Hall is turned into toy store Community comes together to ensure gifts under tree for every child in Delta IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Tables of games, train sets, Lego and more stuffed animals than the eye could see filled the East Delta Hall last week. For the 20th year, the community rallied in support of the Christmas Toy Depot, just one of the programs offered to those less fortunate in our community by Deltassist. On the Monday morning the Optimist was on hand — just 24 hours from the Toy Depot opening its doors — it was a flurry of activity. Volunteers from Envision Financial, CIBC, the North Delta Real Canadian Superstore, Delta firefighters and local service clubs were all on hand either dropping off toys or setting up displays in preparation for three days of giving that ensures all children have something under the tree come Christmas morning. Lisa Schmitke from Envision said they had seven volunteers helping out. “We add new team members every year because this is an event

Staff from CIBC were among the many volunteers helping set up the Toy Depot at the East Delta Hall. that warms the heart at Christmas time,” said Schmitke. “We are very community oriented so it feels really good for us to come out and be able to set up for families to come and get some of the Christmas spirit. When the team members find out what we are doing, more and more want to join every year. It just blows you away to see the amount of toys, donations and volunteers. It just seems like it gets bigger and bigger every year. We always have lots of fun.”

John Burr, president of the Delta Firefighters Charitable Society, said his organization has been involved for the past six years. “Number one, it’s a Delta charity. Number two, it involves children and families of Delta and three, we just enjoy giving back to the community. We also have a lot of fun too. We’ve donated more than $40,000 to them. We want to keep as much of what we raise right here in Delta.” Lorraine Yates, manager

of seniors and community services at Deltassist, said vehicles lined up on both sides of the road to drop off donations. “We easily had 40 to 50 volunteers here this morning ready to go,” said Yates. “Usually we help about 700 children get toys, and that’s about 400 to 500 families, who will also get food hampers and other food hampers will also go to families without children.” Yates said the generosity of the community and the army of volunteers makes

the event work. “And it’s just not today (the day we set up) or the three days we have the toy store. It’s also everyone who comes to our office for weeks prior to this and sorts all the toys, boxes them and labels them,” Yates said. “We run around like crazy picking things up, visiting schools. There are two dedicated people that are staffed for this program, but over 300 volunteers. We couldn’t do this without volunteers. It’s pretty amazing.”

It was a flurry of activity at Paridon Horticultural Ltd. on Monday as volunteers sorted and boxed hundreds of items for the annual Deltassist food hamper campaign. “It’s a two-week operation,” said volunteer Bob Taggart, one of the representatives from the Ladner Legion. “We get a list from Deltassist and each one of the service groups that are involved go out and picks up all of the donations. We set up here and sort and box everything.” Taggart said the community support for the annual hamper campaign is tremendous. “Monte Cristo Bakery donates all the bread. We have five local farmers who donate all of the potatoes and root vegetables, Kings Links donates two pallets of Kraft Dinner and, of course, all the

canned goods and other items from the schools,” he said. “Stores all over Ladner also have donation bins too, so it’s truly a community-wide effort in both South (Delta) and North Delta.” The groups involved this year include: TOOBs, Ladner PHOTO BY ADRIAN MACNAIR Legion and Volunteers sort through donations as they prepare Christmas Ladies Auxiliary, food hampers. “We will add the turkeys on Saturday, but all the food and veg will be already packed and ready to go,” he said. “It’s a convoy — just one car after another. We’re usually out of here in a couple of hours. A lot of us have been doing this for more than 30 years.” Colleen Danes, community services coordinator at Deltassist, said more than 560 families will receive food hampers this year. “It’s about the same as last year, but we are finding the families are larger this year,” said Danes. “Even with the Toy Depot, less people coming in, but picking up things for larger families, so five-plus kids. We will have larger food hampers for families.” “The volunteers are amazing,” Danes said. “They blow me away with how organized they are. They make people’s Christmas.”

Bridge shelved in favour of more study Province to consult with region’s mayors to come up with new plan for Fraser River crossing SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Commuters will have to use the George Massey Tunnel for several more years — and perhaps for much longer than that. In a long-awaited announcement Monday, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claire Trevena and consultant Stan Cowdell confirmed the former Liberal government’s $3.5-billion, 10-lane bridge won’t be moving ahead. Instead, the provincial government will begin consultations with the regional Mayors’ Council early next year on a new crossing. In the interim, there will be upgrades to the existing tunnel and road system costing $40 million, money that will be “absolutely well spent,” according to Trevena. Cowdell, who undertook a review of the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project, began the joint announcement by summarizing his technical findings, noting a 10-lane bridge was not the best way to go. He sug-

The previous Liberal government’s $3.5-billion, 10-lane bridge project has officially been killed. The NDP says a technical review confirmed it was the wrong project for the region. gested alternatives could include a smaller six- or eight-lane bridge or an eight-lane tunnel. The existing tunnel could also be part of a future solution, Cowdell said. “The 10-lane Massey bridge project was pushed ahead without the input of communities,” said Trevena. “The technical review of the project has confirmed this was the wrong project for the

region. We need a better solution for this crossing to get people out of traffic and home with their families.” Last September, the Green-backed NDP government suspended the $3.5-billion project that also involved a series of road and interchange improvements on both sides of the Fraser River. The province then appointed Cowdell to lead

an independent technical review. Taking shots at the previous government, Trevena promised to consult with regional mayors but gave no timeline for a potential crossing, other than to say a business case on a preferred option would be ready by the fall of 2020. “People are frustrated with the unacceptable congestion and bottleneck

at the George Massey Tunnel and we understand that. Had the former government looked at the options fully and objectively, we wouldn’t be in this situation, but they did push ahead with a $3.5-billion mega project without listening to communities. We won’t make the same mistake,” she said. Interim measures include new lighting in the

tunnel and improvements to the road network on both sides of the tunnel. Delta Mayor George Harvie said he appreciated Trevena contacting him last week to give him a heads-up about the province’s next steps for the project, but he said he’s not happy about the timeline. “Based on my experience and the province’s anticipated timeline of fall 2020 to develop a business case, this creates a completely unacceptable timeframe for our residents and businesses,” Harvie said. He said he would ask area mayors and First Nations chiefs to come together to explore options for expediting the process. “The people south of the Fraser are not prepared to wait eight to nine years for an improvement to their quality of life and daily commute. We need to do everything possible to push the government to implement a solution so that we can reduce this traffic bottleneck well in advance of the current anticipated timeframe.”

Liberals slam NDP delay in addressing tunnel Wilkinson calls plan a Band-Aid solution, while Paton says it’s a slap in the face for commuters SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The George Massey Tunnel is a traffic catastrophe and it’s only getting worse, says Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson. “The Massey Tunnel is a serious safety hazard. Today’s announcement shows the NDP is planning Band-Aid solutions, like minor upgrades to the tunnel or a small bridge. Neither of these options will get commuters home to their families sooner or more safely. We need a solution that plans for the next century, not a half-baked effort from the NDP,” Wilkinson stated. Joined by Delta South MLA Ian Paton and RichmondQueensborough MLA Jas Johal, the Liberal leader wasted no time slamming the Ian Paton province’s announcement on Monday that the former Liberal government’s $3.5-billion, 10-lane bridge project is dead. “After months of waiting, people in the Lower Mainland want results, not more study. This is a slap in the face to those who spend hours every week idling in this huge traffic jam. It has been studied to death, the reports all say the same thing: a replacement is needed and needed now,” said Paton. “Maybe the minister and the premier don’t drive south of the Fraser, maybe they’ve never been stuck in what has become a massive parking lot,” added Paton. “Why in the world are they condemning thousands of drivers to another decade of delays and frustrations? It seems everyone knows the tunnel needs to be fixed now, except the NDP.” A New Democrat caucus press release took aim at the previous Liberal government and former transportation minister Todd Stone, accusing them of an “elbows up” approach by trying “to jam through a costly $3.5 billion 10-lane bridge that was rejected by communities across Metro Vancouver. And they tried to make drivers pay for it with unfair tolls.” Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon said, “People in my region have been clear

that they want a solution to congestion, but they also want the best value option and to ensure we don’t solve one problem by creating many others.” In September 2017,

the New Democrat government announced it was suspending the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project, an initiative of the previous Liberal government that

would have seen a bridge constructed by 2022. The shovel-ready project had received its environmental assessment certificate and had completed the bidding process.

The NDP government hired Stan Cowdell to lead a review of the project and options, a report the province received this summer but didn’t make public until this week.

Transportation Minister Claire Trevena said a business case will be ready for a preferred option by the fall of 2020, but wouldn’t say when a new crossing would be constructed.

Looking for a connection on Christmas Day? Missing family or friends? Then why not check out the Jingle & Mingle Community Christmas Dinner in Ladner. The fourth annual free Christmas Day dinner, hosted and organized by Jeff, Shirley and TJ Brown, will be held this year at All Saints Anglican Church hall (4755 Arthur Dr.) with doors opening at 3:30 p.m. and dinner at 5 p.m. “With each year the

attendance and our connection with the community grows,” says Jeff. “We continue to host this event to show our appreciation for the many years that this community has supported our family. “This event is a wonderful way to create a fun, loving space for people who are new to our community, people who are alone on Christmas Day and/or people who want to share and connect with others.” Besides the homestyle Christmas dinner, there will be live music from Alex Whitaker and a

chance to socialize with others in the community. Come early and play some cards, board games, etc., the Browns encourage. Volunteers are welcome and Jeff says many hands makes for light work. “Our gratitude goes out to the kind support we received from the many volunteers and local businesses in the past years,” he says. A belief in Santa Claus turned into a bit of a Christmas miracle recently for a young Ladner girl. Dana Kaneko said her six-year-old daughter Sachi had wanted a cat for as long as she could remember. “Last week I broke down and took my kids to the Delta (Community) Animal Shelter to look at the cats. Oliver, a twoyear-old cat that had been surrendered by his previous owner, picked my kids. They were completely in love with him and we took him home the next day.” She said it was an early Christmas gift for Sachi. “He sleeps with my daughter every night and puts up with being carried all around the house,” said Kaneko. She said the cat had only been with the family for four nights when it got spooked and bolted out the door while the kids were leaving for school. Kaneko posted on the Ladner’s Landing Facebook group and her own personal page, and even went door-to-door looking for Oliver. “The community lit up with support. It was amazing the amount of people that took the time to search for him,” she

She went and sat on Santa’s knee and asked for two things: the return of her kitty and a spy kit. Santa was absolutely amazing. He told her it was a very tall order but he would try his best.” Kaneko said Santa also took the time to speak to Sachi about cats and how they have a tendency to come back. Sachi also wrote Santa a note during

the event with the same message. “Well, 1:30 a.m. that morning a very cold, hungry and dirty kitty returned home. It was a Christmas miracle and I have a true believer in Santa on my hands,” said Kaneko. “We also received Santa’s response to her letter, which was amazing. It was personalized mentioning the happy return of her cat. Only in Ladner would so many people take the time to care this much.”

It took another three-and-a-half years before ground was broken on a $3.5-billion, 10-lane bridge project, only to have a change in government put all that on hold. The new government officially stuck a knife into that mega bridge earlier this week, using a report from an Ontario engineer as cover to kill an initiative it never liked. If you can overlook all the wasted time and money, you can justify this week’s move as the NDP’s prerogative, but what’s not up for debate is the fact we’re now back where we were more than five years ago. Just as Clark’s Liberals began a consultation process following her announcement to the UBCM, the province will now consult with the Mayors’ Council to determine where we go from here. I imagine there will be several crossing options to consider, followed by consultations, a decision and then a lengthy approval process, which could get even longer if a twinned tunnel requires the feds to get involved. Transportation Minister Claire Trevena would only commit to a business case being in place by 2020, but there’s no timeline on when a crossing would be built and no government commitment to actually fund the undertaking, so we’re actually worse off than 2013 in the sense that not only have the last five years been for naught, but the road forward is uncertain. The notion that we need a whole bunch more analysis is laughable. The Liberals studied it at length, the NDP’s hand-picked engineer reviewed what had been done and the government has now been in possession of that review for the past six months, yet the minister is talking about another couple of years to come up with a business case. I’m sorry but the worst bottleneck in B.C. deserves better than that. If the 2013 announcement wasn’t going to produce a bridge until 2022, how long before we see something come out of a late 2018 announcement? I’m not sure those stuck in traffic at the tunnel everyday want to hear that answer.

It takes a village to make a village, so let’s get moving

I

’ve been feeling the blues for a while and believe it’s due to the growing list of events I have little control over — such as climate change deniers, Trumpism, voting fatigue, addictions, racism, homelessness and the ever-widening gap between the rich and poor. With Christmas approaching, I wanted to give you (and myself) some hope. It finally came to me in the wee hours. There is something I can do, although it might require a little help from you. In my last column, I gave Mayor George Harvie and our new council a wish-list of sorts. Part of that list included Paterson Park and affordable housing: “To have visioning workshops where the community can have real input into this unique parcel of available city-owned land.” Here’s my plan: to work with the City of Delta to do a visioning workshop or forum where interested citizens come together to learn and share their best ideas for the future of Paterson Park. I will donate my time and expertise to do a 20-minute opening presentation on innovations in housing, recreation and community planning. This would help to spark ideas and form breakaway interest groups. I’m thinking a Saturday morning in the early spring. If it is suc-

cessful this could be the first of a few forums. Remember, the last council said that Paterson Park was for a future council to determine. Alright then, welcome to the future, new council. In exchange for my donated time and expertise, I would ask the city to host this event by providing a venue, like the Ladner Community Centre, and a professional to facilitate the event. Some refreshments would also be nice. This would be an informative exchange, not only for our politicians but also an opportunity for Delta’s residents and business community to be heard. It could be the beginning of a plan for Paterson Park that addresses most of our needs and desires across all income levels. It could be a model mini-village that other cities will look to replicate. Design contests could go out

to planners and architects. This unique piece of land so close to amenities could be a world-class experiment in innovation. “We” just need to collaborate on what we want at that location so our elected leaders can move forward in a timely manner. I have written to the mayor and council formally requesting they approve hosting the above-noted forum in the spring of next year. This is where you come in. If this interests you, I hope you will support this plan by writing to the mayor and council or responding to this column, and participating in the forum when it happens. I’m already working on my presentation. OK, I’m feeling much better and I hope you are too. By the way, if you would like some company and a great Christmas Day dinner, Shirley Brown and her family are generously hosting it again this year, except at a more central location — All Saints Anglican Church, corner of 47A Avenue and Arthur Drive. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. It’s a free event with board games, entertainment and delicious food. Volunteers are welcome. ML Burke retired from the health sector to work on issues such as affordable housing. She sits on the Delta Seniors Planning Team and the B.C. Seniors Advocate’s Advisory Council.

Mom gave her kids the gift of live stage performances

Editor: What is a gift? That is a big question that has many answers. Recently I found myself watching an old kids Christmas show called ’Twas the Night Before Christmas. Very comical, quality animation show, with amazing voice work and a wonderful score. I was struck hard when I saw the name “Joel Grey” in the credits. It jarred a memory in me and I recalled thinking, “Hey, I saw Joel Grey in Cabaret at the QE Theatre when I was young.” This led me to remembering the others I have been fortunate enough to see. Anthony Quinn in Fiddler on the Roof and Debbie Reynolds in The Unsinkable Molly Brown.

I further remembered myself, my sister and our best friend, being all dressed up in our satin outfits, with our mothers taking us to see Swan Lake (obviously the late ’70s for those who don’t understand the satin phase). Flooding in after that came memories of the Nutcracker, Giselle and a whole host of other plays and musicals. We were not a family of means when all of this began — not even close. In thinking about it now, I can’t quite understand how our mom afforded it all. How, and why, was that so important to her? After I grew up and had kids of my own, our mother took all of her grandkids to the VSO children’s concert series for many years.

Following my mother’s passing eight years ago, we uncovered multiple pictures, scrapbooks and newspaper articles of her own forays into theatre and the arts. We had only known a little bit of this part of her life. But in seeing that name — Joel Grey — the other day, I came to truly think about and understand why my mother had such a passion for the arts and appreciated what it has brought to my life and the life of my children. Unlike my mother, I am not a performer. But I love beyond love live stage performances, so do her grandchildren, and that is because of her. That is a gift. Tracey McConnell

Mayor tarnished by handshake handling Editor: Re: Hand well played, Murphy’s Law, Dec. 13 Mayor George Harvie did not “emerge from this one looking pretty good.” I don’t, at all, begrudge elected municipal officials some form of retirement compensation as they leave their elected positions. As has been discussed extensively, however, the process that gave Delta the much maligned “handshake” policy was faulty — in the extreme. That said, the various recent municipal campaign positions that were expounded reeked of lack of insight and simple opportunism — when candidates (including the current mayor) were confronted with the negative public reaction to this issue. To now suggest that Harvie “emerged looking pretty good,” is disingenuous. I am not sure how sums discharged to departing councillors were

Smell might not be the compost

Editor: Re: Hand well played, Murphy’s Law, Dec 13 What a first lesson in civic politics for newly elected councillors — how to reward members of the last council with “end of service” payouts, even if they volunteered to run for election, won their seat and clearly have not ended their service. Of course, the payments are borne by the Delta taxpayer, the people the councillors serve. Also, within weeks of the election, the mayor appointed a running mate who was not elected to a patronage posting, again at taxpayer expense. With these lessons for the freshly elected members so early in their term, imagine what they will be capable of in four or more years on Delta council. I smell something in the air. Is it compost or civic politics? Ross Ens distributed, but none of the departing beneficiaries of this compensatory program were eligible to receive any monies until after the new mayor and council were sworn into their positions. Given the controversy swirling and the announced policy position of the new mayor, those payments that are described in your article as

“already collected” could have and should have been delayed, pending the review of this policy advertised throughout the campaign of the now new mayor. That approach to this matter would have allowed you to suggest that Harvie was looking “pretty good.” Currently he looks tarnished. Firth Bateman

Gov’t must put an end to collusion on gas prices

Editor: It’s time the provincial Santa Claus put an end to the collusion in gas prices. If there ever was an obvious example of collusion in retail gas prices, the latest round of $.17 per litre increase within 24 hours is proof that this industry needs government intervention. It’s rather obvious that when every gas station in the Lower Mainland

increases the product exactly the same price there’s an obvious collusion going on with this industry. Gas stations in the Lower Mainland are owned by many different oil companies so it seems rather strange that all of them increase the product the same price at the same time. Really? It’s time for the provincial government to

form an energy commission that will regulate gas prices and increase or decrease prices once or twice a month, not this daily misery that everyone has to put up with. Gasoline should be declared an essential item. It’s not a luxury item one buys because they really want to, it’s absolutely necessary to conduct our lives. Barrie McDonald

CHIEF NEIL DUBORD

Around this time last year, a time when it was dark early and the weather had turned, we dealt with a number of concerns related to pedestrian safety on 56th Street in Tsawwassen. We have seen some significant pedestrian collisions on that stretch of road — three of them fatal in the last four years. This fall, we have had two fatal pedestrian collisions in Delta — one on Scott Road and one on River Road. Both were during the dark hours and both were in rainy weather. As I sat down to write this article, I received notification that another pedestrian was struck in the dark, rainy morning hours on 104th Street in East Delta. Thankfully his injuries, while serious, are not life-threatening.

‘Boost and Bust’ project nabs suspected thief

A 40-year-old Vancouver woman has been charged with theft under $5,000 after a Delta police “Boost and Bust” operation last week. The department’s street crime unit conducted an enforcement project at Tsawwassen Mills and Tsawwassen Commons last Thursday. According to DPD, around 4 p.m. a loss prevention officer in a large department store observed

a woman take a wallet from the shopping cart of a customer. The information was communicated to police who were already on scene for the project. Police quickly arrived to observe the women exit the store and get into a vehicle. Officers pulled the vehicle over and arrested the alleged thief. The “Boost and Bust” projects are a joint venture between Delta

police officers, security at Tsawwassen Mills and Tsawwassen Commons, and individual loss prevention officers, according to DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. “They’re conducted regularly throughout the year to make sure our officers have excellent knowledge of the area, and they’re also a great way for us to build relationships with businesses,” Leykauf said. She said police work

Warning letter sent after pills laced with fentanyl IAN JACQUES

The Delta School District sent out a warning letter to parents last week after a student was found with fake Xanax pills laced with fentanyl. According to the school district, the pills were purchased illicitly as Xanax. The fake pills have since been confiscated by school officials. The district is not identifying which secondary school in Delta the pills were found. “This is extremely concerning information and as such, we felt it was essential to share this with our parent and extended community,” said district spokesperson Jen Hill. “The Delta School District is working closely with the Delta Police Department as they investigate. In the interim, we cannot stress enough the importance of talking to your child about the life-threatening risks associated with taking illegal drugs. “In addition, if you or your child notice any sus-

picious activity in your neighbourhood or at your school, please report it immediately to the Delta police or your school principal.” Last Thursday afternoon, a bulletin with more detailed information on Xanax was sent to all parents at the secondary school level. “We would like to encourage parents to have a conversation with their children about the dangers of taking any drug that is illegally purchased,” Hill added. “It should be assumed that all illicit drugs contain fentanyl, and therefore have the potential to be fatal.” During the past few weeks, school officials,

along with DPD and Fraser Health, have held a pair of parent information nights in North Delta on cannabis/THC edibles and vaping. More information nights are being planned for South Delta early in 2019. Hill said DPD school liaison officers have also visited every Grade 8 classroom in Delta and presented on the increasing dangers of fentanyl using presentations created by The Odd Squad (https://oddsquad.com/). “In conjunction with the message home to parents, district staff are working with DPD on a message that will be read directly to students by teachers in their classrooms before the holidays,” Hill said. “As well, in partnership with Fraser Health, each secondary school in Delta will receive a Nasal Narcan (Naloxone) kit in the next few days.” If you, or your child, has any information related to the trafficking of any illegal substances, you are asked to contact Delta police at 604-946-4411.

It’s that time of year already. The long-running Ladner Christmas Bird Count will be held this Saturday. Open to all experienced birders as well as those just looking for an enjoyable outdoor activity during the holiday season, the count also includes areas of Tsawwassen, south Richmond and Point Roberts. It’s part of the regional Christmas Bird Count, which is a component of a much larger count across the continent. Counts happen in over 2,000 spots throughout the Western Hemisphere. It’s the 119th

year for the counts, an ongoing project of the National Audubon Society in the United States and coordinated in Canada by Bird Studies Canada. Each Christmas Bird Count is conducted on a single day between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5. Counts are carried out within a 24-kilometre diameter circle that stays the same from year to year. The Ladner count, which dates back to the 1950s, has a few ways people can participate. One is by joining a small team of birders as it drives or walks around its area, counting all birds that team members spot. Drivers, recorders and spotters are all needed. Another way to partici-

pate is to stay home and count the birds that come to your feeders or in your yard. The number of species spotted in the Ladner count is always among the most in Canada. Ladner had the second most species spotted last year, behind only Victoria. Coordinator Jude Grass said they’re looking forward to good weather and lots of volunteers. The Dec. 22 count starts at 8 a.m. at various locations. The area leader will call volunteers with the information once they are assigned a team. Anyone interested in signing up for the count should contact Jude Grass at 604-219-2043 or judegrass@shaw.ca.

Chamber names Shearer as its new executive director

The Delta Chamber of Commerce announced Monday the appointment of Garry Shearer as executive director, effective immediately. Shearer and his wife Colleen have lived and raised a family in Tsawwassen since 1982 when they moved from Toronto to open a new sales territory for his company. His success building the business and establishing his company in Western Canada attracted several local start-up companies to recruit Shearer to lead their sales and marketing organizations. Two of the companies, Dees Communications and Hothaus Technologies, were started in Delta. Shearer was also recruited to lead a number of volunteer organizations, starting in 1992 with the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen. He has been the president of the Rotary Club, president of the Delta Hospice Society, president of Beach Grove

that would come to mind. Overwhelmed, overworked, overindulged, overextended, overtired or overdrawn; but not overjoyed. Family tensions, financial pressure, unreasonable expectations, weariness, the recent loss of a loved one, or illness or chronic pain can make it very difficult to feel joy at Christmas. True joy transcends how we feel or what happens to us. It is centered in the person and work of Jesus. The Magi’s joy was that they found Him. The arduous trip, the hot days and cold nights, the separation from loved ones, all faded when they saw the Baby King. They were overjoyed. He is still the key to our joy, all year long.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church

Finish this sentence: This Christmas I feel over_____. One of the most exotic elements of the Christmas story is the visit of the Magi. These Eastern dignitaries travelled hundreds of kilometres over a period of months, guided only by a star. They put their lives on hold, left their families, and subjected themselves to the hardships and rigours of a long trip in the ancient world. When they arrived, they worshiped Jesus, gave him gifts, then turned around and headed home. One statement in Matthew’s account of the Magi following the star to Jesus jumped out at me: “When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.”

BC and Alberta Guide Dogs volunteers Susie Ward and Bob Marshall are shown with South Delta United players Michael (8), Luke (8), Callin (7), Harris (4), Atanas (5) and Nash (4). The local soccer club will also be holding a food drive in mid-January.

The 2004 Delta Invaders girls fastpitch team stuffed stockings for the second year in a row to spread Christmas cheer to those less fortunate in the community.

Invaders fill stockings with gifts other 14-year-olds would love

For the second year in a row, the 2004 Delta Invaders girls fastpitch team stuffed stockings for girls their age who might be in need of a holiday boost. Each girl contributes personal money to the stockings and team funds help supply scarves, mit-

tens and other winter necessities. The Invaders stuff the stockings with everything from bath bombs and candles to perfume and chocolates — all the things 14-year-olds would love to receive at Christmas. “Our girls are very fortunate to play fastpitch and

they recognize that some youth their age aren’t as lucky,” said Invaders head coach Ed Selinger. “Last year this was their favourite team building event and I am so proud that they wanted to do it again — they really understand the true meaning of Christmas.”

Stockings filled in Stockings For Kids are distributed by Deltassist Family and Community Services.

The Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall had a “great response” to its Stockings For Kids program this year. “I had to get 60 more stockings, so instead of 250, we did 310,” says mall promotions manager Shannon Taylor. The 22nd annual program saw stockings get sponsored, filled with

gifts and returned to the mall for distribution by Deltassist Family and Community Services. “We appreciate the community so much for all of their generosity,” says Taylor. Deltassist runs an annual Toy Depot program where toys are provided to local low-income families.

The Wexford trades turkeys for donations to Deltassist

The Wexford’s inaugural Drive-thru Turkey Trade was a smashing success. Held in support of Deltassist Family and Community Services, the Dec. 8 event at the Tsawwassen seniors complex allowed people to

drop off an unwrapped toy or pair of PJs and in return receive a frozen turkey. Adding to the event was a visit from Santa Claus, carolers, refreshments and lots of Christmas spirit. The Wexford general manager Matt Jackson said

more than $13,000 in toys, PJs and cash was donated to Deltassist as a result of the three-hour event. “The community came out. Overall it was a great experience,” said Jackson. “The generosity of the community was huge.”

Annual campaign puts a little hope in every bag

Women Helping Women fills over 1,000 gift bags this year IAN JACQUES

Volunteers helped pack a little hope into gift bags to make the holidays a bit brighter for women in need. The ninth annual Women Helping Women South Delta campaign was a huge success this year as a record-breaking 1,047 gift bags were made and boxes of product were sent to facilities to use during the year. “It was amazing. We were able to fulfill all our requests,” said campaign organizer Pindi Mann. “We were very worried mid-November. Donations were down a bit, but I think people were hanging onto things. The Optimist support with your story really helped us out and we did a major social media blitz every day. In the last two days we had to make several collections at our donation stops, so it’s just been amazing.” Mann said some gift bags included PJs and self-care items like soap, shampoo, make up and feminine hygiene products, while others had more pampering items. They also created care kits people can take to the Downtown Eastside as well as 50 bags for Deltassist to give to families with teenagers. “Lush gave us 7,000 pieces of product, so every single bag will get a handful of Lush product,” she said. “We’ve had so many people sponsor an entire shelter.” On Monday, Dec. 3, more than 50 volunteers spent the whole day packing the bags at the Ladner Community Centre. “You never want to take on requests and not be able to fulfill them,” Mann said. She said a beautiful note from a previous recipient the group received on Facebook the day before putting the bags together spurred them on and reinforced the worth of the campaign. Mann said they provided gift bags to 30 facilities or programs throughout Greater Vancouver, includ-

ing Azure, Delta’s only transition house. Some of the recipients were in South Delta women who may have had a difficult year for a variety of reasons — while others were at shelters, recovery homes or receive services from outreach programs. “Each year the need grows,” Mann said. “The facilities have come to rely on us to help them during the Christmas season.” PHOTO BY IAN JACQUES

The Loades of Music Concert Band dropped by The Wexford seniors’ community in Tsawwassen recently for a Christmas concert. It was the band’s second festive concert this holiday season.

Two years ago the band has just nine members but today it boasts 35. Their love for music and a daytime availability, as most people in the band are retired, has allowed the group to flourish, playing at many places during

As I hung up the phone I heard such a chatter I went straight outside to see what was the matter.

Tack hammers and pliers were stacked on the shelf With hopes that some trimmer would buy for himself.

And what to my wondering eyes should appear But Rob Nelson himself and eight tiny reindeer!

The roll goods were lined up like little tin men As I walked by so slowly I turned down the bend.

“What service!” I exclaimed as he dropped off my order He had one more stop and asked “Which way to the border?”

I turned very slowly craning by head I saw what I wanted A vinyl in red!

Then he sprang to his sleigh to his team gave a whistle And away they all flew like a down of thistle.

I knew it was Christmas tops weren’t in style But springtime would be here in just a short while.

I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight...

I am always impressed

Swap Food for Fines at Delta libraries

Fraser Valley Regional Library’s popular Food for Fines campaign is back, giving library customers an opportunity to reduce their fines and help feed their community. From Dec. 14 to Jan. 22, library customers can “pay” fines with food by bringing in commercially packaged, unexpired, nonperishable food items to any FVRL location. One food item equals $2 in fines/fees, and up to $30 of fines/fees owed per library account can be cleared during the campaign. All items collected will be donated to the local area food bank. “FVRL’s top priorities include building meaningful community partnerships and reducing barriers for customers,” says Heather Scoular, director

of customer experience. “Now in its fifth year, the campaign is a great opportunity for customers to reduce or eliminate their fines while supporting their local community food banks in the process.” Last year FVRL customers donated 13,330 food items, and in turn the library system cleared

$34,660 worth of fines. Local pantries are especially in need of rice, flour, powdered baby formula, peanut butter and jams, pasta and sauces, canned fruit and vegetables, canned and dry soups, canned fish/meat and cereal. Food for Fines is offered at the Tsawwassen, Ladner Pioneer and George Mackie branches in Delta. For more information, visit www.fvrl.ca or your local branch.

It’s no fun doing the low-carb thing at the best of times. Right now, it’s downright brutal. Granted, there were celery sticks on the buffet table at my staff Christmas potluck a few days ago.

There were carrots. There was cauliflower. There were slices of cucumber. Whoop-de-doo. Most of my colleagues opted to contribute other, well, fancier things. Candy cane bonbons. Confetti ice-box cookies. Toffee merinque drops. Gingerbread people. Someone brought saffron rice. Someone else, garlic mashed potatoes. There were poppy seed egg noodles and there was cheddar chive corn bread. There were many other wonderful things — all of them on the no-go list. I’m trying to be good, but it’s tough. A couple of weeks ago, an old pal knocked on the door and presented him with a cookie tin full of goodies. Among them: four butter tarts. The husband has what you might call an affinity for butter tarts. And butter tarts have what you might call more than a handful

of carbs. We put the tin in the freezer, deciding the contents would stay there ‘til Christmas. When I returned from work the next day, the husband had a confession to make. “I did something bad today,” he informed me. “I ate the butter tarts.” “You ate a butter tart?” I asked. “No,” he said. “I ate four butter tarts.” Yep, the husband’s watching his weight, all right. As I say, it’s tough, and not much fun at all. I have no problem bypassing stuffing in July, primarily

But Christmas dinner without stuffing — and without mashed potatoes, marshmallow-topped yams and pumpkin pie and whipped cream — is what you call, well, turkey. because I don’t make stuffing in July. Just doesn’t go with ribs. But Christmas dinner without stuffing — and without mashed potatoes, marshmallow-topped yams and pumpkin pie and whipped cream — is what you call, well, turkey. To heck with it. I plan to eat the full-on feast,

and even drink a glass of eggnog. Should we come into more butter tarts, I’m going to scarf those down too, along with the shortbread, the cinnamon rolls, the fruit cake, the gingerbread and the thumbprint cookies. Carrots do not a Christmas make. I’ll get back to them in January.

Hobbies used to give back Ladner couple uses woodworking and crocheting to spread joy to others IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Theirs is a story of love, loss, family and the importance of giving back. Bill and Doris Lacey have lived in Ladner since 2000. They love the community and try to give back whenever they can. Bill’s story started through his dad’s hard work and love for the printed word. Bill has been a pressman all his life, working for several printing companies in the Lower Mainland through the years. “At the age of the 12 he gave me a claw hammer. He wasn’t just giving me that hammer — he was giving me his time,” Bill recalled, getting a bit choked up at the memory. “I didn’t immediately follow my dad into the wood trade, I went into the printing trade. “But I still have that hammer. I recently gave it to my grandson.” Through helping out his dad, Bill got into woodworking and started creating toys in his spare time. Over the years he has made wooden bush planes, train sets, fire trucks, tic-tac-toe games, stilts and canes, birdhouses, high chairs and wagons. During those years, Bill and Doris had two children: a daughter, Louise, and son, Maurice. Tragically, Maurice passed away from cancer

Bill Lacey has created wooden toys for decades while wife Doris continues to crochet items for those in need. in 1994 at the age of 26. Bill went back to his passion for the written word when he wrote two books to honour his son following his passing. “I named Buffy Toys to honour our son, Maurice William ‘Buffy’ Lacey,” said Bill. When the Optimist sat down with the Laceys, Bill opened up two photo albums full of memories and pictures of the toys and youngsters enjoying them. Some are his own

kids, others are friends’ children. There are also letters of thanks and appreciation for his toy donations over the years. One is from the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau thanking him for his 18 donations of five-car train sets. Another letter is from the Salvation Army. For Father’s Day, Bill helped his granddaughter Brittany and her kindergarten class make bird houses at her elementary

school here in Ladner. “With a wooden toy a child can use their imagination,” said Bill. Bill has stopped his projects now that he’s older, but he still loves chatting about what inspired him. Doris has also been inspired to give back. She has been a member of the Knitting Sisters for the past 15 years. “I do all my knitting from home. All of the knitting we do is for children

in need. I do blankets, toques and slippers,” she said. “I’ve been knitting for a long time. I wanted to join the group because they do things that are worthwhile. The couple say it’s the passion for family, friends and wanting to spread joy to others that kept them at their hobbies for so many years. “It’s just been a joy to give something back, something meaningful,” said Bill.

Nasty Habits bringing retro rock to Legion

What do Liverpool, the Beatles, The Rutles and Nasty Habits have in common? Well, John Lennon, of course. The port town of Steveston is home to the popular band Nasty Habits which plays the club/ pub circuit in the Lower Mainland. They are a Brit kicker band and proud of it. Nasty Habits will be making a two-night stop in Ladner with shows on Friday, Dec. 21 and Saturday, Dec. 22 from 8

p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at the Ladner Legion. Band leader Ron Cahill is from Liverpool and has that grit to his performance. The Nasty Habits tag came from the movie The Rutles, a Monty Python parody of the Beatles and all that befell them. Lennon’s character was the acerbic Ron Nasty, and Cahill’s penchant for getting songs right logically merged the names, and Nasty Habits was born. Cahill is only nasty when he’s on stage, however.

After a successful initial launch on Amazon, firsttime South Delta author Louise Cadrin is now set to offer her book in local stores — just in time for Christmas. The Starchild of Atarashara is now available at Black Bond Books in Ladner’s Trenant Park Square, The Reading Room in Tsawwassen and Natural Comfort and Wellness Centre in Tsawwassen. Her Nov. 15 launch on Amazon proved successful. On Amazon.ca she was rated No. 25 for all books in Canada, No. 1 in the “Movers and Shakers” category and No. 12 in “Hot New Release.” On the Amazon.australia site she was rated No. 6 in “Witches and Wizards Fantasy for Young Adults” and No. 23 for “Epic Fantasy for Young Adults.” In an earlier interview with the Optimist, Cadrin, who has lived in South

Delta for the past few years, says she was excited about launching her first novel. “I’m a real believer in magic and that it is all around us everywhere and when we open our senses to it we open ourselves to unlimited possibilities and that really is the premise of the book.

“It’s a great read for kids, but it’s really for anyone who is trying to figure out who they are, who are coming into their own sense of identity and finding the tribe that they really connect with,” says Cadrin. Learn more about the book at: www.thestarchildofatarashara.com.

Thormeyer Canada’s best of 2018 Former Winskill Dolphins standout earns national award after big season

After experiencing a frustrating 2017, Markus Thormeyer decided some changes were necessary in his life. After some thought, the 21-year-old from Tsawwassen realized balance was important to him. Achieving that balance led to performances that resulted in Swimming Canada selecting Thormeyer the Male Olympic Swimmer of the Year for 2018. “2017, straight up, was like a bad year,” said the former Winskill Dolphin standout. “I wasn’t enjoying swimming or a lot of aspects of my life. “Learning from 2017, for my swimming to get better I just can’t be a swimmer. I also have to devote time and energy into academics and my social life. It was a huge shift in my whole lifestyle. Coming into 2018 I decided I was going to work on that.” Thormeyer trains at the High Performance Centre – Vancouver with coach Tom Johnson, who receives the corresponding Coach of the Year award. The changes Thormeyer made proved beneficial in all aspects of his life, particularly his swimming. At the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, he earned his first medal at a major international competition, a bronze in the 100-m backstroke. He also was fifth in the 200-m back and swam personal best times in both races. Later in the year, at the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo, the South Delta Secondary graduate was sixth in the 100-m back plus was part of the 4×100-m and 4×200-m freestyle relays that finished fourth and fifth. For Thormeyer the award was a vindication. “It was pretty important because I felt like I proved to myself I was able to accomplish my goal,” said the University of British Columbia student. “I learned what I needed to do to make my swimming better. My swimming did get better. It was kind of cool to see me make a decision, follow through with it, and then achieve my set goal.” Johnson said winning the Commonwealth Games medal was an important step in Thormeyer’s progression. “For him to go to the

A more well-rounded approach to his life led to a big 2018 for Tsawwassen’s Markus Thormeyer, earning him Swim Canada’s Male Olympic Swimmer of the Year Award. Commonwealth Games and stand on the podium on his own merit is the kind of thing you want to see as a coach,” said Johnson. “I think that has launched him into a different orbit where his mindset is about winning medals individually.” Backstroke is Thormeyer’s premier event, but he also likes freestyle. At the 2018 Canadian Swimming Trials in Edmonton he won gold in the 200-m freestyle and silver in the 100-m. Swimming freestyle gives Thormeyer some variety in training. It also allows him to compete on Canada’s up-and-coming relay teams. “It’s another added layer of excitement,” he said. “Sometimes

you finish an individual race, you touch the wall, and it’s not the same when you touch in a relay. There are three other people there and you can high-five or hug it out. You get a different kind of pride. You’re proud of your teammates as well as yourself.” Next summer’s focus will be on the FINA World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea. A strong performance would be a stepping stone toward the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Johnson believes Thormeyer is capable of a podium performance in Gwangju. “The first thing he needs to do is make a final,” said Johnson. “If he gets that, then I think he could get to a medal. medals.” Thormeyer is realistic about his medal hopes. “It’s always a goal to medal,” he said. “If you asked me at the beginning of last year, I would have said not a chance. Ask me at the beginning of this year I say more of a chance. “There is definitely a lot of things I need to work on to get to that level. If I do everything I can, I don’t see why I shouldn’t be able to.” Thormeyer’s podium quest is being assisted by having a better understanding of what is important in life. “Good people and happy people make good athletes,” he said. “I need to be happy.”

Hawks rookie makes sure the bears fly MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Dillon Maher made sure the Delta Ice Hawks’ inaugural Teddy Bear Toss Night on Tuesday would be a special game in more ways than one. The 17-year-old rookie had the bears flying when he wired home a shot from the face-off circle eight minutes into the opening period. He would go on to record his first career hat trick in the Hawks’ 4-2 victory over the Aldergrove Kodiaks at the Ladner Leisure Centre. It took players, staff members and little helpers from the Ice Hawks Junior program about five minutes to collect 10 large plastic bags worth of stuffed animals that will be donated to Deltassist. The club also accepted food donations at the door for what turned out to be the largest crowd of the season. Maher then returned to work in the second period — banging home a rebound during a power play. He com-

Dillon Maher (92) even provided a helping hand in collecting the hundreds of stuffed animals after his first period goal brought them flying from the stands during the Delta Ice Hawks’ inaugural Teddy Bear Toss Night on Tuesday.

pleted his hat trick with another extra man tally in the final frame. The 6-foot-4 Richmond product entered the game with two goals in 29 games, which included a later equalizer in Saturday’s 4-3 overtime loss at Port Moody. He is taking full advantage of additional ice time with the flu bug impacting a number of players and even GM and head coach Steve Robinson. He watched Tuesday’s game from his Tsawwassen home. Mark Epshtein added an empty netter while Thomas Watts got the win in net. Watts was well enough to return between the pipes after missing

Saturday’s game. No. 1 stopper Jordy Engelson has been out for the last two games while captain and leading scorer Jordan Deyrmenjian is the latest to join the sickbed list. Fortunately for the Ice Hawks, Saturday’s game in Mission against the 8-21-0-3 Outlaws will be their final game before the Christmas break. After the game in Mission, the Ice Hawks return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 5 at the PJHL Winter Classic when they take on Aldergrove again at Minoru Arenas. The Hawks will also face Langley on Jan. 6 in Richmond as part of the league showcase event that will feature

12 games and every PJHL team in action over three days. Icing… A win in Mission Saturday would guarantee the Ice Hawks (20-6-2-3) enter the break second overall in the league standings. However, they are neck-and-neck with rival Richmond Sockeyes (19-7-2-1) who sit four points back with two games in hand. North Vancouver continues to set the pace at 26-6-0-0. Liam Visram had the other goal in last Saturday’s loss in Port Moody while Aidan Taylor made 34 saves in his first-ever start in the Delta net. He was one of five APs in the Ice Hawks’ line-up.

Schuss’ nine-points help Warriors to big comeback win in NLL debut

A big night from Logan Schuss helped the Vancouver Warriors make a memorable National Lacrosse League debut on Saturday night in Calgary. The Ladner standout had three goals and six assists as Vancouver stormed back for a 14-13 overtime win over the

Roughnecks in its regular season opener. The Warriors scored the final six goals of the game, erasing a 13-8 fourth quarter deficit to stun the home team and a crowd of nearly 11,000 at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Vancouver scored twice in the final

minute of regulation time, including Schuss’ hat trick goal with 50 seconds remaining. He then set-up James Rahne for the equalizer 28 seconds later. Both goals came with goalie Aaron Bold pulled for an extra attacker. Captain Matt Beers scored the game

winner at 4:17 of sudden death overtime. Mitch Jones, another hometown standout, chipped in with three assists. The same two Western Conference rivals will meet on Saturday at Rogers Arena in the Warriors’ home debut. Game time is 7 p.m.

A HEARTWARMING HOLIDAY MUSICAL FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Equestrian Canada awards Christoff for volunteer work

Delta’s Wendy Christoff is the November recipient of Equestrian Canada’s Dressage Volunteer of the Month Award. Christoff expertly holds many roles in the Canadian dressage community, including EC certified High Performance 1 Dressage Coach, President of Dressage BC, past EC Coaching Committee Chair, and accomplished FEI level athlete. She went above and beyond her usual duties by generously volunteering her time to ensure that the Dressage Levy Performance Advantage Symposium, held Nov. 17-18, at the High Point Equestrian Centre in Langley, went off without a hitch. When the EC Dressage Committee sought assistance finding a suitable venue for the symposium and arranging demonstration horses and riders, Christoff was the first person who came to mind. Over the two-day event, she ensured that each demonstration rider was comfortable and prepared for each session. Christoff successfully executed her symposium responsibilities while simultaneously managing the Dressage BC Annual General Meeting and Annual Awards Ceremony. The next day, she returned to present the Rising Stars Equitation Pilot with Susan Hotlby. Christoff has been a guiding light for Rising Stars, which has functioned as a premier competition for riders

HOLIDAY MUSICAL

Delta’s Wendy Christoff has earned Equestrian Canada’s Volunteer of the Month Award for her work at a recent event in Langley. under the age of 21 over the past 15 years. Moving forward, this program will integrate into all EC sanctioned competitions, evolving under Christoff’s watchful eye. EC is extremely grateful for the endless support that Christoff provided to the 2018 symposium, greatly contributing to the success of its west coast debut. Role models such as Christoff, who consistently commit their time and energy to dressage programs and events across the country, are the lifeblood of the sport in Canada.

A golden year in the pool for up-and-coming Ladner diver It’s been a year of steady progress in the deep end for Shemar Dennison The Ladner teen turned his rather quick diving introduction into a spot on the Vancouver Coastal Zone team that competed at the B.C. Winter Games in Kamloops back in February. He more than held his own, finishing seventh in the one metre springboard event and sixth in the three metre competition. Since then, the Grade 10 student at Vancouver College has been hard at work with the White Rock Divers Club — establishing himself among the best in the Lower Mainland.

Back in June, Dennison won gold on both the one and and three metre events at the White Rock Invitational, held at the club’s training pool — Grandview Aquatic Centre in South Surrey. He then headed to the Irene MacDonald Memorial Invitational at the Vancouver Aquatic Centre where it was another gold medal sweep. The Optimist carrier concluded his season in Langley earlier this month at the Candy Cane Invitational in Langley where he captured his fifth and sixth gold medals to wrap up a very productive 2018 campaign.

GUICHON, Alfred Paul May 19, 1933 - December 12, 2018 Born to Mary and Alfred Guichon on May 19, 1933, passed away on December 12, 2018. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, Paul was a native of Ladner, B.C., Canada who learned the value of faith, discipline and hard work while growing up on the family farm. His love of aerospace led him to Seattle, where he spent 40 years as a Boeing aerospace design engineer upon graduating from Seattle University. His true legacy, however, is his family and the thousands of hours he spent coaching youth sports teams, counseling at risk youth and volunteering at St. Louise Parish in Bellevue. He is survived by Sheila, his wife of 55 years, daughters Marysheila and Siobain (Jim), sons Kevin and Sean, grandchildren Colin, Eilis and Nicholas, siblings Therese Barry, Colleen Plain and Michael, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mass will be celebrated at St. Louise Catholic Church in Bellevue, Washington at 11:00 a.m. on December 27, 2018. In lieu of flowers, donations to Juvenile Diabetes Association and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
