Military chapter ending Rev. Jim Short retiring as chaplain in the Canadian Armed Forces after 26 years IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Rev. Jim Short has always had a passion to serve others. On July 4, one chapter of his service will come to a close. After 26 years with the Reserve Force in the Canadian Armed Forces, Chaplain’s Branch, Short will retire. “It’s kind of an emotional and reflective time for me,” Short said. “I love what I do. I love service, I love people, I love working in the church, I love working in the army, so it’s a really big loss for me retiring from military service.” Short will reach the compulsory retirement age of 60 on July 4. “I have to retire even if I maybe don’t want too,” Short said with a laugh. Short has always had a vast interest in the military. One just has to take a look at his Ladner United Church office to see the vast array of military artifacts and literature for proof of that. “My grandfather was a Royal Newfoundland Naval Volunteer Reserve sailor in the First World War and I was very close to him, but I didn’t see myself going into the military as an infantry soldier, so I got ordained,” Short recalled. “At that time I met my wife Cathy [Bone] and she had been in the military as a student military chaplain. As I went through ministerial training, some said I would be a great chaplain and that’s where it started.” He was commissioned into the Reserve Force in 1991. His distinguished military reserve career has been spent mostly in B.C., but one of his most notable calls for service was a

Rev. Jim Short will continue with his duties at Ladner United Church, but will retire from the military next week. year-long deployment in Kandahar, Afghanistan. During this deployment he initiated and dedicated himself, along with a team of volunteer Canadian soldiers and civilians on the home front, to support education for Afghani children and the needs of their teachers through a project of providing learning materials to a school in Kandahar, then an orphanage in Kabul. “I have a very strong

bond and connection to the people of Afghanistan, especially the children,” he said. “I have immense respect for people who strive to be the best that they can be with so little all in the middle of a war zone.” Short said life as a minister in the military has been rewarding work. “You work with a lot of young people where going to regular church is not a part of their life. It’s a

great opportunity to work with people in that setting. I threw myself in pretty passionately to that work. I had a lot of opportunities that many reservists don’t get. To deploy, to go to the fires in Kelowna, I presided over the funeral for Smokey Smith. For 26 years I’ve really been on call as the senior chaplain.” When someone is deployed in the military such as Short, you really

have to depend upon your employer for support. Short said Ladner United Church and its congregation saw his military service as an extension of their work in the world that people in the military need support and guidance when they go off to places of war. “I couldn’t have done any of this without this congregation or this community. It’s one thing when, say the Vancouver Police Department lets a few of their members go, but when you have your one paid employee go, like my case, that is a pretty significant sacrifice. This community has always stepped up to support. It is very generous.” Short also volunteers at the Delta Hospital Thrift Shop and is a member of the Delta Hospital Auxiliary. He is a member of the Ladner Business Association, co-founded the Delta Safe Haven group to sponsor three refugee families from Syria and in 2015 was named Citizen of the Year. And while his military service is over, his years at Ladner United Church will continue. “In a way I’m ready to take a break, to move on and do something else, but I do really miss it already,” he said. “I really love this kind of work, so maybe a door will open at some point to do some chaplaincy type of work with another group. I’m one of these types of people who believes that the spirit moves in ways that I don’t understand, so I think at some point an opportunity will present itself. “In the meantime, I can be content having one full-time job here with the church and spend more time caring for our grandchildren.”

The final piece of the development puzzle for Tsawwassen Springs is almost in place. Following a public hearing Tuesday night, Delta councillors gave conditional approval to a 60-unit townhouse addition. “We are really pleased. For a project of that size to have virtually no opposition, I have never experienced that in all my years in Delta,” said developer Ron Toigo. “There is always someone against everything. It has come a long way from when this project started and the 20 public hearings. What it really shows, though, is people can see what Tsawwassen Springs is. They can see it and appreciate it for what it has become — a real desirable place to live for the people of Tsawwassen and all over the Lower Mainland. People that live there are proud to live there and we in turn as developers are proud to be a part of that.”

Farmland and Wildlife Trust’s programs, the contribution this time around would be used by Delta for agricultural irrigation and improvement projects. In addition to the financial contribution, the applicant also proposes that his company’s efforts to reclaim the agricultural capability of another property in Ladner help offset the loss of ALR land. Besides Delta’s approval, the application also requires Agricultural Land Commission and Metro Vancouver approvals. “That is the next step, but we are confident we have addressed all the concerns,” Toigo said. “I think we will get it done and look forward to breaking ground next spring.” Developed by Talisman Homes and Shato Holdings, Tsawwassen Springs will have about 550 housing units, from condos to single-family, when all phases are complete. It also features an 18-hole golf course, banquet facilities, Pat Quinn’s Restaurant & Bar and other amenities.

Delta received 74 letters of support as well as two other written submissions of support. Two residents also spoke in favour at the public hearing. One resident spoke against aspects of the proposal at the hearing while Delta received 11 written submissions of opposition. “In general, I would like FILE PHOTO to thank the Developer Ron Toigo calls Tsawwassen Springs a real desirable place to live. proponent for once 2.55-hectare (6.3-acre) site buildings in Tsawwassen that works so well, which again bringSprings. in the Agricultural Land I think sets this project ing forward a project and The applicant proposes apart. SMILE, WE HAVE IT GOOD!

We are Lucky to live in relative comfort and safety here in Canada. Yes it’s easy to grumble about the snow, the traffic and other minor inconveniences of our First World, but imagine living in a war-torn country that can not offer you relative comfort and safety. My wife and I are both immigrants from Ireland. We came to Canada 30 plus years ago and we have had a great life in this country. We raised 5 children and have always been welcome in our community, our church, and our neighborhood, getting to know people from all corners of the world. We did not have any big problems coming to Canada, even though it took months to get the paperwork complete, it was worth the wait. We were lucky we were not coming from a war torn country like Northern Ireland, or Vietnam then or Syria now. We were from the South of Ireland where there was no war. Canada welcomes both types of immigration, the economic immigrants like us, and the refugees who have to get out of their old country for safety. Canada wins because of all of these people and it makes our country strong. Yes, sometimes it takes new immigrants, of a very different culture from Canada, a generation to learn the ways of this country, but that is a small price to pay to bring all these great people to Canada. When we see, what is happening to the South of us and the mindset that goes with that we shake our head and thank God that we live in Canada. This was paid for by the O’Sullivan Family of Delta, B.C. and P W Trenchless Construction Inc.

Bog advocates dismayed by boardwalk Burns Bog Conservation Society says maintenance lacking since Delta took over earlier this year

week. “There is a crew out there today [Tuesday] doing repairs,” said Kuntz. “It is a massive boardwalk system that is, in some areas, over two decades old. There are going to be broken boards on an ongoing basis, but we are on them right away. There is not weeks that go by, it is literally hours that go by when those boards are replaced.” Kuntz said he commends the volunteers for building and looking after the boardwalk, but the municipality is carrying out the maintenance in a proper fashion and will continue to do so. “We are trying to make sure we involve Al [Dinis] into the inspection process. We want to nurture that relationship,” said Kuntz. “I have great respect for the work that the volunteers have done over the years. It is a time in our litigious society that maintenance is documented and that there is a standard procedure followed and that’s what we are doing.”

The Burns Bog Conservation Society is raising concerns this week over what it perceives to be a lack of maintenance of the boardwalks in the Delta Nature Reserve. Society president Eliza Olson said since 1995 the society has been opening old trails and adding boardwalks to them in the reserve, the only part of Burns Bog open to the public. The society has fundraised for building supplies and numerous organizations have donated funds or materials, but in March that all changed when the society was advised the Corporation of Delta would be taking over maintenance of the boardwalks. “Our amazing volunteer Al Dinis, who took over the management of the volunteers and monitoring the boardwalk, came back from a two-month holiday last week and was just horrified by what he saw,” said Olson. “He saw 81 broken

Two kilometres of boardwalk stretches through the Delta Nature Reserve in Burns Bog boards, a section of the boardwalk sagging. This is hazardous for walkers, strollers, bikers, let alone anyone in a wheelchair. “If the failure to maintain the boardwalks continues, there will be

no place for the public to have safe access to Burns Bog. This will impact the society’s ability to host field trips and summer day camps in the Delta Nature Reserve. So much for encouraging children

to get out into nature.” Olson contends the lack of maintenance would not have happened had Delta not taken away the responsibility from the society, but Delta’s director of parks, recreation

and culture Ken Kuntz disagrees. Kuntz said every week staff inspects and walks the entire area, notes the boards that need to be repaired and then schedules the repairs for that

alk about First World problems. We complain, and with good reason, that the transition from one government to the next in this province took longer than it should. We complain, again with good reason, about the ridiculous price of housing in Greater Vancouver, about ever-increasing traffic congestion, about never-quite-adequate government services and about a host of other issues that impact our daily lives. I’m all for complaining because it’s the squeaky wheels that often prompt change in our society and, on a more personal level, without that kind of carping this newspaper, or any other for that matter, wouldn’t have much of a letters to the editor page. However, as we get set to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday tomorrow, it’s time to put that griping aside for a moment and reflect on how thankful we should be to live in such a great country. The fact we can freely voice our opposition to a government and then turf it if it doesn’t respond to our satisfaction is a right many in this world don’t enjoy. We don’t need guns and tanks and missiles to change things at the top; the votes of 44 democraticallyelected representatives can accomplish that in a far more civilized manner. But there’s more to Canada than just our freedoms, although we must never lose sight of the fact that many have died to ensure we have such rights. Canada is a place of abundant natural beauty, a landscape that makes both locals and visitors marvel, but it is the society that has sprung from the land that is most impressive. We are known as a polite, peaceful country whose citizens have a propensity for apologizing even when it’s not necessary. We’re known for universal health care, a welcoming nature, an enviable quality of life and, yes, hockey supremacy. As we look back on a century and a half of nationhood, we should be proud of what we’ve created. It’s not perfect by any means, hence all the complaining that goes on, but the long line of people from around the world wanting to become Canadians is testament to what we’ve got here. We’re not ones to brag, but it’s hard not to brim with pride when you hear someone like Barack Obama say, “The world needs more Canada.” That’s pretty cool, eh?

You can’t get there unless you know where you’re headed

henever our provincial government gets back to the task of running the province, it will make decisions that influence the development of our community and its course through history. These decisions already occur every day and are part of a process that turns the indeterminate potential of the future into the rigid facts of the past. In this, our society is a structure under constant construction. When you build something, you need to have a clear end state, a goal, or you will have no idea how to orient your actions. Delta’s Official Community Plan was designed for such a purpose and provides a framework to that end. It was originally put forward in 1985 and in the last 32 years it has been amended approximately 294 times, or nine times a year, not including rezoning applications or bylaw amendments. While I believe the vast majority of amendments and rezoning applications were approved for what were believed to be benevolent reasons, I cannot say for certain that what has been approved is in service to the Official Community Plan’s stated goals. The plan was developed to create a community that is livable,

Community Comment NICHOLAS WONG

complete, green, planned, prosperous and involved. To be livable, a community must be sustainable into the future. With the constant push for expansion, we need to set strict boundaries to prevent unfettered growth. If we do not adhere to thresholds, we will quickly find ourselves as frogs in a pot of slowly boiling water. To be complete, the plan states that Delta will be a place where people of all ages and kinds can live, work and play. In order to prevent the historic exodus of people between 25 and 35, more rental housing options (as suggested by ML Burke) and commercial opportunities are required. There is no way to prevent the encroachment of suburban sprawl onto our green space and agricultural land if Delta’s com-

munity plan requires constant compromise. We need to know what is worth preserving, clearly delineate it and not falter in our resolve. These three goals will give us a community that is planned, prosperous and involved, the other stated goals of the Community Plan. However, it also identifies certain shortcomings. In order to preserve what we have, I believe that we need to set a secondary set of maximum and minimum limits that are taken as gospel. We should be able to say that under no circumstances will Delta allow development on these specific areas of green space. We might be willing to compromise in these other spaces, but we will not compromise here. This ought to be done with many things from urban containment to minimum percentages of rental units and farmland usage. That is how you preserve what you have: stipulate those areas on which you will not waver and hold your ground. By stating a desired outcome, you can make decisions that lead to better results. By imposing limitations, we can safeguard the future. Community advocate Nicholas Wong ran as an independent candidate in Delta South in last month’s provincial election. He finished second with more than 6,400 votes.

Try commuting like a South Deltan

Editor: Re: Twinned tunnel is a far more sensible option, letter to the editor, June 23 As a former Richmond citizen and remembering the day that Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip opened the George Massey Tunnel in 1959, I find it odd that Richmond Coun. Carol Day is against a bridge. If you don’t live in Tsawwassen and Ladner, then you should spend a couple of weeks in our local hotel and experience the different ways we travel daily. Try riding a bicycle or walking through a tunnel. Take the bus in rush

hour where sometimes we peak at 90 minutes getting to Downtown Vancouver or at midday when the buses drive through rural Ladner, adding another 15 minutes to the commute. Or attend a concert downtown and wait for an hour at the Bridgeport Station for a bus home after 10 p.m. TransLink is cancelling one of our express buses out of Tsawwassen and overall has ignored the citizens of South Delta. It is trying new routes solely for the benefit of the new mall on Tsawwassen First Nation land. The changes will add a further 10 minutes to get to the Canada

Line. Commuters in White Rock taking transit arrive in Vancouver 15 minutes before us, who live a halfhour (by car on a quiet day) from Vancouver. The only good idea Day has is to restrict trucks during rush hour but it just doesn’t make sense to scrap the bridge after all these years of planning and the money spent on engineering. It will take years to plan a new design, while thousands of new homes are being built south of the tunnel. Sixty per cent of northbound vehicles through the tunnel in the morning end their trip in

Richmond. Think about that: everyone is in a daily traffic jam at the south and north end of the tunnel, not at the Oak Street Bridge. If we have an emergency, and the tunnel is jammed, how do you think we can get to a hospital in Vancouver or Richmond? What about the airport if the tunnel is jammed with an accident? You are not going to stop progress so please take our concerns into consideration. Start to think of the future and support our good mayor, Lois Jackson, in her cause for our citizens. Eileen Kuettel

Too much traffic coming to 56th Street

Editor: “Volume exceeds capacity, queue length is theoretically infinite.” These words forecast traffic conditions on Tsawwassen’s 56th Street resulting from the Southlands development. They appear in the transportation study written by Bunt Associates for the Southlands development, albeit sheltering coyly in Appendix C of this 220-page report paid for by the developer. I asked Bunt Associates if their traffic projections had included Southlands construction traffic and the long-term increase in vehicle ownership

per head of population. (BC-wide vehicle ownership per person increased 15 per cent between 1995 and 2015.) They had not; the congestion will be worse than forecast. Better public transit is supposed to solve all our problems. TransLink’s contribution to this mantra is to cancel the 602 bus, which is the main commuter link between Tsawwassen and Bridgeport Station. The Corporation of Delta’s engineering department has evinced only vague, everythingwill-be-alright mutterings. It is obvious the conges-

tion sponsored by Delta council can be relieved only by widening 56th Street at the expense of medians, sidewalks, parking space and building setbacks — major construction works paid for by the taxpayer. Crossing 56th Street on foot is quite dangerous enough now. The alternative — by no means inconceivable given council’s disregard for the community — is punching a new access road through other parts of Tsawwassen, using compulsory purchase as necessary. And guess who picks up the tab? Into this mess Century

Group plans to cram 500 new condos, converting the light and airy town centre into an overcrowded ghetto. The two sixstorey buildings applied for, overlooking 56th Street and occupying 100 parking spots, are the beginning of a demolition and construction program extending into the distant future. If council approves this development, it will be a disaster for Tsawwassen. Our existing council does not have an exactly stellar record of listening to the opinion of the electorate, but elections are coming up in 2018. We shall see. Tom Morrison

Twinned tunnel definitely not the answer

Editor: Re: Twinned tunnel is a far more sensible option, letter to the editor, June 23 I have heard that Richmond Coun. Carol Day has made some positive moves for her constituents on the topic of mega-homes on ALR land in Richmond, however, it is clear to me she is way off track on her suggested twinning tunnel option. Why? Think about it. A twinning of the tunnel means four lanes each way. Currently we have

three lanes, including the counter-flow north in the morning and south in the afternoon. How will one more lane each way in a twinned option reduce congestion? It won’t. Further, if one lane in a twinned tunnel option is dedicated to a HOV/bus lane, you are back to three lanes for non-HOV users, just as we have today. In addition, a twinned tunnel would require much more dredging of the Fraser River than a new bridge, and that can’t

be good for the river environment. A twinned tunnel may cost less, although with dredging, fire suppression systems, emergency evacuation routes, seismic and ongoing maintenance, the total cost may not be much less, and you will get a degraded short-sighted solution. Also, have you noticed how almost every time you go through the tunnel that someone taps their brakes, thereby slowing down any hope of a smooth traffic

flow? A twinned tunnel would be no different. With a new bridge you rarely get this brake tapping issue because visibility is much better. However, the most confusing part of Day’s letter is that she contradicts herself by saying a twinned tunnel is the best solution and the Metro Vancouver Mayors’ Council’s 10-year transportation plan is the solution. The problem is the plan does not include a twinned tunnel. Keith Munro

Metro ramps up water conservation efforts

SUMMER SALE

We Love Water campaign provides information on how to use a lttle less in driest time of year

With hotter temperatures hitting the South Coast, Metro Vancouver has expanded its drinking water conservation campaign, We Love Water, by offering more helpful tips to support the region’s long-term goal of reducing overall water demand. Residents can visit WeLoveWater.ca, which provides information on how to use a little less water during the driest time of the year. The updated campaign comes on the heels of the region’s annual lawn watering regulations, in effect from May to October. According to Metro it’s during the summer months when the region’s water use typically increases from around one billion to 1.5 billion litres per day, and residents are encouraged to “use a little less, and care a little more” by adopting water-saving habits around the house and in their lawn care routines. “A golden lawn doesn’t necessarily mean an

unhealthy lawn,” said Darrell Mussatto, chair of Metro Vancouver’s utilities committee. “By planning ahead, and by following expert advice on the website, you can help preserve your lawn during the hot summer months. It will green up again quickly in the fall when the rain returns.” Lawns need as little as 2.5 cm of water per week to stay healthy and maintain a strong root system — equivalent to about one hour per week of rainfall or sprinkling. Watering early in the morning, before 9 a.m., also reduces the risk of evaporation and scorching from the sun. Residents are also encouraged to get involved in “We Love Water Wednesdays” by sharing what they are doing to use less water this summer by using #WeLoveWater on social media channels. The best submissions will be showcased Wednesdays on Global BC’s News Hour at 6 by meteorologist Kristi Gordon. Metro Vancouver will also be sponsoring

weather updates, with additional reminders to conserve water triggered by dry stretches of weather. “If every Metro Vancouver resident started using a little less water this summer we could all make a big difference when it comes to our most precious resource,” added Metro Vancouver board chair Greg Moore. “Water conservation simply makes sense — it’s the right thing to do, it’s easy and it is an important part of region’s environmental sustainability.”

Go Girls program coming to Tsawwassen

Big Sisters creating partnership with Delta School District to launch initiative this September IAN JACQUES

A successful mentorship program is set to launch in Tsawwassen elementary schools this September. Go Girls! is a group mentoring program that focuses on physical activity, balanced eating and self-esteem. The goal of the program, which is facilitated by Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland, is to positively shape the lives of 12- to 14-year-olds by helping them build a positive self-image, setting them on a path to reach their full potential in life. The program is led by female mentors aged 19 to 30 and is currently offered in schools in Coquitlam, Burnaby, New Westminster, Surrey and Vancouver. Program manager Ivy Chaing said Big Sisters received a strong interest to expand the program into South Delta. “With this interest we decided to approach the Delta School District,” said Chaing. “They have been very receptive to the

program. We are confident we can sign a partnership agreement soon and get the program going in September.” Chaing said the major sticking point is the provincial government uncertainty and what each school district’s resources will look like for the next school year. “The school district themselves identifies the SUBMITTED PHOTO schools that Girls in the Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland Go Girls! group mentoring program learn the they think will importance of staying active and that you don’t need to play competitive sports to keep most benefit healthy. from the proand communication skills. habits and the risks associconsists of seven mentorgram,” added ated with eating disorders, The program strives to ing sessions, held during a Chaing. “We have seen promotes the importance create appreciation for seven- to 10-week period. some great results in the of positive mental activity the benefits of an active, Each session is loosely other school districts, and and regular physical exerhealthy lifestyle, build structured around four we expect the same here cise, encourages awareunderstanding of what themes: physical activity, in Delta.” ness of core values, perhealthy eating, self-esteem constitutes healthy eating The Go Girls! program

Sharon Makina, an international student from Zimbabwe studying at SFU, fell in love with the program the minute she started mentoring students in Burnaby. “The week one vibe is very different from the one in week four. You can tell in the beginning that the girls are a bit shy and don’t say much, but by the first few weeks they are all happy to share and become more open,” Makina said. “Usually most of the girls are not friends before they start the program, but after a few sessions, you can see that they are becoming very close, forming relationships and bonding together.” Chaing said more information about the program’s start-up in Delta will be available in September. Focus on

Seniors

Are You Ready for the Heat? Seniors suffer from heat stroke or heat exhaustion (milder form) more often than younger people because of medical conditions such as hypertension, Parkinson’s, heart or kidney problems, certain medications and their generally slowed ability to adjust to temperature change. Heat stroke can occur quickly and if not treated can cause death. Planning ahead can help greatly, check the weather forecast and have a plan for staying cool. Make sure your air conditioner is working, if you have one, or bring the fans out from storage. Plan outings with friends or family that will take you to places you know will be cool, places like the mall, library, church or other public building. Think about meals you can prepare ahead that can either be eaten cold or quickly heated in a microwave instead of having the oven on. Keep your curtains/ blinds closed when the sun is coming through the window.

When it is hot out, wear light clothing and avoid spending too much time in the heat, rest and avoid vigorous activity. However, it is also important to be careful when you transition in/out of hot/ cold areas as the sudden change in temperature, if too great, can also have a negative effect (e.g. headache, dizziness). When it’s hot out, drinking fluids becomes even more important; however, too often seniors avoid or must restrict fluids for fear of incontinence or because of medical conditions such as congestive heart failure. Other ways to cool down include cold baths/ showers, a cool damp cloth to the back of the neck or wrists, running a fan over moist wraps. Rest in a shaded park, enjoy a cold/frozen snack or time in the swimming pool. There are several warning signs to watch for including: headache, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, extreme thirst, red hot/dry skin, rapid pulse and a body temperature above 1030F

Delta Potters launch Canada 150 project DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta Potters are getting into Canada’s 150th birthday in a big way. Members have created small pottery maple leaves that will be hidden in public places around Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta during the month of July. Member Sue Hunt estimates close to 300 maple leaves will be made and hidden by the “time the dust settles.” The first batch of maple leaves will go out today and be ready to be found tomorrow (Canada Day), says Hunt. The leaves all say “Canada 150” on them somewhere and were left up to the members to design.

Leaves will be left in public places like park and bus benches, along the dike and in local libraries, she says. The idea is to “hide them in plain sight,” says member Gary Taylor. Potters president Jane Williamson says the project is a way to promote the club and Canada’s birthday as well as being “just a fun thing to do.” Those who discover the leaves are asked to email the club at dpacanada150@gmail.com and include a selfie with their find (or post to the group’s Facebook page). They will be entered into a draw in the last week of July for pieces of pottery with a Canadian theme that have been donated by members.

Well on Your Way P.J. WREN

When you’re out there in real life (whether you’re playing a sport, grocery shopping, or walking the dog), we are using our legs to drive the action, while our abs are stabilizing and supporting that action. You can’t have one without the other - which is precisely why I love leg exercises to train the abs. With the right leg exercise you can strengthen the abs, as well as your legs and hips. And, who doesn’t like an exercise that hits more the one muscle at a time? Try these exercises at

We have an amazing variety of public art in and around South Delta. Decorated sidewalks and impressive sculptures stand tall in our malls, local theatrical and music ensembles give us steady performances, the work of individual artists light up our places of business, leisure and health, and schools are adorned with decorative fences and murals. At our ever-growing group of social events, we celebrate the creativity and ingenuity of others where we mix and mingle with local artisans and craftsmen. So, what’s the big deal? How is art being used in our community

opportunities that have shaped the course of our community. They have brought people together for a common cause, and have also raised awareness of pressing community issues. Here are a few examples: 1. As part of Ladner Baptist Church Family Fun Craft Day, communal art projects have been a mainstay. With over 10 craft tables, a gym activity and communal project, art provides an outlet for families of individuals with different psychological, physical, emotional, developmental and medical needs connect with others. For over five years, parents, children, grandparents and friends have participated in several projects together. For instance, one centered around decorating puzzle pieces that were then glued together to create a heart. Celebrating individual, this piece also showcased the interdependence between each of the people there. 2. For the past two years, art projects have

medium art piece inspired by Reach’s logo. The art piece is a reminder of the support of the community. This year, a Friendship Tapestry was created to mark the 150 years of Canada, acknowledge the longstanding history of First Nations in our area and celebrate the diverse textile traditions that exist in our multicultural SUBMITTED PHOTO society. Communal art projects join 3. Delta’s Child and people together. and add them to the top of the tree. This art work has the potential to make an appearance at local high schools where yet more feedback can be added, has the possibility of turning into a live online interactive app and will help us understand the pulse of our youth. Communal art projects are really quite simple, yet are profoundly powerful. They become outward expressions of what’s taking place in our community, and are conduits for social change. So, whether it’s team building exercises, group classes, recreational activities, religious or social events, help us create a stronger community now for a stronger community in the future. Make art together. Our community depends on it. Mary Ann Burrows is an artist and creativity coach at Spark Creativity Coaching. An Art-full Life

and why should it matter to us? Art making is often described as an individual process of reflection, but when a group of individuals from various backgrounds, interests, ages and abilities creates alongside each other, a whole host of interesting dynamics emerge. Each individual brings their own thoughts and interpretations to the art process and as a group, participants communicate, collaborate and negotiate their sense of self and collectively. Dr. Cathy Malchiodi, a research psychologist and art therapist, notes that it is this type group work that makes the process community-building tangible and visible. Not only do communal art projects join people together around specific causes and to commemorate a certain celebration, art projects have the capacity to raise awareness of pressing community issues. In South Delta, for the past few years, there have been several art-making

Cross-country trek in search of a home

All kinds of great places visited on 37,000-kilometre journey that ended back on West Coast COLLEEN FRIESEN

It was a quest. We would drive across Canada and find somewhere new to live. We’d been across the country before but this time was different. We rented out our Vancouver apartment for a year, put our severely-edited remaining things into storage and stuffed the rest into the teeny drawers of our new turtle-shell: a 17-foot RPod trailer. We left on April 30, starting through Washington, Oregon, Montana, then up to Saskatchewan and back to B.C. After a Mt. Robson hiking trip, we finally got serious about heading east. We poked our way through little towns and big cities. Whether canoeing to Grey Owl’s cabin in Waskesiu, learning about the bisons at Elk Island National Park or hiking to Boom Lake in Banff, it was when we got active and

engaged that a place came alive. In any town that looked interesting, we asked the same question: “Do you like living here?” The answers varied. One woman in Stratford, Ontario was so passionate about her home that we almost moved there on the spot, easily imagining our new world filled with live theatre. In Quebec, we cycled the 200-kilometre P’tit Train du Nord, staying at wonderful inns and discovering jewels of villages. Val David and Saint Sauveur were our favourite towns. We imagined our new bi-lingual lives filled with flaky croissants and platters of poutine but we still had further to go... And then we got to Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia is not Canada’s biggest province and there is an awful lot of nothing for long stretches of highway; sections where traffic might consist of

The cross-Canada trip included hiking on Mt. Robson. one other random vehicle. In fact, some little towns almost look abandoned in their quietude. There are coves and bays where traps and fishing lines seem staged for players who are hidden from view.

There were discoveries down every road and behind almost every door. And there was music, oh my there was music, especially on Cape Breton Island where it is as woven into the landscape as the

rock and the kelp. In Antigonish, we found Peace by Chocolate, a tiny little chocolate shop run by newly-arrived Canadians. In Damascus, the Hadhad family ran a well-known chocolate factory. Like so many others in Syria, their world was destroyed. Now, with the support of a welcoming town they are building new lives, one piece of delicious chocolate at a time. Near Yarmouth, on the Acadian Shore, we cycled against a stiff Atlantic wind in the second annual Gran Fondo Baie Sainte Marie. We found a tiny town on a dramatic coastline filled with tons of community spirit. And then there was Lunenburg. Colourful and funky and with all the tourist pull you’d expect in a place that harbours the ship that is embedded on our Canadian dime. But it was in Lunenburg where I could imagine a life filled with books, art, films, cul-

ture and community. Everyone I asked was effusive about living there. We drove up and down the maple-lined streets, looking at the restored old homes, gobsmacked at the compared-to-Vancouverridiculously-low prices. In October the weather started to shift. We started back west. When we saw the Rocky Mountains, we both grinned. The forests got thicker. We felt the pull of the familiar. After almost six months and 37,000 kilometres, we ended up renting a little cottage on the Sunshine Coast. When we really distilled our requirements for that perfect place, we realized friends and family headed the list and most of them are here in the west. Phil Dunget and Linda Maze will bring their Totally Tom Petty and The Women of Rock Tribute show to the Tsawwassen Legion next Friday. “Basically the theme of the show is that Tom Petty is on the road with three famous women rockers,” explains Maze, who portrays Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar and Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders. The couple is from

Vancouver and has been based in Las Vegas for about two years now, says Maze. She notes that one by one, the famous female rockers join Petty on stage to perform with big intros for each. It’s a lot of fun, and pretty hectic, to perform as three different stars in the same show, she says, adding she enjoys the challenge. “I think it’s more fun for the audience too, to have that variety,” she says. The show, with a live

band, is set for Friday, July 7 at 8 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Legion, 22-1835-56th St. Tickets are $20 in advance or $23 at the door. Call 604943-0232 after 5 p.m. for tickets. “The whole idea for us is we love to entertain people and make them happy. Take them outside of their regular world and have a really good time,” Maze says. “If we see people having a really good time that’s honestly when we feel like we’ve done our job.”

A year after having a key role in the Delta Islanders ending the Coquitlam Adanacs seven-year reign as playoff champions, Nick Jensen was dealt to the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League rival for an intermediate prospect on Wednesday.

The Delta Islanders have begun to cash out on the 2017 B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League season. Entering last night’s game in Langley with a 4-14-0 record, the Islanders completed a pair of transactions, including the playing rights of first-year standout Ryan Jones being sold to Ontario Junior “A” Lacrosse League powerhouse Six Nations. Despite the Islanders rough season, it has been an exceptional campaign for Jones who sat fourth in league scoring with 78 points in 18 games, including 25 goals. His point total is 38 better than his nearest teammate. A defenceman with the Vancouver Giants, it was believed the 19-year-old would decline being traded in order to prepare for the upcoming Western Hockey League season. However, the opportunity to play for a Minto Cup national championship intrigued him. The tournament will be played back east with Ontario teams receiving two berths. Six Nations currently tops the 11-club circuit with a 14-1-0 record. His older brother Mitch won a Minto Cup with Orangeville back in 2012.

“Ryan came to us asking for permission to talk to Six Nations about a potential move there. He wasn’t interested in being traded within the league and having to play against his buddies,” said Islanders general manager Greg Rennie. “We are happy to get something done and it’s to my understanding he got permission from the Giants as well.” The deal will see Jones’ playing rights revert back to the Islanders in 2018. Rennie looked closer to home to pull off a second deal — sending third-year defender Nick Jensen for the intermediate age player Sekawnee Baker. Jensen was a key member of last year’s run to the club’s first-ever BCJALL championship. The Richmond native proved to be dangerous in transition, producing 11 points in 10 playoff games and scored the biggest goal in franchise history — the game three overtime winner in the deciding game against seven-time defending champion Adanacs. Jensen was added at the start of the 2016 season after beginning his junior career with the Burnaby Lakers. Baker is currently third in scoring for the Richmond Roadrunners of the B.C. Intermediate “A” Lacrosse League with 40

points in 12 games, including 24 goals. “He gives us more scoring depth and that’s what we need,” continued Rennie. “He and (Maple Ridge captain and defender) Connor Evers are going to step into our line-up next season and immediately contribute.” Rennie was hoping to send two more players back east but ran out of time prior to the inter-provincial roster deadline at noon Wednesday. He still has until Saturday to make moves within the league and will continue trade discussions with BCJALL teams. Rennie reiterated the plan to age up the program’s key first-year intermediates as full-time junior players next season. Among them is current “A’ league leading scorer Jake Canton with 98 points in 16 games and teammate Haiden Dickson who sits eighth in scoring with 75 points. The Islanders sit seventh in the intermediate standings with an 8-8 record but played well in losses to frontrunners Maple Ridge and Victoria last weekend and have a favourable schedule remaining. “There are definitely lots of encouraging signs,” added Rennie, who is also coaching the intermediate team. “We just need to stay out of the penalty box. It’s far and away our biggest problem.”

South Delta players help Coastal win Premier Cup

A strong local contingent helped Coastal F.C. conclude the B.C. Premier Soccer League season in style on the weekend, defeating Mountain United 3-0 to be crowned Provincial Premier Cup champions. record then peaked for the playoffs, producing three straight victories, including a semi-final triumph over regular season champion Fraser Valley Premier (11-1-2). The B.C. TESTIMONIALS

I recently needed to sell my parent’s Ladner home and interviewed three local Realtors from South Delta. I chose The Chanceys because of their marketing plan, pricing and experience. I was the owner of Summerland Realty for 35 years and I am well acquainted with what it takes in a real estate professional to get the job done. I would strongly recommend The Chanceys to sell your home.

PHILIP H. - June 2017

I have been a Commercial Real Estate Agent for over 10 years and I have lived in Ladner for 24 years. When it came time to sell my home in Ladner I knew that I only needed to make one phone call because the right choice was to call The Chanceys. I would recommend them with no hesitation!

MILAIRE, André 1925 - 2017 Milaire, André (91) died in Brantford, ON on February 24, 2017. He is predeceased by his wife and infant daughter, and survived by six children, eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and Mary Jane. André’s ashes will be interred in the Veteran’s s e c t i o n o f t h e B o u n d a r y B a y C e m e t e r y, Tsawwassen, BC with a reception following. Memorial donations can be made in André’s honour to the Salvation Army. Messages of condolence can be made at www.korucremation.com/obituaries.

David passed away peacefully on June 27th in his 60th year. He was born in Calgary but lived most of his life in Vancouver. Out of high school, David worked at Bootlegger Clothing and managed a Keg Restaurant before earning his Commerce Degree from SFU in 1991. He started up his own event rental business in 1997 and dedicated his life to making Rowe Events successful. His greatest joy though, was his son Kevin and his beloved dogs. David will be missed but we take comfort in knowing he is in a better place and finally at peace. David is survived by his son Kevin, mother Elaine, sister Jodi, brother Greg (Jeannie), nephews Blair, Frazer, Spencer, Mackenzie and niece Kelsie. He is predeceased by his father W.J.A (Bill) Rowe. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday July 6th, 2017 from 3-5pm at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of David to Delta Life Skills Society (www.deltalifeskills.net) or Pacific Riding for Developing Abilities (www.prda.ca) or a charity of your choice.
