A random quick pick ticket has resulted in a major windfall for a Tsawwassen couple. Christina Sevenoaks and her husband Tim are $7 million richer after matching all six numbers (11, 12, 19, 24, 28 and 46) in the March 28 Lotto 6/49 draw. She purchased the ticket from Thrifty Foods in Tsawwassen. “I found out last Thursday morning. It was total disbelief. I couldn’t believe it. I lost all feeling in my legs,” she said. “We’ve told very close friends and our immediate family. They are all very happy for us and say we are very deserving. It’s been amazing.” Christina is a regular 6/49 player, but admits she doesn’t have any special numbers. She said she’s won smaller prizes before, but nothing even close to last week’s jackpot. The couple, which has lived in South Delta for 12 years, was at B.C. Lottery Corporation headquarters in Vancouver Wednesday afternoon to claim the

• March 28, 8:56 p.m., 5900-block of 12th Avenue: Complainant reported the theft of six demo golf putters and 25 sample hats from a vehicle in the parking lot. The complainant believes the vehicle was possibly left unlocked. The putters are described as Odyssey “EXO” valued at $400 each. • March 29, 10:20 a.m., 3600-block of Highway 17A: Complainant reported they were travelling on the highway when their roof rack broke and they were forced to leave their kayak on the side of the road. When they returned an hour later the kayak was gone. Mainroad and Delta Works advised they did not pick up the kayak. The kayak is described as a 14-foot yellow “Delta” kayak valued at $1,000. • March 29, 7:19 p.m., 5500-block of 14B Avenue: Report from complainant that the passenger window of their vehicle was smashed sometime while parked on the

street. Nothing stolen from the vehicle. • March 31, 2:14 p.m., 5000-block of Canoe Pass Way: A business reported a person had just stolen nine pairs of shoes valued at $685. Police attended the store but the suspect was gone on arrival. A detailed description of the suspect provided to police. • April 2, 6:57 a.m., 00-block of 55A Street: Report received from a complainant that their mother’s home had been broken into and rummaged through. The suspects entered the locked home by prying open a rear bedroom window. Approximately $100 in loose change stolen. • April 2, 8:51 a.m., 5900-block of 17A Avenue: Complainant reported their truck was broken into while left at the park. Items stolen include a Nikon D7000 camera, 60 mil macro lens, remote cable shutter, memory cards and two black pelican cases valued at $3,080. • April 2, 7:35 p.m., 4900-block of Canoe Pass Way: A food services business reported a silver Dyson electric air hand dryer had been stolen. The hand dryer is valued at $300. • April 3, 5:50 p.m., 5100-block of 8A Avenue: Complainant reported someone had broken into their vacant residence which is being renovated. Entry point was through an unlocked door. Investigation to continue with a list of stolen items to be provided to police.

• March 28, 9:50 a.m., 5400-block of 44th Avenue: Complainant reported their vehicle

had been keyed causing $1,000 in damage. The complainant unsure of when or where the incident occurred. A file number provided to the complainant for insurance purposes. • March 29, 8:20 a.m., 4600-block of Evergreen Lane: Complainant reported that sometime overnight their parked vehicle was keyed. A three-foot key mark extended across the trunk of the vehicle. No suspects or witnesses. • March 30, 1 a.m., 6800-block of Dennett Place: Police received a report from an alarm company that a break and enter was in progress at a business. Police attended and located a smashed window in the office area. The building was contained by police but suspects not located. The owner of the business attended and reported four laptops were likely the only items stolen. • March 30, 1 p.m.: Complainant reported to police headquarters they had provided their personal and credit card details to what appeared to be a legitimate request from Paypal for an outstanding bill. Before the scam was realized the complainant’s computer shut off and they could not delete the input. • March 31, 8:52 a.m., 5000-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported that a group of youth had targeted the suite and vehicle of their tenant. The youth threw eggs, yogurt and flour on the tenant’s unit and vehicle. Police attended and found flour had also been dumped over the vehicle of the tenant’s partner. No other damage observed.

The former Ladner Village Hardware store on Delta Street may soon get a new lease on life. The space, which has been vacant since previous owner James Price closed up shop to head into retirement last February, has been bought by a new owner with the idea of renovating the building into three commercial rental units. According to the City of Delta, a development permit application has been submitted and is currently under review. Delta’s director of planning Marcy Sangret said the next step will be to forward the application to the advisory design panel to consider the proposed design. She said there is no date yet when the application will be considered by

Delta council. Architect Brian Hart said if all goes well with application approvals and renovating the building, the space could be ready to occupy by the fall.

There is significant work to do, so it is hard to imagine what the spaces would look like at this point. BRIAN HART

“The building has two structural lines from front to back, so they become natural divisions when you are breaking up a larger space into smaller,” said Hart. “The building already has two doors, so we would be adding a third doorway for the third

space as well as adding insulation, a new floor, new finishes, fixing the roof, adding new storefront windows and three washrooms as well as storage space and emergency exits. For a funky hardware store, uneven floors and such are fun, but for other tenants, not so much fun.” The spaces would each be roughly 1,000 square feet. Hart said no businesses have come forward yet to express interest in occupying the units. “There is significant work to do, so it is hard to imagine what the spaces would look like at this point,” he said. “When we did the rendering we showed what could be some typical businesses, but they have nothing to do with what may or may not go there.”

TransLink is moving forward with plans to add double-decker buses to its fleet, but it’s still not known if any of them will service South Delta. Following a successful four-month pilot project that saw double-decker buses tested on routes in Delta, Surrey, White Rock, Langley and Vancouver, TransLink has put out a request for proposals to add 32 buses with the goal of having them in service by mid-2019. During the pilot project, the double-decker buses were provided free of charge by bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis. In Delta, the buses were tested on the 601 and 620 routes. TransLink media relations advisor Jill Drews said the company is still working on the exact routes that the doubledecker buses will service, but could say they will operate out of the

Richmond Transit Centre. “During the testing phase, we found some tree trimming and adjustments of overhead wires were necessary in Delta to allow the double-deckers to pass under,” Drews said. “The buses we tested are diesel and we would be looking to procure diesel buses.” TransLink said the pilot project yielded overwhelming positive feedback from riders in all of the test communities. Double-decker buses were also a hit with bus operators, scoring well in

drivability, ease of maintenance and fuel economy. The buses feature double the capacity of a conventional bus, panoramic views from the top deck, wide, well-lit staircase with handrails, a screen that allows riders to see vacant seats up top before going upstairs and full accessibility. TransLink will fund the new buses through federal gas tax funding. Twenty-seven of the buses will replace aging Orion buses and five will be expansion vehicles.

Four Delta organizations are pleading with the NDP government to exempt non-profits from the new payroll health tax. The Delta Gymnastics Society, the Delta Hospital Foundation, the Delta Hospice Society and British Columbia Guide Dog Services have penned a joint letter to express opposition to the tax they say will force them to cut services, raise prices or lay off staff. In a news release, Delta South Liberal MLA Ian Paton said he’s sympathetic to their concerns and supports their action. “My colleagues and I have raised numerous examples like this in the legislature, but the NDP simply aren’t listening. I hope this letter will finally get through to them, so that these groups and the families they serve won’t suffer from this punishing tax,” he stated. Paton said the Delta Gymnastics Society employs 33 part-time and 17 full-time staff, most of whom live in Delta. The coaches are all paid as they are not allowed to deliver services without proper certification. The non-profit welcomes more than 2,000 children and youth every week in addition to facilitating activities at local schools. Executive director Ana Arciniega said her organization can’t afford

governments and potentially school districts face increased costs through the tax. Finance Minister Carol James defends the tax,

noting the current MSP is a “regressive tax” that sees a family making $60,000 a year paying the same amount as a family making $600,000.

The Delta Gymnastics Society will likely have to increase fees to cover the costs of the new payroll health tax. the additional $25,419 it expects to fork over in payroll tax and said it will likely be forced to increase fees. Arciniega, who said the tax might put the viability of her organization in jeopardy, participated in a video with Paton to explain her situation. The letter penned jointly by the four organizations urges the government to exempt non-profits. “This new payroll health tax was meant to replace MSP payments. We understand and appreciate the government’s desire to remove these premiums and make life more affordable for British Columbians. However, shifting the tax burden onto small businesses, non-profits and local charities is not the answer,” the letter states. “Rather than raising our taxes, government should be trying to make life easier for local non-profits. We are pleading with the government to exempt

non-profit organizations from the employer health tax.” The provincial budget included the elimination of Medical Services Plan premiums by 2020 to be replaced by a payroll health tax. The change will be phased in with MSP premiums being cut by 50 per cent in 2019 and eliminated entirely the following year. The tax begins in full next year, requiring employers with payrolls over $500,000 a year to pay a 0.98 per cent tax annually. The tax goes up in increments with large employers hit the hardest as they will pay a 1.95 per cent tax on payrolls over $1.5 million. For employers who currently don’t pay their employees’ MSP premiums, it will be a particularly big wallop, but even those who do will find themselves paying more with the new tax. It’s a charge that will particularly sting hardest

’m having trouble striking that match to light my hair on fire over the possibility of a casino coming to Ladner. I recognize that some view the proposal by Gateway to build a casinohotel complex on the site of the Delta Town & Country Inn as an abomination, a disgrace for Delta and a further erosion of our society, but I can’t help but view such opposition as philosophical cherry picking. I won’t take issue with the argument that a casino contributes to social ills, but if we are to exclude any activity, entity or product because some people are prone to abusing it, well, then we’ve got a lot more to worry about than the possibility of some slot machines coming to town. Society is full of vices — liquor, cigarettes, drugs, even fast food — that certain segments of the population struggle to deal with, but that doesn’t mean we outlaw them at the expense of the rest of us. The reality of the situation is there are already three casinos — River Rock in Richmond, Starlight in New Westminster and Elements in Surrey — within half an hour’s drive as well as several more just beyond that perimeter, so preventing a Delta casino from being constructed would only do so much to limit access for gamblers, problem or otherwise. Approximately 4,000 people from Delta already have casino rewards cards in their wallets, proving that if you live here and want to gamble, you’ll find a way to do so. Another reality is the distinct possibility that if Delta turns it down, the casino could be built at the Tsawwassen First Nation, which also expressed interest to the B.C. Lottery Corporation in playing host to a gaming facility. That way it’s right on our doorstep so we get all of the potential ills, but it would be the TFN government, not the City of Delta, which would receive $3 million or more annually in revenue that would get pumped back into the community likely through capital projects. I’m not under any illusion that casinos are magical places where smiling customers routinely hit jackpots like they do in the TV commercials, but nor are they the dens of despair that some make them out to be. They’re an entertainment option and in case you haven’t noticed, there’s not a whole lot to do in Delta most evenings.

Housing types most needed are often in shortest supply

f there is one common issue that stands out above all others in Metro Vancouver and elsewhere it is housing and affordability. At the water cooler, the dinner table and coffee shops everywhere, people are talking about a fascinating subject that has so many aspects to it. A new government was elected that promised solutions for housing affordability and various tax strategies and changes to mortgage rules have been implemented in an attempt to cool the market. The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver came out with its March stats this week and it does not look like anything is really helping to halt the trend. Although home sales in the region are down a whopping 30 per cent, prices have remained stable and essentially unaffordable for first-time buyers. The composite average for a home in Metro Vancouver is $1,084,000, up 16 per cent over this time last year. The benchmark for a detached home is currently $1,274,000 in Tsawwassen and $1,008,000 in Ladner. How can a young family come up with the hundred grand down payment and afford the massive mortgage out here? They can’t in general terms. Townhomes are in the mid$700,000 range in South Delta and there has been some sales activity in this type of housing but

none in Tsawwassen as there are not many townhomes available to buy or sell. Some have suggested that older “fixer uppers” be somehow retained for young families to buy and invest in as opposed to them being gobbled up and rezoned by “greedy” developers. How a young family could purchase a home is still the question considering land value trumps building value every time and why would a young family subject themselves to a lifetime of financial stress dealing with endless renovations? By 2041 the region’s population is forecast to grow by 1.2 million residents to 3.4 million, which will require more than 574,000 new housing units to be built, according to Metro Vancouver data. Part of the solution to the crisis is to build middle ground housing form which is badly needed in Delta and, in particular, Tsawwassen.

Long-time real estate analyst and consultant Bob Ransford had this to say about this type of housing: “The market is really hungry for that middle housing — not the large detached single-family home nor the high-rise condominium apartment — but the right sized home in more compact, more densely populated, walkable mixed-use neighbourhoods where the car isn’t the primary concern. Pocket neighbourhoods, with smaller detached homes that share a commons is one way of providing that housing. Why are people looking for this kind of housing? It’s not affordability. It’s not ease of life. It’s not the neighbourliness they are looking for. It’s all of these reasons.” I attended an open house for an early stage offering of a pocket townhome neighbourhood here in Tsawwassen recently. The local developer, Maple Leaf Homes, has a vision for the type of infill density zoning that our community needs. I am hoping that our next local government remembers the Official Community Plan is a living document and it will be receptive to rezoning applications that will afford opportunity for young people to buy and for empty nesters to downsize in their own communities. All choices deserve respect

Editor: Through my personal experience with Delta Hospice Society, both as a former volunteer and as a family member when my father spent his last days in the Irene Thomas Hospice, I know first-hand the wonderful work of this community organization. I fully support Fraser Health’s decision to provide MAiD in hospice and palliative care settings. In my opinion, a hospice setting is a very appropriate location for medical assistance in dying to occur as these facilities specialize in supporting both the individual and their loved ones with compassion and care during the end of life journey. It would be discriminatory to demand that an individual residing in the

Irene Thomas Hospice be transferred to another location if they choose MAiD. At such a vulnerable time for the patient and the family, we must not stigmatize individuals who make a personal and lawful decision. MAiD need not be carried out by Delta Hospice Society staff as it is my understanding there are community physicians that would provide this service, just as they would for someone choosing to die in their private residence. Though I understand there are strong personal beliefs on MAiD, these beliefs need to be set aside when it comes to lawful publicly funded health services. At a time when our health care system expenditures are rising and

efficiencies are needed, another separate service along with additional expenses is not necessary. The Irene Thomas Hospice is almost entirely funded through public health funding through a contract with Fraser Health. It would be unfortunate to put this funding at risk should Delta Hospice staff continue to resist this policy, potentially impacting hospice services for all in our community. Respect for individual choice is of utmost importance. I believe that Delta Hospice Society has a responsibility to ensure services are patient-centered to ensure that individual legal choices are honoured, respected and accessible in this community health facility. Labels do nothing for problem

Editor: Re: Easy to blame guns, but system has its faults, letter to the editor, March 28 Psycho, screwball, crazy guy. These are the words Greg McGregor chose to describe the young man who shot and killed 17 others in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14. Loonier, screeches, squeamish. These are the words he chose to describe “the left” (people who are advocating for stronger anti-gun laws in the U.S.). Clown car parade. These are the words he chose to describe the entire staff contingent of a government agency, a police department and a school board. So what is the real point of this tirade? It’s impor-

tant to note, not just what McGregor said in his letter, but what he didn’t say. What he fails to mention is that the so-called psycho/screwball/crazy guy was a young man who obviously had difficulty fitting into society and expressing himself in appropriate ways (to say the least). If he had been given the right social tools he needed, then he might not have felt the need to buy a way-too-easy-to-access military-style weapon. We, as a so-called civilized society, need to find more efficient and effective ways to identify these vulnerable (young) people, and help them to cope much better than they are presently; otherwise, preventable tragedies like

In fact, it only serves to perpetuate the shame/ stigma that people already feel within themselves, but often cannot articulate in a healthy and productive way. The words McGregor chose to use about the young man (and others who apparently failed to stop him) says more about his own thought processes than those of anyone else. LEAP project looks for summer jobs for youth with disabilities Local non-profit calls it a win-win for employers and employees

The Delta Community Living Society is seeking summer employment opportunities for youth with disabilities. Through the LEAP youth mentor project, society staff and peer mentor volunteers work with job seekers to identify their employment interests and aptitudes, and develop their employment related skills. The project aims to increase the level of employment among people with developmental disabilities in Delta. Among the first steps is to find local businesses that are interested in supporting the LEAP project

with part-time, full-time or temporary job opportunities. “Many local employers have partnered with us during the first four years of this project, including Delta Golf Course, South Delta Physiotherapy and Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association,” said Annette Borrows, the society’s employment strategy manager. “It really proves to be a win-win for the people we support and for the businesses that have partnered with us.” TBIA executive director Lydia Elder found that to be the case when the business organization hired

youth with developmental disabilities as community ambassadors last summer. Elder said not only did the youth gain real-life experience, but businesses were beautified and residents appreciated the work and positive demeanor of the community ambassadors. Borrows said research has found that, as employees, people with diverse abilities are dependable, have high productivity and great attendance records. “In 2015, B.C. had an unemployment rate of approximately 84 per cent among people with developmental disabilities,”

said Borrows. “There is evidence that the rate of unemployment among youth with developmental disabilities is even higher. We aim to change that here in Delta with our LEAP project.” The Delta Community Living Society is a nonprofit organization that provides support to people with developmental disabilities and their families. Gateway hoping to convince public and politicians that casino complex is right for Ladner Sandor Gyarmati sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com Delta residents could be dropping a few bucks in the penny slots in their own backyard in a couple of years. After several months of lightly attended open houses and civic committee meetings, the proposal by Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Ltd. to build a $70-million casino/ hotel complex at the Delta Town & Country site will be going to Delta council for consideration next Monday. If given preliminary approval, it would then head to a public hearing later this spring. The casino company is hoping ﬁnal approval will be granted not long afterward so it can begin an ambitious construction schedule this fall. A grand opening of the yet to be named complex at the junction of highways 17A and 99 in Ladner would take place in 2020. The complex, which in addition to the casino and 116-room hotel would include restaurants and meeting spaces, would be in a high visibility location, marking a further change in South Delta’s landscape following the addition of malls at the Tsawwassen First Nation a couple of years ago. While the application still must receive civic approval, the City of Delta wholeheartedly jumped

at the opportunity to land a casino after the B.C. Lottery Corporation invited Surrey, Delta and the TFN to submit expressions of interest as Gateway looks to relocate Surrey’s Newton Community Gaming Centre. Having already voted down a proposed destination casino a few years earlier, Surrey council declined, while the TFN and Delta both submitted expressions of interest. Delta’s submission was clearly the keenest, identifying the Delta Town & Country Inn as a site that’s ideally suited as “a complete entertainment complex” because of its distance from residential neighbourhoods and access to major transportation corridors. It’s a far cry from almost two decades earlier when Delta politicians were opposed to the idea of the province’s casino expansion plans as well as a proposed destination casino and bingo facility at the TFN, which at the time would have partnered with Lady Luck Entertainment. That attitude changed long ago in other Lower Mainland cities that are now raking in big revenues with their casinos, including neighbouring Richmond, where hundreds came

The lottery corporation told the Optimist it estimates revenue coming to Delta will be at the top end of its initial annual $1.5 million to $3 million projection based on the casino opening with 500 slot machines, a ﬁgure BCLC has termed as a conservative estimate. The proposed Delta casino would be built to house up to 600 slot machines to accommodate potential growth. “It’s not just gambling. It’s not just entertainment. It’s the beneﬁt that goes back to the communities,” Chris Fairclough, manager of stakeholder engagement for BCLC, told the Delta Chamber of Commerce earlier this year. An issue raised by those opposed is whether a casino would simply see money currently spent in the community being funneled into gambling, while another concern has been whether a casino would impact vulnerable people such as seniors or problem gamblers. About 4,000 adults from Delta are registered to play at casinos else-

where in the region, so a built-in market is already there, according to the BCLC, which states a Delta casino would also serve a wider market south of the Fraser River. Fairclough said about 3.3 per cent of gamblers have “some issues” when it comes to gambling, which is why BCLC has taken a number of measures, including community-based counselling. He said the lottery corporation’s

emphasis is on player health and “positive play.” BCLC has invested in gambling research at UBC and from those studies the GameSense strategy was developed, he explained. Also, the lottery corporation noted the proposed casino/hotel complex would be an enjoyable entertainment experience that’s more than just gambling. Brad Desmarais, BCLC’s vice-president of casino and community gaming said BCLC owns and maintains the slot machines as well as designs the casino layouts. He said the goal is create “a pleasant environment” for players. Unlike Las Vegas casinos, which are destination facilities, Desmarais noted the Delta casino would be geared for a regional market as a form of entertainment. People will want to come back time and time again, includ-

ing those who don’t even gamble, he added. Crime has been perhaps the biggest issue for those opposed to a Delta casino. Media reports last year exposed the Richmond casino, operated by Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, being implicated in high-roller money laundering. Attorney General David Eby commissioned Peter German, a former RCMP senior ofﬁcer, to come up with recommendations to combat the problem. The B.C. Lottery Corporation already implemented German’s interim recommendations requiring casino patrons to complete a source of funds declaration for cash deposits over $10,000, while all chip transactions using cash and bank drafts over $10,000 a day must include a receipt that shows the ﬁnancial institution and account from which the currency was obtained. Gateway CAO Jag Nijjar told the Optimist, “If you come with some money and you play a little bit, you can’t get a cheque for the money you came in with. I’d have to be able to verify through

Shoulder issues could be rotator cuff injury

Do you feel pain in your shoulder when you reach overhead? How about when you comb your hair or when you reach around your body to scratch your mid-back? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may have a rotator cuff injury. The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles (the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis) in and around the back of both shoulders. They pull the top of the arm bone, known as the humeral head, into the socket of our shoulder joint. It’s these muscles that form a type of “cuff” around the arm and shoulder to enforce joint security. In other words, these muscles aid in keeping the arm in its socket and provide the strength, flexibility and control needed to move your shoulder. These guys are important little muscles. However, because the shoulder is a very mobile joint, rotator cuff injuries

are fairly common. Causes of injury can be anything from falling on the arm, lifting the arm and performing repetitive arm activities (especially those done overhead) to getting older. The injury is super common among people whose jobs, or hobbies, include heavy demands on their shoulders, such as athletes, Crossfitters and people in the construction trades. There’s a good reason why Travis Wolsey will be cheering for Uganda athletes at the Commonwealth Games that are now underway in Australia. The head of Sungod Sports Orthopaedic and Physiotherapy Clinics and Tsawwassen resident was part of a Canadian entourage that recently visited the African country to access athletes and educate national team staff. The trip was organized by the legendary Dr. Jack Taunton who was the Chief Medical Officer at the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. He assembled a team of doctors, orthopedists and physiotherapists. It was his second trip to Uganda and this time he asked Wolsey to come. “Dr. Taunton is the champion of sports medicine. He wanted us to take sports medicine to Uganda,” explained Wolsey. “He had con-

nections with some doctors there. They have athletes. They have teams. They qualify for the Commonwealth Games. “What they found is they are competing injured. They just don’t have the resources to support their athletes. It was basically to create sports medicine over there.” For two weeks, Wolsey and the Canadian medical group visited with national teams, typically at their training centre. Tents and treatment tables were set-up beside the playing field or in the gym each morning. Athletes would first be assessed by the two sports medicine doctors then proceed for further attention. The line-ups were almost overwhelming. “Pretty much everyone got sent to me,” Wolsey smiled. “It was long days of seeing athlete after athlete. There were chronic injuries, acute injuries, torn ACLs. We taught their staff how to access. How to rehabilitate something like

a torn ACL. They just didn’t have the resources to know what to do with that.” The trip served as another purpose — donating thousands of dollars worth of sports medicine equipment that had been purchased and collected in the months before. Items such as knee braces and even top quality medical tape. As much as Wolsey helped athletes with immediate treatment, it was passing on his knowledge and developing relationships that will have the greatest impact. “The level of poverty was an eye opener but one of the big things I took away was the people were so great. They were keen to learn. Just like sponges. They wanted to take anything we could give them knowledge wise. We taught doctors and physios what we call level three and advance sports medicine. That was in conjunction with sports medicine that we know here. We also did orthopaedic

rounds in the hospitals. “With technology now, we are still able to connect with their doctors all the time. I am still getting text messages and emails running things by me. It’s more of a relationship now. That’s what we were hoping to turn it in to.” While Wolsey deals with plenty of hockey related injuries back at home, the big sports in Uganda are soccer, basketball, cricket rugby, netball and athletics. His career has included working at the Olympics, Memorial Cup and other high-profile North American events. This trip ranks near the top. “It is definitely you there. I never thought I would go to Africa in my life. It was so awesome that it was my profession that opened the door for me to go. It’s one thing to go and do good. It’s another to go and give some valuable teaching and sharing knowledge with people as well. They really wanted it.”

Bannerofaseason for Bantam Stars It was certainly a banner year for the South Delta Stars Bantam girls hockey team. Despite a limited roster after losing some players to various rep programs, the Stars captured the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association’s regular season and playoff titles at the “C” level. South Delta finished with a 14-4-2 record and 20 sportsmanship points. The success continued in the post-season with a 6-1-1 run, then a dominating 8-2 victory over Tri-Cities in the championship game.

The Stars did it with a pair of first-year goaltenders who proved to be fast learners. They also had a strong defensive unit in front of them. The team was bolstered with affiliate support from South Delta’s Pee Wee team throughout the season. The Stars roster featured goaltenders Olivia Griffiths and Seiko Murphy; captain Lauren Ethrington; assistants Lucy Green and Rachel Johnson; along with Ashley Westeringh, Ava Campbell, Nevada Johnson, Molly Hoffman,

South Delta Stars swept the regular season and playoff titles in PCAHA’s Bantam “C” Red Group. Sasha Spencer, Siya Johal and Taylor Katsube. The Pee Wee affiliates

included: Elli Thompson, Alexis Kamiya. Charlotte McLean, Jordyn Stewart

and Taylor Murrell. The head coach was Sean Johnson with help

from assistants Brad Etherington, TJ Johal and Colleen Katsube.

Delta pair help Canada earn Youth Olympics berth

A pair of Falcon Field Hockey alumni have helped Canada’s U18 men’s team secure a spot in next fall’s Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Rowan Childs and Brendan Guraliuk were key members of the Canadian team that finished third at the recent Youth Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Canada went 4-0 before dropping

a semi-final decision to Mexico. A dominating 6-0 win over Paraguay in the bronze medal match secured the trip to Argentina. “It’s an incredible achievement to qualify for the Youth Olympics. “We showed a lot of character coming back after the semi-final loss. I’m really proud of everyone on this team,” said head coach Geoff Matthews.

“Everybody played their part and we were able to put out very solid nine-player performances. It really showed on the last day, that we were well conditioned. We played our best game in the bronze medal match.” The players will now work with their provincial programs and at their National Training Centres in the months leading up to the Youth Olympic Games in October.

ADAMS, Lloyd William April 21, 1936 - March 26, 2018 It is with heavy hearts that we said goodbye to a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and good friend to many on March 26 at Delta Hospital due to complications of dementia. He leaves to mourn his ever-loving wife of 60 years, Irene and his children Linda (Paul), Bill (Michelle), Mary (Wes), Wayne (Meghan) & son-inlaw Walter, 9 grandchildren and 4 greatgrandchildren. He also leaves siblings Don, Ken, Norma, Dorothy and sister-in-law Mildred. Also many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Lloyd was born in Melville, Saskatchewan and grew up in Rapid City, Manitoba. He moved with Irene and their children to Tsawwassen in 1974. Lloyd was a very proud Korean War Veteran. He never missed a chance to let people know he had been in the Navy and that “All the Nice Girls Love a Sailor”. After the Navy he worked for IBM Canada for 30 years, then sold real estate for many years. The Royal Canadian Legion was very important to him, and he remained active as long as he was able.

Mom was on the executive of Vanc/Richmond/Delta Christian Women’s Club for many years and hosted Bible Studies in their home for 45 years. Mom was a fabulous cook and a superb hostess. Her brownies and cookies were famous with children of all ages. Mom was always busy crafting new creations. She served as a volunteer at Ladner’s Thrift Store until in her eighties and enjoyed the fellowship of Ladner Baptist Church. The Lord was her strength and her faith sustained her through life’s’ challenges. Mom’s life not only impacted her families’ lives but nephews, nieces and many others along her life’s journey.

It is with sadness yet rejoicing, that we share Eileen went home to Jesus after a long and full life. She was predeceased by Lloyd, her husband of 61 years. Eileen was born in Vancouver to parents Ernie and Freda Scott and was younger sister to brother Roy Scott (predeceased). She is survived by her three children, Jan (Warren), Dan (Julie) and Lorraine (Ray), six grandchildren, Lisa (Steve), Kathy (Brian), Lori (Sean), Kerri (Olav), Cindy (Tim) and Greg (Jana) and 18 amazing greatgrandchildren who she loved and enjoyed so much. Mom loved and prayed for each of her family every day.

A Celebration of Life for Eileen will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 4:00 pm at Ladner Baptist Church, 5624 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner, BC, with reception to follow.

First and foremost though his family was his number one priority. He loved all of them unconditionally. He relished visits or phone calls from every one, from eldest to youngest, but nothing made him happier than to be at family gatherings.
