Ladner boy has rare disorder Five-year-old Chase Bassi one of only 60 in world to be diagnosed with SLC6A1 IAN JACQUES

It’s a disorder so rare that only 60 people in the world have been diagnosed with it.

Ladner’s Chase Bassi is one of them.

The five-year-old active youngster has a rare neurological disorder called SLC6A1.

His parents Michelle and Kam, life-long Ladnerites, are bringing attention to the disorder while raising funds for research to hopefully one day find a cure.

Chase was diagnosed on Dec. 27, 2017.

“It started when he was 18 months and learning how to walk. He started having these falling episodes and pediatrician after pediatrician said it is just him starting to learn how to walk,” recalled Michelle. “We called it a diagnostic odyssey because we just felt it was something more. Finally specialists and tests at BC Children’s Hospital brought us to where we are today.”

“SLC6A1 is the largest inhibitory nerve transmitter so in Chase’s case, 50 per cent of the time that is not firing so that is the cause,” she said. “Once he got his diagnosis, we started doing research and I found one article of a case in Denmark, but that is changing. More research and cases are becoming more present.”

Chase was born with

SLC6A1, but Kam said it’s not hereditary.

“Before his actual treatment began, which is seizure medication, Chase would have these seizures frequently throughout the day, but the medication is helping, but there are also other things. It’s very much a work in progress and a lot of self-diagnosis by us because the doctors aren’t seeing him all the time,” Kam said.

Despite the challenges associated with SLC6A1, Chase is an active, happy child.

He goes to preschool through the support of an education assistant, will start playing T-ball this summer, and is taking skating and swimming lessons.

“His personality is very happy, very determined and he gives it his all,” said Michelle.

“He wants to do what everyone else is, so that’s what gives him motivation, but we don’t know what the future holds, that is our race against time for a long-term diagnosis, so that’s the challenge. We are not giving up. You have to fight for your child and fight for other families and that’s what we are doing.”

The Bassis have joined an online community on Facebook where they network with other families who have this and other neurological disorders.

They also continue to do their own research and are actively fundraising to go towards research being done at University of Texas-Southwestern. They hope to raise $1 million.

They have a sold-out fundraiser planned in May with more than 800 people expected. They have also started a GoFundme page at: https://www. gofundme.com/chasesinghdreams.

Spring Clean-Up to create cluttered curbs this weekend

It promises to be a busy weekend cleaning out garages and garden sheds as the City of Delta’s annual Spring Clean-Up is set for next week.

The program, which waives normal garbage volume limits to allow residents to drag almost whatever they want to the curb, will take place on regular garbage days: Monday, April 1 in Tsawwassen and Tuesday, April 2 in Ladner.

Spring Clean-Up takes place in North Delta the following week.

The annual program comes with a few rules: • Only residents that receive Delta’s weekly garbage collection service are eligible to participate.

• Material cannot be placed at curb any sooner than the weekend prior to the scheduled collection day.

• The amount of accepted material cannot exceed a pick-up truck load.

• Items must be able to be handled by two people; oversized items are not accepted.

There are also a number of items that are not accepted as part of Spring Clean-Up, including mattresses, tires, construction materials, electronics and small appliances, paint and hazardous liquids, and more.

Recycling is also an important part of the annual clean-up and residents are encouraged to donate items in good condition, such as clothing.

• March 17, 2 a.m., 5000-block of 7th Avenue:

Complainant called to report a vehicle in the ditch outside his residence. Police attended and contacted the owner of the vehicle who stated he had parked the car in the ditch because he was too inebriated to drive.

Police issued a violation ticket for driving without due care and attention.

• March 21, 7:45 p.m., Fisherman Way and Salish Sea Drive: Police conducted a traffic stop of a driver who was observed failing to make full stop at a stop sign. A distinct odour of liquor was detected on the driver’s breath when speaking. A breathalyzer was taken, and the driver blew a “Fail,” resulting in a three-day immediate roadside prohibition. The

• March 21, 8:26 p.m., 4900-block of Canoe Pass Way: After exiting the parking lot of a liquor store, a driver passed through a Delta police sobriety roadblock. An odour of liquor was detected on the driver’s breath and the driver admitted to having consumed alcohol.

A breathalyzer was taken and the driver blew a “Fail,” resulting in a threeday immediate roadside prohibition. Arrangements were made for someone to pick up the vehicle.

• March 22, 1:31 a.m., 1200-block of 56th Street: Complainant called police to report that an intoxicated male was causing a disturbance by banging on the pub doors, and hugging and kicking the plants in the median of the street.

The intoxicated male complied with police orders and was given a courtesy ride home.

• March 23, 9:15 a.m., Tsawwassen Beach Road: Complainant called police to report that over a dozen eggs had been thrown inside his unlocked truck overnight. Total cost of damage: $500 • March 24, 11:30 p.m., Wilson Drive: Complainant reported a loud party. Police attended the area and all was quiet.

• March 17, 3 p.m., 6300-block of 45A Avenue: Complainant reported her vehicle had been broken into within the last 24 hours. Complainant advised that she had left the vehicle unlocked. Her vehicle had been rummaged through and a pair of sunglasses with an estimated value of $700 had been taken.

• March 17, 11:25 p.m., 5500-block of Grove Avenue: Complainant reported hearing loud noises behind her house, which backs onto a park.

Police patrolled the streets around the perimeter of the park as well as went on foot in the park. All was quiet.

• March 18, 3:50 a.m., 5100-block of 64th Street: A police officer noticed a black trailer in the middle of the road while on patrol.

Police contacted the registered owner of the trailer

who advised it should be in his driveway. Registered owner attended scene to verify it was his trailer and that nothing was stolen from the trailer. Owner was able to tow his trailer back home.

• March 19, 8:30 a.m., 5200-block of Oak Place: Complainant attended the police headquarters to report that she received a telephone call from who she believed to be TD Visa security. The caller was able to convince the complainant that her credit card had been compromised. She gave her credit card number and remote access to her computer. She then went out and purchased two $500 Google Play cards and gave the security codes.

The caller then provided another elaborate story about an ongoing investigation and asked her to provide four more $500 Google Play cards. At this time the complainant recognized she had been scammed. Her credit and debit cards were cancelled and was advised by police to contact Equifax and the Credit Bureau regarding potential identity fraud.

• March 19, 4 p.m., 5000-block of Paton Drive: Complainant reported to police that his vehicle, which was parked in his driveway, had been rummaged through overnight. The complainant advised that he had left his vehicle unlocked, and that approximately $20 in lottery tickets had been stolen from the centre console.

• March 20, 7:24 p.m., 6000-block of Deas Island Road: Complainant reported to police that an unknown person had cut some communication copper wires.

Complainant advised police that these are commonly stolen in other areas and that they have been alarmed to alert staff who then phone police.

These particular wires had not been alarmed and the complainant believes the unknown person will come back later to see if police responded.

Approximate damage for these wires is around $2,000. Increase patrol of the area by police put in place.

Conversion of the Houweling Nurseries greenhouse in East Ladner to become one of the biggest cannabis producers in Canada is well underway.

Agraflora Organics International Inc. last year announced its partnership with Houweling Nurseries to convert 2.2 million square feet to pot. The 20-hectare (49-acre) facility on 64th Street will be the second largest cannabis greenhouse in Canada.

The company said the Delta facility is second in size only to an Ontario facility owned by Canopy Growth Corp., the world’s largest cannabis company.

Canopy also has a largescale operation at a greenhouse on Hornby Drive in East Delta.

As far as the Houweling conversion, a news release last week stated the retrofit has been split into three phases. The first phase includes 350,000 square feet, including post-production facilities, with completion sched-

uled for the first quarter of 2019. The second phase includes an additional 1.45 million square feet to be completed later this year as well as the final phase, consisting of 400,000 square feet.

“Initial activities of the retrofit include site preparation for propagation operations including 250,000 square feet of flowering area, development of standard operation procedures and completion of security audit and development of overall plan, plus order-

ing of long lead time items and planning with plant genetic experts in preparation for the first crop,” states Organic Flower Investments Group Inc., whose subsidiary Delta Organic Cannabis has a stake in Agraflora Organics International Inc. Houweling has also started a propagation business supplying nurseries with cannabis and hemp plants.

Say hello to Grady

Grady is the sweetest Chihuahua mix you’ll ever meet. He is a laid back four year old whose favorite activity is to cuddle and howl with you. He is quiet and has just enough attitude to give him some edge ÿ He has had 17 teeth removed, and has the smile to prove it! He loves to eat and we have started watering down his food to make it easier on him with so little teeth. Grady is great on leash and is house trained. Short, regular walks do him just fine. He is crate trained and perfectly content going for a snooze when left alone. Grady is more of a people guy, and prefers older kids and adults to young children. He’s good when meeting other dogs off leash, and likes to take a little time to warm up to anyone. Grady has a low platelet issue, which requires daily medication, regular vet check ups and blood work. He has also recently been diagnosed with diabetes, which is under control and he is doing well. Despite his minor health issues, he is still full of life and a very happy guy! Grady is a wonderful, dog and would make a cuddly companion for almost any household.

A large-scale greenhouse in East Ladner has been given the go-ahead to fully convert to cannabis.

Emerald Health Therapeutics Inc. has announced that its joint venture with Village Farms greenhouse, called Pure Sunfarms, received from Health Canada another amendment to its cultivation licence. The additional approximately 206,000 square feet of

growing area in the fourth and final quadrant of the greenhouse brings Pure Sunfarms’ total licensed cannabis production area to approximately 1.03 million square feet in 16 grow rooms. The newly licensed area is expected to be fully planted by the end of March, according to Pure Sunfarms.

“Pure Sunfarms is now licensed across all its growing areas and we congratulate their team for this significant accomplishment,” said Dr. Avtar Dhillon, president and

executive chairman of Emerald in a news release.

“With Emerald’s 50 per cent stake in one of the largest fully operational cannabis production facilities in the world, we expect to realize significant economic value from Pure Sunfarms. We expect our supply agreement with Pure Sunfarms for 40 per cent of its 2019 production, along with our Quebec and hemp operations, to support strong quarter-to-quarter sales growth this year.”

Pure Sunfarms says it’s

now replanting Quadrant 1 of the Delta greenhouse following the planned suspension of production in that area last autumn to begin the process of installing supplemental lighting to maximize yields in the winter months.

Last week, Pure Sunfarms announced a wholesale supply agreement with Canna Farms Ltd., which will offer a select variety of Pure Sunfarms-branded products to Canna Farms’ medical clients for retail purchase.

Let’s not forget to include housing for everyone in Delta.

That’s the message from the Delta Housing Be Mine Society as the new city council looks at ways of creating more housing in the city, options the society says should include residents with intellectual disabilities.

“What would happen my son Kurtis if I were to go to? I actually have five children, so hopefully one will pick up that support for him, but there are many out there who don’t have that security. What would happen to him is that he would be put, probably, in a home share or whatever is available for residential living. He would be moved out of his community where he has all his connections, where he works and volunteers and is an athlete,” said society president ShirleyAnn Reid.

Formed in 2011, the society is a place for families that are concerned about housing for their children who have developmental disabilities and/or mental illness.

Members have researched

models of housing and developer collaborations that have worked throughout Canada, including Semiahmoo House and Chorus Community House in Surrey. Society members have also created partnerships with B.C. Housing, Reach and Community Living B.C. The need for appropriate housing for people with disabilities was included in a report for the city’s housing task force back in 2013, while a 2016 survey undertaken by the society found that almost 90 per cent of individuals with developmental disabilities in need of housing are living with their family or caregiver.

“Many adults with a developmental disability have lived in Delta since birth. Currently, many of these individuals work, volunteer and compete as athletes in Delta. The one basic component missing to continue to have a good life is a safe and supportive home in their familiar community,” the report explained.

A survey last year by the society found that at least 425 adults with intellectual disabilities living in Delta will need housing within the next 10 years.

Noting it can be devastating for someone with intellectual challenges to be forced to move out of their home community, Reid said inclusive options allows people to continue to be participating members of their community

The civic report found that as Delta’s population ages, impacting both the number of seniors needing support as well as adults with intellectual disabilities whose parents or caregivers may no longer be able to adequately care for them, there will be an increased need for affordable, appropriate and suitable housing.

Noting individuals with intellectual disabilities face a number of barriers to accessing appropriate housing, the report states that such adults and lowincome seniors often have similar housing needs and preferences, and there is potential to create intergenerational supported housing solutions that meet the needs of both groups.

It’s a similar message the society had last fall during a community forum in Ladner, where it was noted certain segments of the population are being excluded from Delta due to a lack of choices or the rising cost

of housing.

Noting increasing options come with multiple benefits, the report states, “People living with intellectual disabilities have long been excluded from community life, in large part due to segregated housing. Inclusive housing options should acknowledge and reflect the desire of those living with intellectual disabilities to be active participants in their communities and should be designed to support genuine and meaningful inclusion.”

Commenting on the federal government’s National Housing Strategy, noting it’s not clear how it will play out at the local level, the society’s 2018 report suggests the success of any initiative is dependent on partnerships among the federal government, the province, the City of Delta, local non-profits and co-operative community housing providers and the private sector.

“The availability of land in Delta upon which to build new affordable and inclusive housing developments will remain a challenge for all involved,” the report states.

Saying it’s a bad deal for taxpayers and local sports groups that are being displaced, members of the lacrosse community continue to voice anger about an agreement Delta has with the Vancouver Giants, but team owner Ron Toigo insists he and the city have done their best to be accommodating.

Lacrosse supporters had a meeting Monday evening at the South Delta Recreation Centre to discuss what can be done about the deal that will keep the ice in so the Giants can practice during what could be an extended Western Hockey League playoff run.

The move impacts all dry floor users, although the lacrosse community has been particularly vocal, saying it’s been “booted out” for a private, for-profit business.

Those is attendance agreed to start a petition in order to raise greater community awareness.

lacrosse club, noted 400 young lacrosse players, as well as those in roller and ball hockey, can’t start playing at the South Delta Recreation Centre and instead have been told they can start their seasons in other communities, where only a few poor time slots are available.

“Our sport is so rich in this municipality but it’s unfortunate the parks and recreation department doesn’t recognize us as a valid sport. We need to stand up as a group and have our voices heard,” said Burr.

Matt Taylor, vicepresident of Delta Minor Lacrosse, agreed, saying displacing users in a taxpayer-funded facility for a private business, which pays just $25,000 in rent, is a bad deal all around.

Saying displacing local groups is contrary to Mayor George Harvie’s Delta Families First platform, Darcy Phillips, president of the Delta Junior Islanders, complained that contrary to what the city claimed, they’ve had very little notification or cooperation from either Delta

A news release from the group states, “The private usage of publicly funded facilities at the expense of community user groups is simply wrong. It is cheaper and makes more sense for the city to buy ice elsewhere at $200 per hour and in line with the Giants post season practice schedule needs. Even the Canucks have the sense to practice elsewhere when Rogers Arena is not available.”

The Giants are in the first round of the playoffs and are expected to make a deep post-season run.

The Giants, who prac-

tice at the Ladner Leisure Centre but play their games at the Langley Events Centre, have a deal for use of the leisure centre into early May, which would cut into the season for dry floor users. The Giants this year instead agreed to move practices to the South Delta Recreation Centre, but that’s still a bone of contention for other groups.

It all stems from a 2005 deal with Toigo to move his hockey club’s training facility to the leisure centre. The Giants at the time paid approximately $1 million toward an addition to the centre, which

included a weight room on the top floor open to the public as well as space for the hockey team on the ground floor. The Giants also got exclusive ice time at the arena. The deal was renewed for another 10-year term in 2015.

Saying it’s disappointing to hear he’s being accused of spreading misinformation, Toigo told the Optimist they had an agreement which included other groups being accommodated if the Giants had a playoff run, and that everything was fine until this year. He also pointed out even Phillips signed the original memorandum of understanding.

“It’s worked fine. We had moved our training camp or hockey school to Tilbury (Ice) to accommodate the lacrosse when needed. This has been in place for 14 years now and it’s all worked fine.

Back when we went to the league final and we had long runs in the playoffs in the past, we’ve accommodated and worked it out with each other. I don’t know what their motivation is,” Toigo explained.

“We’ve done nothing different than we’ve done in the past and, furthermore, we’ve bent over backwards to try to make it work. When they’ve had playoff runs, we’ve stayed out of the way and tried to accommodate them…

(Parks and recreation director) Ken Kuntz has done a good job trying to make sure everyone is taken care of and it’s unfair to put him in that kind of predicament,” added Toigo.

The city issued a news release this week noting that in anticipation of a potential playoff run for the Vancouver Giants and the associated need for rescheduling dry floor users, a meeting was held last month between staff and members of the Delta Lacrosse Association, which includes minor lacrosse. At the meeting, staff proposed alternatives to address the potential loss of practice time and have worked to accommodate all dry floor users despite being unable to reach a final agreement with representatives from minor lacrosse.

t’s awfully hard to play lacrosse on ice.

I offer you that astute observation as Delta’s lacrosse community continues to voice its anger over a deal the City of Delta has with the Vancouver Giants that’s keeping local youngsters off the floor of their neighbourhood arena.

The agreement generally works well, the junior hockey team using ice time during weekdays when no one else wants it, but it gets sticky due to a stipulation in the contract that ensures ice, should it be necessary, remains in place until the end of the WHL playoffs, which run into May. When that happens one of the two arenas in South Delta is off limits to lacrosse teams and other dry floor users.

This situation raises a perplexing question, one that has been asked before when these two worlds have collided: Why would the city inconvenience hundreds of lacrosse players to accommodate one for-profit hockey team? I’m not sure either.

Lacrosse officials feel disrespected by the arrangement and it’s hard to disagree with them. These are public facilities, paid for by the same taxpayers whose kids aren’t able to use them because a junior hockey team has struck a deal with the city. What’s happened to the Delta Families First agenda promoted by the new administration at city hall? Does it only apply in certain instances?

This issue is not about the Giants, owner Ron Toigo or his philanthropy, but boils down to one simple question: Does it make sense to have ice in a publicly-owned arena at a time when the vast majority of users (read taxpayers) of that facility require a dry floor?

The Giants aren’t in the wrong as they have a contract with the city, which then begs the question why Delta would allow such an arrangement knowing the potential ramifications?

I see no reason why the Giants wouldn’t be welcome as long as their needs don’t impact other users but should a conflict arise, well, it would make sense for them to then turn to one of the many private rinks in the region that have been constructed to accommodate those not well served by public facilities.

Taxpayer-funded arenas are meant to be used by the public, something that can’t happen when ice stays in during lacrosse season.

Police prove no call too small after crime of opportunity

t was another cold February day and I had an errand to do in Tilbury. It seemed like a good idea to combine it with a walk with my dog Rosie and my mother’s schnauzer in the North 40 dog park just off 72nd Street in East Ladner.

The parking lot was quiet. I parked diagonally across from a path that leads into the fields that border the former Vancouver Wireless Station. I don’t normally bring my handbag when I go for a dog walk but today was different, so I put my handbag on the floor behind the passenger seat out of sight.

The dogs were barking with anticipation so I quickly opened the back hatch and they roared out of my SUV. I was struggling with their leashes while making sure they were clear of a car entering the parking lot. I slammed the back hatch down and clicked my key fob.

I thought it was locked, but it wasn’t. Unbeknownst to me, someone was watching me.

I had a lovely walk, photographing the eagles swooping in and out of the trees, and the dogs had a great run. Back at the car I noticed the time, it was 2 p.m. I had walked for 45 minutes.

Not until 4 p.m. did I discover my wallet was gone. I reviewed my steps that day and I knew instantly I had been robbed at the park.

I immediately cancelled my cards. The banks were able to track my transactions. The thief had tried to withdraw money from my debit and Visa at a bank machine on King George Boulevard only 36 minutes after I walked away from my car. Twelve minutes later the thief successfully tapped my debit card for $75 at a gas station in Crescent Beach.

The next day I got a call from a man who lives in Ocean Park.

“Are you Ingrid Abbott?” “Yes,” I said. “I found your wallet, it was in the lane near my house.”

Tired of routinely finding people’s personal effects strewn along his dog walking route, this Good Samaritan is now talking to the police to see if he can help find the culprits.

A day later there’s a young, handsome Delta police constable standing in my kitchen asking me questions. They will do what they can to catch the thief he assures me. I love our community-centred police force, but I’m pessimistic. Aren’t there bigger crimes to solve? Yes, but apparently my stolen wallet counts. Six weeks later the file is active and we wait for the surveillance video that will hopefully identify the thief.

I know better than to leave my car unlocked, I’ve read the Optimist Crime Beat and know that petty crime is everywhere in our community. I was careless, and it’s easy to do with our busy lives.

Let my story be a lesson to be vigilant about locking your doors and protecting your personal belongings. Don’t be a crime of opportunity waiting to happen.

Hard to see craft brewery turning Southlands into Granville Island

Editor: Re: Don’t turn Southlands into another Granville Island or Steveston, letter to the editor, March 21 In The Art of the Deal, Donald Trump wrote, “A little hyperbole never hurts.” It would seem that Peter Nemeth took that to heart in his letter.

It was, as far as I can remember, always a component of the plan to have agricultural-related

businesses and small shops located within the Southlands development. Having coffee shops, bakeries, etc. makes for a livable community.

While perhaps not a traditional form of agriculture, brewing and distilling use agricultural output to produce an end product for consumers. Adding such a facility, as is proposed by Four Winds and Century, would be a very complementary piece to

an agricultural area neighbouring on residential.

In fact, having an established craft brewery with an attached restaurant would act as an anchor would most likely ensure the viability of the other businesses looking to locate to the area.

It is hard to fathom that a few shops, a brewery and a restaurant could turn into a Granville Island or Steveston style setting.

NDP would have been better off with Julian

Editor: Re: Cartoon accurately depicts political opportunist, letter to the editor, March 21 Contrary to what Tom Moore thinks, the cartoon of Jasmeet Singh does not depict a political opportunist. When Singh relocated from Brampton, Ontario to Burnaby, B.C. for work, he was just exercising one of his constitutional rights as a Canadian citizen.

That being said, I believe the NDP would probably be better off right now if it had either stuck with Thomas Mulcair until the next general election in October or if it had nominated a NDP member as the new leader who was already a member of Parliament.

As a former resident of Burnaby, I think that Peter Julian, who has been the MP for BurnabyNew Westminster since

2004 and who is widely respected as an “honourable” politician, would have been a great choice as NDP leader.

As a member of Parliament for the past 15 years, Julian would also have been able to speak for other social democrats in the House of Commons over the past couple of years (since Mulcair’s departure as NDP leader in 2016).

Dogs are just too unpredictable to be off-leash

Editor: Re: Dog walker believes officers could have used discretion, letter to the editor, March 21 Last September there was a very sad story where a nine-year-old girl was bitten very badly on the back of her leg by an unleashed bulldog in North Delta.

I was walking in North

Delta just after Christmas on River Road and a small, stocky dog ran out of his yard and bit my leg. It was a good thing I had on long underwear and jeans.

What happens if I had a child with me? I could have had a bad injury.

Two weeks later my husband and I were walking along Boundary Bay dike when a small dog, not on

a leash, rushed at us, barking and showing his teeth. I said to the owner, “Your dog should be on a leash.” She replied very adamantly that she didn’t want to leash her dog.

No one can predict 100 per cent of the time how a dog will react. I was a dog owner. Leash your dog, it is the law.

Teens willing to talk, even with phones in hand

Editor: I want to tell people about my experience with teenagers and their phones that I had in the last two weeks. One group of teenagers I am familiar with and the other young fellow I had never met.

As we know when phones are on, be it adults or young ones, there is complete quiet, no conver-

sation. So I’ve decided to try to strike up conversation and see what happens when their phones are in hand.

I’m pleased to announce that our young ones want to talk. I’ve had the most interesting conversations with young ones over so many subjects, from school, to bikes, to driving cars and

even some of my own past experiences. Each time I go away encouraged by our conversations, kicking myself for the many times I thought young ones didn’t want to talk.

I do believe we need to give them the benefit of the doubt. My age of 68 years didn’t seem to matter to them either.

The City of Delta experienced the heroic actions of A/Sgt. John Jasmins in February. While picking his children up from school he witnessed an assault taking place and intervened. His police training kicked in and he literally risked his own life to save another. He suffered significant injuries, as did the victim, and thankfully both survived.

This event unfolded in public and resulted in significant media coverage.

Delta police received well wishes for Jasmins from across Canada. There is absolutely no doubt that Jasmins is a hero for his brave actions. His recovery will take some time, but he will be back at work as soon as he is ready.

While these types of

situations result in significant attention — and rightfully so — there are daily heroic acts that take place amongst the ranks of our Delta police officers.

In fact, the vast majority of things we do go unnoticed, yet contribute to the quality of life for our residents.

Helping a woman leave a violent relationship or arresting a drug dealer that was distributing deadly fentanyl-laced drugs into our community are acts that prevent tragedies. They are not simple accomplishments, often these types of circumstances require hours and days of preparation and planning, most of which goes unnoticed by anyone.

An investigator who persists in the face of a serious crime seeking the truth and a resolution to a tragic circumstance has no doubt prevented further crimes. A traffic member who stands on the side of a highway, with cars speeding past him or her, is working to prevent serious motor vehicle accidents.

School liaison officers that work after hours with families to keep a teenager from making poor choices can change the trajectory of a life.

A/Sgt. John Jasmins This work changes people’s stories. When a person is not victimized by an assault, or is not injured in a car accident, no one will ever know. But we know the work we put into keeping our communities safe and that is one of the key reasons this career is so amazing. When we do our jobs well, we are unknowingly committing “upstream” heroic acts.

Just because they are never noticed or attributed, that doesn’t lessen their effect or value.

Indeed, the fact that such acts are unattributed makes them even nobler.

John Jasmins is a hero.

Period. However, the DPD officers doing great work every day in preventing crime and keeping us safe are also my heroes.

A made in Delta product recently helped save the life of an Edmonton hiker.

Nupoint Systems has developed a unique satellite camera that monitors remote environments. It takes regular photographs of remote areas and sends them back via satellite networks.

Hundreds of these systems are deployed across remote areas, where there is no cellular coverage, to monitor wildfires, snow and ice conditions, wildlife, natural resource infrastructure and more.

The hiker, accompanied by his dog, left Pinto Lake outside of Lake Louise on March 13 on what he expected to be a four-day hike. When he realized he was in trouble, he noticed the satellite camera and hoped it would transmit a message to a rescue team.

The distress signal, a photograph of an SOS stomped into the snow, was transmitted first to Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. As soon as it was recognized as a call for help on March 18, it was passed to the RCMP. Rocky Mountain House Search and Rescue and RCMP K

Division air services personnel were deployed and found the man and his dog in good health. Both were airlifted back to the trailhead staging area.

“We developed our Remote Viewer satellite camera systems just a few years ago, and we’re selling them across North America to environmentalists, government bodies, natural resource operators, law enforcement and owners of remote buildings,” said Wayne Carlson, president and CEO of Nupoint Systems. “We’re delighted that our technology was instrumental in saving the life of this Edmonton hiker and his dog.”

Carlson said what happened in this case is completely out of the normal application.

“That camera is there to monitor the environmental conditions at Pinto Lake. I believe this was an extremely fortuitous situation for the hiker,” he said.

“He must have noticed the camera and stamped out the SOS with the hope that the camera was operational.”

Nupoint is a small home-based office with a contract manufacturer in Langley that opened in 2011.

A former long-time Delta councillor says she hopes politics didn’t come into play in her not being selected to serve on civic advisory committees.

A 15-year Delta council veteran first elected in 1993, Krista Engelland responded to the city’s advertisement for residents interested in volunteering for a range of committees that provide guidance to council.

Engelland was a member of a number of civic committees during her five terms in office.

The 57-year-old applied to serve on three committees — parks, recreation and culture commission, mayor’s public safety and board of variance — but received rejection letters for each one.

A sweeping trend in health and wellness has recently set up shop in South Delta.

Spa Bleu opened its doors last fall on 56th Street to offer flotation therapy — a treatment to relax, de-stress and feel free from pain.

Owner Nikki Yang, a certified esthetician who has lived in South Delta for the past 12 years, suffered from chronic back pain for many years, trying everything she could to alleviate her pain.

“I tried everything — acupuncture, back therapy — and nothing seemed to work or if it did work, just provided me with temporary relief,” she said.

“Through my husband’s friend he went to a float therapy place in downtown Vancouver and he recommended it. I tried it and I felt great. For the first time I felt relief.”

It was following this experience that she decided she wanted to learn more about flotation therapy.

Floatation therapy is based on the research of Dr. John C. Lilly, a scientist who was interested in the effects of sensory deprivation.

Each of the float tanks contain 11 inches of water and 1,100 pounds of Epsom salt, which has been used for years as a treatment of aches, pains and skin ailments.

provides a weightless environment and with the combination of pitch darkness and silence, it takes people into a deep state of relaxation, releasing endorphins to rapidly eliminate fatigue and stress.

“I knew once I started trying this that this was something I wanted to bring to Tsawwassen,” she said. “This is still a bit of an unknown treatment, but as people learn about what we are and what we are about, they have been very impressed. We are not

your typical spa.”

Sara Shears, a local kinesiologist with a background in the fitness industry, has been working with Yang since Spa Bleu opened. She said educating people about the benefits of the therapy is key.

“Although this was created a few years ago, it is a therapy and treatment that is starting to become more mainstream,” Shears said.

“This is a take time out, self-care physical benefit, but also a mental benefit as well. It’s 90 minutes,

which might seem like a long time, but it really isn’t when you do this for self-care. This has so many benefits and we want people to understand that.”

Yang said she hopes more people in the community will see what flotation therapy is all about.

A 90-minute float costs $75, although the spa offers packages that reduce that per visit cost.

Pair of annual events next month to put Birds in Focus

For the eighth consecutive year, two popular Birds in Focus events will take place early next month in South Delta.

Organized and cosponsored by the Delta Naturalists Society, the Boundary Bay Park Association, the City of Delta and Metro Vancouver Parks, the events will be held on Saturday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre and on Sunday, April 14 at historic Cammidge House in Boundary Bay Regional Park.

The visual presentation evening on Saturday, April 6 is not only for photographers and bird watchers, but others who enjoy seeing spectacular

photographs presented by three talented and skilled photographers and naturalists.

The program begins with an opening reception and light refreshments, where attendees can tour the arts centre and see an array of works by local photographers and artists.

The main program starts at 7:30 p.m.

Featured speakers include Ron Long, who was a professional photographer at Simon Fraser University for 36 years, much of that time in the Biological Sciences Department. In retirement he travels regularly, photographing nature, and has worked for the last eight years to preserve one of his favourite wildflower

A passion for photography, music and working with people has turned into a labour of love for an award-winning Ladner photographer.

Dennis Bellia, owner of Dynamic Weddings & Events, recently won the Photographer of the Year award at the B.C. Wedding Awards at the Executive Hotel Vancouver Airport.

Bellia, who moved to Ladner 11 years ago with his wife Jennifer and children, said his story goes back to high school.

“It started in Grade 9 when I fell in love with photography and I wanted to pursue it, but back then it just wasn’t the right timing, so I turned to music instead,” he told the Optimist.

“Music became the passion for me and I started Dynamic DJ Service as a business after postsecondary. A few years later I started getting back into photography and it was probably about six or seven years ago that we re-branded into Dynamic Weddings & Events.”

His company now offers photography, videography, photo booth, DJ, event planning and day of coordination.

Bellia was among a list of 10 finalists for the award.

“We were asked to submit submissions of our work within the last year as well as reviews and client comments. We have more than 100 reviews and they are all five stars, so we have a terrific reputa-

Three years ago he was named Best Wedding DJ finalist at the B.C. Wedding Awards and Wedding Wire, which is the equivalent to TripAdvisor in the wedding industry, has presented an award to Bellia and the company the past seven years.

He said winning the Photographer of the Year award tops all of that.

“For one, it is such an honour, but there are so

many amazing photographers out there — so many amazing professionals and for us to be named the best is truly an honour for sure,” he said. “A true professional photographer — there is so much that goes into it. The constant education, upgrading equipment, the constant practice and always wanting to learn it is such a passion so for that to be recognized is just awesome. For us it’s all about people and relationships and capturing those moments of great expression.”

’90s pop culture knowledge will actually come in handy

Delta Gymnastics wants you to brush up on your ’90s pop culture knowledge, show off your trivia skills and have a fun time with your friends and/or family at its second annual Trivia Night at the Ladner Community Centre on Saturday, April 6.

“Whether you are a trivia master or this is your first time at a Trivia Night, this event promises lots of laugh out loud moments,” says Delta Gymnastics executive director Ana Arciniega. “Everyone should come prepared to put their knowledge to the test and warm up their dance moves as our DJ is awesome.”

The event is hosted by popular DJ Derek from Little H Entertainment.

All proceeds will go to helping Delta Gymnastics purchase specialized equipment and make upgrades to the gym.

“Our goal with this event is to strengthen the inner competitive spirit of our guests in a fun and engaging way,” said Arciniega. “This is a

Sidekick looking for quartet of women to complete ‘Foursome’ for final show

Sidekick Players Club will soon be auditioning its last play of the season, The Ladies Foursome, written

by Canadian playwright Norm Foster and directed

by Carroll Lefebvre.

The day after their friend Catherine’s funeral, Margot, Tate and Connie gather for a round of golf in honour of their recently departed fourth. At the golf course they are joined by another woman, an old friend of Catherine’s they’d never met.

Over the course of 18

holes, secrets and confessions unravel as the women discuss love, sex, children and everything in between. Foster wrote The Foursome that Sidekick produced several years ago that featured four men. The Ladies Foursome is one of Foster’s recent plays.

Cast requirements are four women, two in their 50s and two in their 40s. Production dates are June 12 to 22 at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre.

One looks at forecast in a glass half-full kind of way, while the other’s glass is definitely half-empty

Take the weather app.

A few years ago, I would not have known that “app” was a word. Today, I not only know what it means, I have also determined that where the weather app is concerned, there is a glass-is-half full variety, and a glass half empty one.

I happen to have the former, the husband, the latter. When it comes to his weather app, the glass is constantly draining.

“I wonder if I’ll be golfing this week,” he said gloomily, a couple of weeks back.

I whipped out my phone and checked out the forecast.

“Oh!” I said. “You’re wide open! Not a drop of rain expected, and the temps are looking good!”

Not one to immediately believe what my phone was telling me, the husband pulled out his own.

“What are you talking about?” he said. “It’s going to be brutally cold all week, and there may even be flurries on Thursday.”

Saviour Lutheran Church in Ladner is once again seeking to help the “garage-less” in the community.

The 57th Street church is hosting another Garageless Garage Sale on Saturday, April 13 from 9 a.m. to noon.

It’s the seventh time the church is making space available to neighbours so they can connect with one another to buy and sell useful stuff.

The early weeks of spring are an ideal time to clean out those closets, cupboards and sheds to do some purging.

“Nope,” he said. “We’re still lodged in the single digits.”

Not sure why this is so, not unless one of us is having vision difficulties and unable to correctly read the forecast, which is indeed a distinct possibility.

But who knows?

Perhaps the major shareholders of my weather app also sell barbecues and

patio chairs, while those behind the husband’s trade in snowmobiles and winter tires.

More often than not, however, the weather reality lies between what our apps are saying. No snow, no sun, but something in between.

Perhaps, then, we

should return to those long-ago days, long before we had apps, and before we even had cell phones.

We’d wake up each morning and look at the sky, then decide on our daily apparel. We’d grab the umbrella, not because of an app, but simply because it was raining.

Sufficient sleep remains vital component of a healthy life

Many adults lament that even if they were solid sleepers in their younger years, by the age of 50, their quality of sleep has unraveled.

Some cling to the wisdom that people simply do not need as much sleep as they get older.

Even though that is partly true, sufficient sleep is still a vital component of a healthy life.

The National Sleep Foundation recently updated its sleep recommendations per age group to include categories “may be appropriate” and “not recommended.”

Adults between the ages of 26 and 65 are advised to get seven to nine hours of sleep per evening.

However, six hours or 10 hours may also be acceptable. People over 65 need roughly seven to eight hours of sleep each night, though between five and six hours also may be fine.

• Consider white noise.

The sounds of the house or outdoors may be keeping you up. Many people find that the gentle hum of a fan or a white-noise machine with a calming sound effect makes it easier for them to doze off than complete quiet.

• Keep electronics out of the bedroom. It can be challenging to disconnect from electronics, but it is essential to falling asleep.

Even a back-lit text coming through in the wee hours can be enough illumination to disrupt sleep.

Exercising after 50 can help people live healthy well into retirement

In an ideal world, people young and old exercise each day. But as people age, finding time to work out is not so easy.

Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years.

But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled

But before beginning a new exercise regimen, those over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury: • Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone

with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise.

• Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so

choose low-intensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts.

• Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors.

When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident. Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path.

• Stay hydrated. The NIA notes many people lose their sense of thirst as they age. But just because you aren’t thirsty doesn’t mean you don’t need water.

Water regulates body temperature and lubricates the joints, thereby decreasing your risk of injury.

Hospice’s suicide support group offers safe place to grieve

Delta Hospice want residents to know they’re not alone.

If you are an adult who has had a loss due to suicide and want the sup-

port of others in similar circumstances, a new program, partially funded

by Delta Funeral Home, is now available.

port group is a complimentary program that will run Tuesdays from 1 to 3

Debra Wolinsky, bereavement counsellor and program manager at Delta Hospice, said there is a great need for the program.

“We know from our client population that we have here that there are some people who are bereaved due to suicide and their preference is to be with others who are bereaved for that same reason,” Wolinsky said.

“We offer other support groups here and sometimes those who are bereaved due to suicide attend there, however, we have gotten feedback they would prefer to be in a program with others in a like experience, so we want to fill that need.”

Ladner resident Marlyn Ferguson, who works for Valleyview Funeral Home in Surrey, which owns Delta Funeral Home, said it’s important for the group that the facilitator creates a place of safety.

“Participants have told me that attending the suicide support group was the safest place for them to tell their story,” said Ferguson. “We will be offering a facilitated group, and every week there will be a different topic to discuss and a time for people to reconnect to those restorative memories and not just how the person died or the events leading up to that suicide death.”

Wolinsky said there’s such a stigma attached to suicidal death that Delta Hospice wants to embrace people to come in and talk about the difficult topic.

“Talking about death is difficult enough. Talking about suicide takes it to another level, so we really want people to embrace their healing journey,” she said.

Marika Lyszczyk is a baseball trailblazer and she is far from done.

The Tsawwassen teen is poised to become the first female to play in the B.C. Premier Baseball League this coming season and the ultimate goal is to earn an opportunity to play for a men’s collegiate team south of the border.

The Grade 12 South Delta Secondary student has spent the last five years in the Whalley Chiefs organization after opting for baseball over softball when she was in Grade 8.

“It had just become too much,” recalled Lyszczyk of the juggling act. I like to pitch and that’s where the two sports are just so different. I just enjoyed the baseball environment more and I happened to be better at it too.”

Along the way, Lyszczyk had been a fixture with the Team BC program that annually competes at the national age group championship. Last season she joined Team Canada Prospects and will be playing for them again at this summer’s 2019 Nationals. A good showing there could earn the catcher/pitcher a spot on the Canadian senior team that competes every two years at the Women’s World Cup of Baseball. Canada was third last year behind

Japan and Chinese Taipei.

She got the unique opportunity to enhance her development by being one of eight Canadian players selected for the inaugural Major League Baseball GRIT. The week-long camp featured 60 U18 female players that got to play games at Globe Life Park — home of the Texas Rangers — and train at the Rangers Youth Academy located in Arlington.

“It was like a super unreal experience getting to work with those coaches and getting to play at Globe Life Park,” said Lyszczyk who found out weeks earlier she had been selected for the all-expenses paid camp. “Just getting to play on the same stadium as MLB players and being the first on the Globe Life field other than them.

“I definitely learned a lot of little things that helps push my game a little farther. Just getting to work with two national team catchers was amazing, plus I got to do a little bit of pitching as well.”

Lyszczyk batted .500 and her strong play at the camp resulted in her being one of three girls that will receive free promotion by a college recruiting company.

She has enrolled into Douglas College’s Therapeutic Recreation Program and will tryout out for the men’s baseball team if there is no opportunity in the US. The focus now is making the most of her final season with

the Chiefs before re-joining Team Canada Prospects.

“A lot of people said I couldn’t do it and there have been some doubters along the way,” said Lyszczyk of her PBL breakthrough.

“It was tough in my first year where now I have been playing with many of my teammates for five years. They are like my brothers and know I am here to stay. It’s nice to pave the way for other girls.

“As far as pitching, a lot of guys show off where I’m just trying to get the job done. They are throwing as hard as they can where I am just trying to hit my spots. I go in there to throw strikes. I want them to hit the ball and let my teammates help me out. (Laughing) a lot try to swing out of their shoes.”

Lyszczyk admits her biggest challenge is trying to consistently hit the best 16-to-18-yearold male pitchers in the province. It’s a part of the game she continues to work on the most but it does help her offensive numbers when she switches over to women’s tournaments.

Lyszczyk isn’t ruling out turning her attention back to softball and following a development path that many female baseball players have, including UBC’s Claire Eccles who has pitched the past two seasons for the Victoria HarbourCats minor pro men’s team.

“I’m taking (baseball only) as far as I can go until someone tells me otherwise,” she smiled.

Delta Deas Rowing Club took their talent inside for a fantastic showing at Beat the Beast.

The indoor rowing competition is held annually at St. George’s School in Vancouver. Beat the Beast had fairly humble beginnings with six rowing machines that gave distance only — unlike the machines of today which also provide rate and effort. It is now one of the biggest indoor rowing competitions on the west coast, attracting many athletes including national team rowers.

The one and only DDRC master to enter — Richard Stout — came in first in his category.

It was the juniors who stole the show —

coming away with six first place finishes, three second place and a trio of thirds. Not a single junior finished worse than fourth.

Of note, Danica Vangsgaard came first in U19 women with the fastest time in Canada. Caitlin Lawrence also was first in the U19 open women category with a Canadian fastest time.

Best of all was the junior women team relay event. Hana Anderson, Sophie Gower, Rachel Mehling and Ehren Patterson (from Deep Cove) came first in their event with a new world record time.

They smashed the old mark by 30 seconds.

John was a kind, sensitive man who charmed everyone with his big brown eyes and his magnificent smile. He grew up and went to school in Richmond and became a fisherman just like his grandfather and father.

Denis was born in Cadillac, Quebec, May 3rd 1951.

He graduated high school in the Armed Forces in 1974. He went on to serve 28 years in the Navy, becoming a PO1 (Petty Officer First Class). Then worked for the BC Ferries for 15 years as a deckhand.

His hobbies include reading books, connecting with his friends on Facebook, playing pool, spending time with his children, flying his kite, helping his neighbors, decorating his window, cooking, riding his bike, keeping in contact with family, and talking off everyone’s ears.
