Uncertain future for bridge

NDP leader would defer issue to mayors while Green’s Weaver says second tunnel would be cheaper SANDOR GYARMATI & IAN JACQUES The two B.C. political party leaders who could very well be forming the next government in the coming days are certainly making it sound like the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project will be scrapped, but where that leaves commuters having to deal with the daily bottleneck at the tunnel is unclear. Earlier this week New Democrat leader John Horgan, who has not stated whether he’s outright opposed to the $3.5 billion project, said it’s not likely the best plan and that he would defer the issue to the region’s mayors. The region’s mayors, as well as Metro Vancouver, have already stated their opposition, indicating the 10-lane bridge is unnecessary. Interviewed on CKNW radio Wednesday, Green leader Andrew Weaver claimed a second tunnel would be “much cheaper” and also that the new bridge was not part of an overall transportation plan. Saying congestion would be transferred to the Oak Street Bridge, the Green leader noted what is needed is a comprehensive strategy in Metro Vancouver for transportation that includes public transportation, bridge retrofits, and may include a second tunnel. Larry Colero, the Green’s candidate for Delta South in the election, said he believes the sooner construction is halted the better. “We need to cut our losses

Commuters deal with the daily bottleneck at the George Massey Tunnel Wednesday afternoon. and avoid taking on any further contract commitments. It was a reckless idea from the start, and B.C. needs to go back to square one to assess other options that will more effectively reduce congestion,” he said. “I am confident that there are better alternatives that won’t end up costing us $12 billion in total, including interest on the debt. A quick and work-

able solution in the meantime is to restrict truck traffic during rush hours.” Ian Paton, the Liberal-elect MLA for Delta South said it would be a huge disappointment for Ladner, Tsawwassen and South Surrey motorists having to sit through heavy tunnel congestion every day if the well thought out project was delayed

or scrapped. He noted that work has already begun widening Highway 99. NDP-elect MLA for Delta North Ravi Kahlon said that there is no question there are traffic and congestion issues throughout the region, but that the NDP is not committed to moving that congestion to the

next bridge. “We want to have a regional plan that looks at traffic congestion overall and then figure out what the capacity is in the region,” Kahlon said. “It doesn’t make sense to put a 10-lane bridge there, with no financing by the way. It’s unclear where the financing is.” DELTA: see Page 3

Beehive of activity at Southlands Century Group provides construction update on its Tsawwassen development

SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It’s a beehive of activity that’s about to get even busier. The Century Group has provided a construction update on the Southlands, the 215-hectare (537-acre) Tsawwassen site bounded by 56th Street on the west and Boundary Bay Road on the east that will eventually see 950 housing units built on 20 per cent of the property. The remaining 80 per cent has been given to Delta, much of it for farming. According to the development company, work to take place this summer will include trucking in more fill, water main upgrades from the Pebble Hill reservoir down 4th Avenue, pavement of adjacent roads and the beginning of utility installation. Receiving final approval last summer, the project will require an estimated 60,000 dump trucks going to the site over the course of the development, which will take several years. Project director Brad Semke told the Optimist there’s going to be a slight increase in truck traffic heading south on 56th Street during the summer, but he said that will still work out to one out of every 200 vehicles using

The Southlands site will eventually see 950 housing units built on 20 per cent of the property. the road. “It’s dependent on the weather, but the restrictions we put on the trucks is that the trucks tend to come in shifts every two hours, so there’s typically four shifts per day. That’s just Monday through Friday. The first trucks generally arrive between 7:30 (a.m.) and 8 (a.m.)

and are off the streets, typically, by 4:30 (p.m.),” explained Semke. “That’s the only time we’re running trucks. We’re not running it into the evening, we’re not running them any earlier than that. Very rarely we will run trucks on a Saturday. We very strategically try to leave Saturdays and

Sundays devoid of trucks, so the weekends, when most working people are home, they’re not going to be burdened by any of that traffic.” Semke said 5,000 trucks have accessed the project site over the past five months. The Southlands neighbourhood will include a

mix of cottage, townhome and apartment-style housing. Semke noted the first homes are expected to be ready for occupancy in 2019. Meantime, approximately 130 acres of the land is to be dedicated for new public parks along with natural habitat areas.

Delta mayor frustrated project could be stopped

FROM from Page 1 “It is unclear what the environmental impacts are, so the uncertainty comes from the lack of information from the Liberal government. We need to review the books, take our time and look through this and figure out the best solution,” he said. Delta Mayor Lois

Jackson this week expressed frustration that the project could be stopped, and that there’s been so much misinformation, noting the aging tunnel, which doesn’t meet current seismic standards, only has a few more useful years of life. Having to build another tunnel a few years from

now once a second tunnel was built instead of a bridge would be an big waste of money, she said. “The mayors have not talked about this bridge, ever, and they do not intend to talk about the bridge, ever. They want to talk about their own programs. They want to talk about the Pattullo Bridge

replacement. They want to talk about the (rapid transit) line in Vancouver and line out in Surrey. They do not, have not and will not ever talk about the replacement of the George Massey Tunnel,” she said. Jackson said the bridge would have far fewer impacts on farming or the river compared to another

tunnel. Delta and project officials have also warned a strong earthquake will render the current crossing useless or completely destroyed, leaving Delta cut off from its neighbours. The Liberal government said it’s estimated about 9,000 direct jobs would be created over the life of the project.

Biologists examine biofilm as part of port field studies

Jeb Our sweet Southern boy Jeb is a two year old male Australian Cattle dog mix. He is currently underweight, but should end up around seventy pounds. This boy is near perfection! Totally crate trained, housebroken and excellent on leash. He has no issues sharing his toys, and also likes to share everyone else’s food ‘cause he’s still skinny! Jeb gets along well with other dogs, big and small, but definitely prefers the ladies! He has been occasionally bratty with boys, but we feel he will get over that in time. Kitties are just too much fun to chase, so no small prey animals in the home - cats, rabbits, hedgehogs, ferrets etc would not be compatible. And oh, how Jeb loves people! New people, familiar people, teenagers, babies, seniors.... whomever wants to hang with him is just fine with Jeb! We would say he has medium energy, enjoying a good long walk or run each day, but he’s a great guy who would blend into a average to high activity home. He’s just that easy going! As with all our dogs, he is neutered and up to date on all shots and vaccines. If you need a hound in your life, you won’t do better than our boy Jeb! Environmental technical work continues with container program SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Port of Vancouver is continuing its field studies as part of its ongoing environmental technical work for the Container Capacity Improvement Program. Examining, among other things, biofilm, biologists this month are collecting samples from the Roberts Bank upper tidal zone. They’ll analyze the samples for biofilm species composition and indicators of nutritional value to shorebirds. The port notes abiotic parameters, such as temperatures, salinity and depth, will be monitored at the sampling locations. The Container Improvement Program includes infrastructure work that is part of the Deltaport Terminal, Road and Rail Improvement Project, as well as the proposed Terminal 2 project that is at the federal review stage. The biofilm issue has been a hotly contentious one for opponents of the T2 expansion plan, who note mudflats at Roberts Bank provide a unique feeding area for upwards of 600,000 migrating Western Sandpipers and 200,000 Dunlin. “They rely on the rich nutrients found in biofilm in the mudflats at Roberts Bank. The area is unparalleled on the West Coast due to the perfect mix of reduced salinity, nutrients from the Fraser River, low tides, and warmer

spring temperature which provide the perfect conditions for tiny diatoms to produce omega-3 fatty acids just as the sandpipers migrate through this area,” says Against Port Expansion (APE). Without the mudflats, the whole migratory flock, including one of the most important Western Sandpiper flocks in the world, could never make it to the Arctic, APE warns. In its submission to the federal environmental review panel looking at T2, the Corporation of Delta also raised concern about the issue. “Regarding the critical inter-relationship between shore birds and biofilm, Delta is concerned by the Proponent’s conclusion that ‘biofilm composition is expected to change temporarily during freshet in response to decreases in salinity, and return to existing conditions outside of the annual freshet period’, particularly given Environment Canada’s comment that ‘Recent work on Roberts Bank by international scientists has provided new information on the nature of the intertidal diatom community...’ This new information casts reasonable doubt on some of the Proponent’s key conclusions with respect to biofilm and migratory birds,” states Delta’s submission. The municipality also noted that the results of the Adaptive Management Strategy for the Deltaport Third Berth project were

However, the geographic extent of that study was limited to the inter-causeway area and does not provide any reassurance regarding potential impacts of RBT2 north wards of the Deltaport

causeway where impacts would be expected to be greatest. In a project update two years ago, the port concluded, “Our assessment has concluded that feeding opportunities for birds would not be significantly affected after the construction of the new terminal.”

Delta working on strategic plan for libraries

Public engagement process about to get underway with users and community partners SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta is undertaking a strategic plan for its three libraries. A public engagement process is about to get underway with users and community partners who have an interest in collaborating on library issues to define a series of goals. Heather King, one of Delta’s representatives on the Fraser Valley Regional Library board, said a lot has already changed when it comes to libraries, including the ability to borrow telescopes, while ukuleles are “flying off the shelf.” Delta is a member of the FVRL system, which services more than 700,000 people through 25 community libraries, including branches in Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta. The FVRL is also working on its own strategic plan that will be finalized this fall. A staff report to Delta council notes that despite the growth in digital technologies, there is still a

FILE PHOTO

A consultation process will include information sessions at each of Delta’s libraries. clear need and demand within communities for the modern, safe, flexible spaces that libraries offer. Noting Delta’s libraries are open more frequently

and for longer hours, the report provides a general overview as well as Delta trends, including an aging population and an increasing number of

immigrants. The report will be followed up, in conjunction with the public consultation, with a new strategic plan that is to be specific

to Delta’s libraries, but at the same time consistent and complementary to the FVRL plan. Similar to the public engagement process for

Delta’s new museum, the consultation process will include information sessions at each library. Coun. Jeannie Kanakos, Delta’s other representative on the FVRL board, said the plan is to come up with a “made in Delta” approach for local libraries. Last fall, council begrudgingly approved a hike of three per cent for Delta’s share of the FVRL system, which worked out to a $104,955 increase from last year. King at the time noted a one-day “pop-up” survey of Delta residents using the libraries found a high satisfaction rate. She also noted the administration now in place has improved operations greatly. In 2015, civic politicians approved another increase of just over three per cent but also expressed dismay at the budget, pointing out Delta’s portion had gone up by more than 14 per cent over five years. They passed a motion to direct staff to look into opting out of the FVRL, but later decided to remain.

Ride2Survive fundraiser nets big bucks Delta police officer holds 50-hour pole-sit in Richmond, raising more than $22,000 IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Spending 50 hours suspended 50 feet in the air doesn’t seem to phase Delta police Const. Ken Usipiuk. He has now accomplished the feat 15 times raising tens of thousands of dollars in the fight against cancer. His latest effort was last weekend at a Ride2Survive fundraiser in Richmond, which raised more than $22,000. The Ride2Survive is an allvolunteer grassroots event that raises money for the Canadian Cancer Society, designating 100 per cent of donations to the most promising cancer research and prevention. The event is Delta-based and is the largest independent all volunteer single-day fundraising event for the Canadian Cancer Society. The ride leaves Kelowna on June 24 making 11 stops along the way before finishing in Delta just before midnight. Usipiuk is in his seventh year volunteering with Ride2Survive, which is now in its 13th year. The police officer is also actively involved in fundraiser for and riding in the Cops for Cancer in September. “We have been very fortunate

to get so much support,” he said. “I lost my mother to cancer. As a result of that and being a young family it started to make me think that we need to get out there and start helping. My first ride with Cops for Cancer was 2006 and I haven’t stopped since.” For Ride2Survive, Usipiuk drives up to Kelowna on the Friday night and then at 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning, leads the Ride2Survice team (including pilot cars, 120 cyclists, mechanical vehicles, BC Ambulance and the entire support team) on a 400km journey back to Delta along the Coquihalla Highway to Hope and then along Highway 7 to the Golden Ears Bridge, into Surrey and Delta by midnight the same day. “His role is vitally important to the safety of our entire team,” said Kerry Kunzli, volunteer president of Ride2Survive. “He works in close communication with other police departments for the safety and success of our event.” Usipiuk said after getting involved as the police escort he thought he could do so much more. “I brought some of the fundraising ideas from Cops for

drian Dix got kicked to the curb after his New Democrats received 39.7 per cent of the popular vote back in 2013, yet his successor, John Horgan, will soon be given the keys to the province after getting only one-half of one per cent more. Yes, these are strange times in B.C. politics and likely to get even stranger in the days and months ahead. The accord signed by the New Democrats and Greens would provide a razor-thin minority and create a tenuous governing situation, but I’m guessing that as much as it’s a four-year deal, Green Leader Andrew Weaver only needs it to last until next fall. The notion that the Greens and NDP can find enough common ground to see this thing through to the next scheduled election is likely wishful thinking, but perhaps it doesn’t need to last that long to be considered a success for the upstart Greens. It stands to reason that it’s in Weaver’s best interests to continue to prop up an NDP minority until next fall when it sounds like the issue of electoral reform will be put to a referendum on the municipal election ballot. If B.C. voters can be convinced to back some form of proportional representation at that time, it would represent the single biggest achievement in the history of the Green Party in this province. Proportional representation would solidify the Greens as a player on B.C.’s political scene and likely have them hold the balance of power for years to come. They are doing so now with three seats, but their percentage of the popular vote would give them 14 seats under a revamped electoral formula, a number that would give them far more clout. As long as the Greens stay in double digits as far as the popular vote goes, they would almost certainly act as a king maker thanks to proportional representation. Only once in the last half-century has a political party in B.C. received more than 50 per cent of the popular vote (the Gordon Campbellled Liberal decimation of the NDP in 2001), which means the party with the most seats will almost certainly need an ally in order to govern. The accord signed this week will allow the Greens to help shape government policy in the short term, but it’s hard not to look to next fall as the ultimate goal.

Forecasted cost of bridge is beyond comprehension

s of writing this column it looks like a coalition of the NDP and the Greens are going to try to govern British Columbia. We must congratulate Mr. Ian Paton for winning South Delta on behalf of the provincial Liberals, but I believe we will be voting again within a year, so we will see if the Green-NDP can make it work. I recall a few years ago that a referendum was held on the south end of Vancouver Island to find out if the residents wanted to pay for the construction of a sewage treatment plant. The referendum concluded in a “NO” vote. Does it seem a little reprehensible to you that the party that holds the balance of power is called the “Green” Party, when its MLA’s represent the only area of British Columbia that ejects their sewage into the ocean without treatment? Just wondering! While the election was dominating B.C. news I noticed that on May 6, the Vancouver Sun printed a column on page A16 regarding the proposed new bridge to replace the Massey Tunnel and I

Community Comment GREG HOOVER

wanted to make sure South Delta noticed what it said. The $3.5 billion construction cost isn’t the entire story. Government documents have confirmed that to finance this bridge over the next 50 years will cost the taxpayers of B.C. a further $8 billion, bringing the total current forecast cost of this bridge to $11.5 billion. As well as the much greater cost, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority now says it doesn’t intend to dredge the river for ocean going ships, so why is this bridge still proposed to be built? The traffic problem from the thousands of port trucks is the

problem, so why not fix that issue like they do in other parts of the world and save B.C. taxpayers $11.5 billion? Personally I don’t understand how the province could propose to spend $3.5 billion to join South Delta and Richmond and now the reality of $11.5 billion in taxpayer liability is completely beyond comprehension. Recently I’ve had conversations with folks from different parts of Ladner and Tsawwassen and I’m repeatedly hearing the same thing: neighbourhoods are seeing more houses being left empty after being sold or being occupied by short-term renters. It seems there is an issue, but not much discussion on what it is doing to where we live. I’d like to hear about this if it’s happening in your neighbourhood. Please e-mail me at ghoover@ dccnet.com with the subject “Empty or Rented” and don’t include attachments. Enjoy the sunshine. We’ve yet to see true cost comparison

Editor: In a February 2017 report the minister of transportation provides the estimated costs of decommissioning the George Massey Tunnel to be $210 million. This would include the complete removal of the tunnel, including the approaches and towers. If you add the cost of $78 million to relocate the hydro transmission lines and place them overhead, this would bring the total estimated costs of removing the tunnel to $288 million. This would be in addition to the $3.5 billion estimated cost of the new bridge. They said they could have rehabilitated the existing tunnel with seismic upgrades, new ventilation, lighting, etc. for $45 million and continue to operate it at a yearly cost of $1.5 million. But they

thought this would be a waste of money as in the near future the demands of the Port of Vancouver would want the tunnel removed for navigable reasons. They said the inside of the tunnel was becoming blackened and contaminated from vehicle emissions and they were afraid it could be imbedded in the concrete and was a health hazard. This despite the fact the tunnel has four two-speed reversible fans capable of producing 250,000 cubic feet of air per minute and the tunnel is designed to allow the free flow of air through it. If this is the case, why would this not be a problem in other tunnels throughout the world that have been in operation for decades? The Maas River Tunnel that was built from 1937 to 1942 is a

prime example of another cement-built, immersed tunnel that does not feel it needs to be decommissioned because of its age, as starting in 2017, they are going to spend $262 million Euros to renovate it. And it’s 19 years older than the George Massey Tunnel. They are claiming the tunnel protrudes above the river bottom and causes environmental problems with the natural flow of the river. This is not true and they know it. This is just another of their misleading statements to justify the removal of the tunnel and provide the industrial lobbyists with their wish. We have yet to see a true cost comparison in building a complete new modern tunnel crossing instead of a bridge. Douglas George Massey

What kind of democracy is this?

Editor: Millions of taxpayer dollars have already been spent on engineering and $18 million has already been awarded to road work which is well underway and now they want to go back to the drawing board? Mr. Horgan said he wants to let the mayors decide what’s best but what does the Mayor of New West or Port Coquitlam or Vancouver, have to do with a crossing in Delta/Richmond? If they want to let the mayors decide, than why not leave it up to Delta, Surrey and Richmond?

We’re talking about the worst bottleneck in Canada. The tunnel has five years left before it starts to fail and become a threat to those who drive through it and yet we, the commuters, have to wait even longer now. What kind of democracy allows two parties to join forces anyway? When I went to the ballot box, I didn’t see a Green/NDP option. How an amalgamation is justifiable, in government, is beyond me. E. Graham

Grateful for help from Good Samaritans

Editor: I sat in my car on the dike at the end of River Road and forgot to turn off my headlights – I was drinking in the view and the activity around. When ready to leave, my car battery was flat. A Ladner Good Samaritan realized what had happened and came to offer help, setting up his leads for my ailing battery. I had the chance to tell his mother who was in his car, that she had done a great job of

bringing up her son and I am thanking them both again here. At Memorial Park on Saturday, I dropped my house keys and when I went back to try to find them at the last place I remember having them, a young couple helped me look for them and found them in the grass. They were so thrilled to have been helpful and I thank them also. Yeah for Ladner and Ladnerites! Jesse Pringle

Horrified with state of harbour Editor: Last Sunday was a glorious day so my wife and I decided to take my mom out for lunch on the great patio at Sharkey’s. Great lunch, conversation and weather, but what on earth did Delta do to the once-beautiful working harbour? I was horrified at what I saw. I have included two photos to illustrate the harbour today and the harbour when I lived in Ladner in 2004. These two photos were taken from almost the same spot on the government wharf of Ladner Harbour. The only difference is the time of day, sunrise versus afternoon. This shows what politicians and bureaucrats can do when they set their minds on tackling and cleaning up what they view as a problem. Typically what they accomplished was to take a vibrant working harbour and turn it in to an oversized ditch, bereft of interest. What do you think? Which shot is more inter-

esting? Personally, I’m appalled. This used to be my favourite spot to shoot when I lived in Ladner as it changed with the seasons. I say shame on the

Missed opportunity by not electing independent Editor: By electing the Liberal candidate in South Delta, instead of the Independent candidate Nicolas Wong, we just lost an opportunity to have real influence on the (new) B.C. government. If Nicolas had been elected instead, he would have had the balance of power in the Legislature as it turns out. With the present arrangement, announced on May 29th, the proposed NDP-Green

‘coalition’ will have the same number of members as the Liberals, (with the tie being broken by the Speaker). Our new Liberal (Opposition) member will thus have little influence on the new government. Had we elected an Independent member he would no doubt be a part of the NDP-Green arrangement, and thus would be hugely influential. South Delta would finally have had a voice in government for the first

time in recent memory - someone to speak up for our local issues, now largely ignored in Victoria, (and Ottawa). This election result is a sobering answer to all those fearmongers who insisted that we must vote for the governing party no matter who they run. An opportunity missed this time, but remember the lesson for the next election, which could be fairly soon. David Jones

Delta has been competing for the past 20 years as a way to test firefighters’ skills. They have had an incredible run of success qualifying through the provincial level for nationals for 20 consecutive years. This year’s nationals are in Ottawa in September. This year’s Delta team included: Jamie McGarva, Dave Mason, Rob Lemon, Mark Millward, Andrew Foreman and Steve Wood. “It’s good camaraderie with the guys. It gives us a chance to train as a team. The simulations we do in the race mimics a lot of what we do during our call-outs,” said McGarva. “It’s quite a commitment for training. If you want to be at the elite level the event hurts so much, you want to put some time into it.” McGarva said it is amaz-

ing to see what comes out of all the hard work. “It makes you appreciate how much training goes into this sport,” he said. “A lot of this is done off of work, but we are fortunate to have a great training facility at hall No. 7 — it is the exact replica of the course that we compete in.” McGarva credits Delta’s run of success to a desire to train hard, compete at an elite level and to be one of the best fire departments in the province. “I think that training is like a sickness and you have to train in a lot of pain to get to that elite level,” he said. “Yes the training is hard, but you also get rewarded for it, so we just have a strong mentality to want to do this.” McGarva wanted to recognize Westshore Terminals Ltd., Global Container Terminals, Reflex Tsawwassen Supplements, Lehigh Hanson, Gene Watt Realty and I Want to Own as their sponsors.

Charitable supply raise launches in Ladner Evolution Fulfillment heads campaign

A Delta company is looking for the business community to step up in a big way to help Canadian families in Nunavut. Evolution Fulfillment has launched a monthlong charitable supply raise from June 1 to 30 focusing on non-perishable items (canned foods, cereal, baking flour and baby food); toiletries (toilet paper, tooth brush, toothpaste, diapers, feminine toiletries) and clothes (adult, kids and infant tops and bottoms, socks and shoes). Evolution Fulfillment’s president Ben Martin and staff run the company’s charity Evolution Fulfilled

and are working with a group called Helping Our Northern Neighbours to support families in Nunavut. Evolution Fulfillment staff did a comparison and found that a typical basket of goods is 241 per cent more expensive for a family in Nunavut than for one in B.C. where incomes are 18 per cent higher. “We’ve been involved with doing some product raising within our business complex helping our northern neighbours in the past. We’ve had some great success and seen the difference it makes for the families in that community,” said Martin. “For the month of June we thought it would be nice to get the

entire Ladner community involved, businesses and residents, to see what we could do as a community to make a difference.” Evolution Fulfillment is encouraging local businesses in Delta to arrange their own mini-supply raises at their place of business for the aforementioned categories. Evolution Fulfillment’s staff will arrange pick up of the supplies from the business and then arrange for and pay for the freight to ship the goods to Nunavut. Evolution Fulfillment is located at 100 62B St. in Delta just past the Delta Town and Country Inn. See more about the campaign at: http://www.evolutionfulfillment.com.

New Day Gym hosts Strokes for Strokies fundraiser

Tsawwassen’s New Day Gym has come up with a unique program for the month of June that will pit athletes and the general public against each other to raise funds for the Delta Stroke Recovery Society (DSRS). Calling the program Strokes for Strokies, New Day Personal Training and Fitness is inviting participants to get their muscles into a rowing machine and a spin bike, to test their balance ability. There will be prizes at the end of the month. “We thought it would be a good way to work out, and at the same time to raise some funds for a very worthy cause,” said New Day’s Terry Day. “We’re hoping to

get widespread involvement from the community, by women and men of all ages, by competitive athletes and seniors.” For each of three categories entry is $3 or $20 for seven attempts, with 50 per cent of the funds going to DSRS and 50 per cent to the top two winners in each category. “We’re inviting unlimited attempts to rack up rowing meters, watts of energy on a bike, and time on balance equipment,” added Day. “Practice time is free, but competitive effort must be supervised by a New Day trainer.” New Day is located behind Save-OnFoods at 1077-56th Street. opportunities to share knowledge and experience with another generation of gardeners. “Through this program, volunteers can contribute to their communities by helping seniors continue to live at home and stay independent,” said Corinne Côté, Earthwise Society’s program coordinator. “For the seniors, it is a great opportunity to meet new people in their neighbourhood, to stay active and to continue to enjoy gardening.” If you or someone you know wants to get involved as a Garden Buddy, contact Côté at education@ earthwisesociety.bc.ca or call 604-946-9828.

The Tsawwassen Shrine Club will be busy serving up tasty meals at its 48th annual salmon barbecue Sunday at Ladner Harbour Park. The club will have 2,000 pounds of fish to cook up this year, says member Michael Cruise. He says he believes this event could be the biggest salmon barbecue in the Lower Mainland. “This is a thank you more or less for the community for supporting us, for supporting [our] community activities,” he explains. About 1,600 people came out to last year’s barbecue, he notes. The cost is $12 per person, which includes a piece of fish, coleslaw, French fries, a bun and coffee or juice. Pop costs extra.

Lots of salmon will once again hit the barbecue at the Tsawwassen Shrine Club’s annual event at Ladner Harbour Park. Each serving of salmon comes in at six to eight ounces, he says. “You get a good, fair

he Delta Concert Band and Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir are getting together to present a concert titled We’ll Be Seeing You next weekend. The concert, set to take place at the South Delta Baptist Church in Tsawwassen, will celebrate spring, says Delta Concert

Band musical director Jim Tempest. “It’s going to be a really fun show,” he says. There will be a mix of music at the concert including a medley of Second World War songs and a collection of hits recorded by the great Welsh singer Tom Jones, he notes. This show marks a homecoming concert for the Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir. The group

recently returned from a European tour that saw them travel through France, Belgium and the Netherlands, and collaborate with local choirs, explains music director Jonathan Quick.

The title of the upcoming concert is from a song titled I’ll Be Seeing You, which the band and choir will be performing together. Quick has also “re-voiced” the song. “It’s great to be work-

ing with the Delta Concert Band again. We’ve worked with them in the past and it’s a fun collaboration,” he says. The concert is set for Saturday, June 10 at 2:30 p.m. at South Delta Baptist Church, 1988-56th St., Tsawwassen. Tickets cost $29 for adults, $27 for seniors and $12 for students. Comox Valley brimming with fun LAUREN KRAMER

Victoria, Tofino, Parksville. If there are spotlight stealers on Vancouver Island, it’s this trio that garners all the attention. For road warriors who love to venture off the beaten track, this bodes well for the Comox Valley. On a summery weekend visit to Courtenay, Comox and Cumberland, we learned this verdant coastal region is an undiscovered treasure chest brimming with fun activities. Rich in history, what you see is what you get in the Comox Valley – and what meets the eye is unforgettable natural beauty, charming downtown cores, an emphasis on local, home grown cuisine and soft adventures through which you can taste, feel and touch the island’s bounty. My daughter and I took an early morning ferry to Duke Point, hitting the gas on Highway 19 North for the 80-minute drive from

the Duke Point ferry terminal to Courtenay. The largest of the three cities in the Comox Valley, Courtenay marks the confluence of the Tsolum and Puntledge rivers and sits in the embrace of a half-circle of mountains and a massive, flat-topped glacier, Queneesh. It’s a beautiful place, especially so when you’re out on the water. Our first morning in town we kayaked into the Courtenay River estuary with Mike White, a guide with Comox Valley Kayaks. Jellyfish and upturned clam shells floated by as we paddled gently towards the Comox Harbour and the Strait of Georgia. White gestured towards the banks of the estuary. “In low tide you can see the remains of fishing traps left by the First Nations thousands of years ago,” White remarked. They knew then, as locals know now, that the Courtenay River and estuary are thick with salmon at certain times of the year. In the fall the water churns

We returned to town in time to change footwear, grab a biking helmet and meet Laurel Cronk, owner of Island Joy Rides. With a trailer packed with brand new bicycles, road snacks, iced water and chilled towels, Cronk leads guided bike tours in the valley, gentle rides along country roads and bike trails with stops at various culinary destinations along the way.

Criss-crossing the rivers and pedaling past blueberry farms, you’re forced to slow down and get a different view of the valley. Our first stop was the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market, a colourful Saturday tradition where vendors sell fresh fruit, flowers, Comox cheese and bison yogurt. It’s a social place where folks are only too willing to ‘talk locavore’ and share their passion for what they grow and make. But the road was calling. There were bubbling creeks to cross, a swim-

his vessel’s engines as he prepared to head out on a sunset crabbing trip. Hopping aboard we basked in the late afternoon sunshine, passing bald eagles on deserted beaches, the heads of curious seals surfacing briefly to look around, and the rusted bellies of old vessels, deliberately sunk in a row to create a breakwater outside the harbour. A few minutes into our ride we were reeling in 150-feet of rope, at the base of which was a trap containing 16 indignant Dungeness crab, clawing crazily as they tried to resist the crab pot. Checking them briefly for size and sex, Danny’s co-captain, Pete, boiled and chilled those crabs before you could say ‘ahoy, mate!’ delivering a bucketful of crab legs to us for a fresh, waterside dinner. It was the perfect finale to a weekend drenched in sunshine, adventure and raw, West Coast beauty. Travel Writers’ Tales is an independent newspaper syndicate.

A few kilometers later we parked our bikes outside the fruit winery Blue Moon Farm, Winery & Ciderworx, tasting cider and berry wines paired with rich, dark chocolate. Behind the tasting room the blueberry plants were heavy with fruit. Down the road a bit further we were in the retail hub of downtown Courtenay, a threeblock radius of eclectic boutiques, home décor stores, clothiers selling the apparel of little-known designers and a shoe shop that dates back to 1929. It’s a charmingly fun centre to explore. A couple hours before sunset we were back on the road, this time behind the wheel of the car and on our way to Comox. Unhealthy symptoms can range from unwanted gas to inability to break food down without pain imbalances to a number of problems ranging from hormonal imbalances, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, eczema, rosacea, as well as a host of

What exactly is our gut, though? Our gut (gastrointestinal tract) is the long tube that starts at the mouth and ends at the back door of our body (the anus). The major players of our gut are the oesophagus, the stomach, the small and large intestines, and the anus. Dr. Susan Steeves, naturopathic doctor at South Delta Integrative Healthcare (southdeltaintegrative.com), says first and foremost we need proper gut health in order to absorb the nutrients that are in the foods that we eat. By absorbing our foods properly, we are able to produce the energy needed to live. A healthy gut will also improve our moods, ensure our body is in good repair and boost our immune function. Science has linked gut

Well on Your Way P.J. WREN

I believe that gut health is a topic you are going to see a lot more of in the news. Gut health and our general health are interconnected, but, not where if one is healthy the other will be healthy as well. Instead, it’s our gut we need to keep healthy in order for the rest of us to be healthy. If our gut is unbalanced, our health will be impacted.

How can you tell if your gut is unhealthy? Steeves explains that the symptoms of an unhealthy gut can range from unwanted gas to a complete inability to breakdown foods without

A healthy gut will also improve our moods, ensure our body is in good repair and boost our immune function. other chronic health problems. Dr. Heli McPhie, naturopathic doctor at the Village Clinic (thevillageclinic. com), believes that restoring intestinal health is a vital part of restoring overall health. It’s so important that she asks almost every patient about their diet and gut health.

pain and discomfort. The most common symptoms include gas, boating, reflux, and irritable bowels. However other symptoms, not necessarily thought as food-related, include headaches, joint stiffness, fatigue and frequent colds and flus to name a few.

To maintain a healthy gut both Steeves and McPhie stress the importance of a whole foods diet, from a variety of sources. There are also specific foods that can help heal and support the gut. Some examples are fermented foods including yogurt, kefir, kimchi, miso, kombucha and sauerkraut. Steeves recommends if you haven’t tried these foods before to start with small portions and work your way up. McPhie goes on to explain that she doesn’t believe taking handfuls of supplements is the answer either. Start with your diet. Keep it clean and your gut will thank you. And this makes sense because in the end we are ultimately what we eat, so if we eat crap, we should expect our body’s to run likewise.

McPhie also asks her clients to chew their food properly (because your tummy does not have teeth), and to eat slowly and enjoy mealtime. Eating too fast leads to gas, bloating and cramping, while not chewing your food properly can cause digestive problems. Think of chewing your food as the first step to proper digestion. And if you are still experiencing symptoms book yourself in with a naturopath and your doctor. I find a mix of both naturopathic and Western medicine a great way to address health issues. Tsawwassen’s Warren Dean Flandez will join the Good Noise Vancouver Gospel Choir for the group’s Soul Gospel II concert tomorrow in Vancouver. “I am extremely excited and honoured to be this year’s featured guest at Soul Gospel II,” he says. “I am a huge fan of Gail Suderman and her Good Noise Choir and I can’t wait to collaborate with them.” A release notes he’ll perform his own original work as well as hits made famous by artists Al Green, Stevie Wonder and Sam Cooke. The choir unveiled its first Soul Gospel event last year and it was a huge success, says artistic director Suderman. “Both gospel and soul music draw the listener in with fervent call and response, improvisation and powerful vocals,” says Suderman in the release.

This is the fifth year that we, at Tsawwassen United Church are presenting an Arts Fair Weekend to celebrate local art forms and the artist and artisans behind the work. It has been a joy to meet the people of our communities that seek to give creative expression to the world. We really do have a richness of gift and a wealth of ability in our communities. Art is an aspect of the creative process and has historically been used as a teaching tool, an inspirational visual engagement, a practical expression of inner conviction and so much more. Since art offers the invitation for ‘transformation’ of heart, mind and spirit, that

became the name of our annual weekend event. What is art for you? We would love to open the opportunities to share the stories, hear the questions and engage the conversations with artists and

artisans in the community of South Delta. It seems to me that these kinds of engagements take us into deeper and more meaningful expressions of who we are as individuals and members of society seeking to live well together. Conversation that matter, recognizing the work of God’s Spirit within us. It is through conversations of mutual interest that we come to know each other in ways that allow for our differences of opinion to be approached with genuine respect and a deeper level of understanding. I you have a free moment this Pentecost weekend come and enjoy the Art and some good conversation.

A total of $50,000 was distributed to organizations in North America this year from UAB, the national social campaign of Safe Fleet, provider of safety solutions for fleet vehicles, and its subsidiaries. “Our United Against Bullying initiative is truly allowing us to make a difference and network with community heroes like the Reach Child and Youth Development Society,” said Bismeyer. “Their efforts to educate with inclusiveness and compassion are a perfect match with our belief that Kindness is Cool.” The UAB funds will help Reach complete the playground at their new children’s development centre currently under

Tsawwassen Rotarians jump to raise funds to fight Polio

Four members of the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen literally jumped for dollars raising $7,000 for the Rotary Foundation jumping out of an airplane last Saturday. With matching grants from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the $7,000 raised will turn into a $21,000 donation towards ending Polio. These funds help to

immunize close to 21,000 children against this horrific disease. Shane Todhunter, Vickii Paramanathan, Elizabeth Wagner, and Randy Bilesky took the courageous leap with the support of Skydive Vancouver’s staff. “What an exhilarating way to support a cause I care so much about,” said Todhunter after he landed, adding he would love to

do it again. The Rotary Club of Tsawwassen partners with various international organizations to eradicate Polio. As of June 2014, there are only three countries in the world where there are still cases of Polio reported each year. Rotary’s goal is to see polio wiped from the face of the world within the next few years.

Delta Health Classic set for June 15 at Springs

Fundraiser tourney sponsored by Century Group

The Century Group Delta Health Classic is set to take place Thursday, June 15 at Tsawwassen Springs. Now in its 18th year, the sold-out golf tournament is one of the Delta Hospital Foundation’s biggest fundraising events, having raised $1.7 million to date. This year, 150 business and community leaders will tee off in their fiesta-themed attire for a fun day of golf in support of prostate and general cancer care at Delta Hospital. This year marks the third year of Century Group’s five-year title

sponsor commitment. Over the last 25 years, Century Group has donated over $1.8 million to Delta Hospital. The development company has supported capital campaigns, donated funds for priority medical equipment, including the CT scanner, and has made contributions towards Delta Hospital’s Greatest Needs Fund. “Giving back to the community is a huge part of who we are as a company,” says Century Group president Sean Hodgins. “We continue to be proud of the work we do and are proud of the support we

give to Delta Hospital.” As title sponsor, Century also brings an army of volunteers to support the tournament. “We gratefully acknowledge the immense support we receive from Century Group. Their enthusiasm and sense of community is beyond compare,” says Delta Hospital Foundation executive director Lisa Hoglund. “We simply couldn’t reach the same fundraising heights if it wasn’t for them and the many generous businesses in our community that make this event shine for our hospital.”

Early Termination under the Local Government Act: Provisions that came into effect in 2014 amended the Local Government Act to provide for termination of existing land use contracts on the earlier of June 30, 2024 or an earlier date set by the local governments. Where the local government wishes to exercise the early termination option, it must: 1. Adopt a bylaw that specifies the effective date of termination, which must not be sooner than one year from adoption of the bylaw. 2. Ensure that there is zoning that would apply to the affected property when the land use contract is terminated; and 3. Hold a Public Hearing on the proposed termination bylaw after first reading of the bylaw and before third reading. The proposed land use contract termination bylaws (Bylaw Nos. 7647 and 7648) include a date of termination of June 27, 2018, which would be more than one year after the proposed date of adoption of the bylaws. Underlying zoning that would apply to each property when the land use contract applicable to it is terminated is identified in the tables of subject properties above. Additional Information Additional information, copies of the bylaws, supporting staff report, and any relevant documentation may be inspected until Monday, June 12, 2017. Track and field teams from South Delta and Delta Secondary Schools trained together this season on the SDSS Oval which is need of an upgrade to at least be the level of competitive high school standards again.

Trying to get on the right track High schools overcome limited training options to send athletes to provincials MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Is it time for Delta to catch up with the rest its neighbours and have an up-to-date 400-metre running track? A contingent of teacher, parents and students from all three local high schools certainly think so. South Delta Secondary, Delta Secondary and Southpointe Academy have athletes participating in this week’s B.C. Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships. Their journey to Langley has taken more than just reaching qualifying standards. The three schools come together for regular training sessions at the SDSS track — the only option that at least has a hard surface in Tsawwassen or Ladner. The 400-metre oval has not been renovated since being built for the 1987 B.C. Summer Games and now is essentially asphalt. The cost to install a new polyurethane surface would be in the neighbourhood of $500,000 — certainly well out of the reach of any school board budget. The DSS oval has a gravel-like surface that is adequate enough for the annual Ladner Elementary Schools Track Meet but not safe for high school athletes to train on. It’s a similar scenario in North Delta. Meanwhile, neighbouring districts such as Surrey (Bear Creek/South Surrey Athletic), Richmond (Minoru) and Coquitlam (Town Centre) all have competitive quality tracks. “The sad reality is we are travelling to Coquitlam for zone meets because nowhere in Delta is there a track up to the standard it

needs to be,” said South Delta teacher Gatlin Saip who helps run the SDSS program with parent volunteer Jodi Bonikowsky. “It’s the biggest challenge we have faced over the years. Lots of kids are interested in track and field and there is lots of potential and talent in this community as the (provincial qualifying) has proven. What we lack is the facilities and the resources.” Katharine Bubel has been overseeing the DSS track and field program for the past four years. She initially approached athletic director Shell Thompson regarding the interest of starting up a team when her son Dylan wanted to continue competitive running after doing well at elementary meets. Today, he works with local coach Malcolm Smillie and

Delta Secondary’s Hanna Hansen has qualified for three events at this weekend’s B.C. Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships including the 80m hurdles.

plans to continue at the university level this fall at UVic. “There was no coach at the school and I did some background work to see what was required to have a team,” recalled Bubel. “At the time, I thought there was just a couple interested in doing it but the school put out an announcement and lots of kids showed up.” The DSS team was invited to train at SDSS but the inconvenience of travelling to Tsawwassen hurt the overall numbers. Among those that did continue was Grade 10 student Hanna Hansen who has qualified for three junior events at provincials despite the limited training options. “Katharine took the time to register all of our kids and without her there would be nothing (for DSS students),” said Hansen’s mom Tammy, who has also helped Bubel out with the program. “My daughter likes to do multiple events and mostly YouTube videos have been her coach. Occasionally coaches from other districts will take pity on us. They see the natural athletic ability and want to see our kids succeed. But in some cases we don’t have the equipment either.” It ultimately could take a collective effort involving the municipality, school district, service clubs and even the business community to at least get the SDSS track renovated to today’s standards. “It’s an opportunity for the entire community to come together, added Saip. “I drive past this track every day and there are always people here. Everyone would benefit from it.” Athletes head to provincials

DDRC rowers make waves at Shawnigan Regatta A contingent of 18 junior athletes from the Delta Deas Rowing Club returned home with six medals, including three gold, at the 57th annual Shawnigan Lake Regaatta on Vancouver Island. The Novice duo of Rachel Mehling and Jessica Lawrence earned a bronze medal in the Junior ‘B’ (under 17) Novice Girls 2x. The pair then joined Mckayla Cowie, Caitlin Lawrence and coxswain Julia Moniz-Lecce to capture the Junior ‘A’ (under 19) Novice Girls coxed quadruple sculls event. A strong performance for these four as their Novice eligibility reflects they have been rowing competitively for less than a year. Meanwhile, the crew of Jon Hodgins, Stuart Velestuk, Logan Krezin and Quinn Torol won for the second time this season, capturing the Junior B Boys quadruple sculls. Hodgins and Velestuk also won silver in the Junior ‘B’ double skulls. They each added third medals in singles events with Velestuk winning gold in the Junior ‘B’ JV Boys singles race and Hodgins capturing bronze in the Junior ‘B’ Boys 1X event.

Sun Devils’ Fayle leads local contingent headed to track provincials A trio of South Delta Sun Devils will be medal contenders at this weekend’s B.C. Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships. Jack Fayle will be among the favourites in the 400 and 200 metre events after finishing first and second respectively at the Fraser Valley Championships. The Grade 12 standout will be continuing his track career at Simon Fraser University this fall. Madelyn Bonikowsky will be looking to continue

her dominance in the Grade 8 girls 400, 800 and 1500 metre races. She won all three events at the Valley Championships to earn aggregate honours. Her brother Jacob Bonikowsky broke the provincial record in his second-place finish in the Grade 8 boys 1500 metres. He was also second in the 800 and third in the 400. Meanwhile, Delta Secondary’s Harvir Pansesar is seeded No. 2 in the Grade 8 boys 100 metres and No. 3 in the 200.

Here are the other provincial qualifers: South Delta: Alex Lamyin - Grade 8 boys 200 metres. Delta: Hanna Hansen - Junior girls long jump, shot put, 80 metre hurdles; Reiko Bomhert - junior girls javelin; Brennan Katsube - junior boys 800 metres. Southpointe Academy: Katelyn Croy- Grade 8 girls high jump; Nadia Rai - Grade 8 girls high jump; Kaylie Borntraeger, - Grade 8 girls 200 metre hurdles, triple jump, long jump.

Passed away in Kelowna, BC peacefully with family by his side. Survived by his Mother, Donna McOuat, Sister, Lisa Truczka(Mike, Charlotte & Ryan) Uncle Daryl (Auntie Joyce, Doug & Shari) Uncle Waldi, Auntie Marga. Predeceased by his Rawlek, Step Father.

Father

Horst

Mueller,

Our Grama Sheila became an angel, the same way she lived her life; with her hair done, lipstick on and nails freshly painted. Sheila died peacefully surrounded by her family at Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner on May 24, 2017. Grama, our beauty queen and former “Miss Comox Valley” embodied elegance, grace and class with a panache for tying pearls.

Bill

Roy accomplished a lot in his life. He loved the outdoors, and was an avid hunter, dirt biker, fisherman, welder and a mechanic. He was training as an apprentice Gasfitter at the time of his accident.

She is now happily reunited with her husband Frank and eldest daughter Julia. Missing her deeply are her children and their loving spouses Larry (Levern), Gina (Ernie) and Julia’s spouse Garfield. She was a cherished Grama to Kristin (Terry), Garrett (Christine), Shane, Shannon (Matthew), Ashley and Kelsey. Audrina, Ella, Roman and Evelyn will forever miss Great Grama Sheila’s endless hugs, glass rocks and salmon sandwiches. Sheila and Frank had a love that was passionate and endured for 62 years. They set the example for our family as to what it means to be “In Love” and to “Be Loved”. In her later years, Sheila’s happiest moments were spent tending to her flowers and lounging on the patio but above all else, doting on Frank.

Family was extremely important to him and he loved Ladner where he grew up. He will be fondly remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. We wish to thank all the staff and residents of Avonlea Care Home for all the love and care over the last 23 years. Thank you to Dr. Ronald Schriemer, for his care and support as Family Physician. Roy will be at peace now enjoying his days racing down the road in his beloved Chevelle SS. No Funeral by request. Donations of your choice to a charity in lieu of flowers.

Her happiest fulfillments were her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Our visits always included platters of salami and spicy cheese, endless bowls of Pringles and a chilled glass of white wine. The room was filled with laughter over the stories and adventure of our days.

You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence at the family’s on-line obituary at www.MyAlternatives.ca. Cremation arrangements entrusted to ALTERNATIVES FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES ® Lake Country 250.766.4400 Vernon 250.558.0866 & Armstrong 250.546.7237

Sheila wished not to have a service. Instead take a moment to remember a fond memory of your time together. Better yet pour a glass of white and sit in the sun “as a little color on your cheeks is okay”.

Your gift assists the Foundation to purchase vital medical equipment for Delta Hospital. Working Together to make a Difference!
