Police seeking key witness to fatal collision

Dry spring leads to berry good harvest!

Person was in blue Jeep Liberty IAN JACQUES

Aleyna Kayalak of Ladner picked a wheelbarrow full of strawberries at Emma Lea Farms on Westham Island. It’s been a bumper crop for berry growers this year thanks to a record dry spell in May. See story on Page 7.

RCMP investigators are hoping a key witness will come forward to help in their investigation of a fatal accident in Ladner that claimed the life of 19-yearold Olivia Malcom earlier this month. Investigators have received information that an unidentified witness might have assisted at the scene. “The witness was driving a blue Jeep Liberty and had been coming from the direction of the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal,” said Const. Mike Halskov with E-Division Traffic Services. “Investigators are not ruling out the possibility that the witness is from Vancouver Island.” If this individual recognizes themselves as the witness being sought, they are asked contact Const. Niels Hermes at 778-2902411 or email: niels.hermes@ rcmp-grc.gc.ca. On Saturday, June 2 at approximately 10:15 p.m., police, firefighters and paramedics attended the collision on Highway 17A just north of the Ladner Trunk Road intersection. A northbound vehicle, in which Malcom was a passenger, was stopped at the side of the highway. The male driver, Malcom’s boyfriend, pulled over

at the bus stop and stayed in the vehicle while Malcom and a female friend got out to check for something in the trunk. Both women were behind the vehicle when a northbound Jeep struck them from behind. Malcom, who was a promising New Westminster lacrosse player, was pronounced dead at the scene, while her friend, 20, was taken to hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. The Jeep driver remained at the scene and cooperated. Alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor, according to police. Sgt. Lorne Lecker of the RCMP Deas Island Traffic Services said although they are proceeding with the crash as an impaired driving causing death investigation, such cases are complex.

Cessford’s slate unveiled Former police chief introduces Independents Working for You at launch party SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

They’re going to do things differently. That was the theme delivered by the Independents Working for You slate led by mayoral candidate Jim Cessford at a campaign launch in Ladner Tuesday evening. Over 200 people were at Harris Barn to hear the candidates in the Oct. 20 civic election talk about themselves and how things need to change in Delta. Cessford, the city’s former long-time police chief who retired three years ago, will be running with incumbent councillors Bruce McDonald and Jeannie Kanakos as well as council hopefuls Sandeep Pandher and Garry Shearer. Also part of the ticket are incumbent school trustees Laura Dixon and Nick Kanakos along with newcomer Joe Muego. Described by his fellow candidates as positive and always engaged, Cessford promised more dialogue and community-based leadership in which “no voice is too small” will be the motto, following the “no call too small” mantra that began during his days on the police force. “I’m running for mayor

Mayoral candidate Jim Cessford (centre) addresses the crowd at a campaign launch for Independents Working for You Tuesday evening at the Harris Barn. He’s joined on the slate by (from left) Bruce McDonald, Garry Shearer, Jeannie Kanakos, Sandeep Pandher, Laura Dixon, Joe Muego and Nick Kanakos. because I’ll offer my collaborative approach and fresh and new ideas. I can make a difference and I will make a difference to this community. My style of leadership is to be open, transparent and accessible as a participative–style of leadership and I will listen,” said Cessford. He said he didn’t want to surround himself with “yes people” who would only tell him what he wants to hear.

His fellow candidates talked about a current lack of dialogue and a need to change the tone of engagement, as well as the city needing to change the way it does business. “Our motto is listen first,” said Jeannie Kanakos. Shearer noted Delta needs to work better with its various community groups and “not let policies and bureaucracy get in the way.”

Saying the city has done some good things but can do much better, McDonald noted Delta has over the last few years become a “top-down” and “we know better” city, while employees find themselves looking over their shoulders. The mayor’s seat and three council seats will be vacated this year, which guarantees big changes at the council table. Also running for mayor is former city CAO George

Harvie. His Achieving for Delta slate includes Dan Copeland, Param Grewal, Alicia Guichon, Dylan Kruger and Cal Traversy. Two-term councillor Sylvia Bishop is also running for mayor under the Team Delta banner with councillor Robert Campbell and newcomers Joan Hansen, Kim Kendall and Simran Walia. The only other declared candidate for council is independent Darcy Green.

Summer of stink feared for East Ladner residents SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It’ll be a summer of stink in East Ladner. That was the gist of Delta council’s discussion, and what some residents had to say, on the latest staff report on the contentious Green For Life Enviro-Smart Organics facility, a 72nd Street composting operation that has, quite literally, raised an ongoing stink in the community. Any potential changes to comply with a regional air quality permit won’t be happening for a while as Metro Vancouver is still in discussions with the company over a permit. Council was told Metro Vancouver has a pair of draft permits for EnviroSmart, but Delta has

not been allowed to be involved in the conversation between the company and district. What Delta has been able to learn is that EnviroSmart will have the option of a permit that authorizes emissions from a fully enclosed facility or a permit that temporarily authorizes emissions from the existing facility but would not allow it to continue in its current form after a certain date. Council was told the issuance of a permit is the critical next step which will provide a road map toward improvements at the facility and put Metro Vancouver in a better position for enforcement action. Council had already stated it would support an application to increase

capacity but only under a number of conditions, including the facility being fully enclosed.

What we’ve seen is a facility that can manage odours properly and hopefully we’ll have something similar here. STEVEN LAN

Engineering director Steven Lan, who toured fully enclosed composting facilities recently in Ontario, including one owned by Green For Life, said Metro’s permit process should be completed

within the next couple of months. Lan said the enclosed facilities he visited, behind concrete and treated with bio-filters, are vastly better than the open air compost operation in Delta. “What we’ve seen is a facility that can manage odours properly and hopefully we’ll have something similar here,” he said. Ladner residents who attend Monday’s council meeting left clearly frustrated at the slow pace, one saying it’s going to be “a summer of stink” and another saying it’s “just more of the same.” Coun. Jeannie Kanakos asked staff if Delta has the

ability to pull the business licence if residents’ health is impacted. Kanakos wondered if the physical, psychological and social impacts of the operation should be a consideration by the region on the company’s plans to increase capacity. She didn’t get a direct answer on that one, but was told the issue of health impacts of odorous emissions was referred to Fraser Health, which has been invited to speak to Delta officials. During council’s discussion later on Metro’s discussion paper on regulating odorous air contaminants, Lan noted that Delta’s experience with Enviro-Smart has shown a much better process to deal with such applications is needed.

Pet Week of the

Say hello to Fiona

Fiona is a “seven” year old chi mix who weighs ten pounds. This sweet girl is medium energy and is very shy at first. It takes some time for her to warm up and become comfortable so she will need a patient home that will help her boost her confidence. Fiona loves females and is fairly quick at opening up to them but has some trust issues with males. It can take a while for her to open up to them, but once she does, she gets up on the couch and sits with them and loves their attention. She has been socialized with both big and little dogs and we have had no problems, and cats seem acceptable too! A home with another dog is best suited for Fiona as it will help her gain confidence. Fiona’s fosters have been working with her and children, and did have Fiona around their four year old nephew. They noticed that she barks every time because of her shy nature, so a home with older children who are better able to understand her is more suitable for her. Fiona has been able to spend her nights on the couch (where she prefers!) and not have a single accident. She is great on leash and also food motivated which helps with training. She does know her basic commands but they need some fine tuning. As with all of our dogs she is spayed and up to date on her shots. If you think you may be the perfect forever home that this little princess is looking for, please email us at pbandchi@gmail.com or fill out an application at www.pbandchi.com

Beach Grove pro to golf all day in support of the ALS Society Shaun Lundy to take part in annual golf-a-thon for first time IAN JACQUES

The Beach Grove Golf Club is once again taking on the challenge in the fight against ALS. Club pro Shaun Lundy will golf as many holes as possible on Monday, June 25 to raise awareness and funds for the ALS Society of BC. Beach Grove is one of more than 30 golf courses across B.C. participating in the 13th annual PGA of BC Golfathon for ALS. Beach Grove is no stranger to raising funds for the cause. Golf pro Cory Rudston-Brown participated for eight years, completing a whopping 325 holes in 2016. Last year, a number of the club’s members stepped up after Rudston-Brown wanted to take the year off. This year, Lundy said he wanted to step up to the challenge. “ALS has affected a lot of people here at Beach Grove and the community of Tsawwassen obviously. It’s also affected some members of my family too,” said Lundy. “Cory has done an incredible job of building this over the years and Beach Grove wants to keep the tradition going and raise money to help get rid of this disease.”

Those wanting to donate to the cause can drop by the golf shop or on the ALS website (www.golfathonforals.com) where there is a link to Beach Grove Golf Club. “Hopefully we get some good weather and the day goes well,” said Lundy. Berry crops benefit from the driest May on record IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

The driest May on record has resulted in a bountiful berry harvest in Delta. Kevin Husband from Emma Lea Farms on Westham Island said the season started 10 days earlier this year thanks to an extremely dry May. “We’ve done very well this year. With all the warm weather, we started in mid-April when the rain stopped and that allowed the berries to develop a really good root system,” Husband said. With the lack of rainfall, Husband said the roots have developed because of the necessity to go down further to source water. “The sunshine has been good and really sweetened them up and brought the berries along probably 10 days earlier,” he said. “We are now in the middle of the season. At this point we should have strawberries for another 10 days or so. They are really sweet this year because of all the sunshine we have had.

Julia and Kimberley came from Burnaby to pick strawberries at Emma Lea Farms last weekend. “For yield and quality, this is going to be one of the better years.” Emma Lea Farms will also have picked raspberries in about 10 days and will also have a small amount of u-pick raspberries as well. Husband said blueberries should be ready around July 7. At Westham Island Herb Farm, Sharon Ellis said the season has been good so far. “We could have used a touch more rain in May for some of our crops, but if I had to pick, I would take this weather,” Ellis said.

NORTH DELTA FAMILY DAY

“We were pretty lucky to get all our planting in during May. The strawberries are good, so I’m not complaining. “The best thing about sunshine is it brings the people out. Even with the best crop, if it’s raining, people just don’t come out,” she said. Doug Gillham, a meteorologist at The Weather Network, said May was the driest on record at Vancouver International Airport. Just 1.6 mm of rain was recorded during the month, compared to the normal of 65 mm.

t’s as much about the people as it is about the issues. They didn’t say that in as many words, but it wasn’t hard to decipher the strategy as the third slate in this fall’s civic election was formally unveiled during an event at the Harris Barn in Ladner earlier this week. Led by mayoral candidate and former Delta police chief Jim Cessford, Independents Working for You is fielding eight candidates for the October election, including a pair of incumbents for both Delta council and the Delta board of education. But rather than talk about all the good they’ve done for Delta – there was a bit of that – or what they’ve got planned for the future – there was a bit of that too – there was a conscious decision to put the focus on the quality of the individuals that are letting their names stand for elected office. All eight hopefuls got their turn at the mic, which was unlike the launch parties of the other two slates that left the talking to the mayoral candidates, and they all punctuated their speeches with words like “integrity” and “respect” and “leadership.” It’s a sound strategy given their leader is light on political experience but has a boat-load of credibility in these parts after two decades as a wellrespected police chief. There were subtle, and sometimes more overt, references to the errant ways of the present administration, with repeated calls for more public engagement and the need to change the tone of that dialogue. There was talk about core values and about listening to the public, with Cessford at one point suggesting that no voice is too small, a take-off of his former department’s “no call too small” policy. The smattering of references to issues like affordable housing and inadequate sports facilities at the launch will, I’m sure, give way to a detailed platform in the weeks ahead, but even when that time comes I suspect the focus will remain on the candidates. With a political rookie at the helm but as many incumbents as newcomers, it’s hard to pigeon-hole the slate given it has both experience and new ideas. I suspect the messaging moving forward will not be as much about the past or even the future as it will be about the character of the individuals involved.

Immigrant issue offers master class in losing moral argument

I

n the midst of the everevolving political discussion on pipelines, trade wars and the BC Liberals/ Jim Shepard undermining the conversation on electoral reform, it is good to appreciate the relative oasis of local politics here in Delta. On Tuesday, Jim Cessford invited me to attend the Independents Working for You slate’s campaign launch. In addition to seeing many familiar faces among Delta’s politically minded citizens, the event was a pleasant reminder of the potential for sincerity that can exist in municipal politics. It is a rare quality that seems to be all but unknown on the world stage. Nothing could be in starker contrast to recent events south of the border. It is generally wiser not to comment on the POTUS in a public setting (lest ye incur the wrath of both sides of the political spectrum), but separating children from their parents is a master class in losing the moral argument. It does not matter if you support U.S. President Donald Trump’s “zero-tolerance” policy on immigration and undocumented migrants, the act of dividing families is morally repugnant and deeply traumatizing. To be fair, this is a result of families illegally crossing the U.S.Mexico border being prosecuted

Community Comment NICHOLAS WONG

in the flawed U.S. criminal justice system. However, the why of the matter is not the issue. The fact of the matter makes all other considerations moot. It no longer matters whether or not he averted a potential nuclear war with North Korea. No one is contemplating growth in GDP, African-American prosperity or low unemployment numbers. Crazily enough, no one even cares that members of the Obama administration tried to blame Trump for photos of children being detained in cages under the Obama presidency in 2014. All that matters is that this unequivocally evil practice is occurring and a very large number of people defended it. If that does not deepen your cynicism towards global politics, few things will. Unfortunately, the remedy also leaves a terrible taste in the

mouth. After defending his position by saying that he had no control over the family-separation policy, Trump did a 180 yesterday by signing an executive order to keep families together while in detention. By doing so, he admits he always had the power to correct the situation and did nothing until political pressure hit a boiling point. The worst thing is this is the best case scenario. As congress goes to vote on broader immigration bills to potentially fund his infamous wall, the lingering question remains: did the POTUS resort to concentration camp tactics to apply political leverage? Aldous Huxley wrote that “the propagandist’s purpose is to make one set of people forget that certain other sets of people are human.” The demagogues on all sides did their job well on this issue. So, while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemns the child separation policy one day after saying it was not his place, I am grateful for municipal politics and the myriad of problems we can address as a community. Community advocate Nicholas Wong ran as an independent candidate in Delta South in last year’s provincial election. He finished second with more than 6,400 votes. FoodontheCornervolunteers never miss a Saturday mission

Editor: Serving the needy people on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside for 35 years, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have helped us along the way. Every Saturday just before 10 a.m., the white truck of the Food on the Corner Society leaves the parking lot behind the Thrifty Foods and Joe’s Farm Market loaded with goods provided by the residents of Ladner and Tsawwassen for its weekly mission, serving folks in this most impoverished area. In all these many years, this ministry has never failed even one Saturday. I am so thankful for the

many helpers who, week by week, make this important mission possible. The soup and sandwich makers, the folks that drive and serve, they all do so on a totally voluntary basis. Some of our volunteers have been involved for all those 35 years. The activity at our society starts early in the week by some of our volunteers who collect the food items and then store them in our small warehouse. The truck is loaded early Friday morning by a band of faithful men and then on Saturday morning soup, sandwiches and three urns of coffee are added, dropped off by volunteers, many of them local families.

Who are some of our volunteers? You might be surprised to find out we have, at times, school classes who make sandwiches, older folks in seniors homes also contribute making delicious sandwiches, some of the ladies contribute by knitting items for the cold winter months. Multigenerational families are involved with even the young children chopping vegetables for the soup and grandfathers making sandwiches. We have often been told our soup and service are absolutely the best in the area. We are a non-profit organization established in 1990. If you would like to

get involved, check us out at WWW.foodonthecorner. ca. Again, my thanks to all our volunteers. Hermann Glockl Founder Food on the Corner Society

‘Blind’ drivers have no place on roads

Editor: As my bride and I drive around South Delta we observe many motorists who, by their inability to read signs, reveal they are in desperate need of eye examinations - in other words, they are blind or give every appearance of being blind. And, as most people know, blind people ought not to be driving a motor vehicle. Blind motorists are as much a danger to all as are texting motorists two of a kind that ought to be ruled off the highways and byways everywhere. In our South Delta drives, we noticed, particularly, the number of speeders who race through a school zone during school hours with-

out apparent regard for the sign, the children nor their parents/guardians. Were I king for a day or week, I would impound the offending driver’s vehicles for no less than one year - storage costs to be charged to the offender - and cancel said individual’s driver’s licence for two years with no possible opportunity to have it returned within that period. Some might scream that such is far too harsh but my response is, no it is not. Such minor “corrections” are a very small price to pay to save the life of a child or parent/guardian. Surely, sensible motorists can see the right in that and those who do not or will not, then strike them

from the roll of drivers, forever. I am pleased the Delta’s police chief saw the wisdom in my approach to him as we both were enjoying the ambiance of Stir Coffee House in Ladner and we discussed the lack of sight on the part of motorists who speed through school zones. In at least one school zone, the chief’s response was swift and a day later I received a telephone call from a member of the Delta police to advise that the appropriate people were on the scene and just that first day had nabbed two blind drivers. My hurrah was heard over much of Ladner. Bob Orrick

Something must be done about stench

Editor: I am a long-time resident of Ladner and am appalled that no action has been taken to rectify the extreme stench we are faced with on an ongoing basis. I would like to know what the mayor and council are planning to do so that we can breathe clean air again. Yesterday’s stench was especially nauseating and it started early in the morning. I feel strongly there is no room for a business which does not display concern and respect towards the community it is operating in. Obviously, the safety

concerns of GFL do not include our vibrant community and I am very surprised the city does not act on behalf of tax-paying citizens. I have lived in Ladner long enough to see what is being done to this gem of a community and I must also express my disappointment in the political leadership, or lack thereof, on the municipal, provincial and federal levels. In a province like beautiful B.C., we must have the right to clean air and water. The stench emanating from the composting operation on 72nd Street

represents a health hazard to me and my family and I really wish that our politicians would take our concerns seriously. I am very worried and feel helpless. I will leave my contact information with the Optimist so any politician interested can reach out to me for a meeting. It would be of great interest to me to learn which government agency oversees and checks the contents of the waste dumped. This practice of polluting our air has to stop immediately. Choose Local for the Taste of Summer

Summer’s here, and eating local is easy. June, July and August bring us a succession of treats: plump and juicy berries, crisp sweet corn, tasty tomatoes, and more. Summer memories are made of these, meals shared with friends and family featuring the best of our local harvests. With so much local bounty, now is the time of year to actively seek out freshly harvested, local produce. Grocery stores can help with this by providing signs to indicate local produce. Some restaurants and stores go further by naming the farm where the food was grown. This helps consumers make informed choices and recognizes the importance of the work the farmers do. The taste of a crisp, freshly harvested fruit or vegetable makes buying local a

delicious choice, but it’s also a wise choice for our families, our communities, and the environment. Farm fresh produce is often sold the same day it is harvested, and fresher food not only means more delicious, it also means more nutritious. Local produce is allowed to ripen naturally and is picked at the peak of ripeness, making its way to our plates when its nutrient value is the highest. Food that must travel long distances loses some of those essential nutrients as it makes the long journey to reach store shelves. Buying local supports local farmers and the local economy. Meeting your farmer face to face at a farmer’s market or on the farm builds a sense of community and helps you and your family develop a deeper connection with your food by understanding where it comes from. Purchasing local fruits and vegetables at a farm stand or farmer’s market supports small scale family farms that are still part of our community. By getting to know your local farmer you gain a better understanding about how the food has been grown, and can ask questions about sustainability issues that might be important to you. Besides being tastier and more nutrient-rich, locally sourced food can have far reaching environmental impacts. Much of the food we eat travels thousands of miles from farm to table. Reducing this distance helps address

climate change by reducing CO2 emissions. Buying local produce helps us build a stronger and more sustainable food system and increases local food security. A diverse and thriving local food system means our community is more resilient and better able to adapt to climate change. Eating local food is one of those small choices we can all make to have a big impact on many levels.

If you would like to learn more about what it means to buy local, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs are a good way to make new taste discoveries while eating with the season. CSA programs have become popular over the last ten years as a way to support and encourage small, local farms. With CSA, members subscribe to a season’s harvest, and every week receive a box of the best. One of the exciting aspects of exploring local farms is finding new and unusual vegetables. CSA famers often grow specialty fruits and vegetables and unique heirloom varieties that may surprise you. These interesting varieties are often features of the weekly CSA harvest. Heirloom varieties are plants whose seeds are carried down through the generations to preserve their lineages and unique characteristics. Have you ever tried a purple potato or yellow carrot? How about a striped bean or a green cauliflower? Visit a local

farmers market in August and you’ll begin to get an idea of what’s out there.

Another way to explore the diversity of the local harvest and discover heirloom vegetables is through seasonal food events. Earthwise Society’s annual Tomato Fest, held on August 25, is a celebration of the local harvest and showcases a wide range of heirloom tomato varieties and other produce. The public is invited to come down and taste tomatoes the way your grandparents might remember themripe, juicy and bursting with flavour. Discover the incredible variety in shape, size and colour, and subtle differences in flavour. With names like Green Zebra, Black Beauty, and Mortgage Lifter, you can imagine a story behind every fruit. Whatever your choice, Tomato Fest is a great reason to come out and taste the beautiful local harvest that surrounds us. Earthwise Society runs the Earthwise Garden and Farm, a small scale certified organic teaching farm that sells a wide range of heirloom and specialty produce at their farm store and through a CSA. The Garden welcomes visitors and is open daily, located at 6400 3rd Avenue in Boundary Bay, near Centennial Beach. Patricia Fleming

Buying Locally Grown Foods Pays Good Dividends The popularity of locally grown foods continues to grow, and that growth has contributed to an awareness of where the food people eat comes from. Locally grown foods are those that are grown within your community or a community nearby. Such foods do not need to be shipped hundreds of miles, and that contributes to meals that are fresher. But freshness is not the only benefit to purchasing locally grown foods, which pay various dividends for people and the planet. Locally grown foods benefit the environment. The phrase “field to plate” is significant to consumers who prefer locally grown foods. That phrase refers to the distance food travels from the grower to the plate on your dinner table. Estimates vary depending on the source, but advocates of locally grown food suggest that it reduces the field to plate distance by an average of 1,300 miles. Locally grown foods also stimulate the local economy.

Supporting farmers who grow their foods locally means they are putting money back into their own community, a worthwhile effort at a time when so many small communities are struggling economically. Buying locally grown foods contributes to biodiversity. Small, local farms typically grow a wider variety of fruits and vegetables in an effort to extend their growing seasons. That means consumers of locally grown foods have access to more fruits and vegetables, and therefore more flavor. Buying locally helps to maintain the green space your community and surrounding communities have left. Locally grown foods can be more nutritious. Fruits and vegetables can rapidly lose nutrients once they are harvested. Buying from local farmers increases the likelihood that the fruits and vegetables you purchase were just picked and therefore have yet to lose a significant amount of nutrients. Locally grown foods are growing in popularity, and that popularity can be traced to the freshness and nutrition of such foods as well as far less shipping costs, and that locally grown foods enhance our environment.

Gymnaestrada proves popular Discipline brings a diverse group of athletes together at Delta Gymnastics

Gymnaestrada might not be a familiar discipline to many locally, but the sport is known worldwide and has a tremendous following at Delta Gymnastics. “Gymnaestrada is a unique form of gymnastics that weaves music to a choreographed performance that combines dance, acrobatics and gymnastics,” says Jennifer Watts-Turner, Delta Gymnastics team manager. “This discipline focuses

on mass participation and the goal is to promote and encourage joy in movement.” Teams can be as small as 10 gymnasts or as many as 100 and performances can range from three minutes for smaller teams to 15 minutes for larger ones. Delta Gymnastics will be taking part in the 2018 Canadian Gymnaestrada in Richmond from June 27 to July 1, which will include performances at the Richmond Olympic

Oval as well as at the Canada Day celebrations in Steveston. “Our Gymnaestrada team is formed by close to 40 people from two different groups that will seamlessly combine into one inclusive choreography,” says Watts-Turner. “One of our groups has men and women from ages 11 to 34, which include coaches, competitive athletes, recreational and high school participants, as well as spouses. Our other group

is formed by a group of ladies we call the Legends and they range in age from 40-plus to 70-plus.” If selected, the Delta Gymnastics team would head to Austria for the World Gymnaestrada in 2019, an event that happens every four years and attracts more than 20,000 participants worldwide. “We love offering Gymnaestrada at our gym as it gives participants a chance to bond and experience the camaraderie

and pleasure of performing as one team,” says Watts-Turner. “It is a celebration of movement that encourages creativity for male and female gymnasts of all ages.” Team members come from many backgrounds, including dance, cheer and competitive gymnastics. “Each person brings something special to the team which allows for a very rich and multi-facetted performance.”

Janet Gigliotti is happy to be returning to Theatre Under the Stars. It’s a “wonderful experience” to perform in Stanley Park in the summertime, she says. “It’s a tradition for people to go there and it’s really lovely to be a part of that,” says Gigliotti, who grew up in Ladner. She adds with a laugh that actors get to compete with raccoons, fireworks and beautiful sunsets. A former school teacher,

Gigliotti plays Dorothy Brock in 42nd Street, a “Golden Age Broadway sensation jam-packed with glitz and glam.” That play, along with Cinderella, run on alternating nights from July 4 to Aug. 18 at the Malkin Bowl in Vancouver’s Stanley Park. Gigliotti says her character could be described as a bit of a diva who’s coming back to theatre at the height of the Great Depression with something to prove. “It’s her moment to come back as a star again, make her mark again, and

prove herself,” she says. The play is an adaptation of a cult classic 1933 film. Gigliotti says the whole artistic team and ensemble of performers is “just a really stellar group.” Her previous credits at Theatre Under the Stars include South Pacific and Bye Bye Birdie. Learning to Breathe is Janice Lynn Mather’s debut novel.

Novel long time in making DAVE WILLIS

Janice Lynn Mather’s debut novel has been in the making for more than a decade.

She wrote the first draft of Learning to Breathe in one of her first writing classes at the University of British Columbia back in 2003 or 2004. Since then she’s gone back to it many times. “I feel like I had a commitment to get this one wrapped up and out into the world,” says the Tsawwassen resident. The novel, geared towards young adults, is set in the Bahamas. The story sees Indira, 16, who’s from a smaller island with more rural, country atmosphere, sent to Nassau to get away from some family circumstanc-

es and to go to school. While staying with relatives in Nassau, she’s the victim of a sexual assault. The story is about Indira dealing a bad situation that’s in no way her fault, explains Mather. “It’s really about her finding her own way and taking back ownership of her life and making an identity and some peace for herself.” Mather has worked as a journalist and a performance poet. She says she’s pretty much always known she’s wanted to be a writer. “I’ve always loved writing. It’s something I’ve always enjoyed doing.”

The body will fight to stay at a certain weight, what it considers its set-point. The Biggest Loser. For six years a group of contestants was studied before the weight loss show, immediately afterwards and then six years later. The results weren’t good, despite the participants’ best efforts. Only one of the 14 participants studied weighed less, four of them are now heavier than before they went on the show and the other nine weigh the same as they did before the show. What was the take-away from the study? The scientists concluded the calorie restrictions the participants had undergone had reduced, and depressed, their metabolic rate. In one participant’s case, it was 800 calories below baseline. Food-wise this meant that person had to eat 800 calories less each day (and this is on top of the already reduced calories they had to eat as a part of their weight maintenance program) than people of

the exact same weight who have never dieted before. This has been proven time and time again. People who lose weight have a three to five per cent lower resting metabolic rate than their counterparts in control studies. Why? Their bodies are fighting to get back to their set-point weight. Now, a lower metabolism after weight loss is not new news. We know that losing weight slows our metabolisms, but what we didn’t know was how hard the body would fight to get back to its set-point. Great, you might be thinking, why the heck should I even try to lose weight now? Well, all is not lost because there are many tried and true methods to lose weight that work — and work for the long haul. First, people who have lost 10 per cent or more of the body weight, and maintained it, ate a portion-controlled diet with less than 30 per cent of their calories from fat.

Second, they got in more than 200 minutes of moderate-intense exercise per week. Third, their diets were consistent. Yes, they splurged a bit on the weekends and for holidays, but in general they ate the same foods regularly. Fourth, they ate a high protein breakfast. Fifth, they monitored themselves with weekly weigh-ins as well tracking their daily food intake. But who can we influence the greatest so they don’t affect their metabolisms at all? Our children. If we can keep kids at a healthy weight, they will not have to worry about slowing metabolisms, calories and losing fat when they are older. Let’s all get on board and keep our young healthy and fit. Nobody likes to go on a diet. Even the word “diet” raises feelings of misery and hardship. Who likes to limit their calories, eat food they really don’t want and feel hungry all of the time? Yeah, like I said, nobody, but now science has discovered that some of this is because we are actually hardwired to resist dietary restrictions. Recent studies released have found that our bodies have an actual weight that it likes to be at, a weight that it will fight hard to be and stay at it — even if we lose weight. Those pesky scientists running the studies say this mechanism is very similar to the human body striving for that stable temperature it loves, 98.6 degrees. But, in this case, it’s the body fighting to stay at a certain weight, what it considers its “setpoint.” This set-point phenomenon has been demonstrated in a number of studies, but reported the most a number years ago when a long-term study was released using the participants from the popular weight loss show

done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.” What do you need to ask? Ask for help, wisdom, a promotion? Ask for directions? The Bible teaches us we should ask often. James 4:3: “We have not, because we ask not, and when we do ask we have the wrong motive.” So, keep your motive pure and make sure you ask often. Asking could be the answer for the miracle you have been searching for, and if the answer you get isn’t the one you expected, then you will also benefit from the ask. It will solve whatever it was that wasn’t clear and stop you from wasting time going in the wrong direction.

Have you ever spent more time driving around looking for a place than you should? You would have arrived sooner if you would’ve only swallowed your pride and pulled over to ask for direction. We often spend more time lost than we need to and more time struggling than makes sense. Because of the culture we live in, and technological mediums available to us, the last thing we want to do is engage another person and reveal our shortcomings. We have lost the art of asking. We feel to ask is somehow embarrassing. Our pride tells us no one will want to help. However, asking is an essential part to growing. When I was in school we

Tsawwassen teen a two-time national champion thanks to his hard work MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Jacob Lin’s fast-rising squash career means a different high school path come September. The Grade 7 Pebble Hill student is headed to Magee Secondary to be part of the Vancouver school’s SPARTS program — designed for high performance athletes and performing arts students that require a flexible schedule. It goes with the territory of being a two-time national champion. Lin accomplished the feat at the recent Canadian Junior Championships in Toronto where the tournament’s top seed completed a dominant three-year run at the U13 level. Two years ago, he produced a surprise bronze medal. That was followed by his first national title in 2017. Pushing him along the way is good friend and training partner Joseph Toth. The pair are part of a stable of top young players from the West Coast Squash High Performance Academy. The Richmond-based club dominated Junior Nationals — winning four age group titles while Lin and Toth squared off in an all-B.C. final. “Every day these two are training together. They were in the final against each at provincials and lot of other junior tournaments in B.C. too,” said Lin’s coach Marco Toriz a former top ranked player and Mexican national team coach. “They train so hard together and the goal is to keep facing each other (in the National finals) over the next seven years.” Lin’s success goes beyond his own country. Back in 2016, he become the first-ever Canadian to win an individual title at the prestigious Hong Kong Junior Squash Open — capturing the the 120-player U11 Division in the sanctioned platinum world series tournament. Lin was third at last year’s event at the U13 level and is returning to compete in the same age category again this summer. Another impressive feat was a fifth place showing at last year’s U.S. Junior Squash Open. He took up the sport when he was nine and his first club tournament win followed at the Junior Evergreen Open. By 2015, he captured

As one of the country’s top up-and-coming squash players, Tsawwassen’s Jacob Lin is headed to Magee Secondary for his Grade 8 year for the school’s SPARTS program designed for high performance athletes. silver in the U11 Division at the B.C. Junior Squash Open Championships and hasn’t looked back since. The long term goal is taking his game to a high-profile American university — following a similar journey of some of his club mates, including U19 national champion Andrea Toth who is headed to Princeton this fall. However, Lin’s parents are also making sure his interests

go beyond the squash court. His hard work in the classroom resulted in being accepted into Magee’s Math 8 Honours Program. He also plays the piano and enjoys sketching. “We owe a great thanks to Jacob’s coaches, training partners and school teachers,” said his mom Alice. “They have been giving Jacob full support.”

South Delta United earns B.C. Soccer top club status

South Delta United Soccer Club has achieved standard 1 of the B.C .Soccer Club Charter Program. The program is based on meeting Administrative, Technical, and Governance criteria. The criteria and the program were created to help assure players, parents, coaches, and administrators that their club is operating and meeting a set of on and off-field standards. “South Delta United is proud to be recognized for meeting Club Charter Standard,” Rich Zahn, President, South Delta United.

These predictions are supplements to and not replacements for the Canadian Tide and Current Tables, which include the only authorized tidal predictions for Canada and are provided by Canadian Hydrographic Service.

“We believe it shows our commitment to achieving excellence across all areas of our club - administrative, governance, and technical programming. Thank you to all the volunteers who worked hard to get us to this point, and to BC Soccer for their assistance.” South Delta United Soccer Club was formed in the 2016-2017 season as an amalgamation of the Ladner Boys, Ladner Girls, and Tsawwassen Soccer Clubs. The club offers boys and girls U5-U18 programming as well as spring and summer sessions. “I want to congratulate South Delta United Soccer Club for achieving Standard 1 of

the BC Soccer Club Charter Program,” said Kjeld Brodsgaard, B.C. Soccer President. “Achieving Standard 1 shows the dedication that the club’s staff and volunteers have to create the best possible learning environment for all players and coaches. We look forward to continuing to work with South Delta United as they continue provide a wonderful soccer experience for youth players.” Canada Soccer has commended B.C. Soccer for the work that has been completed over the last two years on the development and implementation of BC Soccer’s Club Charter Program. 5270 Laburnum Park Place

B1IslandersridewinstreakintoFridaytiltwithAdanacs The suddenly surging Delta Islanders will be looking for their fourth straight win when the Coquitlam Adanacs visit the Ladner Leisure Centre Friday night (8 p.m.) in a key late season battle in the B.C. Junior “B” Tier One Lacrosse League. The Islanders produced their third straight win Tuesday at the Langley Events Centre — toppling the host Thunder 8-4 to move back to .500 on the season (7-7) and leapfrog Langley into sixth place. Delta is also just one point out of fourth spot and will be looking to sweep the season series against the second place Adanacs (11-30). The top eight advance to the playoffs in what is the inaugural season for the league after B.C. Lacrosse opted to drop the Intermediate age level (17-and18-year-olds) and make junior a five-year division.

A big second period made the difference on Tuesday as Delta outscored the Thunder 4-1 to take control behind the stellar goaltending of Brayden Maskell who finished with 43 saves. Earlier, Delta snapped a fourgame losing streak with a pair of victories over the weekend. Joey Debaughn and Jackson Tutkaluke each had four goals in the win over Burnaby, while Isaac Richmond added a hat trick and six points in last Friday’s 15-2 thumping of last place Burnaby. Delta then travelled to Nanaimo Saturday and edged the Timbermen 10-9. Cody Hoegg’s hat trick goal with 7:50 remaining prove to be the difference after Zach Kyriacethys had tied the game 21 seconds earlier. Mitch Sandberg had a goal and three assists, while Richmond also had four points with a pair of goals. Ashton Leclair made 38 saves.

McNamraras win NORECA Open Beach Trials in Toronto

It’s more success in the sand for Tsawwassen volleyball standouts Megan and Nicole McNamara except this time back in their home country. After leading the UCLA Bruins to their first-ever NCAA national championship last month, the McNamaras were in Toronto where they captured the women’s division at Volleyball Canada’s NORCECA Open Beach

Trials. The playdowns determine rankings and nominations for NORECA tournaments later this year including events in Cana, Dominican Republic (Sept. 20-24), Ochos Rios, Jamaica (Nov. 1-5), and Martinique, France (date TBA). The McNamaras topped the 13-team field. The South Delta Secondary graduates did it all for the

Bruins this past season, earning All-American honours for the third straight year. They were also named to the NCAA and Pac-12 All-Tournament teams and Pac-12 Pair of the Year. The McNamaras also made their debut on the FIVB Grand Prix Tour just days after their national title win in Alabama, finishing fourth at Bangkok Open.

Our Mom, Grandma, Auntie Kay, passed away peacefully at Delta Hospital at the age of 93. Born and raised in Regina, she lived in the small town of Milestone, eventually moving westward to Ladner in 1973. Mom was wonderfully devoted to her seven children David (Carol), Mary Ellen (Denny), Arleen (Rob), Kathy (Neil), Patty (Peter), Mark (Marie Claude), and Laureen. A loving Grandma to Ally, Taylor, Davis, Raeleen, Ross, Andrea, Ellee, Jaideen, Jared, Alyssa, Kaylyn and Sara. Also, she was an Aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. Mom worked 33 years for the Royal Bank, retiring from the Tsawwassen Branch where she was reputable and admired. Throughout her retirement she remained President of the Royal Bank Pensioners organizing meetings, mailings and the Annual Christmas Luncheon. A faithful Roman Catholic, Mom spent countless hours volunteering for Sacred Heart Parish. An avid sport enthusiast watching her children and grandchildren at all their activities. A loyal Saskatchewan Roughrider fan at heart. Mom lead by example, no task too small or too large that she would not tackle. Mom was a strong, determined and a very independent women. We will miss her every day. A special thank you to all the staff at Delta Hospital and to our sisters Mary Ellen and Arleen who provided invaluable care to Mom for many years. A private family Memorial will be held at Gardens of Gethsemani. Condolences may be offered at www.deltafuneral.ca Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040

MOUNTAIN, Hugh James May 24, 1927 - June 15, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. Hugh leaves his loving wife of 63 years Wilma, his children Deb, Gail (Ian), Richard, David (Annika); his six grandchildren, Eric (Traci), Tehya (Cole), Emily, Carly, Cole and Ryder and three great-grand children, Leo, Safara and Ramona. He and Wilma brought their family from Montreal to Tsawwassen in 1979 where they started and ran Wilmount Engineering, an electrical equipment sales business. Dad was devoted to family, work and golf. He led by example and appreciated honesty, integrity and hard work. He was a straight shooter in personal relationships, business and golf. He was a proud member of Beach Grove Golf Club for 35 years. His only regret in life may have been only scoring a single hole-in-one. There will be a celebration of Hugh’s life at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner, BC

SAGE, Robert Harmon December 30, 1938 - June 15, 2018 Bob was born in Lacombe, Alberta, and raised in Calgary. After attending university in Montana and Calgary, he worked as a social worker in the fields of Child Welfare and Corrections. He married Helen in 1971 and moved to Nanaimo where he eventually started his own business, a pet store called Sage’s Pet Place. He thoroughly enjoyed helping many customers, young and old, for over 20 years. In 1989, the family moved to Coquitlam and Bob began his retirement. He was able to reconnect with his longstanding love of art. In the ensuing years, he created many gorgeous pieces of art including paintings, pieces of pottery, and sculptures in wood, bronze, and stone. Bob and Helen moved to Tsawwassen in 2001. Bob continued to make new friends and earned the nickname “Friendly Bob”. He also began a new endeavor, “Grandpa’s Day Care” looking after his grandchildren, Sid and Lila, which gave him enormous joy and fulfillment. Bob’s curiosity and excitement about the world was contagious and inspirational. Very few science documentaries went unwatched! Travelling was always a highlight of his life and he loved learning about different cultures. He passed on this sense of adventure to his entire family and encouraged them to always be open to new experiences and to follow their dreams. He will be remembered for being fun and jovial but also for taking an interest in serious matters and always ready for a lively conversation or debate. Bob passed away on June 15, 2018. He will be missed greatly by his family: wife, Helen, children Laura (Bern), Erin (Andre), Dave (Cheryl), and grandchildren Sid, Lila, Sam, Josie, Ryan and Callum, as well as his extended family and friends, including some that go back as far as elementary school. He was predeceased by his only brother, Gerry, in 2011. Gerry’s wife, Ola, who Bob affectionately referred to as “my big sister”, as well as her children, Natalie and Chris and their families, also share our loss. The family wants to extend our sincere and heartfelt thanks to Dr. H. Hollinger who gave Bob the utmost in care and compassion over the years. Also, we are most grateful for the care provided by the Delta Hospital staff, the Home Nursing Care team, the Paramed Home Support Workers, and all the staff and volunteers of the Delta Hospice Society. All of Bob’s family and friends have lost a wonderful, much loved man who was such a pleasure to know. A celebration of his life will be held at Cammidge House, 498 Boundary Bay Road, Delta, on Saturday, July 7th from 2 - 4 pm, with a sharing of stories and remembrances around 3 pm. Everyone is welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Delta Hospice Society or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
