The 5G Dilemma

We all knew that at some point the white-hot real estate market would slow, even decline. The latest data suggests the Metro Vancouver housing market will be mired in difficulties this year and perhaps even next. But there are clear strategies to not only survive the slump but benefit from it. Our expert panel will guide you on where the opportunities are, where they aren’t, and how your investment plan can make the most of the challenging times.

In the next year Canada will introduce 5G, the next generation of cellular mobile communications to vastly improve data usage, save energy, reduce costs, and enable businesses and consumers massive connectivity. But the country is embroiled in a debate on who should provide the technology, what national security considerations are necessary, and how Canada can ensure it does not lose pace with the rest of the world. Our panel discussion investigates the issues.

MP remains confident in PM

Qualtrough says testimony shows lines weren’t crossed in SNC-Lavalin affair IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Delta Liberal MP Carla Qualtrough says she remains confident in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the fall-out continues over the SNCLavalin scandal. Qualtrough spoke with the Optimist last Friday to provide her take on former attorney-general Jody Wilson-Raybould’s testimony to the House of Commons justice committee that she was pressured by Trudeau, his senior staff and others to halt a criminal prosecution of Montreal-based engineering giant SNC-Lavalin. “What we heard was there were conversations about SNC-Lavalin in the prime minister’s office and the former attorneygeneral’s office. No one is disputing that these conversations took place,” said Qualtrough. “She gave her fulsome version on how these conversations were received by her and her staff and the prime minister said

Delta MP Carla Qualtrough has expressed support for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. very clearly that he disagreed with her characterization of those events.” Qualtrough, the minister of public services and procurement and accessibility, said she was looking for a couple of things out of the testimony. “I was listening to hear if she was going to testify that she was directed to do something and she very clearly testified that she was not,” said Qualtrough. “The second thing which

is more of my lawyer hat on, of whether she was going to say that something illegal happened, or was there any kind of obstruction of justice and directly again she said no she didn’t think anything illegal happened, so those were the two lines for me. If those two lines had been crossed, then I would have had a different opinion on things, but I don’t feel they were.” Qualtrough said over

the past few years she has built strong relationships with both WilsonRaybould, a fellow B.C. MP, and Trudeau. “Jody and I have come to know each other quite well. In fact, we campaigned together as candidates in 2015, travelled back-and-forth, worked together closely on a number of files, both having the same kind of passions, but as I said I have built that same kind of relationship with the prime minister and for me I’m not prepared to say I believe one person over the other,” she said. “I have confidence and remain confident in the prime minister. It’s unfortunate that these things are happening and that they are playing out quite publicly. But these are really stressful, high pressure jobs.” As for what effect the SNC-Lavalin scandal might have once the federal election campaign begins later this year, Qualtrough said it’s too early to tell.

Portfolio grows for minister

Delta Liberal MP Carla Qualtrough now has an even greater role in cabinet. The minister of public services and procurement and accessibility can now add acting president of the Treasury Board and minister of digital government to her portfolio. That announcement Monday came after the sudden resignation of Jane Philpott from cabinet as the fallout from the SNC-Lavalin affair continues to grow. “I’m sad to hear of Jane Philpott’s departure from cabinet. She was a valued member of the team around the table,” said Qualtrough in a media statement. “I thank the prime minister for his faith in me as I take on the interim position of president of the Treasury Board and minister of digital government.”

Lawyer says defendant didn’t knowingly sell fentanyl IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Did Daniel Chesshire knowingly traffic in fentanyl? That was one of the questions defence attorney Garry MacDonald asked the jury to ponder during his opening statement in a South Delta fentanyl trial on Tuesday morning in New Westminster Supreme Court. Chesshire is facing one count of trafficking in fentanyl in connection to an incident in September 2016. He earlier pled guilty to one count of trafficking in cocaine. The court heard previously that in the early

hours of Sept. 1, 2016, within a 20-minute span, police received reports of overdoses from three locations in South Delta involving nine young adults, all of whom survived. MacDonald told the jury Chesshire stood up in court and stated loudly that he was guilty of trafficking in cocaine, but not guilty of trafficking in fentanyl. “He will testify that he thought that guilty plea covered all three transactions that night, but that turns out to not be the case,” MacDonald said. “He will tell you that he was providing cocaine to his friends that night.”

MacDonald said after two friends called, Chesshire reluctantly went into Vancouver to get the drugs. “The reason he did this was that he wanted to protect his friends from getting bad drugs or fentanyl; he thought that was what he was doing,” said MacDonald. During his testimony, Chesshire said in May of 2016 he met a supplier while attending a musical event with friends at a Vancouver club. Chesshire said he and his friends were concerned about obtaining safe drugs and thought the source to be reliable based on a sample one of his friends con-

sumed that night and the fact Chesshire used the source three or four more times throughout the summer. “Fentanyl was a scary thing and we thought it was ridiculous and how big it was becoming. I never wanted to see that happen to any of my friends,” he said. “My friends were reluctant to do drugs, but when they did, they wanted me to call the guy I met at the club because we had used his product before and believed it was safe. “I felt guilty (for the overdoses), but I never put fentanyl into the drugs that I provided. done something to my friends — friends who are like family.” Under cross-examination, Crown prosecutor Adrienne Switzer tried to poke holes in Chesshire’s testimony, calling into question his recollection of the evening’s activities and the encounters with his drug source. Switzer wondered why Chesshire and his friends would consider a random guy they met in a club as a safe source for drugs. Following closing arguments and instructions to the jury, jury deliberations were expected to begin today. • Check out www.deltaoptimist.com for updates.

Unlike the previous government, the New Democrats will consider sensible options for the George Massey Tunnel and the Highway 99 corridor. That’s what Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon told the Delta Chamber of Commerce last Friday during a presentation on the recent provincial budget and other initiatives. The first-term NDP MLA said there’s no doubting the tunnel “is the white elephant in the room” and acknowledged the congestion is frustrating, adding the province is committed to working in a collaborative way toward a solution. “Unlike the previous government, we’re assessing options for the region, making sure communities’ voices are heard and everyone is part of the decision. A new business case is expected to be developed by 2020,” he said. “We know that people are eager for relief, that’s why at the same time we’re making safety and reliability upgrades on the Highway 99 corridor on both sides of the river. This work involves new (tunnel) lighting, drainage, pavement lines, markings, fire doors and alarms, ventilation, pumping and electricity.”

Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon addresses the Delta Chamber of Commerce last Friday in Tsawwassen. The Green-backed provincial NDP government late last year confirmed a 10-lane bridge, the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project initiated by the previous Liberal government, was dead. Options to be explored include a smaller bridge, another tunnel as well as keeping the current crossing as part of a solution. The province also announced $40 million in interim upgrades to the tunnel and road system. Kahlon said he’s pleased Delta Mayor George Harvie and several of his counterparts got together and formed a working group on the issue. In an interview with the Optimist, Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson echoed ongoing frustration conveyed by Delta South MLA Ian Paton, saying the Massey Tunnel project has disappeared from the bud-

get entirely. He said the government appears willing to take a long time to address the worst bottleneck in Western Canada. “Their answer is they’re going to put in new lights and they’re going to paint it,” said Wilkinson. “We are very frustrated on behalf of all those motorists south of the Fraser who spend way too much of their life sitting in the lineup getting into the tunnel both north and southbound. This government is playing games with the people of Delta.” Wilkinson noted the government is clearly using politics as the deciding factor, cancelling a major project that connects two ridings held by the Liberals in favour of a project, the Pattullo Bridge, that connects two NDP-held ridings. “That is the cheapest form of tacky politics,” he said.

Four Winds has big plans for Southlands

Neighbours voicing concerns over industrial nature of proposal ahead of next week’s public hearing SANDOR GYARMATI

It’s not an appropriate location. That’s what some concerned Tsawwassen residents plan to say at a public hearing next Tuesday on a proposal by Four Winds Brewing to add a craft brewery and 200-seat restaurant, as well as a craft distillery and winery, to the commercial component of the Southlands development. Residents plan to question whether the type of development being proposed now was envisioned when Delta council gave approval for the Century Group to build 950 housing units and 80,000 square feet of commercial space on the property. The current proposal would see the craft brewery and restaurant housed in a 30,000-square-foot building that would be up to 51 feet in height. It would contain the brewing and bottling components of the operation, while the warehousing and distribution would be handled at an industrial location

Four Winds Brewing’s application would see a craft brewery and 200-seat restaurant housed in a 30,000-square-foot building on the Southlands. elsewhere. The distillery and winery would be in buildings of no more than 6,000 square feet. According to the city’s planning department, the proposed uses are consistent with the original vision for the Southlands. However, saying industrial operations were never part of that plan, nearby

resident Pat Greig has several concerns, including the proximity of the proposed buildings to existing homes. She said it’s an important policy question of siting industry outside industrial zones. “It is about building size near residences. It is about who should bear the burden of long known development retail market

is an incremental strategy and this is the first rezoning application. I don’t think this is the last we’ll see by any means. I don’t think they can deliver what they promised and I’ll think we’ll see more of it… no one said the Southlands Village will be comprised 25 per cent or more industrial space,” he told the Optimist this

week. According to the Century Group, which is developing the Southlands, a major factor that influenced Four Winds’ decision to locate was the ability to have a restaurant and brewing facility right beside a farm, giving Four Winds the opportunity to grow its own hops, grain and other ingredients. The restaurant will also focus on using ingredients sourced from the farm and local to the region, the company claims. “Growing up in Tsawwassen, I could have never imagined the kind of community that Century Group has planned for Southlands,” said Adam Mills, sales and marketing director and co-founder of Four Winds Brewing Company, in a press release last summer. The company also had letters of support submitted to the city, including an endorsement from Deltassist Family and Community Services. Next Tuesday’s public hearing takes place at city hall at 7 p.m.

Public hearing on Terminal 2 set for spring

A public hearing will take place in Delta this spring so residents can have their say about the Terminal 2 container terminal proposed for Roberts Bank. It’s been confirmed through the environmental review panel that the hearing will begin at a location in Delta on May 14. A hearing schedule with the timing and locations of all sessions will be made public once confirmed. The hearing will be open to the public to observe in person or via a live webcast or audiocast. The panel notes that if a member of the public has an interest in the project, they may participate at the hearing by filing a written submission or making an oral statement. Anyone who wishes to participate at the hearing must register as a participant by March 22. Detailed information on how to request to participate and what should be included in a request is available https://ceaa-acee.gc.ca.

Ladner parent wants her three-year-old son fully vaccinated for measles IAN JACQUES

A Ladner mom says she’s frustrated with Fraser Health’s policy around early measles vaccination. Kirsten Laufer has a six-year-old son Benjamin who is fully up to date on his vaccinations while her three-year-old son Josh has had his first MMR, but Laufer wants to get his second vaccination early. “Josh who had his first MMR is currently in the ‘under vaccinated’ state until he can get his next round of immunizations,” she told the Optimist. “Although the Drug Monograph allows three-year-olds to get the MMR, Fraser Health has not changed their policy to allow a three-year-old to get it.” She said she is in the process of working with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as it will allow a three-year-old to get the MMR on request. “I don’t understand why Fraser Health isn’t following suit with VCH,” Laufer said. “It shouldn’t be this hard to get a MMR when

I have spoken to other moms who spoke to their GP and they have not had a problem, but my GP does not do immunizations after three years old, so I have to turn to my health authority. Josh is four in

November. I understand that he is 95 per cent effective with the first one, but I would still prefer the higher immunity. I work with newborns and I want to ensure that he is safe, and other children are safe.” She feels that with the

recent outbreak of measles, Fraser Health is ill prepared. “When you have families who are saying, look, I have a three-year-old and understand that he is 95 per cent covered, but I would prefer to boost it

up to the full immunity and Fraser Health has a policy that won’t let me do this, something is just not right,” she said. Fraser Health spokesperson Tasleem Juma said all health authorities in B.C., including Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health, follow the provincial vaccination schedule that indicates children are routinely provided with two doses of a measles-containing vaccine with the first dose (MMR) given at 12 months and the second dose (MMRV) given at four to six years of age. “There is agreement between all health authorities that there is no need to provide early vaccination of children aged six to 12 months. Nor does the second MMR dose, targeted for children four to six years, need to be given early,” Juma said in an emailed response to the Optimist. “I can’t speak to why someone in Vancouver Coastal Health’s region would provide the vaccine outside the provincial guidelines.”

• Feb. 24, 2 a.m., 5200block of Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant called police to report a group of intoxicated males wearing cowboy hats causing a ruckus in the parking lot of Trenant Park Square. Police attended the area and found there to be no damage. Police later located what appeared to be either a rogue country

The male also stated they had felt the cowboy hats added a nice touch to the evening. Noting the woman of First Nations descent was vulnerable, and will likely continue to require support and assistance, Warren said the FHA had justifiable reason to legally detain the woman under the Adult Guardianship Act, but the health authority didn’t apply for a court

order and never gave her reasons for her detainment in writing. Even though she asked for one, she was told she couldn’t speak to a lawyer during her detainment at Delta Hospital, where she was sometimes restrained to her bed. She had escaped on several occasions, only to be returned by police who told staff they couldn’t detain her unless they applied for a certificate of involuntary admission under the Mental Health Act. Fraser Health has not issued a comment on the ruling.

Say hello to Kona

This lovely gal’s name is Kona and she is a two year old female Presa Canario. It’s not polite to discuss a lady’s weight, but it’s “rumored” that she weighs 105 lbs. Despite her size and breed type, Ms K is higher energy and she would do well in an active home that likes to get outdoors and do stuff! She is crate trained, house broken and good on leash. She seems fine when left alone and does not have any destructive tendencies. Kona gets along well with big and small dogs, but she does like to be the boss. She’s a tad bit greedy and is not a fan of sharing food or treats, so if she went into a household with other dog buddies, that would need to be monitored. Kona is good with people, even small children, and her current home says she adjusts well to new situations. As with all our dogs, she is spayed and up to date on all shots and vaccines. The charter rights of a woman detained at Delta Hospital and other facilities for almost a year had been “egregiously and repeatedly violated” by the Fraser Health Authority, a B.C. Supreme Court judge has ruled. In a decision released last week, Justice Lisa Warren determined the detaining of the woman, identified in court documents as A.H., against her will during 2016 and 2017 was unacceptable. “Notwithstanding these

clear expressions of a desire for legal help, A.H. was not given the opportunity to actually speak to a lawyer until July 12, 2017,” Warren noted in her reasons for judgement. “Again, A.H. was involuntarily detained for more than nine months before she had the opportunity to speak with a lawyer regarding her detention. She was not informed of her right to counsel without delay, she was given no reasonable opportunity or assistance to exercise that right, her ability to access counsel was actively interfered with, and her

hen the rumour mill started buzzing about Four Winds possibly opening a brew pub as part of the Southlands development in Tsawwassen, it sounded like a neat idea. Four Winds is undoubtedly a local success story -- a good Delta family with a long history here that’s now brewing award-winning beers -- so having a nearby venue to enjoy these homegrown products seemed like a no-brainer. It still does, but the proposal that will the subject of a public hearing next Tuesday is more than just a brew pub. Much more, in fact. The application includes a craft brewery with 200-seat restaurant, craft distillery and winery. The brewery and restaurant building would be 30,000 square feet while the other two buildings could each be as big as 6,000 square feet, meaning slightly more than half of the Southlands’ commercial district would be occupied by these operations, which are all industrial in nature, save for the restaurant. A civic staff report states: “The proposed craft brewery and restaurant at 6360 Market Avenue is proposed to be a new, long term location for the Four Winds Brewing Company which currently operates at an industrial location in Tilbury.” If I’m reading that correctly, that means an industrial operation is moving into the middle of a residential neighbourhood. That same staff report suggests the new uses fit the vision for the Southlands. I agree with that in the sense that all of them could use products grown on the adjacent farmland, but I thought the whole idea for the commercial component was to house shops and services that would supply everyday needs for those within walking distance. You know, things like a bakery or a produce stand. I guess there would be almost 40,000 square feet left to accommodate such uses, and perhaps expecting all 80,000 square feet to be filled one shop at a time was too optimistic, but it’s hard not to view more than half of a market square being occupied by booze producers as an odd fit. From a glass half-full standpoint, it could possibly create a commercialmeets-industrial kind of feel that works well on Granville Island, but it’s certainly not what was envisioned for the Southlands.

Frozen soil meets warm hearts as Project Pickle gets growing

H

acking away at frozen soil is not a usual occurrence when I make my rounds with my young farming buddies in Project Pickle, but that’s what we’ve been doing of late. I stress to the kids that part of farming is taking risk and we are certainly doing that right now. They just want to be outside regardless, and so do I, so it’s all good. The radish and peas that we are planting right now might not take but that’s OK, we will try again if that happens. I always bring a big bowl of what we are planting so the children can taste what we plant prior to the seeds going into the ground. They also get to enjoy that taste — a better one — after the crop is ready to harvest. I have noted this before but it is worth noting again that there are children in Delta who are hungry. It is not widespread but it is a reality. When I see kids that are insatiable when a bowl of radish is presented to them, you know something is up. I try my best to spark the desire to grow your own with Project Pickle and I hope the children will encourage their parents and families to put that little raised

bed in the backyard or planter box on the patio to grow their own vegetables, so they can treat themselves to the growing experience and the unmistakable pleasure of eating something they have nurtured. Growing your own food is a rewarding experience and it is not a lot of work. When I see hungry kids in our midst it makes me sad yet inspired at the same time. I know who they are and I make best efforts to talk to them on my visits just to check and see if they are OK. I have a special bond with these kids and I must admit that I give them priority “Farmer Mike” consideration in the group dynamic. If given the opportunity, these are the kids that would eat the whole bowl of my offerings.

On Tuesday we were planting some snap peas a little early just to see what happens. Everyone got to grab a fist full to snack on but one of my Grade 3 buddies put his in his coat pocket to bring home for his mom and little sister. Wow! That is a reality that we do not often collectively see. I see it every day unfortunately. Canada recently released its new food guide and it is definitely worth the time to check out. You can see it at www.food-guide. canada.ca. It follows the “half your plate” mantra and asks for that plate to be half full of fruit and vegetables and a quarter each of proteins and whole grains. Parents and families lead busy lives and accomplishing these plate expectations can be daunting in terms of preparation time and certainly in terms of cost. We are very fortunate to live where we do, but there are challenges facing many families in Delta. It may not be obvious but if you notice a child in our midst that may have need, reach out if you can. Ask them if they are OK and help out if you can. Delta asked to reduce fees for seniors at recreation centres

Editor: At the Delta council meeting of Feb. 11, a letter was presented to council concerning the difference between the recreation fees charged by Surrey and Delta to those of us who are over 70. In Surrey, residents who are over 70 pay a drop in charge of $1.75, a monthly charge of $18 and a yearly charge of $131, while here in Delta we pay a drop in of $5.75, a monthly rate of $47.99 and a yearly amount of $473. At the council meeting our mayor and council received the letter and it was forwarded to the parks, recreation and culture commission for dis-

cussion at its next meeting, which the mayor said was in May. The new Surrey council, which was sworn in on Nov. 5, changed the fees on Dec. 18 and offered a pro-rated refund to those who had already purchased a pass. Our new council, sworn in one day later, obviously does not feel this is of any importance as we are being asked to wait well into the summer to perhaps see any changes made. Maybe our mayor and council should take note that encouraging seniors to be active and engaged is important not only to the quality of life of older

adults but also helps to promote a healthy lifestyle that reduces cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, obesity, falls and osteoporosis as well as cognitive impairments leading to an overall reduction in health costs. By reducing these fees it would make it easier for those on a fixed income to enjoy and benefit from the use of our exceptional recreational facilities and the programs they offer. I request on behalf of all of my contemporaries that our mayor and council look at these fees and act quickly to reduce them to meet those of our neighbour. Dudley Turner

Tell council brewery not appropriate for Southlands

Editor: The most contentious land use issue in Delta’s history is back. The developer, Century Group, is asking for major changes through a back door variance application. The variance has received preliminary approval and there is an important public hearing next Tuesday evening. Century, on behalf of

Four Winds Brewing, is asking to move parts of the Four Winds brewery from Tilbury to the Southlands. Breweries, with or without restaurants, are currently permissible in areas zoned industrial. The Southlands site is zoned residential with a mixed use commercial/residential zone, not industrial. Century is also asking for a variance on height

and the maximum size of any one building. This proposal is significantly different than the originally approved application. I think the citizens of Delta, and particularly Tsawwassen, need to let Delta council know they object, either at the public hearing or by writing or phoning their council representatives. Dead ducks are latest example of habitat destruction

Editor: Re: 31 dead ducks discovered in Tsatsu pond, Feb. 28 It is astonishing that someone has used toxic chemicals somewhere above the pond at Tsatsu Shores that leaked into the water. Not only has this killed the ducks but it has the

potential to kill bald eagles that could have eaten a dead duck, herons and small birds that surrounded that pond. I hope this will be investigated to find the source and people responsible. Tsawwassen is losing acres of bird habit as it is with a warehouses park, malls, housing and the

constant cutting down of trees for all these projects. In my seven years living in what I felt was rich with birds and nature I have seen nothing but destruction of habitats. It’s heartbreaking and makes me want to leave a place I loved because it will only get worse. Katz Hansen

Public inquiry needed into casino money laundering

Editor: Every citizen of this province should be outraged at what we are learning about money laundering and B.C. casinos. How any casino could allow people to come in with duffle bags and suitcases full of $20 and

$50 bills is beyond belief. To believe that casino personnel and government officials saw nothing wrong or unusual about this is simply unbelievable. I do not understand why this NDP government is reluctant to call an independent public inquiry into this matter. It is obvi-

ous that former government politicians, officials and casino personnel are as dirty as baby diapers in this matter. A full public inquiry is required to find out who is responsible and people should be going to jail over this. Richard J. Bergeron

Don’t allow fear to control decisions involving casino

Editor: Re: Casino opponents silent on possible TFN option, letter to the editor, Feb. 28 To say we should build something we don’t want because we fear someone else might build it would be like saying, “We should kill ourselves quickly now,

because we fear our inevitable death might be slow and painful.” If we allow fear to control our actions, we will never make the best decisions. We should not be doing things because we are afraid. Let’s not get into creating FUD (fear, uncertainty

and doubt) and instead have some rational discussions about what makes the casino proposal a good thing for Delta or a bad thing and work with that. We can deal with the subject of building a casino on TFN land if it presents itself. Paul Biedermann

Civic staff will be collecting traffic data on Arthur Drive to look at whether traffic calming measures should be put in place after a letter of concern was sent to Delta council. Resident Sharon Kraemer wrote to council last week expressing concerns over speeding vehicles. She said ongoing development in Ladner, Tsawwassen and the Tsawwassen First Nation continues to impact the quality of life for residents along the roadway. “Vehicle traffic using Arthur Drive has significantly increased in the past several years,” she wrote. “The speed of vehicles has increased. It now appears that Arthur Drive is being used as a freeway due to the increase in traffic volumes and speed.”

A resident wrote Delta council saying traffic on Arthur Drive has increased significantly in the past several years. Delta will collect traffic data before deciding on whether to implement traffic calming measures. Kraemer also stated the increase in traffic has created excessive noise and said calming measures need to be considered. “As we no longer have street parking, which does reduce speed, or sidewalks on the east side of

Arthur Drive between 44th Avenue and the Kirkland House, appropriate calming measures should be instituted,” she added. “Raised median islands could be put in on Arthur Drive between Whitworth Crescent and Sacred Heart

School.” According to Delta, Arthur Drive is classified as an arterial road where higher traffic volumes can be expected. Staff will report back to council once traffic data has been collected.

Lighting up town core to improve ambience and pedestrian safety

Although the bright twinkling lights of Christmas are in the rear view mirror, the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association (TBIA) is interested in spreading the light year round. For the past 23 years, the TBIA has carried on the seasonal tradition of hanging more than 50,000 LED lights around Tsawwassen’s busiest areas. The initiative represents over 14 per cent of the annual operating budget of the TBIA. Not only does it enhance the visual appeal of the town, it contributes to pedestrian safety by making roads and sidewalks more visible in the darkness. TBIA executive director Lydia Elder says the organization’s board of directors has long been discussing ways to support the work of the City of Delta and the Delta Police Department in enhancing pedestrian safety through environmental design. “We want to encourage people to get out of their vehicles and spend time walking around Tsawwassen,” says Elder. “And we want them to feel

For the past two years, the TBIA has been testing the effectiveness of installing white lights, first with two trees in 2017, and this year on nine trees. Feedback has been positive, both from residents and police. “Delta police have worked hard over the past few years to reduce

safe and comfortable while they’re outside, whether they’re walking, cycling, using scooters, strollers or wheelchairs.” The TBIA is proposing the installation of bright, warm white LED lights in the town’s commercial core to increase pedestrian safety and encourage foot traffic in the hours after the sun has gone to bed. Elder says she approached Const. Leisa Schaefer at the Tsawwassen Community Police Station to collaborate on the project. “Leisa and I started

Delta looks to be more inclusive to LGBTQ community SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It’s all about welcoming diverse communities. Delta council on Monday endorsed a staff recommendation to have the new community livability advisory committee consider options and recommendations on how the city can more proactively support diversity and inclusion, including those who are LGBTQ. Staff is to develop a strategy in consultation with local businesses and community groups and report back to council. Sher Vancouver, a nonprofit group founded in

North Delta supporting LGBTQ South Asians and their friends and families, recently wrote to council offering several suggestions on supporting diversity and inclusion. The ideas included rainbow crosswalks, benches in public parks, pride flag banners on street lights and the city working on a strategic plan to support LGBTQ people in Delta. “Most importantly, young LGBTQ people coming out would feel they have an official ally in their local government, including the mayor and council, and that discrimination of any kind towards LGBTQ people will not

be tolerated at any and all official levels,” Sher Vancouver founder Alex Sangha wrote. A civic report notes that 43 B.C. communities have installed rainbow crosswalks. The estimated cost to install a 12-metre crosswalk is $6,500. “Outwardly visible symbols of diversity and inclusiveness must be supported with a sustainable commitment to changing behaviour, understanding and acceptance. This can be done through policies and actions that reinforce messaging around diversity and inclusiveness,” the report states. “Currently, Delta’s

Social Profile indicates a need for more communication with the LGBTQ community to bring Delta in line with other cities.” Noting there are relatively few LGBTQ events in Delta, the report adds last summer saw a grassroots movement that resulted in the first Pride Picnic at Memorial Park in Ladner. “The picnic celebrated both the differences and the commonalities of Delta residents. This momentum provides Delta with an opportunity to engage with LGBTQ citizens, businesses and other residents on what a city contribution may look like,” the report states.

These aren’t your

PARENTS’ DRUGS

Substance use in schools is nothing new, but what they’re taking certainly is.

Ian Jacques

Police Chief Neil Dubord says accepting that there are drugs in Delta schools is tough, but it’s necessary in order to understand the risks.

D

rug use among youth is nothing new, but what is new are the types of drugs that are becoming more and more prevalent. It’s no longer sneaking off to the back school parking lot for a drink or to smoke a joint, it’s vaping pens, illegal marijuana edibles and fake pills tainted with fentanyl. The Delta School District, Delta Police Department, Fraser Health and others are working collectively to combat the growing problem and say that education –

for everyone from students to parents to community members – is key. “Throughout 2018, Delta police officers, Delta firefighters and paramedics continued to respond to numerous overdoses, and the issue is prevalent enough in younger populations that we felt it was necessary to work with the Delta School District and

send a warning home to parents,” said DPD Chief Neil Dubord in a recent Optimist column. “Accepting that there are drugs in our schools is tough, but it helps all service providers understand the risks that our students face. Our school liaison officers and other police officers are delivering a daily message about drug consumption and the associated dangers.”

On the front line Const. Mike Atkinson is one of six Delta police school liaison officers that work with all Delta schools. “We will come into elementary schools and talk to the students about choices around drugs and alcohol. Moving into high school this year, we did a presentation to all Grade 8 classes around the risks of fentanyl and the opioid epidemic and then with other presentations we meet and talk with parents so everyone is getting a consistent message.” Atkinson said vaping and edibles are becoming more frequent amongst youth. “There is a definite increase in students from 12 to 18 that are utilizing vapes,” he said. “I think a lot of it is misinformation. Kids think it is less of a health risk than smoking, but they are not sure what the actual risks are.” Atkinson said it all comes down to choices. “We want youth to make an informed choice and there is a lot of conflicting information that is around from companies that are making money off these products and they will present information in a certain manner because they want to sell products,” he said. “For us, we’re taking a different approach. We are not just saying no, we are trying to provide accurate information whether it is from a health professional or a legal outlook as far as the potential consequences. So

“When I started doing my research, the biggest danger of consuming an edible orally is that it takes a lot longer for it to go through the digestive system.” – Const. Derek Gallamore having a message to students is important. Having a message to parents is important and sharing the message through media like you to the broad community is an effective three-pronged approach.”

Educating parents Const. Derek Gallamore was shocked when officers busted a woman allegedly selling weed-laced brownies with 40 times the recommended single dose of THC. The sugary treat looked identical to a regular grocery store confection, but packed a punch with more than 400 milligrams of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. Though cannabis was legalized last October, edibles

will not be legal until sometime this year, but that’s of little concern to entrepreneurs who are cooking up pot-infused candies, cookies and energy drinks that could see youth unknowingly ingest harmful substances. “When I started doing my research, the biggest danger of consuming an edible orally is that it takes a lot longer for it to go through the digestive system,” said Gallamore. “It could take anywhere to two hours to feel the effects of it, so the problem with kids when they smoke marijuana or they vape, they get an instant high and with the edibles they don’t feel anything right away, so they are consuming more and that’s where the risk of almost coming to a poisoning.” These factors prompted Gallamore to reach out to the Delta School District to host a series of parent information nights, the latest being at Delta Secondary in Ladner last Wednesday evening. During that presentation, which also included representatives from Fraser Health, Gallamore showed slides of a number of common products – brownies, Rice Krispie treats,

nated? You just don’t know. The main focus was to let you know that these are being produced and that your kids could get access to them and if you do buy them yourself, keep them secure and make sure your kids don’t have access to them.”

Vaping on the rise Gallamore said vaping continues to be a growing trend in local schools. “The schools are seeing a huge increase,” he said. “I think it is almost comparable to the ’50s and ’60s with smoking. Kids now see it as a trendy, cool thing to do. It is glamourized in the media. It is seen as a safer alternative to smoking, which I don’t think we know yet. In 20 years from now, in my opinion, you will see the outcome of it like we did with cigarettes, so that’s what the difference is going to be.” He said he doesn’t think kids and parents truly know the consequences of vaping, and with vaping pens getting increasingly discreet, it’s getting more and more challenging to see who’s using what. “My concern is when organized crime takes a look at the vaping vestibule to kids – you look at fentanyl, heroin and cocaine – as soon as they figure out how to vape it, think about how many billions of dollars are going to be into that,” he said. “Science is helping this. It’s becoming very discreet. That’s the message, these are the concerns, this is what is out there. My daughter sees it in the schools and she’s in Grade 8. It’s scary.”

Education is the key Superintendent Brad Bauman said the Delta School District continues to work with the police department to educate staff, students and parents on making smart, responsible decisions and on the dangers these drugs possess. “It’s across the board. It’s not new that we are dealing with substance use issues in schools, but what is changing for us and why this is important to begin to talk about this in different ways,” said Bauman. “Our concerns are the products they are consuming are not safe and they are in different forms than they used to be and they are unaware of what they are taking. “We are not hear to fear monger, we are here to provide good information so you can have these discussions with your children. We want to teach our kids and educate them about healthy choices and if they are making choices that could put them at risk, we want to educate parents, teachers and counsellors.”

Const. Mike Atkinson, one of six Delta police school liaison officers, says there’s a definite increase in vaping among teenagers.

Last Sunday as we celebrated communion my thoughts were brought back to Jesus’ statement: “As often as you do this, remember me.” While these words recorded in scripture were specific to the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples, I see a practical application to each of the repeated annual observances through the Christian calendar year. We are just coming to the end of the Season of Epiphany (the revealing of God’s Glory in Jesus, the Light of the world) and now enter the Season of Lent. Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent starts, comes from the old Middle English word “Shriven”

from the English custom of using up all the fattening ingredients before Lent, so that people were ready to fast during Lent. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. It is also the first spiritual tradition. We are marked with ashes on the forehead in the shape of the cross reminding us of the one to whom our full allegiance is given. The ashes also remind us of humility and are a visual reminder of the vast difference between creatures and their creator, and symbolize the need for repentance and a change of heart. All these observances cause us to remember Jesus in our everyday life. Have a blessed Lenten journey.

Shrek is coming to Genesis

Studio West Dance partners with Delta Secondary for weekend production IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Studio West Dance is getting set to bring Shrek The Musical Jr. to life this weekend at Ladner’s Genesis Theatre. Directed and choreographed by Jyla Davis and Nicol Spinola, the production has 40 in the cast ranging in age from seven to 18. Music is under the direction of Chris Davis with set design by Kathy Morrison and her stage craft class at Delta Secondary. “We chose this production because it has a great message for kids: acceptance of everyone know matter what they look like,” said Davis. “It’s funny. Everyone knows Shrek, so to see it live on stage we thought it would be a fun show for people to see. It takes a village to do this kind of stuff. With set, lighting, sound, vocal and dancing rehearsals and then getting the audience to come out and support.” Spinola said preparations began a year ago with auditions throughout the summer and rehearsals starting in September. This is the fourth year

Studio West Dance presents Shrek The Musical Jr. at Ladner’s Genesis Theatre this weekend. that Morrison and her students have created the set for Studio West Dance productions. “The great thing about her is that she approaches things in such a professional manner, so the kids are really getting a good look at what it would be like to work in a professional environment with set building,” said Spinola.

“It’s good for our students as well to see the detail and the depth of what she goes into creating our musicals.” The excitement is building among the cast and crew as opening day nears. “This is the time where everything comes together. Now we see everything — the sets and the costumes,” said Spinola.

“I think what is fun for us as teachers is to see the excitement that it brings the kids. Rehearsals can be tedious at times and the students can’t really see the end goal, and now we are entering that phase where they get to see that end goal and that’s what really excites them, so for us we get to enjoy all the work they have been

doing. I think it’s a great show and I’m excited for it to open.” Daytime shows will be held today and Friday for elementary school students with full public performances tomorrow at 7 p.m. as well as Saturday at 1 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available online at studiowestdance.ca. Seating is limited.

Tsawwassen’s Tom Pickett is excited to play his first feature role in a children’s play. The long-time actor is starring in the Carousel Theatre for Young People production of Elephant and Piggie’s We Are in a Play!, a new musical about two best friends and their many adventures. The charming story is based on the best-selling book series by award-winning author Mo Willems. Filled with beloved characters and lively songs, it’s suitable for audiences ages three and up. The production marks a return to the company for Pickett who starred in It’s a Wonderful Life: A Musical in 2002. “I was driving home one day and thinking about

the other actors who work around here and that I hadn’t been back at the Carousel Theatre in a long, long time. Two days later they called and offered me an audition,” he said. “The material and the music is amazing. The audition was just so much fun. I auditioned with Kelli Ogmundson and we just hit it off, we had such great chemistry. Those auditions are rare. Auditions are being comfortable in an uncomfortable situa-

tion and when it happens that none of those concerns rear their ugly head and you have a ball, it guides you to saying yes when they offer you the role.” Pickett just wrapped up a month’s run in the Arts Club Theatre’s production of The Matchmaker where he played the characters Joe Scanlon and Rudolph. Elephant & Piggie’s We Are in a Play! runs until March 31 at The Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island. The show is 60 minutes with no intermission. Tickets are $35 for adults, $29 for seniors/students and $18 for children three to 18. They’re available at: tickets.carouseltheatre.ca or by phone at 604-685-6217. The 60-women and girls choir, which recently won the highest prize in international competition, will join the Zephyra Women’s Choir to raise funds for the Saint James Music Academy (SJMA). “Choosing the SJMA as the recipient of our concert funds was a natural choice for these women and girls,” said director Fiona Blackburn. “Our mission — giving voice, changing lives, creating extraordinary music — is to use our voices to change the lives of others, either with the music itself, or by tangibly giving funds to other societies that also bring about social change.” The mission of the Saint James Music Academy — to inspire Vancouver’s

University hearing study seeks participants.

Connect Hearing, with hearing researcher Professor Kathy Pichora-Fuller at the University of Toronto, seeks participants who are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids for a hearing study investigating factors that can influence better hearing. All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge and if appropriate, the clinician may discuss hearing rehabilitation options including hearing aids. Qualifying participants may also receive a demo of the latest hearing technology. The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve life-changing hearing healthcare across Canada. Why participate in the hearing study? Hearing problems typically result from damage to the ear and researchers have spent decades trying to understand the biology behind hearing loss. More importantly, researchers now realize the need to better understand how hearing

loss affects your everyday life*. In this new hearing study, Professor Pichora-Fuller and her team are trying to find out how people learn to live with hearing loss and how new solutions could help these people take action sooner and live life more fully. It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss1, but most do not seek treatment right away. In fact, the average person with hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help2. This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people often find they can “get by” without help, however as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. For some people this loss of clarity is only a problem at noisy restaurants or in the car, but for others it makes listening a struggle throughout the entire day. By studying people who have difficulty hearing in noise or with television, we hope to identify key factors impacting these difficulties and further understand their influence on the treatment process.

If you are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids, you can register to be a part of this new hearing study† by calling: 1.888.242.4892 or visiting connecthearing.ca/hearing-study.

Four Winds raises $20,000 to benefit Reach programs

The second annual Cheers for Children live music evening held Feb. 2 to benefit Reach Child and Youth Development Society raised $20,000 for children with needs. Building on last year’s success, tickets were sold out two weeks ahead of time for the Harris Barn fundraiser presented by Four Winds Brewing Company. Cheers for Children 2019 raised $6,000 more than the inaugural event in 2018. “To see that beautiful barn filled with people of all ages having such a great time while supporting our children was incredibly heartwarming,” said Reach development manager Kristin Bibbs. “We cannot thank Four Winds enough for spearheading such a successful event.”

Firefighters’ donation part of $100,000 pledge The Delta Firefighters Charitable Society recently dropped off a cheque for $25,000 for the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. The donation goes towards its $100,000 pledge in support of the Peter C. and Elizabeth Toigo Diagnostic Services Building that is on track for completion this fall. The expansion of Delta Hospital’s lab and medical imaging services will mean faster and more sophisticated diagnosis for patients. It will also mean more state-of-the-art equipment in both departments, providing this community with a broader access to diagnostic services. “We are so grateful for the support we receive

West Coast gal not a fan of popular pursuits

Living Matters

BARBARA GUNN

East Coasters are said to like their Celtic music.

Prairie folk are said to like their curling. People in these parts are said to be fond of, um…skiing, right? Apparently, I’m an anomaly. The West Coast is in my blood and my roots and my genes and all that. The T-bar, not so much. Sure, I tried it once, oh, way back in the day. I lost a pole. I lost a glove. I lost

control and flew frantically down the side of a mountain, slamming into a youngster practising his snow plow. That was it. Sure, I continued to visit ski resorts when I moved well into adulthood, but I bypassed the slopes in favour of establishments that had fireplaces and cozy couches and Irish coffee on offer.

a proud West Coaster. But I do not like to ski. West Coasters are also fond of sailing — or so the thinking goes among many folks I know. Again, I must be a West Coast imposter. This is something I also tried, very much back in the day. The boat belonged to a friend. C’mon, he said. We’ll go out for the after-

noon. You’re gonna love it. At first, it was pleasant enough. The day was warm and the ocean was glistening. But then the friend insisted on moving away from the shore and raising the sails. The boat picked up speed and began to list to one side. “Isn’t this fabulous?” called the friend from the front of the vessel. I suggested we issue a mayday. I like water, I really do, especially when it’s in a bottle or a bathtub. But a sailboat, it seemed to me, is best enjoyed when it’s tied up in a marina on a lovely summer day. You know, when you’re able to relax on the deck and catch a few rays. That’s my kind of sailing. And so it goes. This West Coast gal loves the mountains and sea. But you can keep your sailboats and skis.

That’s my kind of skiing. The other kind, well, can only be undertaken when there’s snow on the ground, and snow is cold and wet can get in the top of yours boots and underneath your mittens. Pretty? Sure, it’s borderline pretty, but only when you’re indoors sipping on the Irish coffee. That’s me, anyway. I am

More than 60 per cent of Canadians who have a personal experience with dementia have reported being ignored or dismissed. The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is inviting South Delta residents to come together and join in changing this by registering a team for the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s. The local edition of the province-wide event is on Sunday, May 5 at Delta Secondary in Ladner. The walk is the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s flagship fundraiser. It provides a meaningful way for South Delta residents to celebrate and remember people in their lives who have been affected by dementia, and take action at the same time to raise funds and awareness within the community. “Stigma reduction is at the core of our movement to create a dementiafriendly B.C.,” says Sara Wagner, the society’s manager of regional Services for the Fraser region. Funds raised at the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s will help the Alzheimer Society of B.C. provide support and education programs that directly benefit South Delta residents. To set up a team, go to walkforalzheimers.ca and follow the prompts.

LIVE WELL South Delta is here for you and your best health! What is a LIVE WELL Exercise Clinic? It is a medical fitness clinic that specializes in supervised exercise and healthy lifestyle coaching for people who have chronic health conditions such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and for prevention. What makes LIVE WELL different?

A story about passion, illness, and being a woman in business; Having the torch (or I like to think of it as a crown) passed to me from The Urban Rack’s previous owner, one of the integral traditions that I have continued is the Company’s annual Spring Charity Fashion Show fundraiser. This year will mark the show’s 20th year! For 2019 we have chosen Crohns & Colitis Canada as our charity. I chose this charity for personal reasons, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis 12 years ago. My Grandfather, who lived with UC passed away as a result of colon cancer. Fortunately for me (and my generation living with crohns/ Colitis), there is an abundance of new research and medication available. These medical advances have allowed me to live a mostly normal life. Here’s the thing; being presented with a debilitating (at times) and incurable auto immune disease has a way of getting us to see our quality of life from a different perspective. When I was diagnosed I had a decent career, was managing a household, and in a marriage (that later ended in divorce) Everything was good, good but not great. See, I’m the girl who wants “Great” actually I want better than great, I want amazing! I had the burning desire to do something that was my own. Something that used my own talents & creativity, where I was able to express and utilize my artistic and entrepreneurial mind. Having this

Caylea Burch illness was not a deterrent, instead Colitis was part of the fire that made me decide to jump. I was determined to be working in the fashion industry, and sure as shit (pardon the pun) I ended up running my own company. Now the business of retail is not for the faint of heart. Many thought I was crazy taking on the stress of running this business, and oh the stress. Big stress. Huge stress. Those diagnosed with Crohns and Colitis are told to keep stress levels low. What the hell was I doing?? People in my life thought that I was crazy. Maybe I am crazy, but I believe you can’t get to the “great,” and the “amazing” without a sprinkle of crazy. So, here I am living this crazy, amazing life. I jumped and am determined to fly. In my world, failure is not an option. Fashion retail is my passion. The love and support of customers, the excitement & creativity of styling people, and working with an amazing team of women is my reward, and for that I am truly grateful everyday! Happy International Woman’s Day!

In September, 2017 Dr. Sarah Harland left her 11 year practice in Steveston, B.C. to pursue something closer to home. Having lived in the beautiful community of Tsawwassen for the past eight years with her husband and two young girls, she knew that this was the final place she wanted to put down roots. “This is a fantastic community to raise children, we knew we had found our forever home within weeks of living here.” As it happened, Dr. Larry Leslie was ready to retire after 40+ years, and the transition was seamless. This June 2019 marks the twenty year anniversary of graduating from dental school, and Dr. Harland has enjoyed her passion and working in the field of dentistry immensely. “Dr. Leslie had built an incredible practice with a very strong foundation, so it was easy for me to bring in some of my existing patients and work hard to connect with new ones. I am particularly proud of our staff of strong women, they are second to none and have an extremely unyielding work ethic. Never in all my years have I worked with such an

I take pride in the fact that we work hard to connect with our patients, from the very young to the elderly….and everything in between.” Understanding that the dental office can be a very stressful atmosphere for some, the staff at Tsawwassen Place Dental try their very best to make you feel at ease whenever possible. “We truly appreciate your business, and hope that we can continue to earn your respect and mutual trust”.

For something to captivate me for almost 50 years, it must be interesting. I’ve studied the human body and its relationship to movement, mindfulness and overall health my entire life. Pilates is the method that caught my attention 20 years ago and has been the center point of my work ever since. Pilates is about moving well. It will build strength, flexibility, improve posture, energy and zest. The specialized equipment is comfortable, fun and helps movement feel amazing. If you live with aches, pains, injuries or just feel tight, then that’s a sign that you are out of alignment somewhere in your posture or in the way you move. Pilates restores this and the result is that you feel strong, mobile and energized. You carry yourself with a noticeable confidence. You look better, feel

DELTA CARPETS & FLOOR DESIGN

“Family Owned & Operated Since 1967”

Our store is family owned and operated since we first opened in 1967. It’s amazing to think Delta Carpets started the same year Lester B. Pearson was our Prime Minister, the very first issue of Rolling Stone magazine was published and the Beatles released Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. We are thrilled to be celebrating our 52nd year in Ladner and for me, it has been awesome to be working in our family business for 37 years. There has been so much change in floorcovering over the years. We have always made it our mandate to be on top of the styles and trends by ensuring we have the best selection of samples as well as the product knowledge to help you make the right decision for your home. Our biggest priority through all of the years has always been taking care of our customers by offering the best service and selection. Our showroom today is 3000 square feet and filled with a huge selection of area rugs, hardwood, laminate,

Currently employing over 25 employees over 5 franchises, Tara and her husband David pride themselves on being locally owned and operated, and a small business with big heart. Their workforce including Shelby Snow (Design Consultant) and Ashley Bartyik (Marketing Manager) pictured, has a strong female presence, helping to enforcing the work hard attitude onto the Anderson’s four daughters as well! Helping empower all employees is what David and Tara work hard for, and their team is more like family than co-workers. Their dedication to their staff and local communities saw them win the 2018 Delta Chamber of Commerce Hat’s Off To Excellence Award for Business Leadership, something they are very proud of. “We are a full-service business from consultation to installation” says owner Tara Anderson, who says the business name can be misleading. The skilled staff will assist you the whole way through, setting up your appointment, choosing your products, professionally measuring and then installing! Enhancing window coverings not only helps with the look and appeal of your home, it can also help your wallet. Certain window coverings the Anderson’s can provide help trap heat in winter and expel it in the summertime. Coming from a fifth-generation farming family Danielle and Alicia Guichon understand the importance of supporting and buying local produce. In 2001, beginning as the youngest vendors at The Ladner Village Market and carrying only 6-10 items, they eventually took their business to the roadside of Arthur Drive. On Arthur Drive, the girls built a strong following and both point out that ‘our customers want to support local farmers and local businesses from their community.’ Once the girls realized that the community had a strong desire to buy Delta grown crops, while in season, the idea for ‘Backroads’ bloomed. Moving forward a few years later, the want and need for ‘buying local’ is still as strong as ever. With the opening of their produce store, Backroads Family Farm Market, which now carries over 100 items, including their own farm fresh eggs, local bread, fresh cut flowers and other novelty goods, the focus remains on supporting local. The Guichon Family built and operated this stand from 1980-1989, before turning their focus to expanding their farm. In 2014, Danielle and Alicia

The concept of doing unto others as you want done unto you, is more than just a phrase. This concept inspired owner, Rhonda Doram, to found a meaningful business modelled to meet the needs for her own cherished Grandmother. Recognizing gaps in affordable care options and ignited by a core desire to be of service for others, HoneyDo Lifestyle Assistant Inc. was launched in 2008. Quickly after inception, it became increasingly clear the need for consistent and heartFULL in-home services was far-reaching. HoneyDo continues to meet the needs of seniors and their families across Delta and South Fraser regions, in maintaining their independence to ‘Live and Age Well in Place’ safely and successfully, wherever they call home. In response to overtaxed care systems, an exploding baby boomer population, and concerns about affordability, HoneyDo’s award-winning services provide a unique opportunity. With consistent support, many seniors are able to continue living independent lives, meanwhile staying connected to family, friends and resources in their local community. Support for grown children, juggling busy lives and managing care for their aging parents is pivotal, vastly reducing stress, and giving back quality time spent together as a family, not as caregivers.

Goaltender earns Moscow invite Angeo Basson member of North American team headed to Russian tourney MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

For a talented young goaltender who doesn’t turn 13 until later this month, Angeo Basson already has an impressive international hockey resumé that’s about to get even longer. Basson is one of just 17 2006-born players from throughout North America named to an all-star team that will be heading to Russia in late July for the Tretiak Cup — regarded as the highest level tournament for 13-year-olds in Europe. The event is co-hosted by the Russian Ice Hockey Federation, LEGACY Global Sports and the Tretiak Ice Hockey Academy. Basson received the prestigious invite based on his play at last summer’s World Selects 2006 Invitational in Bolzano, Italy where he was named to the Tournament All-Star Team. The remarkable journey actually began a year earlier when Basson was among 180 players from across the country selected for the Hockey Hall of Fame Tournament in Toronto. His strong play got the attention of Gerry Price — father of Montreal Canadiens’ star Carey Price — who happened to be evaluating goaltenders at the tournament. That earned Basson the opportunity to play on one of the six North American teams that participated at the 10-day tournament in Italy. He was one of just two North American goalies named to the All-Star Team that was announced at a special post-tournament ceremony. Basson was thrilled and thought that’s where the recognition ended until he got a recent letter in the mail from the Russian Ice Hockey Federation. “I just thought they were congratulating me again for being an all-star,” recalled Angeo. Then I started to read it further.” The letter welcomed Basson to the tournament and unveiled the entire roster. He is the only goalie on the team and one of just four from B.C. Two others are Jordan Gavin and Tomas Mrsic from the powerhouse Semiahmoo A1 team and Lynden Lakovic from West Kelowna. There are also players from New Jersey, Vermont, Anaheim, New York, Boston, Toronto, Hamilton, Misssissauga and Calgary. A personal video call followed from legendary goalie Vladislav Tretiak who is now president of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation. “He played tremendous. The first game he got a shutout,” recalled Angelo’s dad Andreas Basson who made the trip to Italy last summer. “We were thinking he might make it but there were 18 teams and 36 goalies. All of them were good. It was a tremendous honour and we thought that’s where it was going to end.” The trip to Moscow is costing the players $500 for airfare. All other expenses — accommodations, meals, uniforms, practice time and cultural program — is being looked after by the Tretiak Academy.

Angeo Basson received a personal invite from legendary Russian goalie Vladislav Tretiak to play in his tournament this summer as a member of a North American all-star team. When Basson is not playing on all-star teams, he has between the pipes for South Delta Minor Hockey’s Pee Wee A1 Storm this past season. Next year it will be the Delta Hockey Academy or B.C. Hockey’s new Bantam AAA Zone League. So what separates him from other goalies his age? His time working with goaltending coach Pasco Valana, who is on staff with the national women’s team, has been a big part of his development. “With Pasco, it’s all about positional play and angles. I think what they saw in Italy is

how good his technique is because he has been working with Pasco for so long,” said Andreas. “Other kids can stop the pucks but might be out of position for the next shot where he is extremely under control. “Carey Price’s dad came up to us afterward to say how much Angelo reminded him of his son when he was that age. All the same techniques and moves.” Angeo has been playing in goal since the Intro Hockey 4 level. “I like the pressure that comes with being a goalie and harder games instead of easier ones,” he smiled.

Pacersfinishsecondatcurlingprovincials Five-year run concludes for Grade 12 rink with Valley title & great showing in Maple Ridge Four good friends and curling teammates nearly went out in grand style at last weekend’s B.C. High School Championships. The Delta Pacers team of Tavin Edge (lead), Clayton Henry (second), Sam Husdon (third) and Connor Deane (skip), finished second to Westsyde in the eight team boys event at the Golden Ears Curling Club. The girls draw also featured eight rinks with all 16 participants having won regional playdowns to earn their way to Maple Ridge. The Pacers went 6-1 in the playdowns, losing a tight battle with Westsyde that came down to the last rock. DSS managed to tie the game in the eighth to force an extra end. The Kamloops school then drew in to score one on its final shot, ending an extremely well-played game between the

two rinks. The road to Maple Ridge for the boys included a breakthrough victory at the Lower Fraser Valley playdowns after finishing second to Elgin Park the last four years. The Pacers then captured the Fraser Valley Championship with a win over Riverside. The team have come through school together since attending kindergarten at Holly Elementary. They were introduced to curling during a school trip to the Tunnel Town Curling Club in Grade 7, leading to joining Tunnel Town’s junior program. Since forming the school team in Grade 8, the boys have been under the guidance and mentorship of coach Marcie Henry. They have also been fortunate to have teacher sponsor Susan Haynes for all five years.

DSS comes within one win of first BC berth in nine years The Delta Pacers came everso-close to earning their first trip to the BC AAA Boys Basketball Championships in nine years. Delta dropped an 80-72 decision to Robert Bateman on Friday in the fifth place game at the Fraser Valley Championships. The 16-team playdowns offered five berths to this week’s provin-

school. The five teams headed to the LEC — Pitt Meadows, GW Graham, Hansen, North Delta and Bateman — have been a fixture or appeared in the provincial rankings this season. “I am proud of the guys and what we accomplished as a team,” said Pacers head coach

Donovan Britten of his unranked squad. “I even told the guys before the game the first team to get 80 points will win.” Standout Grade 12 guard Kavi Bhandal was named a Second Team All-Star. The Pacers last qualified for the provincials in 2010 — prior to a 3A tier being added.

It’s quite the road trip for the defending B.C. boys “AAA” rugby champions. The South Delta Sun Devils are embarking on a twoweek tour of the United Kingdom from March 7-21. After a very successful trip in 2015, planning for a 2019 tour began two years later. The Sun Devils will play four matches and also attend England taking on Italy in a Six Nations League tilt slated for Twickenham Stadium in London. Players will be billeted with families at four different schools — starting at Uxbridge (just outside of London) and ending at Kinross (near Edinburgh). In total, the tour will cover 790 kilometres with some stops including Oxford, a coal mine in Barnsley and St. Andrew’s Golf Course. The SDSS contingent will include 24 players and three coaches/chaperones. The program thanks The Tsawwassen Order of Old Bastards (TOOBs) and the Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions for their help in fundraising efforts, as well as their own families and friends. South Delta won its first-ever BC rugby title a year ago.

Defending BC AAA rugby champion South Delta Sun Devils leave today for a two-week tour of the United Kingdom that will see the senior boys team play four matches. The trip has been two years in the making and will include attending a Six Nations League match between England and Italy.

Delta Gymnastics & SDSS co-hosting high school championships

The Delta Gymnastics Society and South Delta Secondary are partnering to bring the B.C. Secondary Schools Championships to the city for the very first time. The two-day meet runs today and Friday at SDSS and will feature 300 gymnasts from across the province. These student athletes have qualified through zone competitions to make their way to Tsawwassen.

“We have over 70 schools involved in the competition this year,” says Tessa Jansen, Delta Gymnastics High School Coordinator. “It is a great way to promote high school gymnastics and expose more high school students to the sport.” Delta Gymnastics’ high school program is one of the largest in the province with 55 student athletes, ranging from grades 7-12. These gymnasts have vari-

Predeceased by parents Jack and Gertie, sisters Jesse and Betty, daughters Susan and Jacquey, and grandson John Staub. Survived by his brother Malcolm (Mac) in the UK and cousin Ralph (Norah) of Richmond, BC. Jim will be sadly missed by his loving children Graham (Cerrie), Bob (Lynne), Greg (Drew), John (Tausha), Doug (Karen) and Tish (Nick). He was a proud grandpa, great grandpa and great-great grandpa. He will also be remembered by numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was born in Nottingham, England to doting parents, where he left school at 13 years old to start working. He met the love of his life Pat, they married and were blessed with eight children. Jim was active from the first day of World War 2. From 1939 to 1942 he served in the British Merchant Navy sailing on the SS Sacramento Valley, SS Llanstephan Castle and the Queen Mary ferrying troops across the Atlantic. Pat and Jim moved to Canada after the war in 1948 and settled in Edmonton for many years. Jim was a business leader and lifetime member of the Optimist Club. He worked in insurance before starting his own real estate business. Eventually he became a land developer with great vision and far ahead of his time. Eventually Jim would have the Instabox organization start up in Canada and worked with many great friends and family until 2010. Jim enjoyed staying active at the gym, raced stock cars at Edmonton Speedway Park, later enjoyed less dangerous sports on the coast including boating, fishing and golfing. Jim travelled extensively with family and friends. He continued to be an active member of the Burma Star and the Canadian Legion. Jim was a free spirit, his bags were always packed and ready for a new adventure. We know Jim is dancing in the arms of Pat forever more and always. He will never be forgotten.

Don't forget to set your clocks forward one hour this Sunday, March 10th!

CELEBRATIONS CARD OF THANKS

WILSON, Fredrick Levi February 12, 1931 - February 28, 2019 On the morning of February 28th Dad was greeted with open arms by his Canoe Pass family, a loving embrace from his first wife Gladys, parents Rose Keziah and Andrew John, brothers Andy (Lil), Pat (Mary), Lloyd (Carol), Rocky, and sisters Pauline (Stan) and Rosemary “Dubby”. Standing near were nephews Rod and Jordan. Surrounded by all of his ancestors, we know he is at peace. They are once again all standing strong as one and are holding all of us up as a family. He is survived by his wife Rosemary Trehearne, sons Fredrick (Danielle) and Marvin, daughter April Shier (Bryan), grandchildren Levi (Emily), Matthew, Andrew and Craig, greatgrandchildren Andrew and Gladys, brother-in-law Stan Harris and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

May I/We offer our sincerest thanks to all those who wrote cards, sent emails, commented on FaceBook, telephoned or spoke to us personally as we trod the walkways of Ladner to express their condolences in the recent passing of Shirley. Your words were welcomed and they comforted me/us. Shirley was a princess whose love never faded nor wavered through our 65 years together and the many, many miles travelled each holding the other’s hand. She was always at my side through thick and thin, in sickness and in health and always with God’s Love to accompany us. Thank you, one and all. Bob Orrick and family.
