New MLA part of minority gov’t Ian Paton’s Liberals fall one short of majority after final count conducted by Elections BC IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Newly elected Delta South MLA Ian Paton will be a part of a Liberal minority government — the first minority government in this province in 65 years
— after Elections BC finalized its provincial election count Wednesday afternoon. With the NDP claiming Courtenay-Comox, the last remaining riding up for grabs, the seat totals have the Liberals at 43, compared to 41 for the
NDP and three for the Greens. Paton said it’s still unclear what the Liberals’ plans are moving forward, but clarity should be provided today at a Liberal cau- Ian Paton
cus meeting in Vancouver. “Of course I’m disappointed that we didn’t come out ahead in CourtenayComox, but I’m also disappointed that we didn’t capture North Delta. It would have been great to have
Scott Hamilton and myself both representing Delta,” said Paton. “Having said that, it’s going to be a tight situation, but I’m looking forward to our discussion Friday and seeing the direction that we will go in.” ABSENTEE: see page 3

The 121st edition of Ladner Pioneer May Days fair gets started this afternoon and kicks into high gear tomorrow and Sunday at Memorial Park. The forecast is calling for sunny weather and warm temperatures throughout the weekend. “I’m holding my breath,” laughs May Days event chair Jennifer Scott, noting the fair hasn’t had the greatest luck weather-wise in recent years. Sofia Perez from Sunshine Hills Elementary was selected as this year’s May Queen Tuesday at an event at the Ladner Community Centre where Samaira Sachdevea and Nicole Neilson were chosen as princesses. Perez will officially be crowned Sunday following the parade. The fair starts today with midway rides and a fastball tournament. The Memorial Park fair-

Woman seeks right to die Tsawwassen’s Robyn Moro added to Civil Liberties Association’s legal challenge IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Robyn Moro is trying desperately to find peace. Moro suffers from Parkinson’s and is seeking immediate access to a medically assisted death due to her intolerable and unalleviated suffering. The 68-year-old from Tsawwassen was added this week by the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association (BCCLA) as a new plaintiff to its legal challenge to Canada’s assisted dying legislation. Moro was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2013 just months after her retirement. Her dreams of an active future spent travelling the world with her husband of 50 years quickly became impossible. Now, most of her days are spent in severe pain. Her body shakes constantly with tremors. She has chronic nausea and vomiting, muscle freezing and exhaustion. She said she can no longer tolerate her existence. “I have so much pain every day, and I know my Parkinson’s will only continue to get worse,” Moro said. “I know what my future holds and I don’t want to endure it. I want to be able to die peacefully, with my family by my side. Although we love each other dearly, my husband and family don’t want to see me suffer anymore.

Robyn Moro was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2013 and says she can no longer tolerate her pain-filled existence. They support my choice. It’s the law that is forcing me to suffer.” Prior to her diagnosis Moro was an independent, active grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her four grandchildren. She loved the outdoors, boating and camping. She and her husband would often host friends and family in their home. She no longer has the energy for these activities, relying on her husband for help with nearly every aspect of life. In 2015 the BCCLA won a landmark decision
in Carter v. Canada when the Supreme Court of Canada held that medical assistance in dying should be available to clearly consenting and competent adults who have a “grievous and irremediable” medical condition that causes them enduring and intolerable suffering. The federal government responded to the Carter decision by adding a further requirement: a person’s natural death must be reasonably foreseeable before they can access medical assistance in dying.
Ten days after the government’s new legislation came into force, the BCCLA launched the Lamb v. Canada case, challenging the constitutionality of the “reasonably foreseeable death” requirement. Julia Lamb is a 25-yearold from Chilliwack suffering from spinal muscular atrophy. When the BCCLA launched her case it received 80 inquires from those seeking to join the legal challenge, including Moro. Jay Aubrey, counsel
for the BCCLA, said she worries the current legislation places critically ill Canadians in an impossible position. “People who experience horrific, irremediable suffering, but whose death is not yet reasonably foreseeable, are left with two choices — to continue to suffer intolerably against their will or to turn to non-medical ways of ending their life, such as starvation and dehydration,” Aubrey said. “This is a cruel choice. Surely we have more compassion than to leave people to suffer and die in this way.” Aubrey said she feels confident that Moro will be added to the Lamb legal challenge. “It is the same case that we litigated a few years ago in the Carter case and the Supreme Court was very clear what was constitutional and what was unconstitutional when it came to medically assisted death — they were basing that decision on people with conditions like Robyn’s, like Julia’s,” said Aubrey. “It seems really obvious to us that the current legislation is unconstitutional. Hopefully it won’t take us a few years to prove that again. We have already lost people to really awful nonmedical deaths like dehydration and starvation and Robyn has been clear that would be her way out if the law doesn’t help her. We don’t want to see that.”
Absentee ballots give Paton bigger winning margin
CONTINUED from Page 1 After 1,712 absentee ballots were counted this week, Paton’s margin in Delta South has grown from election night. The final total has him with 11,123 votes, up from 10,473 on May 9, for a
4,686-vote victory over independent Nicholas Wong. The other four Delta South candidates also saw increases from election night due to absentee ballots. Wong’s total jumped to 6,437 (6,050 on election
night), the NDP’s Bruce Reid increased to 5,228 (4,800 on election night), Green candidate Larry Colero is now at 2,349 (2,134 on election night) and B.C. Action Party’s Errol Sherley finished with 88 (77 on election night).
Following Wednesday’s final count, Premier Christy Clark said with 43 Liberal candidates elected as MLAs and plurality in the legislature, they have a responsibility to move forward and form a government.

More answers needed on Terminal 2 Review panel has additional questions, including queries on viability of Roberts Bank proposal SANDOR GYARMATI

The clock remains stopped on Terminal 2 The proposal to build a three-berth container facility on a new manmade island adjacent to the existing container port at Roberts Bank had been slowly winding its way through the federal approval process as an independent panel sifts through the lengthy application. The process essentially stops when the panel asks for additional information or clarification from the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. That was the case a few weeks ago when the panel asked a lengthy series of questions, receiving some answers back but still waiting for others. Those questions include everything from potential maximum ship sizes to mitigation measures to the
economic viability of T2. On that latter point, the panel wants to know more about the proponent’s assertion that Terminal 2 is the only technically and economically feasible alternative to provide the needed container capacity on Canada’s West Coast. The business case behind Terminal 2 has been hotly disputed by opponents, including Against SUBMITTED PHOTO Port Expansion Global Container Terminals told the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency there (APE), but the needs to be more market analysis regarding the suitability of T2 because the marketplace Corporation of for container shipping has changed drastically since plans for the project began. In a 2014 letter to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, Global Container Terminals, the operator of the Deltaport container terminal at Roberts Bank, suggested there should be a thorough review of alternative means, including a discussion of densification of existing terminals. Global Container Terminals was not permitted in the port authority’s call for submissions for interested port operators for T2. Five port operators were shortlisted, but that number is now down to one. A port spokesperson said the process is ongoing and confidential negotiations with the preferred proponent have begun. The port anticipates concluding an agreement over the next several months.

Richmond unveils Horton painting
Tsawwassen artist commissioned to paint ship arriving in Steveston for Canada 150 project IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Maritime artist John Horton was recognized by the City of Richmond this week with the unveiling of his latest work. Horton, a longtime Richmond resident who has lived in Tsawwassen for the past nine years, is considered one of the leading maritime artists in the world. As part of its Canada 150 program, the City of Richmond is commissioning public art pieces and projects. At the recommendation of Coun. Harold Steves, council approved the commissioning of an original work by Horton that would become part of Richmond’s permanent collection. Horton has painted Richmond (Steveston) maritime scenes over the years and although the City of Richmond has acquired some reproductions of at least one of his paintings, the city did not own an original work. The painting was

Visitors are welcome to view the painting during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:15
a.m. to 5 p.m.). “It was a fun project for sure — very nice of the City of Richmond to contact me. I’m very happy with the finished painting,” said Horton. The painting depicts the arrival of the S.V. Titania
and serves as homage to an important milestone in Steveston, but is also a legacy piece to commemorate Canada’s 150th birthday. The painting shows the Titania’s arrival in Steveston Harbour in 1889,
a meaningful occasion in Richmond’s history as it marks the beginning of the region’s illustrious commercial fishing industry. At that time, the Hudson’s Bay Company owned the sailing ship. It was the first time a
Europe-bound vessel had docked in Steveston. The ship was loaded with cases of Fraser River salmon before making the long voyage home. “It was about a twomonth process start to finish, but really a lot of the work was getting all the information together,” Horton recalled. “I had to do a number of rough sketches for them to approve and once that was done, I then went to the finished canvas and started roughing it again. They saw it again and were happy with what they saw and then I went onto the painting.” Later this month, Horton will receive an honour for his work in Chilliwack. He is also working on other commissioned paintings and is designing another coin for the Royal Canadian Mint he says will be coming out next year. He also recently returned from a trip to Europe where he visited his grandfather’s grave in Northern France as well as Vimy Ridge.

Rotarians come to the rescue after tree falls
Homeowner receives help following windstorm IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Several Tsawwassen Rotarians answered a call to action Wednesday morning to help an East Ladner resident remove a fallen tree toppled during Tuesday night’s windstorm. Rotarian Leslie Abramson lives in East Ladner and is kitty corner to a resident who woke up in the morning to a large tree across his driveway. “I talked with him at 6:30 a.m. and he didn’t know what he was going to do. They couldn’t get either vehicle out and had an appointment at the cancer clinic that afternoon,” recalled Abramson. “I then made calls to Rotarians and we had people here by 8 a.m.” Four Rotarians and two neighbours removed the tree, filling up 21 yard bags in the process. “We had it all done in 45 minutes. At 9 a.m. two more Rotarians came to

That’s what Rotary is all about. Our club and its members are really special people.” Elsewhere in the community, the Corporation of Delta was in clean-up mode all day Wednesday. According to Trent Reid,
manager of engineering operations, 15 calls for damage were received Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. Twelve of the calls were for downed trees (four were on private property) and three calls in North Delta were for power outages to traffic signals. There were also numerous calls advising of tree debris on roadways.

hen you stop and think about how long Ladner Pioneer May Days has been around, it’s nothing short of remark-
able. The springtime tradition that will attract thousands to Memorial Park this weekend dates all the way back to 1896 and has operated continuously, save for some war years, ever since. I imagine most people don’t give it a second thought as May Days just has a way of showing up on the last weekend of May every year, but it’s truly special, and says something about small town pride and its connection to the past, that a festival has endured for 121 years. How old is May Days? Well, its inaugural edition took place a month after the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece and almost two decades before the start of the First World War. Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Canada’s seventh prime minister but perhaps best known today as the guy on the $5 bill, began a 15-year run in Ottawa shortly after the first May Days. It’s been around so long that kids at this year’s fair are enjoying the same event their grandparents’ grandparents could have taken part in all those years ago. OK, so I suspect you couldn’t ride the Zipper at that first fair, but the idea of community members getting together to enjoy activities and the company of neighbours has endured. That’s extraordinary given today’s Ladner is largely unrecognizable from a century ago, but even with all the changes, including the ushering in of suburbia with the opening of the George Massey Tunnel in 1959, May Days has remained a constant. Over time the annual fair has become an even greater part of the community’s fabric, a weekend that a great many people, particularly families with young children, circle on the calendar. Whether it’s the lights of the midway, the sounds of live entertainment or aromas emanating from the food trucks, May Days has a way of enticing people to Memorial Park year after year. The fair wouldn’t take place every spring without the efforts of an army of volunteers so event chair Jennifer Scott and her team deserve a big thank you. Not only do they provide a fabulous weekend full of fun but they’re keeping a cherished Ladner tradition very much alive.
Join the Food Revolution and help kids eat a healthy diet
I
t was Food Revolution Day on May 20th. Created by the Jamie Oliver Foundation, the day is intended to highlight the importance of nutrition for school-aged children. Food Revolution ambassadors from all over the world are tasked with ensuring that children within their realm are given opportunity to eat something good for them. The concept was developed in the United Kingdom where for 12 years, 26,000 schools have been providing free healthy lunches to hundreds of thousands of students. Free is the operative word here. Economic modelling by experts at Cambridge and Oxford universities has shown that these subsidized lunches offset health care costs associated with Type 2 diabetes, childhood obesity and mental well-being. The costs of ill health are epic in many regions of the world but particularly in the United Kingdom and North America. It has been estimated that a whopping one per cent of packed lunches have adequate nutritional value for a developing body. Working with schools here in Delta, it is easy to see that our infrastructure was built at a time when the importance of nutritional health was not even close to being on the radar. There are only a handful of schools in our district and most others where cafeterias operate. Instead,
Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER
packed lunches eaten in the classroom is the standard. Mom and dad are busy and there isn’t often the time and, in some cases, money to consider the best food options for our kids. Convenience is king but it is growing overweight children that are destined for health issues in the future. Occasionally “special foods days” see opportunity for students to eat the semblance of a healthy lunch, depending, of course, on what the organizers deem as healthy. We are lucky that some producers from BC Fresh and other organizations provide free produce for our kids on a regular basis. The Jamie Oliver Foundation has been able to convince political leaders that a tax on sugary drinks is appropriate. The revenues from these taxes go directly to health care costs associated with poor nutrition. The idea has been floated recently here as well.
The foundation is now targeting advertisements that promote poor food choices. Our kids are bombarded by these ads online and on TV. Just last night I saw a new ad from McDonald’s that tells mom, dad and the kiddies that they get a free Franklin book when they order a Happy Meal. Using the loveable cartoon turtle to sell Chicken McNuggets is just wrong. Food Revolution Day is actually Food Revolution Week around here and last week saw 450 kids plant 1,000 cucumber seeds for Project Pickle. The kids have also been snacking on foods that are growing, including peas, carrots, radish and lettuce. We have had several “tailgate parties” where the kids eat salad plates directly from the back of my truck. And if you want to see something truly revolutionary, take your dog for a walk down at Boundary Beach Elementary where you can see the first Farm Roots field being planted. The young farmers have nurtured seedlings over the past couple of months and they are now making it into the ground. Thanks to Seabreeze Farms, Century Group, Mainland Bobcat and to the others who made this possible. Make sure your kids eat right. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food. He is a Jamie Oliver Food Revolution ambassador.

Ferriesjustblowingsmoke
Editor: During a recent trip between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay on a Spirit class vessel, I found it difficult to spend time on the outside decks because of cigarette smoke. The smokers stood in the doorways and wandered freely on both decks in spite of signs indicating the ship has two designated smoking areas: one on each side at that level. I counted the different puffers during the 95-minute sailing and concluded there were about 15. According to my math, that means BC Ferries assigned two large smoking areas on these
vessels to accommodate fewer than five per cent of passengers who are compromising the health and comfort of everyone, including the 95 per cent of us who choose not to smoke on board. I contacted BC Ferries to inquire why so much deck space had been designated smoking in spite of the negative effect on all the other passengers and crew. I also wondered why the designated smoking areas were only 10 feet from the doorway, when provincial regulations clearly require twice that and have since last year. Additionally, I wondered why no crew mem-
ber or manager intervened when smokers stood in the doorway or wandered unimpeded along the deck. My inquiries got me sympathy and little else. Then the nice lady told me how difficult it was to create smoking areas on their ships due to various impediments, including fire hazards. I reminded her they have no obligation to provide a smoking area on such a short trip. In fact, no other transportation system allows smoking in B.C. People don’t smoke on airplanes or buses or in taxis and they survive. John Callas
Many offer help after wheelchair mishap
Editor: I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation for the wonderful people who assisted me when I had a malfunction in my motorized wheelchair on 56th Street in Tsawwassen on Thursday, May 18. I was pitched, face-first, into the roadway still in my chair, directly into the path of oncoming traffic. The presence of mind of a
motorist travelling in the lane towards me in stopping his vehicle and lighting up his flashers saved me from serious injury, and possibly worse. Bystanders also came to my aid, righted me and got me back onto the sidewalk. Luckily, one of the bystanders was a doctor and was able to do an evaluation of my condition on the spot. The gentleman who
stopped his vehicle and helped was an off-duty paramedic, so I could not have been in better hands. I was released from Delta Hospital four hours later with stitches in my face and a bruised shoulder. Everyone concerned was incredibly helpful and it speaks so well of the community spirit we have in our community. David Roberts
Drivers told to slow down while on detour
Editor: The construction detour through Imperial Village is obviously a necessity to get the work completed, however I cannot believe how ignorant some drivers are.
Do drivers need to be reminded they are going through a neighbourhood with children, dogs and pedestrians? Would you drive that fast and not slow down for speed bumps if it was your
street? While this detour is in effect, please put yourself in the shoes of residents on Golf Club Drive. Respect their neighbourhood and slow down. Krista Harper

Queen Bee Tea helping both bees and people Ladner Rotary Club hosts Mother’s Day event
The Rotary Club of Ladner’s Queen Bee Tea on Mother’s Day raised over $1,500 to support bees and people through Delta-based Hives for Humanity. Hives for Humanity connects people to nature, community and themselves through bees. Bee populations are constantly threatened and so, in turn, is our food production, in Delta and beyond. Those living in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside are a marginalized population living in hardship and also under constant threat. On Mother’s Day, 100 people attended the
Rotary Club of Ladner’s Queen Bee Tea to have fun and raise funds for Hives for Humanity. Thanks to sponsorship by some Rotarians, 17 guests from both the Boys and Girls Club and McKee Seniors Recreation Centre were able to attend at no cost. Flowers grow throughout Downtown Vancouver and, thanks to Hives for Humanity, bee keeping and honey production provide a sense of fulfillment for people living in the Downtown Eastside. Building bee hives is an important part of the program and produces honey and other bee products
in its local, sustainable economy of people and pollinators. Hives continue to be kept in Delta to support various farm crops. Hives for Humanity founder and executive director Julia Common and a colleague brought live bees and samples of their honey to taste to the event. Common spoke about the origins of Hives for Humanity, which was founded as a project with her daughter who is a social worker. Apiarist Paul Van Westendorp also gave a short talk highlighting the plight of the bee population.

Old cabinet spurs local book exchange Retired teacher shares his love of reading IAN JACQUES

Tod Jensen has used an old cabinet to create the Chilukthan Sloughside Free Book Swap in front of his 52A Street home.
An old cabinet acquired in October during a curbside junk swap has been given a new lease on life through a community book exchange. Ladner resident Tod Jensen is behind the Chilukthan Sloughside Free Book Swap that encourages people to take a book, leave a book or get lost in a book. Jensen, who lives at the end of 52A Street just south of Ladner Centre, was driving home one day when he spotted the cabinet at the side of the road. “I’ve seen a few of these book exchanges through the years and I just thought it was just such a neat thing,” said the retired teacher. “When I spotted this cabinet sitting out on the curb I thought it would make a perfect bookshelf so I asked the homeowner if it was OK that I took it and he said yes.” Jensen painted the cabinet, decorated it a bit and secured it so it wouldn’t get damaged or topple over. “When I started this in the fall I initially invited a
few friends over for dinner and in exchange for the free meal I asked them all to bring a book or two,” he recalled. “We filled up the cabinet. Since then I have added a few books myself, but primarily what is here now are all books from others who have swapped or shared.” The top three shelves of the book exchange are for adult and teen books, while a fourth shelf, hidden behind a bottom door, is reserved for children’s books. “Most times when I come out in the morning new books have been added. It’s been such a fun thing. It’s been fabulous,” Jensen said. “The cabinet held up very well in the
Macey Please meet Macey, a gorgeous one year old female pitbull mix! She weighs around 50lbs, a great all round size, not too big and not too small. This girl is high energy and would love an active family that plays hard, “active” being the key word! Macey would make a fantastic activity buddy; running, hiking, playing and road tripping. She is still very much a puppy and is learning her basic rules and manners. Training will be an important part of her home life. Training is mentally tiring for dogs and is an excellent way for people to bond with their pets. Macey absolutely loves other dogs, big and small. Because of her youth, she doesn’t always understand the cues that the other dog may be tired or have had enough. She would greatly benefit from a patient and older fur sibling to help guide her and learn the ropes of being a “dog”. Because of her puppy-ness, we feel she *could* be trained not to chase cats, but it would be a process because of her high energy. Her foster family doesn’t have kids, but they’ve had a few over to visit and Macey loved them! Small children might not be a good idea as she is still learning her manners and might knock ‘em over or jump on them in excitement. This lovely girl is perfectly crate trained and has no separation anxiety, just give her her favorite chew toy and she’s set! She is also housebroken, and signals when she needs to pee with a bark or pacing by the door. She is learning her leash manners, but with time and training and the right harness, she will get it locked in as she is a clever girl! She is more nervous off leash, and feels secure when walking around with her people on leash....the world is still a new and sometimes scary place! As with all our dogs, Macey is spayed and up to date on all shots and vaccines.

Ladner woman named Hero of Ability Christina Basi honoured by BC Centre for Ability IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Courage, perseverance, dedication — just a few words many use to describe Ladner’s Christina Basi. Her story was recognized Thursday night at the 18th annual Dining for Dreams Gala where the BC Centre for Ability celebrated its Heroes of Ability, five inspirational people served by the centre who demonstrate resilience in everyday life and inspire others. At 32, Basi has overcome challenges and odds that most couldn’t. It all began June 18, 2001, just a month short of her 17th birthday, when she fell ill while walking with a friend to McDonald’s. After a visit to Delta Hospital, she was transferred to B.C. Children’s Hospital where doctors discovered she had suffered a series of blood vessel ruptures inside her brain, a congenital condition called an artertiovenous malformation (AVM) resulting in strokelike symptoms. It resulted in lengthy rehab at G.F. Strong. But by mid-summer, she amazed her doctors by walking again and was back in class for Grade
12. She graduated with honours and was accepted into the nursing program at UBC. She had a bright future ahead of her.
“If you are challenged in life once and you recover, you think, ‘OK, great, that’s behind me,’ but to get this type of challenge twice just when you are reaching adulthood it’s a bit overwhelming. ANDY BASI
But only four weeks after completing her first year at UBC, she suffered a re-bleed of the AVM, falling back to square one. “If you are challenged in life once and you recover, you think, ‘OK, great, that’s behind me,’ but to get this type of challenge twice just when you are reaching adulthood it’s a bit overwhelming,” said her father Andy. “She was going to start driving, but that was
taken away from her, she was going to go to university, that’s taken away from her. Things have been taken away from her, yet she maintains a positive spirit and a positive outlook on life.” Due to her second brain injury, Basi had to withdraw from the nursing program, but studied at BCIT where she graduated with honours from the medical assistance program and is able to work part-time while she continues her rehab and therapy. “It has been a long recovery because after the second bleed I was paralyzed on the left side, so basically learning everything again,” she said. “When they [BC Centre for Ability] contacted me and said I was nominated, it was a real honour. It is nice to be recognized for all my hard work, and the determination to keep going and get better. I’ve been told over the years that I’m an inspiration to other people, so that makes me happy to hear that.” Andy said their family has learned to put things into perspective. “When Christina was at GF Strong, rather than focus on herself she was able to see other people

Seniors VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY: A COMMON RISK FACTOR FOR SENIORS Years ago doctors were mainly concerned about vitamin D deficiency in children. Foods were fortified with vitamin D to prevent the bone disease called rickets. Now we know that rickets was only the tip of the iceberg and that seniors are also at high risk for vitamin D deficiency. According to a recent study in the journal Age and Ageing, vitamin D deficiency may contribute to osteoporosis, muscle weakness, hip fractures, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, arthritis and poor general health in seniors. Why Are Seniors at Risk? People over age 50 have an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency and the risk increases with age. As people age they lose some of their ability to synthesize vitamin D from sunlight. Vitamin D also needs to be activated in the kidney before it can be used by the body and this function also decreases with age. Finally, elderly people who are homebound are less likely to get outdoor exercise and activity. Researchers have

How Much Vitamin D Do You Need? You need more vitamin D as you get older. According to the Food and Nutrition Board at the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies, an adequate intake of vitamin D up until age 50 is 1,0002,000 International Units (IU) for both men and women. Between age 50 and 70 the adequate daily intake is 3,000 IU for men and women. After age 70 the adequate intake is 4,000 IU for men and women.

with our “prayer words,” but what about the rest of the time. We need to be more deliberate about what we are saying everyday, so we can avoid the disasters and detours that sometimes our own con-
fessions have been incubating unchecked. The Bible says we are to put a guard in front of our mouth. I know it can be hard, especially if you use a lot of words each day, but your confession matters. Be mindful that how you speak about it will change your perspective of it, for better or worse. Words matter and they have a lot more power than we often realize. So let’s “spy on our words” and take a little time to check the confession before you start trying to adjust the situation. Line up your words with His (Jesus) word. Let your confession be faith filled and your perspective will become more God filled.

Audience favourite returns Sidekick Players Club closing out its 20th season with Jenny’s House of Joy
T
he Sidekick Players Club is bringing back an audience favourite to close out its 20th season. Norm Foster’s Jenny’s House of Joy opens a three-week run at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre next Thursday. Directed by Carroll Lefebvre, the play stars Sidekick regulars Lisa Gach, Emile Greene, Carol Jones, Kathryn Stewart and Marcia Strang. Jenny’s House of Joy was chosen by Sidekick audiences as the “Best Comedy” for an encore to celebrate the local theatre group’s milestone season. A mix of Foster humour and seriousness, it’s the story of four women Jenny, Francis, Anita and Natalie - who work in a brothel in Baxter Springs, Kansas in the late 1800s. Those who complain Foster’s comedies are too male-centered are in for a shock. Although the audience gets to know Earl, Cecil and the other good old boys who visit Jenny Starbuck’s Baxter Springs brothel, it’s strictly through the eyes of the spirited
women who walk them up that flight of stairs to threebuck heaven. So when smartmouthed old Frances, genteel little Anita and butter-wouldn’t-melt-inher-mouth Natalie let fly with the caustic remarks about the fly-by-night bedmates who keep them up nights, it’s hard not to take notice. Along the way, the audience learns a lot about these hard-workin’ gals and the way they bond between stints in Jenny’s upstairs rooms. Jenny’s House of Joy runs June 1 to 17. There will be 8 p.m. performances on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays with 2 p.m. matinees on Sundays, June 4 and 11. Seating is “bistro style” with refreshments available for purchase. As seating is limited, early reservations are advised. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for seniors (60+). Reservations can be made by calling 604288-2415. Please note that Sidekick does not accept debit or credit cards at the box office.

Delta Music Makers at Genesis Theatre Community band to present its first-ever Summer Pops and Hit Movies concert The Delta Music Makers are celebrating their firstever Summer Pops and Hit Movies concert this Sunday in Ladner. The community band will feature the music of Leroy Anderson and Henry Mancini at the concert set for 2 p.m. at Genesis Theatre. Most people know the Mancini name because of his genius in scoring music for the movies, such as The Pink Panther, Baby Elephant Walk and Moon River. Anderson wrote for the Boston Pops during the 1950s and ’60s, with outstanding marches and audience-friendly music, including the occasional popular hit such as The Syncopated Clock and Bugler’s Holiday. Admission to Sunday’s concert is by donation, with no obligation. Conductor Curt Jantzen

Having progressed from beginners to excellent players over the 34 years, Delta Music Makers performs as many as 10 concerts per year in Tsawwassen and Ladner, entertaining thousands of people in theatres, concert halls, recreation centres, hospitals and public venues. The band has also performed much further afield, such as Scotland, Ireland, England, Germany, Austria, New York, Boston and elsewhere. In September, many band members have signed up for the Budapest/Vienna Musical Adventure organized by the Jantzens, who are also travel agents.

this year’s production of Tsawwassen’s Los Gitanos Spanish School of Dance. The show will be presented on Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4 at the Metro Theatre in Vancouver. Set in the Andalucian town of Granada, a tale of love and betrayal is danced to beautiful live and traditional music that will transport the audience to another time and place. “My goal is to provide a full flamenco experience to our audience,” explains Beverly Mantovani, Los Gitanos’ owner, teacher and choreographer. “The variety of dances, the story development, the wonderful costumes, and live and recorded music offer drama, joy, passion and entertainment that is different than any other art form.” Mantovani is known for her innovative choreographies that push the boundaries of what has been done before, and this edition is no exception. The show features 30
dance students plus live musicians performing a wide range of traditional flamenco rhythms, culminating in an emotional number to the zarzuela music of Geronimo Gimenez’ La Boda de Luis Alonso. Similar to previous productions, the show is fast paced and powerful. “Flamenco must be danced with great heart and it shows individual interpretations from the various dancers. It is a dance form originated by the persecuted peoples in southern Spain and is filled with a wide range of emotions, including happiness, grief or loneliness,” says Mantovani. “All my students dance with their heart on the line showing off their strong technique, their hard work and their dedication to interpret the music through their own life experiences.” Tickets for El Destino are $25. They are available by calling 604-266-7191, 604-948-8081 or by emailing info@losgitanos.ca.

The Delta Choral Society performed with the Delta Concert Band at a benefit concert for Special Olympics Delta in April.
Choirs celebrate Canada with a choral landscape The Delta Choral Society will be filling the South Delta Baptist Church with beautiful music tomorrow. The society’s annual spring concert celebrates Canada and choral music. Oh Canada! And Beyond — A Choral Landscape has a little something for everyone, says artistic director Danielle Hamilton. “Our chamber group, Tapestry, is doing a breathtaking version of the
iconic Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah and the Delta Community Choir is performing a lyrical version of Four Strong Winds,” she says, adding some Canadian writers and arrangers will be featured to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. Joining the two adult choirs is the Delta Children’s Choir, which will be performing its own set of music as well as combined works with the
adult groups. Oh Canada! And Beyond — A Choral Landscape will run for two shows at the South Delta Baptist Church, 198856th St., Tsawwassen, on Saturday, May 27 at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students and seniors while children under 12 get in for free. Tickets are available at the door or online at www.deltachoral.ca.

SUMMER CAMP
Camp Qwanoes added the Jet Stream in 2016 for its 50th anniversary. Campers soar side by side from the land to the sea on 1,000-foot ziplines, ending at the Beach Port in the Aqua Park.
New adventures experienced each year at Camp Qwanoes
In a spectacular oceanfront setting at the edge of Maple Mountain on Vancouver Island, Camp Qwanoes offers kids an ideal opportunity to experience unique adventures and connect with others. At camp kids can just be kids and enjoy an escape from our fast-paced, plugged-in world. Over 75 activities are available for campers who come from Vancouver Island, Greater Vancouver and beyond. In the words of a camper, “The AquaPark, challenge course, and land activities are all so different and amazing and there’s something for everyone.” As part of the camp’s 50th anniversary celebra-
tion in 2016, a breathtaking, 1,000-foot double zip line known as the Jet Stream was added, where campers fly from the top of the bank overlooking the ocean to a brand-new tower at Qwanoes Beach in the heart of the AquaPark. From this tower, called the Beach Port, campers can try out a giant rope swing, dive or jump off, or ride another zip line to the beach. “At the beach you can go wakeboarding, jump on floating trampolines, splash down floating slides or play on a giant floating teeter totter with your friends,” says executive director Scott Bayley. “You can even scale a 14-foot
tall iceberg or soar through the air off a 40-foot blob.” A number of exciting plans are in the works for summer 2017, including a major addition to the challenge course called the Airwalk Village. “We always offer new adventures each year,” says Bayley. “We love to get ideas from campers and staff and see if we can make them reality.” While making new discoveries and learning new skills, campers make friends and grow in confidence. Last summer, over 4,000 campers from a wide variety of backgrounds came to camp and were served by staff from 12 countries. One camper said, “I
feel really accepted here by all my leaders and my friends. I made so many new ones.” Another said, “I have this confidence in me now that I just can’t explain.” Speaking of the impact camp has on kids, Bayley says, “What really makes a week at Qwanoes so special is that we love kids. Our staff work together as a team to provide the greatest week of a child’s life. Qwanoes is a safe place where kids are not only accepted but valued.” Camp Qwanoes, a Christian camp, is located about an hour north of Victoria in Crofton. Summer camp is a beloved tradition in many families. Many parents of young children fondly recall spending their summers at camp, where they made lifelong friends and learned the finer points of roasting marshmallows and competing in threelegged sack races. Parents looking for the right summer camp for their kids will soon discover there are various types of camps, each offering youngsters something different. The following are some of the summer camp options parents can expect to encounter as they search for the right camper for their kids: Day camp Day camps mean kids
will return home each night rather than sleep over at camp. Day camps typically offer many of the activities people have come to associate with camps, including crafts, sports and even day-trips to experience local culture or attractions. Many day camps are co-ed, and counselors typically live within the community. Faith-based camp Faith-based camps offer many of the same activities as more traditional summer camps, but do so while simultaneously offering campers the opportunity to celebrate and further explore their religious beliefs. Sports camps Some summer camps focus on a particular sport, catering to young

Defending champions show flashes of potential at elite 10 team 15U tourney MARK BOOTH
The Delta Tigers didn’t repeat as champions at Richmond City Baseball’s 15U AAA Victoria Day Tournament but did provide enough encouraging signs with bigger conquests on the horizon. The Tigers closed out the 10-team event Monday afternoon with an 8-4 victory over the host Richmond Chuckers to earn bronze. A couple hours earlier, their title bid ended with a 4-2 loss to to the WestCoast Cardinals. It was another example of what their shortcoming proved to be all weekend — not generating enough offence. Delta made things interesting with a couple of late runs but was silenced for five innings by winning pitcher Max Yuen. The Tigers’ roster features a near even split of first-and-second-year Bantam age players, while only two have previous experience at the AAA level. Last year, Delta won B.C. Minor Baseball provincials with 12 second-years and just two rookies. “This team is very different. We have a better pitching staff but our offence hasn’t clicked how it did last year,” said head coach Cam Frick. “I remember myself 10 years ago being in Bantam ‘AAA.’ It’s tough to hit with that wood bat for the first time. Some of our young guys are struggling with it a little bit and I’m confident they will get it going.” What the Tigers do have is a surplus of quality starting pitching and that’s a huge asset come tournament time when teams’ lack of depth is often exposed. Connor McIntosh tossed a complete game 65-pitch gem as Delta opened the tournament with an impressive 11-1 drubbing of Cloverdale. Noah Thomas and Braedy Euerby provided more solid pitching but a couple of late inning errors proved costly in a 4-3 loss to North Shore. Jakob Wegner was then terrific in a 4-2 set-

The Alberta academy team dominated the entire weekend — capping a perfect run with a 9-0 drubbing of WestCoast in the championship game. The Tigers encounter was its lone test of the tournament. Delta was now in a must-win mode Sunday afternoon and came through with an 8-2 win over Victoria, behind the pitching of Declan Forbes. It was back to McIntosh for the semifinal and the Ladner right-hander provided another excellent start. “I thought McIntosh did a good job on the mound for us and deserved better,” continued Frick. “We made a couple of costly errors behind him and our bats didn’t get going until
the sixth. “I was happy how we battled (against Victoria). It was a good experience for our guys. We had some players step up who usually aren’t leaders on the team. Now, going into the few tournaments, we will have a little bit more experience and that really helps as a young team.” The Tigers will turn their attention back to league play where it sits atop the Eastern Division with an 11-3-1 record. They are slated to play at the North Shore Twins Tournament over the Canada Day Weekend and will then head to the Island for Baseball B.C.’s national qualifier. The provincials are slated for late July in Richmond.

Tsawwassen Athletics celebrate their tournament win in Newton.
It was the comeback of the ages that produced a thrilling tournament victory in Newton for the Tsawwassen Athletics. The 13U Pee Wee AA baseball team is Ross Tournament champions following a pair of improbable playoff wins. The Athletics looked like they would be settling for silver when the Cowichan Valley Mustangs took a commanding 13-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh and final inning. They went on to win 7-5 in eight innings. The team includes: Nolan Wrathall, Gavin Wood, Kyle Losse, Will Andersen, Ryan Heppner, Adam Simpkin, Declan Dunn, Cooper Loewen, Declan Speiran, and Lucas Nobbs. SCHULER, Tim Jacob James December 26, 1940 April 10, 2017
GILMORE (nee LeRiche) Roberta Elsie June 13, 1927-May 10, 2017 On May 10, 2017, Roberta passed away peacefully at the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, British Columbia. Roberta was just shy of her 90th birthday. She and her husband Bill had relocated to Kamloops from Tsawwassen in August 2016, where they had lived for 36 years. Roberta was born in Montreal on June 13, 1927 to Stanley and Bertha (nee Hoult) LeRiche. She attended Montreal High School and went on to graduate from the Royal Victoria Hospital as a registered nurse in 1949. After graduating, Roberta practiced and taught nursing at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, BC. Roberta met Bill, a McGill mining engineering graduate, on New Years Eve 1948 and they were married in January 1952. They moved to Atikokan, Ontario where she continued her nursing career in the local hospital. The family moved to Baie Verte, Newfoundland in 1962 where Roberta became the public health nurse for the region at the request of the provincial government in St. John’s. After moving to Vancouver in 1964, Roberta continued her career with the YMCA International College until her retirement at the age of 65. After retirement, she maintained an active role in the Hospice movement in Ladner, BC and worked as a volunteer with the Delta Hospital Auxiliary until the summer of 2016. Roberta is survived by her loving husband Bill and their two children, David (Anita) and Lesly (Bruce). Her memory will be cherished by her grandchildren Erin (Nelson), David (Laura), Megan (Mike), Laura, Logan, Allison and Jennifer and by her great grandchildren Isaiah, Nita, Luca, Jade, Zac, and Clay as well as by her sister Jeanne and brother-in-law Sam (Janet) along with many friends and relatives. Roberta was a strong and vibrant individual. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She enjoyed cross stitching, quilting, and knitting, had a real sense of adventure and loved to travel. Mom had a real affection for animals. She was generous with her time in the aid of others and continued to support causes close to her heart until the end. Our family is deeply grateful to the staff of Berwick on the Park Retirement Residence in Kamloops, the medical staff of Royal Inland Hospital, Dr. Peter Loland and staff for their kindness and care and to Dr. Larry Adam in Tsawwassen. A memorial service to celebrate Roberta’s life will be held at All Saints Ladner Anglican Church, 4755 Arthur Dr, Delta, BC, at 1 p.m. on June 24th, 2017. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Delta Hospital Foundation in Roberta’s name or a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements entrusted to: Alternatives Funeral & Cremation Services 250-554-2324 Condolences may be expressed to the family from www.myalternatives.ca
The Celebration of Tim’s life will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017 2:00-5:00pm at KinVillage Community Centre, 5410 10th Ave, Tsawwassen, BC. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
