It already takes too long to get downtown by bus and the proposed service changes will only add to that, according to mem-

bers of the South Delta Probus Club, who gave TransLink officials an earful on Wednesday.

Transit authority representatives were on hand to make a presentation and answer questions at the group’s weekly meet-

ing at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn, a session where concerns were raised about creating longer bus trips.

One Probus member complained it can take 90 minutes or more to get downtown on the

601 and the proposed changes will only encourage commuters to use their cars, a sentiment quickly echoed by several others who expressed concern about how long it could take from Tsawwassen to Bridgeport.

One member suggested making the 602 an all-day express service while another questioned how many bureaucrats would have to be let go in order to maintain the 602.

Delta is facing a major bill as aging playground equipment will have to be replaced, says Coun.

The chair of the parks, recreation and culture commission is pointing out Delta’s last major playground replacement program, which took several years and around $2 million to complete for dozens of sites, ended in 2005.

Now it’s time again to start talking replacement, something that could have a substantially higher price tag this time around.

“They were all replaced in about a three- or fouryear period, virtually every playground on municipal land was replaced at that

time. So they’re all about the same age. The cost now could be double that,” said Campbell.

The replacement program was launched after a young girl broke her arm at Ladner’s Cromie Park after a swing set collapsed.

A consultant’s report stated playground equipment in many local parks was unsafe.

Campbell noted enough time has gone by where a plan now needs to be formulated involving a report for his commission as well as discussions at Delta council’s business plan workshops where the financing can be devised.

“At the same time the commission is discussing, ‘OK, how do we want to go about this? What’s the best way to recommend

to council to deal with this? Is it a three-year or five-year project?

Campbell added the replacement program is also a good opportunity to introduce some innovative playgrounds such as the adventure playground that’s going to have a grand opening this Saturday at Annieville Lions Park in North Delta.

Costing around $150,000, the natural playground replaces a portion of the older play structure

and is designed for children of various ages, from toddlers to teens. The natural playground introduces an element of risk and challenge for children to push their comfort levels.

The playground was co-funded by Delta, a Co-op Community Spaces grant and the North Delta Lions Club.

Delta also has costsharing arrangements with school parent advisory groups looking to replace older playgrounds on school sites.

A policy approved last year encourages more natural play features in playgrounds as part of those cost-sharing agreements. Delta’s policy remains unchanged for a

However, for a playground using more natural play elements, Delta would provide up to $45,000 as well as up to $5,000 for a professional landscape architecture service to come up with the design.

Research from UBC and the Child Family Research Institute at B.C. Children’s Hospital concludes that risk in outdoor play is beneficial for children’s health as well as encourages creativity, social skills and resilience.

Majority of bus trips start and finish in community

TransLink recently finished gathering feedback on the Southwest Area Transport Plan, which involves changes to the transportation network in Ladner, Tsawwassen, Tsawwassen First Nation and Richmond as well as connections to North

Delta and nearby areas.

In South Delta, the proposed changes include eliminating the 601 service for some neighbourhoods, rerouting it from 52nd Street to Salish Drive (48th Street) as more development occurs within the TFN. In addition to the loss of service on 52nd Street, trips to Boundary Bay will be discontinued, although customers would be able transfer to the C89 with extended hours.

Meanwhile the 602 is to be cancelled, while the 603, 606, 608, 609 and the

C84 will also see some adjustments. The C87 would be cancelled, but potential additions include a new 604 express from Scott Road Station that will work its way to the ferry terminal in Tsawwassen.

Noting reliability and directness of service were among the priorities identified by customers, and that about 60 per cent of trips in South Delta start and finish within the community, Matt Craig, a TransLink planning team manager, explained the 601 could have up to

10 minutes of additional distance added, depending on how many more stops will be included as it goes through Tsawwassen, Ladner Village and to the Ladner Exchange.

The idea is part of a new frequent transit network connecting the Tsawwassen Town Centre, TFN, Ladner Village and Canada Line.

According to TransLink, the proposals aim to simplify routes in South Delta to make it easier to understand and to provide direct service within the com-

munity, resulting in faster travel times.

“We’re certainly adding distance and, depending on how many stops and stop activity there are along there, the only reason we would be wanting to make that change is to get more people on the bus, not just to make it a longer trip for everyone,” Craig said.

He noted all the input gathered will be considered as the route designs are finalized. Final recommendations will come out this fall.

Driver caught trying to flee from crash on foot South Delta Crime Beat

TSAWWASSEN

• June 14, 10:17 p.m., 1400-block of 54th Street: Complainant reported their unoccupied vehicle parked in front of residence was struck by another vehicle. Extensive front end damage to both vehicles estimated at $15,000 each. Suspect fled on foot. Driver subsequently located and charged with motor vehicle and liquor act offences.

• June 15, 9:17 p.m., 700-block of English Bluff Road: Complainant found large sports bag containing sporting equipment in the bushes between 7A & 8A avenues. Property secured at Delta police headquarters.

• June 16, 1:35 p.m., 1500-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported unlocked bicycle stolen from parking lot. Theft witnessed and photographed by complainant who recovered bike a short time later. Complainant then observed suspect removing items from business in laneway and followed him to local mall

where suspect was located by police. Suspect arrested and found in possession of items believed to be stolen from the store. Suspect later released on promise to appear.

• June 17, 1:24 a.m., 1900-block of 56th Street: Traffic stop conducted after police observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. During investigation an odour of liquor detected on driver’s breath. Roadside test resulted in a warning, driver’s license seized and prohibition from driving.

• June 17, 8:11 a.m., 5300-block of 9A Avenue: Complainant reported sometime overnight unlocked vehicle parked at residence was broken into and rummaged through.

Area canvass revealed second vehicle in area also broken into. Nothing stolen from either vehicle.

• June 17, 11:37 p.m., ferry causeway: Complainant reported theft of wallet after departing ferry. Unknown male had bumped into complainant prior to departure, but complainant unable to provide description.

Wallet contained personal identification with $10 in change.

LADNER

• June 14, 12:23 p.m., 7600-block of Progress Way: Complainant reported front license plate stolen from commercial vehicle while parked in open parking lot of business. License plate number entered into police database.

• June 15, 4:05 p.m., 4500-block of 65A Street: Complainant reported sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. unknown person(s)

• June 17, 6:26 p.m., 4800-block of 53rd Street: Complainant reported unknown persons threw tomato at windshield of parked vehicle and left a derogatory note. Police attended due to ongoing parking complaints. No damage to vehicle.

• June 17, 8:47 p.m., 5700-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant reported theft of unlocked mountain bike from outside local business. Police called after complainant was later able to locate bicycle being ridden by unknown male who was unaware bicycle was stolen. Video surveillance to be obtained from business to identify suspect.

• June 18, 9:23 a.m., 4600-block of 55B Street: Complainant reported sometime overnight unknown suspect(s) rummaged through three unlocked vehicles that were parked outside residence. Approximately $20 in change missing from one vehicle. No damage reported.

• June 18, 9:37 p.m., 5400-block of Chamberlayne Avenue: Complainant reported unlocked vehicle was entered while parked in driveway and iPad worth $500 stolen. No damage to vehicle.

Stats show break-ins starting to drop

Alert citizen aids police

A vehicle break-in suspect is back in police custody thanks to an alert citizen.

According to Delta police, on Tuesday night a citizen was out enjoying a bite to eat in the 6200-block of River Road when he came out of the restaurant and saw a man breaking into his truck.

“When confronted the suspect fled on foot into the surrounding bush area,” the Delta police said in a post on the department’s Facebook page. “The citizen, now the victim of a theft, called police. Patrol officers along with a K-9 unit attended, tracked, located and arrested the suspect.”

Police say it appears the suspect has been involved in this type of activity before, so much so that one of his conditions is not to touch a privately owned vehicle without consent.

The suspect is in custody awaiting his next court appearance. He is facing charges of failing to comply with probation, theft and possession of stolen property.

Monthly crime statistics from Delta police show a slight decline in the number of residential break-ins, while theft from vehicles is also showing a slight drop due to the department’s focused public campaigns.

The crime stats were presented at the June meeting of the Delta police board.

“We started off the year with a bang and January and February were tough

Police dep’t offers tips to guard against home break-ins

With the warmer weathnow here and vacation season kicking in, the Delta Police Department is offering some tips to homeowners to guard against home break-ins.

Preventative tips include: • Ensure all windows and doors are closed and secured when you leave the residence, even if you are only going to be gone for a short time.

• When you are home

• For those planning a weekend away or summer vacation, make preparations for someone to watch your residence while you are away or visit a community police station and ask a volunteer about DPD’s Home

“This will allow for potential evidence gathering and effective canvassing of the area for possible suspects.”

there are Level 1 chargers that allow electric vehicles with onboard charging systems to receive a charge.

Level 2 chargers require four to six hours to fully charge an electric vehicle’s battery, but can provide a reasonable “top up” in one to two hours (20 to 40 kilometres worth of battery power).

In 2012, in partnership with Metro Vancouver, Delta received provincial funding to identify potential Level 2 charging stations within the community, but after a review at the time it was determined the demand didn’t justify the cost of installation.

A report to council noted since then electric vehicle sales have been steadily increasing in Canada with the largest number being sold in B.C. The cost of purchasing and installing an electric vehicle charging station is approximately $10,000 to $15,000.

It could be easier for electric car owners in Delta to find a spot to charge their vehicles.

Included in the Liberal government’s Throne Speech this week is a commitment to invest $50 million over five years in new charging stations for electric vehicles.

Environment Minister Jordan Sturdy announced earlier in the week the commitment would be in the Throne Speech, saying it’s important to encourage the electrification of B.C’s transportation fleet.

The extra money would be good news for Delta where a commitment has already been made to eventually install more electric vehicle charging stations across the municipality.

It remains to be seen whether a minority Liberal government will be able to make good on its legisla-

tive agenda or whether a NDP-Green coalition would adopt the funding plan.

Last summer, Delta council agreed with a staff recommendation to bring a proposal forward at a business plan workshop to identify potential locations for charging stations.

When and where they would be installed still has to be determined.

Mike Brotherston, manager of climate action and environment for Delta, said the provincial announcement sounds like good news but they will have to wait for details.

“We’re ready to go with some potential locations.

We just need to put it together with a funding source,” he said.

In Delta, there are Level 2 charging stations at Boundary Bay Regional Park and at the Canadian Wildlife Services office on Westham Island. At Boundary Bay Airport,

Help from Shriners hits close to home

Club member looks to raise awareness about medical services after both daughters receive care If you were one of the hundreds of South Deltans who for the 48th year enjoyed the recent Tsawwassen Shrine Club salmon barbecue, you helped fundraise for many of the vital medical services the club supports.

But do you know what those services are?

Local Shriner Greg Nicholls has been with the club since 2014. He joined after years as a Free Mason and after attending one of the annual barbecues.

“One of our biggest challenges as Shriners is finding enough children to help. We have way more capacity than patients,” said Nicholls. “This is due in large part to people not really knowing what Shriners do.”

June 6 was Shriners International Awareness Day, in which Shriners marked their 145th anniversary since the fraternity was started.

In those years members have built, own and run 22 Shriners Hospitals

for Children throughout North America, with one of their newest hospitals in Montreal on the campus of McGill University. These hospitals are committed to providing the best care for children in the specialty areas of orthopedics, burn care, spinal cord injury, and cleft lip and palate, regardless of a family’s ability to pay.

Nicholls has witnessed the impact that Shriners have on the communities in which they serve as his two daughters are Shriners patients after both tore their ACLs playing basketball just months apart.

For Stephanie, the first one to hurt her knee, the family started to follow the normal course — going to the hospital, getting X-rays and booking specialist appointments. After all the diagnosis was said and done, best case it would have been 12 to 18 months before surgery — a long time for a 16-year-old girl who plays competitive sports, not to mention the time spent after surgery in physiotherapy.

So Nicholls sought out

After a doctor’s visit, MRI and other tests, they were given a surgery date within six weeks of the initial call.

Just a week before Stephanie was due to have her surgery, Kassidy tore her ACL. “This time I knew exactly what to do — I called Shriners right away,” Nicholls said.

ow that the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project is on a death watch, many will be rejoicing at the prospect of the $3.5-billion undertaking not moving forward.

Should the NDP-Green coalition form a razor-thin majority, it will have the votes needed to kill the massive infrastructure project, which is most definitely the prerogative of the party — or, in this case, parties — in power.

Should that happen, the obvious question is: What’s the alternative?

What’s being said by opponents doesn’t offer much comfort on that front, let alone make a lot of sense.

One of the popular arguments is that building a bridge would just move the morning bottleneck to the Oak Street Bridge. That ignores traffic counts that show almost 60 per cent of vehicles heading northbound through the tunnel on a weekday morning will end their journey in Richmond, never making it as far as one of the three bridges across the north arm of the Fraser. It also conveniently overlooks the fact the Oak Street Bridge has absolutely nothing to do with lengthy southbound lineups for the tube every afternoon.

The tunnel is a bottleneck all on its own and a plan needs to be developed to address the situation.

NDP Leader John Horgan hasn’t categorically said he’d shelve the bridge, but if he defers the issue to Metro Vancouver mayors as he’s suggested he would, they’ll kill it for him in favour of projects elsewhere in the region.

Green Leader Andrew Weaver has mused about a second tunnel, which at least would address current congestion issues, but if tunnels are as cheap to construct as bridge opponents claim them to be, why don’t we have a Port Mann tunnel, a Golden Ears tunnel or even one other tunnel in the area?

Nearing its 60th birthday, the George Massey Tunnel has struggled to cope with traffic volumes for decades now, yet until Christy Clark announced plans for the new crossing that’s now in jeopardy, nothing had been done and there was nothing on the horizon. If a 10-lane bridge isn’t deemed to be the answer, then it’s up to Horgan, Weaver and others to come up with a plan that not only satisfies their supporters, but commuters as well.

Continuing to ignore B.C.’s worst bottleneck is not an option.

We can’t allow government to make another mistake

ince my last column the new configuration of the provincial government says they “might” cancel the proposed bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel. As well if they build it they “might” toll it but they “might” not and then they would just pay for it out of general revenue.

As further assurance to South Delta commuters, TransLink is considering a substantial cut in bus service to South Delta.

When you know that machines are already moving soil for this $11.5-billion bridge that “might” be built and “might” be tolled at the same time bus service is being reduced, doesn’t it make you wonder who is running the asylum?

If this was a private business things would be done in a completely different manner and the bank vault would remain locked until all aspects of design, costs and funding were put in place.

But this is a government project funded by endless amounts of taxpayer money.

Some letters recently in the Optimist describe the slow crawl they face getting to work, and although I understand the frustration, indebting this province for $11.5 billion to build this bridge makes your problem insignificant. You don’t have to live in Delta and work in Richmond, but taxpayers will be paying for the

bridge long after you retire.

I suggest this should all stop and the entire situation should be openly and honestly re-assessed.

Let’s look at: • Tolling the existing tunnel to reduce users; • Limit trucks from the port to restricted hours through the tunnel; • Limit port trucks to the South Fraser Perimeter Road over to the Alex Fraser Bridge; • Limit all trucks over threequarter ton to the right lane only; • Install lights to control merging vehicles; • Change the way the port operates — move trucks north of the river working from barges.

If decisions like this bridge are left to just political motivation instead of practical reasoning, we are simply going to have more issues and more debt. Originally the tunnel was required because

government decided to build the new and largest ferry terminal in South Delta. Why did it do that?

Shortest boat ride to Victoria?

Wrong reason.

Then government decided to build the port in South Delta where none of the containers were destined to go, but faster turn-around for the container ships. Wrong reason.

Ten years ago it was decided to build the SFPR to accommodate the container trucks because, as Kevin Falcon said at the time, “The Massey Tunnel will not be upgraded for another 40 years.”

Apparently that was also wrong.

Not too long ago tens of millions were spent for a seismic upgrade to prolong the life of the tunnel, which was also the wrong assumption.

My point is that governments have a long history of making mistakes for the wrong reasons on issues such as this, and I believe we have come to expect that from them because that’s just how they work.

Port cities all over the world deal with issues like this in many different ways, but whatever the problem and solution is the taxpayers of B.C. simply do not deserve 50 years of paying for this bridge.

Twinned tunnel is a far more sensible option

Editor: People living south of the George Massey Tunnel deserve a real solution to the congestion they must endure. That solution is the Metro Vancouver Mayors’ Council’s 10-year transportation plan.

NDP Leader John Horgan and Green Leader Andrew Weaver know that the mayors’ plan is well researched and will offer real results, and that is why they have supported it.

But it is fair to say that we need a solution to the backed up traffic now so I offer the 30/30 plan: increase capacity in the tunnel by 30 per cent in 30 days.

As far as negatives, there will likely be a crime spike as some individuals will target growers and stores selling the newly legalized product, which is not really a change as we have petty crime now. The extra security cost will be

the responsibility of these growers and stores.

There will also be a change for police in assessing when drivers may be drunk or high, but I can’t help but believe that is already in place to some degree. It may be a cost that is born by the government, but the new pot taxes will more than cover any additional costs.

I know people will point and yell that our community will all become raging druggies and drag down our society, but really, not

to make too light of the situation, but is this much different than the end of prohibition?

I would hazard to guess many in society at that time were touting that with legalized alcohol our communities would become filled with hopeless drunks leading to a life of crime.

We all know that didn’t happen.

Some will say that more of our susceptible community members will fall prey to pot and that will be a cost. Well, we have

alcohol, we have prescription pills, opioids, heroin, cocaine and many other drugs, and through experience, I firmly believe that it’s the individual, not the product, that leads to addiction.

At the end of the day, legalization of marijuana is probably overdue. We may not like it but life changes.

Let’s keep our heads as this process moves forward as there is much worse these days to lose our minds over.

No Liberal howls after gov’t redirects coast guard funding

Editor: Recently, the Trudeau Liberals shut down Canada’s only rescue dive team, situated in Vancouver, and not a peep out of Liberal MPs in the Lower Mainland, including Delta; yet when the Conservatives closed the Kitsilano Coast Guard station, all hell broke loose.

Liberal MPs and wanna-be MPs condemned the thenfederal government for putting lives at risk.

That was in 2013; now

fast-forward to 2017 and the 15-man dive team operating out of Sea Island in Richmond has been tossed overboard in favour of new jobs in the Coast Guard “as part of the organization’s budgeting strategy.” [CBC news] A spokesman for the coast guard said, “Funding is not being cut; but rather redirected as the government is reprioritizing resources to enhance search and rescue capacity and response.”

Back to 2013. Then prime minister Stephen Harper said, “Closing of the Vancouver Coast Guard station was his government’s emphasis on public safety.” [As quoted in the Globe and Mail, 2013] For the Liberals, it is all about “reprioritizing resources to enhance search and rescue capacity and response,” and

for the Conservatives it was “emphasis on public safety.”

Question: How do they differ? Either it is all about public safety or it is not; there can be no in between. What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander is apropos in this case.

So, where are the howls of protest from the Liberals? Why are the

Liberal MPs not shouting from the rooftops that dumping the rescue dive team will cost lives? This is very much a do as I say thing, not as I do.

The tunnel replacement project is a very illogical project but I understand that some members of Delta council were willing to take any plan out of desperation rather than wait for the right one.

Twinning the tunnel could be achieved in two years at half the cost and much of the prep work is done. A twinned tunnel could accommodate rapid transit, which the proposed bridge could not due to the steep climb.

A twinned tunnel is a sensible option so let’s work together for that.

Don’t litter on our beaches

Editor: I was shocked when I got to the bottom of the Fred Gingell Park stairs Wednesday morning to see the volume of garbage scattered along the beach in both directions.

Beer cans, cooler cans, bottles, pizza boxes, juice containers, plastic straws … all within 15 metres of a municipal garbage can and a “Do Not Litter” sign. The litter completely filled a large black garbage bag that I had with me.

Come on people, show some respect for your fellow citizens, and for our beautiful beaches and parks. Don’t leave your garbage lying around. Please pick it up and pack it out.

A development permit application has been received by Delta to allow a Dairy Queen in the former location of the abc Restaurant at Ladner Centre on Ladner Trunk Road.

Delta’s deputy director of planning Marcy Sangret said the application is in

the very early stages.

“The application has to go through the review pro-

cess and design panel and eventually (Delta) council, but I don’t have a date yet when that will be,” Sangret said.

She said because this is a development permit for building form and character, the application likely won’t go to a public hearing.

“Council may refer it to public hearing if they wish. We usually base that on if we have received any concerns from the public during the initial application,” she said.

Chevron redevelopment A rezoning application to redevelop the Chevron gas station site on the edge of Ladner Centre on Ladner Trunk Road to include a Triple O Restaurant is making its way through the initial application stage.

Sangret said the proponent is currently responding to comments from staff. Then the application with go through Delta’s advisory design panel process and then finally to council for their review.

Because it is a rezoning application, part of the public review process will include a public hearing.

The proposal calls for a renovation of the existing gas station, including the gas pumps and canopy, the creation of a Triple O Restaurant with 15 seats inside and a small patio,

an updated Town Pantry convenience store and landscaping.

There is no drive-thru for the Triple O’s in the application.

Tim Hortons in East Ladner Following Delta council’s decision to waive the six-month period for defeated development applications in late May, allowing for another look at a plan for an East Ladner Tim Hortons, Sangret said the application has been received by staff.

Southborough Investments has been trying to build the small restaurant with a drivethru on a vacant lot adjacent to the Otter Co-Op gas station on Ladner Trunk Road at 64th Street, however, the proximity of the drive-thru to nearby homes and the hours of operation were sticking points for council.

The new proposal would see a higher sound attenuation fence and would see the proposed hours of operation change from 24 hours to 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Sangret said staff will be re-notifying the public soon and the application will again go through a full public process and public hearing.

“I expect the application to come back to council as soon as possible,” she said.

RBC donates $20,000 to purchase colonoscope

Latest gift to hospital brings total to over $240,000 RBC Foundation has made a $20,000 donation to the Delta Hospital Foundation that will go towards purchasing a colonoscope for the surgical services department at Delta Hospital.

A colonoscope is a thin flexible tube with a camera attached that allows physicians to take photos and videos of the inner lining of a patient’s large intestine. Colonoscopes are a vital part of diagnostic and screening procedures, helping to detect ulcers, colon polyps, tumours and areas of inflammation or bleeding.

“We are so thankful for RBC’s long history of helping fund priority needs at Delta Hospital,” says

Angela Turner, major giving manager for the hospital foundation. “The new colonoscope will have real impact for our medical staff, and most importantly for our growing patient population.”

Since 1999, RBC has donated over $240,000 to Delta Hospital. Over the years these funds have supported the purchase of a number of priority needs, including a noninvasive ventilator, crash and isolation carts, a Bluetooth probe for the surgical daycare program and additional high-tech tools for the respiratory therapy team.

Delta Hospice Society offers online course

Are you interested in getting to know hospice palliative care, the palliative approach and communicating wishes about your future health care needs? Do you want to learn more about how dying and grieving affects us all and is being recognized as a community responsibility?

Given the universality of death, dying, loss and bereavement, palliative care is increasingly being seen around the world as a true public health issue.

How we look after our dying and our grieving is a reflection on how we care for the most vulnerable in our community.

The Delta Hospice Society has created an online course on OpenLearning called Towards the Light, Illuminating the Palliative Approach.

It is a free, interactive course that can be completed at your own pace.

It begins on June 27, but is open for registration now.

This course is designed for the public, especially people who are helping care for a family member, friends, caregivers, students, health care providers, educators and members of the public who want to learn more about planning to live fully, until they die. It may also interest people living with a life-threatening diagnosis or chronic illness, to achieve the best quality of life possible.

Participants will learn about the different types of supports available throughout the palliative journey, including an introduction to programs and services offered by the Delta Hospice Society’s Centre for Supportive Care and the Irene Thomas Hospice.

The Earthwise Society is holding a series of three day camps from July 4 to 6. Earthwise has over 20 years of experience leading cutting-edge educational programs for youth and is offering three outdoor camp options to choose from this summer.

Farming Fun! will kickoff the week on July 4 with hours of activities surrounding food gardens.

Children will get to try new veggies, discover the world of plants and be a farmer for a day.

The Mystical Garden camp on July 5 will explore what makes gardens magical and allow campers to create fairy gardens or terrariums to bring home.

6 will be a fun-filled day visiting the resident bees, digging for worms and helping to construct a new bug “mansion.”

Youthful debut for Bridge Director selects This Is Our Youth as first production for new theatre company DAVE WILLIS

sawwassen’s Beau Han Bridge’s new theatre company will present its debut production next month in Vancouver.

“So far it’s been very, very daunting but worth it,” he says.

Bridge, 23, is tackling This Is Our Youth as the first production for his new company, Midtwenties Theatre Society.

The play by Kenneth Lonergan has a cast of three and is a “brilliant, darkly humorous, bittersweet portrait of youth poised on the cusp of the scary, disillusioning path to adulthood,” according to a release.

Bridge, who’s directing, says while some say it’s a coming of age story for one of the characters, he sees the play as a mosaic of three very distinct young people and how dissatisfied they are with the society they have around them.

Tsawwassen’s Mackenzie Cardwell, 22, plays Jessica. Cardwell, who has film, TV and theatrical experience,

describes the character as “incredibly anxious” as well as fiery and opinionated. “(There’s) so much to unpack and so many interesting layers to her,” Cardwell says.

Bridge, who’s also an independent filmmaker, says he aims to address plays that are less explored in the theatre scene with Midtwenties Theatre Society and also focus on plays that can’t easily be fit into specific genres.

Bridge and Cardwell were in productions together at South Delta Secondary and later worked together in one of Bridge’s film projects.

Other cast members include Quinn Hinch as Warren and Zack Currie as Dennis.

This Is Our Youth runs from Friday, July 14 to Monday, July 17, Wednesday, July 19 and Friday, July 21 to Sunday, July 23 at the Red Gate Revue Stage on Granville Island, 1601 Johnston St. Tickets are $20 and available online at http://www. brownpapertickets.com.

Ladner author’s new novel a ‘slow burn’ DAVE WILLIS

Ryan Morris will be at Black Bond Books in Ladner this Sunday to promote his new novel, This Never Happened.

The effort marks the third book he’s written and first to be published.

“It’s about a young man who’s really just trying to find his place in the world,” says Morris, 41.

The Ladner resident adds the novel is dark but funny in parts and takes a bit of a science fiction twist as well.

He describes the book as a little hard to pin down in terms of a specific genre.

Morris says he’s always been into the arts and worked in animation for a decade before going back to school. He now works as a library technician at an independent school in Vancouver.

He says started writing screenplays for TV and film but never really did much with them.

“That eventually evolved into writing novels,” he explains.

Morris will be at Black Bond Books from 1 to 3 p.m.

He says he’s hoping to have copies of the book at the event. This Never Happened is also available as an e-book through Amazon.

Acrylic paints come in fluid mediums and can be thinned to mimic watercolours or full bodied thick mediums better suited to oils. Finishes can be shiny, or matte, and textures can be smooth, crackled or rough with the right medium added.

The South Delta Artists Guild’s current Oil & Water juried show at Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen features several acrylic pieces.

Lee Caulfield, a White Rock artist, won the Vancity Credit Union Award for third place at the show. Her piece, called Arrival, featuring a bird on a masonry wall, is full of texture and colour.

She used a process called “cutting in” to turn the space below the wall into impressions of blue flowers and soft creamy blossoms.

Bliss found at Big Stick Lake in Chilcotins JANE CASSIE

A morning mist permeates the evergreen shoreline and cloaks the lake with a mystical veil.

A boater slices through it silently. His reel is set, line is cast and he sits, waiting with patience. Shards of sunlight pierce the vapor and reflect off a nearby kayaker.

Big Stick Lake is just one of the shimmering jewels where we chill out during our seven-day case of Chilcotin fever. It’s a heat of passion that strikes the majority of travellers who pass over this enchanting terrain, sandwiched between Williams Lake and Bella Coola.

It’s fuelled by impressive expanses of undulating plateau, the backdrop of snow-capped peaks and the bountiful lakes that lure anglers from afar.

When it breaks, it produces a sense of awe, a feeling of humility and the realization that we are all just a small part of the universal picture.

This day is similar to

others that we’ve enjoyed along the way. We bask on our private sandy beach until the heat is so unbearable that we’re forced to make a beeline for a refreshing dip. Tiny minnows swarm the shoreline and dart away the moment we invade their space, and a little further afield, the fish leap to the surface like clusters of overactive jumping beans.

“We caught five this morning,” Hank, a neighbouring camper, reports, “but only kept a couple.

After all, how many can we eat?”

Snagging these suckers doesn’t seem to be up to the luck of the rod. The lake is literally teeming and everyone who has come to fish will definitely leave as happy campers.

All it takes is one visit to the Tsawwassen Tennis Club to understand all the passion and pride behind its membership.

Under clear skies, the five pristine courts and clubhouse were being soaked by the early evening sun. Steps away from the English Bluff Road location is Fred Gingell Park where plenty of walkers were taking advantage of what’s left of the glorious day.

The “friendliest little tennis club in Metro Vancouver” turns 50 this weekend and members are looking forward to many more milestones in the years ahead.

“We love this place,” beamed acting club president Ken Barlow. “It brings a smile to my face every time I pull into the parking lot.

“Every team that comes out here to play league matches tells us the same thing. They all love coming to Tsawwassen.”

Sunday’s birthday gala will celebrate the private club’s rich history with invitations sent out to an estimated 400 past members from the last 40 years. There will be live entertainment, plenty of food, a few speeches and, of course, lots of time for tennis.

The club originated at the 8A Avenue municipal courts before a keen membership wanted an exclusive place to play and host league matches. A deal was struck with B.C. Hydro

in 1971 to lease the parcel of land on English Bluff Road. Three courts, a practice area and a children’s playground were constructed. The 8A clubhouse was also relocated. The entire project cost $11,000.

Lights would be installed a couple of years later to extend evening play to 10 p.m. and two more courts were added in 1976.

Today, membership is holding steady at just over 200 players. Annual fees have remained modest, especially stacked up against other private tennis clubs in Vancouver. Adult is $249 and there are price breaks for multiple memberships — $389 for couples and $450 for families.

The bulk of the fees go towards continuing improvements.

According to club maintenance executive and historian guru Mike Hawkes, the cost for a complete renovation of one court these days is $20,000. It’s that investment that makes the club’s playing surfaces vastly superior to local municipal courts.

Jane Hindmarch oversees a School Outreach Program that visits local elementary schools and provides a couple of basic lessons, complete with the club’s own racquets to use.

The idea is to get kids interested in tennis, maybe to the point of one day wanting to be part of the club’s junior program.

“We do the absolute basic skills to see if they might be interested later on,” explained

Hindmarch. “It’s important and something we can do easily. It’s a hurdle for schools to even have their own equipment.”

For Kathleen Semple, the club has almost been her second home.

She came through the junior program when her parents were members. Now she is playing again, serving as club secretary and has been a big help with the annual Bob Putnam Junior Challenger tourney.

“I played competitively in high school and even assisted with the junior program at one time. I still lived out here while going to university and was asked to come back and play for one of the adult league teams,” said Semple.

Tsawwassen teams have enjoyed plenty of success in the Lower Mainland Leagues over the years with a large number of members participating. Some, like Dian Soparlo, have gone on to enjoy success playing in international masters competitions.

Still, it’s the camaraderie that most will say is the club’s greatest attraction. Being part of events like the Opening Day Breakfast or the weekly Friday Evening Socials. That’s why players of all levels and ages are encouraged to join.

“We are very very welcoming,” smiled Hindmarch. “We don’t care if you have ever picked up a racquet before. We will work with you.”

Delta talent named to B.C. Select teams

South Delta is well-represented on B.C. Baseball Select teams participating in tournaments south of the border.

Tsawwassen Athletics’ Ryan Heppner and Kyle Losse is joined by North Delta’s Willy Wilson on the B.C. Baseball Selects team that competed at last weekend’s 13U Triple Crown’s Tri-Cities Slugfest – Pasco/Richland/ Kennewick.

The extensive process to name the final 13 player roster began with 140 hopefuls attending five regional tryout camps. That number was reduced to the top 48 invited for a three-day camp last month in Aldergrove.

Meanwhile, the Delta Tigers have a distinctive flavour on B.C. Baseball’s 15U Selects team that is headed to Great Lakes Wood Bat Classic — July 6-9 in Evanston, Illinois. The 15-player roster includes Braedy Euerby, Connor McIntosh, Sean Heppner, and Noah Thomas.

Tigers head coach/manager Cam Frick and assistant Ford Marcotte are also part of the B.C. staff.

Isles play league’s top 2 teams in 17 hours The Delta Islanders will be riding a two-game win streak into a pair of weekend road tilts against the top two teams in the B.C. Intermediate “A” Lacrosse League.

The Islanders improved to 8-6-0 with a big 14-12 win over the Langley Knights on Tuesday night.

The result moved them within two points of the third place Knights.

Delta heads to Maple Ridge Friday night to take on the front-running Burrards (11-1-0), then are off to the provincial capital less than 24 hours later for an afternoon tilt against the

second place Victoria Shamrocks (10-3-0).

Delta dropped a 13-6 decision to the Burrards back on June 2, while the Shamrocks handed them a 10-6 loss on June 11.

Meanwhile, the Junior “A” Islanders are back in action Saturday when the high-flying New Westminster Salmonbellies (13-4-0) visit Ladner at 7 p.m.
