Unique catch reeled in by Delta officer
Making a splash!
Police stop car masquerading as boat doing 130 km/h on Perimeter Road IAN JACQUES

Big Splash Water Slide Park opened its doors Monday by welcoming a number of school groups. Formerly Splashdown Park, the facility has undergone many changes since last year, including several new fountains in the Kid’s Splash Pad, with many more, including a boutique hotel, still to come. The park opens to the public on Saturday, June 24.
It is probably one of the most unique traffic stops ever encountered by a Delta police officer. On Wednesday morning while conducting traffic enforcement on the South Fraser Perimeter Road, an officer clocked a speeding vehicle at 130 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. When the officer flagged the driver down, he got quite a shock. “The car was covered in buoys, rope, cages — even a small boat motor mounted on the back,” said Delta Police Department public relations coordinator Sharlene Brooks. “I’m not sure what the officer was thinking, but I do know we would never had believed him had he not sent in the pictures.” Brooks said underneath all the nautical gear was a 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass with Washington state plates. She said the driver was handed a $368 ticket for excessive speed and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. The vehicle will undergo a proper inspection to ensure it is safe for the road. “It should be pointed out that the driver has the right to dispute the ticket should they wish,”

said Brooks. “But in all fairness, this was an excessive speed no matter what the condition of the vehicle was in and is clearly a potential risk to other drivers on the road. This is a unique story, but what is not unique is that this incident serves as a reminder to all drivers, no matter where they reside, to obey the posted speeds on our roads.” DPD posted photos of the car on its Facebook page, which has now been read and shared hundreds of times.

This house only costs $1 Owner is hoping to find buyer rather than demolish Ladner heritage home SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Another heritage home in South Delta is facing the wrecking ball. Delta’s heritage advisory commission recently gave the green light for the owner of the Wilson Residence, located in the 4800-block of 48th Avenue, to be demolished, provided a number of conditions are met, including advertising the building for sale for the sum of one dollar for a month. The owner, Amman Dhaliwal, purchased the rental home from a relative a couple of years ago and informed the commission the house has suffered extensive deterioration. A third party assessment also concluded the house could not be reasonably rehabilitated. The commission elected

structure. Community planning director Jeff Day told Delta council, “Unfortunately, the building is in sad shape.” A civic report notes
Delta’s updated heritage strategy and its associated initiatives will help avoid such neglect. The new bylaw would be a tool to require heritage buildings within heritage conserva-
tion areas to be be maintained and in good repair. The Wilson Residence, on Delta’s Urban Heritage Inventory but not a protected heritage building, was constructed in 1904 for Herbert Lyman and Susan Alice Wilson, who lived there until Lyman’s death in 1942. The house has had of variety of renters and owners since that time and is currently occupied by a tenant who has been renting it since the early 1980s. The house had a kitchen fire in 1983 and the owner at that time considered demolishing it but didn’t carry through. When it was evaluated from the exterior in 2000, the house appeared in good condition with no signs of structural deterioration. Now, however, it has a number of major problems.
Civic politicians approve new heritage strategy SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It may seem Ladnercentric but it’s a start. That’s how a new heritage strategy was summed up by Delta council members who approved the plan earlier this month. The updated plan has several overarching goals and 40 action items over a 10-year period, although a report notes the strategy does not commit council to undertake specific projects. Any heritage projects with budgetary implications would be brought
forward for council consideration and approval. It was back in 2012 when council approved a process to update the 1997 Delta Heritage Strategy and the heritage advisory commission has been chipping away at it ever since. Consultant Donald Luxton and Associates Inc. was retained to help complete the work, which involved community consultation as well as working with civic departments. One of the first action items to be undertaken is enacting a one-year
heritage control period for a defined area in and around Ladner Village. During this period, property owners will be prohibited from altering the exterior of a building or structure without a heritage alteration permit, although properties not on heritage inventories would be exempt. The municipality will also adopt a new heritage maintenance standards bylaw to protect the condition of any building that is affected by a heritage control period or in a heritage conservation area.
“The minimum maintenance standards are intended to ensure that property is not allowed to deteriorate to the point where it is no longer of heritage value. Failure of a property owner to comply with the maintenance standards could be enforced through fines and/or the courts,” the report states. The maintenance bylaw would not apply to all properties, the report adds. Delta will also establish a heritage conservation levy as a means to fund-
raise and distribute grants for heritage preservation. The new levy would be in the form of a five per cent heritage conservation fee added to all new building permits. Funds from the levy would be placed in a reserve fund for projects that, in council’s opinion, encourage the retention and maintenance of heritage properties. In 2016, Delta collected over $2.2 million in building permits. A five per cent levy would have resulted in the collection of over $111,000.

Transit plan adds, cuts and adjusts South Delta routes Public input being sought on Southwest Area Transport Plan SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
A proposed transit plan for South Delta has TransLink pitching both the benefits and what it calls trade-offs. The transportation authority is gathering feedback on the Southwest Area Transport Plan, which involves changes to the transportation network in Ladner, Tsawwassen, Tsawwassen First Nation and Richmond as well as connections to North Delta and nearby areas. According to TransLink, the plan will focus on improving transit service and infrastructure, but it includes reductions in some areas. In South Delta, the proposed changes include eliminating the 601 service for some neighbourhoods, rerouting it from 52nd Street to Salish Drive (48th Street) as more development occurs within the TFN. In addition to the loss of service on 52nd Street, trips to Boundary Bay will be discontinued, although customers would be able transfer to the C89. The C89 would see extended hours to offer service previously provid-
TransLink is proposing many changes for bus routes in South Delta. ed by the 601. Meanwhile, the 602 is to be cancelled because, according to TransLink, it duplicates local routing of the 601 and the 603/604 north of 12th Avenue. The 603, 606, 608, 609 and the C84 will also see some adjustments, while the C87 is to be cancelled. The changes include more service in some instances but in other
cases longer waits and walks to bus stops. Some of the other proposed changes include a new service from Ladner Exchange to Langley Centre along Ladner Trunk Road and Highway 10. Several Delta transit users at the Ladner Exchange Wednesday were asked for their thoughts on the plan but
only one, Bob Baro, said he was aware of the plan and what’s proposed. He said transit needs to be improved and not cut back in South Delta. Helene Irvins said it’s the first she heard of it and predicted plenty of people will be upset about the proposed change to the 601. She also noted there’s virtually no service where she lives in River Road West and that could be changed by extending the mini bus that currently goes through the TFN. She also said the bus service frequency at night in South Delta is terrible compared to other communities. Delta civic staff will prepare a report for Delta council examining the proposed changes. Over the past couple of years TransLink has made a number of other changes, including scaling back service in South Delta on the 606/608 and 404 routes. Residents have until Monday, June 19 to complete a survey on the proposed Southwest Area Plan. To get the survey and more information go to translink.ca.
TransLink representative to address Probus Club
Local transit plans will be the topic at the Probus Club of South Delta’s meeting next Wednesday. There will be a guest speaker from TransLink to provide an update on the Southwest Area Transport Plan. One key point to be discussed will be the 601 bus service to Bridgeport station.
Proposed changes include rerouting the 601 from 52nd Street to Salish Sea Drive (48th Street) as more development takes place at Tsawwassen First Nation, the TransLink website notes. The 601 service to downtown was discontinued after the Canada Line opened and now travel-
ers heading to Vancouver from South Delta take the bus to Bridgeport station in Richmond. TransLink is accepting feedback on the proposed changes via an online survey (http://www.translink. ca/swatp) which can be completed until June 19. The Probus Club of South Delta is a non-profit,
fellowship club for retired and semi-retired professional and business people. The meeting is set for 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 21 at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn. Members and guests are urged to attend the meeting to make sure TransLink has a clear picture of their concerns.

The fundraiser for the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue — Station 8 Delta will take place on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Deas Island Regional Park but ticket sales are already underway. The hope is to have 6,000 ducks race in this year’s event. First prize is a weekend getaway on Saltspring Island at Stonehouse Bed & Breakfast while second prize will be dinner for 30 from the White Spot On the Go truck. Ducks will be sold ($5 each) at the Ladner Village Market, which runs every second Sunday throughout the summer. Sponsorship opportunities are available. Groups interested in sponsoring the event can contact Robb Lucy at 604-8747700. Fire halls hosting open houses
The public will get a chance to get to know their Delta firefighters at a pair of open houses this month. The first open house is this Saturday at Hall 1 in Ladner with the second set for next Saturday, June 24, at Hall 3 in North Delta. Both run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The open houses will provide the public with an opportunity to meet Delta firefighters, see fire trucks and apparatus, and learn about fire and emergency services. There will be demonstrations such as wildland firefighting and auto extraction as well as family-friendly fun, including
a hot dog lunch. For the North Delta event, you can also experience what an earthquake feels like through the Shake Zone earthquake simulator. The Men in Black combat challenge team will set up their junior combat challenge course for junior firefighters to try out.

From its humble beginnings in the auxiliary gym of Tsawwassen Junior Secondary to its current home at the Delta Sport Development Centre in Ladner, Carlene Lewall has seen Delta Gymnastics evolve into one of the top clubs in Canada. After 38 years, Lewall, the director of marketing and physical literacy education, is retiring at the end of June. “I think the time seems right,” Lewall told the Optimist this week. “We have an amazing staff here. There are great plans in place and they have the tools to implement those plans. I’d like to be able to still help the club when I can, but I want to be able to do other things.” Lewall’s introduction to the sport happened by chance. She started
her career as a physical education teacher and part of her degree at UBC involved learning about gymnastics. “Fate is amazing. Sometimes you just left life happen,” she said. “When I started at UBC I never realized that gymnastics was a sport. I just loved it and felt if I ever wanted to share this with others I needed to have a great foundation of skills.” Upon completion of her degree, her first teaching posting was at Steveston Senior Secondary. At the start of the school year, some students approached her about starting a gymnastics club. “I thought that was pretty cool, but knowing that I was new to the sport I asked them who had introduced them and it turns out it was a teacher at Hugh Boyd,” Lewall recalled. “So I got linked up with Hugh Boyd
and we started this club at Steveston and some competitions. It was really great.” She stopped teaching when she became pregnant with her first

Gymnastics began. Karoline (Kari) Cullen, who competed with the UBC gymnastics team from 1971 to 1975, started the club in the summer of 1975. Four years later with the club starting to gain a foothold in the community, Cullen lost two of her assistant coaches to other opportunities. Cullen received a call from the Corporation of
Delta that the head coach of the St. Albert club wanted to coach locally. Serendipity. It was Lewall. “I love kids and my goal from the start was to see kids become the best that they could be and gymnastics is the medium to see that happen,” said Lewall. “The club has endorsed that and made that happen, so kids coming through here grow physically, but also mentally and socially. “Kari became a great friend. I’m really proud of what we, alongside all the coaches, staff, parents and the kids were able to accomplish. A lot of clubs don’t evolve or think outside of the box, but this club does. They have great ideas, a great energy to move forward and strive to be better every day.” Executive director Ana Arciniega said they could never replace someone like Lewall.
“Carlene has done everything for us. She will always be our leader in many ways. She is a phone call, or a text or an email away, so to still have her as that resource is huge for us,” said Arciniega. “She has coached, she has mentored, she led the fundraising and expansion efforts, she champions for our kids. Her work promoting the ideas of physical literacy is a legacy for sport in this community. I could go on and on about what she has meant to the success of this club.” Despite closing this chapter of her story, Lewall, a former Delta Citizen of the Year, plans to still be active in the community in her role as chair of Delta KidSport as well as through volunteer work with Tourism Delta, the Ladner Business Association, Delta Sports Council and the Delta Sports Hall of Fame.

hose dark clouds over Premier Christy Clark’s head could contain some thunder. Clark’s Liberal minority government is scheduled to deliver a Throne Speech when the legislature is recalled next Thursday, although her party’s tenuous grasp on power isn’t expected to last even a week before losing a confidence vote. Outlining a vision for the coming legislative session would appear to be a moot point given the circumstances, but it offers one heck of an opportunity. When no party was given keys to the province after last month’s provincial election, politicians of all stripes opined that voters had told them to work together, to put aside their differences and come to a mutual understanding for the good of British Columbians. After the NDP and Greens struck a deal to form a coalition government, the need to play nice with the Liberals disappeared, but Clark has one last chance to not only extend an olive branch but to poke John Horgan in the eye with it. What if the Throne Speech includes planks of the recently signed NDPGreen accord? How could MLAs vote against a legislative agenda they recently endorsed? Yes, it would be a bit of gamesmanship on Clark’s part, but should it be shot down, it would show, as if we needed any more proof, that power is far more important than policy. Don’t worry, the irony of the premier trying to hold onto said power with such chicanery is not lost on me. With that said, an opposition-friendly agenda, one that commits to an electoral reform referendum, which the Liberals have held before, and moves the election date to the fall, which just makes sense as Vicki Huntington long suggested, wouldn’t be hard to craft. If it also included eliminating big money from election campaigns it would demonstrate the Liberals are really ready to change. I remember years ago when, a couple of months before a municipal election, a slate of candidates seeking seats on Delta council unveiled a transportation plan. I can’t begin to recall the specifics of the plan, but I do remember a councillor on an opposing slate putting forward a motion that the idea was so good it shouldn’t have to wait until after the election to be implemented. There are certain times when it’s just too easy to steal their thunder.
Political will needed to address contentious land use head-on
L
and use and zoning are complicated issues across the board. Urban dwellers are often faced with development applications that require zoning changes within their midst that are not always welcomed or easily embraced. We can all think of several instances of this over the years in our communities. Local governments need to recognize and act on zoning densification opportunities in a timely manner to attempt to keep a vibrant local housing stock that will serve generations of families. In farming and rural areas in Delta and the lower Fraser Valley, we are often presented with perceived threats to our well-being and ability to feed ourselves through loss of farmland. I get that concern absolutely but I also see there has to some give on the land use issue. We need land for farmers to farm and we need land for housing and economic development. Compromise of the highest order is required to solve this puzzle. In this last provincial election (the one that may be continuing shortly), the NDP spoke more to the issue of housing affordability than the Liberals or Greens. This is a very real problem that does not appear to be going away any time soon. The NDP, however, is faced with a political dilemma with the

Agricultural Land Reserve — its creation — which is clearly a big elephant in the room. I like the idea of the ALR but at the same time see tracks of this land in southern British Columbia that are in proximity to urban areas that are underutilized and cost prohibitive for farmers to buy, clear and get crops growing. What provincial government will have the political will to address land use head-on so that families young and old can have a home without the cloud of food security looming in public and political consciousness? On the farming and food production front, our local producers are second to none but they need help too. Land trade-offs and financial support from governments will ensure there is a future for farming in Delta. Additionally, incentives from
all levels of government need to at least show a sense of promise for those who are and want to be engaged in working the land. Our farmers adapt to massive challenges and they will most certainly continue to do so. Yesterday there was an open house for the Farm Roots Mini School in Boundary Bay. A halfacre is in production with all kinds of crops on the go. If local farming is going to be a steadfast reality within our midst, there has to be a better understanding of land use issues here and elsewhere. Small-scale farming is not going to save the world but it is going to teach young people about the complexities of the food economy in the hopes the bigger picture is understood by progressive thinking younger generations who will seek opportunities to farm. If you want to support young farmers growing food right here, come down to Farm Roots during the summer to get your veggies. I will be down at the site pretty much every day with interns Allie and Jasmine and we have several ideas in store to offer our fresh student grown produce to you this summer. Stay tuned. Letters
Solutionfortunnelbottleneck has already been arrived at
Editor: Re: Bridge won’t solve woes, letter to the editor, June 7 So, Dr. Brad Davis opines that building a bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel will merely move the problem north to the Oak Street Bridge. He is obviously unaware that much of the traffic that flows, sorry oozes, through the tunnel on a daily basis does not nec-
essarily head for the Oak Street Bridge. Much of it heads towards the Knight Street Bridge and/or Highway 91. He then goes on to aver that “we need a comprehensive... solution” and couples that loosely to telling us that since the mayors who are not affected by the daily funnel through the tunnel oppose a bridge, we should not build a bridge. I think those who do
this snail-like commute on a daily basis would disagree that it is only the mayor who wants a bridge and a comprehensive solution has already been arrived at. The solution: build a bridge. And appending your honorific to your name gives your opinion no more — and no less — credibility than those who choose to remain comfortable with Ms., Mrs. or Mr., or no title whatsoever, so
No to bridge
Editor: The editor, the mayor and Ian Paton should acknowledge the fact that 55.9 per cent of South Delta voters did not vote for the BC Liberal Party or for the new bridge. Tom Carron you may want to leave that off next time. B. McKenna
Southbound traffic backs up daily and that has nothing to do with Oak Street Bridge
Editor: I have been reading a lot about people’s comments in regards to not replacing George Massey Tunnel with a bridge because they say the back-up is still going to happen at the Oak Street Bridge going northbound. No one seems to mention the traffic going
southbound that is backed for kilometres first thing in the morning with cars and trucks moving so slowly, polluting the air for hours while attempting to get through the tunnel. Then you see it again at 2 p.m. starting to back up again until the end of the rush hour with all trying to leave Vancouver/
Richmond via Highway 99 and the tunnel. I drive this tunnel every day and I can tell you with the increase in population south of the Fraser River we need to build this bridge sooner than later to increase traffic flow, safety and less pollution caused by back-ups southbound and northbound.
If you see what I see every day driving back and forth through this tunnel no one would ever disagree this crossing needs to be replaced. Let’s think about our children’s safety, increasing family time and less pollution so we can all enjoy a better life. Steve Hudye
Tree bylaw already too lax
Editor: Re: Tree bylaw changes needed, for safety’s sake, letter to the editor, May 31 E. Graham claims Delta has actually told him/her, “One tree every third year.” Nope, not true. Delta’s tree bylaw allows cutting one tree in every 24-month period. That translates to one tree every two, not three, years. Graham claims Delta “makes it impossible for property owners to protect their homes and
families.” Nope, not true. Not even close. The tree bylaws specify a myriad of conditions under which additional trees can be removed. Interestingly, one such condition is “the tree is high or extreme risk.” I do not believe our current tree bylaw goes far enough in protecting our trees, but thank goodness it protects us from people cutting down trees whenever they please. Educate yourself. Read your bylaws. L. Moses
Impressed by local air cadets
Editor: We had the pleasure of watching the local air cadet squadron perform its annual ceremonial review earlier this month. I can’t tell you how impressed we were with this group of young men and women. We were also impressed with all the things they were involved in. Some are interested in aviation and do pursue that with gliding, and flying scholarships, but others who are not, follow
their interests in first aid, biathalon, public speaking, camping and drill team, to name a few, not to mention their community volunteering. Our three children attended air cadets almost 40 years ago and we were so pleased to see that this organization continues to offer so much to our young. These are the future citizens we will all be proud of. Ian and Agnes Jackson

CARRIER OF THE MONTH CONGRATULATIONS
Jorja-Ray and Brady
Jorja-Ray and Brady have been doing newspapers their whole lives, literally since they were each born. From carrying door hangers to delivering specific houses, each child took on more tasks as their age, size and abilities allowed. Now for the past many years, Jorja-Ray and Brady have each had their own route, but they still head out together to deliver them. Brady’s favourite part is talking to all the amazing people along his route and Jorja-Ray loves the challenge of subbing on a route or approaching hers from a new direction. Both are very thankful for the kindness and generosity of the people on their routes. Thank you to the community of South Delta and to Delta Optimist for such a safe and encouraging way for young people to learn responsibility and to make connections with others in their community.
Tsawwassen Special Olympics athlete Kim Davies carries the torch last Friday afternoon as Delta police officers joined others from law enforcement agencies around the Lower Mainland on the final leg of the 2017 BC Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of Special Olympics B.C. The final leg included a run through Ladner to Delta police headquarters for a wrap-up celebration and barbecue. During the four-day event, 500 law enforcement members joined 80 Special Olympics athletes to run through 18 communities. Since 1990, the event has raised more than $3 million.

The club has done a plant sale for the last dozen years, an event that was getting bigger and bigger and required many volunteer hours, Sanders explains. “We just felt it was time to back off and take a break and relook at how we were doing the plant sale,” she says. The tour is self-guided and consists of 11 private gardens and the Secret Garden in Boundary Bay as a bonus, she says. Tour-goers “can go at their own speed,” she says. Former Delta councillor Wendy Jeske’s backyard shade garden in Tsawwassen is one of the stops on the tour. The large and mature
garden includes ferns, hostas and hydrangeas. “I think the highlight is probably the way we’ve gardened amongst these huge conifers, because a lot of people see these as an impediment and want to take them down,” says Jeske. There was no garden there when she and her husband bought their home almost 40 years ago. “I was working in Vancouver at the time. Every lunch hour I would drive around Oakridge and Shaughnessy and just look for gardens that I thought were really inspiring,” she recalls. She also researched the great British garden designers and was lucky enough to travel to Britain
and visit the Chelsea Flower Show. Jeske also credits Thomas Hobbs’ book The Jewel Box Garden as being her “go-to resource for imagination.” The tour is being presented in partnership with the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen. The garden club supports various community projects and will be making a donation to Rotary, Sanders notes. The garden club has donated to the Delta School District’s Farm Roots program, the Ladner Community Garden, the Secret Garden, the Green Thumbs program at the Delta Hospital residential care unit, the Healing Garden at Delta Hospital and the Memorial Garden
at Delta Secondary. The garden tour runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine. Tickets, which include maps showing garden locations, cost $15 in advance or $20 on the day of the tour. Tickets are available at Harris Nurseryland (6508 Ladner Trunk Rd.), Sunnyside Nurseries (2300-56th St.) and West Coast Seeds (4930 Elliott St.) until June 24. Tickets will only be available from Sunnyside Nurseries on the day of the tour. Ticket sales are cash only and the club asks no pets or children under 12 attend. Visit www.southdeltagardenclub.ca for more on the event and the local club.

OPEN WATER Never underestimate the power of current. Swimmers or waders can be swept away in an instant, particularly if non-swimmers or weak swimmers get caught by current in rivers or out of their depth in abrupt drop-offs.
Are there certain foods you should eat before a workout? Maybe some magic foods that will help fuel you and make a burpee feel, well, less like torture? There are, but first a quick (and basic) physiology lesson. From the moment you put food in your mouth it is being digested. The digestive process starts in the mouth and different macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein and fat) digest differently, for different jobs in the body. A carbohydrate-rich food (such as bread, cereal, fruit) gets broken down into the simple sugar glucose for your muscles to use as fuel. Muscles run first, and best, on glucose. A protein-rich food (such as Greek yogurt, meat, eggs, protein powder) is used to build and repair the body tissue, while a food high in fat is dissolved first in the intestinal cavity and then carried on from there. Each of these macronutrients are important for good health. However, when it comes to preworkout nutrition there are two that reign, and a surprise that has science scratching its head. First, if you need a snack before a workout aim for one that has both carbohydrates and protein. The carbs will help fuel your muscles and the protein will aid with recovery. Stay away from high-fat foods as they could cause cramping. Some easy solutions to a pre-workout snack could be: yogurt and berries, a hard-boiled egg and an apple, banana with some peanut butter. How close to a workout should you have a snack? About 45 to 60 minutes beforehand, but play around with that. There
Well on Your Way P.J. WREN
are many people I know that can’t workout with food in their stomach. A couple of things to watch out for during your workout, which are usually food triggered, are nausea and dizziness. If you start to feel nauseous during your workout, chances are you ate too close to your session. If you begin to feel dizzy, or lightheaded, you ate too early. Different workouts also call for different ratios of carbs and protein. For example, long cardio workouts (like training for a marathon) need a higher carb ratio and should be eaten at least 45 minutes before you lace up your runners. This will give the body enough time to breakdown the glucose found in the carbs and get it loaded up in the blood stream, so when your runners hit the pavement you are fuelled and ready to go. Cardio workouts that are under an hour don’t really need a snack, providing you are eating properly throughout the day. Workouts that are strength-based (like weights, circuits, boot camps) aim for a snack at least 45 to 60 minutes beforehand with 20 to 25 grams of carbohydrates and 10 to 18 grams of protein. Again, though, if you are eating healthy enough throughout the day, and you are exercising for bet-
up to 50% OFF
ter fitness (as opposed to a competitive sport), you really don’t need anything before your workout. The latest research and buzz in the gym? Cardio workouts in a fasted state. These are workouts that are done on an empty stomach and are gaining in popularity. Research is now suggesting that if you’re trying to lose weight doing a cardio workout in a fasted state (i.e. as soon as you get up in the morning) allows you to burn more fat. This is because first thing in the morning, after fasting all night, your body’s natural hormones have the perfect profile for fat loss. Your insulin levels are low, your blood sugar is low (forcing the body to draw on its fat reserves) and your growth hormone levels are at the highest they will ever be when awake. All of this makes for the perfect fat-loss storm. But there are many experts that disagree and urge people to work out with something in their stomach. Fasted cardio training is new and will need time to pan out with science. My advice: do whatever will make you work out. I do at least twice a week cardio workouts fasted. It works for me. I also know of a lot of other people who prefer an empty stomach when exercising — for the simple fact that a workout feels better without food sloshing around in the gut. Bottom line: keep moving and keep moving daily — with or without a snack. PJ Wren is a local personal trainer and writer who also owns The Studio in Ladner. The art of watercolour on display at guild exhibition LAUREL JOHNSON
Optimist contributor
Watercolour painting is considered one of the most difficult to master. The painter must remember to save light colours because it’s difficult to get them back once they’ve been covered with darker paint. Paints have been “fugitive” in the past, but modern chemistry has come to the rescue and paint is now light fast, allowing the pieces to remain vibrant for years. There is the added problem of framing with reflective glass in an age when there are huge windows in most apartments and houses. The South Delta Artists Guild’s current Oil & Water show features several pieces done in watercolor that catch the eye. A whimsical piece entitled Therapy Session by Viena Wroblewska, which shows two smiling ladies enjoying their wine, was painted in a traditional way and

He taught people about God’s love, he proclaimed God’s kingdom that would come if we followed his way and he cured those who were wounded and through it all he had compassion for the crowd around him. This was Jesus’ safe place… amongst the children of God. Perhaps the next time we are in our “safe place” we will sing our songs of God’s love, fill our hearts with prayers of compassion to God who smiles upon us.

Have you ever noticed how busy people are while driving to work in the morning? I have seen men shaving, women applying eye make-up and children in the back seat making the most extraordinary faces as they pass by. None make me smile, though, like those who “sing like no one is watching.” There is a freedom in our cars to simply be who we are — as vain or as complex as we wish. I wonder where societies of old found their “safe space?” Dare I ask the question: “What would Jesus do?” I guess Jesus’ song-book would be the Psalms of the Hebrew Scriptures and his

T
hese are the principles shown time and time again by Carlene Lewall’s dedication to Delta Gymnastics Society for the past 38 years. “Delta Gymnastics was four years young in 1979 when Carlene and her family moved to Tsawwassen. She had been the head coach at the St. Albert Gym Club in Alberta and asked Delta Parks and Recreation about coaching gymnastics in her new community,” remembers Kari Cullen, Delta Gymnastics Society founder. “I was looking for someone to coach with so I was thrilled when the head of Parks and Rec let me know about Carlene. What a fortuitous
phone call! With her on board, Delta Gymnastics would grow and develop in ways I never dreamed of.”
And that’s where, over the next four decades, Carlene started making her mark in this town. “As Delta Gymnastics grew, we moved from the auxiliary gym at Tsawwassen Junior to the gym at SDSS and then to the South Delta Recreation Centre. Competitive programs expanded to include boys and recreation programming ranged from Tiny Tots through to High School” explains Cullen. “Those gymnasts and parents
from the 1980s will remember perhaps not all that fondly, setting up and taking down the equipment almost daily in the hall. The dream of a permanent gymnastics facility gained momentum. Carlene was at the forefront and lobbied tirelessly on behalf of the Society. In 1993, DGS moved into its own facility at the South Delta Rec Centre.” It was not until June 25, 2001 that the real mark Carlene and Delta Gymnastics had made in the community became evident. A devastating arson fire that damaged the facility and equipment at the South Delta Rec Centre brought a halt to further expansion plans. “There was already a need back then to have a larger facility to accommodate the growth and demand of programs, so fundraising was well on its way towards this goal,” explains Ana Arciniega, current Delta Gymnastics Executive Director. “The community rallied behind Delta Gymnastics and very soon after the fire, and for

the next 8 months that it took to repair the damage, the programs were relocated to two facilities. There was hardly a break in operations thanks to the amazing support received and the funds that came through quickly to ensure DGS was back on its feet.”
This was a direct testament to the impact, importance and reputation Delta Gymnastics had in the community. And this didn’t stop Carlene’s efforts to continue with the dream of growth.

“For years, Carlene championed a vision for gymnastics programming focused on kids and an expanded sport centre for the entire Delta community.
She rallied support for this incredible project not only from parents, but politicians, business owners, community leaders, and volunteers alike,” recalls Mark Friesen, Delta
Gymnastics Executive Director from 2008 to 2012. “Her steadfast pursuit for this centre made the project possible, at a time when consultants, advisors, and politicians said it wasn’t feasible.”

Your community. Your hockey team. It’s a simple message the new president of the Delta Ice Hawks wants to convey. “This team has a great history in this community. When we walked the streets during the Ladner May Days parade and heard hundreds of kids saying ‘Ice Hawks’ you realize the support that is out there,” said Eduard Epshtein. “The plan is to reach out to the community further and bring in (more) minor hockey teams. Also, to enhance our volunteer experience as well.” Late last season, the club launched a community club that welcomed minor hockey teams to home games where they received VIP treatment. The package included a visit to the team dressing room to not only meet players and coaches but also learn of pre-game strategy. Youth season passes, a mini-game between periods and a Ice Hawks T-shirt were also included. It’s a program Epshtein hopes more teams from Delta’s two hockey associations will take advantage of. “The parents and even grandparents come too,” he said. “They not only get a presentation on the game plan but also get to know the history of the league and, for a lot of then, it’s an eye-opener.” The Ice Hawks have been a step-

The league also is a chance to play junior hockey and keep post-secondary education the number one priority. “It’s an opportunity to play junior hockey at home and not be billeted when you are 16 or 17,” added Epshtein. “You also can balance your education. We have lots of talented kids not just on the ice but off of it too. Kids who go on to become lawyers or doctors and they can still play junior hockey in
their own community. The Ice Hawks have begun preparations for their 21st season in the Pacific Junior Hockey League with a prospects camp at Tilbury Ice. The week-long sessions featured four full teams and wraps up tonight with an all-star game. Delta is coming off an outstanding campaign that culminated by losing in six games to the Aldergrove Kodiaks in the PJHL finals. The Hawks will be among the championship contenders again under PJHL coach-of-the-year Darren Naylor.
“Every year we have taken the next step. This is the third one and we’re going to be ready,” smiled Naylor. “I’m really excited about our blueline right now. I thought it was probably our weakness last year because we didn’t have the depth. This year, I think it will be the best in the league. “These are kids who would have played last year if we could (have signed) more than two 2000s (born players). “Now I can sign all of them. They are not super big but they are fast and mobile. “It’s going to be a fun team to watch. People should be excited.”
U10 Rams capture bronze medal at flag football provincials
South Delta Rams were provincial bronze medal winners in Kelowna.
The South Delta Rams proved it’s the size of the heart that matters, not the size of the roster, at B.C. Community Football Association’s Provincial Flag Championships in Kelowna. The U10 squad were among eight entries the Rams sent to the Okanagan for the five-a-side championships that featured divisions ranging up to U16. The Rams only had six players available for the weekend and were up against some teams that had as many as 20. Still they served notice by winning three games and tying another on day one. That was followed by three more victories and a loss to even-

tual champion Coquitlam for a well-deserved bronze medal. Many of their opposing coaches marvelled at how well the Rams played — earning the nickname the “South Delta Six.” The team featured Damian Dumas, Roo Jacobs, James Wheeler, Conleth Plaxton, Jayvin Bhullar and Arshaan Bilga. Also on the Rams roster are Samuel Pravica and Brandon Moore. The boys are coached by Aaron Plaxton, Tim Dumas and Ron Crosato. Registration is now underway for the Rams’ tackle fall season. South Delta 2001 Invaders continued their season-long hardware collection — this time on home soil at the Delta Fastpitch Association’s own Big Delta “B” Tournament. This rep event featured a whopping 54 teams, ranging from U14 to U18, with action taking place at the association’s three main venues across the municipality — North Delta Community Park,

Hawthorne Park (Ladner) and Brandrith Park (Tsawwassen). The Invaders were seeded fifth at the conclusion of round-robin play in their 16-team division. They dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to South Surrey/White Rock, then rebounded with wins over Langley Extreme (8-2) and Nanaimo Diamonds (7-0). The girls extended their run by squeaking out a 6-5
win over Ridge Meadows. South Delta then toppled another Langley team (8-5) before bowing out of championship contention with a 5-2 loss to the Port Coquitlam Ravens. The hosts then secured a spot on the podium with a 4-2 triumph over the Richmond Islanders. It was an impressive feat as the team was plagued with injuries and sickness throughout the weekend.
Tsawwassen’s Markus Thormeyer captured a pair of silver medals swimming for Canada at the Barcelona leg of the Mare Nostrum tour. The 19-year-old former Winskill Dolphins Swim Club standout was second in Tuesday’s 200 metre backstroke. His time of 2:00.94 was only bettered by Rio Olympic Games silver medalist Mitch Larkin of Australia (1:57.48). “I’m really pleased with my performance. It was good to race a bunch of new guys I haven’t really raced before on the international stage,” said the South Delta Secondary graduate. “I feel like getting on the podium was a good step towards my goals of success at international competitions.” Thormeyer added a second silver in Wednesday’s 100m backstroke, finishing in a time of 55.44 seconds. The high-profile Mare Nostrum is a three-leg series. It concludes this weekend in France.

LEBRUN, Donald Allen December 12, 1947 - June 10, 2017 It is with deep sadness that passing of Don. Don is survived Donna, daughter Kerri, son Chris, daughter-in-law Melanie, Kyla, Dylan, Jesse, and his relatives.
we announce the and missed by wife Dennis, son-in-law grandson Truman, many friends and
Don was born in Vancouver, where he grew up. He moved to Ladner in 1975, where he lived with his wife and children. He was strong, loyal, and someone you could always count on. His laughter and smile were larger than life. Don was a selfless and modest man with a wonderful sense of humour. He worked as a commercial fisherman for many years, and also owned and operated his own welding company. Don passed away holding Donna’s hand at noon on Saturday June 10th. A special thank you to Dr. Kason for his many years of care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, or BC Children’s Hospital. Those we love can never be more than a thought away...for as long as there is a memory, they live in our hearts to stay. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONDER PROGRAM In June 2015, Delta implemented the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Program, which trained and licensed Delta firefighters to administer an enhanced level of emergency medical care to patients until the ambulance arrives. The goal of the program is to provide fast, more effective pre-hospital care to Delta residents, and to achieve this using existing resources. Dr. Martha Dow, an Associate Professor at the University of the Fraser Valley, was commissioned to review the Emergency Medical Responder Program data from June 15, 2015 to September 12, 2016, and provide independent feedback on the outcomes of the program. These are some of the highlights from Dr. Dow's report:

OUR FIRE STATIONS ARE STRATEGICALLY LOCATED THROUGHOUT OUR COMMUNITIES TO ENABLE THE QUICKEST POSSIBLE RESPONSE TO EMERGENCY SITUATIONS,
DESPITE DELTA’S LARGE GEOGRAPHIC AREA AND TRAFFIC CONGESTION.
Feedback from the patients and the Delta community as a whole has been overwhelmingly positive. Mayor Lois E. Jackson & Delta Council would like to assure you that Delta is committed to continuing the EMR program and ensuring that our residents receive the most effective pre-hospital care possible.
“Our priority is to keep the residents of our community as safe as possible by providing world-class, quick response to critical situations. The Emergency Medical Responder Program has greatly improved the care we can provide to Delta citizens when they need it the most, further emphasizing Delta’s commitment to sustaining a safe community to live, work, and play.”
Lois E. Jackson Mayor
“The collaboration on the Emergency Responders Program is a phenomenal example of improving services to our community with little or no additional cost to tax payers. The hard work of everyone involved, as well as the exceptional professionalism of Delta Fire & Emergency Services, under the leadership of Fire Chief Dan Copeland, has made the implementation of this program a complete success.”
“The Emergency Responder Program has added a new dimension to our work as firefighters, giving us an increased scope to protect and serve the citizens of Delta. We look forward to building upon the broad skill sets we’ve developed to further provide high-quality and efficient pre-hospital patient care in emergency situations.”
George V. Harvie Chief Administrative Officer
