Residents putting up a stink

More than 150 attend meeting over foul odour from East Ladner composter IAN JACQUES

East Ladner residents are fed up with closing their windows in the summer and putting up with a foul stench they say is coming from Envirosmart Organics Ltd. And now that the composting operation has engaged in an air quality permit application with Metro Vancouver, residents have started a call-to-action campaign.

On Tuesday night, more than 150 citizens packed the Sundance Inn to express concerns, share ideas and hear from Metro Vancouver.

London neighbourhood resident Robert Skinner organized the meeting.

“Many London area residents are very frustrated and angry,” said Skinner.

“I feel like I have been lied to about how the efficient composting operation would hardly ever, if at all, produce any obnoxious smell. The truth is that the acrid foul odours they produce have been invading our personal airspace on many days of the week over the years.”

Last month, at the urging of Metro Vancouver, Envirosmart applied for an air quality permit to give it authorization to discharge air contaminants from its 72nd Street operation.

Ray Robb, district director for Metro Vancouver, said up until now Envirosmart has had solid

waste licenses, which have been Metro’s only regulatory tool.

“There are two things we strive to accomplish,” said Robb. “One is to be fair and make sure that all who are impacted get a chance to voice their concerns and respond and that the company can respond and second, it is our job to protect air quality.

“So we have to determine what an acceptable level of impact is and if it is not reasonable now, how much does it need to improve in the future?

What we strive to do is come up with a permit that provides an adequate level of protection and then employ the best

available control techniques.”

Residents collectively expressed their frustrations with the complaint process, their quality of life being impacted by the smells, health issues and having to deal with other government bodies to get answers that have been hard to come by.

“We have challenged what has gone on, we have written letters, phoned in complaints, signed petitions, but the only thing that has been done is the facility has gotten larger,” said one resident. “We all know composting is a good thing, but the stuff that comes pushing through my home at 3 a.m. is a long shot of a good

thing.”

Following the meeting, Skinner encouraged residents to write to Metro and to be prepared should a full public hearing be called. He said an action group would be formed to monitor the process.

Residents can submit comments until Sept. 25.

Darryl Goodwin with GFL Environmental Inc., which now owns Envirosmart, said in an email to the Optimist that corporate policy is to forward any questions to the media department for response.

“Being I was not invited (to the meeting), it’s hard for me to comment on what was really going on,” said Goodwin in the email.

Document shows NDP to kill bridge: Liberals SANDOR GYARMATI

The governing New Democrats planned to kill the George Massey Tunnel all along, according to the opposition Liberals who have made an internal NDP document public.

The Liberals released one page of a document Wednesday that appears to be an election preparation sheet that includes the title: “PLATFORM PREP — 2017 THIS IS WHAT BOLD LOOKS LIKE.” It shows support for the Mayors’ Council’s transportation plan, including rapid transit projects in Vancouver and Surrey, and states, “We’ll pay for this instead of replacing the Massey Tunnel.”

The document does not appear to be official, nor confirmed party policy, however, that didn’t stop the Liberals from accusing the government of quietly planning to kill the bridge project despite assurances from Transportation Minister Claire Trevena.

“The minister has been trying to pretend the government is not leaving more than 80,000 commuters stranded in gridlock traffic twice a day,” Delta South MLA Ian Paton said in a statement issued by the party.

“Now we have proof the NDP has been deliberately misleading British Columbians.”

A communications official for the NDP caucus said the document

is nothing more than a discussion paper typed up for what appears to be a brainstorming session prior to the election and did not form official party platform or government policy.

The transportation minister announced last week the government is suspending the bridge project pending an independent technical review as well as consultation with Metro Vancouver mayors. The

government said it would examine options, “be it the proposed 10-lane bridge, a smaller bridge or tunnel.”

In that announcement, the government acknowledged “the congestion along the Highway 99 corridor,” saying it would determine next steps based on the review’s recommendations.

Shortly after she was appointed transportation minster, Trevena told the media the corridor congestion is frustrating and she looks forward to working with the region’s mayors to find a solution.

Trevena told the Optimist political parties discuss different policy stands on many issues.

She said the technical review now being undertaken is a responsible approach.

“We want to make sure that when we are doing something as substantial as what needs to be done in that (Highway) 99 corridor that we get it right,” Trevena said.

Tye Shisko

Tye has been living in Tsawwassen since he was born.

He attended Pebble Hill Elementary school where he met good friends. Most notably Sean White and Alex Seibold who would eventually go on to be reliable substitute carriers when Tye was injured or away. He is now in Grade 8 at the local High School.

He loves to save his money from his route, to watch his bank account grow, sometimes taking on 2 routes in the summer. He is a swimmer and is about to complete his Bronze Cross at an early age on his way to being a Life Guard. Tye is most appreciative of the kindness of the customers on his route, particularly at Christmas time with treats and extra money!

One caught after police chase vandals on foot South Delta Crime Beat

TSAWWASSEN

• Sept. 6, 11:30 p.m., 8A Avenue and 52nd Street: Police observed three youth spraying obscenities in red paint onto the brick wall of an outbuilding in the park. The suspects were approached and a foot chase ensued. One of the suspects was apprehended and admitted to taking part in the damage.

Still under investigation for follow up.

• Sept. 7, 7:35 p.m., 1200-block of Hunter Road: Complainant reported they had used the services of “247 Techies” to remotely take control of their computer and assist with a problem. The company informed the complainant they had accidentally transferred $2,000 to their account and needed the $1,500 back in iTune cards and they could keep the remaining $500. The complainant complied before discovering the $2,000 was in fact their money that was transferred from one of their other accounts and they were the victim of Internet fraud.

• Sept. 7, 7:32 p.m., 5300-block of 6th Avenue: Complainant reported their grey Honda 10-horsepower boat motor stolen from their boat parked in the driveway of their residence. The motor is described as a 2000 model BF9.9 outboard engine secured by a padlock that was pried open.

• Sept. 9, 5000-block of Canoe Pass Way: Complainant reported they left two shopping bags on the bench to the right of the cash register while they wandered through the store. When they returned the bags containing $100 worth of clothing were gone.

• Sept. 9, 5:59 a.m., 5200-block of Belair Crescent: Complainant reported they had just heard the front door handle turn and observed two people fleeing when the dog barked. Two suspects were observed looking into neighbouring properties. Police attended but patrol of the area was negative.

• Sept. 10, 10:35 a.m., 5000-block of Chehalis Drive: Complainant reported a break and enter to the garage area.

The garage had been left unlocked. Items stolen included an Echo gas hedge trimmer and Echo power blower.

LADNER

• Sept. 7, 4:47 p.m., 4600-block of 55A Street: Complainant reported their unlocked vehicle was entered sometime overnight. All paperwork was ransacked and approximately $15 stolen.

• Sept. 7, 11:28 p.m., 4900-block of Chisholm Street: While investigating an attempted theft, police located a trailer in the

parking lot that is believed to have been abandoned by the theft suspect(s).

Confirmed that the trailer had been stolen overnight from Richmond. The trailer was processed and then released to the owner.

• Sept. 8, 8:35 a.m., 5500-block of 45th Avenue: Complainant reported their locked vehicle was stolen sometime overnight while parked on the street outside their residence.

The lock from the trunk was located on the street.

A spare key to the car was left in vehicle. The vehicle has a loud aftermarket exhaust, custom rims and stickers above the headlights that look like eyebrows.

• Sept. 8, 7:57 p.m., 5100-block of Ladner Trunk Road: The loss prevention officer at a business reported they were holding a shoplifter who had concealed $328 worth of merchandise and left the store without paying. Police attended and arrested the suspect for theft under $5,000. The suspect was released at the scene to attend court at a future date.

• Sept. 9, 8:58 a.m., 4400-block of 61st Street: Complainant reported their vehicle parked at their residence broken into sometime overnight. The front driver and passenger door locks punched out and the starter assembly damaged. Small change and insurance papers stolen.

• Sept. 9, 9:40 a.m., 4700-block of 54A Street: Complainant reported their locked 1996 Honda Civic hatchback was stolen. No sign of broken glass on the road. Wallet containing personal and bank cards left in the vehicle.

Vehicle break-in suspect arrested after public tip

A 29-year-old Delta man is facing a variety of charges for his alleged connection to several break-ins in East Ladner.

According to Delta police, on Tuesday around 5:25 a.m. alert citizens called police advising of suspicious persons (a male and female) who appeared to be trying car door handles near the 6600-block of London Lane.

Officers responded and located two individuals matching the descriptions.

“Initial investigation

revealed that the male was in possession of property recently stolen from a vehicle in the area,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks.

“The man was arrested and held for a show cause hearing.”

Police have recommended charges of possession of stolen property and breach of (his preexisting) release conditions.

A 24-year-old woman from Surrey was initially arrested, but released after

further investigation.

Brooks said police have been investigating several similar incidents in the area in recent days and weeks, but it is not known if these individuals are responsible for any of the recent thefts from vehicles in South Delta.

“Delta police remind citizens to remove any and all valuables from their vehicles. The Leave it Empty campaign remains a priority initiative for the Delta police,” added Brooks.

Mailboxes breached at apartment buildings

Delta police are investigating a rash of mail thefts in South Delta.

According to police, officers responded to four separate incidents Monday that had occurred overnight on Sunday at four apartment buildings between the 1100-block and 1600-block of 55th Street.

“Suspect(s) made entry to the secure lobbies, in some cases causing damage to front door plates while in other cases there

was no apparent damage,” said department public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks.

“In all four instances the bank of mailboxes had been breached and it is unknown what, if any, mail had been stolen from each compartment.”

In light of the thefts, police are reminding citizens to pick up mail daily whenever possible.

It is also suggested as a matter of safe practice, to follow up with a financial

institution or retailer if expecting a credit card in the mail. Additionally, to follow up with any government agency if expected documents are not received in the anticipated timeframe.

Brooks said forensics investigations were conducted at all four apartments in an attempt to gather evidence.

Anyone with information on these thefts is asked to contact police at 604-946-4411.

Culinary tour is cancelled

The second annual Experience Delta Farm & Culinary Tour scheduled for this Sunday has been cancelled due to unforeseen events.

Recent recordbreaking wildfires and unpredictable heat and rain have delayed B.C.’s harvests, leaving much work still to be done.

“Our farmers need to be in the fields right now harvesting our food,” explains Anne Janzen of Farm Fresh Events.

The event celebrates Delta’s historic farming community.

Janzen says the good news is that after a gruelling winter, spring and start to summer, harvest season is in full swing at last. She says there’s a lot of hard work ahead in the coming weeks.

Mike Windrum was the owner of the lucky first-place duck, netting him a weekend getaway on Saltspring Island at Stonehouse Bed & Breakfast.

Lucy says that RCM-SAR has had a station in Delta for almost 40 years, watching over 600 square nautical miles of ocean off the coast of South Delta.

Former Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Kelly Gruber will be in Tsawwassen tomorrow for an autograph signing in support of survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

Gruber will take photos, chat with fans and sign autographs from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Pastime Sports & Games at Tsawwassen Mills.

The suggested donation is a minimum of $20 per autograph with all proceeds donated to Survivors Supporting Survivors.

Survivors Supporting Survivors spokesperson Andy Bhatti said the event will also raise awareness and provide information on childhood sexual abuse and trauma. The funds raised will go directly to pay for therapy for survivors who can’t afford it.

o much for the idea of a more suitable location.

When the B.C. Lottery Corporation announced last November that Delta had been chosen as the preferred host local government for a new casino, it stated at the time that the Corporation of Delta’s one and only earmarked site, the Delta Town & Country Inn, wasn’t a suitable location. Proximity to the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond and distance from “identified market opportunity” were given as reasons why BCLC would undertake an exercise to find a more appropriate locale, which was almost certainly in North Delta, although the desire to be closer to Surrey was never officially confirmed.

Ten months later the lottery corporation has returned to tell us the Delta Town & Country Inn is, in fact, a suitable site and that a casino located there would have minimal impacts on adjacent gambling facilities. Say what?

It’s obvious the fishing expedition in North Delta failed to turn up a property that fit the bill so BCLC and Gateway Casinos (operator of the proposed casino) have turned to Plan B. What this tells us is that the lottery corporation is eager – some would say desperate -- to locate another casino south of the Fraser River, a market it has determined is underserved, and that when push comes to shove, Victoria’s interests trump all others.

Both the River Rock and the City of Richmond weren’t keen to see another casino set up shop just a 12.8-kilometre jaunt down Highway 99, but those concerns have had to take a backseat given the failure to find a more desirable location in Delta.

It’s been rationalized that a detailed analysis of the Town & Country location using existing player data found there would be minimal impacts on neighbouring casinos, which might well be true, but if it is, why the earlier proximity concerns?

The City of Richmond has collected $167.8 million in gaming revenues since the River Rock opened in 2004, so you can see why both the local government and B.C.’s busiest casino don’t want anyone invading their turf, but such territorial behaviour is no match for the lottery corporation’s wish for a bigger overall gambling pie.

So despite earlier reservations, the Town & Country is the site of choice.

Now it’s got to get the public to buy in.

Keeping tabs on new drivers could just be a hotline away

T

he nature of what I do for a living requires me to drive all over the Lower Mainland in a wide variety of traffic conditions. Back in July I read the preamble to Brad Sherwin’s Community Comment column concerning new drivers with the “L” and “N” stickers and it got me thinking.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been on Highway 99 or Highway 1 and watched in my rear view mirror as a driver worked their way through traffic at over 100 km/h, changing lanes, passing on the right and doing whatever they want to do to advance their position.

When they approach I just stay to the right and let them pass, but much too often as they pass I see a green sticker with a black “N.” Over my lifetime I’ve driven millions of kilometres with few incidents but I’m getting passed by a 16-year-old at 130 km/h with three weeks of experience. That is an accident in search of a place to happen.

The other occurrence is driving on a two-lane highway at 70 km/h in a 60 km/h zone when I glance in the rear view mirror to see a windshield and roof behind

me with a young man wearing a baseball cap backwards. I used to get enraged by this but now I slow down and give them every opportunity to pass, and that’s when I see that green sticker with the black “N.” I don’t blame the police because they can’t be everywhere and if they don’t see the violation, what can they do?

So my suggestion is to have a three-digit emergency number like 911 or 411 — I’d suggest 666 — where after experiences like this I could call (not while I’m driving) and talk to an automated service. I could provide my name, location and description of incident, and license plate of vehicle involved. The hotline could be

managed by ICBC and if numerous drivers call this number and report on the same vehicle, then several things could happen: • ICBC contacts the driver and tells them they must come in for a review.

• They are given a much more difficult test concentrating on the nature of their infractions.

• They are also told their insurance rates are increasing and they must display the “N” for a full year.

• If sufficient complaints are received during that year, they will lose their licence for a period of time and have to be re-certified.

There are too many needless accidents because of this kind of driving and a program like this might keep some of the worst offenders off the road. If it works maybe expand it to the entire driving population.

In B.C. we have no-fault insurance but every driver must have the obligation to drive responsibly.

A driver’s license is not a right.

MLA sets record straight on Liberal ALR reforms

Editor: Re: Food security concerns put onus on protection, letter to the editor, Sept. 8 In his letter, Larry Colero made several erroneous statements about the state of the Agricultural Land Reserve in B.C. and questioned my knowledge of agricultural issues in Delta.

I’ve lived in Delta and have been involved in the farming community my whole life — just over 60 years.

I know the agricultural properties in Delta very

well. Farmers in our community are a tight knit group and I am proud to call them my friends.

For Colero to accuse me of making “anecdotal conjecture” rather than speaking to the facts is to misrepresent my knowledge of our community.

Meanwhile, it’s worth pointing out that while the percentage of agricultural land has decreased across Greater Vancouver in the last five years, Delta’s share of local farms has increased. The fact of the matter is, due in large part to strict local

bylaws enforced by the Corporation of Delta, our community has largely been shielded from issues related to speculation on agricultural land. As Deltans, we should be immensely proud of the work our local farmers do every day.

With regards to the Agricultural Land Reserve, it is unfair of Colero to say that the 2014 reforms “gave industrial activity equal priority to agricultural use on 90 per cent of B.C.’s ALR land.” The term “industrialization” is completely misleading,

untrue and, frankly, fear mongering.

In reality, the creation of a second zone has allowed farmers in areas of the province with shorter growing seasons (in the Peace Region, the Interior, the Kootenays and the Okanagan) to earn a small amount of extra income in the off-season.

The rules are clear: farmers are not allowed to build new structures on their farms in order to house industrial activity.

What farmers can do is utilize existing structures and barns to run small

side businesses, or rent their property out for occasional weddings and community events.

We are seeing the next generation of young farmers continue with farming as they are able to think outside the box with value added opportunities like fresh market stands, corn mazes, petting zoos, u-pick product, craft breweries and so on.

Rather than harm agriculture in this province, these reforms have incentivized local farmers to keep their properties, and continue to grow local

B.C. produce. I have a very faded bumper sticker on my truck that reads: “It’s not farmland without farmers.”

To remove these rules, especially at a time when farmers around the province are hurting because of the devastating effect of wildfires, would be cruel and unusual punishment.

I invite Colero to visit these communities himself, to see firsthand the local farmers who would be hurt by these proposed policy changes.

Give Cell Phone Free Sundays a try Make pouch pocket ashtrays mandatory

Editor: OK, I finally did it. I have been chirping on for a couple years about this idea of Cell Phone Free Sundays. Seemed there was always a reason not to do it.

No reason today, so my phone sits neatly exactly where I plugged it in 20ish hours ago.

Downside? Probably the only thing different from my normal routine was I had to go to two addresses I hadn’t been before: one to pick up a bike for my son and one for a meeting this even-

ing. I had to write the addresses down versus punching them into Google Maps. And I took a wrong turn but figured it out pretty quickly.

Upside? I feel like I was a bit of a better listener today: to my kids, to store clerks, to my wife. And I wasn’t feeling terribly social or anything, probably less so than normal, but I had pretty great conversations at Sully’s hockey with some dads, had great rummy games with Kelton, did crosswords with wife in the afternoon.

To be honest, this was the big reason I wanted to try this. I feel like these tiny computers in our pockets make us, in general terms, less than optimal citizens. I am in no way trying to point fingers — I am as bad as the next guy — I just wanted to see if it made a difference.

Could it be a thing?

Four Tsawwassen parks now have ‘little libraries’ The Rotary Club of Tsawwassen and its partners helped fill one of four Little Free Library locations at Diefenbaker Park with new books Monday.

There are three additional Little Free Library locations at Pebble Hill Park, Grauer Park at South Delta Recreation Centre and Beach Grove Mini Park. All are now stocked and ready for use.

President Laura Dixon said the project is perfect for the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen because it represents the core values of its members: community, partnerships and education.

“All we ask of the community is that you come by from time to time drop off a book you think others may enjoy, take a book you would like to read — it’s that simple,” Dixon said.

The project is in partnership with the Delta School District, Delta Community Literacy Committee and Corporation of Delta.

Cadets to pay tribute to veterans at annual Battle of Britain parade

Nearly 1,000 Royal Canadian Air Cadets from the Lower Mainland will gather at Boundary Bay Airport this Sunday to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

The cadets will be honouring veterans, of which many were Canadians, of that famous air battle during a parade and flypast at

1:30 p.m.

This year’s reviewing officer is Lt.-Col. (ret) Maryse Carmichael.

Carmichael is an accomplished pilot who became the first woman in Canadian history selected to fly with the famous Snowbirds aerobatic team. In 2010, she was named as the first female commander.

Carmichael is currently the honourary president of the Air Cadet League of Canada.

Confirmed flying activities include a Harvard Mark II and the Fraser Blues demonstration team. As well, there will be static displays including locally-owned Harvards and a Stearman bi-plane.

Southlands update on Probus agenda

Southlands project manager Brad Semke will be speaking at a South Delta Probus Club meeting next Wednesday.

Semke will provide a brief update on the Century Group project, including the agricultural lands, the Southlands Community Farm, Market Square and the future housing options.

The 215-hectare (537acre) Tsawwassen site is bounded by 56th Street

on the west and Boundary Bay Road on the east and will eventually see 950 housing units built on 20 per cent of the property.

The remaining 80 per cent has been given to Delta, much of it for farming.

The project received final approval last sum-

mer.

The Probus Club of South Delta is a nonprofit, fellowship club for retired and semi-retired professional and business people.

She is great with other dogs, big and small, but she likes to rule the roost at home so either a home where she can be queen of the castle or maybe one other dog that can let her be the star is ideal. We do not know about cats. She is a mellow and somewhat lazy little girl, requiring a walk a day followed by snuggles and nap time. She does love her crate to the point that she will guard it and sometimes doesn’t like coming out.

We feel a home with small rambunctious children would be too overstimulating for her and set her up for failure. She is great on leash and house broken. Most people don’t plan on death coming soon.

When you’re young, you tell yourself, “I don’t have to even think about that for another 50 years.”

And that may be true.

But death knocks at every door. The Bible says that each of us has an appointment with death: “People are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment” (Hebrews 9:27 NIV).

Maybe your appointment comes much later in life. On the other hand, it may come much sooner.

It boils down to this: live everyday as though you may never have another one. Live ready to step into God’s presence at any moment.

The annual South Delta Terry Fox Run has a new location this year with the South Delta Recreation Centre serving as the start and finish area.

The location change was due to the growth of the event, says co-chair Jill Moore.

The cancer research fundraiser, put on locally by the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen, is a noncompetitive event where participants can run, walk, rollerblade or cycle.

Strollers and dogs on leashes are also welcome.

There are still 5-kilometre and 10- kilometre route options.

“Just about every family is touched by cancer,” says Moore, noting Fox initially hoped to raise a dollar from each Canadian.

To date, over $750 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Fox’s name.

“Trying to keep it going, I think, is really important,” says Moore.

There will be music,

food and draw prizes after the run back at the recreation centre. There will also be a separate draw for a TV that costs $2 to enter.

Holly Doolan, another co-chair for the local run, says she does half marathons and often thinks of Fox while she’s running.

“He was just such an inspiration,” she says.

Fox began his Marathon of Hope from St. John’s, Newfoundland and ran for 143 days, covering over 5,000 kilometres, with an artificial limb.

He stopped outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario. His cancer had spread to his lungs and Fox died when he was just 22.

Registration for the South Delta Terry Fox Run begins at 9 a.m. and the run starts at 10 a.m.

Tribute band to play Genesis Theatre DAVE WILLIS

The tribute band Dreams is coming to Genesis Theatre and is bringing the music of famous rock band Fleetwood Mac along for the ride.

The group will perform a concert next Saturday at the Ladner venue.

“We do all of the hits.

Whatever we can fit into a show,” says band member and Ladner resident Rachael Chatoor, who performs as Christine McVie. Chatoor says Dreams has performed across Canada and the U.S. but this show will mark the first time they’ve played in Ladner.

“It’s going to be wonderful fun,” she says.

She says the band has fun on stage and tries to emulate the Fleetwood Mac members as best they can.

Luminary Festival lights up Kennedy

The Corporation of Delta held its annual Luminary Festival last Saturday at the Kennedy Seniors Recreation Centre in North Delta. Moved indoors due to inclement weather, the sparkling end-of-summer festival saw participants illuminate themselves and create lanterns. This year, in honour of Canada’s 150th birthday, participants were encouraged to wear red and white. Prizes were handed out for best costume and best lantern.

Mounteney’s CD release show set for arts centre DAVE WILLIS

Vancouver-based singer LJ Mounteney will hold an official CD release concert at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre Sunday.

She’s marking the release of Here in the Dark, Mounteney’s first solo CD. It came out in late 2016 and took her about two years to complete.

Mounteney, who sings jazz, blues, pop, R&B and big band swing, enjoys singing multiple genres of music.

“I like to be able to get up with the 11-piece R&B band and really belt it and then turn around and do something really intimate and sultry with a trio,” she says.

Mounteney has been performing as a solo artist, along with being in a duo as well as being involved with a gypsy jazz band.

The CD includes her original song and title track Here in the Dark.

The show is at 7:30 p.m.

Explore night sky in free Boundary Bay program

Interested in astronomy but not sure where to begin? An opportunity is available next weekend to join other willing and able amateur astronomers whose telescopes may offer a glimpse of the universe.

The Boundary Bay Park Association is hosting Stars in Focus on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m.at Cammidge House. There is no registration fee for this event.

The date has been specifically selected as the day before — Sept. 22 — is September equinox when the sun will shine directly on the equator and there will be nearly equal amounts of day and night throughout the world.

It is also the first day of fall (autumnal equinox) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of spring (vernal equinox) in the Southern Hemisphere.

This phase will present an opportunity to observe faint objects such as galaxies because there will be

no moonlight to interfere.

However, visibility will be influenced by weather conditions.

Stars in Focus will be broken into two components. The indoor session will be held in the historic Cammidge House in Boundary Bay Regional Park where a presentation will be made by a member of the UBC Astronomy Club. Light boxes will be provided for watching common constellations and other contributors will offer their knowledgeable background.

The outdoor component to follow — weather permitting — will see

telescopes and astronomical maps made available. More experienced astronomers are encouraged to bring their own equipment.

The program is scheduled to end at 10 p.m. but could run as late as midnight.

Neil Simpson, a member of the co-ordinating committee, says the parking area behind Cammidge House will be blocked off and used for setting up scopes.

Simpson says those with an interest in astrophotography are welcome.

“Such a hobby that requires patience, experimentation and determination,” he says.

Hot chocolate and popcorn will be available.

Lengthening Shadows was a challenging title for the South Delta Artist Guild’s September show, but its members took up the challenge, grabbed the canvas and set up their easels.

Painting what you see may sound easy, or so says the novice, but capturing the object of the painting in order to show the viewer what the artist wants you to see is the first step in determining the composition.

Since using shadows can create a path to the focal point, an artist will use that element of composition to accent the focal point, contrasting darks with lights to show off the centre of interest in any painting.

Heather Boyle’s Market Day reminds of a bicycle, a basket full of fresh finds at a market and the fact fall is changing the landscape.

Darren Naylor may have some restless nights figuring out his game day line-up but he will get little in the way of sympathy from the rest of the teams in the Pacific Junior Hockey League.

The Delta Ice Hawks general manager and head coach has stockpiled some impressive talent that is off to a fast start out of the gate.

The Hawks began the 2017-2018 campaign with a 10-2 win in Mission, then produced a dominating 5-1 victory over Grandview on Tuesday in their home opener. They have outshot their opponents by a combined total of 98-53.

How good has Naylor’s recruiting efforts been?

In the past week he has had to move a pair of defencemen who helped him reach the PJHL finals last season. Nathan Flay was traded to the Port Moody Panthers and Matthew Dyck, an impressive AP a year ago, is now with the Abbotsford Pilots.

“It’s tough letting a kid like Matthew go because I have coached him so much over the years,” said Naylor. “A lot of teams wanted him but I wanted to make sure he was going to a good team that hopefully will go through the same thing we will this season. Flay was another great kid in our room but it’s the num-

bers thing again.”

More difficult decisions are looming.

Forwards Brad Crompton and Jonathan Stein,— two of their top three scorers from last season — have been welcomed back in the past 10 days. They also learned speedster Teddy Prior, 18, was returning from his tryout with the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

The club’s depth reflects Naylor’s coaching work with 1999 and 2000 born players — which happens to fall into the same age group of his 17-year-old son Jordan — the team’s starting goalie.

Crompton and rookie Ryan Hart are the only 20-year-olds on the Hawks’ roster this season.

They have 10, 18-year-olds and nine 17-yearolds.

“I know all these kids,” continued Naylor.

“A lot of times when you pick these teams you have to question their character too but I know the characters of all of them and it’s good.

“There is a lot of inter competition going on and you are sometimes looking for even the smallest thing to hold someone out (of the line-up).”

Naylor dressed five rookie defencemen Tuesday and the Hawks still dominated from start to finish.

They built on a 2-1 lead in the second period thanks a spectacular effort by sophomore Alex Suprynowicz, then added another

shortly after on a terrific feed from Jordan Deyrmenjian to Mark Ephstein.

Impressive rookie Jonathan Rees, 17, closed out the scoring with his second of the night.

He now has six points in two games playing on a dominant line with veterans Daniel Rubin and Deyrmenjian, who already has eight points.

Naylor is looking forward to a tough battle tonight in Abbotsford in an early season showdown. The Pilots (2-1-0) have scored 17 goals in their two wins.

“That’s what I’m hoping for and I just told the guys it should be our first real test on Friday,” added Naylor. “They certainly gave us a hard time last season.”

The impressive efforts of first-year team owner/president Eduard Ephstein were certainly noticeable on Tuesday.

The game day presentation included free coffee and hot chocolate from team sponsor Blenz Coffee. The rink and lobby area were decked out in Ice Hawk colours, while Delta Figure Skating Club member Sara Morrow performed in the first intermission.

The team also unveiled its new home uniforms with yellow replacing white as the base colour.

South Delta Pee Wee Rams kicked off their Vancouver Mainland Football League schedule last Sunday by battling the Richmond Raiders at Minoru Park.

Kurtis Reid will be proudly representing his province and hometown at the Special Olympics Canada 2018 Summer Games in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

Reid was named to Team B.C. following his outstanding performance at the Special Olympics B.C. Summer Games held back in July in Kamloops. That’s where he earned gold medals in the 100 metres, shot put and standing long jump events.

When Reid isn’t competing in athletics, he is making a difference in his community.

As a young adult with Down Syndrome, he is impressively juggling three jobs — working at Thrifty Foods, the Reach Child Development Society as a PlayGroup Assistant Society and as a newspaper carrier with the Delta Optimist.

Despite his busy schedule, Reid also finds the time to volunteer for Delta Parks and Recreation, as well as Sacred Heart Church.

His participation in Delta Special Olympics goes beyond track and field, as a valuable member of the swimming, soccer, baseball and floor hockey teams.

His leisure time includes, photography, the Ladner Pioneer Library - Next Chapter Book Club and the Ladner

What to see in the Fall

Canada is wildlife central, and British Columbia arguably has the most diverse species on offer, from green herons and grizzly bears to orcas and trumpeter swans. Fall is a wonderful time to watch wildlife because it’s not too hot, the aspens have just started accenting the evergreen forest with yellow and gold, and the air takes on an inviting crispness. Just be sure to keep your distance from wildlife — 30 m (98 ft) minimum, and even further, at least 100 m (328 ft), from predators such as bears. Go wildlife watching early or at dusk when animals are the most active. Here are some of the top spots to see BC’s incredible critters.

GRIZZLIES on the Coast of the Great Bear Rainforest Autumn is peak grizzly season on the wild west coast, and fly-in Knight Inlet Lodge is a great place to see them. The Glendale Cove

area has one of the largest concentrations of grizzly bears in the province. Situated 80 km (50 mi) north of Campbell River, the conservation-minded lodge focuses on safe viewing in the bears’ natural environment. You might see some of the 50 grizzly and black bears feasting on salmon within a 10-km (6-mi) radius of the floating wilderness resort, which is specially designed for optimal animal observation. You can also go sea kayaking along the pristine rainforest coast, take a marine wildlife tour, and whale watch until mid-October. Pack a zoom lens!

see all five Pacific salmon species, too, on the 1,375-km (850-mi)-long waterway. If you’ve never seen the battered, crimson-hued fish fighting their way upstream, especially when they get to the shallow northern streams at the end, it’s a stirring sight. And of course, the spent carcasses attract hungry bears, eagles, and gulls by the thousands. If you want to learn more, visit one of the hatcheries near Vancouver: Chilliwack River Hatchery, Abbotsford’s Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery (which also has steelhead and cutthroat), or the Capilano Salmon Hatchery in North Vancouver.

SALMON in the Fraser River, near Vancouver The story is iconic: wild salmon begin the arduous journey from the ocean back to where they were born, to spawn at the main stem of the Fraser River each year from late September to early November. It’s one of the planet’s largest salmon runs. You can

The 300-lb (140 kg) bachelors taunt, kick, and then charge each other at 35 kph (22 mph), rising on their hind legs to bash each other’s 30-lb (14-kg) horns with incredible force.

The sound? Like a sledgehammer—so loud you can hear the crack a mile away. In early November, there’s a two-day Headbanger Festival with tours and seminars showcasing the annual event. After the show, soak in Canada’s largest natural mineral hot springs.

MOOSE in Prince George, Northern BC Moose? You’ll want to head to Prince George, home to the highest density of these hooved giants in North America. In fact, 70% of the province’s moose live in Northern BC. Grown

bulls with impressive sets of velvety antlers stand some 6.5-ft (2-m) tall and might weigh 1,100 lbs (500 kg). Late fall is rutting season when the usually solitary ungulates gather in groups of eight to 10 and lock horns. Listen for the cows’ loud, moaning call designed to lure a mate, and take care because moose can be aggressive at this time of year. Look for moose in clearings and valleys; they prefer open spaces with plenty of shrubs and brush to munch on and marshy areas surrounding lakes, and are easiest to find in the early morning. WARRINGTON, Mrs. Helen Mary, RN March 7, 1932 - August 23, 2017 FAULKNER, Marie Florence Rosaline (“Flo” or “Zouze”)

August 2, 1932 - September 5, 2017 Flo passed away peacefully from complications of COPD with her family at her side on September 5, 2017.

Born August 2, 1932 in the Acadian village of Surette’s Island, Nova Scotia, she was the eighth child of a family of nine; her parents were Rene and Flora (Muise) Moulaison. In 1962, she moved to Goose Bay, Labrador to work for a local airline. There she met and married Don Faulkner in 1963 and the two were together for 54 years. In 1969, she moved with her family to Tsawwassen where she lived the remainder of her days.

She was predeceased by her parents and five of her siblings. At her death, she leaves to celebrate her life: Don; daughter Kim Fujisawa (Dave Fujisawa); son Terry (Julie Moss); grandchildren Natalie and Nicole Fujisawa and Kehgan, Ethan and Alix Faulkner.

BURNS, Robert (Bob) August 14, 1942 - July 7, 2017 With great sadness we announce the sudden passing of retired Delta Police S/Sgt Robert (Bob) Burns on July 7, 2017. Bob and his wife Franca were traveling by motorcycle near their summer home at Green Lake, B.C. when they were struck by a distracted driver. Bob tragically succumbed to his injuries during air transport to Kamloops Hospital.

Bob’s long career dedicated to public service and leading others started in the military and evolved into many years of distinguished service as a police officer. He served with the Queen’s Own Rifles from 1959 to 1966, was stationed in West Germany with NATO Forces from 1960 to 1962, served in the motorcycle traffic section of the Calgary Police Service, joined the Delta Police Department in 1970 and retired with the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1999.

Bob was a founding member of the Delta Police Pipe Band. Always noted for his immaculate dress, deportment and military bearing Bob proudly served as Drum Major for the Edinburgh Tattoo, the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo and many other performances until his retirement in 2002.

She began a life of volunteer community service when she helped found the Terrington Co-operative grocery store in Goose Bay. In Tsawwassen, in the 1970s and 1980s she worked as a volunteer co-ordinator for local and provincial political parties.

She also volunteered for the Canadian Red Cross and the Arthritis Society. She was a director of Deltassist for many years and in the 1990s volunteered for Meals-on-Wheels.

She then volunteered for the Kinsmen Recreation Centre and continued until three years ago when her COPD prevented her from working.

Her family wish to thank the friendly staff of Delta Hospital who so ably supported Flo and the family in their time of need. Thanks go also to Dr. Stewart Noble who attended to Flo’s care for many years.

A Celebration of Flo’s Life will be held Saturday, September 30, 2017 between 2:00 and 5:00 pm at the Kinsmen Recreation Centre, 5430 10th Avenue, Tsawwassen.

Bob will be fondly remembered by all who knew him as a quiet commanding presence who took great pride in his family and in everything he did.

He was a loyal friend and above all else, he was a sincere, kind and loving husband, father and grandfather. He is greatly missed.

The NHS in England at the time provided few prospects for a young nurse and physician. Answering an advertisement for physicians in Canada, Michael, Helen and a then three-month old Richard arrived in a -30C Saskatchewan winter in 1957. After serving rural communities for three years, Helen and Michael moved west to Victoria, BC, where Michael started a medical practice. One of eight children herself, Helen was kept very busy raising eight of her own. Eventually settling in Vancouver, Helen decided to continue her career. Despite being away from the nursing profession for many years, she successfully passed her licensing exam by studying whenever she could, which was often on uncomfortable benches at her children’s early morning swim practices.

Helen enjoyed nursing at the Altamont Private Hospital in West Vancouver, and then became the nurse and office manager at Michael’s practice in North Vancouver where she finished her career. Her passion for health care lives on as three of her daughters also became nurses and one a physician.

Helen managed an extremely busy, but warm and loving, household over the years, where homemade bread was always just coming out of the oven. She taught her children that the first step in resolving many of their problems begins with putting the kettle on.

In their retirement Helen and Michael settled in Tsawwassen. They travelled often, with packed agendas in order to see as many places, friends and relatives as they could.

Helen’s ever present thoughtfulness and consideration for others was a true inspiration to all who knew her.

She will be missed enormously and never forgotten.

Friends are invited to a Memorial Service and reception to be held at Cammidge House, 498 Boundary Rd, Delta, BC on Sunday September 24th from 1-3pm.

Following her wishes, Helen will be buried at Hatley Gardens in Victoria, beside Michael. He will have a busy agenda planned for their upcoming adventures together. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Delta Hospital Foundation or to the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barb after a brave four year fight against breast cancer. Barb passed away Friday, September 8, 2017 at Delta Hospital with her family at her bedside holding her hands.

Special thanks to dear friends Gladys and Dee for their support and caring during Barb’s illness, Dr. Kordic and her friends at the Delta Hospital Auxiliary where Barb enjoyed her time volunteering.

Born in Kent, England, she spent her school years in Bournemouth and vividly recalled fighter planes in the skies over her school during the London Blitz.

Leaving school she pursued a career in nursing, pleased to be earning £10 per month while training at Westminster Hospital in London, graduating in 1954. After graduation, Helen worked at the Canadian Red Cross Memorial Hospital in Taplow, England. There she met a newly qualified physician, Michael Warrington.

They were happily married for 59 years.

Barb is survived by her loving husband Steve, brother Wayne (Linda), brother-in-law Tony (Doreen), many cousins, nieces and nephews and her loving cat Oskie.
