Enviro-Smart Organics and its new owners Green for Life Environmental (GFL), were on the hot seat Wednesday as angry residents vented their frustrations with the constant odours that are coming from the facility. The public meeting, attended by more than 200 people at the Delta Town and Country Inn, was part of Enviro-Smart’s air quality permit application that Metro Vancouver urged the company to apply for in the summer following an uptick in resident complaints. Right off the bat, company officials were on the defensive as they tried to explain the cause of the odours and how they were going to rectify them. “I want to apologize for the odours that in fact our facilities have generated and the inconvenience that has caused any of you as far as those odours are concerned,” said Brian King, director of operations for composting operations at GFL. “We treat these things very seriously as far as GFL is concerned. We have and we are going to take even more aggres-
sive steps to address as far as the odours are concerned. “We hope that our systems will attract no odours. I cannot guarantee that, but I can guarantee that we will taking very aggressive steps to addressing all the odour complaints that you have.” King said GFL is a Torontobased company, Canadian owned, who acquired EnviroSmart in 2016. He said they have invested significantly in their Delta operation and would continue to do so. King said Enviro-Smart accepts food waste, yard waste, soiled paper, packaged organic waste, clean wood and agriculture organics, while they do not accept hazardous waste, dead animals, treated wood, biosolids, fish waste, human waste and manure-feces. District manager Daryl Goodwin explained the process of how the material is accepted and handled and invited the public to come and see the facility first-hand. He also spoke about many of the changes that have been made at the facility since GFL took over ownership including equipment upgrades, building an enclosed tent that was completed in October
where all the material is brought and sorted, and installing tarps on the finished compost product. Ray Robb from Metro Vancouver explained the air permit application process, while two representatives from Enviro Chem Services Ltd. talked about composting emissions and the computer modeling that will take place to determine what emission levels will be acceptable. Following the presentations, the floor was opened up to questions and comments. Residents spoked passionately about how the facility has negatively impacted their lives. “It’s not getting better – it’s getting worse. This summer guys it was every freaking day,” said one resident. “I drive up to your facility and I can trace the smell all the way back to my house. When will it get better?” Others suggested GFL should shut down the facility until all upgrades were completed. “Our goal is to make sure there are no more odours. It’s not our intent to put the blame on anyone else,” said King. Goodwin added that all of the concerns expressed were valid.
“I’m committed to you that I will be getting rid of more commercial food waste in the near future and replace it will more curbside green waste which is more acceptable to our facility,” he said. Later in the meeting several residents urged the company to look at enclosing the entire facility. King said he could not commit to that. “I don’t control the whole company. What I can do is that we will be proposing this as a solution for Delta,” King said. Robert Skinner, who recently organized the Ladner Anti Four Odour Group, said he appreciated the comments from the company as sincere and that efforts had been made, but it isn’t working. “There is so much pent up frustration and anger and disappointment in this community for Enviro-Smart, for Metro Vancouver, for Delta because 15 years in we have not seen any improvement from 2003 to now,” Skinner said. “My family suffers dramatically from this. We are renewed in our efforts to make sure that you understand that we are just not going to have it.”

Libraries need to maintain core function Most say facilities shouldn’t lose sight of being repositories of books, other printed materials SANDOR GYARMATI

Delta’s libraries shouldn’t lose sight that they’re repositories of books and other printed materials. That’s what most residents had to say about the city’s three libraries as a new library plan is being formulated. Delta council recently discussed the results of the feedback from public consultation on its draft library plan, which received approval earlier this summer. Public meetings were held at each of the three libraries last month and an online survey was conducted, while copies of the library plan were sent directly to about 20 stakeholder groups. Just over 100 online survey responses were completed, while the majority of the approximately 50 people who showed up at the open houses attended the Tsawwassen session. A report to council notes the vast majority of comments were complimentary about Delta’s libraries and staff.

Delta council recently discussed the results of the feedback from a public consultation on its draft library plan. “While most respondents acknowledged the growing importance of computer technology in libraries, many also stressed the need to maintain the core function of libraries as repositories of books and other printed
materials,” the report notes. “There were some comments about the increasing number of empty shelves in the libraries, long waits for new titles, and easier access to materials through non-FVRL libraries in Richmond and Surrey.” The report also found a “key ask” by many of the respondents was for more fiction and non-fiction
books that relate to a wide audience, from children to seniors, and recognize the more diverse population and interests of new immigrants. Another common request was for more broad books for very young children. Some of the requests in the area of programming included more programs for children, youth and seniors, and a wider range of topics, particularly com-
puter technology support. The other suggestions ranged from the libraries having more computers, scanning, printing and digital equipment to longer hours on weekends, while seating, lighting and slow computers were areas suggested for improvement. The report notes many respondents commented on the importance of their local library as a com-
munity hub, a place for group meetings, discussions and shared interests/ hobbies. It means libraries require flexible spaces to accommodate individuals who need quiet as well as group activities. “There were many comments about the need to segregate noisy activities and children’s programs from quiet study areas. Many people commented that the Tsawwassen Library, in particular, needs a separate multipurpose room.” The report adds the results will be incorporated as much as possible into the library plan and brought back to council early next year. Coun. Heather King, Delta’s representative on the Fraser Valley Regional Library board, described the open houses as “OK for a first attempt” and that there were many good suggestions for the immediate and long-term. CAO George Harvie said the plan has a considerable amount of requests regarding maintenance items that need to be discussed at a business planning workshop. Last fall council begrudgingly approved a hike of three per cent for Delta’s share of the FVRL budget.

2.86 percent increase to the Fraser Valley Regional Library for its 2018 budget. The option, which was approved at Monday’s council meeting, would see an additional cost for Delta of $102,776 for a total budget of $3,701,945 and an average increase for the FVRL of 2.82 per cent. Two other options were also on the table, one that would see a 2.53 per cent increase and the other a 1.77 per cent increase. Coun. Heather King, who is council’s liaison on the library board, said it is going to be interesting when they come forward later in the month
to discuss the budget and whether Delta will be successful in getting the chosen funding option. “Most of the times the other boards that are involved in the Fraser Valley Regional Library really do struggle to put the dollars and cents together just to get the bare minimum,” King said. “We took a different approach. We just finished a survey where we asked people what they felt and what they wanted out of their library. People want to ensure there are printed materials. There are well resourced libraries. They love their libraries and they want to see us put
up to 50% OFF
them forward in a bigger way then we have been doing. Typically we have been going with option two, which is a bare standard in materials, but option three is two per cent more towards materials and I’m hoping that we can sway the people around the board to support that. It’s a difference of about $11,000 and what we will get for our bang for our buck is the top books that are available, more books for children, seniors’ books, e-books. Some of the complaints we saw in the survey were some empty shelves, so we want to address that,” King explained.

South Delta house prices inching upwards
Real estate board statistics show small increases for Ladner and Tsawwassen in October South Delta house prices continue to slowly inch upward. According to October sales figures from the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, the “benchmark” price for a detached single-family home in Ladner was $1,027,600, an increase of 1.2 per cent over the previous month. In Tsawwassen the price was $1,275,300, moving up, but just barely, 0.4 per cent from September. The year-to-year increase saw Ladner’s price increase by 0.8 per cent, while it was 1.7 per cent for Tsawwassen. The REBGV notes residential property sales in the region saw a 35.3 per cent increase from the sales recorded in October 2016, and an increase of 7.1 per cent compared to September 2017. “Conditions continue to vary significantly based

said REBGV president Jill Oudil. “It remains a much different story in the townhouse and apartment markets. Buyers of
these properties continue to have limited supply to choose from and are seeing upward pressure on prices.”

The price of condos in Ladner was $422,000 and in Tsawwassen it was $452,000, seeing increases of 2.2 per cent and almost
six per cent respectively over the year. As far as townhomes, the benchmark in Ladner last month was $744,800, while in Tsawwassen it was $740,200, seeing increases over the year of 16.4 per cent and 19 per cent respectively. Meanwhile, according to the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board, the benchmark for a detached home in North Delta last month was $921,400, a 10.3 per cent increase from October 2016. A townhouse was $662,200 last month, a 31 per cent increase over the year. According to the B.C. Real Estate Association, the inventory of newlybuilt multi-family homes that are complete and unoccupied in Metro Vancouver has declined markedly over the past three years.
Fraser Health launches When Words Matter guide
Fraser Health has launched a new guide to help people have a conversation that could save a life. When Words Matter is a thorough, four-page guide to talking to someone you care about when you think they are struggling with substance use. The initiative is part of a new campaign which also includes a video and advertise-
ments informed by focus groups. The guide gives a detailed account of how to: • Prepare for a conversation • Begin the conversation • Keep calm and focused • Recover when a conversation doesn’t go well • Care for yourself as someone who is impacted
by another’s substance use. “One of the major issues faced by people struggling with substance use problems – and those around them – is discomfort and fear about talking about addiction openly,” said Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Judy Darcy. “We as a society must find a way to get past the profound stigma over
addiction so that every person struggling with this issue gets the care they so desperately need. I encourage you to help stop the stigma by starting a conversation with your loved one who might need support, before it’s too late.” Fraser Health consulted extensively with more than 50 people focusing on men who were in treat-
ment, daytox or had completed treatment, as well as their support networks to inform the communications campaign. According to the BC Coroner’s Service, in British Columbia 91 per cent of illicit drug overdose deaths this year have been individuals aged 19 to 59. Of the 1,013 overdose deaths in 2017, 82 per cent have been male.
The campaign will be displayed until midDecember in bus shelters, restaurants and bars, and on Fraser Health’s social media channels. “Starting a conversation about substance use is never easy, but approaching a person you care about to have a conversation could help save their life,” said Medical Health Officer Dr. Aamir Bharmal.

Mini C-Arm added to hospital arsenal Recently acquired piece of equipment having big impact on orthopedic surgery department

A recently acquired piece of equipment is having huge impacts on the orthopedic surgery department at Delta Hospital. Thanks to the ongoing support of the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society, the hospital has added a mini C-Arm to its arsenal of enhanced medical equipment. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Matt Lewington said the department has gone from being virtually nonexistent at the hospital to incredibly busy within the space of a year. “I’m seeing 45 patients in my trauma clinics on the weekend. We have a full operating room slate and I now have about a six-month wait time to see
me in my office. It’s all due to the auxiliary and the support of the hospital,” said Lewington. He said the mini C-Arm is an X-ray machine used to take images during surgical procedures. “It’s small and can be easily positioned in and out of the smaller operating theatres we have at this hospital without taking up the space that the legacy machine did. As well, the radiation dose for the staff is drastically less with this piece of equipment,” he said. “I’m also fully trained to use the equipment, so that now frees up a tech in the radiology department. It’s very efficient and an effective use of resources.” Andreas Hochstrasser, site coordinator for medical imaging, said from a PHOTO BY ADRIAN MACNAIR

of the
Week Kiyan
Kiyan is a two year old, ninety pound, pure bred Dogo Argentino that we are helping his current owner find a new home for. He is a big puppy, and while he has a great temperament, his people and him need to work on a couple of basics - mainly not jumping up and meeting other dogs. Kiyan is perfectly crate trained, house broken and has no separation anxiety or resource guarding. He gets along great with other dogs, big and small, but does need reminders of his size and not to play too rough. We don’t feel cats would be a good idea because of his prey drive with squirrels and small animals. He loves new people, but because of his size, feel a home with small children wouldn’t be ideal as he gets excited and can knock them over. As with all our dogs, he is neutered and up to date on all shots and vaccines. We are looking for a furever home with power breed experience that can keep this guy a wonderful breed ambassador. If you feel he is a good fit for you, please email us at pbandchi@gmail.com or find our foster information and applications on our website at pbandchi.com

technology standpoint, Delta Hospital is now on par with bigger hospitals in the region. “Thanks to the auxiliary and the (Delta Hospital) foundation we have been able to have top-notch equipment, which means a lot to the staff and makes it easier to recruit people too,” he said. “It is also more suited to the work that Dr. Lewington is doing and the equipment allows for a safer working environment for the patient and staff.” Director of clinical operations Tarnia Taverner said support from the auxiliary is a tremendous asset to the hospital. “Their support, particularly to the orthopedic program, has been phenomenal,” she said. “It’s a significant amount
($82,000). The auxiliary really sees the benefit of having orthopedic services on this site.” The mini C-Arm is part of more than $400,000 worth of priority equipment the hospital has been able to purchase in the past two years thanks to the auxiliary. “We are privileged to be able to provide funds for state-of-the-art medical equipment and programs at Delta Hospital,” said auxiliary past-president Robbi Schultes. “Over the years we have donated more than $20 million, as well as providing care, comfort and service on a daily basis. This is due to the dedication and skill of the volunteers running our business enterprises together with generous community donations.”

e’ve got an arts centre in an old church, an art gallery in an old library and another arts centre in an old fire hall. We’re also moving the museum from one old municipal hall to another old municipal hall. I guess there are two ways to look at such arrangements: either Delta is very good at repurposing buildings or it’s lagging behind in constructing purpose-built facilities for our arts and culture community. Should you take the latter view, you’ll be heartened by news that a $7.7-million arts centre is in the works for North Delta, an 11,000-square-foot facility that will come complete with a theatre, music rooms and more. It will be built adjacent to the North Delta Recreation Centre after Delta struck a deal with a developer to sell the property that housed the Firehall Centre for the Arts to make way for a multi-family housing development. You’ve got to give those over at city hall marks for ingenuity as they’ll manage to have an arts centre built without incurring any debt, which has most definitely become a four-letter word under Mayor Lois Jackson’s leadership. To be fair, Delta has done a masterful job of paying down the municipal debt, to the point where it will be virtually eliminated when Jackson retires next fall, but, as I’ve lamented before, the decision not to borrow limits what can be accomplished. Delta has built artificial turf fields, bought an ice rink and upgraded recreation centres in recent years, but the arts and culture community hasn’t had as much love. Money is finally being spent to relocate the museum after years, even decades, of non-action on the file, but other groups and facilities haven’t been as lucky. As much as there’s a history of turning old buildings into something new, dating back to the 1950s when a community group transformed an old hangar at Boundary Bay Airport into an ice rink, there’s something to be said for new, purpose-built spaces. In a year or so North Deltans will be able to enjoy a new arts centre, which is likely to make those in South Delta both envious and keen to see something similar constructed in this part of the city, although, as usual, finding the money to do so will be an issue. Did someone say casino revenues?
Make healthy eating choices and cut back on the candy
I
n making my rounds to various school farms on Nov. 1 it was interesting to note it was pyjama day everywhere. Why you might wonder? It is because the kids were probably up late the night before and they were still likely amped up on way too much sugar. The theory is that wearing their PJ’s would help them keep calm while they were going through withdrawal. Speaking with the teachers, it was clear that many of them do not like the day after Halloween in the classroom. I can see why. I try to get the children outside during my visits and we always have something to do on the school farms. Last week the farmers were noticeably distracted and for the most part appeared agitated and generally hyperactive. I am sure most of us have seen these symptoms in our own homes over the years. ‘Back to school fun treats’ as the candy is marketed in retailers in early September, is never out of arms’ reach for weeks in our local grocery stores. The end aisle displays and entry foyers have castles of the stuff with every possible type of candy you can imagine. Clever sale stickers only broaden the appeal, and we have all heard the stories of moms and dads buying a 70 pack of the
Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER
‘treats’ only to run out by the first week of October. OK, I’ll fess up. I was one of those dads not too many years ago but have since been working to teach myself and kids about healthy eating choices. There is nothing wrong with a sugary treat every once in a while, but there are too many people who treat these things like legitimate snack food. Last month the World Health Organization published some recent data on childhood obesity rates. WHO is predicting that by 2022 there will be more obese children in the world than underweight children. The health complications that arise from obesity are well documented. Type 2 diabetes, cardio-vascular conditions, high blood pressure and cancer are all lurking chronic diseases that can cut a life short quickly.
This past Tuesday I made a presentation to the Delta School District’s board of education. In it I explained how the young farmers in the district choose the vegetables they want to grow. First they have to understand seed charts so that they know what they can grow and when. They vote on their choices and then it is time to sample what they want to grow. I buy these items at the supermarket and bring them to the schools for the students to eat. In general they are all pretty good about it and willingly eat the veggies to understand what they are planting. We eat the food again at harvest time. Offering new choices to the kids can be fun. This week raw spinach was offered to about 400 youngsters in the district. My quest was to find the greenest teeth in Delta and they bought in to the challenge. There were lots of first time spinach eaters and it was nice to hear from several of these rookies that they really enjoyed it. Some even said that they would ask their parents to buy some. Making food fun can help. Let’s turn these nasty stats down a little. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food. Tsawwassen has reached critical tipping point Editor: Our days of being a quiet little undiscovered pocket of paradise in the Lower Mainland are over. It can be seen on the crowded beach in the summer, traffic, speeding, high housing prices and a huge mall. Now there is the possibility of a cruise ship terminal at Roberts Bank in the future. Change and
development is inevitable all around us, but Tsawwassen is at a critical tipping point and Delta needs to see the writing on the wall. Are we to be yet another generic overpopulated “commuter city” that people just live in but never visit, or do they want to capitalize on the changes around us by creating something different and
special? Does Delta want to attract visitors to Tsawwassen as an actual destination instead of just cars full of consumers whizzing past us to the ferry or mega-mall; running red lights along 56th to get to Point Roberts to pick up their parcels; or just use our beaches in the summer but never bother to visit our town centre?
munity. It needs to draw people into town for what we can offer tourists and visitors too. If people who moved here wanted to live in a Richmond or Surrey, they would have. Our town can’t stay the same as what perhaps initially drew us to move here, but it doesn’t have to become a shadow of its former self.
Sure, more housing might be necessary to a degree, but the reality is, the true benefactors of that are the developers and realtors, not the actual residents or community. Tsawwassen needs to do something beyond building endless high-density housing and just trying to convince locals to “shop locally” to create a sustainable, independent com-
If local businesses and residents want to see our community thrive and remain special (staying the same is just no longer an option), Delta needs to come up with a creative and unique long-term plan for Tsawwassen instead of just taking the easy route and doing what every other boring “city” has already done to death. Kristin Roberts
Tenants will end up paying more Poem’s sentiment remains true Editor: Is Delta so cash strapped that they now require landlords of suites to pay a yearly $50 business license fee? About 14 years ago my wife and I purchased a revenue property in Ladner that for approximately 20 years had a basement suite in it. For those 20 years the previous owner chose to only pay single utilities. As soon as we purchased that home
we chose to pay double utilities as we thought that was only fair. Then a few years ago along came the City with new rules regarding legalizing basement suites, and guess who they came after first, yep, people like us who were being honest and paying our fair share. Now they come up with another way to squeeze more money out of us without thinking it through. All you hear
about these days is the lack of affordable housing and the shortage of rental accommodations, well I wonder why? If the City thinks they are squeezing money out of landlords’ pockets they are sadly mistaken. This cost will come right from our tenants’ pocket and I’m certain every other landlord in Delta will do the same. K&D Knowlan Tsawwassen
but whose sentiment remains true and eloquent to this day and always: “It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer,
Editor: With Remembrance Day approaching, we are reminded yet again that no freedom is so outrageously and so often abused as the freedom to do nothing. And so not just on this one special occasion, but throughout the year, we should all perhaps reflect on some words written during the Second World War in the form of a poem whose authorship remains nameless,
Who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the soldier who salutes the flag, serves under the flag and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn that same flag!” Edmund Burke perhaps said it best when he observed: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Lest we forget! The largest and longest running blanket drive in the Lower Mainland is about to get underway. The 23rd annual Realtors Care Blanket Drive, which runs from Nov. 14 to 21, will see volunteers collect warm clothing and blankets across the region. Looking back to honour veterans History buff Peter Broznitsky shares recent findings from Ladner cenotaph names research
A local man continues to honour veterans by looking to the past. A few years ago, Peter Broznitsky, a self-described history buff and amateur military researcher, started looking into the stories behind some of the names that appear on Ladner’s cenotaph. Broznitsky has been working to bring their stories to life. He said so far he’s managed to track down information on about three-quarters of the names, patching together their stories while searching through census data, military records, old newspapers and other bits and pieces found at the Delta Museum and Archives. In honour of Remembrance Day tomorrow, Broznitsky has shared one of his latest findings. According to his research, of the 27 names from the First World War, three died on the same day, (1917-10-31) Halloween, during the Battle of

years ago, a 29-year-old soldier from Ladner sat down to write a letter
to his brother back in Scotland. John Cameron tried
to describe some of his recent life in the trenches. “You’re ordered (in a whisper as you are very near the enemy lines) to dig in, off comes your equipment and you place your rifle where can grab it at a moment’s notice should Fritz get inquisitive. Then you dig as you never dug before for your life depends on getting cover before they detect you. The perspiration breaks out but you dig, your head feels like bursting but you dig, your breath is coming in short gasps but you keep on digging, you dig while on your knees, and even laying on your stomach, you dig like a maniac until you’ve got cover, then you rest and get your wind back.” A year later, John had vanished in Belgium, his final resting place now unknown. He disappeared on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 1917. Two other men from Ladner died that same day. Captain Cecil Weare,
and Private William McLennan died in different circumstances with different infantry units of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, but each had walked the streets of the village of Ladner in the early 20th century. We know the least about McLennan. Born in Rosshire Scotland, he was 27 when he joined the 72nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders in Vancouver in April 1916. He listed his occupation as a rancher. It is nowadays hard to imagine ranches in Ladner, but there were several in the South Delta. McLennan trained with the 72nd in Vancouver and then England, and landed in France in August 1916. He thus likely saw action with the Canadians on the Somme, at Vimy Ridge, and at Hill 70. He met his fate at the Battle of Passchendaele. MCLENNAN: see Page 12

Local soldiers now lie as comrades in Belgium
CONTINUED from Page 12 By October 1917, Cameron was with the 124th Pioneers, supporting the upcoming Canadian attack on Passchendaele. On the night of Oct. 31/Nov. 1, he was with a working party filling in shell holes on a road that was vital to the Canadian effort. The Germans were raining high explosive and gas shells down. Trucks loaded with ammunition caught fire and were blazing and exploding. In the dark something happened. Cameron vanished. Thought to be wounded and missing, he was declared dead days later. His name is now engraved on our cenotaph, a cenotaph in Doune Scotland, the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, and on the family headstone in Doune Cemetery. The 1910 Ladner Directory shows Weare employed as a clerk with the Lanning Fawcett & Wilson General Store. Weare, born in Hertfordshire England, was a nephew of Mrs. Gertrude Lanning.
When war broke out in August 1914, he made his way across Canada, perhaps intending to join the English forces in England. He enlisted at the age of 21 as a private with the 25th Nova Scotia Overseas Battalion in Halifax in December 1914. Landing in France in September 1915, Weare rose quickly, becoming a Lieutenant during the Battle of Courcelette on the Somme in September 1916, and won a Military Cross for gallantry and became a Captain during the Battle of Vimy Ridge. It was at Vimy that he was seriously shell shocked and deafened in one ear. He was made a conducting officer, meaning he led parties of reinforcements from base areas into the combat areas. In the early morning of Oct. 31 1917, while sleeping in a hut close to the front trenches, a bomb from a German aeroplane struck the building, severely wounding him and others. Quickly evacuated to a clearing station, his wounds proved too
great and he died. He lies buried in Lijssenthoek Cemetery, Belgium, and is remembered on the Ladner

Remembrance Day
Thousands lost at Battle of Passchendaele
The Battle of Passchendaele raged in Belgium in the summer and fall of 1917. The Canadian Corps joined the fighting there in October and would overcome almost unimaginable hardships to triumph on a brutal and muddy battlefield. This victory only came at a high price, however, as over 4,000 Canadian soldiers lost their lives and almost 12,000 more were wounded. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele. The service and sacrifice of the Canadians who fought there will never be forgotten.
In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders Fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders Fields. - John McCrae

DCLS celebrates local inclusive employers
Delta Community Living Society Solutions Employment partnered with Rotary at Work recently to host an event to celebrate businesses that have committed to hiring people with developmental disabilities. A luncheon at the Delta Golf Course included nearly 30 local businesses that have hired people with developmental disabilities.
DCLS Solutions Employment works with job seekers to identify their skills, preferences and abilities and then partners with local businesses to determine how to best meet their staffing and business needs. “It really proves to be a win-win for the people we support and for the businesses that have partnered with us,” says DCLS employment strategy man-
ager Annette Borrows. The Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association (TBIA) has established a partnership with DCLS that has been a “win-win-win-win,” says TBIA executive director Lydia Elder. “Youth with developmental disabilities were hired by TBIA as community ambassadors and gained real-life experience, businesses
in the neighbourhood were transformed and beautified, local residents appreciated the work and positive demeanor of the community ambassadors, and our small organization was able to expand its reach and do work that we are very proud of,” says Elder. Borrows says research has found that people with developmental disabilities are dependable, have high

“... for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, because we are members of His body.” Ephesians 5:29-30 A few weeks ago, a lady was visiting our church said to me, she was searching for “the perfect church.” Jokingly, I told her she would have to die to find it. There is no perfect church on this earth. The perfect church stands before God in heaven and the only perfect pastor is Jesus Himself. Only heaven has the perfect worship music department, youth director and children’s minister. On earth, a church may look good when you first walk in, but the longer you stay, the more flaws you

will find. The church is not perfect because God uses people, not angels. So why would you join an imperfect church? God calls you to an imperfect church not to make it perfect but to share His love with people. I know the church makes
mistakes, unintentionally the church might even have hurt you and I would like to apologize if that has been your experience. But here is the truth. The Church will always have imperfections in the people as well as the leadership. But the vision of the church is perfect. Love people unconditionally like God loves us. Our application of this vision has failed many times. There will always be room for improvement. Listen, our church is not perfect, we are far from it, but the One we believe in, is perfect. Jesus is the only one that gives us hope for tomorrow. He covers our mistakes and He accepts us just as we are – imperfect people.

Boating’s close encounters
Tsawwassen author takes different approach with latest release - OOPS! DAVE WILLIS

sawwassen author Peter Vassilopoulos has taken a little bit of a different approach for his latest boating book. Vassilopoulos, who has a series of cruising guides to his credit, recently released OOPS! Boating’s Close Encounters and Other Awkward Moments. “There’s supposed to be an element of entertainment in the whole thing,” he says. The longtime boater drew on his personal experiences for the book and notes it also touches on a number of serious boating situations to be avoided. It deals with decisions that had to be made to avoid dangerous and troublesome passages, foggy conditions, shallow waterways, anchoring and falling overboard, he explains. Dealing with other vessels in the fog is an important factor on the coast, he notes. “If you don’t have radar and all the right equipment, you don’t know what’s going on. You’ve got to use your brains and figure out what could happen,” he says. The book also includes many black and white photos and illustrations showing some of the situations that are described, he notes. OOPS! is available from Albany Books in Tsawwassen.

Seine River cruise includes D-Day landing site RICK MILLIKAN
Optimist contributor
Normandy’s D-Day landing site becomes the highlight of a Seine River cruise. At Rouen, American shipmates board motor coaches heading to Omaha Beach, interpretative centers and cemeteries. Joining a smaller group of Brits, Aussies and fellow Canadians, we travel to Juno Beach. Stopping first in Bayeaux, we walk through its medieval core to view the famed tapestry. Pointing out its magnificent gothic cathedral, our guide Peter recounts, “The bishop displayed the Bayeaux Tapestry to help parishioners understand the invasion of England.” A refurbished 17th century seminary now exhibits this seventy-meter masterpiece. Using audio guides, we study the remarkable needlework chronicling the Norman Conquest. King Edward is shown first promising his English throne to William of
Normandy. Panels next depict Edward’s brotherin-law Harold arriving in Normandy to confirm his vow. Subsequent panels illustrate Harold’s return to England, Edward dying and Harold claiming England’s crown for himself. William reacts to this betrayal. We see Norman boats loaded with men-atarms, archers and cavalrymen. The final section portrays the 1066 Battle of Hastings with lurid details, including the fatal arrow shot into Harold’s eye. Arriving at Juno Beach, Peter points out and explains remnants of the Second World War’s crucial battle. Of five concrete German blockhouses, one remains atop a sand dune. All had housed deadly machine guns. Mine explosives lay buried and barriers of barbed wire covered this sandy expanse and fields beyond. An amphibious tank perches on another dune. Such British tanks led the Canadian infantry through Hitler’s Atlantic Wall.
Juno Beach maintains remnants of the war. A rusted British landing craft, once carrying 36 men, lies derelict along the beach. Far offshore, waves break on crumbling caissons. By sinking these huge concrete chambers and scuttling ships, the Brits constructed an artificial harbour. Generals named it for Winston Churchill, its creator. I visualize my father-in-law, an artilleryman, arriving at Port Winston just after D-Day. After lunching at a village restaurant, we enter Juno Beach Interpretive Centre.
A film portrays some of the 14,000 Canadians who landed on D-Day. “Our soldiers courageously established this beachhead and continued to capture three seaside towns,” the Canadian docent recounts. “Advancing 10 miles, they cut off the Caen-Bayeux highway, seized Caen’s western airport and connected two British beachheads.” Proceeding along the coast, we pay our respects to fallen soldiers at three of the 15 Commonwealth cemeteries. Countless
gravestones stand in rows across expansive manicured lawns. Flowers surround each gravesite. Maple leaves, hometowns, ranks and names of each young soldier are etched into gray limestone markers. Most bear large crosses. Traditional ‘visiting stones’ lie on those displaying the Star of David. Some inscriptions indicate French resistance members, who fought alongside Canadians. Our group places roses on several gravesites. At Pegasus Museum, we learn about the 6th British Airborne’s remarkable D-Day success. “On June 5th British planes towed six Horsa Airspeed gliders …and released them at midnight 15-miles off Normandy’s coast,” guide Marie explains. “Navigating just with stopwatches through the dark cloudy night, pilots landed the first three gliders within one hundred and fifty meters of Caen Canal Bridge, their target.” We examine the replicated wooden glider
resting on a large lawn. The 27-metre wingspan lifted its 20-metre fuselage, which barely accommodated the two pilots and 28 soldier platoon. Every trooper packed a personal weapon, ammunition and up to nine grenades. Each glider carried a two-inch mortar. Leading us onto the original bridge, Marie continues the story of its capture. “A night guard heard the landing thuds and sought shelter from what he thought was aerial debris. Meanwhile, his regiment of 50 Germans slept nearby. The conversation shifts to D-Day’s insights and highlights. All of us have gained a greater understanding and appreciation of our soldiers’ valour. Their sacrifices will long be honoured on Remembrance Day. North Delta will soon be home to a new arts centre. At the Oct. 30 meeting, Delta council awarded a construction contract to Maple Leaf Homes Ltd., which is building a multifamily housing complex on the site of the old Firehall Centre for the Arts on 84th Avenue. According to a Delta staff report, the purchase and sale agreement was subject to approval of the housing project, which
was done in February. The proceeds of the sale will be used to construct the arts centre on the adjacent North Delta Recreation Centre site. The arts centre will have 11,000 square feet of space and is estimated to cost $7.7 million. Construction is expected to take just over a year. The two-storey arts centre facility will include a theatre with a large foyer and concession space, multiple music and meeting rooms, storage space and more.
“It is very exciting that we are at this point to award this contract,” said Coun. Sylvia Bishop. “I think this is a fantastic addition to the social heart. When you look at the concept drawing of the building it echoes the form and character of the rec centre, it fits neatly into the space and provides enough flexibility for all sorts of uses.” Bishop said the location is also on a public transit route, in a walkable area with lots of parking nearby.

Hawks torrid start continues Youth has been a big part of PJHL team’s success with 10 rookies in line-up MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Darren Naylor may want to take himself out for dinner one night. As the Delta Ice Hawks blitz their way through the Pacific Junior Hockey League regular season with an eye-popping 18-10-0 record, it’s easy to forget this team has 10 rookies in its line-up, including five on the blueline. The typical championship formula in the PJHL is being carried by a core of 20-year-olds, motivated to conclude their junior hockey careers with some glory. That certainly was the case with reigning champion Aldergrove who featured eight graduating players. Instead, Naylor’s recruiting efforts over the summer, as the team’s general manager, have paved the way for his success as a coach. His five first-year d-men include three — Isiah Hendricks, Thomas Carey and Aiden HansenBukata — who played for Delta Hockey Academy’s top Midget Prep team last season. Liam Visram was with Fraser Valley of the B.C Major Midget Hockey League. Naylor’s lone Midget “AAA” blueline recruit was Gabriel LeBlanc and he played a big part in Coquitlam advancing to tier one provincials. It’s a similar background for most of his incoming forwards. Captain Gary Dhaliwal and recent addition Jeevan Dosange are the lone 20-year-olds on the roster. Last Saturday ,the Hawks looked to be in a heap of trouble when they fell behind 2-0 in the early going to the second place North Vancouver Wolf Pack. They responded by outshooting the hosts 37-9 over the final two periods and winning 5-2. “That is a testament to their character,” said Naylor. “These are such a great bunch of guys. They want to be really good. They want to set records and do good things. They are motivated. I hate to repeat myself, but for the last couple of years it’s been a real good run.” Delta again faced a little adversity on Tuesday night against Ridge Meadows. The visitors erased a 2-0 deficit with a good second period that capitalized on

Delta’s Nathan Pelletier keeps the puck from Ridge Meadows’ Cameron Kovesdi during Tuesday’s win. some miscues to tie the game at 2-2. Dhaliwal restored the lead but it needed to be a much better effort in the final 20 minutes. Jordon Bogress scored the only goal of the period and rookie net minder Jordy Engleson came up with some key saves to stay perfect (7-0-0-0) on the season as the Hawks won 4-2. “I thought our second was bad tonight. I went in the (dressing room after the period) and they knew what they had to do. I didn’t say much at all,” continued Naylor.
“That was a good game and a good test for us. They have given us our toughest games. I think we may just have a little more polish and our experienced guys are a little bit higher end but (the teams) are pretty close.” The Hawks continued their roll 24 hours later in Aldergrove with a 3-2 win over the Kodiaks. They erased a 1-0 deficit on three straight goals from Dhaliwal, Rubin and Blake Bonnar. They return home Tuesday to face the Richmond Sockeyes in
the second segment of the inaugural Tunnel Cup season-long rivalry series. Delta won the first meeting 5-2 back on Sept. 21 in Richmond. The Sockeyes have made plenty of changes since as first-year head coach Steve Robinson has put his stamp on the team. “It’s been a long time since we last seen them and they have made some improvements to their team,” added Naylor. “I’m sure it’s going to be a good game.” Puck drops at 7:35 p.m. We will...

Soccerstandouts thriving on both sides of border
Two South Delta Secondary graduates in the starting 11 helped a world-renowned Ivy League school win the women’s soccer conference championship. The almost surreal feat is what Alessia Azermadhi and Olivia Sheppard accomplished last Saturday. The Tsawwassen girls helped the Princeton Tigers continue their outstanding season with a 1-0 win over Penn at Philadelphia. Ranked 13th in the nation, the 14-2 Tigers now move onto the NCAA Championships with an opening round match at home on Friday against Monmouth University. Princeton has been seeded fourth in its bracket and would face Arkansas or North Carolina State in the round of 32. Alessia Olivia Azermadhi is Azermandhi Sheppard in her senior season at Princeton and has spent much of her university career playing midfield. Sheppard is a sophomore who wasted little time cracking the Tigers starting line-up as a defender/midfielder. Both players received lucrative student aid deals to attend the New Jersey school after being part of the Whitecaps Girls Elite Program. Closer to home, there was plenty of South Delta flavour as the Canada West women’s soccer championships wrapped up on the weekend in Langley. The host Trinity Western Spartans captured their seventh Canada West title in the program’s history with a 2-1 victory over the Victoria Vikings. Both teams are at this weekend’s U SPORTS National Championships in Winnipeg. The Spartans roster features four Delta players — Danae Derksen (Delta Secondary), Jenaya Robertson (Delta), Kiersten Sawchuk (South Delta) and Rachel

Ladner’s Emily Lieuwen (left) has enjoyed another outstanding season at UVic, with a leading role in the Vikes advancing to this weekend’s nationals in Winnipeg. She was named a Canada West First Team All-Star. Sydor (South Delta). UVic’s line-up includes Delta Secondary grad Emily Lieuwen who has enjoyed another outstanding season in the Vikes’ midfield. The fourth-year science major was one of three Victoria players named to the Canada West First All-Star Team. She recorded six points and also was recognized for her solid defensive play. Lieuwen, Derksen, Sawchuck and Sydor were all
teammates on a dominant Tsawwassen Thunder girls team that played at the Metro level under coaches Bob Birarda and Jeff Derksen. The roster also included UBC players Emma Kallner and Nadia Langenberg, along with Azermadhi. Lieuwen has also thrived in the classroom at UVic. Last year, the chemistry student was recipient of the Provost Award — presented to a student-athlete who achieves a GPA of 6.6 or higher.
SFU’s Howlett named to all-academic team
Former SDSSS volleyball standout Christine Howlett is one of three players from Simon Fraser University named to the 2017 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Volleyball AllAcademic Team. It is the third straight year Howlett has been selected. The senior carries a 3.51 grade point average Christine Howlett
(GPA) and is pursuing a degree from the Beedie School of Business. On the court, she has been a consistent threat for SFU from the outside, averaging 2.57 kills-per-set with a .250 hitting percent. On Saturday, Howlett and Madison Power will be honoured in their final home games as SFU takes on Northwest Nazarene at 7 p.m.

LAMBERT, Francis (Frank) Lloyd July 22, 1930 - October 20, 2017 It is with much sadness and love we say goodbye to our beloved father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather Frank Lambert, who passed away on October 20, 2017 at the age of 87 years. He is lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife, Joan of 60 years; daughters, Gayle (Richard) and Judy (John); grandchildren, Alissa (Adrian), Christopher; and great-granddaughter Siena. His family in Scotland, sister Morag (Alex) and family; sister-in-law Ella (predeceased by his brother Charlie) and family. Cousin Sally (Chuck) Hazelton; and sister-in-law Dot Hughes and family. Frank was a loyal member and brother to the Richmond Masonic Lodge 142 for 46 years and Worshipful Master in 1979. He immigrated to Canada from Greenock, Scotland in 1955 where he met Joan (nee Hughes) in Powell River, B.C; married in Winnipeg on October 3, 1957, and Frank became a Canadian citizen in 1969. Working as a carpenter, he joined the Richmond School Board in 1961, where he became the Director of the Building Society and coordinated the building of McNeely Elementary School in Richmond in 1991. Frank retired in 1991. Our family wish to express our sincere gratitude to the wonderful staff at Exquisicare Manor for their caring, kindness and support given during these last few months. An honest man here lies at rest, As e’er God with His image blest: The friend of man, the friend of truth; The friend of age, and guide of youth: Few hearts like his, with virtue warm’d, Few heads with knowledge so inform’d: If there’s another world, he lives in bliss; If there’s none, he made the best of this.
