Firefighters given top marks Third-party review shows enhanced medical response program adds value to the system

ing they have been able to utilize their enhanced skills when extricating a patient from a situation that is not accessible to BC Ambulance Service, allowing for a faster medical response. “Delta’s emergency medical responder system will always be viewed as adding value to the system of emergency support,” said Dow. “It is not intended to devalue the critical role that BC Ambulance Service plays in this municipality.” Mayor Lois Jackson and several councillors praised the department and staff for working hard to get the program off and running so successfully. “The people that benefit from this enhanced training are, of course, the people of Delta and I’m very proud of that,” said Jackson. “It is amazing. We have not received any complaints. That shows the depth of learning that the firefighters have. This was a huge team effort.” The fire chief is encouraged by the program’s success. “This program has demonstrated that Delta Fire and Emergency Services is committed to being a progressive, responsive change agent and partner in the provision of emergency pre-hospital services in the province,” Copeland said. “We are now being contacted by other municipalities who are looking into this due to the success of the Delta program.”

The Delta Fire Department’s enhanced medical training program has received top marks after the release of a third-party review. At a recent meeting of Delta council, fire Chief Dan Copeland presented an overview of the review, which outlined some of the key findings, lessons learned and steps ahead to make the program more effective. “We have built an even greater relationship with Fire Chief Dan paramedics Copeland and overall the program has been very successful,” Copeland told council. Last June, the department completed its first year of providing enhanced pre-hospital care to accident and fire victims. After undergoing the necessary training, firefighters are now able to administer pain relief medication, take blood pressure, use pulse oximeters, administer IVs and provide airway management. Following the one-year mark of the program, the Corporation of Delta commissioned Dr. Martha Dow, a researcher and consultant working in the areas of public safety, education and organizational change, to complete a third-party review. In the review, Dow praises the efforts of Delta firefighters, say-
