Harvie swaps chairs at hall Former city manager is Delta’s new mayor following Saturday’s civic election SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta council is about to enter the George Harvie era. After a heated civic election campaign, the former city manager emerged the winner last Saturday as he took the mayor’s seat with almost 40 per cent of the vote, helped largely by a powerful showing in North Delta. Four members of his Achieving For Delta slate were elected to Delta council and another three to the Delta board of education. Six of the top eight vote getters in the council race were members of his ticket. In an interview with the Optimist this week, Harvie, who had just completed a busy day removing his campaign signs, credited the incredibly hard work of all his candidates and volunteers who knew the best way to reach people was by pounding the pavement and knocking on as many doors as possible. Thanks to the good weather, they were able to reach many households, he said. “I wasn’t too surprised but very pleased with the result but our feedback at the doors, and we knocked on thousands and thousands of doors, showed really strong support for us. We also took the time to explain our platform, including Delta Families First, like every other meeting of council in North Delta and school board, and I thought we were resonating very well with people,” Harvie said. “We’ve had a really great team. We had super chemistry amongst us and during an election you’ll have your highs and your lows, but when you saw one of your team members at a low, we’d be there to support that person.

George Harvie was in a celebratory mood Saturday night at Tsawwassen Springs after besting five other candidates in Delta’s mayoral race. Collectively we made this happen. It wasn’t one individual, it was all about the team and the strength of the team who all went out door knocking. At the times people couldn’t door knock, they did other things, so there was total contribution from everyone.” As far as taking part in a political campaign after spending almost two decades as city hall’s top staffer and advisor to council, Harvie said he knew what to expect and what was expected of him. “Having Mayor (Lois) Jackson there too was a great support for our team members who haven’t gone through this before. I managed to maintain my running and my fitness which helped me insofar as keeping my endurance up, so everything worked out really well,” he explained. As far as priorities for
his new council, Harvie noted it starts with his 90-day implementation plan that he will discuss with council.
MAYOR’S RACE George Harvie: 12,325 Jim Cessford: 10,533 Sylvia Bishop: 7,353 Moneca Kolvyn: 553 Vytas Vaitkus: 221 Alex Megalos: 174
“I know I’m united with everybody on council who was elected who agrees we need to have that bridge in place. I believe everybody on council supports that we need to re-engineer the building permit application process, so those are the two top priorities I have at this time,” he said. Harvie would also like to see his Delta Families First policy implemented. He said people have been tell-
ing him the current threeday window for Delta residents to register first for civic programs simply isn’t enough, so he’d like to see that expanded to two weeks. He said he also heard concerns about the number of people outside of Delta using recreation centres that are subsidized by Delta taxpayers. “It’s from Surrey, from Tsawwassen First Nations which is growing rapidly, and Richmond. We want to ensure there’s a rate for Delta taxpayers and a separate outside rate. Delta taxpayers shouldn’t be paying the entire operational costs for a facility that is widely used by others outside Delta.” Among the other issues Harvie plans to tackle is housing by working with local builders and identifying opportunities for development in town centres. Scott Road, in par-
ticular, is an area that can start making a difference “right away,” according to the mayor-elect. Council will also have to hire a new city manager as several senior staff members took turns covering the position since Harvie left city hall 10 months ago. A Tsawwassen resident, Harvie came from the City of Burnaby to be Delta’s chief administrative officer in 2002. Saturday’s election saw Harvie win big in North Delta where he was more than 2,000 votes ahead of former police chief Jim Cessford, his nearest competitor. Harvie won Tsawwassen by 79 votes, while he was 349 votes behind Cessford in Ladner. Voter turnout was 43.3 per cent, up considerably from four years ago. The inaugural meeting of the new council will be Monday, Nov. 5.

No regrets from those who fell short Jim Cessford and Sylvia Bishop pleased with campaigns, accept that community has spoken IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Jim Cessford is proud of his team and the campaign his Independents Working for You slate ran. Cessford finished second in the mayor’s race almost 1,800 votes behind Achieving For Delta’s George Harvie. Two-term councillor Sylvia Bishop of Team Delta finished third followed distantly by independent candidates Moneca Kolvyn, Vytas Vaitkus and Alex Megalos. “I said right from the start that I would listen to the public and hear what they have to say and then I would do what I could to reflect that,” said Cessford. “The community has spoken and they have said they want George Harvie to be mayor and I support that — I support what the community wants. Congratulations to them.” Cessford said he has no regrets about the campaign. “We wouldn’t do any-
thing different. We talked about this as a team and there are no regrets,” he said. “We gave our heart and soul and did our very best in the interests of the community. Our team was great, our signs were great, social media was great, so we accept the results. “I urge all the residents who supported us to join me in not only congratulating George Harvie and team, but offering our new mayor our hands in friendship and trust that we will support their efforts in the coming years.” Bishop also said she has no regrets about the campaign. “We always worked with the resources we had and the direction of the campaign we had laid out and responded along the way to the best of our ability,” said Bishop. “This is the nature of politics. There were six candidates with three running neck and neck for a while, but there can only be one winner, so I have no regrets
Sylvia Bishop other than not winning, of course. “We have to acknowledge the hard work of George Harvie’s team. Quite frankly, Team Delta didn’t get enough votes and that’s why we lost. Democracy is democracy.” Bishop said she is proud of her time on council. “It was an honour and a privilege to be elected the first time and an honour to be re-elected in 2014,” she said. “There are many things that I’m very proud of, but I didn’t do them alone, you are only one vote, so it means I was able to collaborate with

Jim Cessford carried Ladner, but his mayoral bid fell short in North Delta. like-minded councillors to get things done. “There are lots of things I’m proud of, but I never made a list, because I felt my job was to get out there in the community and make decisions that reflected the community’s
desires. I’m very proud of my seven years, but a chapter has closed and another one is opening.” As to what the future might hold, Bishop said that remains unclear. “The only commitment I have made to myself is
to make no decisions until the end of the year. I’ve had a life that has been rich in opportunities and while I’m disappointed I was not elected mayor, I’m not finished, I just don’t know what the next project is.”

Mayor’s slate holds majority on council
Guichon tops polls, while Jackson wins council seat after 19 years in top job IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
It will be a mixture of youth and experience for the next four years on Delta council. Saturday’s civic election saw four of Achieving for Delta’s six council candidates elected with Alicia Guichon topping the polls. She was followed by Lois Jackson, who won a council seat after 19 years as mayor, and former fire chief Dan Copeland. Dylan Kruger, who at 23 is the youngest person ever elected to council, claimed the sixth spot. Finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, were incumbents Jeannie Kanakos and Bruce McDonald, who both ran on the Independents Working for You slate. Guichon said she is honoured for the opportunity to serve the community on council. “The 10 days before the election it started to sink in,” she said. “I went into this with no expectations.
I knew I would work hard, give it my 100 per cent and see what happens. Once the advance polls came in I was shocked. I’m honestly overwhelmed by the support. “With eight of our 11 team members between council and school board elected, it’s amazing.” Copeland said after serving the community for 36 years as a firefighter and, more recently, as fire chief, he is humbled to have the opportunity to continue with his passion for public service. “I’m very excited for the opportunity. We worked hard and talked to a lot of people,” said Copeland. “I see this role — public service — as an extension of my work with the fire department. I have a passion for public service and I’m looking forward to this role. I have a lot to learn about the process, but I’m up for this challenge.” Kruger admitted the fact he is the youngest person ever to be elected to Delta council is still setting in.

Former fire chief Dan Copeland claimed a council seat in Saturday’s civic election. “It’s a huge honour. I knew that I would have to work that much harder as a young person with less name recognition,” he said. “I think the big winners of Saturday are going to be young families in our community who will finally see themselves on council and have representation between Alicia and myself. Jackson said she is thrilled with the results and can’t wait to get to work with the new council.

“This new role is going to be a very good thing for me and hopefully the community as well,” said Jackson. “It’s time to pass the torch. I’ve very happy to take on the elder role. We are very lucky in this country of Canada that we have an example from First Nations who revere their elders in a way that puts them in the front. The First Nations go to their elders before they make major decisions so hopefully that will put us in

good stead.” McDonald admitted he was disappointed with the results. “I had hopes that we could make a whole bunch of changes, but the people have spoken and you have to deal with what you deal with and you keep on trucking,” he said. “There is going to be a stiff learning curve for a lot of people. Will see where it goes.” Kanakos called the results a new era for Delta. “I think there is a balance on the new council because we have myself, Bruce and Lois and then some new people, and a mayor who has experience at city hall,” she said. “Hopefully we will get things done, develop some relationships and go from there.” Harvie said one of the first orders of business is to put what at times was a divisive campaign in the past and move forward in a positive way. “We’ll be reaching out and working with them

Three first-time candidates join board
Poll-topping chair Laura Dixon welcomes Achieving For Delta newcomers SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It’s a new look for the Delta board of education. Saturday’s civic election saw three first-time candidates join the board, while incumbents Dale Saip and Rhiannon Bennett weren’t re-elected. New to the board are Jessie Dosanjh, Erica Beard and Daniel Boisvert, all members of the Achieving For Delta ticket that saw George Harvie become mayor and four on his slate win council seats. While that slate now has a presence on school board, it won’t have a majority like it has on council. The leading vote getter for school board was once again Laura Dixon, the current board chair, followed by incumbent Nick Kanakos, both members of the Independents Working For You ticket. Also re-elected were independent Val Windsor, the former Delta Teachers’

Saip each brought to the board, but she is also impressed with the caliber of the new trustees. “We knew we would potentially see some new
blood on the board and we’re pleased that the new trustees are very keen and they have a wide variety of backgrounds. They certainly seem very well

intentioned as far as public education. Of course, it’s going to be a whole new avenue in their lives and it’s going to be a steep learning curve and we’re already in the midst of laying out orientation dates and reaching out to them,” she said. Once the results were final on Saturday, Beard said she was excited to have made it onto the school board and her slate “will do a number of positive moves for Delta.” Funding issues, including the province’s plan to change the funding allocation formula, will once again be top of mind for the next school board. It remains to be seen how the new dynamic of the board will impact other initiatives that have been pushed, in particular getting the city to be involved in building a track facility in North Delta. The board had made public the need for the city to be involved, having reached a cost-

he characters were different, but the plot line was strikingly familiar. Saturday’s civic election, or at least the often-heated mayor’s race, ended up looking a lot like elections so far this century when Lois Jackson would tread water in South Delta and then clean up in North Delta. This time around George Harvie played the role of Jackson and Jim Cessford took on the part of her past challengers. Harvie won six of the eight polling stations in Tsawwassen, but the margins were quite small so he took the community by just 79 votes. Cessford won six of seven of the Ladner polling stations to win that community by 349 votes. Add it all up and after almost 12,000 votes were cast for mayor in South Delta, there was only a 270-vote difference between the top two. North Delta was, once again, an entirely different story as Harvie took that community by more than 2,000 votes. He won 12 of 14 polling stations, many rather convincingly, with Cessford only triumphant in a pair of Sunshine Hills stations. As much as the mayor’s race was another tale of two Deltas, there was far more consensus when it came to who voters thought should serve on Delta council as the six successful council candidates were in the top six at all seven Ladner polling stations. There were slight variations in Tsawwassen, where local optometrist Joan Hansen cracked the top six at all polls, and North Delta, but the three communities were generally in agreement on who should serve on council. Alicia Guichon made quite the splash as she topped every poll in Ladner and Tsawwassen, which is no small feat for a political veteran let alone a council newcomer trying to stand out in a field of 20 candidates. It’s worth noting the six independents in the council race occupied the bottom six spots. Saturday’s election also ended a 19-year run on council for Robert Campbell and a three-decade stint on school board for Dale Saip. As well, third place mayoral finisher Sylvia Bishop is out of civic politics after serving seven years on council. The trio has devoted an enormous amount of time and effort over the years to making Delta a better place to live, so although they won’t continue to serve, they’re deserving of our gratitude.
At least I’m not having to write how I lost the election, again
W
ell, there it is. Election 2018 is in the history books. We have a new mayor – congratulations to George Harvie – half a new council and three new school trustees. A couple of long-time incumbents lost seats this time, which hasn’t happened for many, many elections. The first column I ever wrote for this space was about losing the election in 2011. My 50th column was about losing the election in 2014. Maybe that’s why I didn’t run, the thought of my next article being about losing another election was too much to stomach. After two attempts, I decided to sit this one out. It is a lot of dedication, effort, expense and just plain hard work to run in an election, and doing it as an independent makes it that much tougher. Not only do you have the responsibility of attending all-candidates meetings, door knocking and just trying to get your name out there, you also have the deal with all the signs. There were many late nights after work out in the community pounding signs into the ground. With so many candidates, and so few prime locations, it becomes a bit of a sea of colour. What’s worse is not winning, and still having to drive around and pick them all up that day
Community Comment BRAD SHERWIN
after. Ouch. I still have a storage shed full of signs and lumber. I reused them in 2014, and fared no better than the time before. I was trying to think of a good use for them instead of just recycling them. I heard someone talk about shelter for homeless, although I don’t want to subject anyone having to look at my name day in, day out. Once every six weeks here is enough. Our next big decision is how we will vote provincially in the future. I have stated before, I’m not a fan of proportional representation. It’s difficult to analyze the impacts of pro-rep in the current context. I get very frustrated when someone, typically in the media, says, “If we had proportional representation, the outcome would have been this.” It’s impossible to gauge the outcome, and irresponsible to speculate, because the context will be so very, very differ-
ent under a new system. Even now, there are more than just the three main parties, but more will come out under a new system. Some will be on the fringes of politics, both left and right, and now have a chance at getting a seat, as long as they convince enough people around the province to tick a box for the party, not the person. Who will end up in the legislature? Not up to us to decide. That, to me, isn’t very good democracy. I want to know who I’m voting for, and who will represent me. That’s my choice to make. A political party is already a compromise, so better to control the various viewpoints within the party, instead of within the legislature. And while we might say there will never be another Vicki Huntington, there will definitely never be another independent MLA, unless they show up on every ballot in the province. Congratulations to all those who won a seat, and thanks to those who ran and didn’t win. Your commitment to Delta is appreciated. And that makes you all winners. Common courtesy badly needs a shot in the arm
Editor: Chivalry is dead, along with common courtesy. It is flu shot season, and getting your vaccine at the local pharmacy is extremely efficient for the most part, especially when people are both on time for their appointments and they have their medical forms filled out in advance, as they ask you to do. I arrived for my shot, four minutes ahead of time, form in hand. The pharmacist then called out for the “gentleman” next to
me who had just arrived, late, no form completed. Now, erroneously, in my humble opinion, the pharmacist decided to wait for said “gentleman,” tardy as he was, and by the time he had completed his form, I could have been inoculated several times over. But what struck me most was his exceptional lack of consideration. Had the situation been reversed, I would have smiled politely, told him to go on ahead, and continued with filling out the form. That is just common
courtesy. As for the male/female dynamic, I raised my boys to open doors, ladies first, and taught them every other rule of basic etiquette pertaining to gender relations. Old school, I know. But I like it. Obviously it is has gone the way of the dinosaurs. Be that as it may, let’s at least practice some common sense in the name of efficiency. And let’s be courteous to one another. It makes the world a friendlier place to live. Shae Mills

MLA shouldn’t tell constituents how to vote
Editor: I have been rather disgusted by the social media account of Delta South MLA Ian Paton in recent weeks. Our representative in Victoria and his staff have taken up the cause of slagging the upcoming referendum on proportional representation by spreading disinformation and, in an egregious affront to democracy, telling his constituents how to vote. In his comment made
Sept. 24 on his Facebook page, Paton wrote to “remember to vote no on proportional representation.” I cannot fathom how unprofessional and antidemocratic this comment is as well as the farce that was the town hall on PR held on Sept. 18. It is clearly a window into how our MLA thinks of his constituents and how deeply the BC Liberal Party fears electoral reform. After all, our MLA was elected with 44 per
cent of the popular vote in this riding in 2017. This pandering, solicitous, desperate behaviour cannot be tolerated in our elected officials. Whether or not you agree with PR, our own MLA telling us how to vote is an insult to democracy. The hard-working, taxpaying people of Delta elected an MLA to be our voice in Victoria and it is for us to decide how to vote, not him. Niko Condonopoulos
Homeowner on TFN land left without voice
Editor: With the civic election looming, I was greatly anticipating the opportunity to exercise my once every four years civic rights. Needless to say I was utterly surprised when I was advised that my son and I could only vote for school trustees, not for mayor or city council. We were advised that because we purchased a house in the subdivision of Tsawwassen Shores,
which is on Tsawwassen First Nation land, we are not eligible to vote for civic officials. No one, of course, had advised us of this violation of our rights before we moved in, nor are we allowed to vote in the Tsawwassen First Nation elections. I feel totally infringed upon as someone without a voice in my community where my kids grew up, where I lived for over 24 years, where I still
dine, entertain, shop and drive through each and every day. They (Tsawwassen Shores and Aquilini Development) are still selling the last phase of the development. I believe it is prudent for them to advise potential purchasers what it actually costs to live in this development. Savings of GST and other taxes are not worth the despoliation of my rights. Timing is everything when it comes to traffic signals
Editor: On my recent visit to Toronto, I observed some difference in the timing of the traffic signals, especially in the timing of the pedestrian crossing signal. On inquiry I was informed the local governing bodies in charge of
the traffic signals set the pedestrian crossing signal to come on approximately five seconds before the lights change for the main traffic. It appears that some motorists were trying to beat the pedestrian crossing signal, especially when taking the right turn,
and few accidents were reported because of that. I was unable to obtain any statistics on this minor change, however a minor change that costs nothing to implement, even if it saves one accident, is worth implementing. R.H. (Rusty) Deshmukh
Right turns go wrong when drivers in too much of a hurry
Editor: Re: Grieving family appeals to drivers, letter to the editor, Oct. 4 I was very touched by B. & T. Pengelly’s plea for drivers to take more caution on the road. My plea is to those driv-
ers who make right hands turns on a yellow light or a red light. Right hand turns at stop signs are even more abused. Remember when allowing for time to pass, we used to say, “One thousand, two thousand?”
Then we would proceed with what we were doing. Why can we not repeat “one thousand, two thousand” before we turn right on that red light or stop sign? Works for me. Margot Millen

Civic Election
Saturday’s civic election brought several decades of community service to the end for two local politicians. Robert Campbell saw his 19-year run on Delta council come to an end, while Dale Saip’s time as a school trustee dates back to 1987. “I had a pretty good three decades,” Saip told the Optimist. “This is the first time that I have been part of an election where we had school board and council candidates as part of the same slate. We’ve had slates before for school board, but when you look at it six of seven (successful) candidates were part of or supported by slates, so I was up against that, but it’s fine. I actually had more votes than I had last time, but this time we had more voters.” Saip finished 10th, more than 2,000 votes back of the seventh and final seat. He said he is very happy with the make-up of the new board. “The three new trustees, they seem great and seem like great people, so congratulations and best of luck to them. I will be meeting with the new trustees and give them any advice. I’ll be there to encourage them any way I can.” Saip said he is very proud of his work on the board. “When I first ran for school board I had a oneyear-old daughter who is now the mother of my

I ran also because Delta was not looked upon too favourably as a school district,” he said. “Our boards disagreed at times, but for the most part we built by consensus. I was six or seven terms as chair and we did a good job of balancing what the community wanted and what we could afford. I always did what I thought I needed to do. I don’t have any regrets.” Campbell is only the third sitting councillor in Delta in the last two decades to not get reelected. “I’m disappointed, but I’m ready to move on. I look forward to pursuing other opportunities,” he said. “I know everyone worked hard and did their best to get elected.” Campbell said the purchase of Burns Bog was a major accomplishment

for Delta and a real highlight during his years on council. “Other than that I just so much enjoyed and I’m proud of my time on the parks, recreation and culture commission. That, to me, is the long-term accomplishment,” he said. “I wouldn’t have done this if it wasn’t rewarding. It was an absolutely tremendous experience. I’m grateful to the voters for electing me six times.” Coun. Sylvia Bishop, who finished third in the mayoral race and ran with Campbell on the Team Delta slate, said his experience will be greatly missed. “In my experience his dedication and passion for Delta’s parks, recreation and culture facilities — I don’t think there is anybody who knows more broadly or deeply the
issues that he does,” said Bishop. “That will be a vacancy that will be hard to fill. Robert has made a phenomenal contribution, often in a quiet and understated way. Some politicians are loud and full of bravado and then there are the quiet ones who make meaningful contributions and Robert is one of those kinds.” Also going down to defeat in last Saturday’s election was school trustee Rhiannon Bennett, who served one term. “Certainly disappointed in the result, but I was very happy with the campaign and what we stood for as a team during the election,” she said. “I wish I could have continued on the board. I felt there was much more for me to accomplish. We were invested in the work and had long-term goals for the future.” Bennett said she will continue to be engaged and has not ruled out running again in four years. “My daughter will be entering the school system in three years, so I want to ensure she is entering a system that will honour and value her as an Indigenous woman,” she added. “I was also disappointed that this election was won by privilege and money and not by the most compassionate and competent people. “To see Joe Muego fall below the line while Laura (Dixon) and Nick (Kanakos) topped the polls — that was upsetting because there was no need to see such a discrepancy in the results.”

About those resolutions…
October is almost finished. In no time, this year will be over and our thoughts will be focused on 2019. So before we get caught in the force of that end-ofyear current, let’s reflect on what we wanted to see happen in 2018. What goals or resolutions did you set for this year? Have you accomplished them? Are you close? Some of the goals I set for this year were easily achievable in a whole year, but are impossible in two months. Now I have a choice. I can shrug them off and start thinking of next year, or I can start on
Minister’s Minute

them today. If those goals were important enough for me to make at the beginning of the year, aren’t they worth working on for the
next two months? I may not be able to make the goal, but I can make progress. What goals did you make this year: exercise more, lose weight, start saving, go to church? Today is a new day. Using the analogy of rest to describe our relationship with God, the Bible tells us: “So God’s rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God. So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today.” (Hebrews 4:6–7, NLT) Today is a new day.

Scouts, who will also be hosting a Christmas tree fundraiser in December. As the troop was just rebooted in 2017, the group is continuing to increase enrollment and fundraise for its programs. “Many troops fundraise for four years for Pacific Jamboree and have an accumulation of funds throughout the year. Unfortunately, as we are restarting the troop, we do not have this luxury and our fundraising has only just begun,” said Shantz. “Registration is due by Dec. 31 and is $550 per participant for the weeklong camp. We do not have sponsorship, nor do we have funds carried over by the Scout troop that folded four years ago.” Shantz said she hopes the community will come out and enjoy their Halloween event and help the troop get to next year’s jamboree.

The 3rd Boundary Bay Scouts are offering up a spooktacular Halloween experience while trying to raise funds for a trip to next year’s Pacific Jamboree. Leaders Dave Riley and Natalie Shantz with the assistance of parent Brent Coleman (who has previously decorated his yard in Boundary Bay for Halloween) have created a spectacular Blood Beach Cemetery, a fundraising event on Halloween night. “Brent has risen to the occasion and has been working hard to help create a location for our community haunting,” said Shantz. “We are very lucky to have Brent on our team as his local business, Brent Coleman Design and Contracting, has given our cemetery the edge we

Tsawwassen children’s author Danielle S. Marcotte will celebrate the launch of her eighth book with a signing in Ladner this weekend. Dedicated to children ages seven to nine, Scamper and the Airplane Thief is a hardcover early reader fiction. Marcotte will be at Black Bond Books between 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday. As is almost always the case, airplanes play a big role in her writing as they are a constant presence in South Delta’s sky. “My son was 16 when he got his wings at Boundary Bay Airport, so we have

But rest assured, he never stole any and is a very cautious pilot, contrary to my main character, Nate.” Nate steals a training plane named Scamper for a joyride. Thanks to the little Luscombe 8f‘s courage and determination, the adventure over the Fraser River ends well. Marcotte now has six children’s books under Vancouver’s Midtown Press’ banner and two more with Manitoba’s Plaines. Both expect to add to those series in the coming months.

Olive, the first published work for North Shore author Linden Carroll, will be shared in a reading and book signing at Black Bond Books in Ladner this Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. Olive is a story of human endurance spanning more
than four generations from the end of the 19th century through to the Second World War during the almost-total destruction of Southampton, a port city in southern England. Carroll said Olive is the spine of this historical novel. Ostracized at birth by her family, Olive’s life is
that of an opportunist and black marketer. She uses her sex, guile and music skills to move up, but there is a price to be paid and the children bear the cost. “I started on the book about five years ago and left my job three years ago because I wanted to write,” said Carroll.

Sidekick seeks cast for play on suffragette movement
On the heels of a very energetic municipal election, The Sidekick Players are auditioning for their second production of the season, The Fighting Days. Written by Wendy Lill and directed for Sidekick by Carroll Lefebvre, it’s the true story of the women’s suffragette movement in Canada. The story takes place in Winnipeg, Manitoba from 1910 to 1917, focusing on the life and work of Francis Marion Beynon, a Manitoba journalist and political activist. When the play opens, Francis is on her way to Winnipeg, leaving behind a sheltered and religious rural childhood. Soon after she arrives she meets Nellie McClung and becomes involved in the Votes-for-Women movement. She also begins work as the women’s page editor for The Rural Review, airing her controversial political views on the editorial page. Suddenly, Canada is involved in the First World

Carroll Lefebvre War and the conscription crisis divides the suffragists. Should all women have the vote or just Dominion-born women who are sending their husbands and sons off to battle? Should women use their votes to push for conscription or to lobby for a swift end to the war? A play about the polarities of public and private lives, and about issues of racism and pacifism within the women’s movement, The Fighting Days deals with timeless moral concerns. Thank you Delta!
F
ROM DAY ONE, I committed to running a positive campaign that put people before politics. It was about ensuring the residents of Delta keep more of their hardearned money by keeping taxes low and Delta debt-free. Keeping generations of Deltans together by providing more housing options for our young families, seniors, and those who need support. Investing in world-class facilities. Protecting our communities to make them even safer. It was about taking bold action on moving forward with a George Massey Bridge, and bringing fairness to North Delta by holding every other council and school board meeting there. As your mayor, that’s what I’ll deliver. And with a renewed council made up of a majority of Achieving for Delta members, we have an opportunity to deliver so much more. We knocked on thousands of doors, made thousands of calls, and attended hundreds of community events. We listened, and we put your concerns and priorities first. We will continue to collaborate and consult with you, the taxpayer and resident of Delta, as we move forward with
our vision – because we know we can achieve results better together. Speaking of together, there are many people behind what we accomplished last night. All achievers in their own right, I owe them my heartfelt thanks: To my team of candidates and their families who worked tirelessly day in and out: Erica Beard, Daniel Boisvert, Dan Copeland, Jessie Dosanjh, Param Grewal, Alicia Guichon, Lois Jackson, Dylan Kruger, Sujay L. Nazareth, and Cal Traversy. While we didn’t get the result we had hoped for in electing Param, Cal, and Sujay, we will ensure that we find a way to use their talents and community commitment in meaningful ways. To one team mate in particular: outgoing mayor Lois Jackson, for her 19 years of service as Delta’s mayor. Our city is a better place because of your leadership. I’ve said it before: every team needs a bridge between yesterday and tomorrow, someone who can help the transition from what has already been achieved to what’s possible for the future. With her extensive record of delivering for the people of Delta, Lois is that person — and I’m proud to

have her support on our new council. To our dedicated, young volunteers who inspired me daily on this campaign with their smarts, hard work, and drive – the future truly is brighter because of you. To Jim Cessford and Sylvia Bishop and their respective teams for putting their names forward for office, which requires courage and hard work. And most importantly, to my amazing wife Gillian, daughter Taryn and her partner Matt, and my son Tim and his wife Davinder, now new parents to Rania – you are what drives me to work harder and do better. I can’t thank you enough for your endless patience and unwavering support. It’s been the privilege of a lifetime to serve as your City Manager. Today, I stand humbled by the trust you’ve given me in taking this one step further as your mayor. Thank you. Together, we will achieve great things for Delta. Ready to work for you. SDSS Interact Club extends outreach to African project
The South Delta Secondary Rotary Interact Club has a new project this year — helping to build a community centre for former child soldiers in Sierra Leone. Interact students have partnered with the Innocence Lost Foundation, which became a registered Canadian charity in 2016. The foundation’s mission is to provide education, skills training and therapy programs to youth that were used as child soldiers. Fazineh Keita and Ava Vanderstarren are the founders of the organization. They met in 2011 at Vancouver Film School. When Keita was a young child, he was kidnapped by a rebel group and forced to become a child soldier. He managed to escape and eventually became a refugee in Guinea. He knew that music, sharing important stories and helping people were his passion, so he created a musical album

FINDS celebrating five years
When the Reach Child and Youth Development Society relocated to the new Lois E. Jackson Kinsmen Centre for Children earlier this year, its social enterprise, FINDS Children’s Exchange, moved in too. Now FINDS is marking its fifth anniversary this month. FINDS has been offering families the opportunity to drop off or
pick up children’s clothing, baby supplies, books, toys, puzzles and games and supplies a wide variety of gently used items to the community. Founder and volunteer manager Marcia McCafferty shared her delight at reaching the five-year mark, saying, “I feel so blessed to be part of our wonderfully generous community.”
Like all social enterprises, FINDS couldn’t have achieved the milestone without dedicated volunteers. From opening the store, assisting customers to sorting donations, volunteers make it possible to have FINDS open Tuesday to Saturday with new merchandise on the shelf every day. All proceeds from FINDS support children in Reach programs.

Richard Moore of Vancouver receives his prize after his duck was the first of 4,500 to reach the finish line in last month’s Tour de Duck. Moore wins a weekend at Salt Spring Island’s five-star Stonehouse B&B. He is shown with David Wong, president of Delta Marine Rescue Society and member of the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (SAR), and SAR members Don McGregor and John Mccorquodale. The third annual Tour de Duck was held Sept. 16 on the Fraser River at Deas Island Regional Park. A separate corporate sponsor race of eight ducks was won by West Coast Seeds Ltd. The all-volunteer Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, which holds the Tour de Duck as a fundraiser, patrols over 600 square miles of water off South Delta.
Over 200 stockings need to be adopted in Christmas program Christmas is still two months away, but it’s already time to start thinking about Stockings For Kids. The 22nd annual program sponsored by the merchants of Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall, Century Group and the South Delta community has set a date for Adopt a Stocking Day. The program makes an appeal to the community to help sponsor a stocking, fill it with appropriate new gifts and return it to the mall for distribution
by Deltassist Family and Community Services. There are over 200 stockings available for adoption this year. Stockings may be picked up during Adopt a Stocking Day on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside the mall near Centre Stage Accessories. Participants in the program will be asked to choose an age and gender they would like to fill a stocking for and then will return the filled stocking to The Smoke & Pop Shop
by Monday, Dec. 3. This year the greatest need is for infants and children 12 to 16. Those wishing to participate, but are unable to attend Adopt a Stocking Day are invited to call the mall promotions office at 604-943-1735 after Nov. 3 to make alternative pick up arrangements. Families wishing to register for Toy Depot assistance can call Deltassist Family and Community Services at 604-946-9526 or 604-594-3455.

Moonlight Gala to raise funds for new CT scanner
Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation’s Moonlight Gala is already sold out. The 20th annual event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Tsawwassen Springs. Funds raised will go towards a new CT scanner for Delta Hospital. Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation, with the support of its donors, has committed to raise
$1.7 million over the next two years for the important diagnostic tool. The current CT scanner at Delta Hospital runs at full capacity and is nearing the end of its lifespan. This year’s theme of Fire & Ice will include spectacular décor, tantalizing entertainment and an unforgettable dining experience. “Our gala committee, led by co-chairs Don
Sangster and Maury Kask, has worked extremely hard to ensure this fundraising event is once again a success,” says Ingrid Barnes, board chair of the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. “We
are so proud of the work of the committee and are excited to see the results of their incredible efforts.” The foundation will use the gala to provide special recognition to the Toigo family, this year’s recipi-
ent of the Tribute Award sponsored by Port of Vancouver. “The Toigos’ generous support over the years has played an important role in Delta Hospital’s ability to provide outstanding
healthcare services to the community,” says Lisa Hoglund, executive director of the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. “They have been remarkable role models for their philanthropic efforts throughout Delta and this province.” Last year’s Moonlight Gala raised a recordbreaking $455,000 for Delta Hospital’s ER needs.

Christmas is next holiday that will come a bit early
Living Matters
BARBARA GUNN
With Thanksgiving this year, there came a revelation. We had opted to do it early — as in, the weekend before. It worked out better for us. It worked out better for the sons. And so, when other folks were still putting their menus together and polishing their silverware and fetching the good dishes, we were chowing down on turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie. The husband proposed a toast and we clinked our glasses, and before you knew it, the non-holiday
holiday was over. The following weekend, when everyone else was mashing potatoes and setting the table and making a last-minute run to the liquor store, we were lounging around watching football. “I like this,” I said. “Me too,” said the husband. “Feels kind of nice to get the heavy lifting out of the way.” I agreed, resisting the inclination to remind him that the lifting — heavy or otherwise — had mostly been my job. “We should do it every year,” he continued. “You know, have the turkey early.” Then the light bulb went on. “Maybe,” I said, “we could also do that at Christmas. I mean, celebrate it early.” The husband snapped his fingers. “Brilliant,” he said. “You mean, like, do the dinner on Christmas Eve?” “No,” I said.
“So maybe early December?” wondered the husband. “That’s what I’m thinking,” I said. ‘”Early, but not too much.” We would wait until the Boy Scouts opened their Christmas tree lot, given we’d want something on which to hang the angels, stars and candy canes. And so, if everything goes according to non-holiday holiday plan, when folks are still roaming the malls and ordering online and wrapping presents and making cookies, we will be reclining in front of the fire, the lifting pretty much over. “So what are we thinking?” asked the husband, glancing at the calendar on his phone. “Either Dec. 1 or 15? Either way, we can watch football the next day. You know, on ‘Boxing Day.’” “Either works,” I said. And so, here we are. Christmas is coming early this year. I’d better let Santa Claus know.

Owning pet helps prevent loneliness among seniors
Pets have been kept for centuries. Statistics from various sources indicate North Americans own millions of dogs, cats, birds, small mammals and reptiles. Pets’ affable nature and loving looks are enough for many people to welcome them into their homes, but the benefits of having a pet extends beyond their appearances and temperaments. • Pets can help prevent loneliness. Loneliness affects people of all ages, but it is particularly problematic among seniors. Older adults who may be isolated can benefit from having a pet around. According to a study published in Aging & Mental Health, older adults who owned pets were 36 per cent less likely to say they were lonely compared to those who didn’t have an animal companion. • Pets can save lives. Pet owners are less likely to say they’re lonely. form various tasks around the house and in the community. Rescue animals assist in finding people after natural disasters. Medical alert pets can help people with debilitating illnesses and assist physically impaired people with everyday tasks. • Pets provide socialization opportunities. A pet can be the common denominator to strike up new friendships and connect with others. Whether walking around the neighbourhood or being part of a pet obedience class or interest group, pets can help their owners expand their social circles. • Pets can help combat
stress. Talking to or stroking a pet can make stress easier to handle. A study from researchers at the State University of New York at Buffalo found that, when conducting a stressful task, people experienced less stress when their pets were with them. Various other studies and data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found having a pet around can lower blood pressure, ease anxiety and may even help to lessen aches and pains. Pets provide unconditional love, which can be beneficial to someone facing depression or posttraumatic stress disorder.

Getting older doesn’t necessarily mean giving up your driver’s licence.
Simple steps will help keep seniors safe behind wheel
A greater sense of independence is often cited as the reason so many young people anxiously await the day they earn their drivers’ licences. But the connection between driving and independence is not lost on seniors, either. Aging can take its toll on drivers, prompting such drivers’ families to feel as if their loved one’s ability to safely operate motor vehicles has been compromised. However, many seniors can still safely operate motor vehicles, and those who do can take steps to ensure they’re as safe as possible behind the wheel. • Avoid driving on days when aches and pains are strong. Aches and pains are common side effects of aging, and seniors know that some days are better than others. Seniors’ ability to control their vehicles may be compromised on days when stiffness, aches or pains seem particularly strong, so it’s best to avoid driving during these times.
Fatigue may set in on days when aches and pains require extra effort to perform relatively simple tasks, and drivers of all ages should avoid driving while tired. • Don’t skip medical checkups. Few seniors may look forward to their medical checkups, but visits to the doctor can reveal issues that can help seniors be safer on the road. Schedule routine vision exams so eyeglass prescriptions are always up-to-date. In addition, seniors should discuss hearing screenings with their physicians so they can ensure they can always hear sirens and other motorists while on the road. Great strides have been made in regard to helping people with fading hearing hear better, and seniors would be wise to take advantage of such advancements, which include hearing aids that can be connected to smartphones. • Familiarize yourself with medication side
effects. Whether they do so temporarily or permanently, many seniors take medications, and every medication comes with side effects. When filling a new prescription, carefully read the dosage and description label to ensure that it’s safe to drive while taking the medicine. • Avoid driving in certain conditions. Driving in inclement weather, during rush hour and at night makes many drivers uncomfortable, regardless of their age. But such conditions can be especially dangerous for aging drivers whose vision and reaction times might be fading. Seniors who avoid driving in harsh conditions and heavy traffic may be more comfortable behind the wheel, thereby reducing their risk of accident or injury. Seniors need not give up their drivers’ licenses at the first signs of aging. But adjusting certain behaviors and exercising extra caution can help them stay safe behind the wheel.

Last week’s Fraser Valley Cross-Country Championships in Aldergrove included nearly 250 competitors in the junior divisions alone and it was a pair of South Delta Sun Devils leading the way in both races. Jonathan Hofer and Madelyn Bonikowsky capped an outstanding day for the Tsawwassen school by capturing their respective races. Hofer completed the four kilometre course in 13:01.7 — finishing 23 seconds ahead of his nearest rival in a race that featured 146 student athletes. SDSS teammate Jacob Bonikowsky nearly joined him on the podium, placing fourth in a time of 13:34.0. Alex Lamyin finished 33rd (14:56), helping the Sun Devils end up fifth in the junior boys team standings. Aiden Turner in 61st (16:23.8) and Oliver Buchanan in 124th (19:54) rounded out the SDSS entries. It was convincing victory for Bonikowsky in the junior girls race. She completed the four kilometre course in 14:56.3 to win by 16 seconds. Gemma Dumas also enjoyed a terrific showing, placing 16th out of 118 entries in a time of 16:51.8. Cianna Dawydiuk-Clozzza rounded out the top three SDSS finishers in 56th place (18:51.4) to earn her team fifth place. Leilana Jones (20:01) and Lauren Lamyin (21:20) were 73rd and 92nd respectively. Meanwhile, Southpointe Academy made plenty of noise in the Grade 8 girls race with two runners in the top 10. Anka Stefanovic finished fourth, covering the 2.8 km trek in 12:28.9. Alaina Zhang (14:44) was ninth, while Hannah Rashid (16:48.1) was 20th, leaving the Titans second in the team standings. In the Grade 8 boys race, Southpointe’s
South Delta’s Madelyn Bonikowsky and Jonathan Hofer beat out over 100 competitors in each of their junior races at the Fraser Valley Cross-Country Championships in Aldergrove. Trenton Lau finished seventh in a time of 11:40.7 over the same distance. Teammates
Charleston Cao and Ryder Tailor-Hunt were 38th and 49th respectively.

Sun Devils win Delta battle on late TD MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
For a team that routinely piles up the points and yardage, it was a much different script that produced its first rivalry game win in two seasons. The South Delta Sun Devils needed a late touchdown and a big-time defensive effort to pull out a 6-3 victory over the Seaquam Seahawks in the annual McDonalds Delta Cup clash on a glorious Saturday afternoon in Tsawwassen. The result snapped a three-game losing streak in rivalry games against the Seahawks and New West, dating back to the 2017 campaign, and leaves South Delta at 3-3 heading into its final weekend of the regular season. The Sun Devils entered the tilt as the province’s top ranked passing team and averaging 24 points per game. Yet they came ever-so-close to being shut out on their home field for the first time in recent memory. The winless Seahawks (0-5) kicked a 30-yard field

That’s when quarterback Ben McDonald found Ethan Troniak behind coverage for a 23-yard pass and run play for the major score. Although McDonald threw for 187-yards, the usual “big play” element was all but eliminated from the Devils’ arsenal thanks
to the Seaquam defence and too many penalties. Head coach Ray Moon says his team has to be better after piling up 34 points in a heartbreaking one-point loss to No. 1 ranked Vancouver College two weeks earlier. “I think they looked at their record and figured they could mail it in today,” said Moon. “Right now we are playing to the level of our competition. There we are fighting No. 1 College
for every square inch then have that kind of effort today. “I think it’s part of being a young team. They don’t have the idea of going out and playing their game and being dominant. It’s a learning curve and not one I am comfortable going through.” Still, it was a big effort by the South Delta defence that twice produced three and out Seahawk possessions in the late going.

Ice Hawks have work to do to retain Tunnel Cup MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The Delta Ice Hawks have some work to do if they want to retain the Tunnel Cup. The Richmond Sockeyes can clinch the four-game regular season series when the PJHL rivals meet again on Nov. 22 after a 6-2 victory on Tuesday night in Ladner. The visitors took control in the second period as Noah Kelly scored his second of the night just seconds into the frame to make it 3-1. Daniel Rubin pulled the Ice Hawks back within one but Richmond responded with goals by Hayden Hurst and Brady Sprague before the second
intermission. The Ice Hawks paid the price for too many defensive breakdowns and odd-man rushes as they tried to get back in the game. “Guys were pressing to make an impact and score goals but it can actually make it worse and it doesn’t seem to matter how much you tell them that,” said Hawks GM and head coach Steve Robinson. “In high emotion games it’s usually the team that makes the least mistakes that wins and they came in here and played well tonight.” Robinson was not pleased with the way his team responded to the adversity in the third period, resulting in a parade to the penalty box for
a number of his key veteran players. “I wanted to see a mature pushback rather than that unravelling. (Leading scorer Alex Suprynowicz) gets smoked on the wall on what I think was a good hit and Rubin reacts to it and gets a (10 minute misconduct). ‘Super’ then drops a chirp and gets a 10 too. At one point I had five different offensive guys in the box. “We are down 5-2 and 6-2 and we are chirping their bench. For me, that part is embarrassing. Sometimes you just have to eat it and say today just wasn’t our day. Tip your hat to them and say they were ready to play tonight and we made too many mistakes to win the game.”

South Delta Bantam A1 Storm won the Larry Orr Memorial Tournament in Sydney.
Bantam Storm edge Chilliwack to capture tourney in Sydney South Delta’s Bantam A1 team recently won the Larry Orr Memorial Tournament in Sydney, a tournament that included teams from both the mainland and island. The Storm finished first in round robin play and were able to capture the title with an exciting 3-2 victory over Chilliwack. “The kids had a great weekend, the team bonded well, they got to experience playing different teams they don’t often get to see, and of course winning the tournament is an added bonus,” said Storm head coach Brent Wheatley. The team consists of: Jacob Bailie,
Diarmuid Bostock, Arjun Chahal, Charlie Derrheim, Tye Hemenway, Maddex Hewitt, Max Kidds-Brodie, Logan Lechner, Grady Lenton, Jesse Mitran, Lane Sharpe, Kai Sloan, Jamison Sluys, Declan Speiran, Owen Turpie, Dylan Van Poelgeest, Owen Vernier, and Ben Wichers. The Storm are led by head coach Brent Wheatley, and assistants Chad Dey and Tony Marra. The team manager is Brent Derrheim. The Storm will be part of South Delta Minor Hockey’s annual Tim Jardine Bantam Midget Showcase slated for Nov. 9-12.

GIFFORD, Harvey Alan June 19, 1944 - October 22, 2018 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Harvey Gifford, a man loved and respected by many. He was a fisherman who lived his life in Ladner. Although he lived with COPD for many years he chose to have a positive outlook on life, he lived for Friday men’s night, Sunday night dinners with Doreen and time spent with friends and family.
On October 18, 2018 our beautiful, sweet, kind, loving and beautiful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Marilyn, passed on to be with her parents. Although we are devastated by our loss, we are so proud of the lives she touched. She was a woman who loved her family and friends passionately, but still had love to share with the world. Our father lovingly and meticulously cared for our mother through her long and brave battle. Our family is both grateful and in awe of their 61 years (65 together),. A true love! We know she is having pupus and a cocktail with her parents on a lanai watching her favorite hula dancers. We love you so very very much, Mom! Aloha nui loa, A hui hou kakou (Until we meet again)
He is survived by his sister Doreen Peltier, in-laws Ray and Agnes Manning, Roy and Josee Manning, Kathy Manning (Wayne), numerous nieces and nephews, plus 10 great nieces and nephews. Harvey was pre-deceased by his wife Mona, his mother Mim, his father Alan and brother-in-law Hank Peltier. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday November 10 at the Harris Barn, 4140 Arthur Drive, Delta, BC from 1pm - 5pm. Please note parking is limited. A special thank you to Dr. Hsia, his long-time family doctor, the staff at Delta Hospital and the amazing team at Delta Hospice. Those who desire may make a memorable donation in memory of Harvey to Delta Hospice (4631 Clarence Taylor Crescent, Delta, BC V4K 4L8) or the charity of your choice.
A celebration of life will take place at the Tsawwassen United Church on October 29, 2018 at 10:30 a.m.
(Shout out to Dr. Kevin Song for giving her those cherished extra years)

SAVAGE, John Lawrence February 23, 1936 - October 20, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Savage on October 20, 2018. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at home. John was proud to be part of a pioneer farming family in Ladner, BC. He spent all of his farming career working with his father and brothers on their family farm, HR Savage & Sons and Savage Farm Equipment located on Ladner Trunk Road. John believed strongly in giving back to his community, and as such was involved in many local and national agriculture associations over his lifetime. John was a past president of the Delta Chamber of Commerce and served on Delta Council. He was the MLA for Delta from 1986 - 1991 where he served as Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. Over the years, John enjoyed pitching in the Ladner Men’s Fastpitch League, bowling, golfing, hunting, fishing and travelling. John was predeceased by his parents Harold and Veronica, brother-in-law George and sister-in-law Susan. He is survived by his wife Margaret, his daughters Kim (Mark), Pam (Denis) and Lori (Steve), as well as grandchildren Chelsea (Brandon), Steven and Dustin. He will be greatly missed by siblings Sharon (Ken), Robert (Daphne), Diane and Ken (Anita), as well as many extended family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, please kindly donate to the Delta Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice in John’s memory. A private family service will be held at a later date.
Don Leo was predeceased by his parents Jonathan DeLaun and Leona, his brothers Sharon and Gene, and sister Tonya. Don Leo is survived by his wife Rosalie, daughter Rodonna (Darrell), sons Don Michael (Sonja) and Jeffery Leo (Jill), and 8 grandchildren. Don Leo was born on April 29, 1931 in Hurricane, Utah. After graduating from High School in Cedar City Utah, Don Leo joined the US Navy, playing football and undergoing basic training at Treasure Island in San Francisco. Don Leo went on to have a celebrated career as a professional wrestler, first as a tag team with his father, then solo, working under the name “Don Leo Jonathan”. Don Leo also worked extensively as a commercial deep sea diver, making some of the first deep gas dives on the west coast before diving the oil fields in the North Atlantic. Don Leo and Rose moved to Canada in the mid 1960’s, finally settling in Tsawwassen BC where they raised their family. Don Leo was an avid sportsman, spending his spare time hunting and fishing. Don Leo will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and fans. His gentle demeanor, clever wit, and ability to hold anyone’s attention with his stories of complex practical jokes was legendary. A private celebration of life will be held for friends and family. For those wishing to offer condolences, please go to www.myalternatives.ca. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Delta Kidsport at kidsport.ca/donleojonathan or the BC Cancer Foundation at http:/donate.bccancerfoundation. com/goto/donleoheaton.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
