MAiD showdown looming

Delta Hospice reaffirms position, which keeps it at odds with Fraser Health SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Is a showdown brewing between the Delta Hospice Society and Fraser Health over medically assisted deaths? The society has been at odds with the health region over its policy to provide Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD), which is now legal in Canada, in hospices. Delta Hospice does not want the service offered at its Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner, and although the health region hasn’t gone so far as to threaten it, at least publicly, the society could be stripped of its operating funding if MAiD isn’t provided. The society recently put an ad in the Optimist stating its board of directors completed an engagement with Delta residents, hospice staff and volunteers, and its membership. It also conducted a professional telephone survey across the community. “We found that opinions on MAiD varied widely across the spectrum of all groups engaged. This was also reflected in the discussion at the hospice boardroom table, and no clear consensus

The society has decided not to recommend changing its bylaws and will continue to provide “compassionate and skilled” transfers from the local hospice facility for patients requiring any medical procedure, including MAiD. Saying they haven’t heard from the health region on the issue in a number of months, board president Jim Levin told the Optimist it means the society will be staying the course. He also said it hasn’t received an ultimatum. “Until we hear something that makes us look

into it, the issue has been resolved from our point of view,” Levin said. It was reported last year that the Fraser Health board of directors agreed to phase in implementation of MAiD in hospice settings throughout the health region, however, Delta Hospice Society executive director Nancy Macey at the time said it’s a procedure philosophically at odds with what’s provided in hospice care. It’s something, she said, that could also discourage people from seeking palliative care from hospices. The local society made a presentation to the health region and dis-

cussed options, such as an exemption from providing MAiD at the Irene Thomas Hospice, but were told that’s not an option. “It is important for the community to know that all people have the legal option to choose MAiD to die. In Fraser Health, the procedures can be implemented in hospitals, homes and other places a person may wish. A dedicated site for patients and families for the MAiD procedure has been set up in New Westminster. Therefore, there are not barriers to access,” Macey explained in an interview last December. Fraser Health spokes-

person Jacqueline Blackwell said the region believes hospice is a critical part of the continuum of care and values those who provide the service. “We understand there are controversies surrounding this legal obligation and where and how to implement this. There is no hard and fast date for hospice care. We continue to work with Delta Hospice on their concerns,” she explained. “We need to consider how to offer it in the most patient-centered way we can as we strongly support the patient’s right to choose to access these services. We understand this is a very difficult and emotional issue for people, but we need to remember that at the core of all this is the patient, and we need to work together to find the best solution and path forward.” Delta Hospice has a partnership with Fraser Health for funding of operations of the Irene Thomas Hospice. Delta Hospice also contributes significant funding to enhance the operations annually. The society raised all of the $8.5 million to build the hospice and the adjacent centre for supportive care.

Body found confirmed to be missing TFN member

The body of a man located on the shore of the Tsawwassen First Nation by a dog walker last Wednesday has been confirmed to be Waylon Joe. Joe, a 36-year-old member of the Tsawwassen First Nation, was reported missing to the Delta police by his family on Aug. 18. Joe was last seen on Aug. 13 on TFN lands. “An extensive search was conducted after Waylon was reported

missing, spanning several weeks,” said Supt. Kelly Young, head of Delta Police Department’s investigative services. “Police were joined by the TFN community, Surrey Search & Rescue, RCMP air services and dive team, but unfortunately we were not able to locate him. However our officers continued to work hard, pursuing a number of investigative strategies in an effort to find him.”

Necropsy determines humpback was likely hit by a ship’s propeller IAN JACQUES

A humpback whale found deceased last month in shallow water off the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal was likely hit by a ship’s propeller. Fisheries and Oceans Canada released information late last week on a necropsy done on the Nov. 16 incident. “Necropsy results from the female humpback whale are consistent with catastrophic ship strike with propeller injuries. DFO is investigating,” stated the release. A necropsy was also done on a killer whale calf that was found deceased near Gold River on Nov. 14. The results confirm the

Elders from the Tsawwassen First Nation performed a cultural ceremony to send the whale onto its next journey during the late morning while waiting for fisheries officials to arrive. In the afternoon, a coast guard hovercraft arrived to transport the whale to Sea Island where veterinary pathologist Dr. Stephen Raverty performed the necropsy.

Recent drug testing by Delta police has found toxic and potentially deadly levels of fentanyl in various street drugs, including substances not expected to contain opioids. Based on those tests and concerns, police reached out to the Fraser Health Authority to put out a warning to drug users. “In November we noticed an increase in sudden deaths that were suspected drug overdoses. We had five in November, which is unusual for us,” said Insp. Guy Leeson, who oversees the department’s drug section. “As part of our investigative work, we do testing on the drugs we are seeing and we are noticing higher concentrations of fentanyl. Normally what we’ll see in what they term a safe street dose – if there is a safe street dose – is one to two per cent. What we are getting is as high as eight per cent. What that means is anything over two to 2.5 per cent is considered potentially fatal.” Leeson said after talking with Fraser Health it was felt an alert was warranted

in the interest of public safety. “Delta is kind of an anomaly in that we don’t have a concentration of street users, but what we do have is your recreational users that often use alone and that’s a concern,” he said. “So it’s important to get that message out just that if you are going to be using make sure you are not using alone and take precautions.” Other tips provided by Fraser Health include: • If you do use alone, make a plan to have someone check on you who is prepared to call 9-1-1, give breaths and naloxone. • Stagger use with friends so someone can respond if needed. • Test by using smaller amounts first. • Do not use with alcohol or other drugs. • Call 9-1-1 quickly when you notice something isn’t right — the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act ensures you should not be charged with simple possession, breach of probation or parole. • Find where to get naloxone: https://towardtheheart.com/site-finder.

Wildfire risk in Delta has risen in last decade SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The wildfire risk in Delta has gone up. That’s the warning from fire Chief Paul Scholfield who provided Delta council last week with the city’s updated Community Wildfire Protection Plan, which identifies moderate and high risk wildfire areas. Following another fire in Burns Bog in the summer of 2016, staff recommend updating the plan. The city got a grant from the provincial Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative Program to hire a consultant to undertake an assessment of the old plan. “The 2018 plan was recently completed and the main takeaway is the fire risk potential has risen from low-medium in 2010 to medium-high in 2018,” explained Scholfield. “The increased rating is due to the changing climate and the reclassification of the types of trees in the bog and the watershed areas. The trees are deemed to be a high risk for fire ignition. This increase allows us to take advantage of mitigation funding from UBCM (Union of B.C. Municipalities).” The new plan has 36 recommendations to reduce the wildfire risk in high and moderate risk areas across the city. The highest threats are at the perimeter of Burns Bog and within the Delta Nature Reserve, which require preventative treatment measures. Only Crown or city-owned land are eligible for provincial funding for treatment.

Scholfield noted the updated fire plan does not include private land, so education and communication for property owners will be important. The fire chief’s report to council notes Delta’s budget only allocates $68,000

ness planning workshop, which was accepted by council. The city will also apply for a $100,000 grant to develop a fuel management plan for Delta. Burns Bog has been the site of several serious fires, which can burn under-

ground for months in the methane-rich peat. The last big, stubborn wildfire occurred in July of 2016. It started in an unforested area on the west side of the bog, between 76th and 80th streets, where several

transmission and repeating towers for radio stations are located. Firefighters from across the Lower Mainland and several air tankers and helicopters were mobilized to battle the stubborn blaze.

Fire guts boat

No injuries were reported, but a boat is a total loss following an early morning fire Monday in Ladner Harbour. Delta Fire Department deputy Chief Brad Wilson said crews responded to Mcneelys Way after a report of a boat fire around 12:41 a.m. “It was a 38-foot fishing vessel on fire that was moored to a float,” said Wilson. “No other structures were involved. The boat is a total loss. “We are still investigating, but it does not look suspicious and we don’t have a cause as of yet, but often boat owners leave heaters on these vessels, so that may have been a cause, but we just don’t know at this point. We seem to get a call like this almost every year.”

Too many accidents at Tsawwassen corner Neighbours near 53A Street and 16th Avenue have seen enough, calling on city to take action IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Residents near the intersection of 53A Street and 16th Avenue in Tsawwassen have witnessed or heard more collisions than they can remember. Now they’re calling on the City of Delta to act before someone is killed. Peter Riverio said high speeds, poor visibility and lack of driver attention all contribute to the high number of collisions in the area. He started a petition in June of last year and has been lobbying civic officials and the provincial Ministry of Transportation. Another major accident last week that sent one person to hospital prompted Riverio to once again lobby Delta and contact the Optimist. He said it was lucky that no one was killed in the latest accident, adding only the stone retaining wall on the corner house kept the vehicle from crashing into a home. “I personally have witnessed seven near-miss

SUBMITTED PHOTO

The latest collision at the intersection of 53A Street and 16th Avenue in Tsawwassen saw this car end up against a stone retaining wall on a home’s front lawn. accidents in this intersection over the past two years. Jim [Ormesher], who lives in that corner house, has witnessed 25 to 28 near-miss accidents in the past year alone. “The city used to have a fire hydrant at the corner but it was getting hit all the time. You would figure that if the city was going to move a fire hydrant due to high accidents, you would think they would realize

that they have a problem here.” Angela Yamaoka’s husband was involved in the latest accident. She said the cab of a pick-up truck ended up in the driver’s side of her husband’s vehicle and pushed it into the retaining wall. “It’s so dark and unless you know this corner and you know you have the right of way, accidents happen all the time,” she

said. “He saw the truck coming, but he couldn’t get out of the way. The street light is useless. You can’t see the double solid line.” Riverio said when you get to the corner of the T-intersection, there is no stop sign, no crosswalk and no lights. Drivers do not follow speed limits and constantly cross over the line, he said. “Most drivers don’t

know what to do when they come to this intersection. Most never do 20 km/h around this corner,” he said. The morning and afternoon rush hours, according to residents, are the worst times. When the Optimist was in the area speaking to residents last week there were four near-misses involving vehicles or pedestrians in less than half an hour.

“It is just a matter of time before there will be a fatality either driving or a pedestrian will be hit,” Riverio said. Residents are asking Delta for better illumination, trimming the bushes on one of the corner homes so drivers have better sightlines, a marked crosswalk and a stop sign to slow down traffic. “This all seems like a very inexpensive way to resolve this issue,” added Riverio. “This is an official City of Delta collector route and the only collector route that does not terminate with a stop sign. From what I see, this is the most unsafe collector route in all of Tsawwassen.” Delta’s director of engineering Steven Lan said his department has reviewed all the correspondence from residents and will be coming to Delta council on Dec. 10 with recommendations. “We certainly want to take some action, so there will be a report coming forward to council outlining both short- and longterm action,” said Lan.

W

ith a 10-lane bridge looking more and more like it will never make it past the drawing board, the big question now becomes: What, if anything, is next? Although the NDP government hasn’t come out and formally quashed the $3.5-billion Liberal megaproject, it sounds like it’s only a matter of time before that happens, leaving what has been described as B.C.’s worst bottleneck in limbo. Not long ago that would have been a massive concern as the former government’s ambitious undertaking was the only light at the end of the tunnel, but that might not be the case any longer. In years past the Mayors’ Council wouldn’t even look at the George Massey Tunnel, calling it a provincial responsibility and leaving it out of any regional transportation plan. That stance appears to have softened — whether that’s because it’s largely a new group of mayors or because they feel they’ve got the ear of those in Victoria — which means we’re no longer in an all or nothing kind of scenario. We’ve got new Delta Mayor George Harvie buoyed by the fact the Mayors’ Council is willing to entertain crossing ideas, we’ve got Richmond writing the province asking it to address the tunnel and we’ve got the premier and transportation minister suggesting we need a solution that fits within a regional context. It sounds like we’re in the early days of finding an alternative to the 10-lane bridge, which immediately raises questions about what kind of crossing it will be and when it will be in place. Discussions around the scope of the project will be crucial as it’s likely to be the only infrastructure investment in that area for generations. If we get it wrong, Deltans will be stuck with the consequences for decades. As far as timing goes, given it took about four years to get from concept to ground breaking on the bridge, and it was going to take another five years to actually build the thing, we could be talking another decade or more before we see a new crossing bring any relief. For those stuck in tunnel traffic every day, that’s a real kick in the teeth, but if you’re looking at this from a glass half full perspective, it’s better politicians are musing about the possibilities than not having those conversations at all.

Getting into Christmas spirit is easy when out volunteering

E

very year I get involved in two great causes at Christmas: the Deltassist Toy Depot and Operation Red Nose. This year is no different. Being involved with Deltassist is very rewarding, knowing that we are helping some of the most vulnerable people in our community. Although it offers support throughout the year through many programs, from helping seniors “live in place” in their homes to feeding kids on weekends through the Starfish Backpack program, Christmas is the time most people associate with Deltassist and the Toy Depot. The support the program receives from the community is overwhelming and greatly appreciated. I could more than fill an entire article with the people that help us deliver this program to struggling families. One that was of particular note this year was being chosen as a beneficiary of the Delta Chamber of Commerce at its Hats Off to Excellence awards dinner. The funds raised during the silent auction were donated to Deltassist for its programs, which the agency can make go a long way. As the Deltassist board president, I had the honour of speaking on behalf of the agency, and to thank all those businesses that hold events to fundraise and collect toys for its programs.

Community Comment BRAD SHERWIN

It was an even more special night to be there when Lloyd Jones was named Citizen of the Year. His dedication to our community is also greatly appreciated. I have written about Jones in the past, when he was selling raffle tickets at Tsawwassen Town Centre on behalf of the Shriners. I didn’t win the car, but I had the opportunity to chat with him for about 10 minutes. In my books, that was a better prize anyway. My second opportunity to give back is with Operation Red Nose. Last Saturday I had the chance to spend some time with two of our new city councillors, Alicia Guichon and Dylan Kruger, as we drove around South Delta visiting bars and restaurants and letting people know, if they had a couple of drinks, to give us a call and we’d drive them, in their own car, home. It’s always a fun time, but it’s

that much more fun when you’re in the Rudy suit. So if you found yourself dancing to Drive My Car with a giant reindeer last Saturday night, no, it wasn’t a hallucination, it was me. It’s awfully hot in that suit. And I’m a terrible dancer. But the reception we received everywhere we went was so warm and inviting it makes a late night that much better. And knowing people are getting home safe, that the streets are safer as well, make it worth a late night. So now the lights are up on the house, the tree is out of storage and being assembled, the shopping list is staring me in the face just baiting me to wait until the last minute to buy stuff. It always seems like the best presents appear when the pressure is really on. Maybe that’s what the last minute was invented for. As you visit with family and friends this holiday season, take a little time to reflect on how fortunate we are living where we do, and how special our community is, thanks to a lot of volunteers. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Brad Sherwin, MBA is a longtime resident of South Delta, and has almost 30 years’ experience in marketing, public relations and business strategy. He teaches marketing at Douglas College, coaches hockey goalies and is president of the board of directors at Deltassist.

Don’t expect immediate relief once composter is enclosed

Editor: I have been following the saga of the East Ladner composting facility since the nauseous odour caused a severe public nuisance several years ago. While the intensity of odour has attenuated since the protein feedstock was reduced, the facility is still adversely affecting part of Ladner and can still be considered to be a public nuisance. As such it is remarkable that neither the City of Delta nor Metro Vancouver has been able to regulate it effectively. As reported in the Optimist and at a recent public information meeting, the owner is proposing to construct and operate an enclosed facility that it claims will eliminate the odour problem. I attended the open house on Nov. 13 and came away with mixed conclusions. According to the Optimist, Delta council is cooperating with this initiative by issuing a building permit

The owner proposes to enclose most of the facility and pump the odourous interior air through a biofilter to remove the odour. The composting process will be enhanced by a mechanical rotator system. However, the composting process will remain aerobic, so a lot of fresh air will be required to maintain the oxygen level inside the enclosure. The composting rate and the odour intensity will depend on the nature of the feedstock and the air flow rate. The air will still be discharged to the atmosphere through an uncovered biofilter located outside the enclosure. The intensity of the odour emitted from the facility will depend on the efficacy of the biofilter. According to the owner’s consultant, the process works effectively at other locations and is a proven technology. However it is based on two biological unit processes (decompo-

sition and the absorption by biologic growth on the filter medium), and these vary with the site conditions and feedstock. In particular, the filter efficiency will depend on ambient temperature and rainfall, and these differ here from those in California. In response to my questions on this, the consultant noted that no bench testing has been done to determine appropriate reaction rate constants for a facility in Ladner. Thus I conclude the odour control system will likely work effectively under steady conditions; but it will likely take some time to tune the odour removal system in the prototype facility — perhaps as much as one or two years. Thus I would caution residents of East Ladner not to expect immediate and consistent relief from odours when the facility is enclosed in 2020. Steve Graham

Kindness at checkout makes man cry

Editor: I wanted to share this warm and good citizen story with you. This past week my mom and dad were shopping at the Safeway at Scott Road and 72nd Avenue. My mom was standing with my dad at the cashier as he was loading his groceries onto the runner to have them scanned by the cashier. My mom has dementia and had a teddy bear with her in her arms. A woman standing behind them in line took

the time to talk to my mom and acknowledge her teddy bear she was holding and showed interest in my mom. Then this woman noticed my dad was unloading the groceries from the runner back into the buggy. She asked him what he was doing. My dad forgot his wallet at home and had to put the groceries back to drive home to get his wallet. The woman said she wanted to pay for their groceries. My dad declined her

offer but she said she wanted to do so and said, “Merry Christmas.” The groceries were approximately $60. My dad started to cry as he was in disbelief that there were people like this woman around who care and took the time to pay attention. He was truly grateful and wished he got her name. We need more citizens like this woman in the world to make our days brighter. Cheryl Trampleasure

Councillors getting benefit before end of service

Editor: Re: Council puts an end to golden handshake, Nov. 22 The correct term for this golden handshake, as it’s become known, is actually an “end of service benefit.” Hopefully everyone read the whole article as I see that even though Jeannie Kanakos ($34,199), Bruce McDonald ($48,978) and Lois Jackson ($124,153)

are not at the end of their service, they are taking these amounts which taxpayers did not approve. Is this not fraud? Do these people not have a conscience? Councillors get paid $50,470 a year plus expenses for a part-time job. I also notice that Jackson got appointed as Delta council’s representative to the Metro

Vancouver board where she let her name stand for chair, which would have paid her an additional $77,474. She wasn’t elected to the position (which she held from 2006 to 2011) so she’ll only get $387 for a meeting up to four hours and $775 for longer meetings. Tilly Marxreiter Former Richmond Councillor

Trustees should follow council’s lead on meeting venues

Editor: Thank you to Mayor George Harvie and his council for moving some of their scheduled council meetings to North Delta. The format of their meetings encourages Delta residents to come 30

minutes early to be added to that agenda. Once on the agenda, Delta residents can address the entire council in person during an official meeting. I am hopeful our Delta school trustees will soon follow suit with these two

very important ideas for their official meetings. It would allow all Delta residents to more easily communicate directly with our locally elected school officials in the form of a documented public meeting. Onkar Bahia

DON’T GET

SCAMMED With fraudsters everywhere, local experts offer advice to keep you safe.

Ian Jacques ijacques@delta-optimist.com

F

raud happens in many different and ingenious ways. It’s through cyberattacks on our computers and emails, through our bank accounts and our cell phones. No one is immune from being targeted and it’s only going to get worse. “People are, for the most part, getting away with it and it’s profitable, so why should people stop?” asks Const. Dustin Classen, a member of the economic and technical crime unit of the Delta Police Department. “Most people probably don’t hear the extent of it. Delta has 100,000 people and once a week there is a fraud reported in your Crime Beat that you guys are aware of, but how many go unreported or how many attempts are there?” He says people need to be aware of the warning signs so if an attempt is made by a scammer, they’re prepared to deal with it.

Common scams

Classen says there are many common ones that consistently pop up on the radar of DPD investigators, including the omnipresent Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) scam. “It’s always prevalent. There are a lot of people who are not aware of our tax system or have just moved to Canada or haven’t taken the time to understand a very complex system, so there are a lot of potential victims out there that will get scammed by it,” he says. “CRA will never ask for money or ask for money through Bitcoin or gift cards.” One of the bigger scams that’s likely underreported, according to Classen, involves pyramid schemes. A pyramid scheme is an arrangement in which participants recruit others with returns given to early participants using money contributed by later ones. They only make money by recruiting more participants. Classen says the scheme has been called “Women helping Women” and “Pay it forward” and referred to as “The Cloud’ or “Gifting Circle.”

Payment is strictly in cash and referred to as a gift. Participants are often required or encouraged to use an alias. Those involved are often recruited by friends, family or co-workers and presenters often claim they’ve checked with authorities who have confirmed it’s legal, even though it’s not.

“People are, for the most part, getting away with it and it’s profitable, so why should people stop?” – Constable Dustin Classen “Lots of people have a false understanding of how these work and we have to correct that in people,” Classen says. “There are a ton of victims – a lot of people don’t get money – and also the criminal justice system moves slowly, so even if you see an arrest and a suspect is out on bail, it is still illegal because he will be going to court and he will be going to jail. This is not a victimless crime. “We are not immune to any of these because we are sleepy Delta,” says Classen. “In the case of pyramid schemes, they flow between populations and hopscotch through many jurisdictions across the Lower Mainland, which can make them complicated files to investigate.” Business email compromise is another big one hurting companies in Delta. This happens when a fraudster convinces a business to send a large sum of money to a third party account. The fraudster impersonates business staff by compromising or spoofing their email and then directs accounting staff or clients of the business to send large wire transfers.

Recent Delta investigations

• In September 2017, an accountant for a Delta business received an email request from her boss to transfer $190,000 to a Hong Kong business account. The accountant made the transfer, but then realized her boss’ email was spoofed. The conclusion: the wire transfer was recalled. • In November 2017, suspects gained access to a local company’s email service, began impersonating the accountant and made contact with a company client, providing it with a new deposit account. The client then wired $40,000

December 6, 2018 The Delta Optimist A11

to the suspect’s account. The conclusion: the $40,000 was transferred overseas and not recovered. • In February 2018, a local business had its email either compromised or spoofed, with fraudsters redirecting a $25,000 payment from a client. The conclusion: the money was not recovered.

How to protect your business

• Be wary of unexpected emails requesting urgent wire transfers or account changes • Look closely at the email address • Watch out for suddenly poor or awkward English in emails • For any payment account changes, require a two-step verification (email and confirm by phone to a known phone number) • Consider implementing security tokens • Limit your personal and business information you post online (fraudsters research) • Maintain your computer systems (anti-virus and other software updated) and have them periodically reviewed by IT specialists.

Always report the scam to authorities

“You have to get past the shame if you have been a victim and targeted,” says Classen. “We can’t investigate if we don’t know about it. I think it’s estimated about maybe five per cent of fraud victims actually report. “If you have had your debt card skimmed and your account has been accessed, how many people report that to the police? I bet hardly any. The point is a lot of people don’t even think about reporting to police. They go to the bank, get their money back and problem solved. Well, if we don’t find out about these things, we can’t figure out who is doing it and the scams and frauds just grow and grow.”

Top: Debit and Credit card information being hacked. Above: Experts say using safe guards or locks for your computer will help in securing personal information.

worse, sometimes they will lock the user’s computer and demand ransom to get back into their computer. They will also rifle through files looking for passwords and any sort of financial or banking info they can use to outright steal.” The takeaway here, says Morrison, is that no one should ever let anyone they don’t know access their computer remotely. “If you think you have a virus of some sort, call a known provider like Best Buy or Delta Geeks,” he says. “Install an antivirus like Norton and if your computer has been locked or similar, it usually can be saved by an expert. Don’t pay.” Tsawwassen’s Neville Le What the experts say Page has recently retired as a Tsawwassen’s Craig Morrison financial crime investigator for is a director at a multi-national If you receive unsolicited American Express. He worked computer systems firm and has pressure, say from CRA, or for the past 20 years in the a long background in dealing with viruses and computer field and prior to that was with an offer perhaps from a crime, which is a common way company you are not deal- the RCMP where for two dehackers gain access to your vital cades he specialized in financial ing with, then check it out.” crime investigations. personal information. “Scammers buy ads, misleading One of the frauds that came – Neville LePage sites that look like real comup regularly in his last few years puter service companies or domains that are very with the banks was the gift card scam. close to the real ones with the goal of re-directing “The reason it came to the banks’ attention was the victim to give up access to their computer,” says that people would use their credit cards to buy gift Morrison. “The scammer will then sell ‘service.’ Even cards and then the information is then supplied to

somebody and the customer would be on the hook for the purchase,” says Le Page. “The other one was the CRA (Canadian Revenue Agency) scam and another one was someone would get an email supposedly from their boss asking them to buy gift cards and the result was always the same – someone used their credit card to buy gift cards and then was on the hook for the purchase.” Le Page says an ounce of prevention is definitely worth it. “If you receive unsolicited pressure, say from CRA, or an offer perhaps from a company you are not dealing with, then check it out. A quick Google query will let you know pretty quickly that something is wrong. “It could also be phoning the Delta police, who are a great police force by the way. Tell them you received this call and you think it might be a scam and they can say this is what you should or should not do. Fraud is not reported as often as it happens. When people are a victim of this they might feel embarrassed and think the police can’t do anything about this, but the police can be a very effective resource when it comes to combatting fraud, but they have to know about it.” Le Page says another tip is to ensure all financial documents, like credit card statements, are received electronically versus through Canada Post. “My apartment in Tsawwassen was hit and the mailboxes were broken into, so electronic correspondence is not as vulnerable as hard copy mail correspondence. Everyone should also shred their personal documents before recycling them.”

Paton says legitimate farmers should get option to build up

MLA wants bill amended to accommodate large farm families SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

~ December 7, 1968 ~ Congratulations on Celebrating Your 50th Wedding Anniversary With love from your family Chris, Daniel and Matthew Teresa , Brad, Leah and Sarah Wishing you many more wonderful years together!

The province needs to consider large, multigenerational farm families, says Delta South MLA Ian Paton. The Liberal agriculture critic said he’s heard from farm families that changes are needed to a bill that would restrict the maximum size of a home on Agricultural Land Reserve property to 5,400 square

Homes like this 22,000-square-foot mansion at No. 4 Road and Steveston Highway in Richmond won’t be allowed under new provincial regulations. feet. Farmland being used by speculators looking to build mansions, without intent of farming the land, has been a hot button issue, especially in Richmond where property owners, for the most part, have successfully lobbied city council not to impose more restrictive limits. Now that the province has introduced stricter limits, Paton, who is generally supportive of the legislation, said an exception should be added to allow some homes to be built higher on the same footprint. “I went to a meeting with 400 South Asian farmers who were very, very upset about the home size issue. The

main thing is that I’m totally against these megahomes that they let crop up in Richmond over the years. It’s quite disgusting, 25,000-square-foot homes and bigger situated right in the middle of farms. These are non-farmers,” he told the Optimist. “What we brought forward as an amendment was an even smaller footprint, so they’d be taking up less farmland with the footprint of the house, then they could go up to three floors above that.” Noting legitimate farmers can still apply to the Agricultural Land Commission for variances, Agriculture Minister Lana Popham said what Paton is proposingis, at the end of the day, even bigger

homes on farmland. “It was put forward as an amendment but we had been very clear that 500 square metres was the total non-farmers could build on farmland and he (Paton) suggested 350 square metres but to build up, which would actually allow for 700 square metres of living space. We really made the decision that it should be 500 square metres total because of the issue of affordability. We don’t want speculators who aren’t farmers building larger homes and making those farms out of reach for new or young farmers in the future,” she said. “If you’re not a farmer, you’re stuck at 5,400 square feet, and if you are a farmer, and you have multi-generational needs, one of the things we worked on in the legislation over the last year is how do you support those farmers. We’ve created a pathway for those farmers to go to the Agricultural Land Commission to have bigger homes because we recognize sometimes you need bigger homes.”

Tomorrow night in Ladner will feature a new Christmas tradition followed by one that’s been around for more than 40 years. The Ladner Rotary Club is inviting the whole community to enjoy its inaugural Christmas Tree Lighting event in Memorial Park from 4 to 7 p.m. After co-sponsoring the Ladner Rotary Splash Park with the City of Delta, which attracted thousands during the summer, Ladner Rotarians are hoping the play area in Memorial Park will attract many more for the festive season as club members will light it up with two 65-foot trees as well as decorate the adjacent gazebo area. The lighting of the trees will be at 5:15 p.m. by Rotary Club of Ladner president Kerry-Lynne Findlay and Delta Mayor George Harvie. The event

South Deltans have an opportunity to get a free turkey while also helping out those in need. From 1 to 4 p.m. this Saturday, residents are invited to bring donations for the Deltassist Toy Depot and Christmas hamper program to The Wexford seniors’ community and in exchange they’ll take home a 12- to 15-pound frozen turkey. Without ever leaving their vehicles, participants will enjoy hot chocolate, games and live music by the Caminando Carollers and Angelus Singers. Santa Claus will stop by their car for a visit and an elf will even deliver warm mini donuts. Once they arrive at the front door of The Wexford, a team member

will accept their donation of an unwrapped toy, new children’s pajamas or cash through their vehicle window in exchange for a turkey, complete with cooking instructions and bonus treats. The Wexford will have 500 turkeys to give out and hopes to raise $15,000 in toys, pajamas and cash. For more than 30 years Deltassist has worked with community partners to make Christmas special for families in need. Last year 700 families were assisted through the social services agency’s holiday programs. The Wexford general manager Matthew Jackson said they’re hoping the community will really get behind the new fundraising event. “We wanted to give something back to the community in some

kind of festive way,” said Jackson. “This was one of the ideas that we floated around. When we were in contact with Deltassist, we understand that there was a need for pajamas and kids’ toys, so we came up with an event where people could come through our property in a fast manner, so we’re going to give this a try and hopefully get a ton of donations and toys to help out Deltassist.” Jackson said Bria is purchasing all of the turkeys through one of its suppliers. “Century Group and Bria are really big about giving back,” he said. “It’s going to be three hours of chaos, but we’re hoping for a cool event.” The Wexford is at 173756th St. in Tsawwassen. Access to the event will be from the 18th Avenue entrance.

Pneuma Church is looking to Give this Christmas Away. For the third straight year, the Ladner church based out of the Delta Manor Education Centre is hosting an event where participants can pick up a pair of specially designed food and gift baskets and then gift them to someone they know. “We started off the first year with 150 gift baskets. Last year we did 300 and this year we are going to have at least 400,” said lead pastor Andreas Basson. “Christmas is one of the loneliest times for some people, people who have lost a loved one, elderly people who don’t have family. We want people to know that they are loved and that we care about them.” Basson said the first gift basket will include nicer articles like chocolate, smoked salmon, Brie cheese and popcorn.

Pneuma Church lead pastor Andreas Basson is looking to share the love this holiday season.

“That’s a gift basket for someone that you know that you just want them to know that someone cares and loves them,” he said. “Last year we delivered one to a neighbor and they were at the point of committing suicide because they felt so alone and the gift basket and the card spoke towards that specific need. We have people who have definite needs, so that second basket will have all food, potatoes, ham, etc. for a family in need with food for a few days.” All of the food and items for the two baskets will be

purchased by the church and packaged by members of the congregation available for pick-up starting at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16 when the church puts on its Christmas production. Those that can’t be on hand then can pick up on Friday, Dec. 21. “All people have to do is contact us and say I want gift basket A or gift basket B and we put them all together along with wrapping paper and a card and they just pick them up,” he said. “You can then decide how you want to deliver them, whether you want to sign the card or be anonymous.” The program is not exclusive to Ladner as the church has congregations in 11 Lower Mainland communities. “We also encourage people to add a few items, like toys, something to personalize it a bit more,” Basson said. Little Ladner boy featured in VPD’s Canine Calendar IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

There’s a Ladner connection to this year’s Vancouver Police Canine Calendar. Each year, the Vancouver Police Department selects a child that has benefited from the outstanding care and services provided by BC Children’s Hospital. This year that child is Ladner’s Noah Nilausen.

“My husband works for the Vancouver police and every year we know a child is featured in the calendar. The canine unit approached us because it is pretty well known within the unit that we have been through a lot at Children’s Hospital the past few years,” said Noah’s mom Chelsea. Noah was born severely pre-mature weighing barely more than a pound, so he spent seven months

in the neo-natal intensive care unit at BC Women’s Hospital. “So obviously we feel super grateful to BC Women’s and Children’s Hospital because without them, their care and support we know Noah would not have survived.” Chelsea said the family has endured much since Noah, who is now three, was born. “He had a lot of close calls and we knew before

he was born he might not make it, so we feel very fortunate due to the treatment he received he is here today,” she added. “He sees 13 specialists at Children’s on a regular basis and has ongoing issues. We are frequent visitors here. A lot of people associate spending time in hospital as a scary thing, but we have always felt like it is our home away from home. We feel very comfortable here, and

know many of the staff in the different wards.” Another reason why the family felt it was important to be a part of the calendar was to raise awareness of the good work being done at both hospitals. All proceeds from the sale of the calendars go to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation and the BC Cancer Foundation. The calendars sell out each year. Last year the project raised $32,000. Living Matters

Back in the day, shopping was an all-day affair. The girlfriends and I would meet at the mall. We wouldn’t have had much of a sense of what we were looking for, and our purses weren’t exactly bursting with cash. Never mind. We would amble around anyway, oohing and aahing at the sweaters on the mannequins and the shoes in the windows. We would try on a gazillion pairs of jeans and cords, sling purses over our shoulders and admire ourselves in the mirror. Back in the day — and by that, I mean pre-

marriage, pre-children and pre-mortgage — the girlfriends and I would meet at the mall pretty much every weekend. The morning done, we would convene in a restaurant, order fries and Cokes and applaud each other’s purchases. And when our less-than-nutritious snack was consumed, we’d go out and amble again. I mention this because we are thick in the middle of shopping season, and because my relationship with the mall is, well, somewhat different than it used to be. I do not spend the day there. I do not try on six pairs of cords, let alone a ga-zillion. I do not stop for fries and a Coke. And I never amble around. I park, walk quickly to a store that’s been identified well in advance, and hastily look for what I came for. “Can I help you?” the clerk will ask. “Or are you just browsing?” “Not browsing,” I will say. “I am looking for a black sweater with long

sleeves, silver buttons and a V neck. Medium. And no more than $39.99.” This is what happens when you have things going on in your life. Sure, back in the day I had things going on in my life, but let’s just say, they were different types of things. I spent hours painting my toenails, watching American Bandstand and chatting on the phone with the girlfriends. I did not spend hours grocery shopping, vacuuming, banking, ironing, cooking, weeding and commuting to and from work. When I go Christmas shopping, I take what you might call a purposeful approach. I plot my route. I plot my budget. I take a list that says: three paperback children’s books, one dozen Titleist golf balls, one grey hoodie with navy lining and four packages of wrapping paper, gold, silver or green. If I’m not in and out of the mall in 15 minutes, I won’t be on top of my game.

Earthwise honours volunteers vital to non-profit’s operations

Earthwise Society hosted a volunteer appreciation tea last month to wrap up the season and to recognize the valuable contributions its volunteers make. Volunteers mingled, shared ideas and snacked on treats provided by Thrifty Foods, Monte Cristo Bakery, Meridian Farm Market and Cobs Bread. From tending the garden to running the farm store, volunteers perform many essential tasks that are crucial to daily operations. They assist with growing and harvesting, greet visitors at special events, and reach out to help others stay active and healthy. Volunteers often find ways to share their own knowledge and interests with others as they pursue special projects at the Earthwise Garden. Carpenters, naturalists, artists and teachers have all contributed to helping Earthwise serve the community. Earthwise Society focuses on a wide range of community sustainability issues, and offers programs related to environmental awareness and education, food security and mental health. All the programs rely on volunteer support. Volunteers agree that lending a hand at Earthwise can be rewarding. “I really enjoy my

Like many of you, I can’t believe that it’s already the end of the year. So what can you do to make this December one you won’t forget? December represents the end pages on your 2018 chapter. Let’s take a moment and think about this. Sometimes we allow things that needed to be settled this year to roll into next year’s story. We allow loose ends to be left untied, and many times those loose ends fill major pages in our next year. If you take some time and make some hard decisions now, it might be one of the best gifts you give yourself this season. Don’t hold back the forgiveness, love, gentleness, kindness, joy or

ful ending to 2018 which will propel you into new beginnings. For me this year has been full of adventures, challenges, breakthroughs and also heartache. That’s life, my friends. How you want this chapter to end, you get to decide. The pen is in your hand and God will give you the strength and ability to write. So maybe take some time, read your bible, pray and close this year well. Just so there is no doubt, Jesus is the reason for the season... God gave His Son, the greatest gift ever. Because of that great gift... Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Have a wonderful Christmas.

The Lipstick Project is looking to bring a touch of care and dignity to those in need in South Delta. The Lipstick Project is small Greater Vancouver charity that provides free, professional hair, massage and nail services to men, women and children facing significant health challenges. In its fifth year of service, donations and support from Lower Mainland communities has empowered the North Shorebased charity to reach 655 men, women and children. Almost entirely volunteer run and operated, The Lipstick Project exists to provide dignity, respite, and practical and compassionate care to people who are facing some of the hardest times of their lives. “It was founded by myself and a group of friends in response to a personal experience I had at the North Shore Hospice,” said executive director Leigh Schumann. “We currently have 66 active volunteers who visit 10 partner locations across Metro Vancouver to deliver services on a bi-weekly basis.” The Lipstick Project has recently started a partnership with the Delta Stroke Recovery Society to provide manicures and hand

We had an existing relationship with the North Shore Stroke Recovery Society, which has been going really well, so I think from word of mouth, Delta picked it up and reached out and requested we start working together to serve their community,” she

said. The goal now is to get the required nail techs, massage therapists, RMTs, reiki practitioners, healing touch practitioners and reflexology practitioners in place as well as a general volunteer to organize things on site. “This is our first time reaching out into Delta. We are very excited to come into Delta and get to

Delta Music Makers will be making holiday music

The beautiful sounds of the Delta Music Makers will soon be heard all around town. The concert band is celebrating its 35th year with three concerts during the festive season: • Sunday, Dec. 9, 2 p.m., McKee Seniors Recreation Centre in Ladner. Entry fee is $9 charged by McKee to include wine and cheese afterwards. • Tuesday, Dec. 11, 7 p.m., Ladner Community Centre. accepted by KinVillage. The Music Makers are known for their audiencefriendly repertoire, instrumental features, vocal soloist and audience participation. “It is so nice to meet someone on the street who says, ‘Oh, you’re that conductor guy’ and it’s accompanied by a laugh or smile,” says conductor Curt Jantzen, founder of the Delta Music Makers. “This is the effect we love to see. Our audiences tell us that our Christmas music is not only enjoyable but also memoryprovoking, bringing back good memories from younger years.” The band will perform

The Tuesday, Dec. 11 evening will include a short Music Makers performance, several Delta Idol soloists, a short set by the Delta Concert Band and a singalong grand finale. The Music Makers would also like you to mark your calendars for the 15th edition of Ladner Bandfest on June 1 and 2, 2019, when 19 concert bands will descend on Memorial Park for two days of free performances.

Tsawwassen actor Cameron Thomson is set to star in Metro Theatre’s Christmas panto production of King Arthur’s Court. Thomson plays Sir Lancelot, who is described as a very, very French young man who drives the ladies of the court wild with desire. He is one of a group of funny Knights of the Round Table. King Arthur’s Court is a story using song and dance to tell the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Borrowing from Camelot and Monty Python and the Holy Grail, it features Young Arthur meeting Merlin. As Arthur matures he meets Guinevere and subsequently forms the Knights of the Round Table. There is also a firebreathing dragon (with

throat problems) and the “Dame” — a man dressed as a woman — the mainstay of any panto. Mrs. Baker is the castle cook (not a good one) and has a few malfunctions in the kitchen. A cast of 28 singers, dancers and actors brings the show to life in medieval costumes. Thomson began acting in Grade 8 in a South Delta Secondary production of Annie. He was also in the Tsawwassen high school’s productions of The Sound of Music, Beauty and the Beast and Alice in Wonderland. “Acting, singing and dancing defined my time at high school as I was in all but one of the productions in my time there,” he said. After high school he fulfilled a childhood dream of acting on the Metro Theatre stage in a pantomime playing Robin

Hood in Robin Hood and Marion. The Metro cast is collecting coffee and tea donations that will go to the Ladner Legion. The Legion calls the many community meetings it has round tables and advertises them as such, so the Knights of the Pantomime Table are helping out their fellow military with donations of the popular beverages. The show runs Dec. 14 to Jan. 5 at the Metro Theatre, 1370 Marine Dr. SW, Vancouver. Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. while there are nine matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets are $28 for adults and $18 for children for the evening shows and $32 for adults and $20 for children for the matinee shows. Tickets can be purchased at: tickets@ metrotheatre.com or by calling 604-266-7191.

Primary program dispels gender stereotypes

British-based initiative pays visit to Hawthorne Elementary as perceptions are developed early SANDOR GYARMATI

Sgyarmati@delta-optimist. com

Pilots and firefighters don’t have to be men, nor do kindergarten teachers and nurses have to be women. That was the message delivered to students in

grades 1 to 4 at Hawthorne Elementary late last month in a program called Primary Futures: Drawing Our Futures. The aim is to broaden horizons of primary children, reduce gender stereotypes and help youngsters make links between their lessons and their

futures. All that can have a positive impact on their educational attainment, according to the program run by the British charity Education and Employers, in partnership with the National Association of Head Teachers. Nick Chambers, lead researcher with the initiative, has travelled the world to share his research, which revealed children establish career gender stereotypes very early on, by the age of seven in many cases, and if exposed to real people in the workforce are more readily able to change their views. He visited the Ladner school where the students had drawn pictures of what they thought their futures could hold. Some anticipated patterns developed as girls chose jobs such as teachers and moms while boys chose occupations such as emergency services and pro athletes, according to the Hawthorne teachers who participated in the exer-

Students at Hawthorne Elementary hear what it’s like flying an airplane from pilot Candace Heinze. cise. The following week members of the workforce, including a male nurse, female scientist, female police officer, female pilot and male kindergarten teacher, talked to the students and answered questions about the careers that are quite clearly open to both genders. “We’re trying to bring learning to life. We’re showing how what they’re

learning in school is all highly relevant, whether it’s science or history, and by meeting adults who use those for their job, it makes learning even fun,” Chambers told the Optimist. He said adults should not be providing career advice in primary schools but instead focus on broadening horizons and raising aspirations to give children a wide range of

experiences. “There are a range of attributes, skills and behaviours that can be encouraged in this early stage of a child’s life that will leave them in the best possible position as they begin their transitions to secondary education and to future life,” Chambers stated. Hawthorne teacher Rosemary Harris said the goal is to make kids understand the world is really open for them. The Industry Training Authority (ITA) and the Delta School District brought the program to Hawthorne. The ITA’s Lisa Ayton said only 15 per cent of young people entering the trades are females, another area that should change. “Exercises like this can really break stereotypes for girls, but also for boys who may want to choose a career in something like being a nurse,” Ayton said. “So we want to open up and broaden their ideals,” she said.

This amendment would eliminate the requirement for a development permit for form and character of new single detached and duplex dwellings in North Delta, as well as significant additions to existing single detached and duplex dwellings in North Delta. The elimination of the North Delta Development Permit Area for Intensive Residential Development (ND14) would result in a more streamlined process, including reduced time and fees, and it would be less prescriptive in terms of design. It would also make the process for single detached and duplex residential development in North Delta consistent with other urban areas in the City. If Council approves the removal of the North Delta Development Permit Area for Intensive Residential Development (ND14), all single detached dwellings and duplexes in North Delta would continue to be regulated by “Delta Zoning Bylaw No. 7600, 2017”. “Delta Zoning Bylaw No. 7600, 2017” applies to all lands within the City of Delta.

The Celebration of Life Tree is at the Centre for Supportive Care in Ladner. of the most difficult times of the year for those whose loved one has died or is unwell. It is a time when families gather and celebrate together. This may bring up painful memories of the person who is no longer present or able to join in the festivities. For the past 25 years, the Delta Hospice Society has displayed a Celebration of Life Tree where the community is given the opportunity to honour and remember the life of someone who has died or to commemorate someone unwell. A tribute card is available on which to write a person’s name and/or a special message, which is then placed on the tree or mantel. Another card may be taken home as a

memento. “Placing a tribute on the tree becomes symbolic of the love and memories that we carry in our heart, and helps us to remember the experiences we share or have shared,” said Nancy Macey, executive director of the Delta Hospice Society. The community is invited to drop by the Centre for Supportive Care (4631 Clarence Taylor Cres., Ladner) between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. until Dec. 31. Centre volunteers will be present to listen to people who wish to share memories. Donations are appreciated, but they are not required. B.C.’s natural gas supply may be limited this winter

Reduce your use Due to the rupture of the Enbridge-owned natural gas transmission pipeline earlier this fall, B.C.’s natural gas supply will be restricted this winter. Although Enbridge has repaired their pipeline, it is operating at a limited capacity, meaning B.C.’s natural gas system may be challenged during times of peak demand this winter. Terrific 2018 earns Fraser Buck Skipper of the Year honours from B.C. Sailing MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

What began as a family pastime has evolved into much more for Fraser Buck. The Grade 12 student at South Delta Secondary School is an accomplished sailor who has thrived on the international stage. He was seventh at the U.S. Nationals in Boston this past summer and fifth at the U.S. MidWinters in San Diego last spring. He also competed at regattas in Houston, Toronto, Kingston and Helsinki, as well as local events. Buck was recently recognized for his outstanding season by being named B.C. Sailing’s Youth Skipper of the Year. The Optimist caught up with Buck this week to discuss his ascend to becoming a world class sailor and what’s next in his promising career.

Fraser Buck and Zach Spicer competed in regattas throughout North America this year. year and half later I moved onto a (14-foot long) 29’er. It’s more of a high performance boat. That’s when we started to do regattas in North America. We went to San Diego and was near the back being my first time.

Fraser Buck How were you introduced to sailing and eventually racing? “My dad is a good sailor and a member of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club (RVYC). He did this when he was younger too. All of us (two brothers and a sister) know how to sail but I’m the only one who races. “I actually didn’t really like it until maybe Grade 9. I started in a 420 which is a two-man boat and joined (the RVYC) race team. A

What led to your significant improvement in races? “It was mainly just knowing the boat. It’s tricky and it takes time to get used to it. It just goes faster and capsizes more often. It also takes more athleticism to sail the boat. In the 29’er you also have to really trust your partner a lot more than the 420. “This past year I sailed with Zach Spicer. He is from White Rock and also a member (at RYVC). Through the winter, I typically train Tuesday and Thursdays after school although right now the days are too short. In the spring and fall it’s four days a week and in the summer is when you are travelling a lot. For

Boston, we trained five straight days and it was followed by three days of racing.” Do you have to own your own boat to race competitively? “You can charter a boat from the club and pay monthly fees or you can split the costs with your partner or just one can own it. Zach owned the boat so I just paid him monthly. You can trailer it to most regattas in North America. We took it to Boston. Obviously taking it to Europe would be expensive so you mostly charter over there.” What is a typical race? “It’s like you start on the down wind end and then there is a start line that’s even with the wind. Then you have to zig zag up wind to get to the top mark then you round it and come down. Then there’s a gate you can round at either end. You try to figure which one is farther up wind because it’s

less distance. Then you go back up around the mark and through the finish which is next to the start line.” Physically, what does it take to be an accomplished sailor? For the 29’er have to be really agile and also pretty strong too. Any weight has its advantage in different conditions. A lightweight team, say combined at 240 pounds, you would be really good in light air. If the wind picks up you won’t do a well. We were on the heavier side at 290 which is pretty good. Combined you wouldn’t want to be more than 300.” What lies ahead in 2019? Maybe going to the Worlds in Poland and seeing how I would do there. Zach is going to university now so I will need a new partner. Right now, I’m sailing one man laser boats but don’t know how well I would do at it competitively. 4863 Central Ave $663,000 Open House Sunday 2 - 4

Paxton named Canadian player of the year

Ladner’s James Paxton has been named winner of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s 2018 Tip O’Neill Award as player of the year. Canada’s baseball shrine presents this honour annually to the Canadian player judged to have excelled in individual achievement and team contribution while adhering to baseball’s highest ideals. Nicknamed “Big Maple,” the 6-foot-4 southpaw became the first Canadian pitcher to throw a major league no-hitter on Canadian soil against the Toronto Blue Jays on May 8 at Rogers Centre. That performance came just six days after he had set a Canadian record by striking out 16 batters on May 2 in a start against the Oakland A’s. In all, the 30-year-old had eight starts in which he struck out at least 10 batters and went 11-6 with a 3.76 ERA and fanned 208 batters in 160 1/3 innings. His 208 strikeouts are the second-most by a Canadian left-hander in a major league season and he became one of only two pitchers in big league history to notch 200 strikeouts in a season in 161 or fewer innings. Paxton, who was traded by the Seattle Mariners to the New York Yankees on Nov. 19, is a first-time winner of the award. The 30-year-old held off strong competition from Cincinnati Reds slugger and seven-time winner Joey Votto, Toronto Blue Jays super prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tyler O’Neill. “I am extremely honoured to have been

named the Tip O’Neill award winner for 2018. I am proud to be representing Canada in Major League Baseball and try to do so to the best of my ability. I will continue to give everything I have to be the best baseball player and person I can be. Thank you so much to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum for recognizing my efforts” said Paxton. On top of his strong on-the-field performance, the Delta Secondary School graduate has also been active in charitable and community endeavors in the Greater Vancouver area. He has donated signed memorabilia and game tickets to various charities and has volunteered to provide pitching lessons to youth in the region. To determine the winner, the Hall takes into account a number of criteria, including each candidate’s on-the-field performance, contributions to their team, community and charitable endeavors and support in fan voting. Starting on Nov. 15, the Hall had encouraged fans to vote for their top three candidates and they responded by casting their votes via e-mail and on the Hall’s website. “James Paxton had an outstanding season in 2018,” said Scott Crawford, the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s director of operations. “Not only did he make history when he became the first Canadian to throw a major league no-hitter on Canadian soil, but he also struck out batters at a near-record rate over the course of the season. He’s definitely a worthy recipient of the award.”

Playoff heartbreak for Pacers & Devils atprovincial volleyball championships It was a second straight year of early round heartbreak for the Delta Pacers at the B.C. “AAA” Boys Volleyball Championships. After an encouraging day of power pool play that produced a 2-1 record, the province’s seventh ranked team bowed out in the round of 16 on Thursday with a five set loss to No. 9 Argyle. The Fraser Valley runners-up look poised to advance to the semi-finals after jumping out to a two set lead in the best-of-five affair thanks to 25-13 and 25-19 wins. However, the Pipers staved off elimination with a 25-21 game three triumph and momentum then took over like it does in no other high school sport. Argyle produced a convincing 25-18 set four triumph then completed the rally with a 15-10 win in the decisive game. A year ago, the Pacers were the No. 4 seed and fell in the very same round to No. 12 Penticton. It was that very same match-up that followed in consolation play on Friday morning and again it was the Okanagan school coming out on top. Delta took the opening set 25-21 and the Lakers rallied to win a dramatic 31-29 second game. It was then a 15-10 triumph in the third. The Pacers’ tournament run ended later that afternoon with a three-set loss to Nanaimo’s Dover Bay. Meanwhile in Penticton, the South Delta Sun Devils came ever-so-close to pulling off a round-of-16 upset at the B.C. Girls “AAAA” Championships. The tournament’s 14th seed went toe-for-toe with Moscrop — falling in five sets to the No. 6 ranked Burnaby school (16-25, 25-21, 13-25, 25-23, 14-16). The Sun Devils rebounded with a straight set win over Okanagan Mission (25-15, 25-10) before dropping matches to Fraser Valley rivals Mission (23-25, 22-25) and Earl Marriott (23-25, 20-25) to finish 12th. In Nanaimo, the Southpointe Academy Titans con-

The Tsawwassen school went 3-1 in pool-play then lost 3-0 to Credo Christian in round of 16 play. The girls bounced back with a 2-0 win against Fort St. James before falling 2-0 to Fernie. They closed out the tournament with a 2-1 win against Vancouver’s Stratford Hall.

In Memory of Margaret Redway

December 1937 - 2014 Loved and in our lives forever: Brian, Fenella, Veronica, Janna, Samara, Solana, Mackai, June in Oakville, extended family in Australia.

OBITUARIES

JOE, Waylon Leigh Davis April 11, 1982 ~ August 14, 2018 The Joe family is sad to announce the passing of their son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. At the young age of 36, Waylon passed away suddenly to be with his ancestors.

PINGLE, Elizabeth (Betty) March 1926 - November 2018 Betty passed away unexpectedly on November 17, 2018, with her daughters by her side. Betty was a warm, loving, generous person and was always ready with kind, encouraging words and support. Along with her family and friends, travel was a big part of Betty’s life. A six-month trip to Europe while in her twenties was only the beginning of a lifetime of world excursions. In the past few months alone, she enjoyed trips to Haida Gwaii, Alaska and Mexico. Never one to sit idle, Betty enjoyed reading, knitting and especially, sewing. She created hundreds of baby quilts, finishing her last three quilts, in preparation for upcoming Christmas craft fairs, on the day before she went into hospital. Betty has been a blessing in the lives of her family and in the lives of many of those who knew her. Betty is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Laura (Robert), Diane (Mark), Jo-anne (Ben), sonin-law, Eberhardt, and grandchildren Ashley (Tyler), Joshua, Jackson, Sarah, Bryan, Andrew, Wesley, and Markus. Betty also leaves behind her first great-grandchild, Emma. It was a joyous occasion for Betty when she first held Emma in her arms. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 59 years, Jack, and daughter Susanne. Betty had a strong and abiding faith in the Lord, and is with Him now. She will be truly missed, but forever cherished in our hearts.

Waylon had a kind heart, loving soul, and gentle spirit and will be missed by many. Prayers Friday, December 7, 2018 at 6:00pm TFN Recreation Center at 1929 Tsawwassen Drive, Tsawwassen, BC

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, December 8, 2018 at the Tsawwassen Alliance Church, 4951-12th Avenue, Delta, B.C. at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow.
