Hollinger’s generosity helps police, fire and school district SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Public institutions in Delta are continuing to benefit from the estate of Al Hollinger. The Delta Foundation announced last week that the Delta fire and police departments as well as the Delta
School District are equally sharing a $300,000 gift from Hollinger’s estate. According to the foundation, the police and fire departments will use the funds for training, while the school district will use its share to establish a scholarship. A long-time Delta resident
who passed away three years ago at the age of 82, Hollinger was a former police officer and an explosives and bomb disposal expert. He served for many years with B.C. Corrections, including as a guard at the infamous B.C. Penitentiary. HOLLINGER: see Page 3

North Delta crowd rises up Full house at public hearing as proposed zoning changes get a rough ride SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta council’s policies are discriminatory against North Delta. That was the complaint several residents raised about proposed zoning bylaw changes at a public hearing Tuesday night. An overflow crowd showed up at city hall with most vehemently opposed to proposed regulations they argue will adversely limit what they can do with their properties and impact property values, while failing to address housing affordability. Saying there’s a disconnect between council and the North Delta community, several suggested it’s discriminatory South Delta currently doesn’t have the same rules when it comes to caps on house sizes. “Why aren’t you doing this in Ladner and why aren’t you doing this in Tsawwassen? It’s absolutely wrong,” said one resident. One homeowner claimed North Deltans are “being treated like secondclass citizens.” To address street parking complaints, proposed regulations include secondary suites only being

City hall wasn’t able to accommodate any more people after reaching capacity at a public hearing Tuesday where most of the speakers were strongly opposed to a zoning overhaul. permitted on lots at least 15 metres (49 feet) in width. It’s a policy that’s been in place for a couple of years but not formally written into the bylaw yet. Planning director Marcy Sangret said of all singledetached properties in Delta, 91 per cent are 15 metres or wider and, if all regulations are met, could potentially accommodate a secondary suite. Also in the new bylaw, secondary suite parking
would not be permitted within a front yard but only the side or back, and a one-metre (three foot) setback from a neighbour’s lot line would be required for parking spaces. Another contentious proposal includes the minimum lot width for the smallest house moving up from 11 metres (36 feet) to 12 metres (39 feet), which many complained will potentially reduce the number of subdivisions.
Sangret acknowledged the house cap for the same size lot is different in North Delta compared to South Delta, also noting North Delta new home development goes through a design review process. She explained the cap is not new but a provision that’s been in place for years in the current bylaw. She noted when it was introduced, smaller homes on large lots in North Delta were mak-
ing way for much larger houses, drawing concern from neighbourhoods at the time. Until the cap was imposed, property owners could build up to a certain percentage of lot sizes, which meant much bigger houses on those large lots. The proposed changes, which prompted petitions and hundreds of letters, drew some raised voices Tuesday. The sky was falling in North Delta due to big houses, now it’s falling because of small ones, complained one resident. “Increasing the lot width will close the door for hundreds of families. This just isn’t right,” said another resident. “People also won’t have an affordable place to live in Delta and people won’t be able to buy a house because they can’t have a secondary suite to help pay the mortgage.” Several North Delta residents, however, spoke in favour of the proposed regulations, saying street parking has already become a problem and trade-offs are required in order to have livability. Council has decided to hold a special meeting next Monday at 7 p.m. to discuss where to go with the bylaw.
Hollinger made donations to many Delta organizations
CONTINUED from Page 1 Hollinger was an avid collector of military memorabilia, motorcycles and unique bicycles, and was at his happiest riding the countryside with his longtime partner, Joan. “Al’s wish for his estate was to help Delta’s police,
fire and school services in an ongoing way,” said Rev. Jim Short, executor of the estate. “He also made generous donations to Delta Hospital, OWL and our United Church. I think the Delta Foundation, as did Al, is an excellent way for people to give back to
the community, to make it stronger, in providing a trusted system to ensure your wishes are administered as a legacy at one time or on an ongoing basis.” A former resident of Delta Hospital’s Mountain View Manor, Hollinger
donated more than $400,000 to the hospital. Chair Nöel Philippot said the Delta Foundation is grateful to Hollinger for his generosity and forward thinking. “Over the years many people like Al have made similar community-build-
ing gifts, in return for tax receipts, to see them put to work right away in keeping with their wishes, or after they’re gone. The gifts have been cash, for specific causes or unspecified to help the many non-profit organizations which apply for funding.”

Pet Week of the
Slinky Dog
This eight month old, twenty two pound male mixed breed pup came to us from a shelter in Korea. He was totally terrified when he first arrived in Canada, and then ran away from his first foster home for three days before he was found again, but he has made so much progress in the last couple months! He is named Slinky Dog from Toy Story as he has a very similar temperament and body! He is still shy, but more and more Slinky is learning that life is not as scary as he thought. It can take a bit of time for him to warm up to new people but as soon as he does, Slinky is the happiest boy ever, demonstrating this by wagging his tail and wanting pets, cuddles and to play. Due to the fact that he has nipped when cornered, we do not recommend a home with small children at this time. Ideally a quiet, calm and patient home is what this sweetheart needs. Slinky Dog LOVES his canine buddies! He loves to play with them and learns so much from them. Because of this, we are only considering homes with a resident dog as he needs a dog brother or sister to follow their lead and cuddle up with. Slinky is okay with cats but he does like to chase them playfully. He thinks everyone should be his friend. Totally house broken and crate trained, Slinky enjoys being with his foster family and his three foster siblings. If he becomes unsure, he will be go into his crate. Now that his surroundings are familiar, Slinky has improved so much on leash. He will still need to be double leashed outside as safety precaution until he is familiar with his new home and his new people. As with all our dogs, he is neutered and up to date on all shots and vaccines and microchipped. If you think Slinky Dog is a good match for you, you can find our foster information and applications on our website at pbandchi.com

Plans in works to form anti-racism group
Are you interested in becoming part of a network combating racism? A public meeting will be held next week at Deltassist to gauge interest from the community to form a Delta committee that would be part of the BC Anti-racism Network. Dozens of groups throughout the province have joined the network, and received provincial funding, working to address racism through the B.C. Organizing Against Racism and Hate (OARH) pro-
gram. The BC Anti-racism Network was established in 2001 to support a coordinated community approach to counter racism and hate activity. It’s comprised of leaders in anti-racism and multiculturalism work around the province. Its goals include communities having an increased knowledge and understanding of what comprises racism and hate and establishing a supportive and collaborative response to hate crimes.
There are 32 communities listed as OARH members in B.C., including Vancouver, Richmond, Surrey and Burnaby. Deltassist executive director Julie Chadwick said her organization is facilitating the community meeting for the network, which originally approached the City of Delta. The session will be held Wednesday, Feb. 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Deltassist’s North Delta office, 9097 Scott Rd.

Delta council has approved the design for road improvements along Tsawwassen’s 8A Avenue and will now put the project out to tender. The upgrades have been on the radar for a number of years, according to engineering director Steven Lan. “About five or six years ago we put out some feelers and the neighbourhood was not generally in favour,” stated Lan in his report to council at the Jan. 22 meeting. “This past year staff brought the project forward and met with the neighbourhood and received a considerable amount of feedback through two consultation meetings.” Lan said following the most recent consultation on Jan. 11, several revisions have been made to the original plan to address concerns. The project will see a sidewalk along the north side from English Bluff Road to 52nd Street; a sidewalk along the south
amenities are in the area. “Along this entire corridor we have a number of facilities that families will want to access,” Lan said. “We are trying to encourage families to walk and/ or cycle if that is an option, so that is the rationale behind the bike lanes.” The project will be constructed in two phases: the first phase, English Bluff to 52nd Street, is to start this spring/summer and the second phase, from 52nd Street to 56th Street, is to start in the spring/summer of 2019.

“This is a waste of taxpayer money. Yes, our street needs some road repairs, but that’s it.” Jeanette Morrison, who wrote to the City of Delta and the Optimist, said pocket parking, along with two bike lanes, is a sad way to spend taxpayers’ money. “Please drop the bike

orgive me because I’m having a difficult time trying to follow the logic. The federal Liberal government announced last week it’s shelving a cost-cutting program introduced by the former Conservative government that began discontinuing home mail delivery in favour of community mailboxes. It was our own Carla Qualtrough, minister of public services and procurement, who announced that more than four million addresses across the country would be spared, although the news wasn’t so rosy for the 800,000 or so addresses that have already transitioned to community mailboxes because they won’t be getting home delivery restored. I can see the validity of both approaches: the Conservatives believed cost reductions were necessary to ensure Canada Post remained selfsustaining while the Liberals are of the mind that home delivery is too important to lose, savings be damned. Both are entirely defensible positions, but what I have a harder time wrapping my head around is this hybrid system we’ve been left with following last week’s decision. Abandoning the program shows the Liberals value home delivery, even if it means leaving significant money on the table, yet it’s these same Liberals that are loath to give up savings already realized in order to restore delivery to those who have recently lost it. It is, to be polite, an inconsistent approach. We all pay taxes and we all pay the same amount to mail a letter, yet we’re not all receiving the same level of service from Canada Post. I recognize that people who live in subdivisions built in the last 30 years are served by community mailboxes so a double standard has existed for decades, but at least there was some logic behind that delineation whereas this time around it seems to be based on nothing more than the luck of the draw. Ladner was mere weeks away from being the next Canadian community to be converted when the program was suspended, so if the last federal election had been held a month later, it’s quite possible we’d be in a situation today where Tsawwassen gets home delivery while Ladner is serviced by community mailboxes. How crazy would that be? Crazy enough to be the reality in many places across the country.
Public must overcome stigma associated with mental illness
W
hat do Billy Joel and Eric Clapton have in common besides their musical talent? Clinical depression. What traits did Beethoven, Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill share? Various forms of mental illness. Mental illness is everywhere but it is often hidden behind fear and stigma. By age 40 about 50 per cent of the population will have or will have had a mental illness. In any given year one in five people in Canada will experience a mental health problem. This past Wednesday was #bellletstalk day. You may have seen the ads on TV or heard them on the radio. Each Jan. 31 Bell Canada raises funds through a variety of social media campaigns to help battle the various disorders associated with mental health illnesses. Evert tweet of the twitter hashtag and every share of the Facebook video raises five cents for the cause. That might not seem like a lot but those nickels add up. Last year Bell raised $6.5 million for mental health research and treatment programs. The economic cost of mental illnesses in Canada for the health care system was estimated to be at least $7.9 billion in 1998 — $4.7 billion in care and $3.2 billion in disability and early death. are treatments for mental health problems but there are no defining causes for them. Rather, the illnesses are the result of complex interactions amongst genetic, biological, personality and environmental factors. For some reason mental health is difficult to talk about. It is OK to talk about cancer, heart disease and other ailments with friends and family, but not so much when it comes to taking about bipolar disorder, anorexia or depression. One statistic that is worth noting is that 70 per cent of mental illness diagnoses are identified in childhood and adolescent years. To me this says we have an opportunity to address potential problems before they occur. Reaching out to the kids in our community would appear to
be critical. The total number of 12 to 19 year olds in Canada at risk for developing depression is a whopping 3.2 million and Canada’s youth suicide rate is the third highest in the industrialized world. With Pink Shirt Day coming up at the end of the month, I would implore parents, grandparents, all family members, educators and coaches to keep an eye open and hone your listening skills when you are amongst the kids. A kind word or simple “How are you?” can open up a conversation that may need to happen. It may appear incredibly obvious but there are some simple habits to follow that can go a long way to promoting wellness and combatting mental health problems. Nutritional health, exercise and experiencing nature should be a daily ritual for our youth and others suffering from the pain of mental illnesses. Annual programs like #Bellletstalk and Pink Shirt Day are fantastic reminders that create awareness for real world problems but is more important to keep our eyes wide open and have really big ears all year round. Urban wetlands must be nurtured
Editor: We ignore wetlands at our peril. Today is World Wetlands Day, so we should all be thinking of this crucial element of our environment. These are not just boggy wastelands, but jewels that perform critical roles in the wellbeing of our planet. These diverse ecosystems provide resources, food, timber, medicine and habitat for wildlife throughout the world. As more wetlands are destroyed for development, drought and pollution rises, and less carbon is captured. Climate
change is reflecting this. Urban wetlands should be nurtured, not wasted, for they are essential for healthy and sustainable urbanization. They absorb rainfall to help prevent flooding and filter waste products from run off. Our growing population faces many challenges, and some cities have been able to create wetlands for recreational space and wildlife habitat. Wetlands must be integral to urban planning needs. Wetlands are increasingly under threat. Burns Bog and Roberts Bank, both RAMSAR sites, are being eyed by developers,
while our city is seemingly indifferent to the plight of these sensitive sites which face erosion, damage and perhaps complete destruction. The Port of Vancouver’s proposed Terminal 2 will enable an increase in container vessels to load and unload cargo. Good for business? Questionable. Good for wildlife? Definitely not. Damage from construction cannot be mitigated in any meaningful way as biofilm can’t be bought, manufactured or imported. Perhaps Delta values trade, industry and tax dollars more than our wet-
lands, farms, oceans and wild spaces, but these too can generate revenue, and even more importantly, create a balanced alternative to wholesale industrialization. Environmental and socio-community considerations are just as important for a healthy community. Wetlands are important. The Fraser estuary, ALR lands, Boundary Bay, Burns Bog and Roberts Bank, among others, are all threatened by continued urbanization and industrial proposals. Let us carefully consider what we are sacrificing. Liz Macdonald
City must step up to preserve fishing heritage
Editor: Re: Last voyage for iconic vessel, Jan. 17 The recent demise of the fish packer Mitchell Bay could have been avoided and a part of the great history of Delta’s fishing industry could have been saved. I recently learned that a proposal was made to save the Mitchel Bay by Spiros Falcos of Speed’s Pub who was prepared to spend his own money to
repair the vessel and place it on the carriage of the old Massey’s Machine Shop. The plan was to place a permanent roof over it and maintain it as part of the fishing industry for all to see. This plan was rejected by Delta’s planning department. For years, starting with fishermen like Nick Stevens and Ken Taylor and former Delta Museum curator Michael Duncan,

people have been trying to get the local governing body to recognize and display the fishing heritage of the whole of Delta. Since 2009 a few of us interested in doing just that have requested help from local government but have been denied a location to display the great history of the pioneer fishing families and fish canneries that were once along the shores of the Fraser River in Delta.
Millions of dollars have been spent by Delta to recognize the farming industry and some municipal structures, but very little has been spent to preserve the history of the fishing industry. It is hoped that that will change with a new mayor and council this fall. When private funding is offered to preserve that history, it should be encouraged, not denied. Douglas George Massey
There’s hope for ICBC if claims dep’t improves
Editor: As a former mayor and at one time a senior manager with ICBC responsible for corporate marketing and claims operations, still with a passion for local and provincial politics, I offer the following: ICBC claims is in disarray and requires fixing. ICBC’s board and political leadership sets policy while its president and senior managers are responsible for its opera-
tions and financial well being. There have been few capable presidents; Paul Taylor was not one of them. Cast blame where it should rest, in operations, not at Liberal leadership candidates. ICBC can and should be saved by knowledgeable and competent claims professionals at its helm. Housecleaning is paramount to its future success. Doug Husband
Crosswalks are dangerous places Editor: Re: Hit-and-run driver sought, Jan. 26 Hmm. Another pedestrian struck on a crosswalk in Tsawwassen. Am I the only one to notice that pretty much all the pedestrian/vehicle incidents have occurred in crosswalks? Not crazy jaywalkers taking their lives into their own hands; scofflaws who disregard regulations. Nope. Nice folk obeying traffic rules and crossing at designated crosswalks. Our corporation (sorry, city) decided to put up a
fence on 12th Avenue to force people to cross at these crosswalks, herding them into these high-risk areas. If memory serves, it cost somewhere upwards of $50,000. Last time I was struck by a car, it was in a crosswalk. My friend and neighbour Dave was mowed down dead last year in a crosswalk. The guy in the next hospital bed to my mom’s boyfriend was struck in a crosswalk. Small wonder that I jaywalk. And I’m still limber enough to vault that fence. Billy Mitchell

nity again last month. The club held a jamboree for its U5 to U9 age groups and food drive at the Dugald Morrison Park turf field in Ladner, raising just shy of $300 as well as approximately 500 food items for Deltassist. Poor weather prevented the club from hosting the second day of the jamboree. The soccer club is striving to build community awareness and put a focus on giving back to the community, said head of player development Russ
Heggie. The cash donations will go towards a Coldest Night of the Year fundraising event Deltassist is hosting in North Delta, he added. He said there was also a concession stand run by Morgan and Geoff Dolejsi in support of BC & Alberta Guide Dogs. Another soccer jamboree benefitting Deltassist, a non-profit community and family services organization, is planned for March, Heggie said. The club also held one in December.

Humble and kind
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness...” Galatians 5:22-23 That’s the title of a song I recently heard. It reminded me of words of wisdom my dad always said to me before I would go out to perform. “Stay humble and be kind no matter how famous or successful you become.” Most of you don’t know this, but we moved here from South Africa about 13 years ago to follow God’s call on our lives. I was a recording artist with EMI before we moved to Canada so I did a lot of performing. In this world where we are expected to do and be many things, we need to

remind ourselves often what life really is about. Too many times we leave kindness behind yet kindness is king. It brings change to everything. I want to encourage you to remember this. Being humble and kind will

serve you much better than being arrogant, prideful and cruel. Ultimately the true win in life is leaving a legacy of kindness. In 2018 we need more people on a campaign to just be kind and love people. So let’s raise humble and kind kids, have kind marriages, be kind friends and lead kind lives. Let kindness guide your words and actions. It’s not about what people do for you or to you. It’s about the kindness you decide to shine through you. Be kind to yourself. Be kind to a world that needs to be reminded kindness is a language we can all choose to speak and we can all understand.

Following gym etiquette keeps everyone happy
Well on Your Way P.J. WREN
I don’t hang out in gyms much anymore (one of the perks of owning a studio), however, I recently dropped into one and was reminded of gym-like behaviours. It’s like watching a pack of animals in the Serengeti. Everyone has his or her section around the watering hole (the watering hole being the squat rack in this case), sharing resources, occasionally interacting and even at times displaying some aggression. It’s a total pack mentality. Watching all this the other day also reminded me of gym etiquette, or more precisely, the lack thereof. I find people fall into one of three gym etiquette profiles. The first type are the ones who are new to the whole gym-going experience, and they just don’t know any better. It’s like when you were learning how to ride a bike. The pedaling part you knew about, cause you’d seen it, but getting on the bike, staying on the bike and braking was not something you could visually teach yourself. You had to learn. The second type is the person who frequents the gym, but is unaware of the fact they are one sweat
drop away from having a dumbbell thrown at them. And finally, there’s the third type of gym-goer who couldn’t care less about those around them and struts around like they own the place. Don’t worry about those, though. There is a special place in Heaven for that lot. What are the rules of the gym, you might be asking yourself? In my opinion, there are nine rules of etiquette that will make your workout experience, and those around you, pleasant and civil: 1. Do not hog all of the equipment. Yes, we get it, you like to super set your program. However, just make sure others around you can work on that piece of equipment too. For new gym-goers, if you would like to use a piece of equipment that someone else is on, simply ask them, “Can I work in?” And then work in when their set is done. 2. No cell phones on the gym floor. There is nothing more annoying than seeing “selfies” being taken, and texts being exchanged. Not only is this just ridiculous to witness, it is also distracting and takes away from your workout. Trust me, your Instagram account will survive the 45 minutes without an update. 3. Remember, you are not the only one. If you like to listen to music, great, just please no singing, humming, whistling or even air guitar. Leave that for the drive home. 4. Please honour your workout partners. Don’t clang your weights together, drop your weights on the ground with drama, and grunt and groan through your set. Yes, we
are struggling too with our own workout, but you don’t hear us sounding like a wounded Beluga whale while doing so. 5. Smell nice. Working out can be stinky business and that’s why they make this amazing product called deodorant. So, please use it. 6. Don’t smell too nice. With that being said, please don’t swing the other end of the pendulum and douse yourself in perfume, cologne, hairspray or stinky body lotion. 7. Wipe. Sweating is messy business, so please wipe up after yourself. I suggest taking this one step further and bring a towel to the gym and sit on it, drape it over any gym equipment that you use, and use your towel as a barrier between you and the mat when doing floor work. 8. Only healthy people please. If you are sick, please stay at home. The biggest cesspool of germs originates in two places: kids and gym equipment. Please don’t add to the cesspool. 9. Nobody is watching you. Probably one of the biggest fears a new gymgoer has is that others are watching them and judging them. That couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, everyone is far too concerned with what’s going on with them that you are really just a blip on their radar. Nothing more. So fear not, go forth and be fit. Library podcast recommends hidden gems
Are you looking for something good to read? Or watch? Or listen to? Fraser Valley Regional Library’s (FVRL) new ReadRadio podcast sees library staff highlight some of the library’s books, movies and TV shows that you might not know about. “ReadRadio, an initiative of our online Reading Room, is a great example of how FVRL delivers new and engaging online services to the community,” says Heather Scoular, director of customer expe-
rience. “FVRL’s ReadRadio is unique in the world of library podcasts, as we are the first Canadian public library to use the medium as a recommendation platform.” FVRL’s diverse staff members have a range of backgrounds, interests and expertise, but the one thing they all share is a passion for great stories and ideas. Upcoming episodes will introduce listeners to some hard-boiled detective series, creepy gothic thrillers, fairy-tale
flavoured teen romances and more. “Library staff are having a lot of fun producing these podcasts,” says Scoular. “Even our CEO Scott Hargrove couldn’t resist hosting an episode to share his love of science fiction. His review of book turned Netflix series Altered Carbon drops Feb. 9.” ReadRadio is available on SoundCloud, iTunes and several other outlets. New episodes are released every other Friday.

trampoline safety sessions
Delta Gymnastics will be holding two free trampoline safety information sessions next week in response to the public’s need for timely and accurate information. The sessions will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the Delta Sport Development Centre in Ladner. “With the warm weather just around the corner back yard trampolines will come out of storage,” said Richard Woo, Delta Gymnastics’ fundamental and specialty coordinator, who will be leading the sessions. “With that comes the need for trusted material on trampoline safety, maintenance and an outline of the trampoline rules that Delta Gymnastics utilizes.” With the growing number of viewers watching backyard trampoline tricks on YouTube, the gym club says this session is well timed. Among the issues that cause injury is when multiple users of different weights and

Budding artists from Beach Grove Elementary have created their own masterpieces with the help of members of the South Delta Artists Guild. Grade 4/5 students in Dale Cotter’s class accepted an invitation from the guild and descended on Gallery 1710 last week. Artists prepared the studio for the interested children as canvases were covered with gesso and allowed to dry to make a smooth, flexible paint surface. Pictures taken at the aquarium made colourful illustrations and the children each chose a favourite. A discussion followed on locating the light source in an underwater scene. The paint palette was a plastic plate with several colours, both whites and darks, placed near the edge, and medium to make the paint flow smoothly. A spray of water cov-

The centre of interest for the most important fish was located on the canvas rectangle. A busy two hours later, aided by artist mentors, the students were signing their names and were ready to hang their paintings. Members of the public can view the work at Gallery 1710 (1710-56th St., Tsawwassen) in conjunction with the TGIF II show that runs through
to Sunday. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The South Delta Artists Guild has a monthly meeting on Monday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. The demonstrator will be Enda Bardell, who will present watercolour techniques. All aspiring artists are welcome to attend. A new show, Fast and Loose, opens on Thursday, Feb. 8 and can be viewed Thursday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Gallery 1710.

Following Council’s adoption of a new Heritage Strategy, a study of heritage conservation areas in Ladner was initiated. The study is to explore the possibility of expanding or adding to existing heritage conservation areas in Ladner. Heritage conservation areas are intended to protect existing heritage landmarks and landscapes, encourage preservation and restoration of heritage buildings or structures, and ensure that new development is sensitive to the heritage context. The session will be an opportunity to discuss these issues, as well as how heritage property owners might benefit for their added responsibilities as heritage stewards. Ice Hawks win Tunnel Cup Delta dumps Richmond 4-1 and in the process clinches best record in PJHL IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Delta Ice Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back in an impressive 4-1 win over the Richmond Sockeyes Tuesday night at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The win was Delta’s 36th of the season and also clinched the inaugural Tunnel Cup Series. The teams split the season series 2-2, but Delta claimed the cup thanks to an extra point earned in a 6-5 overtime loss in Richmond in December. The victory also marked the first for new head coach Steve Robinson who assumed the role last Friday when general manager Darren Naylor decided to relinquish his coaching duties so he could concentrate full-time on coaching the Nanaimo Clippers. “The guys rose up. We expected it to be a playoff atmosphere and intensity and it played out that way,” said Robinson. “The guys were fired up. It wasn’t a perfect game, but the compete level was high and the guys came through.” Delta jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Jonathan Rees and Daniel Rubin. Richmond got one back as Jordan Funk beat goalie Jordan Naylor top shelf on the power play midway through the first, but any momentum Richmond got was shortlived as Alex Suprynowicz scored less than two minutes later to restore the two-goal lead. Mark Epshtein closed out the scoring in the third. Delta outshot Richmond 41-23. “It’s a good team over there,” said Richmond coach Brett Ruesch. “You have to come prepared all the time. I think we weren’t prepared right off the get go, got behind in the first period and it

There were some good points, we killed off a fiveminute power play in the second and momentum kind of swung a bit, but we couldn’t capitalize.” With three games remaining in the regular season, Robinson said the goal now is to continue to jell with the team. “It’s really about finding a rhythm with the guys and getting systems in place, so when we go into the playoffs there is a comfort between them and me
in what we are expecting,” he said. “The reception from the guys has been great. It’s great for me that they were very welcoming and happy to have a coach back in here and the fit between the guys and their talent and work level and what I want to do, I think we can have a great run here. “There wouldn’t be any other situation I would do, but being a Delta resident and knowing as many of the guys and seeing the team play so well, it’s
exciting to be a part of.” Icing… Delta was well represented at Monday’s Prospects game. Rees, Liam Visram, Michael Araki-Young, Isiah Hendricks, Magnus Cheung and goalie Jordy Engleson all saw action for the Tom Shaw Conference which dropped a 4-3 shootout decision to the Harold Brittain Conference. Both Rees and ArakiYoung scored third period goals and were each

named stars of the game. Besides the Tunnel Cup, Delta clinched its second straight Tom Shaw Conference first place finish with its win Tuesday and will also have best record in the league for the first time since 2006. Delta hits the road this weekend for a Saturday game in Port Moody and Sunday in Burnaby against Grandview. Their final regular season game is Tuesday against Port Moody, 7:35 p.m. at the LLC.

OBITUARIES
SMYTH, John Michael June 9, 1940 - February 2, 1988 In memory of a beloved husband, father and grandfather. “Nothing can ever take away the love a heart holds dear. Fond memories linger every day, remembrance keeps him near.” Sadly missed by your wife, Gladys; daughters, Sheryl and Stephanie; and grandsons, Daniel, Garrett and Cameron (who you did not get to meet).
Richard passed away peacefully in Delta Hospice at the age of 82 after a fulfilling life. Born in Brighton on the south coast of England, he remembered the War years quite well. At Imperial College, University of London, he earned a degree in Metallurgy, and after working for a few years he came to Canada with his wife Val in 1962. After a couple of career adjustments, he became a Patent Agent, at one time a partner in his own firm, and finished his career as the Director of Patents and Licensing for Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, a job that he found particularly interesting. He was a keen sailor, first of dinghies, then small yachts, and finally a powerboat, and he and the family spent much time on the water. He and Val loved to travel and made the most of opportunities, particularly in retirement. He bore his cancer diagnosis philosophically and courageously, and it hardly limited his activities until the last few months of his life. He was the dearly loved and loving husband of Val, and the loving and proud father of Andrew and Katrina. His five grandchildren were a source of much pleasure and pride. He will be remembered with gratitude and love by Val, Andrew and his wife Christine, Katrina and her husband Chris, and by his grandchildren Annika, Kendra, Peter, Chloe and Callum. A Memorial service will be held at St. David’s Anglican Church, Tsawwassen, on Saturday, February 10 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Delta Hospice Society or to any Cancer charity. Online condolences may be placed at www.deltafuneral.ca Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040

OLSON (Parsons), Dorothy October 25, 1931 - January 24, 2018 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our wonderful Mom, Grandma & Auntie Dot. She passed away very quickly after a very brave fight. We will all miss her warm, loving heart & her wonderful laugh. Mom loved her flowers, tennis (go Fed!), birds & her music. She touched many with her volunteering in Ladner. In her younger years, she spent alot of her time playing tennis, bowling, curling & gardening. Dorothy was pre-deceased by her husband Frank Parsons and husband Arthur Olson, She is lovingly remembered by her children; Ron, Kathy & Susy (Steve), grandchildren; Cody, Dusty, Britton, Quinn (Sarah), Michelle (Bill) & great grandchildren; Natasha, Travis, Kristi & Emily & kitty Lilly. Many thanks to all the staff @ Delta Hospital 1North & Surrey Memorial ICU Unit for all their expertise & wonderful care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPCA or charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Brenda passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis. She is survived by many family members including her father Terry and two sons, Isaac (15) and Andrew (13). Brenda grew up on Westham Island where she enjoyed working on the family farm and helping her Dad on his commercial fishing boat. She could fillet a salmon like few people can. Brenda completed the CGA program in 2001 working as an accountant and business analyst. She was an active community member and passionate about education, serving one term as a school trustee. A devoted and much-loved mother, Brenda will be remembered for her smile and laugh, as someone who loved to share a great meal and for her ability to gather family and friends, hosting many events in her home. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Kin Village for their care and support.
STEWART, Ann Marie (nee Davies) August 3, 1941 - January 29, 2018 The first 74 years of Ann’s 76 years were a version of the Canadian dream. She was born on August 3, 1941 in Winnipeg to Newton and Clara Davies, but grew up in Esquimalt, BC. While a nursing student at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, she met Officer Cadet Robert (Bob) Stewart at a dance at Royal Roads Military College, and they married in 1962. Bob’s naval career was short, but his engineering degree took them to Ontario, Illinois, Oregon, England, Malaysia and BC. They lived in 13 houses in their first 14 years. Later, Bob took over Delta Steel Industries in Ladner, and they stayed put in Tsawwassen in a cliffside house. On Bob’s retirement, they designed and built their retirement home on Chilliwack Mountain. While Bob was working, Ann was raising three sons. As they grew independent, Ann worked in Bob’s company keeping the books. Ann loved to travel, and she was proud that she and Bob had visited 29 countries, every Canadian province and every American state. She was an avid sports fan, and curled for many years. Ann was an active member of her community and her church and well loved by many, including her friends from her days as a nursing student, friends she met through Bob’s military and business careers and hobbies, and her many Beta Sigma Phi sorority sisters. The dream came apart in her last year. In April 2017, they were about to go on a three-month trip around the world when Bob was accidently killed while clearing their property in Chilliwack after an ice storm. Ann grievously missed her husband of 54 years but bravely busied herself establishing a new life. When an extremely aggressive cancer overtook her, she faced her pending death with the same remarkable courage, protecting her family to the end. She died in Chilliwack’s Cascade Hospice on January 29, 2018. She is survived by her three sons: Ron, Brian and Darrell; their wives: Kathleen, Jo-Ann and Tamara; three grandchildren from Brian: Kristi, Michael and Bailey; two step grandchildren and a great grandchild from Tamara; and Ann’s brother, John Davies with his wife Lynne, daughters Janine, Suzanne and Anne-Marie and grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on February 7 at 2:00 pm at Chilliwack United Church, 45835 Spadina Avenue, Chilliwack, BC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 10th at 1pm at the Cedar Park Church in Ladner. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the MS Society of Canada.
