Modest turnout for casino session Gateway unveils plans to public for $70-million complex at Delta Town & Country Inn site SANDOR GYARMATI
held afternoon and evening open houses Tuesday at the Delta Town & Country Inn to provide details on the $70-million facility proposed for the site. Tanya Gabara, Gateway’s director of public relations, and Laura Piva-Babcock, BCLC’s director of communications, said the afternoon session
attracted about 40 people, most asking about the planned traffic flow. The evening session saw an even smaller number. In total, only 75 people showed up for the day. One person, who isn’t even a Delta resident but plans to move back to the community,

The turnout was less than expected for the official unveiling of a proposed hotel/casino complex in Ladner. Representatives from Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Ltd. and the B.C. Lottery Corporation
told the Optimist at the evening session that he has no problem with the casino or location, but wondered about the impact on traffic near the George Massey Tunnel, saying it could be a “bit of a mess” until a new crossing is constructed. Noting what’s been presented is a preliminary design, Gabara

The Tsawwassen branch of the Royal Canadian Legion has been thrown a lifeline. Set to close at the end of the year due to a lack of funds, an anonymous donor has stepped forward to provide enough money for the branch to stay afloat for another year.
President Gary Bain confirmed the donation was made under the provision he and the rest of the executive will stay on board for another year. “We wanted to somehow keep it open but I said we needed a lifeline. In an interview earlier this week when news broke the branch was facing closure, Bain noted a drop in membership and an aging volunteer base contributed to the problems. He noted landlord

Church provides shelter Ladner United strikes partnership to become Delta Extreme Weather Shelter IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Those needing a warm place to rest their heads and get out of the cold will have a space in South Delta this winter thanks to a partnership between the Ladner United Church, the City of Delta and Options Community Services. The Delta Extreme Weather Shelter is located at Ladner United Church and will be opened from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. when alerts are called. The church was home to the shelter for several years, but that changed when it underwent extensive renovations. Earlier this year, Delta approached the church to see if it would be open to the idea again. Delta provides funding for the mattresses, bedding and blankets, while the church provides the space and volunteers to set up the shelter and clean the space. Two staff members from Options are on hand when the shelter opens because of the need to have people who have training and experience. “We offer them a hot meal, a shower if they like,

the rain. We did open for the first time on Nov. 21 because of the heavy rain.” The shelter can accommodate up to 10 people. “Debbie and her team have put in a lot of work to get this organized,” said
Rev. Jim Short. “Gillian McLeod, the corporate social planner at the City of Delta, has also been awesome to work with.” When an alert is called, posters are set up at various places in the commu-
nity, there is also outreach from other community groups as well as Delta police to ensure those who need it are brought to the shelter or are notified that it is open. The church also offers a hot shower program every Monday and Thursday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. People can come in, have something hot to drink, have a shower, get a warm pair of socks and socialize a bit with the volunteers. “We were also dealing with a homeless gentleman a few weeks ago and we actually opened up to assist him,” said Short. “Debbie and her team have a gift of outreach, so this just isn’t a place to line-up for food or a place to stay, it’s a place to be welcomed for outreach and other services if needed.” And while the church appreciates donations of clothing, due to storage issues, would prefer cash or gift card donations. “That way folks can go and get a meal, buy groceries or get some warm clothes that fit them properly,” Mitchell adds. “The gift cards are really the best way to help.”
Kudzin continues advocacy work at church
Former MLA constituency assistant uses her experience in outreach capacity IAN JACQUES

She’s a friendly face with a treasure trove of knowledge and community connections at her fingertips. After seven years as constituency assistant for independent MLA Vicki Huntington, Bernadette Kudzin is continuing her advocacy work at Ladner United Church. Kudzin is at the church Tuesday and Thursday mornings as the new community advocate. Her role started in mid-October and she has already helped 15 cases. “The MLA’s office kind of became a place where people came in with not only provincial issues, but other issues,” Kudzin said. “Jim [Rev. Short] was always a person who I could turn to who had the information and knew
others in the community that could help with issues that were beyond the provincial government, so I was really excited about starting an advocacy program here affiliated with Ladner United Church.” She said others have reached out in the community who would like to volunteer, so there is the prospect of the program growing a bit and perhaps being open other days. “Sometimes it’s pointing people in the right direction, other times it’s simply filing out a form and giving them a direction of where to start,” she said. Short adds the congregation has a goal of the church being seen in Ladner as a community hub. “I think it adds a really important piece to the idea of the ‘hub’ that we would like to be,” Short
said. “I got the idea originally from not only Bernadette, but the United Church has an advocate on the Downtown Eastside and I have been impressed with her work, so for me, it’s really helpful because I don’t have the breadth of knowledge of the various organizations around here. So Bernadette brings that amazing history as well as being very hospitable and meticulously patient. It’s finding the information and knowing how to get into the system.” They’re both quick to point out that the service is for all of Delta and is not meant to replace any of the existing advocacy that the offices of MLAs Ian Paton and Ravi Kahlon or MP Carla Qualtrough provide. “The way we are running this, if someone comes here and they raise

and Girls Club, so this is not to replace anything, but in fact strengthen the connections to all of those things, so as a team we can continue to help people,” added Short.

Pet
of the
Week Vinny
Vinny is an ADORABLE one year old male Pitbull mix around 50lbs ands still very puppy in many ways. He originally found himself in a high intake shelter slated for euthanasia because he refused to walk. Turns out he had a broken pelvis, poor guy! After two months of kennel rest, Vinny was all healed up but missed some fundamental socialization and training in his younger puppyhood. He gets very excited when he sees other dogs, and can be quite vocal to tell everyone just how delighted he is. He doesn’t bark as much as scream like a little kid watching a horror movie! Vinny has been assessed by our trainers and is not aggressive, but simply because of his past of crate rest, he doesn’t know how to properly meet another dog or stay calm when he does. Because of this, we recommend a home with no cats or small animals to tempt his prey drive. If he does go to a home with other dogs, we recommend calmer, adult dogs that can help him continue to develop appropriate behaviour. Vinny is GREAT with people, even kids, but is young and still learning proper manners. As with all his puppy behaviour, he is still mastering crate training, leash walking and house breaking....but almost has them all down pat! We are looking for a loving family with the time and patience to keep this sweet boy on the right track, and who understands the importance of rules and boundaries. If you think you could be a good parent and leader for sweet Vinny, please email us at pbandchi@gmail.com or find our foster information and applications on our website at pbandchi.com

What started out as a simple creative writing exercise has morphed into a letter writing campaign that is bringing a little bit of home to soldiers oversees. Operation Canadian Soldier is the brainchild of South Delta Secondary history teacher Jackie Friesen. She came up with the idea during her first full year teaching in 2013 at Sands Secondary in North Delta and has since brought the idea to SDSS. “I wanted to do something for Remembrance Day that wasn’t a video or a worksheet,” Friesen said. “I always thought about the Canadian soldiers serving oversees and what that must be like, missing home and such, so basically I did some research and found that there were places that we could send letters to, so I thought why not have the students actually write the letters and send them off.” She said in the first year there were 90 letters written, but when she started teaching at SDSS a few years ago, the project really took off. “This year I asked the social studies department if they wanted to get on board with me and most of them did and the result was 800 letters,” she said, adding that the letters were sent to soldiers in Egypt, Lebanon, Qatar, Afghanistan, Latvia and the Ukraine. Friesen has many family ties to the military. Her great grandfather served in the First World War, her grandfather served in the Second World War, her dad served in the Royal Canadian

Last year the students sent 250 letters and several of the students received a letter back. “It was pretty cool. Only a couple ever come back, so it was nice to be one of the few. It was interesting,” recalled Grade 10 student Aida Chubbs. International Grade 10 student Si Chen wrote three letters this year and also wrote letters last year. “Last year when I wrote my letter it was my first year here in South Delta, so I talked about my first experiences being in Canada,” she said. “This year it was more about the different cultures, weather, things like that.” Friesen said the letters make an impact. “I tell my students you have no idea where this letter is going. Ladner’s Marie Skerl loses Chris Ekren, 24, after vehicle tumbles down embankment in Squamish DAVE WILLIS
d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It was just a few days after marking their first wedding anniversary in September that Ladner’s Marie Skerl got the tragic news. Her husband Chris Ekren had died in an accident during a hunting trip near Squamish. Ekren, who grew up in Richmond and was on the trip with a friend, was a passenger in a vehicle that tumbled 150 feet down an embankment after a forestry road gave way during a turn. Ekren died on impact. “Chris could make friends wherever he went. He was quiet, but relatable and accepting of everyone,” Skerl told the Optimist. He was a natural athlete and played hockey, baseball, volleyball and basketball in school, she said, adding that he continued playing sports leisurely after he graduated, but became an outdoorsman in recent years. Skerl, 26, noted Ekren,

to start a framing company with a friend last year. The couple met in high school at Richmond
Christian Secondary and were both involved in the school’s musical production of the Wizard of Oz.
“I painted his face green for his role and started falling for him then,” she said. Skerl, a photographer,
said her faith has helped her cope. “Honestly, without my faith in God I don’t know how I would be able to cope with such tragedy. Knowing Chris is happy in Heaven gives me a peace to go about my days,” she said. “Not that I don’t have times of struggle and questioning though, I have been very sad and angry a lot of the time. I lived in denial for the first few weeks and just tried to be strong for everyone else that was hurting. Now that more time has passed and the reality started to set in, it has been really painful. But I have been so surrounded and loved on by family and friends, I am very thankful for that.” Her friends have also started a gofundme campaign to help Skerl. “Marie is one of the kindest, gentle-hearted, and loving people we know and our hearts are breaking deeply for her,” it reads. Pair of restaurants planned
CONTINUED from Page 1 There would be 800 parking stalls, including an underground level and an at-grade level. The road entrance to the complex would have the same routing as what’s now in place but would see road improvements. A second exit would be available but only during peak times at the facility. When entering the lobby area, the casino would be on one side and hotel on the other. A MATCH Eatery & Public House would be straight ahead with a 6,000-squarefoot ballroom above it. Above the casino would be an ATLAS Steak + Fish restaurant and above that would be a lounge area. Both restaurants would have patios. As far as entertainment, there would be no theatre venue for musical acts, although MATCH would have a small stage, while the steak house would likely have a smaller space to accommodate a piano. The casino would have a bar/lounge area but no musical stage. Special musical acts for community events, including fundraisers, could entertain at the meeting
Two of Gateway’s signature restaurants are in the plans but not an entertainment venue. room level, explained Gabara. She noted that level is also ideal for community group meetings, such as service clubs and others, and Gateway would like to reach out to those groups. As far as the gambling component, Gateway’s current proposal is for 600 slot machines and 24 gaming tables, which is based on a market analysis. Other amenities, including a sports book or private poker room, are details that haven’t been fully defined as of yet. Surprised to hear about the low turnout for Gateway’s first open house, Mayor Lois Jackson said people might be waiting for meetings or public hearing by the city to suggest changes. Jackson said people
might want more of a community/entertainment space, which she thought would have been included in the design, while she personally feels Delta needs more hotel rooms. Another open house took place yesterday at Kennedy Seniors Recreation Centre in North Delta and more have been scheduled by Gateway, which has submitted a rezoning and development application to the city. The next one set for Monday, Dec. 11 at Tsawwassen Springs from 10 a.m. to noon and 5 to 7 p.m. Another will be scheduled for mid-January at the Delta Town & Country Inn. Delta will have its own public meetings as the applications moves further along in the process.

he NDP government is wading into the thorny issue of electoral reform but it’s potentially got a lot to lose so I can’t help but wonder how genuine this latest effort to change the way we vote will be. Most people acknowledge the unfairness of a system in which a party that gets 40 per cent of the vote can receive 100 per cent of the power or when a party that gets 10 per cent of the vote doesn’t even get one candidate elected. Rectifying this situation through some form of proportional representation seems like the right thing to do, but there are two significant hurdles that must be cleared for that to happen. The highest hurdle is a government’s willingness to alter the way we vote, and given said government was elected under the existing rules, it likely has more to lose than gain by amending them. The Liberals broached the issue a couple of times last decade without anything coming of it and now the NDP is giving it a whirl. The other hurdle is trying to simplify an issue that can easily get convoluted thanks to terms like list proportional representation, single transferable vote, mixed-member proportional and mixed-member majoritarian. It’s certainly not difficult for a government that isn’t committed to the cause to make it confusing enough that voters decide to stick with the flawed system they know. The fact of the matter is the NDP would never form a majority government under proportional representation, however, if it maintains its 40 per cent share of the vote, it could be the lead dog in a minority government for years to come. Would it rather form a majority government every couple of decades after voters get tired of the right wing or does it want to play nice with the Greens and continue to have them prop up a minority government? How this referendum proceeds could provide an answer to that question. A muddied process, one that puts more than one option to our first past the post system on the mail-in ballot under the guise of giving voters more choices, could set it up for failure, while a more simplified approach that clearly defines just one alternative has a greater chance of success. Premier John Horgan has pledged to change an unfair system. He now has that opportunity.
Altering our voting system comes with pros and cons
B
ritish Columbia is a large province with a relatively small population of 4.6 million people. The whole of the United Kingdom could fit within our borders. Japan, a country of 127 million people, could also fit within our realm. The United Kingdom elects its parliament with the first past the post (FPTP) system as we have done here in Canada for 150 years. Japan elects its government with a complex proportional representation (PR) system. Rural B.C. has always been well served by our FPTP electoral system but that may change in the fall of 2018 when we receive packages in the mail that will ask us to vote in a referendum to switch to PR. The question or questions on the referendum ballot will be developed by the Greens and NDP as per their coalition agreement. The NDP and Green caucuses met on Wednesday to discuss the process. The government has added a website to help us understand the implications of a change and we would all do well to have a look (https://engage. gov.bc.ca/howwevote) before voting on such a crucial issue. There are many types of PR used around the world and the general idea is that every vote counts and that elected officials are chosen by percentage of the popular vote. For instance, the Green Party, which received 17
Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER
per cent of the popular vote in this past election, would receive 17 per cent of the seats in the legislature. Detractors argue there is too much opportunity for small fringe parties to make inroads into the parliament which only serves to complicate the ability to govern through backroom trade-offs and horse trading on party platforms. Proponents argue this is the best formula to achieve consensus on issues. A recent example of some of the trade-offs has already occurred in British Columbia with the new coalition. The much larger NDP representation has to play ball. The NDP campaigned on $10 a day daycare and rebates for renters as two of their main campaign planks yet these two items did not make it into the budget because the Greens want to focus on PR. You can see why. Although they have reached official party sta-
tus under new legislation, with PR, their share of seats based on popular vote would be 14 rather than three. It is interesting to note that longtime NDP strategist Bill Tielman is against PR, according to an article in the Tyee: “That’s because proportional representation practically guarantees that no party will ever be able to win a majority of seats, leaving every government dependent on small parties like the Greens.” Proponents like Devon Rowcliffe in a Sept. 22 opinion piece, also in the Tyee, wrote, “Let’s face it: the first-past-thepost voting system that we use provincially and federally here in Canada is outdated, confusing and no longer fit for purpose. It fosters toxic, adversarial politics.” We have been down the road on this issue in 2005 and 2009 and both times the idea of a singular transferable vote was turned down by British Columbians. This time the threshold for the referendum will be 50 per cent as opposed to 60 per cent and there will not be a simple yes or no question on the ballot as promised. Either way, it is contingent on us to dive in to this issue to best understand how to make an informed choice next fall. Christmas letter to Santa asks for a new bridge
Editor: Growing up in my Ladner home just blocks from Holly Elementary, I would write a letter to Santa every year. When I was five, I asked for a puppy. When I was seven, I wanted a Hot Wheels set. At nine, I asked Saint Nick for a new 10-gear bike. This year, my Christmas letter to Santa is a little different. I’m not asking for new toys or games. I’m not even asking for a white Christmas. This year, all I want for Christmas is a bridge. As a lifelong Delta resident, I have memories
going back as far as I can remember sitting in tunnel traffic. I remember missing a soccer game in Vancouver because there was an accident in the tunnel. As a student, I remember missing classes and presentations. As a young professional, I’ve missed meetings and deadlines, all because our community is served by outdated infrastructure. I know that I’m not alone in making a new bridge my Christmas wish this holiday season. In fact, over 90,000 commuters from Delta and beyond use that tunnel every sin-
gle day. This is more than just an issue of congestion – even though the tunnel is the source of the worst traffic bottleneck in the province. This is also more than just an environmental issue, even though idling cars at the Massey Tunnel emit 13,000 tons of greenhouse gas every year. This is, above all else, a public safety issue. Independent engineering reports have confirmed the Massey Tunnel is seismically unsafe. We know the tunnel would not withstand a 6.5 magnitude earthquake, the conse-
Port Guichon visit provides hope that our future is in good hands
Editor: One of the most pleasant things about residing in Ladner is that the community has elementary schools such as Port Guichon. That is not to write that there are not other schools such as Port Guichon, but it is to state that for the second year I have attended Port Guichon for the school’s Remembrance Day assembly. As with last year, this year was top drawer. When I attend at Port Guichon and I look out at the assembled children from kindergarten to Grade 7, I see a beauty
that can only come from children who have been exposed to quality instruction from competent teachers supported by engaging staff. When I address these children, I become very emotional because I realize they are the future of our country and that long after old fogies such as I am are gone, they will be the leaders of the economy, of the various business, of the political agenda and, quite possibly, members of the House of Commons or provincial legislature or, possibly, a mayor or city alderman [I’m old school].
Whatever both their and Canada’s future holds, I know that it will be positive and assured and based on reality and a heavy dose of common sense. I know that because I see it each time I attend Port Guichon Elementary and see the children and their teachers and the staff who so caringly ensure all is in top form. It is as if Canada were a giant maple tree and these children were seeds that nurtured and grew and in time became that wonderful Maple Leaf that is Canada, strong and true, always. Bob Orrick

quences of which would be disastrous. The bridge replacement project has been approved by the independent Agricultural Land Commission, and has also passed a rigorous environmental assessment. Some 14,000 pages of documents have been amassed and, yes, this includes existing, independent, thirdparty engineering reports. Despite all of this, the project is currently on hold. I’m holding out for a Christmas miracle: maybe, just maybe, members of our community can come together in support of a
project that only serves to benefit us. In his recent column, Nicholas Wong has made a serious accusation – he accuses the previous government, our MLA, and the mayor and council of propagating misinformation regarding the business case and public safety need for a new crossing. I believe the onus of proof for such an extreme claim is on the accuser, and not on the defendant. I, for one, am grateful to our political leaders in Delta for continuing to fight for a project we so desperately need.
The bridge replacement project was shovel ready. Contracts were in place, and over $100 million worth of work had already been completed. The delay caused by this redundant study will add years on to the timeline of any eventual replacement. Delta commuters don’t need another study — we need a bridge. That’s what I’m putting in my letter to Santa this year. I implore those in South Delta to do the same. Dylan Kruger Constituency Assistant to Delta South MLA Ian Paton
Don’t let changes to Richmond happen here
Editor: What are they thinking when it comes to cruise ships sailing into Delta? Imagine the extra traffic the George Massey Tunnel will have to handle what with thousands of passengers and all the related service vehicles. Then there’s the environmental impact on this important Pacific Flyway. Roger Emsley’s suggestion of using Squamish is brilliant as it is better situated in most every respect
for these ships. While I’m at it, may I also comment on John Le mare’s letter about the possible loss of Ladner’s unique character? My wife and I moved to Ladner some three years ago and love the small town atmosphere that exists here. Having taught at DSS from 1980 to 2000, I feel I am qualified to say there haven’t been too many dramatic changes. I realize that some are inevi-
table, but they have been well managed. We moved here from Richmond where we lived for 30+ years. Please, please don’t let happen here the changes that we saw in Richmond. I urge parents and grandparents, if they are able, to pay forward some of their kids’ inheritances so they can remain here and enjoy this unique community. It’s such a great place to raise a family. Ivan Armstrong

Ladner mom asking public to send Christmas cards to son DAVE WILLIS
d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
A Ladner family is looking to create a little Christmas magic this year. Their hope is that people would consider writing a Christmas card to Owen Hill Davie, a youngster with a host of medical issues. He isn’t able to lift much weight but he can hold a card and loves paper, said Owen’s mom Stephanie Hill Davie in an email to the Optimist. “He received a card about a week ago for Christmas and as soon as I showed it to him, his eyes lit up,” she said. Owen has been unwell for nine weeks and only returned to school a few days ago “so to see him smile, play and truly love an item that is just perfect for him is amazing for us as parents to witness,” Hill Davie said. This is the second year the family has put the call out for Christmas cards for Owen. In 2015, he received

DOVE spreading awareness to mark Day of Remembrance
D ec em be r 1 – 21
The national Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women is Tuesday, Dec. 6. This day is often marked by the wearing of purple ribbons to signal remembrance for women affected by violence, and to promote discussion and action surrounding violence against women. On Dec. 6, 1989, 14 women at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique were murdered in a mass shooting. A committee from DOVE (Delta Opposes Violence Everywhere) will be participating in public awareness events this weekend in both North
Delta and South Delta, providing information, resources and education on the issue. DOVE believes that violence in all relationships has to stop and the way to achieve this is to educate people about the reality and scope of this problem and how they can help to prevent further violence. On Saturday, DOVE committee members will be at Sungod Recreation Centre from 9 to 11 a.m. and on Sunday at Tswawwassen Mills (Entry 6 near Bass Pro Shop) from noon to 3 p.m. Caber, the victim services dog, will also on be on site with Victim Services
staff. DOVE consists of various community agencies, including; Deltassist Family & Community Services, Delta Police Victim Services, Stroh Healthcare, Boys and Girls Club, Options Community Services, Bowman Law Center, Diversecity, Options, Family Justice Services, Delta School District, Delta/Surrey Community Corrections and Legal Services Society. They work in a coordinated effort to end violence in all relationships by bringing about public awareness, as well as reducing any identified gaps in services within Delta.

2017 Delta Hospice Society Annual Appeal
End-of-life Care is Everybody’s Responsibility Dear Friends of Hospice, Hospice doesn’t cure a person’s disease, but it certainly can offer healing. This healing has been able to happen in a new way, with the opening of the Irene Thomas Hospice and the Harold & Veronica Savage Centre for Supportive Care in Ladner, seven years ago.

Since that time, we have been able to offer patients and their families an unprecedented level of care - none of which would have been possible without the support of our local community partners and donors that believe in the relief of suffering in living, in dying and in grieving. The Society has been a symbol of hope and comfort over the years as it cares for people from the time of diagnosis of cancer or other life-threatening illness and follows families throughout their journey of illness, wellness, recurrence, end-of-life and bereavement. Delta Hospice is one of 4 hospice societies in British Columbia that operates a hospice residence and it has a unique centre for supportive care to support people living at home. Being a small not-for-profit has allowed us to be true to our culture and values and continue to offer unparalleled care despite the cost, but it requires a commitment from our community to help us maintain this level of quality and care. “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” Mother Theresa

evin, from The RunInn Delta would like to thank the Delta Chamber of Commerce and sponsor, The Delta Optimist for awarding the store the Hats off to Excellence Small Business Award for 2017. This is a great honor for the Runinn Delta and I would like to thank all of our staff and customers who have helped support us these past 15 years. I read recently that 80% off all fundraising comes from small independent businesses. This is an important statistic in regards to how and where we as consumers choose to spend our disposable income and how it can benefit our community. When we shop with local businesses first it helps our local tax base, keeps money circulated within the community and allows small business owners to help sponsor hundreds of local fundraisers to benefit local charities. So when you go Christmas shopping these next few weeks think about shopping with the independent businesses of Ladner and Tsawwassen first. It’s what helps keep our community strong!

Beach store has 87-year history in Tsawwassen
The Delta Museum and Archives Society recently launched Our Delta Stories, a project that asks community members to share their favourite Delta story in 250 words or less. The stories will be posted to the society’s social media pages and website, while some will also be printed in the Optimist. This story comes from Gary Cullen, who has lived in Tsawwassen for 51 years and is a member of the Delta Museum and Archives board of trustees. What is the most southwesterly retail business in continental Canada? Do you know the answer? It’s a neighbourhood store that has been in operation for 87 years in Tsawwassen. The original Tsawwassen Beach Store, located at 130 English Bluff Rd. near 1st Avenue, was built by William Graham in 1930. Graham purchased 80 acres of forest lots from the Kirkland family in the late 1920s for $1,400. Graham’s land ran between what is now 1st and 2nd avenues, from

William Graham built the original Tsawwassen Beach Store on English Bluff Road in 1930 after purchasing 80 acres from the Kirkland family. Tsawwassen Beach east to what is now the west border of Diefenbaker Park. Graham’s plan was to develop his large parcel of land into two-acre lots for summer cottages along Summer and Autumn avenues (now 1st and 2nd avenues). To help attract buyers to his properties
Graham felt it necessary to build a small grocery store close by. The area also attracted summer campers. There were enough people to support a small store with customers coming from all parts of sparsely populated Tsawwassen. Graham sold the store

to the Olson brothers of Canoe Pass, who in turn sold it to Norman Pearson who operated it until 1950. Pearson, a First World War veteran, lived alone in the home that was built onto
the back of the store. He was a rather serious fellow and he would warn people that he had a gun under the counter in case anyone dared rob him. It was mounted so he could

shoot right through the wooden counter. He was not afraid to show the gun to customers, children included. In 1950 Pearson sold the store to the Egans. A year later, at the age of 71, he was found dead in the municipal gravel pit (now Diefenbaker Park) of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. After finding his body, the police searched his home on Summer Avenue and found he had left out drinks and cigarettes for the officers. After the Egans, the store was owned by Mr. Chunick in the early 1970s, Helen McGloin (and ran by Larry Neily) in the late 1970s early ’80s, Bill and Sylvia So in the 1980s and early ’90s, Krishan and Renu Singla from the mid1990s until present. In 2004, the family replaced the old structure with a new building. The new Tsawwassen Beach Store will likely continue to supply the southwest corner of continental Canada with everyday grocery needs for decades to come.

Recently I found myself in a most vulnerable position! The muscles in my lower back went “crunch” and that was it … for at least two weeks. I became very slow in my movements and I realized, once again, how vulnerable we humans are and how quickly our world can change. I was blessed to receive the help and prayers of my community who gathered to support and wait patiently for healing to take place. Every one of us recognizes that life holds many unforeseen events. These life-changing times can be joyous or traumatic and they can come upon us slowly or suddenly, but wherever our life journey
Minister’s Minute ELIZABETH NORTHCOTT
All Saints Anglican Church
takes us, there are fellow travellers on the road. The prophet Isaiah found himself agonizing over the destruction of his beloved city of Jerusalem. He wept as the children of God found themselves
in a vulnerable place. Isaiah cried out for restoration and renewal for the people. Most of all he remembered God’s love that would never abandon them. “Yet, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are the potter, we are all the work of your hand.” (Isaiah 64:8) We are all God’s beloved children. We are also like the potter’s vase, fragile and beautiful in God’s eyes. But in those unexpected moments when you feel most vulnerable, don’t forget there is a community that upholds you in prayer and service. Reach out in this dark season and find Christ’s light that shines, especially in those vulnerable moments of your life.

There are moments where you get hit in the gut,” says instructor Greg Kean. Kean, who says he’s a Durang fan, notes the school did one of his plays last year during a one-act festival. The Marriage of Bette and Boo, an autobiographical look at the playwright’s upbringing, deftly balances sadness and frustration with giddy intervals of absurd situations and humorous behaviours, a press release explains. The drama students are handling the challenge well, Kean says. “To actually step into these roles and imagine them is hard. I can see them doing really, really well.” The play runs from Dec. 7 to 9 at 7 p.m. at Southpointe Academy. Tickets are $10, $5 for seniors. There is a Saturday matinee at 1 p.m. which is free for seniors. • Southpointe will also play host to an exhibi-

A “pop-up choir” has a two-concert series scheduled at St. David’s Anglican Church in Tsawwassen this month. The series, titled Waiting for the Light, celebrates the Celtic winter solstice and the season of advent, says wonderchoir composer/conductor Lesley Sutherland, who became interested in the similarities between the two traditions. Shine a Candle – Meditations and Music takes place Sunday, Dec.

levels fluctuating, and as mentioned above, protein helps to stabilize it. Fourth, do you get sick regularly? This could indicate you have a poor immune system, which is composed of cells that are made from proteins. Worried about what all that protein might do to your heart and blood vessels? No need. In a study at Johns Hopkins University, they found that a diet in which roughly a quarter of the calories came from lean protein sources actually reduced blood pressure, LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides better than a traditional higher-carb diet. How much protein should you be eating? Aim for a protein source with every meal and snack. In addition, if you have a hard time falling asleep at night, you might want to snack on some protein before you go to bed. Because protein helps to balance blood sugar levels, this in turn also helps to balance our cortisol levels (our stress hormone). And too much cortisol before bed makes falling asleep harder. Protein is essential for a healthy body. It helps with growth, maintenance and repair of our cells (including our muscles), it gives us energy and it keeps our stomach satisfied. Protein itself is actually chains of other molecules called amino acids. There are 22 amino acids in total in the body. Of the 22, 13 of them are non-essential, meaning our bodies are capable of making these little guys on their own. The other nine are called essential because we need to ingest these aminos through the foods we eat. When we eat the right foods, these nine amino acids will get reassembled to form the different types of protein our body needs. So, what foods contain these nine essential amino acids? Proteins like meat,
fish, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt and soybeans. Protein is also available in plant sources, such as legumes, nuts, seeds, grain products and even many vegetables have some of the nine amino acids in them. But, these foods are termed “incomplete proteins” because they don’t have all of the nine essential amino acids. When we eat a varied diet it’s easy-peasy to get those aminos and a full protein in your body. How do you know if you’re getting enough protein in your diet? Well, let’s review a few things that can kick in if you are deficient in protein (and please keep in mind this is a general list and not to be used to self-diagnose). First, do you have food cravings? Protein can even out your blood sugar levels, helping to fill you up and keep you satisfied longer. Second, do you recover slowly from injuries? Protein helps to heal and build new cells, tissue and skin, hence the recommendation of having a high protein food after a heavy workout. Third, do you suffer from brain fog? This could be your blood sugar

Tsawwassen’s Nicholas Harrison is drawing on his own personal experience with his new play How Star Wars Saved My Life. The 49-year-old went through childhood physical and sexual abuse from kindergarten to Grade 4 at a religious private school. He was eventually pulled from the school and that spring saw the original Star Wars film. The movie really framed for him right and wrong, good and evil, standing up for yourself and that a small group of people can do so much to change an established authority, he says. “As a kid I wanted to be a Jedi,” he says. The original Star Wars trilogy’s messages are crystal clear “but it was exactly what I needed at the time,” Harrison notes. The play, four years in

The creative mind on display in guild’s Presents of Mind show
It takes a lot of courage to create a new piece of art and present it to the world as a part of your creative repertoire. At first, most artists begin by copying photographs. A gradual learning curve begins. We learn to make quick value studies of our subject. Manipulation of the subject means our focus changes. We learn the art of picture making by doing. An art guild is a great place to make artistic decisions because there are no shortage of critics willing to make suggestions. We may take the criticism to heart, or not, depending on our own vision. Artists soon become their own best critics. They hold work up to a mirror to see if it speaks to a viewer. They photograph their work and copy it in a grayscale image to be sure that dark and light are juxtaposed to put the subject in the best light. Part of this effort is

Titans clinch provincial berth Senior girls’ volleyball team headed to Fernie after wildcard playoff wins IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
They thought their season was over. But after a school dropped out, the Southpointe Academy senior girls’ volleyball team had literally hours to scramble to get ready for a three-team wildcard playoff. That scramble paid off as the Titans won a pair of matches to clinch a firsttime berth into the single “A” provincial championships this weekend in Fernie.
“We were planning our wind-up party. We all thought we were done,” recalled head coach Michaela Staller. The Titans are a young team with nine players and only one Grade 12. For most of the season, Southpointe only had eight players on the roster, but that didn’t deter them as they went 10-0 in Tier 2 (Fraser Valley West) regular season play and qualified for the Fraser Valley Zone Championships, which the Tsawwassen independent school hosted for the first time.
“Our goal at the start was to go undefeated in league play, so the girls were very proud of achieving that goal,” said Staller. “After finishing fourth at the Valleys, like I said, we thought we were done, but when a team dropped out, we had to scramble to get the team together for the wildcard playoff.” That wildcard saw the Titans beat Island No. 3 Campbell River Christian in two sets and Lower Mainland No. 3 Carver Christian in two sets. “This was a last chance opportunity and the kids
really jumped on it,” she said. “They have the skills, but at times when we get in high pressure situations, they can struggle to finish the job, so I feel that the kids were just excited to play more volleyball and didn’t have a chance to think about it. They didn’t get caught up in the implications because it happened so quickly.” The Titans are seeded 15th for the provincials. “A good finish would be to finish middle of the pack. If we could finish eighth or ninth then we’ve done a good job,” Staller
said. “All year with only eight girls we have put people in different positions, so that’s one of our strengths - that everyone is able to play two positions on the team. Our moniker is the three Cs (play with confidence, communicating, working on coverage). If we can do all of those things, then we can have a good tournament.” The Titans roster includes: Adelia Bailey, Shelby Bains, Emily Shaver, Rhea Rai, Ravleen Gill, Diya Sharma, Milan Bahi, Simren Panesar and Solana Redway-Ziola.
Tsaw. soccer players reach NCAA quarter-final IAN JACQUES

It’s one of those rare moments you might never see again. Last Saturday night two Tsawwassen girls were included in the starting 11 for an NCAA Division 1 national quarter-final soccer game. Alessia Azermadhi and Olivia Sheppard suited up
for Princeton in the elite eight NCAA College Cup against UCLA. Princeton, ranked 13th in the country, pulled off a huge upset the week prior beating No. 2 ranked North Carolina 2-1 in overtime to set up the matchup with the No. 4 ranked Bruins. On Saturday, the Bruins attacked the Tigers from the get-go, scoring goals in
the 16th and 18th minutes on their way to a 3-1 win and a trip to the semifinals against No. 3 Duke tonight in Orlando. The NCAA tournament appearance was the 12th in school history and the third in the last six years, all of which have seen Princeton advance to at least the second round. The quarterfinal appearance was the Tigers’ best
showing since 2004, which saw Princeton make it to the College Cup semis before UCLA ended that run as well. The Tigers outscored their opposition 44-11 on the way to a 16-3-1 record, the second-most wins in program history behind the 19-3 record the 2004 team posted. Sheppard played in 19 games, starting 16 of

Delta crushes Port Moody 11-1 as former Panther Szpakowski notches first goal in new uniform IAN JACQUES

The Delta Ice Hawks continue to roll, winning their ninth game in 10 starts Tuesday night as they blasted the visiting Port Moody Panthers 11-1 at the Ladner Leisure Centre in Pacific Junior Hockey League action. Delta dominated from start to finish, leading 2-0 at the end of the first period after outshooting the Panthers 14-2. The lead was increased to 6-1 after two and Delta poured it on the third, ultimately firing 55 shots at a pair of Port Moody goalies. Jordan Bogress and Jordan Deyrmenjian each recorded hat-tricks. Mark Epshtein notched a pair, while Jonathan Rees, Daniel Szpakowski and Alex Suprynowicz added singles. For Szpakowski, it was his first goal in an Ice Hawks’ uniform since a trade last week with the Panthers.
Szpakowski appeared in 104 career games with Port Moody, posting 94 points (47 goals, 47 assists). The 20-year-old is a native of Coquitlam. Sun Devils 8th at provincials SDSS field hockey team can’t keep pool play momentum going IAN JACQUES

The South Delta Sun Devils field hockey team played to an eighth place finish at the recent provincial championships in Richmond. SDSS finished second in pool play with shutout wins over Charles Best and Eric Hamber and played to a scoreless tie with Cowichan. That set up their first playoff game against Mt. Doug where the Sun Devils dropped a 2-1 decision to push them into the consolation side of the draw. South Delta was ahead 1-0 in the game, but a few miscues in the second half proved to be their undoing. The team came out a bit flat in its second playoff game with McMath, falling behind 2-0 five minutes in and eventually losing 3-1 to the Richmond school. South Delta then dropped its final game to

South Delta fell 3-1 to McMath in the second game of the playoff round. Oak Bay. “We went in looking for a top eight finish, so we achieved that goal,” said head coach Neil McLennan. “The girls played really well. Cowichan was ranked number two, so to play them to a scoreless tie is a real positive. We played quite well against Mt. Doug. Against McMath we
had a terrible start. After that we started to play much better, but we just couldn’t recover from the tough start. It’s a young team that is learning how to play, but on the whole, it was a good tournament. Had we played to our potential, we are just as good as anyone in the province.” SDSS loses six players
to graduation, including goaltender Abigail Smart. McLennan said that will be a key position to fill next year. “We also lose a few other really key Grade 12 players,” he said. “Once we find the goalie, she will obviously be new and a bit inexperienced, so there will be a learning curve for her, but we have a good mix who are in Grade 11 this year and will be Grade 12 next year. That’s the nice thing about high school sports – every year is different.” The Devils roster featured: Grade 12: Bailey Mitchell, Kate Knoedler, Abigail Smart, Katie McCarvill, Brianna Lyseng, Aimee Calder. Grade 11: Elise Ridley, Mady Arjomandi, Eve Carrothers, Aliyah Smith, Annika Vaughan. Grade 10: Megan Childs, Kayle Guraliuk. Grade 9: Tessa Everett, Ciana Dawydiuk, Natalie Anderson.
Christine Howlett caps SFU volleyball career with upset home win
Senior night was a memorable one for South Delta’s Christine Howlett. Howlett, who captained the Sun Devils to the second of three provincial girls volleyball titles, helped power the Simon Fraser University Clan to an upset four-set win of the Northwest Nazarene Crusaders on Burnaby Mountain. Simon Fraser, winners of seven of their last nine games, and playing their best volleyball of the season, dispatched regionally ranked Central Washington and NNU in back-to-back home games. SFU defeated NNU 25-23, 25-14, 22-25, 25-16 and finishes its season with a 15-13 overall record and 12-8 in the conference, good for fifth place. NNU is 24-4 overall and finishes second in the conference with a 16-4 record. “We wanted to send our seniors off on a high
Christine Howlett note in their final game, and they both stepped up and contributed, both blocking and attacking, and they won some important points for us that swung momentum in our favour so it was everything you could ask for on Seniors Night,” said head coach Gina Schmidt. Howlett had nine kills and four blocks in her final home game. SFU finished the season 8-2 on its home court.

Goodbye My Love Goodbye Dad So suddenly our curtain fell on Sunday, November 19th with the sudden passing of my darling husband, our precious dad, and grandpa. Frederick George “Bud” Clark has lived the past 20 years happily retired in Qualicum, travelling with his wife Sylvia and spending time with his family, sons Jason and Daron and their families. Bud served the community of Delta for 28 years, joining the Delta Police Department on May 1st, 1968 until his retirement as Deputy Chief on May 24th, 1996. Bud spent many years coaching his kids in various sports and continued to give to the community until he moved to his dream home in Qualicum on Vancouver Island. Anyone who knew Bud, remembers a larger than life, kind-hearted, thoughtful, gentle man. He was dedicated to his career and devoted to his family and their happiness and well-being. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to honour Bud. Please refer to the Facebook page, “Remembering the Life of F.G “Bud” Clark” for updates.
