Volunteers gathered at the Paridon Horticultural warehouse in East Delta this week to fill hundreds of Christmas food hampers. The hampers are scheduled to be delivered tomorrow.
‘Rock stars’ at work again Volunteer force creates approximately 600 hampers in annual program DAVE WILLIS

The Paridon Horticultural Ltd. warehouse in East Delta once again served as the hub for Deltassist’s annual Christmas hamper program. Bob Taggart, part of a team of volunteer coordinators that included Brian Rainbow, Phil Easdown, David Fredricksen and David Olson, noted the warehouse opens its doors for the hamper effort well ahead of Christmas. “Without them we’d be lost,” he says, wanting to extend thanks to Paridon. Volunteers sort and distribute hundreds of food hampers to less fortunate families throughout Delta as part of the program. The hampers, approximately 600 this year, are
set to be delivered tomorrow. Taggart, a longtime volunteer, says it’s fantastic to see people come together to help the less fortunate. “I think that’s why everybody’s here,” he says, noting it’s typical to see people keep coming back to help after initially volunteering. This year the need is down (a reflection that the economy has picked up and more people are working) and there have been more food donations, says Fredricksen. “It’s a happy story, to me,” he says. Extra food will be passed along to the food bank. Many of the volunteers are local service club members. They make food pickups, sort through the

Owen inundated with cards as total approaching 2,000 Mom overwhelmed by number of Christmas messages DAVE WILLIS

The Christmas cards came pouring in for sixyear-old Owen Hill Davie this holiday season. His family put a call out for cards which are “the perfect gift for him,” said his mom Stephanie Hill Davie.
“He loves things that are light, that he can carry. He likes the way paper crinkles in his hands,” she said. Owen, who’s dealing with a host of medical issues, has received cards from far-away places like Australia, England, Germany, Ireland and Russia. But the majority of the
1,978 cards he’s received as of Wednesday have come from the Delta area. “It’s an overwhelming response and we’re so appreciative for everyone taking time to send something to our little guy,” said Hill Davie. When cards arrive in the mail they pick somewhere cozy to sit, either
the couch, in front of the Christmas tree, or the bed, since the youngster has been quite ill this holiday season, and each one is opened up and read to Owen. “He physically touches every single card,” said Hill Davie. She said people’s messages have included shar-

Kids will find gifts under the tree thanks to Toy Depot Deltassist program turns the East Delta Hall into toy store DAVE WILLIS
d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Approximately 700 local kids will have a brighter Christmas thanks to the Deltassist Toy Depot. The annual program, put on to help low-income families during the holidays, was held over a three-day stretch earlier this month at the East Delta Hall. Volunteers played a big role in the Toy Depot, says Deltassist community services coordinator Colleen Danes. “If it wasn’t for the volunteers, we couldn’t do this,” she says. They put in hundreds of hours helping with the set up at the hall, assisting clients and then doing clean-up.
Longtime volunteer Alice Barnes from Ladner says set up went smoothly with people working at a quick pace. Asked why she keeps coming back year after year, she says, “Wouldn’t you? Look at it all. It’s just so much fun. It’s nice to see, it’s the spirit of Christmas, isn’t it?” Tsawwassen’s Donna Clark, who volunteers at the pajama table, says seeing clients’ smiling faces when they find something special for their child is very rewarding. “It really warms my heart,” she says. Hours were extended on two of the three days, making life easier for organizers, volunteers and clients, says Danes. The toys at the Toy

The Segal family of Ladner has seen demand for its sock slippers skyrocket after they were included on Oprah’s Favorite Things List for 2017.
Ladnerfamilycreates one of Oprah’s faves PUDUS makes Favorite Things List for 2017 IAN JACQUES

A Richmond-based company run by a Ladner family is singing the praises of Oprah Winfrey after one of its products was recently selected for Oprah’s Favorite Things List 2017. PUDUS (pronounced poodos) — the ultimate slipper sock guaranteed to wrap your feet in warmth and comfort — was featured in the December issue of O, The Oprah Magazine. “I put on these cozy sock slippers for the Favorite Things shoot, and loved them! So will anyone you give them to, from toddlers to grandmas,” said Oprah in the magazine. PUDUS was founded in 2015 by the Segal family (Dr. Jean Segal, wife Randi, daughter Haylie and son Brandon) who also developed a fashionable version of compression socks in 2012. Randi, Brandon and Haylie work on various aspects of the company, while Dr. Segal, a surgeon at Delta Hospital, serves as medical advisor. “It was pretty amazing when they decided to feature our product.
Oprah has been wonderful for us,” said Haylie. “Our product has skyrocketed everywhere. We are just so fortunate and excited about her featuring it. We couldn’t have asked for anything more than publicity from someone like Oprah.”
According to the company’s website, the PUDUS Classic Collection unites more than 40 vibrant designs to an elevated level of softness. Available in three sizes from toddler to adult, PUDUS extra-soft, animalfriendly fleece and hightraction silicone grippers provide comfort at every step. “All of our retailers have been doing really well. Amazon, our website, it has just pushed the
product all across North America really,” said Haylie. “This is an entirely different product. We had an idea and decided we wanted to go for it again, so we used what we learned with the compression socks and built two different brands alongside each other.” Haylie said the idea behind PUDUS is a simple one. “Everyone loves slippers. Everyone wants to feel comfy. We started with the compression socks and now we have branched out into some outerwear as well, but we wanted everyone to feel warm and cozy. Slippers are a great gift and we just went with it,” she said. “Both brands are growing exponentially every year which has been very exciting for us. With everything that has been happening with Oprah, there is lots to come with both products.” The family appeared on Dragon’s Den in 2015 to showcase the compression socks. Haylie and Brandon live in Richmond, but Jean and Randi still live in Ladner. Both Brandon and Haylie grew up in Ladner and graduated from Delta Secondary.

Foreign workers enjoy Christmas feast
Latino Workers Ministry gets help from Cedar Park Church and Nando’s to stage banquet IAN JACQUES

Being thousands of kilometres away from your family and friends can be tough at the best of times, but you can imagine it can be even more difficult at Christmas. But thanks to several community-minded folks and businesses, temporary foreign workers from Mexico and Guatemala who are employed at the numerous greenhouses in Delta were treated to a wonderful Christmas experience last Saturday in Ladner. Kim Pelen and husband Jon David Pelen started Latino Workers Ministry two years ago to help support the Mexican and Guatemalan workers. “We are financially supported only by donations. My husband, being Guatemalan himself, earned the respect and trust of the workers and employees,” said Kim. “We help with translating at doctors and dentist appointments, bringing the workers to the leisure centre for recreation, teaching English and supporting their spiritual needs. Our goal is to help give a work-life balance while they are here working.” She said their church, Cedar Park in Ladner, has been overwhelmingly supportive. Last Christmas, the Pelens, through volunteers

Last Saturday, they hosted a Christmas banquet for 60 workers, handed out more gift baskets and will be delivering 60 more to
other greenhouses in the days ahead. Kim said the banquet was extra special thanks to a wonderful donation from Nando’s at Tsawwassen
Commons. “We went into Nando’s a few weeks ago just looking for a gift card and the management said they wanted to do more and

cater the whole event,” recalled Jon David. “We were just blown away.” Kim added that when the workers found out that
Nando’s was there to serve them, their faces lit up. “They all know Nando’s — it’s their favourite restaurant,” she shared. “Nando’s didn’t just prepare the food, but they served it and then went around to the tables to make sure everyone had what they needed. Before they left we had the team come to the stage and a representative from each greenhouse shared a word of thanks for the event in general and, of course, the meal.” She said more than than 40 volunteers came to help. “It was more than we needed but shows how people in the community want to be involved,” Kim said. “It really helped create an atmosphere for togetherness and welcome.” Kim said a select group of workers have been meeting weekly for Bible study with Jon David and together they prepared songs to entertain during the evening. “At the end we all joined in to sing Feliz Navidad. My husband and I set the idea in motion but it took the community to put it together and our expectations we far surpassed,” she said. “It’s a big difference in culture here and they [the workers] are missing Christmas with their families, so this is a way to help bring Christmas and a bit of home.”

t’s Christmas time, which means, unfortunately, I have to go inside. I do my share when it comes to domestic chores, but after 25 years of marriage the lines have become pretty well defined, and one of those thresholds I do my absolute best not to cross is the one that involves shopping. I’ll occasionally go to a store -- Pets-N-Us to get food for the dog or Home Hardware to get more Christmas lights -- but these are missions with a singular goal, where I know exactly what I’m after, so they’re devoid of even a hint of browsing. The problem is that doesn’t cut it at Christmas. Shopping for my son is a relatively painless exercise as I’m largely reduced to a package-carrying wingman, but when I’m on my own in search of gifts for my wife, I must venture inside and peruse the merchandise, which is when things tend to go off the rails. Now, I must make it perfectly clear that my wife doesn’t expect much. It’s quite the opposite, in fact, and I like to take a little credit for that because I’ve done a pretty good job of reducing her expectations over the years. My wife knows I’m shopping challenged so she tries to provide some direction, to the point this year we decided to exchange lists. Nothing on her list is expensive or difficult to find, but the ironic part is that many of the items are so common, and available in such variety, it makes it darn near impossible to choose. Or should I say, choose the appropriate one. Take a scarf, for instance. The list calls for a “pretty” one, which I know means to look for one that’s decorative rather than intended to keep you warm, but that only narrows it down so much, leaving way too much open for interpretation in a language I don’t speak. There’s the very real danger that one person’s “pretty” could well be another’s “ugly.” Socks don’t necessarily pose challenges fashion-wise, but I’ve learned over the years you can buy ones that go too far up the calf or are too thick to fit in shoes. A sweatshirt? Well, at least there aren’t too many of those out there to choose from. There’s absolutely no doubt that my wife will find what’s on her list under the tree on Christmas morning. Whether it’s what she was hoping for is a whole other story.
Recent encounters reinforce notion Christmas is for kids

f you are like me, you may have channeled your inner Druid yesterday morning. Yes, the winter solstice arrived at 6:35 a.m. Thank you solar system, you are the best. The days are getting longer and I am pretty darn happy for that. “Yule” as it was known in ancient Germanic and Scandinavian cultures was essentially a celebration of what was to come. Fir tree boughs were used to represent the approaching spring and there is a correlation between the wacky Roman calendar, Christ Mass and the winter solstice. Christmas is celebrated by many cultures but its secular beginnings, borne of Pagan roots, have been slowly slipping out of the equation, losing priority to the apparently far more powerful force of capitalism and its blood brother commercialism. Pew Research recently published a study that “finds that most U.S. adults believe the religious aspects of Christmas are emphasized less now than in the past — even as relatively few Americans are bothered by this trend.” Although you would hope that this not be the case in Canada, that trend is likely the same here and elsewhere. With Black Fridays, Red Thursdays, Cyber Mondays, constant ‘blowouts” and Boxing Day/

week/month sales, you can see how many of us can become distracted. Everyone can attest to some of the stress and anxiety the season presents, but focusing on the fun aspects of this time of year is a good way to stickhandle through the angst. Even if we do not have an affinity for the secular aspects of Christmas, I am sure we can all agree that getting together with loved ones is the key to enjoying the celebration. Another certainty is that Christmas is for kids. Some of my fondest memories are from family Christmases of yesteryear, both as a kid and as a parent, and I presume this is true for you too. I have been particularly lucky the past couple of weeks to visit schools and talk to the kids about food-related topics, but also to
ask them about their plans for Christmas. The primary kids have been bouncing off the walls lately, but it has been so heartwarming to hear what they are going to do, eat and to hear what they think the big man will haul down the chimney for them on Sunday night. I have received some adorable Christmas cards from the young farmers and have learned some nutritional tricks along the way. I always bring veggie snacks for the youngsters. Reindeer food has been on the menu of late. It is amazing to see how many pieces of carrot and celery the kids can eat when they are told that eating lots of veggies makes the reindeer fly. I’m hoping they are all surrounded by the warmth and love of their friends and families so they too can look back fondly on these days as some of the best of their lives and eventually recreate the feeling for their own children one day. In a few days all of the hype and stress will go away but the memories will remain to savour. I’m looking forward to a great 2018 and I hope you are too. Merry Christmas everybody! Letters
South Deltans pretty well served by transit Editor: Re: System will lose riders when they are forced to transfer, letter to the editor, Dec. 8 Malcolm Johnston can’t be serious about wanting that single 602 straight through to downtown. I rode that unpredictable beast daily for close to 20 years to my Yaletown office and I am more than overjoyed to catch the Canada Line at Bridgeport. You say the Canada Line adds 30 minutes over the bus? C’mon, that’s not even close. The direct 602 bus was unpredictable, subject to all the congestion between Oak Street Bridge and Pender Street. There were far too many days to count where I stood shivering in the cold
rain at the corner of Davie and Howe, waiting for the 602 to wind itself through the commuter mess. One thing is true, though, you could get on and have a nice long sleep, often close to an hour and a half on many days. TransLink listened to commuters on its proposed plan to remove the 602 to optimize the system. That was a very pleasant surprise to be heard. What’s to grumble about? Ticketing has never been easier and the bus drivers I see daily are cordial. Ask someone about Branko, the driver with fresh flowers on his fare box. Sure, there are the odd grumpy ones but you sound pretty grumpy as well. Wink, wink.
The trip home is predictable and reliable. Yes, there are the odd times that buses get caught in the tunnel congestion but that happens maybe two to three times a month. I set my daily wrist watch to leave the office at the same time and that 602 is usually there waiting for me. Just think of the uncertainty associated with driving in that mess. Bridgeport Station isn’t the international arrivals deck at YVR but it’s hardly an “ugly, cold and unfriendly place.” Quite contrary to Johnston’s perspective, my view is that daily commuters from South Delta are quite well treated. During morning rush hour from 6 to 9 a.m. there are 21 buses
leaving the recreation centre (602, 603 and 604). During the journey south at the end of the day there are also 21 buses leaving Bridgeport Station. Geez, it’s not a limo service but that’s a lot of options. And these numbers don’t account for that somewhat tedious option of taking the new 601 route that winds its way around the new mall and through lovely Ladner. If you were to choose the prolonged joy of the 601, you have an additional 17 runs in the morning rush and 15 coming south in the afternoon. I agree, though, there is much room for improvement at TransLink. The better the service, the lesser the degree of car congestion that tortures
those that have to or chose to drive. I do pity those that have to deal with the unpredictability of the antiquated Expo/Millennium lines, breaking down almost weekly. Add the sad souls sardined into any of the endless stream of articulated buses on the B-line heading east or west down Broadway. These folks are certainly the ones to complain, as do those where transit is just not available. Complain away folks, but really, relatively speaking, those of us in South Delta have it pretty darn good. Let’s not be complacent but really, let’s get real. Geoff Flamank
Greens should let government fall over Site C decision
Editor: I supported the BC Green Party this year financially for the first time. I have voted Green candidates for several years. I am more disappointed than I can say with the Greens’ choice to throw my vote in with the NDP. If I had wanted the NDP in power, I would have voted for them. I believe the Greens need to stand up and tell the NDP that they either
abandon the Site C project or they will vote against the government at the first opportunity. The Greens would be a hero to the right, the left and the centre. I am not an environmental activist. I am a financial realist. The construction of the Site C project is financially irresponsible in every single way: • The power will never be needed. • It will increase the cost
of power for those who use power from BC Hydro. • It will increase the taxes of the citizens of B.C. to cover the interest and capital repayment for the next 70 years. The Greens know this, I know this and anyone with any idea about finances knows this. People and corporations are already turning to alternate sources of power. Both are already selling their excess power on the grid. Solar technology is
readily available for everyone and with improvement in technology will come increased use. The technology of the dam is old, outdated and costly. Individuals are already switching to solar to create their own power and selling their excess to the grid. Soon, if you have a roof, you will have solar power. I live in a condo. We will, within the next few years, be switching to solar to power all common
areas. Why? Fast payback, reduced overall costs, elimination of reliance on BC Hydro and elimination of the risk of much higher Hydro costs in the future. I’m asking the Greens to reconsider their position. It is not enough to say you are against the construction of the Site C dam. You must say you are against the construction and that you are prepared to see the government fall on the issue. L. Marie Vermeulen
Forget bridge, ask Santa for world peace or to eliminate poverty
Editor: I beg you not to publish any more combinations of bridge/tunnel debate and Santa Claus. For any children reading this, no, Santa Claus does not bring grown-ups very large
items used to carry cars and trucks over or through bodies of water. Santa is not for grownups. He is the spirit of Christmas, and in my belief the spirit of all the world religions which cel-
ebrate the coming of the light at the solstice. Santa is about magic and love. He listens from the heart to young voices. You can ask him for something special for Christmas without fear of finding a bridge
pylon on your front lawn. If an adult wants to write or talk to Santa, what about asking him for world peace, elimination of poverty and violence, or kindness to all? Or, just saying: thank you for everything

Highways need help
Editor: My wife and I are residents of Delta and recently drove east to Abbotsford on two separate occasions. Once we reached the 200th Street interchange at Langley we were forced to stop as the two-lane mid-day traffic was bumper-to-bumper all the way to the first turnoff into Abbotsford. Upon our return heading west, traffic was once again at a standstill until we got back to 200th Street. We have better things to do with our time than spend hours and hours in traffic. Surely Premier John Horgan is planning to re-start the widening of this very congested corridor to three lanes as the current situation is totally unacceptable. Time to get up with the times, Mr. Premier. Believe it or not, infrastructure improvements are a necessity in this day and age, particularly with ongoing increases in population, immigration, etc. The NDP’s decision to suspend construction on the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project was bad enough but now stopping this highway widening project is totally ridiculous. It must be unbearable for people that live with this on a daily basis. Improving social programs, schools and hospitals are not the only things that need attention. Garry Nash

Whether they’ve recently lost a loved one or don’t have a place to go home to, the holidays can be a painful time. Luckily, Delta is home to a variety of social service agencies that reach out to vulnerable people in our community. The South Delta Food Bank, Little House Society, Deltassist, and the Boys and Girls Club Foundation are examples of such organizations. I encourage you to consider making a donation to support their important programs and services. Also consider giving your loved ones gifts that don’t come in fancy wrapping paper or boxes. I’m talking about the gifts of your time, energy and compassion which can

I think we all feel blessed to live in a community like Delta South. It’s a beautiful place to live, work and raise a family — and its best feature is undoubtedly its people. I’ve lived here for more than 60 years, and have come to know it as a place where help is never hard to find when needed. That’s especially important at this time of year. As we gather with our families and friends to enjoy each other’s company and a few great meals, let’s think about those who have a harder time finding joy each Christmas.

Of course, if you’re one of those people who gets a thrill out of watching someone’s face light up as they unwrap a gift, consider buying local this Christmas. Delta is blessed with so many unique small businesses and talented agri-food producers whose goods make fantastic gifts this time of year. Buying local supports our hardworking entrepreneurs and farm families, as well as our local economy. From my family to yours, Merry Christmas and all the best in 2018!

OWL is dealing with increase in owls suffering from poisoning SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Something is poisoning owls. Staff at Delta’s Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) say they’re seeing increasing cases of birds of prey, particularly barred owls, suffering from poisoning. Several sick owls at the 72nd Street rescue facility are believed to have eaten rats and mice that have ingested rodenticides. Noting rodenticides are something people should avoid using, education coordinator Jen Picker said owls suffering from poisoning has been an ongoing concern, but it seems to be on the upswing with the loss of natural habitat areas, which has resulted in more barred owls seen in urban centres. “It cropped up in Vancouver because there were barred owls being spotted within town, as opposed to a forest. Because of all of the habitat loss, the rodents have nowhere to go, they’ve
gone to the people. And, instead of combatting it, everyone is leaning to poison,” said Picker. “Right now, and Surrey is a prime example, the young owls, once they learn how to catch their own food, have to go get their own territory because the adults hold onto their territory. There’s no territory to go to, Surrey is annihilated. So, Vancouver, like the rest of the PHOTO COURTESY OF OWL Lower Mainland, Staff members at Delta’s is not far. There’s Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation nowhere to go to Society are trying to save this Vancouver either, so barred owl believed to be sufferpeople are seeing ing from rodenticide poisoning. these barred owls take effect, which means perched up on trees rodents will become uncoand buildings on busy ordinated and slow down, streets. It’s those young making them easy prey ones we’re getting in care because the older ones are for raptors. Unfortunately, still holding onto their ter- those raptors then also become ill and it takes ritory in the forests.” Picker said rodenticides them a few days to die. She added birds need aren’t target-specific, so to be found early enough other animals end up to have the best chance, digesting the poisons. however, they can’t get They also take days to
birds at the shelter until they’re unable to fly. Martina Versteeg, a raptor care specialist at OWL, said two birds currently at the facility are suspected of being poisoned and a third just died. “We look for signs of poisoning but even they come in with a broken wing, having hit a window, when they have poison in their body it makes them a little bit slower and their reaction time is less. It’s like they’re drunk and stumble because they’re just not feeling well. In a lot of cases that we have in care, I’m sure most of them have some sort of residue anyway,” she said. “Now, we’re finding really high concentrations. The poisons they’re putting out these days takes longer to kill them and does more damage, so we’re dealing with all generations of rat poisons.” OWL has an information page on its website (http://www.owlrehab. org/dangers/rat-poison/) informing people of the alternatives to using rat poison.
Everyone meet Chipper! Chipper is a 6-7 year old male pitbull mix and 65lbs. He is good with other dogs, but no kitties for him as they are too fun to chase. Chipper was badly abused and is painfully shy. He is never reactive, but when scared can growl asking for space. He is very sweet and would be good in a calm home with not a lot of people coming in and out constantly. He is great with kids, loves to be with them ❤ He needs someone who has the patience to let him come out of his shell at his own pace. He is crate trained, house broken and good on leash. He is medium energy and a good walk a day and snuggles afterwards would suffice. As with all our dogs, he is neutered and up to date on all shots and vaccines. If you think this sweet boy is a good match for you, please email us at pbandchi@gmail.com

Delta man killed in Richmond crash
Notorious stretch of River Road has been dubbed Misery Mile ALAN CAMPBELL
Ri c h m o n d N e w s
Richmond RCMP are investigating after yet another fatal crash on one of the city’s most notorious stretches of road. At around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday — at the peak of that morning’s snowfall — police were called to the area of River and No. 8 roads after a report that a car had collided with a hydro pole and slid off the road. On arrival, officers discovered a white 2006 Acura sedan was partially submerged in a ditch. The driver, a 45-year old male from Delta, had managed to escape from the vehicle and his 37-year-old passenger, also from Delta, was rescued with the help of the driver and good Samaritans. However, the passenger, according to police, required life-saving first aid. Both occupants of the car were taken to hospital by paramedics but, by late afternoon, the passenger had succumbed to his injuries. Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be factors in the crash, with road conditions being suspected at the moment. The Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit (RSU) is investigating the fatal accident. If anyone has information or dashcam footage on the incident, police would like you to contact Const. George, of the Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit, at 604-2781212. Workers in the area have repeatedly called for safety improvements to the stretch of River Road, between No. 7 Road and Westminster Highway, after having to pull stricken drivers from spun-out
cars, over-turned in waterfilled ditches. The Richmond News reported in September how the City of Richmond — contrary to what the majority of area residents wanted — was planning to install 20 “cushioned” speed humps on the exact same section of road in a bid to alleviate major safety issues. Earlier this year, the News reported how, in the last, eastern-most mile of River Road alone, there have been five drivingrelated deaths from 2013 to 2016. One of those deaths was that of 33-year-old cyclist Brad Dean, who was killed in November 2016 after his cycling group was allegedly hit head-on by a car driven by Michael Wing Sing Fan. Fan has since been charged with driving without due care and attention and has yet to make a plea in court. As part of a city-led consultation process about road improvements, residents had called for more police enforcement of the posted 50 km/h speed limit on the stretch, which has long been considered as one of the most dangerous in Richmond, especially for cyclists. Although taking note of the residents’ concerns about noise and safety caused by potential speed humps, city staff cited that car and truck speeds in the area cannot be tempered by enforcement alone. And a report and recommendation, approved by city council, described how the proposed humps have been very effective on the southern stretch of Gilbert Road, close to Dyke Road, without any damage to vehicles, while allowing them to travel at the speed limit. Along with associated
signage, the cost of installing the 20 speed humps is $100,000, which will come from the city’s traffic calming program. As well as the speed humps, the city has already completed installing new “single file” signage and dashed, single yellow road markings. “Caution” signs are also expected to be finished soon, to advise motorists when to expect large volumes of cyclists on the road, usually during weekends. Tragic toll: • Nov. 6, 2016: Cyclist Brad Dean died and two more cyclists were
seriously injured after they were hit head-on by a car travelling east in the 23000-block of River Road. • Dec. 14, 2015: A 47-year-old man died after the car he was driving slammed into the support pillars of a train trestle in the 20000-block of River Road. • Sept. 7, 2014: A driver died after his vehicle flipped over in the 22100-block of River Road and landed upside down in the Fraser. • July 17, 2013: A vehicle carrying four occupants between the ages of 18 to 21 was travelling eastbound in the

Christmas is a very painful time for many. Grief, financial stress, family tension and health concerns can all turn this season from joy to despair. If this describes you, you’re not alone. Christmas had lost any joy for him, and he sometimes wondered if he would survive his own grief. Two years earlier he had lost his wife in a freak fire that left him badly scarred. His nation was embroiled in a bloody civil war. Just weeks earlier, his oldest son had been seriously wounded in the war. On Christmas day, 1863, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote a poem titled, “Christmas Bells,” that expressed both despair and hope. It was about how church bells at

Christmas rang out their message of peace. It was later put to music and retitled “I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day.” As he thought about his own pain and darkness, he wrote: “And in despair I bowed my head; ‘There is no peace on earth,’ I said; ‘For hate is strong, And mocks the song Of
peace on earth, good-will to men!’” But the poem doesn’t end in despair. He finished with: “Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: ‘God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men.’” This is the hope and promise of Christmas. God became one of us. He was born like us, lived with us and died for us. The message that first Christmas night still gives us hope today: “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” (Luke 2:10–11, NIV) You can reach Mike at mike@ladnerbaptist.ca.

fter years of editing Ladner’s Ann Westlake has published a book of her own. Sudden Arrival: Sudden Departure – The Twin Left Behind a True Story of Loss and Rebirth is a selfhelp book on grieving and recovery with a positive note to it, she explains. The book is based on her own life, says Westlake, whose identical twin sister Kathryn passed away in 1999 at age 45 due to an aneurysm. “I miss her dearly still, but I know I have finished grieving for her not being there,” says Westlake, who has run her own book editing business for 25 years. Westlake spent two years working on the book, which started out as a personal journey. She was sparked to begin the project after seeing a post on Facebook one morning about death. “It woke me up,” says Westlake, who majored in

After nearly four decades Jane Pallan is stepping away from the Ladner Glee Club. “It’s been a joy in my life. I loved working with all the women,” she says. Pallan, who’s had health issues recently, served as pianist and conductor for the most part. The all-women singing group traditionally performed two concert series a year, one in the springtime and the other in winter. Pallan is unsure whether the group will continue. “I just have fond memories of the whole thing. We practice on Mondays. To get up Monday morning and to go with this lovely group of women to sing has always been a great start to the week, not only

The club, which has entertained audiences at local care facilities like Westshore Laylum and Mountain View Manor, practiced out of Pallan’s home for many years before holding its rehearsals at Ladner United Church.
She’s also a former music minister at the local church. Singing is good for the mind, body and soul, she says. Liz Miller, a member of the group for 13 years, says it takes a good musical ear and isn’t easy to play the piano and conduct at the same time. Pallan is “very gifted musically,” Miller says.

While strapped into webbed soles, we waddle over the blanket of freshly fallen snow. Beams from trusty headlamps ignite the way and reflect onto powder pathways that shimmer like glitter. The illumination is augmented by the star-studded sky, and aside from my laborious breathing, the night is still, peaceful and serene. The evening snowshoeing tour is just one of the wintertime wonders that we experience during our visit to Vancouver Island’s year-round destination of Mount Washington. A vast expanse of undulating terrain is specifically designated for the brisk walk in the wilderness, and an additional 55 kilometers of well-groomed track meanders into Strathcona Provincial Park, attracting skiers that range from Nordic neophytes to cross country champions. While hoofing up hills and brushing up to frosted evergreens, my heart rate accelerates and beads of

A snowshoer enjoys the fresh powder at Mount Washington on Vancouver Island. perspiration trickle from my brow. “This stroll is more like a cardio circuit,” Brent affirms, “and it’s working up a ferocious appetite.” We soon discover that Mount Washington has considered this common after-effect, for when we return to the Raven Lodge, a multi-course fondue feast is served. Table tea lights and a flickering fire cast an inviting glow over the upper floor of the impressive post and beam treasure,
magically transforming it from a daytime bistro to a fine dining establishment. Silver service accompanies sophisticated presentations, and while dipping into Gruyere cheese and Belgium chocolate, we share powder tales with our new snowshoeing comrades. As well as the impressive Nordic facilities, mountain lovers are also drawn to the resort’s 300metre natural luge track, a lift-accessed tube run, two terrain parks, a half pipe
and popular mountaingeared weekend events. Onsite accommodations vary, and whether in search of a cozy chalet, two-storey townhouse or on-slope condo, there’s something in the pool of 3,500 beds to meet the need. A taste of old-world tranquility and charm can be discovered during a stay in the original alpine village, where pedestrian pathways lace between more than 50 hillside residences. Although only accessi-
ble in winter by Snow Cat, bobsled, a pair of boots or skis, kids have a hay day at play while the cars (and their fumes) remain at bay in the lower parking lot. Townhomes and condominiums grace the drive-in accessible routes of the newer alpine village and any one of the multileveled homes that line Foster Lane will provide a truly upscale escape. Runs funnel down to bustling Alpine Lodge where the connecting Bradley Centre takes credit
for being one of the largest ski rental facilities of any B.C. resort. Although skis used to be as comfortable on my feet as a pair of well-worn slippers, the old muscles just don’t seem to be as reliable, or pliable, as they once were. Needless to say, I have my doubts as we prepare for the plunge. Adrenaline rushes through my veins as we buckle, snap, zip-up and then glide. And after prodding through the turnstiles like thoroughbreds at a starting gate, we’re whisked away in six packs and quartets to mile-high summits. A fresh snowfall envelopes the 1,200 acres where 50 ski trails range from broad, scenic cat tracks to steep mogul mine fields. And while escalating to what appears like the heavens, my heart palpates with anticipation of the downward descent. Community dances once part of Delta social scene
The Delta Museum and Archives Society recently launched Our Delta Stories, a project that asks community members to share their favourite Delta story in 250 words or less. The stories will be posted to the society’s social media pages and website, while some will also be printed in the Optimist. Here’s the latest: Throughout its history, Delta has been a community with a busy social scene. In the 1940s, community dances were regular occurrences sponsored by the IODE, the Kinsmen, the Legion, the Chilukthan Rebecca Lodge and many other community associations and service clubs. Some had themes like the Gingham Dance, the Gay Nineties and the Hayseed Ball. Some celebrated special dates like the IODE’s 1948 New Year’s Eve Ball that had 750 attendees! And some were just plain old dances. They all featured live music including such

The Night Before Christmas Twas the night before Christmas and all through the store The prices were lowered like never before. The sew foam was waiting for just the right home While vinyls and leather were matched for their tone. Tack hammers and pliers were stacked on the shelf With hopes that some trimmer would buy for himself. The roll goods were lined up like little tin men As I walked by so slowly I turned down the bend. I turned very slowly craning by head I saw what I wanted A vinyl in red! I knew it was Christmas tops weren’t in style But springtime would be here in just a short while. I am always impressed

As I hung up the phone I heard such a chatter I went straight outside to see what was the matter. And what to my wondering eyes should appear But Rob Nelson himself and eight tiny reindeer! “What service!” I exclaimed as he dropped off my order He had one more stop and asked “Which way to the border?” Then he sprang to his sleigh to his team gave a whistle And away they all flew like a down of thistle. I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight...

Invaders fill stockings for less fortunate
Recognizing there are people in need in the community, members of the 2004 South Delta Invaders girls fastpitch team decided to pool their money to stuff stockings for girls their age.
The girls literally “Invaded” Walmart, stretching their dollars to buy cosmetics, candy, chocolate, scarves, gloves and other special items. They ended up filling six massive stockings that will
be donated to Deltassist to give to families. “Nothing makes me more proud than to see these girls get together to do something for others,” says head coach Ed Selinger. “They had huge
smiles on their faces while they shopped, sorted and then filled the stockings. They learned through this experience that giving is way more rewarding than receiving and that helping others is a gift in itself.”

Record crowd at Community Kitchen Xmas dinner
The eighth annual Christmas dinner organized by the Ladner Community Kitchen drew a record crowd of 140 guests this year. The dinner was held at the Ladner Christian Fellowship and, as usual, emceed by Pastor Danny Stebeck. Sponsored by the Delta police, the event had Delta Police Pipe Band piper Jamie Thomson kick off the evening with his stirring sounds on the pipes, followed by two talented ladies, Lyn Vera-Lay leading the carols and Pat Rogers on piano. Organizer Jini Aroon says she is grateful for the generous support that was offered by many community volunteers and partners. Donors included the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen, Lions Club of Tsawwassen/ Boundary Bay, Delta Secondary Interact Club, Beta Sigma Psi Sorority of Tsawwassen, Thelma Hamilton, Fresh Start Foods Richmond, Grove Crest Farms in Ladner, Save-on-Foods in Ladner and Ladner Safeway. Happy Holidays and Thank You! The holidays are upon us and one common theme that prevails, whether you are celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah or other special days, is the spirit of giving and receiving. At the Hospice Cottage Charity Shoppe, the Harold & Veronica Savage Centre for Supportive Care and the Irene Thomas Hospice, we feel the spirit of giving and receiving all year long. Each day we see the extraordinary generosity of our community, which in turn helps to make a difference in the lives of families, friends and neighbors.

Christmas cheer and the spirit of giving was certainly on display recently at the Ladner Community Centre. Thanks to the generosity of South Deltans, the annual Women Helping Women campaign was a huge success again this year. “This year we received an additional 200 requests and we were a little worried a week away from our packing day as donations had been lower than usual,” said campaign organizer Pindi Mann. “We understand that donors are asked to support many great causes at this time of year and we never want to take away from the good work those groups are doing. We didn’t think we would make our target, but to our amazement, two days before the deadline everything changed.” Mann said they received an incredible amount of donations so not only did they meet their target, but were able to exceed it by making a total of 860 gift bags loaded with self-care items. The bags were distributed to 26 programs/facilities in Delta, Richmond, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Mission and Vancouver. “We are so very grateful for the support we receive from our community,” she said. “Donors giving one item or a box full of items, merchants sponsoring donation collection boxes, seniors making bracelets

Mann said they had applied for a grant to help pay for the rental costs, but that fell through. Fortunately, a local business stepped up and helped pay for the rental. The goal of the Women
Helping Women campaign is simple — to give a gift of self-care to a woman, mother, sister or daughter going through a tough time in her life. “As beautiful as the holidays are for most of us, they can be incredibly sad for those that that find themselves in a less than ideal situation,” added Mann. “Sometimes all you need to keep going in your struggle is just a little boost, something to make you feel good, even if just for a day.”

More than 300 stockings were filled this holiday season through the 21st annual Stockings For Kids program. Toys and Tunes event benefits Deltassist’s Toy Depot
Last month’s Toys and Tunes event raised approximately $5,000 and a load of toys for Deltassist. “It went really well,” says organizer Angela Hurst.
The event saw six bands perform at the Tsawwassen Legion as well as a silent auction. The bands included Keelhaul, Bootleg, Southside Vibe, West of
Memphis, 17 West and All the Kings Men. Hurst expressed thanks to Ladner and Tsawwassen businesses that supported the silent auction as well as the Legion for hosting
the fundraiser. Deltassist runs an annual Toy Depot program to ensure children from low-income Delta families have gifts under the tree on Christmas morning.

The Fraser Valley Regional Library is once again running its Food for Fines campaign to help fill food bank shelves.
Library users reduce their fines by helping feed those in need
Fraser Valley Regional Library’s popular annual Food for Fines campaign is back as library patrons take advantage of the opportunity to reduce fines and help feed the community in the process. From Dec. 15 to Jan. 21, library users can “pay” their fines with food. They can bring in commercially packaged, unexpired, non-perishable food items to any FVRL branch and have their fines reduced. One food item equals
$2 in fines/fees, and up to $30 in fines/fees owed per library account can be cleared during the campaign. All items collected will be donated to the local area food bank. “FVRL’s top priorities include building meaningful community partnerships and reducing barriers for customers,” says Heather Scoular, director of customer experience. “Now in its fourth year, the campaign is a great opportunity for custom-
ers to reduce or eliminate their fines while supporting their local community food banks in the process. Last year our customers generously donated 13,375 food items, and in turn we cleared approximately $27,000 worth of fines.” Local pantries are especially in need of rice, flour, powdered baby formula, peanut butter and jams, pasta and sauces, canned fruit and vegetables, canned and dry soups, canned fish/meat and cereal.
Live it! At the core of it all is a strong and healthy body that allows you to LIVE BY CHOICE! Life is full of adventures and challenges and we are so proud of all of our clients for their accomplishments and dedication to their health this past year. Many of you have enjoyed fun active holidays, time with your grandchildren and athletic endeavors as a result of your time in the Studio. Thank you for trusting us with your physical well-being.

Christmas Greetings
Never stop believing in Santa
Optimist reader John Ratcliff had the Christmas spirit strike in October when he penned this poem. He says this outburst of sentimentality from a curmudgeonly sort who doesn’t even put up a Christmas tree suprised even himself, but the memories of being a child and feeling the love and hopes that
Christmas brought have, for some reason, bubbled up from his subconscious, causing him to look back fondly but somewhat regretfully on the past, knowing those moments won’t be relived. Ratcliff hopes someone might find some inspiration from reading his Christmas poem.

Olivia Malesku looks for an open teammate during Tuesday’s 54-46 home court loss to the Earl Marriott Mariners in Fraser Valley West Tier One girls basketball action. The Grade 11 guard is part of a promising group at the Ladner school.
YoungPacersdiveintodeepwater Delta senior girls playing in Fraser Valley top tier for first time in 6 years MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The Delta Pacers have ventured where no local senior girls team has gone in the last six years — to the deep waters of Fraser Valley basketball. The Ladner school is competing at the Tier One level for the first-time since 2011, hoping a promising group will benefit from a diet that will include some of the top teams in the province. The Pacers opened regular season play with a 94-40 loss to No. 10 ranked Semiahmoo. The West League also includes No. 7 Sullivan Heights. Delta did hang tough with Earl Marriott on Tuesday night, dropping a 54-46 decision. Victories are expected to be few and far between but the potential growth outweighs racking up wins at the Tier Two level, especially with a roster that features just three seniors and has players as young as Grade 8. “I think we decided Tier One because we are young and we are hoping to learn a lot this year knowing we would have some tough teams and tough games,” explained longtime DSS teacher and coach Kerrie Trotman. “These girls play with their hearts out regardless of the score. Tonight it was close and the other game against Semi we were down by a lot and they still played with heart until the
end.” Trotman has come up with a strong group of Grade 11s that enjoyed a solid season in junior a year ago, that even included being listed in the provincial rankings at one point. She is joined on the bench by former Pacer standout Ryan Cowley who guided the senior team in Tier Two a year ago. The day after the Pacers declared they would enter the top tier, Trotman learned Hanna Hansen required knee surgery. The key Grade 11 forward might have provided the difference in the loss to Marriott. They are hoping to have her back in mid-January. However, her loss has meant other players have had to step up. Trotman praised the play of Grade 10 Abbey Wigglesworth who has done a commendable job in the paint. Hansen and go-to guard Olivia Malesku are part of the most talented athletic group to come through the school in some time. The pair are also standout fastpitch players who helped the Delta Heat win the U16 Canadian championship last summer. “These girls are competitive and that’s what we saw last year,” continued Trotman. “Even the three Grade 12s that played tier two have already progressed greatly just by playing Tier One.” Where this team ends up over the next couple of seasons is uncertain.
As much as the girls will benefit from the Tier One experience, Trotman is well aware of the culture created by the top programs in the Fraser Valley. Those players are also involved at the club level and are playing year round. Semiahmoo’s roster features almost exclusively Grade 9 and 10 players after winning the Grade 8 provincial championship last spring in dominating fashion. Trotman knows her players will never be able to make that kind of commitment with their involvement in other sports. It’s the same scenario when the last promising group came through DSS and included her daughter Megan. However, she is convinced it’s the right route to be going. “You can play tier one and get beat but your competitive. In tier two, you might have the top team competitive with you but then there is such a drop off. You win those lopsided games and you are not really getting better,” she added. At the buzzer… The Pacers settled for third place in last week’s Delta Cup Tournament at Seaquam after dropping a 51-45 decision to eventual champion North Delta in the semi-finals. Delta coughed the ball up 18 times in the opening half and fell behind 16-2 before its comeback bid fell just short. The Pacers defeated South Delta 56-41 for third.

Stubbs off to Pinehurst after capturing qualifier
South Delta Midget A1 Storm battled Hollyburn on Tuesday night in PCAHA Flight Two action. The Storm head across the Fraser River next week for the 37th annual Richmond International Bantam Tournament.
An impressive win in California last month has earned Tsawwassen junior golfer Sierra Stubbs a spot in next summer’s USKids Teen World Golf Championship at the world-renowned Pinehurst Resort. The Grade 8 student at South Delta Secondary recorded a two-shot victory at the Monterey Challenge, holding off American Kathryn Robinson and Carla Alvarez Perez of Panama. An impressive opening round 2-over 74 gave Stubbs a four-shot lead and paved her way to victory. She was the lone Canadian in the field. That will send her back to Pinehurst for the second straight year. She was in North Carolina for the USKids World Junior Golf Tournament last summer where she placed 15th in the 12-Year-Old Division in a field of 121 international players. Stubbs credits her improved play and continued enjoyment of the game to being part of the SDSS Golf Academy, based out of the Beach Grove Golf Club.
Storm well-represented at Richmond International
South Delta Midget A1 Storm are among five local teams set to participate in the 37th annual Richmond International Bantam Midget Hockey Tournament starting on Boxing Day. The Storm capped a memorable run a year ago with a thrilling 4-3 overtime win over the Seafair Islanders to capture the 20-team Tier One Division. This season, the Storm will compete in Midget Tier 2 which features 16-teams. South Delta currently sits with a 2-7-3 record in Pacific Coast
Amateur’s Second Flight. The Storm will open round-robin play on Tuesday afternoon against Burnaby Minor A2. They will take on the Alaska Blue Devils Wednesday, Mission Arizona U16 Thursday and Vancouver Minor A1 Friday. South Delta Minor’s top two Bantam teams will also be in Richmond next week. The Bantam A1s are part of the 10-team Tier One Division with games against Coquitlam A1, Alaska All-Stars, Delta Hockey Academy’s Bantam Varsity team and Golden

His unwavering love for Alice was apparent even until his last days where he was holding her hand in his hospital bed, squeezing so hard she said “wow, you must still really like me” they both laughed, and she had to pull one of her hands away to wipe a tear of happiness.
Everyone loves, honors, and grieves in their own ways. We ask that you fondly keep your favorite memory of Gord and celebrate him in a way that brings a smile to your face; that is what he would have wanted.

Merrick Edward Groom 1926 - 2017 Sadly on December 8th, 2017 Merrick strolled out of our lives. He always could make anyone laugh. He always joked about the funny side of life. He was born in Norwich, England where he grew up. He became well educated and was very athletic enjoying soccer. He met his future wife Muriel on the dance floor. They both worked at Jarrold Printing Company. After flying glider airplanes in the R.A.F. during the Second World War Merrick and Muriel married in 1950 in Regina, Saskatchewan. They became Canadian citizens. They loved Canada and especially British Columbia where they settled to raise three children. Merrick worked for the Vancouver Sun newspaper and the Typographical Union. After retirement Merrick enjoyed curling, golf, lawn bowling and bridge with the Tsawwassen and Ladner clubs. He enjoyed travelling back to England and trips to the Bahamas, Bermuda and Hawaii. He will be missed by many. Merrick was predeceased by his wife Muriel in 2004. He is survived by his daughters Susan (Loyd), Melanie (Andy), his son David (Josee), grandchildren Dean, Shannon, Jonathan, Anne Marie, Amanda (Peter), great grandchildren Ryan and Wesley. A Private celebration was held by the Family.
It’s not where you go, it’s who you go with. Gord and Alice traveled the world, and were fortunate enough to do it with some amazing people. Not only did they touch down on most of the continents of the world, they were named honorary citizens in Barbados.
Gord will be deeply missed, but the lessons in kindness, generosity, and love that he so wisely gifted us with will live on in his family and friends forever. Thank you Gump, keep watching out for us.

Gord was immensely proud of the time that he spent in the Air Force as well as his long career with Air Canada, but more than anything his pride came from his family and the love of his wife Alice. They were blessed with two beautiful daughters that were born and raised in Winnipeg with the love and attention of their many aunts and uncles.
Although his health did not allow him to keep up with the long walks on the Tsawwassen dyke that he loved so much, his face always lit up when his kids, grand kids and great-grand kids entered a room. Even at the age of 93 he could often be found lying on the living room floor playing cars with his great-grand kids.

OLDHAVER, Anne E. June 20, 1934 - December 4, 2017 Anne passed away on Dec. 4, 2017 at the age of 83. She leaves behind daughters Jacqueline and Louise, and grandchildren Steven, Joanna, Nathan, and Matthew. Born in Winnipeg, Anne moved with her family to Osoyoos, BC, to Streetsville, ON, and then back to Kelowna where she met her husband Alvin Oldhaver. Anne co-owned a service station with Al in Tsawwassen and was involved in the Tsawwassen Business Association and in the Ladner Lions Club. Anne loved to help make her world a better place - working to get the Farm Training Center started in East Delta, being part of the May Day committee in Ladner, chairing the Tsawwassen Sun Festival and the Miss Tsawwassen Pageant. In 1985 the Delta Chamber of Commerce awarded Anne and Al “Good Citizen of the Year”. In retirement, Anne and Al enjoyed being snowbirds in Arizona. After Al passed away, Anne resumed her community service as Chair of the McKee Senior’s Society, tirelessly raising funds to build McKee Senior’s Recreation Center and enjoying her Thursday nights with “Jammers”. Anne’s optimism and cheerfulness will be missed by us all.

ACCOUNTING/ FINANCIAL FRASER, Dorothy
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother Dorothy after a courageous battle with cancer on December 10, 2017. Predeceased by her husband Len Fraser, parents Paul & Veronica Ross, sister Emma and niece Debbie, Dorothy is survived by her children Lee (Callum), Sandy (Dan), Doug (Gretchen), Wendy (Darren) and Vicki, her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many extended family and friends. Dorothy was born in Meadow Lake SK where she grew up on a farm with her loving family of 9. She moved to Prince George where she met the love of her life, our Dad Len. Growing up in PG then Richmond, our home was a place of laughter, mischief and unconditional love. All our friends wanted to hang out at our house due to Dorothy’s warm and loving nature. She always had time for sewing, knitting and especially her family. She eventually settled in Ladner many years ago and lived with, and was cared for by Vicki until her untimely death. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 in Ladner (details TBA). In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Delta Lifeskills Society or a charity of your choice. TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING
GENERAL EMPLOYMENT
Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment.
