Gypsy on the loose in Delta Six-foot ball python reported missing; last seen near Westham Island Bridge IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Delta police are on the hunt for a slippery fugitive. Police announced last weekend that a ball python named Gypsy went missing in a farmer’s field in Ladner on June 30. “Unfortunately, officers do not have an exact location where the snake was last seen (by its owner) — just that it was in a farmer’s field in Ladner,” said police department public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf.
Leykauf said a ball python was spotted by a reliable source at the Westham Island Bridge on July 3, but there have been no further sightings reported. Officers were initially in contact with the owner of the snake on June 20 when a man was reported sleeping outside of Walmart in Tsawwassen Commons with a large snake. Upon police request, the man and snake relocated to a nearby minivan. The man was noted to be cooperative and polite.

Gypsy was last seen on July 3 near the Westham Island Bridge. “The snake is six feet long, eight inches in diameter and a dark caramel colour,” said Leykauf. “Ball
pythons are not venomous, and apparently are a popular choice for those wanting a pet snake, as
they are known to have more of a docile temperament.” This type of snake is known to curl up in a ball when stressed or frightened. In the wild their diet is primarily small mammals such as rats, mice and birds. Police do not know the circumstances of how the snake came to be in a Ladner farmer’s field. While Gypsy remains on the loose, Leykauf said in an odd coincidence, a ball python was captured in Maple Ridge last Saturday.
District spared, but Delta on hook for health tax SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The Delta School District is getting relief from the new employer health tax, but the City of Delta is not so fortunate. Finance Minister Carole James announced last week that the province would cover the cost for school districts, health authorities, universities and many public service providers but city halls must still pay the new tax. The province announced earlier this year the elimination of Medical Services Plan premiums by 2020, to be replaced by the employer health tax. The change will be phased in next year with employers paying a reduced portion of MSP premiums but also the full employer health tax. The new tax requires employers with payrolls over $500,000 a year to

The tax goes up in increments with large employers hit the hardest as they will pay a 1.95 per cent tax on payrolls over $1.5 million. According to the Delta’s finance department, the
new tax combined with still having to pay half MSP premiums will result in an additional $1.4 million next year. When MSP premiums are gone the following year, it would still work out to an additional annual cost of about
$850,000. That equates to an increase of just under one per cent if the city tried to recoup that cost through property taxes. The Delta School District could have been on the hook for an additional $685,000 next year
due to a combination of MSP premiums and the new tax. “Although we do not have details of what this additional funding will look like as far as specific dollar amounts for Delta School District, we are pleased to see that the challenges of moving from MSP to EHT for public sector organizations, like school districts, has been recognized,” said Delta school board chair Laura Dixon. The province says the elimination of MSP premiums and introduction of the employer health tax will result in a net tax decrease of approximately $800 million per year for British Columbians. Families will save as much as $1,800, and individuals will save up to $900 each year, the government says. Businesses, however, have complained bitterly about the new tax.

Fun, unity, respect and cultural diversity are what the Pulling Together Canoe Journey is all about. Now in its 14th year, paddlers from across B.C. made their way to the Tsawwassen First Nation Sunday on day six of their nine-day paddle from Victoria to Vancouver. Participants were set to paddle from the TFN to Wellington Point Park on Monday, but high winds meant the canoes had to be portaged. The group then left in the early afternoon for its next stop — Steveston. The journey wrapped up in Vancouver yesterday. Linda Blake, president of the Pulling Together Canoe Society, said this year’s journey went very well. “We have had up to 17 canoes on this journey. There will be at least 13 in the water today here in South Delta,” Blake said Monday. “It all depends on the fatigue levels of our canoes. We have about 250

Slates shaping up in race for school board seats SANDOR GYARMATI

New-look slates are already lining up for seats on the Delta school board. Last week, incumbent trustee Bruce Reid announced he’ll be running once again on the Kids Matter ticket, this time with newcomers Randy Anderson-Fennell and Victor Espinoza. “As a trustee for the past four years, I’ve seen our district celebrate triumphs and overcome many challenges,” said Reid, a Tsawwassen resident. “But there is still so much to do in order to ensure the success of all learners — my work is not yet done.” Reid lists the underfunding of education and not enough resources for special needs students as particular barriers that need addressing. Both Reid and Espinoza are teachers by profession. Reid, a former pastor, is retiring from the Richmond School District this year. Espinoza, a 20-year public school teacher, currently works

Aspiring actress is bound for Big Apple SDSS grad Sabrina Valana to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York DAVE WILLIS

Tsawwassen’s Sabrina Valana is headed to the Big Apple to pursue her acting career. The 2018 South Delta Secondary graduate is set to begin her studies at American Academy of Dramatic Arts’ New York campus in September. The 17-year-old says she’s let others know since the start of Grade 8 that New York is where she’d like to end up. “I told everyone that. All my teachers knew that’s where I wanted to be,” she says. She’ll be taking a twoyear conservatory program. The admissions process included an “intense” audition. Valana, who received a $5,000 meritbased scholarship to go towards her studies, says she performed a contemporary monologue and a Shakespearean monologue. It took about two months to prepare for the audition, she recalls. “There’s a full process
Sabrina Valana says she’s had a desire to go to New York since she was in Grade 8. that goes into playing a scene, playing a character,” says Valana, who selected her Shakespearean monologue from Romeo and Juliet. Valana says when she found out her late acting coach Elizabeth Kemp was an alumni of the academy, it “confirmed that’s where I wanted to go.”

seems incredible to me.” Valana was a student of the Delta Film Acting Academy in Grade 8 and 9. She says the experience made her stronger and particularly helped with the skills she needed for auditions. Delta Film Academy coordinator and South Delta drama teacher Jennifer Harbott says she wishes Valana the best of luck. “I am very proud of Sabrina’s ambition and hard work and it has been my pleasure to watch her growth as an actress,” Harbott says. The American Academy of Dramatic Arts is over 130 years old and became widely known as the Cradle to the Stars during the 20th century, according to its website. Its New York campus is located in Midtown Manhattan while the school opened a Los Angeles campus in the mid-1970s. Academy alumni include Robert Redford, Danny DeVito, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Paul Rudd.

South Delta valedictorian is on a mission Morgan Wolsey to spend the next two years overseas performing community service IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Morgan Wolsey will soon be on a mission — a mission to serve his church and other people in a distant land. The South Delta Secondary valedictorian, who graduated last week, is an outstanding athlete and student, winning numerous scholastic awards as well as Male Sportsperson of the Year as an integral part of the football, rugby and basketball teams. With a resume as impressive as that, he could have had a pick of universities, but as his friends head off to postsecondary, Wolsey leaves in August, deferring university, scholarships and sports to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He will spend two years on the islands of Madagascar, La Reunion and Mauritius where he will immerse himself in the communities and dedicate his time to com-
munity service. “I always knew I wanted to do this regardless of what was going to happen the rest of my life, and so when it came to the point when I was 16 when I had to commit to it, I’m totally loving the fact that I committed to this,” said Wolsey, whose dad Travis also served in a similar mission when he was younger. “The decision has already had a huge impact on my life in school and in sports.” Wolsey leaves Aug. 9 for six weeks of training. “The training will help me figure out what I will be doing, but a big part of the mission is to preach the gospel and teach people that don’t really know about Jesus Christ and Christianity,” he said. “I don’t really know how to prepare for this, but I’m just doing the best I can to get ready of these two years of giving my life up to God essentially. “I think the experience will change a lot of my life, but I think as well I have the goal of appreciating a
culture and a love of the people, embrace the language and get everything I can out of it.” He said his friends are fascinated that he’s taking this life-changing step. “They all want to go. They think it is really something special,” he said. “I have been talking about this for so many years, my friends are just really happy for me that I’m now actually going instead of talking about it.” For his valedictory speech, Wolsey spoke about change and how high school prepared this year’s grads for the rest of their lives. The speech spoke volumes of the change he will soon encounter. SUBMITTED PHOTO

t shouldn’t really be necessary, but then again these are strange times we live in. Mayoral candidate Sylvia Bishop unveiled a Code of Ethical Conduct during a press conference last week, pledging that all those affiliated with her Team Delta slate would conduct themselves with integrity during the lead up to this fall’s civic election. The fact a politician has to make such a promise speaks to where we’re at as a society today, but perhaps the most interesting aspect of the nine-point code she unveiled is that it’s not just for those running for office but extends to anyone associated with the slate. That’s because nastiness and name calling typically doesn’t go on between candidates, who are generally respectful of one another during elections contested here in Delta, but it can flourish in the dark underbelly of the campaign where trolls lurk, facts are often Trumpesque and language isn’t for the faint of heart. For as long as there have been elections, there have been supporters who have done whatever they can to help their candidates of choice, even if it meant crossing a line. The 21st century equivalent of knocking over an opponent’s lawn sign is to spew venom about them digitally, a practice that’s been made exceedingly easy with social media. It’s hard to determine who is railing on their own and who might be doing so at the behest of a candidate who doesn’t want to get their hands dirty, but mean-spirited behaviour has certainly become pervasive as public discourse reaches new lows. During that press conference last week, Bishop said she didn’t foresee this year’s campaign getting nasty, but she’s heard from many voters who are fed up, and turned off, by the shenanigans that go on in politics these days. I’m not sure a code of conduct is going to alter that perception to any great degree, but at least it’s a step in the right direction. The level of civility seems to be declining with every passing day as it’s become far too acceptable to add unhealthy doses of scorn, sarcasm and outright contempt into what should otherwise be an exchange of opinions and ideas. Any effort to raise the dialogue above where it now depressingly finds itself should be embraced by all involved.
Attorney general doesn’t offer any help to stop Delta casino
A
fter outlining my opposition to the casino proposal that received conditional approval from Delta council in May, I reported that I had written the attorney general of B.C. requesting his involvement to have a casino question put on the fall ballot so everyone in South Delta could express their opinion democratically. Well, this week I received an e-mail response from the attorney general and rather than offering any assistance, it said the following: “A host local government must not approve a facility location unless it satisfies BCLC that adequate community input has been sought and considered. B.C.’s gaming control regulations define adequate community input to include comments, information and representation received from persons who reside in the community. The host local government must also give public notice within the community about the proposal, including details of the proposal, and provide opportunity for residents’ feedback at one or more public hearings or a referendum of residents.” Several people have spoken to me about the fact the mayor and three councillors, along with a small number of people at the public hearing, have moved the casino along, and many of those speaking in support were not South Delta residents or they had
Community Comment GREG HOOVER
a monetary interest in the casino being built. I don’t believe that “adequate community input has been sought and considered,” but if the attorney general won’t assist us to have the question put on the fall ballot, then what can we do? I should mention that other people contacted the attorney general regarding the casino and we all got the exact same e-mail response. Here I thought I was special. Since I last wrote Peter German has submitted an extensive report to the attorney general that sheds even more light on the underside of casinos, including: 1. “The RCMP found there was a collective system failure that grew over time and outstripped the ability of existing legislation, processes and structures to manage it.” 2. “Money laundering in casinos was linked to the opioid crisis.”
3. The report indicates money laundering has been going on since 2002 at least. 4. Besides money laundering, there have been all sorts of issues related to organized crime. In all I’ve read, I can’t see one good reason for this casino to be built, except for some people to make money. I believe the social costs to South Delta far outweigh any revenue Delta will collect. If the casino is going to hire 700 people, every restaurant in South Delta will find it even more difficult to hire staff. Tsawwassen Mills already has to bus in workers from other districts. Some folks have asked about a petition to see how many South Delta residents are against this project, so to see if that would be a worthwhile exercise we need some feedback from you and your neighbours. If you would like to see a petition collected opposing the casino, please send me an e-mail with the subject line: “Yes to a petition opposing the casino.” • No attachments please. • I do not want to debate the issue. • Depending on the response, there is a group that will organize it. Let me know at ghoover@dccnet.com. Greg Hoover is a project manager in industrial and commercial construction who has lived with Christina in Tsawwassen for 25 years.

Minority already calling the shots and it will get worse
Editor: Re: Voters have an opportunity to modernize our democracy, Community Comment, July 5 ML Burke laments a Conservative government being elected in Ontario, but had they had proportional representation, there would be a LiberalNDP coalition government and Ontario would be well on its way to bankruptcy with absolutely no way of stopping it as it would be impossible for the Conservatives to win an election under a PR system. Under a PR system, we would be making that situation permanent, which is just what the NPD and the
Greens want in B.C. She talks of cooperation. Let’s deal in a little reality for a change. The left wing parties cooperate with other left wing parties and right wing parties cooperate with other right wing parties. There is no cooperation across left wing and right wing lines and there never will be. Stating the first past the post system is bad because government is formed with less than 50 per cent of the vote is simply silly. Divide 100 by three or more and what do you get? Simple math is going to tell you that is what will happen when you have more than two parties running in an election.
I’ve heard the first past the post system called a “tyranny of the majority” and it may well be, but why would we swap that for a “tyranny of the minority?” We are already seeing that now under first past the post, never mind PR, as the Greens, who got about 16 per cent of the vote in the last election, are now dictating government policy on the Trans Mountain pipeline even though a majority of British Columbians want to see it go ahead. What the majority wants is simply ignored by this government and it will be far worse under a PR system. Curtis MacDonald

Still in love with the printer’s ink
Editor: In 1974-1975 I was the editor of the Optimist’s north end alt-news known as the Surrey-Delta Messenger, W.W. Hastings, publisher. Shortly after I took over reporting on Mayor Tom Goode et al, the paper was purchased by the Sterling Newspaper group owned by Conrad Black, David Radler and Peter White. Radler was the active partner in the enterprise. I engaged Radler one day about the “bright future” of our worthy weekly effort that my journalist friends jokingly referred to as The
Mess. He said to me, “Don’t be too possessive about this paper, Baird. By the year 2000 no one will be reading news in newspapers — we’ll all be reading off of computer screens instead.” Keep in mind this was 1974. Not yet 30 and an ex-English/social studies/ drama high school teacher, I had but a vague notion what a computer was. The articles and editorials I wrote I composed on the 1925 cast iron Underwood Hastings had bequeathed me. (Computers? Fact is IBM Selectric typewriters would not make their appearance in Surrey
municipal offices for another two or three more years, let alone computers and word-processing that wouldn’t come on the scene until the late 1980s.) So the fact that Edgar Dunning’s Optimist is still able to produce a paper product — even if but once-a-week — is cheering news. The expression “ink-stained wretch” applies to not only those of us who are journalists but to all who love the printer’s ink that weeps and bleeds onto our hands and into our hearts. Keep calm and report on, Optimist! Wm. Baird Blackstone
Gardener fondly recalls time at Earthwise
Editor: I had the unique opportunity to be part of the creation of Earthwise Community Garden and of the organic South Delta food growing program. Things have changed but the doors are open to the larger community as always. Most of the gardeners, workers and volunteers discovered what it was to be committed to sharing
an organic outdoor space in our West Coast climate. I felt we were demonstrating how valuable fresh food is to us, while enjoying the involvement with others of the same interest. Expert courses, guidance and knowledge was always available. An unexpected reward was a sense of having a shadow of control over the food I eat. The mixing and min-
gling of all age groups interested in the big picture of growing your own food strengthens the sense of community while everyone has the opportunity to work and learn in the outdoors. Now, 11 years later, I remain friends of Earthwise but have moved to another community garden closer to where I live. Abby Armstrong
Delta needs new motto to acknowledge smell
Editor: It is Monday, July 9 as I write and the smell along River Road West in Ladner must be equivalent to standing in the main sewer for Vancouver.
Given that we are now a city, perhaps we need a new motto, “Delta, the smelliest City in Canada,” or how about, “Come to Ladner and smell the Ordure.”
I gather this is a serious problem that has been allowed to pervade for some time without those in power doing anything and that certainly smells. Gavin Wishart

Say hello to Hope Hope is a three year old female bully mix around 35lbs. This little girl LOVES everyone and gets VERY excited when meeting new...well...anything! Hope would love to hook up with a motivated and dedicated owner who will continue her education. Her foster has been working hard teaching and reinforcing calm behavior and Hope has made leaps and bounds. Not very socialized in the beginning, Hope has made a handful of doggie friends since arriving, tho she still has a ways to go in her networking techniques. She is VERY treat motivated which makes working with her quite easy! She is pretty good on leash, crate trained and house broken. Hope is considered medium to higher energy, and needs a good amount of mental and physical stimulation a day. As with all our dogs, she is spayed and up to date on all shots and vaccines, heartworm tested and microchipped. This little gem is looking for a foster or furever home ASAP, so if you think she would be a good fit for you, please email us at pbandchi@gmail.com

Police called due to suspicious sounds at construction site South Delta Crime Beat
The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for inprogress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:
TSAWWASSEN
• July 2, 1:38 p.m., 800-block of 57th Street: Complainant reported that a stranger attended their residence to see a suite that was posted for rent on Craigslist. The complainant stated they had made a similar add on Kijiji, not Craigslist, for a higher price. The false ad used different pictures from the Kijiji ad, but the same address as the complainant’s residence, resulting in the ad to be flagged on Craigslist. • July 6, 800-block of Deerfield Drive: Complainant reported that sometime overnight,
between July 2 and July 3, an unknown suspect entered their unlocked vehicle parked on the street, stealing an international passport, perfume and pocket change. • July 7, 800-block of Wallace Avenue: Complainant reported they left a vintage Bose stereo and turntable out front of their residence for pick up by the intended purchaser when it was stolen. • July 7, 6th Avenue: Complainant contacted police about suspicious sounds coming from a home under construction. Police attended and found the sound to be coming from a sump pump that was taking in more air than water. The pump was adjusted to no longer make any noise. • July 7, 1:16 p.m., Centennial Parkway: Complainant contacted police to report a vehicle chronically speeding through the neighbourhood, and provided a plate number. Police attended and located the registered owner who had a clean driving record. The registered owner was cautioned and advised of the 30 km/h speed limit in Boundary Bay. • July 8, 11:45 a.m., 5000-block of Walker
Avenue: Complainant reported that sometime overnight an unknown suspect gained entry to their residence through an unlocked side door, and exited by opening the garage door at the front of the residence. The suspects made off with a variety of golf clubs and tools with an approximate value of $2,100. • July 8, 8:24 a.m., 1600block of Spyglass Crescent: Complainant reported that sometime overnight an unknown suspect gained entry to their garage via a garage door opener that was left in the vehicle parked in their driveway. The suspect entered the residence through an unlocked door in the garage, resulting in the keys for the vehicle being obtained and the car being stolen. • July 9, 2600-block of 41B Street: Complainant reported their boat motor and other items had been stolen from their storage unit by entering a secured yard. Total value of stolen goods is approximately $4,260.
LADNER
• July 1, 11:56 p.m., 5600-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant reported they heard a noise coming from the
outside of their residence, and entered the carport to find a bike had been taken. The bike is a black 10-speed women’s mountain bike with custom labelling that is valued at approximately $400. • July 6, 8:30 p.m., 5700block of River Road: While police were conducting a CounterAttack roadblock officers pulled over a driver who had previously been the subject to a three-day immediate roadside prohibition warning. The driver blew in an approved screening device, resulting in a “Warn.” As this was the second warn result, the driver was subject to a seven-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was towed for a seven-day impound. • July 7, 12:29 p.m., 4900-block of 59A Street: Complainant reported that an unknown suspect had broken the back window of the complainant’s truck parked on the street. Entry was not gained to the vehicle and no items were reported stolen. • July 8, 8 p.m., 4700block of Arthur Drive: Complainant reported that an unknown suspect had stolen their helmet and Thunder Road mountain bike, valued at approximately $200.

Delta police are reminding residents in Tsawwassen to remove their valuables after a rash of vehicle break-ins last week. Police say vehicles were
broken into late in the evening on July 2 through to the early morning hours of July 3 in the 100-block of English Bluff Road, 100-block of Tsawwassen Beach Road, 4900- to 5100-block of 1st Avenue, and in the 100- and 200block of 49th Street. There

were also a few reports of thefts from unlocked garages and carports in these areas and in the 5000-block of Wallace Avenue. Stolen items included wallets, passport, laptop, sunglasses and speakers. A Trek Road bike, tool bag, tools and golf clubs were also stolen. In the majority of cases, the vehicles were not locked as police did not see signs of forced entry. “Our officers increased patrols in the area as reports started to come in July 3,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. “Police are also taking further investigative steps as this is a priority issue for us. We fully understand
how property crime can impact residents.” An electronic reader board was also moved into the area to warn residents of the recent thefts. Late last week, volunteers from the Tsawwassen Community Police Station also went door-to-door in the area to provide information and safety tips to residents. ICBC is also contributing steering locks to be distributed to Delta residents who own vehicles older than a 2007 model. The locks will be available while quantities last and will be handed out once the vehicle owner has shown their registration paper at any of the three community police stations.

Drug bust results in stiff sentences for two men
Delta man handed five years, ringleader gets 15 IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Two men have received significant prison sentences in connection to a multi-jurisdictional fentanyl drug bust in 2016. Delta’s Adam Summers received a sentence of five years, while his coaccused, Scott Pipping of Surrey, received 15 years. Pipping was also ordered to pay $35,000 to Mani Ranjbar whose Burnaby apartment was used as a drug lab. Delta police and Burnaby RCMP combined forces in March 2016 as officers discovered a major drug operation where fentanyl was being mixed with other substances to make it look like heroin. Officers seized $1.5 million in cash, multiple firearms, computers and cell phones, as well as fentanyl, 12 kilograms of cocaine, 4.5 kilograms of heroin and $100,000 worth of pills, including OxyContin. “These are significant
sentences and they reflect the scope and impact of this lab,” said Delta police Chief Neil Dubord. “This was a massive lab, and a key part of the drug trade at the time in Metro Vancouver. An entire kitchen in a Burnaby apartment had been converted to process the fentanyl. I’m very proud of the work of our officers in shutting this down, and have no doubt that many lives were saved as a result of this work.” Pipping was understood to be Summers’ boss in the scheme, according to earlier court documents. Ranjbar’s apartment was one of three homes searched in March 2016 in connection with the drug bust. The other two were in Richmond and Surrey. According to a lawsuit launched by Ranjbar, the Burnaby landlord had rented the suite to Stephen Takeshi Tajiri. Ranjbar alleges Tajiri gave the drug dealers access to the suite. Ranjbar said he found out about the clandestine
drug lab three days after police executed their search warrant. Ranjbar is suing Tajiri, Pipping, Summers and an unnamed woman for the destruction of appliances and fixtures in the apartment and for the contamination of the suite with fentanyl and other toxic chemicals. He said the contamination had made the apartment “a serious threat to life” and that he had to pay for multiple inspections to make sure the place was properly decontaminated of toxic drugs. Pipping and Summers face another civil suit from the province’s director of civil forfeiture, who is going after a car owned by Summers and nearly $1.5 million in alleged drug money seized from the Burnaby, Richmond and Surrey residences. None of the allegations made in the lawsuits have been proven in court. — With files from Cornelia Naylor/Burnaby Now

STAY SAFE
STAY OFF THE TRACKS

Kids got a chance to check out the new Ladner Rotary Splash Park last week ahead of the official grand opening this Saturday.
Ladner Rotary Splash Park set to open this Saturday Facility pays tribute to Delta’s farming heritage
About every 3 hours, a person or vehicle is hit by a train. Stay Safe. When you’re near railroad tracks, always obey all posted signs and signals, and follow a few simple rules: Stay off railroad bridges. Most bridges do not have safe walkways for people so if a train is approaching, the only options are to jump or be struck by the train. Never try to walk through a railroad tunnel. There is only about 14 inches of clearance between a passing train and the walls. Stay at least 10 feet away from tracks. Trains are wider than their tracks so always keep a safe distance.
At BNSF Railway, we’re proud to have one of the lowest grade crossing collision rates in the industry. And we’re committed to working with the communities we serve to make grade crossing even safer.
The grand opening of the Ladner Rotary Splash Park is set for this Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The new splash park, which replaces an older one in Ladner’s Memorial Park, honours Delta’s farming community. There are interpretative signs
highlighting 10 aspects of the farming life in Delta, including a tractor, irrigation wheels (round water sprays), plowed rows (rubberized surface), tomatoes (rubberized mounts) and the Fraser River (rubberized surface), along with other special elements

Gymnastics coach receives Special Olympics award
Delta’s Courtney Keith has been recognized by Special Olympics BC. The rhythmic gymnastics coach is the 2018 recipient of the Howard Carter Award, which goes to a coach who provides exceptional training to athletes and ensures they are prepared to beat their personal bests and deliver high-calibre performances. Well known for her positive attitude and an ability to help her athletes reach their full potential, Keith was recognized for going above and beyond when it comes to individualized training. One of her strengths is her communication skills as she takes time and care to take athletes’ individual personalities into account. She always considers their overall well-being, not just their progress in the sport. As a coach with almost 10 years of experience with Special Olympics BC, Keith has helped elevate the Delta rhythmic gymnastics program.

Delta’s Courtney Keith received the 2018 Howard Carter Award from Special Olympics BC. Prior to her arrival, the club had never sent athletes to provincial or national games, but Keith helped two of her athletes make it all the way to the 2014 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Vancouver. She currently has two Team BC athletes preparing for the 2018 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Antigonish, NS. “Courtney represents the values and goals of our organization at all times — respect for others and
their accomplishments, fair play, working hard to meet personal goals, and believing in the power of sport to enrich the lives of our athletes,” said Jodi Cobden, Special Olympics BC – Delta local coordinator. “Her consistently positive attitude translates directly into positive athletes.” Carter was a long-time contributor and friend of Special Olympics BC who recognized the value of coaches. The award is presented in his memory.

Ladner’s Bob McKinnon has a new outlook on life following a heart transplant four years ago. That new outlook resulted in two gold medals at last week’s Canadian Transplant Games held at UBC in Vancouver where McKinnon was first in lawn bowling and 10-pin bowling in the 70-plus age category. Since 2000, the Transplant Games have been a showcase for transplant recipients from across the country to enjoy the competition and camaraderie while celebrating a second chance at life. They are Canada’s largest organ and tissue donation awareness event. “It was a great week – certainly very inspiring to be among all the other competitors,” said McKinnon. This was the second time he’d been at a Transplant Games, but the first time competing as McKinnon and his wife travelled to Toronto in 2016 to watch the event. “This one I decided to enter and I had a great time,” he said. “I joined Ladner Lawn Bowling and took lessons so I could be able to compete. Though more than 90 per cent of Canadians support organ donations, only around 20 per cent have registered their intentions to be organ donors. McKinnon said he is happy to be an advocate. “You are very grateful to the donors’ family. Longing for rumble of a summer storm
Living Matters
BARBARA GUNN
Of late, I’ve been pining for a storm. No, not of the wind or the rain variety. Not of unseasonal hail.
Of late, I’ve been pining for a good old-fashioned barn burner of a summertime electrical storm. The kind that sends dogs skittering under the chesterfield. The kind that rattles folks from the deepest of slumbers. The kind where bolts streak across the sky, and the night crashes and rumbles and booms. The kind that draws you to the window, where you watch in utter awe.
The kind that seized our attention, oh, a couple of years back when we were visiting the Eastern relatives. We were sitting on the cottage’s screened-in porch in the mid-afternoon when the clouds turned from white to black in a matter of minutes. The wind gusted up, sending early autumn leaves dancing across the grass. The rain started slowly, then picked up
power and began to pound so hard we could scarcely hear each other speak. The flashes were epic, and so was the noise. “Do you think we’ll have one?” I asked the husband the other day. “A storm? With thunder and lightning?” I was hopeful. “Maybe,” said the husband. It was late afternoon and we were on the porch
— the non-screened porch — and we’d noticed the day had turned. We noticed that the gusts were starting to shake the trees, and that the clouds were darkening and skidding across the sky. We sat and we waited. The rain arrived. The wind picked up. But that was it. The Eastern relatives, meantime, were no doubt at the cottage, perhaps driven indoors on account
of the weather. The sky would be roaring and the lightning would flash, but they’d probably pay scant attention, and focus on Rummoli instead of the storm. Familiarity will do that. Me? I’m pining for a good old summer storm, the likes of which I rarely see. Give me the sand and the sunshine and all. But I’d love all the noisy stuff too.

Mutans and acid pooped = cavities made 2: TAKE VITAMIN D, A and K2 -studies show a 50% reduction in cavity rate in those with high vitamin D levels (use an oral drop to get in right in your mouth) and the body is able to repair small cavities in the presence of calcium from foods and vitamin D, A and K 3: CROWD IT OUT -find a chewable probiotic with Lactobacillus in it and Lactobacillus bacteria have been shown to block the growth of S. Mutans 4: HARDEN YOUR TEETH - extra fluoride in toothpaste or a mouth wash will give your teeth a harder shell to fight this bug 5: DON’T FORGET TO BRUSH AND FLOSS -this actually removes these critters before they get a chance to eat your teeth! – Editorial provided by Dr. Crista Walker, Serenity Dental.

The summer is here and the barbecue is working overtime to provide feasts for all who gather. These special times can be made up of family and friends. They can even include neighbours who stroll by and are invited to stay awhile. It’s on these occasions that I often think of Jesus and the time he fed the 5,000. What a gift it was that the disciples jumped into action and found what was offered by the people and brought it all to Jesus. It was Jesus who blessed and broke the bread to be shared with the crowd … and all ate and were filled, with 12 baskets remaining of extra food. This is what families do

writes about this feast held on a simple hillside and compares it to the lavish feast of King Herod. She writes, “There’s no guarded palace, just a beautiful open field where all are welcome. There’s no head table; everyone is a guest of honour. There’s no boasting, just thanksgiving. There’s no pompous vowmaking and self-aggrandizement, just simple food, blessed, broken, and shared, and enough for all. Playgrounds get adventurous
Kids can use their imaginations and test boundaries at recreation centres DAVE WILLIS

Delta’s adventure playgrounds are back for the summer. The play spaces, which debuted last year, opened last week and are once again located at the South Delta Recreation Centre in Tsawwassen and the North Delta Recreation Centre. There are tools like hammers and saws for children to build structures, work together and use their imagination, all while learning to assess risk. “The coolest thing we’ve seen is everybody working together. We don’t have a piece of wood and a tool for every child that’s in there,” says recreation program coordinator Kelly Wilson. Parents are encouraged to let their kids explore on their own in the unstructured environment. There is a trained play attendant on-site, notes Wilson. “The role of the play attendant is to be an advocate for play, oversee the basic guidelines, educate children on the difference between a risk and a hazard, and to assist if first aid is required,” Delta’s website explains. “Play attendants are happy to answer any questions about the play space. Their

“It’s a really good way for kids to assess their risk,” Wilson says. The playgrounds proved popular last year, she adds. A staff report to Delta
council describes them as a “tremendous success” with over 3,700 visits last year. The adventure playgrounds are open from
10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily throughout the summer. They run until Sept. 3. Anyone who enters the playground needs to be wearing close-toed shoes.

Transgender journey chronicled in Beauty Ladner’s Tru Wilson featured in new short film IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Vancouver filmmaker Christina Willings’ new short film Beauty features Ladner’s Tru Wilson and her journey of acceptance. Beauty, which makes its local premiere next month, explores the lives of five gender-creative kids, each uniquely engaged in shaping their ideas of what it means to be fully human. Whether it’s dealing with bullies, having discussions with their parents or navigating the new waters of relationships, Wilson and the others in the film talk about their experiences and their determination to live in authenticity. For Wilson, the process of accepting her identity came in stages — from 30 per cent girl, to half and half, and finally, as she states: “OK, I am 100 per cent girl… but I identify as a transgender girl.” Beauty leads off a selection of new and classic National Film Board of Canada productions at the 30th Vancouver Queer Film Festival, which runs Aug. 9 to 19. Beauty screens at The Coast Is Genderqueer on Friday, Aug. 17 at 5 p.m. at SFU’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts. The Coast Is Genderqueer is the festival’s first short film program that showcases local trans, genderfluid and non-binary stories. These are B.C.-made shorts with an emphasis on youth on screen and emerging filmmakers.
SUBMITTED PHOTO
Beauty explores the life of Tru Wilson and four other young people. When Tru was refused the right to attend Ladner’s Sacred Heart School as a girl, her family filed a human rights complaint against the school and the Catholic Independent Schools of the Vancouver Archdiocese for not supporting her gender identity. In response, the Catholic School Board became one of the first in North America to develop a policy to support gender expression in 2014. Tru and her family went on to participate in a Vancouver park board transgender awareness campaign. In 2015, she was recognized by Vancouver Magazine as one of the city’s 50 most powerful and influential people. When the Royals visited Canada in 2016, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
personally acknowledged Tru for her advocacy during an Experience 150 and Me Youth reception and last year Tru was named Sexual Health Champion by Vancouver’s Options for Sexual Health. She was also named a parade marshal for the Vancouver Pride Parade last year. “Having my family involved in my advocacy is really great because it’s good for other families to see that by supporting your child you are allowing them to really blossom and become just the best that they can be,” Tru told the Optimist last year. The Wilsons’ advocacy work continues as they speak at various events about trans rights, the importance of being true to yourself and the need to support your child in their transition.

Volunteers needed to help share harvest
Earthwise Society is actively recruiting volunteers for its Shared Harvest program that ensures thousands of pounds of fruit in Delta doesn’t go to waste annually. Shared Harvest reaches out to homeowners who have excess fruit or other produce in their home gardens. Earthwise coordinates volunteers to help pick the fruit, which would otherwise fall to the ground. Some of the collected produce is shared with the homeowners and volunteers, and the rest is distributed to local families in need, ensuring that nothing goes to waste. Volunteers spend an hour or two picking fruit with others in the community, knowing they are having a tangible impact on preventing food waste and increasing food security right here in Delta. “The Shared Harvest program has the potential to have even more impact,” says Hadas Levy, program coordinator at Earthwise Society. “Volunteers are key and we are always looking to connect with more people who would like to make a real difference for our community.” Homeowners taking part in the program appreciate that fruit from their trees will not go to waste, but rather have a direct impact on preventing hunger. Those who have fruit in need of harvesting and would like to take part in the Shared Harvest program are asked to call Earthwise Society at 604946-9898.

It was a sweeping success at the 18th annual Tour de Delta for American Kendall Ryan including Saturday night’s criterium in Ladner.
Queen of the Delta streets Kendall Ryan becomes just second women’s competior to win all three races It didn’t matter where she was, Kendall Ryan was the queen of the Delta streets all weekend. The 25-year-old California native put on a show in the 18th annual Tour de Delta. The three-time U.S. National champion became just the second women’s competitor in the event’s history to win all three races. After criterium victories in North Delta and Ladner, her work was done in Sunday’s White Spot Road Race in Tsawwassen — an event she also won a year ago. This year, it was a great lead out by Ryan’s TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank teammates on the final lap that set up her specialty – the sprint. “My teammates absolutely gutted themselves in that lead out. They were relentless today on every attack and just made sure I was able to sit in and save everything for the finish,” explained Ryan who netted nearly $3,400 for the win. “I tried to do the same line I took last year, I think I went a little bit early, but I was still taking the fastest line. I saw Lily Williams coming up on my right and just had to hit it again, so I was happy to hold on to it and take the win a second time.” Williams, who is riding for the Hagens Berman – Spearmint and was runner-up at the US collegiate cross nationals last year, finished second in the bunch sprint. In Ladner less than 24 hours earlier, Ryan covered the 50-lap 45-kilometre course in one

hour, nine minutes, and 23 seconds. “That last lap was super sketch! My teammate (Alison Jackson), I just let her go and they were looking at me like, ‘Why did you just let your teammate go?’ and I said, ‘She isn’t done!’, laughed Ryan. “In the end, there were people coming down the right, I slipped in for third, just barely got by and took that last cor-

ner pretty hot.” On the men’s side, Eric Young was looking to duplicate Ryan’s feat after also winning both criterium events. However, the Colorado native was denied an American sweep of the six races by a Rally Cycling teammate — Victoria native Adam de Vos. The 24-year-old covered the gruelling grueling 155.46 kilometre trek in three hours, 30 minutes, and 12 seconds. As he crossed the finish line he pointed at a tattoo on his wrist of a fox chasing a rabbit. The symbolism has a special meaning to him. “It’s a new fox tattoo, it’s part of my heritage and it’s what my last name means in English,” de Vos explained. “I had a breakaway in Malaysia that I won a stage on and they called me ‘Sneaky Fox’, so that’s what it is.” The last half of Sunday’s race saw several attacks and breaks, but it was de Vos and his Rally Cycling teammates near the front each time, despite the chase group being loaded with speedsters like Hermann Radteam Florenz Knauer. “Florenz - I raced with him on H&R Block actually - he is incredibly quick. In a group of eight when you have the numbers, you can just go with one in four odds, you must make it better for yourself so that’s what we were trying to do,” added de Vos. The Tour de Delta is part of BC Superweek that also includes races in New West, Vancouver, Burnaby and White Rock.

Boyd three-peats as BC Junior champion Owen Tambley wins bronze at own club There was plenty of local flavour standing on the podium at the end of the weekend after the Ladner Lawn Bowling Club proudly hosted the 2018 BC Junior Championships. Tsawwassen Lawn Bowling Club’s Emma Boyd did the expected — winning her third straight BC title. The 2018 South Delta Secondary graduate defeated Sierra Trueman in the gold medal game and now will represent her province at next month’s Canadian Junior Championships in Winnipeg. Boyd was third at the 2017 event in Nova Scotia. Rounding out the girls podium
finishers was Luci Ewen defeating Tsawwassen’s Amanda Tremblay for the bronze medal. On the boys side, Ladner Lawn Bowling Club’s Owen Tambley captured bronze with a win over 2017 BC champion Trevor Birrell in what was actually a rematch of last year’s final. In the championship game, Auzzie Chambers defeated Jason Valchar. He will also be heading to Manitoba as the BC representative at Nationals. A number of BC players are also expected to participate in the open field event.

McManus plays 150th game for Canada
At 24, Sara McManus earned her 150th cap last week.
Still a month away from her 25th birthday, Sara McManus is rapidly climbing up the charts as one of the most experienced international players in the history of the Canadian women’s field hockey team. The South Delta Secondary graduate and Delta Falcon product earned her 150th international cap in Canada’s 4-1 win over Belarus last week. McManus made her senior national team debut when she was just 18 and has been a mainstay with the program since. The seven-year stint includes winning
bronze at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto, marking the first time Canada has reached the podium in 16 years. McManus and the Canadian team is currently on an extensive tour of Europe that began back on June 15 with a 3-0 win over Ireland. It will conclude with three matches against Spain this weekend. McManus was among the goal scorers in a 4-0 win over France on July 1.

DDRCjuniorsrepresentingCanada atCanAmMexeventinMexicoCity It’s a busy summer for Delta rowers on international waters. Delta Deas Rowing Club members Stuart Velestuk and Danica Vangsgaard are in Mexico City this week as members of a national junior team competing in the CanAmMex Regatta. The week-long event wraps up on Saturday. Velestuk and Vangsgaard were selected for the Canadian team based on their performances at last month’s 2018 Speed Orders — National Team Trials held in London, ON. The event determined spots for a variety of international
competitions. “It’s a mix of returning champions and athletes new to international racing. Athletes went through a vigorous week of selection to earn their spots on this list and it’s our hope that future Olympians and World Champions will emerge,” said said Adam Parfitt, RCA Director, Coach and Athlete Pathways. Meanwhile, Ladner native and 2016 Olympian Maxwell Lattimer is in Lucerne Switzerland this weekend for the FISA World Rowing Cup 3. This event is the second international competition of the 2018
season for Canada’s senior athletes, which includes a combination of World Cup 1 medallists and crews making their debut at the World Rowing Cup series. Lattimer, will be teaming with Patrick Keane for the men’s lightweight double sculls event. They were fourth in the same race at World Rowing Cup 1 in Belgium. Lattimer will celebrate his 25th birthday on Saturday. Jane Gumley, who did some training at DDRC before taking her career to UVic, has been named coxswain for Canada’s men’s eight crew.

Pioneers host Coquitlam & Victoria to close out league play The playoffs will start a week early for the Ladner Pioneers as they look to grab second place in the final West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association with two big home games. The Pioneers currently sit in fifth place but can jump up all the way to second by winning their final three games and with a little help too. Ladner (9-5-0) travelled to Abbotsford Wednesday to take on the last place Valley Rebels (0-16-1) before returning home tonight (8 p.m.) to face the second place Coquitlam Adanacs (10-4-1-1). The Pioneers will then close out their regular season schedule Sunday (5 p.m.) when the third place Victoria Wolves (9-5-1) are in town.
Ladner Pioneers are taking aim at second place with key home games against Coquitlam and Victoria.

Ladner has won two previous meetings against Coquitlam while splitting a pair of games against the Wolves in the provincial capital. The first place Nanaimo Timbermen (12-3-0) also will have a say in the Pioneers’ destiny by hosting Victoria last night and Coquitlam on Saturday. Ladner produced a much-needed 12-9 road win over the Royal City Capitals on Saturday night. The hosts actually took a 7-6 lead into the final period when Ladner rallied with six goals. Michael Berekoff led the way with five goals and Spencer Bromley added a hat trick. Sam Clare had four points, including a pair of goals. Zach Wickett made 37 saves.

It was an excellent turnout of SDSS soccer alumni for last month’s third annual Graeme Carswell Memorial Tournament.

Alumni out in full force for Graeme Carswell tourney It was another outstanding turnout for the third annual Graeme Carswell Memorial Tournament. The event was created by longtime South Delta Secondary soccer coaches Stephen Burns and Brent Sweeney in honour of their former student and player who lost his life in a tragic fishing accident on the Chilliwack River in February, 2016. Carswell was just 21. About 40 alumni players participated in seven-aside mini-games followed by a post-match social at the Rose and Crown Pub with all proceeds going to the Graeme Carswell Follow Your Dreams Bursary Award. Burns and Sweeney received input from Carswell’s parents Kim and Kathleen on criteria for award. Previous winners Eric Swanson (2016) and Thorsten Schaub were standout soccer players that also had other deserving qualities. The 2018 recipient is Jacob Kirk — a

standout all-round athlete who will be playing football this fall at the University of Calgary. He was also a member of the school’s rugby and basketball teams. A personalized etched glass trophy was donated and created by Alan Dagg to be presented to the winners. “We are very thankful for the energy and commitment to putting this together by Brent and Stephen and for letting us have the opportunity to present a legacy award in Graeme’s name each year at the high school,” said Kathleen Carswell. “We had an excellent turnout of past and present SDSS soccer players, friends, parents and classmates of Graeme’s who came out in support, friendship and remembrance for the fun soccer event in Graeme’s name. This was followed by a wonderful evening supported by Shelley at the Rose and Crown and all the patrons.”

It is with great shock and sadness that we announce the passing of Wayne Vernon Knowles: loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, cherished son and sibling, and loyal friend to many. Wayne passed away at his home and sanctuary in Point Roberts, with his wife and best friend, Linda, by his side. Wayne’s bright spirit is carried on through his wife Linda, three children Jarrett (Lia), Cassidy (Cam) and Marcus (Mariana), his stepchildren Steve (Tara) and Jon (Danielle), who will all continue to share stories of their dad to his grandchildren-Ella, Boaz, Leisel, Ben and Nicolas. Wayne is also survived by his adoring mother Ruth, his siblings Brenda (Bob) and Jerry (Inge), his first wife and close friend, Patti-Lynn. Wayne was born in Chicago on January 24th, 1954 to Ruth and Dr. Vernon Knowles. Shortly after, the family moved to Saskatoon, and spent summers at their beloved cabin home at Waskesiu Lake. Wayne was a celebrated athlete throughout high school and at The University of Saskatchewan, where he received his MBA. In his twenties, he moved to British Columbia where he raised his three children before finding his permanent home in the quiet town of Point Roberts. Wayne had a vision for community-to build a space for families to enjoy-which he poured his passion and time into through his cultivation of The Cottages of Sea Bright Farms. Wayne will be remembered for his kind and generous spirit; he loved to laugh and was always happiest when surrounded by those closest to him. He embraced all people with an open, accepting heart, treating everyone with a sense of equality and love, and the faith in his church and God only escalated this. Above all else, he valued the importance of family - a quality that he instilled in his children, which will be passed on forever. There will be a service to celebrate Wayne’s life on July 19th, 2018 at 1 o’clock in the afternoon, held at Sea Bright Farms, in Point Roberts, Washington. If travelling from Vancouver, please anticipate possible border line-ups, where you will need your passport.
Jack died unexpectedly on July 2, 2018 following complications of heart surgery. He was born 66 years ago in Montreal, Quebec but moved to BC when he was 5 years old. Jack grew up in Richmond and in his youth was an avid soccer and baseball player. He moved to Ladner with his family in the mid ‘90s where he has lived ever since. Jack worked in construction his whole life and was proud to be part of the Progressive/Performance team for over 40 years. He loved boating, wakeboarding and surfing, golfing, tropical winter vacations, good food and a cold Corona now and then. He was a devoted Dad to Stephen, Tyler and Crystal, loving partner to Cathy and only brother to Sandra. He is also remembered by family (nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins) in Langley, Kelowna, Montreal and the USA as well as many friends and co-workers.
With sadness we announce the passing of Curtis Hocking on June 25, 2018 at Comox Valley Seniors Village. Curtis was born on July 15, 1941 in Russell, Manitoba. He and Jill, his wife of 54 years, raised their family in the communities of Nanaimo and Parksville. Curtis had a lifelong passion for boats of all kinds, cruising with Jill, crafting wooden boats as a hobby and living for 22 years in a float home community in Ladner, B.C. In retirement, he and Jill took up RVing, spending several winters in Arizona and in 2010 moved to Comox, B.C. He enjoyed woodworking, small engines, his stroke groups and the Comox Seniors center. Curtis was always eager to help out a friend or neighbour and never backed away from a challenge, even after his stroke in 2002. He enjoyed the company of dear friends and family and took great pride in his three children and their families. Curtis is survived by his wife Jill, son Craig (Shelley), daughters Karen (Marcus Bright) and Christel (Al Benjaminsen), brother Dennis and sisters Thora (Brian Gilchrist) and Lila Mclean and 4 grandchildren. Thank you to Dr. Trevor Shoesmith and the staff of Comox Valley Seniors Village for their compassionate care. By his request, no service will be held. A donation may be made to the Comox Valley Senior Support Society, 491 4th St, Courtenay, B.C., V9N 1G9 or the Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation, 101 Lerwick Road, Courtenay, B.C., V9N 9Z9.
Sandy spent his early years in Manitoba on the farm. He later joined the Air Force where he received his electronics training. He moved to the Vancouver area in 1966 where he met his wife and began his 45 year career as an elevator adjustor with Montgomery Elevators. Sandy enjoyed his time on the golf course, was an avid fan of both the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Winnipeg Jets and was a long time member of the Ladner Legion.
LARKINS, Garfield April 29, 1945 - June 17, 2018
Sandy was predeceased by his mother Audrey, father Chip and siblings Leon, Lance and Terry. Sandy will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 49 years, Marliss; children Scott (Tanya), Jaime and Stacy; grandchildren Connor, Bradley and Kaitlyn; stepfather Les and siblings Darryl, Shelly (Dan), Denise (Rick), Charlene (Pat), and Aubrey (Linda).
“My darling you are now at peace”
Garf was a long time Ladner resident. He coached and was involved in girls’ soccer for many years. He founded the Ladner Fishermen 50+ hockey team and played with them until being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. He is survived by his loving wife Carol (Brennan), his daughters NIkki (Donny), Dee Dee (Randy), Angy, his stepdaughters Charlene (Ron), Kristy (James), 7 grandsons and one granddaughter, sister Lois (Terry), nieces and nephews. I would like to thank the amazing staff (Eagle Point) at Deltaview Enrichment Centre for the wonderful care that they gave Garf over the last 7 years. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC. Celebration of Life, upstairs at the Ladner Legion on Saturday, July 14th at 3 p.m.
Celebration of Life Sunday, July 22, 2018, 1:30 pm at Tsawwassen Springs Golf Course. Instead of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Jack to BC Children’s Hospital, Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC, Delta Hospice Society (Bereavement Services) or a charity of your choice.
SANDERSON, Homer (Sandy) December 9, 1943 - July 5, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather after a short battle with cancer.
The family would like to thank Dr. David Kason for his support, all the angel nurses and support staff at the Irene Thomas Hospice House and everyone who took the time to visit Sandy and Marliss in his final days. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Delta Hospice Foundation. Condolences may be offered at www.deltafuneral.ca Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
