Mayors set to talk bridge

Victoria won’t make move on crossing until discussions with regional politicians SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Will a bridge replace the George Massey Tunnel? Will another tunnel be built instead? Will nothing happen until further study and consultations are undertaken? Those are the big unknowns when it comes to a potential Fraser River crossing and it looks like it will be several more weeks before any light is shed on the issue. Asked by the Optimist when the independent technical review of the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project will be made public, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure issued the following statement: “We’ve heard the concerns around costs and impacts about building a 10-lane bridge to replace the Massey Tunnel, both from mayors and people in Metro Vancouver. That’s why government retained Stan Cowdell to lead an independent technical review of the options available for the corridor, to make sure that any future direction on the crossing works for people in the region. “The ministry is thoroughly reviewing Mr. Cowdell’s report and

The minister of transportation and infrastructure will be discussing its findings with Metro mayors in the coming weeks before making the independent review — and government’s next steps — public later this fall.” In September 2017, the government announced it was suspending the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project, an initiative of the previous Liberal government that would have seen a $3.5-billion, 10-lane bridge constructed by 2022. It then hired Cowdell to lead a review of the project and other options, a report the province received this summer but has yet to

make public. During question period in the legislature this week, Delta South Liberal MLA Ian Paton continued to press the need to replace the aging tunnel. “Delta mayor-elect George Harvie has a simple message for the transportation minister, and I quote: ‘We need a new bridge. That is the number one concern I heard. We need a new bridge.’” Paton also asked, “When will this minister build the bridge?” Premier John Horgan responded that the project was not part of the 10-year transportation plan devised by Metro mayors. Noting he met Delta Mayor Lois Jackson

and discussed the issue at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention, Horgan said he and Transportation Minister Claire Trevena understand the traffic congestion situation at the tunnel and will work as “diligently as we can” to make sure the region understands the need to relieve it. During the exchange Paton asked when the Cowdell report would be released, prompting the premier to respond the Mayors’ Council is in place “to make sure we make rational investments in the fastest growing part of British Columbia. Those rational investments have to be done with the view of meeting all the challenges

in the region… not just the challenges of those in Delta.” It likely isn’t good news if Metro Vancouver mayors have a say on whether the bridge becomes a reality. The majority had voiced opposition to the project, although many did not seek re-election or were defeated in last month’s civic election. Both Jackson and mayor-elect George Harvie, Delta’s former CAO, were critical of other mayors, saying it’s all politics. Jackson said others on the Metro board admitted to her they wanted the funding for their own projects. Harvie has pledged to continue the pressure to have a bridge built.

Rental scam foiled

A savvy would-be renter avoided being scammed out of $1,300 in a fraud that seems to have recently surfaced in Tsawwassen. According to Delta police, a Delta man responded to a Craigslist ad for an apartment in Tsawwassen, allegedly owned by a couple who were offering it for a very competitive rate. The man hadn’t seen the apartment yet, but was

in email communication with the apparent owners, who indicated that if he wanted to secure the apartment, he should put a deposit down through their account with Air BNB. The man was then sent an email purportedly from Air BNB. “Fortunately the man noticed that the email didn’t look quite right,” said Delta police public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf.

Toxicology test confirms dog ingested poison

THANK YOU

IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Delta police have finally confirmed that a Ladner dog that became sick and died in May from what was then an unknown substance was, in fact, poisoned. Kleo, a three-year-old Bernese mountain dog, began vomiting one afternoon and became progressively more ill. A vet noted Kleo displayed symptoms consistent with anti-freeze poisoning. On the next day, the owner made the difficult decision to euthanize the dog. The Delta Police Department arranged to have toxicology results done on the Kleo’s blood work. This involved reaching out to a toxicologist in Washington state that specializes in animal toxicology. “The results showed that ethylene glycol, the toxic ingredient in antifreeze, was most likely what made the dog sick. It seems a relatively large amount of it was ingested,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. “There is no evidence to suggest that the dog was

Kleo, a three-year-old Bernese mountain dog, died in May likely as a result of ingesting anti-freeze. intentionally poisoned.” Leykauf said police urge pet owners to be vigilant of items and plants in their yards that may be harmful or toxic to pets. There are plants that contain ethyl glycol to sustain them through the cold winter. Kleo’s owner June Mark first let the community know what happened to her beloved pet on the Ladner’s Landing Facebook Group. Her post sparked considerable outrage and other reports of pets ingesting foreign substances and getting sick.

Mark recently posted again letting the community know of the police investigation, which has now concluded. “She had an ethylene glycol level of 5.9 mmol after 48 hours of the event. The lab estimated that she ingested 1.5 cups of antifreeze to get levels like that,” she wrote. “I miss her every day, but at least now I know for sure why she died and that it was nothing that I had done or not done. It was just some sick SOB that took it out on my baby. RIP Baby Girl.”

Get ready for some delays as major infrastructure work is beginning on busy stretches of roadway in South Delta. Metro Vancouver water main work followed by city road and utility improvements are scheduled to take place on 53rd Street/ Arthur Drive and along 28th Avenue in the rural section between Ladner and Tsawwassen. The extensive projects are expected to take more than a year to complete. Metro Vancouver has already done water main replacement along 52nd Street, both south and north of Highway 17, so will now be turning its attention northward. Delta deputy engineering director Hugh Fraser said a building at the south end of 53rd Street was recently demolished and crews will start on the water main at 34B Avenue as well as tree removal in the area. A traffic light will eventually be installed at the intersection of 28th Avenue and 53rd Street. the closure of 34B Avenue for two weeks in early November, although traffic will be able to continue to use Arthur Drive. In terms of the overall schedule, it will depend on how quickly the Metro water main takes to construct, Fraser noted. It currently looks like the Metro work will not be completed until late summer 2019 and the Delta road works will commence after that. Some of that could be completed in the fall of 2019 but will likely stretch into early 2020. As far as the city project, it will include a new traffic signal at 53rd Street and 28th Avenue and roadway widening on the west side of 53rd Street to provide dedicated southbound

right and left turn lanes and a new dedicated westbound right turn lane on 28th Avenue. There will also be new separated cycle lanes, bus stop improvements and roadway rehabilitation. Meanwhile, Delta council recently approved awarding a contract for design and construction management for improvements on 56th Street between Highway 17 and 28th Avenue. The improvements include roadway widening to provide adequate pavement width for two travel lanes and two bike lanes, pavement rehabilitation, replacement of water mains and drainage improvements, including ditch relocation.

Lois Jackson served six terms as Delta’s mayor, but will be sworn in next week as a councillor after winning a seat in last month’s civic election. She served as a council member for a quarter of a century before winning the mayor’s chair in 1999.

Jackson set to play elder role After 19 years as mayor, veteran civic politician to lend her experience to new-look council SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

She’s still got plenty to give as the elder statesperson on Delta council. Lois Jackson’s 19-year run as the city’s mayor is coming to an end, having chaired her final meeting this week, but she’s not going anywhere. A political survivor, Jackson’s tenure on council has been remarkable considering her first term as an alderman came 45 years ago when she was the first woman elected to that position. Except for one term in which she didn’t run, she’s served continuously on council, part of various slates and alliances over the many years. When she was acclaimed in 2014 after no one stepped forward to run against her, Jackson indicated it would be her final term. It was thought she would be retiring from politics but that turned out not to be the case when the 80-year-old announced late this summer she would be joining her former city manager George Harvie on the Achieving For Delta ticket, this time seeking a seat again as councillor. The results on election night proved there’s still plenty of appetite for Jackson’s experience as she finished second in the polls among 20 council candidates.

“We don’t seem as a nation to be learning from the historic happenings of the past. As I said to many people, I ran because I’ve seen what happens when you don’t have the stability of at least being able to consider what the historic questions have been. “Like I said about the First Nations over and over again, they had it right. They still do. They revere their elders and when something important happens, they go and talk with their elders before they make decisions. Other nations do that with their elderly people,” she said. Jackson has always been willing to speak her mind without the usual political jargon, something that’s not about to change. “Major change doesn’t always equate to good change. I guess I feel my role is being somewhat of an elder to advise where those people who need advice on a topic, or maybe expand their understanding of why we are where we are today, have that rather than a knee-jerk, let’s change the world today immediately. Let us learn from our history and make sure change is solid and good for the community, and not one year down the road see us saying, ‘Oh my gosh, what have we done?’” Noting she likes the makeup of the new council with its varying ages, Jackson said it’s a given

she’ll be viewed by many as a voice for older adults. Jackson, who moved to North Delta in 1968, has been part of tremendous changes. When she arrived, the population was rapidly growing and 50 per cent of Deltans were under the age of 18. Also at the time, the city was being inundated with development proposals to meet demand for housing. It was a time when there were large tracts of undeveloped land in the city, unlike what people see today — a community almost fully built-out and constrained by the borders of the Agricultural Land Reserve. Today, the demographic is much older. Having adequate housing for that older segment, as well as

Asked for his take on Jackson’s continued role on council, Husband, who chuckles he has the same birthdate as Jackson, said people respect the fact she feels she still has much to contribute. “I don’t think most people would even know what Lois’s age is. She seems rather ageless and has lots of energy. You’ve got to give her full marks for that because a lot of people her age would be looking forward to a quiet life, and that’s not going to be the case for her,” he said. Longtime resident and former alderman Doug Massey, who served with Jackson back in the 1970s, said, “Her service to the people of Delta for the past 50 years is to be commended.”

young families, will be big challenges facing the new council and it was a major theme during this year’s election campaign. Jackson knows all too well the difficulty the city faces, noting the housing dilemma is one which has been dumped onto local governments due to the federal and provincial governments abdicating that responsibility. Looking ahead, another big challenge includes convincing the government to replace the George Massey Tunnel sooner rather than later. Jackson noted transportation concerns are not new either, pointing to former mayor Doug Husband’s council calling for a replacement for the tunnel decades earlier.

Former council member Scott Hamilton said Jackson has always had an uncanny ability to remain politically relevant. One example, he noted, was her talking about climate change and the need for the city to do its part in an inaugural address before it became the major topic of today. He added Jackson over the years never lost her humility, which resonates with residents. “Once you lose your humility, you may as well step away from the game because you’ve essentially forgotten what put you there. She never lost that,” Hamilton said. The inaugural council meeting, where Harvie will be sworn in as mayor, takes place Nov. 5.

John Savage, a prominent Ladner farmer and well-respected politician, has passed away. A proud member of a Ladner pioneer farming family, Savage died peacefully in his home on Oct. 20. He was 82. Savage spent his farming career working with his father and brothers on their family farm, HR Savage & Sons Farm Equipment, located on Ladner Trunk Road. He was involved with many local and agricultural associations over his lifetime, including serving as president of the Delta Farmers’ Institute. He was also a president of the Delta Chamber of Commerce. His political career started as a member of Delta council and from 1986 to 1991, he was an MLA in the Social Credit government where he served as the minister of agriculture. Former premier Bill Vander Zalm, also a Ladner resident, said Savage was great to work with and did a great job as MLA. “He was very respected and always worked hard.

I think he did a terrific job and I enjoyed working with him. Our condolences to his family,” he said. Mayor Lois Jackson, who had run with Savage for Delta council, said he was dedicated to improving his community. “He worked very, very hard and really contributed. When they wanted him to run for the province, I think he was somewhat torn but I said to him he has to go where his heart is and where he thought he could do the most good,” said Jackson. “Of course, he became the agricultural minister and he did a fine job. He was always a great community person who always had a chuckle and a smile. He was a hard worker who’ll really be missed.” Delta Farmers’ Institute president David Ryall said Savage’s passing is a real loss for the agricultural community that benefited from his tireless work, even during what should have been his retirement years. “He loved to work for the benefit of the agricultural community. The last really big item he did was making sure irrigation water was brought in when the South Fraser Perimeter

Road came in. He and Robert Butler, they worked tirelessly on the project that spent somewhere in the neighbourhood of $20 million towards improving the irrigation for the Delta farmers. They went to meetings a few times a month for something like three or four years, many hours. “For the last three or four summers it’s been drier than normal and what John helped bring in has been a godsend to some of the farmers,” said Ryall. In the legislature, Delta South MLA Ian Paton paid tribute to Savage, calling him a champion of agriculture who had an incredible and storied career. Over the years, Savage also enjoyed pitching in the Ladner fastpitch league, bowling, golfing, hunting, fishing and travelling. He is survived by his wife Margaret, three daughters, four siblings as well as several grandkids. His family is asking that in lieu of flowers, please donate to the Delta Hospital Foundation or the charity of your choice. A private family service will be held at a later date.

abinet ministers automatically get “honourable” attached to their name, a title that was particularly appropriate for John

Savage. Delta lost one of the real good ones late last month when the pillar of the local farming community and former provincial minister of agriculture passed away at 82. I have many fond memories of Savage, but what I’ll remember most about him is that he’s quite likely the most unassuming politician I’ve ever encountered. There was absolutely no pretence; what you saw, was what you got. I imagine that humble, straightforward approach was the result of years spent on the family farm where hard work and respect had been ingrained in him, traits that served him well in the often cutthroat world of politics. I can recall covering an event at the old Rusty Anchor Pub shortly after Savage had been elected to the legislature and writing a story about how the title had changed, but the man hadn’t. He looked almost embarrassed by all the fuss people were making over their new cabinet minister, politely accepting their congratulations but insisting he wasn’t any different than the guy they’d known all along. Five years later on the night his political career came to an end, I can remember the campaign office in a vacant store in the Tsawwassen Shopping Centre filled with glum faces as it became clear the NDP was in the process of wresting power away from the Socreds. Savage was on his way to losing his seat to Liberal challenger Fred Gingell, yet he was the one consoling volunteers, telling them that life would go on. And it certainly did. The John Savage people knew prior politics and the one they got to know while in office turned out to be the exact same guy in post-political life. He didn’t have the platform that minister of agriculture provided but that didn’t stop him from continuing to work on behalf of the community he loved. I would run into him every once in a while and every time it was the same old John, that familiar smile on his face. Later on as his health began to fail, he still fought to better this place, not to get credit but because it was the right thing to do. He was an honourable man and Delta is going to miss him.

Adopting PR could open the door to a nasty underbelly

T

he United States of America doesn’t seem to be too united these days. There are some big societal problems festering in America. There are issues on both sides of the political spectrum but the two most recent American tragedies illustrate all too clearly the nasty underbelly of a country founded on the concept of liberty. The anti-Semitic slaughter in Pittsburgh was committed by some tortured freak who, as it would seem, was inspired by the rhetoric that spews out of the president’s mouth. The synagogue in question has helped refugees from all over the world find security and freedom from persecution. The gunman was of the view that these refugees would pose a threat to America. No dark skinned people, please. They are rapists and murderers and they carry disease. Make America Great Again! Of course when the obvious gun question arose, President Donald Trump matter of factly suggested that if the synagogue had armed security personnel at the doors that none of this would have happened. It would seem that restaurants, concert halls, convenience stores, schools, churches and, indeed, all public spaces need armed personnel to protect the public from early death by bullet. Extremism is alive and well in America and I am sure grateful there is no proportional representation there at the state or federal level. It is clear that Neo Nazi and other extremist parties would thrive in the caustic environment that exists in the republic currently. Meanwhile, here in polite land, we seem to be thriving for the most part. Personally, I would like to keep it that way and that is why I will be voting to keep first past the post in the electoral reform referendum. I believe it would be difficult to govern with three, four or five parties in the back room bargaining for policy consensus. I want things to get done and first past the post has served us well. This past weekend, NDP MLA Melanie Mark was campaigning

in her Mount Pleasant riding for the pro PR side. She is the minister for advanced education and has huddled with her cabinet colleagues to develop the dubious PR options that are on the ballot. She also has a degree in political science but when asked by reporters to explain the PR options, she was unable to do so. That makes me nervous. When further asked to explain in the legislature this past Monday afternoon, she was again unable to answer. So began a debate in which Attorney General David Eby began fielding questions from MLA Shirley Bond and MLA Mary Polak on Mark’s behalf. Some simple questions as to what constitutes an urban, rural or semi-urban riding were unanswered in the legislature. We still don’t know how many MLAs will be elected under PR and the 50-plus-one threshold seems way too low. This will be the third crack at this since 2005 and we have already said no twice. At the end of this exchange on Monday, Premier John Horgan chimed in: “If any jurisdiction in Canada is well versed in first past the post versus other models, it would be this place right here.” (Hansard, Oct. 19) I agree. Been there done that. First past the post! Mike Schneider’s political observations and comments are solely his own.

MLA says he won’t shy away from expressing his opinion

Editor: Re: MLA shouldn’t tell constituents how to vote, letter to the editor, Oct. 25 I was surprised to see a letter from Nico Condonopoulos outlining his frustration that as an MLA, I would dare to share my opinion on the issue of proportional representation. My office in Ladner is run in a completely nonpartisan manner. I serve all of my constituents whether they agree or disagree with my views, and work to respond to any issues they bring forward in a timely and effective manner. Meanwhile when I’m at the legislature in Victoria, I participate in debates on a variety of issues and policy matters. I have a responsibility to gather and analyze

information and share it with my constituents. This may include expressing my personal views on how constituents may be affected by government decisions. The fact is, MLAs are free to express their opinions on a variety of local and provincial matters. When it comes to proportional representation (PR), I have presented my view that this electoral system contains a number of flaws and outcomes that I am deeply concerned with. A number of my fellow MLAs on all sides of the house — including the premier — have publicly shared their thoughts on PR as well, including which system they support. If the letter writer is really concerned with actions

that are “anti-democratic,” then he should examine the referendum process and the way it has been unfairly skewed in ways that benefit the NDP and Green Party, to achieve the outcome they are looking for — namely, a change to a PR system. They have lowered the threshold for voter approval to the lowest level possible (50 per cent); removed a regional threshold that takes into account B.C.’s unique geography, a move which will diminish rural voices; and failed to provide adequate information, including riding maps, to voters. I will not shy away from stating my opinion that British Columbians deserve better than that. Ian Paton Delta South MLA

PR would end string of dictatorships

Editor: It’s not really surprising that many of our politicians tell us proportional representation (PR) is bad and our current system of first past the post (FPTP) is good. Until the last provincial election, we had essentially a string of dictatorships, one party in power with no real opposition to anything it proposed. To understand PR I would suggest you check a YouTube video made by John Cleese in 1987. It’s both informative and simple to understand. Essentially, PR counts up the votes cast for every party and allocates seats in the provincial legislature based on those votes. In the last election with FPTP, the Liberals won 43 seats (out of 87) with

40.37 per cent of the popular vote. Under PR, they would have won approximately 36 seats. The NDP won 41 seats with 40.26 per cent of the popular vote, however under PR they would also have had approximately 36 seats. The Greens won three seats with 16.84 per cent of the popular vote while under PR they would have been awarded approximately 15 seats. Small parties are only awarded seats when they get a minimum number of votes cast for them. When you get away from dictatorships, you also get away from swings in political leadership from one extreme to another and that in turn encourages more debate and the compromise required to hold it all together, something our

Common theme

Editor: I’m somewhat amused by those that support proportional representation gnashing their teeth and hollering about the far right governments in Italy, Austria and Poland and how the far right is on the upswing in Germany and now Sweden, given the fact that every one of these countries has one thing in common — a PR system of electing governments. Curtis R. MacDonald current politicians are not used to and certainly fear. Being a dictator is easy. Democracy is hard, but that’s why we pay them the big bucks. Gavin Wishart

Defibrillator used on hockey player in Tsawwassen

Editor: On Oct. 22 at the Monday drop-in hockey at the South Delta Recreation Centre a player suddenly collapsed on the ice surface. Quickly one of the players notified the staff and took the defibrillator from the wall. In minutes the player

went into cardiac arrest. The defibrillator was then employed and this saved his life. Soon the paramedics arrived to take over with their expertise. The staff should be commended for their quick and calm response. We can all appreciate their first aid training and their

ability to implement this training in a real life situation. They should be commended for their action. To the staff of South Delta Recreation Centre, a job well done. Yes, the player is doing well and is recovering at home. Dennis Kamiya

Kind strangers come to rescue after bike accident

Editor: Goodness is alive and well in the people of Tsawwassen. Thank you to those that came to help my dear husband when he had a

terrible fall while riding his bike on Oct. 17 through Imperial Village. While waiting a long time for an ambulance, you took the time to secure his bike and drive

him to the hospital so he could be treated sooner. Despite scrapes, a fat lip, broken front teeth and some deep bruising in his chest, he’s going to be fine. J. Goss

Roadblocks nab drug & alcohol impairments

Delta police checked 900 vehicles during a recent two-night Counterattack blitz, catching drivers impaired by both drugs and alcohol. Officers with specialized training were on hand both nights as roadblocks were set up Oct. 19 and 20 in Ladner and North Delta. “Nearly half of our frontline officers are now trained in standardized field sobriety testing,” said Sgt. Sukh Sidhu, head of the department’s traffic unit. During the blitz officers suspected three drivers of potentially being impaired by drugs. After testing, police handed out a pair of 24-hour suspensions and impoundments, and conducted one criminal impaired by drug investigation, where cannabis was believed to be causing the impairment. Police also gave out a pair of three-day driving suspensions for persons who blew in the warn range for alcohol and one 90-day driving suspension.

Pearl is a female, 10lb, 8 year old Chihuahua Mix. She came up to us from Eastwood Ranch Foundation when nobody locally was interested in her. This little lady is the epitome of why older dogs ROCK. She loves everyone and anything; people, old and young, big and small dogs and cats! We had her at an adoption event recently and she loved saying hello to anyone that came within the vicinity of her. Pearl would enjoy a good walk each day, and then snuggles on the couch afterwards. Being a seasoned lady, she is crate trained, house broken and good on leash. No separation anxiety, although she LOVES being with people as often as possible. She has a heart murmur, for which she is on an inexpensive medication and will be for the rest of her life. It doesn’t seem to bother her at all, and the vet said as long as she maintains her weight and walks. As with all our dogs, she is spayed and up to date on all shots and vaccines and microchipped. SACRED HEART PARISH

Ladner dentist willing to pay cash for children’s Halloween candy

Christmas MARKET NOV.3

9:00am - 2:00pm

Please join us with your friends and family for our annual Christmas Market. We are serving a delightful high tea, selling homemade baking and crafts. We also have a special Kid’s Corner and lots more. We look forward to seeing you there!

Ladner dentist Dr. Raj Dhiman is once again giving kids an opportunity to trade their Halloween candy for cash. In an effort to promote a healthier Halloween, the Cash for Candy program will pay $2 for every pound of Halloween candy a child exchanges at Riverside Dental from Nov. 1 to 7. A matching donation will then be made to Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. The program has raised over $8,500 for the hospital over the years. As a father, Dhiman said he knows how fun and festive Halloween can be for children and parents. He said parents like the Cash for Candy program as it’s a healthier alternative without taking away the fun and excitement of trick-

or-treating, while the kids feel like they’re making a difference in their community, with the bonus of exchanging money for their Halloween candy. Halloween candy can be exchanged during the following office hours: Nov. 1 and 5 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Nov. 6 and 7 from noon to 6:30 p.m. Children can weigh their candy on a large scale, donated by Ladner Safeway, to see exactly how much they are contributing to Delta Hospital. Collected candy will then be donated to a drug rehabilitation centre. Riverside Dental is located at 130-4977 Trenant St. (across from the Ladner Bottle Depot). For more information, call 604-946-9588 or e-mail smile@ladnerdentist.com.

HAVE YOUR SAY!

Vote in the 2018 Referendum on Electoral Reform October 22 to November 30, 2018 B.C. is having a referendum on what voting system to use for provincial elections. This is a big decision so make sure to vote.

What are we voting on? You are being asked:

should we keep the current First Past the Post voting system or move to a system of proportional representation?

if proportional representation is adopted, which proportional system do you prefer? - Dual Member Proportional (DMP) - Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) - Rural-Urban Proportional (RUP)

You can answer both questions or just one and your ballot will still count. Find out more about all four voting systems by calling us or visiting our website. Refer to information from all sides in the debate, make an informed choice, and remember to vote by November 30, 2018.

Ladner Fishermen’s Hall has deep roots in Delta. Before it became the “hall,” it was a railway station on the wharf at Port Guichon.

Ladner Fishermen’s Hall is celebrating 75 years Social and dance scheduled to mark occasion

Saturday, Nov. 24 is the date to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Ladner Fishermen’s Hall. The social committee for Ladner Fishermen’s Hall is finalizing plans to ensure the building’s 75th celebration will be a memorable occasion. Festivities will commence as an afternoon social from 1 to 4 p.m. with a mix of artists performing live music and reflections of the hall’s 75 years in the community. There will be time for families and friends to connect; listen to speeches, view historic photo displays, and enjoy

food and beverages. Evening festivities include a dance with live music featuring The Karmichaels. Bruce Stevens, president of Ladner Fishermen’s Cooperative Association, will serve as master of ceremonies and welcome families, friends and guests. He will also give a speech and invite guest speakers to say a few words and share highlights of life and times at Ladner Fishermen’s Hall since it was established in 1943. Updates will be posted on the association’s website at www.LFCA.ca/

Connect Hearing, with hearing researcher Professor Kathy Pichora-Fuller at the University of Toronto, seeks participants who are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids for a hearing study investigating factors that can influence better hearing. All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge and if appropriate, the clinician may discuss hearing rehabilitation options including hearing aids. Qualifying participants may also receive a demo of the latest hearing technology. The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve life-changing hearing healthcare across Canada. Why participate in the hearing study? Hearing problems typically result from damage to the ear and researchers have spent decades trying to understand the biology behind hearing loss. More importantly, researchers now realize the need to better understand how hearing

loss affects your everyday life*. In this new hearing study, Professor Pichora-Fuller and her team are trying to find out how people learn to live with hearing loss and how new solutions could help these people take action sooner and live life more fully. It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss1, but most do not seek treatment right away. In fact, the average person with hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help2. This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people often find they can “get by” without help, however as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. For some people this loss of clarity is only a problem at noisy restaurants or in the car, but for others it makes listening a struggle throughout the entire day. By studying people who have difficulty hearing in noise or with television, we hope to identify key factors impacting these difficulties and further understand their influence on the treatment process.

If you are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids, you can register to be a part of this new hearing study† by calling: 1.888.242.4892 or visiting connecthearing.ca/hearing-study. It was an advertising slogan, first used in 1929, for one of the major soft drinks: “The pause that refreshes.” We can also apply it to spirituality. The pause that refreshes us is, in one form or another, prayer. Prayer exists in many ways, in many cultures and religious traditions. The Most Magnificent news Ashley Spires’ children’s book has been turned into an animated short film

Years in the making, a dream has finally been realized for South Delta author Ashley Spires. The Most Magnificent Thing, Spires’ bestselling picture book, has been turned into an animated short film, featuring the narration of Hollywood icon Whoopi Goldberg and screen and stage star Alison Pill. Nelvana, Canada’s premier animation company owned by Corus Entertainment, is in charge of the project, which is currently wrapping production. The film is set to debut at various festivals in early 2019 and then will be rolled out on Corus’ children’s net-

works. The Most Magnificent Thing animates Spires’ tale about an unnamed girl, her furry best friend and their quest to make the most magnificent thing. The girl knows just how it will look and just how it will work — all she has to do is make it. After several trials and errors, the girl realizes that making the most magnificent thing might not be as easy as she thought, but with the help of her furry best friend, and a whole lot of dedication and imagination, she manages to get it just right. “As a young child I wanted to be an animator and was involved in art my whole life,” said Spires. “It got to the point, however, that animation might be beyond me and I ended up

going in a different direction, which I don’t regret. Writing and illustrating children’s books is the best job ever and so it was still always a dream because my publisher is owned by Chorus — so I thought maybe this could happen.” She said when her publisher called and told her that her book would be turned into a film it was certainly a “pinch me moment.” “I think I might have cried a little,” she recalled with a laugh. “It’s just so incredible to see your work translated into the motion form. As the creator I have seen these characters run through my head for years, so to see everyone else see them running around and playing as I have for so many years is really

incredible.” Spires said the book has been warmly received by educators and the public, and is hoping to receive the same reception when audiences see the film. “This is a very personal book. It’s about making mistakes and pushing through your own failures and maybe finding that whatever you create in the end is not as amazing as you imagined, but it’s still amazing because you created it,” she said. The book has gone on to sell close to a half million copies, which Spires said for a Canadian picture book is a “pretty big deal.” “It’s in about 12 different languages around the world. It has been the highlight of my career so far,” she said.

Spires has an executive producer credit on the film and worked closely with the writer and director throughout the process. “Taking something that takes you five minutes to read and translating it into a 22-minute short — obviously some things needed to change and they needed to expand it — so it was great and I was honoured to work with everyone,” she said. “It helped make sure that the characters stayed true to the book.” She admits she was a bit awestruck when she found out Goldberg would be a part of the project. “I haven’t met her, but I have my fingers crossed that I’ll get to meet her even for just two seconds on the festival circuit when the film is released.”

Creative types come together For the Love of Art IAN JACQUES

For the Love of Art will be celebrating the abundance of creativity that can be found in South Delta. The brainchild of local artist Jan Rankin, the inaugural event will be held this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Harris Barn (4140 Arthur Dr.) in Ladner. Featuring 26 artists, including sculptors, potters, painters and photographers, it’s a chance to showcase and sell their work to the public in a beautiful, historic venue. “My desire is to bring together, in one place, the diverse talent and creativity of art and artists in

South Delta,” said Rankin. “This is a celebration of the creativity of South Delta, to create an opportunity to show and sell our work to the public and, of course, to have some fun.” Music will be performed throughout the day by Daniel Degoutiere and Dan Lonsdale. The White Spot food truck will be on site and raffle tickets for some great bags of goodies will be sold with all proceeds going to support the Little House Society. Rankin said it was important to her to include a fundraising component to the event. “Last year I organized an event to support the

displaced animals from the Interior wildfires,” she explained. “When I started getting feedback on who we could support, a few of the artists suggested Little House. I hadn’t heard about Little House, so I thought it’s probably an organization worthy of

some public attention.” Little House has been serving the Delta community for more than 30 years, providing support and hope for those touched by substance abuse. “We are so honoured to be selected as the event beneficiary,” said Little House executive director Joni Wright. “Raising awareness for the programs and services offered at Little House Society helps all residents of Delta, and talking about sub-

stance use disorder and mental health issues hopefully encourages a larger conversation.” For more information on the event, see: https:// fortheloveofartinsouthdelta.ca/. *** For the Love of Art is one of several art events in South Delta this Saturday. The Delta Potters Christmas Sale and the Delta Rockhounds’ 50th Anniversary Show and Sale are both at the South Delta Recreation Centre, The South Delta Artists Guild’s Presents of Mind art exhibition is at Gallery 1710 and Sacred Heart hosts its Christmas craft fair.

Turn home bar into neighbourhood hangout

Many people enjoy opening their homes to friends or family. Knowing how to cook, set the mood and entertain is increasingly important for many homeowners. Installing and outfitting a home bar can provide guests with the features of a night out, only without the crowds or bar tabs that come at the end of the night. A home bar is a place where hosts and their guests can gather and enjoy great conversation. Such a spot also can serve as a neighbourhood hangout — a smart choice for those who want to indulge safely and not have to drive home afterward. Creating a home bar need not be a difficult project. By investing in basic equipment, stocking up on preferred liquors and gaining some mixology expertise, hosts can impress and entertain their guests. Establish a bar setup Home bars can range from rolling carts to builtin wet bars to a single tray of items. Space in a home will dictate the kind of bar

Creating a home bar can make it easier to entertain family and friends. homeowners can have. Rolling bar carts are popular and versatile, and they can be kept stationary or rolled in and out of a room as needed. If a bar cart is open, organization is key,

as you don’t want it to look unkempt. A full-blown wet bar will require more construction, including plumbing and electricity if you need outlets for plugging in appli-

ances. Wet bars are ideal in dens, renovated garages and finished basements. Stock up on equipment A new home bar requires barware and glassware. Various drinks

are best served in requisite glassware and prepared with the right equipment. A home bar will benefit from a muddler, jigger, cocktail shaker, strainer, ice cube trays and bar

spoon. Glassware can include short glasses, tall glasses and wine glasses with stems. Martini glasses provide a chic look and are practical for those who prefer cosmopolitans and martinis. Fill it with spirits No bar is complete without alcohol and mixers. Homeowners can buy the types of spirits they love and complete their bars with the basics for mixing. When stocking a bar, keep in mind that everything does not have to be top-shelf. Vodka, gin, tequila, rum and whiskey are some of the more popular spirits. Simple syrup, fresh fruit, club soda, cola and bitters are examples of versatile mixers. Entertaining guru Martha Stewart says to have enough supplies on hand for guests. Expect each person to have three drinks (requiring three glasses), use a pound of ice, and three cocktail napkins per two-hour party. Don’t forget to also have non-alcoholic items on hand for those who don’t imbibe.

Parties are highly anticipated events come the holiday season. Office parties, gatherings with friends and family celebrations are just some of the many soirees that dot social schedules at this time of year. Office parties might be governed by certain organizational protocols, but parties with friends and families come with no such rules. That said, holiday hosts might want to keep their guests’ expectations in mind when planning their get-togethers. While there’s always room to try something new, the following are some musthave items when hosting holiday parties. 1. Holiday foods and beverages It goes without saying that holiday hosts will be expected to provide food for their guests. But certain foods, such as gingerbread cookies, can put everyone in the holiday spirit. And don’t forget that staple of the holiday beverage menu: eggnog. Eggnog can be made with or without

alcohol so everyone can enjoy this beloved holiday beverage. 2. Decorations Decking the halls is a holiday tradition, and hosts should make an effort to string some holiday decorations before welcoming guests into their homes. A Christmas tree might be the most ubiquitous decorative item come the holidays, so hosts can make their tree

the centerpiece of their decor. Hang some mistletoe around the house, which also can be adorned with seasonspecific plants like holly and poinsettias. If kids are attending the party, a kid-friendly decoration station can even be set up to ensure the youngsters have fun and stay busy during the festivities. 3. Games Games can be a great way to keep guests occupied during the party. From a safety perspective, games that engage guests might prevent them from overindulging in alcohol. Games in which participants can win holidaythemed prizes might be especially enjoyable for players.

Simplify things when cooking for a crowd over the holiday season

Families big and small typically celebrate the holiday season together. For some, celebrating the holidays with family requires traveling, while others stay put and welcome family and friends into their homes. At some point during the holiday season, celebrants who host family and friends will no doubt prepare a home-cooked meal for their loved ones. Cooking for a crowd can seem like a daunting task, especially for first-time hosts. However, there are various ways for hosts to simplify cooking for a crowd this holiday season. 1. Prepare a familiar dish Hosts may agonize over their holiday menus, and some may feel compelled to prepare a family specialty or the same dishes their parents or

Don’t let that beautiful display end up being a safety hazard

Lighting displays are one of the many things that help make the holiday season a special time of year. Often awe-inspiring, holiday lighting displays present a perfect opportunity for communities and individuals to showcase their festive sides. Lighting displays strung on home exteriors can pose safety risks if homeowners do not exercise caution. Fortunately, various strategies can help homeowners safely decorate their homes’ interiors and exteriors this holiday season. • Choose a fresh tree. Adding water to the tree stand each day will keep trees fresher longer. Avoid placing the tree too close

to heat sources, making sure it is at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. • Check all lights before stringing them. All lights, including those going on trees inside a home and those being strung outside, should be inspected prior to being strung. Look for any worn or broken cords and replace any defected lights. • Employ the buddy system. When stringing lights, always work with at least one other person. This makes it safe for homeowners who must climb ladders to string lights on especially tall trees and/or on their home exteriors. • Avoid working in

inclement weather. The weather during the holiday season can sometimes be unpleasant or unpredictable. Check the forecast before stringing exterior lights to ensure Mother Nature won’t pose a threat. Avoid hanging lights if the forecast predicts wet, icy or windy conditions that can make ladders unstable. • Turn lights off when going to bed and/or leaving the house. Interior and exterior holiday lights should not be left on when no one is home or everyone inside is sleeping. If left on overnight or when no one is home, lights may contribute to fires that damage homes and may even prove fatal.

It’s one room in house that all guests will visit

Bathrooms can easily be overlooked when party planning, even though they’re a part of the home that just about everyone on the guest list will have to use at some point during the festivities. As is often the case when hosting or attending a party, there are certain unwritten rules that apply to the restroom. Prevent discomfort for all by avoiding these faux poos, rather, faux pas. Keep it well stocked Running out of toilet paper can lead to embarrassing situations. Save guests the trouble of asking if someone can “spare a square” or putting out a distress call by ensuring there is plenty of toilet paper available in the bathroom. During the party, hosts can periodically check to see if the stock needs to be replenished. While you’re at it, make sure there are fresh, dry towels for hand-washing and plenty of soap on hand as well.

Clean up After using the bathroom, wipe up any excess water from counters and give a passing glance to the toilet seat before leaving the room to ensure everything is tidy. Close the seat and lid as well. Create a welcoming environment Hosts can ensure a pleasant restroom experience by utilizing an air freshener or a scented candle to create a welcoming aroma. In addition, make sure to have a readily accessible plunger near the toilet for emergency situations. Knock before entering It’s always wise to knock before opening the door to the bathroom. Check first before pushing open stall doors as well. Locks and latches break, and a simple knock spares any embarrassment. Keep it brief Linger only as long as necessary to do your business, as other people may be waiting their turns.

Storybook Setting Like a more imaginative approach to your child’s room? This is where the magic happens. Call us. We’ll come to your home, measure your space and present you with a 3D custom storage solution. Then we’ll custom manufacture absolutely everything you need and install it for you. We can do it for any room in your home, too. Talk about a happy ending. AS SEEN ON

Community ElderCollege delves into mystery

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Ladner Rotarians, some indicating with their fingers that we are “this close” to ridding the world of polio, sold 100 pumpkins at the Ladner Leisure Centre this week to raise funds for End Polio Now. Rotarians taking part included (from left) Chris Offer, Richard Shantz, Geoff Willers, Peter Roaf, president Kerry-Lynne Findlay, Angelina Ireland and Walt Hayward.

Dr. Simon Devereaux will separate fact from fiction when he presents Jack the Ripper and the Royal Family: Murder and Myth. The ElderCollege Delta presentation will take place on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon at Cedar Park Church in Ladner. Jack the Ripper is the most infamous murderer in modern history. Never captured, his identity is one of England’s best known mysteries. There are theories linking his crimes to the highest level of govern-

ment and even the British Royal Family. Devereaux, an associate professor of history at the University of Victoria, will explain the development of this theory and its even stranger versions. The presentation is complimentary to ElderCollege Delta members who can register online. Non-members can attend by taking out a $10 membership online or at the venue. All those interested must pre-register either by phone at 604-943-0262 or by email at eldercollegedelta@kinvillage.org.

Christmas Market at Sacred Heart

Ladner Rotarians sell out in four hours in pumpkin fundraiser for World Polio Day

The Rotary Club of Ladner’s Pumpkins for Polio at the Ladner Leisure Centre last week marked World Polio Day and raised money to fight the crippling disease. Last Tuesday Rotarians sold out of the 100 pumpkins donated by the

Guichon family at Felix Farms after four hours, in half the time expected, to generate $654. A club auction a week prior also generated $1,933. The two amounts matched on a two-toone basis by the Bill and

Melinda Gates Foundation will result in the $7,761 ($5,928 US) going to Rotary Foundation Polio Program. That money will help spare 9,800 children halfway around the world from the disease. With this week’s contri-

bution, in the past three years the Rotary clubs of Ladner and Tsawwassen have raised $72,276, matched by the Gates foundation, for a total of almost $216,828 ($166,710 US), enabling the polio vaccination of almost 278,000 children.

Rejuvenating Your Skin

When: Nov. 8, 2018 Time: 5 to 8 PM Where: 226 -1077 56th St. SALE • APPlES • GOODIE BAGS LOTS OF FUN RSVP: 604-943-9339 info@beachgrovelaser.com

A new method for rejuvenating the skin, which has found worldwide popularity thanks to its results, is now available at Beach Grove Laser Skin Clinic. This treatment is known as Microneedling, and has been used by celebrities such as Angelina Jolie. At the Cannes Film Festival, the actress caused such a stir with her youthful appearance that her reference to Microneedling was covered by Los Angeles Times. Microneedling is a minimally invasive nonsurgical procedure for facial rejuvenation that involves the use of micro needles to create controlled skin injury. Theoretically, any injury to the skin should instigate a process of wound healing by stimulating the production of fibroblasts and collagen. More collagen means smoother skin, as collagen is responsible for skin elasticity; any breakdown will lead to wrinkles and scarring. Collagen is arguably the most vital way to improve the look of the skin, and this goes far beyond reducing wrinkles. By stimulating collagen growth with Microneedling, you can also reverse sun damage and has an

added bonus of tightening loose skin, which makes it great for older men and women. Microneedling can address face wrinkles, acne scars, surgical scars, facial lines, stretch marks, pore size reduction and skin tightening. This procedure is well tolerated and it isn’t exclusive to the face area. The treatment can be done anywhere in the body. Microneedling may sound intimidating because of the word “needle”, but the treatment is considered one of the safest skin treatments available. Unlike deep chemical peels, dermabrasion, laser treatments, Microneedling has very little to no downtime. Mary Seitz, Beach Grove Laser’s Clinical Application Director, trained in Beverly Hills for this special procedure. Please call 604-943-9339 for your FREE consult and see if Dermapen is for you. Beach Grove Laser Clinic is having their annual OPEN HOUSE on the 8th of November at 5-8 pm. RSVP now to receive a FREE goodie bag and know more about Microneedling.

The new head coach of the Delta Pacers senior boys volleyball team has been bleeding green for much of his life. Andrew Robson is now in his second year as a full-time teacher at the Ladner high school and guiding a team he once starred for. The transition to the senior level comes after Robson coached the junior boys team last year. He also helped out the program while he was attending Douglas College and Simon Fraser University and earning his teaching degree. “I love it. I could’t be happier to be back. Obviously, I gained a lot of what I know as a player being part of this program,” said Robson who was coached by Delta Sports Hall of Fame inductee Barb Salt during his high school career. “Now it’s my opportunity to give back and put my own kind of touch on things. So far I have real-

ly enjoyed working with the kids. It’s a good group and it’s a matter of getting better every single day.” The Pacers have been a fixture in the provincial “AAA” rankings for a number of years and this season is no different sitting 12th in the latest poll. Their roster features a pair of standout Grade 12s — Jagger Schurman and Gavin Payne — who helped the team capture its first Fraser Valley Championship in 17 years last season. Last week in South Surrey, they got their first taste of the top ranked Earl Marriott Mariners in a battle of unbeaten teams in the Fraser Valley “AAA” South League. The Mariners locked down first place with a 3-0 win. That sent the Pacers to Monday’s semi-final match-up with third place finisher Elgin Park. The Orcas avenged an earlier regular season loss with a five-set victory to advance to next week’s final against Marriott while Delta will now look to secure the third

seed. The Mariners and Pacers will also co-host the Fraser Valley Championships from Nov. 13-16. Robson needs no introduction to the Mariners’ roster. He has worked with many of their players as an assistant coach in Volleyball B.C.’s provincial team program. “Obviously, they have a number of very talented players. They are an awesome group but at the same time I fully believe in our group and I have told them that since day one. We knew we had a tough one tonight but we have the luxury of probably seeing this team (again in the playoffs).” Robson watched his team enjoy a 17-15 lead during the second set before the Mariners erupted to score 10 of the next 14 points. Delta also enjoyed an early lead in set three when Marriott went on another big run and cruised to victory. “We showed we could hang with them. Jagger made the comment of just believing in ourselves

a bit more and I think that’s where we are at right now. Just getting to that point where we believe we can beat that team. It’s a matter of wrapping our heads around it.” Salt built the Pacers into a perennial provincial tournament team back in the mid-1990s. However, the school has never won the B.C. championship over the 25-year span. That’s something Robson hopes to change. “Developing a culture of wanting to get better every single day. That’s what it comes down to and not being afraid to make mistakes. It’s tough playing against teams like this but you got to show up and go for it,” said Robson who also serves as an assistant coach at Douglas College. “You are pushing that culture and those characteristics but at the same time I think about (winning a provincial banner) all the time. I didn’t get the chance to win one as a player here.” Now he’s in a position to do something about it again.

Sun Devils rally to capture FraserValleyChampionship MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

South Delta Sun Devils junior girls field hockey team has concluded its season in style by capturing the Fraser Valley Championship. The Sun Devils rallied from a two-goal deficit in the second half for a dramatic 3-2 victory over Maple Ridge in a shootout. A goal from Alexis Kamiya launched the comeback and switched the whole momentum of the game. That set the stage for Teila Noble to score the tying goal. The teams then went to a shootout where South Delta goalkeeper Sydney Rosler was superb in the 1v1 format — stopping four of five attempts. Meanwhile teammates Taylor Katsube, Isabelle Oystryk and Keira McCoy converted on their shots to secure the championship. Coached by SDSS alumni Jill Calvert,

the Sun Devils were second at the Valleys a year ago with a roster that featured eight players in Grade 8 and just one in Grade 9. Despite playing shorthanded the entire season, they nearly produced the banner, setting the stage for the 2018 campaign. “It was inspiring to see the girls encouraging each other to try their best and to not give up,” said Calvert of the second half comeback. “Our mission this season was to win the Fraser Valleys. I’m so proud of all the girls for working so hard to achieve our goal. Without each and every one of them, we wouldn’t have been able to do it. They were such a pleasure to coach and I loved seeing how they put all of their strengths together to dominate on the field.” The roster also featured: Raeya Dosanjh, Patricia Safar, Ally Nelson, Emily Barnard, Georgia Daoust, Tia Jacobs, Charlotte Schuler, Sofia Lehtoranta, Maleen Dueser and Haylee Holmes.

Ladner runner crowned BCcross-countrychamp MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist

Youth Men’s race winner Josh Woolgar of Ladner (centre) is joined on the podium by SDSS student and third place finisher Jonathan Hofer (left) at last Saturday’s BC Athletics provincial cross-country championships in Abbotsford. Woolgar ran the km course in 14:26.

Even without a running club or a properly surfaced 400-metre track for now, South Delta has developed into a hotbed for up-and-coming distance runners. That was evident at Saturday’s B.C. Athletics’ Provincial Cross-Country Championships in Abbotsford where several local athletes enjoyed podium finishes. Leading the contingent was Ladner’s Josh Woolgar who captured the 5 km youth men’s race. The Grade 12 Richmond Christian student was five seconds better than Vancouver’s Alex Farlinger in a winning time of 14:26. Woolgar, who trains with the South Surrey-based Coastal Track Club, will be looking for more success as one of the favourites at next weekend’s B.C. Secondary Schools Cross-Country Championships in Nanaimo. Joining Woolgar on the podium was South Delta Secondary’s Jonathan Hofer in third place with a clocking of 14:32. The international student from Switzerland was fresh off winning the Fraser Valley junior mens race for his school a week earlier. Meanwhile, SDSS Grade 10 twins Madelyn and Jacob Bonikowsky continue to show their promise with silver medal

Josh Woolgar finishes in their respective 3 km Midget Division races. Madelyn was just one second back of Royal City Track Club’s Katelyn StewartBennett, finishing her race in 10:31. Jacob recorded a time of 9:28. The Bonikowskys, along with Hofer, train with another South Surrey-based track club — Ocean Athletics. Rounding out the local results in Abbotsford were Southpointe Academy students Anka and Mina Stefanovic earning bronze in their respective 12-year-old and nine-year age groups covering 3 km (11:58) and 1.5 km (6:31) in distance.

NEWITT, Donna Katherine (Freeth) May 13, 1951 - October 26, 2018 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Nana, sister and friend on October 26th, 2018 at Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner, BC. Donna was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 13, 1951 to Len and Ellen Freeth. She grew up and lived her early years in Winnipeg and left for British Columbia as a young woman. Donna married and had 2 sons. She became a loving Nana to Ava, Brooklyn, Peyton and Colton. They were the center of her world. Donna worked for many years as an educational assistant within the Delta School System. Donna was passionate about her work and was valued and respected by the children, families and her coworkers. Donna enjoyed reading, crosswords, travel, theatre and was an avid supporter of her sons’ sports. Above all else, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was famous for her butter tarts and peach preserves. Donna will be missed but never forgotten by sons and daughters-in-law Scott and Kelly (Ava and Brooklyn), Brad and Naomi (Peyton & Colton), brothers Len and Doug Freeth and sister Peggy and their families. Donna had many dear friends who meant so much to her. We want to thank everyone who helped Donna on her cancer journey. ROBERTSON, Anna Anna “Anne” Robertson of 4510-10 Avenue. Tsawwassen and formerly of Chilliwack, BC and Lethbridge, Alberta passed away surrounded by family on October 25, 2018 at KinVillage Seniors Home, she was age 89. Anne was the ultimate homemaker, cook and gardener; she made wonderful bread and cinnamon buns. Nothing in the garden would go to waste. Summers were spent canning, pickling and preserving in preparation for the winter months. How lucky were we. Anne was involved with The Elks order of Royal Purple of Canada (Lodge No 110) for many years. She enjoyed the drill team and the many fundraisers the ladies were involved in. Mom enjoyed camping and golfing and she and our Dad went on many camping trips over the years. She will be sadly missed by her one daughter Linda Robertson (Jim Harrison) of Ladner, BC, two sons, Bill Robertson (Donna Robertson) of Campbell River and Tim Robertson (Rhonda Richardson) of Beaver Lodge, Alberta, five Grandchildren, eight beautiful Great Grandchildren, and also many nieces and nephews. Anne’s husband Samuel Robertson predeceased her, in 1987; also a stillborn son in 1961. There is a family reunion in heaven as Anne was the youngest and last surviving member of the Aron and Anna Janzen family of Lethbridge Alberta. Both parents and all of Anne’s brothers Aron, Frank, Pete, Abe, John and Jake and four others (One sister and three brothers) who died in infancy predeceased her. A family graveside service is planned for Saturday, November 3, 2018, at 2:00 pm at the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Henderson Funeral home is in charge of arrangements. Anyone wishing to pay their respects may do so during regular business hours (9:00-5:00). No flowers by request, instead donations to the Dementia and Alzheimer’s Society of BC. Would be greatly appreciated. http://alzheimer.ca/en/bc
