Charges aren’t expected soon in fatal crash

First market set for Sunday
Thousands to descend on village The first Ladner Village Market of 2018 is set for Sunday. More than 160 artisan vendors, including many new ones, are scheduled to set up shop along 48th Avenue and thousands of shoppers are expected to descend on Ladner Village as the popular market begins its 22nd season. Vendors at the market offer fresh produce, gourmet food,
home and garden products, art, jewelry and much more. The market spans three blocks along 48th Avenue, from Elliott to Delta streets, and runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dance band Kokosoul (morning) and veteran bluesman Wes Mackey (afternoon) will be providing the entertainment. • Check out complete market coverage on Page 13.
Police confirmed immediately that alcohol is suspected as a factor, but don’t expect charges to be laid soon in connection with a deadly crash in Ladner that claimed the life of a 19-yearold last Saturday night. It could take months, at least, for any charges to be laid in connection with the suspected drunk driving accident on Highway 17A that killed Olivia Malcom. RCMP Sgt. Lorne Lecker of the Deas Island Traffic Services said Olivia Malcom although police are proceeding as an impaired driving causing death investigation, such cases are complex. “These are very slow investigations. We have to wait for the coroner’s report to come in, mechanical reports to come in, the collision analyst report to come in, so these things can take up to a year. We’re hoping for less than that,” he told the Optimist. That information will eventually be given to Crown, which has to review those findings, Lecker said. The two-vehicle collision occurred just north of Ladner Trunk Road around 10 p.m. According to RCMP, a northbound vehicle in which Malcom was a passenger in was stopped at the side of the highway. A clear vision for the past Society has a variety of ideas to preserve Delta’s rich fishing history SANDOR GYARMATI

Town murals, historical plaques and even an interpretive centre. It all could be part of preserving Delta’s fishing heritage, according to residents who formed their own society in the hopes of trying to make sure an integral part of the city’s past isn’t lost. The Delta Fishing Heritage Society has been talking to anyone who will listen, including the City of Delta, says member John Stevens, who comes from a long line of Delta fishermen. Stevens says his group has talked to Delta’s parks, recreation and culture department, hoping to partner with the city on a number of initiatives. The society now has in its possession a donated old fishing boat, the Persian Fisher, which had been in storage for many years in a barn. The boat needs some restoration work but could be a great display item, says Stevens. “Our first thing is trying to restore the old gillnetter and Doug (Massey) and I had a meeting with (department head) Ken Kuntz and we’re hoping to potentially be partnering on that. We’ll restore the boat and hopefully they’ll get a spot for us and hopefully even pay the cost of a cement pad and roof for

Delta Fishing Heritage Society volunteers Doug Massey, Nick Stevens, John Capaduoca, John Stevens and Peter Capadouca next to the Persian Fisher, a boat they’re hoping to restore. it,” he says. “That’s what they do at other places to display heritage fishing vessels. There’s one up in Campbell River we kind of modeled our proposal on.” The City of Delta will have a new, modern museum operating next year, which will be referred to as the Delta Cultural Centre. Stevens says they’re hoping to be involved in some way with programming at the new facility. “We have a number of ideas we’re pursuing. One of them is to eventually have a separate fishing museum/Fraser River
interpretive centre. The idea came from Michael Duncan when he was curator of the museum and it was his idea that Delta at some point should have a separate museum for the fishing industry. His idea was that it go on the north side of Ladner Harbour, right across from Sharkey’s because Delta has control over that and can easily put it there,” explains Stevens. Noting Delta has a new heritage strategy, Stevens says some of their ideas also include interpretative markings for all the historic cannery sites, as well as a heritage mural project
which could really put Delta on the map. Some things could be achieved in the short term while others, such as the interpretative centre, would be a long-term goal that could add a great deal to a revived Ladner waterfront area, he says. Members of the group have recently made presentations to the Ladner Rotary Club and Ladner Business Association to outline the vision. Long-time resident Doug Massey, whose father George Massey ran the Ladner Machine shop in the original the Lanning, Fawcett & Wilson
Ltd. building on the Ladner waterfront, says there is a 137-year fishing history of Delta that needs to be preserved. As far as the Ladner waterfront, which has been bogged down in the city’s inability to secure long-term water lot leases from the province, Delta should consider going into partnership with the Musqueam and Tsawwassen First Nations, suggests Massey. The Delta Fishing Heritage Society is hoping to attract more volunteers to help out. It can be reached through its Facebook page.
GoFundMe page has raised over $75,000 for bursary
CONTINUED from Page 1 Lecker said there were three occupants in the car. The male driver, Malcom’s boyfriend, pulled over to the shoulder at the bus stop and stayed in the vehicle while Malcom and a female friend got out to check for something in the trunk.
Both women were behind the vehicle when it was struck from behind by a northbound Jeep. Malcom, who had reportedly been at a lacrosse game between the Delta Islanders and New Westminster Salmonbellies at the Ladner Leisure Centre,
was pronounced dead at the scene, while her friend, 20, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The Jeep driver remained at the scene and cooperated. Lecker said police are interviewing witnesses but are still seeking others,
especially those who have dash cams. Anyone with information is asked to call 778-290-2400 and quote file number 2018-1802. Malcom, a member of the New Westminster lacrosse community, was just days away from her 20th birthday. A GoFundMe page has
been set up for the Olivia Malcom Kindness Bursary. The page, which had raised more than $75,000 by yesterday morning, is at www.gofundme.com/ omkindness. A celebration of life is planned for Queens Park Arena in New Westminster this Sunday at 2 p.m.

with regards to access to hyper-local ingredients as we plan the prospect of our future beer and culinary destination.”
A combined restaurant and craft brewery have been proposed by Four Winds for the Southlands site, which will play a critical role in the company’s plans for operational expansion and product extensions.
The Southlands site already has zoning in place for a brewpub. Century Group and Four Winds are requesting that the City of Delta make some minor modifications to the current Southlands zoning to accommodate the unique needs of Four Winds business operations and their future growth plans.
A major factor that influenced Four Winds’ decision to locate at Southland was the ability to have a restaurant and brewing facility right beside a farm, giving Four Winds the opportunity to grow their own local hops, grain and other ingredients for use in specialty beers. The restaurant will also focus on using fresh ingredients sourced directly from the farm and local to the region. “Growing up in Tsawwassen, I could have never imagined the kind of development that Century Group has in mind for this site,” said Adam Mills, Sales & Marketing Director and Co-founder of Four Winds Brewing. “The fact that over 300 acres of the land is being prepped for prime agricultural use has us very inspired
Century Group President Sean Hodgins said he shares the excitement about Four Winds coming to Tsawwassen and about the opportunity to anchor the Southlands Market District with Four Winds new restaurant and craft brewing facility. “We are creating a Market District at Southlands where people will gather and socialize for all kinds of activities relating to farming and food. I can’t think of a better anchor than Delta’s home grown leading craft brewer,” Hodgins said. “Four Winds’ track record for quality beer will be bolstered by their commitment to offer quality food in a place where
many of their ingredients can be grown on site.” Four Winds is the first formal business partner to be announced for the Southlands Market District, which will be the social hub and centre of food commerce for the new community under development. The Market District will also be home to a Southlands Discovery Centre, the Red Barn, and various retail and services. Four Winds Brewing Company has become a local Delta success story since first opening the doors to their craft brewery in June 2013. Owned, operated and built from the ground up by the Mills family (brothers Brent and Adam along with their father Greg are all co-founders), the company’s beer offerings have received numerous accolades including being named Canadian Brewery of the Year in 2015 and Beer of the Year (Nectarous Dry Hopped Sour) in 2016 at the Canadian Brewery Awards. This year, Four Winds won a silver medal at the 2018 World Beer Cup and won silver and three bronze medals at the 2018 Canadian Brewery Awards.

KinVillage re-development plan to be discussed at open house

A 24-unit building proposed for the corner of 51st Street and 47th Avenue is aimed at ‘new seniors.’
Four-storey condo plan sent to public hearing SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Locals will have a chance to have their say on Delta Green. Delta council has given preliminary approval to a four-storey condo building proposed for a pair of single-family lots in the 4600-block of 51st Street, behind the Ladner Lawn Bowling Club and across from the Ladner Pioneer Library. It will now go to a public hearing, likely on June 26. The 24-unit proposal, which would have no rental units, has a target market of “new seniors,” described as those over 55 who are active and downsizing from single-family homes. Most of the debate around the council table
centered on the suggestion by Coun. Jeannie Kanakos that the project should perhaps provide some sort of community amenity given that council had asked staff recently to come back with a report on a potential community amenity policy. She said the Delta Green applicant would enjoy a significant upzoning from what’s currently in place for the site. Acting CAO Steven Lan said it’s been his experience that community amenities have been negotiated for larger projects and that asking for something like that now, at this stage, would likely mean the proposal would have to start over. Coun. Sylvia Bishop agreed it would be unfair to have the applicant go back now after not being
asked to provide a community amenity, saying Delta “can’t unroll the dice.” Coun. Heather King agreed, saying she looks forward to seeing what staff bring back as far as an amenity policy, but it wouldn’t be fair to have Delta Green left “out to dry” and be expected to provide something at this stage. Mayor Lois Jackson warned the city has to keep in mind that whatever amenity policy it comes up with, it must be lawful, noting the city “should not be buying zoning or selling zoning.” Some of the concerns she expressed about the project include the increase in density and the removal of all but one of the 38 trees on the site.
Residents have a chance to comment next week at an open house regarding the proposed re-development of KinVillage in Tsawwassen. KinVillage Association is applying for a change in land-use designation in Delta’s Official Community Plan, which would allow for long-term re-development of the 10th Avenue site geared toward seniors. “The application is at its early stages and we do not have a date for when it will be before (Delta)
council,” said Marcy Sangret, Delta’s director of community planning and development. “We are currently undertaking the public notification and consultation step.” The open house will be held on Thursday, June 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at South Delta Secondary. The open house is open to all members of the public, not just residents in the vicinity of KinVillage. “Public comments are particularly appreciated during this early stage as they provide both staff and the applicant use-
ful information that can be incorporated into the application in the coming weeks,” added Sangret. “This application would only amend the OCP at this point. Subsequent rezonings would be required once detailed site and building plans are confirmed, at which time the city would solicit further public comment.” The proposed plan includes additional housing, including assisted living, in buildings ranging from four to six storeys. More details on the project can be found at: www.delta.ca/ KinVillageOCP.

Reach for the Stars raises record total Sixth annual banquet to benefit children and youth with special needs tops $120,000 Reach Child and Youth Development Society’s sixth annual Reach for the Stars gala set a fundraising record. Held last Saturday night at Tsawwassen Springs, the banquet raised $120,237 to benefit children and youth with special needs and their families. “The demonstration of community spirit completely electrified me,” said Reach development manager Kristin Bibbs. “I cannot express the depth of my gratitude to everyone who contributed so generously to support the children and families of Reach.” Native North Deltan Steve Darling returned as MC at the gala and charmed the crowd. Delta South MLA Ian Paton served as auctioneer while Tsawwassen First Nation
Chief Bryce Williams performed a traditional welcome. Port of Vancouver was the presenting sponsor and Canadian Autoparts Toyota sponsored Oceans of Potential at the platinum level. In addition, Air Canada Foundation generously donated two tickets to anywhere in North America and Diamond Deals gave a diamond pendant as raffle prizes. High points of the evening included a speech from Delta MP Carla Qualtrough applauding Reach’s work to support the potential of children. A presentation on the Reach Delta Connex program raised awareness about children with fetal alcohol syndrome and the challenges their families face. Afterward, a pledge drive raised a stunning
$12,755 for Connex families within five minutes. “We are humbled and extremely grateful for all of the incredible donors and their generosity will go a long way in helping vulnerable families in our community,” said Reach Delta Connex manager Camille Netherton. May Days Club Youth Choir, including children with autism, received a standing ovation for their performance that culminated in a moving rendition of This is Me with lyrics that promote acceptance and inclusion. At the end of the evening, Reach Foundation chair Denis Horgan offered a big thank you to the many gala volunteers who made the event possible, businesses and individuals who donated and the guests who attended.

The Delta Police Foundation has undergone a rebranding and a new identity with a focus on supporting the DPD, but also reaching out more to Delta’s youth. Newly elected foundation chair Rod Binder recently provided a brief presentation to the Delta police board to share the group’s new focus and goals. “In 2016 at our AGM we had a conversation about what the foundation had done in the past, which was great involvement in a number of capital projects for the Delta Police Department,” said Binder. “At that time we reviewed whether that was a strategy we would continue with or change. At that time we felt we wanted to focus on more of a community-based foundation and support police services by supporting the community and public relations.” Binder said the foundation will now be more

Following that, the foundation will play an active role in the student police academy in July, the youth soccer camp in August and a proposed youth leadership forum in the fall. “We’re extremely proud to support the dedication and service of the Delta police in the community and we are really finding the focus on youth has empowered us and in some ways freed us with a focus to accomplish these things and that they will help to elevate this department as well,” he said.

t’s how the rest of the Lower Mainland has come to know us. Tell someone from elsewhere in the region that you live in Ladner and it’s almost guaranteed that the first thing out of their mouth will be something related to the Ladner Village Market. If it’s during the summer, it’s almost certain the response will include a query as to when the next market will be held. I was at a gathering in Vancouver last weekend and when I was introduced to a couple from Surrey the inevitable happened: “Oh, you’re from Ladner, we love going to the market.” Needless to say, they also informed me they can’t wait until the 2018 season gets going. Well, they won’t have to wait long as the market opens its 22nd season this Sunday when thousands will descend on 48th Avenue to see what more than 160 vendors have to offer. The reason Ladner has become synonymous with the market is because organizers have done a masterful job in creating just the right shopping experience. It’s not too big, but nor is it too small. And at seven times a year, it’s held frequently enough you’ve got options, but the limited run means you better not procrastinate or you’ll end up waiting until next year. Perhaps the market’s greatest strength is the “make it, bake it or grow it” policy that’s applied to all potential vendors. It ensures everyone is selling items they had a hand in creating, which means as a customer you’re dealing directly with the artist or the baker or the farmer or whoever it is that is bringing the product to market. Throw in live entertainment, participating merchants and Delta’s famous sunshine and it creates a certain vibe that people have shown they’ll travel decent distances to enjoy. When you’re on 48th Avenue on a market Sunday and there are so many people you’re hard-pressed to move, remember this throng didn’t happen by accident. After initial resistance and some growing pains, market organizers have now found a sweet spot, a formula that has created an event with broad appeal. I’m sure there are constant calls to expand the footprint or increase the frequency, but I hope they continue to ignore those overtures and keep doing what they’ve been doing. After all, there’s no need to mess with a good thing.
Increasing density allows all generations to live close by
T
here was a report issued by UBC’s Sauder School of Business a couple of weeks back that suggests red tape is the biggest culprit in high housing cost. While recognizing that speculation is definitely a contributor to the high cost of housing in Metro Vancouver, massive cost additions in the process that are incurred by developers are ultimately passed on to buyers. Author Dr. James Taney notes these costs can add an additional $600,000 to the price for a new build which can often take as long as two years of hoop jumping to get approval. “The factors driving that are really much more tied to the success of the economy, to population growth and to high-interest rates, and have very little to do with foreign buyers and speculation,” Taney states. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), whose mission is to promote policies that will improve the economic and social wellbeing of people around the world, has 37 member countries of which Canada is one. The OECD notes that density in Vancouver ranks 140th amongst all cities participating. Vancouver has 5,491 people per square kilometre while Metro Vancouver has a mere 490 per square kilometre. If you have ever been to or lived in Paris you will know that it is a beautiful and highly walkable and liveable city that seems less dense
Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER
than its 21,498 people per square kilometre, four times the density of Vancouver. This stark contrast exists because vast amounts of real estate in Vancouver proper are zoned single family. There will be a lot of pressure on Vancouver’s government to change zoning in corridors that have traditionally been protected by vocal single family communities. Despite the rally against change, Cambie and Oak streets are morphing quickly and it probably won’t be long until Granville and Arbutus come into play. In the future (maybe sooner than later), NIMBY bastions of Shaughnessy, Kerrisdale and Dunbar will see zoning for laneway housing and, God forbid, townhomes in strategic pockets close to transportation hubs. What does the future look like here? You can see some change occurring in North Delta on 72nd Avenue and elsewhere and there will likely be continued rezoning
applications along Scott Road in light of the Delta Rise success. Ladner is looking great with several pockets of townhomes that, to me, lend an added dose of appeal to an already charming community. In Tsawwassen there are a couple of major developments underway yet there has been little change along major corridors and around our retail and commercial areas. It would be nice to keep our community intact so that generations of families could live together in the same place. Our next municipal government will have the chance to become a leader for the change needed to battle soaring housing prices with more supply. Rental housing is hard to come by here as well. Two of the three slates thus far have identified housing as a concern. Team Delta has noted that affordable housing is an issue while Achieving for Delta has stated it wants to offer more housing choice in town centres without compromising agricultural land. In his study Taney asks: “What is the downside of significantly increasing supply through changes in zoning, regulation and the rate of permitting?” Indeed, my daughter asks the same question. Average Jane backs taxes
Editor: Re: Voters’ revolt is on the horizon: Vander Zalm, June 1 With all due respect, I do not think Bill Vander Zalm has any idea what an average Canadian’s life is like or how we feel. In response to Vander Zalm’s opinion, I would like to say, as an average Canadian, I most definitely support an added tax on speculation of real estate and to take it a step further, I think a flag should be put on property titles in the land registry if the purchasers cannot prove they pay taxes in Canada. A simple showing of your CRA tax assessment, whether you are working or retired, would be enough to prove this. As an average Canadian, I also support the extra taxation of a second home when a vast amount of people (mostly younger people) can’t afford even one. I also believe that if this second home is actually a family cottage, the
tax should not apply, and this again would not be too hard to prove, as most vacation cottages are not located in city and urban areas. I also don’t mind the extra taxation on houses over $3 million. Finally, I thank you for reminding me Vander Zalm was the premier in the late 1980s and early 1990s when homes in Richmond were being bought up in multiples, sight unseen from Asia, and doubling, tripling, quadrupling in price over a few years, but apparently no politician had a hint this might be “foreign investment” and a warning for our future. What our politicians have allowed is the Lower Mainland to be purchased as an investment, while when, as a young but average Canadian, I fled from Richmond for Ladner all I wanted was a home. The worst thing about this mess is that it is splitting up families. Our
young adult children can in no way afford to live close to their parents and interact with support from extended family. As an average Canadian, I cannot afford to buy them a home, townhome, condo, or even help them out with the substantial amount needed for a down payment because an average Canadian is just that. We are the 70 to 80 per cent who make less than $90,000 per year household incomes. Some of us much less. And if that 70 to 80 per cent of us ever realized we are in the majority, we would lead the revolt Vander Zalm is asking for. By the way, it wasn’t until I started working on a farm that I found out the HST was actually good. You see, businesses could file to get back taxes using all the HST amount, not just the GST. That’s right, it saved businesses money they could have given back to average Canadians. Laura Mathews
Crossing analysis incomplete Editor: Some time ago former premier Christy Clark announced to the press the provincial government had decided to replace the George Massey Tunnel with an eight- to 10-lane bridge. This followed a period where five options were out in public view for comment and analysis. As the news was a surprise to all, and being an Optimist columnist at that time, I filed a freedom of information request with the premier’s office as to what documents she had relied upon in reaching this decision. The answer came back: “No documents were found.”
Next, I asked the senior project managers. Assembled together in their Richmond office, they told me: “Ian, it was high level” and “no notes were taken.” So, I was left to conclude a multi-billion dollar project was conceived, planned and estimated without reference to any papers. Since then thousands of pages of documents have been filed on the website. However, it took the new government to discover a very complete report for, and notes of, a meeting with the European experts who helped design the original tunnel and who have built many tunnels
and bridges around the world. That meeting took place soon after the premier’s announcement, and it appears the government did not seriously consider them or other options before rushing in with a bridge — modelled after what is up the river. So now our mayor is in Ottawa promoting the bridge. On what basis? It was not the logical choice at the beginning (no serious consideration of alternatives) and it might be an expensive boondoggle. Who knows when experts for the other choices have not been consulted? Ian Robertson
Can’t move commuters pushed out of cars
Editor: Re: Drivers could pay more to reduce congestion, May 30 It appears that we have now reached a milestone in government whereby politicians and bureaucrats can solve any problem with a tax. The unfortunate reality is that while a punitive tax scheme may support an ideology, it does not provide a solution for the citizens it is supposed to serve. If we accept their assumptions when it
comes to mobility pricing, do we have the infrastructure to support transporting the 25 to 30 per cent of commuters that give up their cars? I think we all know the answer to that question. As far as the other assumption that commutes would be faster and governments would collect $1 billion, maybe my math is fuzzy but aren’t they losing approximately $100 per month per car commuter if they give up their car? You know, that 50 cents a litre that we pay
to fill up our tank? But this isn’t about what serves the public, or what makes sense, is it? This is about supporting an ideology that believes punitive taxes (fees) for driving a car are justified. Does is it matter that municipal governments across the Lower Mainland are pushing high density city centres? So, they create congestion and then decide they need to tax it. Beautiful, only government could get away with that. Richard Nemeth

Say hello to Hulk
Are you looking for about fifty odd pounds of FUN?? Then look no further! Hulk is a one year old bully boy who thinks growing up is for... well... old people! This guy is a party animal who loves people; new people, old people, anyone he can cover in slobbery kisses. As an outgoing and super friendly extrovert, Hulk hopes to hook up with an energetic family who can keep up with him! Since one of his favorite hobbies is “Run Around Like Crazy & Knock The Human Over”, older kids would be best. He can be quite gregarious during play dates with other dogs... let’s just say Hulk is still working on his manners and proper canine etiquette. Hulk broke his elbow somewhere along the way, and it went neglected and untreated until he came into rescue. Short term he requires supplements, anti inflammatory medicine and possible therapy. Long term, he may require surgery, which PB&Chi agrees to cover and include in their adoption contract. Hulk is great in his crate, quite reasonable on leash, and house broken (Buddy knows how to potty!) If you think you can provide the leadership and understanding Hulk wants (as well as the mutual zest for life!), you just gotta meet this lovable guy! As with all our dogs, he is neutered and up to date on all shots and vaccines. If you are interested in meeting Hulk, email us at pbandchi@gmail.com

North Delta Lions Club donation benefits Mountain View Manor
The North Delta Lions Club has donated $3,000 to Delta Hospital to go towards priority equipment needs for Mountain View Manor, the hospital’s residential care facility. Opened in 1977, Mountain View Manor provides a home for 92 residents who require complex care and can no longer live safely or independently at home. The donation will go towards the purchase of much needed Roho mattresses. These specialized mattresses are vital in providing pressure management for those who are lying or resting for longer periods of time and who are at high risk for tissue breakdown. “All thanks to this donation we are able to ensure our residents are comfortable while also being able to minimize the risks associated with pressure wounds,” says Louise Setchell, manager of Mountain View Manor. “Delta Hospital and

DSS construction students tackle larger projects DAVE WILLIS

The Delta Secondary construction program offers hands-on, projectbased learning to students. “It’s not like every kid is building their little wood box or their cabinet. They’re actually all working together on a project that’s going to be seen to completion at a homeowner’s house,” explained instructor Casey Mynott. Students are currently working on a pair of sheds. One will stay in Ladner while the other will be going to Saltspring Island. Working with a homeowner is an interesting part of the program, Mynott said. It shows students, within the confines of a
school program, what a real jobsite looks like and gives them an idea how to interact with homeowners and work on people skills, he explained. “The scope of the program is to make sure kids get the experience of what residential house construction is like,” he said. Mynott was also excited to note the program is working with Penfolds, which is providing students a chance to work with new rubber roofing shingles which have been recycled from used tires. Mynott said anyone interested in working with the program to have a shed built can contact Delta Secondary at 604946-4194 and ask for him. Homeowners cover the cost of materials.

Delta Lifeboat sails into four U.S. ports on Puget Sound training deployment
The Delta Lifeboat was south of the border recently and took part in the Seattle Yacht Club’s opening day parade.
The Delta Lifeboat conducted a nine-day training deployment into the U.S. waters of Puget Sound this spring, making visits to Tacoma, Anderson Island, Bremerton and Seattle. The highlight was participating in the Seattle Yacht Club’s opening day parade. This a popular event where vessels of all descriptions either moor in two long lines in the passage between Lake Union and Lake
Washington or participate in the parade between the lines. The Delta Lifeboat sailed in company of many different vessels receiving applause and much praise. The City of Delta flag flew proudly from the mast for the whole event which brought attention to the fact that Delta borders Washington state. The lifeboat has already been invited to attend next year’s event.
Throughout the deployment volunteer crew members were warmly welcomed and entertained at several events. The serious side of the training is to help keep the crew’s skills at a high level of readiness. Two nighttime transits gave new crew members the experience of interfacing with commercial traffic in busy shipping lanes while navigating through restricted waterways.

Is hate winning? When we see the rage, crime, exploitation, terrorism and war in our world it sometimes feels like it. We typically respond to hate with force or more hate, and the cycle merely refreshes and repeats itself with renewed justification. Years ago someone said that terrorism can’t beat us because we have love. I was (and still am) intrigued by that statement. But is it true? Is love strong enough to conquer hate? When the Bible talks about love, it is referring to something much more robust than a fuzzy, feelgood sensation. It is an attitude that results in and is proven by action. he Ladner Village Market kicks off its 22nd season Sunday. The popular event, which features a wide variety of vendors, local merchants and live entertainment, attracts thousands of visitors to Ladner Village each summer. This year’s market is getting an infusion of fresh faces with 46 new vendors slated to take part over the course of the season. “There’s a lot of newness coming into the market this year,” says Tracey McKnight, one of the organizers. She notes some vendors have retired, many of which had been with the market since the beginning and helped it grow into what it is today. The open-air market spans three blocks on 48th Avenue from Elliott Street

With over 160 artisan vendors each date, the Ladner Village Market is one of western Canada’s largest open air markets. Shoppers can look out for a range of items including art, pet products, kids’ clothes, food products, jewelry, beauty products and fresh produce (in great abundance by the third market). Carnivorous plants will be at the first market only, McKnight notes. Food trucks, including a mac and cheese truck, will be at the market later in the summer. Talented buskers will also be performing throughout the season. The market still has openings for its vendor parking and street rep teams. Sidekick Players get ‘Wild’ When four men set off to find an isolated cabin in the forest on a “wildman” weekend, a la Robert Bly, everything that can go wrong does. The Sidekick Players Club will open a two-week run of The Wild Guys next week at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Andy, a men’s movement advocate, and Robin, a crystal-gazing New Ager, coax Stewart, an unsuspecting grocer, and Randall, a skeptical, city
lawyer, into reluctantly participating in malebonding ceremonies and communal hugs. The result? Hockey cheers and Neil Young singalongs. A fast-paced comedy by Andrew Wreggit and Rebecca Shaw, The Wild Guys is being directed for Sidekick by Carroll Lefebvre. The Wild Guys are four talented actors Lefebvre has had the privilege of working with before: Jeff Pannell (Randall), Todd-
Elliot Gates (Robin), Gerry Park (Stewart) and Brad Felton (Andy). This is a play for all ages and genders! Men, especially, will enjoy this look into the male psyche! The Wild Guys will be on the arts centre stage from June 13 to 23. There will be 8 p.m. performances Wednesday to Saturday as well as a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, June 17 (Father’s Day). Improve your workout with booty bands Well on Your Way P.J. WREN
If there’s one workout tool you should own, it’s a booty band. Booty bands, or glute bands, are resistance bands you wear around your thighs to get more muscle activation in your glutes and hips. More activation in these areas means a stronger rear end, a stronger stride (needed if you play sports), healthier knees that will be less susceptible to injury, better balance, less stress to your low back and more stability to your core. Unfortunately, a lot of us have weak glutes and hips. We just don’t activate our hips and glutes
enough on a day-to-day basis, and when we do in the gym, quite often we aren’t recruiting the right muscles. You see, the body will always take the path of least resistance, so your stronger and more dominant muscles will always try to kick in. This is why I love the booty band. With a few simple cues people can really fire up those glute and hip muscles and start to see some serious results. Booty bands are also joint-friendly, inexpensive and provide a more functional movement pattern, in comparison to machines and dumbbells. The bands add ascending resistance to your exercises, meaning the exercise gets tougher as you move through the full range of motion. That doesn’t happen with free weights, which give a constant resistance throughout the move. You can purchase booty bands at any fitness store for under $20. However, if you really want a great band, I highly recom-
mend Bret Contreras Hip Thruster band (https:// www.thehipthruster. com/). Conteras is the No. 1 glute training expert in the world (yes, there is such a thing) and this band is the bomb. They are the only ones we use at The Studio and recommend to our clients. As for booty band exercises, try the following as either a warm-up before your workout to activate your glutes (one to two sets, 15 reps) or as a finisher to really burn out the glutes after your workout (two to four sets, 15 to 20 reps). 1. Monster walks • Place the band just above the knees. • Sink into a squat by pushing the bum rearward, hold this position. • Take five monster steps forward, and then five back. • Aim for 30 seconds non-stop. 2. Bridge • Place the booty band just above the knees and position the feet close to the bum and hip width
Bridge
Monster walks apart. • Dig your heels into the ground and drive your hips as high as you can while using your outer hip muscles to keep the knees in line with the hips. • Pause at the top for three seconds and slowly return to start. 3. Bridge with frogs • Hold the bridge from above, but this time bring the feet together. • Using the outer hip muscles, open the knees as wide as you can and close. That’s one rep. • Keep the hips up for the entire set.
Bridge with frogs 4. Clams • Lie on your side with your hips, knees and feet stacked.

African children’s choir to play Ladner concert
The Watoto Children’s Choir will bring a message of hope for Africa’s orphans and widows when it performs a free concert in Ladner next week. Signs & Wonders will be presented on Tuesday, June 12 at 7 p.m. at Lighthouse Church, 5545 Ladner Trunk Rd. The choir, which has travelled extensively since 1994, has been performing in venues across Canada as part of its current six-month tour. It has returned to Canada with Signs & Wonders, a beautiful musical production that celebrates the joy of salvation. The dynamic production boasts a choir comprised of orphans and other vulnerable children. It presents new worship music from Watoto Church in Uganda and invites audiences to experience an encounter with
God. Luke Atabua is one of the children travelling with the choir. He was rescued by Baby Watoto in 2009. Like the story of thousands of other children cared for by Watoto, Luke was abandoned on the streets of Kampala. He was brought to Baby Watoto as a malnourished two-yearold. Fortunately, his story did not end there. Today, he is a very well-behaved young boy, with a passion for dance and hopes to accomplish much with his life. “I am excited to be travelling to Canada in 2018,” says 10-year-old Luke. “I cannot wait to share the love of Jesus with the people we sing to and meet. Through Watoto, God changed my life. I have a family, I go to school and I am happy.” Through their testimonies, the children share
stories of how their lives have been changed, and how they have been called into a life of purpose to transform their communities. Each story declares the miracle of transformation — from darkness to light; from despair to hope; from loss to purpose; from fear to faith. “This production challenges preconceived ideas about miracles,” says James Skinner, who produces and directs the production. “It demonstrates that each of our daily lives are signs and wonders of God’s work in us. This is evidenced by the miraculous transformation that Jesus works in people who were once lost, but are now found. We see this through the innocence of the child telling of their transformation from their dark past to the light that God has shown upon them.”
Billet Hosts Needed
Host families are asked to provide: • A private bedroom for a rider July 6 - 10 • A warm welcome for the rider’s stay in Delta “Ladner is so special in many ways. Volunteering as a host family for the Tour de Delta is one of the ways that I can give back by representing Ladner as a giving and caring community. I also learnt a lot about the racing community in Canada and my lady racer was certainly polite and respectful of my home. It was my pleasure to volunteer. I hope to do so again in the future.”

Bronze for Sun Devils at Soccer Provincials MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The South Delta Sun Devils have capped an outstanding season with a bronze medal finish at the B.C. AAA Girls Soccer Championships. The Sun Devils earned their third podium finish in five years with a 1-0 win over Victoria’s Reynold Roadrunners at UBC. Breanne Gallagher scored the game’s only goal when she deposited a terrific through ball from Sabrina Blocha. It marked a record 17th straight year the Sun Devils have advanced to the provincial championships and this team’s performance has to rank near the top for longtime coaches Stephen Burns and Brent Sweeney. South Delta’s line-up featured a number of Grade 8s and 9s yet it was ever-soclose to playing in the gold medal game. The Devils actually went undefeated in the tournament with a semi-final penalty kick loss to Fleetwood Park being their only blemish. “Stephen and I are extremely proud of what this young team was able to accomplish. Not only a great finish in the Provincials but one of the closest groups we’ve ever had,” said Sweeney. “The feeling after the presentation of our medals for the girls was how excited they are for next year and we are too.” The South Delta roster also featured: Hannah Dela Cruz, Brooke Stoilen, Jenny Campbell, Emily Birarda, Eve

The bronze medal triumph followed a dramatic second day that saw the Sun Devils come out on both ends of a penalty kick shootouts. The Devils dominated territorial play for much of of their match against Fleetwood Park, producing three high quality chances but could not score.
Following a goalless overtime, the twotime defending champions from Surrey prevailed in a shootout. The result came just three hours after South Delta had delivered the same fate to the Argyle Pipers to secure the final four berth. The North Shore champion Pipers scored in the early going and pressed for an insurance marker but couldn’t get another shot past Sun Devils goalkeeper Jenny Campbell. corner kick, resulting in an own goal to tie the game. The teams went directly to a shootout to determine the group winner and Campbell came up with a pair of saves while her teammates converted four of five attempts to win in dramatic fashion. “This is all our girls do. They battle and they battle,” said co-coach Stephen Burns. “It may be a young team but this is a special group.” South Delta opened the championships with round-robin wins over Mt Boucherie (3-1) and Riverside (2-1).

Dream trip to Grand Prix in Montreal for kart racer MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It’s a weekend of a lifetime for Kieran Hartley on auto racing’s greatest stage. The Grade 4 Sacred Heart student is in Montreal for the Formula 1 circuit’s Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday. Hartley was one of 20 young racers from across the country picked to be part of the F1 Stars of the Future — a program launched to promote motorsports to youth. He will be escorted onto the track by one of the Formula 1 drivers for the pre-race ceremony and stand alongside his idols during the national anthem. He was the lone B.C. resident selected among the children who range from seven to 10 years of age. Hartley’s growing passion for racing dates back to three years ago when he tried out for a driver’s scholarship and won one of 10 spots to race a kid-kart for the year at a track in Washington State. He went on to win the overall championship and progressed to a faster kart the following year. The success continued with more victories and also recognized as most
improved junior driver at his home track. Last year, his schedule expanded to more travel throughout the Pacific Northwest with his cart equipped with a new chassis and engine package. He dominated his division to the point where it was time for another challenge. Hartley shifted his home track to the Greg Moore Raceway in Chilliwack with another significant upgrade to his kart. His 2018 season has provided plenty of challenges so far and already produced a pair wins. When Hartley returns from Montreal he will be preparing for an exciting summer schedule that will see him travel to Alberta and Saskatchewan to line-up against other top 10-to-12-year-olds from Western Canada for the opportunity to represent the region at the 2018 Rotax Grand Finals in Brazil. Regardless of the outcome, it will be an invaluable experience racing at this level for the first time on new tracks against much bigger field of racers. The 55th edition of the Canadian Grand Prix will be take place at the 4.361 km long Circuit Gilles Villeneuve — named after the It was a successful 2017 season to say the least for Kieran Hartley. Now the young South Delta racer will be a special guest this weekend in Montreal. legendary Formula One driver.

She passed away suddenly at Delta Hospital on Saturday June 2, 2018, with her loving family by her side. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Sheila was a prairie girl at heart and spent much of her youth in Dauphin, Manitoba before moving to Coquitlam, BC, with her family. It was while working at a bank in Coquitlam where she met the love of her life, Barry Munden, who was mesmerized by her strawberry blonde hair and smile. It wasn’t long before Barry and Sheila made it official and wed on October 14, 1972. Soon after Sheila and Barry settled in Tsawwassen, along with her loving parents William and Janice Hanbury, and younger brother Grant. A devoted mother and wife, Sheila left her career to dedicate herself to raising her family and working part-time to support her father’s expanding business. Fiercely loyal and protective of her clan, she suffered with debilitating arthritis for decades, yet always took care of her family first, including caring for her parents in their later years. She cherished annual family reunions in Parksville, BC, and loved to dine out with family and friends. Sheila is survived by her dear husband Barry, two sons, Jason (Faby) and Scott, daughter Lauren, along with her grandchildren Alejandra and Anna, both of whom she adored. She is also survived by her brother, Grant (Michelle), as well as her loving nieces and nephew (Nicolle, Claire, Devan and John).
MACDONALD, James (Jim/Kiwi) August 23, 1930 - May 29, 2018 It is with sad hearts and great sorrow that we announce the passing of James (Kiwi) Macdonald of Ladner, BC. He is survived by his wife Bernice (Bea), stepson John Sumner (Catrin Owen), Louisa Flinn and grandchildren; Madelaine, Alexandra, Ben and Emmy. James was born and raised in New Zealand, emigrating to Vancouver, Canada in time for his 21st birthday. After working for a brief time at the Shell Oil Company he was hired by the CHWK Radio Station in Chilliwack where he wrote commercials and played piano “live” at noon. He worked his way into the newsroom and eventually became editor. In December of 1956, Canada’s worst air disaster turned into the broadcast “scoop” that changed Jim’s life forever. In the spring following the winter tragedy, and acting on a tip, Jim (Vancouver CKWX Radio’s stringer in the Fraser Valley) broke the story that Elfrida Piqou and two companions had found fuselage wreckage on Mount Slesse near Chilliwack. They got the broadcast story of the year. The next day CKWX hired Jim away from the Fraser Valley, introducing him to big city radio. He supplemented his broadcasting income by playing piano at the Smilin’ Buddha Cabaret, where he met beautiful Bernice Ortwein - for the first time. She was the love of his life - he just didn’t know it at the time. After a storied career in radio as crime beat and city hall reporter, Jim became a talk show host and interviewer know for his ability to use the pregnant pause to get his guests to open up. From radio he became a well-known face on Channel 8 (black and white) Television. Jim later returned to Chilliwack and the cabaret world as co-founder of the Answer Cabaret with his partner and fellow bon vivant, Bill Wosk. When the cabaret sold, Jim became a food and beverage executive with the Harrison Hot Springs Hotel for 14 years. Later he was the manager of the Lougheed Hotel in Vancouver, and the hotel owners sent him to his homeland down and under to conduct business in Auckland and Wanganui. After over a year in New Zealand, he returned to Vancouver to open dowtown’s Suites at Conference Plaza. At this time, serendipity smiled on Jim once more and he and Bea met again at a funeral for a mutual friend. Thirty years since their last meeting, the flame was still alight, and in 2000 eager not to make the same mistake twice, Jim and Bea began life together. They have lived lovingly and harmoniously for 18 blissful years in South Pointe, Ladner, BC. Kiwi - a brilliant raconteur, a gentleman with the kindest heart, and a faithful friend to so many, will be much missed and remembered with love and laughter. Until we meet again, we expect you to be telling jokes and tinkling the ivories in that most glamorous of cabaret venues. Good night, sweet Prince
Her kindness, feistiness, sweet disposition and dark sense of humour will be remembered and forever cherished. At her request, no service will be held. A private family internment will take place. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Delta Hospital Foundation. Online Condolences may be offered at www.deltafuneral.ca Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
