Delta still has pot questions City has several concerns, including using prime farmland to grow marijuana SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta wants answers sooner rather than later when it comes to legalized recreational marijuana. “The federal government said this is going to happen, so we have said, ‘All right, these are the concerns that we have, whether it’s using up our good ALR land, whether it’s children 12 years old being allowed to possess but not smoke, all of these things.’ We want to know how the police department can be handling all this, so we’ve been working very diligently,” Mayor Lois Jackson told the Optimist this week. Having spoken to provincial and federal officials to convey a variety of concerns about legalizing pot and the impacts it will have on cities, Jackson noted Delta has been busy compiling information and seeking answers to specific questions. The provincial government’s window for public engagement ends Nov. 1. A Delta staff report on what could be the city’s submission will be discussed at Delta council’s meeting next Monday. Richmond council this week voted unanimously to oppose marijuana legalization and send a letter to the provincial and federal governments expressing its concerns and requesting “proper” regulations. In the letter, the city is asking for the right to

At least one Delta greenhouse is looking to get into marijuana production. regulate cannabis at the municipal level. While legalization will have complex and widereaching impacts, one of the biggest and most visible impacts for Delta is the potential conversion of prime agricultural land into large-scale marijuana growing operations, something Delta is hoping to have a say in preventing. The huge Village Farms greenhouse in East Ladner announced this summer it had entered into a joint venture with Emerald Health Therapeutics, a B.C.-based licenced producer of medical cannabis, for the purpose of producing, cultivating and distributing wholesale cannabis

and cannabis extracts for medical purposes. Also, if permitted by law, the operation, which would be called Pure Sunfarms, plans to grow pot for “nontherapeutic” purposes. It would cover an initial 1.1 million square feet of greenhouse space. Last week, Emerald Health announced it had formally submitted licence applications to Health Canada for approval for two new growing sites, the Village Farms complex and a smaller facility in Richmond. Emerald says it’s preparing for the large-scale production of cannabis in anticipation of legalization of the adultuse cannabis market on

July 1, 2018. “Emerald and Village Farms are retrofitting this greenhouse from tomato growing into a configuration optimized for largescale cannabis cultivation,” the company stated in a news release. “With a key goal of the partnership to be a large, very low-cost cannabis producer, Pure Sunfarms also optioned from Village Farms an additional 3.7 million square feet of existing highly-efficient greenhouse space in the same Delta complex.” Jackson noted Delta is receiving several inquiries a week from those interested in growing marijuana on farmland.

“Speaking with (Public Safety and Solicitor General) Minister (Mike) Farnworth at UBCM a couple of times, we asked, ‘Can Delta say we don’t want to use our great farmland for growing of marijuana?’ “We can put it in, for instance, some of the big industrial buildings that we have at Tilbury and Annacis. There are people up country that have land in the ALR and they want to be able to use their land for this, so we asked can we have maybe different rules for Delta than they do for Nelson, for example. So he’s looking at that and we don’t know what the outcome will be.”

Trains might soon be able to silence their whistles SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta residents living in proximity to train tracks might finally be getting some relief from constant whistles. Delta council recently endorsed a staff recommendation to fund up to five per cent of the total construction cost of rail crossing improvements required in order to implement train whistle cessation within two years. The whistle cessation initiative would include the installation of automated crossing gates,

warning lights and bells at existing crossings at 72nd, 88th, 96th, 104th and 112th streets. Delta’s contributions is estimated at $125,000 but the final amount would be subject to further technical work. The other funding partners would be Transport Canada, B.C. Rail and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. “They put the railway line basically through Delta farmland and there’s a lot of farm families whose houses, to this day, are only 30 or 40 metres from the railway tracks,” said Coun. Ian Paton.

“Because there’s no automatic arms to go down to stop the traffic, the trains must blow their whistles, so you can imagine, since 1969 or 1970 when the tracks went in, there’s a lot of farm families that have had to listen to 15 trains a day blowing their whistles.” Paton said it would certainly be good news if stakeholders can come up with a program that will enable trains not to have to blow their whistles every time they go across a rural road and at-grade crossing. According to the port, in

2010, the Roberts Bank rail corridor carried approximately six container trains per day (three into Deltaport and three out). Additionally, an average of 10 coal trains (five in and five out) serviced the Westshore Terminals coal port daily. By the time the Deltaport container terminal reaches its full capacity, rail container traffic is expected to increase to an average of eight trains per day (four in and four out). The whistle cessation program is part of an overall initiative to improve the efficiency, capacity

and safety by upgrading at-grade crossings to meet federal regulations that will allow for the elimination of whistle noise, as well as to apply train detection and information technology at major crossings to provide motorists with alternate routing advisories. The whistle cessation component of the project would undertake recommended signing, pavement marking, fencing, lighting, vegetation clearing and other enhancements as needed to meet Transport Canada grade crossing regulations.

Project to proceed despite objections

Neighbours express concerns about Trunk Road townhouse proposal at public hearing IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Despite objections from a number of area residents, Delta council has approved a multi-family rental housing complex proposed for the corner of Ladner Trunk Road and 54A Street. The project will include 20 townhouses and four garden apartments. Following a public hearing Tuesday night, council voted 5-1 in favour of conditional approval, with only Mayor Lois Jackson voting against the application. At the hearing,

Adlington Court residents presented a 45-signature petition as well as several verbal presentations against the project’s size, the fact numerous trees, which provide shade, security and privacy, will be removed as well as issues with parking and traffic congestion. “There is a need for more rental housing, not just in South Delta, but throughout the entire Lower Mainland. My argument is not against rental housing,” said resident Larry Causer. “Property owners should be able to make changes to their property, but when the

property owner proposes changes that far exceed anything reasonable and will have a negative impact on neighbours both in lifestyle and financially, it is a problem that we count on our elected officials to protect us.” Causer said a better idea would be to adjust the size of the project to one or two buildings with 12 or 14 units placed in the centre of the property, thus saving trees, green space and allowing for more space between the new development and existing townhomes. “There has to be a way to make this project work

so it is a winwin,” he added. “As it stands, the only winner in this project is the developer. We are Delta taxpayers and we are asking Jeannie you to help us Kanakos come out as winners too.” Deputy director of planning Marcy Sangret said the proposed density and building height are consistent with what is called for in the Official Community Plan and the Ladner Area Plan. “The height of the proposed townhomes is 41

feet, which is pretty typical of a threestorey townhome,” said Sangret. “They have produced a shadow study and produced a landscape plan that would look to replace many of the trees on site recognizing that a lot of the large trees would have to be removed.” Councillors said they were sympathetic to residents’ concerns and urged the developers, who were in attendance, to work with neighbours to try and address those concerns. “I appreciate the impacts on the neighbourhood, especially the folks right next door. It will be a change as it was a change when their townhouse unit was proposed in Ladner,” said Coun. Jeannie Kanakos. “It’s a challenge, it’s a balance. I’m hoping the proponents heard the issues around

traffic and trees and will work with the residents during the construction period and in the future.” Coun. Sylvia Bishop said there is a crying need for different types of housing in the rental market and this development addresses that. In voting against the project, Jackson said she had real concerns about the size, the removal of so many trees and the parking issues. “I applaud the applicants coming forward with a project that includes rental stock,” said Jackson. “But it occurs to me that it shouldn’t make any difference. Rental stock should not be less attractive, any less valuable or different than market housing. I’m going to support the neighbours. It is their neighbourhood. Yes, we need market rental housing, but we have to also look at the people that it impacts.”

Mixed-use building in village receives council approval IAN JACQUES

The past will meet the future when construction begins on a two-and-ahalf storey mixed-use redevelopment in Ladner Village. Following a public hearing Tuesday night, civic politicians approved a development application at 4868 and 4872 Delta St. An existing heritage building, which is home to a barber shop, will be torn down to make way for the mixed-use building. The only person to speak at the hearing was Wesley Wollin from Dandyk + Wollin Architects Inc. who outlined the history of the project, what it will look like and the work that has gone in to maintain the area’s heritage, while keeping with a modern design. “What is important to me as an architect is that we are able to bring recognition and memories forward into current energy, seismic and energy codes,” Wollin said. “Ladner Village is a significant part of this community’s identity and needs to be maintained

and strengthened.” Mayor Lois Jackson said she was impressed the project respects, maintains and strengthens Ladner Village and its character, adding the development is “exactly what we have been looking for.” Ladner Trunk project gets green light A four-unit townhouse complex along Ladner Trunk Road has been given the go-ahead by Delta council. Also included in the project is the restoration and relocation of a singlefamily heritage dwelling known as the Draney House. The development will be located at the corner of 54A Street. Councillors gave approval for the project following a public hearing Tuesday night. The only person to speak at the hearing was the applicant, Brian Hart, who outlined the design of the development and timeline for the project. Hart estimates it would take four to six months for the restoration of the Draney House, which would be followed by construction of the townhouses.

All hands on deck to keep Halloween safe Extra police resources to be deployed while Halloween Patrol keeps eyes on civic facilities IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Police officers, firefighters and city officials are stepping up their efforts to ensure everyone has a safe and happy Halloween. This weekend, when it is anticipated numerous Halloween celebrations will take place, there will be additional officers on the streets and resources will also be stepped up on Halloween night, according to Delta police public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks. The City of Delta will be keeping the lights on at parks and fields overnight tomorrow and on Halloween night, while Delta’s Halloween Patrol will also once again provide extra eyes and ears on Halloween night to ensure civic facilities aren’t damaged. Both the police and fire departments remind

residents that no one may possess fireworks unless over 18 years old and a holder of a valid permit. The permit would have to be obtained from the Delta Fire Department at a cost of $200 and applied for at least 10 days prior to any event. Anyone found in possession of fireworks without a permit could face a fine of $175 for possession of fireworks or a fine of $225 for anyone selling or trading fireworks. “Delta police anticipate that it will be a busier than usual upcoming Tuesday night and are asking everyone to celebrate in a responsible manner so that it is a spooktacularly safe night for all of us,” said Brooks. DPD officers will give out candy to young trickor-treaters on Halloween night as a part of a community policing initiative. “Each of the Save-on-

Foods locations in Delta partnered with our (Delta) Police Foundation donating a generous amount of candy for Delta officers to give out to youngsters in our community on Halloween,” said Chief Neil Dubord. “This is a great community policing initiative and will allow us to interact with kids in a fun way while reinforcing the fact that police officers are approachable as community helpers who work to keep them and all of our citizens safe.”

As a father and a dentist, Dr. Raj Dhiman knows the health impacts of Halloween.

Ladner dentist Dr. Raj Dhiman is once again promoting a healthier Halloween with his Cash for Candy program. Dhiman will pay $2 for every pound of Halloween candy a child exchanges at Riverside Dental in Ladner from Nov. 1 to 8 and a matching donation will then be made to the Delta Hospital Foundation. Riverside Dental has raised a total of $7,500 from this event through the past several years.

The Cash for Candy program encourages children to moderate their sugar intake and helps to raise awareness of both oral and general health. Halloween candy can be exchanged during office hours (Nov. 1, 7 and 8 until 7 p.m., Nov. 2 and 6 until 4:30 p.m.). Children can weigh their candy on a large scale, donated by Ladner Safeway, to see exactly how much they are contributing to Delta Hospital.

Theft from vehicles up 18 per cent over 2016 IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Crime stats presented at the recent Delta police board meeting show theft from vehicles is up 18 per cent year over year. “Property offences, specifically theft from vehicles, is particularly alarming,” said deputy Chief Norm Lipinski. “In talking with our colleagues in the Lower Mainland, everyone is experiencing an uptick in property offences due to many anecdotal reasons, including demographics, a more transient population, or more of a population as well.” The police department posted a reminder to its Facebook page this week encouraging the public to leave vehicles empty, especially during these darker months. Other highlights of the crime stats included roadside suspensions from both alcohol and drug

violations down by 48 and 35 per cent, respectively, drug possession offences down by 27 per cent and cybercrime down by 29 per cent. Overall, total calls for service is up five per cent from this time last year. Chief Neil Dubord and corporate planning and communications manager Melissa Granum provided a brief report to the board on the department’s social media program and how Facebook, Twitter and Instagram continue to be key tools to engage with the public. “Twitter is more for emerging issues such as traffic incidents, downed wires or other real-time events, while Facebook is more comprehensive and sharing more stories and photos,” said Granum. The DPD has also recently created an Instagram account, which is becoming increasingly popular.

Replica guns cause concern for police For everyone’s safety, chief is urging parents not to permit air guns to be part of their children’s Halloween costumes

DPD Strong

CHIEF NEIL DUBORD

In an instant, could you tell which of the guns pictured on this page is real or fake? Without closer examination, neither can we, and that’s a problem. With the growing popularity of airsoft and CO2 pistols and rifles, more and more are making their way into the hands of youth and young adults. The Delta Police Department receives calls every month about youth behaving recklessly while in possession of realistic looking airsoft guns, BB guns and paintball

guns. This includes incidents where students have brought these devices to school, have posed with them on various forms of social media or, in some cases, have committed criminal offences with them. At its most severe, police responded to a high school where we had received information that a student allegedly had a gun in their possession. Fortunately, the police and school administration were quickly able to determine it was not a real gun. In another instance, a DPD school liaison officer seized an Uzi replica airsoft gun. It was so realistic looking it needed to be more closely examined to confirm it was not an actual firearm. A weapons call to a school is one of the most serious calls a police department will ever receive. I can’t be clear enough when I say the prevalence of these types of air guns in our community is a

growing problem because they present a significant public safety and officer safety risk. Well intentioned adults who purchase one need to understand how important it

ensuring your children can be seen and are properly supervised as they go out trick-or-treating. We also remind drivers to be very careful and keep an eye out for excited little

I can’t be clear enough when I say the prevalence of these types of air guns in our community is a growing problem because they present a significant public safety and officer safety risk. is to securely store them and supervise their use, particularly if youth have access to them. This is not only because of the injury potential, but also because when police respond to a weapons call, and we cannot differentiate between a real firearm and an air gun, someone could get seriously hurt or killed. Our standard Halloween safety messaging typically includes reminders about

ones who may not be paying attention. All of these reminders still apply, but this year I will add to the message: For the safety of our youth, I am asking parents whose children have access to air guns (or otherwise), to please make sure they are not taking them out. Air guns should never be used for a Halloween costume. They are not toys and should never be treated as such.

t’s a pretty good bet that if Eastern European countries or institutional facilities are frequently used as reference points, the feedback for a development proposal isn’t going terribly well. That’s the case for the Century Group’s Block A, a six-storey mixed-use building that’s intended to be the first phase of a wholesale redevelopment of the aging Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall. The proposal was the subject of an open house last week and it made an impression on local residents for all the wrong reasons. It’s understandable the design of the building has garnered the lion’s share of attention thus far, but I wonder whether it’s obscuring other issues in the mall redevelopment that could prove to be far greater sticking points than whether a particular building resembles a correctional facility. I suspect Century will use the input it’s received to come back with a design that’s more pleasing to the eye and results in fewer Soviet Union comparisons, however, that doesn’t mean the project will be out of the woods. Overshadowed by the look are issues just waiting to take centre stage, including the height of the building, its location right next to 56th Street and, when a master plan is unveiled, the overall number of housing units for the property. Throw in underground parking and the possibility of a high-rise and you’ve got enough hot button issues to keep the discussion going in always-loquacious Tsawwassen for the foreseeable future. If there’s a silver lining for Century it’s that there’s a general consensus out there that the mall, which has served Tsawwassen well for almost half a century, is definitely in need of an overhaul. Unlike the Southlands where a segment of the population didn’t want anything to happen, it’s almost unanimous that something must be done to bring 1960s suburbia into the 21st century, although there’s bound to be less agreement on what that something should be. The idea of a “High Street” will likely have appeal, but old chestnuts like building heights and newer concerns surrounding a tunnel-like effect on the main thoroughfare could potentially drag this one out for years. It could be so long we might even forget that ugly building that started it all.

s the Roman Empire expanded, being able to keep the vast numbers of citizens under control was becoming a problem, so in 140 B.C. Roman politicians said, “Give them bread and give them circuses.” Coliseums were built throughout the empire and bread was given away at the spectacles, so everyone was fed and occupied. I believe that governments have been using this approach to keep the masses under control ever since the Romans. When I was a young boy we lived north of Toronto and most of our TV programs came from Buffalo, New York. It was the time of the Cold War and we watched civil defence films where “experts” told school children to get under their desks when they heard missile warning sirens and encouraged our parents to build backyard bomb shelters. Nothing happened. In the 1960s more “experts” predicted the world was going to experience a period of cooling. Nothing happened. That was followed by “expert” predictions that the world was going to run out of oil. People lined up at gas stations to fill up their cars and when the premier of Alberta, Peter Lougheed, was asked if Alberta would share its oil with the rest of Canada as the world cooled, he said, “Let those

Eastern bastards freeze in the dark.” Nothing happened. When the earth didn’t cool and we found oceans of oil then some “experts” told us the ozone layer around the earth was failing and in the near future we would have to wear hazmat suits to the beach. Nothing happened. As we proceeded through the 1990s computerization was coming into every aspect of our lives and some “experts” told everyone that when the year 2000 arrived computers would not be able to deal with two zeros as a date. They predicted calamity and chaos all over the world unless governments paid hundreds of millions of dollars to prevent it. At midnight on Dec. 31, 1999 everyone was on their porch waiting to see planes fall from the sky. Nothing happened. After that prediction didn’t happen more “experts” gave

us global warming, which later became climate change that blames every extreme natural event on the burning of oil. I’m not suggesting this is a contrived situation where politicians convene to create issues with potentially high impact on the populace, but I do think it occurs too often with very little actually resulting from the issue to call it a coincidence. When these things go public, the media goes into a flap to report and photograph every related issue around the world. Whether it’s true or not it doesn’t matter because spectacle and turmoil sells newspapers. Maybe I’ve heard “the sky is falling” too many times, so now I just don’t listen anymore. Have you noticed since everyone carries a cell phone capable of taking photos that we don’t have any more sightings of UFOs, Sasquatch or Ogopogo? With the advantage of hindsight, I see most of these events as issues to provide serious distractions for the people while the government proceeds with bad decisions and compounding public debt. I don’t enjoy the circus anymore. Greg Hoover is a project manager in industrial and commercial construction who has lived with Christina in Tsawwassen for 25 years.

City much more than bottom line

Editor: Re. Name, not definition, Murphy’s Law, Oct. 18 Thank you to Ted Murphy for his attention to the name change from “corporation” to “city,” and challenging us to pause and reflect on how we define ourselves as a community. What may seem a trivial matter to some is of great importance for our future, because what we name something informs the way we see it and influences the meaning it holds for us. Although the moniker “corporation” doesn’t conjure the “small town feeling” South Delta currently enjoys, “city” will require some radical re-imagining

in order to keep a clear vision of what we all love about our home. It might help to pay attention to the Latin root of city: civitas, from civis, citizen. As citizens of South Delta, along with all the human-built amenities, we enjoy what our landscape contributes to our lives. Nature writer Oliver Rackham has written there are four ways a landscape can be lost: through “the loss of beauty, the loss of freedom, the loss of wildlife and vegetation, and the loss of meaning.” One meaning “city” might hold for us, then, so that our landscape is not lost, is “a more-thanhuman community.” The cries of snow

geese that fill the air in the fall, like the chorus of frogs in the spring, are predominant voices that might draw attention to all the other, too easily overlooked nonhuman creatures inhabiting this place as “citizens,” in the broad sense of “inhabitants.” Like the Who’s in Dr. Seuss’s beloved Horton Hears a Who, they are calling: “We are here! We are here!” We and our elected officials need to be mindful, as we look to the future, that economics and ecology share the same root: oikos, meaning “home.” This community is a living entity, and to remain static would be to stagnate and die. But decisions

about development will only be healthy if our city economics entail more than fiscal matters. Every responsible decision, we teach our kids, involves weighing pros and cons, benefits and consequences. When it comes to healthy civitas, these are more than financial; community values should never be reduced to a “bottom line.” As citizens, I hope we will be motivated more than ever to be informed and, in the face of growing pressures, to encourage our elected officials to imagine and sustain our city — our civitas — as a beloved, more-thanhuman community. Truckers must earn respect of fellow drivers

Editor: Re: Be Truck Aware campaign underway, Oct. 20 The many different stakeholder groups are asking the public to be more Truck Aware these days. I applaud the enforcement of the traffic rules, but respect is earned, and if truck drivers want respect, they need to follow the rules too. Many commercial vehicles regularly ignore the rules. Commercial trucks stay to the right lane? Not so much, although the Ministry of Transportation thinks two little signs will keep them to the correct lane leading up to the George Massey Tunnel.

Concrete worth the cost

Editor: This is a note to my Fairy God Mayor who rules the City of Delta. I know she wants the best for me and others who live in Tsawwassen so I would beg her to wave here magic gavel and turn the proposed Century Group 56th Street six-storey pumpkin into an icon of architectural excellence befitting the main street of Tsawwassen. When this magic spell

is cast and with the proper incantations, Sean Hodgins would immediately envision the charm of a multi-use concrete structure offering privacy that comes from soundproofed floors, walls, ceilings and triple glazed windows. When the spell is over the cost will give Century accountants nightmares but anything worth having is worth paying for. Bohdan Zabolotniuk

Sophie Sophie is an adorable eleven month old female Pointer mix who is around 35lbs. Being a puppy, she still has that puppy personality and moxie. We would definitely say she is high energy and would need an active family that goes out daily for mental and physical stimulation. Sophie is playfully mouthy, as puppies usually are, but because of this combined with her jumping up when excited, we feel a home with small, rambunctious children would not be ideal for her. She can be shy when she first meets you, and definitely has a preference of women over men, but it doesn’t take long for her to warm up and then she is your BFF! She can be shy around new dogs, especially when larger than she, and she is great with small dogs. She is not a huge fan of her crate, but has been making progress. She also has a bit of separation anxiety and needs some time to get adjusted to a new home and routine before being left along for long periods as she can be vocal. Sophie is lovely on leash and completely housebroken. As with all our dogs, she is spayed and up to date on all shots and vaccines and microchipped. If you would like to meet beautiful Sophie, please find our foster information and applications on our website at pbandchi.com

I was wowed again by technology last week (not an infrequent experience). I discovered that Google Translate could use the camera in my phone to translate printed material. I held up a newspaper, and the headlines were translated into Portuguese. For someone who cut his computing teeth on an Apple II — Who needs more than 64K of memory and a floppy drive? — it was amazing. It never entered my mind that those features could have developed on their own. As amazing as this technology is, the intelligence it took to conceive that feature, and then code it for something as small as our phones, is even more amazing.

We take our brains for granted. Your brain has 86 billion nerve cells (neurons) and billions of nerve fibers. They are connected by trillions of synapses. Each neuron can transmit 1,000 impulses per second as well as connect with

tens of thousands of other neurons. Oh, and you can’t really concentrate on two things at once, so turn the TV off and reread this… Why, if we recognize purpose and intelligence behind technological advances, do we assume the brains behind it all could have just naturally evolved without that same purpose and intelligence? Frankly, that takes more faith than I’m capable of. What the Psalmist wrote makes much more sense to me: “Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous — how well I know it.” (Psalm 139:14, NLT) You can reach Mike at mike@ladnerbaptist.ca.

Firefighters’ annual Harvest Fest raises almost $31,000 for Reach

The Delta Firefighters Charitable Foundation’s recent Harvest Festival raised almost $31,000 for the Reach Child and Youth Development Society. The money will go to the society’s Building for Children Together campaign that is constructing a community-based child development centre in the heart of Ladner. John Burr, Kristy Storey, Dave Mason and Jarrod Burr presented a cheque for $30,911 from the Delta Firefighters Charitable Foundation outside the new Lois E. Jackson Kinsmen Centre for Children currently under construction. “We’re proud and honoured to support Reach Society and we’re happy to be part of the Reach family,” said Burr, the foundation’s president. Reach executive director Renie D’Aquila applauded the Delta firefighters for all their hard work on the Harvest Festival that raised $106,911 to benefit Reach,

Band to pay tribute with its Concert of Remembrance

Fresh off a two-week tour in Hungary, the Delta Music Makers will be back performing at their Concert of Remembrance next weekend in Tsawwassen. The annual concert is set for Sunday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. at KinVillage. “What a show we are preparing,” says band leader Curt Jantzen. “Nov. 5 is shaping up to be fabulous.” The Concert of Remembrance will honour members of the Canadian armed forces and first responders. It will also be an opportunity to reminisce about the war years and celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. The audience will be treated to a variety of

music, including concert marches, patriotic themes, Canadian folk music and featured performers. The format will include full band arrangements, instrumental soloists, a trumpet trio, vocal performers and more. Singers Margaret Behenna and Alan Dodds will offer their talents as well as lead the audience in a singalong of Second World War songs. Accompanying the music will be a visual display on a large screen, giving further intensity to the music and the memories. The show will also include war reminiscences from band member Brian Ellis, a feature by bagpiper Jamie Thomson and a formal honour guard pro-

Rod and the Mods to bring Stewart tribute to Genesis DAVE WILLIS

Brent Stewart will bring his Rod and the Mods Rod Stewart tribute act to Ladner tomorrow night. “It’s such infectious music,” says Stewart, who recently returned from a three-week stint performing at the Memories Theatre in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. “It’s music that touches a lot of generations, it’s not just a certain age group.” Back when he was a “young buck” playing in bands the Vancouverbased performer says he would get comments about looking and sounding like the famous singer and was eventually talked into doing a tribute show. He came away from the experience thinking it was fun. Stewart notes the legendary British rock artist’s hits will be covered off at the show as well as other not as obvious tunes. “We like to mix it up,” he says.

Delta Pacers Markus Niebuhr battles at the net during his team’s win over Yale on Monday night to close out Fraser Valley League play.

Pacers back in familiar territory

Senior boys volleyball team ranked sixth in province with playoffs looming MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Delta Pacers hope to thrive in a somewhat different role with the senior boys volleyball playoffs on the horizon. A year ago, the Ladner school headed into the post-season with high expectations as one of the top four ranked teams in the province, only to stumble at the Fraser Valley Championships and never recover. They went on to place 10th at the provincials after being dealt a tough draw due to their poor showing. Now, the Pacers have reverted back to a role they are much more familiar with. “I think we are bit of a dark horse now but when we play our game we will be a tough team to beat for sure,” said head coach Carson Kauenhowen. “I would say it’s a bit of a rebuild this season. We have two really strong Grade 11s in Jager Sherman and Gavin Payne. They are definitely the future of Delta volleyball. At the same time, we also have couple of solid Grade 12s in Markus Niebuhr and Evan Hixt. “Markus is a great captain for us and a great leader on the floor while Evan has a lot of good experience playing with high level players at the Seaside Volleyball Club. We are steadily working our way up, I think and I’m excited for the next month.”

Backing up Kauenhowen’s hopes was an impressive showing at the Thompson Rivers University Tournament in Kamloops last weekend — a result that vaulted his team from 13th to sixth in the latest provincial “AAA” rankings released on Tuesday. This group has also enjoyed success before — finishing sixth at the provincial junior invitational championships two years ago. Making that feat more impressive was that tournament was not tiered and featured nothing but the best Grade 9-10 teams in B.C. The Pacers wrapped up Fraser Valley AAA South play Monday night with a win over Yale to finish in third place with a 5-2 record. Their league is easily the toughest in the province. It also includes No. 2 Earl Marriott, No. 4 Seaquam, No. 12 Semihamoo and honourable mention Elgin Park. Delta managed a three-game sweep of Seaquam back in September and also defeated Elgin Park. The losses were to Earl Marriott (3-0) and Semiahmoo (3-1). The latter is the defending provincial champion and still has the reigning MVP in its line-up — UBC commit Michael Dowhaniuk. “In terms of all-around, EMS is the team to beat. Seaquam always comes to play at the end of year and Semiahmoo has Mike,” continued Kauenhowen. “(No. 15) Centennial is a strong

team in the other league. I will predict right now the B.C. champion will come from the Fraser Valley (again). “We are still working out some kinks. We are bringing in different guys in different positions in hopes of adding some depth so we can have more options. I think we are definitely deeper than one or two players. I think three or four can come off bench and contribute. “Any time going away as a young volleyball team it is invaluable for team growth and being able to spend time with your teammates. I think the boys had pretty good time over the weekend.” The Pacers will once again be co-hosting the 12-team Fraser Valley Championships — Nov. 14-17. The final will take place in Ladner. DSS will be trying to advance to provincials for the 20th time in the past 22 years. At the net… The South Delta Sun Devils senior girls team will finally be back at home again next Wednesday when it closes out its Fraser Valley West Tier One schedule by taking on No. 5 ranked Earl Marriott at 7:30 p.m. The Devils own a 4-1 record after a four set win over No. 4 Semiahmoo on Monday night. The preliminary match at SDSS sees the No. 3 Seaquam Seahawks taking on Semiahmoo at 6 p.m.

Delta Footmen hosted Vancouver in Pacific Coast Field Lacrosse U11 action.

Hawks add to PJHL’s best record After feasting on sub .500 teams for the past two weeks, the Delta Ice Hawks will be looking to extend their cushion atop the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s Tom Shaw Conference then when they visit the Grandview Steelers on Sunday night. The Hawks continued their best start in franchise history with a 5-3 home ice win over the Mission City Outlaws on Tuesday night. They now sit at 13-1-0-0 on the season — five points better than North Vancouver (9-2-0-3). The Steelers sit in fourth place in the Shaw Conference with a 8-6-0-1 record. After a weekend stint with the B.C. Hockey League’s Cowichan Valley Capitals, Jonathan Stein returned to

the Delta line-up to score twice against Mission. The 18-year-old speedster now leads the team in scoring with 22 points in 13 games, including 12 goals. Blake Bonnar, Gary Dhaliwal and Teddy Prior had the other Hawk goals. Rookie net minder Jordy Engleson improved to 6-0-0 on the season as his team outshot Mission 39-20. Last Saturday in Port Moody, Delta blanked the Panthers 2-0 on goals by Daniel Rubin and Dhaliwal. Jordan Naylor had to make just 13 saves for his second shutout of the season. The Hawks are back at home on Halloween night when they host Surrey Knights at 7:35 p.m.

Katarina Vaupotic (nee Katarina Bauman) passed away peacefully at Royal Columbian Hospital on the morning of October 17, 2017 at the age of 86. Katarina, the youngest of 10 children, was born in Ptuj Slovenia. In her first 25 years, she experienced World War II and the advancement of communism in Eastern Europe. She left Europe for Canada in 1956 to join Franc Vaupotic, the love of her life. She was not only his wife but his business partner in their farming businesses in Delta and Richmond. They had three sons Frank (deceased) Peter (Marnie) Joe (Elana) and a daughter Lydia (Denis). She always referred to Canada as the land of milk and honey where there is an abundance of food, freedom of speech and movement. Katarina was a strong, hardworking and practical woman. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and her dogs. She also enjoyed tending to her vegetable garden and her rose bushes. She will be greatly missed by her three children, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Prayers will be offered on Thursday, October 26th from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and a Funeral Service on Friday, October 27th, 2017 at 11:00 am, both at Sacred Heart Parish, 3900 Arthur Drive. There will be a Burial at Boundary Bay Cemetery following the service. A Reception will take place at Katarina’s home following the burial. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946.6040
