It’s something the community has always needed, according to East Ladner residents who will soon be able to buy their Timbits and double-double coffees closer to home. Following a public hearing Tuesday evening, Delta council

gave conditional approval to an application to build a small Tim Hortons restaurant and drivethru adjacent to the Otter Co-Op gas station on Ladner Trunk Road just east of 64th Street. It’s been a long road for David Longpre of Southborough Investments Ltd., who originally made an application over two years ago. Despite several revi-

A new proposal was soon submitted that had further changes, including a higher sound attenuation fence between the site and adjacent residences as well as the hours of operation being reduced from 24 hours a day to 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. RESIDENTS: see Page 3

Journey special to trustee Rhiannon Bennett once again takes part in Pulling Together, a 10-day canoe trip IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Being out on the water can be such powerful medicine. That’s how Ladner’s Rhiannon Bennett described her recent experience at the 17th annual Pulling Together canoe journey. Bennett, who grew up on Musqueam traditional territory in Ladner, is a Delta school trustee and has been part of these journeys for the past decade. “My cousin Nathan Wilson was on one of the first journeys and was the skipper of a Tsawwassen First Nation canoe for a number of years, so it had a profound impact on his life,” she recalled. “He was always trying to drag the rest of our family out onto the water so we could have the same experience. It wasn’t until I started working for the TFN in 2006 I had the opportunity to go. That first journey had such a huge impact on my life and each journey since has had different impacts on me every time.” This year’s journey took the 20-plus canoes and 300 canoers, representing First Nations youth, elders, community members and public service agencies, on a 10-day trip along traditional waterways from the Sunshine

Rhiannon Bennett is pictured with her 15-month-old daughter Maelona Williams, partner Wendall Williams and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson on July 14 at the City of Vancouver’s 150+ event Gathering of Canoes. Robertson travelled to Vanier Park in the Urban Native Youth Association canoe. Coast to Vancouver. The journey began on July 5 and wrapped up July 14 in Vancouver where the group landed in Vanier Park on traditional Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh territories as part of Vancouver’s 150+ celebrations. Bennett has been on the Pulling Together Canoe Society board of directors since 2013, serving as

president since 2014. “I saw that the organization was growing, but needed some more structure. I just really see that this organization has a huge opportunity for reconciliation,” she said. “It’s hard to put into words the powerful medicine of being out in the water, that’s why we always encourage as many high ranking officers to be in

the canoes so they can really understand what they are supporting.” Bennett said the canoe itself is such a metaphor for life, which is why each journey has a special place in her heart. “Everybody has to be pulling together in the canoe. Everybody has to have a light heart and a good mind, because as soon as someone is in a

bad mood, the canoe gets really heavy and the work gets very hard,” she said. “When your paddles are in sync, you feel good and the canoe feels good, so you can translate those feelings into so many other aspects of your life. When you work together life can be so much easier when you are on the same path and work in the same direction together.”

Residents eager for restaurant on east side of highway

CONTINUED from Page 1 Several residents spoke in favour of the new application at this week’s hearing, some noting the distance they have to drive to get a cup of coffee or something to eat, while also saying the community doesn’t really have a good gathering spot for families. Resident Christine Fischer told council she has had many conversations with friends and neighbours who agree something like a Tim Hortons is needed in the area. Another resident described it as “a common sense” proposal supported by an online petition. Longpre told council the East Ladner Tim Hortons won’t be a typical fast food restaurant and described

Delta council gave conditional approval to construct a Tim Hortons on a vacant lot immediately east of the Otter Co-Op gas station on Ladner Trunk Road. the location as not being in the middle of a residential neighbourhood but rather on a busy roadway, which he said is ideal for people on the go. The only speaker opposed was Emily Johnson, whose mother Christine Halston’s back yard would be just a few

metres from the drivethru. “It’s not very enjoyable sitting in your back yard with idling vehicles as well as rats. Room is limited in this spot which begs the question: Is there really no better location in Ladner for this development?” she asked.

In a letter to council, Halston noted that although many want the drive-thru for convenience, it doesn’t mean it’s the correct decision for a forward thinking, environmentally conscious group of decision makers. Council members discussed commercial land

uses that are allowable on the site, noting businesses such as convenience stores or auto parts retailers could be permitted. They discussed the emission issue with almost all agreeing there would likely be very little impact. The lone councillor to vote in opposition was Jeannie Kanakos, who had also voted against the earlier application, saying the science is there when it comes to adverse health effects and idling cars. “I would ask those mothers if they wanted a drive-thru next to their homes,” she said. A raised median will be added on Ladner Trunk Road to prevent drivers from making a left turn into the drive-thru.

Below regional, provincial and national averages IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Delta’s crime rates remain some of the lowest in the country. That’s according to the latest numbers released by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics. Delta’s crime severity index (CSI) for 2016 showed a slight decline from 2015, dropping from 53.9 to 53.6. That’s well below the averages for Metro Vancouver (94.3), B.C. (93.6) and Canada (71). “Quite simply, Delta remains one of the safest communities in B.C.,” said

Chief Neil Dubord. “Delta is well below the provincial and national average CSI rates. Although the numbers are encouraging, we are steadfast in our approach to drive these numbers down ensuring both the safety of our citizens and apprehension of offenders.” CSI measure both the volume and seriousness of crime by using sentencing data from the nation’s courts. Each individual offence is weighted according to the severity of the sentences handed down by judges. Dubord said the department is in the process of

introducing an enhanced service delivery model that, when put into place, will continue the CSI trending in the downward direction. “I believe we need to be innovative in our policing approach, deploying our resources strategically and leveraging technology to our full advantage,” he said. “Additionally and most importantly we must engage with you, our citizens, to work together to keep Delta one of the safest communities in the province. It is very important to me that our citizens feel and know they are safe in this community.”

Spike passes but auto break-ins continue

The Delta police’s Leave it Empty campaign has garnered mixed results as police continue to crack down on thefts from autos. The campaign was initiated two months ago to raise awareness and encourage citizens

to remove all items from their vehicles. “Fortunately the spike has not continued, however, we are still seeing slightly higher rates than 2016,” said public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks. “Although the

Event sponsored by VILLAGE GOURMET & ROGERS’ CHOCOLATES

number of theft from autos does fluctuate, there is still a smattering of these incidents occurring in both South (Delta) and North Delta. We need to continue to work together to drive these incidents down.”

Delta developers look beyond our borders SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

They’re behind projects that are transforming South Delta, but local developers Ron Toigo and Sean Hodgins also have huge undertakings elsewhere in the region. Toigo’s Shato Holdings recently unveiled designs for a redevelopment of his existing White Spot restaurant in the 1600-block of West Georgia Street in Vancouver, a project that will further change the downtown skyline. The proposal is for two condo towers, a 33-storey and a 39-storey, that would have a total of 350 units. Shato Holdings is also behind the recently completed Spot on Cambie condominium development at West 12th Avenue and Cambie Street across from Vancouver City Hall. President of the Century Group, Hodgins is behind the massive new 3 Civic Plaza tower in Surrey that’s nearing completion, which has become the tallest building in that city.

Ron Toigo’s Shato Holdings has a pair of condo towers proposed for Vancouver, while the Century Group is nearing completion of Surrey’s tallest building. Located near the Surrey Central SkyTrain station, and flanked by the library and city hall, the 55-storey complex will have such tenants as a Marriott International hotel, a Kwantlen Polytechnic University campus as well as 349 upscale residences. A media event was scheduled this week at the $150 million complex where it was to be noted that Surrey is undergoing a rapid transformation as it advances to become the next major business and tourism hotspot outside of Vancouver. Meanwhile in Delta, following a public hearing last month, Delta

council gave conditional approval to a 60-townhouse addition proposed by Shato Holdings for its Tsawwassen Springs development. As far as the Century Group, it’s continuing site preparation works at the Southlands in Tsawwassen where it will build 950 housing units and approximately 80,000 square feet of ground-oriented commercial space. Century Group is also eyeing a major redevelopment of its Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall property that would see several multi-use buildings replace the current structure.

et out those Compass cards because Richmond council has a transitfriendly tunnel waiting for you. The ongoing battle over whether to build a bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel took another turn Monday when city politicians north of the river endorsed a report that calls for a halt to construction and a review of crossing alternatives. The overriding premise of the Richmond report is that a 10-lane bridge would facilitate the expansion of single-occupant vehicle traffic, which is not in line with a regional growth strategy, so a more transit- and HOV-friendly alternative must be found. In that vein, Richmond has offered two possibilities, both of which upgrade the existing tunnel and add either a four-lane or a two-lane tube alongside. I understand the rationale, but I’m not so sure the economics or the logistics work, particularly not for those on this side of the water. The idea of an additional two-lane tunnel solely for transit/HOV effectively extends the existing HOV lanes across the river, which isn’t a lot of bang for $3 billion, considering drivers using those lanes already get to the front of the line. The four-lane option also has two lanes for single-occupant vehicles, but at $3.5 billion (the same price tag as the bridge), it offers a total of eight lanes, four of which would be in an older tunnel that even with upgrades would be well below today’s seismic standards. Richmond’s approach to addressing congestion is to encourage a shift to transit, partly by making it more attractive but also by doing little to nothing for drivers. I get it, but south of the river, where the population is less dense and more spread out, this tactic is far less successful, which is why transit service in these parts is — how should I put this? — underwhelming. Blacktopping your way out of congestion can be a fool’s game but so is believing that an inferior transit system (there’s only passing mention in the Richmond report of future light rail) will magically get people out of their cars. I’m not so sure the new government will require a whole lot of study to dismiss a plan that banks on congestion getting so bad that drivers will have no choice but to turn to a substandard transit network.

No need to scrap everything and start over on crossing How long will the netting that is designed to catch falling concrete hold before a chunk of the decaying George Massey Tunnel lands on your car? When will the next car fire in the tunnel become a safety issue because there is no water access for first responders? These are questions that engineers have asked and answered. Even if it were feasible to retrofit the tunnel to comply with seismic safety standards, what would happen to the 80,000 vehicle trips that currently pass through it daily during construction? A mess of epic proportions is what would happen. We keep hearing about tunnels in Holland and elsewhere that have stood the test of time. That is great but they are not in sensitive seismic areas. Richmond council’s decision to advise the NDP minority government to stop construction of the bridge does by no means guarantee this will be the case but only serves to remind us how politics can affect outcomes relating to public benefit. Listening to Mayor Malcom Brodie on the radio the other morning was a surreal experience. It was as if he was unaware of the whole decision making process within the Ministry of Transportation. Re-analyzing crossing options will only further delay a solution that has already been determined. Additionally, their

Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER

solution supports infrastructure replacement that does not meet current codes that are applied in Canada. For his part, Premier John Horgan should attend a face-toface meeting with Richmond and Delta and make his own conclusions. If he and his government have any political will they will make the call to continue with the bridge. It would be hard to believe that Metro Vancouver voters who, for the most part, brought in the new government, are all antireplacement proponents. Rather, as polling has suggested, they are in support of a new crossing and, in particular, a bridge. When the Socred government came back in the mid-1970s it did not repeal the Agricultural Land Reserve initiated by Dave Barret and the NDP. Instead, it said, “Hey, this can work if we make it work.” That same mentality

should be in place here. There is no need to scrap everything and start over again. If successive governments took this tact on major infrastructure projects, nothing would ever get done and we would all suffer economically and socially. It is abundantly clear that further updates to the tunnel are not in the cards. A twinning option as Richmond suggests is just plain silly and it would appear that a bridge is the preferred option as determined by experts. As to cost, the $3.5-billion bridge price tag has been touted as actually $8 billion by Mike Harcourt and now $12 billion by Community Comment colleague Nicholas Wong. Wong cites finance and interest charges to determine this price but oddly does not mention them in a new tunnel replacement that would be more expensive and environmentally harmful. We are lucky that our newly elected MLA Ian Paton has a firm understanding of the bridge choice and the implications for agricultural land in both Richmond and Delta. Paton is far from a political rookie and I trust him and his Liberal caucus colleagues to hold the NDP to task on this one. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food. He is a Jamie Oliver Food Revolution ambassador.

Narrow-minded thinking must not stop the bridge

Editor: Re: Stop bridge work: Richmond, July 26 Ever wonder why government projects cost so much? Well, when government tries to work out a project of this magnitude, everyone has an opinion, so the poor planners try to balance function and forward planning (10 lanes instead of four, how novel to think ahead). Unfortunately, unqualified people have an opinion, and when combined with a government change, it allows all the whack-a-doodles to come out of the woodwork. It looks like the vultures are now circling, and the only ones who will suffer

will be the residents south of the George Massey Tunnel who have to work north of the tunnel or have to do business north of the tunnel. I have lived in Tsawwassen for 24 years and, to be honest, this debate has been going on for a lot longer than my time in Tsawwassen. I have been caught in traffic, on both sides, I have missed meetings, been late for work, missed family events and suffered with my fellow residents, wondering when government would get off its butt and do something about this out of date, dangerous avenue to the home I love. It is really sad what’s

happening with the progress that has been made. The mayor of Richmond obliviously has not had to plan his day around tunnel traffic or struggle to get downtown for a meeting. I bet he probably lives far away from any tunnel traffic. He is definitely not invested in the tunnel and his comments that it could take another few years to explore the options and to expect more delays send me over the top. In my opinion, the Richmond mayor is narrow minded. It remains to be seen if the new NDP government is as narrow minded. Ken Gallie

Drivers and cyclists aren’t up to speed on rules of the road

Editor: Re: Bus driver comes too close for cyclist’s comfort, letter to the editor, July 14, and Drivers have reason to be wary about cyclists, letter to the editor, July 19 Both E. Tobin and Jen Wilson raise valid concerns over behaviours of not only drivers but cyclists as well. As an avid cyclist, occasional pedestrian and regular driver, it has become clear to me that many of the people who use our roads do not pay full attention to their surroundings and do not know the rules of the road. We were always taught, growing up, “wheels with and feet facing traffic.”

We were also taught that, with the exception of small children, bicycles were not allowed to be on sidewalks. It seems that many cyclists today do not understand the rules and will jump from road to sidewalk and from one side of the street to the other as it suits their travels. This poses tremendous risk for pedestrians and vehicles. Cyclists have a responsibility to ensure they follow the rules; drivers have enough to manage without trying to anticipate the many possible moves of someone on a bike. Cyclists must obey traffic signs and signals as well as

signal turns. Having said this, as a cyclist, it seems that many drivers have no idea how to drive around cyclists. If a cyclist is riding on the road, it is incumbent on the driver to ensure they are passing safely; if there are two lanes, move over and if there is no bike lane, wait until it is safe to pass. The rider has as much right to be on the road as you do. And, no, cyclists are not required to have insurance; the bureaucracy that would need to be put in place to manage and enforce that would, no doubt, negate any possible financial benefit. M. Dog owners should have decency to pick up

Editor: To our new neighbours in Ladner who have discovered the trail along the marina and past the Links at Hampton Cove golf course, welcome. We hope you come to love it as much as we have since moving here 20 years ago. We cherish our daily walks with our dog and

marvel at how lucky we are to be living in one of the most beautiful and charming communities in the world. Six months ago one would be hard pressed to find a butt dumpling anywhere along the trail. Today, it’s all too common and, quite frankly, disgusting.

For those of you who may not be aware, Delta has a bylaw requiring that you pick up after your dog. Please observe that bylaw and have the common decency to do your part in keeping this wonderful community the reason you likely moved here in the first place. Cathy Williamson

Vandals strike book exchange for fourth time

Editor: We live in a wonderful neighbourhood but, unfortunately, our book exchange on 52A Street has become the target of mischief-makers four times in the past two

months. The books have been smeared with whipping cream, then shaving cream, then silly string and, most recently, raw eggs. We’ve had to discard a number of books and are

obviously hoping this will stop. The police have been informed and are tremendously supportive. Their suggestions are being followed. Margaret Jensen

Be an Earthwise Garden Buddy to help seniors stay connected

Bruce Bruce is a smaller 2 year old, 60lb male pitbull mix. He is absolutely stunning in person, a little pocket sized pittie, low to the ground and a little tank. He has been with us since September of 2016 and has been working diligently with his foster on numerous training methods. Bruce has reactivity outside of the home with other animals. While he is normally perfect on leash, the second he sees another dog he gets very excited and stressed and needs to be corrected or taken away from the situation. Meanwhile, IN the home, he is 100% perfection...even with new dogs coming in! He is currently living in a foster home with two other pit bulls and a Chihuahua that have all started drama with him and he has not retaliated once. We have seen five different trainers with a variety of methods and still continue to try more things everyday to find the solution. He is 100% muzzle trained, which helps keep everyone calm. As we said, inside the home he is a breed ambassador. GREAT with kids and all people and even other dogs. He is perfectly crate trained, house broken and knows all the house rules to a T! We are looking for someone who can keep on his training and understand not to put him in a position to make a bad decision. A family that is power breed savvy, active and capable of loving him while providing firm rules and boundaries. As with all our dogs, he is neutered and up to date on all shots and vaccines. Earthwise Society’s Garden Buddies program, which connects community volunteers to seniors who need a helping hand in the garden, has been a huge success. Many seniors in Delta have been connected with Earthwise mentors who help out once or twice a month in the garden, while several trips have been planned from local seniors’ homes to the beautiful Earthwise Garden. However, with 16 per cent of Delta over the age of 65, there is need for more volunteers and mentors. Volunteers don’t need to be garden-savvy as Earthwise is also looking for people who are just interested in being a friendly face to spend a couple of hours with seniors and seniors groups. Stirring your soul Isn’t it a good and joyful thing, in a society filled with drivenness, tension and stress, to be reminded of a book you have read that so absorbed your attention you would readily read it all over again? Perhaps it’s the sentiment of a warm summer’s day perfect for a leisurely read, or the longer bright evenings that invite such a longing. I have had such an occurrence take hold of me this past week. It was really spurred on by the contemplation of what I might speak of at the second Jazz Vespers we will offer at 7 p.m. this Sunday at Tsawwassen United Church. Combining the jazz music of local musi-

er good Jazz music, some meditation through prayer and a hint of an age-old story whose significance is unmatched in human history. Yes, you could read it again in its original form found in the gospels of Matthew or Mark, Luke or John, but sometimes it’s nice to have a story read to us, with a little twist of poetic narrative to bring us to new hearing of something timelessly familiar. Isn’t that what happens when we listen to jazz? The improvisation of good music that is hauntingly familiar yet ever new, comforts and holds us, but leaves us always wanting more. Join us to see if it stirs your soul.

The Little House Society and the Ladner Rotary Club partnered to host a barbecue fundraiser last Sunday at Kirkland House in Ladner that also celebrated Canada’s 150th birthday. Taking part in the ceremonial cake cutting are (from left) Little House vice-president Bob Chancey, Little House executive director Elena Murgoci, Delta South MLA Ian Paton, Rotarian Kerry-Lynne Findlay, Coun. Bruce McDonald and Delta MP Carla Qualtrough. The Little House in Tsawwassen offers prevention and treatment of substance abuse and addiction.

Former mayor reflects on his early days in Ladner The Delta Museum and Archives Society recently launched Our Delta Stories, a project that asks community members to share their favourite Delta story in 250 words or less. The stories will be posted to the society’s social media pages and website, while some will also be printed in the Optimist. The first story comes from Doug Husband, a former mayor and fourth generation Deltan. I spent 21 years living in a “Mayberry” village called Ladner prior to the George Massey Tunnel opening in 1959. Cut off from convenient travel across the Fraser River in the 80 years following incorporation, Ladner retained its small town rural atmosphere. Earlier history: Port Guichon destined as the river’s super port with ferry service from Victoria and ports south. European sail and steamer ships found their way up the west coast of South America and North America, unloading and loading cargo in Delta. The port’s halcyon days peaked in 1892, lasting until 1919.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE DELTA MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES

Port Guichon was a hub for marine traffic at the beginning of the last century. A cannery, warehousing, hotel and rail station accommodated European cargo and travellers destined for points south and onto Eastern Canada. All fell victim to a tidal river and the silt laden shallow side of the Fraser. The industrial and commercial site was slowly but inevitably abandoned. Ladner survived with its farming and fishing industries. Ladner supplied full service for all Delta residents. One could purchase cars and farm equipment locally and service for its fishing fleet, with all

household furnishings and services, including theatre and recreational activity. There was little crime and during my teen years Delta employed three uniformed police officers, all known by their first names. First names were the norm in all retail outlets. Everyone knew each other and, in fact, we were related to many. My favourite store amongst many was Innes & Fenton on Elliott Street. We could buy a tea cup for mom for 10 cents or a box of shotgun shells for $2.49 from a wellstocked inventory.

new fencing club has started in Tsawwassen. Coach and founder Isaac Velestuk says the Benediction Fencing Club puts a priority on having fun. “Fencing, fun, friends, fitness, that’s what it’s about,” he says. The group is open to anyone, says the 21-yearold. Weekly sessions at the Benediction Lutheran Church include work on technique (including basic blade and footwork), strategy and bouting, Velestuk notes.

The group began in May and it’s off to a good start with 15 people involved so far, he says, noting more are welcome. Velestuk says he started the club to try and give back to the church and fencing communities. He says any proceeds go towards the church, which he recently joined. “It’s been a huge game changer in my life, in all honesty.” He also wants to share knowledge about fencing. “I enjoy coaching, so for me, it’s fun.” Velestuk, who started the sport in elementary school, trains with Dynamo Fencing in Richmond. The club will take a twoweek break at the end of August and will resume in September. The monthly cost will be around $40 as of September, says Velestuk, adding equipment is provided.

you go harder, longer and faster while others will weigh you down and slow you down - and this includes some healthy foods that you’d think would be great choices before a workout. So which foods will slow you down? The first are protein shakes. Yes, protein is an important part of our diet, it’s just not a great source of fuel before a workout because it won’t hit your bloodstream quick enough to energize you. Save the shakes for after your workout, not before. What to eat instead? Make a fruit smoothie mixed with water, or a milk substitute. Second thing not to eat before a workout are avocados, or any food high in fat for that matter. You see, what makes avocados so good for us is the exact reason that makes them so wrong for us before we exercise — the high content of good fats. Fat takes a long time to digest, and if you eat foods high in fat too soon before a workout, you will make your body compete with itself for its blood supply – instead of the blood being readily available to the working muscles. This, in turn, could cause cramping that will definitely hinder your performance. What to eat instead? Grab two or three jumbo medjool dates and roll those babies in some coconut flakes or shavings. Another poor food choice before a workout are protein bars. For one, most bars on the market

are filled with fake sugars that can cause some serious intestinal distress mid-squat (not cool). Furthermore, just like protein shakes, the protein in these bars are not the best choice for helping you run those miles or pump those weights. Instead, peel the wrapper back on a banana, not a bar. The fourth food you should avoid pre-workout are vegetables. Any other time of the day knock yourself out with veggies, but not right before a workout, because if you do, you are just asking for trouble —and time on the toilet. Grab a small bowl of oatmeal with a handful of fresh berries instead. Now, you may be wondering, do I really need to fuel before a workout? Not really, if you ate a nutritionally balanced meal two hours prior to the workout. If you didn’t, then the experts recommend a snack (like the ones suggested above) of 100 to 200 calories, 30 minutes before a workout. This will provide you with the right amount of energy, without the stomach ache. With that said, I also know some people who work out best on an empty stomach. Each person is unique, so I suggest you use the guidelines above to find the best way to fuel yourself before a workout. Car buffs find local spot to get together

Common interest sparked Wednesday night gatherings at Ladner’s Trenant Park Square IAN JACQUES

Every Wednesday night (weather permitting) from May to September, the parking lot of Ladner’s Trenant Park Square comes alive with a blast from the past. Started about four years ago, a group of vintage car enthusiasts gets together to show off their babies, swap stories and have some fun. It’s just a bunch of locals sharing a common love for the automobile. “My buddy Vic and I were just talking one day and said we should start something up,” recalls Ladner’s Jack Degraaf. “Thursday had a Richmond show and there are shows in other areas, so we decided to come out on a Wednesday and see what happens. It was all through word of mouth, no real formal advertising.” The gathering is made up mostly of car owners from Ladner and

They had nice wheels on them, but it was always next year I’ll get to this or that,” he says. “It was always my dream to have a car like that someday. It’s a sweetheart, for sure. It’s a nice group of guys. There’s a common interest here. Everyone likes the old cars.” Many of the cars on display weekly will also be at the Quilt Walk and Car Show presented by the Ladner Business Association on Sunday, Aug. 20. South Delta 1999 Invaders outscored their opponents 70-8 en route to eight straight victories to capture the U18B Provincial Championship in Kelowna. The gold medal game was an all-South Delta affair thanks to the upstart 2000 squad’s impressive run.

’99 Invaders exit as B.C. champs All-South Delta final caps dominating run for graduating girls’ fastpitch team MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A terrific run concluded in grand style on the provincial stage for the South Delta Invaders 1999 fastpitch team. Playing their final season, the Invaders captured Softball B.C.’s U18B Provincial Championships in Kelowna in dominating fashion. The girls defeated the upstart 2000 Invaders 7-0 in an-South Delta gold medal game. They outscored their opponents 70-8 in winning eight consecutive games. The ’99 Invaders began their campaign with intentions of repeating their provincial win two years earlier at the U16 level. The busy Grade 12 year, with plenty of other commitments and distractions, makes it a challenge for any team in any sport. South Delta rolled to a 13-1-1 record in Lower Mainland League play but tournaments were a different story. The Invaders failed to get past the semi-finals in four straight events during the first two months of the season. With grad activities finally out of the way, the momentum changed earlier this month play-

ing in the 15-team Futures Select Under 19 Division at the Canada Cup in South Surrey. After dropping a 9-1 decision to longtime rival Kelowna ’99 Heat in their second game, the Invaders rolled to a pair of lopsided wins to conclude round-robin play, then avenged the loss to Kelowna with a 7-4 triumph in the quarterfinals. South Delta then easily dispatched the Washington Tigers 7-0 for the second straight time and took tournament honours with 10-0 mercy-rule victory over Vancouver Island’s Lakehill Blazers. Mary Berger finished with a team-leading 15 hits and .682 batting average. Strong defensive play and solid pitching from Kira Watton and Chantelle Twynstra allowed Lakehill only a single base hit. The dominance at Softball City was a sign of things to come just a few days later at the 19-team provincials under hot and sometimes smoky skies in the Okanagan. South Delta had its hands full in the tournament opener against Ridge Meadows, squeaking out a 1-0 win. The bats began to match

the weather with a 10-3 game two romp of Langley, highlighted by a five-run fifth inning. A 19-3 drubbing of the Kamloops Selects followed, sparked by first inning home runs by catcher Amanda Tabe and Chloe Cartlidge. South Delta unleashed 15 hits in just three innings of work. Excellent pitching by Arnelle Basi and Twynstra paved the way for a five-inning 7-0 win over Fleetwood to conclude roundrobin play at 4-0. The girls continued to fire on all cylinders in the double-knockout playoff round, rolling to an 11-0 win over the View Royal Vipers. The Victoria team had no answer for Twynstra who tossed a perfect game. Third baseman Violet Rally had a pair of doubles, while Berger overcame a strained quadricep to belt out three hits. The Invaders then came through with a 9-2 win over the Cawston Koyotes, avenging a pair of losses including a game that eliminated them at the 2016 provincials. A grand slam home run in the opening inning from Cartlidge highlighted the win over the Similkameen team. Courtney

Palleson, Rally and Tabe also went deep. The first of two meetings with the 2000 Invaders produced a 6-0 triumph to secure a spot in the gold medal game. A five-run first inning and more excellent pitching from Watton and Twystra keyed the victory. The girls then cheered on their younger “sisters” as they came through with a victory over Cawston to set the stage for an allInvaders final. The ’99s will now close out their careers at the Western Canadian Championships in Richmond Aug. 10-13. “It was a good time to peak and exactly what we wanted for the girls,” said Invaders head coach Dave Rally. “The last day at Provincials was very emotional for everyone; players, coaches and parents and given what was said and done that day ended up being one of the best days of my life. I was beyond proud of them.” The Invaders roster also features Mackenzie Boates, Lauren Lucas and Natasha Chow. Mike Twynstra, Jim Cartlidge and Carol Watton round out the coaching staff.

Surprise provincial silver for 2000 Invaders A big statement for local fastpitch at the U18B Provincial Championships in Kelowna included a surprising silvermedal finish for the first-year 2000 South Delta Invaders. The girls weren’t expected to be medal contenders in the 19-team tournament yet were standing beside their 1999 South Delta counterparts in the championship game. The 2000s entered the double knockout playoff round as the fifth seed with a 3-1 record. The Invaders defeated North Shore 8-2, then averaged an earlier loss to Coquitlam with a 4-0 win, behind the impressive pitching of Justine Geboers and great team defense. The win set up a battle of the undefeated teams from Delta. The powerhouse 1999 Invaders beat the younger side 6-0, putting the 2000 Invaders to the bronze medal game with the winner having the right to play in the finals for gold. The girls faced a very tough team from Cawston.

U18B Provincial Championships runner-up: 2000 South Delta Invaders. After the Invaders scored two runs, Cawston fought back to tie the game late and send it to extra innings. The teams each scored three times in the eighth

before South Delta finally prevailed with a pair of runs in the ninth, thanks to a clutch double by Mackenzie Last and a game-winning single by Nicole Shipowich

for a 7-6 victory. The complete game pitching performance by Shipowich in the Kelowna heat was one of her best ever. The final game was one for the Delta Fastpitch Association to be proud of with two Invader teams facing each other for gold. The younger team fell behind early and could not catch the older team in their quest for a provincial championship. “Our team is very proud of what we have accomplished, we fought through many injuries this year at key positions and did not medal in any tournaments all year but the girls dug deep and put it all together when it mattered most,” South Delta coach Jake Geboers noted. The team also includes: Abby Herd, Belle Hancock, Emily Forster, Hannah Dela Cruz, Jaden Moro, Jessica Lauckner, Taylor Bouchey, Taylor da Silva, and Rachel Battie. The coaching staff is rounded out by Lee Bouchey, Steve Lauckner and Crystal Mackenzie.

OUR TESTIMONIALS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES! To the Fraser Elliott Team, I'd like to thank you for a job well done selling my house. Your team is very professional and competent. No matter what questions I had, you people got back to me immediately with the answers and confirmed by other members of your team. You were always easy to reach, and your expertise and knowledge was very much appreciated. I would highly recommend your team to anyone needing a Realtor. PS. The free moving van was a surprise and really helped, Thank You. - Ralph Rasmussen When we called Fraser Elliott it was only a matter of hours that he and Garrett, his teammate, were at our door to view the property and to set an asking price. They were very efficient and helpful. They sold our home within a week and we were amazed at their expertise and handling of the sale. Thank you so much Fraser's team for all your hard work. Well done! - J&H I chose the Fraser Elliott Group to make the sale of my North Delta apartment happen and it did! I personally was confident that I had made a good choice. All the team were respectful and made me feel that my ideas and opinion were valued. Communication was pleasantly and skillfully done by Phil. The end result for the times was good and I would certainly consult them if ever needed. - Lois Garrett gave an appraisal for my home and I considered other realtors, but Garrett's straightforward approach and no pressure attitude led me to list with him. I had reservations about selling during the winter especially after the major snowstorms we have experienced. They sent out a photographer who had to wade in a foot of snow to photograph the outside and despite the weather, the realtor's open house still took place shortly after. It was a roller coaster ride of negotiations which Garrett and Jennifer navigated with great skill and professionalism. The end result was the house was sold in a week. Overall, it was a great experience with the Fraser Elliott Real Estate Group. Well done. I would definitely recommend the Fraser Elliott Group to others. - Don W

Fraser Elliott is a step up from other firms with whom I've listed. They delivered on marketing with professional photos and targeted Facebook marketing. They sold my commercial strata office unit in a matter of weeks, and for a very satisfactory price. Additionally they work as a team, not individual Realtors, and this ensures everything keeps moving. I would certainly recommend their services. - Levi I'd like to say we developed a great relationship with Fraser's team while we went through the sales process, but the truth is we didn't have time. It was a week from signing up with the team to signing the sale documents! What more can we say? A professional team that executes on their promise like a well oiled machine! They make magic. Bench strength we never imagined. No wonder they are award winning! Not using them would really be your loss. Choosing Fraser's team was the best decision we could have made.Thank you Fraser, Garrett, Julie, Amber, Rachel, James the photographer, and Kashmir the stager. You far exceeded our expectations. We're sold!! - Ray and Joanne M The Fraser Elliott Team, l'd like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to you and your entire staff on what l consider to be an outstanding job on the sale of my condo. From our first meeting you told me that you would treat the sale of my condo the same way you would handle selling a $3 million home. You and your team stood by your word and did exactly that. I couldn't be happier! With the extremely tight window time you and your team was working with you made it all fit together. An outstanding performance by you all and my thanks and gratitude for all your hard work. I feel privileged to have met and worked together with such a congenial group as yourselves and will pass my positive recommendations on the appropriate people. Thanks again for the outstanding effort you all put in for me. Sincerely, - Dave Ennis

Our experience working with the Fraser Elliott group was excellent. We were very happy with all aspects of the service provided - sales agent, photographer and staging advice. Everything we needed was done in a very efficient manner and we were always kept in the loop about what was happening. Phil was a great sales agent. He was always on time, always answered my questions and was professional and honest. He was always upbeat and positive as well as thoughtful and understanding. As a busy mom with three little kids at home, Phil always took my concerns seriously and worked to accommodate our needs. I was very happy with our experience and I recommend Fraser Elliott Group to friends and family in the future! - Sara Raouf Thank you to the Fraser Elliott group for selling our townhouse. We were really impressed with our initial meeting with Garrett, with the staging consultation and with the professional photographs taken of our townhouse. A great big thank you to Julie, Rachel, Jennifer and Amber. They worked really hard on all of our showings and promptly got back to us to let us know the outcome after each one. We would highly recommend the Fraser Elliott group to anyone looking to sell their home. - Bryant and Heather

#7 RE/MAX速 TEAM IN CANADA IN 2016**

I highly recommend the Fraser Elliott team . They are very professional and keep you posted continually . They did an amazing job to get us the best price possible for our house including providing a stager. - Linda Nash We couldn't be happier with the experience we had selling our house with Fraser Elliott group! Everything was done in an efficient way, from the staging, professional photos, showings and negotiations. Philip did a great job selling the place and Garrett was able to negotiate the deal we wanted. All in two weeks! If we ever need to sell again we know where to go! - Liselott and Mike McFarlane

TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the: Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711 Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email: inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.
