Public to get say on casino Hearing for recently branded Cascades Casino Delta set for next Tuesday SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The casino proposed for Ladner, which will be the subject of a public hearing next week, finally has a name. Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Ltd. announced yesterday morning that the
$70-million complex proposed for the Delta Town & Country Inn site will be called Cascades Casino Delta. The branding announcement was made at the nearby Delta Chamber of Commerce office. Gateway also uses the Cascades brand for its Langley, Kamloops and Penticton casi-
nos. The first Cascades casino in Ontario will begin construction in Chatham-Kent this spring. The company, which operates 25 casinos across three provinces, notes that central to its success has been the development of proprietary casino and restaurant brands. “We look forward to bringing
this state of-the-art entertainment destination to this rapidly growing community,” said Gateway CEO Tony Santo. The public hearing for the rezoning application takes place on Tuesday, May 1 at 6 p.m. It will be held at the Ladner Community Centre. T&C INN: see Page 3
Delta drivers have been warned. In what is believed to be a first for policing in B.C., the Delta Police Department’s traffic unit will be regularly advising social media followers when and where traffic enforcement will be occurring. The first publicized enforcement effort began Thursday morning at the foot of Nordel Way in North Delta, which is the corridor with the most collisions in Delta, according to a top 10 list of city crash sites released by DPD last week. “Although Delta police and other forces occasionally publicize enforcement efforts, we don’t think any other police force in B.C. has committed to giving the public a heads up on a regular basis,” said S/Sgt. Ryan Hall. “We’ll be giving folks who follow us @DPDTraffic on Twitter an advance warning of enforcement efforts approximately once a week.” Hall acknowledges that some may find the move controversial, but adds the public should recognize traffic enforcement takes place every day of the week. “Part of the job of traffic officers is to ensure that the public is aware we’ll be out there – whether it’s CounterAttack on a summer long weekend, or doing a distracted driving blitz the first week of school,” he added.

Pot uncertainties abound Chief says police will face challenging times once marijuana is legalized SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m s i t .co m
It’s going to be legal in the coming months despite many unanswered questions. Delta police Chief Neil Dubord and special guests at a Delta Chamber of Commerce luncheon Tuesday outlined the plethora of uncertainties facing police and employers as recreational marijuana is set to become legal in Canada later this summer. Not saying whether he agrees with legalization, Dubord did explain what will be allowed, including being able to be in possession of up to 30 grams and being able to cultivate up to four plants at home. As far as medical pot, people can bring that to work as long as they have prescriptions. Those who use medical cannabis are even able to use it while on the job, as long as they don’t reach impairment, but it will be difficult for supervisors to identify if someone is stoned, warned Dubord. That will also be the case when someone comes to work having used recreational marijuana. Firm policies, training

that can make the supply of marijuana available for everyone,” he said. Matt Houghton, CEO of GroupHEALTH Benefit Solutions, discussed the uncertainties when it comes to medical marijuana and employee benefit plans, including whether employers will be able to ascertain what’s prescribed by health practitioners is reasonable for a condition. Various plans are already placing caps on the amount of money that can be used by employees for medical pot to prevent claims and premiums skyrocketing. He noted there’s been a “staggering” increase in the number of people with medical marijuana cards, a figure that jumped from 98,500 in September of 2016 to over 235,000 a year later. Plans attempting to not cover medical marijuana could face human rights complaints, he added. During the questionand answer session, Delta police Supt. Harj Sidhu reiterated some of the uncertainties, including whether employers can require employees be tested for pot if there’s a workplace accident.
and education, especially for prevention, will be extremely important, the chief advised. The same difficulty faces police when pulling over drivers suspected of being impaired on pot because there’s no device to measure impairment like is the case with alcohol. Drivers suspected of being stoned would have to take a form of field sobriety test and, if there’s enough probable cause, a subsequent blood
test. However, there are no hard numbers like alcohol to declare when a person is impaired on pot. Marijuana can be absorbed at different rates and affect individuals differently, making it all the more challenging for police, while leaving results open for interpretation by defence lawyers. Dubord pointed to what’s been happening in Colorado where pot is
legal and there are now 424 marijuana stores. Fatal motor vehicle accidents have increased by 88 per cent while workplace injuries are up around nine per cent. The police chief said monitoring home grows will also be extremely difficult. “We disagree that there should be home grows. We think that there are many, many facilities that do a very professional job
and meeting space, while the casino is to have 500 slot machines, 24 gaming tables and up to six e-tables. After six months, a review would take place but any substantial change to the gaming equation would need city approval. The casino would be considerably smaller than Richmond’s River Rock Casino Resort, which has 1,267 slot machines and 112 table games.
Richmond has registered strong opposition to the proposed Delta facility. The B.C. Lottery Corporation estimates revenue coming to Delta will be at the top end of its initial $1.5 million to $3 million annual projection. Issues raised by those opposed include traffic, congestion problem gambling, an increase in crime and loss of the tennis bubble.
Gateway is using the Cascades brand for its proposed Delta casino.
T&C Inn would be torn down to make way for casino
CONTINUED from Page 1 If the proposal receives approval, the current 49-room hotel would be torn down this summer to make way for the new complex that would be scheduled to open in 2020. Shato Holdings owner Ron Toigo would continue to own the site and lease it to Gateway. The complex would include a hotel of 116 to 124 rooms, restaurants

Good news budget gets approval from trustees After years of cuts, board enjoys slight surplus SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It’s a good news budget despite not restoring what’s previously been lost. That was the view offered from Delta board of education trustees Tuesday after approving next year’s operating budget which has a slight surplus, a sharp contrast from deficits in the millions that had been the norm for years. “We’re not getting back what we’ve lost, we’re just holding the line,” said trustee Val Windsor. The latest budget will not see any staffing cuts. What’s more, unlike previous years, the district will be adding staff, including eight full-time equivalent teaching positions as well as more than $500,000 in educational supports, which could include education assistants, counsellors or psychologists. Trustee Fabian Milat said after witnessing 16 years of cuts, this can be
considered a good news budget. He noted Delta leads all districts as far as instructional time while being at the lower end when it comes to administration costs.
We’re not getting back what we’ve lost, we’re just holding the line. VAL WINDSOR
Trustee Dale Saip said in all his years of having to make tough budget decision, the board has never spent less than a previous year. “I think it’s really important to recognize that public education is a balance between what we would ideally like for our children and what we can afford,” Saip said. Trustee Nick Kanakos said he’s concerned the school district continues
to dip into its reserves to help balance the books, while the employer payroll health tax will place an added cost. Trustee Rhiannon Bennett said she’s glad maintenance staffing levels will finally be upgraded slightly after taking hits. “It’s a different feeling around the board table, not wondering if we are cutting our right foot or our left foot off,” she said. Trustees, meanwhile, are concerned about the province’s review of the funding allocation model, which could end up rewarding some districts at the expense of others. Chair Laura Dixon will be submitting a motion at this weekend’s B.C. School Trustees Association assembly calling on the province to give boards and parent groups an opportunity for additional input.

Ceremony in Rotary Park to mark Day of Mourning IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
One hundred and fiftyeight B.C. workers died from a workplace injury or disease last year. It’s a staggering number that no one wants to see repeated, which is why unions and the labour force are hoping to change those statistics through education and awareness. This Saturday has been designated the Day of Mourning across Canada. Locally, CUPE Local 454 is hosting a ceremony, open to the public, at Rotary Park next to Delta City Hall in Ladner at 10:45 a.m. At Monday’s Delta council meeting, civic politicians welcomed Lori Mayhew and Aimee Cho from the New Westminster & District Labour Council who spoke about the Day of Mourning and this year’s themes. Cho said the purpose of the Day of Mourning is two-fold: to remember workers killed and injured on the job and to prevent future injuries through education.
Last year, 158 B.C. workers died from a workplace injury or disease. Now, families and communities are left to mourn. Let’s make our workplaces healthy and safe.
Saturday, April 28
dayofmourning.bc.ca
She said unions are leading the way in education and prevention, including a BC Federation of Labour centre that has helped thousands of workers and companies know their rights and responsibilities for workplace safety. Cho added that this year BC Fed has joined with the BCTF, CUPE BC and WorkSafe BC in a Day of Mourning schools project. “Many students and young people don’t know the dangers they may face at work or their rights as workers. As a con-
sequence, young workers are the most vulnerable group in the workforce and they are statistically more likely to suffer injury or death in the workplace,” she said. This year the issue of workplace violence and harassment is also being highlighted during Day of Mourning. The Canadian Labour Congress has launched a campaign to bring awareness to the fact many workers are at risk of violence and could suffer bullying and harassment while at work. Mayhew said education is critical to identifying and preventing violence in the workplace. “Violence prevention programs must be developed as part of the overall workplace health and safety program,” Mayhew said. “Employers, workers and unions all have a role to play in coming together to make workplaces safe and free from violence.”

TED MURPHY
t was the summer of 1987 and the new track at South Delta Secondary was being hailed as a “faaaaaantastic” facility by none other than Bill Vander Zalm. The premier of the day had made his way out to the Tsawwassen high school for the opening ceremonies of the B.C. Summer Games and, as he was prone to do, was gushing, this time about the amenities which included a new rubberized surface for the running track. The Zalm was correct as the new track was not only a shiny centerpiece for that week of athletic competition but served as the most enduring legacy of those Summer Games. Fast-forward three decades, however, and that same track had fallen into such disrepair that the school district ripped it up this week because it posed a safety hazard for those who still dared to use it. It’s hard to quibble with the preemptive move, and there’s certainly no argument here with board of education chair Laura Dixon’s characterization that painting lines on the asphalt underneath the now-removed rubber isn’t an ideal situation. The problem is that ripping it up was the easy part; finding the money to replace it will be the real challenge. Even though the board of education didn’t have to do the usual hack and slash job to its budget this spring, it’s still in no financial position to undertake this or other needed sports amenity upgrades, an area of the school system that has quite literally been neglected for decades. I also don’t see a riding that elected a Liberal MLA getting much love from a NDP provincial government and I’m not sure how much bang a private partner would get from being involved. That leaves the feds (hello, cabinet minister Carla Qualtrough) and the City of Delta, which up to this point has been reluctant to fund initiatives on school district property given it has its own ever-growing wish list of parks and recreation projects, to step up. I could see Delta coming to the table this time because there isn’t a running track in any city park and a track is an amenity that would be used by the wider community, but there’s no way city hall is footing the whole bill. That means others are going to have to get involved or that once “faaaaaantastic” facility will be little more than a circular sidewalk.
Kid farmers learn what their older counterparts endure
F
inally a legitimate stretch of warm, dry weather! My Project Pickle young farmers are ecstatic that things will speed up a little now and I even brought the hose to out begin our spring long ritual of water fights to keep their fun meters on high. The kids are learning about the obstacles facing small-scale agriculture but are understandably frustrated with the slow growth in a cold and wet early spring. These are small-scale problems that we discuss and I always tell the kids we are often taking risks in our planting and learn what works best and when. We can learn from our failures. Up the valley, potato and strawberry farmers have started their seasons and just this week local farmers are getting into the fields after a very slow start. Farming is fraught with difficulty and when you only have so much time but often have way too much to do, it can be a stressful time indeed. There are plenty of issues to work through and, as always, Mother Nature is ultimately in charge. The difficulties of farming have given cause in Delta and elsewhere for farmers to consider politics a means to represent their brethren and the community as a whole so that critical issues

around land use and food production can ensure proper stewardship of the land and all that it provides. Delta has a rich history of farmers who moved in to politics to help bring important food and farming issues to the forefront. The Savage family, who immigrated to Delta in 1870, is one of the founding farming families. John Savage was an alderman in Delta before being elected to represent Delta as MLA and a respected minister of agriculture in the legislature. Savage was instrumental in securing provincial funding for crucial irrigation infrastructure for farmers when the South Fraser Perimeter Road was built. John L. Guichon was a farmer and councillor from 1919-1936 and again from 1939-1950. Doug Husband from the pioneering
Pybus family was elected to council five times before serving one term as mayor of Delta. The Roddick family had served the farming community in Delta for years with its feed and supply business and Val Roddick was a two-term MLA and instrumental in developing the British Columbia Agriculture Plan with the former Liberal government. Current Delta South MLA Ian Paton still lives on the family farm. He is also a three-term councillor in Delta and is currently chair of the Delta Agricultural Advisory Committee and is the official Opposition critic for agriculture in the legislature. Ian Paton Sr. was a dairy and forage farmer and was chairman of the Agricultural Land Commission. Our farming community is a strong and closely knit group of people who care deeply about their livelihoods and where they live. They understand a myriad of local issues that many of us simply overlook or take for granted. They are the hard working, loyal and dedicated people who have helped to build the foundation of our great city and I feel privileged to know many of them. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food. He is a Jamie Oliver Food Revolution ambassador.

Horse and rider don’t feel welcome
Editor: What happened to our wonderful welcoming farm community here in Ladner? Used to be, not even 10 years ago, I could hop on my horse, head out the driveway and go for a lovely ride along the dike. Even made front page of the Optimist once, with Westshore Terminals and the ferry terminal in the background on a beautiful spring morning. Not anymore. Signs are
up on TFN lands, “Horses not allowed,” so I turned the other direction to have the white vehicles come out of the CN yard to say that “if I crossed the tracks with my horse, I would be charged with trespassing.” I understand there are safety issues but neither I, nor my horse, want to die, so we would have crossed carefully to enjoy the dike on the other side. When I contacted TFN, they stated their lawyers had indicated it was a liability issue if
we rode on their dike. So, I could access the dike on the east side of Ladner, on my horse via the agricultural bridge if only there was a wide enough verge so that I could safely travel from the corner of 28th Avenue and 53rd Street along 28th Avenue until it turns at 56th Street. These impatient mall visitors have no regard for horses and have no idea how to use caution and common sense when
passing horses and presently this is far too narrow and not safe. I see there are plans to add a pedestrian walkway along this stretch “as part of future roadway upgrade project.” Please can it be sooner rather than later. Unless I hook up the trailer, load up, start the truck and head out somewhere, as it is now on the west side of Ladner, there is no place for us to go riding. Terrie LaPorte
Islands would speed up traffic and reduce crashes Editor: Re: Police focus on top crash sites, April 20 It is important that the police work to reduce traffic accidents but, in my mind, and more to the point, road planning and the design of intersections is an equally viable way to reduce accidents.
I travel a lot in Europe and see the huge benefit of large traffic islands in speeding up traffic flow and reducing accidents. I do not mean the tiddly islands installed here and there, but major traffic installations hundreds of metres across and sized for the maximum traffic
flows anticipated. You slow down for them but keep moving. The size allows you to filter over to your exit lane without stopping. Furthermore, when there are accidents they are of the side-swipe variety, not the more dangerous T-bone or head-on type. I hope the Delta plan-
ners read this. When I add up the hours I’ve spent waiting for lights to change at 56th Street and Highway 17 and Ladner Trunk Road and Highway 17A, I cannot understand why traffic islands are not installed. There is even the available land at both locations. Selwyn Dodd
Neighbourhood road has been turned into speedway Editor: I am at a loss for words to express my anger — and that of my neighbours — for the ongoing traffic situation that I know threatens life on 53A Street between 12th and 16th avenues in Tsawwassen. This stretch of what should be a quiet neigh-
bourhood street has become a 24/7 speedway. I don’t have the equipment to clock km/h, but I know that Tsawwassen CoPS, who position themselves outside my home from time to time, could confirm that vehicles are often travelling at 100 km/h in this 50 km/h
zone. I know this stretch is a shortcut to 56th Street from the west side of the community. No lights, no ongoing policing — it’s an invitation for some to go for it. I also know this is a chosen route for emergency vehicles and traditional

Annual wildlife spectacle in Delta is under threat
Editor: This weekend thousands of shorebirds are migrating from Central and South America to breeding areas in the Arctic tundra. The Fraser River estuary mud flats are the fivestar B&B stopover on the Pacific Flyway for these global migrants. They rest here for a few days and feast on vital biofilm on the mudflats. Re-fueled they can then continue their flight north. Roberts Bank is front and centre of the estuary habitat that supports these international migrants. Forty years ago, an expert review panel recognized this. It said port expansion should not occur on Roberts Bank because of the potential impacts on fish and wildlife. However, the port went ahead in 1980s and 1990s with its expansion.
Meanwhile, the spring numbers of shorebirds on Roberts Bank declined 80 per cent between 1994 and 2004. The port ignored requests to protect the environment (e.g. it was told to bury overhead wires that kill migrants as they cross the causeway). It was ordered to do a cumulative impact assessment of port development on Roberts Bank. Then Deltaport was added so the port has all the expansion that was rejected in 1979. And now it wants to build another port — Terminal 2. The Roberts Bank ecosystem is under grave threat. How much longer will the joy of the globetrotting shorebirds (peeps) be seen and heard in Delta? Come and see them this Saturday at 3 p.m. on Brunswick Point. Mary Taitt
Absolute power not a good thing

‘Rack’ fashion show raises over $5,000 for charity
The Urban Rack’s annual Spring Awakening fashion show raised over $5,000 for the Canucks Autism Network earlier this month. “It was a great event, we had a lot of support from local merchants and businesses,” said Urban Rack owner Caylea Burch. “I can’t thank enough all who came, participated, donated and helped out.” The fashion show showcased the store’s spring styles, noted Burch, adding the event enjoyed a large turnout. A silent auction was held and surprise swag bags were sold by donation in addition to the fashion show. Guests enjoyed snacks and beverages along with tunes provided by a DJ. The Canucks Autism Network does some amazing work in our communities, said Burch, adding the organization is “near and

Say hello to Lorenzo
Lorenzo is a 9 year old chihuahua that was originally adopted from us last April, but due to changes within the family he has come back to us. Please hold all judgement comments to yourself. Lorenzo is house trained and cuddles are his favourite thing ever! However this little man does need a home that is going to give him strict rules to follow. He has a fear of men so if there is a male in the home they would need to be patient and willing to help him trust. Currently a home without children is best suited for Lorenzo until we can get to know him again. As with all of our dogs he is up to date on his shots and neutered. If you are interested in helping this cuddle monster please email us at pbandchi@gmail.com or submit an application through our website www.pbandchi.com

Trades & Technical Career Fair
Fair exposes students to career in the trades
Secondary students in the Delta School District will descend on Sungod Recreation Centre next week for the sixth annual Delta Trades and Technical Career Fair. Set for Thursday, May 3, the free event provides an opportunity for students, parents and the public to explore trades and technical careers through handson, interactive exhibits, demonstrations and talking directly with experts in their fields. In addition to the many exhibits, a stage will feature a variety of presentations. Mayor Lois Jackson came up with the idea for the city to organize such an event, saying it’s important for young people today to know there are many options to a successful career and they don’t necessarily need to attend university to achieve their dreams. The main event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a separate post-secondary recruiting event in the rec-

Last year’s event attracted approximately 3,500 people, which included close to 2,500 students, mainly from the Delta School District. Similar to previous years, this year the city is anticipating more than 70 exhibits, including postsecondary institutions, local businesses, industry organizations and more.
Exhibits include masonry, welding, aerospace, plumbing, electrical, baking, pastry arts, auto collision, mechatronics and much more. The fair is organized by the city in partnership with the school district, Vancouver Community College, BCIT, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, local employers and associations. For a full list of confirmed exhibitors, see the event website at www. delta.ca/careerfair.
Mayor Lois E. Jackson and Delta Council invite you to explore trades and technical careers through hands-on and interactive exhibits on May 3.

We all wear labels. Good labels (husband, wife, athlete, teacher); bad labels (cheater, broke, no good failure). Many of these labels we can get from as early as we can walk, from parents, teachers and friends. These labels often determine how we view ourselves. They influence how we view the people around us and how we view the world. Labels create expectation or lack of expectation. God wants to label you according to the way He designed you. But what if we’ve been mislabeled? Being mislabeled causes problems. It locks you in and locks opportunity out. It clouds your vision

Please take a moment of silence to reflect on these fallen workers on this day.

A team that came last in Quiz Night 5 turned its fortunes around and won the sixth edition of the KinVillage Quiz Night last Saturday in Tsawwassen. In a closely fought contest the “Older Butwiser” team of Stephen Corber (left), Esmée Whitaker, Kathy Mahood and Michael Ernest managed to win by one point over “The Roses.” Fifteen teams entered the now regular quiz and answered 10 rounds of questions on everything from movies and musicals to history and geography. The next quiz is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15.
Get in touch with nature by volunteering at Earthwise
Discover how you can get in touch with nature while giving back to your community when the Earthwise Society hosts an open house for potential volunteers next week. It’s set for Tuesday, May 1 from 7 to 8 p.m. Mingle with current volunteers and staff over coffee and refreshments and enjoy a brief presentation about Earthwise Society and the many ways you can get involved. There will also be a questionand-answer session. Earthwise focuses on a wide range of community sustainability issues, including environmental awareness and education, food security and mental health. “From nature we know that each individual has an important role to
play in the ecosystem and that’s how it works with our volunteers too,” says Earthwise executive director Patricia Fleming. “Whether you simply want to pull weeds for the therapeutic value of being outside and escaping modern day stresses, or you have time on your hands to take ownership of a big project, there is a niche place here for you.” Earthwise offers several rewarding volunteer training programs. It’s well known that spending time outdoors can ease stress, anxiety and depression while increasing motivation and well-being. Volunteers will have access to mentor training opportunities in horticultural therapy, which focuses on harnessing the intrinsic healing
power of nature and gardening to promote mental health. If growing food is your interest, the Earthwise Farm Work and Learn program offers volunteer training in farming and agriculture. This is an intensive, hands-on program aimed at those who may want to become future farmers or gain a deeper connection with our food system. New this year, Earthwise has developed a unique garden training workshop series that is ideal for those who are passionate about gardening and would like to broaden their knowledge. For more on volunteering or to RSVP for the open house, email info@ earthwisesociety.bc.ca or call 604-946-9828.

Tsawwassen’s Wayne Cope has doubled the reward for solving the puzzle found in his book, Vancouver Blue: A Life Against Crime, to 10 Canadian one-ounce silver coins. The retired police officer released the book, which takes a look back at his time in law enforcement, in 2015. The puzzle is: A (15, 6) B+B ACET, DRLA, ACVI, BCFB, ECXZ, BMCE, AAUE, EAYT, ABIM, EQDQ At a Writer’s Night event at the Vancouver Public Library last week he offered the clue, “The puzzle is in fact, a book cipher, if I wanted assistance in solving a book cipher I would ask the world’s greatest consulting detective (spoiler, it’s not me).” Cope had already hinted that a clue to solving the puzzle is in the book itself. To submit an answer to the puzzle, email vancouverblueenigmatic@gmail. com.

The Delta Islanders have a living legend onboard to help get them contending again in the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League. Coming off a difficult 4-17 campaign, Kyle Goundrey had seen enough to try and change the culture within a core of players, dating back to the two years he also ran the Islanders former intermediate “A” program. He turned to Canadian Lacrosse Hall-of-Famer Andy Ogilvie to not only join him behind the bench but also share the head coaching duties. Ogivlie was known as a hardnosed defender who enjoyed a decorated career in the National Lacrosse League and Western Lacrosse Association, winning three Mann Cups. His last one in 2001 earned him playoff MVP honours with the Coquitlam Adanacs. The 53-year-old Peterborough native also won a pair of Minto Cup national junior “A” championships with his hometown Lakers before taking his career out west.

“Obviously he is a legend but also I have been with these guys for a few years and we just needed a change,” explained Goundrey. “Just in discipline and a change in attitude of everything. What we had done hadn’t been working. You can’t just keep doing the same thing and expect to win.” Ogilvie and Goundrey worked together as part of the WLA Adanacs coaching staff back in 2009. Now they are re-united to work with some promising talent that includes a 2000-age group that produced a midget A1 provincial title in 2016. Training camp is heading into the homestretch with the team’s final pre-season game on Saturday when the Langley Thunder visit the Ladner Leisure Centre at 7 p.m. A week later, the Port Coquitlam Saints are in town for the regular season opener. Wednesday night was the first time the coaches had an opportunity to implement systems after the roster was pared down to a more workable number. More cuts are coming in the days ahead. It was no surprise to see Ogilvie looking after the defensive end
of the floor while Goundrey, a high-scoring talent during his decorated career, is in charge of the offence. “I am enjoying the attitude for sure. These guys are coming here and working hard, they’re listening to what we we say and I am getting no attitude back,” said Ogilvie who had spent the past two seasons on the WLA Thunder’s coaching staff. “Up to this point, we had been doing scrimmaging and this is the first night working on game strategy. There must have been 30 defenceman at one point. I relied on Kyle a lot for his opinion as I was seeing these guys for the first time. I have asked for a lot of help so far.” Ogilvie’s arrival coincides with a major change in the junior age structure. B.C. Lacrosse voted in the off-season to drop Intermediate (Grades 11-12) entirely, putting the province on par with the rest of the country. Junior is now a five-year division and the new Junior ‘B’ tier one league has essentially replaced Intermediate ‘A’ as the next highest tier.
The shift certainly led to a lot of bodies at training camp and coaches with an open mind when it comes to finalizing the roster. Jake Cantlon, Haiden Dickson, Mark Yingling and Max Stalling are four key players from the 2000 group who will be full-time junior “A” players this season. “You have to remember the junior ‘A” team is the same age as wherever they are going to end up going,” added Goundrey. That’s one thing we try to stress to their parents who don’t want their boy playing junior ‘A’ yet. The age group doesn’t change just the skill level. “If they are junior ‘A’ calibre then here is where they are going to play.” Boxla Bits… Stephen Alexander, who worked with many of the 2000 and 2001 born players coming up through Delta Lacrosse’s minor system, is now head coach of the new junior “B” tier one team. The Islanders are also flooring a team at the Junior “B” tier two level which is the West Coast Junior Lacrosse League, with Junior “B” tier three.

Rowers making an impression at national and world levels
Tracy Van Asseldonk and Richard Stout are the most recent members to bring honours to Delta Deas Rowing Club (DDRC) Back in January, Van Asseldonk was carded as a PR1 developing para athlete with Rowing Canada Aviron. A month later, Stout won a silver medal in his age category (65+) at the World Indoor Rowing Competition (WIRC) in Alexandria, Virginia. Van Asseldonk, 33, grew up in the Lower Mainland and has been rowing with DDRC since 2014 — working with coach Julie Stevens, who pioneered the Para-rowing program in Delta. Her carded status gives her an additional opportunity to workout at the National Training Centre located at Elk Lake in Victoria. She will also receive personalized guidance from national program experts in nutrition, strength and conditioning, biomechanics, sport medicine and sport psychology. Para-Rowing was added to the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing. At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, Canada won its first medal — a bronze in the PR3 Mixed Coxed Four. There are three classifications in ParaRowing - PR1 (Arms and Shoulders), PR2 (Trunk and Arms), PR3 (Legs, Trunk and Arms). “Since the day I started, the people at DDRC have always made rowing an inclusive sport and I would encourage anyone, disability or not, to come give it a try!” said Van Asseldonk. Stout, 66, has a long history in the sport beginning in the mid 1970s, when he learned to row on the Thames River as an undergraduate at London University. He moved to Canada in 1982 and to Ladner in 2014, when he joined DDRC. The World Indoor Rowing Competition in Virginia included competitors from 36 countries. Races were held

Stout beat a pre-established qualification time at a regional event in Seattle, then competed in the finals two weeks later where he finished just two seconds behind a competitor from Oslo, Norway to reach the podium. He promised he would be back next year to go for gold. DDRC operates out of the Boathouse in Deas Island Park. The club is a member in good standing of Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) and competes in RCA sanctioned events, as well as other events sponsored by area high schools and rowing clubs.

In loving memory of our dear friend Marilyn Joan High May 18, 1944 - April 26, 2017 “True friendship is as deep as the ocean and as constant as the tides.” Marilyn, we celebrate today in the spirit of what an amazing person you were to everyone of us. Your special blend of love and loyalty created a bond so strong amongst us, we feel ourselves to be our own unique family. Woven together through unconditional love for you.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian Leong, surrounded by the love of his family. Predeceased by his father Rex, mother Mae and son Jeremy. Brian is survived by his wife Susan, son Greg, daughter-in-law Cherie, two beloved grandchildren, Nicholas and Lauren and many relatives. Brian will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. A kind, caring and loyal friend. The family will hold a private service and a Celebration of Brian’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donation to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. Brian is our hero and he will be in our hearts forever. Condolences can be offered at www.Deltafuneral.ca Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
MAXWELL, Helen 1927 - 2018 Helen Celeste Maxwell died April 19, 2018 at age 90. She is survived by her brother Jack Bradshaw of Williams Lake; her three sons Alvan (Dell) (Mayne Island), Larry (Ladner), and Mick (Lillooet). Also survived by her beloved grand-daughter Autumn (Victoria). She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Harry, in 1992 and her brothers Laurie and Don. She was a resident of Ladner and the area from 1936 to the present. She was a lifetime member and Secretary Treasurer of the Ladies Auxillary to the Royal Canadian Legion. In her lifetime she was known as a seamstress of great skill, a curler, a bowler, a valued friend and advocate. She was trusted with the financial affairs of many election campaigns and community organizations. She was the Secretary Treasurer of Ladner Museum and Meals on Wheels for 40 years. A Celebration of Life will be held at Fisherman’s Hall from 1PM to 3PM Saturday, May 5. Donations may be sent to any organization attempting to fix the devastation of dementia in any form.
“Highness”, you infused our lives daily with joy, fun, practical jokes, devotion, compassion, and a desire to help others. You could “see” a person’s potential and would do what you could to support them to full realization. You have your grandmother’s gifts of second sight and shared your insights with only those close to you. We are the lucky ones. Most importantly you taught us that a true friend does not run when the going gets tough. And it got tough. Very tough. And our little family did not run. We rallied together. Your love of horses and animals was legendary. That was clear in your relationship with tiny Macy, who came to you through SPCA foster care, having 3 legs and had been left on the road as a hit and run. Courageously, you gathered strength to give of self, cared and nurtured Macy’s body and spirit back to life, while you were losing yours. “The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it” - Henry David Thoreau We wanted to thank you for the amount of life you gave us. Your legacy lives on through the woven tapestry of our little family, sharing stories and memories with true appreciation for all that we have. Just for today. Because it could be gone tomorrow. Godspeed my friend. Love, Harry and Sue (Emma, Meaghan) Harvey (Bart) Dave and Margaret, Brian and Amy (Stephanie, Devon) Richard G, Heather, Terry and Macy.
ALLEN, Donald Barclay 1931 - 2018 Captain Don Allen passed away peacefully on April 20th. He waited until his 61st wedding anniversary to say goodbye. Don joined Canadian Pacific in 1955 as a pilot and retired in 1983. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, his children Deb (Bill), Mike (Susanne), Barb (Brian), six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He always travelled “From here to there with Flare”. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 11:00 am at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner, BC with a reception to follow. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
