Punch costs player $34,000 Altercation at Tsawwassen house party ends up in small claims court IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

A professional hockey player from Delta has been ordered to pay more than $34,000 in damages for his role in an assault outside a Tsawwassen house party last July. According to provincial small claims court judgement rendered March 15 in Richmond, Ryan Olsen, a former draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets, assaulted Liam Griffin when Griffin and his friend tried to stop Olsen from pushing a girl at the party.

According to the decision, Griffin, who was 19 at the time, attended the July 16 party with a friend. Olsen, who was 23 at the time, was also at the party. Griffin knew Olsen’s younger siblings, but had never met or spoken to Olsen. In his decision, Judge Thomas Gove wrote that after Griffin and his friend tried to get Olsen to stop pushing the girl, Olsen punched Griffin on the left cheek. Griffin fell unconscious and when he hit the ground his head struck concrete. Olsen then

knocked Griffin’s friend to the ground before leaving. Griffin was taken to Delta Hospital where he regained consciousness the next day and was discharged. Delta police investigated the assault. Olsen was released on an undertaking, but no criminal charges were laid by Crown. A notice of claim was filed in civil court and Olsen filed a reply claiming self-defence. A settlement conference was set, but Olsen did not attend. Another settlement conference was set for Feb.

5, but Olsen once again did not attend. The judge granted a default judgement setting a trial for March 12 to hear evidence on quantum of damages. According to medical records, Griffin sustained a concussion, a contusion and frontal lobe injury to his right forehead requiring stitches, a cut to his left check requiring stitches, scrapes to his elbow and back, and a neck injury. Gove assessed the pain and out-of-pocket expenses at a little over $24,000, but awarded $10,000 in punitive damages, which

the judge said was necessary to satisfy the interests of justice and denounce the conduct. “Griffin’s conduct prior to the assault in speaking up for the young female was the prosocial conduct of a 19-year-old Good Samaritan,” wrote Gove. “Olsen’s response was criminal and deserving of punishment.” Olsen, who was drafted 160th overall by the Jets in 2012, did not play a regular season game for Winnipeg. He is now playing for the Colorado Eagles of the ECHL.

Wrong way driver on Highway 99 dies in hospital IAN JACQUES

The man who caused a three-vehicle crash by driving the wrong way on Highway 99 last Sunday afternoon has succumbed to his injuries. The BC Coroners Service confirmed the 26-year-old from Vancouver, who drove a Volkswagen Golf southbound in the northbound lanes, died in hospital. “We are in the early stages of our investigation into his death,” said BC Coroners Service spokesperson Andy Watson. “Due to the privacy of the deceased per the Coroners Act and privacy legislation, we will not be releasing or confirming identity.” Just before 4:30 p.m. Sunday, RCMP Deas Island Traffic Services received numerous 911

On Monday, RCMP confirmed the driver of the Volkswagen, after exiting the George Massey Tunnel, crashed through the barriers in the counterflow lane and veered

into oncoming traffic. RCMP say they have not determined yet what might have prompted the driver to crash through the barriers. “We have several theories, but they are just that, theories, as we continue our investigation,” said

Sgt. Lorne Lecker. “In this case we may never know exactly what happened.” Several videos of the incident flooded social media Tuesday morning that showed the Volkswagen going the wrong way at a high rate of speed, narrowly missing

vehicles that swerved to get out of the way. Moments later, witnesses reported the Volkswagen collided headon with a northbound Toyota Rav 4 just south of the Highway 17 overpass. Lecker said a passenger in the Toyota, a 19-yearold female, has been moved out of intensive care, but remains in hospital, while the driver, a 48-year-old from Surrey, suffered unknown injuries. The driver and passenger of a Honda Pilot involved in the collision suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Lecker said investigators have interviewed family members of the deceased driver and plan to interview them further. The northbound lanes of Highway 99 were closed for a number of hours following the crash.

Manslaughter case delayed IAN JACQUES i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

A South Delta manslaughter case has been adjourned for three weeks to allow the defence more time to review evidence. Franco Douglas Sarra, 20, a graduate of South Delta Secondary who is now residing in Burnaby, did not appear in a Surrey courtroom yesterday morning. His legal counsel, Garen Arnet-Zargarian, asked the court for more time to review disclosure in the case. “I’m currently in the process of reviewing the more than 1,500 pages of information as well there are 30 hours of video,” Arnet-Zargarian told the court. “I would ask that we adjourn until April 19 so we can continue the process.” Crown counsel David Simpkin agreed to the terms. Sarra is facing a manslaughter charge in connection with the death of Russ Armfelt, 53, outside the Rose and Crown Pub in Tsawwassen in December 2016. Previously, Delta police said Armfelt was located unconscious and unresponsive early in the morning of Dec. 11, 2016 outside the rear of the 56th Street pub. Despite efforts by paramedics to revive him, he later died in hospital.

Delta MP Carla Qualtrough received the Century of Change Award from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) at a gala event in Ottawa last week. Joined by special guests and supporters, CNIB commemorated a century of remarkable change and progress for Canadians who are blind or partially sighted and ushered in a bright future at its 100th anniversary national celebration. Qualtrough was among the guest speakers. She spoke of her own experience living with partial sight and the impact CNIB has had on her life from a young age. “I am extremely honoured to have received this award,” Qualtrough said. “The CNIB has been such a big part of my life, and has always been there to support my family. Hospital isn’t part of waiting list initiative

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist. com

Delta Hospital won’t be part of a new provincial initiative aimed at cutting down surgical wait times. Premier John Horgan last week announced the province will address long waiting lists for hip and knee replacements, allowing an extra 4,000 people to have the surgeries in the coming year. The investments will total $175 million over the next two years with ongoing targeted funding in following years. Although Delta Hospital has become a hub for day surgeries, Fraser Health notes it doesn’t provide hip and knee procedures. The procedures done at the hospital include ear/nose/throat, gynecology, dental, urology, plastic, orthopedic and general surgeries such as gall bladder removal. Last year the hospital handled 5,421 procedures, according to Fraser Health, a number that doesn’t include proce-

dures such as colonoscopies. Meanwhile, from April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017, the hospital had over 2,000 visits to its cardiology department, 46,248 medical imaging exams, over a half-million lab tests as well as 32,897 visits to the emergency department. Last fall hospital officials put shovels in the ground to celebrate the start of construction of the $15.2-million Peter C. and Elizabeth Toigo Diagnostic Services Building, which will double the size of the hospital’s diagnostic services area. It will enable the hospital to undertake 55,700 procedures annually, up from the current 42,900. Lab medicine on the second level will enable units processed to increase from 1.2 million to 1.7 million. Scheduled for occupancy by October 2019, the new diagnostic services building is the first phase of the hospital’s master plan that sets a vision for the next couple of decades.

Metro board OKs retirement allowance Mixed reaction to program that would see one-time payment to directors who leave board IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Metro Vancouver board members voted in favour of a retirement allowance last Friday despite some questioning the move with an election in October. According to Metro Vancouver, the one-time retirement allowance works out to $1,100 per director per year of service for those who choose to leave the board or are not re-elected. It is retroactive to 2007. “This is not a raise or a bonus,” said Metro spokesperson Don Bradley. “Most of these elected officials serving as board directors don’t currently have a pension or a retirement benefit in this capac-

ity. It is inconsistent with other levels of government, including MLAs, MPs and select municipalities both within Metro and across Canada.” The board also voted to increase pay for directors by 15 per cent to offset changes in the recent federal budget that would see some of the compensation civic politicians receive become taxable income. The move is intended to keep take-home pay at the same level. According to a Metro Vancouver staff report, a number of municipalities have reviewed the federal taxation changes and made adjustments to their remuneration bylaws to offset the income tax effect. The staff report

also points out that at the provincial and federal level, MLAs and MPs have employment benefits that include a pension, while most local governments don’t include anything. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) has expressed dismay over the decision, especially this close to the Oct. 20 election. “This is a slap in the face to taxpayers and voters in the Metro Vancouver region,” said Kris Sims, B.C. director of the CTF. “For these mayors and councillors to vote themselves a pay raise and a retirement bonus at a time when many won’t be running for re-election and facing the voters this fall is both unaccountable and

Brent Asmundson. But board vicechair Vancouver Coun. Raymond Louie said it is important to attract and retain quality people and part of that retention is ensuring people are appropriately compensated.

Mayor not keen on tax hike to finance affordable housing SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Affordable housing is undoubtedly a big issue but imposing a new tax on every household in the region to pay for projects might not be the best way to go, says Mayor Lois Jackson. Last summer the Metro Vancouver board voted down a recommendation by district staff to raise $1 million through a new household tax for the Metro Vancouver Housing Corporation, which owns and operates 49 housing sites that provide 3,400 units of affordable rental housing for low to moderate income households across the region. The board was asked to

consider a new regional tax, which reportedly would have worked out to just $1 per household, to help fund the redevelopment of two existing low-income rental complexes along with initiatives to develop affordable housing on vacant Metro Vancouver land and potentially other sites. A regional staff report notes that in order to increase the region’s housing stock through either development or redevelopment, an alternative source of funding is needed. “While financial support will continue to be sought from both the provincial and federal governments, it is likely that any financial support received

Metro Vancouver staff were hoping the region would impose a new household tax to help pay for projects such as the reconstruction of the publicly-owned Heather Place rental property in Vancouver. would be under a partnership arrangement, with required capital contributions from both the other level of government and MVHC,” the report states. Jackson said she’s not

sure imposing a household tax, which could become an ongoing item on the regional portion of the property tax bill, is the right move, noting the federal and provincial

governments don’t seem to have as many incentives for developers to fulfill current needs. “I’m not sure tax at the local level is the answer. I think it’s a bigger overall

problem that the province and federal government will have to look at, either in terms of rental subsidies or tax breaks for those who are building rental housing,” she said.

t’s been on the back burner for years, but the Metro Vancouver board decided to wade into the issue of pensions for civic politicians in a rather ham-handed way last week. I guess I shouldn’t refer to it as a pension given what was approved is a one-time retirement allowance, but this effort to provide some sort of golden handshake isn’t likely to accomplish what it set out to do. There are two factors — politicians at senior levels receive a pension and the notion that it’s difficult to attract good people without adequate compensation — that are driving this bus, although neither issue was really addressed by last week’s move. Municipal politics is different from senior levels in that most serve in a part-time capacity so there just isn’t a need to provide a pension when the vast majority of elected officials carry on with their own careers. That’s not the case with a full-time mayor, so I could see doing something there, although nothing is happening on that front. As for offering adequate compensation to attract qualified candidates, this allowance doesn’t cut it. It’s a nice parting gift to be sure, but if the rationale is to sweeten the pot to lure the best and brightest to civic politics, a onetime payment in the neighbourhood of $10,000 upon departure isn’t going to make much of a difference. All it really does is give a bunch of politicians who are calling it quits this fall a nice going away present. *** I was saddened to hear of the passing of Shirley Burr who loved this community dearly and did much to make it a better place. I got to know Shirley almost immediately after arriving at the Optimist because wherever you went in South Delta during the 1980s, she was there. It didn’t matter whether it was a Ladner Business Association luncheon, a Social Credit fundraiser, a Delta Chamber of Commerce gathering, a Ladner Pioneers game or a B.C. Summer Games meeting, you were almost certain to run into Shirley. I fondly remember her wry smile and the way she would good-naturedly roll her eyes as she valiantly tried to keep things on track each week at LBA meetings. Delta’s going to miss you, Shirley.

Canadians deserve the right to a livable environment

C

anada has always been a little late to the legislative party. After all, we did not become a fully sovereign nation until 1982. That same year, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms enshrined in law the principles of fair treatment that ought to be extended to all people. That document is the philosophical underpinning of our national identity and it is a clear statement that the basic necessities of life and wellbeing should not be subject to the political agenda of the day. I recognize that I am privileged to never have lived in a time without gender equity or racial nondiscrimination, topics of contention in today’s society. I have benefited from the fundamental democratic rights of a person born on Canadian soil. However, of all the privileges we take for granted, none are as delicate or as unprotected as our access to a healthy environment. Despite 93 per cent of UN member nations recognizing livable natural conditions as a constitutional right, environmental considerations are conspicuously absent from our Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This is not an entirely new issue either. Over 100 years ago, Prime Minister Wilfred Laurier’s 1912 Commission on Conservation raised concerns that constitutional uncertainty about environmental protection was preventing

Community Comment NICHOLAS WONG

the government from addressing water pollution… and this was before global warming and oil spills became regular headlines. While this may seem like a semantic argument, the lack of constitutional support for conservation efforts has left Canadians at the mercy of patchwork environmental laws, weak regulatory standards and toothless government agencies. This has had a profound impact even locally. Last year, eight species of Fraser River salmon were deemed to be endangered by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife In Canada. In terrible taste, the federal government has managed to protect commercial interests by not listing the salmon under the Species at Risk Act. They do this by exploiting a loophole that allows the environment minister to avoid officially recognizing a species as endangered by entering into an endless “period of

consultation.” The lack of constitutional recognition for environmental rights has also allowed the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority to become their own overseers as an autonomous “arm’s-length” government agency. This uncomfortable fox-in-the-henhouse situation has resulted in such extreme discrepancies that the Canadian Environment Assessment Agency (CEAA) has determined there is insufficient, science-based information to support the port authority’s finding that the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 expansion would not adversely impact the surrounding ecosystem. While the port’s self-assessment minimized any potential impact the project would have, the CEAA determined the negative impact would be “potentially high in magnitude, permanent, irreversible, and, continuous.” Federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau’s announcement of a review of port authorities could not come at a better time. No landlord should issue their own permissions, especially when the result will impact generations to come. Isn’t it time Canadians had the constitutional right to a livable environment? Community advocate Nicholas Wong ran as an independent candidate in Delta South in last year’s provincial election. He finished second with more than 6,400 votes.

Constituent urges MP to protect B.C.’s waterways Editor: I have just returned from a Defend the Water event at New West MP Peter Julian’s office. There were about 80 people present and our intention was, once again, to be defenders of the B.C. coastal and inland waters against the environmental disruption and harm that the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion will cause. There were people from outside the Lower Mainland and from other provinces. We were a mix of First Nations and settlers, but we were all drawn together by our desire to protect B.C. waters for our children

and grandchildren’s sake. I was not the only citizen there from Delta and so I want Delta MP Carla Qualtrough to know that many of her constituents are among those concerned about increased tanker traffic, about possible oil spills and, most definitely, about the Liberal government’s lack of effort to release Canada from its dependence on oil. It is shameful there are European countries, and even Third World nations, that get either all or most of their power from sustainable sources, while a country with the wealth and technology of Canada is still relying on oil.

I urge Qualtrough to listen to the people of B.C. when they say this pipeline is being forced on them by the federal government. The Liberals use the reason that it is good for the country as a whole, but anyone who looks seriously at this project can see it is for short-term gain only in terms of economics and job creation. The people of B.C. are defending their coast and their inland waters from a government that cannot see that a single oil spill here will mean the coast is never the same again. The Salish Sea will never recover from an oil spill. Kathleen Beaton

When picking battles ensure they’re bigger than off-leash

Editor: David Suzuki once said of humanity, “We’re in a giant car heading towards a brick wall and everyone’s arguing over where they’re going to sit.” The recent letters about off-leash dogs make me remember that quote. For those who chose to vent their vitriol at dogs and their owners, this is not the burning issue you should append your name to. I say take a deep breath and realize there are much bigger issues facing this world. I suggest widening your gaze and getting involved with making our community a better place,

not trying to divide us with petty dislikes. If you know dogs, you will have experienced the true joy in seeing them run free, just like kids do in a park. Both need exercise for their health and well-being. Yes, there are disagreements (both with kids and dogs), there will always be a bully (both with kids and dogs) and there will inevitably be uncaring parents, but you don’t punish everyone for that. Instead you focus on changing that individual behaviour, which is exactly what our enforced bylaws currently reflect. Dogs pro-

vide a valuable service in our community; they are a complement to our wellbeing, providing comfort and companionship not just for families but also single people, the elderly and the infirm. We need more and better facilities where dogs can run free and where humans can avoid should they so choose. We don’t need more restrictive laws nor enforcement, we just need to chill more, choose our battles, move on from bad events and focus only on what is important, for everyone’s well-being. Last-second glimpse spares pedestrian

Editor: In spite of the Delta Police Department’s public relations releases to the contrary, I see that pedestrians are still fair game at 56th Street and 12th Avenue for callous drivers. At about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, I started to step into the crosswalk when a driver cut me off in order to make a quick right turn.

Fortunately, I’d taken a last-second glimpse over my left shoulder and spotted her coming so was able to check my gait. She saw me but made no effort to slow down, let alone stop. If Chief Neil Dubord’s claims about community policing are true, and if his publicized plan to make 56th Street safer is sincere,

he’ll have a constable drop around for a chat with her about her careless driving. I have provided the department with the licence plate number of the driver. Greg J. Edwards Editor’s note: The Delta Police Department has advised it will be conducting the necessary follow up with the driver.

Disposable society shouldn’t extend to elderly

Editor: We are living in a disposable society where items are not repaired but discarded. I fear that we humans will be considered disposable when we reach a certain age or cost the health system too much money.

The recent proposal by Fraser Health to provide assisted suicide services at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner gives me concern that it is part of the plan to speed up the process of dying. Those of us in our 80s and 90s have contributed

to society and we deserve to have our voices heard. I suggest that Fraser Health should explore other options and let the Irene Thomas Hospice continue to provide palliative care for those who desire to die natural deaths. Rod Douglas

Good Friday … oh so good

“You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead.” Acts 3:15 Why do we call Good Friday “good” when something so bad took place? I struggle to find the name fitting if I look at what happened on the cross. It’s not a good day when anyone endures an undeserved death. Yet from heaven’s perspective that day was not random or unexpected, it was purposed. That day would change the possibilities of every day thereafter. On that day just as darkness thought it had everything, it was about to discover it had nothing. A day when Jesus said, “It is finished,” to darkness

and then bowed His head as He opened the door to freedom. Jesus left no debt outstanding, every part of His pain was for your healing. Every scar He endured was

for your shame and sin to be removed. That day was “oh, so good” even though it looked “oh, so bad.” It was good at a level we cannot truly comprehend. Good that did more for you than you could ever deserve or achieve. If you’re reading this today and don’t know Jesus as your Saviour, the One who forgives, heals and frees you, this Good Friday can become the day you let what He did for you change you. I am praying for you, that you would seek Him today. He paid it all for everyone. This is love and love wins in the end. Happy Easter.

local group of photographers is once again putting on an exhibit in Ladner as part of the annual Capture Photography Festival. The show, titled Idling South of the Tunnel, will

feature between 15 to 20 photos from dioptiks photography collective members Adina Shore, Tyler Garnham, Robert Lowe, Ronan Considine, Rick Pelletier and Alison Hogg. Garnham says the theme of the show revolves around local change. “There’s just a lot going on and it all seems to be

south of the tunnel,” he says, referencing the unresolved George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project and proposed port expansion as examples. Pelletier notes the exhibit provides a more contemporary way of looking at landscape as well. Considine says the show gives a chance for people to “see their community

through a different light.” An opening reception is set for Friday, April 6 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Stir Coffee House, 101-508548th Ave., Ladner. The show will run for about a month, says Considine. The Capture Photography Festival “strives to nurture emerging talent, engage commu-

Hudson Andrews got into drawing and painting as a way to relax. The Tsawwassen resident works part-time as a forensic investigator. “It’s stressful work,” he says. “When a job is stressful, you look for outlets.” He’ll be showing about 50 pieces of his work at an exhibit at the Tsawwassen Library for the month of April. He’s got a reception scheduled for Saturday, April 7. Andrews likes to call his artwork “mindful doo-

dling.” “It forces you to really focus. But it’s not hard work, it just makes the mind get centered.” The 64-year-old says he doesn’t see himself as an artist. “An artist is someone who is disciplined and has really dedicated themselves to their art. I just enjoy sketching and doodling and then if other people enjoy it, then I’m happy.” Andrews takes his art kit wherever he goes, including on holidays. He works in black ink and watercolours for the most part.

He has turned his art into greeting cards and has also taken his work to events like the Tsawwassen Sun Festival and the Concerts in the Park series. He’ll have a mix of drawings and paintings at the library exhibit. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, April 7 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Andrews will be in attendance. There will also be tea and cookies.

Delta Ice Hawks celebrate their PJHL championship Wednesday night after a 4-2 game six victory over the Ridge Meadows Flames.

Ice Hawks are PJHL champions Delta wins fourth league title in franchise history with Cyclone Taylor Cup next

They began the season with nine straight wins and the Delta Ice Hawks never really slowed down until their mission was completed on Wednesday night in Maple Ridge. The Ice Hawks are Pacific Junior Hockey League champions for the fourth time in their 21-year history after a 4-2 win over the Ridge Meadows Flames — taking the best-of-seven series in six games. They now will represent the PJHL at the Cyclone Taylor Cup provincial junior “B” championships April 12-15 in Richmond. The four-team tournament will also include the champions of the Kootenay International and Vancouver Island leagues, along with the host Richmond Sockeyes. The Hawks bowed out in six games to Aldergrove in the PJHL finals a year ago. A solid core of returning players and a blue-chip recruiting class put them over the top. They blitzed through their regular season schedule with a franchise best 37-4-0-3 record and that roll continued through playoffs, winning 12 of 15 games to be crowned champions. “We saw Aldergrove celebrating (last year) and it hurt to watch,” said captain Gary Dhaliwal who scored two more goals Wednesday and led the league with 10 in the post-season. “All the returning guys, right from the top with (owner) Eduard (Epshtein), to coaches Darren, Steve and the whole organization our only goal this year was to win the regular season championship, win playoffs and now we are going to go onto the Cyclone Taylor.” Despite their dominance since September, there still was some unexpected turbulence to deal with when head coach and general

Ice Hawks captain Gary Dhaliwal hoists the PJHL championship trophy. manager Darren Naylor left the club in late December for the same roles with the B.C. Hockey League’s Nanaimo Clippers. Less than a month later he decided to bring on Steve Robinson to take over the head coaching reigns. He was guiding cross-river rival Richmond until he was unexpectedly let go in early December over his expanded coaching duties that also includes the Seafair Bantam A1 Islanders. Ironically, Robinson left soon after Wednesday’s game for Kamloops where the

Islanders are playing in the Western Canadian Bantam AAA Championships, starting Thursday. He will be the Hawks’ GM and head coach next season with Naylor fully committed to the Clippers. “You have to give your kudos to Steve,” said Naylor. “I know a lot of coaches are really stubborn at times, me included. But I knew Steve and that every time I would watch games I could tell him things I see. He respected the fact I was so close to them and we are all on the same page. It’s not easy doing what he did.” The clinching win saw Delta dominate much of the first period and lead 2-0 on goals from Jesse Nelson and Jonathan Rees. The resilient Flames weren’t going to roll over though, scoring twice in the second to tie the game at 2-2 before Jordan Deyrmenjian restored the lead on a power play that looked dangerous all night. Just like they did in their two previous series, the Hawks buckled down defensively and held their opponent off the scoresheet in the third period, despite playing nearly the final 10 minutes shorthanded. An empty netter from Dhaliwal with four seconds left iced the win and the championship. Delta finished the playoffs surrendering only four goals after the second period in 15 games. “It’s easy for me when our penalty kill has been so good all year,” said 18-year-old goaltender Jordan Naylor who made 26 saves and led the playoffs in goals against average (1.56) and save percentage (.936). “The guys are working so hard and it really helps me out. “I was told this is exactly a year to the day we lost the finals and no question this has been our goal since. We still have some work to do but we are going to celebrate right now.”

Excellent recruiting class paved way for Delta to win PJHL regular season & playoff titles MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Just how good was the Delta Ice Hawks’ 2017 recruiting class? Look no further than game six of the Pacific Junior Hockey League finals and the championship banner dangling in front of them. When the Hawks needed to kill a rash of late penalties, including a two-man advantage for 36 seconds, it was three rookies on the ice in front of goaltender Jordan Naylor. Defencemen Aiden Hansen-Bukata and Gabriel LeBlanc were joined by forward Jonathan Rees. It was a scenario that is almost unheard when it comes to post-season success at any level of junior hockey but the trio got the job done just like they have all season. When Delta came within two games of winning the PJHL title last year, general manager Darren Naylor’s off-season

now open!

focus was on re-building his blueline. He landed Hansen-Bukuta, Isiah Hendricks and Thomas Garey from the Delta Hockey Academy’s Midget Prep team, Liam Visram from Major Midget and LeBlanc from the Pacific Coast Amateur Midget Tier One champion Coquitlam Chiefs. Throw in six more forwards including Rees from Major Midget, and Naylor’s recruiting efforts paved the way for this team’s success. So did having plenty of faith in their abilities. “You have to give it up to the coaching staff for having that trust in us. Having that ice time really helps as a rookie,” said Hansen-Bukuta, a South Delta native who finished second in team playoff scoring with 14 points. “It gains us momentum and experience as we get more and more reps. You get more confidence. “I can’t give enough credit to my

@ Boundary Bay Regional Park

D-partner Gabe too. He has played an absolutely huge supporting role there.” Rees, who won over 70 percent of his face-offs in the post-season, earned the league’s rookie-of-the-year honours. Hansen-Bukuta and Leblanc were right behind him for the award. It’s a good bet the upcoming Cyclone Taylor Cup will be the final time all three are in Ice Hawk uniforms before they move onto the B.C. Hockey League. “They have moxie they have character. They make plays, take hits, eat pucks. They do all the little things that guys much older players than they are are doing,” said head coach Steve Robinson of his rookies. “It doesn’t take long over the body of work of 20 games or whatever it is to gain trust in certain guys and know their tendencies.” Naylor added the process of building this team actually began two years ago when some players tasted playoff

success in a first round upset of regular season champion North Vancouver. The momentum continued last season and now the goal has been completed. “We went with a young team last year and we were lucky to surround them with some great vets like (Mark) Trotman, (Cam) Cuthbert and (Quinten) Wideski. Those guys are a huge part of this too that’s why it’s great to see a couple of them back here (as assistant coaches),” said Naylor. “I wanted to build on our weakness at the back end. I think we put together one of the best defensive units you will ever see at this level. They are so good. I don’t really care about age. I knew these kids well enough and experience they have. They are just good hockey players. “This is big for the organization. It’s been three years in the making. There’s been a lot of hard work getting these guys here.”

Ron and June immigrated to Canada from England in 1965 to start a new life together. In 1966, they settled in Tsawwassen to raise their family. Ron ran his own industrial sewing equipment business in Vancouver for over 40 years. Ron was an avid golfer and curler. He was a member at Hazelmere Golf and Country Club for over 35 years where he played an active role in the senior men’s club and helped run several tournaments to raise money for prostate and breast cancer. He became a lifetime member at Tunnel Town Curling Club where he played for 50 years.

Ron will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at Hazelmere Golf and Country Club, 18150 8th Avenue, Surrey, BC on Sunday, April 8th from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m.

FERRING, Marilyn July 30, 1934 − March 17, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marilyn Ferring (Née Auld), who left us peacefully just before midnight on Saturday, March 17th, 2018, while in hospice care at Delta Hospital. Marilyn will be remembered by those who knew her as a fierce and confident, yet loving and compassionate woman; never afraid to speak her mind. Marilyn began life in Estevan, SK, before moving to BC and becoming a stewardess with Air Canada. There, she would meet her husband; a dashing young pilot named Thomas Ferring. Together they had three sons, and eventually put down roots in Tsawwassen. Marilyn lived a long and full life; spoiled by Tom and her sons. She was loved dearly by all who knew her, and she held those relationships close to her heart. Marilyn is predeceased by her husband, Tom, sister, Gail and mother Sally. She leaves behind three sons; Mark, Tyler (Mony) and Guy (Claire) as well as seven grandchildren; Allicia, Scott, Rachelle, Maddie, Lucie, Maya and Chloe and two great− grandchildren (River and Chevy). The family would like to thank the staff at Delta Hospital and Augustine House for the excellent care they provided Marilyn during the past several years. A celebration of life will be held in the coming months.
