It’s frustrating and disappointing.

That’s what Adam Mills told the Optimist, saying Four Winds Brewing Company is considering its options following Delta council’s rejection of a proposal to build a craft brewery and 200-seat restaurant in the commercial component of the Southlands development.

The proposal would have seen the brewery and eatery housed in a 30,000-square-foot building on the Tsawwassen property. It would have contained the brewing and bottling components of the operation, while the warehousing and distribution would have been handled at an industrial location elsewhere.

Mills, the sales and marketing director at Four Winds, said the 4-3 council vote came as a surprise.

“It was a bit of a shock and we kind of expected it to work out. We put so much energy, time and investment into it. We are definitely going to look at our options and work with Century Group and the City of Delta to see if there’s a way we can come

“We also have to weigh options whether or not the Southlands is the right fit for us because, certainly, a production facility is what we do need, but we also want to do a restaurant.

We would like to have them combined, if possible,” said Mills.

The application, which had been the subject of a public hearing last month, was defeated with Mayor George Harvie casting the deciding vote, say-

ing the proposed uses were not consistent with the original vision for the Southlands.

Mills said it’s frustrating the mayor’s sentiment wasn’t conveyed earlier, before the application had gone all the way to a public hearing.

Noting the entire proposal, including brewery, would have been approximately 27,000 square feet, roughly the size of Thrifty Foods in Tsawwassen, a company Facebook post states the rejection is a

major setback.

“The current zoning will allow a brewpub in Southlands. Although we will consider this option, a full craft brewing facility with an attached restaurant is our main priority.

We want nothing more than to stay in Delta and share in the unique nature of the Southlands project.

However, we need to do what is best for our business, our 45 employees and their families by considering all our options,” the post reads.

A local resident has started an online petition in the hope Delta council will reconsider its rejection of the Four Winds proposal.

“We think that Delta City Council made the wrong decision. We want the craft brewery and restaurant to be approved as is, and think that Four Winds will help to anchor this community and provide a much-needed social gathering space,” wrote Dan Patching on change.org.

As of yesterday morning, the online petition had more than 5,200 signatures.

Century Group president Sean Hodgins said he would meet with Four Winds, but is not sure of the next step.

Coun. Dylan Kruger, who voted in favour of the project, reiterated his support for the company, saying, “I remain hopeful that working with the city, we can still find a way to get to yes on this project.

We need to keep this great local company in Delta.”

Starvation determined as cause of mass duck death SANDOR GYARMATI

The mysterious mass death of ducks in Tsawwassen has been attributed to malnutrition.

In late February, 31 ducks were found dead in a man-made pond in front of the Tsatsu Shores condo complex on the Tsawwassen First Nation, a disturbing case that had residents concerned poisoning might have been the cause.

Environment and

Climate Change Canada officers retrieved the dead birds on Feb. 26 and conducted an investigation.

In a statement to the Optimist last week, a spokesperson with Environment and Climate Change Canada stated, “As it is unusual for 30 dead birds to be found in the same time/location, carcasses were examined to determine cause of death, which was determined to be starvation. Initial suspicion was that the birds may have been poisoned,

perhaps through contact with contaminated water.

However, veterinary pathologists determined that the loss of body condition was severe enough to account for death of the birds.

“Water samples for toxicology testing were conducted. The reason why these birds died of starvation could not be confirmed. There is no concrete evidence of environmental contamination.”

First Nation issued a news release that stated Environment and Climate Change Canada did necropsies on six of the ducks.

“ECCC conducted extensive water testing, finding no hazardous substances. Two compounds were detected in the form of vegetable oil fats, which are not harmful to waterfowl. As such, scientists have determined the birds died of natural causes due to lack of nutrition, possibly exacerbated by unusually poor weather in

February.”

Tsatsu Shores resident Jan Rutledge told the Optimist she received a letter from a wildlife officer stating there was no definitive reason for the deaths, other than the birds were found to be emaciated, and there was nothing unusual found in the water.

“Basically, we didn’t learn anything other than they were emaciated. So many dying in one little area to me is still a mystery,” she said.

Thrifty Foods in Tsawwassen is making the store more inclusive for those with autism.

Starting this Sunday from 6 to 7 p.m., and taking place on a bi-weekly basis, the Town Centre Mall supermarket is creating what it’s calling a sensory friendly shopping hour.

Store lighting will be reduced, overhead music will be shut off, announcements and intercoms will be delayed, shopping cart collection will cease and store department noises will be kept to a minimum.

Staff will also be instructed to keep any talking to a whisper.

“This started in Sobeys Atlantic and manifested this way. Willowbrook Safeway did this about a month ago and then the company threw the idea out and I thought it would be a great idea,” said store manager Ryan Bancroft.

“We’ve tested the lights, the cash registers and I can’t see how this can’t

Bancroft said two of the store’s employees are autistic.

“Given that, they manage to work under the current conditions, which is a tribute to them, so if we can support them or family members we want to do that,” he said. “This just makes getting out into the public a little easier. I believe this is going to be a fantastic thing for the area.

It’s a matter of time before other businesses do this.

Our staff is in full support and are excited to try this.”

Front end manager Michelle Olson points out that it’s just not those with autism that will benefit from the sensory friendly shopping hour.

“I think people are going to like the quiet.

Everywhere you go you are bombarded by the music, lights, so it gives people another option to shop during this time,” she said.

Heart of gold missing as concert tickets are fake South Delta Crime Beat

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:

TSAWWASSEN

• April 14, 1:12 a.m., 1100-block of 51st Street: Complainant reported a noise complaint (loud talking) emanating from the neighbourhood. Police attended and located a group of adolescents.

Majority of the youth on scene dispersed upon police arrival. Those that remained advised police they would remain quiet for the remainder of the night.

• April 14, 7:48 a.m., 1400-block of 53A Street: Police were dispatched to a reported aggressive staring call. Complainant advised police that a group of 15- to 18-year-old males were “up to no good.” He stated when he drove by them, they looked very aggressively at him. Police conducted area patrols as per complainant’s request, but the group was gone from the area. No offence observed.

• April 14, 4:39 p.m., 800-block of Boundary Bay Road: Complainant called police reporting that a vehicle was driving erratically and crossing over the double solid line in attempt to pass.

A voicemail was left for the company the vehicle belongs to and warning letter issued advising the registered owner of the incident. Complainant advised by phone of follow up.

• April 15, 8:25 a.m.,

4700-block of Nulelum Way: Complainant reported having purchased fake concert tickets on Craigslist. Complainant had purchased two Neil Young concert tickets for $300 via e-transfer and posted about the purchase on Facebook. A friend commented that he had tickets for the same seats. Complainant communicated with the seller via text and e-mail only.

Craigslist queries show the same ad re-posting.

Complainant advised to contact Craigslist to have the post taken down and advise of scam.

• April 15, 6:11 p.m., 5600-block of Timbervalley Road: Police received an abandoned 911 call from a residence.

The caller stayed on the line and explained he tried to call 411 to speak with his telephone provider but dialed 911 in error. Police attended the caller’s residence and confirmed no emergency.

• April 20, 8:37 p.m., 1000-block of 56A Street: Resident was walking when she observed a small dog, with no collar, that appeared lost and without an owner. Complainant checked with several residents in the area and none of them recognized the dog. Police attended and transported the dog to Delta Community Animal Shelter.

LADNER

• April 14, 11:05 a.m., 4800-block of Central Avenue: Complainant reported that her neighbour who lives directly behind her home was attempting to cut down a tree. Police called the complainant who then reported that she was mistaken and that her neighbour was only pruning the shrubs. Complainant advised she did not require police attendance. Complainant initially called police because bylaw department was closed.

• April 15, 7100block of Progress Way: Complainant reported

a theft from two of his vehicles that were parked on his business property. The theft occurred between April 13 and April 15. Value of batteries and exhaust components from trucks and fork lifts approximately $4,000.

• April 15, 9:59 a.m.

5500-block of Admiral Way: Complainant reported seeing a red Volvo speeding in the neighbourhood. Police followed up with the driver and advised him to moderate his speeds through the neighbourhood and school zones.

The driver agreed to do so.

Complainant was immediately advised of police actions.

• April 16, 1:48 p.m., 7000-block of Highway 17: Police officer noted a vehicle speeding excessively. The officer followed the car, noting a radar lock speed of 132 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. When stopped the driver provided a Class 7 licence (new driver). The driver was served a violation ticket for excessive speed and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.

• April 17, 5:47 p.m., 5000 -block of 47th Avenue: Complainant reported a male sleeping in the bathroom at Memorial Park. Police facilitated a new temporary sleeping arrangement and in discussions learned the male was willing to accept assistance and would like permanent housing. District liaison officer will assist him to begin housing planning.

• April 17, 11:44 p.m., 5800-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Police stopped a vehicle to check for sobriety. The driver admitted to having two beers and police could detect a distinct odour of liquor. Police served the driver with a notice of driving prohibition and notice of impoundment.

• April 19, 9:48 a.m., 5400-block of River Road: Complainant reported that his three 20L jerry cans were stolen from his vehicle. Jerry cans not secured and in view.

The Delta School District can do even more to combat racism, a local parent told the board of education.

Kate Henderson was one of several speakers at the school board’s budget input meeting last Tuesday, saying the district needs to better equip educators when it comes to racism.

“I don’t think it’s been lost on anyone in here, especially what’s been happening in Ladner.

My understanding of the budget is that there isn’t necessarily a position for somebody who can better help in this area in terms of anti-oppression and anti-racism education,” said Henderson.

Henderson said despite anti-racism forums in Delta, she’s concerned educators need help in dealing with the issue appropriately.

“I find that when it comes to anti-racist education, there are a lot of different ways going about it and I particularly feel as

Laura Dixon noted a motion put forward at the B.C. School Trustees Association, which she believes will pass, would have the association call on the province to amend and strengthen its antiracism strategy.

Speaker Rhiannon Bennett, a former Delta school trustee, agreed with Henderson’s points.

Noting a lot of students are not being served in Delta with the provincial dollars geared toward Indigenous students, Bennett also talked about the need to have more First Nations staff.

ow, I didn’t think I’d hear that one.

Like any politician, our new mayor has had his decisions, initiatives and comments dissected as many of his constituents have offered their views, on social media in particular, on what has been a busy first six months in office. The commentary has been varied, but a sentiment that’s been gaining traction in the last couple of weeks is one I never thought I’d encounter: George Harvie is anti-development and anti-business.

This has been brought about primarily by Harvie casting the deciding vote to defeat Four Winds’ breweryrestaurant proposal for the Southlands, a project that’s finding a great deal of public support in the wake of its narrow rejection by Delta council. It’s also spread to commentary on the Town Centre Mall redevelopment plan, with supporters worried the mayor will drive more business out of town by kyboshing another worthy Century Group undertaking.

Such discourse is definitely ironic given the worry about Harvie during last fall’s election campaign was that he would be too development friendly, that his council would approve projects that would change the character of communities, forever ruining our small town vibe. There was certainly a basis for such fears as Harvie’s Achieving for Delta slate received a handful of five-figure donations before campaign finance rules changed in the fall of 2017, all of which came from wellheeled property developers.

So who would have thought that six months after the election Harvie would be drawing criticism for rejecting a development proposal and be labeled as anti-business?

The Four Winds application has managed to do just that. It’s also created a divide in the community, with pretty much everyone in agreement that a great company that brews awardwinning beer has come up with a creative proposal, but far less consensus on whether the Southlands is the right spot for it.

Given the level of support, it’s hard not to envision some sort of revised application resurfacing that’s tweaked just enough that it ends up meeting with Delta council’s approval.

After all, Harvie has a pro-development reputation he needs to protect.

Cluster housing in the Big Easy could meet this region’s needs

I

just did an eight-day bucket-list Amtrak train trip called “Blues and the Bayou” that transited from Chicago via Memphis onto New Orleans and back to Chicago. Train travel, like air travel, has gone downhill.

I was looking forward to some elegant cuisine in the dining car and camaraderie with fellow passengers in the bar/club car, which I enjoyed 10 years ago. On this trip there was only a lounge car with hard plastic seats and a snack bar with pre-packaged, over-priced sandwiches, pop, canned beer or wine.

However, New Orleans, aka NOLA, is fabulous, delicious, colourful and a bit naughty.

The French colonial Haitians, Creole (mixed-race) and Cajuns (Acadians) have greatly impacted the NOLA culture. The Cajuns were French-Catholics who originally settled in Nova Scotia. After being banished for refusing to convert to Protestantism, they resettled in Louisiana.

Three hundred years of French, Spanish, Caribbean, West African and American influences make NOLA a unique melting pot of cultures. The Southern dialects are fast, funny and full of endearments like “sweet gramma” and “honey darlin.” The Big Easy is all about music, food, history and architecture. Tip: It’s best to leave political correctness at home and just go with the flow.

charmingly reflect this myriad of cultures. I was most intrigued with the story of Jean Lafitte and the housing he built for the service workers and labourers back in the day. He was an entrepreneur and, depending on your point of view, was known as a pirate or a hero — kind of a French Robin Hood. He needed workers to build his empire and they needed somewhere affordable to live.

Using some of his bounty Lafitte purchased a large farm in the French Quarter. Louisiana taxed property based on the land size and how many rooms were in a house, so Lafitte cleverly subdivided his farm into long, narrow lots 20 feet wide by 80 feet long. He constructed a variety of narrow houses 16 feet by 70 feet called “shotgun” houses, so named because you could shoot a gun from the front porch through to the back porch, verifying the house to have only one room.

Partition walls separated bedrooms from shared living/dining/ kitchen areas. Some houses were doubled side-by-side or stacked above. These were affordable rentals and aided in the integration and socialization of this diverse population.

Today this is called “cluster housing” where people live more cooperatively, sharing common areas but still having private quarters. Thankfully, we aren’t taxed by the number of rooms, but we are by square footage. For people in the low to middle incomes, these dorm-style rentals are in high demand. They can live more socially, cheaper, greener and avoid long commutes from the burbs.

Well-designed cluster housing could meet our demand for affordable rentals, including helping the homeless and lower income adults such as seniors, young people starting out and new immigrants. It could also be the housing continuum’s missing link between independent living and assisted living by providing minimal support, like a paid house-mother.

Whether he was a pirate or a prodigy, we could learn from Jean Lafitte. As to visiting New Orleans… a big yes!

Qualtrough hasn’t failed in her duty to speak up for Delta

Editor: Re: Loyalty has price, Murphy’s Law, April 11 The editorial (along with the cartoon next to it) clearly implies that MP Carla Qualtrough’s backing of the prime minister is purely out of loyalty to him and the Liberal Party, which further implies that she doesn’t really mean what she has said regarding the SNC-Lavalin issue raised by Jody WilsonRaybould, and extended

by Jane Philpott; put more bluntly, the implication is that she is lying.

As well, it is implied, or assumed, that Qualtrough has not spoken on behalf of Delta. I don’t know how this conclusion is drawn in this case: What is Delta’s position? Does Delta have one unanimous position?

Does Ted Murphy know what she said in cabinet and caucus?

Implied throughout so much of the discussion about this issue is the assumption that

Wilson-Raybould and Philpott are right in their opinion on the appropriateness of the discussions between the former attorney general and other government-related persons. (As important as it is for us to have women and Indigenous people in Parliament, those demographic characteristics do not guarantee the individuals are always right; nor is the first position to be heard on an issue necessarily the right one.)

This is an easy position to take if one is in general opposition to the Liberal government: in politics proof or facts don’t really have to be adhered to in taking positions. On the other side, knee-jerk supporters of the Liberals can jump to the alternative position. For the rest of us, we can only learn as much as we can and try to draw our own conclusions, or accept a position of no conclusion.

It seems to me that if

there was absolute wrongdoing in a legal sense here, there should and would be an RCMP investigation.

But even Wilson-Raybould has said there was no law broken.

There is also the complication in our government set-up in which the attorney general is also the minister of justice and is part of the cabinet, taking part and being subject to discussions and debates therein. Where is the line to be drawn in questions of appropriateness in this kind of situation?

Murphy made three sweeping generalizations about former Delta politicians who did and did not “stand up” for Delta and South Delta. In this case, I don’t see the evidence of Qualtrough failing to speak up for Delta in opposition to the Liberal government.

That leaves me to question the motivation of the editorial.

Put brewery next to casino Editor: I attended the public hearing on the Four Winds proposal to relocate to Southlands Village. Those speaking in favour of the proposal advanced two reasons: the owners of Four Winds are good citizens and their beer wins many awards.

Mayor George Harvie quite correctly pointed out in his remarks at the subsequent Delta council meeting where the proposal was defeated that good citizenship and a worthy product are not reasons to grant zoning variances. If that were so, variances could be bought.

I would think a plaque or perhaps naming rights to a small park might be a more appropriate form of recognition.

But now Four Winds is considering its options, which could mean leaving Delta entirely. Some resi-

dents can be forgiven for concluding that threatening relocation of the brewery, along with its jobs and tax revenues, a few weeks after having the proposal defeated is not a demonstration of exemplary citizenship.

Coun. Dylan Kruger, a keen supporter of the Four Winds Southlands proposal, who is obviously inclined to respond to Four Winds’ threat, adds that he hopes the city can work with the brewery to “redevelop the proposal into something that can be approved.”

Leaving aside the fact the long-suffering, exhausted residents of Boundary Bay are tired of “redeveloped” Southlands proposals, let’s remind Kruger why the proposal was defeated. It sought to site an industrial manufacturing facility in a structure the size of a super-

market, only higher, on a mixed use residential/ commercial site, which was promised to consist only of small shops and services at street level with affordable living units in two storeys above.

No amount of “redevelopment” will alter the fact that an industrial brewing and bottling plant in an area zoned industrial is seeking to expand its existing production capacity in Tilbury by relocating to a quiet residential neighbourhood, contrary to the developer’s promises given after 40 years of contentious efforts to develop the agricultural area of the Southlands.

I have a suggestion for Kruger: Put the brewery and restaurant beside the new casino. They deserve each other. Leave the residents of Boundary Bay in peace.

Opportunity to do right thing for Four Winds

Editor: The Four Winds project is widely supported and anticipated here in Tsawwassen, and is a fantastic anchor to Southlands from a highly respected local family business.

It’s rejection by Delta council was very disappointing and inconsistent with Delta’s approvals of other large projects requiring OCP changes.

The Change.org petition started by Dan Patching demanding Delta council alter its decision has

received over 5,000 signatures in only a few days.

One wonders if Mayor George Harvie and councillors Dan Copeland, Jeannie Kanakos and Bruce McDonald are surprised to discover how out of touch they are with the South Delta community and their constituents in this?

A bigger question is whether they have the political courage and accountability to rectify their mistake? Delta’s procedures bylaw allows that any one of those voting

This is a test, really. Is this council equipped to deal with the communication and political reality of today’s Delta or is it stuck — like its community development policies and vision — in a time that has clearly passed?

Will this mayor and these councillors do the right thing for South Delta on April 29?

A major road project is going to get underway in Tsawwassen.

Delta council recently approved awarding a $4.1-million contract for 8A Avenue roadway and

It’s time for a ‘Short’ goodbye

A rewarding and lifechanging career comes to an end for Rev. Jim Short this Sunday.

After 18 years at Ladner United Church, Short will officiate his last service, which will mark 37 years since he was ordained and 40 years since he started minister’s training.

“When you start your master’s degree, you automatically start some internships, so I’ve done prison chaplaincy, institutional chaplaincy, hospital chaplaincy, did training in a First Nations community, the military work, so I’ve had a pretty broad span of work,” Short said in reminiscing about his career with the Optimist.

He said it’s going to be a relatively normal Sunday — several people have been invited to say a few words and there will be a lunch afterwards — but he also suspects it will be quite emotional.

“I’ll wake up the next day and move into the first week of my semi-retirement and think, wow, I’ll miss having an office and miss preaching sermons, so it’s something I’m excited about, but dreading a bit too.”

Short and his wife Kathy Bone and family moved to South Delta from Vancouver Island to take the job at Ladner United in 2001.

“We were ready to move. Kathy and I had both worked together at the Duncan church and

we decided it was time to leave. I started applying for jobs. We were planning to come to the mainland, partly because we wanted our then young children to have some more opportunities.

“Kathy had been hired at the Vancouver School of Theology to work in their Chalmers Institute, so she was moving into that area of ministry and I had applied for various churches in the Lower Mainland and this was the one that offered me the job.”

Short started in August of 2001, but it wasn’t until that fateful day the following month when he really started to feel a part of the community and the impact he could have on it.

“One of the first things I did apart from lead worship was open up the sanctuary in September during the 911 attacks,” he recalled. “We opened for a vigil the night after.

I remember going up to visit then mayor Lois Jackson and suggested we do something for the municipal staff because nothing like 911 had ever happened and it obviously impacted people who worked for the government, so we had a memorial gathering in council chambers for any of the municipal staff. I remember that as my first introduction to the larger community and city council.”

Short said reaching out to the wider community was a mandate he was given, adding he’s proud of

He was named Delta’s Citizen of the Year in 2015 by the Delta Chamber of Commerce.

“When I was hired here by the hiring committee, one of the things they said to me was that they wanted a stronger community profile; they wanted to be

connected to the larger community and respond to the larger needs of the community.”

He said that vision has driven the work that’s been done over the last 18 years on a variety of fronts, including the establishment of Delta’s only extreme weather shelter.

“Every community needs a leader, but leaders don’t do everything on their own, they only do that when they have people who are willing to work on these projects.

The visions for all of these things, like the shelter, didn’t come from me, they came from the community and from conversations from the members who said our church can do that.”

He was instrumental in the large-scale renovation of the 48th Avenue church five years ago that had the aim of creating space to be shared with the community.

Bone said Ladner United holds a special place in their hearts.

“There is something special here for Jim. Jim can be himself here. Can I keep my coffee on the pulpit? Can I keep my office messy? Can I offer a study group in something that I heard about, but it’s not their traditional study group? This congregation has said sure. Jim wants a garage sale, let’s have a garage sale. Jim has been able to relax into himself and they have relaxed along with him.”

A military chaplain with the Canadian Army Reserve for 26 years, Short has helped train, screen and counsel Canadian soldiers getting ready to deploy into a war zone. He also helped returning soldiers acclimatize back into day-to-day life and has delivered the devastating news to families who have lost a loved one.

In 2008, Short was granted a leave from Ladner United and was one of thousands of Canadian Forces members deployed to Afghanistan.

He spent eight months on the front lines of the conflict.

“I would say that I had the most support here for my military work,” he said.

“I had support in other places, but people here supported that as part of their ministry. To let your one full-time employee be gone for 17 months to train and deploy overseas is a big ask for any organization.”

Short said the decision to retire has been difficult.

“It just feels like it’s the right time. I think our work is done here. But’s it’s been hard to say that to people. The hardest thing is leaving the people.

Myself as a person, us as a family, we are all really intertwined. We are all like a family.”

But as one door closes another one will soon open as Short is scheduled to begin a part-time position as chaplain for the Delta police and fire departments in August.

He said he welcomes the opportunity to respond to the spiritual needs of first responders and their families.

“I’m looking forward to this new challenge. I’m ready for retirement, but I’m not ready to be fully retired. I’m gratified and appreciated in the trust that those organizations have put in me to be a part of their teams.”

Grady is a four year old Chihuahua mix and one of the sweetest guys you’ll ever meet! He’s quiet and laid back, but still has lots of attitude. His favorite activities are cuddling and howling with you!

Grady has had 17 teeth removed, and has the smile to prove it! He loves food and water- we have started watering down his food to make it easier with his lack of teeth! Grady is a great little walker on leash and is house trained. Short walks suite him just fine and he is crate trained and perfectly content going for a snooze when left alone. This guy is more of a people person than a dog person, and he prefers adults and teens over young children. Other dogs would be fine with a proper introduction. Grady has a low platelet medical issue, which requires daily medication and regular vet check ups and blood work. More info can be explained to anyone interested this awesome guy. Close to 200 Delta youth took to the basketball court at North Delta Secondary in a successful three-on-three tournament hosted by the Delta Police Foundation.

The tournament, which has grown into a two-day event, is helping bridge the gap between the police and youth in positive ways.

When Tru was refused the right to attend Ladner’s Sacred Heart School as a girl, the Wilsons filed a human rights complaint against the school and the Catholic Independent Schools of the Vancouver Archdiocese for not supporting her gender identity.

In response, the Catholic School Board became one of the first in North America to develop a policy to support gender expression in 2014.

“Yes, this was an important part of my life when I supported and fought for Tru in her transition, but my passion for this subject started further back for me, when I chose to write

I grew up in a drug and alcohol addicted family, and after my father went to jail for trafficking narcotics, I left home to go to college and built a new life for myself, knowing that I wanted my own kids to have the love and support I never did.”

Since the first G Day launched in 2014, more than 1,300 girls and 700 adults have attended across five Canadian cities.

Other speakers at the G Day event include former broadcaster Tamara Taggart, who is now the Liberal nominee in Vancouver-Kingsway, and Jocelyn MacDougall, community convener, activist and singer.

The fundraiser in support of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. takes place at Delta Secondary on Sunday, May 5 at 10 a.m.

The event provides an opportunity to honour people who have been touched by dementia, while fundraising to support those living with the disease.

Each of the 21 events across B.C. on May 5 is dedicated to an honouree, an individual or group affected by dementia or who has contributed to the lives of people living with the disease.

Ladner dancer Francesca Frewer is set to take the stage during International Dance Day this weekend with her latest original piece.

Along with partner Erika Mitsuhashi, Frewer will present Dust, a thoughtprovoking contemporary dance solo that incorporates live sound, new media and striking designs to investigate themes of volatility, change, decay and the unbound.

Inspired by the poetry of Anne Carson, Dust uses movement, text and powerful visual effects to reveal the gradual undoing of the performance space, and of the performer herself.

Performances will be held on Sunday, April 28 and Monday, April 29 at

6 p.m. at the Scotiabank Dance Centre (677 Davie St., Vancouver). Admission is free.

“I’ve been working on this piece with my collaborator, Erika Mitsuhashi, for the past year now. Our initial inspiration for the solo came from an interest in trying to embody wildness or the uncanny,” said Frewer.

“We’re interested in ideas around decay, permanence and the irreversible, and we’re trying to incorporate these themes into the piece in different ways. It’s been really exciting working with the different mediums, and trying to integrate them all so that each part feels essential to the whole.”

The Langley Ukulele Ensemble will be in Ladner this weekend for a show at the McKee Seniors Recreation Centre.

The performance is set for Sunday, April 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. Admission is by donation with all proceeds going to support the group.

In its 37th year, the Langley Ukulele Ensemble continues to enrich lives through music. Performing a wide repertoire, from classical and rock to jazz

and pop, the ensemble plays music for all ages to enjoy.

The ensemble is also preparing to release its third studio album under Paul Luongo’s musical direction in October. In anticipation of the new album, titled One Love, One Heart, the ensemble is learning various easy listening and upbeat songs.

Upcoming public performances will give audiences opportunities to hear samples of the

new arrangements while also helping support the ensemble’s ability to record and produce the album.

The ensemble will be in Hawaii this July to perform at the Sheraton Waikiki in celebration of its 25th annual tour.

ElderCollege loves a mystery

ElderCollege Delta delves into one of the world’s great murder mysteries with a special presentation titled Jack the Ripper and the Royal Family: Murder and Myth.

Dr. Simon Devereaux, an associate professor of history at the University of Victoria, will lead the special presentation on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to noon at Cedar Park Church in Ladner.

Jack the Ripper is the most infamous murderer

in modern history. Never captured, his identity is one of England’s most well-known mysteries.

There are theories linking his crimes to the highest level of government and even the British Royal Family.

For more than 40 years, many people have believed Jack the Ripper was either a member of the Royal Family or someone acting at its behest or at least in its interest.

Devereaux will explain

how that theory developed and even stranger versions.

The presentation is complimentary to current members. Nonmembers are invited to attend by taking out a $10 ElderCollege Delta membership.

Don’t let dry, dehydrated skin make wrinkles appear worse

Dehydrated skin is among the many causes of facial wrinkling, which also can be caused by smoking, environmental factors and UV exposure.

Aging skin doesn’t produce as much collagen and elastin, which allows skin to spring back into place as it once did.

Conditions like dry, dehydrated skin may make wrinkles appear worse.

Treating dehydration and dryness may reduce wrinkles and refresh dry skin, giving it a more youthful appearance.

Those who want to treat dry, dehydrated skin must understand the difference between hydration and moisturizing as it applies to skincare. According to Annemarie Gianni, a skincare aesthetician and creator of Annemarie Skin Care, hydrating skin means increasing its water content by increasing the amount of water contained in skin cells.

Refreshing dry skin can give it a more youthful appearance.

Moisturizing skin involves applying a lubricant that mimics naturally produced lipids and oils in the skin that will protect and soothe.

Hydration and moisturizing often work hand-inhand.

In addition to drinking plenty of water to hydrate the skin from the inside out, here are some additional methods to maximize hydration and

moisturize skin.

• Take warm showers as hot water can strip the natural lipids from skin and cause dryness.

• Avoid too many alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic drinks are diuretics that can cause the body to lose water, advises WebMD. • Use a humidifier indoors to amp up the moisture level in the air.

• Enjoy water-rich foods, like watermelon, cucumber, grapes and other succulent fruits and vegetables.

• Drink the recommended amount of water per day, and limit your consumption of caffeinated and sugary beverages.

• Work out to improve blood flow and oxygenation in the skin.

• Try a facial essence.

Empty nest syndrome is real, but there are many ways to move past the mixed emotions synonymous with this phenomenon. toddlers or school-aged.

But children will someday grow up and move out, and the emotions that resonate when that day comes can be overwhelming.

Many parents feel a sense of sadness and loss when their last child leaves the family home.

Referred to as “empty nest syndrome,” these feelings are not officially labeled as a clinical mental health issue, but they are very real for many people.

While parents encourage their children to become independent and branch out in their own lives, not every parent can cope with an empty nest.

• Redefine yourself.

The experts at Psychology Today suggest finding new roles and interests to explore, or spend more time exploring existing hobbies. • Reconnect with your partner. Recall the years before you had children when it was only the two of you and devote time to making more memories as a couple. Plan date nights, go to sporting events, attend a summer concert or pursue other shared interests.

Wicks taking his career to Alaska South Delta forward getting ready for NCAA level after 3 seasons in Merritt MARK BOOTH

Nick Wicks is taking his hockey career north.

The 20-year-old forward from South Delta is headed to the NCAA Division One level next fall at the University of AlaskaAnchorage. Wicks agreed to a scholarship offer last summer then proceeded to make the most of his final season in the B.C. Hockey League, producing a career-high 59 points, including 18 goals, while captaining the Merritt Centennials.

The Seawolves program has been a strong recruiting presence in the BCHL with a dozen grads on their roster last season.

Among them is Wicks’ former Merritt teammate Zach Court who is coming off his freshman campaign.

“I went up there for a couple of days last summer which gave me a chance to get to know the coaching staff. There were also still some players up there so I got a feel of that environment too,” said the South Delta Secondary graduate. “I felt comfortable being there and I also liked the coaches’ approach to everything.”

The Seawolves are part of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association which includes Minnesota State, Northern Michigan, Bowling Green, Lake Superior State, Bemidji State, Michigan Tech, Alabama Huntsville and Ferris State. Besides facing state rival Alaska Fairbanks, it means flying for away games which is a sharp contrast to the bus trips in the BCHL. “It’s going to be a little bit of a change, almost a professional atmosphere when it comes to traveling,” Wicks continued.

“The neat thing is I have buddies on almost every team in the conference and my former roommate is now playing for Alaska

Wicks came through South Delta Minor Hockey before spending two seasons at the Delta Hockey Academy, playing for the Wild Elite 15 and Midget Prep teams. It was then a productive campaign in the Pacific Junior Hockey League with the Richmond Sockeyes where he led the team in scoring with 41 points.

That opened the door for his opportunity in Merritt where he would spend the next three seasons playing under GM and head coach Joe Martin.

Wicks not only had to adjust to playing at the junior “A” level but living away from home for the first time and in a small town of just over 7,000.

“It’s something I wasn’t use to but it turned out to be really cool,” he reflected. “We were very involved in the community. We helped out at the elementary schools on almost a weekly basis and people would just message our coach and we would be there to help. Like shoveling driveways for seniors when we got a lot of snow.

“One of the best parts was living so close to my teammates because it was such a small area. We would get the odd Sunday off and would drive to Kamloops or Kelowna if the roads weren’t bad.”

Wicks also became close to his billets – Amanda Stock and Terrance Thomas. They even spent some time vacationing with his family during the

summer.

“It was a bit weird and an adjustment at first but now they are like my other family,” he said. “I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything and I kind of wish I was going back for another season but it’s time to move on.”

Wicks is also grateful for what Martin did for his career. Ironically, he is also on the move, accepting the GM and head coach position in Alberni Valley.

“He helped me out a ton,” Wicks added. “He is definitely a huge part of why I am moving on and why I had so much fun in Merritt. It was a huge honour to be captain for him in my final year.”

Still Wicks, had plenty of highlights in his final BCHL campaign, perhaps none more than a visit to Coquitlam back in January.

That’s when his younger brother Garrett was calledup from major midget by the Express and the Wicks lined-up against each other for the game’s opening face-off.

Garrett looked like he would get the best of his brother by earning his first-ever BCHL point with an assist until Nick scored the tying goal with 36 seconds left and also notched the overtime winner.

It will be sometime in May when the full edition of the 2019 Delta Islanders is finally on the floor. That doesn’t mean there won’t be any urgency when they open the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League season on Saturday night.

The Islanders will be missing roughly 10 regulars when they take on the Burnaby Lakers at the Ladner Leisure Centre (7 p.m.). All teams are in the same predicament as players trickle back home from school.

The club had 25 players at Monday night’s practice and that was a combination of the Junior “A” and “B1” teams. The rosters have yet to be divided up as the coaching staff attempts to put together a competitive line-up to play five of its

21-game schedule by May 12.

“You are still trying out guys and you are also not sure if the guys coming back will be in shape and ready to play,” said Islanders cohead coach Andy Ogilvie. “We don’t even have enough to separate the teams yet and are just going day-today right now.”

Delta is coming off a 6-14 season and is looking to return to the playoffs for the first time since the 2016 championship season. The hope is a number of aged up players a year ago, from a strong 2000-born age group, will pay off on the road to contending again.

There will be more young talent including 2001 standout Mitch Sandberg who is headed to Ohio State on a field lacrosse scholarship. Grade 11 Ben McDonald, who thrives on the football field as a pro-

vincial all-star quarterback at South Delta, is also expected to contribute.

There is also some veteran presence including fifth-year Ryan Jones who led the league in playoff scoring last season after being dealt to New West. He has yet to play in the postseason for his hometown team.

Fourth-year Brody Harris and fifth-year Matt Hills are standouts in net.

“We have two of the better goalies in the league and it means a lot to work around that because you are not going to do anything without good goaltending,” said co-coach Kyle Goundrey.

“Yes we do have a young team but we also have the most players coming back of any team in the league.

We hope to take advantage of that with those young guys have a year under their belt.”

The B.C. Secondary Schools Rugby Union’s landscape is looking familiar to the South Delta Sun Devils as the regular season hits the stretch run.

The province’s No. 1 ranked 3A team has taken a couple of big steps towards locking up top spot in the Fraser Valley West Pool Group with wins over Mountain and Elgin Park to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Devils travelled to Langley two weeks ago to pull out a hard-hardfought 31-23 victory over Mountain.

The Eagles entered the tilt ranked eighth in the province.

It was then off to South Surrey on Thursday to face Elgin in a battle of 2-0 teams.

The South Delta took control early and went on to the impressive 32-7 win on tries from Callum McLeod, Evan Paterson, Max Cantlon, Colten McDougall, Andrew Kraft and Ethan Troniak.

The Sun Devils will host DW Poppy (1-2) on Thursday then conclude their league schedule April 30 in Cloverdale against Lord Tweedsmuir (1-2).

A couple opponents during last year’s memorable run to the program’s first-ever B.C. title are looming on the horizon.

However, a potential rematch in the Fraser Valley final is hardly a certainty if the Earl Marriott Mariners are back in the equation.

The South Surrey powerhouse is currently part of the five-team BCSSRU Premier League with Carson Graham, Oak Bay, St. George’s and

Shawnigan Lake.

If the Mariners finish out of the top four they come down to the 3A tier for the post-season. That’s what happened a year ago when they defeated South Delta in the Fraser Valley final but fell to Bateman in the provincial semis.

Marriott currently sits 0-2 in Premier play but were competitive in matches against Oak Bay (47-36) and Carson Graham (31-19).

Joanie passed away peacefully on Monday, March 25, 2019 after a brief illness. She is predeceased by her parents Hank and Joan, twin brother John and sister Janet.

DAVIS, Richard James July 8, 1933 - April 3, 2019 A Life Well-Lived It is with deepest sadness that the family of Dick Davis announces his peaceful passing after a brief illness. Born in Ladner and a longtime Tsawwassen resident, Dick will be lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend of 56 years, Betty, and his children, Maureen, Bob (Julie), and Ian; many nieces and nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

Dick was from a Ladner pioneer family and was predeceased by his parents Alexis and Ruby (Kirkland) Davis, and his older brother Jack Davis.

Dick spent his early work years in Ocean Falls and went on to become a master machinist, working many years with the BC Forest Service until retirement. Dick then formed Davis Enterprises and worked out of his well-equipped home shop for the next 25 years. It was a short commute to go to work and his customers became friends, often sitting down for a cup of coffee and a chat when a project was ready for pick up. When it came time to downsize, Dick and Betty moved to Chelsea Gardens in Surrey, close to their children.

A Celebration of Dick’s life will be held at 2pm on Saturday, May 11th in the Fraser Room at the Sheraton Guildford Hotel, 15269 - 104 Avenue, Surrey. Please join us to remember a great man.

As Dick was a longtime member of the Delta Hospital Auxiliary, memorial donations may be made to Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society, 5800 Mountain View Blvd., Delta, V4K 3V6.

It is with great regret that we announce the passing of Erzsebet Lix, 84. She was born in Budapest, Hungary on June 20th, 1934. Erzsebet came to Canada in 1956 as a refugee, first living in Quebec, and then moving to British Columbia. Her greatest passions were cooking and tending to her garden.

She was predeceased by her son Steven, and is survived by her husband Istvan, and her granddaughter Amber.

The service will be a small, private affair.
