Third greenhouse goes to pot
104th Street facility in East Delta in final stages of federal government licensing SANDOR GYARMATI

Yet another Delta greenhouse is jumping to the cannabis business. Rubicon Organics is converting a large greenhouse on 104th Street in East Delta to grow pot. The firm, which also has operations in California and Washington state, describes itself as “the industry leader in lowcost, certified organic cannabis production.” The company says it’s in the final stages of the federal government licensing process and anticipates approval in the next few months. “The Pacific Northwest boasts ideal natural lighting conditions for growing marijuana, and access to low-cost hydro-electricity. Our 20-acre property in British Columbia is home to a 125,000-square-foot greenhouse facility. This existing greenhouse has been retrofitted for optimal cannabis harvesting, and includes a

Pedestrian bridges at harbour come with big price tag SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Replacement of two pedestrian bridges near Ladner Harbour could finally be on the horizon, although the price tag might prove a little too rich for the city. Delta council has agreed to refer the project to a budget workshop to determine if it will be part of spending priorities for 2019. The cost of replacing an existing and a decommissioned bridge around the lagoon adjacent to Ladner Harbour Park is an estimated $400,000. During an initial assessment last year, a consult-

The trail in the area had two wooden bridges that crossed the water channels there. In 2009, the province removed one of the bridges due to its poor
condition, resulting in an incomplete pedestrian loop. A Delta report notes the remaining crossing has significantly deteriorated and will need to be removed shortly.
It looked like things would change a few years ago when the Kiwanis Club of LadnerTsawwassen expressed an interest in partnering in a replacement. However, the estimated cost was nowhere near the current price. The club has since disbanded and the other service clubs are occupied with other initiatives. During discussion of the project, Coun. Ian Paton quipped things aren’t like the old days when a large wooden plank could be thrown across a ditch, creating a bridge. Coun. Robert Campbell agreed, saying once the city is involved a project must be built to a certain standard.

Approved Delta casino likely to operate under stricter rules
NDP pledges to implement money laundering recommendations
SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The casino recently approved for Delta could end up with much different oversight. Attorney General David Eby released Dr. Peter German’s final report on money laundering in B.C. casinos to the public Wednesday and pledged to implement the recommendations. “While the River Rock Casino was a focal point, no major Lower Mainland casino was spared. Why did this occur? Because it could,” said German. A key recommendation in the report is replacing the B.C. Lottery Corporation as the chief regulatory body for casinos in the province. The report points to a dysfunctional relationship between BCLC and the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch as a major reason money laundering flourished. The report calls for the creation of an independent regulator, which would also regulate BCLC, which would be funded through gaming revenue. Another recommendation is the creation of a designated police unit for the gambling industry. The report also recom-

BCLC says it will work with service providers, law enforcement and regulators to keep dirty money out of casinos. Money laundering and crime were major issues raised by opponents of the proposed Cascades Casino Delta, which received conditional approval from Delta council after a contentious public hearing in May.
Saying his company would welcome whatever measures are recommended by German, Gateway CAO Jag Nijjar, who also spoke at the hearing, said extensive measures are already in place. “If you come with some money and you play a little bit, you can’t get a cheque for the money you came in with. I’d have to be able to verify through video surveillance or the supervisor that you actually played and won. If you come in with $10,000, you’re going to walk out with that same cash,” he said. He also noted that cash

transactions of $10,000 or more are reported if deemed suspicions, while new rules involve any transaction over $10,000 requiring proof of source of funds. That means a receipt from the bank. “Most of our large players, the legitimate players, know the rules and come in with bank draft anyways,” he added. To be built at the Delta Town & Country Inn site in Ladner, the $70-million Cascades Casino Delta complex still requires final approvals. Gateway is planning to open the facility in 2020.

SMILE, WE HAVE IT GOOD!
We are Lucky to live in relative comfort and safety here in Canada. Yes it’s easy to grumble about the snow, the traffic and other minor inconveniences of our First World, but imagine living in a war-torn country that can not offer you relative comfort and safety. My wife and I are both immigrants from Ireland. We came to Canada 30 plus years ago and we have had a great life in this country. We raised 5 children and have always been welcome in our community, our church, and our neighborhood, getting to know people from all corners of the world. We did not have any big problems coming to Canada, even though it took months to get the paperwork complete, it was worth the wait. We were lucky we were not coming from a war torn country like Northern Ireland, or Vietnam then or Syria now. We were from the South of Ireland where there was no war. Canada welcomes both types of immigration, the economic immigrants like us, and the refugees who have to get out of their old country for safety. Canada wins because of all of these people and it makes our country strong. Yes, sometimes it takes new immigrants, of a very different culture from Canada, a generation to learn the ways of this country, but that is a small price to pay to bring all these great people to Canada. When we see, what is happening to the South of us and the mindset that goes with that we shake our head and thank God that we live in Canada. This was paid for by the O’Sullivan Family of Delta, B.C. and P W Trenchless Construction Inc.

Boundary Bay resident Kendra Luckow was at Delta council Monday night with a proposal urging Delta to pass a bylaw that would prohibit the sale and trade of shark fins in Delta. “Obviously I would love to have Delta backing me on this, but if that doesn’t happen it won’t stop me from moving forward,” she
said. Shark finning is the removal of fins once the shark has been fished from the ocean. Once the fins
have been sliced from the body, the carcass is discarded back into the water, often while the shark is still alive.

t’s a common reaction, but it’s far from an accurate one. When I tell people the Optimist will start publishing weekly, the response I typically get is a combination of sympathy and trepidation. That’s because many interpret the move as the beginning of the end, that going from twice a week to once a week puts us on a slippery slope to oblivion. I know I’m biased, but I’m having a hard time buying it. There’s absolutely no doubt the Internet and social media have dramatically changed the media landscape in recent years, but that doesn’t spell the end of newspapers. It simply means they need to adapt to the new reality, which is exactly what we’re doing. If I may be so bold, I believe that readers still want the content that we provide; they want to know what’s going on in their community and what’s on sale in their local stores. The difference now is that an increasing number of them are looking to access that information in a 21st century way, which is hardly surprising given the instantaneous world we live in. It’s why the Optimist website set a record for page views in April, only to surpass that total in May and again this month. It’s clear that more and more readers are consuming our content via smartphones and computer screens so it only make sense we would increase the emphasis we put on that aspect of our operation. That doesn’t mean print is going away anytime soon because there are still a great many people who prefer to get their news that way, but by going to once a week distribution we’re positioning ourselves to better serve both sets of readers moving forward. Still don’t believe me and figure the Optimist isn’t going to make it to its 100th birthday four years from now? Well, let me tell you about a couple of our sister papers, the Vancouver Courier and the Richmond News, which have both converted to once a week and are in better financial health now than they’ve been in years. Both papers have even added staff to their editorial departments since the move as they continue to increase their online presence. The bottom line is that newspapers are information companies and that’s not going to change, although how we get you that content will continually evolve in an ever-changing world.
Summer adventures await kids who put down screen
W
ell, it’s officially a done deal. It’s the end of another school year today and several weeks of summertime fun is on the horizon for school-aged children in Delta. I have spent the past few weeks participating in wrap up parties with hundreds of kids in the school district. They have usually involved some sort of salad dished off the back of my truck followed up with a healthy spray down from the hose. It is amazing what a little water can do for the kids’ fun meters. Besides learning some of the aspects of farming through understanding seed charts, planting and harvesting, the end result of eating was a big focus this year. I would bring food the young farmers had chosen to plant and we would eat it so that we would know what to expect at harvest time. Project Pickle kids in Delta ate hundreds of pounds of carrots, peas, cucumbers radishes, spinach, strawberries and other goodies over the course of the year. It was really quite interesting to note some of the finer takeaways from these weekly snack sessions. Sadly, there are lots of kids who do not eat a variety of vegetables at home. There are children in Delta who have never had lettuce before. There are children
Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER
who have never had a strawberry or watermelon before. There are children in Delta who do not want to plant a seed or pull a carrot because they are concerned their parents will get mad at them for getting their hands dirty. These are isolated observations, and the majority of kids seem to be enjoying a regular proper diet, but these realities remind us that kids need to be engaged and creative around food. I have encouraged them all to ride their bikes or walk to the school farms over the summer and they have been instructed as to what they can harvest and when. Back in the good ol’ days (as I instantly age myself), a good bike adventure was a daily part of summer. Some change in your jeans for a Popsicle or two and a good destination made for daily
adventure and occasionally misadventure, if you were lucky. Back then, of course, there was usually a mom who was able to stay at home and pretty much force you to go outside, rain or shine. TV was for cartoons in the morning and, if we were good, maybe a show or two at night. Todays’ kids don’t all have that luxury of a stay at home mom or dad. We have all heard about the negative effects of too much “screen time” for kids. The American Academy of Paediatrics notes that children between eight and 18 average 7.5 hours of screen time a day which is resulting in major health problems, including childhood obesity and behavioural and mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Luckily there are lots of great day trip adventures for kids in our communities, including Centennial Beach, Watershed Park, various waterparks, pools and parks. Put the allowance in their pockets and push those kids out the door on their bikes in the morning (after breakfast, of course). They will have a blast, especially if they don’t have a phone to distract them. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food. Skilled tradespeople key to services we all enjoy
Editor: Re: Residents in Boundary Bay deserve a tax rebate for road work delays, letter to the editor, June 6 This letter is to the person who complained about the flaggers and the tradespeople who are “contributing” to her road delays in and out of Boundary Bay, and to anyone else who is unaware of how the modern world actually works. My husband has been a tradesperson for more than 30 years in B.C. Early in his career, he worked in construction and heavy equipment in the mining industry before he went to BCIT to train in electronics. It took him many years to apprentice as a journeyman, and to get his Red Seal certificate. Now he trains other apprentices to do the same, safely, in an industry which apparently doesn’t always appreciate what he has done for it. He is the guy that, if you even notice him, is either up a pole or down a hole. When up in the air in his cherry-picker, he is exposed to live electrical current, which could easily kill him or his co-workers if not handled properly. When he is underground, he is working in a confined space, which can be equally as dangerous. He still works graveyard shifts, while you are probably sleeping, in order not to inconvenience you too much, although this isn’t always possible. The next time you see “five guys looking down a hole,” they are skilled tradespeople who are
52nd Street project could provide jobs for years
CANADA DAY
Editor: Regarding the never-ending roadwork on 52nd Street in Tsawwassen, I have a couple items: 1. Where could a guy apply to get on full-time with the crew? Seems to me that project could take me right to retirement with the possibility of my grandkids finding work there too in 10 years or so. 2. Instead of an endless stream of excuses, I would like to see someone with Metro Vancouver issue a formal apology to the residents of Delta for this neverending mess. With some better planning, firmer deadlines and better coordination and execution between jurisdictions, we would have been cruising down a smooth and beautiful roadway many, many months ago. Craig McDonald either planning the next step in the project, solving a problem related to the project or talking to another guy who is down a hole working to move the project forward. Even though the flaggers may not be as “skilled” as the tradespeople, they do play a vital role in keeping their co-workers safe in a work zone that is full of hazards, not the least of which are impatient drivers who do not recognize the risks they face every day. When you see a flagger looking at his/her phone, don’t assume he/she is looking at Facebook; he/ she might be reading an important text message from a supervisor (or not). Don’t worry about it. If a flagger isn’t doing his/her job properly, the tradespeople will certainly let their superiors know about it, and there will likely be a different flagger at the worksite the next day. So, the next time you drive down a paved road,
or use your cell phone (hopefully not at the same time), turn on the lights, oven or air conditioning in your house, watch a hockey game on TV or take a hot shower, remember this: God did not create the infrastructure that makes all of these activities possible in seven days. Mother Nature did not make it possible for telephone poles to grow out of the ground like trees all over the province. Skilled tradespeople built this infrastructure for all of us, over many years of hard work and at great risk to themselves. These hard-working men and women continue to maintain it so that you can have all of the modern day conveniences you take for granted every day. So take your head out of the sand and have some respect. After all, tradespeople are people too. The world, as you know it, would probably stop turning without them. A. Cameron
Civic politicians aren’t doing much to create affordable rental housing
Editor: Although it was encouraging to hear this week that the province signed an agreement with the federal government that will see almost $1 billion go to affordable housing across the province, it’s doubtful Delta residents with the present Delta council mindset will see any benefits. Based on the housing approvals and comments made by Delta council at a public hearing this week, councillors seem to be
HAPPY
stuck on rewind, actually believing that approving more privately-owned coach houses is a solution to affordable rental housing for Delta. My aching senior hips climbing towering coach house staircases would tell them otherwise. In addition, council’s attempt to create more seniors’ housing fell woefully short too. Approval of a 24-unit privately-owned strata complex for the 55+ age category at the public hearing displays council’s
further disconnect with the average senior’s needs. When you look beyond the complex’s glossy PR veneer, shiny glass balconies, rooftop patio gardens, outdoor fireplace BBQ, bistro table, fitness centre and spa – all proposed by the property owner/architect - council approved an expensive, privately-owned complex that the average downsizing senior would struggle to afford, but that realtors will salivate to sell. Greenhouses giving back through new splash park
Youngsters will soon have fun at the new Ladner Rotary Splash Park in Memorial Park thanks to donations from three local greenhouses. Village Farms, the first greenhouse to commit to the project, and Sunnyside Produce Ltd. have each donated $5,000, while Millennium Pacific Greenhouses has contributed $3,000. They are among six local greenhouses that have contributed a total of
$28,000 to the splash park project along with the rest of the local farming community. Village Farms produces premium greenhouse tomatoes, bell peppers and cucumbers at seven greenhouses in B.C., including a site on Ladner Trunk Road, and in Texas. Sunnyside Produce Ltd. produces bell peppers at its facility on Ladner Trunk Road, while Millennium Pacific Greenhouses, a family-run business on
Arthur Drive in Ladner, grows seven types of tomatoes for retail grocers. The $650,000 Ladner Rotary Splash Park is a partnership between the Rotary Club of Ladner, with the support of sponsors and donors, and the City of Delta. The theme of the water play area will honour Delta’s farming heritage. The splash park is expected to open soon, with an official opening scheduled for July 14.

Delta and Richmond employers expect a robust hiring climate for the third quarter of 2018, according to the latest ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey. “Survey data reveals that 33 per cent of employers plan to hire for the upcoming quarter (July to September), while zero per cent anticipate cutbacks,” said Richard Plumb of Manpower’s Vancouver office. Another 67 per cent of employers plan to maintain their current staffing levels in the upcoming quarter. With seasonal variations removed from the data, Richmond and Delta’s third quarter net employment outlook of 31 per cent is a four percent-
age point increase when compared to the previous quarterly outlook, according to Manpower. It’s also an increase of 24 percentage points from the outlook reported during the same time last year, indicating a brisk hiring pace for the upcoming months. “Even though prospects are weaker in six of 10 industry sectors compared to last quarter, we’re still seeing a positive hiring climate for most of the country,” said Darlene Minatel, country manager for ManpowerGroup Canada. “The numbers reflect a pattern of a labour market nearing capacity, with unemployment in some regions at record lows. For job seekers, this could mean larger wage gains in the quarter to come.”
Chamber of commerce to host ‘networking soiree’
The Delta Chamber of Commerce is holding a “networking soiree” for women in business on Wednesday, July 4. Female entrepreneurs and business leaders, along with Delta MP Carla Qualtrough, will gather for an afternoon of refreshments, networking and an opportunity to learn about a new federal government program, the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy. The program is an
investment of $1.65 billion over three years, which will improve women’s access to capital to start and grow their businesses, the chamber’s website notes. The event will be held in the backyard of chamber vice-chair Yvonne Anderson. It goes from 4 to 6 p.m. The event is complimentary but registration is required. Register at deltachamber.ca.

New aircraft changes the game for Boundary Bay flight school IAN JACQUES

John Montgomery describes it as a game changer. The founder of the Professional Flight Centre at Boundary Bay Airport celebrated the recent acquisition of the Cirrus SR-20 (G1000) aircraft with friends, colleagues and students at the airport last Saturday. The aircraft features a durable all-composite structure with the signature Cirrus Airframe Parachute System, making the SR series one of the safest and most versatile training airplanes available today. “This is a game changer on more than one front. We are now a certified Cirrus training centre, so

Steve Charlesworth (left) and Daniel Cheng check out the new Cirrus SR-20 (G1000) training aircraft. if someone needs training after they purchase, we can do the training, which is quite a big deal because otherwise they would have to go to the U.S. for training,” said Montgomery. “We also have the maintenance program and we are the only one in Western Canada that has that.”
Montgomery said last Saturday’s celebration gave Professional Flight Centre the opportunity to unveil the new high-tech airplane, which it purchased five months ago. He said the centre has been flying the plane quite regularly since the purchase.
“We are getting more interest all the time. We have done a lot of inhouse training for our instructors to learn how to fly the aircraft,” he said. “Our senior partner Jia Jong has a very much forward vision and she has a group of two ladies from Mainland China that are of the same mind and thus they decided to buy this airplane. There is a lot of business around the world and in China and a big market for this. We have a good fleet of airplanes, but Cirrus is way more hightech than anything we have running.” Montgomery said the celebration also included representatives from Cirrus who not only provided a demonstration of the aircraft but brought along their corporate jet.

As I read a daily devotion booklet I was reminded of the high calling for each person who claims faith in God through being a follower of Jesus, to be a living witness. We all tell stories every day as we recount events of situations we have encountered. This natural inclination to storytelling is often just a retelling of the observed facts. As I read the devotional booklet, which happens to be a collection of daily readings offered by a different person each day, a simple point was clarified. As we tell our story what is the link to seeing or understanding God’s presence in every situation? This is the moment of our
Minister’s Minute DANIEL KIRKEGAARD
Tsawwassen United Church
witness becoming real. For example, we welcomed guests last weekend, including a young man, Colton, we haven’t seen for at least 10 years. He is now married, so we met his wife, and he is now
a youth pastor with a passion for missionary work. In our conversations we came to realize we had common acquaintances, Jeff and Deanne, who have been working in Prague for about 20 years. It just so happens that I studied with them at university 25 years ago. The remembrance of these friends and their ministry was a wonderful affirmation of how their witness of God’s grace has influenced people far and wide, and encouraged next generation pastors in their work. God’s presence in our lives is the tie that binds our stories together in goodness, grace, provision and love.

Unique gardens open to public during Point tour elry designer has applied her talents in creating a series of “garden rooms” nestled in a forest setting. A quilter has used a quilter’s eye and a geometric approach to the plantings and paths. A 4.5-acre property uses over 100 camellias and rhododendrons and 150-yearold Japanese maples as separation from the barns and turnout areas for their Peruvian Paso horses. Ticket prices are $20 Cdn or $15 US per person and will be available July 1 at Nielson’s Home Building Center and Auntie Pam’s Country Store in Point Roberts, Harris Nurseryland and the Blue Door Interiors in Ladner, and Flowers Beautiful in Tsawwassen. Visitors are reminded that a passport or enhanced driver’s licence is required
to cross the border. Tickets will also be available up to 2 p.m. on the day of the tour at the corner of Tyee Drive and McKenzie Way, about a block after crossing the border. No tickets will be sold after 2 p.m. in order to give visitors enough time to tour the gardens. Ticket packages include a map of Point Roberts clearly marked with the locations of the gardens and afternoon tea as well as restaurants for those who wish to have lunch. The tour is the garden club’s main fundraiser and proceeds from it will fund beautification projects around the American peninsula. The class has been learning about mason bees, growing their own new potatoes and even took on a local food challenge that saw students turn strawberries picked at Westham Island Herb Farm into 70 jars of freezer jam. The students engaged in a variety of activities to gain a well-rounded understanding of the requirements for attracting mason bees and growing and preparing their own food. The mason bee activity was a community effort as neighbours led by Grandpa Rob welcomed the Grade 2s into their backyard garden to put out mason bee nests. All the planting and tending eventually turned into edible delights, which were shared with the garden community at the luncheon. The tables were set out among the children’s garden overhung with pop-up tents and laid with fine china, fancy table linens and unique centerpieces with purple cabbages as their vases. Older students, alumni of the school garden program, and parent volunteers were on hand to serve. Guests were treated to homemade scones with freezer jam and clotted cream, new potatoes with every topping imaginable, dessert squares and strawberry basil lemonade. The young student gardeners waited eagerly on their picnic blankets under the shade of trees for their turn to sample the fruits of their labour with many returning for second and, in some cases, third helpings of potatoes and sweets. Seated at the table this year were Bohmert, Randi Fraser from ITA Youth, Marie-Eve Masse from go2HR, assistant superintendent Nancy Gordon, District Career Education Programs coordinator Brian Tivy, Hawthorne principal Tara Fisher, ADST K-7 coordinator Jen Wilson, PAC co-chair Leanne Price, PAC member and coordinator of the garden party Jasmeen Dick, PAC member Kyla Pittman, elementary garden volunteer Jan Storer, helpful neighbours Carol Mckee and Ian Sanderluck, and Grandpa Rob.

Ladner’s Jas Singh brings his basketball career closer to home next season Former Delta Pacer standout Jas Singh is shifting his basketball career closer to home. The 6-foot-8 2017 DSS graduate will be playing at Simon Fraser University next season. Singh spent his freshman year at the NAIA level at Northwest University in Kirkland, WA. He made 25 starts, averaging 22.6 minutes. Singh recorded a .487 field-goal percentage, including 41.2 percent from beyond the arc, grabbed 4.5 rebounds a game and averaged eight points. In a game against South Oregon last December, he tallied a season-high 20 points in 39 minutes of floor time and picked up eight boards. “Jas is a long and skilled forward. He has a strong interior game but can stretch the floor with his ability to ball handle and knock down the three,” said SFU coach Steve Hansen. His size and versatility will be useful for the many styles we see in the GNAC, whether it is guarding centers inside or stretch-forwards.” Singh will be transferring into SFU’s Beedie School of Business as he takes his game to the NCAA Division Two level. “I chose to come to SFU because it is a great school academically and has a strong athletic program,” said Singh. “I also

Mosquito Red Sox are Delta Cup champions
The Tsawwassen Red Sox have capped an outstanding season in style by being crowned Delta Cup Mosquito Division champions. The Delta Cup minor baseaball playoffs featured the champions from the city’s three respective associations, with the Ladner Athletics and North Delta Cardinals joining the Red Sox. The Red Sox opened the playdowns with an 11-2 win over Ladner. It was just a 3-2 advantage after two innings when Tsawwassen’s ace pitcher Colton Cooper effortlessly took over with three solid innings, paving the way for his team’s victory. The second game saw North Delta score twice in the first inning. The Red Sox answered with one of their own and rookie standout Brady Roberts threw a pair of shutout innings. The Red Sox eventually opened up a 4-2

Earlier, the Red Sox won the Tsawwassen playoffs that featured seven teams battling for association bragging rights. The Red Sox got past the Blue Jays in the semi-finals then defeated the previously unbeaten Cubs in the championship game. The team finished with a sparkling 17-2-2 overall record thanks to great pitching, solid hitting and defensive plays. They were the perfect combination for a fun and complete season. Black Sox prevail in all-Ladner Midget AA final The Ladner Black Sox capped off an impressive season in style by capturing the B.C. Baseball’s Interlock League Midget AA championship with a hard fought 3-1 win over hometown rival Ladner Blue Jays. The Black Sox started off play in the 16-team league with a loss to Burnaby before they began to gel. The boys won 13 of their next 14 games, finishing third with a 13- 2 record. All three of the Ladner entries — including the Red Sox — finished in the top eight of the league, placing them in the Tier 1 playoffs. The Black Sox and Blue Jays both completed round-robin play with identical 3-0 records while the Red Sox finished in a tie for second place in their division. Thanks to a tiebreaker rule, the Red Sox advanced to the semi- finals with the Black Sox and Blue Jays. It was the first time in league history that three teams from the same association made it to the final four.
The Ladner Black Sox are Midget AA Lower Mainland Interlock League playoff champions. In the first semi-final game, the Blue Jays beat the Red Sox 8-0 on the strength of starting pitcher Tyler MacIntosh and timely hitting. In the second semi- final game, the Black Sox outlasted the North Shore Cubs 10-3 with Jordan Sanders working six strong innings on the mound. These wins set up another battle of the top two Ladner
teams for the league playoff title. The earlier regular season meeting between friendly rivals went down to the wire with the Black Sox scoring in the bottom of the seventh for a 3-2 victory. The championship game was a pitcher’s duel from the start. The Blue Jays scored their run in the top of the first inning when Michael Tersigni doubled home starting pitcher Ryan
MacKenzie. The score remained 1-0 until the Black Sox batters finally figured out MacKenzie in the bottom of the fifth. They scored three runs as Tyler Sanders drew a walk, stole second and came around to make it 1-1. Brandon Bach then walked, chasing MacKenzie. The Blue Jays reliever then hit Carson Hemenway with a pitch, putting him on first base. He
advanced to third on a single by Connor Laidlaw and scored on a passed ball for the go ahead run. Laidlaw then stole third and added an insurance run on a single by Carson Gray. The score held up the rest of the way on the strength of Hemenway pitching six strong innings for the victory. Jordan Sanders worked a scoreless seventh inning for the save. The Black Sox young roster also featured: Evan Hixt, Reid Rogers, Brandon Phillips, Brett Hauser, Levi Froude, and Kian Mackie. “At the beginning of the season, we were not sure how the team would fare against the other teams in the league as we have seven first-year (grade 10) Midget players playing against teams with mostly grade 11 and 12’s,” said proud Black Sox head coach Brian Burns. He thanked assistant coaches Grant Laidlaw, Kim Mackie, Tyler Honigman; team manager Shari Barr and the players for their hard work and dedication.
