After months of what appeared to be little progress, a flurry of construction activity is now underway on the next phases of Tsawwassen Commons. The Optimist was taken on a tour of the Tsawwassen First Nation site this week and provided an update on the 550,000-square-foot outdoor mall.

“It’s a large site so when you don’t see as much happening, to the general public, it might seem like something is wrong,” said Novy Cheema of Gracorp Capital Advisors Ltd. “The public wants to see the vertical construction and the buildings going up and that will happen in the next few weeks. You will start to see coming soon signage, so people can see what is coming here and I think the perception in the public will really change.”

First responders from Delta have answered the call to help battle the province’s wildfires. A Delta staff member and a Delta firefighter have been deployed to Williams Lake where they are assisting the Caribou Regional District Emergency Operations Centre, while six Delta police officers have been deployed to various locations around Williams Lake and 100 Mile House. “We [staff, Delta Police Department Lois Jackson and Delta Fire Department] actually met in a tent at last weekend’s Tour de Delta to decide how we were going to proceed, what was needed and who would go,” said Mayor Lois Jackson. “We told the province that we were on standby and ready. We have always offered to go when called upon because we know how important it is when you have limited resources and little towns that don’t have the equipment and personnel. We are also grateful when others assist us, like they did last year with the Burns Bog fire.” Hundreds of wildfires are burning, many out of control, primarily across the Cariboo region, destroying property and displacing tens of thousands. Delta police officers are being deployed for four to seven days at a time.

Frustration over water lots Delta looks to go UBCM route in bid to have province provide longer term leases SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It’s been pure frustration with the water lot lease issue, say municipal officials hoping to cut a better deal with the province. Delta has made a submission to the Union of B.C. Municipalities to consider bringing forward a motion at September’s convention aimed at pressuring government to reconsider its position. Civic officials are warning that the inability to have longer term leases will curtail any redevelopment on the Ladner waterfront, while float home owners and businesses along the river will live with uncertainty over their tenure. Mayor Lois Jackson recently said the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources, which oversees the provincial water lots, has been giving Delta the runaround. “It’s quite outrageous and quite unacceptable… it’s like talking to a brick wall,” she said. Coun. Bruce McDonald said there’s substantial inequity when it comes to who gets longer, more secure leases, noting that Metro Vancouver has been given a 30-year lease on the water lot at the Iona sewage treatment plant. “We’ve been offered a 10-year lease on properties we have (and) there are 250-odd homeowners and businesses along the river who are living on a month-by-month basis.

FILE PHOTO

The Delta-owned Seven Seas site was supposed to be a catalyst for redevelopment of the Ladner waterfront, but the lack of a long-term water lot leases is hampering efforts. You can’t sell, you can’t do anything with your properties because you can’t get any financing.” Agreeing there’s no consistency, and saying the situation is a mess, CAO George Harvie said it’s caused tremendous hardship. “We’d be better off if we administered the water lot leases in Delta ourselves, absolutely better off. We’ll look after it and give the province a fee if they want. We’ll be making that request in the next couple

of months,” he said. Harvie said the provincial government and ministers may change but the bureaucracy stays the same, and that’s the problem. Port Metro Vancouver had been managing provincially-owned water lots for the government, subleasing and regulating activities, but the port pulled out when its agreement with Victoria expired at the end of 2014. The province has taken over managing the fore-

shores but hadn’t offered current or prospective leaseholders, including many float home owners and businesses, long-term tenure, which meant the Delta-owned properties at the Seven Seas site, which was put up for sale, wasn’t a particularly attractive place to invest. Delta used $2.3 million in amenity money it received from the port about a decade earlier to purchase the site with a goal to eventually encourage major redevelopment

and revitalization of the area. It’s also a major component of the more recent South Delta Business Sustainability Strategy and Delta had already approved a new waterfront mixed-use zone for its parcels that would permit a wide range of uses. The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources, however, came up with an agreement, after consultations with the Musqueam Indian Band, that doesn’t allow for long-term leases.

Eateries among confirmed tenants for next phases CONTINUED from Page 1 Alan Nicholson, site supervisor with Titanium Projects, said much of the work that has been going on the past few months has been site prep, preload, underground plumbing and electrical. “You are probably about a month away from seeing a lot of vertical steel going up on the site. The foundations are all prepped and ready to go,” said Nicholson. “I would say most, if not all, of phase two and three will be ready to open in early to mid-2018.” Confirmed tenants for

phases two and three include Wendy’s, Tim Hortons, Starbucks (with all three having drivethrus), Menchies, Booster Juice, Subway, Kamome Sushi and Simply Pho. All of these eateries will be located towards the centre and outer portions of the mall. Staples is set to open in mid-August along the row of big box retailers. Cheema said more restaurants and service type businesses will be announced in the coming months as part of phase four. He did confirm that fuel

tanks are in the ground and that the Shell gas station will be under construction soon with an expected mid-October opening. Landscaping, road work and road connections will also take place, which Cheema said will really add to the look and feel of the whole project. A potential child care centre and more retail units are part of phase five.

With all the big box stores already in place, work is underway on smaller units.

Driver caught speeding in rented Lamborghini

A young driver from California received an introduction to Canadian traffic laws this week he probably won’t soon forget. On Wednesday afternoon, the 20-yearold driver of a rented Lamborghini Huracan was pulled over by Delta police for excessive speeding as he was travelling at 155 km/h on Highway 99. “Regardless of the type of vehicle you drive, going that speed is unsafe and illegal,” said Delta police on its Facebook

page. “The driver learned this lesson the hard way as he watched the vehicle get loaded up onto a tow truck.” According to police, after being issued a ticket for excessive speed ($368), the driver caught a ride with Roadway Towing to the impound lot where the vehicle will stay for the next several days. The daily rental fees are approximately $1,000 per day (USD) and still have to be paid as do the storage fees at the impound lot.

Marijuana facility gets license

Annacis Island will soon be home to a large-scale medical marijuana facility. Health Canada has approved a cultivation license for International Herbs Medical Marijuana Ltd. According to the company’s website, the stateof-the-art facility features more than 25,000 square feet for the cultivation and distribution of medical marijuana. The company has been working on the application

for more than three years and its Delta location is the first of its two facilities to acquire a cultivation license to produce medical marijuana. Its other facility is located in Atholville, NB. It is also one of the first companies in the Lower Mainland to receive a cultivation license and one of the few companies in Canada to get the license on the first pre-license inspection.

New owners for Pt. Roberts golf course Course will remain closed until next spring as revitalization efforts just getting underway

did not work out, Kenji decided to sell the property,” added Knowles. “Coco appreciates Kenji’s vision and what he tried to do. Kenji has plans to build a sailboat and enjoy his retirement, but he is very happy with Coco and someone who has the financial ability to get done what has to be done.” Local contractors started work rejuvenating the course this week. The team includes original site superintendent Rick Hoole and Ladner architect Wayne Carleton. Knowles said the holes will remain the same, but the course needs to be aerated and the greens need to be replaced. The existing clubhouse will also remain, but there are plans to build a new one by the eighth tee box. “I think the reaction from residents will be very positive,” he said. “Now that we have a new owner who understands golf and knows golf, it’s exciting for the community. It would have been awful for Point Roberts to lose this golf course.”

The Point Roberts Golf and Country Club has a new lease on life. Last week a sale was finalized between former owner Kenji Nose and Bald Eagle Valley Resort Holdings Ltd., a Washington state company. Bald Eagle’s managing partner Coco Luo, a Richmond resident, will oversee the revitalization of the course with a planned re-opening next spring. “This course is very important to the people of Point Roberts and when it closed last year, it was a sad situation,” said realtor Wayne Knowles of Cassimar US, who spoke to the Optimist on behalf of Luo. “But I’m very excited with the new owner. She owns two courses in China, is a passionate and avid golfer. She wants to bring the course back to its original beauty like it was in 2000.” In January, Nose

Cyclists that took part in last weekend’s Tour de Delta are calling for a safer passing law in B.C. Justine Clift is a member of Cyclery-4iii cycling team that has partnered with the BC Cycling Coalition to raise awareness of the issue. The advocacy was sparked following the death of teammate Ellen Watters in December while she was out on a training run in New Brunswick. Following her death, the New Brunswick legislature moved quickly to pass “Ellen’s Law.” The safer passing law states that a motor vehicle driver can pass a vulnerable road user (a person cycling, walking, using a wheelchair, riding a horse) by at least 1.5 metres; and if there is more than one lane for traffic in the same

direction, the driver would have to have to pass in the lane next to the one a vulnerable road user is travelling in. The BC Road Safety Law Reform Group, which is comprised of reps from the Trial Lawyers Association of BC, the BC Cycling Coalition, HUB Cycling and health researchers, would like to see a similar law passed in B.C. “People want to feel safe on their streets,” said Clift. “So many people cycle for recreation, for transportation, for sport. We hear from people that they are afraid and being in traffic is one of those barriers, so anything we can do to get more people on bikes is very important. “One of those steps is having better protection in place. It took a tragic death in New Brunswick to get a law in place, but it shouldn’t take a tragedy to inspire a common sense

law.” Clift said this law would make cycling and walking safer and more comfortable for road users. “With the transition in government in B.C. we are waiting until we see what that will look like, but we are already talking with government to set up meetings because they are setting their agendas, so now is the time to speak up,” added Clift. The BC Road Safety Law Reform Group is calling on supporters to visit bccycling.ca/safer passing and share their experiences with vehicles on the road. Cyclists are also encouraged to share their experiences online by Tweeting to @bccycle and using the #PassSafeBC hashtag. Safe passing distances have been specified by more than 27 jurisdictions in North America, including Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia.

Grab a burger, enjoy the entertainment and help support the Little House Society in the process. The Little House Society and the Ladner Rotary Club have partnered to host a barbecue fundraiser on Sunday, July 23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kirkland House (4140 Arthur Drive, Ladner). The fundraising event will feature food and drink courtesy of Save-On-Foods in Ladner, entertainment, games and a chance to win a number of raffle prizes. The event is open to the whole family. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for

children, which covers your food and drink. Raffle tickets cost extra. “With Canada celebrating its 150th birthday, it was a chance for us to create a unique heritage themed event,” said Little House executive director Elena Murgoci. “Our intent is to do this fundraiser every year to get the word out about the Little House and the services that we provide in the community. Partnering with such a great organization like the Ladner Rotary Club is also very important to the events success.” Murgoci is hoping to see between 150 and 200 people come out. ith the fate of the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project in limbo these days, the folks over at municipal hall are doing what they can to keep the $3.5-billion initiative alive. A bit of a lone wolf when it comes to supporting the 10-lane bridge, Delta now finds itself without a like-minded Liberal government, so it’s put together a comprehensive package of information in an effort to convince the incoming NDP government that it should carry on with the controversial project. Delta has focused its persuasion efforts on the need to safeguard the public and the economy, particularly as it relates to the tunnel’s seismic situation, as well as the costs and shortcomings of other crossing options. I’ve read through the package and it’s clear that Delta has rounded up some compelling evidence to support its position. A couple of things stood out to me, including the sobering contention that it’s not technically feasible to upgrade the tunnel to meet current seismic standards, a finding of a report done a decade ago after the first phase of seismic work had been undertaken. A more recent report says the tunnel would only be able to withstand a one-in-275-year earthquake, which is far below today’s one-in-2,475-year standard. As far as building a new tunnel rather than a bridge, a favourite rallying cry of project opponents, reports in Delta’s package show it would be more costly ($4.3 billion vs. $3.5 billion), have greater environmental impacts and take far longer to get the necessary approvals. Civic officials are looking to get a face-to-face meeting with premier-designate John Horgan and Green Leader Andrew Weaver to explain all this to them in person in the hopes of convincing them not to delay or abandon the bridge project. You have to be living under a rock, or perhaps just at 12th and Cambie, to suggest nothing needs to be done about B.C.’s biggest bottleneck, so if the two leaders accept that action is required, Delta has put forward a persuasive argument that a bridge is not only the way to go, but, due to public safety, is needed sooner than later. It’s anyone’s guess whether this effort will succeed because we all know that politics trumps data every time.

Rules need to be changed so the game is fair to all players

I

n my column of June 2 I requested readers contact me if they were aware of empty or rented homes in their neighbourhood. The result of that was quite surprising regarding the number of responses and the resulting number of homes sitting empty or rented to problematic neighbours. Even our own neighbourhood and the one adjacent had issues. Primarily the complaints were empty homes that weren’t being maintained and a variety of complaints about rentals from upkeep to numerous visits by emergency services. I think the bottom line in all this can be explained by a game we used to play when we were kids. In the 1950s we spent a lot of our spare time playing Monopoly. This was way before Super Mario and PlayStation, and Monopoly taught us many life lessons, not emotional or relationship issues, but real life issues about saving money, investing, paying taxes, and the ups and downs of finding some level of financial success. The mother of one of my friends, Brian, allowed us to set up the game in the corner of their living room and we left it there so we could continue it all summer. We played by the rules Parker Brothers issued and if we didn’t understand something, Brian’s

Community Comment GREG HOOVER

mother would explain what the game wanted us to do. Now what would have happened if Brian’s mom told us there was an exchange student coming who loved to play Monopoly. We would have to be good Canadians and let him play in our game and understand he might play a little differently from us. He arrives and the game starts. We each get the $1,500 standard start-up money as the rules dictate but he doesn’t need it. He brought his own money. It looks like Monopoly money but it’s not the same money we have. We don’t know where he got it, or who made it, but Brian’s mom says that’s his business and the game must go on. It’s obvious from the first roll of dice that this isn’t going to be

the game we were used to playing. Sure, most of the rules are still the same but his basket of money allows him to purchase every property he lands on and he doesn’t have to pass Go to collect $200 to have cash available. Having to pay taxes or to “get out of jail” was also not a problem for him and his basket of cash. As he purchased property he built as many homes as he wanted where we were limited to four houses and one hotel, if we could afford them. It would become obvious, very quickly, that with this huge basket of money and being allowed to change the rules to suit his needs meant there wouldn’t be much sense in trying to win this game. We would have lost interest because we wouldn’t see the game as being fair or played by the rules we were used to. I really enjoyed Monopoly the way we played it and I hope “Parker Brothers” wakes up and changes the rules to stop players with baskets of money from changing the way the game is played. Enough for now, back to my mindless Game Boy! Greg Hoover is a project manager in industrial and commercial construction who has lived with Christina in Tsawwassen for 25 years.

Bus driver comes too close for cyclist’s comfort

Editor: I was cycling northbound along Ferry Road in Ladner with two friends last Thursday morning when a shuttle bus came too close to ignore. My friends and I chose this quiet route to the Millennium Trail so we could enjoy ourselves and not worry about traffic. At times, we cycled side-byside, chatting and catching up, but were conscious of the vehicles around us and moved into single file when we heard vehicles approaching. As we came upon

Chesapeake Landing, we looked back to see a shuttle bus. We had plenty of time to move into one line and there were absolutely no other moving vehicles in either direction on this quiet, wide street. Before I knew it, the bus was upon me and rumbled by within a foot of my shoulder, scaring me badly. I panicked because I had nowhere to go being stuck between parked cars and the wall of the bus. My nerves were shot afterwards and I was left feeling absolutely stunned that

a public bus would not attempt to give a cyclist at least three feet of space, especially with plenty of room to do so. My husband is an avid cyclist and experiences similar run-ins with these shuttle bus drivers (and other drivers as well). Repeatedly, drivers have shown little regard for the comfort and safety of cyclists for some invented reason like they pay taxes and we don’t. Perhaps if they were made to ride a bike, their feet clipped into their peddles with a shuttle

bus barreling past them at the maximum speed limit while a parked car blocked their only escape, then they might drive with more consideration. This driver needs to know that I am a mother of two, a wife, a sister, a daughter, a granddaughter, a teacher, a community volunteer, a dog owner, an occasional cyclist, and I pay taxes for my vehicles and my property just like everyone else. The roads are already challenging enough for cyclists with cars parked in marked bike lanes, gar-

bage and debris littering road shoulders, and potholes and other obstructions forcing us out into car lanes. We constantly have to be on alert in order to maneuver the reckless behaviours of dangerously distracted or oblivious drivers as we know we wouldn’t stand a chance surviving a collision. Our public buses should be our most trained commuters and our day-today drivers should take a moment to recognize they will get to their destination on time and in one piece

even if slowed by a cyclist for what equates to a mere moment in time. Perhaps some cyclist empathy training should be part of every driver’s education, especially our transit drivers. Cyclists aren’t on the road to make a driver’s life miserable; they are trying to do some good for themselves and for our environment. Does one really need to be told that a mother’s life is worth more than a three-second delay in one’s commute? Jen Wilson

Liberal bridge spin offensive Editor: Re: Silent majority must let Horgan know, letter to the editor, July 7 I am offended by the letter from Dylan Kruger, executive assistant to Delta South MLA Ian Paton, as it points that Paton and the BC Liberals are resorting to Trump-style “fake news” and “alternative facts” in their attempt to support the now $12 billion bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel. The term “silent majority” is used by weak politicians to gain public support for a dubious cause; the fact is many people I have talked to in Tsawwassen think the bridge is far too expensive for what it will do and cause gridlock in

Richmond. Kruger attacks on any and all who do not support Christy Clark’s vanity project, using tired cliches about tunnel safety and twinning the tunnel being too expensive. Kruger’s assertion the new bridge will be fully capable of accommodating rapid transit is outrageous. There are no plans to extend rapid transit on the proposed bridge and there is no funding for such a venture in the foreseeable future. I challenge Kruger to give evidence of a major bridge having rapid transit added many years after it opened, especially a cable-stayed bridge. Here is a hint: buses are not considered rapid

transit. Freedom of information documents tell a different tale about the proposed bridge and it is not one of tunnel safety or traffic congestion, rather it was intense lobbying by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and Fraser Surrey Docks to replace the tunnel with a bridge to expand trade opportunities. Translation, the ports wanted to deepen the Fraser River to allow Panamax tankers, colliers and bulk carriers. Today the port authority says is will not dredge the Fraser for large vessels because it is too costly, so the reason for replacing the tunnel has vanished. Malcolm Johnston

Trying to avoid run-in with a dog

Editor: To dog owners who wonder why they have such a poor reputation, let me tell you about this lady who missed out on the “sugar and spice and everything nice.” It’s sunny and I’m cycling into the narrow trail between the woods and the water reservoirs that we built in upper Tsawwassen for Point Roberts. I spot the tail end of a dog that could be a long-haired German shep-

herd and the rear end of its owner, a blonde woman who’s 50 or so. Not wanting to alarm the dog and thereby provoke a vicious attack, or startle its owner, I call out, “Is your dog on a leash?” “What?” “Is your dog on a leash?” “Ah, F#@K OFF!!” she replies with all the venom she can muster. I think it’s a fair question to ask: “Is your dog on a leash?” Public health agencies, for example,

insist that pets be locked away before their nurses and physiotherapists enter homes. Why? Pets, especially dogs, are often overly protective of their owners in confined spaces. Greg J. Edwards

NDP told to proceed with bridge Editor: I believe it would be a grave mistake for the NDP to defer the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project to the decision of the Metro Vancouver Mayors’ Council. It would make John Horgan appear weak in the eyes of the B.C. public and cause greater delay than necessary for all those who commute through the tunnel. As a homeowner in Delta for the past 40 years and in an occupation that required me to transport my tools to job sites in

all areas of the Lower Mainland, I had no choice but to drive north through the tunnel. In earlier years the tunnel was maintained far better than it has been for at least the last 15 years. Poor lighting and lack of clean or tiled walls in the tunnel causes drivers to drive unnecessarily slow, plus a huge increase in truck traffic exacerbates the situation. I challenge Horgan and his alliance to move forward with the bridge, but with a greater eye for the future by scaling down the number of lanes from 10

Police dep’t puts human face on annual report

IAN JACQUES

The Delta Police Department’s annual report has a different feel this year as it puts a focus on telling the stories of the men and women behind the uniform. “Although facts and figures are sprinkled throughout, we more or less wanted to focus more on the people in uniform as well as police staff that work behind the scenes and give you an inside look at the people and operations of the Delta Police Department,” said public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks. Examples of this include a story that highlights police welcoming Syrian families relocating to Ladner, while Const. Mike Whiteley from the traffic section gives

insight into what goes into an investigation following a serious motor vehicle accident. There is also a first-person account from Const. John Smith who was one of the first responders on scene that fateful night last September when nine people overdosed from suspected fentanyllaced cocaine during a 20-minute period in South Delta. “These stories are an effort to show more of the human side of policing and what goes on behind the scenes of what you may not generally see, but definitely goes into providing a full service to the community,” added Brooks. The report was distributed recently through the Optimist. It is also available online at http:// deltapolice.ca.

Agency of last resort employs crisis de-escalation tactics Chief says Delta police do not want to criminalize mental illness

DPD Strong

CHIEF NEIL DUBORD

Across Canada and the United States — and, in fact, the world — mental health has become one of the most serious issues facing the police. The reasons why we are seeing an increase in severe mental illness across the board is not entirely clear; some connect it to drugs and alcohol while others suggest it has simply become more public. Reasons aside, the police are often the last line of defense when a person is suffering from a mental health crisis.

We are the agency of last resort that is available 24/7. Whether it is druginduced or a bona fide psychiatric illness, our role as the police is to keep the individual safe until they can be treated. Throughout North America we have seen some horrific events ending in serious injury or death that involve a mental health crisis, but the reality is the vast majority of people are not a harm to others — they just need help. The Delta police do not want to criminalize mental illness in our contacts with people in crisis, which is why we have made the fundamental shift towards de-escalation. De-escalation is a simple concept, but it is not easy. The varying circumstances of each individual event make de-escalation highly complex. Our officers use de-escalation tactics in an effort to slow things down, to allow for the opportunity for an

The first half-acre of the Farm Roots Mini School is in full production and residents of Boundary Bay are enjoying a wide variety of vegetables and herbs sold through the honour box stand at the former Boundary Beach Elementary site. You don’t have to live in Boundary Bay to access these fresh delicacies. The farm stand is open during the day and residents of Delta and elsewhere are welcome to see and taste what high school students have been growing the past few months. Most of the offerings have been grown from seed generously donated by West Coast Seeds and from seed potatoes donated by local farmer Jack Bates. The seeds were germinated by using light tables in the gymnasium of the school and eventually made their way to raised beds and cold frames that were built by the students. The first field was not

an enormous crop, while other seeds didn’t find suitable ground and were choked or burnt. Jesus explained that the seeds in the story were God’s Word of life and love, the soil was the

attitude of my heart and the clincher was that the “sower,” or farmer, was God. As I drive by the field, I know some seed just doesn’t take root, and the same can be said of God’s word in my heart — sometimes I choose my own way rather than the life-giving way of God’s path, and I end up doing what “I ought not to do” as Paul writes in Romans. But here’s the good news, sometimes I follow God’s path and God’s word takes root and grows abundantly. May you have a wonderful summer, consider what kind of ground you may be and take heart in the lavish love of God who plants seeds of life.

Each day as I come to the church, I drive by a lovely field of corn — at least I think it’s corn, city slicker that I am. Each day the plants are a bit taller and soon, I expect, I will see the stalks begin to form. I am so thankful that our local farmers tend the fields, plant the crops and harvest for all to share. At the same time, I always think of the wonderful story that Jesus told his listeners about a farmer who sowed his seeds in the field. The sower took the vibrant seeds and scattered with wild abandon and abundance. The seeds went everywhere. Some of the seeds fell on fertile ground and produced

Four Winds Brewing Company is presenting Winded, a 5km fun run to benefit Deltassist next Saturday. The family business enjoys working with Deltassist, says Four Winds’ Adam Mills. “To us, it’s the ideal partnership and we’re happy to help,” he says. The upcoming event also includes a post-race barbecue and hopefully some live music, he notes. “It’s going to be great,” says Mills. The start and finish point for the fun run is Earthwise Society headquarters, 6400-3rd Ave., in Boundary Bay. Sign in starts at 9 a.m. while the race starts at 10 a.m. Registration costs $50 and includes a water bottle, two Four Winds beers and barbecue. Visit

raceroster.com to register. There’s a $10 admission fee for non-runners who’d like to attend the after party. The event is also sponsored by Newmans Fine Foods and the RunInn. Deltassist, a social services agency, is in the midst of its first-ever Christmas in July campaign. The response has been awesome so far, says community services coordinator Colleen Danes. Deltassist is accepting donations of food, gift cards, toys for infants and gifts for teens. The non-profit organization is also putting on a barbecue and bake sale at its North Delta office (9097 Scott Rd.) on Saturday, July 29 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with support from Petra’s by L’Aromas, Earthwise and Monte Cristo Bakery. — Deltassist has also put together a Wish List that will help it provide

iscover the wonders of Burns Bog by running, jogging or strolling through the edge of the Delta Nature Reserve at Jog for the Bog. To mark International Bog Day, the Burns Bog Conservation Society is hosting the event on Sunday, July 23 from 8 to 11:30 a.m. The annual chip-timed 5km and 10km walk, run or stroll through the Delta Nature Reserve is open to people of all fitness levels. Runners and walkers start at the entrance of the Delta Nature Reserve, accessible through the Planet Ice parking lot at 10389 Nordel Court. This year’s event features the Strawberry Hills De Dutch pancake breakfast, live entertainment and breathtaking views. “It was a great community event,” said Breanne Northcott, a former volunteer for Jog for the Bog. “All the runners I interacted with were having a great time, while experiencing Burns Bog with their friends and family.”

This year’s Jog for the Bog takes place Sunday, July 23. Jog for the Bog helps raise funds for Burns Bog Conservation Society’s education programs. Since 1988, the society has been actively telling people about the importance of

Burns Bog and the world’s peatlands through its education programs. Peatlands keep our air fresh, and that’s why Burns Bog is called the “lungs of the Lower Mainland,”

according to the conservation society. The society’s education programs include summer day camps, fieldtrips, public guided tours and the upcoming Stepping Into

Nature Festival. Register online at jogforthebog.org. It costs $45 to take part in the 5km and $50 for the 10km option. For more information about Burns Bog Conservation Society and its work to save Burns Bog, visit burnsbog.org. Runners, walkers and joggers who collect a minimum of $125 in pledges get their registration waived. The Scottish Wildlife Trust started International Bog Day to raise awareness about disappearing peatlands worldwide. When the society celebrated International Bog Day in 1996, Canada became the 11th country to join the movement. - Burns Bog Conservation Society hosts other community events, such as the Bog Escape, an outdoor escape room at the Delta Nature Reserve, running in July and August. The society will also be holding a book sale from July 31 to Aug. 4 at Scottsdale Centre and a Wine Sampling Night at One20 Pub on Aug. 17.

Weak thighs increase risk of OA in women

Study shows it’s time for ladies to get squatting

Well on Your Way P.J. WREN

If you work with me and tell me that you can’t squat because you have bad knees, be prepared for my response: “You have bad knees because you don’t squat.” And this is precisely what a recent study — Arthritis Care & Research — has found as well. Weak thigh muscles equal an increased risk for osteoarthritis (OA) in the knee joint, but only in women, not in men. The study found that women who have weak knee flexors, the hamstring muscle located along the back of the thigh and used to bend the knee, had 41 per cent greater odds of knee OA. Women who had less strength in their knee extensors, the quadriceps muscle located along the front of the thigh and used

to help straighten the leg, were 47 per cent more likely to develop knee OA then women with stronger quadriceps. You see if your thigh muscles, in particular your quadriceps, are strong, the muscle will act as a shock absorber and stabilizer for the knee. That’s opposed to weak quadriceps muscles, which allow more stress to be placed on the cartilage within the knee. This increased stress then begins the degenerative process and the wearing down of the cartilage, ultimately causing osteoarthritis. Why women, though, and not men too? The different results could be explained by the muscles’ response to a greater body mass, the researchers say. In other words, men typically have a greater body mass and with that comes increased muscle strength. The muscles in men tend to have more contractile tissue and strength too. However, women with a greater body mass tend to have more non-contractile adipose tissue (nice word for fat) deposited within the muscle. And fat cannot produce as much force.

Increase your thigh strength with exercise, though, and women can improve their contractile tissue and strength and therefore decrease their chances of knee OA. What can you do to increase your thigh strength? My first piece of advice is to learn how to do a good squat. This can be a partial squat, a wall squat, a prone squat, a full squat or a one-legged squat. Whatever the choice of squat you perform, this one exercise can train both your knee extensors and flexors. It will also provide you with a functional movement pattern. Think about it. We all do some sort of squat everyday in our lives. Whether it’s to get on the toilet, sit in a chair or get into our vehicles. I’m also a big fan of step ups, deadlifts, straight leg lifts, lunges and bridges. These exercise also train the thigh muscles. So, go get some professional advice and start training your thighs for stronger, pain-free knees. PJ Wren is a local trainer and writer. You can find her squatting at The Studio in Ladner, or online at www.fitnesswithpj.com.

It gets me outside walking and it only takes me 1/2 hour and I’m done. It has even helped me manage my time as I am usually doing it before I have ball. Best part is that over the last couple of years I’ve already saved enough for my first car!

Uke ’n do it at Tsaw. Library

The Tsawwassen Library is holding a pair of ukulele workshops that cater to all ages later this month. One of the coolest things about the ukulele is that it’s kid-sized, so on Wednesday, July 26, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., children can take part in Uke ‘n Play: Ukulele Basics for Kids. They’ll be taught the different parts of the instrument, how to hold, tune and strum it, and even some chords. Then they’ll put it all together and play some songs. Registration is

required, so call or visit the library. If you are a kid at heart, register for Uke ‘n Play on Thursday, July 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Participants will learn about the history and different kinds of ukes, go over the basics, learn how to read chord charts and play a few songs. Everyone will leave these workshops with a good understanding of the ukulele and a song in their heart. Ukuleles are provided. Everyone is welcome

to the monthly Library Ukulele Jam held on the third Thursday of the month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Library. The July jam has been rescheduled as an outdoor event on Saturday, July 22, 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Highland Park, 5499-13A Ave. Fraser Valley Regional Library offers ukuleles for loan through its Uke ‘n Play collection. Customers can check out the instruments, free of charge, for two or three weeks just like library books.

United ends season with silver South Delta U17 soccer team finishes a close second at Provincial Cup in Vernon IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

They battled intense heat and competition, and even some questionable officiating, but in the end South Delta United overcame it all to finish with silver medals. The U17 boys’ rep team finished with three wins and two ties as it played five games in four days under the blazing sun in Vernon last weekend at the Les Sinnott Memorial Boys Provincial Cup. “They were so close, but it was a great end to a really great season,” said assistant coach Bill Ross. United started the tournament Thursday with one of its most satisfying wins of the season, a 3-0 victory over archrival Port Moody. United lost to Port Moody in penalties at the Coastal Cup, and lost in league playdowns in penalties as well, but it was a different story in the Okanagan. “The boys were on fire,” said Ross. “From the opening kick-off until the end of the game it was totally dominated by our team and Port Moody fully admitted that. The score was probably a little kind.

SUBMITTED PHOTO

The South Delta United U17 rep team came away from the Les Sinnott Memorial Boys Provincial Cup with silver. That was the game our boys had been keying on since the Coastal Cup, so we got off to a great start.” On Friday morning, United won 4-0 over Bulkley Valley before playing to a 1-1 tie against Saanich. “It was a great game. We were just swarming the Saanich keeper at the end, but we just couldn’t get the winner,” he said. “Saanich is a very good team, and they are a total class act, so it was a good result for both sides.” On Saturday, United blasted Williams Lake 6-1, putting the local side in a strong position to win

gold. Because the U17 division only had six teams (the other divisions had eight), it meant a round robin format with the team with the most points winning gold. Sunday’s final game was against Terrace and South Delta United needed to win to pull ahead of Saanich in the standings to win gold. “We knew we had to win, but it was a tough game against a tough team. It ended 3-3,” said Ross. “It was tough. And not to make any excuses, we also had some tough officiating. In fact, the head of officials for BC

Soccer came to our bench after the game and apologized to our boys for the officiating performance. Small consolation to the boys, but that’s just the way that it goes sometimes.” On total points, Saanich won gold, South Delta won silver and Terrace won bronze. “Both teams were total class acts. We couldn’t have asked for better competition,” added Ross. “The fields were first rate and the tournament was fantastic. It was a great experience for our whole team. We’re very proud of the boys.”

Nine days before the tournament, one of United’s team captains, Henry McPhee, got into a vehicle accident and ended up in hospital. Ross brought up Tyler Semler from the U16 team, with McPhee cheering from the sidelines once he got out of hospital. “That just showed what this team is all about. This is just the type of team that they are,” added Ross. “Coach Jeff Skinner did a phenomenal job of preparing the team by scouting games and preparing a professional game plan that was designed to suit our level of play. The boys would run through fire to support Jeff.” United’s roster included: Liam Harris, Gavin Swan, Ben Morrison, Riley Mitchell, Brendan Guraliuk, Jake Mallard, Matthew O’Leary, Kai Graham, Grayson ReadFriedmann, Alexander Stewart, Rowan Childs, Max Cantlon, Kenny Ross, Ryan Parish and Tyler Semler. Jeff Skinner, Bill Ross, Bjorn Read-Friedmann and Tyler Johnson coached the team, while Suzy Parish was manager and Wendy Childs was photographer.

Pioneers clinch top spot, first round bye Senior lacrosse team will get 10-day break after wrapping up regular season on Sunday

On the strength of back-to-back home floor wins, the Ladner Pioneers locked up first place and a bye into the semifinals of the West Coast Senior Lacrosse League playoffs. Despite being outshot 54-51, Ladner pounded the Langley Warriors 18-7 last Thursday. The Pioneers held a 4-3 advantage after the opening frame, but exploded for 10 goals in the second to put the game out of reach. Junior “A” call-up Spencer Bromley, who was signed by the Pioneers on July 1, made an immediate impact, scoring three goals and adding three assists, while Tyler Kirkby had three goals and one assist. Goalie Rob Cook was outstanding in net stopping 47 of 54 shots. Ladner then hosted the Victoria Wolves Saturday afternoon, pulling out a 7-6 win.

After the teams traded goals in the first, the Pioneers opened the game up with a five-goal second period before holding off Victoria’s rally in the third to win its 11th game of the season. Bromley and Dave Yee paced the Pioneers’ attack with two goals apiece, while goalie Kevin Hill stopped 34 of 40 shots. “The Langley game was big for us. We win that one and we clinch and then the Victoria game didn’t matter much, but we won them both, so that’s a bonus,” said head coach Ross Frehlick. “To beat Langley and how we beat them really showed something. Our transition game was strong. We had seven or eight goals in transition and I think another three or four against Victoria, so if we can continue to do that kind of stuff and score off our defence we are going to be a hard team to beat.” Bromley, who finished fifth in Delta Islanders

The Ladner Pioneers dumped Langley Warriors 18-7 last week to clinch first place in the West Coast Senior Lacrosse League. scoring with 61 points in 21 games last season, adds even more firepower to an already potent Pioneers’ attack. “It’s a huge move for us. He can play, but he’s a better kid,” said Frehlick. “So to have that kind of quality individual in the locker room is big. Mike Tebbutt

is another great addition for us. Both these guys want to play and want to be here. They are both lefties and any team can use more lefties, so we are real happy to have them both.” The Pioneers wrap up the regular season this Sunday when they pay a visit to the Nanaimo

By the time that series starts, Sam Clare, Nathan Clare and Dan McDermott will be back from Finland where they are playing for England in the European Box Lacrosse Championships. Add those players into the line-up and Frehlick has a wealth of options at his disposal. “We will have 31 people to choose from. Rob Cook has certainly solidified our goalie position, but I still have no idea who I will start in the playoffs. They are all solid in my opinion. We are in good shape for sure.” Frehlick said the Pioneers will be around town doing fundraising events in the next few weeks for their trip to the President’s Cup, should they qualify, and he’s hoping the community will show their support. “It’s been a great year for us so far. If we keep playing like we’ve been playing, it’s going to get even better,” he said. ON NOW AT YOUR BC CHEVROLET DEALERS. Chevrolet.ca 1-800-GM-DRIVE. Charlie Derrheim shoots 63 to claim MJT Mini Tour title

Delta golfer Charlie Derrheim shot an impressive round of 63 to win the Peewee Boys division at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Mini Tour Summer Series on Monday. It was the first tour win for the 11-year-old. He also took home low overall honours. Playing at the Musqueam Golf Club in Vancouver, Derrheim won the division by four strokes over Nathan Szpakowicz of Vancouver. “I feel very happy and excited about my first win. I think the best thing about my game today was probably my short game,” said Derrheim. The next MJT Mini Tour Series runs Monday, July 17 at Burnaby Mountain Golf Club. The non-profit MJT, presented by Boston Pizza, is Canada’s number one-played junior golf tour as well as the only national junior tour run exclusively by PGA of Canada Professionals

OUR TESTIMONIALS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES! When we called Fraser Elliott it was only a matter of hours that he and Garrett, his teammate, were at our door to view the property and to set an asking price. They were very efficient and helpful. They sold our home within a week and we were amazed at their expertise and handling of the sale. Thank you so much Fraser's team for all your hard work. Well done! - J&H The Fraser Elliott group has been a pleasure to work with (again). I am a repeat customer who is impressed by their attentiveness, responsiveness and their knowledge. Jennifer has been a wonderful help in supporting the sale and purchase process working tirelessly to ensure that I was able to get the best price and that all the dates lined up. I am so thankful to have her on my team. I would recommend Jennifer and the rest of the team to anyone I know and be confident in the level of service and expertise they provide to clients. - Kari Our family wanted to let you know how excited we are the house is sold. Steve and I wanted to thank each of you from the start with meeting Garrett as well as the stager and photographer getting house ready. First phone call from Amber for showing. Thanks Rachel and Julie for the many showings. Thanks Jen for the many phone calls and working really hard, even late at night and getting offer completed, which Garrett was part of too. Fraser, you and your team really care and will be well recommended from us! - Peachey family Garrett gave an appraisal for my home and I considered other realtors, but Garrett's straightforward approach and no pressure attitude led me to list with him. I had reservations about selling during the winter especially after the major snowstorms we have experienced. They sent out a photographer who had to wade in a foot of snow to photograph the outside and despite the weather, the realtor's open house still took place shortly after. It was a roller coaster ride of negotiations which Garrett and Jennifer navigated with great skill and professionalism. The end result was the house was sold in a week. Overall, it was a great experience with the Fraser Elliott Real Estate Group. Well done. I would definitely recommend the Fraser Elliott Group to others. - Don W

To the Fraser Elliott Team, I'd like to thank you for a job well done selling my house. Your team is very professional and competent. No matter what questions I had, you people got back to me immediately with the answers and confirmed by other members of your team. You were always easy to reach, and your expertise and knowledge was very much appreciated. I would highly recommend your team to anyone needing a Realtor. PS. The free moving van was a surprise and really helped, Thank You. - Ralph Rasmussen I'd like to say we developed a great relationship with Fraser's team while we went through the sales process, but the truth is we didn't have time. It was a week from signing up with the team to signing the sale documents! What more can we say? A professional team that executes on their promise like a well oiled machine! They make magic. Bench strength we never imagined. No wonder they are award winning! Not using them would really be your loss. Choosing Fraser's team was the best decision we could have made. Thank you Fraser, Garrett, Julie, Amber, Rachel, James the photographer, and Kashmir the stager. You far exceeded our expectations. We're sold!! - Ray and Joanne M The Fraser Elliott Team, l'd like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to you and your entire staff on what l consider to be an outstanding job on the sale of my condo. From our first meeting you told me that you would treat the sale of my condo the same way you would handle selling a $3 million home. You and your team stood by your word and did exactly that. I couldn't be happier! With the extremely tight window time you and your team was working with you made it all fit together. An outstanding performance by you all and my thanks and gratitude for all your hard work. I feel privileged to have met and worked together with such a congenial group as yourselves and will pass my positive recommendations on the appropriate people. Thanks again for the outstanding effort you all put in for me. Sincerely, - Dave Ennis

Our experience working with the Fraser Elliott group was excellent. We were very happy with all aspects of the service provided - sales agent, photographer and staging advice. Everything we needed was done in a very efficient manner and we were always kept in the loop about what was happening. Phil was a great sales agent. He was always on time, always answered my questions and was professional and honest. He was always upbeat and positive as well as thoughtful and understanding. As a busy mom with three little kids at home, Phil always took my concerns seriously and worked to accommodate our needs. I was very happy with our experience and I recommend Fraser Elliott Group to friends and family in the future! - Sara Raouf Thank you to the Fraser Elliott group for selling our townhouse. We were really impressed with our initial meeting with Garrett, with the staging consultation and with the professional photographs taken of our townhouse. A great big thank you to Julie, Rachel, Jennifer and Amber. They worked really hard on all of our showings and promptly got back to us to let us know the outcome after each one. We would highly recommend the Fraser Elliott group to anyone looking to sell their home. - Bryant and Heather

#7 RE/MAX速 TEAM IN CANADA IN 2016**

I highly recommend the Fraser Elliott team . They are very professional and keep you posted continually . They did an amazing job to get us the best price possible for our house including providing a stager. - Linda Nash We couldn't be happier with the experience we had selling our house with Fraser Elliott group! Everything was done in an efficient way, from the staging, professional photos, showings and negotiations. Philip did a great job selling the place and Garrett was able to negotiate the deal we wanted. All in two weeks! If we ever need to sell again we know where to go! - Liselott and Mike McFarlane

MASSEY, Kevin Douglas George January 31, 1962 - July 11, 2017 It is with heavy heart that we announce that God has taken our son, brother and husband Kevin Douglas George Massey. He died suddenly and peacefully at Surrey Memorial Hospital with members of his family at his side. Kevin was born in Tsawwassen to his loving parents June and Doug Massey. He is survived his loving wife Taunya: children Dustin and Destiny, by his loving sister’s Cheryl, Deborah, Kelly (Husband Karl) and Candace, Nephews and nieces and Uncles and Aunts and friends. Kevin grew up in Tsawwassen. He loved to play baseball. Later, he became a fan of the Seattle Mariners baseball and Seattle Seahawks football teams. Kevin worked in his father’s shop in Ladner, called Massey’s Machine & Marine Shop Ltd., where he learned his trade of welding and fabricating, until the business was sold in 2001. He made many friends and never forgot them during his life. Married his wife Taunya in 1983 and moved in 1994 to Point Roberts, Wash. U.S.A., where, they raised two children Dustin and Destiny. Owned and operated his own business in 2001 and called it Kevin’s Welding and worked at Point Roberts Marina for a few years. Made many friends during his lifetime and will be sadly missed by all. “May God walk beside him on his journey into Heaven and keep him company while he waits for us to join him” Special thanks to all those who thought and prayed f o r K e v i n . K e v i n ’s c e l e b r a t i o n o f l i f e w i l l b e announced at a later date. If you wish to make a donation In lieu of flowers, in Kevin’s name, make it to the Delta Hospital Foundation, S.P.C.A. or a charity of your choice.
