Police disarm man at care home Officer suffers facial laceration but successfully de-escalates situation IAN JACQUES

A Delta police officer received injuries to his face while subduing a distraught family member at a Tsawwassen care home Monday night. Staff called police when a 60-year-old man became agitated after learning of his mother’s imminent passing.

“Police attended the care home and while speaking to the male, he engaged police in a sudden and unprovoked knife attack, causing a laceration to the face of one police officer,” said Delta police public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. “Officers backed away, and displayed both a pistol and a conducted energy weapon in an attempt to

subdue the male.” The injured officer continued attempts to communicate verbally with the man, resulting in a successful de-escalation with no use of force. The man was taken into custody and charges are pending for assault of a peace officer with a weapon, uttering threats, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and

possession of a prohibited weapon. The injured officer is expected to make a full recovery. According to DPD, in the past year the department has trained all of its officers in verbal communication skills to de-escalate agitated and potentially violent subjects. “Last night’s events were highly elevated and

dangerous, but through appropriate de-escalation it was peacefully resolved,” said deputy Chief Norm Lipinski. “We recognize that it is our duty to keep all members of the public safe, regardless of their actions, and this training served us well in this incident.” Police did not disclose the name of the care home.

Casino approved but wildcard still in the deck SANDOR GYARMATI

Cascades Casino Delta has received final approval from the city, but there could be another hurdle ahead. Delta council did the expected Monday and voted in favour of a $70-million casino/hotel complex Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Ltd. is scheduled to construct at the Delta Town & Country Inn site in Ladner. Mayor Lois Jackson along with councillors Bruce McDonald, Robert Campbell and Sylvia Bishop voted in favour of fourth reading, while Heather King and Jeannie Kanakos were opposed. It’s the same 4-2 vote that took place at third reading following a public hearing in May. Final approval is still required by the B.C. Lottery Corporation, which had to wait until Delta council gave its final approval before the application could move to that next step.

BCLC is “very supportive” of Gateway’s proposal, according to Delta staff. Among those to be notified of Delta council’s approval will be the City of Richmond, which has opposed the project. It remains to be seen if Richmond will initiate a non-binding dispute resolution process which would be overseen FILE IMAGE by BCLC. Lottery Corporation for allowing the process to move forward without Delta knowing everything outlined in the recently released independent report on money laundering at B.C. casinos by former RCMP deputy commissioner Peter German. Kanakos, who accused the city of a “rushed and flawed” process, later put forward a motion stating that due to “significant implications to public safety” raised in the German report, the attorney general and BCLC should suspend approving any new gaming facilities until all the report’s recommendations are implemented. Jackson said she expects all the recommendations by German to be implemented and “if not, we have a wonderful police department that will see they are.” Gateway plans to begin construction this fall. A grand opening is scheduled to take place in late 2020.

More words start with the letter ‘S’ than any other letter. But if you have a hearing loss it can feel as though those words have been removed from your hearing dictionary. You have probably also lost the ability to hear the letters ‘F-P-K & T’. With untreated hearing loss, you won’t be hearing those words either. Hearing aids from NexGen Hearing can put the words back and make hearing easier.

A lawsuit was filed last month in Vancouver Supreme Court over the alleged improper cutting of trees along Tsawwassen Beach Road. According to court documents, members of the Tsawwassen Beach Road Property Owners’ Association have filed a civil claim against Niceness Holdings Ltd., You Fei Xiang and John Doe. Court documents show the association members each own a residence on Tsawwassen Beach Road near 4th Avenue and are each partial owners of a segment of Tsawwassen Beach Road adjacent to their residences. The private road was lined by 26 large trees, which were visible from the property owned by Niceness and obscured the view of the ocean from that property. The lawsuit contends that in July of 2016 Xiang and Niceness instructed John Doe to trespass onto

The association contends the cutting was done without the express or implied permission of the association or any of its members, and without the express or implied permission of the City of Delta. According to an arborist report prepared by the association, one tree was removed, six were crowned and 20 were topped. As a result, the association and its members claim they have incurred losses, including a loss of property value, expenses to remediate the road and the surrounding area, loss of amenities and decreased stability of the adjacent English Bluff.

The association is seeking relief against the defendants that would include a determination of the damages and judgment in the amount of such damages, costs and any further relief the court deems just. “I expect at the very least it will be a few weeks before a response to civil claim will be filed in court,” said Graham Buchanan, the association’s lawyer. “This matter won’t actually be heard in court for quite a while. It will for sure be well in excess of a year, but possibly it could be resolved by agreement before then.” None of the allegations have yet to be proven in court.

Amanda knew it would be difficult to find a rental home for her father and three children, but she never dreamed it would be this hard. “After we were forced to move twice — the house was sold and in another instance the landlord was moving his son into the rental — it was exhausting trying to find something,” said Amanda. “Trying to find a place that is semiwheelchair accessible for my dad and my three kids, two of which have disabilities, and I’m a single parent on income assistance. It was to the point where people wouldn’t even show houses to me when I said single parent. I had to go back to my maiden name and be incredibly vague about myself and my dad living together in a house and make it seem we were a normal family of two adults and three kids.” After finally finding a place in South Delta, Amanda (who uses an online alias) decided to set up wtfvanrental on Instagram to document her struggles and to see if others shared her experiences. She set the page up in April and immediately started receiving respons-

She now has more than 2,200 followers on the page. “It’s been crazy. Every day I get messages from people that are dealing with the same things that I have,” she said. “I was looking for places from Vancouver to Chilliwack. I put out hundreds of applications out there. It was to the point that my dad might have had to sleep in the living room in order to find a house. My dad’s social worker where we used to live said that if we didn’t find a house that they would put my dad into a nursing home and put my kids into foster care until I found something.” She said at this time last year the family was liv-

ing in a six-bed, two-level house for $1,500 that was on a bus route, a block away from school and everything they needed was a SkyTrain ride away. Then they found a four-bedroom home for a bit more that did not have as much access to transit. Now in South Delta, they are paying well over $2,000. “I’m grateful to have found something, but it’s expensive. Transit is not great out here and now I have had to start all over again with our specialists and doctors because we can’t get out to see them as often as we could have before,” she said. Amanda said the stories she is seeing shared on the Instagram pages have been alarming.

With fire rating high, mayor wants eyes on bog SANDOR GYARMATI

Please keep an eye out for our bog. That’s the request Mayor Lois Jackson made this week to residents living near Burns Bog or have good sightlines to the environmentally sensitive wetland as the unremitting heat has Delta’s fire hazard rating at high. Jackson hopes people will call the fire department immediately at the first sign of smoke. A bog fire broke out last Friday in Richmond and continues to burn as firefighters from around the Lower Mainland, including Delta, battle it. Burns Bog has been the

Desirable spots come with fire dangers: chief IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

As wildfires continue rage in B.C.’s Interior, the City of Delta is looking to prepare residents should a major fire break out here. This week Delta fire Chief Paul Scholfield wrote a letter to residents who have a home within or adjacent to one of the many naturally vegetated areas in the city. “We call such areas the wildland-urban interface, or interface for short,” said Scholfield. “Forested and wildland areas are highly desirable places to live, but what makes them so attractive can also make them hazardous. While vegetation is an amenity for residents, it can also be a source of fuel for an interface fire.” Scholfield points out that Delta is not immune to wildfire. “The 2016 Burns Bog fire was a stark reminder of the wildfire risk that exists within our city,” he said. “As your fire chief, I believe it is important to ensure that the public is aware of this risk and given the necessary information needed to take action.” Residents are encouraged to protect their homes from an interface fire by ensuring yards are free of dry grass clippings, fallen branches, compost heaps and needles that could easily ignite. All of this yard material should be put out to the curb for removal and not dumped into ravines or forests where it contributes to the build-up of fuel for forest fires.

site of several serious fires, which can burn underground for months in the methane-rich peat. The last big, stubborn wildfire occurred in July of 2016. It started in an unforested area on the west side of the bog, between 76th and 80th streets, where several transmission and repeating towers for radio stations are located. It destroyed at least one of the towers, knocking a radio station off the air. Firefighters from across the Lower Mainland and several air tankers and helicopters were mobilized and battled the blaze which quickly grew, eventually reaching almost 80 hectares in size.

When the wind changed direction, the fire jumped the highway, forcing the evacuation of the Tilbury Industrial Park and closure of Highway 17 between Highway 99 and Nordel Way. The Delta Fire Department several years ago developed the Burns Bog Fire Management Plan, aimed at helping fire crews battle different types of blazes that can occur in the unique and sometimes treacherous ecosystem. Delta has a key role in maintaining and improving water levels in the bog, which is fed entirely from precipitation and does not get any water from rivers, so the wetland doesn’t dry up.

The last major fire in Burns Bog took place in the summer of 2016.

e’re in a buyer’s market, which should be good news for anyone looking to buy a home, unless, of course, you don’t have one to sell. At the start of this week, I counted 27 homes in Ladner listed for under $1 million and another 20 being marketed for less than $1.1 million, while Tsawwassen had eight under the $1-million mark and another dozen below $1.1 million. Given it wasn’t that long ago you were hard pressed to find anything under seven digits, the fact you’ve got some choice in that price range in South Delta would rightly suggest it’s a good time for buyers. This modest shift towards purchasers will certainly be helpful, but it’s difficult to buy the notion we’re somehow in a buyer’s market when so many wouldbe buyers are still being left on the sidelines thanks to a super-charged real estate market in Greater Vancouver. The idea of anyone jumping straight into a single-family home in South Delta has been laughable for quite a few years now, but just for some perspective, if you were able to save $100,000 for a down payment on a million-dollar home, you’d need an annual income in the neighbourhood of $170,000 to handle the mortgage payments on one of the least expensive places in town. Let’s cut that figure in half and say you’ve got $500,000 to spend on somewhere to live in South Delta. Well, that gives you a choice of exactly one townhouse, but on the bright side, there are 10 condos, and the best news is you only need to be making about $85,000 a year to qualify for what’s one of the cheapest pieces of real estate available. It’s hard to comprehend for those who got into the market decades ago, but there are many gainfully employed people out there who will never own a place of their own and many others that do own property but look at a single-family home as little more than a pipe dream. A slight downward turn has offered a bit of help in that regard, perhaps making the jump from multifamily to single-family seem a little more possible, but the underlying challenges remain. When you’re talking Greater Vancouver housing, all things are relative, from so-called bargains to what are passed off as affordable payments. The same applies to a buyer’s market.

As Southlands progresses, variances start to appear

I

t’s been a long time since the Southlands was on the radar. Things have really ramped up in the past months, with a steady stream of tandem dump trucks rumbling through town and significant road disruption along Boundary Bay Road. We knew it was coming since the project was approved a few years back. It took a while to get started, but things are in full swing now. Like any major project, there will be requests for changes along the way. Tsawwassen Springs made some big changes. Marina Gardens went through a comprehensive redesign, with public input and presentations made along the way. Now it’s the Southlands turn. I thought the plan was pretty well set — houses, a small commercial area with a market, a few small shops and a nice walking space. Commercial use on ground floor, residential above. That was until I received a notice last week for public input on a “proposed text amendment” to “allow freestanding commercial buildings as a principal use and to allow a broader range of commercial uses such as brewery, distillery, and winery for the subject properties.” I looked around a bit for more information about it. A local brewer was looking at a small brewery operation and restaurant.

Community Comment BRAD SHERWIN

I thought it was an interesting idea — use the farmland to grow the ingredients and brew them close by. Then I flipped the page and saw the map. The proposed change is in the middle of the new residential area, very close to the existing properties in Boundary Bay. It seems a bit strange to put a brewery in the middle of a residential area. On the edge of the development near the farmland maybe, but across the street from a house, and almost within sight of a school? Would it make sense if a brewery was built in place of a hydro line house? Or as part of the redevelopment of the Town Centre Mall? I don’t think anyone envisioned more than houses and small shops on the Southlands initially. A change for a brewery seems like a bit much. It’s a long way from the original plan that was presented, that most of the community opposed in the first

place. I’ve got nothing against the brewer, who is a respected, valued business in our community. But I think we have to be careful how far the envelope is pushed with this development. The process to get to an approval was long and contentious. The feedback for on the project was significant (I read all the letters and comments made available through the application process). The public hearing was long, and shut down before everyone had spoken. The opposition to this development was extensive. And now, the changes being proposed are not in keeping with the original vision for the land. The decision on this proposal will not come before the current council, so it may become an election issue — how much variation should be allowed on this development? Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe people will want this. All I know is the biggest compromise in Delta’s recent history is being changed further. I wonder what would have happened if this was part of the original proposal? RETIREMENT. LIVING!

Thieves stoop low to steal from community garden

Editor: The Ladner Community Garden located on Holly Park Drive in East Ladner has been in existence for a number of years. Local people with a yen to grow their own vegetables are able to satisfy their desire by joining the Ladner Community Garden Society. For a nominal fee you will be allocated a fourfoot-by-10-foot allotment in which you can cultivate your own vegetables for your use or to share with friends. One of the mandates of our society is to allocate a number of beds in which crops are grown to donate to a worthy charitable cause. This year allotments have been planted with carrots, beets, potatoes and squash which, when harvested, will be donated to All Saints Anglican Church to assist with its monthly free community meal.

The members do an incredible amount of volunteer work to keep the gardens looking nice and many complimentary comments have been received from passing pedestrians. In recent weeks, with crops coming into their full abundance, there has been theft of some vegetables from some of the members’ allotments. In one instance, a couple was spotted at 6 a.m. walking away with two bags full of vegetables. Not only is this disappointing for the individuals whose allotments have been raided but this is stealing in one of its lowest forms. If people are that desperate, then approach one of the members and ask for a donation which, I am sure, will gladly be done – but don’t steal. The police and some nearby neighbours have been notified of these thefts and random surveil-

lance will occur. To those who are stealing our vegetables and flowers, if you feel a real need to have fresh vegetables on a regular basis without having to go to the store, then make an application to join the society, where you will be welcome. You will then have abundant fresh vegetables of your own choosing as well as the satisfaction of having grown them yourself. Many of our members are very knowledgeable and are always willing to pass on their wisdom and experiences. Further information on the Ladner Community Garden Society can be obtained by phoning 604946-8308. West Coast Seeds on Elliott Street will also be able to assist. David Batchelor Hon. Secretary Ladner Community Garden Society

Casino not a welcome addition

Editor: Re: Can’t find the crime, Murphy’s Law, July 26 First of all, big congratulations on the award for best community newspaper in Canada. As an avid reader of the Optimist, I am very happy. As a resident of a smaller community, I feel very fortunate to have a paper that covers our local government affairs, local stories, children’s sports, etc. On another topic, I have to disagree with the editorial by Ted Murphy after his visits to some Alberta casinos. The fact he didn’t “see” any crimes

being committed isn’t exactly surprising given money launderers do not announce to the crowd what they’re doing. Also, Alberta is not Metro Vancouver, and I don’t mean that as a compliment to Vancouver. The Lower Mainland is a gateway to and from Asia, and the majority of the money launderers, drug dealers, loan sharks, etc. who use Vancouver area casinos for nefarious purposes do seem to be from Asia. I agree that most people at a casino aren’t there for criminal purposes. It doesn’t appeal to me but I

understand many people enjoy a bit of gambling. The fact is that Lower Mainland casinos are a hub for criminals and their activities. Many residents voiced and wrote their opposition to a casino coming to Ladner because of all the documented crime, but mayor and council seemed to be won over by the Gateway and BCLC reps and their promises of money. I don’t think it will be the end of the world but I certainly don’t see it as positive addition to our community. M. Cheney

Nothing wrong with pipeline challenge

Editor: Re: Delta has been forgotten by NDP gov’t, MLA says, MLA’s Report, July 26 I am no lover of the NDP. I was disgusted by its decisions to carry on with tragically expensive BC Liberal boondoggles such as the LNG subsidies and the Site C Dam. However, I would not go as far as

our MLA did by stating the federal Liberals’ decision to purchase Kinder Morgan pipeline was the result of “the NDP government’s obstruction of the rule of law.” That is a very serious allegation to make without any supporting facts. I assume he is simply repeating the fed-

eral Liberals’ propaganda designed to manipulate public opinion. Our provincial government has, in fact, respected the rule of law and is striving to fulfill voters’ wishes to protect our coast through the court system. There is nothing illegal about a legal challenge. Larry Colero

Letter opposing electoral change has opposite effect Editor: Re: Only political losers demand switch, letter to the editor, July 26 I’ve never been a big

fan of proportional representation but reading SM Cruickshank’s Trumpian sounding letter, spouting support for Doug Ford

and slamming local and Ontario “socialists,” has made me reconsider. I’m voting yes this time. P. Webb

Another slate has entered the race for seats on the Delta school board. Delta Voices, which consists of incumbent trustee Rhiannon Bennett and newcomers Andrea Hilder and Mita Naidu, made a formal announcement Monday morning. Hilder is an education assistant while Naidu is director of development and communications at WISH drop-in-centre in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. “We have been working on this for a couple of months now,” said Bennett. “Andrea and I used to work together back in the day and mutual contacts connected me with Mita. What really excited me in having Andrea and Mita join me is because their voices and perspectives are key things that are currently missing on the board. “The Delta board of education has been very successful in making strides to improve learning experiences for our students but I think adding the voice of an education assistant and a South Asian woman are key voices that are missing on the board.” Some of the slate’s goals include improving playgrounds and tracks, connecting families, students and educators, and putting equity into practice. “We are just taking some small steps to get out

there, but people are excited to have more women and those perspectives on the board,” Bennett said. “I’m proud of the things we have been working on in this term, but I really feel I’m just getting started. The learning curve of being a first-term trustee, having to learn all the process and the internal workings of the district — things you really don’t know until you are at the table, so it’s taken me some time to see where I can affect some change. The support of Andrea and Mita can help make those changes.” Other school trustee candidates already declared include current board chair Laura Dixon, incumbent trustee Nick Kanakos and newcomer Joe Muego, who are all running on the Independents Working for You slate. Incumbent trustee Bruce Reid is running again on the Kids Matter ticket with newcomers Randy Anderson-Fennell and Victor Espinoza. Incumbent Val Windsor has confirmed she’ll be running again as an independent, while long-time trustee Dale Saip hasn’t announced his intentions. He ran in the last election on a REAL Delta ticket that included fellow trustee Fabian Milat, who announced he won’t be seeking re-election. The deadline for candidates to file nomination paperwork is Sept. 14. The election is Oct. 20.

Mayoral candidate Sylvia Bishop has the Kids Matter school board slate endorsement of one of her campaign pledges. In a joint news conference at the George Mackie Library in North Delta last Friday, Bishop announced Kids Matter supports Team Delta’s nine-point Code of Ethical Conduct. Bishop’s slate introduced the code last month in what she called a proactive move designed to promote ethical conduct

and practices during the campaign. “I was very pleasantly surprised when the Kids Matter candidates reached out to me and asked if they could join in supporting our initiative,” said Bishop, a two-term councillor. Fellow councillor Robert Campbell as well as newcomers Joan Hansen, Kim Kendall and Simran Walia are on Bishop’s Team Delta slate. Incumbent Bruce Reid and newcomers Randy Anderson-Fennell and Victor Espinoza are on the Kids Matter slate.

Back to school ads a real summer buzzkill

Living Matters

BARBARA GUNN

Sheesh. It’s only the beginning of August, and retailers everywhere want the world to be thinking

about back to school. Come on. If I was a kid, I’d be inclined to be saying: Wait a minute! The summer’s only halfway through! I still have time to work in 12 lemonade stands, 17 games of kick the can, 24 double-scoop ice cream cones and 49 runs through the sprinkler! Forget the backpacks, the binders and the pencil crayons, already. Yet the flyers want parents everywhere to get back into

sitting-behind-the-desk mode, and they’ve been pushing that since, well, almost the day after the schools were closed in June. Talk about a summer buzzkill. When I had schoolaged kids at home — and yes, that was a while ago — I was not inclined to take them for their backto-school haircuts right around now. I was not about to take them to get

their back-to-school runners. For one thing, their hair would have been shaggy by the day after Labour Day. And the last thing they would have wanted on their feet were shoes. A new pencil case? They’d have no use for that at the beginning of August — unless it was to store their pretty shells and pebbles from the beach. A new lunch kit? Not at all necessary, not when

you’re throwing open the refrigerator door, grabbing a handful of cherries and a glass of lemonade and calling that lunch. Still, the retailers try, just as they’ll try to have us thinking about mistletoe and candy canes before the beginning of October. Buy your glue sticks, they’re saying. Get your exercise books and your pencils and erasers. All that can wait. The kids of summer have

better things to do than decide whether next year’s binders will be blue or yellow or green. There are balls still to bat. There are games of hide and seek to be played and water parks to be explored and marshmallows to be roasted. The science fairs and the socials projects? They’ll have their day, but not quite yet. Half of summer may be gone, but half of it’s to come.

Pet Week of the

Say hello to Pita

“Pita” is a four year old female Chihuahua mix weighing around 14lbs. She came to us from our sister California rescue, Eastwood Ranch Foundation, after she couldn’t find a home locally. Her foster family says: Pita gets along well with almost all dogs! She does not like young puppies who do not have manners yet (she lets you know by barking at them if they rush at her). Other than that, she does not discriminate! Pita loves big and small dogs and loves to wrestle with her 75 lbs foster brother. She has quickly made herself at home and shows no signs of being nervous at home. Lupita loves all people, but can get scared and intimidated when strange big, tall men walk towards her outside. She is a big time snuggler! If you are sitting down, you can surely expect this sweet girl to hop into your lap for cuddles and kisses. She is the perfect mix between active and cuddly! She can walk for hours without losing energy, but takes your cue if you’d like quiet time. She loves to play with balls and can carry large bones around, which is quite a sight to see! She rarely barks and feels safe in her crate, often putting herself to sleep when she knows it’s time for us to go to work. She should be put in her crate when left alone as she resorts to her survival instincts and goes digging for garbage. She will not do this if anyone is home and likes to be right by your side when you’re around. She is such an easy-going, wonderful dog and we would be thrilled to babysit for her forever family any time!! As with all our dogs, Pita is spayed and up to date on all shots and vaccines. If you are interested in this sweet girl, please email us at pbandchi@gmail.com

A community golf day to benefit Reach Child and Youth Development Society is planned for Saturday, Aug. 11 at The Links at Hampton Cove in Ladner. The Hampton Cove Community Open encourages the community to come together for summer fun and raise awareness and funds for local children and youth with special needs at Reach. Legion donation funds vein viewer

Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation recently received a gift of $11,000 from the Tsawwassen Legion that will go towards purchasing a vein viewer and an IV training kit for the hospital’s medical unit. A vein viewer is a handheld vein illuminator that helps find veins for intravenous device insertion – also known as an IV start. IV starts can be more challenging with older adult

patients on the medical floor due to age-related changes in skin and veins. The Tsawwassen Legion is a longtime supporter of the foundation. Since 1995, it has contributed more than $157,000 towards priority equipment needs at Delta Hospital. “We are so privileged to once again be supported by Legion Branch 289,” says Angela Turner, the foundation’s major giving

manager. For the Tsawwassen Legion, Delta Hospital is a great cause close to home for many of its members. “Delta Hospital has supported so many in our community over the years,” says Tsawwassen Legion president Gary Bain. “We are only too happy to contribute these essential items that have the capacity to help many of Delta residents now and into the future.”

Buckle up — there is a lot of uncertainty in the world today. There is political uncertainty with the rest of North America facing elections this year, with or without Russian interference; the ongoing tragedy of immigrant family separations; and the constant bombardment of terms like chaos, tariffs, collusion, trade war, witch hunt and fake news. There is the increasing uncertainty of violence in our cities with attacks happening so frequently that we almost become numb to them. There is economic uncertainty with trade disputes, retaliatory tariffs and stock markets that

Minister’s Minute

fluctuate wildly in reaction to the latest tweets. And even the weather keeps us on edge with volcanoes, floods and wildfires around the world and in our own back yard. It’s all enough to bring

us to despair. But there is hope. In all the uncertainty of life, there is one true security. The prophet Isaiah wrote (during a very turbulent period in his nation’s history) about how we can handle times of drastic uncertainty: You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD GOD is the eternal Rock. (Isaiah 26:3– 4, NLT) There is a certainty in an uncertain world that is Rock solid. If we keep our attention on him, we can focus on certainty rather than chaos. You can contact Mike at mike@ladnerbaptist.ca.

Music Maker to be honoured Curt Jantzen to receive Sun Festival Mentor of the Arts Award this weekend IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

A mentor, teacher and music enthusiast, Curt Jantzen’s impact on the musical and cultural scene in South Delta is quite impressive. After having shared his passion for music with adults and students for nearly four decades, Jantzen is the 2018 recipient of the Tsawwassen Sun Festival Mentor of the Arts Award. Dedicated to an individual who has devoted himself or herself to making an impact in the Tsawwassen arts community, the award has been presented annually since 2009. “Curt has been in the community for many, many years and has contributed so much to music and the arts in Delta. He is a very worthy recipient,” said Sun Festival events coordinator Elaine Campbell. Jantzen said he was very happy when he learned about the award. “It’s a great honour for sure, but I must say that all my band members deserve the credit. I wouldn’t be here without them.” Jantzen was drawn to music from an early age, taking piano lessons at five and then learning more instruments in school, including violin and clarinet. Although born in Canada, his parents moved to Los Angeles for six years in 1957, and it

Curt Jantzen is the 2018 recipient of the Tsawwassen Sun Festival Mentor of the Arts Award. was at Westchester high school where his interest in band music began to form as a member of the marching band, concert band, choir and symphony orchestra. Back in Canada, he decided to pursue a teaching career, graduating from UBC in 1970. Looking for a better place to raise his three sons, Jantzen moved to Delta in 1980. He founded the Delta Music Makers, made up entirely of local musicians. For the past 35 years, the

Music Makers have been playing and touring both locally and abroad. “What impressed me is that I have had some of the same people in the group for 35 years — it’s like a career for some people,” he said. Despite retiring as fine arts coordinator for the Surrey School District in 2003, he continues to stay busy as conductor for the Delta Music Makers, a teacher for an after school music program at Hawthorne Elementary in Ladner and is one of the

coordinators of Ladner Bandfest. “The nice thing about the people that I work with is that they have a longterm commitment. People seem to enjoy doing the musical things that I’m involved in,” Jantzen said. “My first motivation is my wife Jhandie. If she didn’t support everything that I was doing and participating then none of this would have happened.” He said South Delta is a wonderful community for music. “There is definitely a

personal satisfaction of conducting a band that has worked really hard on a set of music. You are performing in front of an appreciative audience — it’s a thrill of a lifetime,” he said. “The same goes with the young students that we teach. Sometimes we have a concert of 100 kids at the end of the year all playing together – it’s a pretty magical moment.” Jantzen will receive the award on Aug. 6 on the main stage. — With files from Adrian MacNair

Delta Play Day set to expand in its second year

Delta, it’s time to play. Delta Gymnastics, Delta Kids and the City of Delta are inviting the community to Delta Play Day, a free indoor and outdoor event on Sunday, Aug. 12. Set to run from noon to 4 p.m., Delta Play Day has been designed to bring families together in a lively and entertaining atmosphere. “Last year we launched this event as we celebrated Canada’s 150 and our goal was to create an exciting active event for our community’s children and youth,” says Diane Steiner, Delta Gymnastics com-

munity program coordinator and Delta Play Day committee member. “This year, we are very excited to combine our efforts and expand the scope of our plans by partnering with Delta Kids and the City of Delta and with support of United Way to deliver a much larger event.” Delta Gymnastics, which will anchor the event, is located next to the Ladner Leisure Centre. “We are lucky to have a perfect location to hold this type of community festival,” says Steiner. “It allows all Delta Play Day partners the space that

provides many options to explore movement in an enjoyable and safe way.” There will be many “try it” activities delivered in mini sessions of about 30 minutes to allow variety and exploration that should have everyone SUBMITTED PHOTO sweating and Youngsters can try out many smiling. activities during Delta Play Day. When temperatures soaring, we’re almost all dehydrated

Well on Your Way P.J. WREN

Drinking water is vital for good health. We could last weeks without food, but we would only last several days without water. The basic physiology of the human body tells us why this is so. Depending on a person’s body fat content, the body will contain anywhere from 45 per cent water in a very obese individual to 70 per cent in a very lean individual (this is because muscles store more water). Water is found in all parts of the body and is essential for a majority of our body’s functions. From

the brain to the heart to the muscles, they all require us to be properly hydrated. Fluids are also needed to carry nutrients to our cells, flush out bacteria from our bladder and prevent constipation. But in the 24 years of being in the fitness industry, there is one truth that I know — most of us are walking around dehydrated. Now add the excessive heat that we have been experiencing recently and that “most of us” now jumps up to pretty much all of us. Heat and dehydration affect people in different ways too. For instance, children are more susceptible to heat and dehydration. Because a child’s body surface area makes up a much greater proportion of their overall weight than an adult’s, children face a much greater risk of dehydration and heatrelated illness. Athletes, and exercisers who train in the sun,

also need to drink more to match the loss of fluids caused by their activities and excessive sweating. Older adults need to pay attention to their water intake. This can become a real health issue too, especially if they’re on a medication that may cause fluid loss, such as a diuretic. Outdoor workers such as landscapers, construction crews, police officers and postal employees also need to keep their water bottles handy. These people often have little time for bathroom breaks, so in turn they avoid drinking the proper amount of fluids. Warning signs of dehydration include weakness, low blood pressure, dizziness, confusion or urine that’s dark in colour. To ward off dehydration, experts recommend healthy people get 30 to 50 ounces of water per day (about 1 to 1.5 litres). We can consume water through the foods we eat as well. Fruit and vegetables consist of 80 to 95 per

cent water. Meat, depending on how it is cooked, contains 45 to 75 per cent water, and even pastas and dry cereals contain about three to five per cent water. But for the rest of our daily water requirements, we need to simply turn on the tap and fill’er up. Another popular way to hydrate while exercising is to drink a sports drink or a vitamin water. I am not a fan of either, due to the excessive sugar in these products. Instead, I recommend to my clients an electrolyte powder to mix in their water bottles. Some popular brands are Vega, Nuun, Gu and Ultima. You can also make your own electrolyte drink using: one part lemon juice, two parts orange juice, two parts coconut water, six parts water, pinch of unrefined sea salt and a spoon of raw honey. Birds and Byways now on view at Gallery 1710

Guild issues birding challenge to members LAUREL JOHNSON

Optimist contributor

The South Delta Artists Guild issued a challenge to its members to paint birds and bird habitat to mark an international gathering of bird fanciers taking place in Vancouver later this month. The result is Birds and Byways, which is on view at Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen until Aug. 26. Artists not only painted local birds but exotic ones found on other continents, while the byways part of the equation involved observations, wanderings and places where we are likely to observe birds, nesting sites and note their lovely songs. Cheryl Palmer did a painting of Ladner Slough, a sure place to find gulls, red-winged blackbirds and, of course, great blue herons, while Jan Rankin found Burns Bog an excellent place to observe friendly wildlife. Paintings of crows emphasize their hunting skills and their cheeky ability to steal a cherry. Lea Price’s offering captures their personality, while Gillian Olson’s Pecking Order shows a

Visitors will also find owls, eagles, finches, hummingbirds, wood ducks, woodpeckers, mallards, quails and the humble seagull among paintings at the show. Children can learn about and engage with nature this summer through day camps hosted by the Burns Bog Conservation Society. The Burns Bog Conservation Society has been running its summer camp programs since 1999. “While every day camp has a slightly different theme, there is a strong emphasis on wetland stewardship, especially with regards to Burns Bog, but also the importance of outside play and getting kids to learn about the importance of the resource right in their own backyard,” said camp coordinator Mark Robertson. “It’s one thing for us to talk about all the important ecosystem services Burns Bog provides, but it’s a whole other thing for kids to actually get to experience the bog first hand and they get to

University hearing study seeks participants.

Connect Hearing, with hearing researcher Professor Kathy Pichora-Fuller at the University of Toronto, seeks participants who are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids for a hearing study investigating factors that can influence better hearing. All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge and if appropriate, the clinician may discuss hearing rehabilitation options including hearing aids. Qualifying participants may also receive a demo of the latest hearing technology. The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve life-changing hearing healthcare across Canada. Why participate in the hearing study? Hearing problems typically result from damage to the ear and researchers have spent decades trying to understand the biology behind hearing loss. More importantly, researchers now realize the need to better understand how hearing

loss affects your everyday life*. In this new hearing study, Professor Pichora-Fuller and her team are trying to find out how people learn to live with hearing loss and how new solutions could help these people take action sooner and live life more fully. It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss1, but most do not seek treatment right away. In fact, the average person with hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help2. This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people often find they can “get by” without help, however as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. For some people this loss of clarity is only a problem at noisy restaurants or in the car, but for others it makes listening a struggle throughout the entire day. By studying people who have difficulty hearing in noise or with television, we hope to identify key factors impacting these difficulties and further understand their influence on the treatment process.

If you are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids, you can register to be a part of this new hearing study† by calling: 1.888.242.4892 or visiting connecthearing.ca/hearing-study.

Tsawwassen Sun Festival

Fest offers four days of long weekend fun

46th annual summertime celebration features parade, park activities, tournaments and more The 46th annual Tsawwassen Sun Festival — set for Aug. 3 to 6 — has a little something for everyone. This year’s theme is Farm to Table and is a chance for Delta to honour its agricultural roots. “Agriculture is so prominent in our community,” says event coordinator Elaine Campbell. “Farm to Table is about bringing our agricultural background into our festival.” The four-day event kicks off Friday night with the antique fair, which runs Friday and Saturday at the South Delta Recreation Centre. Saturday features the start of the volleyball and softball tournaments, a skateboard competition, music and food at Winskill Park and bingo at KinVillage. Sunday’s highlights include the lawn bowling competition at the Tsawwassen Lawn Bowling Club, entertainment and food at Winskill

Grove Elementary. Grease will be shown on the big screen at 8 p.m., but activi-

ties in the park start at 6:30 p.m. Monday, the final day of

festival, is one not to miss. The day kicks off with a pancake breakfast, fol-

lowed by the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen Parade down 56th Street, the classic car show and loads of entertainment, food, vendors and activities in Winskill Park. “It’s hard to say what are the key events because there are so many events going on, but the antique fair, car show and parade are certainly events not to miss,” says Campbell. “All the events at Winskill, plus all the main stage events, marketplace and vendors — there are lots of things for everyone to do.” As with many events of this size, a dedicated group of volunteers is needed to make sure everything goes off without a hitch. Campbell says more volunteers are needed. Those wishing to learn more can email coordinator.tsf@ gmail.com. “It’s a great four days of fun for the whole family. We are looking forward to a great event,” adds Campbell.

Parade to march down 56th Street on Monday

There is nothing quite like a parade — the colourful floats, the marching bands, clowns and street performers. The pride of this year’s Sun Festival is the annual Rotary Parade, which begins at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 6. The parade will start at

the corner of 16th Avenue and head south on 56th Street to Winskill Park. Sponsored by dozens of companies and featuring hundreds of local individuals, clubs and businesses, the parade certainly brings together the feeling of community and the spirit of Sun Festival.

Marching bands will be among the entries in Monday’s Rotary Parade.

New dates for antique fair The 40th annual antique fair has a slightly different look at this year’s Sun Festival. In order to maximize the experience for vendors both at the fair and the marketplace at Winskill Park, antique fair organizers have shifted the dates to Friday and Saturday. The show at the South Delta Recreation Centre runs on Friday, Aug. 3 from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The antique fair is a

must for patrons looking for great classic furniture, trinkets jewelry, vintage clothing and paraphernalia. Admission is $20 for the early bird event on Friday ($10 with coupon available at https://sunfestival.ca) and $5 on Saturday. There will also be lots of door prizes up for grabs for visitors. Booth rentals are available by emailing event organizer Malcolm Johnston at: dmalcolmjohnston@gmail.com.

Tournaments galore at Sun Fest

There will be no shortage of friendly competition at this year’s Sun Festival: Slo-pitch tournament The slo-pitch tournament consists of 20 teams and runs for three days at the Winskill Park diamonds. Following round robin play on Saturday and Sunday, the top three teams from divisions one and two and the top two teams from division three

Earthwise offers summer workshops for youth

Earthwise Society is introducing a summer program for youth that explores our connection to nature through a series of interactive workshops at the Earthwise Garden in Tsawwassen. The program uses a “by youth and for youth” approach that involves young people in the design and delivery of the workshops and encourages self-exploration and discovery. The program begins on Monday, Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. with Weave with Nature, a hands-on workshop that explores the art of tapestry weaving using natural, found materials. Weave with Nature combines individuals’ unique creativity with indigenous knowledge sharing and tradition. Participants will explore native plants and their traditional uses and learn about Coast Salish weaving history before creating an individual weaving project to take home. On Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 6 p.m., Nature Mandalas explores the connections between spirituality, nature and self-expression. The workshop will move from a guided evening meditation in the garden to the creation of individual or group mandalas and personal reflection. The series will wind up on Saturday, Aug. 18 at 10 a.m. with a Garden Bioblitz to explore the incredible biodiversity that can be found in our gardens, and how building green spaces is essential in supporting urban biodiversity. The workshop will focus on garden exploration, discovery and documentation, with nature experts on hand to answer questions and offer guidance. At the end of the day, participants will take part in a Bioblitz show-and-tell to share their learning and discoveries. Participants will be asked to share ideas for possible future projects that could be implemented to build on the discoveries of the day. The workshop series design has been facilitated with the help of Liz McKenna, an expressive therapist, artist and educator who works in the Delta School District. McKenna sees adolescence as an extraordinary time in a young person’s life and believes

the Earthwise series is an innovative way for young people to make connections between nature, art and self-discovery. “Youth thrive on con-

nection,” says McKenna. She says the emphasis for these workshops will be on skill facilitation, community building, learning and having fun.

The program is open to youth 14 and older who enjoy nature and who would like to explore their creativity and self-expression through art while

learning a little bit more about themselves along the way. Workshops are two to three hours long and will take place at the Earthwise

Garden, 6400-3rd Ave. To register, or for more information about the workshops, contact 604946-9828 or info@earthwisesociety.bc.ca.

Local associations have come together to establish college prep program IAN JACQUES

As the Delta Tigers prepare to defend their provincial championship this weekend in Chilliwack, the organization also has an eye to the future. Earlier this summer the Tsawwassen and Ladner baseball associations came together to establish a new college prep program for the 2019 season. Tigers skipper Cam Frick will coach the team along with his current duties with the Bantam Tigers. Wayne Laviolette, acting president of the Tsawwassen Amateur Baseball Association, was instrumental in driving their association towards the college prep program. “The Delta Tigers program has grown over the past five years and in our eyes has been a success,” said Laviolette. “We have been working with the Peewee-aged players along with the Bantamaged players and felt it was a natural progression to move the program into the Midget-age group. Our goal is to offer an alternative option to players looking for high performance baseball at the 18U age group.” Frick said adding the

Tigers head coach Cam Frick (centre) is leading the tier one team to the provincial championships this weekend in Chilliwack. college prep program allows kids at the Midget level a chance to play at

the highest level of baseball in the province. “The players we are

developing, when they reach the Midget level, they leave to go play else-

where like Langley and the North Shore,” said Frick. “Now they can play in a real grassroots, high level baseball program right here at home.” Frick said many current and former Tigers have expressed excitement about the program. As for the upcoming provincials, Frick is confident that both Tigers’ squads will have a great weekend. The 15U AAA tier one team finished with a 25-3 record and won the regular season pennant while the tier two squad finished 16-12, good for third place and a spot in the provincials. “There is a great group of guys on the tier two team. They were in a very competitive division, but they played very well,” said Frick. “They have a great, deep pitching staff that most tier one teams don’t have. For them it will be making sure that the offence clicks at the right time.” As for the tier one Tigers, Frick said health will be a key factor. “The last month or so we have battled through some injuries. With 12 players on the team, every single player plays a key role.”

The Ladner Pioneers have punched their ticket to the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association final and hopefully a return trip to the President’s Cup national championship. The Pioneers completed a three-game sweep of the Coquitlam Adanacs with a 12-7 win Monday night at the Ladner Leisure Centre. Ladner led from start to

finish, dominating in every facet of the game. Cody Nass led the scoring attack with three goals and two assists, while Peter McFetridge, Nathan Clare, Dylan Lacroix and Mike Berekoff all added two goals apiece. Dan McDermott rounded out the scoring. Spencer Bromley added five assists. Making his second start of the series, Broadie MacDonald was solid in

net, making 24 saves. Rob Cook took over in the third period and made nine saves as the Pioneers outshot the Adanacs 50-40. In game two Saturday night in Coquitlam, Ladner pulled out an 11-10 win. Nine different Pioneers scored with Garrett Lewis and Bromley each notching a pair. Zack Wickett was outstanding in net making 56 saves as Ladner outshot

Coquitlam 69-66. Ladner will now await the winner of the other semi-final series between Nanaimo and Victoria. Nanaimo is the host for the President’s Cup, so if they win Ladner would clinch a berth regardless of the outcome of the league championship series. If Victoria wins, then Ladner knows it still has some work ahead. “It’s good to get that series over with,” said

Pioneers head coach Ross Frehlick. “I think our toughest game was game two in Coquitlam. We had a big lead and they came back and almost tied it up, so that was their shot. I think they knew coming into our barn Monday night that they were done. We just dominated them.” The league final will start next Wednesday either in Nanaimo or in North Delta at Sungod Arena against Victoria.

Three Islanders named to Team Canada Haiden Dickson, Brendan Szabo and Brody Harris to play in World Junior Lacrosse Championship IAN JACQUES

Three lacrosse players from Delta will be trading in their Islanders colours for the red and white of Team Canada. Haiden Dickson, Brendan Szabo and Brody Harris have all been named to the Team Canada squad for the 2018 IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championship, which will be held Aug. 8 to 12 at SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon. The tournament is made up of three teams — Canada, U.S. and Iroquois — which will play a round robin format with the top two teams advancing to the championship game. Canada West won the tournament beating Canada Ontario in the final in 2015 with Iroquois West beat Canada East in the final in 2016. as Canada West, so that was our first introduction to Brody and his abilities,” said Fox. “This year I was able to go and watch all three of them play,” said Fox. “We

scout players and we certainly look at their stats, but we also look at character because that goes a long way in a quick tournament like this. These guys have that and all the

tangibles we were looking for.” Fox said Szabo is not necessarily a traditional stay-at-home defencemen, but he plays a gritty style of defence.

“He is so smart moving the ball up the floor, so it’s vital to have transition players and specifically defensive players that know how to get into the passing lanes, know how to push the ball up the floor and Brendan provides us that,” said Fox. “Haiden is a goal scorer. He got it done, again, no disrespect to the Islanders, on a team that really didn’t have a lot of depth for him, but he got it done in one of the best leagues in the country and he got it done well. So he will provide us a nice anchor on the left side and we can put a nice supporting cast together.” Fox said he is very pleased with the squad that has been assembled from teams across the country. “All of the guys we have can get the job done. We have a lot of good players who are also character guys. Hopefully they can do well for us and put us in a position to contend for gold.”

FinleyMcConnellreceives Kyle Losse scholarship

The inaugural Kyle Losse Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Tsawwassen baseball player Finley McConnell. Kyle’s parents Brian and Niki Losse, along with Marty Lehn, owner of the Big League Experience baseball program, established the scholarship earlier this year. According to Brian, it was a tough decision to make as many players that were nominated were deserving of the award. McConnell plays on the Tsawwassen Peewee AA team that Brian coaches. “I have had the pleasure to coach this young man this year. He brings a positive attitude to the ballpark every day and gives 100 per cent to the game of baseball,” said Brian. “He is always willing to learn and take instructions during practice. At game time he is always ready to play. He always has a smile on his face and is kind to his teammates. This young man has a great future in

Red Sox win Super 7 tournament The Ladner Red Sox 8U baseball team continued its winning ways by capturing the recent Super 7 Tournament in Ridge Meadows. Ladner went undefeated in round robin play, beating North Langley, Cloverdale and Coquitlam.

The Red Sox then beat North Delta 13-8 in the semi-final before besting Cloverdale in a second consecutive tournament title game. The Red Sox are coached by Sean Riley, Doug Miller, Paul Bach, Bryan Hudie and Sean

MacDonald. The roster includes Cole Hudie, Dawson Schmidt, Caleb Miller, Nathan DePicciotto, Sam Johnston, Jack Riley, Thomas Ramage, Nathan North, Kaden MacDonald, Brady Bach, Montague Soucek and Hudson Wortley.

REMEMBRANCES IN MEMORIAM FORSYTHE, Bradley Taken from us August 5, 1980. Wonderful memories we tenderly hold. To love, cherish and never forget. Love Mom, Dad, Randy, Terry & Families & Friends.

OBITUARIES

OBITUARIES Celebration of Life for George Lacey We would like to thank all those who so kindly made a donation in George’s memory to either the Delta Hospital Foundation or the Alzheimers Society of BC. Also a special thank you to Dr. Kordic and to Nurse Nicole at Mountain View Manor for the kind and compassionate care of George during his stay in Delta Hospital and Mountain View Manor. There will be a Celebration of Life for George on Saturday, August 11th from 1-4 pm at the home of our daughter, Heather Foster, at 5069 Linden Drive in Ladner.

Doreen Lacey and Family

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Michael Patrick Korney, on July 20, 2018 after the courageous fighting Irish battle of cancer.

AYRES, John June 23, 1921 - July 19, 2018 It is with great sadness we share that John Auldin Callan Ayres passed away peacefully at the age of 97. John was predeceased by his father, Auldin Field Ayres (Ayers), his mother Laura Ada Callan, his siblings: Margaret, Amy Fay, Horatio, Owen, George, Marion, Virgil, Lester, Angela and Clarence; his wife, Celia Francis, and his beloved dog, Janie. John leaves to mourn his many nieces, nephews, his stepson, Rob Francis and his children, and many friends. John was born in Vancouver and spent his childhood in Kitsilano. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II and was classified as an aircraft mechanic, but his work was as an artistic sheet metal worker. He worked on aircraft throughout the US and Canada and ended his dedicated career with CP Air in Richmond, BC. John was a talented artist and painted beautiful water colours over the years. He also enjoyed reading, films, music, baking (especially apple pies and bread), woodworking, and kept up-to-date with world politics. John particularly loved animals and birds and supported many of their causes throughout his life. A special thank-you to Dr. Stewart Noble, the medical staff at Delta Hospital and to the First Responders for all they did for John and to his neighbours, who took an interest and frequently offered a hand, along with John’s caring family, in helping him to continue living in his home. John was a respected, appreciated and loved member of our family. John, we miss you and always will. In honour of John’s wishes there will not be a service. However, donations to the SPCA are welcome.

TAKEUCHI, Mamoru Moe Takeuchi passed on Thursday, July 26, 2018. We hope that his quick departure was as a result of an invitation too good to refuse and that he has been called to complete a team of four in the tournament of a lifetime… Moe’s bright t-shirts and multitude of hats will be left in the family home in Ladner while his laughter and memory will live on with his wife Nita, daughters Kim and Debbie, son Todd and four grandchildren: Kya, Wil, Charli and Colton and so many others who were lucky enough to know our kind and generous husband, father, grandpa and friend.

PASHAK, Alice Rose Marie Alice Rose Marie Pashak (nee Lemire), 77, passed away peacefully on July 13th, 2018 while reciting her favourite prayers. Over the days leading up to her passing, Alice was surrounded by the comfort of her four children and other family members. During this time, they exchanged laughter, memories and most abundantly, love. Her wit and infectious fight to live life to the fullest was on full display right until her time of passing. She brought light into this world with her pure heart and joy for life. In her presence, you would be guaranteed to hear many stories of family and friends. Family was everything to her. This was very apparent on Facebook, where she was a very active member. If you were “friends” with her on Facebook, you’d be able to attest to her prompt post reactions--she was always the first to hit “like”. She regularly posted about her adoration for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She never forgot to acknowledge family and friends--near or far, alive or departed. Her love of sports included years of curling and playing golf with the girls and always winning the cash in various sports pools. She was survived, only by a few short days, by her loving husband, Terrence (Terry) Pashak. Although her departure leaves our family heavy-hearted, we can rest assured knowing she is now in the company of her Lord, many family members, friends and most importantly, she will be with Terry once again. She was a cherished woman who will be missed by many extended family members and dear friends.

P

KORNEY, Michael Patrick

Alice was born in Turner Valley, Alberta on September 25th, 1940 to her late parents Albert (Barney) and Aurore (Scotty) Lemire. She was predeceased by her siblings Yvonne, Ray and Paul. She leaves to cherish her memory, one remaining brother, Mike.

PASHAK, Terrence John In the early afternoon on July 23rd, 2018, Terrence John Pashak, age 83, peacefully passed away with family by his side. In the days preceding his death, Terry was showered with love from his children and grandchildren. He rested comfortably during these days, usually with his rosary in one hand, and a loved one’s hand in the other. Terry had numerous exciting chapters in his life--his hockey years, rodeo days, golf and fun times at “TJ’s 19th Hole”-- just to name a few. Many have fond memories of him strumming out songs on his guitar. His Donald Duck impression was guaranteed to bring a smile; a favourite amongst the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. During the last chapter of his life, he spent most of his time with his beloved wife, Alice. His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of many dear friends and extended family. Whether we knew him as Terry, TJ, Teeg, Dad or Grandad, we have all been gifted by the warmth of his presence at some point in our lives. Gifted with moments of laughter, smiles and plenty of love. With faith and family in his heart, Terry left this world just 10 days after his wife’s departure. He is now at rest with Alice, together for eternity in the presence of their heavenly Father. Terry was born on August 27, 1934, in Calgary Alberta to his late parents, parent’s names here Pashak. He is survived by his brother Tom and predeceased by his Parents Joseph and Sadie Pashak along with his siblings, Bill and Cathy Heisler. Prior to Alice and Terry’s departure, this past May they celebrated an extraordinary 60th Anniversary Celebration with each and every child, grandchild, and great-grandchild in attendance, their hearts were full. Forever cherishing their memory, they both leave behind 4 children--Marty (Jodi), Byron, Carolyn (Wes) and Cameron, 9 grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren.

ANNIVERSARIES

The Delta Optimist A49

HAPPY 65TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY DOUG AND GLADYS GIBSON

LINTON, Harvey Arthur Harvey Arthur Linton, loving husband, father, and friend passed away peacefully with family by his side at Delta View on July 23, 2018. He leaves his loving wife of 46 years, Fran, his sons, Carl, Chad, and daughter-in-law, Pei Pei. He is predeceased by his brother, Ken (Jean), sister, Elaine (Garry), and infant son, Erick. Harvey was born in Winfield Alberta and grew up in Lantzville. He left home at age 16 to the call of his first love, the Sea. His next 16 years as a commercial fisherman took him on adventures along the Pacific Coast from Alaska to California, entrenching his lifelong reverence and respect of the ocean and shaping his no-nonsense, unflappable and stalwart character. During this time, he earned his captain’s ticket, completed his first of two degrees from UBC, and met and married his other great love, Frances Horsford. Harvey channeled his love of the water into a passionate drive to improve maritime safety and policies during his 30 year career at the Workers Compensation Board (Worksafe BC). He and Fran started a family, and together sailed the Pacific Northwest.

ROTTMANN, Paula Paula Rottmann, was born on October 20, 1937, migrating to Canada in 1959 from Germany, with new husband Ossi (Oswald), firstly to the Yukon for a few years of new migrant experience. They moved down to the south coast and finally settled into their final family home in Ladner in 1973. Paula and Ossi had two loving daughters, Diana (Harald Eberl) and Jeanette, and together the family lived life fully in Ladner, opening two businesses, Ladner Sausage Kitchen, and Ossie’s Deli (Tsawwassen). Paula, loved her home, loved to write poems and loved her family. Sadly Ossi passed in 2013. Paula finally succumbed to health related issues on July 23, 2018. A celebration of life will held at the family home, and in lieu of flowers, a donation to the Kidney Foundation would be appreciated.

Love from your family

No illness can diminish our memories of Harvey, which we invite family and friends to share at a celebration of life to be scheduled at a later time. For now, Harvey’s spirit goes to sea.

Sail on, Captain

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

All who knew Harvey recognized and respected his mischievous humour, strong work ethics, and greatness of heart. Thus, it was with cruel irony that our gentle giant was befelled by a decade long decline with Lewy Body Dementia. Our family is grateful for the consistent support received from family, friends, neighbours, and community, and in particular, the Alzheimer Society, Dr. Adrianna Wong, Drs. Susan and Tom Coutts, Dr. Phillip Lee, the nurses and care aides of Park View, the staff of Forest Grove, Delta View and Ms. Jane Devji.

Due to space restrictions, there is no puzzle this issue.
