Tsawwassen Special Olympics athlete Kim Davies carries the torch through Ladner last Friday as part of the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run supported by the Delta Police Department.
Someone or something is harming dogs in Ladner, raising the alarm of residents on social media and Delta police. The police confirm there have been three incidents of suspected dog poisonings since May, which have either been reported to police or police have reached out to the owners after seeing posts on the Ladner’s Landing Facebook group. DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf said the first incident occurred in mid-May on River Road. “It appears to be an isolated incident, and it is unclear as to what caused the dog’s death in this case,” said Leykauf. Another incident occurred in late May on 52A Street when a dog owned by June Mark was the victim of apparent poisoning. The initial report was that someone might have laced hot dogs thrown into Mark’s backyard that Kleopatra ate, got very sick and subsequently died of kidney failure three days later. “Investigators spoke with June and canvassed the neighbourhood,” added Leykauf. “Toxicology reports are being done because the dog may have

Trustees pitch track plan Proposal would see new surface at South Delta Secondary by September SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta’s board of education is pitching a deal to the city to upgrade track facilities. At a liaison committee meeting last week, a couple of motions were endorsed, proposals that will go to Delta council for consideration. Those motions were made public at the board’s meeting Tuesday. Chair Laura Dixon said the first motion is for the track at South Delta Secondary in Tsawwassen to be resurfaced with the school district and Delta splitting the cost. If council agrees, the project would take place this summer so it could be ready for the new school year. The second motion is more complex, requiring both the district and city to work together to fund a new eight-lane, cushioned track at North Delta Secondary. That deal involves a grant application being made as soon as this August to the province, which is being given money by Ottawa for infrastructure and community projects, as well as a land deal that would see the city take ownership of the site. Dixon explained the move is necessary because city projects could be eligible for funding from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, but the same doesn’t apply to school districts.

In an effort to address safety issues, the Delta School District recently removed the rubber surface from the track at South Delta Secondary and painted lines on the asphalt underneath. “Basically, I’m trying to create the political will for us to move forward and line ourselves up for this grant,” Dixon added. She said if the city is interested in moving ahead, negotiations would have to be held in-camera for the land transaction. School district staff in recent weeks removed the rubber track at SDSS and painted lines on the asphalt surface underneath. The district explained the surfac-
ing issue needed to be addressed to ensure a safe track for the immediate future. Hoping to utilize new provincial funding to replace the district’s shabby track at SDSS, as well as have a new track facility at a North Delta high school, the board last fall approached the city about what it would take to bring together all three levels of government and perhaps other funding partners. Trustees noted thousands
of Delta residents would benefit from such facilities. Council members expressed initial reluctance, citing the uncertain cost as well as the long list of other parks and recreation projects seeking money, but tracks have become a political issue with two of the mayoral candidates in the upcoming civic election pledging to address the issue. At a Delta parks, recreation and culture commission meeting, it was noted
the base project cost for track facilities was estimated at $2.4 million to $4 million, with options pushing that figure toward $6 million. While school district pushes forward trying to get a new track facility for North Delta Secondary, the existing rubberized track at Seaquam Secondary in North Delta, which is showing its age and in need of refurbishment, has not been part of the conversation.
Police say it’s unclear what has caused poisonings
CONTINUED from Page 1 Kiana Mills wrote on Facebook that she had to rush her dog Butters to the vet after she was lethargic, her eyes were glazed over and she was unbalanced. “The vet informed me that she had been poisoned or ate something that had drugs or poison in it,” said Mills. “She was only in our backyard in Ladner and walked around our complex near Save-on-Foods. She is only a little PomeranianChihuahua cross. I was lucky to notice the signs right away and get her in.” Mills said Butters is on
the way to a full recovery. Area resident Carrie Bee also posted in the Landing Facebook group last weekend that she had to take her dog Sadie to an emergency clinic in Langley where she was diagnosed with THC poisoning. Bee suspects the dog ate a discarded marijuana cigarette while out walking in Ladner Village. “We understand news of pets eating poisonous substances is upsetting and unsettling for the community. We appreciate the role of the media and social media in getting the word out to all pet owners
to take appropriate precautions to safeguard their pets,” Leykauf said. “At this point it is unclear what may have caused the poisonings. We simply don’t have enough information yet to point to any definitive cause. Should any pet owner suspect their pet may have been poisoned, we ask that you take them to the vet, and if the source seems suspicious, to contact police.”

Tuesday’s meeting. Dixon also commended him for showing a “trajectory” as a trustee over the years. Milat said he believes the district is moving in the right direction. In the 2011 election, Milat ran for both Delta council as well as school board. He didn’t get a council seat but finished second in the polls for school board, behind only Dixon. The civic election takes place Oct. 20.

First elected in 2002, after unsuccessful attempts in two previous elections, Milat, 42, thanked the residents of Delta for the opportunity to be involved in the public education system. “Serving on the board has been a rewarding experience for me. The relationships that I have developed with educators in the district are something I will cherish for a lifetime. But most of all, I want to thank the teachers, administration and staff who work daily to provide the best education to our students,” said the Delta Secondary grad. Signs of conversion to disappear
Canada Post to return areas earmarked for community mailboxes to original state SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
They’re a reminder how close Ladner came to losing home mail delivery, but soon they’ll be gone. A letter to Delta MP Carla Qualtrough from an official with the Canada Post Corporation explained that, in the coming weeks, the postal service will begin removal of concrete pads, paving stones and other materials and equipment that had been installed in anticipation of converting to community mailboxes. “This conversion will not occur and these sites were never put into service. After we clear each site, we will lay down fresh soil and sod to help restore it to its original state. If necessary, we will rebuild the curb in front of the site,” the notice explains. Approximately 39 sites will require attention and it’s anticipated the work will be completed by early October. Earlier this year, Qualtrough announced that home mail delivery

Newer subdivisions will continue to be serviced by community mailboxes but home delivery will be maintained for all others in Delta. would continue for Ladner and other communities across the country that hadn’t already been converted. When the conver-
sion program was announced by the previous Conservative government, Ladner was the first community in the Lower Mainland targeted. By
November 2015, close to 5,000 Ladner residences could have lost their home delivery. Delta has about 39,000 addresses, approximately
28,000 of which still get mail delivery at the door. Not having door-to-door has been a fact of life for years for newer housing developments and multifamily complexes, but the switch to community mailboxes for homes that have always had delivery didn’t go over well. A few weeks after the last federal election, the conversion was suspended. Now it’s been terminated. Qualtrough said the home delivery issue was something she heard loud and clear during the election campaign and in the first few months as MP. “We undertook a review and I will say that Delta provided a ton of feedback because it was so near and dear to the hearts of South Deltans who were facing this,” she said. The City of Delta has also been notified by Canada Post about the pad removal. Coun. Jeannie Kanakos noted that home mail delivery “is integral to our quality of life and especially important for our seniors.”
Lotto prize not claimed yet
Someone out there in South Delta has a $300,000-plus lottery windfall still waiting to be claimed. On June 1 no one won the $60 million Lotto Max grand prize but there were plenty of other smaller prizes won. According to the B.C. Lottery Corporation, someone in South Delta was one of three to split a Max Millions $1 million prize, winning $333,333. The other two winners were from Ontario and Quebec. Media relations spokesperson Angela Law confirmed with the Optimist that nobody has come forward yet to claim the prize. Law did say the ticket was sold in South Delta, but could not say where. On the same June 1 Lotto Max draw, someone in Delta matched six out of seven numbers (including the bonus) to win $96,523. The lottery corporation won’t specify what part of Delta that ticket was purchased in, but Law did say the winner, A. Muthiah, has claimed the prize.

Distraction thieves at work in Ladner and Vancouver IAN JACQUES

Delta police are investigating a case of distraction-style theft, a crime that has been reported with increasing frequency in the region. A person reported that while they were walking in the 4700-block of Ladner’s 57th Street on June 2 a vehicle stopped and an occupant asked for directions to the hospital. After directions were provided, the female in the vehicle insisted the complainant take a gold necklace as a gift and placed the necklace around the complainant’s neck. When the complainant returned home they realized their own necklace, valued at $1,300, was missing and had been exchanged for the gift necklace. DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf said this incident is the lone distraction-style theft that has been reported recently
to police. Leykauf said if any other residents have encountered this kind of theft they should contact police at 604-946-4411. Meanwhile, Vancouver police are warning the public to be vigilant after receiving reports of eight distraction thefts in just under a month. The thefts involve strangers getting out of vehicles and approaching men and women wearing necklaces and rings. The thieves make various excuses to make physical contact with the victims. Some suspects are conversational and offer free or inexpensive jewelry, while others appear frantic asking for directions. “These thieves are smooth and quickly get into your personal space. Victims usually don’t realize their jewelry has been taken until after the crooks are gone,” said VPD spokesperson Const. Jason Doucette.

Ladner parrots looking for forever homes
Greyhaven stepping up adoption efforts for 70 birds that were moved to local farm last month IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Rescued parrots that have found sanctuary in Ladner are now in search of their forever homes. Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary rescued the birds in the spring of 2016 from the World Parrott Refuge on Vancouver Island. Earlier this month, the birds found new refuge in Ladner after a twoyear stay at a space in Vancouver. Greyhaven’s communication director Jan Robson
said the birds and volunteers are grateful for the generosity of the family that offered space in South Delta, but it is time for the birds to find permanent homes. “We have been adopting out for almost two years, but we are now stepping up the adoption efforts,” said Robson. “We have three that will soon be heading out east – to Nova Scotia and another one is being adopted out locally. Over the past two years we have a lot of birds and we have a lot of interest, but people that are interested
and able to have parrots as pets are a little bit more of a limited commodity I think than the dog and cat population.” She said more than 400 of the birds that were rescued in 2016 have been adopted, leaving about 70 in Ladner and 25 to 30 more in another location. People looking to adopt should do their research beforehand, Robson said. Information on the adoption process, along with an adoption form, is on the group’s website at www.greyhaven.bc.ca. You can also email info@grey-
haven.bc.ca. “When you go to our adoption section many of the birds are profiled and you can see pictures,” she said. “From there you need to fill out the application and the process starts from there.” Robson said there is an adoption fee, which varies depending on the bird. “If people are serious about adopting they will pay that fee. We are also a non-profit and we have to cover costs to a certain extent. The birds that are left we have been caring for more than two years,
so there has been medical costs and the adoption fee certainly helps pay for that.” Robson the biggest thing for people is to have a willingness to learn even if they have had parrots as pets before. “We want people who come in with an open mind and what is the best way to care for these birds,” she said. “We also need to have people that have some financial resources. We can’t guarantee the long-term health considering what these birds have gone through,

Town & Country Inn will be open through the summer SANDOR GYARMATI

The old hotel will be around for a little while longer. The Delta Town & Country Inn was expected to be demolished this summer to make way for Gateway’s $70-million casino-hotel complex, however that’s been changed as the 49-room hotel is to remain operating a little longer than that, said owner Ron Toigo. “We haven’t got a firm date yet. It (the casino approval process) has to go through B.C. Lotteries (corporation) and such, but we’re definitely going
to be open through the summer and probably into early fall,” Toigo told the Optimist. Delta council gave conditional approval to the casino proposal following a contentious two-day public hearing last month. It still must receive final approval before construction can begin. Called Cascades Casino Delta, the new complex at the junction of highways 17A and 99 in Ladner would include a hotel of 116 to 124 rooms, restaurants and meeting space, while the casino is to have 500 slot machines and 24 gaming tables. It is expected to open in 2020.

as the pendulum swung that far the other way? After rampant growth in Delta in the 1960s and ’70s, a movement took hold in the 1980s that aimed to slow development in an effort to maintain what was considered a good thing. It became a rather easy sell as Delta was looked upon as an enviable community, one that hadn’t lost its small town charm despite what was going on throughout a burgeoning region. The movement was highlighted by the record-setting TDL public hearing in 1989, which was followed the next year by the election of a like-minded council that ruled throughout the ’90s. That stance has softened somewhat in the last couple of decades, most notably evidenced by the approval of a housing development for the contentious Southlands property in Tsawwassen, but there’s still a sizable contingent out there that isn’t keen to see a whole lot change. You see them show up to voice their concerns at every larger-scale development proposal that comes before Delta council. I offer the history lesson because I think housing is going to play a significant role in this fall’s civic election as Delta in 2018 is walking a fine line between changing to adapt to market forces and maintaining a desirable status quo. It’s still early in the campaign, but those already out of the gate have been talking about the need to make housing more affordable, to provide more choices and to allow young families and empty nesters to find suitable homes. It makes perfect sense and it will appeal to many caught in the housing crunch, but it means increasing density, which translates into more people, more traffic, more congestion and a general change in character. Yes, it can be done carefully and tastefully, but there’s a segment of the electorate that’s not fond of such an approach, yet I haven’t heard anyone appeal to that constituency. I realize it’s not 1990 any more so they don’t wield the power they once did, but they still make up a considerable contingent, one that might well come to the polls in greater numbers in October. There’s no doubt the pendulum is swinging away from them, but given where it began, they still possess might that could well have an impact on the outcome of the election.
NDP’s pipeline opposition is all about keeping Green support
T
here have recently been letters and articles in the Optimist concerning the pipelines from Alberta coming to the coast. Our current provincial government is opposing Alberta and the feds on the construction of this pipeline, which I don’t believe has anything to do with climate change or the environment. If the NDP supported the pipelines, it would lose the support of the Greens and as a result control of government. It’s as simple as that. I also take issue with all the protesters who proclaim doom and gloom for the forest and waterways of B.C. Do people really believe that corporations are going to spend billions of dollars to construct pipelines that leak? Of course there will be issues, usually caused by human error, that will cost these corporations millions to clean up, so I believe they are very motivated to be responsible. It is my understanding that many of the well organized protests receive financial support from U.S. entities. Why would people and firms in the U.S. donate that money? Well if you

owned stocks in the U.S. gas and oil and for a few bucks could keep your competitors’ oil land locked in Alberta, why wouldn’t you do that? And if Alberta wants to use rail cars to transport its oil to the coast then American investors who own large amounts of Canadian railway stock make great money with no pipeline. The one thing I have never understood is why the pipeline is protested and delayed which causes the oil to be transported down the Fraser River canyon by train. If 60 cars of oil go into the river can you imagine the damage and clean-up costs as the oil will spread the length of the river into Delta.
My last point on this topic is the provincial debt, which I believe stands around $43 billion. How is the province ever going to pay this off? Tax B.C. wine? Tax salmon? Increase the cost of ferry tickets? Gas and oil is the only commodity, which if taxed reasonably and all revenue from that tax applied to the debt, has any chance of making inroads to pay the debt down or off. • On another note, you might recall that in my last column I asked for Attorney General David Eby’s assistance to have a question added to this fall’s civic election ballot, only in South Delta, asking residents if they want the casino planned for the Delta Town & Country Inn site. So far no response has been received, so I’m asking my readers that if they agree with the idea, maybe they could contact the attorney general themselves to also request a ballot question. You never know, if both of you do that it might make a difference. Greg Hoover is a project manager in industrial and commercial construction who has lived with Christina in Tsawwassen for 25 years.

Council must understand density comes at a cost
Editor: Re: Increasing density allows all generations to live close by, Community Comment, June 8 I read Mike Schneider’s column with some interest. The notion of increasing density certainly has some validity in terms of saving farmland, making transit systems more viable and community services more affordable. However, it all comes at a cost. Whether we can actually make housing more affordable by adding more supply is questionable. I would also ask what Schneider means by “keeping our community intact.” When density is increased, it would be hard to retain our existing sense of “community.” Crime increases, community character and identity changes, traffic is impaired and, I would suggest, more stress is inherent in life in general as we cope with higher density. Schneider suggests these issues as well as
housing costs can be addressed by an incoming Delta council. Sadly all of the slates running for council contain elements of the previous council, a council that addressed these issues by issuing building permits for 674 units at Marina Garden Estates in Ladner, 980 units at the Southlands and a 350-unit high-rise in North Delta. None of these developments dealt in any way with making housing affordable. Any council is only as good as its planning department and the information it provides. Councillors are seldom elected for their planning ability and often have specific biases that can get in the way of planning. As well, any planning for additional density needs to be preceded by the installation of infrastructure appropriate to that density. This is generally expensive and unpopular with councils. As a result, a planning strategy based on densi-
fication is taken on and sold to the community as good for the economy and the tax base. Less regard is given to the manner of densification or the societal issues brought on by the strategy. Employment is limited within Tsawwassen, so we can safely assume most of the traffic from the Southlands will drive to work via 56th Street. Planned redevelopment of the Town Centre Mall will add more vehicles to our roads. The planning department has undertaken a traffic study for this development. The traffic capacity of 56th Street limits Tsawwassen development. A viable traffic alternative needs to be developed. Until then, any development adding traffic to 56th Street needs to be seriously reconsidered. Density comes at a cost. The community needs to be informed of these costs and involved with any densification strategy. Peter van der Velden

Editor: Re: Residents in Boundary Bay deserve a tax rebate for road work delays, letter to the editor, June 6 In response to the letter demanding a tax rebate for residents of Boundary Bay for road work delays, I would trust that residents of South Delta have not formulated a negative opinion toward the majority of residents within the Boundary Bay area. The letter is a denigrating, derogatory missive toward all the hard-working tradespeople as well as the flag people who ensure the flow of single-lane traffic in either direction is balanced at all times. Allow me to remind the letter writer of all the other necessary upgrade projects now ongoing in Tsawwassen, including

Road and utility work is taking place all over Tsawwassen, including on 12th Avenue. those on Beach Grove Road, 12th Avenue and 52nd Street. I have never heard of any outbursts about the day-to-day disruptions these residents are having to put up with for projects that are longer
in duration. It’s also worth mentioning at this juncture that all these necessary upgrades are being financed by our very own municipal tax dollars. Morris Ross
Best not to make erroneous assumptions
Editor: Re: Residents in Boundary Bay deserve a tax rebate for road work delays, letter to the editor, June 6 So Paula Ralston wants a tax rebate because she lives in Boundary Bay and is confronted with minor
delays due to the roadworks? Seriously? I, too, live in Boundary Bay and I face the same delays but I don’t assume the flag people are looking at Facebook as she asserts and it is certainly more than, as she puts it, “five
guys looking in a hole.” Work is being done daily — by all involved — and once completed we will all benefit so let’s not make erroneous and invidious assumptions and let’s not denigrate the people doing the work. B. McKenna

Say hello to Fiona Fiona is a “seven” year old chi mix who weighs ten pounds. This sweet girl is medium energy and is very shy at first. It takes some time for her to warm up and become comfortable so she will need a patient home that will help her boost her confidence. Fiona loves females and is fairly quick at opening up to them but has some trust issues with males. It can take a while for her to open up to them, but once she does, she gets up on the couch and sits with them and loves their attention. She has been socialized with both big and little dogs and we have had no problems, and cats seem acceptable too! A home with another dog is best suited for Fiona as it will help her gain confidence. Fiona’s fosters have been working with her and children, and did have Fiona around their four year old nephew. They noticed that she barks every time because of her shy nature, so a home with older children who are better able to understand her is more suitable for her. Fiona has been able to spend her nights on the couch (where she prefers!) and not have a single accident. She is great on leash and also food motivated which helps with training. She does know her basic commands but they need some fine tuning. As with all of our dogs she is spayed and up to date on her shots. If you think you may be the perfect forever home that this little princess is looking for, please email us at pbandchi@gmail.com or fill out an application at www.pbandchi.com

Answer found in recommitting to public health care system JIM SINCLAIR
Optimist contributor
Some time ago an American expat working as a taxi driver made one of the most profound statements I’ve ever heard about Canadian health care. The man was drawn here by the love of a Canadian woman, but he fell in love again when he realized that in Canada he no longer lived in fear that his health insurance would not cover a serious illness. Before coming here, he said he was a strong Republican who rejected out of hand any attempt to have Canadian-style medicine in the United States. The provincial government decision to activate changes to the Medicare Protection Act should help lessen the fear in everyone. These changes were long overdue – they were drafted in 2003 – stopping doctors from extra-billing for medical surgeries and procedures that are covered under our health care system. Extra-billing is a nice way to put it. Put another way it is queue jumping, and it not only undercuts the most basic foundation of our system, it is directly eroding our ability to provide health care in the most tangible way possible — in our collective pocket books. The federal government recently reduced the health-care transfer pay-
Jim Sinclair ment to British Columbia by $15.9 million. That’s $15.9 million we cannot use to provide equal and fair health care to all. Private clinics that are breaking the law are not saving us money, they are costing us federal funding. It’s time for the myth of private pay not hurting the public system to end. Every day Fraser Health works to make the system more efficient, but we know that in British Columbia we do face some real challenges. Last year we had the second lowest health-care spending per capita of any province, according to the latest report from Canadian Institute for Health Information. The answer lies in recommitting to pub-
lic health care, to equal access to health care, to health care based upon need not upon the size of a person’s wallet. That’s why at Fraser Health this year we are increasing the number of hip and knee surgeries by 23 per cent or 836 additional surgeries and the number of MRIs by 14 per cent or 7,770 additional exams (private MRIs simply allow patients with money to move up the waiting list while others wait longer for care as a result). As Canadians, we believe in taking care of each other. That’s the fundamental principle that underpins the Canadian health-care system. Most people trace the start of Canadian health care to Tommy Douglas in the
1960s, but the truth is the first health-care program in Canada started in Cape Breton as early as 1883. The miners in the Glace Bay District pooled a small part of their wages each week so they could collectively afford to take their children to the doctor when they were sick – something they could never do by themselves. More than a century has gone by and it is essentially the same principle today. We put our money in. A lot of people don’t use it, but when they need it, they get the best care possible no matter who they are. If Cape Breton miners understood the power of public health care more than 100 years ago and a Republican taxi driver from the U.S. can acknowledge that he used to live in fear, I say it is time to leave fear behind and embrace hope. We need to continue to embrace our public health-care system and we need to continue to make the changes and the investments necessary to make it the best in the world for all British Columbians. And to be clear, those investments do not include paying millions in fines because we allow private for-profit companies to continue extra billing practices. Jim Sinclair is the new chair of the Fraser Health board.

Local auto body shop marks Canadian first Tsawwassen Collision only shop to be certified for both Honda and Acura collision repairs
Tsawwassen Collision has become the first certified ProFirst Collision Repair Facility in Canada, certified for both Honda and Acura collision repairs. Peter Sziklai, owner of the South Delta shop since 1995, had already pursued his I-Car Gold certification when he applied to Honda. “The ProFirst certification requirements are understandably rigorous, but with the ongoing training and equipment upgrades we have been making over the last several years the process was smooth,” he said. For Sziklai, who has long believed in the importance of truly safe and correct repairs, it was important to pursue the certification because he feels collision repair facilities need to put emphasis

us ahead of most people. Once I got going on this I recognized something a few years ago and changed the culture of our operation. We know what the rules are, we follow the rules. We at Tsawwassen Collision are very aware of how cars have to be fixed and fixed properly.”

Peter Sziklai has owned Tsawwassen Collision since 1995. It is estimated that only 20 per cent of repair shops currently meet the rigorous Gold Class Standard. Sziklai said these certifications from original equipment manufacturers lead to better quality and safety for his customers. “We do view it as a
real achievement,” he said. “There was a lot of work over the last several years from all the staff at Tsawwassen Collision. We are a single independent facility in a relatively small community, so people may think that we are simply an OK small town
repair shop. In fact, we have a very progressive corporate culture, top line equipment and excellent training. This accreditation, from Honda Canada, provides outside verification of our efforts and performance and we are very proud of being the first.”

Grade 6 student designs prosthetic hand for fair IAN JACQUES

Southpointe Academy in Tsawwassen has a budding scientist in its midst. Grade 6 student Ishan Leung was recently selected as one of the 30 finalists in CBC’s inaugural science fair last month. More than 100 students from across the province submitted their projects and 30 were selected to showcase their innovations. Leung was selected for
his project called Grab & Go, a prototype for a prosthetic hand. “On my computer, I coded a program that runs autonomously to move the hand. It uses servo motors to turn and pull the strings,” Leung said. “This moves the fingers up and down. The strings act like tendons in a real human hand. However, this is only a prototype to build a fully functioning model. My project will help to benefit all people because it is a low priced prosthetic hand
that can be afforded by everyone.”

A Tsawwassen fashion designer received an honourary degree this week during convocation ceremonies at Simon Fraser University. Dorothy Grant was among six distinguished individuals who will be honoured for their accomplishments that are making a difference at home and around the world. For more than three decades, Grant has been combining traditional Haida art with contemporary fashion design to create garments that evoke self-respect and pride for First Nations culture. A graduate of Vancouver’s Helen LeFeaux School of Fashion
Design, Grant premiered her first fashion collection in 1989 under the Feastwear label. Her Haida-inspired clothing has since appeared around the world on fashion runways, on the red carpet, and in museum and gallery collections. A successful entrepreneur, she continues to produce three fashion labels from her Tsawwassen studio, leading the way for new generations of Indigenous designers across North America. In 2015 she received the Order of Canada for her “contributions to the fashion industry as an artist, designer and mentor.” Besides the honourary degrees, SFU will grant degrees to more than 4,700 students this week.

right here amongst us, if we could only allow our hearts to be transformed just like the seed is transformed into the “greatest of all shrubs.” This weekend, I am going to be “transformed,” I’m certain! I will be travelling with two grandchildren to Disneyland. When we arrive there, I’ll not see the mechanics of the rides or the costumed characters, but will see joy and hearts transformed by simple goodness. Oh, if we could only have such transformation in our world! To see the simple joy of working together to build God’s kingdom, here and now!

My goodness, the stakes on the world stage keep escalating and many become fearful of what tomorrow will bring. But before we panic, let’s continue to sow seeds of peace and justice for all — that’s what Jesus seems to teach us when he says, “… the kingdom of God is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs…” The seeds of justice are sown even before we rise, but the “soil” of our hearts and minds must be ready to receive even the smallest of seeds. Then the seeds can take

acers will be speeding down 6th Avenue in Tsawwassen tomorrow during the third annual Soap Box Derby. Presented by the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen and the City of Delta, the event will see three racers head
down the hill at a time beginning at 11 a.m. The fun family event will have food trucks, face painting and an awards ceremony at the intersection of 6th Avenue and 52nd Street. “There’s a lot going on over there,” says event chair and Rotary Club of Tsawwassen member Maggie Dorf. Nearly 50 racers will
take part. Participants come out of the starting gates at Milsom Wynd and roll towards the finish line at 52nd Street. “It’s 100 per cent family fun. It’s just a total family orientated event in our community. That’s absolutely the best part about it,” says Dorf. The derby takes months to put together and is fortunate to have volunteers
“who put in time and hours and energy to bring this to life,” says Dorf. “I think it’s phenomenal. It’s my first year as chair and I’m blown away at the support, the free hours that everyone puts in to make this thing such a huge success,” she says. A new aspect of this year’s event is a show ‘n shine taking place tonight at the Save-On-Foods in
Tsawwassen. Carts will be shown off from 7 to 9 p.m. and a panel judges will select a “Best Cart” winner. The public can vote on a “Best Dressed” honour at tomorrow’s derby. Visit the Rotary club’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ RotaryClubOfTsawwassen) for more on the Soap Box Derby.
Tsawwassen Farmers Market has new location Tsawwassen is getting its farmers market back this Saturday with a new location – the Benediction Lutheran Church. “We are very excited about the move,” says market manager Anne Janzen. “The church has been incredibly accommodating to work with, allowing us to set up every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Many members have seen us struggle to find our footing over the years, and they have been eager to see Tsawwassen get a great local farmers market.” There will be a total of 12 events this season with each one featuring the freshest seasonal produce as it becomes available, she says.
The Tsawwassen Farmers Market will have baked items and produce. The market had been on hiatus since mid-summer last year. Opening day offers items from three bakeries, the best of Delta produce, fresh fruit from the Okanagan, and a smattering of gourmet food pro-
ducers, chefs and artisans. The market is launching with 15 curated vendors, with room to double that number over the summer. The market also includes live music. “We are even more motivated this year, and

appreciate those who have reached out to ask how can they help,” says Janzen. “I’ve been telling people that the very best way to ensure our market grows and Tsawwassen gets the best vendors is to show up and shop. Buy
them out. Word spreads quickly among vendors at the various farmers markets around the Lower Mainland, and a sell-out market will grow into the market you want to see, in a matter of weeks. Don’t wait until your neighbour tells you that corn is in. Show up every week, and vote with your wallet so we know what to bring in for you.” To become a vendor or volunteer, email farmfreshevents@gmail.com. The Tsawwassen Farmers Market runs Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from June 16 to Sept. 1. Benediction Lutheran Church is located at the corner of 56th Street and 6th Avenue.

Celebrate Garden Days at Earthwise Garden
The Earthwise Society is helping Deltans celebrate Garden Days, a Canadawide initiative to recognize the vital role of gardens and gardening in our communities. The celebration, which runs from June 16 to 24, will highlight Canada’s garden culture, history and innovations, and acknowledge the importance of public and private gardens, the value of home gardening and the promotion of environmental stewardship. Garden Days is an opportunity for Canadians to enjoy their own gardens, participate in their favourite garden activities, visit their local garden centres or enjoy their favourite local public gardens. The Earthwise Garden in Boundary Bay is in full bloom, so now is the perfect time for a tour and learn how Earthwise celebrates the value of gardens every day. In addition to providing a natural gathering place that brings the community together, the Earthwise Garden models sustainable gardening

Saints march on to another title
Sacred Heart tops 38 other schools to repeat as CIVA track & field champs MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The Sacred Heart track and field “machine” keeps on rolling. The 74-year-old Arthur Drive school has done it again — repeating as overall winners at the Catholic Independent Schools Vancouver Archdiocese (CIVSA) Championships, held at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby. The Saints beat out 38 other schools to take top honours thanks to a program that is rich in participation numbers and volunteers. A staggering 78 percent of all students in Grades 3-7 took part this season with the support of 10 coaches, mostly teachers at the school. “We have many staff who simply love coaching track and field, as well as staff who have done it and who want to pass on what they have learned,” explained PE teacher Jason Jones. “We also have former students who come back to help us as well at practices and

Sacred Heart Saints celebrate their second straight CVISA championship at Swangard Stadium. (Below) A victory in the high jump helped earn Talia Dunsmoor the 2006 girls aggregate award. meets.” The coaches are also making sure it’s a wellrounded program with students learning the various field and jumping disciplines, in addition to running. This is vital when it comes to overall titles. “Our team specializes in long jump, high jump, shot put and discus. This year we offered triple jump to a couple of our Grade 7 athletes. This event was only exclusive to the B.C. Elementary Track and Field Championship (in Richmond last month),” said John Kairis, another volunteer teacher coach. Besides overall honours, the Saints brought home team and individual aggregate awards. They took the 2005 (Grade 7) boys and girls team title, led by Gemma Dumas who captured the long jump event and was second in both the 100 and 400 metres. She was runner-up for the 2005 girls aggregate award. “The 2005 students are a great story of never giving up,” said Jones. “In Grade 3, they had one aggregate point at the CISVA meet. But with new additions, coupled with the students getting better, they
improved on their point total each year, and now look where they are!” All other age groups were near the top of the standings, adding to the Saints’ point total. Individually, Taila Dunsmoor captured the Girls 2006 award, winning the high jump, 400m and 800m events. She also ran a great 800m leg for the 2006 medley girls relay team that placed second. The Saints thrived in the 4x100 relay event with a first place finish for the 2008 boys. There were also valuable points gained from: a pair of thirds for the 2008 girls and 2007 mixed, a fourth for the 2008 boys, a fifth for the 2009 mixed, a sixth for the 2005 mixed and an eight for the 2006 boys. Cooper Maxwell produced a pair of third place finishes in the 2007 boys 800m and 1500m races. At the same age level, Trystan Read won the high jump and was just two centimetres off setting a new meet record. Kiersten Kuchma won the 2008 girls long jump for the second straight year. The meet culminated weeks of hard work that began in the school’s PE
classes. “Time is dedicated during gym classes as part of curriculum for students to practice their track and field skills,” added teacher Tamara Falcos. “As well, students practice before and after school several times a week with our amazing staff so they can really hone in on the techniques needed to excel in their particular race or field event.” The program made use of the loose gravel track at Delta Secondary but Falcos hopes a proper venue will be available soon for future
use. “Since teaching about physical, mental, and emotional health is so important in our curriculum, it would be great to see the provision of new and improved facilities being an actualization in our community,” she added. “Jason does a fantastic job working with our space at Sacred Heart, alongside our amazing support coaching staff and parents who volunteer their time to ensure the students who are passionate about track and field get the training and time to put into excelling in their skills.” 4432 Hawthorne Place

SDU grassroots program a hit on and off the field
Spring sessions attrack 275 players to Winskill South Delta United wrapped up another highly successful spring grassroots program with 275 players attending eight Wednesday night sessions on the grass at Winskill Park. The energetic young players not only further developed their technical ability in a fun environment under SDU staff, headed by Grassroots Head Coach Jon Rogers, but also dovetailed into the club’s cultural initiatives by running a concession. Led by the efforts of Lily and Charlie Rogers, along with Grace and Ella Vandereerden, the concession raised over $600 by the end of the spring season which will be donated to the B.C.
Children’s Hospital Foundation. They were inspired by the story of Tsawwassen’s own Taylin McGill — B.C. Children’s Hospital Champion Child for 2017 who is also school mate and family friend. Next up for the club is its annual Summer Skills Camp, led by SDU Head of Player Development Russ Heggie. It runs from July 9-13 on the turf at Dugald Morrison Park from 9-11 a.m. and is open to boys and girls born from 2005-to-2014. Registration for the 2018-19 fall and winter season is also underway. For more information on all the SDU programs and to register visit south deltaunitedsoccerclub.com
South Delta United’s eight week spring grassroots program not only improved the skills for 275 youngsters but also raised money for B.C. Children’s Hospital.
New look for youth soccer as three leagues come together
Youth soccer from Whistler to Chilliwack will have a different look in September with the newly formed B.C. Coastal Soccer League (BCCSL) taking flight. The circuit not only brings together the former B.C. Coastal boys and girls leagues, but the Metro Selects level as well, ending that rep tier’s 35-year run as its own separate entity.
The significant amalgamation is to provide efficiencies in terms of a common set of rules, discipline processes as well as a single scheduling system. The goal is to professionalize the league for teams of all levels and provide consistent services to its constituents. The new BCCSL features eight participating districts — Richmond, Alouette, Burnaby, Fraser Valley, North (North
Shore/Squamish/Whistler/Sunshine Coast), South Fraser, Tri-Cities and Vancouver, representing 42 clubs and an estimated 21,000 players. Clubs will still run Metro/Select teams but they will now be part of the BCSSL First Division with a trickle down effect for the lower tiered rep teams. A deadline has been set for July 2 for clubs to enter former Metro teams into
the BCCSL. For much of its existence, the Metro/ Selects League was the top tier option for players until the B.C. Premier Soccer League (HPL) was launched for the 201112 season. Still, Metro/Selects continued to attract top talent with some players preferring a closer option to home. The BCCSL launches its season the Sept. 8-9 weekend for all teams.

CARTER, Patricia Rose (nee Winfield) March 23, 1961 - June 5, 2018
GORDON, Olive Margaret (Ollie) (Nee BROCK)
Obituaries are funny things. One is born here, dies there and the course of one’s life seemingly unfolds in a smooth, preordained manner. Life, of course, is messy and while the majority of the time decisions are yours to make sometimes you have to do your best with the genes that you are born with.
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, sister, mother-in-law, aunt and friend. Olive was affectionately known to family and friends as Ollie. She recently passed away in Burnaby.
Patricia’s happiest memories were of growing up on Oliphant Street in Fairfield, Victoria in a grand old house. She enjoyed elementary school at Sir James Douglas, spent hours exploring Beacon Hill Park with her brother and lovingly nurtured her chickens and rabbits. Her mother tended to the five children while her father worked multiple jobs and dreamed up schemes (unsuccessful, she always noted dryly) to make his fortune. As she grew out of her teenage years medical issues began to arise and forced her to adapt. She was never bitter at the hand that fate dealt her, never used her chronic pain as an excuse but got on with life and her career. For those who showed her kindness and understanding she would move the world; for those few who judged her by what they saw rather than who she was she had only disdain. When the decision was made in consultation with the outstanding staff of Surrey Memorial Hospital to let her go gently into the night my greatest regret was that she did not regain consciousness so I could tell her “do not rage against the dying of the light, you have ever been my hero and will live on in the memories of those who knew your gentle nature best.” Online Condolences may be offered at www.deltafuneral.ca Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040

Ollie was born in 1929 to Margaret and Hugh Brock. She completed her schooling in Cranbrook and moved to Victoria to pursue a career in education. As a teacher she taught in Waldo, Elko, Cranbrook, Trail and at the Sacred Heart School in Ladner. Olive married Mac Gordon and together they had five children. Mac predeceased her while the family was living in Tsawwassen. Many happy times were enjoyed by Ollie, her family and friends at Mac’s Shack on Rosen Lake, where the welcome mat was always out. Ollie loved to play cards and was a long-time member of a bridge club. She loved children. Her children, grandchildren, and students brought much joy and happiness to her life. Surviving Ollie are her children Jim (Ally), BJ, Kay (Harold), Pat (Julius), and Sean (Mika); her grandchildren Jeremy, Hugh, Clare, Sarah, and Grace; her loving sister Grace Gill of Cranbrook, nieces Beaven and Susan and nephews Bob, John and Glen.
