How advancing age affects your dental health Unfortunately, it’s impossible to turn back the years but you can take steps to reduce the impact of aging, especially on your dental health. Good oral health is especially important for protecting your general health as you age, given the close link between many serious health conditions and gum disease.

16% An estimated 16% of Canadians wear dentures*

Nowadays, an increasing number of people are retaining at least some or most of their teeth well into old age and although some problems are unavoidable, there is a lot you can do to protect your oral health. Some of the problems facing older people include an increased risk of gum disease and tooth decay, mouth infections, and just general wear and tear on teeth. Often medications prescribed for other health conditions can affect oral health. – Editorial provided by Dr. Sarah Harland at Tsawwassen Place Dental Clinic

Police take down drug line DPD announces 94 charges in operation dubbed Project Green Planet IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Delta police have taken down a significant drug line operation in South Delta. On Tuesday morning, DPD announced that they had secured 94 charges – the majority against Red Scorpion gang members. The seven individuals charged include: Kyle Steven Latimer, a Red Scorpion member, age 27 of Vancouver and Richmond – 19 charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, firearms offences and breach of conditions; Khaadim Kwame Coddett, a Red Scorpion member, age 26 of Richmond – 19 charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, firearms offences and breach of conditions; Billie Onare Kim, a Red Scorpion associate, age 33 of Burnaby – 14 charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, and firearms offences; Jacob Angelo Pereira, a Red Scorpion member, age 25 of Richmond – 14 charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, and firearms offences; Anduele Jonathon Pikeintio, a Red Scorpion member, age 22 of Richmond – 14 charges of trafficking in a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking; James Albert Souliere, age 27 of Richmond – 10 charges of trafficking in a controlled substance and Darryl Rick Whitson, age 27 of Richmond – four charges of trafficking in a controlled substance. The charges were sworn in Richmond provincial court. According to DPD, Latimer, Coddett and Pereira are in custody, while arrest warrants are out for Pikeintio, Souliere, Whitson and Kim.

Delta police seized weapons including a Bushmaster 5.56 semi automatic (top left) and a 9 mm pistol (bottom right) as well as vehicles, including a 2012 BMW X5 (top right) and jewelry (bottom left) during an investigation into a drug line operation in South Delta.

“These arrests and charges will have a significant impact on gangs operating in the Metro Vancouver area,” said Delta police Chief Neil Dubord. “Yes, gangsters and their associates may reap some short-term profits, but we want the public, and those who may be considering getting involved in gangs, to know that the end is inevitable. Whether it’s by violence through a rival gang, or through the justice system, you will be held accountable for your criminal activity.” The DPD drug section initiated Project Green Planet in March 2017 after police were alerted to the presence of a drug line of the same name. Operated as a dial-a-dope line based in Richmond, the drug line supplied South Delta and Vancouver.

The project targeted many of the same individuals named in a major press conference on a multi-agency gang

investigation last week in Vancouver (Project Territory), however, Project Green Planet was a separate investigation, and DPD did communicate with members of the VPDled task force. DPD officers began their project with street level drug purchases, then gradually investigators identified the line managers and suppliers to be Red

in targeting the drug traffickers and not the drug users,” said S/Sgt. Heath Newton with DPD’s investigations bureau. “If we can break the illicit drug trade supply lines, even if it’s only temporarily, we can save lives and reduce connected property crime stemming from drug addiction.” As police gathered evidence, search warrants

were executed in fall 2017 at a variety of locations in Richmond and Burnaby where drug suppliers and line managers were located. Police seized $50,000 to $100,000 worth of street level drugs, including fentanyl, cocaine and heroin. Also seized were: two semi automatic rifles, two pistols, two bullet proof vests, axe/machete and various masks, disguises and items suitable to conduct violent acts. Additionally, police seized proceeds of crime including: $52,000 in cash, $30,000 in jewelry and four luxury vehicles. DPD also seized the master phone that controlled the dialdope operations for South Delta and Richmond. The phone number was well distributed to a customer base and call forwarded to multiple street level dealers.

Jones receives Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers SANDOR GYARMATI

Longtime Delta resident William Lloyd Jones has been awarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, recognizing living Canadians who have made a significant, sustained and unpaid contribution to their community in Canada and abroad. The medal was presented to Jones Tuesday at city hall by B.C. Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin on behalf of Julie Payette, Governor General of

Canada. Jones, 95, is a Second World War veteran and still a very active contributor to his community, including selling poppies with his comrades from Tsawwassen’s Branch 289 of the Royal Canadian Legion. Well known as Mr. Poppy, he has been active in the Legion and selling poppies for years. His numerous other volunteerisms range from the assisting Delta police to Delta Hospital Foundation. He told the audience of just under

100 that he’s always tried to help the community by contributing where he can, even if it’s just putting a smile on someone’s face. In 2015, Jones was presented with Legion of Honour medals by Vancouver’s French Consul General JeanChristophe Fleury. It is the highest decoration France can bestow, the equivalent to the Order of Canada. To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings the French government decided to bestow awards to

living Canadian veterans who participated in D-Day operations. Jones landed on Juno Beach shortly after D-Day, a member of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, fighting through the Battle of Normandy and participated in the liberation of France.

Pet Week of the

Say hello to Evita

Please meet Evita, a snuggle bug who will want to be with you all the time. This girl is a seven year young chihuahua mix who weighs about ten pounds. She is good with cats and small dogs, but we’re not sure about big dogs yet. Evita is an escape artist who snuck out through a first story window so she’ll need a human who is a little bit smarter than she is! Because she is a little shy and can be timid, Evita would probably be happier in a home with older children, single person or couple. Even though she isn’t a fan of being picked up and carried around, she will cheerfully demand cuddles and pets. Evita loves to play with her toys, and tosses them around in the air while she flips out on her back. Her foster thinks she would make an amazing emotional support animal; even though Evita has little interest in strangers, she gravitated towards a friend when he needed someone to cuddle and pet. As with all our dogs, she is spayed and up to date on all shots, vaccines and is microchipped. If you would like to arrange to meet lovely Evita, please email us at pbandchi@gmail.com

Is it real, a threat or a little bit of both? That’s the question a spokesperson for the group Concerned Citizens of Delta South posed for city council on Monday during a workshop on a reported plan by a Tsawwassen farm property owner to construct an “industrial” greenhouse in close proximity to a residential neighbourhood. Kelsey Spring asked whether the end game was to have housing built there, which highlights how land speculation is in play on local farmland. Spring and other members of the group were at city hall to convey concerns about what could be really in store for the 45-plus acre (18 hectare) farm in the 5700-block of 6th Avenue, formerly referred to as the Guichon property but now owned by a numbered company. It’s immediately east of the Forest by the Bay subdivision and adjacent to the Southlands and Beach Grove Golf Club. It’s zoned agricultural, but not in the Agricultural Land Reserve. The owner indicated a greenhouse complex would be constructed, but the City of Delta imposed a stop work order on site clearing because the proper permits, including one for soil deposit, wasn’t in place. Adding to the concern is that the property was listed for sale for $23.8 million, described as a rezoning opportunity to residential. It sold just a few

Kelsey Spring (left) said it’s doubtful someone could get into farming on the site with the property listed at over $570,000 per acre. Community planning director Marcy Sangret (right) said an application to build a house has been submitted but not for a greenhouse. years ago for $12.5 million, far exceeding its assessed value as agriculturallyzoned piece farmland. “It seems unlikely that open-air, soil-based farming, or farming of any kind, is sustainable on this land,” Spring said. The group is asking Delta for several “tactical” steps including applying to have the property placed into the ALR, all with the aim of preserving the property for open–air farming. At this point, there’s no application submitted to build a greenhouse, but applications for a soil deposit permit and to build a residence have been submitted. Delta environment manager Mike Brotherston, who visited the site, said a formal site assessment from a qualified environmental professional will be required, while the province could get involved if the ditch, which could be considered

a watercourse, is to be altered. Noting a report will be coming to council, community planning director Marcy Sangret said the priority now is for the landowner to restore the site and remediate a ditch that had been filled before the stop work order was imposed. Several issues, meantime, need to be clarified including a legal opinion whether an order-incouncil which limited the city’s bylaw powers over the ALR also applies to farm properties that are not within the provincial farm reserve. Sangret noted that, so far, Delta has made bylaw changes in conjunction with the province for farmland in and outside the ALR. Delta’s ability to restrict uses that are not compatible with homes in close proximity and edge planning also need to be clarified.

Cyclist remembered as ‘one of the good guys’ IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Dick Nicholls is being remembered as an accomplished cyclist, pilot, friend and just a genuine community guy with a zest for life.

Nicholls died last Tuesday in a collision with a vehicle near the Boundary Bay Airport. The collision is still being investigated by Delta Police to determine what exactly happened. Nicholls was a found-

ing member of the South Delta Riders cycling club. He brought passion and fun to everything he was involved in, and never missed an opportunity to get involved according to friend Bill Yearwood. “I invited Dick to join

me in the cockpit of several helicopter flights we took to bicycle races. On some of those flights I was able to let him fly the helicopter, and even after more than 30 years after hanging up his wings, he lit up with delight and questions like a person starting a new career,” said Yearwood. “Dick loved people, particularly women and persons who shared creditable new information. He was a sponge for knowledge and was very excited by new technology.” Yearwood said they bought similar new cars in 2015 and marvelled at how smart the cars were. “It is also ironic that he and I discussed the developments in medical science and that they are on the verge of halting the aging process,” added Yearwood. “Dick had a target of 125. He and some of our colleagues have found that cycling/physical exercise is the fountain

of youth, but we know that a component of life’s risk is the probability of an accident. As young as Dick was in his 80s, an accident put a sad end to a beautiful life.” Besides riding, Nicholls had a passion for cycling safety. “Dick was a big supporter of cycling safety work HUB is doing in Delta, and as an experienced rider, he gave us a lot of good suggestions on items to work on and tons of encouragement,” said fellow rider and HUB member Neil Pope. “Due to this tragedy, all of us in Delta HUB will be even more passionate about doing everything we can as we work with the City of Delta to help create the safest possible cycling conditions. We are making progress, but there is a lot more work to do.” Nicholls was also actively involved for many years in the 1970s with Delta’s volunteer fire department. “I wasn’t in the Delta

Police bike unit offers cycling safety tips

Advice given after pair of collisions last week

In the wake of a tragic collision Aug. 7 that claimed the life of a Delta cyclist, and a crash Aug. 8 involving a teen cycling on Ladner Trunk Road, the Delta Police bike unit is offering a few safety tips for cyclists and motorists. Officers in the unit – which is an addition to the Delta Police Tsawwassen First Nation Services Team – took a one-week police biking course, to learn how to safely handle their police bikes. “Just like other cyclists, we want to work or bike hard, enjoy what we do and come home uninjured at the end,” said Const. Jeff Miller. Miller and his partner in the unit, Sgt. Roy Garnham, have three B’s that they keep in mind: Be conspicuous (visible, obvious) Be predictable (if you’re in a lane that turns right, people expect you will turn right) Be aware. The majority of collisions between motor

vehicles and cyclists occur in intersections. Several studies have found the fault in vehicle/bicycle collisions is essentially equally shared between cyclists and drivers. The majority of cyclists were going straight ahead. Miller notes that PHOTO BY DELTA POLICE the rules of the road, and The Delta Police bike unit is offering tips to cyclists and motorists. traffic signs and signals No side-by-side riding also apply to on the roadway cyclists. elta council’s final approval of Gateway’s $70-million casino complex has given Richmond officials another opportunity to trot out a laundry list of self-serving and transparent reasons why it’s in the wrong spot. For some strange reason, the Gaming Control Act includes a dispute resolution process that kicks in after a local government has given final approval to a casino, and Richmond is going to use this faint hope clause to reiterate its objection to the B.C. Lottery Corporation. Among its concerns is the notion that the Delta Town & Country Inn site, where the casino is to be built, is not well served by transit so it will become a car-oriented destination. That’s correct, but if development only took place in areas that had adequate transit service, well, there might not be a Delta, at least not one we’d recognize. What’s more, I can’t believe everyone who frequents the River Rock in Richmond arrives by public transportation or the resort wouldn’t have in excess of 1,500 parking spots. The worry about agriculture is equally spurious. The present hotel has been there for decades without spurring development on adjacent farmland, so it’s hard to see how replacing it with a casino complex will somehow change that. If Malcom Brodie and Co. are so concerned about farmland, they might want to reconsider their ill-conceived mega-house policy that is doing far more to harm agricultural land than a Delta casino ever could. There are other worries about crime, traffic and more, but what this is really about is Richmond protecting the notso-insignificant revenue stream it gets from the River Rock. Having received more than $200 million in gaming revenue over the last two decades, Richmond doesn’t want anything to jeopardize that gravy train, so it views the pending competition from just across the Fraser River as being a little too close for comfort. I suspect cleaning up the money laundering mess will have a far greater financial impact than losing any customers to a new casino in Ladner, but I guess with that overdue hit now underway, Richmond doesn’t want to endure a double whammy. That’s too bad because it’s only a matter of time now and there’s nothing a pile of seethrough excuses can do about it.

Yes, benefits and freebies for adults are out there

T

here are many services and benefits for adults, especially those on low to middle incomes, but finding and applying for them can feel like an exercise in futility. “The moral authoritarian mindset prevails - we have to ensure some senior doesn’t receive a government benefit they don’t qualify for, so we’ll put up all these barriers so only the very, very, very genuinely qualified applicants will receive these benefits.” B. Sainsbury - Facebook There are a few information hubs you can access to find out about various services and benefits for all ages and situations. The easiest is by simply calling 211 where a live person will connect you to the service you require. 811 is for all things health related. Both operate 24/7. For those of you able to use the Internet, “BC Housing” has a rental housing registry for low to middle income folks, plus rental assistance grants for families and SAFER grants for seniors. Service Canada has a Benefits Finder tool which has both federal and provincial benefits listed, including application forms. Or you can go to a Service Canada office. There are 11 in Metro Vancouver, including Richmond, North and South Surrey. That website is www.canadabenefits.gc.ca.

Community Comment ML BURKE

The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) tops up the Old Age Security pension. If eligible for the GIS the applicant will also qualify for an “annual” $45 bus pass. A lesser known tax credit for those who make enough to pay taxes, is the Disability Tax Credit (DTC), which can give a sizeable refund going back 10 years. Then there are the subsidized health and home care services accessed through a case manager at Fraser Health for lower income folks needing health-related assistance. For recovery after a surgery, you should apply a few weeks before to allow time to get into the system. Freebies and Perks in Delta: The City of Delta sponsors two free seniors’ busses, one for North and one for South Delta, which takes people to appoint-

ments and shopping. Delta also provides a seniors resources coordinator to help older Deltans or their advocates, find and apply for subsidized services and housing. Folks of all ages can escape summer heat waves and winter freezes at the Tsawwassen Mills Mall (shopping not required). Scooters or wheelchairs can be rented at customer service. Seniors can also walk for exercise and families with young children enjoy the free play area and the huge fish tank and wild animal displays in the Bass Pro Shop. Continuing education opportunities abound with offerings from Delta Elder College and Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s TALK series. If you’re 65-plus, I recommend a day of cruising, completely free, through the Gulf Islands and/or to Vancouver Island and back. It’s about a three-hour round trip, or six hours if you do it twice. You’ll need a new boarding pass for each direction. Just get yourself to the Tsawwassen ferry terminal Monday through Thursday when seniors travel free. Cars cost, so go as a foot passenger. The 620 bus will deliver you, or if you have a car, the Park and Go lot at the beginning of the Tsawwassen spit is only $12 per 24-hr day plus they have a free shuttle to and from the terminal.

Precious bird habitat must be protected

Editor: Each fall for two to three weeks, we in Tsawwassen, are treated to the marvelous daily sight of thousands of Canadian Geese and White Snow Geese flying overhead and coming to rest in the southlands area before journeying south. Five million migratory birds recuperate in Delta each year. This yearly spectacle makes Tsawwassen a beautiful place to live, aiding migratory birds and incorporating nature in our shared environment. Unfortunately, the migratory birds’ traditional flyway and resting site are being threatened by the proposed development of industrial green houses and a parking lot just a few meters and immediately east of the Forest by the Bay subdivision.

Forest by the Bay residents were alarmed and dismayed at the large equipment levelling the land, cutting trees and depositing gravel directly behind their homes. It was determined that the purchaser of the land did not have a permit – consequently, the City of Delta issued a stop work order. This was front page news in the June 27th issue of the Delta Optimist. Concerned citizens in Tsawwassen and Point Roberts are dismayed at this potential blight in their vicinity. Greenhouses can emit large amounts of light which can be seen long distances, have fans creating noise pollution and if marijuana crops are grown, emit a foul odour which some growers have used chemically harmful

“air fresheners” to mask the smell. Currently open air soil-based vegetable crops are grown in this area. In my opinion we must stop any development to both protect the migratory birds’ long established and traditional habitat as well as prevent noise, air, and light pollution in our residential neighbourhoods. Industrial green houses must be sited far away from the heart of Tsawwassen. It is our shared duty to protect and preserve this precious habitat for these birds. For more information you may wish to check out the Concerned Citizens of Delta South website at www.ccods.ca and consider filling out the online survey or downloading the petition. MLA appreciates committee’s work

Editor: Re: Delta’s Paton critical of Huntington’s committee report I appreciate the work of Vicki Huntington and all members of the Minister of Agriculture’s Advisory Committee on their interim report to the Minister released last week. Having read the report in full, I disagree with the policy direction implied by a few of the recommendations. In particular, the

move away from regional panels and towards a more centralized system will make it harder for the knowledge of local farmers and ranchers to be considered in ALC decisions, and the removal of Zone 2 from the ALR will hurt the ability of farmers to stay on their farms. As a lifelong dairy farmer, I believe strongly that if you want to save farmland, you have to save the farmer. These proposed

changes will hurt the livelihoods of farmers across British Columbia. Though I have not received any correspondence from Ms. Huntington on this issue to date, I would be happy to meet with her in the near future to review the report and highlight my concerns in greater detail. Ian Paton MLA, Delta South BC Liberal Agriculture Critic

Tough to see root of the problem

Editor: Re: Extremists destroying our country, letter to the editor, Aug. 9 Bob Orrick’s letter about “fifth columns,” a wide wound in the country,” “a horde of activists, idealists and extremists,” and “negative people posing as Canadians” is difficult to comprehend due to

the scatter-gun spread of insults and complaints lacking specific information about what has upset him. Who exactly are those activists, idealists, extremists and negative people, and what, precisely, have they done? It would be much better if Mr. Orrick were to use

your pages to respectfully discuss whatever social or other problems he has identified so that we can all benefit from free and open exchanges of ideas on important issues and problems that affect all of us. Rants do not achieve that. Stephen Calvert

Neighbour tired of hearing barking

Editor: This letter is directed at Massey Drive dog owners. Does your dog bark repeatedly on a daily basis for no apparent reason? Do you tend to ignore this barking except for the occasional “no” command,

which is usually ignored or has minimal effect? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then you may be eligible for an award as clueless neighbour of the year. Seriously though, think about it.

Why should anyone have to listen to your dog’s on-going barking? Consider training your dog and respecting your neighbours. Yes, this is probably referring to you. Brian Stewart

Emissions from the Enviro-Smart Organics composting facility in East Ladner are not expected to directly cause significant health effects. That’s what Fraser Health’s medical health officer had to say when he appeared as a delegation at Delta council Monday night. In its ongoing effort to bring an end to the foul smells emanating from the facility, Delta sought advice from Fraser Health as to whether there are any health concerns related to the air emissions and if so, what action could be taken. Michael Schwandt, along with Dr. Goran Krstic told council that

Council wants assurances regarding casino safety ‘Significant’ issues at stake in Delta, says Kanakos IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Delta council appears to be taking a tough stand around public safety regarding the proposed Gateway Cascades Casino in Delta. On Monday civic politicians endorsed a notice of motion brought forward by Coun. Jeannie Kanakos regarding the Peter German report on money laundering at B.C. casinos that was released on June 27. “The implementation of the Peter German report is important to Delta,” said Kanakos. “I know there are varying points of view on the casino in Delta, the end in mind is that we contact the Attorney General and that we request his assurance that the implementation of the Peter German report as soon as possible.” The motion endorsed by council states that the City of Delta write the Attorney

General, the Minister responsible for gaming in British Columbia, and request that he provide assurances and an implementation plan for the recommendations of the Peter German report. “I wanted to put this forward in this way because it is important the Peter German report be implemented and that this council, this community, shares an interest in seeing those recommendations be implemented,” added Kanakos. “His report is very good. His bottom line is saying the regulatory framework currently that exists in the province is flawed and that a whole range of steps be taken by the Attorney General. There are significant safety issues at stake here in Delta.” Mayor Lois Jackson pointed out that nine of German’s recommendations have already been implemented by the province.

“I’ll support the motion and I support the report,” added Coun. Robert Campbell. “Whether or not they all get implemented or altered are all political decisions that the current or future government of British Columbia will make over time. I certainly in general support what he has written, but I do believe there will be changes to these recommendations over time.” Kanakos said the German report moves forward the issue of public safety in relation to casinos in the province and Delta. “For all the folks who are concerned or opposed to a casino…I remain, in my view, that it is not a good fit for Delta,” she said. “Having said that I think that we would need the implementation of the recommendations subject to the B.C. Lottery Corporation approving the casino, which we know is still outstanding.”

Your untreated Hearing Loss affects the ones you love.

More words start with the letter ‘S’ than any other letter. But if you have a hearing loss it can feel as though those words have been removed from your hearing dictionary. You have probably also lost the ability to hear the letters ‘F-P-K & T’. With untreated hearing loss, you won’t be hearing those words either. Hearing aids from NexGen Hearing can put the words back and make hearing easier.

A Tsawwassen First Nation artist has lent his talents to a beautiful design on a Delta Police Department cruiser. Frankie Campbell developed the logo about three years ago. It has been utilized on T-shirts, blankets and stickers and has received much praise in other communities as well as other police agencies. Having it on a Delta police car brings it more into the public realm, according to Tsawwassen First Nation liaison officer Const. Mike Grandia. “The logo is about the big picture of how we as a police department serve the TFN,” said Grandia. “The logo is really about the policing model that we have implemented on TFN, which is based on the blending of the two cultures, the police and the TFN, and how we work with TFN culture and community norms in conjunction with our police services to serve the community. “The project has been a lot of fun,” said Grandia. “Frankie and I have worked on some other

things for other people as well. It’s kind of cool to see the blending of Frankie’s work and his culture with the policing culture. I think that has been the big thing as opposed to it being one thing or the other. We have found a way to meld the two together. Frankie’s work is able to see the vision of what we wanted and be able to blend everything.” Campbell said after working with Grandia and sharing ideas, he began to develop a picture of it in his head. “It probably took a week, maybe two, to come up with,” said Campbell. He started drawing in 1995 and then started carving. The past six years he has taken his skills to another level with several carving projects. His work is showcased in a number of commercial buildings, including Tsawwassen Mills. “When I saw the logo on the police cruiser – it was just awesome,” Campbell said. “It really showed up a lot more on the cruiser then I expected it would. It was a fun project working with Mike. I’m very happy to see my work showcased in this way.”

tor of community Blake Cowan. “James has been passionate about this for a long time and pursued it. He contacted Nanaimo and Kitsilano and initially against all odds, got the go-ahead. James has really been the champion on it.” Cowan said it has been a huge task for the club to organize the event. “Part of the difficulty is that it is a first time event. There is the uncertainty because we had to get approval from Metro Parks, provincial permissions, so it’s been months – at least six months, but it has all come together,” he said.

As parking at Centennial Beach could be an issue, the club is encouraging the public to make use of their shuttle, which will run from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shuttle will pick up people every 30 minutes on the hour and half hour from 1988-56th Ave. (the entrance to Tsawwassen – east side of 56th). “The shuttle then drops people right into the key area for the festival,” explained Cowan. “The shuttle is by donation, so we’re hoping that people will donate to Rotary, which is greatly appreciated.”

He said the club expects 10 to 15 participants for the Bathtub Race. “That number will enable a good race for the racers as well for the crowds to enjoy,” he said. “We really expect a great community event. The club members are working really hard to ensure a great day for the whole family. Fab Fourever – I haven’t seen them, but from what I hear they are a tremendous act. It’s going to be a lot of fun.” More details on the inaugural event can be found online at: https:// www.rotarybathtubrace. com/.

Families can enjoy a wonderful night under the stars on Saturday. Metro Vancouver plays host to its 12th annual Starry Nights at Deas

Island Regional Park. The event runs from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Participants are asked to meet near the rowing club. Explore the park along lantern-lit paths. Discover fun facts about the creatures who make the park

their home. Make a wish upon a star during this enchanted evening. Organizers say participants should allow one hour to complete the walk. You are asked to bring a flashlight or lantern, dress appropriately for the

weather and to bring bug spray. Also please leave your pets at home. The path for the walk will also be lined and lit by lanterns. The event is free and suitable for all ages. “This is one of our most popular summer events

for families,” said Metro Vancouver communications spokesperson Sarah Lusk. “Watch out above for owls and other creatures, check out the drumming circle and other activities. It’s a fun event for everyone.”

How to fix common exercise mistakes

Tips and advice to help guide you succesfully through push-ups, squats, lunges and planks

Well on Your Way P.J. WREN

Struggling with pain when you exercise? Or, maybe you aren’t seeing the results you should be. Maybe it has to do with your form, the way you are actually doing the exercise. Here are four common exercises that can easily be done incorrectly, and some tips to help you rock them. Push-ups I, personally, hate pushups. But, I believe people

should be able to push, pull and squat their own bodyweight, so I suck it up and do push-ups with almost every workout. But, this is an exercise that can go sideways really fast. A quick tip is to learn the push-up in an easy environment and then layer on from there. So, start on your knees, and for those of you who aren’t strong in the upper body also start with your hands on an elevated object (like a bench or a chair). From the ground, start on your stomach, with your knees in contact with the floor, your fingertips wider than your shoulders, and your elbows almost on top of wrists. Staying on your knees press yourself up in a solid plank, keeping your neck lined up with the spine,

your ears away from your shoulders, your elbows tucked in a bit and your core tight.

in a chair leading with your butt. Throughout the squat keep the alignment

I, personally, hate push-ups. But, I believe people should be able to push, pull and squat their own bodyweight, so I suck it up and do push-ups with almost every workout. Lower slowly back to the ground until your chest is just a couple of inches off the ground and then press back up again. Squats A common mistake I see when people first initiate a squat is they try to keep their upper body vertical. Instead, allow your torso to tip forward slightly, while your rear end sits back. Think about sitting

with your spine. A common mistake is to over arch your low back, or to “wink” your tailbone under. Squat as low as it feels comfortable, aiming (at the very least) to thighs parallel to the floor. If you find you can’t squat very deep it could be due to tight hips or tight ankles. If this is the case, try a wider stance and add

some mobility drills into your routine before you start your workout. Lunges Lunges tend to be a knee killer for a lot of people. If you are one of these people, then I suggest a reverse lunge. Start with feet hip width apart and step backwards a good stride. While keeping the front knee in line with the ankle (don’t let it cave in), lower your back knee down towards the ground, pause and then lift it back up and step the feet together again. Not only does this take some of the pressure off of the knees, a reverse lunge also places a bit more focus on the glutes and hamstrings - which tend to be weaker muscle groups on people. Plank One problem I have with the plank is a lot of

people have poor posture to begin with and then go into a plank position with bad posture – strengthening this undesirable posture even further. Not cool. To correct this start on your stomach, position your elbows under the shoulders with your wrists in line with the elbows, palms facing down (think of the sphinx). Keep this arm position as you press your body up into a plank (staying on the knees to modify). From there improve your plank even further by shrugging your shoulders back and down and aligning the neck and spine. ple shoes. I refrained from asking for an explanation, but again, I was puzzled. It was news to me that a running shoe could be cross, but I was pretty sure I didn’t want shoes with an attitude. It occurred to me that it had been some time since I had been shopping for running shoes. The last time, I believe I had only to decide on size and colour. Never was I asked about things like stability, support or cushioning. I resisted sharing this observation with the clerk. I stood there, baffled. “Tell you what,” I said, pointing to her feet. “Do you happen to sell those shoes? The pretty purple ones?” “Yes,” she said. “Seven and a half?” I asked. “Yes,” she said. “Let’s do it,” I said. I had found my shoes. They could have been made for baseball or squash, I really didn’t know. That could have been a problem, so I decided not to ask.

“Seven and a half,” I said. The twenty-something clerk laughed. “But what kind of shoes?” She repeated. I wasn’t sure I understood the question. “Um, ones with laces?” I said. The twenty-something clerk decided a tour of the store was in order. “These ones,” she said, waving to the footwear display behind her, “are tennis shoes. Next to it, we have basketball shoes. Then there are hiking shoes. And walking shoes. And running shoes, some for road running and some for trails.” “Oh,” I said. My head was spinning. I had no idea how hiking shoes differed from walking shoes, and I wasn’t about to ask. I also wondered what would happen if I dared to wear tennis shoes while playing basketball, but I suspected that no good would come of that. “Of course, we also have cross trainers,” said the clerk with the pretty pur-

I needed new runners. I had decided that the occasional walk around the block or visit to the gym was in order, and my sandals didn’t cut it. Too flimsy. I needed footwear that was, well, exercise friendly. I went to the mall, which happens to sell more than a few pairs of shoes. I found myself a sporting goods store. “Oh, hello,” I said to the twenty-something clerk. She was wearing pretty little purple shoes. “I need some running shoes.” “Well,” she said. “You’ve come to the right place. What kind of shoes are you looking for?”

ADVICE FROM THE PROS Q: How should people in the market for a condo or townhouse go about looking for the right real estate agent to represent them? What are some important qualities to look for in an agent?

Q: Blended Families and Estate Planning A: Blended families are becoming more common. A blended family is where both partners come into

Lucky Uppal Lawyer

the relationship with children from previous relationships. Figures from the 2016 Canadian Census reveal that 1 in 10 children up to age 14 lives in a stepfamily. This changing landscape creates a whole new challenge in estate planning. It is extremely important that people who have blended families take particular care to make an estate plan that balances the interests of their children and spouse. Consider John and Mary Watson get married. This is a second marriage for both. John and Mary bring children from a previous relationship into the marriage. During their marriage, they maintain joint ownership of a property. If Mary were to die without a careful estate plan in place, the property would go directly to John by the right of survivorship, meaning that Mary’s kids from her previous marriage do not inherit an interest in the property. In British Columbia, if Mary died without a will, with Wills and Estate Succession Act (WESA) gives John the first $150,000 of the estate, since Mary has children from a prior relationship. By contrast, if John and Mary’s only children were their biological children, John would receive the first $300,000. Only after John receives this preferred share would the remainder of the estate be equally split between Mary and her children. In many cases, this division of the estate does not reflect the deceased’s wishes. There are several ways in which the interests of all parties can be maintained and protected. A knowledgeable advisor can create a plan that takes into consideration the length of marriage or relationship, how marriage assets are held, and who brought what into the relationship, and the respective needs of the children. It’s important to remember that spouses and children of the deceased have a right to apply to have the will varied in BC if they feel they were inadequately provided for. Litigation that arises from lack of estate planning will devastate relationships, and reduce the amount of money available to support the surviving family.

QUESTION:

Does Cold Laser Therapy help with Tennis Elbow?

Dr. Sereena Uppal D.C.

Delta Village Chiropractic Suite 2, 4882 Delta Street, Ladner, BC V4K 2T8 Tel: 604-952-0538 DeltaVillageChiropractic.com

Tennis Elbow/lateral epicondylitis is caused by overuse of the wrist, arm, forearm or hand muscles that results in inflammation of the tendons on the outside of the elbow. A person does NOT need to play tennis to experience this condition. Other individuals whose jobs can elicit this sort of pain are painters, landscapers, plumbers, butchers and carpenters. Cold Laser Therapy most definitely can help alleviate pain associated with this condition. The low level laser light penetrates through the skin, without harming or heating the area. Not only can laser therapy reduce inflammation but it works wells with exercise, physiotherapy or other treatment types. Some pain reduction can usually be felt after the first treatment and best results are achieved with cumulative treatments.

Q:

“How do I make sure my Will takes care of those I love and the causes I care for?”

QUESTION:

What does a Naturopathic Medical Clinic offer?

A: Having a legal Will can give you peace of mind knowing that your final wishes will be met and loved ones will be taken care of after you have gone. It also gives you the opportunity to make a meaningful gift in support of a charity that is near to your heart, without giving up assets during your lifetime. Making a gift through your Will can have significant tax savings for your estate and can help preserve more of your assets for your loved ones. When a gift is made, a charitable tax receipt is issued to your estate which can help to reduce or eliminate final taxes owing. ANSWER:

Naturopathic medicine is a form of primary care that focuses on the least invasive treatment methods in order to restore health. Naturopathic medical care is patient centered, it involves getting to know patients entire health history, rather than focusing on a few symptoms. In addition to a thorough health history, diagnostic testing may also be warranted to investigate the underlying cause of an illness. These may include blood, saliva or breath samples taken at lifelabs or in the office.

Dr. Sheldon Bjorgaard, BSc., ND

Methods of treatment include specific or general dietary changes often in addition to the use of nutritional supplementation or botanical medicine. Naturopathic doctors are also authorized and trained in conventional prescription medications, and can provide most prescription refills including those for high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes. Though Naturopathic medicine is general by nature, there are a few conditions we see frequently in our clinic and are able to treat quite successfully. These include: • Hormonal imbalances including PCOS, Infertility, Menopause and associated symptoms • Poor digestion, Irritable bowel syndrome • Environmental allergies (pets, trees, grasses, moulds, pollen, weeds, dust, etc.) • Joint pain and injuries • We also provide medically supervised rapid weight loss programs for those who are having difficulty losing weight or keeping weight off To learn more about how Naturopathic medicine can help you visit www.southdeltaintegrative.com to book an appointment!

ADVICE

FROM THE PROS QUESTION I’ve had my new hearing aids for a few days, but they’re not performing exactly as I would like. Why? ANSWER

Fish sales are back for the first time since 2014 at Ladner Harbour.

FILE PHOTO

Fish sales at Ladner Harbour

Ladner Harbour will see much more activity with fresh fish sales right off the boat. This summer local fishermen are expecting a higher than normal sockeye salmon return, according to City of Delta staff, who are recommending

the sale of fresh fish from fishing vessels at the Elliott Street wharf. Sales will be permitted until Sept. 30 seven days a week. Sales will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Vessel operators can secure a permit from the harbour master to dock at

This is common and nothing to be concerned about! It’s important to remember that adjusting to your new hearing aids will be a gradual process. We advise our clients that it often takes 4-6 visits to our clinic until we have the hearing aids perfectly fit and calibrated for each person and his or her lifestyle.

the wharf on a first-come, first-served basis The last time fish sales took place at the wharf was 2014. According to staff, the general feedback from the public was good with the city promoting the sales through social media.

Has The Medicine Shoppe been in existence very long. It’s such a great pharmacy!

A. This September marks 25 years that Medicine Shoppe Pharmacies have been operating in Canada.

ANSWER: Yes you can always sell your property, no matter what. If the house is “rented” i.e. month to month, in writing or not, then you need to give the tenant a copy of the subject removal, 2 months notice, and repay 1 month. David Moore

There are now over 200 independently owned and operated Medicine Shoppe Pharmacies in every province in Canada. Since 1993, every aspect of The Medicine Shoppe has been designed with your health in mind. “Your health. Our priority” is more than just a tag line, it’s the reason our pharmacist-owners choose to practice under the Medicine Shoppe brand. A dedicated focus on health care products and services coupled with a warm, welcoming environment make The Medicine Shoppe the pharmacy of choice for patients from coast to coast.

If it’s “leased” i.e. rented for a period of time, in writing, then the new owner would be obligated to let the tenant stay until the end of the term. If you do plan to sell your rental and are unsure of the process, feel free to call!

QUESTION

QUESTION:

What is the difference between Nominal and Actual Measurements of Dimensional Lumber?

Is there a right time to get Granny’s name on a wait list for assisted living?

ANSWER

Bob Matheson Manager

100% CANADIAN OWNED

In addition to getting comfortable with how the hearing aids physically feel, you’ll notice that sounds and noises you may not have heard for quite some time are back. Your ears are now being supported by your new hearing aids; this means that in the first few days, many sounds will appear louder than before. Rest assured this will cease to be an issue once your brain gets used to these sounds again.

The term dimensional lumber refers to softwood species (such as spruce or pine) that are used in the building trades for framing and other carpentry uses. The reasons why the nominal dimension of this lumber (what the lumber is called) is larger than the actual dimensions involves historical practices in the lumber industry. Originally, a “2 x 4” was cut as a rough green (not dry) board that was exactly 2 x 4 inches in size, but by the time the boards were dried and planed, the boards were smaller, approaching the now-standard 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches in size. In modern lumber practices, the boards are no longer exactly 2 x 4 inches when first cut, but today’s drying and planning methods still leave the board 1 1/2 inches thick and 3 1/2 inches wide. The old standard of calling this board a 2 x 4 still remains, even though in today’s lumber practices, the board has never been 2 x 4 inches in size. All of this can make things rather confusing when you are buying lumber to make a project to precise dimensions. With that being said, we are here to sort out any confusion you may have and help you with your project no matter the size!

ANSWER: There are many contributing factors to making this decision. Much depends on your loved ones ability to safely remain in their own home, especially if living alone. If they are not in danger to themselves or others, Ie: high fall risk, memory issue, etc. ‘Aging in Place’ can be a viable solution with proper support.

Being aware of their cognitive and emotional well-being are vital. It’s important to have an open discussion about what your loved one really wants going forward. Listen to her concerns & needs and help encourage her in making her own decisions about her well-being, as she is able. Speaking to her doctor for suggestions may help broach the subject objectively. Feistiness may not be resistance to your suggestion, rather a trait that keeps them going and independent. Also, putting her name on a wait list doesn’t mean she needs to pack up if her name comes up before she’s ready or needing to move (be prepared that the wait list could take up to several months). If she declines, her name moves down the list to wait for the next call. Decline too many times though, and her name can be stricken from the list altogether. Being informed & aware of your loved ones’ situation can help make this decision a more inclusive and sensitive one. HoneyDo is experienced in supporting families while assisting their loved ones to ‘Age in Place’ safely & successfully, no matter where they call home.

ADVICE FROM THE PROS QUESTION:

QUESTION:

I was in your store waiting to show you coins. I watched you buy gold jewelry off another lady. You were putting some of it in a machine before you told her what Karat it was.

As we can finally see sunshine again, my thoughts turn to landscaping and outdoor parties. I have been thinking about setting up gas in my backyard for my BBQ and possibly for an outdoor fireplace. Is this something you recommend? Is it easy to do? Noah- Tsawwassen

What does that machine do?

ANSWER: That is our Niton DXL Precious Metal Analyzer, one of the few in BC. It tells us whether something is gold, silver or platinum and the purity of the item.

ANSWER:

Paul Bach Owner 604-940-2268

After this winter, we are all looking forward to summer BBQ’s! Having a gas hookup in your backyard is a great thing to have. The convenience alone is worth it. No more lugging a propane bottle to get filled after running out in the middle of a summer party! We install BBQ boxes, which make the hook-ups easy and safe. A gas, fire-pit adds a whole new dimension to your outdoor space. Think of the beauty of camping, without having to leave home. Adding and re-directing gas lines is something that we do all the time. We are a Fortis BC Trade Ally Partner. Our Installers are all Certified Gas Fitters. The costs of doing this depends on a number of factors, (such as distance from your Gas Meter, etc.). We can set you up with a free estimate and let you know what it would cost to turn your backyard into the Oasis you envision!

We have had this machine for 4 years now and just had it come back from servicing. It is much more accurate than testing with acids. The Niton Analyzer is also on a counter where you can see the results to the exact percentage and Karat of your gold.

Jim Richardson, owner

We are one of Richmond’s larger scrap gold buyers and according to our customers we are the best. We also do tests using our machine for our customers knowledge of their own items.

Our charge of $5.00 per test just covers our time and maintenance costs for the Analyzer. Should you be looking to sell broken, estate or just pieces you no longer wear, bring them in for an offer. JIM

Q: I am very nervous to go to my dental appointments.

QUESTION:

ARE THE 30 YEAR AMORTIZATIONS A THING OF THE PAST?

Is there anything I can do to make my visit more comfortable?

A: Our dental practice offers a form of sedation that makes the dental appointment fly by without any down time. We, at our office, take pride in putting our patients first and making their dental visit as comfortable as possible. Our staff understands that some people have had bad experiences in the past Dr. Raj Dhiman and that coming into the dental clinic can cause feelings of anxiety for some. 604-946-9588 The sedation is very simple, it is an oral medication taken an hour prior to your appointment. It is ideal for dental treatment because during the appointment our patients are able to communicate with us but do not remember most of their appointment after. All patients are monitored closely during the sedation and all precautions are followed to make this visit as comfortable as possible so you can feel confident in your appointment with us. This form of sedation can be used during any procedure, even during dental cleanings. Call our office to book a consult to discuss how we can make your dental care easy for you. ANSWER: Not if you have at least 20% down. The 25 year amortizations are only applicable for those homebuyers who have less than 20% down of the purchase price. If you are buying or refinancing and there is at least a 20% equity portion in your home, a 30 year amortization is available to you!

Q: How long should full plate dentures last? A: This is a multifactorial answer. Foremost it depends

on how well you take care of them. Subsequently diet; the types of foods you eat significantly impact on the wear of your teeth. Course foods tend to wear out the chewing surfaces at a much quicker rate. White mint candies that have a sandy feeling coating are highly abrasive and destructive to artificial teeth. Your particular physiology can affect your fitting surfaces. For example, osteoporosis can affect the fitting surfaces by creating a faster rate of change to your underlying bone structures. Numerous other factors may also play into these scenarios. I create dentures to last at least seven to ten years using high quality products; dependent on the above conditions. If you have any other questions you would like answered, please do not hesitate to book a free consultation with my office. Or you can write to us via our website at bcdenturist.ca.

QUESTION: ANY PRACTICAL TIPS FOR PEOPLE WHO STRUGGLE WITH CLOSET ORGANIZATION?

ANSWER:

Alex Voogd Richmond, Delta, Vancouver – Franchisee 604-275-6868 www.STOR-X.com

When it comes to closet organization, people typically struggle with three things: they have too much clutter, not enough space, and no system. The first thing I recommend my clients do is weed out what they don’t wear. Decluttering can be very liberating. If there is still not enough space in their closet, my advice is to store out-of-season clothes in boxes up high on a shelf or under the bed and rotate the clothes according to the weather. The next hurdle is creating and implementing an organizational system. Every closet or storage area in the home should have a designated purpose – linens, toys, cleaning supplies, and so on. Drawers and organizer bins can be labeled. As the saying goes: A place for everything, and everything in its place. Call for a complimentary design consultation.

Quilt Walk and Car Show

Quilts and cars in the spotlight Annual Ladner Business Association event also includes entertainment, Pin-Up Pageant & food

Ladner Village will come alive with creativity and colour when it hosts the 14th annual quilt walk and classic car show this Sunday. Presented by the Ladner Business Association (LBA), this is an event not to be missed running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. LBA president and event chair Jill McKnight said they are anticipating 400 vintage cars and trucks vying for prizes in 18 vehicle classes as well as 150 lovingly-made quilts, which will be displayed throughout the Village. The public will be able to vote for their favourites in three categories. “This event is perfect for the whole family,” said McKnight. “Families can wander through the cars, check out the quilts and take in the atmosphere in historic Ladner.” Entertainment, start-

Participants will wander throughout the crowd looking for your votes. Pageant participants will also be teaming up with the Lounge Hounds and Elvis for a stage show at

12:30 p.m. Awards will be handed out at 3:30 p.m. While enjoying all the sights and sounds, you are sure to work up quite an appetite.

Fantastic food trucks featuring hamburgers, smokies, mini donuts, grilled cheese and more as well as Ladner restaurants featuring their tasty fare will all be on hand. You

can also refresh your taste buds with fresh squeezed lemonade or ice cold root beer or indulge in a sweet treat with hand crafted ice cream and ice cream floats. You can also enter to win giveaways at many event sponsors or find the perfect gift for your car enthusiast in your family - die cast cars, vintage dresses, hand-printed clothing, car and motorcycle shirts and licence plate art from several vendors and Ladner Village businesses. “This is the largest LBA event of the year organized by volunteers and supported by our generous sponsors,” added McKnight. “The LBA fosters a positive business climate, engages the community, maintains relations with government and promotes Ladner. We are all looking forward to another great event.”

Car show organizer hopes to crack 400 mark on Sunday It’s not your typical car show. On Sunday, participants from across B.C. and Washington State will converge in Ladner for the 14th annual quilt walk and classic car show. “Everything is on board for this year,” said car show organizer Jim Crouch. “We have well over 150 vehicles registered so far. I hope we can crack the 400 mark. That would be a record for us. Lots of people tend to leave the registration to the last moment, but it’s

going to be a great show.” There are more than 18 different vehicle classes with trophies up for grabs to the tops in each class. The show is open to all classic cars, trucks and motorcycles. Those that have pre-registered receive a gift bag stuffed with giveaways and coupons from local merchants and sponsors. There is also 90 gift bags for quilt show participants. “The gift bags are something we have done right from the start. It’s a nice

tradition,” added Crouch. Crouch said there are a number of factors that make the Ladner quilt walk and car show a unique event, chief among them is the community itself. “It’s the town. Everyone likes Ladner, so when there is an event everyone comes,” said Crouch. “The quilts…people love looking at the quilts, so the wives can come too. It’s just not about the cars. Everyone is friendly in Ladner, so it’s a great atmosphere. There is

so much here to offer. We have the cars, the quilts, the pin-up girls, live music and all the food trucks with great food to eat, so something for everyone.” And besides all of the out of town participants, local car owners and enthusiasts come out in droves too. “A lot of local guys from town go way back and many don’t show off their cars that much, but they come out for this Ladner show,” he said. “There are some great cars locally. hours: 10-2

Acclimatize Your Skin Before the summer sun gets to you!!! Let Us Get Real. The first thing to understand is that u.v. whether from the sun or bulbs is the same. A photon of light is a photon of light. There is no magic change to make a sunbed more risky than the solar uv light. Our sunbeds provide a U.V. spectrum similar to solar uv at noon - 95% UVA and 5% UVB, the strength of the dose may be stronger but the duration is shorter which is why you don’t burn if a sunbed is used properly. In fact cancer care Ontario, in a 2013 report on ultraviolet radiation reported that the melanoma risk for outdoor exposure was 61% versus 15% for indoor devices when used properly. So based on this research, using a sunbed is 4 times less risky than outdoor sun exposure. That is certainly a different message than what is often reported for the risk of indoor sunbed

use. Is there a “hidden agenda”? - just

asking!

See www.tanresponsibly.ca for a complete set of standards. Our staff have been trained extensively in North American standards. Our clients tell us a “base tan” before their holidays and summer works for them.

The Lounge Hounds are returning to the quilt walk and car show.

Live music and food add to festival atmosphere

Rocking music and good eats are all a big part of this year’s Quilt Walk and Car Show. Back again are two popular acts that will add to the festival atmosphere on Sunday in Ladner Village. The Lounge Hounds have been rockin’ the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland since 2008. Singer and guitarist Keith Marr, bassist Evan Duncan and drummer Tyson Finley came together in and just after high school with their shared love of original rock & roll, R&B and 60s pop music. A talented multiinstrumentalist, frontman Marr cut his musical teeth in a household headed by its own band leader.

His father founded The Hornets, an R&B pop act, in the U.K. longer than three decades ago. Duncan swings the deep grooves on both standup and conventional bass while Finley locks it down with steady driving backbeats sprinkled with big-band jazz styling on drums. International awardwinning Elvis tribute artist Ben Klein also returns. Growing up as the only child of musical parents, he has been singing, dancing and acting all of his life. Through the years, he also learned to play drums, bass guitar, piano and acoustic guitar. Look for both acts performing throughout the

day as well as lending their talents to the stage show for the Pin-Up Pageant. Food vendors There will be plenty of great food and drink to satisfy anyone’s tastes on Sunday. Confirmed food vendors include: The Melt Shop (grilled cheese), Hot Rod Smokies, Hugs by Mollie’s Minis (gourmet mini donuts), Mike’s Perfect Perogy’s, Lemon Heaven Beverages and the Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club. You can also check out many of the Village restaurants that feature brick oven pizza, Turkish food, sushi, pho, fish and chips, burgers, salads and ice cold beer.

Is this “No U.V. light message the same as : Don’t use salt! To quickly be replaced by “oh a little salt is o.k.” or don’t use butter to be replaced later by “oh a little butter is good for you” or red wine is bad to soon be replaced by “a little red wine is good for our digestion.” Or “Don’t eat red meat or too much fat” to be replaced by, (Front Page April 3, 2016 Province) “We should be eating more fat and red meat.” How long do we have to wait before we are told oh! By the way we do need U.V. light in healthy moderate doses? With all these second thoughts are we finally getting real? Are we being lead by the nose? -

still just asking!

The answer might be with “Dr. W. B. Grant, Sunarc. Why is the public misinformed about UV and vitamin D”? Visit www.sunarc.org/public%20misinformed.htm Look at these outdoor Burners, they probably lost the fun of their next 3 days of vacation they did not sleep easy for a few nights.

Ladner edges Alberta champs for first Western Canadian title in 19 years MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Ladner Pioneers Senior “C” lacrosse team is Western Canadian champions for the first time in 19 years. The Pioneers captured the Alcan Cup on the weekend in Coquitlam with a thrilling 10-9 victory over Alberta powerhouse Airdrie Mohawks in the championship game. Ladner entered the 10-team tournament coming off a 12-3-3 regular season in the West Central Senior Lacrosse Association that plays on Saturday nights out of Port Coquitlam. The run to the title actually began with a 13-10 loss to Airdrie on Friday afternoon in what proved to be a fast-paced game. The Pioneers then battled their

way back into contention with a big 13-4 win later that night over the Mission Cedarkings. It was followed by a 10-3 triumph on Saturday afternoon over the Lower Mainland Mutts — a team featuring players from Langley, Burnaby and Richmond. That set the stage for a pivotal and must-win game against league rival Coquitlam Cobras — a team Ladner had not beat all season. The boys clutched up to produce a 9-7 win, clinching second spot in their pool group and a Sunday morning semi-final date with defending Alcan Cup champions Port Moody. In an absolute thriller, Port Moody looked like it was on its way to victory after taking a 7-6 lead on a power play goal with just 35 seconds left. However, the Pioneers pulled their goalie and

Spencer Bianchini produced the equalizer with 15 seconds remaining. That sent the game into a 10-minute non-sudden overtime period. Paul Bains broke the deadlock at the six minute mark and goaltender Allan McLucas took over from there with some terrific play down the stretch, including a clutch save in the dying seconds. The rematch with Airdrie was tied at 5-5 after 40 minutes when Ladner exploded for a 10-5 advantage, led by the offensive efforts of Randy Jones, Jesse Rumeo, Spencer Bennett and Ryan Chan. The Mohawks showed why they were riding a 55-game unbeaten streak — dating back to three seasons in the Alberta league — by fighting back within a goal. They had a great chance to

equalize in the dying seconds but McLucas came up with a spectacular diving stick save to preserve the win and the championship. Cam Kirkbride is the Pioneers’ GM and playing coach. He is assisted by Bennett while Rajan Singh is the team captain. The rest of the roster for the tournament featured: Andrew Sinclair (AC), Quinn Waddington (AC), Carter Mains, Colten Burr, Liam Bianchini, Quin Bianchini, Matt Gatto, Nathan Wilson, Dylan Sharpe, Nathan Macedo, Fino Gentile, Phil Guiria, Nico Ballarin, Cam Summers, Curtis Fraser and Reece Griffing. Others contributing throughout the regular season were: Matt Holding, Patrick Butler, Jon Arthur, Garett Holmes, Travis Bianchini, Kyle Eyolfson and Ryland Davidson. The team trainer is Meaghan Snow.

Ladner falls to Nanaimo in OT thriller of WCSLA finals

It was overtime heartbreak in the Ladner Pioneers’ bid to repeat as West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association champions. The Nanaimo Timbermen rallied to win the final two games of the best-of-three series — both in overtime — including a 14-13 thriller on their home floor Tuesday night. Ladner opened up a 12-9 third period lead before the Timbermen rallied behind the

efforts of Jeff Shattler. The Saskatchewan Rush star and National Lacrosse League playoff MVP scored seven times, including the game tying and winning goals. He broke a 13-13 deadlock with 1:17 remaining in the non-sudden death overtime period. It was his first game of the playoffs. The result ruined a terrific effort by a Ladner

team that was missing eight regulars. In game two last Saturday at Sungod, twice the Timbermen rallied back from third period deficits to eventually win 12-11 and extend the series. Both teams are headed to the President’s Cup national senior “B” championships in Nanaimo. That tournament starts Aug. 26.

2001 Heat earn bronze at U19 Nationals

Delta girls prevents an Ontario podium sweep in 24-team championship at Softball City Delta 2001 Heat have reached the national podium for the second straight season, this time as a first-year team at the U19 level. The rep “A” girls’ fastpitch team capped a memorable week at Softball City in South Surrey by earning a bronze medal at the Canadian Championships. The feat came a year after the Heat captured the U16 national title on home soil. Typically, teams would have to bide their time moving up to an older level, especially a three-year division, however, this talented squad proved otherwise. Delta earned a berth in the championship round by going 6-1-0 in preliminary play. It was then a steady diet of Ontario teams and a thrilling win over a B.C. rival to secure a medal. The Heat began the playoffs as the No. 4 seed and opened against the powerhouse Waterloo Ghosts. The Ontario champions handed them an 8-1 loss a day earlier to close out round-robin play and this time produced a 5-1 victory on their way to capturing gold with a perfect 10-0-0 record. Delta was now in must-win mode in the double knockout

A year removed from winning the U16 Candian championship, the 2001 Delta Heat stepped up to the three-year U19 division and won bronze at nationals in South Surrey last weekend. format. It set the stage for a thrilling walk-off hit by Veronica Sawatzky in a 10-9 victory over the White Rock 1999 Renegades on Saturday afternoon. The wild affair saw White Rock score six times in the third inning to take

a 9-1 lead before the Heat came storming back, highlighted by six of their own in the fourth inning. Delta then secured a bronze medal with another nail-biter, this time a 5-4 win over the Oakville Angels on Sunday

morning. The difference was the Heat scoring in the top of the seventh to break a 4-4 deadlock. The Heat returned to the field immediately to face the rested Windsor Wildcats with a berth in the final against Waterloo on the line.

The Ontario silver medalists broke a tight game open with three runs in the sixth. Delta managed one in the top of the seventh but would get no closer. Earlier in round-robin play, Delta rolled to six straight victories to open the tournament against Lloydminster Liners (14-4), Estevan Slammers (10-0), Fraser Valley 2001 Fusion (5-4), Fraser Valley 2000 Fusion (8-1), Edmonton Warriors (10-0) and Manitoba Thunder (14-2). Kianna Jones led the potent offence with four home runs, 11 RBI and a .469 average. Emily Horne added a pair of homers, nine RBI and a .476 average. Hanna Hansen also had two home runs, while Aymee Godmaire had a solo blast. Gabrielle finished with a sizzling .548 average and seven RBI. Megan Hendrickson hit .351 with 13 runs scored. Jessie Weststrate hit .345. Other key contributors were Autaum Hilyer, Olivia Malesku, Rawnie Weststrate and Stephanie Schina. In the pitching circle, Rawnie went 4-0 with 30 strikeouts and a 1.81 era. Jones and Hendrickson also picked up wins.

Islanders trio helps Canada win gold at World Juniors

The Delta Islanders trio of Brody Harris, Haiden Dickson and Brendan Szabo helped Canada capture gold at the 2018 IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championship in Saskatoon. Canada capped a perfect run in the threeteam tournament with a 15-10 win over Iroquois in Sunday night’s final played at Sasktel Centre. All three boys had major roles in Canada’ triumph. Harris’ terrific performance in net not only earned him player-ofthe-game honours but locked up a spot on the All-Tournament Team as well. He finished the night with 59 stops and a superb save percentage of .855 as Canada was actually outshot 69-45. Making those numbers even more impressive were the quality of scoring chances he faced — not only stopping original shots but showcasing his quickness on rebounds as well.

(Left to right) Brody Harris, Haiden Dickson and Brendan Szabo helped Canada win gold in Saskatoon. Canada’s transition game produced a whopping 10 goals from defenders on the night including a hat trick from Szabo. Among them was a key momentum-changing tally after he took an outlet pass from Harris. Canada would go on to score four unanswered goals and never looked back.

Szabo finished the tournament with nine points, including four goals. Dickson capped an outstanding championship with a pair in the final, including one in spectacular fashion as he soared through the air. His hat trick in Friday’s 16-7 win over the United States earned him player-of-thegame honours.

REMEMBRANCES IN MEMORIAM IN MEMORY OF A SPECIAL FRIEND Gary Baker who passed away August 15, 2005 Lovingly remembered & missed: Euny and Dave

OBITUARIES

May the Sunshine of Comfort Dispel the Clouds of Despair

OBITUARIES BLINKHORN, William Harry ‘Blinky’ September 22, 1940 August 8, 2018 We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of Bill on August 8th, 2018. He is survived by his wife Maureen of 36 years, sister Darlene (George), daughter Karen, son Brent, step-daughter Trisha, grandsons Ryley (Tracey), Clinton and Jakob and great-granddaughter Alexis, sister-in-law Beverly and many loved nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father Harry and mother Dolly, brother Tom, sister Lorraine and step-son Kevin. Bill is remembered for his dedication to hard work, to the support he offered family and friends and to his contributions to the City of Vancouver’s Engineering Department which he was an integral part of for 35 years. His passion for the mountains made his cabin in Manning Park his favourite retreat, welcoming family and friends for year round adventures.

MONTGOMERY, Theresa Marie June 21, 1921 - July 31, 2018 Theresa Marie Montgomery passed away on July 31st, at the age of 97. She was predeceased by her husband Clifford, daughters Sharon and Valerie, grandson Clayton Montgomery and great grandchild Jodi Martin. She is survived by her children Dauwayne, Phyllis, Diana, Larry, Twylia, Eric and Clifford. She was a loving grandmother to 14 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She will always be remembered for her loving kindness, her beautiful smile, sense of humour and her love for her family. She dedicated her life to others selflessly. She will be sadly missed by those who knew her. A memorial service for family will be held at Ocean View (date to be determined). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

DUBE, Darcy Joseph Gerard April 21, 1956 - August 6, 2018

RAMSAY, Eleanor Margaret February 8, 1931 − August 8, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Eleanor Ramsay from metastatic ovarian cancer. She is predeceased by her sons, David & Kelly and daughter, Patricia. Survived by: Michael, her loving husband of 67 years; her beloved children, Susan and Stuart (Jennifer); her much loved and adored grandchildren, Nicole (Gerry), Kayla, Lauren, Erin; and great grandson, Carter. Eleanor was born in Vancouver, an only child. She attended Point Grey Jr High, Magee High School (class of ’49) & UBC. Affectionately known as "Ellie" by her friends, she had an inherent sense of style and grace. She was a woman of great class and character and was loved by all those that knew her. Her infectious good humour endeared her to friends and strangers alike. We feel privileged to have known Eleanor and to have loved and been loved by her. There will be no service at her request, but hope that those that knew her would raise a glass in her honour. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Cancer Agency or consider doing an act of kindness in her memory. Cremation direct, 404−8705 Young Road, Chilliwack.

Darcy went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Aug 6, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Powell River, BC on April 21, 1956. He resided there until graduation and then moved to Richmond, BC where he met his wife, Glenda of 38 years. Darcy is survived by his four daughters, Janelle (Cory) Bennett, Christa (Wayne) Hiebert, Sherilyn, Kathleen and five grand-daughters, Natalia, Emily, Laelle, Cali and Roxana, brother, Norm (Bettylou), sister Jerrene (Hector) and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is pre-deceased by his father Jerry, mother Violet and brother Mark. Darcy’s larger than life personality filled the room while his loving embrace left a memorable impression on everyone he encountered. Growing up on the Pacific Coast he always had an incredible love for the ocean, fishing, and outdoors. His love and passion for God propelled him into fulltime ministry planting a local church, Destiny Centre as well as many around the world. Alongside his wife, they established Kingdom Harvest Ministries International which has provided humanitarian relief worldwide. The legacy of his love for God and family, cherished friendships, zest for life, and his thrill of adventure will continue to live on through the many lives he has touched.

TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment.
