information about her books (which have French versions she translated herself) and links to where they can be purchased.

Kilroe bringing Country Queens to KinVillage DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Celebrity impersonator Bonnie Kilroe is bringing her Country Queens show to the KinVillage Community Centre next weekend. She says the audience can expect to be wowed, have some big laughs and be completely entertained. “I don’t want people to be bored for one second. I want them to be thoroughly entertained.” Kilroe says she’ll perform as at least nine celebrities, including country music stars Loretta Lynn, Shania Twain, Reba McEntire, Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton.

“All the big hitters. All the legendary ladies, for sure,” she says. An award-winning entertainer with over 15 years of experience, Kilroe says there’s a lot of comedy to her Country Queens show and that she likes to interact with the audience. Kilroe says she’s always been a great imitator and got started imitating her relatives. She’s also done singing and celebrity telegrams as well as musical dinner theatre. “I always say accidents happen, seriously. Nobody thinks that, ‘I’m going to grow up to be a celebrity impersonator,’” she says with a laugh. “I wanted to be a singer.

I wanted to be an actress. I loved comedy. It really just kind of fell into place one day.” The show is set for 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 27 at KinVillage Community Centre, 5430-10th Ave., Tsawwassen. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for KinVillage members and $25 for non-members. Call 604-943-0225. Dinner tickets cost an additional $15.

Combat hip pain with these stretches Well on Your Way P.J. WREN

Hip pain. It’s something a lot of people suffer with, whether it’s from sitting too much, not sitting enough (I’m talking to all you endurance exercisers out there), arthritis, bursitis or even having the misfortune of having your hip bones abnormally shaped (yes, that’s a thing). I have suffered with hip pain in the past. Unfortunately, it’s common, but fortunately, there are a number of things we can do about it. First, and foremost, see a professional (like a physiotherapist or your doctor) and get a diagnosis, a plan of attack and start rehabili-

tating yourself. Don’t play the wait and see game. You know that game. We all play it with our health and in the end the body rarely comes out the winner. What are some of the muscular reasons why your hips can hurt? And are there stretches you can do at home to help avoid hip pain? To help me out with this column, I enlisted Travis Wolsey, local physiotherapist and owner of Sungod Sports and Orthopedic Clinics in North Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen Springs. He told me that some muscular reasons people encounter hip pain very rarely have to do with the hip itself. Instead, it’s the muscles surrounding our ol’ hips that are causing the problems. The first key muscle group people should be stretching are their hamstrings, the muscles behind their thighs. If the hamstrings are tight, this can cause the pelvis to tilt posteriorly, causing sciatic

nerve tethering (physio speak for compression) and excessive lower lumbar strain. How do you know if your hamstrings are tight? Simple, try to touch your toes by hinging through your hips (avoid rounding your back). If you can’t, add the recommended hamstring stretch into your daily routine (see Photo 1). The second muscle group you should stretch are your hip flexors, located in the front of the hips. The hip flexors can be both dominate and tight, which leads to increased lordosis in the spine and excess lumbar compression. Both are bad news for our hips. Photo 2 demonstrates a great stretch to help lengthen your hip flexors, and then I also suggest adding some focused glute work into your workout program to offset the strength ratio between the front and the back of the body. And, finally, tightness in the glutes will limit hip

Photo 2 Photo 1

Photo 4

Photo 3 mobility, which will then be accommodated for (because something’s got to give) by excessive sacroiliac joint and/or lumbar movement — showing that

having a tight a** is not always a good thing. Photo 3 hits those glute muscles, while Photo 4 hits the inner thigh grouping, another area Wolsey

likes to see people stretch on a regular basis. Add these stretches into your regular routine to say bye-bye to tight hips. PJ Wren is a local trainer and writer who can be found at The Studio in Ladner or online at www. fitnesswithpj.com.

Artist records her travels on canvas An Art-full Life

MEG & MARY ANN

We are fortunate to live in a community that has such a rich and diverse group of artists. We recently had coffee with another artist, Janice McLean, whose journey stretches beyond Canada. McLean has worked as a professional artist for the past 10 years, but had her beginnings with stained glass and sandblasting 38 years ago. Like many, McLean enjoys travel, sitting in the sun and coffee. Travelling provides her with a creative outlet all to her own. McLean photographs her adventures and paints the memories when she gets home. Her passion

is to immerse herself in different cultures, and “observing it through [her] camera lens, capturing and recreating that one moment in time that is so beautiful it makes [her] want to shiver.” McLean loves the challenges that come along with painting. Her style ranges from abstract through floral, figurative and landscapes to architectural and she enjoys adding textures with leafing to her work. To begin her creative process, McLean draws, takes photographs, paints in acrylics, and uses gold and silver leafing on a marble dust plaster to create an essence through line, texture, colour and light. A painting can take anywhere from eight to 10 days for mixed media and up to seven weeks for a larger painting. McLean aims to create four to five days a week and the rest of her time is spent visualizing what she wants to create. Throughout McLean’s art career she has owned

She currently sells her work in Calgary at the Stephen Lowe Gallery, and works directly with designers on corporate projects, home staging and

repeat art collectors. You can also see her work at Illuminate Restorante in Tsawwassen. Through years of owning her own commercial and art related business, she has gained invaluable insight into doing business and working together with the public and other artists. In the past few years

she has seen a shift in the art world: people love collecting art, but can’t always collect large and original work at a price point that works for them. Instead, McLean has begun to add mixed media and photography work, along with original watercolour postcards, to create a lower price point for those wanting to begin collecting original art. Throughout her career, the art industry has changed in terms of marketing with the onset of the Internet, that allows her to now connect with people throughout the world with one click of a button. McLean not only sells her work in more traditional settings such as art galleries, but also uses Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and even created her own Kickstarter event last year. This enabled her to travel to Italy and even send back a hand-painted postcard or two. The most important thing she has learned in her artistic journey is that

each new painting brings with it a new challenge and learning experience. She urges new artists to experiment with a new medium once a year and to never stop learning. What does McLean’s future hold? She hopes that her dream of travelling more, living in Europe for six months of the year and painting a masterpiece come true. Her journey as an artist inspires us to really enjoy the beauty around us, to be open to new experiences and to find the things in our lives that drive us. Let us all be a little braver and paint a masterpiece that is “so beautiful that it awakens the beauty on this earth and forever changes people.” Visit McLean on Facebook or at www.jmcleangallery.com. Six Unique Lakeside Retreats in British Columbia Is there anything better than a room with a view? The lure of staying lakeside is strong, not just for the lovely views but for easy access to sandy shores and surrounding woods or vineyards. It also helps if your accommodation is top-notch. In BC, you can have it all. WINE COUNTRY NEST on Okanagan Lake, Kelowna For a weekend in wine country, head to Quails’ Gate, a family-run operation in BC’s Okanagan Valley that boasts not one but two lakeside retreats. The Lake House, a luxury fourbedroom property fit for 10, has a sprawling kitchen, multiple patios, and a private dock. The Nest offers cosier comfort for seven, plus access to a private beach. Wine fridge empty? Swirl and sip at a 30-minute Passion for Pinot Noir tasting or 60-minute Best of Boucherie Tour, and choose your favourites to bring back to your lakeside home away from home.

HISTORIC HIDEAWAY on Okanagan Lake, Naramata The lure of Okanagan Lake—a vast and deep pool of blue—can be traced to BC’s Gold Rush. It was in 1908, during days of boom and bust, that a stretch of sand on the eastern lakeshore near Penticton proved an ideal spot for newspaper magnate John Moore Robinson to build his dream home. The Naramata Heritage Inn & Spa served as a cultural centre, girls’ private school, and a family residence. Today, the inn boasts 12 finely appointed rooms, a restaurant, and a spa—all within reach of stellar wineries and cycling along the historic Kettle Valley Rail Trail. BEACHY-KEEN COMFORT on Skaha Lake, Penticton Barefoot Beach Resort, a new Penticton offering on Skaha Lake’s warm, sandy shoreline, promises a stay that’s far from conventional. Here, 12 yurts, complete with

private patios and barbecues, draw sunseekers to BC’s Okanagan. Lazy days will be spent on the water, while evening respite will draw you back to your cool, circular shelter. Bonus: outfitted with skylights, the resort’s yurts offer plenty of opportunity to stargaze while you drift into dreamland. ROCKY MOUNTAIN RETREAT on Emerald Lake, Yoho National Park Set on the shores of its namesake lake, Emerald Lake Lodge is ideal for outdoorsy types, thanks to hand-hewn timber cabins surrounded by serious Rocky Mountain peaks. A haven for hikers, canoeists, and paddleboarders, Yoho National Park-situated Emerald Lake provides the ultimate home base for adventure. Following a day’s pursuits, it’s back to the main lodge, bedecked with century-old fireplaces and an oak bar salvaged from an 1890s Yukon saloon. We’ll drink to that.

Emerald Lake Lodge takes its name from the area’s jewel-toned water. LAKESIDE MANSION on Kootenay Lake, Nelson Kootenay Lake. Selkirk Mountains. For Selwyn G. Blaylock, this slice of heaven near Nelson was the ideal spot for a summer home. Built in the early 1930s, the historic Blaylock’s Mansion welcomes all with seven rooms adorned with period furniture and antiques, a billiards room, and a massage and steam-room facility. The property also boasts 5.1 hectares (13 acres) of manicured gardens—including one of the largest arboretums in the Kootenay Rockies— an outdoor swimming pool, private tennis courts, and a gardener’s cabin that has been renovated for summer sleepovers.

HOT SPRINGS HOT SPOT on Upper Arrow Lake, Halcyon Hot Springs The cottages and chalets at Halcyon Hot Springs provide excellent accommodation for those who love everything to do with water. Hop on an inflatable air mattress for a splash in Upper Arrow Lake, or opt for a soak in the resort’s healing, mineral-rich pools. The restorative springs at this year-round retreat draw enthusiasts in need of a reprieve; warm, hot, and even cold plunges revive the senses. Out of the water, the resort boasts a full-service spa, and the Kingfisher Restaurant pairs local ingredients with views of the Monashee Mountains and the pretty lake in the distance.

Bonner taking her game east South Delta volleyball standout continuing her career at Queen’s University MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

With a national gold medal in her back pocket, Kennedy Bonner is ready for the next chapter of her volleyball career in Ontario. The Grade 12 standout from Tsawwassen concluded her club season two weekends ago in Edmonton by helping the White Rock Volleyball Academy capture the U17 Nationals. She was one of three team members to earn tournament all-star honours as the dominant performance came just two weeks after winning provincial gold at the Richmond Olympic Oval. Thanks to her November birthday, Bonner had her choice of playing U18 or U17 this season. “In league play, the U17 and U18 teams play against each other anyways. I have always done (coach David Carrasco’s) academies so decided to play for them this year,” she said. The 6-foot-1 left side hitter is eligible to play one more season of club ball but that’s going to be near impossible while living in Kingston, ON. Bonner has signed with Queen’s University and will embark on her freshman season with the Golden Gaels next fall. She becomes the latest South Delta Secondary volleyball player to join a university program. Grade 12 classmates Ashley Klassen (Florida International) and Jayde Robertsen (Eastern Washington) earned scholarships to their respective schools. Bonner was aged up in her Grade 10 year to help the Sun Devils win the provincial title back in 2014 on a team that included Megan and Nicole McNamara (UCLA), Laura Findlay (Manitoba) and Cassidy Pearson (Fraser Valley). For Bonner, she made her mind up some time ago that her volleyball talent would open doors for her potential career path and staying in Canada simply made the most sense. “I want to become a doctor so the schooling was very important to me,” she explained. “I like the idea of being able to still play volleyball but still get good schooling. Queen’s is a nice campus, has a good reputation for their programs and a competitive volleyball team.”

Queen’s Unversity bound Kennedy Bonner earned tournament all-star honours in helping the White Rock Volleyball Academy win the U17 national club title earlier this month. Bonner’s grades were good enough on their own to eventually be accepted into Queen’s Bachelor of Science (Honours) program which will lead her into med school. Her recruitment to the women’s volleyball team solidified her status. The Golden Gaels freshman class will include Bonner’s former provincial teammate Saffron Van Der Linde. “I knew I wanted to compete in the CIS and (Ontario University Athletics) have lots of schools that

are more eduction focused than volleyball, the same way UBC and (Alberta) are. I liked the idea to go (out of province), start fresh and see new things,” continued Bonner. Growing up, she was a multisport athlete — also playing rep “A” fastpitch with the Delta Heat and soccer. With the overlapping seasons, she focused on just volleyball after her Grade 9 year. “It’s a real team sport and that’s what I have always liked about it. You can make one mistake in other

sports and the whole game can be blamed on you. With volleyball, it’s one point at a time and there is always a chance you can get back into a game.” Hockey has also been a big part of her family. Her dad Scott Bonner was longtime general manager of the Western Hockey League’s Vancouver Giants. “I actually played when I was younger and broke my dad’s heart when I quit,” laughed Kennedy, the youngest of his two daughters.

Sports U17 South Delta United was edged in penalty kicks by Port Moody in the Coastal Cup final.

Provincials next for U17 United MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Motivation shouldn’t be a problem when South Delta United heads to Vernon in early July for the Provincial “B” Cup championships. The U17 boys rep soccer team saw its bid to become Coastal Cup champs end with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss in penalty kicks to Port Moody Barcelona last Sunday in Aldergrove. The two District 5 League rivals could very well meet again in the Okanagan where they both will be part of what’s expected to be an eightteam tournament. The Provincial Cup format will also feature regional winners from throughout B.C. The top two teams after three days of round-robin play will meet in the gold medal game. The second place finishers from each group play for bronze. South Delta took a 2-1 lead into the second half of the Coastal final on goals by Rowan Childs and Jake Mallard. Port

Moody equalized soon after the interval and there would be no further scoring, despite 30 minutes of extra time. The result was similar to when the teams met back in round-robin league cup play and settled for a 3-3 draw. Port Moody also won that game in penalty kicks to earn the extra point, although United went on to take top honours. “It was pretty much the same thing. A back and forth game with plenty of exciting soccer. I’m getting too old for this,” laughed South Delta head coach Bill Ross. “It’s just the mindset of both teams to keep attacking. When we took the 2-1 lead (associate coach) Jeff (Skinner) told the boys we weren’t going to be parking the bus and trying to sit on it.” Ross added the players will enjoy a brief break from what has been a long season before resuming training. The team will also play some friendly matches before it heads to Vernon. The provincials take place July 6-9.
