Officer pulls youth from mud in Bay Boy stuck waist deep in mud about 100 metres from shore IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Sometimes you have to get down and dirty to help someone in your community. That was certainly the case last Saturday when a Delta police officer rescued a young person from a muddy predicament in Boundary Bay. According to DPD, beachgoers and residents alerted police to a youth stuck in quicksandlike mud around noon near 12th Avenue and Boundary Bay Road. Police say the youth was approximately 100 metres from shore when he sank up to his waist and became stuck. “He literally could not move, and was pretty upset,” said Const. Derek Gallamore, who responded to the call. “People nearby the boy had a rope, but the challenge was to figure out how to help this kid without getting stuck

myself.” Gallamore found a long piece of driftwood to use as a base and then tossed the rope out to the boy, instructing him to tie the rope around his waist. “Then I told him to push on the long piece of driftwood as I pulled the rope,” added Gallamore. “Unfortunately the area was like quicksand. I also sank to my knees at one point. But I got myself clear and then proceeded to pull him out.” The boy’s father called Gallamore later that day to thank him for rescuing his son. “We’re very glad this incident had a happy ending,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. “We want to remind the public that there are a number of very deep muddy areas that can be like quicksand in various locations in Boundary Bay. The safest area to explore the tidal flats is in front of Centennial Beach.”

Delta currently isn’t on a flood alert, but its emergency operations centre is poised to open. Persistent warmer than normal temperatures across B.C. over the past three weeks have led to a much earlier than normal runoff period for the Fraser River and many of the gauge locations along the river are at or above historic flows for early in the freshet season. The city’s engineering department notes that Delta, for now at least, is not affected and there is no localized flooding. Acting engineering director Hugh Fraser told the Optimist the keys for Delta will be the velocity and debris in the lower Fraser.

FILE PHOTO

Warmer than normal temperatures have led to an earlier runoff and higher water levels. “Downstream of the Alex Fraser Bridge it’s more governed by the tidal levels than it is by the Fraser River flow levels. When we get to the mouth of the Fraser, it’s very wide and there’s many channels, and from a water level perspective, it’s not a problem unless we get a high tide combined with

the freshet flow. We’re monitoring the levels on a daily basis now and looking at the tide level combined with the river flow, and the province is giving us daily updates,” explained Fraser. “The main issues are the river velocities and they’re much higher now,” Fraser said Wednesday. “Once

we reach six metres at the Mission Gauge, we’ll open our emergency operations centre. Today we’re at about 5.6, 5.7 metres. Probably tomorrow we’ll hit it, or Friday. “If we get significant velocities, we could have erosions at selected areas and that’s what we need to keep an eye on, as well as

a lot of debris in the river, and those are the critical issues for us right now. The water level is currently in an acceptable range and our dikes are providing sufficient freeboard.” In a report to Delta council, Fraser notes that due to the forecast for warm temperatures, the river flow is projected to increase over the next two weeks and the flood risk will likely remain though mid-June. Dike inspections have taken place. Boaters are advised to be extra careful when travelling on the Fraser River due to the higher water velocities and debris. Metro Vancouver placed Barnston Island, which is further up river, on an evacuation alert earlier this week in anticipation of rising flood waters.

Report finds safety precautions not followed in rail accident

Member of track work crew seriously injured at Roberts Bank IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Inadequate safety training contributed to an employee injury at Roberts Bank in December 2016, a Transportation Safety Board (TSB) investigation has revealed. According to a TSB report released Monday morning, the investigation found the conductor’s instruction to the locomotive engineer to stop was not made in time. Deficiencies with the use of safety watch protection by the track workers were also identified in the investigation. Safety watch is a form

of track protection that requires one of the members of a track work crew to be assigned with the sole task of continuously monitoring the work site for oncoming trains or other on-track equipment. In this occurrence, neither of the track workers was solely performing the duties of safety watch, noted the TSB report. “The track workers had not been adequately trained in its use and did not have an accurate understanding of how to apply such protection,” stated the report. “In addition, as the use of safety watch and the associated processes were

not specifically audited, the inadequate application of this form of track worker protection was not apparent.” On Dec. 18, 2016, a Toronto Terminals Railway locomotive engineer and a conductor were shoving 66 empty intermodal platforms onto the east leg track at the Roberts Bank yard. The conductor was driving a vehicle beside the lead platform while providing instructions to the locomotive engineer who was positioned at the opposite end of the movement. At the same time, two track workers employed by a track maintenance con-

tractor were clearing snow from a switch on the same track. As the movement approached the switch, the conductor saw the workers and activated the oscillating beacon on top of the vehicle to alert them to the approaching movement. When no reaction was observed, the conductor attempted to sound the vehicle’s horn, but it was inoperative. The conductor then instructed the locomotive engineer to stop the movement. However, the movement was unable to stop before the leading platform struck and seriously injured one of the track workers.

Abbotsford man is charged with robbery and assault after incident in Tsawwassen IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

An Abbotsford man is facing three charges in connection to an alleged robbery and assault in Tsawwassen Monday night. Delta police were called to the 1500-block of 56th Street around 8 p.m. after a man was found on the sidewalk with non-life threatening injuries. “Investigation revealed the victim knew the identity of the suspect, who

allegedly attacked him with a metal pipe and bear spray, and robbed him of his phone, wallet and other personal items,” said Delta police public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. “Police quickly determined a likely location of the suspect nearby, and were able to contain the area while waiting for appropriate authority to search the dwelling. The suspect was located inside the dwelling, and was arrested.” Lucas William Logan,

31, appeared in provincial court Tuesday morning. He has been charged with robbery, assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm. A woman was also arrested at the scene, but has not been charged. “The victim and suspect were known to each other,” added Leykauf. “Our officers want to thank the members of the public who called police to alert them to this incident, and for the public’s cooperation in staying back and

Cris Leykauf allowing officers to safely do their jobs.”

When her cat Max recently stopped eating, drinking and cuddling, Rankin took him to the vet thinking something could be wrong. “They thought he might have a blockage, so they took an X-ray and they found two BB pellets in him,” Rankin recalled. “Clearly someone shot him because there is no other way for the pellets to get into his body.” She said she has no idea when Max was shot. “It could have been last month or last week because there was nothing obvious – no signs of distress,” she said. “I was really upset that someone

aying more but getting less is generally thought to be a bad deal, but you can seemingly get away with it if it’s in the name of preserving our natural resources. Or if you’re government. Or both. Every spring we’re urged by the powers that be in our region to conserve water in order so the taps don’t run dry in the summer and every year we dutifully do our part, yet it looks like we’re getting soaked in the process. A few years ago we were able to water our lawns in the mornings and the evenings, albeit only on three days of the week. At some point along the way, summertime restrictions were tightened and evening sprinkling was eliminated due to heavier water usage at that time of the day, leaving us just three mornings in which to pull out the sprinkler. This year we’ve lost one of those mornings, so we’re down to just two opportunities each week. The restrictions are also coming into effect earlier than had been the case, the usual June 1 start date clawed back to mid-May and, then just this year, May 1. With an extra month of regulations and weekly sprinkling opportunities whittled from six down to two, you’d think the additional water that’s being conserved would reflect favourably on our annual utility bills, but that hasn’t been the case. This year’s flat rate utility bill checked in at $1,060, more than half of which goes toward water. In fact, the $25 increase to the 2018 utility bill was primarily attributable to a $28 hike in water costs (sewer was up $6 and solid waste was down $9). Our utility bills have been rising at an alarming rate, up a whopping 87 per cent over the last dozen years, an annual increase of more than seven per cent, which far outstrips the rate of inflation in any of those years. To be fair, there were some costly water system upgrades that are now complete, but the bottom line is customers have less access but are paying more, which is a model that would bankrupt any private business that had the audacity to pull such a stunt. I recognize there’s a need to conserve and that rationing is far cheaper than costly infrastructure upgrades, so I’m not suggesting we have a right to waste water, but we shouldn’t be squandering money either.

Former top bureaucrat comes with a wealth of experience

H

e has been around politicians for most of his working life and now he is bidding to become one. We have learned this week that Delta’s former chief administrative officer George Harvie will be running for mayor this October. He has been Delta’s top bureaucrat for the past 18 years and has previously held a number of administrative jobs over 30 years with the city of Burnaby. Harvie and the bureaucratic staff of Delta have not had an easy go of it over the years. Keeping the mayor and council informed of the many issues we face as Deltans has not been simple. We have had our share of major challenges that have at times divided our communities. I know that we can’t all agree on every issue that comes before council but at the end of the day, our local politicians have been able to make sound and reasonable decisions based on the facts provided by Harvie and his staff and the many departments within city hall. Stickhandling through the myriad of complexities to run a city with the many issues we face is quite the challenge and certainly

Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER

Harvie knows the ins and outs of Delta better than anyone else. I was happy to hear that former Delta fire chief Dan Copeland will be running on the Achieving for Delta slate as well. In my last column I wrote about the long legacy of farmers in our community who have turned to politics to ensure that land use and food production issues are properly addressed. I am very happy to hear that Alicia Guichon will be running on the Achieving for Delta slate as well. The 29-year-old, fifth generation farmer would be a good choice to represent youth and the farming community this fall when MLA Ian Paton’s council term expires. If you live in Delta, chances are you have bought corn from

Alicia and her sister Danielle at the Arthur Drive stand they operated for many years. If not there, then maybe at the Ladner Village Market where they have sold their produce for 17 years. If you have not been to the Backroads Farm Market you should check it out. This will be the fifth year of operation for this impressive local business. Alicia is a credible young candidate who was recently nominated as vice president of the Delta Farmers’ Institute. She knows the farming community well and would be a good representative for them. Alicia is also a mentor to the Farm Roots program and a living example for the young student farmers that there are valuable careers out there for young people who are interested in farming and the food economy. Alicia’s great uncle John Guichon was a farmer who served on Delta council for 28 years. There will be other candidates on the Achieving for Delta slate but from what I can see so far, it looks like a good balance. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food. He is a Jamie Oliver Food Revolution ambassador.

Boundary Bay dike is not off-leash park for dogs

Editor: What a beautiful morning it was on Mother’s Day. I headed down to the dike at the foot of 72nd Street for a nice walk with my two puppies, both under 18 months old. We walked to our usual spot and sat down on a log. I heard a man yelling frantically as he was running behind his dog, a schnauzer, that was running our way. “Watch out! Pick up your dogs, my dog is not good with other dogs!” I looked left to see this aggressive dog sputtering and growling as he lunged towards us. I tried to grab my puppies up into my arms but the schnauzer was already at my heels, lunging at us fully intent on biting us. My dogs were on leash, but because I was sitting down on the log I was helpless and all that I could do in the split second that I had was to lift my eight-month-old up puppy up by his leash

and whip him out of the way, landing him hard on his back on the log. He was terrified. The owner grabbed his dog. Luckily there were no bites. Thank goodness. The owners both apologized profusely. They said they didn’t see me, but honestly it didn’t matter. Their dog should have been on a leash. Events like this cause trauma to other dogs, especially puppies that are learning about the world and how to behave around other dogs. Today we are just feeling grateful that none of us were bitten. The owner was being irresponsible. The dike is a beautiful place to walk dogs. In fact, I walk there every day and always see people walking their dogs off-leash. Many owners leash their dogs when they see me approaching and others simply just don’t care. Walking your dog in a leashed area means your dog must be on a leash

100 per cent of the time. This does not mean you can walk them off-leash and when a dog and an owner approach you put the leash on. This does not mean that just because your big dog is OK with other dogs that he or she can be off-leash. It applies to everyone that walks on the dike with their dog. Maybe Delta should enforce this somehow? Maybe people should be fined? Another reasons that it is important to keep your dogs on leash on the dike is because of the bikes. The dike is shared by horses, bikes, joggers and walkers with their dogs. Also a cyclist, I have almost hit a few dogs of irresponsible owners that have wandered right in front of my path, again, off-leash. Editor: Last Friday’s edition included five pieces about the casino, and while I respect the rights of the writers to hold their stated beliefs and thank them for presenting their views, I believe only one of them got it right. Let me elaborate: M. Cheney’s letter thanking a pair of councillors for voting against casino should not have been so inclusive. Do not project that the speakers at the public hearing represent the thoughts of all of Ladner’s and Delta’s populace. The writer’s apparent belief that they spoke for the area’s total population is ludicrous. The same comment applies to the statement in Tom Morrison’s letter. The mayor and councillors

heard the strong opposition of the majority of the meeting’s speakers. Nothing more, nothing less. The writer should not extrapolate the speaker’s opposition to be the allinclusive public. Nicholas Wong’s Community Comment column stated Delta council heard the community’s strong opposition, yet repeat what they heard was the strong opposition of some of the meeting’s speakers. Naomi Miller’s letter claims no argument can sanction casino approval with the knowledge available. What a jaw dropping statement. She seems to believe that only her interpretation of the available knowledge is correct. She is welcome to her opinion but she should not so

arrogantly project that her belief/value set is the only one that matters. Only editor Ted Murphy summarizes what happened at these meetings in an objective and non-bias manner when he states: “... there’s little doubt there were more casino opponents than supporters at last week’s public hearing at the Ladner Community Centre, but does that mean more Deltans oppose the project than support it?” I contend the editor’s words are the only credible summation that can be taken away from the hearing. I believe the letters and column from the other four writers expressed their point of view and not the worldwide view they conveyed. Robert W. Craig

$3 million from casino is chump change

Editor: Re: Another warning, Murphy’s Law, May 11 I too don’t grasp mayor and council’s zeal to have a casino in Delta. We’re told the city will get as much as $3 million a year from the casino, and we’re told the city has a $50-million wish-list of

wanna-have parks and recreation projects, implying that we taxpayers are dim enough to believe that $3 million from the casino will make mayor and council’s $50 million in wishes come true without need of a big loan. And what about maintenance costs on $50 million

in nice-to-have projects? Probably much more than the $3 million the city will get from the casino each year. Something smells and it’s not the compost. That $3 million coming from the casino is chump change. Greg J. Edwards

Ladner Rotary Club spearheads drinking water project in Laos In remote villages of Laos, considered the most bombed country in history where one-third of the population was killed during a 20-year civil war, lack of access to clean water is both a health problem and a barrier to education for many children. The village of Ban Xiengda has running water for the first time, allowing children and women to trade off time and energy for hauling water uphill over great distance for school and other family essential activities, thanks to the Rotary Club of Ladner and other clubs in B.C. and Ontario, including the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen. Faced with its 2016 population of 1,133 expected to triple in five years, the village of Ban Xiengda had one cement block toilet with no running water. A new system to deliver water to the village was needed. Members of the Rotary Club of Ladner took action to enable women and children to avoid the constant trek to the nearest water supply and long, arduous uphill trek back home when they could be in school or engaged in other productive family and village activities.

A woman uses one of the 15 taps serving families throughout the village of Ban Xiengda in northern Laos. The $45,000 Rotary-sponsored project, which included a dam, pipeline and water tank system, means villagers no longer need to devote time and energy hauling water uphill. Ladner Rotary took the lead in constructing a $45,000 project to deliver water to the village, including a dam, 6.5 kilometres of pipe and 15 taps. Some Ladner Rotarians had been visiting Ban Xiengda and other remote villages of northern Laos in recent years to deliver water purification filters and, in turn, enable education under the registered charity, Adopt-A-Village in

Laos program, founded by Rotarian Steve Rutledge. The new system delivers water directly to the village, the water filters clean the water for drinking, reducing the time and energy for accessing water and reducing the chronic diarrhea among all ages of villagers, including children prevented from attending school. The Rotary Club of Ladner provided 45 per

cent of the funding for the project. Visiting remote villages of Laos, with other Rotarians and friends, to deliver water filters and leading fundraising back home have been Ladner Rotarians Mike and Kathy Storey who have led the project, Diana Nimsick with daughter Tamara, Sonia Baron, Sandra O’Keeffe, and Dawn and Beau Rutledge-Brennan.

Faced with rising gas prices and a growing client list, the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society is putting out the call for more drivers in the Delta area. “It’s Ladner, Tsawwassen, even North Delta too,” said society vice president George Garrett. According to Garrett, the Surrey/Delta area saw 1,400 trips in 2016, a figure that jumped to 2,200 in 2017. “This year our numbers continue to climb,” he said. “It is very surprising to me. Some are new people to Canada, our population is aging more and unfortunately, cancer comes with that age in many and just the general awareness of our group. The more publicity we get, the word just seems to spread. I think all of those factors have combined and we just need more drivers to provide this service.” The high gas prices have also played a big factor. “We increased our stipend for every kilometre driven to 44 cents even before the gas prices hit $1.60,” he said. “But one of the ways it has affected us is in the general donations back. One of our biggest donations is from the drivers themselves who many, in general, contribute part of their payment back to us. With the high price of gas, I think many drivers

will cut back on that and I certainly don’t blame them for that. It is just the reality.” The society was established in 2015 following the unexpected cancellation of a similar program offered by the Canadian Cancer Society. Volunteer drivers offer round trip transportation to treatment facilities across the Lower

Mainland and Fraser Valley. Drivers are reimbursed for the kilometres driven and parking costs and are connected to the people they will be driving in a safe manner. In order to be a driver, you must commit to at least one full day a week (one full day or two half days), be at least 21, have a driver’s licence, proper insurance and complete a

criminal record check. Ladner’s Al Lund started as a volunteer driver in November. “It’s very rewarding. Everyone is so thankful. Some people go for treatment three weeks in a row. I really enjoy it. You get to meet a lot of great people,” said Lund. To learn more, call 604515-5400 or visit www.volunteercancerdrivers.ca.

TRAGEDY TURNS INTO

ADVOCACY

Ian Jacques I ijacques@delta-optimist.com

I

t was a beautiful weekend. Michael and Laurel Middelaer were getting ready to celebrate their son Christian’s eighth birthday on May 19, 2008. Two days before, on May 17, Alexa, their four-year-old daughter, went with Michael to Abbotsford to pick up his parents who had flown in from Calgary. When they returned to their East Ladner home, they all enjoyed the early afternoon poolside in their backyard. It was perfect. Later that day, Alexa was excited to show her grandparents a horse that she fed near their home. Michael’s sister Daphne, who was also joining in the celebration, suggested they go to a tack store in Ladner to get some special horsey treats. So Daphne, Alexa and her grandparents got in the car and off they went. It would be the last time Michael and Laurel would see their daughter alive.

THE ACCIDENT

Laurel, Michael and “I went to my parents first Christian continued and my dad was covered their afternoon by the in blood – he looked pool. “I heard a few sirens terrible. I asked him how close by and I rememAlexa was and all he said ber saying to Christian, was, ‘I’m sorry” ‘Wow, there is some– Michael Middelaer thing significant going on.’ If we hear more sirens let’s get on our bikes and go see what is going on,” recalls Laurel. Michael says their backyard faced to the east and the next major roadway was 64th Street. “So we were literally 500, maybe 1,000, feet from the accident scene,” says Michael. “My Blackberry was inside. Laurel went inside to get something and noticed the phone and that someone had called. We didn’t recognize the number. I thought it was odd.” Michael checked his voicemail, which informed him a family member had been in a serious accident. “I called back and the first thing I asked is: How is my daughter?

The person at the end of the line said just get here.” To this day, the Middelaers have no idea who was on the other end of the line. “After Michael got off the phone, I knew. I don’t know how, but I just had this sense that it was Alexa and that she was dead,” says Laurel. “We quickly scrambled out. I was in my bathing suit and we drove, which is inexplicable to me thinking about it now, because we could have just ran.” Laurel remembers parking the car, leaving the keys inside and jumping out. “We just opened the doors and we said we are the family and the crowd just split apart and we ran through.” At the time of the accident, Michael’s parents stayed in the car while Daphne and Alexa went to feed the horse. Had they not stayed in the car, they too would have PHOTO SUBMITTED likely been killed. “I went to my parents first and my dad was covered in blood – he looked terrible. I asked him how Alexa was and all he said was, ‘I’m sorry,” Michael says. “At that moment as a son and as a father I knew it was incredibly dire. At that point I started shutting down my emotions and my mission became getting close to my daughter.” Laurel described the scene as “true chaos.” “Because she hit on impact, the fence was shattered. A number of cows got loose and with the helicopters coming to land, they were frightened. Then there was so many first responders.”

For Michael, one of the toughest parts was seeing the faces of the police officers. “The police officers were in shock. I actually had to calm down some really young officers. I said I understand this is gruesome, but you need to let me get to my daughter. “That connection was so critical for me. After a period of time I connected with an off-duty EMS instructor and he said your daughter is non-responsive, not breathing on her own, her heart is beating, but this is extremely dire. It became clear to me that we had lost Alexa.” After convincing first responders they would remain calm, they were able to get closer to Alexa. “All we could really touch was her ankle,” says Laurel. “At one point I remember being alone at the scene. I remember standing beside Carol’s car and Alexa’s basket with all the horsey treats were all over the road. A firefighter came to me and he handed me Daphne’s personal items. In this horrible scene I looked down at her jewelry all covered in twigs and blood and I’m thinking what horrific thing has just happened to our family.” As Alexa was put in the air ambulance for the trip to BC Children’s Hospital and Michael confirmed which hospital his parents were being sent to, Laurel’s attention turned to Christian. In all the chaos they had lost him. “There was an officer who noticed me and she came to me and said do you need help and I said we had lost Christian,” says Laurel. “She slipped her coat over me. We later learned that it was Const. Sarah Swallow. She came back and said look, and all I saw was this tall police officer with Christian in his arms.” All three of them were then loaded in an ambulance so they could be at the hospital when Alexa arrived. “I just remember becoming detached from a lot of things around me,” says Michael. “I turned to Laurel and I said this will not break our family. We will find some good. I don’t know how those words came to me, but they just seemed at the time the right thing to be thinking and believing.” The next hours and days are a blur, but Michael and Laurel

were committed to celebrate Christian’s birthday. “At that time we were looking for some normalcy,” says Michael. “To this day, and I don’t talk about this much, Christian provided me with this great anchor and epicenter of normalcy. When we came home and settling in on that birthday evening, he is sitting on the floor with some friends and he looks up and says, ‘Did Alexa die?’ And we said sadly she is no longer with us. He said, ‘Oh.’ He didn’t cry, he just went about his business. I know he had internalized it, and he missed and loved his sister, but that was a tremendous amount of leadership that I look back on today. That desire for normalcy has been critical for all of us.”

SEEKING JUSTICE (THE TRIAL PROCESS)

After an exhausting judicial process, Carol Berner was convicted in July 2010 of impaired driving causing death and bodily harm, and dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm. She was sentenced to 30 months in prison in November 2010, but was released on bail to launch an appeal after serving just two weeks of her sentence. After exhausting all her appeals, Berner, began serving her sentence in March 2013. She was released in November 2014.

JOURNEY FOR CHANGE

The journey for change began when the Middelaers learned the crash was a result of an impaired driver. “For us it was finding some good in this tragedy,” says Michael. Laurel says there was an amazing outpouring of support

and emotion, including financial aid for the family. A friend suggested a memorial fund be set up, which the family did, but they felt there was another way for their story to be told. So from that memorial fund, Alexa’s Team and Alexa’s Bus – a police station on wheels -- were born and became the catalyst for change to impaired driving laws. The bus allows police to conduct impaired driving investigations at the scene of a roadblock, while Alexa’s Team is a province-wide policing effort targeting impaired drivers. More than 2,000 provincial and municipal officers are now part of Alexa’s Team, a group “Her story has impacted that has removed men and women and thousands of impaired drivers motivated them to do from our roads. better in their work and The Middelaers make our province safer.” also challenged the provincial – Laurel Middelaer government to reduce the number of deaths in B.C. caused by impaired driving, resulting in the introduction of the Immediate Roadside Prohibition program, which has helped cut the number of alcohol-related fatalities by more than 50 per cent.

FAMILY IMPACTS

Laurel says the advocacy work and being in the public eye has been emotional at times. When she hears stories of officers carrying a picture of Alexa in their notebook, on their car visor or in a jacket

FILE PHOTO

pocket close to their heart she is in awe of the emotional effect Alexa has on so many people. “Last week we were at an Alexa’s Team event in Kelowna and the top cop in the southeast division said something that I have never heard before and it actually is a beautiful, healing tonic,” says Laurel. “He said I want you to know there is not a day that has gone by in our detachment that Alexa’s name is not spoken. When I heard that as a mother – 10 years later – my daughter’s name is spoken for motivation, inspiration and public good, I just wept. “Her story has impacted men and women and motivated them to do better in their work and make our province safer.” In 2012, on the advice of a therapist who was helping Christian, the family moved from East Ladner to South Surrey. Laurel says that move made a significant difference in their healing. “Ladner is a very dear community and we are so grateful for the support we had in that community, but living so close to where it happened was a constant reminder.”

THE FUTURE

Laurel says they’ve looked at the 10-year mark as a transition point for the family. “Although there has been tremendous change in our province, I think that is where it is,” she says. “There are a lot of committed officers where impaired driving is on the radar and the changes to the laws have been incredible, but we are at the point where our son is graduating from high school. We are committed to have stability for him, but now there is an opportunity to transition into something else. “We just don’t know what that transition will be yet.”

their wealth, nor their race “nor anything else in all creation would separate them from the love of God through Jesus Christ.” That was, and still is, good news. Since that first Pentecost day, we have joined with others around the world who have called Jesus, “Saviour and Lord.” It was a day of new birth. However, this day will only hold significance if we participate as the disciples did, and fling open the closed places of our hearts and minds and proclaim with boldness that God’s love is acting amongst us. The Spirit continues to move us beyond our complacency and declare, by our words and deeds, that God brings new life.

We dazzle everyone with our use of fancy words and call the day, Pentecost. So, on that first Pentecost day, the disciples had been hiding behind locked doors since they were afraid that they, like Jesus, would be rounded up, persecuted and killed for following Jesus. While they were huddled together, the Holy Spirit came upon them and gave them a boldness of speech and spirit. They flung open the doors and

Building show from scratch Students create opera/musical inspired by Where the Wild Things Are book DAVE WILLIS

tudents from the Delta School District’s Performance Academy with Vancouver Opera are busy this month visiting Delta schools performing their one-act opera/musical inspired by Maurice Sendak’s classic picture book Where the Wild Things Are. The students wrote, composed and designed the production in collaboration with composer Lesley Sutherland, vocal coach Leah Giselle Field and herself, says director Sarah Jane Pelzer. She says the students worked really effectively as a team and everyone contributed. “The really cool thing for me that’s come out of this project is seeing how naturally the students went through the process of building something up from scratch,” says Pelzer, who’s an instructor at the academy and also a freelance director who occasionally does work at Vancouver Opera. “It was never a struggle to get them to have ideas and to engage with the process of going from a book with 300 words to creating a full musical.” Kris Starr plays one of the Wild Things in the production. That’s one of the best and one of the hardest parts, because there’s no one watching

over you telling you to do certain things with certain parts of the book,” Starr says. “You get to pick and choose everything that you want.” The ArtStarts in Schools charitable organization

provided a grant for this project, notes district vice principal of academies Paige Hansen. She adds that Sutherland has visited the schools ahead of time and worked with students on

Yes, And: An Evening of Improvised Theatre and Original Student Creations will showcase what the team does as well as music, art and possibly some student-written monologues, says the team’s Brooke McCarthy. McCarthy and fellow student Syrah Khan cofounded the team, which

is now in its third year. “We’re a really high energy group. We’ve worked really hard during this year to come together as a team and we feed off of each other really well,” says Khan. She explains that improv is theatre without any sort of script or planning in advance. The upcoming evening will include plenty of audience interaction. “We want them to have fun,” says team member Terrence Nollan. The team does competition improv and placed eighth out of 24

in the Canadian Improv Games regionals back in February. Khan says the group gets good support from drama teacher Jennifer Harbott. “We have a really amazing teacher who’s here to support us and she’s really helped us.” Yes, And: An Evening of Improvised Theatre and Original Student Creations is set for Thursday, May 24 at 7 p.m. at Equinox Theatre. Admission is by donation with all proceeds going towards helping next year’s SDSS Improv Team.

How to avoid common running injuries Well on Your Way P.J. WREN

People in Delta love to run. I never really reflected on that until a little kid in Payette, Idaho made me realize it. We were there a number of years ago visiting my father-in-law when I went for a run. About halfway into it I passed a young boy standing at the end of his driveway. As I ran past him he shouted at me, “What are you doing lady?” I laughed

and turned around and replied, “Running.” He didn’t quite know how to answer back to that. Running is convenient, you can do it anywhere (including Payette, Idaho), you don’t need a lot of equipment and, for that matter, a lot of skill either. So, it’s understandable a runner gets ticked off when they are sidelined by an injury. Most running injuries

affect the lower body, which makes sense since it’s the lower extremities doing all of the work. Why injuries happen are due to a number of reasons: too much mileage and too soon, poor biomechanics, or maybe your muscles aren’t healthy, flexible or strong enough. The most common injuries for runners are: plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, patellofemoral

pain syndrome (also know as “runner’s knee”) and iliotibial (IT) band syndrome. Plantar fasciitis is pain in the heel and the bottom of the foot. The “itis” let’s you know It’s inflammation, and in this case it’s inflammation of a band of connective tissue on the underside of your foot. It’s painful and can take a long time to heal, so if you are experiencing any foot pain, get yourself to a physiotherapist — STAT. Some things you can do to avoid plantar fasciitis include: stretching your calf muscles, working on the mobility of your ankle joint, wearing proper footwear (go visit my buddies at The Run Inn), focus on relaxing your lower leg muscles when you run, run on flat surfaces, and when running land with a mid-foot strike, instead of a heel strike. This will keep your plantar tendon relaxed. With Achilles tendonitis, you will encounter pain on the back of the lower leg. To avoid ticking off your Achilles tendon, warm-up with a brisk walk before you run and keep your calf muscles strong and flexible. However, if you do tick off your Achilles, ice, rest, a glass of wine and physiotherapy will get you back on track again. Patellofemoral pain syndrome is pain at the front of the knee, near or

right under the kneecap. To sidestep this type of knee pain you have to hit the gym or a class. At the gym work on strengthening your glutes, hips and hamstrings, and then go hit up a yoga class to work on your mobility and flexibility. Lastly is my foe iliotibial (IT) band syndrome. The IT band is a tendon that runs from the outside of the hip and attaches to the outside of the knee. If you have pain on the outside of the knee, and sometimes the side of the hip, chances are it’s your IT band. This little tendon had me limping for a number of months back when I was doing triathlons. Luckily we have now come to an agreement. Steer clear of IT band problems by strengthening your glutes and outer hips muscles, while also working your core, and stretching your calves, hamstrings, quads and hips on a regular basis. If you are encountering any of these symptoms I listed, please don’t ignore them. The longer you leave things, the more damage you will do and the longer it will take to get yourself better once you finally do go to a physiotherapist. OK? OK. Francis Munroe and Stephanie Fenton of Imperial Hobbies were on hand to provide a comic book history lesson, including a look at the Golden Age of Comics, from the late 1930s to 1950, when modern comic books were first published and rapidly increased in popularity. Tigers hungry for a challenge

Unbeaten defending BC champs should get it in Richmond this weekend MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A tougher than usual draw might prompt some teams to complain to tournament organizers unless you happen to be an undefeated defending provincial champion starving for a challenge. Such is the case with the Delta Tigers as they head to Richmond this weekend for the ninth annual Victoria Day Wooden Bat Tournament. The 15U Bantam AAA squad is coasting along with a 16-0-0 record in regular season play thanks to a roster that is loaded with veterans and pitching talent. Last Sunday’s doubleheader sweep of Chilliwack was typical of the season so far with lopsided 10-0 and 6-1 wins. It’s a simple case of math of why the Tigers are so dominant, especially with a steady diet of back-to-back weekend doubleheaders. “Last year we had a lot of first-year players and won the provincials with them. Where most teams got maybe two or three guys back, we have six. We may see a team’s one ace pitcher over the weekend where we have three guys of that quality,” explained head coach Cam Frick.

Boston Warkentin (right) is congratulated after his three-run homer Sunday. Boston Warkentin, Noah Thomas and Luke Siemens are men among boys. The trio of hurlers are all at least 6-feet and 180-pounds with plenty of velocity on their fastballs. Frick even has other quality pitchers at his disposal and it’s easy to see why he is looking forward to the Richmond tourney. Delta has been put in a three-team group with defending champion Okotokos and Cloverdale. The Tigers defeated the academy team from the Calgary suburb en route to the 2016 title but lost in last year’s rematch. Even Cloverdale is expected to be a stiff test, having defeated Delta 2-1 in exhibition play back in early April. “We are definitely looking forward to it,” Frick continued. “We know we have a bit of a bulls-eye on our backs right now and it’s going to be interesting to see how the kids respond to it against a couple of quality teams. It’s been a good run through the middle of May of getting our first-year kids up to speed but you want to get the best out of your second-years too. This

The top two from each of the four pool groups advance to Sunday’s quarter-finals in the 12-team event. The semi-finals are slated for Monday morning and the championship game goes at 2:30 p.m. The tourney features two other Alberta entries, Parkland and Sherwood Park. It appears to be a two-horse race for first place in the 15U AAA top tier between Delta and West Coast (13-0-1). A four game homeand-home weekend series early next month could very well determine the regular season winner and automatic berth to Baseball B.C.’s national qualifying tournament in August. The Tigers will also be taking aim at their third straight B.C. Baseball provincial title a week

earlier in Chilliwack. The team is also looking forward to hosting the inaugural Kyle Losse Memorial Tournament June 28-July 2 at Winskill Park. The teen standout had earned a spot on the Tigers’ 2018 roster when he tragically passed away in January. His parents, Brian and Niki Losse, are a big part of Tsawwassen Baseball at the coaching and executive levels. “Lots of sponsors are stepping up and it’s great to see. Brian and Niki are so influential in Tsawwassen Baseball and people want to be a part of it,” added Frick. Brian and Frick have teamed up to coach B.C. Baseball’s U13 Selects team. Frick is also overseeing the 15U Selects as well as the Vancouver Coastal team that will be competing at the B.C. Summer Games in July.

Derrheim 2nd at Maple Leaf mini-tour event It was a standout finish close to home for Charlie Derrheim when the Maple Leaf Golf Junior Tour’s Mini Tour made a stop at Tsawwassen Springs on Sunday. The event attracted 72 players from ages five through 12, which together with the wait-list eclipsed the previous record

set a few weeks back. Competing in the Boys 11-12-Year-Old Division, Derrheim finished two strokes back of Vancouver’s Aaron Huang who carded a 3-over 73. He was also two shots clear of third place finisher Nathan Szpakowicz, also of Vancouver.

Tsawwassen’s Andersen named to B.C. Baseball’s U13 Selects Team

Will Andersen will be wearing Team B.C. colours this season. The Tsawwassen Amateur Baseball player has earned a roster spot with B.C. Baseball’s Pee Wee 13U Selects following an extensive tryout process in four regions of the province over the past month. A final selection and development camp took place May 4-6 in Aldergrove. A couple of familiar names will be guilding Team B.C. at this age level. TABA coach Brian Losse is joined by Delta Tigers coach Cam Frick.

Losse is currently overseeing Tsawwassen’s Pee Wee “AA” team and last year led that age group to the provincial title. Frick is in charge of the powerhouse 15U Bantam AAA team that is two-time defending B.C. Baseball champions and currently own a perfect record (16-0) in regular season play. Team B.C. 13U’s schedule is highlighted by a trip to eastern Washington next month for the Triple Crown’s Tri-Cities Father’s Day Slugfest taking place in Pasco, Richland and Kennewick.

It is with great sadness that we share the sudden passing of Harold. Lovingly missed by Lynn, his partner and best friend of 38 years; his children Lana (Peter), Patty, Jennifer (Jim), Stacey (Kevin) and Ross (Billie); grandchildren Alex, Trevor, Ryan, Keegan, Elizabeth, Jake and Emma; sister Iona and brother John (Margie); predeceased by sister Mimi.

Born in Glasgow Scotland and moved to Canada in 1953, married his loving Shirley Roper (predeceased) and raised sons John (Nolleke), and Alex (Liz). Grandchildren Renee (Pep), Mike (Jen), Leigh-Anne (David), David (Christi), Heather (Sam). Greatgrandchildren Gavin, Cooper and Sarah. Later years he met Kate Van Eunen and was welcomed into her family by Peter, Jan, Kristen and Corey. Dave was a Veteran and a member of the Masons since a young man and the Legion for 62 years. He enjoyed lawn bowling and darts with the Ladner Seniors.

FAGRIE, Barbara Ann (nee Ramsey) It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara on May 6th, at the age of 78. She was born in Simcoe, Ontario to Charles and Dorothy Ramsey, and was raised on a tobacco farm. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, and her brothers, Rudy and Norm. She is survived by her husband, Mel, children: Kim (Mark), Tracy (Cris), Brent (Jill), and grandchildren: Ashley, Lindsay, Nicole, Levi, Jacob, and Kian, as well as her siblings: Shirley, Baxter (her twin), Betty, and Bill. Barb moved to Vancouver in the summer of 1960 intending to pursue a career in hairdressing. She met Mel on a blind date, and they married 12 days later on January 13, 1961. Barb and Mel moved their young family to Ladner in 1972, spent their early retirement years in the Shuswap from 19912009, and moved back to the Lower Mainland to be closer to their children and grandchildren. She enjoyed crafting, gardening, painting, and bingo. The family would like to thank Richmond Hospital for their compassionate care and attention to Barbara’s needs in her final days. We would also like to extend our grateful appreciation to a special friend, Auntie Trudy, for all of her love and support.

Harold was born on Salt Spring Island and spent his first 6 years on Galiano Island. The family moved to North Pacific Cannery on the Skeena River, eventually settling in Prince Rupert. Harold was a well-respected commercial fishermen for nearly 60 years fishing halibut, herring and salmon. His first job as a skipper was at the age of 12, running a gut scow between canneries along the Skeena. He worked on packers and tugboats, and then spent a year working as a deckhand on a seiner before realizing the only place to be was in the wheelhouse. He was one of the first fishermen to participate in the roe on kelp and roe herring fisheries on the West Coast. Of his fleet of fishing vessels, the “Snow Queen” was his favourite and the last boat he fished from before retiring. In his retirement years, Harold looked forward to Thursday lunch at either the Ladner Legion or with the Retired Skippers group. He was also a member of Beach Grove Golf Club and the Tsawwassen Men’s Club. Special thanks to the doctors and staff at Delta Hospital and Surrey Memorial Hospital HAU Ward. Join us for a Celebration of Life at Beach Grove Golf Club, 5976-12th Avenue, Tsawwassen, on Saturday, June 16, 2018 between 1:00-4:00pm.
