More than $2 million to fix latest overpass damage PHIL MELNYCHUK p m e l nyc h u k@ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Fixing the 112th Street/ Hwy. 99 overpass could cost more than $2 million, although there’s no timeline yet for those repairs. The structure was damaged Dec. 28, when a truck southbound on Hwy. 99, had its overheight load of steel beams smash into the southbound lanes of the overpass, snarling traffic for hours. According to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure on Monday, the collision severed the reinforcing strands in two of the girders on the overpass and damaged the concrete on two others. “A permanent repair
design will have to be completed before a final cost estimate can be provided,” the ministry said. The crash happened at midday and closed traffic heading southbound on Hwy. 99, for hours. Both southbound lanes on Hwy. 99 reopened early morning on Dec. 29 Transportation Minister Rob Fleming said last week that Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement has suspended the safety certificate for Chohan Freight Forwarders Ltd. “This means the company’s entire fleet of 65 commercial vehicles will be unable to operate in B.C. as of 4:30 p.m., on Friday, Dec. 29, 2023,” Fleming said in a reelease. “Furthermore, the driver and the carrier responsible will face the
toughest fines in the country. The outcome of the investigation could lead to further action,” Fleming said. The suspension of the company’s National Safety Code safety certificate will remain in place until CVSE completes its investigation, the ministry confirmed Monday. Chohan company spokesperson Carly Hunter said Friday that the operator of the truck is not a company driver, and that he failed to wait for his permit and route directions for the oversized load. She said the driver called the safety department saying that his load was oversized. “Our safety manager advised the owneroperator to wait while he obtained the permit.

Delta firefighters and highways officials survey the damage to the 112th Street overpass. Within eight minutes, the safety manager received a call from the owner-operator advising that he had crashed into the overpass,” Hunter said by email. She added that the company has been
working hard with CVSE and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure over the past two years. “Our company has an exemplary safety rating and has been in com-
pliance with all safety regulations. At this time, we are cooperating with all investigating agencies and no further comment will be provided.”

City, police seeking tougher penalties PHIL MELNYCHUK p m e l nyc h u k@ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The City of Delta and its police want the province to consider heightdetection systems and better warning signs at the 112th Street/Hwy. 99 overpass, or any other overpasses, that have been, or could be hit by big trucks. A/Insp. James Sandberg said the city will ask for that as part of the damage assessment to the 112th Street overpass, following a crash Dec. 28. Steel girders being
hauled by a Chohan Freight Forwarders truck on Hwy. 99, impaled the overpass above at about noon that day, completely blocking Hwy. 99 southbound for hours. Delta police and the city will also lobby for even tougher penalties for truckers and their companies involved in such crashes. “We understand the frustration, inconvenience, and expense, caused by these collisions and want to assure the public that the city and the police are actively working in collabora-

Coun. Dylan Kruger has also said that penalties are still not tough enough. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Rob Fleming recently announced higher fines for truck drivers involved in such collisions, at a news event on Dec. 14, in Delta. Fleming said then that fines will increase to $575 for over-height vehicles, but the province also is talking with the trucking association about increasing fines further.

Overpass Crash Report, Chohan Freight Forwarders has been involved in five previous overpass crashes in the past two years, one of those at the same location, Hwy. 99 and 112th Street, on Feb. 17, 2022, with the cause listed as driver error. However, the Dec. 28 crash was the first incident involving the company in 2023. • On Dec. 10, 2021, Chohan Freight Forwarders was involved in an overpass crash on Hwy. 1, at 192nd Street, with

Hwy. 17A overpass repairs start Monday
Project expected to take two months PHIL MELNYCHUK
pmelnychuk@delta-optimist.com
The province isn’t wasting time patching up the Hwy. 17A overpass, after the southbound lanes were damaged when a truck piled into it last summer. Work begins Monday, Jan. 8, for about two months, and will require nightly closures of the southbound lanes, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., seven days a week. During the daytime, from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., a southbound lane will remain open at a reduced width, while the northbound lanes of Hwy. 17A and the northbound ramps to Hwy. 99 will
remain fully open. However, two weekends in January, Jan. 12 to 14, and Jan. 19 to 21, will require the full closure of the southbound lanes, as well as the closure of the southbound lanes of Hwy. 99. The hours for the above closures are from 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12, until 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14. The same hours are in effect for the Jan. 19 to 21 closing. As a result, southbound vehicles must detour via Hwy. 17A, south to Ladner Trunk Road, and then rejoin Hwy. 99 at the Matthews interchange. In addition, there will be a full closure of the southbound lanes of Hwy.
17A overpass from Friday, Jan. 26, at 5 a.m., until Sunday, Jan. 27, at 3 p.m. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure announced the schedule on Dec. 21 for the $1.7-million project after it was delayed for several weeks, after a previous start date in November, so as not to impact the Christmas season. That delay added $300,000 to the cost of the project. “The repairs to the crossing will be extensive, involving demolition and girder installation,” the ministry said. “All travellers taking Hwy. 99 southbound are advised to take alternate routes or add additional travel time, as

terminal, are advised to use Hwy. 91 over the Alex Fraser Bridge, then take Hwy. 17 that runs directly to the terminal. The overpass was damaged when a big truck,
southbound on Hwy. 99, smashed into the underside of the overpass on July 18. Two of the five girders of the overpass, built in 1959, need significant repairs.

Dredging on, for now, in historic Ladner Harbour The port authority in 2021 announced one-time funding focusing on Ladner Harbour and Gunderson Slough SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Dredging is taking place at Ladner Harbour, but it remains to be seen how much more will be on the horizon. Work commenced on Dec. 11 and is scheduled for about 30 days, using remaining money from the one-time $1 million in funding provided by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority three years ago. According to the City of Delta, the work faced permitting delays as well as a limited scheduling opportunity due to fisheries windows, but all approvals are now in place. Dredging volumes are expected to be between 30,000-and33,000 cubic metres. The City of Delta, Richmond, Tsawwassen First Nation and Musquem Indian Band have joined together to lobby for a regular maintenance program, urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to provide action on local channel dredging in the lower Fraser as
silt volumes build. They said they recognize the VFPA’s commitment to continue to work with them along with other government agencies and stakeholders toward a long-term sustainable dredging program. While they appreciated the port’s $1 million in funding for local Delta channel dredging, they were hopeful that contribution would be a catalyst toward the development of a comprehensive, long-term plan for maintaining the local channels. This summer, more than 150 frustrated float homeowners and business owners made their anger known at a town hall meeting on the ongoing issue at a packed town hall meeting at Fisherman’s Hall in Ladner. The message many conveyed was made loud and clear that they don’t want to hear their political representatives describing how much they have been advocating, wanting to finally see results. Mayor George Harvie, Delta South

MLA Ian Paton and Delta MP Carla Qualtrough spoke of their continued frustration getting someone to assume responsibility for immediate dredging to alleviate the rapidly silting-up secondary channels of the Fraser River, as well as an ongoing maintenance program to ensure the current situation can be avoided. All three politicians noted the port
authority was responsible before, but was no longer continuing what should still be its obligation, and, ever since then, the federal and provincial governments have passed the buck while showing an unwillingness to address the worsening problem. Acknowledging the efforts of the Ladner Sediment Group, Qualtrough said the issue has been “the biggest jurisdictional passing of the buck” she’s ever experienced since she was elected, suggesting the residents form a new, larger advocacy group. Paton, who submitted a petition in the legislature, said it’s not worth “chasing down” $12-to-$14 million every 10 years to get dredging done at one time, only to see the problem come back. Instead, an ongoing maintenance program costing $2 million a year makes sense. The province has a role to play, since it controls water lot leases, but the government refuses to even acknowledge there is an issue, he said.

B.C. Transportation Minister Fleming talks second Ladner exit SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
The B.C. government sympathizes with the City of Delta’s request for a second exit out of Ladner, but it will be up to whatever funding arrives from the feds. That was the response from Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, when asked by the Optimist Dec. 14, about the status of federal dollars for the George Massey Tunnel replacement and the city’s ongoing call for a second exit to be included in the project. Fleming, who was at the Nordel Way commercial vehicle inspection facility for a provincial announcement on the trucking industry,
SANDOR GYARMATI PHOTO
Rob Fleming, BC Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, was at the Nordel CVSE Inspection Station in Delta. said there is already an understanding about the importance of the Hwy. 99 corridor, the tunnel and its congestion prob-
lems. They had a commitment from Ottawa to help fund the project, but it is still not clear just how much.
“So, a lot of understanding, but not a lot of dollars yet. We do have a very strong commitment, as said by a number of the prime minister’s ministers and the prime minister himself, so, we’re hoping Budget 2024 is going to be an opportunity for the federal government to deliver a commitment that they’ve explicitly made on a number of occasions to be a funding partner,” said Fleming. He noted Canada has other significant infrastructure that is aging and needs replacement. The tunnel project with its associated highway upgrades is just as important. “We don’t think Hwy . 99 and the Massey Tunnel replacement are any different than,
let’s say, the Champlain Bridge in Quebec or the Gordie Howe (International) Bridge connecting Windsor and Detroit. “Those were large projects that needed to be built for a variety of reasons and this is British Columbia’s project that falls into that category, and we hope to have an announcement. “I’ve said very carefully and said repeatedly to the mayor of Delta (George Harvie) that we sympathize with the access they want, we applaud the housing ambitions which are meeting the province’s as well, and we’re working together to convince Ottawa that a funding contribution would allow us to add to a project that’s already been
approved and is under construction,” he added. In a letter to Premier David Eby this year, Harvie wrote, “The connection of River Road over Highway 99 remains a vital component for the City of Delta, as it provides a much needed secondary access from Ladner, as well as support pedestrian and cycling connections.” A recent Delta staff report notes that the province is undertaking a feasibility planning study for the proposed new connection and indicated that a decision to advance the River Road overpass would need to consider several factors, including the study results and securing federal funding. The new tunnel is to be completed in 2030.

Strong support for Delta police body-worn cameras SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
The Delta Police Department’s body-worn camera initiative continues to receive strong public support. That’s according to a DPD community survey conducted in September 2023, following a survey that was conducted the year prior. Noting it adds to the accountability and transparency of the department, Chief Neil Dubord told a Dec. 13 meeting of the Delta Police Board that the survey found 93 per cent approval in the September 2022 survey, and it was 92 per cent in the latest survey. Dubord said they had a recent meeting with B.C.’s Solicitor General
who also expressed interest and support for the Delta program, the first in the province. The current use of cameras is authorized only in certain situations such as at a protest, demonstration or other organized or spontaneous event that is unlawful or characterized by unlawful activity, as well as use for Interdiction Team policing activities directed at gang violence prevention. Some of the other situations include use by members assigned to the Traffic Section, in the course of stopping vehicles and engaging with drivers, as well as use by members assigned to the Patrol Services Section. A report to the police board notes that, current-
ly, the DPD is equipped with 20 body-worn cameras acquired at a cost of roughly $15,000. While the complete expenditure for the equipment and related gear amounted to $24,000, approximately $9,000 was subsidized through the Police Training and Equipment Grant provided by the provincial Civil Forfeiture Office. The report also notes that, overall, the survey feedback shows that the program aligns well with DPD’s community-first policing approach. The department, in 2022, became the first in B.C. to deploy the cameras operationally, starting with the Interdiction Team. It later expanded to the Traffic Section and then with frontline patrol.
DELTA OPTIMIST FILE
The report notes that many survey respondents believe that the cameras will increase public confidence in the police’s conduct and integrity, as the recorded interactions will provide an unbiased account of incidents, reducing misunderstandings and disputes.

OPINION Time to get tough on fireworks Editor’s Note IAN JACQUES
A
n impromptu fireworks show on New Year’s Eve has ended in tragedy for a local resident. A post on several local Facebook groups has the community buzzing and not in a good way as we open 2024. On Monday, Aleisha Ham posted that following someone’s fireworks fun Sunday night, her horse was spooked and broke his leg, resulting in the animal being euthanized. “We foaled him out at our place 20 years ago and he was just the sweetest boy,” she wrote. “Seeing him lie there in pain was awful. I was able to give him enough sedation to keep him comfortable, until my boss arrived to euthanize, but it should have never happened. I would just love for those who lit fireworks off to be more diligent of your surroundings and unknowns. I know this was an accident, but for your five min of ohhhhs and ahhhhs . . . do better next time.” The posts have more than 200 comments – almost all of them relating other horror stories of scared pets and how much they hate the fireworks at Halloween and other holidays in our community. In a column last year, following the Halloween night youth fireworks fight at Dennison Park in Tsawwassen, I called for the City of Delta to look at a total ban on fireworks in the community. Now, I want to see a full ban in every municipality across the Lower Mainland that doesn’t already have a ban in place and that includes Delta. Delta Mayor George Harvie is chair of the Metro Vancouver board and has the power to get this conversation started. We need to toughen up the city bylaws that give bylaw officers and police more power to place fines on those setting off fireworks irresponsibly. This time it was a poor animal who suffered an untimely fate. What happens next time if someone else – a young person perhaps – is seriously injured. Enough is enough Delta. It’s time to get tough on fireworks.

but do not agree with it. For instance, a recent letter writer suggesting that Tsawwassen would be “destroyed” by a development at the town centre is way over the top. Another writer lamented the loss of Tsawwassen’s identity if redevelopment occurred at the TTC. What identity? It is problematic to me if people associate Tsawwassen’s identity with a 1960s strip mall. Development detractors are aggressively playing the infrastructure card and although there is some merit here, there are many cracks in this argument. On the school front for instance, the Delta School District recently announced that there is system wide classroom capacity to accommodate the expected number of students for the foreseeable future. I hope that the developer and the city can get this done for the betterment of Tsawwassen.

Doesn’t want Metrotown here Editor: Re: Plan for Tsawwassen Town Centre (Optimist, letters, Dec. 14) I agree with Ivor Hewitt in his recent letter … I am pretty sure that a strong majority of our population does not want 17- to 21-storey buildings
in the centre of town. I am in favour of modernizing the town centre, including with underground parking. Above ground, we should have something that is consistent with the rest of South Delta: low buildings (perhaps
three storeys), not something that blocks the view and changes the entire surrounding infrastructure. I don’t think we should consider anything like a Metrotown in Tsawwassen. S. Corber
More density, more problems Editor: Re: Densification in Delta In both North and South Delta, there has been much debate about the province’s new density targets and the viability and desirability of high-rise condo towers in our neighbourhoods. While the debate in Tsawwassen is over towers in the 20-storey range, in North Delta it is over towers in the 30-storey range. In North Delta, we have been, with little success so far, questioning how many 30-storey condominiums we need along the already congested Scott Road corridor from 96th Avenue to 72nd Avenue. The latest development to be approved is a 29-storey tower at Scott and 93A. The current proposal before city council is for two additional 32-storey towers, along with 10-storey, ninestory and five-storey mid-rises to be built beside the existing 37-storey Delta
Rise on the Delta Shoppers Mall site at 80th Avenue and Scott. The project includes more than 1,500 underground parking stalls. Even with the new Scott Road RapidBus moving 30,000 passengers each weekday along the busiest bus corridor south of the Fraser, North Delta cannot accommodate the tens of thousands of commuters driving through our community to access Highways 99, 17, 91 and the Alex Fraser Bridge. Traffic gridlock is now a fact of life in North Delta. And it appears it will get even worse. Nevertheless, it seems that the mayor and the majority of city council have decided that, regardless of objections from residents, regardless of traffic congestion and regardless of the lack of infrastructure to support them, these high-density projects will go ahead as proposed. Richard Hoover
Gen Z will need all the help Editor: I agree with Larry Colero in his recent letter to the editor that EVs don’t make much of a dent with climate change and that less vehicles is more impactful. Besides fast food, restaurants, inperson retail, trades, construction, and frontline health care, most employers can offer work-from-home options. Most stores eventually will be solely pick-up or delivery, like Amazon. Similarly, the global Plant-Based Treaty and experimental Vegan January are climate-change eradicators as well. Animal agriculture is most-definitely a factor in climate change. After the Abbotsford (hog farm)
Excelsior 4 made the news, yet again, last month, I’ve decided to stop consuming the few animal and tested-onanimals personal products that I do. When this story made the news in the past, I started trying tofu and enjoyed it. I never watched footage or read descriptions when this previously made the news, but did this time. Without seeing exactly what animals experience, I would not have the self-restraint to change my consumer habits. Although I’m 15 years older than Gen Z, they are going to need all the help they can get to reverse this. Lea Bianchin

The Delta Chamber of Commerce recently presented a $3,000 donation to the Delta Community Foundation. Delta Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Jill McKnight, presented this cheque to Delta Community Foundation Director, Carlene Lewall. The donation was raised from the Business Excellence Awards in November.

A new Tsawwassen roadway will be named after B.C.’s official bird. Council recently approved a recommendation that a cul-de-sac that is proposed for a new residential development be named Steller’s Jay Place. The road would be located north of 12th Avenue, west of 52nd Street, south of WinskiII Drive, east of Cliff Drive, Cliff Drive Elementary School and Brandrith Park. In 1987, the Steller’s Jay was voted the most
popular bird in B.C. and became the province’s official bird. It has vibrant blue and black colours and is described as lively, smart and cheeky, a staff report notes, adding it can be found in Delta and throughout the province. Existing names in the Stahaken-Brandrith Park area include Skana, Belair, Camara, Kadota, Walalee, Stahaken, Ehkolie, Pacific, Bayview, Cliff, Upland, Bayview, Gale, Chahalis, and Winskill. Council, following a recent public hearing, gave third reading for an application that will see
three, single-family lots, split into 10 lots. Located at 5121, 5135 and 5149 12th Ave., each lot will contain a new, single-detached residential dwelling, with a basement and a secondary suite. The development includes a new public road, but concerns were raised at a public hearing in 2022 that the public road would connect directly with Winskill Drive. Following that earlier hearing, staff worked with the applicant to amend the plan to ensure the roadways would not connect.

Delta public hearings to become more rare SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Delta council will no longer even have the option of holding a public hearing for development applications that comply with Official Community Plans. While council for the past year has already been exercising its option not to hold hearings for applications that comply with the OCP, the city will be prohibited from having them under new legislation. A recent staff report to Metro Vancouver’s mayor’s committee outlined a number of areas of concern, or that need further clarification, when it comes to potential implications of the housing legislation introduced by the provincial government,
Bills 44, 46, and 47. The province aims to stimulate the infill and intensification of housing in single-detached neighbourhoods and transitoriented areas. The three bills will result in significant and historic changes to the planning framework for B.C., while the implementation will impact OCP policies and zoning bylaw regulations, corresponding planning approval processes, as well as development cost charge bylaws and community amenity contribution and density bonusing programs, the report explains. Noting the changes will involve the provincial government more significantly in planning matters that have traditionally been the jurisdiction of
local governments, the report adds the province will require that housing needs assessments be updated using a standard method, to be set out in the forthcoming regulations, for a more consistent, evidence-based understanding of local housing needs across the province. By Jan. 1, 2025, all local governments will need to complete an interim housing needs report and must now estimate housing needs for 20 years, rather than five years as previously required. The needs identified in the reports will become the basis for reviewing and updating each municipality’s OCP and zoning bylaws by Dec. 31, 2025, and municipalities will need to update OCPs every five years to reflect
the most recent housing needs reports. Municipalities must align their zoning bylaws with the OCP and housing needs reports by prezoning for the 20-year total amount of housing units identified to meet housing needs, while the legislation also prohibits public hearings for proposed zoning bylaws for residential developments that are consistent with OCPs. Meanwhile, municipalities are also required to have updated OCPs, by June 30, 2024, to permit small-scale, multi-unit housing on all lots currently zoned for detached single-family or duplex use. The province has indicated that three units will be permitted on lots smaller than 280 square
SANDOR GYARMATI PHOTO
The site on Ladner Trunk Road at 53rd Street has already been cleared for a 211-unit residential development, which was approved last September following a public hearing. Upcoming OCP changes could result in even fewer such developments requiring a hearing, with the option to even hold one off the table. metres, four units will be permitted on larger lots, and six units will be permitted on lots within a prescribed distance from frequent transit. The Metro report also notes that the province appears to be open to continue working with local governments to make refinements and adjustments to regulations, timelines and policy manuals to ensure
legislation can effectively be implemented at the local and regional government levels. In November 2021, Delta council approved a Housing Action Plan that set eight strategies, each with short- to long-term actions over five years, to address needs identified through Delta’s Housing Needs Assessment, which was completed the year prior.

More help sought at Delta KidSport to keep kids playing
In 2022, KidSport chapters around B.C. paid out more than $1.7 million in sports fees for 5,377 kids PHIL MELNYCHUK
pmelnychuk@delta-optimist.com
If it costs more to put food on the table or a roof over your head, paying pricey fees to enrol in minor hockey or gymnastics can be dispensable. But sport can play a role in helping kids grow up. “We know participation in sport is good for a child’s physical health, but it can also have benefits for their mental health, and provides important opportunities for kids to build friendships, gain confidence and create positive community connections that help fuel their potential,” Rob Newman, CEO of SportBC said in a release. Sport BC is the parent
organization of KidSport BC, which helps pay sports registration fees for families that are being squeezed financially. This year, KidSport is predicting a 25 percent increase in the number of sports fee applications approved, compared to last year. Locally, KidSport Delta chair Carlene Lewall says that 2023 was a busy year as well with about 20 more applications than the previous highest year of 2019, when 202 kids were helped. “We will have exceeded the … largest year that we’ve ever had in giving out funding,” Lewall said. She estimates that $75,000 has been given out so far this year. That

and if approved, KidSport pays the fees directly to sports organizations. Lewall said that the
feedback she’s received from families is the state of the economy is behind the increase in applications in Delta. “The notes I get, the thanks yous we get … ‘it’s really tough and we really appreciate this,’ ” she said. KidSport Delta tries to raise about $100,000 annually to help kids play a variety of sports. People can help out by joining in the Give the Gift of Sport campaign, which wraps up Jan. 8. A major fundraiser is set for April 27 when KidSport Delta holds a casino night at Tsawwassen Springs. In 2022, KidSport chapters around B.C. paid out more than $1.7 million in sports fees for 5,377 kids.

Community Become the best version of ourselves Does anybody like New Year’s resolutions? I normally don’t make them because I know how they work - in one ear and out the other. There is something healthy about striving to be better though. Peter essentially said that in one of his letters to the churches in the first century. “…make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.” 2 Peter 1:5–7 (NIV) Instead of making resolutions each new year
Minister’s Minute JEFF GERMO

and then disappointing myself on Jan. 2, I strive to live out daily what Peter said. I don’t get it right all the time. Far from it. I must remind myself often to “make every effort to add” these things to my character, as I cooperate with Jesus. The goal is to grow in my
capacity to love. It’s not natural for me. Like most human beings, I tend to view the world through the lens of my life, meaning I naturally see myself as the main character in, not only my story, but yours as well. That’s a recipe for bad relationships. That’s why I need to “make every effort.” It doesn’t come naturally for any of us. Let’s remind ourselves each day, not just New Year’s Day, to make every effort to cooperate with God to become the best version of ourselves, one who loves as Jesus loved. He gave himself to us completely so we could experience his hope, peace, joy, and love in relationship with him and with each other.

A physically active lifestyle has been linked to a host of health benefits, including a reduced risk for various chronic diseases and a longer, healthier life. Moving more and sitting less benefits people regardless of their age, sex, race, ethnicity, or even current fitness levels. Whether they’re adapting to a more physically active lifestyle, already physically active or somewhere in between, individuals can benefit from recognizing the latest physical activity guidelines: Adults Substantial health benefits can be gained when adults do between 150 and 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week or between 75 and 150 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity each week. Aerobic activity, which can include walking, running, cycling, and hiking, among other activities, should be spread out over the course of the week. In addition to aerobic activity, the adults should do muscle-strengthening
activities of moderate or greater intensity on two or more days per week. Older adults Older adults should adhere to the same guidelines as younger adults but take some additional steps as well. Older adults are urged to incorporate multicomponent physical activity that includes balance training into their fitness regimens. Older adults should determine their level of effort for physical activity relative to their fitness level. It’s also recommended that older adults with chronic conditions discuss their ability to engage safely in regular physical activity with their physicians. Vigorous- and even moderate-intensity exercise may not be possible for some older adults with existing conditions. Routine physical activity can help adults and older adults live longer, healthier lives. Adults of all ages are urged to speak with their physicians about safe ways to become more physically active. -Metro Creative

Health & Fitness
Moderate intensity activities that can improve overall health
Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. Most adults need 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each week, but what constitutes moderate intensity physical activity? Moderate intensity physical activity gets the heart pumping, but only around one in five adults and teens get enough exercise to maintain good health. It may be because people are having difficulty figuring out what constitutes moderate intensity activity. Here is a more detailed explanation of the types of activities considered moderate intensity.
METRO CREATIVE PHOTO
Here is a more detailed explanation of the types of activities considered moderate intensity.
*Walking very briskly *Heavy cleaning, like washing windows, vacuuming, and mopping *Mowing the lawn with a power mower *Bicycling with light effort
*Playing recreational badminton *Playing doubles tennis *Slow dancing *Shooting a basketball *Water aerobics *Playing volleyball *Heavy gardening *Painting and decorating. Anything that doesn’t increase heart rate and breathing speed will not count as moderate-intensity activity towards the recommended amount of activity. However, any exercise is better than no exercise at all. As long as an activity breaks up long periods of sitting still, doctors say it is still beneficial. -Metro Creative

Pacers get an ‘elite’ start to basketball season
The Delta Pacers welcomed head coach Kyle Julius from the Vancouver Bandits in back-to-back basketball training sessions for coaches and players recently. The coaching clinic was part of an opportunity extended by the Canadian Elite Basketball League team to assist with year-round development of high school basketball programs in the region. The training sessions, which included strategies, practice drills, and team-building exercises, were well attended by coaches and players at each of the high school levels and the feedback provided to Delta Pacers’
athletic director Kayla Jow, was overwhelmingly positive. “Pacer Athletics really enjoyed having coach Julius put on the training sessions. It was such a special experience for our athletes and coaches to work with a professional basketball coach,” said Jow. “Kyle Julius is known as Canada’s most experienced and talented basketball mind, and the training tips and knowledge he shared will go towards igniting our basketball teams to have a successful season.” The community of Delta and Delta Secondary have had a long-standing history of support for its basketball programs, the outcome
of which have led to many a victory for coaches, players, and directors alike. It is something that brings Pacer Basketball coach and alum, Grace Skovgaard, much pride. “So many people have come together, decade after decade, to keep basketball thriving at DSS,” said Skovgaard. “It takes many volunteers, fundraisers, and parent drivers, year after year, to make the sport available for kids and to make the practices, matches, and tournaments happen. To see the amount of love that pours in for this game is amazing.” Supporting basketball in Delta can easily be done.

Ice Hawks sit in second after solid first half of season KATIE LAWRENCE-BALLOCH
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Three-quarters of the way through the 2023/24 PJHL season, the Delta Ice Hawks are sitting solidly in second place in the Tom Shaw Conference. Delta started the season with a home winning streak of 11 games and have only lost five games in regulation to date, with a 28-5-0-2 record through 35 games. Twelve players from last year’s championship team returned to the Hawks this
season, setting the team up with a strong leadership group. One of the veterans, Carson Merriman, jumped out to a quick start, tallying 21 points in his first nine games. He is now the current Ice Hawks assists leader and is eying the all-time points leader spot. Head coach and general manager Steve Robinson called Merriman the team’s “most consistent top performer” until his recent injury that kept him out for six games at the end of December. He
added Danylo Bereza has been “a real standout and early favourite for most improved.” Injuries have been a big storyline for the Ice Hawks, with 17 affiliate players having put on the blue and gold to fill out the roster. Robinson said their play has been a “silver lining” to the year so far. Delta was also missing their captain Yuji Akimoto until the first week of December, due to paperwork and visa approvals to make him eligible to play. Fellow defenceman and assis-
tant captain Tye Hemenway helped lead the way on the blue line. “Hemenway stepped up during Akimoto’s absence and jumped into a top-pair role, performing at a high level defensively and playing at almost a point-per-game pace,” said Robinson. Robinson said the league bump up to Junior A Tier 2 status hasn’t affected the Hawks’ day-to-day at this point, but the team is “taking small steps in preparation for the move to Junior A Tier 1 within the next

one to two seasons,” including working closely with the City of Delta on how to best navigate the change. He added that he is happy with how the team has done so far and is looking forward to this final stretch of the season. “Overall, the results have been mainly positive, with some uneven play and lack of consistency,” he said. “We are hoping to start the new year re-focused on getting healthy and ready for another playoff run to defend our crown as league champions.”

REMEMBRANCES OBITUARIES
RASMUSSEN, Walter December 16, 2023
BOWER, John G. John G. Bower passed away on December 21, 2023 with the love of his life, his wife Janis, at his side. Throughout his last day, his family was on hand to express their love and gratitude, share some laughter and tears, and say goodbye. John was a wonderful and devoted husband, father, and grandfather as well as a good friend to many. His kind, patient, and hardworking nature benefitted family, friends, neighbours and business associates throughout his 77 years. John was born in Trail, BC in 1946 where he lived on Daniel Street with his older sister Julie and their parents Bill and Cleada. He was very proud of his hometown and the lifelong friends he made growing up (he seemed to know everyone). John always said they were lucky to have grown up in Trail and went back often for dinners at the Colander, and taking the kids and grandkids for drives around town to reminisce and tell stories. John was immensely proud of the “Bower Bunch” that came to be when he and Janis married in 1986. They reconnected as friends at a high school reunion in Trail in 1984, each with their own kids in tow. Later, they would connect again and fall in love. The two brought their families together, built a house in Richmond, and started working together, eventually forming their own strata management business, Bower Property Management. Janis and John made every day count, filled with partnership in work and parenting, a deep connection to each other, and a great love. John cherished time with all his kids and was a proud father and step-father to Lisa and Jason Bower as well as Jamie, Jeff, and Rich Overgaard. He enthusiastically supported his kids in all their endeavors, whether it was the arts, sports, school, or career paths. He also loved his daughters and sons-in-law: Hollie, Tjammie, Aiden, and Casey - and was so very proud of their marriages and the loving “Modern Family” they had all become. His five grandchildren - Kyler, Nolan, Jack, Maddie, and Oliver - all enjoyed time with “Gramps” and he loved them all deeply. From the Granny and Gramps daycare as young kids to an active supporter of their sports, academic, and performance interests, John was always willing to help and was very generous with his time. For many years, John was a dedicated volunteer with minor hockey and baseball in Richmond and Ladner. John was an avid golfer, loved music and trivia, enjoyed gardening and being outdoors, spending time exercising with friends, and walking to Boundary Bay. He was also a fixer, grabbing his tools whenever an odd job needed to be done, especially around the beloved family lakehouse on Kootenay Lake. He will be deeply missed. If you choose to do so, donations can be made to the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation or the BC Cancer Foundation in John Bower’s honour. His Celebration of Life will be at the Tsawwassen Springs golf course on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at 1:00 p.m.
JOHNSON, Glen Henry May 21, 1934 to December 27, 2023 It is with great sadness we announce the passing Glen Henry Johnson, beloved husband, Dad and Papa. Predeceased by parents Hank and Florence as well as sisters Sheila, Juanita and brother Morley. Survived by wife Frieda, children Cheryl, Gord (Michelle), Suzette (Dave), grandchildren Jaimee, Kellie, Montana, Nevada and Nash. A proud member of the RCMP for 27 years, retiring as Sargeant, moving on to Investigator for Criminal Injury Compensation. A Coach and mentor to so many, coaching all 3 children and their numerous sports teams over the years. Glen was instrumental in bringing Hawthorne Park to fruition as a dedicated softball park and served for many years with Softball BC. Always there with an ear and a confidant to anyone who wanted or needed his counsel. Always up for a good laugh and would be the first to crack a joke or recite the words to his favorite song “The long Black Veil” and a story to go with it. A lifelong Calgary sports fan of both the Stampeders and the Flames. Travelling with Frieda to Arizona and Palm Springs for winter getaways as he loved a good road trip. Papa as he was known by the grandchildren, following him around the yard in his garden, picking carrots, peas and beans. Introducing them to his favorite true crime shows that most still watch today.
It is with sadness that we announce the death of Walter Rasmussen on December 16th at the age of 88 years. He leaves behind his wife, Mary−Rose; three children, Helene (Abderrahmane), Sean (Amalia) and Craig (Sheila); seven treasured grandchildren, Benjamin, Adam, Sebastian, Simon, Brendan, Dylan and Sarah; one brother and two sisters. Walter was born to a family of ten children on a farm in Alberta, attending a one−room school for his early years. He later attended the University of Alberta, studying engineering before switching to his real love, education, at UBC. He taught for many years in Delta, spent one year on a teacher exchange in Scotland, and was devoted to his students. Walter loved politics and was always up for a debate! He was a man of strong convictions. His commitment to environmental and social justice causes, drew him to engage deeply from the ecology club he pioneered with students to the local political and environmental movements he advocated for and supported. A lifelong learner, he had a curious mind and an amazing memory. As a boy, he could be found lost in a book at the wheel of the tractor, the crops to be harvested long forgotten. The family will always remember his stories of the characters and events of his early life. Following retirement, he and Mary− Rose shared travels in Europe, the U.S. and South Korea. Curling was his favorite sport. In his last years, he spent time researching his ancestry in Denmark and Norway. Many thanks to the staff at the Irene Thomson Hospice, to Bruce, a very thoughtful volunteer at the facility, and to Dr. Stuart Noble at the Tsawwassen Clinic for his care and friendship through the years.

LEONARD, Joan Rosemary
MARTIN, Paula Gaye
It is with great sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Joan Rosemary Leonard. Joan passed peacefully on November 28th, surrounded by her loved ones.
Paula Gaye Martin, 67, of Delta, BC, passed away on Friday December 29th, 2023, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family and messages of love until the end.
September 2, 1942 - November 28, 2023
Born in England, Joan was the youngest of four siblings. In 1948, her family immigrated to Halifax, Canada, briefly stopping in Toronto, Ontario. There, her mother sadly passed away, and her older brothers stayed. Joan, along with her father and older sister, eventually made her way to Ladner, BC. Here they settled, and Ladner is where Joan lived and loved for the remainder of her years.
Joan is survived by her husband, Mel; her children, Robert (Toni) and Carol; her granddaughter, Kyla (Dustin), and her great-grand children, Colten and Emma. Joan’s greatest love was her family, especially her great-grandchildren. From baking to tea dates, to making a snow man during the first snowfall of the year, she was a proud and devoted Grandma. Joan was very young when her mother passed away. She often shared how she remembered that her mom loved gardening and that she took great comfort in the thought of her mom gardening in heaven. Later, after one of her brothers passed, she took greater comfort in the thought of the two of them gardening side by side. Now, we will do the same. We will take comfort in the thought that Grandma is gardening in Heaven alongside her mother and brother.
RICHARDSON, Stanley Davis Stanley Davis Richardson was born September 8, 1938 in Vancouver, BC and peacefully passed away at age 85 on December 20, 2023. He is lovingly survived by his wife Rose of 63 years, son Rick with wife Jennifer and grandson Tanner, daughter Michele, daughter Renee with husband Erwin. Living in Vancouver, in the 1950’s Stan (aka “Red”) was a professional piano player and started up the band The Hi-Fives. While playing in a band at night, Stan also had a love for cars and worked during the day in auto body. He opened his own business of Ladner Auto Body Ltd in 1977. His wish is not to have a funeral. To view more details on Stan’s legacy and more, please visit Delta Funeral Home website www.deltafuneral.ca Delta Funeral Home 604.946.6040
Grandma, your absence is felt in every corner of our lives. We long to hear your voice and see your warm smile. You are loved and missed more than words can describe. What a site your garden will be when we one day reunite. Until that day, rest in peace and know that you are forever loved.
Paula was born on October 28th, 1956, to Paul and Josephine Johnson, and spent most of her life in Richmond, BC. Paula graduated from Richmond High in 1974. She married Danny in 1980 and they had three daughters, Lyndsay, Danica and Stephanie. Paula worked for Salmon’s Transfer for many years before retiring to Ladner to travel, visit, love life and help with her growing bunch of grandchildren. Paula spent her time playing golf, pickleball, table tennis and always made sure to catch Wheel of Fortune with Danny by her side. Paula was always the life of the party. Paula was predeceased by her brothers, Harvey and Grove Johnson. She is survived by her husband Daniel and her three beautiful children and their families: Lyndsay (Tim -- Kaitlyn, Elise & Jillian), Danica (Kevin -- Emersyn & Jack), and Stephanie (Mike). We thank everyone for the support over the past month. A lively celebration in honour of Paula’s legacy will be held in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, go hug your loved ones and consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Irene Thomas Hospice (Delta Hospital Community Health Foundation).

Together, we transform health care. Thanks a million. Support life-saving care at British Columbia’s largest hospital and help our doctors, nurses, staff, health care workers, and all the patients who visit VGH every day. Your Millionaire Lottery tickets support specialized adult health care and research at Vancouver General Hospital, UBC Hospital and GF Strong Rehab Centre. VGH is one of only two accredited adult Level 1 Trauma Centres in BC. VGH, together with UBC Hospital and GF Strong, are the province’s main referral centres for specialist care. Every year, Vancouver Coastal Health serves more than 650,000 residents, as well as visitors and patients from across British Columbia, performs more than 32,000 surgeries and sees over 115,000 emergency room visits.
The simple truth is, if you are seriously ill or injured, our hospitals are your best chance. There are few illnesses or injuries our medical teams cannot treat, no matter how complex or rare.
This is BC’s hospital, and the Millionaire Lottery is truly BC’s hospital lottery.
