She’s hoping her successor will carry on the fight for the things that make Delta an incredible place to live, work and play. Speaking on behalf of the city as mayor for the final time at a Delta Chamber of Commerce annual general meeting, Lois Jackson on Wednesday reflected on the many changes the munic-

ipality has gone through since she was first elected to council in 1973, and having served as mayor for almost 20 years. The longtime civic politician, who’s not seeking re-election as mayor this fall, talked about the rapid growth during the 60’s and 70’s, the province’s profound introduction of the Agricultural Land Reserve which, in the longterm, helped maintain much of Delta’s important farmlands, traffic impacts from port expan-

Lois Jackson sion and the challenges Delta still faces, including the lobby

effort for the now stalled George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project. She also proudly reflected on many of the initiatives undertaken to improve Delta’s livability as well as assisting businesses, all the while working towards eliminating the municipal debt. “I hope my successor sees the value of continuing to protect and preserve the agricultural roots that have been planted here and pushes back against

land speculators…. I hope my successor builds upon Delta’s Climate Change Initiative by challenging staff and the community to find more ways to mitigate our environmental impact,” she told chamber members at the Delta Town & Country Inn. “I never envisioned that the Delta Shake and Shingle landfill site could be transformed into such productive industrial land.” JACKSON: see Page 3

Making the switch to cannabis CEO says it’s a big challenge to stay profitable growing greenhouse vegetables SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It’s an overwhelming challenge to stay profitable growing greenhouse vegetables, according to Village Farms International which is turning to a more profitable harvest. In an interview with the Optimist, founder Michael DeGiglio, who has served as CEO since the company’s inception in 1987, discussed some of the reasoning behind his company’s decision to begin converting its huge East Ladner greenhouse operation to cannabis production. “You look at this payroll tax they [the provincial government] will implement and then you look at things like the carbon tax, and then the payroll is going up, so it’s becoming very difficult, especially since you’re not just competing in Canada,” he explained. “The unique thing about cannabis,

Village Farms International is converting its East Ladner greenhouse operation to cannabis production. from a farmer perspective, as long as it’s legal, is that we’d be competing with only other cannabis growers in Canada. We’re not competing with NAFTA and four dollars per day labour in Mexico, where they don’t pay carbon tax or health tax. That’s the issue and it’s only getting worse.” Health Canada recently gave the go-ahead for Emerald Health

Therapeutics, a B.C.-based licensed producer of medical cannabis, to grow medical marijuana at the Village Farms greenhouse. The joint venture, called Pure Sunfarms, is planning to grow recreational cannabis when it’s legalized this summer. Conversion of the first 250,000 square foot section of the 1.1-millionsquare-foot Delta 3 is substantially complete and

is expected to commence production this April. Conversion of the remainder of the 1.1-million-square-feet is underway and the entire facility is expected to be in production in 2019. The joint venture holds options on two additional greenhouse spaces owned by Village Farms, called Delta 2 and Delta 1, with 1.1-million-square-feet and 2.6 million-squarefeet of growing capacity respectively. DeGigilio said they’ll be growing different strains on site depending on whether it’s for medical purposes or the recreational market, and product will be packaged on site as well. Any extracting of oils will also be done on-site, but when edibles are permitted they could be done elsewhere by other companies with Pure Sunfarms providing ingredients. “Pure Sunfarms, like Village Farms, is a vertically integrated company,

but time will tell where we go. Let’s see what happens with the legalization first and then what goes on from there,” said DeGigilio. He noted product will be ready for sale whenever the legalization date comes into effect this summer, adding that unlike tomatoes, which have a limited shelf life, cannabis crops can be stored for much longer. “In the end, the Canadian market might have no more than 12 or 15 customers if it’s all done through the government, like alcohol,” he added. Village Farms says that the launch of the joint venture is a transformational opportunity to grow “a substantially more profitable agricultural product.” Based on conservative market pricing forecasts and yield projections, conversion to cannabis production could generate revenue of 10 to 15 times that of its Canadian vegetable production.

Jackson hopes successor will fight for upgraded crossing CONTINUED from Page 1 “ I hope my successor spurs others to consider developments in the area….My vision also included the replacement of the George Massey Tunnel. Although this project sits at a standstill, I don’t think the battle is over. When you look back in time, as far back as William Ladner, you will see that this is a fight that has been passed on

and on, reeve after reeve and mayor after mayor. So I look to my successor to continue to fight, as we all have, for an upgraded crossing over the Fraser River.” Jackson said each reeve and mayor before her left a legacy and, when she reflects on what her legacy will be, she hopes Delta residents and business owners know that she did her utmost to uphold

Delta’s motto “Ours to Preserve By Hand in Heart.” “I want people to remember me as someone who always looked out for their community – someone who would raise their voice even when others wouldn’t, and someone who would fight to keep this community connected even as urban sprawl occurred around them,” she said.

Jackson also said, “I have often referred to Delta as small-town living with big city problems. We keep trying to protect what we have here in Delta but are continually facing external pressures to grow, expand and become something bigger.” Jackson also pointed out the outstanding work of senior city staff over the years including former CAO George Harvie, who’s

currently on vacation leave until his official retirement in May, a man whom she described as “a wonderful force” for the city. Also in the audience were councillors Sylvia Bishop, who recently announced her mayoralty bid in this October’s municipal election, and Robert Campbell, a former longtime Jackson ally who’s running on Bishop’s ticket.

Mall becoming crime destination: police Tsawwassen Mills general manager says picture being painted not as bad as it appears IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

The Tsawwassen Mills mall is fast becoming a destination for out of town crime seekers. That was the message brought forward by Delta police Supt. Harj Sidhu at the March Delta police board meeting. “The Mills mall is becoming a crime destination for people from the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver where they are actually targeting and getting onto busses and then coming into the community,” Sidhu said. “That continues to be an issue. But through our TFN service team working more closely

with mall management and merchants we will get a handle on this.” The DPD provided the Optimist with a look at the calls for service from the Mills from October 2017 to March 9. There were 18 files that resulted in shoplifting or theft charges. Three of the 18 charged were from Delta, while the others charged came from Vancouver, Surrey, Abbotsford and Langley. Also of note, in early January police were conducting foot patrols in the mall when they observed two prolific chronic shoplifters, known to police, who had allegedly come to the mall to shop and get

offers. Mills general manager Mark Fenwick, while not disputing the statistics, said the picture painted by

the police is not as bad as it appears. “We have hundreds of thousands of people visiting a month and if the Delta police have three or four incidents involving people from Vancouver, I don’t think you can say that is a trend,” said Fenwick. “To me you can draw the conclusion that Deltans are law-abiding citizens, but like any shopping centre or destination shop theft occurs occasionally and having people from Abbotsford, Vancouver or Surrey is no surprise because we draw customers regularly from all those areas.” Fenwick was quick to point out however, that the

mall is very pleased with the service they get from Delta police and that the recent addition of police resources, along with continued support from the merchants, has paid off in a decrease in the calls for service. “Delta police have been very good. Our security provider Paladin works well with them – they have a good relationship and they are making our shopping centre a safe place to shop,” added Fenwick. “The notion that our shuttle is being used as a way to get to the mall to commit crime I too believe was a very isolated incident and that is not a regular occurrence.”

Police and DSS staff determine rumoured threat was false Delta police and Delta Secondary staff determined that a rumoured social media threat was in fact false. On Wednesday, police and school officials began investigating the rumour. “The rumour arose as

a result of a disagreement between two students that continued over social media after a verbal altercation,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. Leykauf said police met with one of the involved

parties, and school board staff were involved with families of both students throughout Wednesday evening. Discussions between police and school administration continued to determine if there were

She said the supply of condos and townhouses is unable to meet demand. The benchmark price for single-family homes in Tsawwassen and Ladner stood at $1,249,300 and $1,003,900, respectively, both down slightly from January. Over the past year, prices have increased 8.5 per cent in Tsawwassen and 5.8 per cent in Ladner. Oudil said the detached home market in the region is beginning to enter buyers’ market territory.

According to the City of Delta’s Social Profile, single-family dwellings still make up about 80 per cent of the housing stock, while townhomes account for just under six per cent and apartments and condos make up around 14 per cent. The profile report notes increased prices and a shortage of available land for development in Delta present challenges for increasing the city’s housing availability. However, older units ready to be updated or replaced will offer opportunities.

Delta townhome and condo prices have experienced quite an upward trajectory over the past year. Figures from the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver for February show the benchmark price for a townhouse in Tsawwassen was $756,000 and in Ladner it was $783,200. While those prices were almost unchanged from January, over the past year the price in Tsawwassen increased 17.9 per cent, while Ladner experienced a 19.5 per cent rise. As far as condos, the benchmark price was $471,000 for Tsawwassen and $443,300 for Ladner, both of which saw a month-to-month increase of just under three per cent and just over 16 per cent for the last 12 months. “Rising interest rates and stricter mortgage requirements have reduced home buyers’

Delta looks for answers on Burrvilla bat colony IAN JACQUES

The City of Delta is seeking answers from Metro Vancouver regarding the future of a bat colony in one of Delta’s most important heritage landmarks. The regional district is conducting research on a colony of well over 2,400 bats that have taken up residency in Burrvilla in Deas Island Regional Park. Delta council has endorsed several recommendations asking Metro Vancouver to provide Delta with a report of the impacts of the maternity bat colony on the Burr House; the effectiveness of the mitigation measures being used to protect the building, including a review of best practices used in other jurisdictions for the protection of historic buildings that are home to bat colonies; and options for relocating the bat colony. The issue came to Delta’s attention following a Metro regional parks committee meeting and raised the ire of Mayor Lois Jackson. “I don’t think that’s what that beautiful house should be used for. I really think they should be cre-

ating another space and moving them,” said Jackson. A Metro committee report states the attic of Burrvilla is home to the largest known colony of its kind in B.C., providing an important habitat for Yuma bats and little brown bats. don’t worry about off-leash dogs, although sometimes I worry for them. When the conversation turns to dogs running off-leash in areas where that activity isn’t permitted, the usual complaint is that an unleashed dog has initiated an unwelcome encounter, either with a human or another animal. Those on the receiving end of these unwanted meetings have every right to be angry, particularly if this flouting of the rules results in injury to themselves or their animals. I’m not a fan of off-leash dogs approaching me when I’m out walking my dog because of my girl’s history. You see, she spent some portion of the first year of her life fending for herself on the North Coast. By the time the shelter was able to corral her, she was emaciated, missing pretty much all of her fur and had a litter of puppies in tow. She was also covered in scrapes and bruises, so my guess is she was involved in a few skirmishes up there and likely gave as good as she got. She’s much more frightened – of everything from the broom to the overhead fan to the laundry room – than aggressive, so when she encounters an off-leash dog that’s invading her space her first inclination is to run away, but given she’s on the end of a leash, that’s not possible. With flight not an option, fight becomes an alternative. Interactions with other dogs in the two years we’ve had her have been progressively getting better but at a solid 80 pounds and still exhibiting a tiny bit of unpredictability, I’m cautious for fear of what could possibly happen. That’s why I still get a lump in my throat when an off-leash dog comes bounding towards us, owner well behind and shouting, “Don’t worry, he’s friendly.” Friendly or not, if he gets too close or is too rambunctious, there’s a possibility this encounter can go south in a hurry. Nothing untoward usually happens, with the worst having been some growling and air bites, but the fact of the matter is the situation would never have arisen if the other dog had simply been on a leash – in an area where that’s the law. So even if your dog is friendly and well behaved, that doesn’t necessarily mean every other dog you encounter is also that way. Leash laws keep everyone safe, but they only work if all adhere to them.

Students also learning about the economic side of food

T

he official beginning of spring is not far off and I can hardly wait. If you were lucky enough to get out and about last weekend, you probably enjoyed yourself. Feeling actual heat from the sun was something special and I want to feel more of that soon. The milder weather has seen a lot of activity on the school farms in Delta and hundreds of kids have been busy mapping their seed choices and getting the seed in the ground. We have planted radish, kale, spinach, peas, beans and spuds and we just sowed some early carrots. At Farm Roots in Boundary Bay, the student farmers have been benefactors from the community again early in the year and have received manure from Jerry Keulen at Seaview Farms and seed potatoes from Jack Zellwegger. There are also some dynamic partnerships developing in the community that will see the Farm Roots kids working with four mentor/partner businesses so that the students will gain a better understanding of the economics and business aspects of the food economy. More on that as the partnerships evolve. As for the little guys, they are also learning a little bit about math and the economic side of food. We work on the equation

Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER

that presents itself when a $3 pack of seeds can yield a thousand carrots. The kids are told how much a bag of carrots costs in a grocery store and they do the math from there so they can convince mom and dad to grow a few things in the backyard or in containers to have fresh veggies on hand. They get this which is cool to witness. The kids are also taught the nutritional value of the food they grow and eat. Small scale farming is easier to maintain organically but large scale operations often use pesticides, chemical fertilizers and other agents designed to promote or stunt growth of a particular plant. And then there are GMO’s. Genetically modified organisms, have been designed over the years to protect against disease and increase yields.

“The potential benefits are foods that are tastier, more nutritious and resistant to diseases and droughts,” notes LiveScience. The pros and cons of GMO’s are hotly contested. A recent article form the Organic Consumers Association states that, “Approximately 85 percent of Americans do not consume the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s recommended intakes of the most important vitamins and minerals necessary for proper physical and mental development.” Opponents of GMO’s refer to them as ‘FrankenFoods’ yet in countries where growing food is difficult, GMO crops have helped to feed millions of people who would otherwise starve. The article also claims that, “Factory farmed GMO food is a public disaster” and is responsible for chronic disease, allergies and a host of other medical conditions that cost the health care system in the United States billions of dollars. Approximately 90 per cent of all canola, soy and corn in North America comes from genetically modified seed. I can only suggest that we hone in on nutrition and realize that the business of food and farming is ultimately complex and that there is no room for zealotry on either side of the equation.

Action on tunnel bottleneck is long, long overdue

Editor: In July of 1971 I moved to Tsawwassen, attracted by the relatively good housing market prices and the best weather on the Lower Mainland. The 35-kilometre commute from downtown was even 11 kilometres less than the commute to White Rock. And I reasoned that the George

Massey Tunnel would never become the neglected nightmare commuter bottleneck it has become. Not a commuter and need proof? On good days, the northbound rush ends around 10 a.m. On good days the southbound rush doesn’t start until around 2 p.m.Weekdays before the southbound counter flow lane kicks in around 3:15

the Hwy 99 line up begins at the Hwy 91 overpass. Amazing. Not good. So back to 1971: I reasoned the tunnel is a main southbound Greater Vancouver gateway to the ferries, the border and Roberts Bank. Going the other way for south of Fraser traffic, it is the gateway to the airport and downtown.

Boy was I was wrong – very wrong. I don’t care whether the solution is a new bridge or twinning the tunnel, just get on with it. If the solution is twinning the tunnel, the tunnel designers and builders should go to NYC and see how a tunnel should be built – lined with ceramic white tile that reflects light, tile that

can be easily hosed down to clean and tile that it is resistant to absorbing dirt and pollution. The current tunnel is a dark, dirty, cave-like passage that gets worse over time despite the attempted improvements. And if the solution ends up being a new tunnel, please upgrade the old tunnel to the features and

standards of the new tunnel. It would be a sin to leave the old one the way it is just to save money. In addition, the tunnel bottleneck is a big time economic cost that hits all commuters and trucking companies that are servicing Roberts Bank. Action is long, long overdue. Joe Suica

Stark off-leash claims trespass overtly on actual fact

Editor: Re: Dog owner says offleash ‘strays’ could end up at animal shelter, letter to the editor, March 7 The writer makes some very stark claims considering the width of brush he is painting with. His

claims (or lack thereof) trespass overtly on actual fact. How many off-leash dogs do you see, save the terrible occurrence he experienced? (That should never happen under any circumstance.) It’s a big, scary world

out there. You are twice as likely to die of a bee sting than suffer major injury due to a canine. Maybe the letter would have been more impactful if it was directed at the rampant, neglectful beekeepers. Dog and human safety

Exploring the Bitcoin phenomenon Editor: I was curious about the Bitcoin phenomenon. I found a Bitcoin vending machine in a cafe in Richmond and bought $5 worth of a Bitcoin. Later on I tried to sell it to get my money back but with no luck. It turns out you can buy Bitcoins in most countries but you cannot sell them in Canada. I would have to go the US to sell them until Canadian laws allow them to be sold. The Bitcoin mining

process attempts to solve a complex math problem which takes a long time to solve. Hence a lot of energy is consumed by computers all over the world. This mining process provides a 10-minute delay to ensure that there is no double spending of bitcoins. There are huge computer farms and hackers with black hats attempting to steal computer time from your computer i.e., cyberjacking, working on this math puzzle.

Window and Gutter Cleaning

(New expanded window cleaning service)

The first one that arrives at a solution is the only one allowed to add a Bitcoin and get paid for its mining effort. Everyone else has to start all over again. There has to be an alternate way that does not waste so much energy. The new hashgraph software to establish distributed consensus and quantum computers may help to speed up the process and make it more efficient and secure. Jim Ronback

is vitally important and dialogue is required, undoubtedly. But to have a cogent and productive discussion, data and clear thought is required, not incoherent ramblings. Furthermore, two open threats were uttered in

as many paragraphs. Unfortunately, dogs are considered property in B.C. If you steal my dog, that is theft. And if there will be a “footprint on my head,” “virtual” or otherwise, I would argue it’s not just my service dog who

Harsh assessment of Terminal 2 Federal agency outlines concerns over impacts to bird populations with potential port expansion SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

If it’s not a death blow, it’s going to be extremely difficult for the Port of Vancouver to counter. That’s how Against Port Expansion’s Roger Emsley described the apparent rebuke by Environment and Climate Change Canada of the port authority’s proposed Terminal 2 expansion. In a recent submission to a federal review panel gathering input on the application to build a second container terminal at Roberts Bank, the federal agency outlined a number of serious concerns regarding the impact to bird populations and disagreed with the port’s conclusion the project, with the implementation of proposed mitigation measures, would result in no residual effects to coastal birds other than for diving birds. The agency also outlined concerns with the proposed offset plan to mitigate the direct loss of wetlands, including

mudflats, noting most of the reliable evidence in the port’s environmental impact statement indicated the potential for large declines in food availability for shorebirds during the critical breeding migration period. “ECCC maintains that there is insufficient, science-based information to support the proponent’s finding that the project would not adversely impact intertidal biofilm and consequently, migratory shorebirds in general, and the western sandpiper species in particular,” the submission states. Emsley said T2’s potentially devastating consequences for the ecosystem, already raised by scientists, have been highlighted by the federal agency. “Remember that ultimately it is the minister of environment that has to determine if there are significant impacts that cannot be mitigated. Her own department has told her very clearly there are impacts and they cannot be mitigated,” he said, calling the agency’s

The port’s environmental impact statement states its assessment determined

the “project is expected to temporarily influence community composition of biofilm during freshet from terminal footprintrelated changes in salinity, but is expected to return to existing conditions outside of the annual freshet period.” The port added the assessment concluded there are no significant

adverse residual effects from the project to marine vegetation. In a statement, Cliff Stewart, the port’s vicepresident of infrastructure, said, “We welcome these important conversations with agencies and others and look forward, through the panel review process, to work together on the items that have been

raised. We are confident in the conclusions of the many years of scientific study done for the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project. We also have full confidence in the independent federal panel process to assess that science and make its recommendation.” During Delta council’s discussion this week on the city’s new Birds and Biodiversity Conservation Strategy it was noted T2 would be located in an area close to the critical mudflats. In a previous submission to the panel, the city warned if there is continued lack of consensus following the panel review process about the potential effects of the project on the environment, the panel is urged to err on the side of caution and recommend that application be denied. The city’s position also states that T2 should at least be postponed until there is greater consensus between scientific, regulatory and environmental agencies.

Phoenix pay system to be abolished IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

The beleaguered Phoenix pay system will eventually be abolished, but how long that will take is not known yet. In the recent federal budget announcement, Liberal Finance Minister Bill Morneau said the government intends to “eventually move away from Phoenix and explore a new process for the federal government’s pay system.” The budget allocated $16 million over the next two years to research a new pay system. That research has been tasked to MP Scott Bryson. Another $431 million was announced to stabilize the system, raising the bill to almost $900 million. Delta MP Carla Qualtrough, the minister of public services and procurement, has been tasked with fixing the system. “What that [$431 million] will cover is more people, better business practices, continued enhancements on the technology side,” Qualtrough said. “What

I’m looking for and my number one priority is remain laser focused on stabilizing this system. We have to pay 300,000 people every two weeks so we have to have a system in place that works.” In May 2012, Public Services and Procurement Canada began to centralize pay advisors for 46 departments and agencies in the new Public Service Pay Centre. It has created a nightmare where thousands of workers were not getting paid correctly. As for Delta-specific budget funding, she said there are areas where funds might be available. “I think there are a number of things and programs that I will be making sure the City of Delta is aware of,” she said. “For instance, the investment in the Pacific Autism Family Network you think of Reach, so let’s make sure they can get access to the $20 million that network is getting. If you look at the small craft harbor investment, because I think that is a way we can get our secondary dredging issues addressed.”

Delta firefighters pushed beyond ‘comfort zones’ Locals take part in intense four-day survival course IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Delta firefighters Pat O’Connell, Reid Martin and Hardeep Dhaliwal were recently put through their paces in four days of intense training. They were among 30 firefighters from across the province that took part in the International Association of Fire Fighters Fire Ground Survival Instructor Course. The course is designed to give firefighters the ability to return to their departments and teach colleagues the skills they need to rescue themselves should they get trapped or lost in a structure fire. Additionally, the course provides the skills needed for the incident commander to respond quickly and effectively in the event a firefighter becomes lost or trapped. The course was taught by six master instructors from various fire departments across North America. “We were very lucky

to have these instructors who were excellent in their delivery and extremely knowledgeable,” said Martin, a lieutenant with 22 years of service with the Delta Fire Department. “On the first day they are very clear that this course would challenge our skills and push us beyond our comfort zones. They were right.” Martin said when a firefighter in a structure fire or at any emergency call initiates a distress call it is important everyone on the ground, including that firefighter, knows their roles. “When a mayday call is made, time is ticking and every second counts,” he said. “The firefighter in distress needs to stay calm as does the incident commander. Discipline is required by everyone on scene and it is important to follow correct steps to provide the best chance of survival for that firefighter.” Following a day of theory, firefighters were put through two days of practical training before a final

day of testing. “In each of the practical training stations we were taught specific techniques on how to use our personal protective gear and specific techniques on how to escape from hostile environments in working structure fires,” said Martin. “Each training station that was created was because of real world situations that resulted in firefighter line of duty deaths. It is our hopes to bring this

training back to all our members in order to help prevent any further of these deaths or injuries as a result of being trapped or lost in a structure fire.” SUBMITTED PHOTO

manager Tricia Forrester, noting an AED was used by staff a few months ago at Sungod Recreation Centre to help save a life. Delta has 15 AEDs at its facilities with a device to be installed at Harris Barn in Ladner, she added. The city began phasing in the devices about a decade ago and they’ve been put into use about 10 times, she noted. Staff are trained to use AEDs but all of the devices are accessible to the public, Forrester explained. “They’re not hidden away where only staff can access them.” Heart and Stroke Foundation volunteer Laurie Maitland noted AEDs are also in other locations in the community in addition to civic facilities. Last year staff at the Tsawwassen White Spot used an AED to help save a man who had gone into medical distress.

AEDs are small devices designed to be easy to use. They provide voice activated instructions that guide users through the process. It monitors for any heartbeat and tells you when to start CPR and when it will administer an electric shock to the heart to victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Approximately 40,000 cardiac arrests happen in Canada annually and can strike without warning, affecting people of all ages and all degrees of fitness, according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. “When cardiac arrest happens, every minute counts. If delivered in the first few minutes of a cardiac arrest, defibrillation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can double survival rates. But with each passing minute, the probability of survival decreases by 7 to 10 per cent,” states the organization’s website.

Hockey team helps hospital

The Ladner Zephyrs have continued their tradition of giving back to the Delta Hospital. Recently members of the team presented the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation with a cheque for more than $4,250, which broke last year’s fundraising effort of $3,000. Since the Zephyrs began their charity Christmas hockey tournament five years ago, they have raised $13,000 for the hospital.

“Christmas is a time of giving, and a time to give back to this community we love,” said fundraising organizer Chad Taylor. This year, a fundraiser after-party at The Landing Pub & Grill added to the charitable proceeds. “It’s great to see their hard work pay off,” adds Shari Barr, annual giving manager. “They have made this a wonderful annual event that makes such a difference for community members who depend on critical care

services close to home.” Throughout the year, Delta community members hold many events to help raise funds for the hospital and the Community Health Foundation. “While these events vary, they all have a common thread – they take place because the organizers value the vital role Delta Hospital plays in the community,” said hospital and Community Health Foundation executive director Lisa Hoglund.

Four Winds co-owner Adam Mills with staff Seamus Munns and Justin Longoz presented a cheque for more than $14,000 to Reach development manager Kristin Bibbs in front of Harris Barn Tuesday afternoon. The Cheers for Children fundraiser held Feb. 3, was extremely successful. Mills and team brought together fellow brewing companies as well as provided Four Winds beers, tacos and staff time at the event to donate this sizable sum to Reach Society’s Building for Children Together project that has made the new Reach Centre for Children in Ladner possible. “The great thing about the nature of this event is that, in addition to the incredible funds raised, we raised awareness of Reach amongst our community’s current and future young parents and families,” said Bibbs. “We cannot thank the Mills and Four Winds

Representatives from Four Winds and Reach raised awareness of the help available to children with

special needs thoughout the evening to a demographic that included many young parents. “What an amazing night. A great example of the community coming together to support such a worthy cause. I was blown away with the talent of the local acts as well as the generosity of those in attendance,” said Mills. “Working with Reach was a pleasure and we look forward to doing it again next year.”

It has been close to a week since Daylight Savings Time started up again for this year. Hopefully by now, the alarm no longer feels like it’s going off in the middle of the night. For those of us who go to church, and especially those who have to be there early, we really feel that first morning. Kids are sleepy. Parents are sleepy. Pastors are sleepy – as are those who listen to them. Every year, especially when we “spring forward,” there is debate about whether we should stop doing this to ourselves. But whether we like the time change or not, most of us appreciate the extra hour of daylight. However, that brings up a deeper question about how we use that

Minister’s Minute

extra hour. For part of our life, time seems like an endless renewable resource. No matter how you used the last 1,440 minutes, there’s another batch waiting for you when you wake up. Then at some point, reality hits that the supply of time isn’t inexhaustible, and

that a disturbing amount of it has already slipped through our fingers. Moses is known for an astonishing list of accomplishments. Interestingly, they all happened in the last third of his life. Sometime during that period, he wrote: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom (Psalm 90:12).” In other words, help us recognize that life is short and that we need to use our time wisely. So how are you going to use that extra hour – to help people, to make our community better, to get healthy, to grow personally, to get to know God better, and to prepare for eternity? That extra hour of daylight is great. Let’s use it well.

sawwassen artist Yorke Graham knows how to breathe new life into

objects. From typewriters to scissors to wrenches Graham takes used and/or discarded items and turns them into pieces of metal art. He got started about five years ago. “I was walking on the beach with my dog and I found an old water tank someone had thrown in the water. It had been there a while. I dragged it home and made a fish [out of it],” he says. A collection of his work is now on display at Kimoto Gallery in Vancouver until March 24. The show, titled Revisioned, includes over 20 pieces of artwork. “Yorke’s passion to explore the new possibilities of the antiquated materials he uses, ignites his ability to mold, weld and weave each creation with a new identity,” the gallery’s website states. Graham, a former technician for Delta Cable, gathers his material from sources like VarageSale, a swap meet in Vancouver, the odd garage sale and even a scrapyard. Most of the time he’ll have an idea for a piece then acquire the items he needs to create it. Usually

From Cuba With Love concert at Genesis Genesis Theatre will be the place to be for Latin and Cuban music fans next Friday. The Ladner venue will play host to a show titled From Cuba With Love with Spanish singer Jafelin and her award-winning friends Rosel Lamoru, Julio Avila, Leonardo Dominguez, members of the Cuban band Brisas del Palmar, and Cuban pianist Antonio Delgado with Latin percussionist Juan David Encinales. The group took part in an international tour in 2015 which included a

performance at the Chan Centre in Vancouver. Jafelin was born in Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela, a country where Spanish influence is ever-present. Oddly enough, Jafelin’s lifelong interest in Flamenco only bloomed upon her coming to Canada in 1996. Her particular talent as Cantaora (singer) didn’t go unnoticed, and it wasn’t long before Jafelin became a regular in flamenco circles. She has been working as a professional singer now for over 15 years. She has

worked and performed with many Spanish artists across Canada and internationally. Today, Jafelin is one of Canada’s preeminent Flamenco and Latin singers with many Spanish genres in her repertoire. Brisas del Palmar was formed in 1999 at Santiago, Cuba, by brothers Rosel and Yordanis Lamoru. What makes the band unique is their ability to arrange and perform as well as to harmonize their four voices to produce a sound that is captivating to all audiences. Brisas del Palmar is known in Cuba

as one of the leading bands of traditional music. From Cuba With Love takes place at Genesis Theatre, 500545th Ave., Ladner on Friday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. Expand your creativity by creating a mandala An Art-full Life

MEG & MARY ANN

A mandala literally means “circle.” It is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the universe. The basic form of most mandalas is a square with four gates containing a circle with a centre point. Traditionally each gate is in the general shape of the letter T. Mandalas often exhibit radial balance, but not always. A circle can mean wholeness, reminding us of our relationship to infinity and extending beyond our bodies and mind. The circle appears in so many aspects of life, the earth, the sun, the moon and also circles such as the circle of a fam-

ily, friendships and communities, and the circle of the world. Mandalas are often created by individuals to symbolize what they are feeling at the moment or they tell a story of their journey or path through life. Mandalas are often used as a form of meditation. The intention behind creating a mandala is to become pulled in to your work as a form of meditation, absorbed by its essence, its meaning and its beauty. It is a journey on its own where by the simple act of creating it becomes a special form of meditation, with a purpose within itself. You may even find you will feel more at peace, happier and more fulfilled. How to create your own personal mandala: 1. Start with an intention. I want to manifest a more peaceful life, a more loving relationship, friendships. 2. Focus on your intention during the creating of your personal mandala. You will need :

Mandalas are often used as a form of meditation. * A pencil, a fine tipped pen (coloured pencils if you want to add colour after) * Drawing surface * A ruler * Circular objects that you can trace 3. Your imagination – anything goes. Step 1 - Draw a circle on

your paper; this will be the size of your mandala. You can trace around an object such as a plate, a roll of packing tape or the rim of a drinking glass. If you’re up to the challenge, you can also draw it freehand. Step 2 - Draw one line horizontally in the centre of your circle, then another

vertically, so that you have four equal quadrants in the circle. Step 3 - Start by drawing a small circle in the centre of your large circle. Step 4 - Create organic shapes (we used a flower petal shape here) coming out of each of the four quadrants from the small circle. Step 5 Working from the “negative” spaces in your current design, draw additional shapes. These can be a new shape or the same shapes you initially drew at a different height. Step 6 - From here, you will basically continue this process — building your way out from the central image, maintaining a consistent and symmetrical design. We find that making additional sec-

tors as you work out helps you create evenly spaced imagery. Step 7 - Continue adding shapes until you run out of space in your circle. Or, if you decide that you want to go bigger, simply expand the circle and keep going. You may find that it’s addictive and you’re not ready to stop. There are hundreds of designs that you can use to enhance your mandala so search images online for mandala design elements. Mandalas are something that others can instantly identify with and a symbol that can really help you to feel truly connected to your world. We really hope you try this and that you will find that creating your own mandala is like a sacred journey that will help you to truly connect to your world. Living in Delta serves as theme for art show Exhibit at Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen runs until April 1 LAUREL JOHNSON

Optimist contributor

The experience of living in Delta is the theme this month at Gallery 1710, home of the South Delta Artists’ Guild. Our challenge, proffered by the Rotary Club of South Delta, was to paint pictures of local landmarks for their 2019 calendar. The chosen 12 paintings were revealed last Thursday evening at the show opening. Landmarks can be any iconic feature of Delta. Centennial Beach, one of Heather Boyle’s pictures, features children digging in the sand under a colorful umbrella, while Francine Alford painted her favorite walk. Nancy Dean chose golf as her theme – sure to appeal to many who consider a walk incomplete without the swing of a club. Anita de Vos, whose quirky folk art has charmed many, got the nod for two pictures – one of Westham Island, and another called Saints Alive. The calendar wants pictures

for all seasons, and Gloria Malaka’s snow scene was an instant hit with viewers. Gordon Richards captured Ladner architecture for his rendition of the Warfinger Office, but didn’t forget that our farm community presents many rural scenes. His Westham Island Farm is a charmer, and Jan Strehler’s Herb Farm will not be forgotten. Who could leave out the Reifel Bird Sanctuary? Catherine Sheppard’s lovely pastels lend themselves to the depiction of softly feathered creatures, which we know and recognize. Her Feathered Tapestry is correct in every detail, the feathers seem close enough to stroke. One quiet picture, done by Jenny Hards shows her love of print making, and her humour: three cranes in the background drawn in ink are eclipsed by three herons in the foreground. Cranes and cranes! Many of these treasured scenes are disappearing from our community. Ann Hilton, who chose to

paint the building on the east side of the Massey Tunnel, and titled it White Spot Grows Potatoes in Ladner, was at the Thursday opening. When she went through the tunnel, she noticed that the structure had been torn down. Kathy Swift also captured the past with a picture of an old cannery called Gone But Not Forgotten. We need to document our heritage and treasure it as the ever present encroachment of humanity means change. Through our art, scenic spots, and old buildings will be preserved; a historical record. Be sure to visit the gallery on 56th street, right beside the South Delta Recreation Centre in Tsawwassen between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Thursday to Sunday. There were 70 entries in the show, which closes April 1. PHOTO BY CATHERINE SHEPHARD

Ambassadors Toastmasters enjoy successful pub night The Ambassadors Tsawwassen Mills Toastmasters recently hosted a successful pub night at the Rose and Crown Pub in Tsawwassen. It was the club’s third pub night in as many years and was well attended with 18 guests and 15 regular members present. Club president Tim Ernst started off the evening by getting all the attendees to stand up and share their worst advice ever. Publicity VP and grammarian for the evening Karen Taipalus encouraged everyone to use the word “cavalier” during speeches. Guest Patrick Morrissey managed to use it three times. The speech portion of the evening saw new member Mary Roncarelli deliver her “ice breaker” speech. She shared with the audience the interesting points of being only one of seven Roncarellis in North America. The club’s membership VP Greg Smith explained that he joined the Ambassadors Tsawwassen Mills Toastmasters to improve his public speaking skills. Libby Cooper, a longterm member who is moving to Victoria, received member recognition from Ernst for her contributions to the club. The second half of the evening also showed the

guests how Table Topics (impromptu speeches) are run. The Ambassadors meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. in the training room at Tsawwassen Mills. For further information, contact karentaipalus@gmail.com. SUBMITTED PHOTO

– Tsawwassen’s Home for Functional Training The days of machines and isolated workouts are a thing of the past. Functional training and using compound exercises is the best way to build strength, power, stability and mobility that is needed to thrive in your sport and life outside of the gym. At Tactix Gym, we focus on “movements” rather than “muscles”. Human movement doesn’t recruit single muscle-groups and certainly isn’t limited to one plane of motion, so why train that way? Our CrossFit, Tactix Conditioning and Kickboxing Programs offer exactly that: fullbody functional training. Our certified trainers can help you get moving towards a stronger and healthier life!

Our Body Transformation Challenge (BTC) is a boot-camp style workout designed for everyone from first-time exercisers, to seasoned gym goers. Looking to start your fitness journey, or get ready for the beach season? With the BTC you get 3 high-intensity classes per week, which can be scaled to your fitness level, making sure you stay safe and lose weight in a sustainable way. Not sure you can commit to 12 weeks? Canadians taking aim at upset 6th place Major Midget team takes on 3rd place Fraser Valley in quarter-finals MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Parity was the theme for much of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League’s regular season and that trend should continue with some intriguing quarter-final playoff match-ups this weekend. The Greater Vancouver Canadians finished sixth in the 11-team circuit and will be up against the third place Fraser Valley Thunderbirds in a best-of-three series starting Friday night. Just 10 points separated the teams in the final standings and they split four meetings — with each sweeping a series. The Canadians settled for a 19-17-3-1 record after splitting their final three series, including games with the fifth place Vancouver Northwest Giants (20-16-2-2) to close out their schedule two weekends ago. The much-improved Thompson Blazers took three of four points from Greater Vancouver back on Feb. 24-25 at the Richmond Olympic Oval. The Kamloops based team finished up in seventh place and is headed to the post-season for the first time in 12 years. The Canadians were one win from their first-ever league championship a season ago, dropping a deciding game heartbreaker to the Cariboo Cougars. The majority of that roster has moved onto the Western Hockey League or B.C. Hockey League. Head coach Phil Alalouf was confident his re-shaped team could still compete at a high level. Danny Pearson (49 points), Marcus Pantazis (423) and Garrett Wicks (41) are part of a more balanced attack up front, while Hayden Hurst (31) is among the top scoring defenseman in the league. “There are no superstars standing out

The Greater Vancouver Canadians will face Fraser Valley in a best-of-three series. but between the top guy and our 12th forward, there isn’t a huge difference. We have two pretty productive lines with (Tyler) Horstmann, Wicks and (Joshua) Harrison, along with Pearson, Pantazis, (Radek) Hewson

or (Michael) Tersigni,” saidl Alalouf. “We were down 3-0 five minutes into our game against North Island (on Feb. 18) and ended up winning 5-3 so they have the ability to score in bunches.”

Ice Hawks host Flames Sunday to open PJHL finals

MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Delta Ice Hawks will take aim at their fourth Pacific Junior Hockey League title in franchise history when they face the Ridge Meadows Flames, beginning Sunday night at the Ladner Leisure Centre. Thanks to owning the league’s best regular season record, the Hawks enjoy home ice advantage in the best-of-seven affair. Game two is also in Ladner on Tuesday with both contests starting at 7:30 p.m. The teams then head to Planet Ice in Maple Ridge next weekend for games three and four. Delta returns to the final for the second straight year after falling to the Aldergrove Kodiaks in six games. The Flames will be playing for their first championship in 20 years when they ironically defeated the Ice Hawks to spoil a terrific expansion season.

The teams have taken different paths to reach the championship series. Delta has relied on strong defensive play and stellar goaltending from Jordan Naylor to win eight of nine games, sweeping Grandview, then needing five to take care of cross-river Richmond Sockeyes. The Hawks surrendered just seven goals against the Sockeyes and, remarkably, have yet to be scored on in the third period during the post-season. However, the team has been challenged offensively of late, managing just 12 goals against Richmond with several key forwards having a quiet post-season run to date. That will have to change according to head coach Steve Robinson and it starts away from the opposition’s net. He notes how his team has only drawn 24 power plays so far in the playoffs. The Flames come into the finals with 42. “At the end of the day, as a puck skating and

possession team, our power play/penalty kill ratio is not where it needs to be,” explained Robinson. “It tells me our transition game between the neutral zones is not as good as I would like it to be right now. Part of that is preaching the defence so much and the guys making sure they are on the right side all the time.” The Flames averaged five goals per contest in their five game semi-final series win over Abbotsford. Veteran sniper Andrew Strelezki leads all playoff scorers with 17 points in 10 games. Three of his teammates are also among the top five in the league. The Ice Hawks won all four regular season meetings between the teams on their way to a franchise best 37-4-0-3 record. Both victories in Maple Ridge were tight 4-3 and 2-1 scores. Back-up goaltender Jordy Engleson was in net for three of the four games.

Sharon passed away peacefully on March 2, 2018, surrounded by family. Sharon is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, John, daughters Sarah (1979) and Tracey (1980), and countless family and friends. Sharon was born on August 3, 1955, in Collingwood, ON to parents Stanley and Isabelle. The eldest of four children, Sharon moved with her family in 1968 to Richmond, BC, where she later met and married her high school sweetheart and raised her family. Sharon was a devoted wife and mother who always put the needs of others before her own. Although small in stature, Sharon had a huge heart and a fiery spirit. She never hesitated to open her home to others and it was not uncommon to see a full house on Boxing Day and a full table during the holidays. Sharon loved to travel and spent her later years enjoying sun-filled cruises and trips to Mexico. Although she would never admit it, Sharon had a competitive streak, which friends and family witnessed when she was on the golf course or at home playing cards or trivia games. Sharon was deeply loved and will be missed. “Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.” In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sharon’s name to the BC Lung Association. The family would also like to encourage individuals to register as Organ Donors with the BC Transplant Society. HEALTH CARE ASSISTANT

You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence at the family’s online obituary at www.myalternatives.ca.

EATON, Alice Katz 1921 ~ 2018 Alice was born in Romania. She stepped peacefully into eternity this February in her home in Tsawwassen. Alice emigrated to Canada in 1934.

Alice was a remarkable woman. She began work with Imperial Oil in the 1960’s and was one of the first women supervisors with the company. Alice married Bruce Eaton in December 1973. They were both supervisors and travelled extensively with Imperial Oil. They often worked on the same jobs in the high Arctic or off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. Alice was sent into work environments that had previously been out of bounds to women. She set the precedent for allowing women employees into frontier work areas. Alice took in her fourteen year-old niece Rena and raised her as a daughter. Rena found Alice to be a kind, generous, courageous, loving and feisty woman. Bruce and Alice retired from Imperial Oil in 1982. Alice and Bruce bought a beautiful half acre property in Tsawwassen and used their retirement years to garden. Alice and Bruce traveled extensively. They made three trips to Tahiti, two trips to New Zealand, a motor trip across Canada and back through the USA, a trip to Europe and went on several cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska and the Mediterranean. Alice was very creative. She bought a spinning wheel in New Zealand and used it to spin her own wool. She loved to collect paintings and other interesting souvenirs of her travels. Alice was Bruce’s primary caregiver for ten years after he had a stroke. She looked after him with love and compassion. Bruce predeceased Alice on January 24, 2014. Alice is survived by Bruce’s children Bob Eaton, his wife Sue and his children Brian and Cindy and grandchildren; Barb Nielsen, her husband Hardy, their children Wanda, Trevor and Tracie and their children; and by her daughter Rena Groot, her John, and their children, Sarah, Shalev Alice, Shane M. Bruce, and Savannah. There will be a Celebration of Life for Alice on Friday, April 27th at 2:00 pm at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Rd., Delta, BC. Special thanks to the caregivers from West Coast Care who looked after Alice with such loving care, to Peter Silin from eldercare@diamondgeriatrics.com for your compassionate care for Alice, to Lois Yonash from the RBC Royal Trust for faithfully managing Alice’s affairs, and to Tom and Susan Coutts for being Alice’s dear friends and health advocates.
