Delta MP Carla Qualtrough learns to lawn bowl under the watchful eye of Ladner Lawn Bowling Club president Garry Parenteau. The 100-year-old club hosted a Centennial Celebration last Saturday that included invited dignitaries as well as presidents of other lawn bowling clubs.
Peppers will be replaced by pot at a large and wellestablished greenhouse in East Ladner. Village Farms International announced this week it has formed a joint venture with Emerald Health Therapeutics, a B.C.-based licensed producer of medical cannabis, to cultivate and distribute wholesale cannabis and cannabis extracts for medical purposes. Also, if permitted by law, the operation plans to grow pot for “non-therapeutic” purposes. “To us, this is just another agricultural crop and if it’s a legal agricultural crop, we have to look at it,” said Village Farms CEO Michael DeGiglio in an interview with the Optimist. “We don’t foresee any major challenges on the growing side. If you are a food producer like Village Farms and some of the other large producers that grow food, our food safety programs are impeccable. I think it’s the same methodology we would use going forward.” Village Farms is initially allocating 25 acres of its Ladner Trunk Road greenhouse for can-
nabis production. The joint venture also outlines an option to lease or purchase an additional 85 acres. The initial 1.1 million square feet of greenhouse cannabis production is estimated to yield more than 75,000 kilograms of

product annually. Village Farms notes the joint venture has the potential to have up to 4.8 million square feet of greenhouse production, estimated to yield more than 300,000 kilograms of product annually, which the company says would supply a considerable portion of the expected future cannabis demand in Canada or for export abroad. Man rescued off Mt. Baker
Ladner’s Ron Veperts suffers only concussion after 90-foot fall into crevasse IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Ron Veperts is thanking his lucky stars after a skiing accident last Sunday afternoon that saw him fall into a 90-foot crevasse on Mount Baker. The 58-year-old from Ladner, an experienced skier and outdoors enthusiast, was with a group skiing the volcano’s western slopes and was descending the main climbing route on Coleman Glacier when he got into trouble. He said there were nine people in the party and they had broken into small groups for the descent. “I just made a judgment error and skied a little bit in the wrong direction and before I realized it I was in a bad situation. My ski pre-released and I slid into
the crevasse,” Veperts said. “It was a bit foggy and I didn’t notice that crevasse on the way up, so it didn’t register coming down.” He said when he hit the crevasse he thought it was over. “I was bouncing from side-to-side, but I had a heavy, padded pack on and my helmet, so it was just pure luck. The pack probably saved me from some serious injuries,” he said. “It’s pretty frightening when you are lying there in the dark and you have no idea how badly injured you are, but fortunately I was able to move everything. When I heard them calling for me, I called back and it was a relief that they heard me.” Veperts said another group that was climbing
and skiing in the area saw the accident and immediately came to the group’s aid. “There were two other guys and they took control of the situation and got me out,” he recalled. “I was OK and walking, but then I passed out because I had bumped my head pretty good. When the rescue team arrived I was coherent, but they gave me a shot and all I remember was waking up in the hospital.” Veperts was treated at St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham before being transferred to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. He ended up with a concussion and bruising, but no broken bones. “I’m very fortunate,” he said.
Whatcom County Undersheriff Jeff Parks said they received a 911 call at 3:43 p.m. Parks said the caller was able to hike to an area with cell phone service to tell them that Veperts had been removed from the crevasse, but was unable to make it back down the mountain. “Once we had all the information, we dispatched the naval rescue team into the area,” said Parks. “From what I understand it was a pretty routine rescue call.” Parks said Veperts was certainly lucky. “It’s a wilderness, backcountry area that people will trek, climb up the glacier and then ski down. You always run the risk of natural hazards down the mountain,” said Parks. “It sounds like between the
ski party he was in and the other group, who I believe were from Portland, they had the means to get him out right away.” Mike Welding, public affairs officer for Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, said the challenge with the rescue was flying at high altitudes. “One of the things our crew did before they took off was remove gear that they wouldn’t need to allow them to get more power in the air,” said Welding. “It seemed to go pretty standard once they got there and were able to get him into the litter and into the helicopter.” According to the Bellingham Herald, Sunday’s accident was at least the third incident in the North Cascades in the past two weeks.

Tableau system provides officers instant access
IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
A recently developed reporting system is allowing the Delta Police Department to be on the cutting edge of technology as it finds better ways to fight crime. A team of officers has developed the Tableau reporting system over the past 18 months. Insp. Harj Sidhu said the department recognized the importance of having metrics that allow officers to see what’s going on in a quick and efficient manner. Sidhu said Tableau allows officers to take information from within PRIME (the department’s primary computer database) and put it into an effective display format. The information is broken down by location and incident descriptions and then is updated onto an online mapping system. With a few quick touches on their computer screen, officers can get access to crime statistics, and detailed information on specific files, specific to any area in Delta.
“This is a tool that our officers can utilize in a real-time fashion so they can make informed decisions,” said Sidhu. “If our officers are approached by a citizen, they have this tool in their car and have the ability to see what is going on and provide that information very quickly. “We have rolled it out to our patrol division and the feedback from our officers has been great. We built this for $10,000 and it’s our system. We’ve had a couple of agencies approach us because they recognize that it is easy, so we are very excited about where we can go with this.” Sidhu, business analyst Candace Danielson and patrol analyst Jody Johnson, along with Chief Neil Dubord, recently presented the system to the Delta police board. “As you know, our model of community policing is something that we cherish deeply here in Delta,” Dubord said. “What is important with all models of community policing is that we are intelligence-led.”

Businesses that AHS Tax Group
With a combined experience of
more than 75 years working for Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), the founders of AHS Tax Group understand the complexities of sales tax. “We specialize in helping businesses recover GST and PST that may have been overpaid in error,” says Andrew Adolph, CPA CGA, General Manager of AHS Tax Group. “Many business owners don’t realize that by going back four years, as allowed by law, the potential for recovery is huge.” Along with the experience comes a confidence that AHS will find an overpayment, or the bill for their services is free. “It’s rare that we don’t find anything,” Andrew explains. “As businesses grow, we often find that they don’t have the resources or expertise necessary to recover overpaid taxes. Sometimes it’s a case of just not claiming the correct eligible amount of GST paid, or the accounting software is calculating the wrong rates, or an inexperienced bookkeeper. Whatever the reason, we can help.” AHS Tax Group can also help companies that deal with cross-border sales tax issues. “We can assist businesses in making sure that their cross-border transactions are structured properly to make them eligible to claim any legitimate input taxes,”

Andrew says. “We make sure that any transaction can stand up to CRA scrutiny, so the owner can sleep at night without worrying whether the correct tax has been paid.” AHS Tax simplifies the procedure for clients by performing the work outside of the business. “Typically, all the work is done on computers,” Andrew explains. “That means that we don’t need to interrupt the client’s daily operations. We can take their records and perform the work offsite.” For more information about AHS Tax Group and their commitment to find overpaid sales tax or their services are free, call 604.200.5418, visit the website www. ahstaxgroup.ca. Mayor says many concerns must be sorted out
CONTINUED from Page 1 The goal is to be the lowest-cost cannabis producer in Canada. Health Canada still has to approve the medical marijuana part of the operation, while the venture could be a huge one for recreational marijuana production if the Liberal government follows through with plans to legalize pot by next summer. Noting it still has to be determined what portion of the Delta operation would be dedicated to medical pot and how much could be for the recreational market, DeGiglio said the plan could involve the complete conversion of the Delta facility if everything falls into place. He said the additional security systems would be the biggest change in the operation, but no one would notice on the outside, except for a secure fence. DeGiglio noted his company’s excellent and longestablished reputation as a grower well positions Village Farms to enter the marijuana sector. “We’ve looked at this market for years. Initially
FILE PHOTO
This 2014 photo of site manager Adrian Simkins gives some perspective on the scope of the Village Farms greenhouse operation in East Ladner. we saw who entered the market upon the government deciding cannabis can be grown medicinally… we said it’s just a matter of time until what we deemed real companies with real track records,
with history of 30 years like us, publicly traded, that know what we’re doing, that are at a whole different level of professionalism, will come in,” he said. Village Farms says the
joint venture will bring sustainable economic growth to Delta and contribute 100 times the current property tax. However, Mayor Lois Jackson, saying she only learned of the plan
Tuesday, said there are many questions and concerns that need to be sorted out on the provincial and municipal level if pot is legalized for casual use. “It’s been very much on our radar and we went
to Ottawa and met with Health Canada on this whole issue. We took our police chief (Neil Dubord) with us because it was very much on the front of our minds how this was going to work,” Jackson said. “What are the requirements going to be by the feds relative to a licence? How many licences are being given out? How much production can each one make? We have to get rules and regulations straightened out in accordance with what the people in this community want, including the farmers.” The province had blocked part of Delta’s new zoning bylaw prohibiting medical marijuana production on agricultural land, although growers will have to pay an industrial tax rate. It was over a decade ago when Delta was bitterly at odds with the provincial government over the construction of greenhouses on good, arable land in the Agricultural Land Reserve, a dispute that resulted in the province passing an order-in-council blocking Delta’s ability to stop their construction.

Water slide park set to make Big Splash
Renovated facility welcomes guests Monday IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
It’s time to make a Big Splash. Big Splash Water Slide Park, the re-named and extensively renovated Splashdown Park, opens Monday to school groups with a full public opening set for Saturday, June 24. The seven-acre water park at the Tsawwassen First Nation will introduce newly renovated pools and hot tubs, a new clubhouse, Vegas-style cabanas for private parties, BV’s Sports Bar and Grill, new landscaping and a new park layout. The park is also adding a daily complimentary shuttle service to and from Downtown Vancouver. “Our goal is to give people a water park experience that they will want to experience over and over, especially since we are so close to anyone in the Lower Mainland,” said Big Splash general manager
Harold Frederiks. “We are building on top of the foundation that Splashdown built, and are adding a whole new look and feel to the water park for 2017.” Last September the taps were turned off at Splashdown Park for what appeared to be the final time. But in January, Executive Hotels & Resorts announced the park would be re-opened as Big Splash Water Slide Park as a new destination attraction. All-day passes are $28 and special group rates are also be available. Admission is free for children three and under. The park will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Friday from June 12 to 23 and then from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week starting June 24 until Labour Day. “We are not just catering to the locals here in Ladner and Tsawwassen, we are catering to the whole Lower Mainland,”
Frederiks said. “We are looking at being a major destination for entertainment, shopping with the new mall and golf at Tsawwassen Springs.” Phase two of the project will see new slides in 2018 and phase three is the opening of a boutiquestyle hotel in 2019. “This is a whole new attraction. We are trying to get our feet wet with new ownership and we are really trying to find out what works best for everybody. We think we have set a very reasonable rate for people to be entertained for the whole day. We have so many cool things going on here. When we open and when people come through the gates, I think they will be amazed at the facility and what we have to offer.” PHOTO BY GORD GOBLE

Murphy’s Law

efore the New Democrats have even had a chance to make good on an election promise to eliminate bridge tolls, the region’s mayors have started down the road toward mobility pricing. So much for the idea of giving commuters a break. It was strange that both the Liberals, who pledged to cap tolls at $500 annually, and the NDP, who one-upped their opponents by promising to scrap them entirely, would wade into the issue during the recent election campaign knowing that Metro Vancouver mayors are desperate to come up with a funding source for billions worth of planned transportation improvements. After the failed TransLink plebiscite of a couple of years ago, it was no secret that the region’s mayors would be giving a hard look at some form of road pricing, an approach that would run contrary to capping or eliminating tolls, which means while one level of government looks to put money back in driver’s pockets another is figuring out a way to extract it. A benign sounding term, but one that could ultimately prove costly for commuters, you’ll hear a lot about mobility pricing in the coming months after an independent commission was launched earlier this week by the region’s mayors. There’s still much to be examined and sorted out, but essentially the idea would be to charge drivers for using existing roadways and crossings, likely at certain times of the day, in order to raise money for transportation projects while reducing congestion in the process. Given they’re touting the need for fairness, I suspect the commission will suggest using a broad brush, targeting commuter routes throughout the region to not only ensure drivers are treated equally, but to also help fatten coffers. I imagine the tolls would be structured in such a way as to provide incentive for off-peak travel, which would spread out traffic volumes in a bid to relieve congestion while we wait for additional infrastructure to come on stream. It makes sense to have those that put the greatest strain on the system pay the most, but the mobility pricing road we’re about to go down has its share of potholes, most notably the idea of drivers paying a toll to use a road or crossing that can be navigated for free today.
Minority government forces politicians to work together
W
ith the legislature being recalled on June 22, B.C. can expect big changes and a new government following the soon to be former premier’s Throne Speech. The direction of our provincial government has shifted for the first time since 2001 and it will impact everything from Site C and Kinder Morgan to election finance and childcare. However, one issue could change the very way that we select our governments: proportional representation. My only question is: What do they mean by proportional representation? Our current “first-past-thepost” system makes it far too easy for a party to capture the full power of a majority government. This is especially true in a place like B.C. where the next largest party only gets 16.8 per cent of the vote. This has effectively left us with a two-party system, like the one that elected Donald Trump to the south. There are many variations of electoral systems in use around the world today. Yet, I do not think that I have heard anyone try to explain or argue for the merits of any of them. The proposed NDP-Green coalition has stated it would hold a referendum on the issue in the

2018 municipal election. This is in spite of a single transferrable vote system being rejected in two previous elections. I understand why; it is extremely complicated and it would be difficult for a voter to predict the impact of their vote. There are two things you want an electoral system to do: provide a locally accountable representative and ensure the result of the vote determines the balance of power. I believe a mixed member system can accomplish those goals. That means there would be two kinds of MLAs elected, those directly representing their ridings and a number of seats doled out to parties based on the percentage of the popular vote they receive. We currently have 87 ridings. If we consolidated the ridings with the smallest populations that the
B.C. Liberals protected to give them an advantage in this election, that would result in 79 ridings or eight extra seats. If we do not want to spend more money on our politicians, we could reduce their salaries to $80,000 and add another 23 MLAs. That means there would be 31 unaffiliated seats that could be apportioned based on the percentage of the popular vote parties receive. This means that the Greens would have received an additional five seats based on their proportion of the popular vote. We would still have an accountable representative in our ridings, and the balance of members in the house would more accurately represent the will of the voters. Add more seats to taste. During the election campaign, I said that a minority government would be the best outcome for British Columbia because it would force our representatives to work together to determine what is the best course of action through discussion rather than by proclamation. I pray that I was correct in that prediction. Community advocate Nicholas Wong ran as an independent candidate in Delta South in last month’s provincial election. He finished second with more than 6,400 votes.

Shocked by 14% increase in tax bill
Editor: I received my 2017 tax notice along with a letter from the mayor indicating that taxes in Delta had increased by 2.75 per cent. I was somewhat shocked then to discover that my property taxes had increased by 14 per cent from the previous year. I’m sure many folks in Tsawwassen will have had similar or higher increases in their taxes. Obviously somewhere in Delta the taxes must have decreased considerably if the tax increase averaged out to 2.75 per cent. In Tsawwassen most of the assessments I checked on BC Assessment’s E-value website had
increased by 50% to 60% from 2016. I appealed my assessment in January on the basis that all of the properties in my neighbourhood that sold in 2017 sold for between $20,000 and $200,000 below their 2017 assessed values. My appeal was not accepted so I paid $30 and took it to the next level, where I discovered that all they were offering was a teleconference with a couple of BC Assessment property assessors who, of course, disagreed with my reasons for wanting a reduction in my assessment. I gave up. It wasn’t worth all the hassle since I was only asking for an
adjustment of 5.8 per cent, which would still have resulted in an increase in my assessment of 46.2 per cent. In my research I discovered that BC Assessment used the monthly published figures for the benchmark selling prices in Tsawwassen to try to explain the assessments on July 1. They sent me a graph showing these prices peaked around July 1 and decreased for the following months in a classic bell curve. Unfortunately this meant they still used the peak figures for our assessments even though the benchmark price had decreased by about
$92,000 by December. I would argue this is not a fair way to arrive at the assessed value of a home; it would make much more sense to use the average value rather than the peak value. If property values had continued to increase at a steady rate over the whole of 2017, then our assessments would still be based on the value on July 1 but this would equate to the average increase over the year, not the peak. Last year was an unusual one and the assessment authority should have taken this into account instead of just raising everyone’s assessment by 50 to 60 per cent. Don Christie
Greens deserve a greater voice at the table
Editor: Re Strange times, Murphy’s Law, June 2 It’s true that proportional representation would give the Green Party a substantial number of seats, probably leading to no one party having a majority of the seats. However, proportional representation is the only fair and just way
to go. First past the post leads to situations like the Greens, where 17 per cent of the popular vote gave them less than four per cent of the seats. This is in contrast to the Liberals and NDP, who, while gaining only three-and-a-half times the popular vote, won about 14 times as
many seats. This is not true democracy and leads to parties gaining 100 per cent of the power with less than 50 per cent of the popular vote. Detractors of proportional representation will bring up the spectre of fringe parties wagging the tail of the dog. This can be prevented by requiring
parties to either win a seat or to get at least five per cent of the popular vote. The present system denies representation to a significant number of voters. These voters, who make up 17 per cent in the case of the Greens, are denied any more than a few seats at the table. Daryl Sturdy

Third party helps restore balance to democratic system
Editor: Re: What kind of democracy is this?, letter to the editor, June 2 I must take issue with E. Graham’s letter. I would say that true democracy has just been returned to the electorate of B.C. Before this last election we had one party in power and the other in opposition, which essentially is
like a dictatorship in that you have one party asserting complete authority over policy regardless of what the electorate or the other elected officials want. That was evident with the lack of funding to schools, our health care system, increased taxes and the public unable to exert any pressure on the
sitting leadership. And let’s not forget the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project as it is being touted. From out of the blue our last government announced a new bridge without proper public consultation. Don’t get me wrong, a new crossing is absolutely essential, but without due process the public feels
Nothing picturesque about derelict boats
Editor: Re: Horrified with state of harbour, letter to the editor, June 2 I can sympathize to a certain extent with the writer’s feelings. Derelict fishing boats and rotting docks are picturesque. But a number of the boats in his photo sank and were removed at great cost to taxpayers. The commercial salmon
fleet has been greatly reduced due to a number of reasons that readers will be familiar with. People take on unlicensed former fishing boats, not knowing the expense and work involved in maintaining them. They are often abandoned. If they are left, they sink and the fuel and engine oil end up in our sensitive
river estuaries. Just out of view of his photos is a working fishing harbour and the Ladner Harbour Fisher’s Committee, with the full co-operation of the Corporation of Delta, is doing its best to keep it a working harbour. Jim Nightingale Chair Ladner Harbour Fisher’s Committee

Feds must buck up for bridge Province was built on big endeavours
Editor: Re: Uncertain future for bridge, June 2 Next year the new bridge from Windsor, Ontario to Detroit, Michigan is expected to start construction and your readers are paying for it. The new Gordie Howe International Bridge will cost around $4.8 billion and the current federal Liberal government has committed to pay for all of it. To be fair, this crossing is the busiest trade crossing in North America.
However, it seems that when it comes to paying for a new bridge spanning Canadian water, the Fraser River, the federal Liberal government is uninterested. In March, Liberal Delta MP Carla Qualtrough told Delta council that the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project won’t be getting an investment from the federal government. While the current Delta to Richmond crossing may not be as busy as the Windsor to Detroit cross-
Editor: Re: Uncertain future for bridge, June 2 So one of the pretenders to the provincial throne says he will leave the decision on the new bridge to the mayors of all the municipalities as part of a consultation on a regional transit plan. And the second pretender to the throne says the bridge will only cause congestion at the Oak Street Bridge.. something a second tunnel won’t cause because the Oak Street Bridge will magically have gained greater capacity.
ing, it is a vital transportation route for commuters, commercial traffic, ferry traffic and emergency services. Current estimated tunnel volume is 80,000 vehicles daily and it is known as the worst bottleneck in the province. This will only grow with continued development on both sides of the Fraser River. I ask Qualtrough and her federal Liberal government to find the money to invest in our new Canadian bridge, eh. Keith Munro

It is important to understand that when leading a province it is essential for a leader to grasp some of the broader issues of B.C. — international trade and economic security are a couple — and not devolve responsibility to those with parochial interests when it suits their needs. It also requires they not latch on to illogical arguments that would nullify the need for any infrastructure at all. The George Massey Tunnel, built almost 60 years ago and ironically has us today debating a new bridge,

Horse and Humans: A Special Bond for all Ages!
Beginner to advanced - All levels welcome - All abilities welcome
By Candice Miller of Pony Pals Riding Stables
Riding Lessons from age 3 and up!
It’s a magical thing, that bond that occurs between a child and their horse, something which words cannot describe effectively, but you can recognize immediately. It becomes a core part of the child’s identity, an amazing connection, a piece of completion found through an unusual best friend- a large, loving kind equine. Quietly whispered words of love into a fuzzy perked ear, arms wrapped around the heavily muscled neck, and the look in the horses eyes that says “I love you, I understand you, and I totally accept you as you are.” There is an accepted truth amongst even the smallest children of three who come out to our stables for their weekly ride: their pony loves them the best, that he is the best pony in the world, and that he would prefer to sleep at the foot of his rider’s bed!” It’s not quite enough to ride a pony, and not even to own a pony, but it might even be best to BE a pony! Many little girls and boys can be seen cantering around their house, practicing jumping over furniture scattered throughout the living room. Riding day is always the highlight of the week, with the clothes often laid out the night before. As they grow up into an age of school stresses, and greater awareness, into the world of structure and expectations, riding takes on a different meaning: the child arrives at the barn and immediately begins to relax and refocus, a whiskery kiss and a shaggy hug makes manageable the problems of the school day. Confidence is rebuilt, and the child feels accepted in the stables welcoming community: after the ride, the knowledge they have a place where they are always successful carries them forward to the next week. In the teen years, the need to have the equine bond intensifies. In a tumultuous time of their life, teens look to their horse for strength, unquestioning acceptance and support, quietude and stability. The horse and their barn friends become a “constant” in their life, a place where they can be guaranteed success through dedication, learn responsibility, and be thoroughly gratified by the experience. The huge amount of respect, adoration, admiration, responsibility and commitment required to create and maintain this attachment is intense, and is an important life skill. The only thing greater is what the horse gives back to the rider: self-confidence, security, unconditional love, joy of life, inner peace and a sense of selfworth. To know that no matter what happens, there is someone who loves them, needs them and will always be there for them, no matter what the outside circumstances of life bring. The horses only expectation is to be treated fairly, be loved in return, and an occasional carrot! As an adult, riding takes on an entirely different meaning: it’s a time where the rider can just relax, focus on their own goals, and put all the problems of family, work and stress away. The barn is a sanctuary for the entire family, an emotional safety zone, and a place where dreams really can come true. A place where all those who share this passion for horses can congregate with the same mutual need: To be with their horse, because they’ve been dreaming of him all day! Pony Pals offers riding lessons for all ages and abilities, and for entire families to come and ride together. We are currently offering a special promotion to new riders to our stables. Book a Get Started Program or an Evaluation Lesson, and receive your first four group lessons at half price! We are also booking our children’s summer camps, which are an amazing introduction to the Love of Horses! Call us at 604-590-0097, or check out www.ponypals.ca for more information!
was built with foresight, giving us the opportunity to live and thrive south of the Fraser River. This province was built on big endeavours — a rail pass through the mountains, a dam and major highway connector — and it needs leaders who are up to those challenges. Right now it looks like those wanting to make a naked grab at power had better get acquainted with their new robes so they don’t become two wishywashy managers of the province. Murray Pratt

New normal has a

Daughter opens up about life with a father suffering from dementia
I
wrote this story over a year ago. It is my account of how life is with my father, who suffers from dementia. Time has passed and the days are sadly not as sweet as they once were. My father has grown more frail with less memories to grab on to, which really just confuses him and makes him more anxious. Since first writing this story I have taken a course offered in South Delta by the Alzheimer’s Society of B.C. The course offered me insight, information and I should even say “respite” for my mother, who took it with me. We met many people like ourselves. We learned there are other people out there like us. This actually brought us a lot of comfort. My mom is my dad’s primary caregiver and with this disease that has now become a 24/7 occupation.
April 2016
Andrea Christian Optimist Contributor
My story about dementia and my dad may start off as a bit of a downer, but honestly, today, I feel content with the new normal since I have accepted his diagnosis. I think we are coming full circle. Several years back, my dad suffered some mini strokes that were diagnosed as transient ischemic attacks or TIAs. The doctors believe this is what led to his diagnosis of vascular dementia. At the beginning of me understanding this disease, selfishly, I am pretty sure, I just cried when I thought about it. I didn’t want to lose my dad or for him to lose his memories. My dad is the same strong guy that taught me and my sisters to ski, gave us a love for the outdoors, taught all of us about rocks, geology and how the mountains in front of us formed. (My father was a geological engineer who had worked all over the world.) I know little about the road my father, mother and I are going down, and we are learning every day. Early on, before my parents moved to Boundary Bay, I remember visiting their home in Tsawwassen, and walking in to see my father sitting in the dark. He was at his kitchen table, crying. My father never cried. He was alone, just sitting there with no lights. I put the light on and gave him a hug. He told me he was confused. He told me this confusion made him anxious. Time did what time does with this disease and it was hard to see what once was my big, strong dad, and his memories, slowly slipping away. It was a slow process of acceptance for everyone, even for the doctors it would seem, to come to an understanding of what was actually happening to my dad.
I never know and still to this day find it difficult if I he was a small child. His mind now is more like that should let the neighbour dropping over “know” about of a youngster. He collects rocks and driftwood from my dad and his memory. I think to myself, “What the the beach and he brings them back to his house. He hell is the etiquette on this for my father’s sake?” These tells me he is making something beautiful to give my days, I see people’s compassion for him, or lack of it, in mother. full view. I do think it’s funny his spoken French sounds better than I can ever remember. Whatever memory is looped, and that he is trying to share with the world, he repeats. I remind myself this is the first time, again, in his mind that he’s telling the story to me. And for me to remember that -- with patience. Actually, even writing this and rereading it, it seems he is worse than he actually is. Here is the turnaround in my story and why I feel I am lucky. I was sitting at a bench on the dike enjoying the cool of the evening. A flock of gulls flew over. Then a huge flock of birds swarmed over the water in amazing patterns. Then I noticed a swarm of bugs circling a few metres from where I was sitting. Creation is hardwired for community. We just naturally group together in flocks, swarms, herds, tribes, clubs, gangs, teams or congregations. We seek companionship, belonging, identification. There is power in community. Years ago someone spoke to me out of deep pain describing his aloneness. He said, “I’m not talking about just being lonely. I am alone.” Perhaps you can relate.

the church to be a place of hope and belonging. Most metaphors for the church in the New Testament reflect community. If you want to explore the things of God, or if you want to grow in your relationship with God, church is vital. There is great value in exploring our faith together. One passage in Scripture that speaks to the power of community is: Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. (Hebrews 10:24–25, NLT) See you in church.

he Ladner Village Market kicks off a brand new season Sunday. The popular event draws big crowds to Ladner Village as marketgoers can visit many vendors, local merchants and enjoy live entertainment. Sunday will mark the start of its 21st year. The market is full for the summer, says Tracey McKnight, one of the organizers. “We’ve [got] a great, outstanding lineup of people coming into the market,” she says. Many vendors have been in attendance for a good number of years while McKnight says there’s also “lots of newness coming in.” The open-air market spans three blocks on 48th Avenue from Elliott Street to Delta Street. It runs rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with seven dates in total for the season. Market dates fall on the second and fourth Sundays of June, July and August, as well as the second Sunday of September. McKnight estimates about 60 per cent of the vendors attend each market while others choose

From wood art and survival gear to dog leashes and pottery, there’s a wide selection of goods, including bedding plants and hanging baskets. Some of the newest eateries are featuring Mexican fare, French crepes, Ukrainian perogies and samosas, she says. Other food selections will include freeze dried fruits, local beef and chicken, juices, frozen

nicely,” McKnight says. The market celebrated its 20-year anniversary last year and organizers are looking forward to starting this new season. “All of a sudden it creeps up on you. The weather has been a little cooler and all of a sudden you realize ‘OK, the summer has come.’ June has arrived and we’re on top of things now. South Delta Secondary students will take to the Equinox Theatre stage next week for a Cabaret Festival. The two-day event will feature performances from musical theatre, drama and vocal jazz students and will be produced by stage craft students. “There’s something for everyone. There’s so much that we’ve been working on for months,” says Grade 11 student Brooke McCarthy. She will take part in three performances, including a one-act play called Look Me in the Eye and an improv piece with the SDSS improv team. “It’s been a lot of work but it’s been a lot of fun as well,” she says. Alexandra McKinnon, also in Grade 11, wrote a script with her twin sister that they’ll also act out together at the festival. Liv and Eva’s Final Mission is

Crowds filled Gallery 1710 last Thursday evening for the opening of Oil & Water, the South Delta Artists Guild’s 14th annual juried show that includes the best of B.C. and Washington state artists’ work. Entries numbered 314 and were evaluated by three jury members from the Canadian Federation of Artists. Colour and content of the 83 paintings that made the cut are artfully displayed and tagged with 14 awards provided by sponsors. Everything from realism to abstraction has been on the easel. Christina Shalaby’s Out of Darkness receives best in show and a $1,000 first prize. The painting of a leopard uses a technique called scratch art in which a black surface is gradually changed to black and white by painstakingly making each mark to form the picture. Shalaby took

this one step farther by colouring the work with acrylic inks. As of June 4, five paintings have found lucky buyers, including the leopard and Faith Love Robertson’s Winter Mist, a glowing oil of a misty morning that received second place. The show runs until June 24. The public is invited to visit the gallery, 1710-56th St., Tsawwassen, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday and Thursday until 8 p.m.

With season almost over, Sidekick readying for fall
The Sidekick Players are saying goodbye to their 20th season with audience favourite Jenny’s House of Joy and hello to their 21st season with auditions for Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me. Jenny’s House of Joy, a Norm Foster comedy, is the story of four women who work in a brothel in Baxter Springs, Kansas in the late 1800s. The play stars Sidekick regulars Lisa Gach, Emile Greene, Carol Jones, Kathryn Stewart and Marcia Strang. It runs until June 17 at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre with 8 p.m. performances on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays as well as a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, June 11. Written by Frank McGuinness and directed by Carroll Lefebvre, Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me will open Sidekick’s 21st season this fall. The story focuses on an American doctor and an Irish journalist who
give way to an acknowledgment of their characters, strengths and weaknesses. They learn that humour is their surest weapon against their captors and the safest armour to protect themselves. Auditions being accepted for Delta’s Got Talent at Sun Fest
Looking to showcase your talent? Delta’s Got Talent, a competition for local youth, will take place at this year’s Tsawwassen Sun Festival. “It’s for the kids. It’s local. ers, including duets, musicians, dancers or “whatever your talent is,” says Bach. Selected semi-finalists will showcase their talent at the Sun Festival on Aug. 6 while the finals are set for Aug. 7. Bach says there will be a winner chosen in a 13 to 15 age group and another in the 16 to 19 age group. Auditions can be sub-
mitted via YouTube link, USB or CD. Those interested in taking part are asked to send in their submissions by June 28. The Delta Pacers capped a memorable season in grand fashion by capturing gold at the B.C. High School Ball Hockey Championships in Surrey. The three-day event attracted 18 schools from throughout Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Although not sanctioned by B.C. School Sports, the tournament was run by the B.C. Ball Hockey Association, similar to how B.C. Hockey also oversees the provincial high school ice hockey championships. The Pacers headed to Surrey having just been edged out in the Delta High School Ball Hockey League championship game by Southpointe Academy. They more than made up for it in a big way. A perfect 3-0-0 run in preliminary play included wins over a trio of Surrey schools — Fraser Heights (5-0), Kwantlen Park (7-0) and Johnston Heights (4-2). The finale saw Delta erupt for all four goals in the final six minutes to clinch top spot in its pool group. It was then off to the quarter-finals and a nailbiting 4-3 win over Queen Elizabeth. The Pacers allowed a two-goal lead to slip away but regained their composure to win in

The semi-finals put the Ladner school up against Surrey league champions Surrey Christian. A defensive struggle saw the teams tied at 1-1 when the Pacers struck for a pair of quick goals with less than four minutes remaining. An empty-netter sealed a 4-1 victory. The perfect six-game run was completed with a 4-3 victory over Prince of Wales. The Vancouver school would not quit and stayed within striking distance but could not overcame the Pacers’ best performance of the season. Jack Kraemer scored
twice to seal tournament MVP honours. He finished with 12 points in six games, including three goals. He played on a line with Jordan Bogress and Brennan Gaytmenn which combined for 21 points. This is the second season DSS has run a ball hockey team. Each time, the Pacers have been a finalist in the Delta league. All but two players graduate. “It was a true pleasure to coach this group of fine young men the past two seasons,” said DSS vice-principal John Pavao. “Many of them are multisport athletes, honour

They also have served as a big buddy or mentor to the Grade 8 students this year and assisted in their transition into high school.” The roster also included: Kyle Ainge, Jeevan Bath, Dylan Bubel, Daniel Carter, Tyler Falcade, Jared Garcha, Brennan Katsube, Jason Leitner , Keaton Mann, Jordan Payne, Connor Sagert, Ryan Sawyer, Riley Sherwin, Noah Shumka, William Spencer, Brett Thomas and Carter Warn. “Truly a special group and I enjoyed my time with them at the rink or in the
gymnasium when we practiced,” continued Pavao. “I want to thank them for the positive contributions they made to the school as students and for the passion and pride they had while representing the school as a hockey team. “I wish them all the best in their future endeavours and look forward to our future encounters when we can relive the special journey and championship.” The coaching staff also featured DSS vice-principal Dean Eichorn and teacher Todd Allan. Manager and support staff included Tyler Jones, Quinton Bianchini and Scott Wilkinson.

A bright future for local athletes was on full display at last weekend’s B.C. High School Track and Field Championships in Langley. South Delta Secondary, Delta Secondary and Southpointe Academy featured some outstanding performances as track programs at all three schools built momentum despite limited nearby training options. In total, the schools combined for seven medals — all at the Grade 8 level. Highlights included SDSS twins Madelyn and Jacob Bonikowsky winning three medals, including silver for Madelyn in the girls’ 1,500 metres. They nearly added another with Jacob placing fourth in the 1,500 after his bronze in the 800 metres. Delta Secondary’s Harvir Panesar solidified his status as one of the top up-and-coming sprinters in the province with bronze medals in the 100 and 200 metre events. Southpointe’s Kaylie Borntraeger struck silver in the girls 200 metre hurdles. At the senior level, South Delta’s Jack Fayle reached the final of the 400 metres, placing fifth in a time of 50.63 seconds. Here is a rundown of the medal winners and other notable finishers: Silver Medal Kaylie Borntraeger (Southpointe Academy) Grade 8 girls 200m hurdles. Madelyn Bonikowsky (South Delta Secondary) Grade 8 girls 1500m. Alex Lamyin (South Delta Secondary) boys 400m. Bronze Medal Alex Lamyin Madelyn Bonikowsky (South Delta Secondary) Grade 8 girls 800m. Jacob Bonikowsky (South Delta Secondary) Grade 8 boys 800. Harvir Panesar (Delta Secondary) Grade 8 boys 100m and 200m. Top 10s Jacob Bonikowsky (South Delta Secondary) 4th place, Grade 8 boys 1500m. Kaylie Borntraeger (Southpointe Academy) 4th place, Grade 8 girls long jump. Jack Fayle (South Delta Secondary) 5th place, senior boys 400m. Riley Gookstetter (South Delta Secondary) 7th place, junior boys shot put. Alex Lamyin (South Delta Secondary) 9th place, Grade 8 boys 200m. Meanwhile, local schools also produced some impressive results at the recent B.C. Elementary Schools Track and Field Championships at Minoru Park in Richmond. Southpointe’s Anna Stefanovic captured gold medals in the 11-year-old girls 200m, 600m and 1,000m. She also added a bronze in the 100m. Beach Grove Elementary’s Ella Hewitt earned silver in the 11-year-old girls 600m.

Vivia was born in Consort, Alberta to Charles and Bertha Bryan during the height of the Depression and grew up in Whonnock, BC. For many years she lived in Matsqui Village where she served as the local Postmaster and raised her two fine boys. In 1986 she and Frank built their dream home in Ocean Park, South Surrey where they hosted many happy family events, including her yearly Easter Egg Hunt in their big backyard (rain or shine!). In 2015 Vivia moved to Ladner to be closer to her family. She will be lovingly remembered for her generosity, sense of humour and wonderful creativity that produced many stuffed critters and beautiful quilts. A gathering of her friends and family will be held at the Delta Funeral Home in Ladner, BC on Friday, June 16 at 2:00 pm. Remembrances would be appreciated to the BC Cancer Society or the Delta Hospital Foundation. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946.6040
Ivan was born on October 14th, 1949 in Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia to Donald and Isabella Royan. He graduated from the University of Queensland in April 1973 with a Bachelor of Surveying. Ivan was commissioned as a Land Surveyor of Queensland in 1974 and started his career with the government of Queensland. He immigrated to Canada in October 1977 and married Val in Inglis, Manitoba later that month. Ivan and Val moved to Vancouver where Ivan gained employment with Underhill & Underhill, and received his BC Land Surveyor commission in 1979. They would soon after make their home in Tsawwassen where they would raise their two sons. In 1996, Ivan gained his Canadian Land Surveyor commission, and served as President of the CLS Association from 2013-2014. In 2002, Ivan and Val moved to Kamloops, and established their roots in their new community Working as a surveyor brought Ivan on many adventures, travelling through much of BC and the Canadian territories. He loved his work and loved sharing his passion of surveying with newcomers entering the profession. He was highly regarded amongst his peers for his hard work ethic, precision, and leadership. A Memorial service to celebrate Ivan’s life will be held on Saturday, June 17th, 2017 at Hills of Peace Lutheran Church, 695 Robson Drive, at 2:00pm. A reception will follow to gather and share stories of Ivan’s life at the Coast Hotel Kamloops. The family would like to express gratitude to Dr Proctor, Dr Van Heerden, and the staff of the Cancer Clinic at RIH for their care and support during Ivan’s journey. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ivan’s name to Hills of Peace Lutheran Church or the BC Cancer Agency. My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest. Remembering all, how I truly was BLESSED.
