New life, new language
Delta Safe Haven helping Syrian refugee learn English so he can flourish IAN JACQUES

Through the generosity of an anonymous donor and the volunteer efforts of Delta Safe Haven, the last of three Syrian refugee families continues to thrive here in Ladner. Muhanad Azizi and his wife Nariman arrived in January 2016 after fleeing war-torn Syria. The couple was provided with federal government support for one year, with the community,
through Delta Safe Haven, also stepping up to help. The Alnuaimi and Al Mohammad families also settled in Ladner with the support of Delta Safe Haven, but have subsequently moved to the Toronto area to be closer to family. All three families had little to no English skills, and experienced tremendous culture shock as they left other family members in Syria to seek a better life in Canada. The Optimist sat down this
week with Muhanad Azizi, and members of Delta Safe Haven, to get an update on the couple’s experience here in Ladner. Through local interpreter Hanna Maron, Azizi said he was grateful for all the support from the community. “It was a culture shock when we arrived. We knew little English,” Azizi said. “But we did our best to cope and do well.” Delta Safe Haven co-chair Rev. Jim Short said the Azizis went to some school in the first year and
when that year ended Muhanad worked at a minimum wage job. “It does not generate enough money to support his family even though the lovely people they rent from here in Ladner give them below market rental as a means of support,” said Short. “We were approached some time ago by people who offered a generous donation on the condition of anonymity to help Muhanad further his English language skills. Despite the arrest, charge and conviction of three people, Delta police say a 2016 case of human remains found on Tsawwassen First Nation property is still an active investigation. In February 2016, Delta police began investigating the disappearance of 32-year-old Robinder Virk of Surrey, who was reported missing in January of that year. DPD took over the file Sharlene on Feb. 24 Brooks after it came to light that Virk was known to hang out in Delta. The investigation subsequently led police to an unoccupied home in the 2000-block of Tsawwassen Drive where the man’s remains were found on March 3, 2016. “Identification of the remains were determined through forensic dental identification and DNA,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks. “The remains were identified to be of Mr. Virk.” Brooks said between February and November of last year, police deployed a number of investigative techniques. CAO leaves position early Scheduled to retire next May, George Harvie has already cleaned out his office SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
George Harvie is out as CAO of Delta. Mayor Lois Jackson confirmed this week that the city’s long-time top bureaucrat has cleaned out his office. Details from an in-camera meeting won’t be discussed publicly. Jackson noted Harvie will be using accrued vacation days he has owing in advance of his scheduled retirement next May. It was announced last month that Harvie would be retiring next spring. “He’s a fabulous person and CAO and no one could have done what he did in conjunction with staff for the last 17 years,” she said. Jackson said the abrupt departure means several senior staff members — parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz, engineering director Steven Lan and finance director Karl Preuss — will alternate as CAO until a full-time

said it would be up to the new mayor and council to
select a new chief administrative officer. She noted the newly elected council would want someone it feels “compatible” with as it begins a four-year term. A Tsawwassen resident for over 40 years, Harvie joined the Corporation of Delta as CAO in 2001. Prior to that, he spent more than 30 years with the City of Burnaby in a variety of senior executive positions, including deputy city manager. He worked with Delta council on a plethora of major issues over the years, including the fight to keep Delta Hospital’s ER and the Burns Bog purchase to the Southlands development and Delta’s lobby effort to save the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project. Last year, Harvie was given an award from the International City/County Management Association in recognition of his 45 years of service to local governments. Harvie was not available for comment.
Mastering language will lead to a higher-paying job
CONTINUED from Page 1 “With a child coming Muhanad needs to earn more and so our hope is that with our remaining funds and with this generous donation we will support him for a year to go to school full-time.” The schooling, which starts Jan. 8, will be four to five mornings or after-
noons a week. Short said they will also support him in finding a part-time job that works around that as well offering support through the birth of their first child. “Our goal, and he is very committed, is that having mastered as much of English as he can after this year he will get better
employment as well as be in the position to perhaps further train in a trade or vocation,” said Short. Azizi said he is looking forward to learning more English as he wants to be able to find a better job and support his family. “I have been waiting seven years for our baby,” he said. “Learning English
is a way to support my family.” Short said Delta Safe Haven is about $8,000 short in the funds needed to support the Azizis so it’s hoping to fundraise to reach that goal. Donations can be made at Ladner United Church. Azizi said he is grateful for the support of Short
and other volunteers, including Diane Schmidt, Brian Kirkbride, Maron and his landlords. “We still have some family back in Syria, but friendships have been forged here,” he said. “They have become our extended family and have made a huge impact in our lives.”
Three plead guilty to interference with a dead body
CONTINUED from Page 1 Those strategies resulted in the arrest and charge of two adults and one juvenile. The two adults, Bradley William Boyd, 22, and Sean Andrew Rose,
21, both of Delta, were charged with interference with a dead body under section 182 of the Criminal Code. The juvenile was also charged with the same offence. All three pled guilty in
December Holiday Sale on all
Surrey provincial court. In early October, Rose was handed a nine-month conditional sentence and Boyd was given a 12-month conditional sentence. Brooks said there
appears to be a loose association between the three men and Virk. “Even though we secured arrests, charges and pleas, it is still an open and ongoing file. Delta police don’t believe the
products
case has come to a full conclusion.” Anyone with any information about what led to Virk’s death is asked to call Delta police at 604-9464411 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Vinny is an ADORABLE one year old male Pitbull mix around 50lbs and still very puppy in many ways. He originally found himself in a high intake shelter slated for euthanasia because he refused to walk. Turns out he had a broken pelvis, poor guy! After two months of kennel rest, Vinny was all healed up but missed some fundamental socialization and training in his younger puppyhood. He gets very excited when he sees other dogs, and can be quite vocal to tell everyone just how delighted he is. He doesn’t bark as much as scream like a little kid watching a horror movie! Vinny has been assessed by our trainers and is not aggressive, but simply because of his past of crate rest, he doesn’t know how to properly meet another dog or stay calm when he does. Because of this, we recommend a home with no cats or small animals to tempt his prey drive. If he does go to a home with other dogs, we recommend calmer, adult dogs that can help him continue to develop appropriate behaviour. Vinny is GREAT with people, even kids, but is young and still learning proper manners. As with all his puppy behaviour, he is still mastering crate training, leash walking and house breaking....but almost has them all down pat! We are looking for a loving family with the time and patience to keep this sweet boy on the right track, and who understands the importance of rules and boundaries. If you think you could be a good parent and leader for sweet Vinny, please email us at pbandchi@gmail.com or find our foster information and applications on our website at pbandchi.com

DPD joins forces to launch bike registry program
A bike registration program with a proven track record of recovering bicycles both in the Lower Mainland and across North America is rolling in to Delta just in time for Christmas. Delta police have joined forces with Project 529, a U.S.-based bicycle reporting and recovery network,
to launch the Delta 529 Garage Bike Registry. The registry is a quick and easy way to reunite bike owners with their registered bikes if those bikes are lost or stolen. Delta police will partner with Cap’s South Shore Cycles at 7917 Scott Rd. tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. to host a free registration
event to introduce the 529 Garage program. Anyone wishing to register their bike can attend with their ride and volunteers and 529 officials will register their bikes for free. “We hope to expand the program across the city in 2018 as well as having 529 Garage pop-ups at community events,” said Const.
Sarah Swallow. Delta is joining more than 25 municipalities and 100 bike shops across B.C. that have already adopted the program. The City of Vancouver saw a 35 per cent reduction of reported bike thefts and more than 200 bikes returned in the last 12 months through the program.

MLA frustrated by Fraser Health Paton hits dead-end with health region in bid to keep BabyDaze program going SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It makes sense to keep it but convincing the health region to do so is another matter. Delta South MLA Ian Paton has been working with local moms in an effort to save BabyDaze, a nurse-led post-natal group that’s been cancelled by Fraser Health. “It’s been very frustrating for us,” said Paton. “I took it upon myself to make this a project to try to save the program because it’s really valuable but I feel Fraser Health isn’t interested in hearing what we have to say, let alone working with these South Delta moms to find a solution.” Saying it’s the only public health resource for many new moms and their infants in the community, mothers have been trying to reverse the cancellation, noting the group allows anyone who attends to access advice on raising healthy children from qualified professionals. Led by a public health

Young mothers are upset Fraser Health has cancelled the BabyDaze program. and group discussions, but without the nurse. Paton said he was able to get a meeting in Victoria with Health Minister Adrian Dix and his staff in late October, one that seemed constructive with the minster genuinely interested in learning more about the concerns. However, he said a follow-up meeting with Fraser Health in Surrey last week was frustrating. “We’re very disappointed. I was with three young
nurse, the group met weekly at the South Delta Public Health Office in Ladner where members were able to weigh babies, discuss infant health concerns and receive education from the nurse on a variety of topics, both as a group and individually. The moms were told earlier this fall that a different group was being established that would meet at the Tsawwassen Library, where there would be guest speakers
moms and their babies that came along to the meeting. Basically we got to the meeting and they didn’t seem to have any intention of even compromising with us. So we kind of hit a dead-end and everyone went home with a sour taste in their mouth,” he said. Paton said he met several moms at his Ladner office a few days ago to come up with a new plan to go back to the Ministry of Health.
In a letter to Dix, Paton stated the program has worked and cancelling it is a huge loss for the community. Responding to the mothers’ concerns, a FHA spokesperson told the Optimist last month the new group will be led by the library and the Ladner Early Childhood Development Hub Program. The concern is that parents could be relying solely on the advice of a nurse rather than seeing a doctor. In his letter to Dix, Paton noted that volunteer programs, while well intentioned, are missing the sense of legitimacy that comes with being associated with a health authority, including the knowledge of a nurse practitioner. Erica Beard, a Tsawwassen mom who took part in the program, said what’s needed is the health component because there’s no postnatal care in South Delta. She said it’s also a valuable option for those moms who don’t have a GP.
Utility bills to rise $25
Delta homeowners will see their utility bills rise by $25 after Delta council gave conditional approval to bylaws Monday night. According to a staff report, the flat rate utility bill will increase from $1,035 for a single-family home in 2017 to $1,060 in 2018. The water portion of the bill will increase by $28 to $540 while the sewer component will rise by $6 to $345. The combined solid waste rate is actually decreasing by $9 to $175 as the recycling and waste collection services contract was recently renewed with more favourable rates. Director of finance Karl Preuss said the 2018 hike for water is the last in a multi-year cost increase intended to help pay for system improvements. “I believe we have the best water and sewer systems in North America,” said Coun. Bruce McDonald. “Our water rates compared to most places in North America are miniscule.”

sibility possible. This week I attended a wonderful evening, hosted by Hope International, of music, dramatic story telling and a presentation about the transformation of lives through the direct accessibility to clean water along with basic hygiene education. I was once again thankful and affirmed in the idea “so this can be done.” Jean Vanier, founder of L’Arche, proposed a question for us all to deeply ponder, “Can we dream of a world where people, whatever their race, religion, culture, abilities or disabilities, can find a place and reveal their gifts?” I say yes with a thankful heart “this can be done.”

We often hear about the challenges in our society and daily environment regarding accessibility. These concerns are real and it is vital that we keep working toward a fully accessible reality. This means we are looking at multiple levels of attentiveness. Some immediate areas that come quickly to mind are physical barriers, equity of services, education for diverse learners and full inclusion as a valued and gifted member of human society. As a parent of a child with Down syndrome, the need to be advocates for various means of accessibility is immediate and constant. When we (the individual with a different ability and their families)

Reach campaign looking to give the Gift of Speech
Early intervention is key to child’s development Reach Child and Youth Development Society hopes to raise $10,000 during its 2017 holiday appeal to fund 20 children to receive speech therapy. The Gift of Speech 2017 features videos of threeyear-old Haris Tsaoussis during therapy with Sheena Kirkland, speech language pathologist and coordinator of the Reach Early Intervention Therapies Program. “Haris’s family is significantly involved in his therapy and they have a good understanding of his strengths and challenges,” says Kirkland. “His team has noticed a significant positive change to his resting facial posture over the past year and a half. We are looking forward to seeing how continuing with his goals will continue to improve Haris’s confidence and his ability to make himself understood.” The ability to communicate effectively with others

Haris Tsaoussis is shown working with speech language pathologist Sheena Kirkland. is the very foundation of a child’s social, emotional and educational development. Research has shown the first few years are the most critical period for change so early identification and intervention are absolutely key. The earlier a communication disorder is identified, the better the chances for improvement or even recovery. Because learning
is a cumulative process, difficulties early on can have a cascading effect on the rest of a child’s life. Over 60 children are connected to a speechlanguage pathologist at Reach and have ongoing services available to them. Gift of Speech 2017 donations help these children. hose who remember the record-setting TDL public hearing of 1989 and other Tsawwassen development skirmishes back in the day will undoubtedly recognize her name. As president of the powerful Tsawwassen Homeowners Association, Leone Cox was a fixture during that epic Southlands battle, as well as other land use clashes, as she did whatever she could to protect the community she fell in love with. Sadly, Tsawwassen has lost that outspoken advocate with her passing last week at the Irene Thomas Hospice. Leone and husband Douglas moved to Tsawwassen in the mid-198os when the post-tunnel building boom was giving way to a growing desire to preserve a community that had become the envy of elsewhere in the region. She quickly fell for the place she had chosen to call home and took it upon herself to do what she could to protect it. That led to the founding of the Tsawwassen Homeowners Association, an organization that not only galvanized Tsawwassenites and gave them a voice over the future of their town, but wielded a significant amount of clout in the process. It got to the point that developers would run proposals by the association before submitting them to municipal hall, knowing that if they passed muster with the THA they would have a much smoother ride through the public hearing process. Leone was at the centre of it all, but she was far from a bombastic, placardwaving protestor. Impeccably dressed and very well researched, she fought the fight on an intellectual level, using reason, persuasion and even a little scolding to get her point across to those who hadn’t yet seen the light. I remember being on the other end of some of those encounters, admonished for what this paper had, or hadn’t, written, but as much as Leone had an agenda, I also recall her being exceedingly fair. She helped usher in a new era of public engagement when it came to land use, demanding that developers and politicians alike heed the concerns of ordinary citizens. In her proper and articulate way, Leone stood up for Tsawwassen, willing to take on anyone she felt wasn’t acting in the best interests of the community. She believed in what she was doing and she made a difference. Leone Cox will be missed.
Those small acts of kindness help bring all of us together
O
utside of the commercialism and materialism of the holiday season, Christmas has a way of bringing people together. Nowhere is that more evident than in our wonderful corner of the world. Every time I step outside, someone does something to remind me why people are great. That is why, this year, I took some time to examine why small, everyday acts of kindness seem to speak to the best tendencies of humanity. What I found was very interesting. The first thing I started to notice was that all things can be broken down into a series of yes/ no statements. Is that fire hydrant red? Are my actions going to impact other people? Is the driver who just cut me off the literal incarnation of evil? There are no exceptions to this rule and, as far as I know, any apparent disagreement is a matter of miscommunication (please send me interesting counter examples, if you can). However, I am going to focus on that second question because this lies at the heart of all charity and good will: Do my actions affect other people? This is the golden rule, “Do unto others as
Community Comment NICHOLAS WONG
you would have them do unto you,” and it requires you to consider others as if they were as important as you are. It forces us to ask whether we would like to have this happen to us and the answer to that yes/no question determines whether an action is morally righteous or not. This is how the truth of all things can be evaluated. OK! We are on to something here. Somewhere at the bottom of the Christmas spirit lies our ability to think about others and it can be broken down into a series of simple yes/no questions. We also know it has something to do with our ability to look outside of ourselves and think of others. This is because there are only two ways to be in the world:
you can face outwards or turn inwards. You can think of others or you can think of yourself, but what you do determines whether you are choosing to promote life or act against it. We know, innately, that choosing to look outside of ourselves and think of other people is the better thing to do. The world beats us down and the only way that we survive is together. When you empty a jar of marbles on the floor, they bounce apart and scatter. This is the universe without life to hold it together. On the other hand, every single system of life reaches outwards and in doing so gathers more life and complexity towards it like roots growing entwined. Maybe that is what Christmas is all about: reaching outwards to draw people closer. Maybe that is love, actually. All I know is that I found a place where people think of others and want to live together, and that I love each and every one of you. Merry Christmas. Letters
TransLinkcomplaintsignored
Editor: Re: System will lose riders when they are forced to transfer, letter to the editor, Dec. 8 I agree with Malcolm Johnston that TransLink leaves much to be desired in terms of the way in which it is managing our transit system here in South Delta. For the past few years, I have been sending my feedback to TransLink about specific concerns regarding the transit system via its online portal. Then I have waited two weeks or more for a response to my specific concerns, only to be sent a “cut and paste” response from TransLink’s customer relations department.
Usually, an anonymous staff member called “Custrel” (Customer Relations) sends me information about TransLink’s 10-Year Plan, a link to the results of its latest survey, etc., but not an answer to my specific concerns. Sometimes, if I am lucky, I will get a telephone response from a transit supervisor or a TransLink planner, so that I can vent to a real person, but ultimately, nothing ever seems to change. Lately, my specific concerns have centered around several issues that are important to me: 1) the stairs on the shuttle buses, and the older 601 bus, make it difficult to carry heavy luggage onto transit
vehicles (drivers will not use the lift); 2) the 620 bus no longer stops at the two highway overpass stops going to and coming from Bridgeport, especially late at night; 3) lack of access to public washrooms at major bus hubs (Ladner Exchange) and all of the SkyTrain stations, create difficulties for people with chronic medical conditions (seniors, people with disabilities, etc.); and 4) the fact that I cannot get an e-mail response from a staff member with a real name. The last time that I was sent a “cut and paste” e-mail response, I had had it with the lack of attention to my specific concerns. I sent an e-mail response

Sunny Tsawwassen is now even bright at night
Editor: Some have said we are Sunny Tsawwassen — apparently it was even a selling point back in the early days after the tunnel was opened and Tsawwassen was starting to be developed. While I still tell friends
who live north of the tunnel that it really is sunny here more days than they experience, at this time of year I have another reason to invite them to Sunny Tsawwassen. Between the BIA and the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen, we now have Sunny Tsawwassen even

back to “Custrel,” indicating that I was going to send a copy of my e-mail to Kevin Desmond, CEO of TransLink. Of course, I did not have access to Desmond`s e-mail account, so I had to send a copy of my e-mail to him via Canada Post. In the future, I would suggest that if you are frustrated by the lack of real response to your specific concerns about TransLink, then you should contact Desmond directly by mail or social media. Perhaps if the CEO is inundated with customer complaints, it might get TransLink’s attention. Or not. But it’s worth a shot. A. Cameron

aul and Sabrina Donohoe have created a very, very bright winter wonderland with thousands of white Christmas lights in the front yard of their Tsawwassen home. How many lights make up the display? “I’ll be honest, I have no idea,” says Paul. They began work on the setup at the beginning of November, says Sabrina. It’s a family effort with their kids Olwen and Rhys, although it’s driven by the parents, she says with a laugh. The display includes many inflatables, including the Bumble abominable snowman character from the classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer animated show, candy canes and a miniature train that runs when weather permits. Their display, which takes the parents a combined 40 to 50 hours to put together, gets a little bigger each year, Paul says. Sabrina notes she was heading out earlier this

The display is at 36755A St., Tsawwassen. • Rob McLean has brought his synchronized light display to Ladner this year. He and his family recently moved to 6269 Brodie Rd. and McLean has done up a display which includes about 80 light strands synched up to three songs: Carol of the Bells, Jingle Bells and Dominick the Donkey. McLean, who works in the technology industry,
uses hardware (controller boxes) and software to create the display. The setup also includes a large Seasons’ Greetings sign, two four-foot stars and a pair of singing Christmas trees. The show runs nightly from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. and is broadcast on 87.9 FM. The display is dedicated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (jdrf. ca). • Ladner’s Patrick Jones is getting into the festive spirit with a Christmas light display sequenced to music. “Christmas is a time of family. I really wanted to make something where people could come out
with their families, bring their kids and just look at lights and have something they can enjoy,” he says. Jones has spent many hours working on the synchronized display. He even got a little help from his daughter Kaylee soldering circuit boards. “This year I’ve done a lot more of the behind the scenes kind of stuff.” He notes the show runs for about 15 minutes and includes five sequences with a variety of music. The display runs from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. nightly at 4921-44A Avenue. Tune in to 103.9 FM to listen to the music or hear it from the driveway. Here is a list of some

The case for handmade gifts this Christmas An Art-full Life
MEG & MARY ANN
At this time of year, many of us are running around with a Christmas list a mile long: toys for the kids, tokens of appreciation for teachers and school staff, gifts for coworkers and employees, and a special something for family and friends. It’s easy to be overwhelmed as we race against the clock with our already packed schedule. Finding appropriate gifts are a challenge, especially when it seems like we all have everything we need. The last thing we want is to spend money on gifts that will get their five minutes of fame and disappear into the closet or off to the donation bin. So
why don’t we get back to basics and choose to give handmade gifts this year. Giving handmade gifts allows us to give things that are unique and personal, connect us to the process of creativity, and have major social benefits. Handmade gifts are personal A handmade gift made by you or by the hands of another is truly unique. Rather than searching high and low for something our recipient will like, we can personalize our gifts to suit their needs or find some amazingly unique and unusual items that cannot be found at big box stores. Doing a little digging also encourages us to learn more about our intended recipient. What do they like to do? Cook, bake, read or listen to music? What is their favourite colour, scent or flavour? Changing the colour of a candle, the scent of soap or the pattern of a knitted garment makes each thing different and makes it so special. Making your own gifts can be more cost effec-
tive and with a plethora of DIY ideas online and in magazines, you will have no problem finding something to make for everyone. While you can produce a personalized or monogramed piece for your loved ones, you may want to find local artisans that will also tailor their item to suit your tastes and interests. Whether you speak directly to the artist at a craft fair or talk to a local shop owner who can broker your communication with a local artist, there is no doubt that you will end up with a pretty neat treasure. Tuning into someone’s interests and taking the time and effort to make something personal is a gesture that is especially impactful, shows love and consideration, and can have long lasting positive outcomes in our relationships with others. Handmade gifts connect us with the creative process It’s easy to pick up socks, chocolates or jewelry from our big box stores,

but do those items have a story to tell? Who made them? Where were they made? How were they created? What considerations were made along the way? The beauty of handmade gifts is that when we buy something from the source, we have the opportunity to weave our story into each gift along with the maker, connecting us with the creative process. Making a gift or buying a handmade gift also encourages us to use our skills, ignite our imagination and creativity and recognize the skills of others. The creative process can be therapeutic, uplifting and give us a sense of accomplishment. Buying handmade from local artists is an investment in the skills of others and also helps support our local economy. When we support local artisans, we support local businesses. As consumers, we are becoming more mindful or aware of what we buy. Many are making purchasing decisions based on how an item is made, if
it’s made from a sustainable resource, how much of an impact it has on the environment and what percentage of the sale goes directly to the maker. The more we become aware of the creative process, the more we appreciate both the time and effort that went into making it. Well-made, good quality items are made to last and will save you time and money in the long run. When we make, or buy a handmade item, skills of the craft and cultural identity are sustained, our connection to raw materials is ensured and educating the next generation of craftsmen is preserved. Handmade gifts bring people together Making connections with fellow craftspeople, creating things alongside family and friends, meeting artisans at craft fairs and connecting with local businesses for local products all work together to build strong social relationships and a close-knit community. For those who like making things for others, this is
a task you can do together. Having a gift-making day with others is a great way for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the holiday season. Whether you are making gifts for teachers, coworkers, family members or friends, making gifts is almost as fun (if not more) than giving the gifts themselves. Allow yourself to experience the joy of making gifts for others, cherish the work of others (especially children) and celebrate the skilled artist out there. Hold dear the sweater that is not quite right, the piece of pottery that is leaning or the portrait that looks like someone else. Care and thought went into the gift and that is what will be remembered. Have a wonderfully creative Christmas. Mary Ann Burrows is an artist and creativity coach at Spark Creativity Coaching. Meg Neufeld is a cultural anthropologist, practicing mixed-medium artist and program director at Alongside You in Ladner.

Tis the season to eat out and party. We are dining out more, drinking more and snacking more during the holidays. But it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom for our waistlines. Where it used to be commonly thought that the average person gains five pounds or more over the holiday period, there was actually limited data to support this statement. So, a group of researchers decided to take this to the test and found we actually gain more like a pound over the holidays (New England Journal Medicine). Before you lift that egg nog latte up to cheers this little piece of info, the researchers also found this gain is never reversed in the year ahead. If we gain a pound every year, eventually our health and waistlines will feel the impact. To help you keep that pound off, and make your January-self very happy with the choices you made in December, I have put together nine tips on how to make healthy choices when dining out: 1. Look up the menu beforehand. Know the menu ahead of time so
you can mentally preselect healthier options. 2. Have a bit of protein and healthy fats as a snack beforehand. A small handful of mixed nuts is my go-to before I go out for dinner. 3. Choose restaurants that are likely to have healthier options. If you have control over where to go, choose a restaurant that has local ingredients, farm-to-table dishes and organic food. 4. Go Paleo when eating out. Focus your meal on tasty veggies and proteins (meat or vegetarian), and eliminate problematic ingredients like refined carbohydrates in the form of pasta, rice, cheese, chips, tortilla shells and sugary ingredients. 5. Pass on the free bread basket. Pass on the breads, and the unlimited chips at your local Mexican restaurant. There are around 150 to 200 calories in most restaurant bread rolls, and then 50 calories for every half tablespoon of butter. Just tell your server to keep on walking when you see them coming towards you with a basket. 6. Fill up on salad and triple your veggies. Start your meal with a salad as an appetizer, and opt for salads with lots of greens, raw veggies and raw nuts or seeds, and an oil and vinegar dressing. Where people run into trouble is when they choose salads that are filled with delistyle sliced meats, crispy chicken or other meats, salted or roasted nuts and seeds (which are often cooked with unhealthy oils), croutons, bacon and
dressings that are high in sugar, mayonnaise and calories. Even us trainers can get duped. I once went to a popular restaurant and ordered a salmon quinoa salad, only to find out it was close to 1,200 calories. 7. Skip sugary drinks and choose alcohol wisely. This one is kinda a no–brainer, but I am also realist, so instead of saying “don’t drink alcohol” I am going to suggest that when choosing your booze, pick red wine and dark beers (since these alcohols can be good for you) or lightcoloured alcohols with mixers like soda water and fresh lime. 8. Share a main dish or create your own. Share your meal with a friend or choose two appetizers for your meal, making one of the appies a veggie side dish. You can also ask your server to box half your meal before it comes, so you automatically have a smaller meal to eat, and you have another meal for the next day. Bonus, I say. 9. Swap out for healthier. Swap out the crap with healthier choices. Example, lettuce leaves instead of a bun for hamburgers, say no to rice and yes to extra veggies, ask for condiments on the side, and as little oil as possible when preparing your protein. You can also do the “fork dip” trick for condiments and salad dressings. Dip your empty fork in the dressing and then skewer your salad. Musician to release debut single DAVE WILLIS

Ladner’s Schara Taylor Chalmers is crowdfunding to help her music career. Chalmers, 28, has been working on her debut album in the face of dealing with an undiagnosed auto immune disease. “Last year I had six sinus infections, two lung infections, a blood infection, a kidney infection…” she says. “They just don’t know what it is.” While Chalmers eventually stopped working to focus on her health, she’s now back teaching music full-time. She plans to release the debut single from her album in January on platforms like iTunes, Spotify and Soundcloud. The single, It’s Like Torture, is a breakup song, she notes. Chalmers says she enjoys being able to

KinVillage concert caps band’s busy holiday season
An eclectic, 40-member group of highly-skilled adult amateur musicians from throughout the Lower Mainland, the Delta Concert Band has been busy performing throughout the community. The group’s current Christmas performance season comes to a close on Tuesday, Dec. 19 with a concert at KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen where it will play a varied program of

Christmas favourites and other toe-tapping tunes. The band is now over 53 years old, having been formed on Oct. 29, 1964 in Ladner by a small group of community-minded musicians. Its first concert was performed the following May and the band quickly became a musical fixture at many local events. The excellence in performance that was quickly embedded in the band
during those early days has since become a longstanding tradition and signature for Delta Concert Band. It is well-known and recognized for its high standards in musical performance by its dedicated musicians. Like concert bands in general, Delta Concert Band prides itself at being able to play all types of music — swing, rock, classical, marches, musicals, movie scores or pops —
and it’s now one of the oldest community concert bands still performing in B.C. This year’s final Christmas concert for Delta Concert Band begins at 7:30 p.m. and admission is by donation. Next June the band will make a memorable trip to northern England and Scotland where it will join forces with several highcaliber local bands for joint community concerts.

Even with a dazzling 24-2-0-1 record the Delta Ice Hawks fell behind in their Tunnel Cup rivalry series with the Richmond Sockeyes after a 6-5 overtime loss last week at Minoru Arenas. The win gave Richmond a 2-1 lead in the season series. The final game is slated for Jan. 30 in Ladner.
So far so good for Ice Hawks
Delta has picked up 5 of 6 points so far in toughest stretch of the season MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The Delta Ice Hawks are navigating their way through the toughest stretch of the season as their cross-river rival tries to create a race for first place. They reached the midway point of six consecutive games against the other top five teams in the Pacific Junior Hockey League with a 5-4 win over the Grandview Steelers on Tuesday. The Hawks travel to Abbotsford tonight then have a home-and-home series with the Ridge Meadows Flames next week in their final games before the Christmas break. “We are heading into that time of year where you just want to get through it (and into the holidays) but it’s also the tough part of our schedule,” said GM and head coach Darren Naylor. “It hasn’t been our best hockey but so far we have five out of six points and we will take that for now.” Delta (24-2-0-1) is now 11 points clear of the third place Steelers (18-10-1-1) with three games in hand. Fourth place North Vancouver (17-8-0-3) is 12 back and has played one extra game. The Hawks would be in cruise control for a first place finish in the Tom Shaw Conference if it wasn’t for the Richmond Sockeyes. The hosts of the 2018 Cyclone Taylor Cup next April have been on a torrid pace for the
past month with nine consecutive wins. The results included a 3-0 win in Ladner back on Nov. 14 then a 6-5 overtime triumph against the Hawks last Thursday. That gave the Sockeyes a 2-1 lead in the regular season with the inaugural Tunnel Cup on the line. The fourth and final meeting will take place on Jan. 30 at the Ladner Leisure Centre. “I’m looking forward to playing them more. I wish we could play them all the time. They are good competitive games and they have a good hockey team. I think we are pretty evenly matched,” continued Naylor.” The Sockeyes surprised many when they parted ways with first-year head coach Steve Robinson moments before their win over Delta. Team ownership wasn’t comfortable with Robinson also coaching Seafair Minor’s top Bantam team that is currently ranked No. 1 in the province. When travel delays from a tournament in Victoria resulted in his late arrival, the club made the decision. The Sockeyes owned a 15-5-1-2 record at the time. Richmond proceeded to not only win that game but also defeat Abbotsford last Friday and Grandview Sunday with assistant and former Ice Hawk Brett Reusch behind the bench. A permanent replacement for Robinson was expected to be named this week. The Sockeyes also acquired four players prior to the league initial Dec. 1 roster
deadline, including a pair from the junior “A” ranks. They are eight points back of Delta. The Ice Hawks didn’t stand pat either — adding three of their own. Two of them — Kyle Uy and Jesse Nelson — had a goal and an assist each on Tuesday and were part of the team’s best line playing with veteran Daniel Rubin. Naylor thought more scoring depth was required as he looks at the bigger picture in two months time. Delta might have to get through Richmond in a potential first or second round conference playoff series even though they currently are the top two teams in the league. It’s also why he hinted that he isn’t finished with the roster moves as the final Jan. 9 player deadline looms. Naylor can not only offer the opportunity to help a championship contending team but the chance to play at the next level too. That’s where his recently appointed position as director of hockey operations for the BCHL’s Nanaimo Clippers is one heck of a recruiting tool. “I still have a couple of moves left with two player cards. I am not done yet,” he smiled. Icing… • Rookie goaltender Jordy Engleson is expected to get his first start since Nov. 28 in Abbotsford. Jordan Naylor has been in net for the past four games.

DHA Greens perfect at WHL Bantam Prep Showcase MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta Hockey Academy’s Green team thrived on home ice last weekend — rolling to a perfect record at the inaugural Canadian Sport School Hockey League/Western Hockey League Bantam Prep Showcase at Planet Ice. The three-day event featured eight teams — all from the CSSHL. The DHA Greens opened the event with a 5-1 victory on Friday over Notre Dame. The hosts limited the Saskatchewan school to just 10 shots while scoring four unanswered goals to break a 1-1 second period deadlock. It was then a pair of wins on Saturday as Delta outlasted the OHA Edmonton 7-6 in a shootout and rolled past Northern Alberta 5-1. Surrey’s Holden Cardinal scored the shootout winner, while Abbotsford’s Cole Savage turned back two of
Edmonton’s attempts, making 28 saves in a relief role. Delta scored three unanswered goals to tie the game, including Richmond’s Sammy May with 1:51 remaining. Savage turned aside 31 shots in the win over Northern Alberta. The Greens then capped their weekend with a dominating 8-1 triumph over the Edge on Sunday morning. Kai Daniells led the way against the Calgary school with two goals and one assist. Matt Smith (Edmonton) and Quinn Messer (North Delta) added a goal and two assists each. DHA’s White team finished the showcase with a 2-2 record. After falling 6-2 to OHA Edmonton on Friday, Delta slipped past Notre Dame 4-3 in a shootout. North Delta’s Mark Thurston scored the game winner, while goaltender Nathan Kirkpatrick (Surrey) turned aside all three Notre Dame attempts. Mateo
Mrsic (Surrey) scored twice in regulation. A 6-4 win over the Edge on Saturday afternoon was highlighted by a pair of goals from Kamloops native Mathew Ward. Delta then closed out the Showcase with a 6-5 loss in overtime to Northern Alberta. Thurston had a pair of goals and three points. Cloverdale’s Roan Clarke made 31 saves. The DHA teams are now idle from CSSHL play until January. They both are headed to Burnaby to compete in the Bantam AAA Elite Division at the Pat Quinn Classic — Dec. 27-30. The competition will include Dallas Stars Elite, Arizona Bobcats, San Jose Jr. Sharks, Rocky Mountain Roughriders and the current No. 1 ranked Bantam minor hockey association team in B.C. — Seafair Islanders. DHA Greens are the defending Bantam Elite champions.
Delta Hockey Academy’s Green team went 4-0-0 at the inaugural WHL/CSSHL Bantam Prep Showcase held at Planet Ice.
