A distinguished 36-year career in the fire service is coming to an end for Dan Copeland. With the second longest tenure as fire chief of the Delta Fire Department (11 years), Copeland will retire at the end of March, turning the reins over

to current deputy Chief Paul Scholfield. Copeland said he made the decision last July. “A lot of people much wiser than me have told me that you will know when it’s time,” Copeland said. “There was a number of factors that came into play, but I woke up one day and told my

wife that it’s time. It’s time to go, time for one of the current deputies to take the helm. We’ve done a great job with succession, so I was really comfortable with my decision.” Copeland said he has had a fulfilling and rewarding career in Delta supported by a great administration team, strong, unwavering support from staff

and council at the City of Delta and a committed, dedicated team of firefighters. “When I was interviewed for the job and one of the councillors of the day asked me what my vision for the job was, I said my vision was to take the department where others in the region will look to us as a leader. With the support of administration,

council, a mayor that has supported me 100 per cent, I believe I have achieved that. “I believe I have achieved that basically on the backs of the front line staff. The front line staff are the people who take my vision and implement it. They have just worked tremendously at doing that.” COPELAND: see Page 3

Pinup queen eyes Vegas Crowned Miss Ladner in 2017, Dandy D’Lish needs your vote to get to Sin City IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Dandy D’Lish is just a few clicks away from winning the top prize at the Miss Viva Las Vegas Pinup Pageant, but she needs some help from the folks here to get her there. The Ladner woman has always had a love for vintage fashion, but never considered pinup before seeing an ad in the Optimist in early 2015. “There on the page was the most beautiful blonde, Dixie Delight, happily sipping from a pineapple,” she recalled. “The ad, posted by Billie’s Barbershop, stated that they were looking for women to compete in the inaugural pinup competition at the Quilt Walk and Car Show. Well, after I Googled everything I could find on pinup pageants, I somehow worked up the courage to enter.” She has entered the local contest three times and after finishing third in 2016, she was crowned Miss Ladner at last year’s event. She also won the title of Tiki Queen at the Grease Gears and Grooves pinup pageant in Duncan last summer. “Once I had a taste for pinup and all the amazing things that come with it, like photoshoots, new friendships, charity functions, modeling opportunities, courage, determination and added confidence, I was hooked

Dandy D’Lish has fallen in love with the pinup world since entering the inaugural pageant at the Ladner Quilt Walk and Car Show three years ago. and wanted more,” she said. “I asked everyone I admired for advice and to share their experiences with me. A true pinup girl is supportive, uplifting, considerate and helpful. I learned that the Vegas competition is the largest of its kind and I wanted to experience it all. After getting a couple more local pageants under my belt I set my sights on Vegas.” Every fall, women are

invited to submit an online application to the Viva Las Vegas Pinup Contest, open to those from every country and age group. There were more than 160 applications this year. The judges choose their top six and then decide who will be going forward to the online voting round. There are approximately 80 women in this round, hoping for the final six spots. To help get Dandy D’Lish over the top, go to

www.vivalasvegas.net/ pin-up-contest to vote. She stresses you must vote from a computer, as phones don’t work. The finalists advance to the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender Car Show in April. “I plan to continue to be involved in classic car shows, pageants, charity events and vintage fashion shows. I’m also hoping to start offering classes locally here with special guest

instructors and speakers, who have much more experience and have truly been trailblazers in this field,” she said. “Standing on stage is the scariest and most empowering thing I’ve ever done for myself and I want to share that experience with others.” You can find out more about the contest on her Facebook page at: https:// www.facebook.com/dandydlish/.

Copeland most proud of medical responder program

CONTINUED from Page 1 Copeland said there have been many achievements during his 11 years as chief, including constant training and equipment upgrades, a fire hall study, excellent collective bargaining, and a committed charitable society that has given back thousands of dollars to the community. What he is most proud of is the department’s commitment to the emergency medical responder program. “It was a monumental task for us to do that, but through their desire and hard work we have gotten to where we are today.

Other departments in the region are using us as the test model for this training. It’s nice to be recognized as a leader in this.” He said he will miss the excitement and challenges of the job, the interaction with city hall and the camaraderie of his fellow firefighters, but he won’t miss the calls with fatalities or time away from family and friends. “You have to have a supportive spouse and my wife has been there 100 per cent, my kids have always been behind me, so it’s time for my focus to be about them,” he said. “The timing is perfect. We have

eight grandchildren, a healthy family and I want to do things while I’m still healthy and able to do them.” Scholfield has been with Delta for 26 years, the last eight as deputy chief. “I’ve loved every minute of it and I’m excited for the new challenge,” Scholfield said. “Dan’s mandate when he was hired was to make this the best department in the province and he has done that. We excel in so many things that it’s going to be a challenge to keep doing that. It’s exciting, but I think there are huge challenges coming on the horizon for Delta.

The growth of Delta is going to be a challenge for us, whether it is the high-rise buildings in North Delta, the industrial growth, the expansion of the port, a contract expansion with the TFN and a new fire hall and training centre, just to name a few things.” Scholfield said he does have goals and a vision he wants to implement, but didn’t want to get into too many specifics just yet. “One of the things I can say is that we have done such a great job on the response side over the years, so now I think we need to concentrate on

fire prevention, get out to the community more and provide more public education. If we can stop a fire from happening before it happens we have actually done a better job than showing up and putting it out,” he said. “We have become a go-to department for training and knowledge. We have empowered our people. We listen to them. They are a group that runs with things, so we are very fortunate here to have such a strong group. I’m very excited about the opportunity to lead such a talented and dedicated team.”

Flu season in full swing IAN JACQUES

The flu season has arrived in a big way to the Fraser Health region. So much so, in fact, the health authority is reminding people that many options are available for people seeking treatment. “In general, what we are seeing in Fraser Health in the past two weeks is that influenza is really starting to circulate, so the season is on,” said medical health officer Dr. Martin Lavoie. Since Dec. 28, Fraser Health has seen five confirmed and four suspected influenza outbreaks in residential care facilities across the region. While none of the facilities are in South Delta, the rise in influenza cases across the board is starting to put pressure on Delta Hospital, said Lavoie. “A lot of people are

If your family doctor is not available, he suggests checking medimap.ca for participating walk-in clinics, wait times and opening hours. Provincial government working on new model to fund education SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Delta school district could end up on the losing end of the provincial government’s new funding allocation formula. That was the big concern conveyed by the Delta board of education this week as it discussed the province’s review that’s supposed to ensure stable and predictable funding, something trustees fear could mean extra money distributed to some districts at the expense of others. “I’m concerned they may end up redistributing the pot, taking from one group to give to another. That wouldn’t be fair. A district’s gain shouldn’t be because another has lost funding,” said trustee Val Windsor. “One example we can point to in Delta is our bussing program and the difficult decisions we had to make over the loss of that funding.” The province and the B.C. School Trustees Association are currently working together to develop a set of shared principles for the future funding model. The province will consider recommended options this fall with implementation planned for March 2019. The Delta board agreed to ask the province to

Delta board of education chair Laura Dixon, pictured with superintendent Doug Sheppard, says they’re just beginning the consultation process with local education partners on the province’s plan for a new funding formula. ensure the wording in the guiding principles has an emphasis on investing in the public education system, while a motion by the trustees organization asks the province that, whatever funding formula is derived, it will not result in districts having a net loss from their current allocations. Trustee Bruce Reid noted Delta has been very responsible with its funding and should be at least covered for increased costs, from utilities to pro-

viding support for students with special needs. Trustee Rhiannon Bennett agreed, saying, “It’s not right to take from one classroom to provide negotiated increases for another.” Trustee Fabian Milat warned Delta could find itself penalized for being resourceful and generating its own additional revenues, including attracting international students. Trustee Nick Kanakos also said the new funding formula shouldn’t create a

Pet

system of winners and losers. Instead, there should be a bigger pot, he said. Trustee Dale Saip said districts need to be careful about demanding a new funding formula that could backfire. “Don’t kick a sleeping dog on the porch,” he warned. The statement of principles should state that funding public education is a priority and not be based on the province’s fiscal situation, said board chairperson Laura Dixon.

Week Broli

Broli is a one year old male pitbull lab mix around 65lbs. This sweet boy came to us from our sister rescue in California, Eastwood Ranch Foundation, after they saved him from a hoarding situation. Broli has been living with a family of four the last few months and been doing very well. They say he is 100% house broken and crate trained, but they are working on a couple other things... While Broli is great with new people, and kids, he can sometimes get protective of his family and home. This has never gone past a bark or growl, but too much commotion and people coming in and out of a home seems to stress him. He is very affected by the energy in a home, and does great when someone is giving a calm, assertive energy to where he feels he does not need to step in to help. He does get excited, and his current fosters recommend kids six and up for “durability” ;) In the past, Broli has been great with big and small dogs. Being from a hoarding situation he’s used to a lot of other animals, but recently has been a bit more reactive out of the house. We did a training session with him and a big and small dog and he did fantastic! Again, he is so effected by energy and what vibes you are sending him. He has a high prey drive with small wild animals, so we think cats would be a no go. As with all our dogs, he is neutered and up to date on all shots and vaccines, plus microchipped! If you think Broli would be a good match for you and your family, please find our foster information and applications on our website at p pbandchi.com

Public to be given say on zoning review SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A comprehensive new set of rules on what’s allowed in Delta is coming. Delta council recently gave preliminary approval to a zoning bylaw that hadn’t had a comprehensive update since the late 1970s. Finding many of the regulations were outdated and less integrated, city staff began a review process in May 2014, starting with a zoning advisory group that included architects, house designers, surveyors, builders, developers and realtors. After a series of workshops, public information meetings and a questionnaire for residents, a new document has been prepared addressing everything from housing and parking

to cannabis sales. Planning director Marcy Sangret noted the streamlined regulations, which are much easier for people to navigate and understand, won’t downzone anyone’s property. Specific changes range from revised parking ratios to making larger development indoor or outdoor amenity space a standard requirement. Other changes include permitting more childcare facilities in different zones and new requirements for electric vehicle charging stations. Other changes include making Ladner’s minimum lot width of 12 metres for new houses apply to all Delta. When it comes to secondary suites, Sangret explained, “We’ve taken a number of our policies and now imbedded them

in our bylaw and one of the main ones we use on a daily basis is our secondary suite parking policy, which we’ve had in place since February of last year.” Secondary suite parking is not permitted on front yards, while a minimum of two enclosed spaces for a principal resident is required for a home with a suite so parking is not spilled onto driveways and the tenants subsequently forced to park on the street. A report to council notes public participation during the process varied significantly between Delta’s communities with only 19 residents attending the first public meeting in South Delta while 94 attended the second meeting in North Delta. Similarly, only 48 questionnaires were filled out

by South Delta residents as compared to 1,559 by North Deltans. North Delta also happens to be somewhat of a hotbed of housing concerns, including another high-rise proposed for the Scott Road corridor as well as residents on Paterson Road upset about a pair of so-called “monster houses” planned for their street. Most of the responses in North Delta objected to a smaller house size cap, so the current limit will stay in place. They also voiced objection to a new higher minimum lot width for a house with a secondary suite but that proposal is moving forward. Sangret noted development applications already submitted will be grandfathered. A public hearing will be held Jan. 30.

Next Saturday’s Shred-A-Thon will help people combat identity theft by shredding sensitive documents.

Delta Gymnastics holding fifth annual Shred-A-Thon

Identity theft has quickly become one of the fastest growing crimes in North America so the Delta Gymnastics Society is offering the community the opportunity to safely dispose of confidential and sensitive information. The society’s fifth annual Shred-A-Thon will be held in Ladner on Saturday, Jan. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “We are very excited to help support Delta Gymnastics in this important community service in support of hard working gymnastics athletes and their supportive families,” said the ShredWise team

in unison, a company based in White Rock. Businesses and individuals are welcome to bring their bags and boxes of documents to the Ladner Save-on-Foods parking lot where a shredding truck will be stationed. Donations will be accepted by members of Delta Gymnastics who will assist with removal of the boxes. Shredding of transaction records, credit applications, insurance forms, cheques, financial statements, mortgage or other home information, payroll and tax returns is highly recommended. “The popularity of this

event has grown so much over the years and each new year we receive calls from the community asking about dates,” said Ana Arciniega, executive director of Delta Gymnastics. “We chose this time of year because the timing couldn’t be better as we prepare for tax season by cleaning up office drawers, storage rooms and files by bringing them to us for safe disposal.” Donations received at the shredding event will directly benefit athletes who want the opportunity to represent their club in regional and national competitions.

he Fraser Institute is once again having fun with numbers with its latest study that looks at the population densities of major cities in North America and beyond. The conclusion of Room To Grow: Comparing Urban Density in Canada and Abroad is that Canadian cities could comfortably add more people, although the underlying theme, that doing so could help the affordability crisis, is completely absent from the study itself. The eight-paragraph press release that accompanied the email launch of the study this week makes two mentions of housing affordability, or lack thereof, but the study prefers to look at how increased density doesn’t negatively impact quality of life. The fun with numbers starts with this cherry-picked assertion: “Even Vancouver — Canada’s densest major city with 5,493 people per square kilometre — ranks 13th out of 30, and is significantly less dense than San Francisco (7,171 people per square kilometre), a comparable West Coast city.” That’s true, but what the study also found is that Vancouver is considerably denser than the comparable West Coast cities of Seattle and Portland, about three times denser than Oregon’s largest city. Vancouver is also denser than Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and a host of other large U.S. cities. It’s more than three times as dense as Dallas and four times as dense as Houston. In fact, of the 19 North American cities on the list, only two — New York and the aforementioned San Francisco — are actually denser than Vancouver. And come to think of it, aren’t those two of the most unaffordable cities on the planet? I can buy the study’s argument that adding density doesn’t necessarily harm a city’s quality of life given that location, climate, economic opportunities, amenities and a host of other factors contribute to livability. Is the quality of life less in Vancouver than in Toronto simply because it’s denser? Hardly. I’m having a harder time, however, buying the idea that increased density would help with affordability, given the study fails to tackle that crucial issue. Adding more people might not harm a city, but if it doesn’t help its inhabitants (make it more affordable), then who benefits, other than the developers building all that extra housing?

Sugary drinks tax could make huge difference for children

H

ere we are almost halfway into the first month of the new year and things seem to be moving along quickly already. I enjoy these first few new weeks as they afford an opportunity to take stock and reflect on goals for the next 12 months. I’m not a huge resolution guy, but I do consider certain aspects of life that could use some improving at this time of year. OK, first on the list is a nutritional health issue for me. During the past couple of months I have enjoyed too much cheese. My friend Steve calls the seasonal binge the “cheeses of Nazareth.” Every year I convince myself that I can eat every cheese known to man because it is the holidays and I know that January will come eventually and I can turn the binge off until next year. Another big one for me this year will be to avoid pop, diet pop and sports drinks. I have tried to gradually wean myself off these for a few years now and appreciate some of the work that has gone on by organizations and governments to alert the public as to the health issues that come along with the consumption of sugary drinks. I spend my days working with kids and teaching them about food and nutritional health and I now feel compelled to bring a discussion about beverages into

Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER

the mix. The Jamie Oliver Foundation has made inroads in promoting the idea of taxing sugary drinks in the hopes of stemming the increasingly alarming rate of global childhood obesity. Much of that work has been initiated in the United Kingdom and some concrete results are being realized. The basic concept is that tax revenues gained from the penalty on sugary drinks would go back into the health system and into the education system to promote healthy eating and sports. In a letter to Canadians via the Globe and Mail this past fall, Oliver notes, “The cost of obesity and diet-related disease is a true cost in tax to every Canadian — obesity costs Canada between $4.6-billion to $7.1-billion annually in health costs and lost productivity. And that’s not good in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.”

The Liberal government has gone down the road on this front and will be introducing new labelling for sugar-laden beverages. The possibility of a tax is on the horizon here as well. In terms of revenues generated, Oliver cites, “The University of Waterloo says a Canadian sugary drinks tax would raise a massive $43.6-billion over 25 years. Imagine what a huge difference that could make for Canadian kids if spent well.” If you thought drinking diet pop was the answer to enjoying flavourful bubbles, like I have over the past couple of years, you may want to reconsider your reasoning. Recent observational studies have shown a correlation between an increase in risk of stroke and a host of other medical problems with diet drinks as well. It would seem that the artificial sugars confuse the brain, which requires glucose for fuel, and subsequently puts more pressure on kidney and liver function. Opponents to the idea of taxes wonder where the line should be drawn. Tax fruit juice? Wine? Beer? I think that we should hone in on the kids first. Tax the pop and drink more water. Delta Hospital Foundation broadens mandate

Editor: We’d like to introduce our new name — Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation (formerly Delta Hospital Foundation) — to community members. Since 1988, Delta Hospital Foundation has been the public face and philanthropic arm of Delta Hospital, raising the financial resources necessary to provide quality and innovative healthcare services, purchase priority medical equipment, fund capital campaign projects and building improvements,

and support ongoing education of medical staff. Thanks to our generous donors, we have had a history of great success in this community. To date, we have raised over $43 million. In 2012, a High Level Master Concept Plan was created for Delta Hospital in partnership with Fraser Health. This plan details a 20-year vision of expansion and improvement for our hospital. Recently, we completed the first phase of this plan by raising our committed $7.5 million for the new Peter C. and

Elizabeth Toigo Diagnostic Services building. Phase 2 of this master plan, currently in the planning and research stage, is to replace Mountain View Manor, our residential care facility. As this facility will likely be a separate building located on the Delta Hospital campus, we needed to expand our charitable purposes in order to raise funds for key healthcare projects outside of the four walls of Delta Hospital. As part of the renaming process, we met with

our community to identify how best to move forward with the overall site plan for Delta Hospital. Over many months we had numerous conversations, held focus groups, facilitated surveys and interviews with representatives of all our stakeholder groups, including service organizations, Delta citizens within different gender and age categories, our donors, elected officials, hospital staff and community leaders. Through this community engagement project, we learned there is

strong support in favour of us making the changes necessary so that we can engage in community fundraising efforts to replace Mountain View Manor. While our immediate purpose for this change is singular, to allow us to raise funds for a new residential facility, it also gives us future opportunity to support positive healthcare initiatives that may be outside the four walls of Delta Hospital but still within the community of Delta. However, we remain committed to the promise we made 30 years ago: that

we will always take care of Delta Hospital. We are excited about the future of the hospital and what this will bring to our community. We believe this expansion of our charitable mandate will be a positive change for evolving times that can help strengthen and transform healthcare for Delta. Farmland review most welcomed Public has legal right to access MAiD

Editor: Re: NDP appoints Huntington, Jan. 10 Hearty applause for the provincial NDP and Greens in approving a long-overdue review of the Agricultural Land Commission and the Agricultural Land Reserve. The review is at its very early stages, and already Delta South MLA Ian

Paton, the Liberal’s coagriculture critic, appears to be creating noise and resistance to potential changes. Isn’t this the same MLA and Delta councillor who voted in favour of allowing 950 housing units be built on valuable Southlands agricultural land? How credible can his premature ALC/ALR review com-

ments be? One would hope our Delta South MLA would keep a more open mind and advocacy position to potential discussions and changes when he represents a community that has seen our farmland over the last years so under attack from so many ventures. B. Yaworski

Editor: I am witting in response to the concept of Fraser Health “forcing MAID” on the Delta Hospice Society. My dad died in hospice, so I spent a lot of time there over three months. Personally, it never

occurred to me to judge what was happening next door to my dad, only to know, there too was a family struggling with the complexity of loss. The right to privacy, dignity and acceptance are well ingrained over 40 years of nursing, I guess.

If Delta Hospice wishes to continue denying space to people who chose this legal medical process, then the hospice needs to step away from all public funding. My tax dollars support the legal right to MAiD. Deb Connell

Why is the story of Christmas and Epiphany so important? In a tumultuous world that moves from one attempted solution to another at seemingly lightning speed, the story of Christmas and the full story of the scripture recorded in the bible serves as consistent foundational reminder. As the chorus of the old Hymn asserts, “We have an anchor that keeps the soul, steadfast and sure while the billows role, fastened to the rock which cannot move, grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love.” People of faith in every nation and every corner of our world retell the story every year so that we will

never forget that through the incarnation God chose to dwell among us and it is in Jesus that the light of the world has broken into the darkness bringing hope, peace, joy and love. This is not just some

spiritualized dream. It is the lived reality of communities of faith throughout the world. Communities of faith that live out care and compassion on a daily basis. Communities of faith that encourage the downtrodden with practical support, who welcome the orphan and the stranger. Communities of faith that stand against injustice of all forms. Communities of faith that call out politically expedient decisions that are repeatedly born on the backs of the poor and dispossessed. Why is the story of Christmas and Epiphany so important? Because it reminds us that there is a different vision for our world.

avid Robertson is bringing a two-act multimedia comedy production to Ladner’s Genesis Theatre later this month. Remote Control, billed as a spoof on TV broadcasting, will feature live actors onstage as well as another 13 actors who appear in DVD segments on large screens, Robertson explains. The premise of the play pits “six resolute and technically savvy souls” at Peppercorn Community Television up against Lancaster Broadcasting, a large New York company that is expanding its empire into Canada. The Peppercorn crew learns Lancaster has designs on shutting down its recently acquired local community television stations and “vow to hoax, spoof and lambaste their new head office in whatever way they can.” That involves creating fake news stories, including one about a flying bathtub race and another involving a lost cosmo-

The Peppercorn team also eventually add an artificial intelligence called Darwin into the mix. “After a while you begin to wonder, well, who’s spoofing who about what,” says Robertson, a North

Delta resident, “and where is this going?” The entire play is set in the interior of the Peppercorn Community Television station, he notes. Robertson says the idea for the story came about

while producing a real community television production for Delta Cable in the 1990s. Remote Control runs from Jan. 24 to Feb. 4 at Genesis Theatre, 500545th Ave., Ladner. Regular ticket prices are $29, $39

Sidekick brings Love Letters to arts centre

The Sidekick Players Club opens a three-week run of Love Letters by A.R. Gurney at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre next week. The Fighting Days by Wendy Lill was originally scheduled for this time, but due to production constraints, Sidekick has had to postpone this play until next season. Love Letters, directed by Carroll Lefebvre and starring Marcia Strang and Jeff Pannell, is the story of Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position. They are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Romantically attached, they continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years. While Andy is off at war Melissa marries, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries, becomes a successful attorney, gets involved in politics and, eventually, is elected to

Upcoming play to mark Fehr’s directorial debut

The Sidekick Players Club will be auditioning its third production of the season, Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun by Canada’s most prolific playwright, Norm Foster, next weekend. The play will mark the directorial debut for Bernice Fehr, who has appeared in many Sidekick productions and has worked as an assistant director and stage manager on several plays. Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun is the touching story of Robert, his mother Claire and his new friend, Holly. Robert is a 35-yearold man with the mental capacity of a seven-yearold, who meets a pregnant young woman, Holly, in crisis, and the two form a friendship that will change their lives forever. Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun is a story about people finding the nerve to take responsibility and about persevering against the odds. It will run from April 18 to 28 at the Tsawwassen

Full Monty Mondays III at Gallery 1710

“I can’t draw.” The refrain is often heard at the South Delta Artists Guild’s Gallery 1710, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Since the stick figure doesn’t make the cut for a good artist, many take a life drawing class. There are only a few shapes used when sketching figures — the sphere (head), the tube (arms, legs, necks, fingers) and

the triangle (bottom torso). Participants learn to use all these shapes by drawing figures and keep at it until that left brain is doing all the work and the drawings take on the character of the model. Monday morning at the gallery studio has a devoted following sharpening their pencils, and getting hard charcoal sticks or soft conte crayons at the ready. Some use water-

color paints, some prefer ink. The model strikes a pose — quickly changing it so the artist warms up and hasn’t time to find that nose, just the body shape, with little detail. Longer poses follow. Sitting still for a long time is a challenge for the model, and allows the artist to draw in details, shading, shaping and drapes of clothing. The hair takes on a sheen, the leg appears

round. The model has to appear to be a threedimensional, fully-formed figure when the drawing is finished. The guild has many artists who participate in the life drawing sessions. Their third show — Full Monty Mondays III — opened yesterday and continues until Sunday, Jan. 21. Gallery 1710 is open between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., Thursday to Sunday.

A reception is scheduled for tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m. As well, master sketcher Adrienne Moore will lead a hands-on drawing demo tomorrow from 1 to 4 p.m. in the gallery. Using a model and drawing with charcoal sticks and India ink, participants will learn how to produce a great drawing and how to make clothing drape around a figure.

Logan Vaitkus and his Ladner Goju-Ryu Karate instructor Ken Hui. The Tsawwassen teen recently earned his second degree black belt.

It’s a special bond between a student and his mentor that has helped Logan Vaitkus soar up the Goju-Ryu Karate ranks. The 15-year-old from Tsawwassen recently was awarded his second dan (degree) black belt. Typically, Vaitkus should have waited another six months for his 16th birthday when he would then be considered adult age to be tested. That’s when Ken Hui stepped in. The 62-year-old instructor oversees twice weekly sessions at the Ladner Fishermen’s Hall. Goju-Ryu is a traditional Okinawan style of karate that means “hard-soft” which reflects the closed and open hand tech-

niques, along with circular movements. It’s the same discipline that was taught to Ralph Macchio in the renowned 1984 movie Karate Kid. When Hui realized one of his top students was more than ready, he went beyond the normal procedure to make it happen by writing to Japanese Goju Ryu council in Okinawa for special permission. “I didn’t want him to waste another year of waiting because everyone (usually) has to transfer to adult first,” said Hui. “I wrote to my teacher and explained he is one of the best students I have had for many years and could they please let him go for his second dan test. “They told me under my strong recommendation he was approved.”

Vaitkus was put through the extensive test that included forms and sparring. He initially passed then received final approval when video footage of the testing was endorsed by the council in Japan to become the youngest second dan. “I worked very hard. Going through all the forms every day, making sure I knew them,” explained Vaitkus. “He won’t let you test unless he knows you are ready. I received a lot of help from him and back at home too where my dad pushed me to keep working.” Vaitkus received his first dan black belt when he was 10. It’s going to take more years of training before he is ready for his third dan. Hui is a sixth dan but didn’t earn his second until he was 18.

“For some it could take eight or nine years to be ready,” explained Hui. “It really depends on the individual.” Vaitkus is quick to credit Hui for his rapid progression. His teaching style offers little in the way of “sugar coating” when students need to be better. He began working with him when he was just five and has thrived in that environment. Karate has also complimented many other parts of his life. “He is the best,” smiled Vaitkus of his instructor. “Karate has helped with my confidence. I used to be really skinny and it was something I never liked so it has helped me there too. “It even helps with my schooling and other sports. It’s something I think everyone should have.”

Sports Sponge Ball Madness

Hawthorne Park welcomed 16 teams last weekend for the 16th annual Ladner Spongeball Madness slopitch tourney. The event featured round-robin action on Saturday and the playoffs on Sunday. Between the games, Ladner’s Landing hosted a buffet brunch for all players. The 16-team field featured entries from Kamloops, Squamish, Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Surrey. (Right) The longtime local favourites were the Ladner Dump Trucks.

Ice Hawks cool off Wolf Pack in a big way Any thoughts of the North Vancouver Wolf Pack potentially reeling in the Delta Ice Hawks were all but put to rest on Tuesday night. Not only did the Wolf Pack come to Ladner riding a seven-game win streak, they handed the Ice Hawks a rare defeat at last Saturday’s Pacific Junior Hockey League Winter Classic in Richmond, a 2-1 triumph in double overtime. The result moved North Vancouver within 13 points as the teams head into the final month of the regular season. The rematch, however, was a far different story. Delta erupted for five goals in the second period alone and cruised to a 10-2 victory to improve to 31-2-0-2 on the season. Goals from Kyle Uy and Jesse Nelson gave the hosts a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. The Hawks then proceeded to break the game wide open, scoring three times in less than four minutes to make it 5-0.

Jordan Deyrmenjian (centre) celebrates his second goal of the night in the Delta Ice Hawks 10-2 win over North Vancouver on Tuesday in Ladner.

Rookie blueliner Aiden Hansen-Bukata began the outburst just 33 seconds into the frame. Goals followed from Blake Bonnar and Daniel Rubin. The Wolf Pack finally got on the board but Delta was not done, opening up a 7-1 advantage on tallies from Jordan Deyrmenjian and Isiah Hendricks. The rout was completed with further damage in the third from Jordan Bogress, along with Uy and Deyrmenjian adding their second goals of the night. Bogress finished with a four point night. Nelson and Uy each had three. Jordan Naylor picked up the win in net. The Hawks travel to Grandview on Sunday night and return home Tuesday to take on the Langley Trappers at 7:35 p.m. It will be a busy three days for Gabriel LeBlanc, Gary Dhaliwal, Daniel Rubin, Deyrmenjian and Naylor. They have all been chosen to play in Monday’s PJHL All-Star Game in Langley.

@%?>,=@,M> H #CC' %A=!BO%M> ,=*>!CM

We are saddened to announce the passing of George Wigglesworth on January 5th, 2018. George passed away peacefully at home with his wife Audrey and sons at his side. George was born April 30, 1947, raised in Ladner, lived in East Delta for five years and then in Cloverdale for 30 years. George was a man of many trades, and was kind, generous and always ready to lend a helping hand. He had endless energy for his sons and walking his dogs. George retired and moved to Hope in 2014 where he spent many hours walking or hiking with his friends, ending up sitting by the water with a cold beer. Even though he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September of 2017, George was thankful for his home and family as well as all the visits and phone calls he received.

TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the: Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711 Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email: inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.
