More Delta greenhouses plan to make the switch to pot in advance of the federal government’s legalization of recreational marijuana this summer. The latest that appears ready to join what’s expected to be a multi-billion-dollar market is the SunSelect greenhouse in East Delta. Representatives from Canopy

Growth Corp. met with city officials late last year about the company’s intention to start growing marijuana in Delta. The greenhouse on Hornby Drive is now undergoing security enhancements. Last fall, Canopy Growth Corp. announced it would develop up to three million square feet of greenhouse growing capacity at a pair of sites in B.C. to grow marijuana. Canopy said in a statement

that it entered into a joint venture agreement with a largescale greenhouse operator where it will be a majority shareholder of a new company called BC Tweed Joint Venture Inc. The name of that greenhouse operator, however, has been kept secret. Health Canada, where the application was submitted, refused to provide details or even confirm the application, citing business confidentiality.

Canopy Growth CEO Bruce Linton said in a statement last year the operator currently grows peppers but millions would be spent in a transformation to cannabis production. Although the location has been kept under wraps, a letter to the city from Canopy confirms the Hornby Drive greenhouse would be converted. The company stated it’s applying to become authorized for the production, possession, sale,

shipment, transportation as well as delivery of dried marijuana plants and seeds at the premises located at 10250 Hornby Dr. Meanwhile, in another deal involving an unknown company, a greenhouse on 104th Street in East Delta is reportedly also converting to pot. Last summer, Village Farms International made public its plans to cultivate medical and non-medical marijuana. VILLAGE: see Page 3

Crossing left out of speech

Paton concerned tunnel replacement might not be coming for a long time SANDOR GYARMATI

It looks like you can forget about any kind of replacement for the George Massey Tunnel for a long time. Delta South MLA Ian Paton had that grim prediction after the NDP government’s speech from the throne Tuesday, which promised to replace the Pattullo Bridge within five years but made no mention of replacing the tunnel. Premier John Horgan said his government has funding earmarked for the bridge replacement, but that’s money that likely would have been heading for the suspended George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project, which now has a bleak chance of proceeding, warned the first-term Liberal MLA. “It’s a very disappointing throne speech for Delta. This is ridiculous. Don’t expect even another tunnel, if that’s what they eventually decide, for at least another 10 years if the NDP stays in government,” Paton told the Optimist following the throne speech. The 81-year-old Pattullo Bridge is owned and operated by TransLink, which has spent millions over the years trying to maintain the aging structure and warned it’s over 30 years past its useful lifespan. TransLink has a plan to replace it with another four-lane bridge, something the City of Delta argues is not enough and will further encourage drivers to use the Alex Fraser Bridge as well as

Delta South Liberal MLA Ian Paton says not to expect a new crossing for at least another 10 years. the tunnel. The tunnel and Highway 99 corridor fall within the province’s jurisdiction. The NDP government announced last September it’s suspending the $3.5-billion George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project, which would have seen a 10-lane bridge constructed as well as a series of road and transit upgrades, pending a third-party technical review. That review, which could see a different crossing recommended or nothing at all, won’t be completed until sometime this spring. Much to Delta’s chagrin, most Metro Vancouver mayors have argued

her concerns about food security. “It’s a lot of dough and people see the dollar signs. It’s obviously very lucrative, so they will follow the money. The province at least gave local governments the authority to say where they’ll have retail outlets, but we only have a five per cent land base where we can grow food and I was always told never count on other

against the project, including some opposed to building any new infrastructure to replace the tunnel, claiming it would encourage more traffic and create a bottleneck at the Oak Street Bridge. They called on the province to direct the money to other projects in the region such as the Pattullo Bridge. “We’re saying the George Massey Tunnel is seismically unsafe now. They’re saying the Pattullo (Bridge) is going to be unsafe five years from now and that’s their commitment. There’s nothing in the throne speech for: A) replacement of the tunnel, even with another tunnel which I could live with if

I find it very disturbing,” she said. The mayor said Delta has received numerous inquiries from parties

that’s what’s decided; or B) a bridge which we have had many consultations on,” said Paton. “Basically, the residents of Delta and South Surrey are going to get nothing.” Delta North NDP MLA Ravi Kahlon, however, disagrees, saying the federal government has expressed interest in providing funding for a multi-government funded Pattullo Bridge project, which is why the bridge, which has a life span on critical, was mentioned. “As far as the Massey Tunnel replacement goes, Ian is well aware there is a review happening of the project and we expect that report to come out

shortly and the next steps will be addressed,” Kahlon explained. Kahlon said since tolls were removed on the Port Mann Bridge, there’s been a four per cent decrease in traffic at the tunnel and Alex Fraser, but added that doesn’t mean there won’t be other action. “As much as I appreciate there’s a challenge there, and I’ve had to sit through that tunnel traffic myself, it’s prudent to do a thoughtful analysis for the region, so we don’t solve one problem and create another. I’m hoping we find a good solution in the next little while, but also addressing our transit needs as well.”

According to Health Canada, 89 licences have been issued to grow medical pot so far, but another 428 applications are in progress. Health Canada would not say how many are from Delta.

A proposed apartment building on Hunter Road in Tsawwassen is already getting the thumbs down even before the application has gone to Delta council for discussion. The proposal, currently in the hands of Delta planning staff, calls for a consolidation of properties into one parcel to develop a five-storey, 52-unit apartment building with two levels of underground parking. Resident Brenda Casey, who lives in one of five four-storey condo buildings that line the east side of the road (single-family homes line the other side where the development

being proposed is way out of character for the neighbourhood. “Kids play along the street, people walk and walk their dogs. I’m in a wheelchair and I feel very safe in the neighbourhood,” she said. “A fivestorey building does not seem to be feasible with two levels of underground parking. All of that traffic trying to get into the underground parking on our tiny cul-de-sac with limited parking on the street and only one side with a sidewalk seems very unsafe and foolish.” Casey said what she would like to see is more attractive little townhouses that people, especially young families, might be able to afford.

“A five-storey building is just out of character for not only our neighbourhood, but for all of Tsawwassen,” she added. “This is not in balance with our official community plan.” Delta’s director of community planning and development Marcy Sangret said the proposal is still under review and has not yet been presented to council for consideration. Sangret said a public information meeting about the proposal will be scheduled, which will give an opportunity for residents to learn about the project and provide feedback. A date has not yet been set for that meeting.

I have written letters to the City of Delta and so has my strata council. This is an unnecessary and unwanted building,” Casey said. “I know another resident in one of the other condos held a meeting late last year and every resident that came out was opposed to this.” She said the condo buildings that are there already have been placed in a considerate manner amongst the individual homes along the tiny culde-sac, but said what is

While many were out enjoying the Family Day long weekend with their families and friends responsibly, others chose to do so in an irresponsible fashion. Delta police are reporting an unusually higher number of suspected impaired drivers with 10 incidents in total. Police said the worst day of the weekend was Saturday and into the

overnight hours of Sunday. “Police dealt with seven impaired drivers in total that day and night throughout Delta. Three of those were during a late night vehicle checkpoint our officers initiated to check for sobriety,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. “This prompted us to go out with a warning on Sunday on social media, reminding drivers that police would be out all weekend checking for impaired driving, and to

implore people to plan ahead for a safe ride home.” Leykauf said the drivers police dealt with received a range of consequences, including four who received 90-day immediate roadside prohibitions, which also come with a 30-day impoundment of the vehicle. One driver also received an administrative roadside prohibition, which requires those who receive it to take part in the Ignition Interlock Program and to apply for a

new driver’s licence with a separate reinstatement fee. “Delta police remind drivers that impaired driving remains a leading cause of serious injury and death on our roads,” said Leykauf. “Any of those drivers over the weekend could have been involved in a serious collision — and they are fortunate that police stopped them before they hurt themselves or injured an innocent person. We remind all drivers there is no excuse to drink and drive.”

Elderly pedestrian run over in parking lot

Two pedestrians were injured in a pair of accidents Tuesday. The first incident occurred around 1 p.m. in Ladner. According to Delta police, an elderly woman fell to the ground after tripping on a speed bump in the Trenant Park Square parking lot and was driven over by a vehicle exiting a parking stall. “Fortunately at this time it appears the elderly

woman has non-life threatening injuries from the incident. The matter remains under investigation,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. The second incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. in North Delta when a driver eastbound on 84th Avenue struck a pedestrian in the crosswalk on 110th Street. The pedestrian, a teen

boy, was taken to hospital for evaluation, but later released. Leykauf said it had just started to snow at the time, and the driver remained on the scene, indicating they had not seen the pedestrian prior to the collision. “Both incidents occurred at low speeds, and drivers are cooperating with police,” Leykauf said.

Beach Grove Elementary creates awareness campaign in effort to keep playground clean IAN JACQUES

Students at Beach Grove Elementary have had enough of area residents and their dogs using their school playground as a toilet. Following a brainstorming session between teachers and principal Rick Hall, Grade 2 teacher Margo Hardy decided that her class would take on an awareness project to bring the issue to light for the community. The students have made signs, which will be posted along the fence in a dog park that is adjacent to the school playground, and the class all wrote letters to the Optimist expressing their feelings. “We just keep finding dog poop by the swings where the kids play,” said Hardy. “I have had students who step in dog poo and then track it all through the classroom. We do have the dog park right beside us, which is great, but people should pick up after their dogs.” Hardy said it’s been an

They are nice dogs, but you have kids with real dog fears and that could be a safety issue. We use the grounds all day long, not just at lunch. We all

“This is a health issue. The playground should be a safe place and free of the dog messes so our kids don’t have to worry about this,” Hall said.

Southpointe Academy senior school principal Gordon Cogan says the independent school is looking to give back by way of a new scholarship for local students.

Southpointe giving back with scholarship for South Delta

Southpointe Academy has launched a new scholarship for locals. The Tsawwassen independent school’s new South Delta Regional Scholarship is for South Delta students entering Grade 11 next year. The school wants to give back to the community, said senior school principal Gordon Cogan. “We want to give an opportunity to those families that may or may not be

able to afford the tuition fees to come here, to give them the opportunity of having a first class education at one of the top independent schools in British Columbia,” he said. The scholarship covers tuition fees for grades 11 and 12, the application fee and new family fee. Meeting the school’s academic standards for admission to Grade 11, having already demonstrated excellence in arts,

athletics or community service and demonstrating a willingness to become involved in and contribute to Southpointe’s co- and extra-curricular programs are included among the eligibility criteria. Applicants will need to submit a resume, a statement of interest and a letter of recommendation/ reference letter. Southpointe Academy can be reached at southpointe.ca or 604-948-8826.

Murphy’s Law

I

TED MURPHY

t would only be fair if Fraser Health acknowledged the argument can work both ways. From outrage over plans to eliminate Delta Hospital’s acute care beds and close its ER overnight to battles over surgical time to disappointment over changes to groups for new moms, there have been multiple occasions over the last 15 years or so where those in Delta have been at odds with the health authority over the provision of services. Some skirmishes have been won, others have been lost, but through it all there’s been a consistent message from Fraser Health: Delta is part of a larger health region so we can’t reasonably expect every service to be provided in our relatively small, end-of-the-road community. It hasn’t necessarily been what we wanted to hear, but the argument had some validity. I raise this point because reasonable access has become an issue in the debate over whether the Delta Hospice Society must put aside its philosophical objections and provide medically assisted deaths. Fraser Health believes the non-profit organization should provide the Medical Assistance in Dying program and could give it an ultimatum in that regard in the near future. Before it comes to that, Fraser Health officials should step back and see what they’ve created in Delta: Many services are provided here but it has become commonplace to travel what the health authority considers a reasonable distance to access all kinds of others. Why should the MAiD program be any different? Is there not some irony in the fact our hospital doesn’t have a maternity ward yet our hospice is being told it should offer medically assisted deaths? If I’m understanding that logic correctly, it doesn’t matter to Fraser Health whether you can be born in Delta, but it wants to make sure you can die here. Forgive me for being flippant, but the hypocrisy and double standard are hard to comprehend. There wouldn’t be an Irene Thomas Hospice to offer medically assisted deaths if the Delta Hospice Society hadn’t raised $8 million to build it, so that fact alone surely must give the society some say in the matter. However, it only makes sense for this issue to ultimately be decided by the reasonable access guidelines Fraser Health has imposed on Delta for years.

hen stripped of their bells and whistles and examined at their most basic components, almost every single thing in the world is bafflingly simple. That is not at all to say that the affairs of the world cannot be incomprehensibly arcane — the political situation south of the border makes that clear enough — but that the individual notes that make up the melody and harmony of existence are few, finite and predictable. It is the interaction between them that creates the mosaic tapestry of interwoven symphonies that simultaneously allows you to enjoy the warmth of the sun on your face even as it draws the pattern of your fingerprint, the signature of you. Yesterday, I was reminded of all this when I popped open Facebook. There, in an article by Science Alert, was a photo of a single atom, isolated and suspended by electric fields. The picture was not overly attractive and the atom itself was simply a dot against a black background surrounded by equipment, but it was a photograph of the building block of the world, and it was beautiful. From that single dot comes

all of the diversity of the world around us (mind you, there are over five sextillion atoms in a droplet of water, so there is a lot of chaos in between). Everything can be reduced in this way. For example, the global diversity of 7.6 billion completely distinct people are written using only four letters in our DNA. Everything is far more alike than we realize and far simpler than we like to admit. As I have mentioned before, there are only two political truths: a government must take care of its people and it must pay its bills. The interaction of these two truths gives rise to a myriad of issues like the situation between B.C. and Alberta now. In the same way, there are really only three laws: do not initiate force, do not steal and do not lie.

Respectively, they comprise criminal, property and contract law, but together they create the backlog in our provincial court system and that business with ICBC. So, if there are simple truths in the world, why are we not looking for wisdom in that simplicity to address the complex problems in the world? We can look at the world and see strangers in a strange land or we can see brothers and sisters who need the same things that we need. It comes down to what we focus on. Do we stare at the face of our differences or recognize the similarities in the eyes, thoughts and necessities of those around us? While I would love to say I have an easy answer to the complex issues facing the world, there is no one solution. However, there is a lesson to be learned from the nature of things: no matter how complex the problem may seem, there is a deeper, simpler underlying truth. Pursuit of that truth is the ideal problem solving process. Community advocate Nicholas Wong ran as an independent candidate in Delta South in last year’s provincial election. He finished second with more than 6,400 votes. He can be reached at mrnicholaswong@gmail.com.

Teacher would like to see students without phones

Editor: Cell phones are making our kids sick. I am increasingly concerned as parent and educator about our children’s growing dependence on their cell phones. Our children now seem incapable of regulating their own use and phones are a cesspool of distraction. There is mounting evidence the constant urge to check their phones is contributing to an increase in levels of anxiety among our young people. I would urge parents to monitor their children’s

use of their phones and especially be vigilant about the amount of time spent with their phones. There is no need for children to bring their phones to school as we provide students with computers, laptops, tablets, chrome books, etc. to adequately meet their needs for research and internet access. I would especially advise parents not to let their children sleep with their cell phones in their bedrooms. I would love to have a larger conversation with

posted on the provincial website in January of this year in response to a freedom of information request last August. Remember this is the report the former Liberal government buried and denied it ever existed. Why were none of the alternatives proposed in the TEC report ever included in the public information sheets at the public hearings regarding a new Fraser River crossing? This was not a bidding process as outlined by Schofield, but a comparison of alternatives, therefore all information

should have been made available to the public. Was it because a decision prompted by the Port of Vancouver and its tenants to remove the George Massey Tunnel and build a bridge had already been made? The report from experts explains how modern tunnels are safer than an open highway, and that upgrading the existing tunnel would make it safer as well. Not sure when the facts are released that they should be considered fear mongering. Douglas George Massey

Time to announce we’re getting a new tunnel Editor: I know that discussions continue, but I submit that the time must surely be nigh when Premier John Horgan will be able to announce with enthusiasm that the George Massey Tunnel connecting

Delta and Richmond will be replaced not by a massive bridge, but by (ta da!) tunnels. The George Massey Tunnel has proven itself, Mr. Premier, as tunnels prove themselves around the world.

Affordable, safe, easy on the environment, the crossing of the Fraser should, I submit, go under, not over. It would be a great announcement as we head optimistically into spring. Duncan Holmes

Global economies are shedding dependence on oil Editor: Re: Wine war hits Westham, Feb. 9 It is interesting how a provincial dispute between B.C. and Alberta not only affects the Okanagan wineries but also affects Delta’s Angel Estate Winery, making Errol Sherley the unwitting pawn in this dispute. This dispute between two NDP governed provinces is a fight for the political survival of both

premiers. B.C. Premier John Horgan ran against the Kinder Morgan pipeline as part of the NDP platform during the election, and when the NDP entered into an agreement with the Greens in order to govern, that position was irrevocably consolidated. On the flip side Alberta Premier Rachel Notley, who against the odds took power from the Conservative dynasty, must vociferously defend the oil sands for her political survival, particularly now that the right has been consolidated under Jason Kenny. In the lead of it all is Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government which has given

approval of the Kinder Morgan pipeline. I am supportive of Trudeau and think he has done a good job on many issues, however I vehemently disagree with this decision. In defence of B.C’s environment, Horgan’s position is the right one for our province and I will provocatively state it is also the right decision for Alberta and Canada. The planning for both Trans Mountain and the twinning of the Kinder Morgan pipeline was initiated in a different time for the global oil markets when high oil prices put Alberta in a commanding position provincially and nationally. The paradigm shift

B.C. is being asked to take all the risk but get none of the benefit Editor:

Re: Wine war hits Westham, Feb. 9 Although I feel sorry for the wineries that have been dealt this blow, I suspect if they are as entrepreneurial as they purport to be they will set their sights to finding other markets. This pipeline is concerning. Bitumen is an unknown when it comes to how it will behave in an ocean spill. Why should we risk our coastline for something that will bring only short-term benefit (during pipeline construction) to B.C.? If they wanted to build a tank farm next to the North Saskatchewan in Edmonton or the Bow River in Calgary I suspect Albertans might have a different perspective on this. We are being asked to bear all the risk and none of the benefit. I don’t see how this is in our interests whatsoever even if it means short term pain to the wineries. Jane McCall

Cap on house size must be removed from bylaw

Editor: I write to highlight the most polarizing issue in Delta: suites or no suites, housing cap or no housing cap, affordability vs density. Our current housing crisis demands more rental housing given the shortage of roofs over the heads of families and that is a concern. Residents definitely look to the city for cooperation and guidance. Delta’s zoning bylaw needed a new facelift after nearly 40 years and hence began the work to revise it.

Let’s start with the restrictive house size cap bylaw that exists only for North Delta that was introduced nearly 16 years ago. At the public hearing for this bylaw, a number of issues were raised stating that it is discriminatory to apply house size caps only to North Delta, the house size limits do not meet the needs of large extended families living together, lack of public consultation in timely manner, etc. At the public hearing attended by 175 people, in which two spoke in favour

and 17 spoke against, this bylaw was passed. Needless to say, it is an important issue for residents of North Delta. More recently, two public information meetings were conducted in 2016 as Delta looked to update its zoning bylaw. More than 1,500 questionnaires were filled out to give Delta direction on the bylaw: • 85 per cent objected to minimum lot width of 15 metres (49 feet) required for a single detached dwelling with a secondary suite yet it made its way to

the zoning bylaw. • 86 per cent were oppos ed to limiting the size of an accessory structure yet it made its way into the bylaw. • 89 per cent were opposed to permitting secondary suite parking only in the side or rear yard yet it made its way to bylaw. On Jan. 30, the public spoke again opposing the changes and it was heard by Delta council. A housing cap needs to be entirely and completely removed from the zoning bylaw and a fair and

uniform maximum floor space ratio should come back into effect for all of Delta. A law backdated 16 years is outdated in today’s time. From fairness perspective, bylaws like housing cap may have served a purpose in the past but need to be updated now. Residents of Delta look forward to a collaborative approach from the city and move forward together in making Delta welcoming and adapting to the changing dynamics. Simran Walia

April, 2013 and accuses individuals of fearmongering. The real damning and shocking information is the fact the BC Liberals deliberately buried the report and failed to disclose options for upgrading and twinning the tunnel that were outlined in the report. The fix was in for a bridge before the review process began on Sept. 27, 2012. Instead of appropriately calling it the Massey Crossing Renewal Project, the Liberals called it the Massey Tunnel

Replacement Project, indicating intent to remove the tunnel. That was the plan from the start as proven by communications of federal and provincial governments, the Port of Vancouver, Fraser Surrey Docks and vested interests prior to the 2012 announcement. These parties, under the umbrella of Western Canada’s Transportation Forum (WESTAC), agreed the tunnel needed replacing. President, Ruth Sol wrote: “…this is what my

members have been telling me: George Massey Tunnel needs to be replaced — to increase its capacity and the draft above the tunnel so larger ships can access the facilities on the Fraser River.” Information was being shared about bridge height and channel depth required to facilitate LNG tankers and Panamax cargo ships up the river. This information was withheld from the public. This revelation is truly damning and shocking. Susan Jones

Better use for police time than checking seat belts Editor: I’ve lived in Delta longer than our current police chief has been alive, so I’ve known many of our locals who’ve been maimed or killed while using crosswalks, particularly in Tsawwassen. That’s why I want to know why a Delta police officer and a volun-

teer reserve member were monitoring seat belt usage at the west end of 12th Avenue near English Bluff Road instead of ticketing bad drivers at the intersections along 56th Street last Sunday? I let the constable and the reserve volunteer know what I thought about

checking seat belts when they should have been ticketing bad drivers at busy intersections, but I don’t think they appreciated what I was saying. Monitoring seat belt usage, which is high, doesn’t improve the plight of pedestrians and cyclists. Greg J. Edwards

LATEST INNOVATION FOR HAIR LOSS TREATMENT Hair Loss can be an embarrassing issue. Male and female pattern hair loss is a genetic problem that can leave you feeling helpless. Options, like prescription drugs, are often partially effective and carry the potential for unwanted side effects. Surgical restoration can be expensive and does not treat the underlying medical problems.

Our blood plasma (PRP) contains active growth factors which can promote hair growth. The growth factors in the blood cells do their job and hair growth is naturally stimulated jumpstarting the dormant hair back into the growth stage. Clients report a high degree of tolerability. The procedure takes approximately an hour. PRP procedure is suitable for both men and women. It is state of the art, non-surgical, totally natural, alternative procedure used for hair loss or thinning hair. Come and visit Beach Grove Laser Clinic or give them a call 604-943-9339 for more details if PRP is right for you.

Beach Grove Laser Clinic now offers an affordable way for you to regain your hair density back without the surgery or harmful side effects. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for hair restoration involves a simple injection of your own platelets into the scalp.

Acclimatize Your Skin Before the summer sun gets to you!!! Let Us Get Real. The first thing to understand is that u.v. whether from the sun or bulbs is the same. A photon of light is a photon of light. There is no magic change to make a sunbed more risky than the solar uv light. Our sunbeds provide a U.V. spectrum similar to solar uv at noon - 95% UVA and 5% UVB, the strength of the dose may be stronger but the duration is shorter which is why you don’t burn if a sunbed is used properly. In fact cancer care Ontario, in a 2013 report on ultraviolet radiation reported that the melanoma risk for outdoor exposure was 61% versus 15% for indoor devices when used properly. So based on this research, using a sunbed is 4 times less risky than outdoor sun exposure. That is certainly a different message than what is often reported for the risk of indoor sunbed use. Is there a “hidden agenda”? -

The piece required a lot of preparation work as Robb pre-recorded 10 tracks and will play the 11th role live. He’s plan-

ning to save the song for the show’s finale. Robb, who’s been the music director at the Delta Community Music School for nearly two decades, is also planning on showing photos up on a screen during the concert. For the New York Counterpoint piece he’ll have photographs of scenery from the Big Apple, including some

of his own from a recent trip. “I think it will be fun for the audience,” he says. Robb notes The Shepherd on the Rock, composed by Franz Schubert, is also on the set list. “It’s a powerhouse work for soprano and for the clarinet. It’s like a showpiece for both,” he says.

He will be joined by soprano Sinéad White and pianists Bernard Duerksen and Bryn Wiley for the concert. Work from artist Marilyn Atkey will be also be on display during the show. The concert is set for Sunday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m. at Ladner United Church, 4960-48th Ave. Admission is $10 at the door.

Vision board can help you lead art-full life An Art-full Life

MEG & MARY ANN

“Vision without action is a dream. Action without vision is simply passing the time. Action with vision is making a positive difference.” — Joel Barker This time of year means a fresh start. We vow to eat healthier, exercise more, try new things and connect in more meaningful ways with others. So why do we have such difficulties following through with our goals? Some of our ideas may be too grandiose in nature and call for extreme life changes, ones that can’t take place overnight. We are often unprepared to make drastic lifestyle changes and fail to recognize that these take time

and require a lot of effort. We may not also account for life getting in the way. The unexpected can often derail us and also change the course of our life. Priorities change and so does your vision. To live an art-full life, we need to learn that it is OK to re-assess our vision with changes in employment, family issues, health-related problems, etc. This is where vision boards come in. A vision board is a tool used to help clarify what you want in your life. Literally, a vision board is any sort of board on which you display images and words that represent whatever you want to be, do or have in your life. Here’s how to start: To begin the process of reflection and action, set the stage (ambience), gather materials, create a list of questions to ask yourself, then organize and prioritize your ideas on a separate page. The first thing to do when creating a vision board is to sit quietly and start imagining what your perfect

If you want to eat healthier, for instance, an action item may be to designate one day of the week as “Meatless Monday” or find and make a new heart healthy meal during the week Peel it off once you have completed the task and create a whole new one. This will keep you on target and give you a sense of accomplishment. 3. Talk to others about your goals. This will help you be accountable when you need reminding of your goals. Visualization is one of the most powerful mind exercises we can do. Is it time to create your vision board? As Leonardo da Vinci states: “Being willing is not enough; we must do.” Mary Ann Burrows is an artist and creativity coach at Spark Creativity Coaching. Acing this simple test will keep you upright Well on Your Way P.J. WREN

What if you could perform a simple 10- to 20-second test that could tell your doctor that your risk of dying in the next five years may be five times greater than those who can do the test with ease? Science believes that it has that test. And it’s one that you can perform on your own. The sit-rising test (SRT) is a simple functional test assessing a person’s ability to sit on the floor, and then get back up again. In 2012, a study was performed in Brazil by Dr. Claudio Gil Araújo and colleagues on more than 2,000 middle-aged men and women. The subjects, in bare feet, were told before starting the test to not worry about their speed and to sit down cross-legged, and then rise from the floor using minimum amounts of support. They were to only use their legs.

Starting with 10 points, they lost a point each time they had to use their hand, forearm, knee or side of the leg to get up, and a half of point if they lost their balance. After 6.3 years (median), the subjects were followed up and those with a score below eight were two times as likely to die within the next six years compared with those who scored higher. And the people who scored three or less points were more than five times as likely to die within the same period compared to people who scored more than eight points. By contrast, scores in the range of eight and above indicated a particularly low risk of death during the tracking period. “Even more relevant,” reported the investigators, “is the fact that a onepoint increment in the SRT score was related to a 21 per cent reduction in mortality.” So, if you went from an eight to a nine, your mortality rate dramatically decreases. How can the SRT have such a close correlation to living longer? Dr. Araújo is stated as saying: “It is well known that aerobic fitness is strongly related to survival, but our study also shows that maintaining high

levels of body flexibility, muscle strength, powerto-body weight ratio and co-ordination are not only good for performing daily activities but have a favourable influence on life expectancy.” This test has great potential for doctors, physical therapists, trainers and instructors who would like to quickly appraise a middle-aged or older man or woman’s musculo-skeletal fitness. Try the test: Starting with a score of 10, deduct one point every time your hand, forearm, knee or side of leg touches the ground, and a half of point if you lose your balance. 1. Start with feet and sit cross-legged on the floor. 2. Using just your legs, come up off the floor at any speed you want. Essentially you want to keep the ankles crossed and lift the bum up as a unit as you stand. 3. Pause and reverse the position back to crosslegged and seated on the floor. Results: Good — 8 - 10 Fair — 3.5 – 7.5 Poor — 0 - 3 PJ Wren is a local business owner, writer and fitness trainer. Community We are almost halfway through the 2018 Olympic Winter Games where some of the best athletes in the world represent their countries in search of medals. Athletic competition hits us at an emotional level, partly because so much of athletics connects with so much of life — sacrifice, focus, excellence, discipline, achievement, effort, overcoming adversity, competition, winning. What if your walk with God was a sport? The Apostle Paul used the imagery of sports in reference to our spiritual life. He was writing to the church in Corinth, which hosted the Isthmian Games, which ranked second only to the Olympics

Run to win

Minister’s Minute

MIKE MAWHORTER Ladner Baptist Church

in that day. So they were very familiar with athletic competition. He wrote: “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They

do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” (1 Corinthians 9:24–25, NIV) Run to win. Winners in the Isthmian Games received crowns of dried wild celery, which was later changed to pine wreaths. He reminds them that these athletes put all this commitment, discipline and effort into winning a prize that would soon wither and fade. By contrast, the prize that followers of Jesus are competing for is an eternal one. What if your walk with God was a sport? Are you winning? Are you even in the game? This is one place we really should run to win.

We Remember! We Celebrate! We Believe!

Naylor made 36 saves as Delta skated to a 6-2 win for a 2-0 series lead. He had a shutout one night earlier. The series continues this weekend in Burnaby.

Hawks ride Naylor to series lead

Delta takes pair on home ice over Grandview with game three tonight in Burnaby MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

One of the Delta Ice Hawks’ greatest strengths was evident Wednesday night and it took a somewhat sloppy performance in front of him to prove it. The Hawks have opened up a 2-0 lead in their quarter-final series with the Grandview Steelers thanks to a 6-2 home ice win. While the scoreboard was rather lopsided, the balance of the play wasn’t. Delta needed a 36-save performance from Jordan Naylor and a very productive power play to take early command of the best-ofseven affair that continues tonight in Burnaby. Coming off a 4-0 shutout win in

the series opener, Naylor bailed out his teammates with some key early saves. That allowed the Hawks to eventually take control thanks to a four-goal outburst in the second period. It’s easy to forget the recently turned 18-year-old already has an impressive PJHL playoff resumé, having carried the workload a year ago when Delta came within two games of winning the title. “If he is not sharp early that game could have swung a whole lot differently,” agreed Delta coach Steve Robinson, alluding to an opening period that saw the visitors enjoy a 13-7 shot advantage. He made some humongous saves when we were still kind of finding our way.”

After struggling much of the regular season, the Hawks’ power play has been lethal so far. When Kyle Uy banged home a feed from Jordan Deyrmenjian, it was their fifth goal in seven chances. It cooled off in a chippy third period that featured a rash of penalties. Robinson probably didn’t mind as he wants his team relying more on the even strength hockey it’s capable of. “I think five-on-five we didn’t find any rhythm. It is great capitalizing on those power plays but there was a lot of scrambled play. Normally we are a puck possession team. I felt we were chasing the game a bit,” he continued. He expects to see an even more desperate Steelers’ team in game

three as it tries to climb back in the series. The Hawks have also had their trouble at Burnaby Winter Club of late, dropping a pair of 2-1 overtime games. “This is the game (Grandview) will be all in. If they win that game they can sell the message everyone is holding serve and it’s a tight series. We win it’s dagger time with them up against the ropes. I think the guys will dial in and use that to play that classic road game. They know they can play much better,” he said. Captain Gary Dhaliwal has three goals in the series, including a pair in game one. Blake Bonnar added a spectacular shorthanded tally in the opener on an end-to-end rush.

Ogilvie joining Goundrey behind Islanders bench

The Delta Islanders have named Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Famer Andy Ogilvie as co-head coach for the upcoming 2018 B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League season. Oglivie will share the duties with Kyle Goundrey who will be returning for his second season behind the bench. The 53-year-old Ogilvie captured three Mann Cups in his decorated playing career — twice with New West (1989 and 1991) as well with the Coquitlam Adanacs in 2001 when he was named playoff MVP. He played in the National

Lacrosse League for nine years with stops in Buffalo, Calgary and Vancouver; and also suited up for Canada at the world box and field lacrosse championships. He was noted for being a hard-nosed defender and still holds the record for all-time penalty minutes in the Mann Cup. The Peterborough native won a pair of Minto Cup national junior “A” championships with the his hometown Lakers before taking his career out west. He was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2014.

Ogilvie’s task will be trying to help Goundrey get the Islanders back on track after a rough 2017 season that resulted a 4-17 record — a year removed from the club’s first-ever league title. Ogilvie has spent the past two seasons as an assistant with the WLA’s Langley Thunder and also previously worked with Goundrey as part of the WLA Adanacs’ coaching staff. “These two coaches bring a high level of experience and knowledge that will be an asset to a young Delta Islander team moving forward,” said club president Darcy Phillips.

Field lacrosse “free agent” helps her team capture provincial gold MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Laurelle Weisbrod took her promising field lacrosse career down south last summer to play for a Seattle area travelling team.

Laurelle Weisbrod proved to be one very happy “free agent.” With no hometown team to play for at the U15 level, the girls field lacrosse standout from Tsawwassen was assigned to the Surrey Warriors No. 2 team this season. A terrific campaign concluded last weekend in Langley with the Warriors capturing the tier one provincial championship thanks to an 8-5 victory over New Westminster in the title game. The girls opened the tournament with a 5-2 win over Surrey No. 1, then defeated New West 7-2 and Burnaby 6-5, before being edged 7-6 by Ridge Meadows. Weisbrod had a significant role in the championship run, earning two game MVP awards, including the final. Under B.C. Lacrosse rules, when a female player does not have a hometown option to play for, they are designated to a specific team. The Warriors’ home base — South Surrey Athletic Park — was not only a reasonable commute — but the girls were guided by Weisbrod’s Team B.C. coach Jason Carr. Her passion for the game has led

Players (Rylan Weisbrod, Teagan Douglas, Jackson Burbidge) from the U11 Delta Footmen tier two team Laurelle Weisbrod helps coach cheered her on to victory in the provincial U15 tier one final. to an assistant coach role with the Delta Footmen’s U11 team that won bronze earlier this month at the provincial tier two championships. Some of her players, including her brother Rylan, were in Langley to cheer her on. Weisbrod plays the box version of lacrosse as well and suited up at the boys A1 level through Bantam. She also played for a Seattle-area girls field lacrosse team last summer with her aspiration being to eventually continue her career at

the NCAA level. Boxla bits… It was a near miss for the Delta Footmen at the U18 provincial tier one championships in Burnaby. The Pacific Coast Field Lacrosse League regular season champions took a perfect record into Sunday’s gold medal game before dropping a heartbreaking 8-7 decision to the Adanacs No. 1. The Footmen had earlier defeated Langley (14-1), Adanacs No. 1 (12-5) and New West No. 1 (8-4).

MCGILL, Colin Leslie March 22, 1958 - January 28, 2018 It is with great sadness that the family wishes to announce that Colin passed away after a short, unbeatable, but hard fought battle with cancer.

BUDNICK, John Dennis “Bud” November 18, 1919 - February 6, 2018 It is with much sadness and sorrow that the family announces that John or Bud as everyone knew him, passed away on February 6th, 2018 at the KinCentre Care Home in Tsawwassen. Bud was a devoted husband to Blanche, father to Gayle and Marc, father-in-law to Alison, grandfather to Thomas, Sarah & Nathalie and a friend to many. Bud was a WWII veteran, a Freemason and a Shriner. He had a continuous positive outlook on life and was a fighter to the very end. Bud turned 98 years old on November 18th, 2017. He was born seven miles North of Sturgis, Saskatchewan and spent his youth there. He was the oldest of fifteen siblings. Bud and Blanche met in Montreal during his time there for the RCAF. In 1954, Bud and Blanche married. Later Bud, Blanche and a newly arrived baby Gayle were stationed in Kuppenheim, Germany and Sardinia, Italy for six years. Afterwards they moved to Blanche’s home city of Vancouver where Marc was born. They eventually settled in Tsawwassen where they lived for almost thirty years. Bud joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1940 as a Private and four years later fought in WWII. In 1944 Bud was a part of the Normandy D-Day invasion force, where his section lost almost half its men in a tank battle. During the battle, Bud was wounded when his trench received a direct hit from enemy fire - resulting in Bud spending two months in hospital in London. In recognition, he received the Legion of Honour Award from France for his service. He has represented Canada at many war anniversary and memorial local, national and international events. After his time in the Armed Forces, Bud served in the RCAF as a loadmaster on the immortal North Star airplanes. Following Bud’s service in the Army and Air Force, Bud went on to become a residential real estate broker and contractor in Richmond. And finally, Bud served as the bookkeeper and customs broker for Boutique Blanche for many years. Bud was a large part of both the Tsawwassen business community and the community at large. To know him was to love him. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

He passed away in Vancouver with his daughter Tamara, partner Kathy, brother John and sister Helen by his side. Colin was pre-deceased by his parents James and Helen, brothers Charles and Jim and his wife Jackie. He is survived by his daughters Sherrisse, Tamara and Heather, siblings Isobel, John, William, George and Helen, as well as his grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
