Delta Pacers Jagger Schurman delivers a kill between a pair of Elgin Park opponents during his team’s semi-final sweep Wednesday at the Fraser Valley AAA Boys Volleyball Championships. The Ladner school is ranked No. 4 in B.C. and has advanced to the Valley final for the first time in over 15 years. The Pacers will take on No. 2 ranked Earl Marriott tonight in South Surrey.
Delta South MLA Ian Paton is throwing his support behind Liberal leadership hopeful Todd Stone. Paton this week announced that he’s endorsing Stone, one of six candidates vying for party leadership following the resignation of former premier Christy Clark. “After months of deliberation and wringing my hands as to who I should support, I finally decided that I’m going to support Todd Stone…there were three or four caucus members when I got elected who stood out in my mind that if there was ever a leadership race they would be excellent candidates. He (Stone) is young, bright, wellspoken and will have appeal,” said Paton. Stone, who will attend a party get together at Paton’s East Ladner farm this afternoon where he will make some policy announcements, hoping to get Delta farmers’ support, has been touring the province along with the other candidates. The Kamloops-South Thompson MLA in his last portfolio in government served as the transportation minister who strongly defended the George
Massey Tunnel Replacement Project. His last visit to Delta this spring didn’t go over very well when anti-bridge activists showed up to disrupt a groundbreaking ceremony. Forced to speak to reporters in a tiny former fire hall, Stone explained the many attributes of the project, noting much technical work has gone into analyzing it and that there’s overwhelming public support. He also reiterated the bridge project, which has been suspended by the new NDP government pending a technical review, is about creating jobs as well as relieving the worst congestion point in B.C. Stone’s leadership platform includes creating up to 75,000 new childcare spaces and dealing with affordable housing issues. He has the endorsement of four other sitting MLAs as well as several former MLAs. Also in the campaign are former Surrey mayor and Conservative MP Dianne Watts, and MLAs Andrew Wilkinson, Michael Lee, Sam Sullivan and Mike de Jong. The leadership vote will take place between Feb. 1 and Feb. 3 via online as well as telephone voting.

Spot staff jump into action Tsaw. restaurant bartender, server and floor manager help patron in distress IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Quick action from the staff at the Tsawwassen White Spot likely saved a man who went into medical distress recently. Just after 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 2, a patron enjoying a meal in the restaurant’s lounge area, went up to the bartender holding his chest saying he was in trouble and that he needed help. Seconds later he hit the floor. Bartender Chelsea Kennedy, who is a certified first aid attendant, server Shane Dermott, also certified in CPR and floor manager Alexandra Vandenberg jumped into action. “I came around the corner and saw the man laying down and I thought maybe he slipped or something,” Dermott recalled. “Alex and Chelsea asked me to go get something for his head, so we have these cushions and I went and got one and when I got back, they said he wasn’t breathing. Chelsea and I looked at each other and it was like, OK, let’s start CPR.” With Vandenberg on the phone with 911 and the busy restaurant patrons looking on, Dermott started CPR. “Alex then said the 911 dispatcher asked whether we had an AED (defibrillator), which we did. I went and grabbed it and Chelsea took over CPR,” Dermott said. “I came back and she knew how to hook it up, which she did and we shocked him and he started coming around. A few minutes later the firefighters were here and they took over. It was pretty crazy.” Having the AED on hand and the staff trained how to use it was key to saving the man’s life

Quick action from White Spot Tsawwassen employees Alexandra Vandenberg, Shane Dermott and Chelsea Kennedy helped save a man who was in medical distress at the restaurant on Nov. 2. Dermott is pictured below with the AED that the staff used. according to Delta fire Chief Dan Copeland, who wrote a letter of thanks to the staff. Copeland said the three staff members were professional and displayed the calmness of veteran first responders. “I wish to express our sincere appreciation to White Spot management for its foresight in having its staff trained in first aid and having an AED in the restaurant,” he wrote. “This factor, as well as the excellent response from your staff, played an integral part in helping to save the patient’s life. Delta is very fortunate to have concerned and involved businesses and individuals such as you in the community.” Manager Randy Kaiser said a similar incident
occurred about three years ago in their lounge. He said they didn’t have a defibrillator then, but that incident was a wakeup call that it would be a good idea to have an AED
on hand and that staff were trained how to use it. “It was a pretty remarkable situation. We have an older clientele, and sometimes things happen, so it’s good to know that we
have this piece of equipment should a need arise,” he said. Manager Carmen Becir was on shift three years ago during that first medical incident. “We certainly learned a lesson or two from the last time,” she said. “To know that neither of us were here during this latest emergency and that our staff handled things so awesome really makes us proud.” Kaiser said White Spot is looking at making it a company policy to have an AED in all their restaurants and to have all staff trained how to use it. “It costs money, but that doesn’t matter. I’ll spend $2,000 and get the training for my staff if it means saving someone’s life,” he said.

Snow geese arrive in big numbers Initial estimates have area population at over 108,000, already matching last year’s total SANDOR GYARMATI

It’s going to be bad news if their numbers keep growing. A huge population of snow geese is again making its presence known in Delta, as birds arrive annually from Wrangel Island in Russia. Roughly half the migrating birds travel the Pacific Flyway to central California with
the remainder wintering in B.C. and Washington. A lesser snow goose management plan a few years ago recommended a population of no higher than 50,000 to 70,000 in this area, but initial estimates have this year’s population at over 108,000, matching last year’s total. Problem is, it appears the numbers will continue to climb. That means trouble

Kiyan is a two year old, ninety pound, pure bred Dogo Argentino that we are helping his current owner find a new home for. He is a big puppy, and while he has a great temperament, his people and him need to work on a couple of basics - mainly not jumping up and meeting other dogs. Kiyan is perfectly crate trained, house broken and has no separation anxiety or resource guarding. He gets along great with other dogs, big and small, but does need reminders of his size and not to play too rough. We don’t feel cats would be a good idea because of his prey drive with squirrels and small animals. He loves new people, but because of his size, feel a home with small children wouldn’t be ideal as he gets excited and can knock them over. As with all our dogs, he is neutered and up to date on all shots and vaccines. We are looking for a furever home with power breed experience that can keep this guy a wonderful breed ambassador. since tidal marshes, including Westham Island, are seeing overgrazing, while farms are also feeling the impact. Most geese and other water fowl will graze on grasses above the soils, but snow geese will dig down and eat the entire plant, roots and all, to cause substantial damage. In Richmond the problem is even more pronounced as geese are being forced away from the marsh near the Vancouver Airport, prompting them to occupy city parks and playgrounds. Sean Boyd, a federal bird biologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, has been studying snow geese populations since the 1980s, when the Fraser-Skagit population was around 50,000. Last year’s number was the highest ever
recorded, he said. “I’ve heard reports from a Russian biologist on Wrangel Island that weather conditions were pretty good and quite a few young came off the colony, so I expect at least 108,000 to 112,000, but probably more. So we could have another bumper year.” A variety of factors are behind the robust population including warmer weather at Wrangel Island, bird sanctuaries and farms along their flight paths as well as a lack of hunting. Boyd noted that there was a balance as far as the marshes regrown to what is being consumed by the geese in the 1990s, but after their number swelled above 60,000 there’s been more pressure on the estuary. It’s something that can been seen at Wetsham Island where a very large mudflat has grown in place of the important
marsh, he warned. “You can say they’re negatively affecting their own food source in the marshes,” he said. Boyd noted for some reason farms in Delta haven’t been as ravaged as much as one would expect. He suspects that’s because a healthy eagle population is keeping geese away. However, in the next few years farms could have a big problem if the geese lose their food source, he explained. Delta councillor and MLA Ian Paton, an East Ladner hay farmer, said he’s noticed a lot of waterfowl including lesser snow geese on his farm and other farmers have been saying the same thing regarding their land. “People don’t understand that geese can come in and really clean out your hay crop, so in the spring when grass starts

growing you will say, ‘My goodness, my volume is down 40 per cent because of the damage that was done by geese,’” he said. “We do have a provincial program we’re enrolled in where we do get some compensation from damage from geese and ducks and swans but it never seems to amount to the cost of reseeding.” Drew Bondar, program manager for the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust, said his group doesn’t have numbers as far as how much of the winter cover crops they planted have been eaten up by the waterfowl. A DFWT report notes it’s estimated that by March every winter, 70 per cent of all winter cover crops fields planted for waterfowl in Delta show evidence of grazing and 50 percent are intensely grazed.

A 15-year-old North Delta teen appeared in Surrey provincial court Tuesday where he faced a variety of charges in connection to a stabbing and robbery last week outside Sungod Recreation Centre.
Delta police arrested the suspect on Saturday. He was remanded in custody over the weekend. Police have recommended charges including aggravated assault, robbery, disguise with intent and assault with a weapon. On Tuesday night, Nov.
7, officers attended the recreation centre shortly after 8:30 p.m. after a report of an injured male. According to police an 18-year-old male was approached by two males wearing balaclavas. The two males robbed the victim stabbing him in the process. The victim made
his way to the recreation centre where staff acted quickly rendering first aid and calling 911. The victim was transported to hospital for medical treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. The two suspects fled the area on foot.

Lots of opportunity for port growth: CEO Robin Silvester guest speaker at Delta Chamber of Commerce SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
There’s lots of opportunity for port growth in Delta. That’s the message Port Metro Vancouver president and CEO Robin Silvester conveyed at a recent Delta Chamber of Commerce lunch gathering in Tsawwassen where he provided an update on port-related activities. Explaining the importance of the port, which aims to be sustainable and a good corporate citizen in Delta, as economic and job generators for the community and the country, Silvester noted Delta is already home to Canada’s largest, busiest port. “As we look ahead, what we see is opportunity for growth increasing. It’s Canada’s trade that drives growth opportunity for the port,” he said. “Given the growth ahead, we have to be very focused on making sure we continue to develop capacity to enable Canada’s trade. And, some would say, ever more important as north-south trade looks a little more
shaky as it as in the last few decades, the connections through the port to other international markets are only likely to be more and more important to all of us.” As far as current projects under construction in Delta, a truck staging facility is finally beginning, a project aimed at addressing concerns about trucks forced to back up on local roadways including Deltaport Way. The staging area will be able to accommodate 140 trucks in case the port isn’t able to accept them. Located at the intersection of Highway 17, Highway 17A and Deltaport Way on provincial land, the port authority will operate the facility under a long-term lease from the province. The project also includes a secure vehicle access gate requiring a valid port pass, a Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement area for truck safety inspections, a new highway exit ramp to facilitate access from Highway 17 and an additional road entrance ramp to allow traffic access onto
Deltaport Way. Having room for future expansion, the facility is scheduled for completion in late 2018. One of the port’s other projects now under construction is a new container inspection facility on industrial land at the Tsawwassen First Nation. Part of the Beyond the Border Action Plan, an initiative announced several years ago by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President Barack Obama, the facility will be on a 4.4-hectare (11-acre) site. Containers pegged for inspection currently have to be trucked to a facility in Burnaby before returning to the terminal. The port’s biggest proposed project is Terminal 2, a new three-berth container facility that would be built on a manmade island adjacent to the existing container port at Roberts Bank. It’s been slowly winding its way through the federal approval process as an independent panel sifts through the application. Noting T2 will help accommodate Canada’s long-term trade needs,
Silvester said current capacity will be exhausted by the mid-2020s, so hopefully the new terminal will be ready for operations by that period. He added a lot of work has gone into analyzing potential impacts and how to mitigate them. Silvester also noted the Gateway 2030 program will identify new road and rail projects required to accommodate the growth and movement in containers. Some funding requests to the federal government have already been submitted. After going over some of the port’s environmental initiatives in Delta, Silvester answered questions from the audience, including whether the port is considering short sea shipping. He answered it will depend on “critical mass” including availability of industrial land near the river. Following his presentation, Silvester told the Optimist the port has begun preliminary studies into the feasibility of a new cruise ship terminal in Delta or Richmond.

Winter Holiday Safety
Winter holidays are a time for families and friends to get together. But that also means a greater risk for fire. Following a few simple tips will ensure a happy and fire-safe holiday season. • • • •
• • • • • • •
•
HOLIDAY DECORATING Be careful with holiday decorations. Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant. Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both. Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect. Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged. Keep decorations away from windows and doors. HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING Test your smoke alarms and tell guests about your home fire escape plan. Keep children and pets away from lit candles. Keep matches and lighters up high in a locked cabinet. Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop. Ask smokers to smoke outside. Remind smokers to keep their smoking materials with them so young children do not touch them. Provide large, deep ashtrays for smokers. Wet cigarette butts with water before discarding.

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Once again Delta police are reminding residents to lock their vehicles and remove all their valuables after a rash of theft from vehicles last weekend in Beach Grove. According to police, most incidents occurred overnight Saturday into Sunday morning. In most cases the vehicles were left unlocked, but not empty. Items stolen from the vehicles included, GPS, laptop computer, clothing and loose change. In one specific incident, at approximately 4:20 a.m. Sunday on Farrell Cres., a citizen witnessed a male breaking into a neighbour’s vehicle and confronted the suspect. The suspect fled in a larger grey/black diesel truck. The vehicle was last seen travelling northbound on 56th St. toward Hwy. 17A. The witness also indicated that an older model grey/ black Ford Bronco may have been associated to
the suspect that fled in the diesel truck. The suspect males are described as both being Caucasian, with scruffy beards and goatees, in their 20 to 30s. “Police continue to investigate these incidents and encourage citizens to report any and all suspicious persons and activity in their neighbourhoods,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks. “Police discourage approaching suspects, instead encourage you to be good witnesses and gather as much detail as possible. Although we appreciate the efforts of this citizen, your personal safety is something we don’t want you to compromise.” At Wednesday’s monthly Delta police board meeting, Chief Neil Dubord presented the monthly crime statistics saying that it was a “very good news report” other than one item. “Theft from vehicles continues to be something

we are struggling with in Delta – with a 12 per cent increase over last year,” said Dubord. “We continue to look at programs, especially moving into this holiday season, it’s going to be even more important with Christmas presents left in cars and people getting new phones and Ipads and everything is left in the car.” Dubord said volunteers were out throughout South Delta just last week leaving notes on cars saying that the vehicle was left unlocked or that valuables were left in plain sight. “It’s a message that we continue to struggle with getting across to people,” he added. “Most of the thefts are taking place overnight and most of the vehicles are left unlocked. Typically the MO is either one or two people come into an area and just try every car door up and down the street. They’ll hit 50 or 60 per cent that are open and they’ll jump in and take a look and steal whatever they can.”

t’s only one more year, but those extra 365 days could prove to be a real psychological hurdle. Tomorrow is the third Saturday in November, and given it’s been three years since the last civic election, voters would typically be all set to go to the polls about now. That won’t be happening as we now elect local politicians to four-year terms, which means it will be another year (11 months, actually) before we’re able to cast ballots. This longer term, which brings civic politicians in line with their provincial and federal counterparts, is new territory for a level of government that at one point elected its leaders for just two years at a time, moving to three-year terms about three decades ago. Given those in the civic arena are, for the most part, part-time politicians, unlike senior level brethren, they often have other factors to consider, including how political life impacts work, family, retirement and more. When we asked members of Delta council about their political futures last month, we gained few insights, which could be a case of those currently in office not wanting to show their hands too far in advance, but I also get the sense that extra year is really giving some a reason to pause. That’s understandable given few of us could say for certain where we’ll be in five years, which is how far away the end of the next term is from today (or at least it was from last month). A two-year commitment was nothing and even three years didn’t seem like that long a time, but there’s something about an extra 12 months that has potential candidates thinking long and hard whether they want to devote that amount of time to additional public service. Delta council has had a fair bit of continuity over the past few decades with many members having served for 10, 15 or even 20-plus years, so in that respect a four-year term isn’t an issue, but when politicians get to a certain stage – and I would suggest there are several on council at that point now – committing to another four years becomes a bigger deal. Where will you be in the fall of 2022? Seems like a long way off, doesn’t it, but if you’re contemplating another run for office, you’ve got to be sure your preferred answer to that question is city hall.
Big changes to real estate industry being felt locally
H
ave you ever wondered what it would be like if municipalities could change any law that effects
your life? Imagine if the City of Richmond decided to save money by removing all traffic lights and stop signs, and to reduce accidents the speed limit on all roads in Richmond would be reduced to five km/h? Can you see how long it would take anyone to drive around or through Richmond? If you owned a home or business in Richmond these changes would have a lasting effect on your personal life and your investments. The speed of driving around Richmond may not change much about your daily life, but it will impact how you live and how you feel about where you live. Fortunately there are provincial laws that restrict municipalities from exercising indiscriminate changes to driving in the province. However when it comes to municipal planning and building bylaws it seems like anything is an option and everything can be changed. It seems to be constant content in the Optimist where the City of Delta posts pages of properties where developers have requested various changes and variances to the recognized Official Community Plan and for various bylaws. These include: smaller side

yards, smaller back yards, relaxed parking requirements and additional height. Much of the real estate industry has changed dramatically in the last few years from the business of looking for homes for the relocation of families to the business of looking for opportunities for developers. This has had a dramatic effect on neighbourhoods all over Delta and the Lower Mainland. There was a time when the house on the block that needed the most repairs was bought by a young family who would fix it up and raise their family there. Now any home that has the possibility to be sub-divided is at risk. It is bought by speculators for too much money who are confident they can knock it down and put up a couple of million dollar homes on the same lot after some variances are approved by the City. So the young family cannot afford to live here and the neigh-
bourhood has to accept oversized homes crammed onto small lots with insufficient parking that changes the neighbourhood forever. Anyone who objects to this intrusion is called a nimby or being against progress. I remember when Communist China was preparing for the Olympics and the stories of people being forced from their homes which were bulldozed in the name of progress. There has to be another way to change this process so neighbourhoods don’t have to constantly mobilize to fight these numerous requests. In a democracy residents should have the opportunity to be involved in the planning and bylaws of the community and the municipality should be tasked with rigidly upholding those requirements. Someone has to consider the long-term effects on communities where this is occurring. Large new houses in existing neighbourhoods cause the increase in municipal taxes so seniors deal with ever increasing taxes in their retirement. As I said young families simply can’t afford to own a home to raise a family, and I really can’t think of any positive effect these new developments have on our existing neighbourhoods. I find the way the housing market is going is actually counterproductive for existing communities and is already effecting the next generation.

FOOT Tunnel lighting should be upgraded CARE
Editor: The City of Delta with Delta taxpayer money are stating that the George Massey Tunnel is unsafe and should be replaced with a 10-lane high-level bridge. More sensibly they are also advocating that safety measures and repairs be made to the George Massey Tunnel. The question arises, “What, should be done, or what should have
been done to improve its safety?” There were two reports written by Crippen Wright Engineering Ltd. in 1955 for the then Minister of Highways, P.A. Gaglardi. The first one was on Nov. 29, 1955, and it was called: “Report on Fraser River Tunnel at Deas Island.” This report was to determine the feasibility and cost of a tunnel crossing, given the location and the soil conditions.
It concluded that tunnel was feasible and recommended that it be built at the Deas Island location on the Fraser River. On page 18 of the report, it states, “Lighting of the tunnel cannot be studied without considering at the same time the lining. The character of the lining, and its cleanliness, affect its ability to reflect light and the tunnel must be well lighted.” The George Massey
Tunnel was built some 58 years ago. You would think that there would already be an emergency plan in place between the cities of Richmond and Delta that would address the situation whenever there was an accident in the George Massey Tunnel. My suggestion would be that the Ministry of Transportation should make the following improvements now: Install the ceramic
tile lining to the George Massey Tunnel that was advocated in the Nov. 29, 1955 report, just prior to it being built in 1959. Upgrade the lighting to maximize the benefits of the ceramic tiles. Improve the emergency response procedures. Let us not wait for the decision on what is to be done about the transportation crossing issue across the Fraser River. Douglas George Massey
Response to fentanyl crisis has been total failure
Editor: The response to the fentanyl crisis has been a complete failure. Look at the facts. Subject overdoses, first responders administer First Aid, subject is rushed to a hospital and pulls through and is released back onto the streets to repeat the same scenario over and over again. This is the solution to this horrific problem, not likely. Here is the correct solution. When a subject overdoses, yes let’s attend to them, but once the subject recovers do not let them back onto the streets.
It’s time for the provincial government to take charge and re-open Riverview Hospital and every single person who overdoses on drugs is immediately incarcerated for 30 days for detoxing treatment. After 30 days they are released. However, if a repeat overdose occurs, the next incarceration is for six months. Again the goal is to get these people off drugs. Anything less is a pathetic joke. If the so called do-gooders believe it’s society’s responsibility to help these poor individuals is it not conceivable that maybe it’s
also society’s obligation to help get these people off of drugs. I resent my tax dollars being diverted to this crisis in such a wasteful manner. Remember everyone this is a self-induced crisis. Everyone who takes drugs do so on their own, no one makes them take drugs. If the government will not address the detox side of this crisis stop wasting my good money and resources. Nothing will change, stop reporting it on my news, I don’t care anymore. If society doesn’t wish to act in the appropriate manner why should I or
any other taxpayer care at all? It’s time to do the right thing. Our government must step up and do what’s required. Nothing else will cut it.
These people need help even if they think otherwise. Quit worrying about their rights and start thinking about their lives. Barrie McDonald

if my proxy vote via our MLA does count. Our newly elected MLA for Delta South revealed in his column he is a voice on provincial farmland and health issues through his appointments and that “every vote really does count” to deliver results. Our previous MLA revealed in this column that faith in democracy

Delta affirms support for refugee families IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Civic politicians recently received an update regarding refugee families living in Delta, along with projected numbers anticipated to arrive in B.C. this year. According to the Delta report, between Nov. 4, 2015 and Dec. 31, 2016, 105 Syrian refugees were settled in Delta. During that same time, newcomers also arrived from Iraq, Congo, Somalia, Sudan and Afghanistan. From their arrival at the Immigrant Services Society of BC Welcome Centre in Vancouver, newcomers to B.C. are settled into homes with the support of many immigrant service agencies.
After six months, families may choose elsewhere in Canada. The immigrant target for B.C. for 2017 is 900 individuals, 720 of which are destined for Metro Vancouver. “Staff will continue to work with all of these organizations to ensure our current families have the supports that they need and that the supports are in place for future refugees,” said director of corporate services Sean McGill. Along with that update, Delta council has written letters of support directed at three provincial ministries affirming six recommendations made by the Immigrant Service Society of BC research group. According to the report,

the Immigrant Service Society of BC conducted a review pertaining to Syrian refugees after their first year in B.C. and the status of services available to them. The six recommendations that came out of that review aim to assist current refugees integrate better into their new Canadian homes and will hopefully make the path for future refugees easier when they enter Canada. The recommendations include adjusting current regulations to allow all B.C. Income Assistance recipients to earn up to 50 per cent of their monthly allowance without claw back and expediting the issuance of personal health numbers for newly arrived refugees.

Annual campaign benefits those in need IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The season of giving has started once again in South Delta with the eighth annual Women Helping Women campaign. With the help of residents in Delta, Richmond, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Mission and Vancouver, more than 650 gift bags and care kits were distributed to women, men and teens in need last year. The campaign collects personal beauty products for women in shelters and local women in need. Organizer Pindi Mann said
they are hoping to beat last year’s totals. “We do this every year to boost the gift of self-care to women going through a difficult patch over the Christmas holidays,” said Mann. “Every donation, small or large, helps. Our main focus has always been products for women, but we will be collecting some items for men as well and one of the residential recovery homes we support provides services to both men and women. This year we are also happy to be helping Azure Transition House - the only transition house in Delta which just recently opened.”
Donations will be accepted from now until Dec. 5 at Lawlor Goldsmith Shoppe, Muddy River Landing, Changes Hair Studio, Locks ’n Lashes, Yoga Union, Salon Diva, 30 Minute Hit, Deas Island Dance, and the Ladner Royal Canadian Legion. Packaging of the gift bags will take place on Dec. 6 at the Ladner Community Centre from 1 to 8 p.m. More volunteers are a needed for packing day. For more information, check out Women Helping Women South Delta on Facebook or email Mann at p_mann@telus.net.

Students ready to dance Los Gitanos school presents La Rosa Negra flamenco show in Tsawwassen

os Gitanos School of Spanish Dance is celebrating its 16th anniversary with a performance at the Royal Canadian Legion in Tsawwassen next Friday at 7 p.m. The show is the latest edition “La Rosa Negra” series that are a signature feature of Los Gitanos, with the senior students performing their latest dances. Los Gitanos was founded by Beverly Mantovani in 2001 teaching the syllabus of the Spanish Dance Society. Mantovani is an active member of the Tsawwassen community and a finalist in the Hats Off to Excellence awards in 2008, 2012 and 2013. She received the Mentor of the Arts Award in 2010. Her training was in South Africa where she studied at the Royal Academy (ballet), Modern Dance and the Spanish Dance Society (flamenco), and has become recognized as an outstanding performer and teacher. Since settling in Tsawwassen in 2001 and establishing Los Gitanos, she has created a highly respected flamenco school, producing a loyal and enthusiastic cadre of students and spectacular performances. Embracing real winter in La Mauricie, Que. Activities like skiing, snowshoeing, fatbiking, Nordic hiking and snow tagging can be enjoyed
The ice fishing is superb here in La Mauricie. The Specs bite all around me, causing whoops of excitement as flopping fish are hoisted high and displayed with pride. I join in, cheering every catch, while watching my own ice-fishing rod do nothing but sway in the breeze. At first there is guidance, “Try jigging the line.” I jig the line, I dance a jig around the hole, and I offer the fishing gods a drop of Caribou liqueur. Still the fish do not bite. Soon advice is replaced by pity and then by impatience, as the guide announces that as soon as I have my catch, we can retire to the warming hut for dinner. Then, finally, a bite - I haul out a big, beautiful fish, holding it up for all to admire. What they see is a teasing twisting trout slip the hook, give me a wink,
and then masterfully pull off a double somersault before hitting the centre of the fishing hole with an excellent re-entry. The group disperses to enjoy their catch, fried up fresh on the open fire, and I am left to beg for tasty handouts. My angling game has never been very good, but here, in the winter playground of La Mauricie, Que., there is so much more to enjoy that I won’t have time to dwell on my fishing failings. To celebrate winter you need a healthy dose of snow, and that’s what we have in La Mauricie National Park as our group drags our baggage sleds into our evening abodes. I feel like an Artic explorer, but my accommodation for the night is a very comfortable Parks Canada o’TENTik, a cross between a tent and a rustic cabin, heated by a woodburning stove. With snowshoes on our packs and crampons on our boots we hike the five km to a backcountry lake for Snow Tagging. km groomed trail network. The park is a 536 square kilometre conservation area in the Laurentian Mountains, with a bevy of winter adventures on offer, from traditional sports like skiing and snowshoeing, to more recent coldweather pursuits like fatbiking, Nordic hiking and snow tagging. Fat-biking essentially
involves mountain biking on snow, with balloon-like tires. Here is an activity where I can really wheel, I’m thinking, just before I wobble off the packed trail, bury my front tire in a soft bank, and catapult myself face-first into the snow. I’m beginning to sound a tad inept, but in this case I soon get the hang of it. The single-track
meanders its way through the trees; you peddle hard up steep inclines and then whoop with excitement racing down the long curving runs. Initially I thought snowtagging involved running around in clunky snowshoes in an exhausting game of winter tag, but discover it’s a far more cultured activity. We set off with snowshoes strapped to our backs and crampons belted on boots, to give traction on the icy trails. A remote frozen lake is our blank canvass, and with a compass and a template we are able to trace an ephemeral piece of art on the virgin snow. Teamwork is required, as are the abilities to read a compass and walk in a fairly straight line. Afterwards, we hike back up the hillside to gaze down in wonder at the masterpiece we’ve created. Lodge, perched high above Lac Sacacomie. Once again, a plethora of winter activity is on the menu, from a frantic game of broomball, to a ski plane flight with Hydravion Adventures, to a dog sled journey over the frozen lake. After all the exercise, I slip into my robe and head to the resort’s Spa for some relaxation in the saunas, eucalyptus-scented steam room, outdoor hot tub and a cold water pool with a frigid waterfall that I pretend I don’t see. La Mauricie is also a haven for snowmobilers, with roughly 3,500 km of trails numbered and marked with directional signposts like highways. It is a world apart – one cannot help but be in awe of La Mauricie’s “Real Winter.” Travel Writers’ Tales is an independent newspaper syndicate that offers professionally written travel articles to newspaper editors and publishers. Craft fair at St. David’s

St. David’s Christmas Craft Fair kicks off on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 10 a.m. with a Keen Footwear sample sale that launches the Fair’s European-style Christkindlemarkt. The footwear sale is held semi-annually in May and November at St. David’s Anglican Church in Tsawwassen. This yearend sale of Keen’s winter lines, combined with parish craft stalls’ gallimaufry of goods, promise fairgoers a rewarding visit. Add Kartoffelsalat (German warm potato salad) and Bratwurst sausage for lunch in St. David’s Café, perhaps coffee and pastry, and visualize a centuries-old Christkindlemarkt in another time and place. And there is much more. Again this year, Lesley Sutherland (Children and Youth Ministries) has her Creation Zone group re-purposing the historic screw-finish glass Mason jar that has preserved the fruits of the harvest

for more than 150 years. The youth have also made an assortment of imaginative hand-crafted items that range from jewelled boxes of jelly beans and candy trains and sleighs, to snowmen filled with Scotch mints, each reflecting the love and dedication of the kids that made them. Nor will the younger set be able to resist the small jars of plaything green gooey (pliable) slime for sale at the Creation Zone stall. But not all Mason canning jars are repurposed
by creative youth, for no home-baking stall is without its ever-practical Mason jars filled with jams, jellies, pickles and relish. All manner of kitchen edibles, including a selection of frozen fruit pies, will attract the shopper intent on taking home ready-made baked goods or a jar of preserves. Christmas Craft Fair hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. located in the cul-de-sac of 51A Street. For more information see: www.stdavidsdelta. com.

For the final installment in my three-part series on low back pain I have asked registered massage therapist Mike Reoch of Well + Able clinic in Ladner (wellandable.ca) to give us some tips, as well as the how’s and why’s to this very common problem. Reoch is passionate about this topic and explains that pain in general actually has a greater economic health burden than cancer, heart disease and diabetes combined. And when it comes to pain, back pain is the most common pain complaint affecting eight out of 10 of us in our lifetime. He goes onto explain that back pain is due to a number of factors, but can be split into two groups: non-specific back pain (NSBP), and mechanical back pain. Non-specific lower back
pain (NSLBP), as inferred from its name, usually doesn’t have any identified underlying or specific causes or diseases. It may be due to an over-stretch of a muscle or ligament, or the pain may also be caused by a problem with the vertebrae, spinal nerves or muscles surrounding it. Mechanical back pain indicates that the source of the pain was triggered by the movements of the spine. One part of the spine, or a few, have triggered the pain. These could be spinal column itself, or the ligaments, tendons, muscles, intervertebral discs, vertebral bodies, and facet joints. This type of back pain typically occurs after a recent injury. What can a registered massage therapist do to help relieve low back pain? An RMT is best at helping people who have back pain with certain positions or movements, because the therapist can help work out the tight muscles. Massage also improves the blood circulation, which aids in recovery, increases the range of motion of your joints (by relaxing the muscles that surround it), and increases the endorphin levels in the body, which in turn, make
up to 50% OFF
you feel good (which is very effective when managing chronic pain). As part of a good treatment plan, an RMT can also help you decide on personalized stretches and movements to relieve your pain at home. Depending on the origin of the pain Reoch says you may only need one treatment. NSLBP usually clears up after one to four treatments, and mechanical back pain should clear up after four to six weeks of supervised care. What are some tips to help someone prevent low back pain? Reoch is a huge advocate of exercise for low back pain treatment (I knew I liked him for a reason). He explains that exercise has the best evidence behind it to decrease and keep away most pains in the body especially low back pain. One that the best (and cheapest ways) to prevent back pain that he tells his patients is to simply walk at least 20 minutes a day. And, if safe and possible to do 200 minutes a week of activity that makes you breath hard and sweat. PJ Wren is a local personal trainer and writer. and can be reached at www.thestudio.ca.

Not in God’s Name
In light of the escalating violence and turmoil we are hearing almost daily now in the news, I have recently found myself caught up in reading a couple of books by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. He is a sought after speaker and had served as the Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth from 1991 to 2013. After hearing a lecture by him, I purchased two of his more recent books, Not in God’s Name and The Dignity of Difference. Powerful writing, deep analysis, and strong insights. This is sounding like a book review but yes, I would recommend his work.
Minister’s Minute DANIEL KIRKEGAARD
Tsawwassen United Church
A paragraph on the first page caught my attention and challenges me as a minister in the Christian faith to engage others in ever deeper conversations of our response to the
causes of the rising violence in our world. “Too often in the history of religion, people have killed in the name of the God of life, waged war in the name of the God of peace, hated in the name of the God of love and practised cruelty in the name of the God of compassion. When this happens, God speaks, sometimes in a still, small voice almost inaudible beneath the clamour of those claiming to speak on his behalf. What he says at such times is: Not in my name.” The question we may each ask ourselves is, when do see ourselves doing this? It’s a good first step.

Meditate at Tsaw. library The Mindfulness Meditation series with Dr. Suman Kollipara returns to the Tsawwassen Library this month. We all know how physical exercise is at the core of well-being. We take our body to the gym for burning those extra calories, toning the muscles and sweating out toxins. What about taking your brain to the gym? Did you know that chronic stress changes your brain structure and affects your physical and emotional well-being? Meditation for Stress Management, set for this Saturday, Nov. 18 from 2 to 3:30 p.m., offers the tools and techniques to exercise your brain and to relax and rejuvenate. Emotions – the foundation of human life – often suffocate us and drain all our energy reserves, taking us on a roller coaster ride, but we can train our brains to choose our emotions. Did you know that toxic emotions not only affect your relationships, but also change your brain? Find out how to exercise your brain and create positive emotions at Meditations for Emotional Intelligence on Saturday, Nov. 25 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

to synthesize vitamin D from sunlight. Vitamin D also needs to be activated in the kidney before it can be used by the body and this function also decreases with age. Finally, elderly people who are homebound are less likely to get outdoor exercise and activity. Years ago doctors were mainly concerned about vitamin D deficiency in children. Foods were fortified with vitamin D to prevent the bone disease called rickets. Now we know that rickets was only the tip of the iceberg and that seniors are also at high risk for vitamin D deficiency. According to a recent study in the journal Age and Ageing, vitamin D deficiency may contribute to osteoporosis, muscle weakness, hip fractures, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, arthritis and poor general health in seniors.
The bulbs we use at Hawaiian Beach help to activate Vitamin D. Visit us today.
Why Are Seniors at Risk? People over age 50 have an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency and the risk increases with age. As people age they lose some of their ability

How Much Vitamin D Do You Need? You need more vitamin D as you get older. According to the Food and Nutrition Board at the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies, an adequate intake of vitamin D up until age 50 is 1,000 - 2,000 International Units (IU) for both men and women. Between age 50 and 70 the adequate daily intake is 3,000 IU for men and women. After age 70 the adequate intake is 4,000 IU for men and women.

Move Well Feel Well "Pilates has changed my life in EVERY aspect. Physically, there are no words to describe it. I came in on crutches, unable to go up steps or walk for than 200 feet. Now I am hiking and will even try skiing again. Emotionally I am grounded, my hormones are balanced, my outlook is full of color and my desire to enjoy has returned. There is not one day I have not enjoyed my time doing Pilates. I find myself sitting at work getting excited about being there. To find an 'exercise' program based on movement—no pain—has been the true gift." Kerry Cuthbert

The family event, presented by the Ladner Business Association, runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 23 at the corner of 48th Avenue and Delta Street. This year’s event promises lots of fun for everyone and is the perfect way to get in the Christmas spirit and share in the joy of the season with the whole community. “The festival is about family traditions and bringing the community together to kick off the Christmas season,” said LBA acting president Jill McKnight. McKnight said they are planning several new kids’ activities along with several of the favourties from last year including gingerbread cookie decorating, colouring contest and the letters to Santa.
Letters to Santa can be dropped off in the special mailbox set up just for the festival and children can also pen their letters to Santa that night. All letters will be sent directly to Santa at the North Pole. Tony Barton, who took part in year one of the festival is back as this year’s musical guest. There is also a gingerbread house contest in which the public will choose the winner. “Various businesses have been working very hard to come up with some great looking gingerbread houses,” said McKnight. “This has become a highlight event and a bit of a fun rivalry between the businesses, but all in good spirit. We have all been kind of ribbing each other and having some fun with it. I know some of the businesses started creating their houses three weeks ago, so there is a vested
interest and the more votes the more exciting it is for the businesses.” The winner of the contest will be chosen that night based on the highest number of votes from the public. The festival will end with the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree at 7:15 p.m. with Santa’s arrival just minutes before. “Last year, despite a heavy downpour, we estimated about 1,200 people. Our hope this year is that we hit 2,000 people,” added McKnight. “The idea is that we are trying to give multiple experiences to everyone who attends. We are all really excited to welcome the community to this year’s festival.”

Playoff thriller had SDSS flavour Hardy Cup final featured a handful of Sun Devil Football alumni in action There was plenty of “Sun Devil” flavour in a game that will go down as one of the greatest in the history of Canadian university football. A trio of South Delta graduates helped the University of Calgary Dinos capture their second consecutive Hardy Cup with a stunning 44-43 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds last Saturday at McMahon Stadium. Running back Jack McDonald and linebackers Blake Gau and Charlie Moore all contributed to the thrilling win that saw Niko DiFonte hit a record 59-yard field goal on the game’s final play. McDonald was a valuable blocker as the Dinos rolled up 533 yards of offense, Gau was instrumental on defense and Moore on special teams. “All three players come from a program that develops hard-working players that are use to winning. All of them came here (Calgary) to compete for playing time from day one,” stated Defensive and Recruiting Coordinator Matt Berry. “Blake (Gau) has started some games for us and has played well. When he has not started, he has played well in situations he has been in for. Gau dressed for all but one conference game recording 10 tackles in regular season contests. McDonald, whose father Bruce attended Saturday’s game, has been the starting fullback for the Dinos except for missing two games early in the season due to injury. He recorded three receptions for 26 yards including a key touchdown in Calgary’s win earlier in the year at UBC. “Jack (McDonald) brings great intensity to the field both on offense and on special teams,” Berry stated. Moore, now his second season with the
Sun Devils assistant coach Bruce McDonald with alumni players Blake Gau (right) and his son Jack after Calgary’s thrilling 44-43 win over UBC last Saturday in the Hardy Cup final. Dinos after “red-shirting” last season, has carved out an impressive niche of special teams recording 10 tackles in six Conference games. The Thunderbirds’ line-up includes SDSS grad Ryan von Ende who was a standout on the offensive line. He helped pave the way for Ben Cummings to rush for 141 yards and Michael O’Connor to throw for 357 yards and
five touchdowns in the back-and-forth battle. UBC’s roster also features first-year linebacker Michael Mann and offensive lineman David Edwards. All six SDSS grads helped the Sun Devils win the provincial AAA championship in 2014. The Dinos now host the Laval Rouge et Or in the Mitchell Bowl Final. The winner advances to the Vanier Cup.
Sun Devils take on Panthers at B.C. Place Stadium MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
At this stage of the B.C. High School Football season there are no secrets. The South Delta Sun Devils know exactly what they have to do to take their 2017 campaign beyond this weekend. The Sun Devils head to B.C. Place Stadium for a Saturday afternoon (2:30 p.m.) provincial “AAA” quarter-final tilt with the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers knowing their two areas of greatest concern are in for a big test. South Delta advanced to the final eight with a 37-0 wild card win over Mission. The result came on the heels of consecutive losses to close out conference play that showed the Devils can be vulnerable against the run. Now they face the top back in the province — Eastern Conference Offensive MVP Derek Best — who averaged 130 yards a game and nearly
11 yards per carry. “They have a pretty good second runner too with Braeden Hutchinson,” said Sun Devils head coach Ray Moon. “The one thing is they do a lot of the same stuff that we do on offence with four receiver sets.” The big difference between the two teams is the Panthers load up their receivers to take defenders out of the box. The Cloverdale school attempted just over 10 passes per game in conference play. The Sun Devils will have to walk the fine line of respecting the pass yet not allow gaping run lanes. “We changed some things up for the Mission game and it seemed to work better in stopping the run,” continued Moon. “How well we do on first and second down is going to be a real key for us.” The Sun Devils believe their passing game can have some success but that’s only if quarterback Michael Calvert has time to look down
field. That rarely happened in losses to Seaquam and New West as both defences pinned their ears back and came after the Western Conference Offensive MVP. South Delta’s offensive line has been a work in progress all season. Four starters from last year’s team were lost to graduation. Injuries also have been a factor since week one. “They are going to be coming after us with plenty of blitzing and pressure. We have to give Michael some time to throw the ball. If he does, we can be successful,” added Moon. The win over Mission saw Calvert complete 18 of 20 passes for 226 yards, including a pair of TD tosses to Max Stalling. He also ran 70-yards for another major. A healthy Ben McDonald also saw time at quarterback, connecting with Doug Jameson for a 65-yard score. He also caught five passes for 90 yards.

Stars shine at Burnaby tourney
The Delta Stars Atom girls hockey team went undefeated (5-0-0) to capture gold at the Female Remembrance Day Tournament hosted by the Burnaby Wildcats this past weekend. Out of the gate, South Delta came on strong with a 4-2 win over rival Vancouver. The next round robin games were decisive victories over North Shore (5-1), Chilliwack (5-2) and host Burnaby (9-0). The championship matchup had South Delta and Vancouver sparring again with lots of exciting back-and-forth action. The Stars would not be denied — winning 2-1. Leading the way in the offensive zone were centres Alaniya Johal, Bella Gewall
and Olivia Vance, along with wingers Katie Willford, Reese Bruckshaw, Janelle Gosnell, and Kylie Kamiya. On defense, Kayli Basson, Danielle Bilodeau, Sage Heiner, Haeley Keen, and Rachael Pugsley kept the other teams out of the Stars end. Goaltenders Ryan Assaly, Emily MacDonad and Emma Macey stood on their heads between the pipes and kept the goals against to just six over the five games. The coaching staff — led by head coach Jacqueline Hamlin — is extremely proud of the team effort given by the players to obtain their objective not only with the win but to have fun while doing it.

Sockeyes hand Ice Hawks rare defeat Richmond evens inaugural Tunnel Cup rivalry series at 1-1 with 3-0 victory in Ladner Tuesday MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It’s officially game on in the inaugural Tunnel Cup rivalry series. The Richmond Sockeyes produced their biggest win of the season Tuesday night in Ladner — handing the high-flying Delta Ice Hawks a rare 3-0 loss. The Pacific Junior Hockey League cross-river rivals have now split a pair of regular season meetings with two more to go. More importantly for the Sockeyes, they showed exactly what they are capable of. A loss would have left Richmond (11-5-1-2) a whopping 15 points back of Delta (18-2-0-0) in the Tom Shaw Conference standings and made the end result of the season series and near formality. “If we didn’t win this game there is no rivalry to be honest,” said Sockeyes head coach Steve Robinson. “The way the season is shaping up how can you even say there is a rivalry when there really isn’t one? One of the messages before the game was there is nothing you should be chirping to these guys about. They
have earned our respect and we give them respect. “Five games can be a fluke. Ten games can be fluke but 19 games with that kind of goal differential ain’t no fluke. They are a great team.” The Sockeyes answered the bell with their most complete game of the season. They rode the goaltending of Hardy Hoonjan to kill off an early Delta two-man advantage then opened the scoring when Connor Kavanagh converted a two-on-one break. Much of the game was played with either team shorthanded — with 17 power plays in total — and it was the visitors who finally converted their chances with late second period goals from Brett Gelz and Arjun Badh. Both of Delta’s losses this season have come after winning nine straight. They looked somewhat vulnerable in close victories over Ridge Meadows and Aldergrove last week. Now they will look to regroup and get their offence clicking again. For the first time, they missed the presence of Jonathan Stein in the line-up. The team’s lead-

Bourhill who remains sidelined with a leg injury. The rookie had nine goals in 12 games before being hurt.
Delta travels to Mission on Saturday night and return home Tuesday to host Aldergrove at 7:35 p.m.
