A Delta man has entered a not guilty plea to two counts of trafficking of a controlled substance in connection with a high-profile South Delta fentanyl overdose case last year. On Tuesday, 21-year-old Delta resident Daniel Chun Chesshire entered the not guilty plea during his third appearance in Surrey provincial court. He also elected a trial by judge and jury with a preliminary hearing. The preliminary hearing, which will determine whether there is enough evidence to go to trial, has been set for five days beginning Sept. 10, 2018 in Surrey provincial court. Chesshire’s lawyer, Garry MacDonald, told the Optimist the court had earlier dates in August, but that many of the Delta police witnesses were on vacation and unavailable. Delta police initially arrested Chesshire, but released him pending further investigation. He was then issued a summons to appear in court following that investigation when the charges were formally laid in early September. In September of 2016, within a 20-minute span, police received reports of overdoses from four separate locations in South Delta involving nine young adults. In each case, the victims reported respiratory problems, including one person in full cardiac arrest. Delta firefighters and paramedics attended the four scenes and used Narcan on eight of the nine overdose victims, all of whom survived.

Minister gets military award Jim Short receives honour from governor general during Ottawa ceremony IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Jim Short’s distinguished military reserve career was recognized earlier this month in Ottawa when he was presented with the Order of Military Merit. Short, who retired in July after 26 years with the Reserve Force in the Canadian Armed Forces Chaplain’s Branch, was presented with the award by Governor General Julie Payette at the official investiture ceremony at Rideau Hall on Nov. 10. The governor general bestowed the honour on two commanders, seven officers and 36 members. “It’s a great honour. The award is the military’s equivalent to the Order of Canada,” said Short. “It’s unusual for a reserve chaplain to be appointed. There are not a lot of military chaplains that have received the Order of Military Merit, so it’s a pretty amazing thing.” Short said the ceremony was full of pomp and circumstance. “You get treated very nice and they thank you for your service,” he said. “There are all these senior officers there and, of course, they are there for you. Usually when senior officers come we are there for them. “It’s quite the process. Your nomination goes through four or five vettings and eventually gets

Governor General Julie Payette presents the Member insignia of Order of Military Merit to Maj. Rev. Jim Short. to the Chief of Defence staff and the Governor General’s Office. I was surprised. It was a lovely time to be in Ottawa because it was right before Remembrance Day.” Short was commissioned into the Reserve Force in 1991. His military reserve career was spent mostly in B.C., but one of his most notable calls for service

was a year-long deployment in Afghanistan. During this deployment he initiated and dedicated himself, along with a team of volunteer Canadian soldiers and civilians on the home front, to support education for Afghani children and the needs of their teachers through a project that provided learning materials to a school in Kandahar, then

an orphanage in Kabul. “Most of us are just your average military men who just tried to do the best they could and never thought they would become a member of the Order of Military Merit,” said Short. “I don’t tend to think of myself as anyone special. I really enjoyed my military career, but I suppose I could look at some of the things that I was a

part of, but then again, so were other people. And the thing is, they never tell you why you were chosen, they just say you didn’t get here by fluke or by accident. “There was obviously people who thought enough of my efforts. It was a humbling experience. It’s a lovely medal and I’m honoured to have it.”

Imaging and lab facilities at capacity for over six years CONTINUED from Page 1 The hospital’s medical imaging and laboratory medicine departments have been operating at full capacity for more than six years and the need for their services has grown exponentially. Because of the space and equipment limitations, it has meant longer wait times for processing samples, test results and, in the end, patient treatment. The addition will consolidate these specialized areas into a single, two-storey space. Medical imaging will occupy the first level, enabling 55,700

procedures annually, up from 42,900. Lab medicine on the second level will enable units processed to increase from 1.2 million to 1.7 million. Hospital executive director Teresa O’Callaghan said without a proper imaging and lab wing, a hospital can’t truly be a hospital. Originally estimated as a $12.5-million project before jumping to $15.2 million after tenders, the foundation, which is changing its name to the Delta Hospital and Community Care Foundation, fundraised

$7.5 million, including a sizable donation from the Delta Hospital Auxiliary. Also contributing were many community groups, businesses and individuals, including $2.5 million from the Toigo family. At yesterday’s celebration, Ron Toigo noted how the community has continually supported the hospital, including rallying in 2002 to prevent deep cuts. Jim Sinclair, Fraser Health’s board chair, echoes those comments. “We might not have been here today. We’re going to call this the peo-

ple’s hospital because the people of this community had to decide whether they wanted a hospital in 2002. They made the choice they wanted to keep the hospital and they went out and collectively fought to keep it,” said Sinclair. Foundation board chair Randy Kaardal and executive director Lisa Hoglund both thanked the Toigo family as well as the many generous donations from the community. Scheduled for occupancy by October 2019, the new diagnostic services building is the first phase

of the hospital’s master plan that sets a vision for the next couple of decades. A new residential care facility to replace Mountain View Manor, which opened in 1980, is the second phase of the master plan. The foundation is working with Fraser Health to develop a business case for the project that will be submitted to the provincial government for approval. Other potential changes to the hospital in the longterm include a new mental health unit and additional acute beds.

Berm to offer year-round protection Delta bolsters floodproofing measures in Boundary Bay after discussions with area residents SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Boundary Bay has a new year-round flood protection berm. Recently completed, it’s part of a series of projects to protect the community. Engineering staff provided Delta council with an update Monday on Delta’s annual flood protection measures, including the year-round sand berm that was constructed after civic staff met with residents to discuss options. “The year-round sand berm was presented as a cost effective, more natural looking, less disruptive option and was accepted by all impacted residents,” a report states. During the winter, areas of Boundary Bay and Beach Grove are prone to localized flooding, especially when high tides and strong winds combine to create a perfect storm. It’s an occurrence that resulted in wide-spread flooding in 2006. The report notes this December will mark the

Other flood protection works recently completed include the 16th Avenue beach access and all beach

access points south of 4th Avenue being secured with temporary concrete blocks and/or sandbags. Temporary flood protection works against foreshore wave impacts have been carried out since the 1970s, including

constructing a berm annually fronting a number of private properties in the 200-block of Centennial Parkway where no seawall exists. Last year, the sand berm was also extended north to the 300-block of Centennial Parkway due to

flooding in the spring. The cost of erecting the sand berm and associated works, including disassembly, was $50,000 annually. Engineering director Steven Lan told council last December that his

department had looked at the possibility of leaving a berm in place after the flood season. He noted new home construction has a requirement for a seawall to be 4.1 metres in height, but there is no such requirement for older homes. “The waterfront homes are the first line of defence and they offer a tremendous benefit for the entire community because if flood waters get past those homes, they will inundate the properties behind them,” he told council at the time. An engineering report to council earlier in the year recommended waterfront property owners in Boundary Bay and Beach Grove be required at the time of redevelopment to either raise their seawalls to current standards or provide an equivalent cash contribution. That report noted longer term challenges associated with sea level rise and community protection require a comprehensive strategy supported by the community.

Liberal leadership hopeful Todd Stone visited party faithful at Delta South MLA Ian Paton’s East Ladner farm last Friday, unveiling a platform to promote the agricultural sector. Paton, who is endorsing Stone, provided input on the platform. Stone said the party needs to get more young people, women and diversity within its ranks. He also noted the party’s message on job creation throughout the province during the last election campaign didn’t resonate in the Lower Mainland, where the issues people are talking about are different. Also campaigning for the leadership are former Surrey mayor and Conservative MP Dianne Watts, and MLAs Andrew Wilkinson, Michael Lee, Sam Sullivan and Mike de Jong. The vote will take place between Feb. 1 and 3.

Double-decker bus to have trial run on 601

TransLink looks to add capacity on hwy. routes IAN JACQUES

Transit riders will get a chance to test out doubledecker buses starting today in South Delta. According to TransLink senior media relations advisor Chris Bryan, one of two double-decker buses that is part of a pilot project will be in service on the 351 and 601 routes. Bryan said the bus will leave the Richmond Transit Centre garage at 4:29 a.m. Friday and each morning for the following week. It will complete three trips on the 351 route and then switch to the 601 route (Bridgeport Station/ South Delta/Boundary Bay). The other bus will be on routes that cover stops in Langley, Surrey and White Rock. The pilot project is a way to test double-decker buses on long-distance commuter routes. The two buses were

The double-decker buses can seat 80 to 86 passengers, up to 83 per cent more than the older highway coaches, and have double the overall capacity. The pilot program will allow TransLink to see how double-decker buses fare in the Lower Mainland, both from a customer experience and operational standpoint, and to evaluate bus depot requirements. “We’re preparing for

1.2 million more people in our region over the next 30 years. With growing suburban demand in communities south of the Fraser River, we are looking at new ways to ensure that transit is an attractive option for commuters,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond. “Double-decker buses have worked well in other cities, including nearby Victoria, and I have personal experience with buses like these in Seattle where they worked very well. I’m confident they’ll work well here too.”

The proposal submitted to city hall by Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Ltd. calls for up to 600 slot machines and 24 gaming tables, which would make it a decent size facility but substantially smaller than places like the River Rock or Grand Villa that feature over 1,000 slots. Even though it would be one of the smaller casinos in the Lower Mainland, the proposal for the Delta Town & Country Inn site could still prove to be a windfall for the City of Delta given host local governments receive 10 per cent of net casino gaming revenues. There are no exact figures at this time, but if you look at the size of Greater Vancouver casinos and the revenues they produce for their local governments, it’s easy enough to see where Delta would fit in. We’re not going to see the almost $17 million Richmond received from the River Rock or the nearly $11 million Burnaby got from the Grand Villa in the last fiscal year, but rather Delta is likely to slot in somewhere between the $4 million Elements generated for Surrey and the $7 million Cascades poured into Langley’s coffers. I’m thinking $5 million is a pretty good ballpark figure. Given Delta has been loath to use found money (think surpluses or port amenity funding) to cover operational expenses due to the uncertainty of such revenue streams, you can safely bet that any casino money would be directed toward capital projects. Five million bucks every year would go a long way to help build a fire hall or turf field or arts centre, lessening, or removing altogether, that burden on taxpayers. That’s not to say a casino is in the bag, but given the financial rewards at stake here, and the fact that both Gateway and the B.C. Lottery Corporation have agreed to locate it at the only site Delta deemed suitable, it’s difficult for me to see it being defeated. Delta is coming to the table late, but it looks like civic officials finally want a piece of what their regional colleagues have long enjoyed.

It’s worth spending time and money to review the bridge

W

hether you are for or against a new bridge across the Fraser River, two things are certainly clear: we need a traffic solution and Delta council has spent too much money trying to convince us that a $3.5-billion bridge is the best thing for our community. For better or worse, the project is now in the hands of Stan Cowdell, who is leading an independent technical review of the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project. His job is to “review the technical assumptions and analysis for the tunnel and bridge options. As part of this, he will review the technical information already produced for the project and challenge or verify the assumptions made out of that work.” Despite an expected completion date next spring and a price tag under $1 million, opponents like Delta South MLA/Delta Coun. Ian Paton are calling the review “redundant and costly.” There is an inherent contradiction in his opinion considering that Delta council recommended that “the new B.C. government should be afforded the opportunity to make its own informed assessment of the alternative options regarding the George Massey Tunnel replacement.” This also leads me to ques-

Community Comment NICHOLAS WONG

tion why Delta taxpayer money is being spent by the city to convince the public that a bridge is the best option while the new government is reviewing the project. Delta council has said this is what it wanted. Bridge proponents often claim that you cannot deny the 14,000 pages of reports that have been produced. However, many of their claims bear further scrutiny as the extent of misinformation the BC Liberal Party stated as fact in the previous administration is coming to light. After getting ICBC’s deficit wrong by $989 million (on top of plundering $1.1 billion to balance the budget), redefining “debtfree” and “on time and under budget” and returning freedom of information requests with heavily redacted information to hide $8 billion in financing costs, it is difficult to believe the BC Liberal

Party did its due diligence in reviewing its bridge. Former transportation minister Todd Stone defended the financing by saying the NDP has a “fundamental lack of understanding of how financing works.” On the other hand, economics and public administration professors at two universities state “the government has yet to release a proper cost-benefit analysis for the project” being the appropriate method of assessment. Many of the project’s claims are not independently verified. The project’s “business case” claims it will “provide more than a 35 per cent decrease in the frequency of collisions.” Unfortunately, that number comes from a 2014 Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure report, so this is an example of a ministry justifying its own project using internal, unverified documents. A review into the intentions and process of this project is absolutely necessary. For $1 million and a few months’ delay, our government can determine what evidence there actually is for the project. The truth matters and more information will not damage it. We should seek the truth. Community advocate Nicholas Wong ran as an independent candidate in Delta South in May’s provincial election. He finished second with more than 6,400 votes.

Thrift store does so much for community

Editor: Just a quick note to thank you for your recent story on Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society and their most recent contribution to Delta Hospital. It is wonderful to see this hardworking group of people often taken for granted recognized for all they do. My husband and I have been customers for years and have always marvelled at the amazing people who work so tirelessly to create what we feel is the best thrift store in the Lower Mainland.

To see yet another valuable medical instrument made available to the hospital due to their efforts shows how important their store and staff are to the community. Their efforts and huge financial contribution for medical equipment over the years has undoubtedly saved many lives and they are truly unsung heroes. While there are many great volunteers, I am writing to recognize one who saved a man’s life one afternoon a few months ago right in the

store. The elderly customer who passed out then stopped breathing was very fortunate that “Trev” and a customer were able to resuscitate him before the ambulance arrived. They both went above and beyond the call of duty in acting so quickly to save his life and it is probably because of their immediate help that the gentleman survived. I once saw this same volunteer take money out of his own pocket to buy a low income senior a leash

for her dog at the store when her leash broke, and it is obvious that he takes pride in working with this team, helping others and loves what he does. He is always quick with a smile, cordial, polite, friendly and always the first one to offer help to anybody who needs it. It is because of volunteers like him that the store is such a one of a kind shopping experience and is able to help Delta Hospital to the extent it does with such loyal support from the community.

I am happy to say that we will be bringing more Christmas decorations (bought from the Christmas Store on opening day) with us to Mexico as we do every year when we depart for our vacation so we can bring a little bit of “home” along with us for the holidays, and look forward to our next “treasure hunt” when we return. Wishing all the staff and volunteers at Delta Hospital Thrift Store a very Merry Christmas and continued success in 2018. M. Andersen

Editor: Others have assembled valid and convincing arguments for the replacement of the Geroge Massey Tunnel with a bridge. This letter is to add my personal thoughts in support of the replacement. Firstly, my neighbours have occasionally expressed the concern that removing the tunnel would permit the passage

of larger vessels. I find this argument strange as the tunnel is buried below the river bottom at a location that is not the shallowest part of the river. Moreover, the size of vessels is limited by the river width as well as its depth. Secondly, I recall a conversation with Gordon Shrum when he had just assumed responsibility

for completion of the new Vancouver courthouse after it had run into financial difficulties. Previously, shortage of funds had led to a decision to remove the top floor from the plans. This had resulted in an increase in costs, and Shrum told me that the most important lesson he had learned from the experience was that it was very expensive

to make any change in completed plans. His success in building the courthouse and Simon Fraser University persuade me to respect his opinions. Finally, as a retired professional geoscientist and a former member of the Council of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists, I have had occasion to talk with engineers about the tun-

nel. At that time (about 25 years ago), I learned that the tunnel was reaching its expected lifetime, and that bringing it up to acceptable standards would be difficult. I believe these considerations are valid but, in any case, I hope that decisions are based on sound engineering advice and not on political expediency. Don Russell

Dog ruins peaceful walk on beach

Editor: Last weekend I was down in Boundary Bay walking on the beach when an aggressive offleash dog came at me. The owner was too far back and did call to her dog. After my encounter the dog also went towards an older couple just sitting in chairs enjoying the

great weather. Please people, if you know your dog has these tendencies, keep them on a leash. This lady knew her dog did this and still let her run free. It ruined my nice peaceful walk by the water. M. Latham

Liberals hold hands of returning terrorists

Editor: In light of Justin Trudeau’s Liberals’ reassuring comments in the House of Commons, with respect to the 60 or so returning terrorists who departed Canada to kill others, the Liberals have launched the new Canada Centre for Community Engagement and

Prevention of Violence to help jihadists “let go of their terrorist ideology.” There, now all of Canada can sleep easy knowing the Ottawa Liberals are holding the hands of the killers and whispering in their ears and telling them not to be naughty ever again. Wow! Now why didn’t

we all think of that before — such an easy way to change the mindset of hardened, well-trained and well-focused killers? Now, perhaps the fairy tales will end and all will be walking along a bright, red brick road to see the wizard behind the screen at 24 Sussex Drive. Bob Orrick

Turn off the negativity

Editor: I attended another funeral last week (seems to happen more frequently as I get older) for a wonderful Ladner resident who epitomized what a “good life” is. Cancer took him far too early, but his steadfast kindness, honour and respect reminded me that the world can be a good place with a positive future. It put me onto a tangent…. It’s easy to get caught up in the brain rotting damage being caused by U.S. President Donald Trump and his ilk so that we forget that life is worth living and that each of us can have a profound impact at a personal level. Our best response to the narcissistic vanity of a Facebook or Twitter world is to treat people as we wish to be treated. People no longer appear to understand the difference between truth and lies, or worse, they don’t care. Responsible media is castigated as “fake news” and Twitter trolls are equated to ethical journalists in an insane world of short attention span sound bites. I’m still frustrated; but I’m more optimistic. Try turning it off — reacting only encourages the foolishness. Peter Dandyk

These crisis line phones are the result of a collaborative effort,” he added. At a recent Delta police board meeting, Dubord said within a week of the phones being installed, a person utilized one of them. “Five days after the phones went live someone picked up the phone and asked for help and we picked him up off the centre of the bridge,” said Dubord. Earlier this year, Dubord, along with New Westminster police Chief Dave Jones, began to lobby for suicide prevention barriers, but also for more front-line mental health

support. The ministry determined the Alex Fraser Bridge was not structurally sound enough for the barriers, but looked at the crisis phones instead. “More front-line mental health support is what is really needed and we as police chiefs will continue to lobby and support that,” said Dubord. He said the lobbying effort was started due to an increase in Delta police officers being called to the Alex Fraser Bridge. “Our officers are at risk, the motoring public are at risk and, of course, the person who is on the bridge certainly needs support,” he said. “In addition, we are working really hard with Fraser Health and with Deltassist to be able to look at ways we can hope-

fully be proactive and get involved early with people in crisis.” The Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of BC says it would like to see the installation of suicide prevention barriers on the Burrard, Granville, Ironworkers, Lions Gate and Pattullo bridges as recommended by the BC Coroner’s Service in 2008. These sites accounted for 50 per cent of suicide deaths from jumping between 1991 and 2007. The Fraser Health Crisis Line provides immediate, free, and confidential emotional support, crisis intervention and community resource information to people of all ages 24 hours a day. Betty Husband celebrates 90 years on Westham Isl.

Family matriarch says not a lot has changed ADRIAN MACNAIR

O p t i m i s t p h o t o g ra p h e r

Not a whole lot has changed on Westham Island since Betty Husband was born in Ladner on Nov. 14, 1927. The technology has improved, and the roads are paved, but most of the farmland that existed back then is still in active duty. “It’s changed a bit with the vegetable stands and the winery, more houses, but it’s all been preserved farmland,” says Husband, who was surrounded by three of her four children at Fisherman’s Hall last Saturday for a 90th birthday celebration. The matriarch of the Husband family still lives on the tiny farming island where she was born and raised. She lives on Emma Lea Farms, which is run by her son Kevin Husband along with his wife Joanne and other members of the family.

What she cherishes most is the quiet and serenity, interrupted only by the sounds of birds passing overhead. “I live down where the Westham Island refuge is and every morning I can hear the snow geese going over the house. And you see pheasants out in the front yard and the wild birds.” Born into a third generation farming family, Betty Tamboline’s grandparents were Italian immigrants and built one of the first homes on Westham Island in 1885. A road bearing their name still exists on the island today. She met her husband (literally and figuratively), Robert Husband, in her late teens. The two married on June 27, 1947. Seven years later, they purchased her grandparents’ farm, which the family has been running ever since. Robert and Betty raised award-winning dairy cat-

tle as well as grew hay, potatoes, peas, sugar beet, beans and corn. In 1994 the couple was awarded the BC Century Farm and Ranch Award for continuous operation of Emma Lea Farms for 100 years. The couple had four children (Kevin, Bill, Pam and Louise), 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Robert passed away in 2010. In an age where it seems nobody stays in one place for very long, Husband’s 90 years on Westham Island is remarkable. She says she’s “glad to be out in the open” with the “wonderful farmland.” “I wouldn’t go anywhere else because I wouldn’t like it with all these new high-rises and homes.” She has more to say — a lifetime of stories — but there are 100 people waiting inside Fisherman’s Hall to sing Happy Birthday and watch her blow out 90 candles.

2017 Delta Hospice Society Annual Appeal

End-of-life Care is Everybody’s Responsibility Dear Friends of Hospice, Hospice doesn’t cure a person’s disease, but it certainly can offer healing. This healing has been able to happen in a new way, with the opening of the Irene Thomas Hospice and the Harold & Veronica Savage Centre for Supportive Care in Ladner, seven years ago. Since that time, we have been able to offer patients and their families an unprecedented level of care - none of which would have been possible without the support of our local community partners and donors that believe in the relief of suffering in living, in dying and in grieving. The Society has been a symbol of hope and comfort over the years as it cares for people from the time of diagnosis of cancer or other life-threatening illness and follows families throughout their journey of illness, wellness, recurrence, end-of-life and bereavement. Delta Hospice is one of 4 hospice societies in British Columbia that operates a hospice residence and it has a unique centre for supportive care to support people living at home. Being a small not-for-profit has allowed us to be true to our culture and values and continue to offer unparalleled care despite the cost, but it requires a commitment from our community to help us maintain this level of quality and care. “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” Mother Theresa

KidSport Delta believes financial challenges shouldn’t prevent children from playing sports. Applications are now being accepted by the local chapter. “We have the funds to help,” said KidSport Delta chair Carlene Lewall. KidSport Delta can give each child $350 per calendar year. “This could be for a sport a child is already registered in but it was a struggle for the parents to pay the registration or a sport they are registering for that starts in January,” added Lewall. “If they register now for KidSport we can process in 2017, allowing them to apply again in 2018.” The sport must have a provincial organization, which would include soccer, baseball, football, gymnastics, hockey, swimming, basketball and more. Application forms can be downloaded from www.kidsportcanada.ca/ delta. Anyone can sponsor the child as it does not have to be the parent. Financial records do not have to be submitted, only a signature by a financial adjudicator, a professional that knows the child and family. “Sport has been by far the most important aspect of my entire life as it kept me active and healthy and given me a platform to

Carlene Lewall have fun and meet people from around the world,” said KidSport spokesperson and Team Canada field hockey player Mark Pearson. “Sport has also helped me develop as an individual by teaching me life skills like team work and goal setting that are invaluable outside of sport. These life lessons, learnings and friendships are where the true value of sport lies and I’m honoured to be an ambassador for an organization like Kidsport which looks to give kids the gift of sport!” KidSport was established by Sport BC in 1993 and is a community-based sport charity. KidSport Delta was formed in 2010 after a boost in sport from the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games and began giving out grants for sport registration fees in 2012. Money is raised locally thanks to generous partners, sponsors and donors. For more information, email kidsportdelta@ gmail.com or call 604-9430469.

The Story: The Trials of the King

On Sunday, Nov. 5, a gunman walked into a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, killed at least 26, including an unborn baby, and wounded at least 20 more. Within days, my email inbox included multiple links to articles on how to keep your church safe. Some churches have a rotation of congregants who bring concealed weapons to church services. One church in Florida posts a large sign warning they are heavily armed and any threat will be met with deadly force. As a pastor I get it. It would be an unspeakable tragedy to have that kind of attack on your congregation with no way to defend themselves. On

Minister’s Minute

the other hand, there is something oddly incongruous about having guns in church. Perhaps a broader question is whether as people of faith we should expect to be safe. After all, our founder was martyred and the universal symbol

up to 50% OFF

of Christianity is a cross. Jesus himself warned us: “16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. 17 Everyone will hate you because of me. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. 19 Stand firm, and you will win life.” (Luke 21:16–19, NIV) So back to the question: Is faith safe? The answer is yes and no. In this life, faith may actually be dangerous. The tragedy in Texas is a sobering reminder of what our brothers and sisters in many places face every day. However, if you look beyond this life, faith is the only safety. “Stand firm, and you will win life.”

elta Youth Theatre is bringing Annie Jr. to the Genesis Theatre stage next week. After holding its first few productions in Vancouver, Annie Jr. marks the theatre group’s first time staging a show at the recently seismically upgraded Ladner venue. “The Metro Theatre was a wonderful venue for our

first three productions but we always wanted DYT’s home to be in Delta,” says company artistic director Tony Barton. He calls Genesis a good fit, especially seeing how the company has grown. Annie Jr. features the talent of over 90 singers/actors/ dancers ranging in age from nine to 20. The production is made up of four different casts. “Not one cast is better than the other. They all have different strengths and they all have moments

in the show that shine in different places,” says Barton. The musical takes place in New York City in the 1930s and tells the rags to riches story of a young orphan interspersed with songs like Tomorrow, Maybe, I Don’t Need Anything But You and Little Girls. An early 1980s film starring Carol Burnett, Albert Finney and Bernadette Peters followed the success of the Broadway musical which debuted in

the late 1970s. Choreographer and music director Tracy Neff says the story “definitely stands the test of time.” Opening night will see professional actor and Tsawwassen resident Neal McDonough play the role of Daddy Warbucks. He’ll be joining two of his kids who are cast members, Catherine and Morgan, on stage. “I can’t wait to jump on stage and hang out with not just my kids, but to see what… Tony and Tracy

have created with the sets and the music and the choreography and everything else,” he says. McDonough says it’s great to see the enthusiasm of the play’s young actors while Barton notes it’s incredibly valuable to the cast to work with a professional. Annie Jr. runs from Wednesday, Nov. 29 to Sunday, Dec. 3 at Genesis Theatre, 5005-45th Ave. Tickets ($23 or $25) are available from www.deltayouththeatre.com.

Lorne Koroluk is sharing photos from a long-awaited holiday to Newfoundland with an exhibit at the Ladner Pioneer Library. “This was a bucket list trip,” he says, noting he and his wife Barbara travelled to the Maritime province in June. It was in their plans to visit for many years, says the 77-yearold. The show includes pictures of icebergs, puffins and lighthouses. “Wherever I go, I love shooting pictures,” he says. He captured the images with a

brand new camera. “I was learning how to use it on the trip,” he says with a laugh, “but it worked out.” Koroluk, who’s retired from the UBC faculty of education, splits his time between Ladner and Saturna Island. His show also includes images of butterflies, taken locally as well as at a butterfly centre in Arizona. The exhibit runs until the end of December.

Sweet time at Christmas Market!

Crowds filled the Harris Barn in Ladner last Saturday for the third annual Shop Sweet Christmas Market in support of BC Children’s Hospital.

Local professional photographer Greg Schurman will be representing Canada at the 2018 World Photographic Cup. His image, titled Corporate Spiral, was among the top three in the commercial category of a national competition. “It’s a true honour to be able to represent Canada in the international photo imaging competition. It’s like the Olympics of photography,” says Schurman, “and I’m going for gold.”

ChristmasSafety Tree Today, families are struggling with nowhere to turn.

As you deck the halls this holiday season, be fire smart. A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly. PICKING THE TREE • Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. PLACING THE TREE • Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2” from the base of the trunk. • Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. • Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit. • Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily. LIGHTING THE TREE • Use lights that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use. • Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect. • Never use lit candles to decorate the tree. • Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.

Get rid of the tree after Christmas or when it is dry. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home. Check with your local community to find a recycling program. Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer.

South Delta’s Billy Matwichyna battles through several Lord Tweedsmuir defenders following one of several catches the Grade 12 receiver made during the Sun Devils’ 25-17 quarterfinal win last Saturday at BC Place.

Sun Devils get their rematch

South Delta faces New West in AAA semifinal after getting past Lord Tweedsmuir IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Revenge is a dish best served cold and the South Delta Sun Devils are hoping to serve that dish to New Westminster on a silver platter tomorrow night at BC Place. Following a 63-16 drubbing at the hands of the Hyacks in their final league game earlier this month, the Sun Devils were hoping the stars would align in the Subway Bowl playoffs and they would get another crack at the No. 1 ranked team. Thanks to a 25-17 quarterfinal win over the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers last weekend, and New West’s 19-14 win over Mt. Douglas, South Delta gets that chance at 5 p.m. tomorrow. “That result was a rallying cry,” said Sun Devils head coach Ray Moon. “We know we didn’t play

well and then some of the things that happened on the field got under our skin to the point that there is no way we are going to take this. We want a shot at them again.” Moon said he felt they had a solid game plan in place for that Nov. 3 contest, but the team didn’t execute and as a result got destroyed. “We will tear every single frame of New West’s entire year apart and come out with a better game plan and come out on fire. I know the kids want it and want it bad. That’s all the kids have been talking about the past three weeks,” Moon said. In the quarterfinal win over Tweedsmuir, South Delta jumped out to a fast start. Quarterback Michael Calvert hit Ben McDonald for a two-yard score capping a 65-yard opening drive. Following a missed

two-pointer, SDSS went up 6-0. The Sun Devils went up 12-0 four minutes into the second quarter when Calvert hit Morgan Wolsey for an 11-yard strike. The TD was set up by a Wolsey interception. Again South Delta failed on the two-pointer. The Panthers answered with an 80-yard scoring drive of their own to cut the lead to 12-7, but the South Delta offence stifled any of the Panthers’ momentum with a long scoring drive on their next possession. The key play was a 37-yard leaping catch by receiver Billy Matwichyna that set the Sun Devils up inside the 10-yard line. Calvert punched it from there and with a Doug Jameson conversion, South Delta went up 19-7. Following a South Delta interception, Andrew Kraft rumbled in from 20 yards

and the Sun Devils headed for the locker room seemingly in control up 25-7 at the half. The second half was a different story though, as AAA rushing leader Derek Best shook off a first half leg injury and quarterback Walter Dingwall gained traction through the air. He hit Jaden Simon for a 25-yard score early in the third and suddenly it was 25-14. The Panthers picked things up defensively, keeping the Sun Devils off the scoreboard the entire second half. “We received some news at halftime that there was a question mark about one of our players [Ben McDonald], so that kind of caught us off guard, so we had to make adjustments,” added Moon. Ladner’s Sacred Heart Elementary won 2-1 over Our Lady of Mercy in a breathtaking final of the Catholic Independent Schools Vancouver Archdiocese “Super Eight” Grade 6 boys soccer tournament. Outsized, but not out fought, Sacred Heart had to endure attack after attack as its Burnaby opponent searched for a winner. With the game tied at 1-1, Sacred Heart refused to roll over and while the opposition clearly had several outstanding individuals in its lineup, team work won the day. With three minutes remaining Sacred Heart broke out of defence to score a dramatic winner. The boys were coached by Greg Southwell.

Teen rower gets experience at national championships

Sixteen year-old Delta Deas junior rower Caitlin Lawrence recently qualified to compete in the Canadian National Rowing Championships at Burnaby Lake. The championships are all about gauging yourself against the best rowers in the country. The winner of the single sculls was 26-year old Olympian Carling Zeeman from Ontario, while Lawrence placed a respectable 37th out of 50. “My focus is looking ahead to the coming winter season. I have improved so much but I know I need to get better,” she said. The home of the Delta Deas Rowing Club is the boathouse in the Deas Island Regional Park. The club is a member in good standing of Rowing Canada Aviron and competes in RCA-sanctioned events, as well as other events sponsored by high schools and rowing clubs in the Cascadia area. Margaret married Randall Hanson who had also served in WWII with the Regina Rifle Regiment. Margaret and Randall settled in Ladner in 1959 where they spent many happy years. Margaret is survived by loving sons Murray (Brenda) and Neil (Brenda), 7 grandchildren; Carla, Erica, Krista, Laura, Michael, Ryan and Brittany, as well as 5 great grand children. The family would like to thank Morgan Place Care Facility for the exceptional care and kindness given to their mother, grandmother and great grandmother over the past two years. No service by request.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Howard, who cared for her very lovingly during the difficult last few years. Marg is also survived by her daughter Susie (Larry), her daughter Katy (Mark) and her two much-loved grandchildren, Jonathan and Rosalind. She was predeceased by her beloved son David. Marg leaves to mourn her sisters Irene (Bernie), Leona and Francie (Jack), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Marie and Pauline and by her brother Michael. Marg was a wonderful hostess and a great asset to Howie in his business career. She was a superb and fearless cook; invitations to her spectacular dinner parties were highly prized and never disappointing. She was a very talented seamstress as well. Marg did volunteer work with St. Gabriel’s Church in North York and volunteered at the CNIB. She took French lessons for years, to get the most out of the many trips to France that she and Howie enjoyed. She loved to laugh until she cried and had a beautiful smile.
