Losse autopsy reveals cause Coroner’s report states Tsawwassen teen died due to complications from stroke IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
A coroner’s autopsy report has revealed that Kyle Losse died as a result of complications due to a stroke. The report was shared recently with the Optimist by Kyle’s parents Niki and Brian who say they were surprised by the findings. “A stroke didn’t even cross my mind,” said Niki. “It makes me question the care that we received. How could Delta Hospital release him saying he was alert and talking if he was really having a stroke? He was not alert and not talking full sentences. He needed help getting dressed and walking.” According to the autopsy report, there are strong suggestions that the stroke was caused due to fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD). “FMD is a non-inflammatory, non-atherosclerotic arteriopathy that is classically described as a string-of beads lesion on angiography with a cerebral-renal distribution,” said the report. “The historical features of this case show features that would be consistent with the inti-

He was responsive, but weak and unable to stand on his own. Brian picked him up and carried him to the car and they rushed Kyle to Delta Hospital emergency. He was admitted and remained in the hospital for eight hours where some tests were done and was discharged the following morning seemingly in

good enough health to go home. But his condition soon worsened and he was rushed by ambulance to BC Children’s Hospital where a CT scan showed a significant brain injury that doctors could not explain. He was taken off life support on Jan. 23. Shortly after his death both the BC Coroner’s Service and Fraser Health launched investigations with the family consenting to a full autopsy, which was performed on Jan. 25
and 26 at BC Children’s Hospital. At the time Kyle was found on the bathroom floor an e-vape device was found. There has been speculation that Kyle’s brain injury was due to a reaction from nicotine, but the autopsy showed that no nicotine was present in his system. “He was not vaping and had not been vaping at all because nothing was present in his system,” said Niki. “He probably had it with him because he was hiding it from us. In my mind, I feel like they [Delta Hospital] made an assumption. They assumed it was nicotine and a nicotine overdose, but they never tested for that. I just feel like running that test to ensure that was the cause would have come back negative and they could have started testing for something else.” Niki said the family has been in contact with the coroner to ask if further tests had been done could Kyle’s death have been prevented, but due to the brain damage the coroner said they will never know that answer. “We will really never know if the outcome could
have been different, but I feel they could have done more. Checking us out of the hospital and he was having a stroke…that just blows my mind,” said Niki. “There is no history of stroke in our family. It just doesn’t make any sense.” She said the coroner has indicated that their review has not concluded and that they continue to be in contact with the family. Niki said since they received the autopsy report they have not spoken with Fraser Health, but they have consulted a lawyer to determine with legal options they may have. Fraser Health spokesperson Tasleem Juma said they know this is a challenging time for the family. “We are awaiting further information from the Coroner’s Service. Our understanding is the investigation is ongoing and any questions about it should be directed to them,” said Juma. Kyle was a popular and promising baseball talent whose death has had a profound impact in the community and throughout the broader baseball community across the province.
City to provide half of the funding for SDSS track SANDOR GYARMATI

South Delta Secondary has moved a step closer to getting a refurbished track by the next school year. Council on Monday unanimously voted in favour of a staff recommendation for the city to provide 50 per cent of the project funding, up to a maximum of $175,000, toward the high school’s track resurfacing, subject
to several conditions. The proposal was originally put forward by the school board, which has a separate, more complex, proposal to build an entirely new track at North Delta Secondary. It was endorsed by the school board/council liaison committee. The city doesn’t have funding set aside for the project but can draw upon a contingency fund. In order to proceed, an
Summer SCRATCH AND SAVE
independent consultant would specify and oversee the installation. The city is hoping the life expectancy of the new rubberized track surface “may be much greater” than the expected eight years. The project must go through the proper procurement process and a shared use agreement between Delta and the district must be developed and signed prior to the contract award.
The city wants assurances from the district that the public and community sporting groups will have the ability to access the refurbished track. Delta would take the lead allocating times during nonschool times. A staff report notes the installation is estimated to be only one month, however, installation of synthetic surfaces is weather dependent. “Should Council sup-
port this request, every attempt will be made to achieve installation before the fall of 2018. However, there is still considerable work to be done in preparing specifications and following the prescribed procurement process,” the report notes. In a letter to the city, superintendent Doug Sheppard notes the district does not foresee any major asphalt base or surface repairs to be required.

Parents lobby city to name diamond in honour of Kyle IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
All they want is a small way to remember their son. Brian and Niki Losse, who lost their son Kyle, 14, a popular and promising baseball talent in January, continue to lobby the City of Delta to have a diamond at Tsawwassen’s Winskill Park named in Kyle’s honour. But after several meetings with Delta, nothing seems to be materializing. “They basically told us that is would not happen. It was quite disappointing to hear,” said Niki. “We even said it could just be called Field #14 (Kyle’s jersey number). Kyle impacted so many people, so many kids. We just want something positive and a reminder of his life.” The Losse’s have letters of support from Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta baseball associations and others in the community. They have also started a petition at change.org. There are more than 800 signatures so far, and Niki

If that’s the next step, then we will do that,” she said. “I know we are in an election, so hopefully one of the candidates will want to back us on this. I do get where Delta is coming from, but this is more of a reminder of the kids that he was. He was all about helping others and making sure everyone felt welcomed both on and off the field.” Delta’s parks and rec director Ken Kuntz said Delta does not support
naming municipal assets in memory of. “We do have a specific memorial bench program, but council in general has not supported the notion of re-naming municipal facilities,” said Kuntz. A memorial bench was installed in front of the concession at Winskill. Kuntz said one compromise he did discuss with the Losse’s was a scoreboard. “We promised that we would develop a concept for them and get back together with them. We are trying to come up with something in between that council can support while we also celebrate Kyle’s life,” said Kuntz.

DPD officer investigated for improper tickets
Const. denies allegations; case review granted IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Disciplinary action has been recommended for a Delta police officer after a public complaint over improper traffic violation tickets. According to the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) Const. Byron Ritchie has denied the allegations against him and has requested a Review on the Record into the disciplinary decision. The OPCC said that review would commence in the near future. On Aug. 29, 2016, a Sergeant of the Greater Vancouver Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU) advised the Delta police that a complaint had been received against Ritchie, a member of the IRSU. The public complaint was from a member of the public whose wife had been issued a violation ticket by Ritchie on July 15, 2016. According to the
OPCC, Ritchie stopped the female driver after he had observed her talking on her cell phone while driving. Ritchie issued a ticket for failure to wear a seat belt and for failure to produce vehicle insurance. The female driver stated that she was wearing a seat belt and had produced the vehicle’s insurance papers for the officer. Ritchie told the driver that she was “getting a break” with the noted offences as the combined fines were less than receiving a ticket for distracted driving. Following a review by the IRSU, a formal investigation was launched by the OPCC in September 2016. That review found that in 11 different instances from June and July 2016, Ritchie knowingly issued motor vehicle tickets for offences that did not occur and investigators found that his conduct did in fact constitute deceit set out in the police act. The review was concluded on April 28, 2017
and a final investigation report was submitted to the Discipline Authority. On May 11, 2017, following his review of the report, Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord, as the Discipline Authority, substantiated the 11 allegations. Dubord set out a proposed ranged of discipline from requiring Ritchie to work under close supervision up to and including dismissal. The recommendations included: a reduction of rank for 12 months from First Class Constable to Second Class Constable; suspension of pay of two days (10 hours) for each of the 11 offences, totaling 22 days of suspension without pay; and Ritchie was to work under close supervision for a period of one year and to participate, to the satisfaction of his supervisors, in a return to work plan. In June 2018, Ritchie requested a public hearing and review as he denied that the allegations were deceitful.

Collaborative approach sought for dredging Delta MP says there’s a perceived lack of leadership from all levels of government on the issue IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
A more collaborative approach to local channel dredging is being sought by government officials and residents affected in the community. Recently Ladner Reach Properties held a meeting, which included about 50 waterfront property owners, and Delta MP Carla Qualtrough. Themes discussed included what the federal government is doing to help residents, and what can be done about the fed’s complex rules and policies affecting resident’ costs. “There is a lot of uncertainty around land values, businesses being impacted by everything going on along the river,” said Qualtrough. “There is this on-going need for dredging maintenance and how property owners are affected. To be blunt, there is a perceived lack of leadership from government on all levels on this issue. This has been punted back and forth to different
departments and levels of government. I’ve been trying to bring people together to figure out how we show leadership federally, but who is ultimately responsible.” Qualtrough said she feels there is progress being made. “I’ve written letters and spoken to the Minister of Fisheries. I expect we will, as a federal government, get back into the game of secondary dredging,” she said. Mike Owen, who hosted the meeting, said constant testing and studies is expensive and counterproductive for the property owners along the water. He said it’s time that both the local and federal governments address this issue in a cost-effective way. “This is naturally occurring sediment that is coming down the river and we are charged for taking it away,” said Owen. “In my case it added major costs to my tenants to take away the sediment. The rules have to be changed until

It’s so frustrating for us along the river.” Meanwhile, Delta council, at its June 25 meeting, endorsed a request to schedule a meeting with key government and industry stakeholders. The purpose of the meeting
Public Swimming
is to develop a strategy to better engage the provincial and federal governments, regarding the need for dedicated funding to dredge the local river channels of the Fraser. Sean McGill, the city’s director of corporate services, said that in the last few years some areas
“have been filling in quite fast” and what’s needed is an ongoing program of spot dredging to avoid a much bigger problem of sediment buildup. His report to council notes that approximately 215,000 cubic metres of sediment needs to be removed from the Ladner
channels to restore them to sub-grade, or approximately half that to dredge the channels to grade. Back in 2012, Delta entered into a joint $10-million funding program with the province, the port authority and the City of Richmond to dredge channels around Ladner and Steveston. Work was completed in February 2015. A residual $1.4 million is left to undertake targeted dredging in the Ladner channels. McGill noted staff are in discussions with the port and the Ladner Sediment Group to identify priority areas and determine the best course of action. McGill noted annual funding from senior governments of about $800,000 would be sufficient to undertake maintenance dredging of the Ladner channels every three to four years. It could be less if the feds waived the ocean disposal fees for dredged sediment. — With files from Sandor Gyarmati

Murphy’s Law TED MURPHY
There were always going to be winners and losers when it came to the province’s new employer health tax, so I guess it’s not surprising there’s one of each when it comes to local government here in Delta. The NDP initiative that eliminates Medical Services Plan premiums and shifts the financial burden onto employers looks like it will end up being cost neutral for the Delta School District following Finance Minister Carole James’ announcement earlier this month, but will add significant expense for the City of Delta. Although it might seem strange that one arm of local government is spared but another gets hit hard, it wasn’t that difficult to envision this kind of outcome. You see, the school district gets its funding from the province, so if it incurs additional costs, it’s likely to turn to Victoria to offset them or tell everyone who will listen that it has been forced to cut staffing or programs (or both) to make up the difference. The City of Delta, on the other hand, is funded by me and you, so the provincial government isn’t anywhere near as concerned when costs rise on that front. The upshot to all of this is that the employer health tax will hit city hall to the tune of about $850,000 annually, an amount that will either have to be absorbed into the existing budget, which would mean cuts elsewhere, or passed along to taxpayers. The new council that will be elected this fall will have to decide how it wants to proceed on this issue, but I suspect it would be more apt to pass those costs along, making sure all property owners know it’s courtesy of the NDP government, rather than have to cut local services to spare Victoria from any backlash. It would mean about one per cent more on your tax bill to cover Delta’s additional payroll costs, so if you’re paying, say, $4,000 a year in property taxes, you’d have to cough up another $40 to cover the new expense. That extra hit on the property tax bill would be chump change compared to paying a year’s worth of MSP premiums out of your own pocket, but if you weren’t having to cover your own premiums, then it’s simply one more tax that’s being piled on top of all the others. It’s another example of a tax that produces both winners and losers.
Team-first mentality leads to community success It’s been an eventful few weeks. The world watched with baited breath to see if the unimaginable could happen, to extract 12 young soccer players and their coach from Thailand’s Tham Lang cave where they had been trapped a mile underground for nine days. Two thousand Thai soldiers, 200 divers and thousands of people from around the globe used their expertise to successfully extract the boys unharmed from the watery cave. It was a miracle. What made this daring and incredibly dangerous rescue a success, teamwork. More international teamwork was on display during the month long World Cup. The most watched sporting event in the world concluded last weekend with two of the best soccer teams competing for the coveted FIFA trophy. France, who’s squad is 80 per cent from migrant backgrounds, embraced the teams race and diversity and celebrated the win of soccer’s biggest prize. The Croatian team, who’s players and their families suffered atrocities during the Yugoslavia civil war, were the underdogs who won our hearts for their skill and commanding team work. These two extraordinary examples of collective energy are awe inspiring and motivating. I have been riveted. There must be a place for the
Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT
individual in society but collectively a team can make a bigger impact. That’s because by nature team members share responsibility, are interdependent and work towards a common goal. A team’s commitment to a final outcome creates synergy that almost always produces higher performance. In our community there is some very important teamwork going on. It’s amongst the candidates who are running in this fall’s municipal election. There are three slates of candidates competing for your vote, Independents Working For You, headed by Jim Cessford, George Harvie’s team Achieving for Delta, and Team Delta headed by Sylvia Bishop. I admire the candidates that choose to run independently but nowadays politicians are subject
to unprecedented harsh criticism on so many platforms you’ve got to be tough to run alone. Running for office is also expensive so it only seems natural that we are seeing an increase in slates of candidates. We need quality people running for office so team building is a natural and effective way to entice talent to commit to run for public office. Who is on your team? It may be your church, the people you work with, your sports team or your garden club. My team is made up of blended family and close friends who come from diverse backgrounds. Eccentric, quirky and always interesting, there is division sometimes, but there is always love. The braveness of the soccer team and rescuers who managed to stay calm for two weeks inside a dark cave, or the teams who risked the agony of defeat to achieve World Cup greatness must not fade from our hearts and minds. We need more inspiring team stories. I’ll be looking for a good one on October 22 when we see a municipal election race for the record books. Third option is needed for fall referendum
Editor: This fall, British Columbians will be asked to choose how we elect our legislature. We are given two choices: first past the post or some form of proportional representation (as yet undefined). First past the post has its drawbacks, since rarely does anyone get elected with over 50 per cent of the vote, thus giving the impression the governing group does not really have the support of the majority of the electorate. The yet undefined proportional representation calls for as many as 50 per cent of the members of the legislature to be appointed. So if you like the Canadian Senate, with its unelected, back room appointed party hacks, you will love PR since up to half of the legislature will be exactly these unelectable party hacks. Former B.C. NDP premier Ujjal Dosanjh says he believes PR will usher in extremist parties like those in some European
countries like Germany, the Netherlands and Hungary where it takes a very low percentage of the people to vote in candidates with racist views and that has changed their political landscape in a negative way. There is, however, a third option, a system that is used in one form or another by over 40 countries in the world today, according to Wikipedia. These countries include France, Portugal and Finland. It is called the two-round system. The two-round system (also known as the second ballot, runoff voting or ballotage) is a voting method used to elect a single winner, where the voter casts a single vote for their chosen candidate. However, if no candidate receives over 50 per cent of votes, then all but the two candidates receiving the most votes, are eliminated, and a second round of voting is held usually a week or two later. Obviously, one
will receive over 50 per cent of the votes. This method assures that your member of the legislature is 1. Elected (not an appointed party hack), and 2. Has over 50 per cent of the votes, which is clearly democratic by definition. Yes, if your candidate is not in the top two, you may have to hold your nose and vote for the lesser of two evils, but I am sure this will not be the first time you have held your nose and voted. It is clearly better than having a majority government elected by a minority of the people or having some unelected party hack shoved down your throat. But this third option is not even on the ballot. So, write your MLA and demand that if a democratic system is good enough for one of our founding nations, namely France, it should at least be on the ballot for our consideration and debate. Family grateful to hospital staff
Editor: May I share a good news story about our local Delta Hospital. Recently my husband who has a diagnosis of cancer had to be admitted to Delta Hospital because he had developed extensive and threatening blood clots. From the time of initial contact at ER check-in to the 12-day stay on the second floor every staff member treated
us with the utmost respect and dignity. Every single nurse, doctor, technician, administrator and support staff were caring, loving and advocating aggressively for the health of my husband. The staff at Delta Hospital are amazing human beings and our family is endlessly grateful for the care we received. I spent hours all day at
the hospital witnessing staff work. Their work is incredibly difficult and demands great skill and patience. Consistently without fail I watched Delta Hospital staff perform their duties with skill, love, a smile on their face and genuine care for the patient they held. Thank you so much Delta Hospital staff. Carol Johnson

Responding to the scene of a death is part of the job for all first responders. I have worked in policing for a lot of years and I can safely say I have experienced almost everything. But when I heard about what happened last week, it stopped me in my tracks. Our officers responded to a sudden death. A man was out walking his dog and collapsed, having had a massive heart attack. Paramedics attempted to revive him to no avail. And as with any scene like this, all first responders were busy doing their jobs. But when I received a letter from the victim’s brother about the action our Delta police officers took, it
underscored for me just how special the people who work here are. This is what he wrote: Dear Chief Dubord, My brother Scotty Thomson had a heart attack in Ladner on July 1st. It has been a busy and confusing week as you can imagine, but some things need to be said even amongst all the emotion, duties and work. Arriving at the scene I was impressed at how secured and safe it felt. Certainly a tragedy had occurred but the officers in charge had laid a blanket of calm all around and order had been restored. Secondly I was invited in to the scene, not pushed or pulled and I was allowed to absorb the scene at a rate I could handle. My family also felt this. The paramedics came to me and apologized for not succeeding but I knew by their tone that they did all that they could and my brother had died. The three officers were again most understanding and as victim services arrived one of the officers escorted us all up to my brother’s con-
30-50% off blinds
dominium, widow, family and friends. All knew he was in charge. Information was exchanged and we descended back to the laneway where my brother lay. Soon the coroner arrived and my brother was prepared for transport. Now something amazing happened. My brother had been walking his dog and at the scene she was always, innocently under foot. But at this point a constable from the Delta police at the scene bent down and picked up my brothers dog, Pepper, and allowed her to see and smell my brother Scotty’s face. This sublime act seemed to allow his passing. Pepper, having said her farewell, once again on the ground, trotted away. It was the mark of the DPD, it was the mark of the man, it was the mark of humanity. I thought I’d pass it on. Thank you, Jamie Thomson. That small act of kindness and compassion for a grieving family and a confused pet will forever be remembered. And it is why I am so proud of our officers and the DPD.

More words start with the letter ‘S’ than any other letter. But if you have a hearing loss it can feel as though those words have been removed from your hearing dictionary. You have probably also lost the ability to hear the letters; ‘F-P-K & T’. With untreated hearing loss, you won’t be hearing those words either. Hearing aids from NexGen Hearing can put the words back and make hearing easier.

Members of the Boundary Bay Bluebacks are once again hitting the water to help out BC Children’s Hospital. The summer swim club, based out of the Winskill Aquatic Centre, has more than 160 swimmers ages two to 22. Last summer they raised $9,300 during their swim-a-thon. This year they are hoping to raise more than $10,000. On July 20, the swimmers will swim for an hour non-stop in attempts to raise the money. The event will take place from 3:30 to 6 p.m. with more than 100 swimmers participating. “We really love giving back to the community and since so many of our swimmers have used the resources at Children’s, we think it is absolutely necessary to give back and help other children,” said Sidney Peake, spokesperson for the club. “We will be collecting donations on that day at the pool so feel free to drop by. City makes change to include marijuana with legalization looming
Delta has polished up its smoking bylaw to include marijuana. Council recently made amendments to the city’s regulations to include cannabis, which will be legalized later this year, but also aimed at bringing Delta’s bylaw more in line with other municipalities with regards to smoking regulations. Cannabis smoking will be prohibited from

places similar to where alcohol consumption is prohibited, which is more restrictive than tobacco limitations. Therefore, in addition to prohibiting the smoking of cannabis everywhere that the smoking of tobacco is prohibited, the new regulation also prohibits cannabis on highways, streets and other ways open to public use, such as sidewalks and boulevards.
The revised bylaw also treats e-cigarettes the same as traditional cigarettes, while the regulations also remove the ability to smoke in a designated smoking room or designated outdoor seating area of a liquor outlet. Meanwhile, there’s a minimum 7.5 metres minimum distance a person is smoking must be from a door, openable window, air intake of a building,
transit stop, a park, municipal land or public event. An owner or manager of a business is responsible that there’s no smoking allowed in or around their premises. Signage requirements are to be simplified to decrease expense and confusion for the business. Delta staff note other bylaws that may require updates related to cannabis are under review.

Say hello to Chi Chi
Chi Chi is a one year old male shepherd mix who weighs around 60lbs. Originally rescued by a group in Korea, he has traveled to Canada to find his forever home. Chi Chi is shy at first, and appreciates a little time and patience to get to know new people. He loves other dogs, big and small, and is also great with cats. We have found having another dog in the home is very beneficial to these Korean dogs and helps give them security and confidence. Chi Chi is working on his leash skills, and because he is still adjusting to the world and it’s sounds and sights, we always double leash when outside the home. He is good in his crate, and will need some work on house breaking as he adjusts to home life. He is neutered and up to date on all shots and vaccines and microchipped. For more pictures of this stunning guy, check out his album on our FB pages. If you feel you could be a good match for Chi Chi, please email us at pbandchi@gmail.com

This summer when I’m on vacation, I plan to do things a little differently. There’ll be no ferry involved. No plane. No car with a roof rack. There’ll be no suitcase, no map, no boarding ticket. There’ll be no guidebook, no travel journal, no carry-on bag. There’ll be no customs, no security, no passport, no wrestling with an overhead bin. There will be a lot of, well, nothing. Or nothing terribly scripted, at least. I won’t be eyeballing the screen at the departure gate, but I may be staring at the clouds. I won’t be unpacking the swimsuit and shorts, but I’ll likely be wandering barefoot. This summer when I’m
on vacation, I won’t need to cancel the papers or shutter the blinds. If the neighbours conclude that I’m on holidays, it won’t be because I’ve asked them to bring in the mail, but because they’ll see me strolling down the street on a Tuesday at noon. Oh, off to get sushi, perhaps. Or to buy a magazine. Or to collect rocks at the beach. I’ll figure that out at the time. This, of course, is the way you approach an improvised vacation. You
“Do you want to go anywhere today?” I asked the husband on day one of the last one. “I don’t know,” said the husband. “Maybe we just get on a bus and see where it takes us?” I considered the proposal. It sounded like a perfect fit for a non-holiday holiday. And so we did just that. We got on a bus, and got off in the city. We wandered, and let our feet decide where to take us. They led us to an art

Hospice Cottage Charity Shoppe looks to bolster volunteer ranks IAN JACQUES

The Hospice Cottage Charity Shoppe, successfully operated by more than 100 volunteers, supports the work of the Delta Hospice Society. However, to help continue the good work, the Tsawwassen store is in need of more volunteers.

Tom and Ruby Peet are two of the valued volunteers at the Hospice Cottage Charity Shoppe. “As volunteers have moved away or resigned after many years of service, we are reaching out to invite people to join the comradery, friendships and connections to others,” said Delta Hospice Society director of operations Sarah Macey. “We welcome people who enjoy customer service roles, as well as anyone with a special area of interest like toys, books, sewing notions, cashiering or other specialty areas. As the years pass, many volunteers are finding they are using the services of the Delta Hospice Society and find even more meaning in their work.” Macey said age does not matter. Students are welcome, especially on Saturdays. “We love having men help outside receiving
Two long-standing volunteers that fill the many roles Macey has described are Tom and Ruby Peet. Ruby works in the store and recently received her 20-year pin of volunteer recognition. “She is ‘the Friday morning cashier,’” said proud husband Tom. “She started in 1998. She knows many, if not all, the regular customers by name.” Tom said he started volunteering as something to do after he retired. He received his 15-year pin this year. “I’m the service guy. I greet people and do whatever is needed in the store to make sure that it runs properly,” he said. “We both love what we do.” Tom said the couple believes very strongly in what Delta Hospice stands for, which is the reason
why they continue to give back. “We are both dedicated to the premise of the (Delta) Hospice Society. Delta Hospice Society makes a lot of sense,” he said. “We are not kids. I’m 85 and my wife has just turned 80 and we see what the Delta Hospice Society does as being a vital organ
within the community of Delta. If I was in the position of dying this is the place that I would like to be with my family by my side for my last few days.” Those interested in volunteering can contact volunteer coordinator Sandy Schmidt at 604-948-0660 or email sarah@deltahospice.org.

Fun! If there is a good definition of this year’s fiveday club/vacation Bible school, fun has got to be it. This summer St. Andrew’s Church in partnership with Child Evangelism Fellowship of BC is inviting all kids ages 5-12 to Dive: An Underwater Adventure Exploring God’s Amazing Grace at Diefenbaker Park. There will be Bible lessons, games, skits, snacks, surprises, music, stories, friends and more. Land Use Contract Discharge Bylaw No. 7721
Proposal: The City of Delta is proposing to change the minimum lot width for subdivision in the Single Detached Residential 7 (RS7) zone from 12 m to 11 m. Prior to April 9, 2018, the minimum lot width in the predecessor of this zone under the previous Zoning Bylaw (“Delta Zoning Bylaw No. 2750, 1977”) was 11 m. With the adoption of the new “Delta Zoning Bylaw No. 7600, 2017” in April 2018, the minimum lot width was increased from 11 m to 12 m. Background: At the Public Hearing for “Delta Zoning Bylaw No. 7600, 2017”, a majority of speakers noted support for a continued 11 m minimum lot width within the Single Detached Residential 7 (RS7) zone, in order to allow for smaller detached homes on smaller lots and to respect the precedent that had already been set in infill areas. In response, an amendment to change the minimum lot width in the Single Detached Residential 7 (RS7) zone back to 11 m has been brought forward. As most properties require rezoning approval in order to subdivide, design considerations for 11 m wide lots would be addressed on a case-by-case basis through review during the rezoning process. “Delta Zoning Bylaw No. 7600, 2017” Amendment Bylaw No. 7777 To amend “Delta Zoning Bylaw No. 7600, 2017” by changing the minimum lot width for subdivision in the Single Detached Residential 7 (RS7) zone from 12 m to 11 m.

This morning as you woke up, so did ‘possibility.’ It’s constantly lingering in the air around you. What can I do today? Your ‘possibility’ is ready to enlarge your life. Possibility means you are aware of God who is behind all things good and makes all things possible to those who believe. Matthew 19:26 And looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Yet, opposing possibility is the anxious and attention seeking ‘limitation.’ Limitation waits for you to wake up, so that it can remind you of all you can’t do today. It also lingers to let you know you don’t have enough

your lack so you make a more appropriate choice. Every day these two forces ask you to choose. “Choose me,” says limitation, “don’t overstretch and believe in the ‘possibility’ that is in God, you will only fail.” It will limit your loving kindness, your grace, and your believing. “But,” possibility shouts, “there is another way! Perfection is not required for it to be possible”. Possibility says, “Come on! Step out! Take a leap! Let’s go! Trust God!” So, which will lead you today? Only you can decide. You must choose, but just a little suggestion, if I may, say hello to possibility and you will find limitation won’t have much to say to you today.

hey are young theatre pioneers in South Delta. After years of singing, dancing, building sets and practicing lines at South Delta Secondary, the graduating theatre students from the class of 2018 have gone out on their own creating the independent production company – Coffeehouse Theatre Company. Their first production is The Importance of Being Earnest, which will be presented July 27 and 28 at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre.
For their inaugural production, Coffeehouse Theatre Company chose perform this well-known play written by renowned poet and playwright Oscar Wilde. Since 1894, The Importance of Being Earnest has proven to be one of the best comedies from the Victorian era where Wilde pokes fun at the social structure, fainting course, and mustachio dandies. “We have all done theatre for years with Equinox Theatre and we were not quite ready for that to be our last show. Many of us want to go into theatre as our careers,” said company founder and show director
Syrah Khan. “So we decided why not start our own production company. It is a completely teen directed and managed company.” Khan said the main group comes from the 2018 grad class at SDSS, but there is also other students from Delta and the Lower Mainland. Rehearsals started in mid-June, but have really picked up in recent weeks with the company meeting every day. “The production team has been working since May,” said producer/house manager and publicity director Brooke McCarthy. “There are eight cast members and eight crew members.”
Three shows will be on July 27 and 28 with evening shows both days at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10. On July 28 there is also a matinee at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15, with a high tea included in that admission price. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the evening shows and 1:30 p.m. for the Saturday matinee. Email coffeehousetheatreco@gmail.com or call 604-790-2041 for tickets. To help aid in the production costs, a GoFundMe page has been started at: https://www. gofundme.com/j46ngjthe-importance-of-beingearnest. “Everyone has been working very hard, espe-
cially with the timeframe we have given ourselves. It isn’t ideal to put on a play this fast, but we have been working really hard. It has come so far already,” said Khan. McCarthy adds that it has been cool to work with a cast and crew of people that are eager to get into this business and start right out of high school. “There is something unique about working with all teenagers and youth from this area. You don’t see this in many shows,” adds Khan. “To have teenagers staring and in charge of a show is something you just don’t see especially here in South Delta.”
Primerose to host third annual classic car show IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Classic cars, music, food and fun – all the makings of a great fundraising event this Sunday in support of the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. The third annual Primerose Hotrod &
Classic Car Show runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, July 22 in the parking lot around the Primerose Mediterranean Restaurant (6165 Highway 17A in Ladner). All makes and models of cars are welcome at this familyfriendly event. Trophies will be awarded for first place and runner-up in
each category. Registration fee is $20 with all proceeds going to the Foundation. A pancake breakfast for $5 kicks things off at 8 a.m. Primerose owner Sia Adjudani is hoping to have 100 cars on display. “That’s what we had last year, so I’m hoping we hit that mark again,” he said. “So far we have 40
to 45 cars pre-registered, but every day I’m getting calls from car owners in Langley, Chilliwack who want to come out and be a part of the show.” Last year more than $1,000 was raised to support the hospital. “When my wife and I took over the restaurant, we thought how are
we going to give back,” Adjudani said. “Volunteer and charity work is a big part of our lives. We live in North Delta, our business is in South Delta. One day I was looking around and there is this empty parking lot on Sundays. It’s just my business and nothing else is open, so I thought about the idea of a car show.”

Keep your brain healthy with fitness Well on Your Way P.J. WREN
What if you had in your possession a tool that could give you instantaneous benefits to your brain? A tool that could improve your focus and your ability to keep your attention on a task?
A tool that could protect you from dementia, Alzheimer’s, and even depression? And, finally, a tool that doesn’t cost a thing and that everyone has access to? Would you use it? Hell yes you would, and hell yes you can because the tool in question is exercise. Experts are all in agreement that exercise can protect the brain and has immediate and long-lasting effects to it. A study completed at the University of British Columbia found that regular aerobic exercise boosted the size of the hippocampus, the area of the brain involved in
verbal memory and learning. This makes the brain stronger and less susceptible to dementia and Alzheimer’s. In another newer study published in the journal Neurology: Clinical Practice they discovered that people who exercised about 52 hours over a period of six months had the greatest improvements in various thinking and speed tests. This was a large sam-
pling of people that they used as well. The data included more than 11,000 older people. On average, these people exercised for about an hour, three times a week, and the effect to the brain applied to both people without cognitive decline as well as those with mild cognitive impairment or dementia. In another study, published in an online issue of the journal Neurology,
they reported that women with higher levels of physical fitness at middle age were nearly 90 per cent less likely to develop dementia decades later (see sidebar). What type of exercise benefits the brain the best? Aerobic exercise is backed the most by research. Some examples include brisk walking, running, circuit training, swimming, bike riding and hiking.
To get the best brain boost aim for 150 minutes a week, working at a moderate-intensity (trainer tip: this is where you can talk, but you couldn’t be bothered to). My final thought, it is more evident than ever that we need to exercise. All of the research, the data, the information is pointing/yelling/screaming at us to move more. Our health, and now our brains, can’t wait until later. We have to start now. PJ Wren is a local personal trainer & writer. People of all ages have a fascination with flying. There is something about ‘taking to the skies’ that challenges and excites. While we may never have the experience of flying our own plane, we can share in the thrill of seeing others do it. Alpha Aviation, Alpha Technologies and the City of Delta are proud to sponsor the Boundary Bay Air Show on Saturday, July 21. The Boundary Bay Air Show has quickly become a highly-anticipated community favourite, attracting a crowd in excess of 15,000. There are marquee quality performers, unique static aircraft displays, thrilling aerobatic acts, and a car/plane race. As one of the few remaining free admission air shows, this event holds an appeal for people of all ages. From children’s activities and delicious food options, to the non-

CELEBRATING 3 YEARS AS BC’S LOCALLY OWNED AVIATION SUPER STORE
Boundary Bay Airshow
Airshow features allstar lineup of pilots Each year the Boundary Bay Air show is fortunate that great pilots from across North America come to South Delta to perform. Besides showing off their skills in the sky, the pilots will let spectators get an up close look at the aircraft, pose for pictures and even sign a few autographs. Here are some of the featured performers at this year’s show: Pilot Brent Handy Born in Wyevale, Ont., Brent knew from a young age that he wanted to spend his time in the air. His early flight training was earned through the Air Cadet program. His first solo was in an Air Cadet glider, at age 16. Ten years later, Brent’s dream of becoming a CF-18 Hornet pilot was a reality. And through a fortunate series of events, he was selected to fly as a team pilot with the renowned Canadian Forces Snowbirds jet team in 2011. Following his tour with the Snowbirds in 2012/13, he took his air show career to the next level. Purchasing a beautiful Pitts S-2, he had the good fortune of polishing his aerobatic prowess with air show legend Wayne Handley. 2018 will mark his fifth season as an unrestricted, surface-rated aerobatic performer. Expect an adrenaline-filled, heartpumping series of tumbles, torque rolls, and loops. Pilot Vicky Benzing
SUBMITTED PHOTO
Brent Handy has been on tour with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds. Born and raised in California, Vicky Benzing is an accomplished pilot, skydiver, aerobatic performer, and air racer. With more than 8,000 hours of flight time and more than 1,200 parachute jumps, Vicky has a passion for everything airborne. Her flying career has spanned more than 30 years and she currently holds an Airline Transport Pilot rating as well as commercial ratings in helicopters, seaplanes, and gliders. In addition to aerobatics, Vicky got the racing bug when a friend invited her to “come play in my sandbox” at the National Championship Air Races in Reno, NV. Hellcat among planes on display Visit Delta’s Official Visitor Centre Whether you are a guest or resident,
You won’t have an air show without pilots and performers, but the real stars of the show are the aircraft that they fly in. Some of the aircraft on display in the skies above and below on the tarmac will include:
VOUGHT F4U-7 CORSAIR Serving mainly in the Second World War in the Pacific Theater, the F4U Corsair was the finest carrierbase fighter deployed by any navy and became a fast, versatile and deadly performer and perhaps the best of any U.S. fighter in that conflict. Together with the F6F Hellcat, the Corsair was responsible for the destruction of 7,295 enemy aircraft in air-to-air combat and, in downing enemy planes, it achieved a “kill-to-
loss” ratio of 11 to one, the highest for any fighter plane of the Second World War.
F6F-5N HELLCAT The Grumman F6F Hellcat is an American carrier-based fighter aircraft of the Second World War. Designed to replace the earlier F4F Wildcat and to counter the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero, it was the United States Navy’s dominant fighter in the second half of the Pacific War. The Hellcat competed with the faster Vought F4U Corsair for that role and prevailed, as the Corsair had significant issues with carrier landings. The Corsair instead was primarily deployed to great effect in land-based use by the U.S. Marine Corps.
MESSERSCHMITT ME-109 When the Messerschmitt Me-109 first took to the air in September 1935, a new age in aviation history began. At that time, nearly all of the world’s air forces flew aircraft that were open cockpit, fixed under carriage monoplanes or bi-planes.
BELLANCA AIR CRUISER Built in 1938 as a modification of the Airbus, the Aircruiser was considered by many pilots to be the most efficient single engine airplane ever built. It was originally intended for commercial airline passenger service, but because of regulations that prohibited the use of singleengine transports in such service, it was forced to spend its life in the bush country where it soon made a name for itself.

What happened in 2016 and 2017 was not a normal market; it was a seller’s dream but that’s not the case now. So, as a seller you need to be more educated. The last three sales of closely comparable homes is the absolute best indicator of where your home should be priced. A neighbour’s house down the street may be 5-10% higher in price but it may be on the market for months and getting no showings which risks chasing the market down with price reductions. Buyers have more choice - inventory is near record highs and there is not the intense pressure to buy a home or a condo just hours after the first showings as there once was. Grabbing buyers’ attention in this market with an exceptional marketing plan is extremely important; and that includes pricing your home intelligently. Your sign states you compound? What is compounding?
QUESTION My parents have hearing aids and I want each pair to last as long as possible. How can I help with this?
A. That’s a great question and one that I get asked many times a week.
Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing personalized medications for you. There are many reasons why you may need a compounded medication; you might be allergic to a certain filler in the commercially available product, you may need the medication in a liquid form rather than pill, the medication your doctor wants you to have may be discontinued by the manufacturer or your doctor may want you to have a specially blended cream or ointment for your skin. As a compounding pharmacist, I have undergone many hours of specialized training in order to properly make the exact product that your doctor recommends. I also compound many veterinary products (ever try to pill a cat?), specialized pain creams, bio-identical hormone preparations and many others. If you need help with medications, then a compounded solution might be right for you – come and see me at the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in Tsawwassen for answers.
ANSWER Just like a beloved car, hearing aids perform their best (and for the longest) when they are regularly cleaned, checked and maintained with care: • Always keep hearing aids dry. Make sure they are removed before going swimming, taking a shower, or applying hairspray.

BC-HIP, BBA

“Who Cares? I Do” is not just a slogan – it is THE reason Paul Gibbons, Pharmacist/Owner at the Medicine Shoppe in Tsawwassen, looks forward to helping you every day.
• Get into the habit of cleaning hearing aids everyday. Never use household cleaning products, oil, or water to clean them – instead, use the small brush that was included with the hearing aids and a clean cloth. (If you no longer have the brush or wax filters that originally came with the hearing aids, your hearing health provider will often provide you with replacements free of charge.) • Get hearing aids regularily cleaned and checked by a professional. Consider this person your hearing mechanic! We recommend having them professionally checked and cleaned every 4-6 months, but you should never hesitate to make an appointment to have them looked at if you notice a problem with them in the meantime.

QUESTION:
QUESTION
TENANT OR LANDLORD: WHO PAYS THE BILLS?
Why is it necessary to wait before staining a new pressure treated deck?
ANSWER:
Treatment with waterborne preservatives leaves moisture in the wood that will impede the penetration and drying of stains and paints. We’ve all picked up a piece of treated lumber and had the reaction, “Wow, that’s heavy!”. In fact, a freshly treated piece of 8’ 2x4 could potentially contain over a gallon of moisture. For the best performance of paint and stain coatings, the wood needs to dry prior to the application of the chosen product. Typically, treated wood will be seasoned enough to coat 60 days after installation. Estimating exactly how long to wait is difficult because of a number of contributing factors. Temperature, sun exposure, and recent weather conditions all play a role. Following this simple guideline will give you the best results on your new project no matter how big or small. If you have any questions on this or any other project, our knowledgeable staff are ready and willing to help.
Maintenance, repairs, utilities, water, gas, hydro, lawnmower, taxes. The tenancy agreement must be clearly written and anticipate these expenses. The Board always favors the tenant when the agreement is not clear. Make sure it is compliant with your strata, insurer and mortgagee. ADVICE FROM THE PROS QUESTION:
QUESTION:
Paul Bach Owner 604-940-2268
Paul, Should I service my furnace or boiler every year and if so when is the best time?
Every profession has its own terms they use and ours is no exception. Last month I went through and gave explanations of terms for banknotes. This month I will continue with terms for coins.
ANSWER:
ANSWER:
I usually recommend to our customers that they have their heating equipment looked at every year. In fact with our sophisticated software we can tell you the last time we serviced your equipment what we did to it, and remind you when it is time to service it again. Both boilers and furnaces have a lot of working and moving parts. Just like your car they need to be lubed and oiled and visually checked once a year. By having our technician service your equipment you reduce the emergency call for no heat when the cold snap hits and you need heat right away. Why not turn your heat on with the confidence of knowing a P.J.B. service professional has already looked at your equipment and you have the peace of mind in knowing you won’t freeze. The best time of year to service your heating equipment is usually the end of August or the beginning of September, just before we hit fall. Please don’t hesitate to call and ask for an appointment today as bookings are starting to fill up. Don’t get caught out in the cold!
Description of coin grades are as follows:VG is very good, F is fine,VF is very fine, EF or XF is extra fine and AU is almost uncirculated. The amount of wear on the coin determines which grade the coin is classified as. Sometimes you see a coin graded as VF/XF. That means the coin is in between those two grades. Uncirculated means a coin is new and never been in circulation. These coins are assigned a MS (mint state) followed by a number between 60 and 70. These are related to how nice of uncirculated the coin is, with the higher numbers being better grades. All of the above relate to coins issued for use in circulation. Other coins were issued only for collectors in set or as singles and they use different terms such as PL (proof like) or Proof.

Coinage verses Medal dies are terms used to describe the direction of the portrait when a coin is turned over from side to side. Canadian coins are almost always Medal dies since when you turn the coin over sideways the designs are facing up (^^). American coins are Coinage dies as you turn the coin over sideways the other side is facing down (^ Need down sign inserted). There are some Canadian coins that are errors where the die is Coinage or part way turned. These can be worth considerable amounts. The term Tombac is used to describe the 1942 5 cent made out of Brass since there was also a regular 5 cent made in nickel. All 1943, 1944 and 1945 nickels had a Roman numeral “V” for 5 on them and are known as Victory nickels. All 1943 nickels were Tombacs, while the 1944 and 1945 steel with a blue chrome plating. Some missed the plating and are worth more money. JIM

traditional metal braces?
A: Everyone has heard of the nightmare stories of having metal brackets and wires in their mouths and what kind of damage they can do. Cleaning and flossing your teeth is nearly impossible with these traditional braces. Every month wires get tightened and changed causing the mouth to never really heal properly and the person to deal with the discomfort every month. Dr. Raj Dhiman What we offer at our dental practice is clear tray braces that have no metal or 604-946-9588 wires to interfere with everyday life. These series of trays are slightly different every 2 weeks to correct the alignment of the teeth. The movement is very gradual so there is almost little to no discomfort that you would typically experience with the traditional braces. Monthly appointments are not required because the trays are so simple to change at home on your own. Full time wear during the day and more importantly at night allows treatment time to be less than the braces. Brushing and flossing is just the same as if you weren’t straightening your teeth at all. Complimentary consultations are offered at our office to see if you’d be a candidate for this form of braces. 130 – 4977 Trenant Street Delta

Q: I went for a denture consultation, and
I was told that I required soft tissue management because of irritated and damaged gum tissues. What is this?
A:
604-278-3235
#2 - 6380 No. 3 Road, Richmond, BC westerncns@telus.net • www.westerncoinsandstamps.net
Soft tissue management is a rehabilitation of damaged gum tissues. Irritation and damage to your gum tissue may result from micro organisms harbored in your dentures’ old acrylic, or ill fitting dentures. First, your dentures require cleaning to remove unhealthy organisms contributing to the infl ammation and edema (swelling).Tissue conditioners (temporary soft lining material) are placed on the tissue fitting surface of your dentures to provide a clean positive adaptation to your gum tissues. Healing begins and your tissues are reassessed in a week to confirm the progress of healing. Second and/or third tissue conditioner may need to be applied before continuing the construction of new dentures. Healthy, pink, hard tissues, provide the important base foundation required for a successful denture. New dentures promote a healthy, clean, accurate fitting surface for many years. If you have any questions regarding this procedure or any other denture related subject, please book your free consultation with us.
ANSWER: Sometimes Yes and sometimes No. Let the number dictate the best way to go. Often times clients can save money by paying their penalty and moving into a lower rate. A good mortgage professional will show you the numbers and it is their job to give you an honest and fair answer. The first step is to identify what the closet will be used for. ANSWER: Unlike ultrasound which uses heat, Cold Laser Therapy uses infrared light. When applied to an area of pain, the light helps remove the chemicals that are lingering around in the tissues or joints. This is known as the anti-inflammatory response. The same light will stimulate the healthy cells to produce more energy to allow for cartilage production, reduce inflammation, decrease pain and increase flexibility. It’s a win win! Follow us on

Q: I have heard about mediation, but don’t really know anything about it. How does it work?
QUESTION: What comprises ‘Companion Services’?
A: Mediation is a process whereby parties formulate their own solutions to their unique
circumstances, and implement their own wishes, not regimes imposed by a Judge. Generally speaking, it is a less expensive, faster, and more sustainable alternative to the court process, because the parties have greater control over the way their dispute is dealt with. This control often leads to expanded creativity. Engaging a skilled and certified mediator allows you to share the cost, and engage directly Kerry-Lynne Findlay with one another in your own future design.Mediation is helpful in many situations including family law, employment and workplace conflict, human rights claims, and estate issues. It is Lawyer informal and efficient. The mediator acts as a neutral third party to facilitate reaching a mutually acceptable agreement. The mediator supports effective communication, and assists you to identify your needs and interests, using proven problem solving techniques as you move toward resolution. By engaging a mediator who is also a lawyer, your mediator can also draft your mutually arrived at settlement into a legally binding format. Most litigation files, but certainly not all, settle – eventually. The court process can be very anxiety-producing and very costly. If your matter goes to trial, your disbursements for filing and courtroom fees,on top of your legal fees, can skyrocket. That money can be better spent moving forward with your lives,or helping your children to adjust to a new family reality.Try it.You’ll like it. It was a golden run in Germany for Megan and Nicole McNamara. The Tsawwassen twins captured the Ninth Annual World University Beach Volleyball Championships, held at historical Olympic Park in Munich. The event featured 32 teams, representing 29 countries. Seeded eighth, the UCLA standouts went undefeated in the tournament, defeating No. 3 seed Paula Soria/Belén Carro of Spain 2-1 (21-14, 18-21, 15-10) in the final. “It’s unbelievable – it feels so good,” said Nicole. “I think we were a little bit nervous at one point, but once we shook that off and got back playing really aggressive, it really took off for us.” They opened the championships with a straight-set win (21-17, 21-16) over the 25thseeded Nicole Dostalova/Anna Komarkova from the Czech Republic. Another straight-set win followed when they destroyed (215, 21-3) the 24th-seeded tandem of Thendiswa Bejancke Della/ Manana Innocent Mosai of South Africa in the quickest match of the tournament (19 minutes). The twins completed pool play with their third-consecutive straight-set win (21-19, 21-19) over ninth-seeded Zoé Vergé-Dépré/Esmée Böbner of Switzerland. It was another successful tournament run for Tsawwassen’s Megan and Nicole McNamara, this time representing Canada at the World University Beach Volleyball Championships in Munich. McNamras advanced with a second-round win over sixth-seeded Tereza Kotlasova/Daniela Resova of the Czech Republic in straight sets, 22-20, 21-14. In the third round, the SDSS grads picked up a quarter-final win over 32nd-seeded Claire Coppola/Kristen Nuss
from the United States (LSU) in a three-set thriller, rallying to win 17-21, 21-18, 15-13. In the semi-finals, the McNamaras had to come from behind again in three sets to defeat the same Swiss team. The three-time All-Americans,
set a UCLA record for wins in a season going 35-7 in 2018, all on court one. The 5-foot-9-inch sisters went 7-1 during postseason play this year including a 4-0 mark at the NCAA Championship in May, helping lead UCLA to its first-ever national title.

Amanda Minni will have another incentive when she is playing in the Canadian Junior Girls Golf Championships at the end of the month on her home course. The Beach Grove Golf Club product will be a member of the three-player provincial team after finishing third at last week’s B.C. Junior Girls Championships in Kimberley. Minni will be joined by Seymour’s Phoebe Yue and Marine Drive’s Leah John when the event tees off in Tsawwassen on July 30. Coming off her freshman season at Oregon State University, Minni finished two shots back of Yue who won in a playoff over John. She was in contention for her first-ever B.C. title right from the outset. Minni opened with a 71 and followed that up with rounds of 75 and 74 to enter the final 18 holes two strokes off the lead. She was sitting at 2-under par for her round

after 10 and a shot back when she hit her tee shot out of bounds on the short par-4 11th and recorded a double-bogey. The 18-year-old South Delta Secondary graduate rebounded with a birdie on the par-5 12th and her title hopes ended with an aggressive three-putt on 18 as she tried to join the playoff. “The landing spots on some of the fairways were about 15-yards wide and there were some blind spots too. It was a tough course,” said Minni. “We played it really short so I had the advantage (of being long off the tee) that way but I needed to sharpen up my wedge game more and that’s was lacking up there. “The 11th hole was drivable but it’s OB on the left and a hazard on the right. I hit the green on the second day so I had some confidence and was hitting the driver well too. I was trying to win the tournament. On 18, I had to send (my putt and give it a chance).” Prior to Junior Nationals at Beach Grove, Minni will be at Marine Drive for the Canadian Women’s Amateur, July 24-27.

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Richard Greville at his home in Delta. Richard was born in London, England and moved to Tsawwassen in 1976. Richard is survived by his wife, Tannis Boyko, his daughters Emma Claire and Charlotte, parents Shelagh and John, brothers Tony (Angela) and Michael (Ann), and extended family in England. Richard will be remembered for his friendly smile, his love of golf, cars, his dogs, the NFL, Oldies music and Elvis Presley. Richard was the proud owner of RCG Transport and covered many memorable miles in his trusty Peterbilt. He always enjoyed travelling to Hawaii and Las Vegas. Richard was a gentle man who was always there for anyone needing help or to provide a friendly ear to those seeking someone to talk to. He loved Caesar salad, steak and red wine. He will be missed by his many friends at the Rose & Crown Pub. A Celebration of Richard’s life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to BC Children’s Hospital.

In 1960 she married Dave and moved to Cooksville near Toronto where Debbie and Chris were born. There the family enjoyed camping and kayaking. In 1966 Elaine and Dave drove west with the 2 kids back to Vancouver and settled in Tsawwassen. Geoff and Lori came along soon afterwards. Family summers were enjoyed at Skaha Lake, Gambier Island, and Galiano Island (Phillimore Point). In September 1969 Elaine began an over 30 year volunteer career with Girl Guides of Canada. Starting as a Brownie leader, Elaine also served as a Guide leader and Pathfinder leader. Administrative positions at the Provincial and National levels then filled her calendar. She served as BC Provincial Commissioner from 1994 to 1998, and continued to volunteer beyond the end of her term. In 1997, Elaine and Dave built their dream home in North Saanich on Vancouver Island. Retired life included enjoying visits with family and friends, ballroom dancing, and cruising to various places around the world.

LITTLE, Dorothy Ann (nee Livsey) It is with deep sadness we announce that Dorothy passed away on June 22, 2018, at the age of 81. She is predeceased by her father Reginald Henry Livsey and mother Lorna Osborne Bailey. Dorothy was born in Vancouver; grew up in Kerrisdale and graduated from Magee High School. She was beautiful, smart, strong and independent; a great hostess and a wonderful mother. Dorothy is survived by her devoted daughter Tracie Little (Greg Fischer); grand-dogs Tilly, Bella and Angel; sister Roberta Emery; nieces Christine Emery (Mark) and Jennifer Emery (Matthew); nephew Michael Emery; grand-nieces Elizabeth and Alexandra Emery; cousins Grayson Osborne (Jan) and David Osborne (Roxanne) and Tracie’s father Lawrence Little (Dwayne). Should friends desire, donations to the Delta Community Animal Shelter, 7505 Hopcott Road, Delta, BC, V4G 1B7, appreciated. You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence at the family’s online obituary at www.myalternatives.ca Rest in Peace Momma

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
