Manslaughter trial opens

‘Consensual fist fight’ turned into much more, Crown prosecutor contends IAN JACQUES

A heated argument that turned into a pair of altercations led to the death of a Tsawwassen man nearly three years ago outside the Rose and Crown Pub, a B.C. Supreme Court trial heard this week.

Franco Douglas Sarra, a graduate of South Delta Secondary now living in Burnaby, is facing a manslaughter charge in connection with the death of 53-year-old Russ Armfelt.

Armfelt was located unconscious early in the morning of Dec. 11, 2016 outside the rear of the 56th Street pub.

The trial opened before Justice Trevor Armstrong in New Westminster on Monday morning, the gallery packed with friends and family of Armfelt on one side and friends and family of Sarra on the other.

Crown prosecutors David Simpkin and Stephanie Sifka told the court they would call nine civilian witnesses made up of past and present employees of the pub as well as customers on the night of the incident.

Sifka said the witnesses would testify to the atmosphere of the pub, the demeanor of both Armfelt and Sarra as well what some observed during the altercations outside.

“The Crown anticipates that the evidence you are about to hear will show that Mr. Sarra and Mr. Armfelt engaged in a consensual fist fight outside of

the Rose and Crown Pub,” said Sifka. “The evidence will show that Mr. Sarra delivered multiple punches to Mr. Armfelt in the area of the face and head.

The Crown’s theory is that Mr. Armfelt’s consent to the overall fight was vitiated due to the foreseeable risk of serious hurt or bodily harm and Mr. Sarra intended to cause bodily harm to Mr. Armfelt.”

Pub co-owner Shelley Metrow testified to the atmosphere inside the pub and confirmed that Armfelt was a patron that night.

Metrow said she had known Armfelt for more than 20 years and that she interacted with him on a few occasions during the

evening.

Erin Cochrane, a former busser, also gave evidence about the atmosphere in the pub, testifying that she knew Sarra from school and identified him through CCTV footage, which Crown entered into evidence.

D’Arcy Maher, who was employed at the time as a host/doorman, testified it was a busy night, but nothing out of the ordinary was going on.

He said it was between 12:30 and 1 a.m. when he was alerted by another staff member about something going on outside the pub.

He testified that he went outside where he saw a circle of five guys arguing.

He said he recognized two individuals, Aman Gill and Tony Orlitzky, both customers of the pub, and who will also be called as witnesses.

Maher said he later learned the third individual was Armfelt and the fourth he identified as the defendant. He told the court he didn’t know the fifth person.

Maher said as he tried to intervene, Gill and Orlitzky broke off from the group.

“The hats and the coats started coming off and they paired off from the other three,” said Maher. “I go and get between them and tell them they should not be having a fight. I put my hands on both of them and said this is not going

to happen.”

Simpkin then asked Maher after he broke up that fight what was the first thing he heard. Maher said it was a loud thumping sound.

“Something got hit — hard,” said Maher. “It was behind me. I turned around to see what the sound was. I observed Russell falling back and that he was going to get hit again. I heard the first hit, but I didn’t see it.”

He said he then went to intervene.

“I go running over and arriving thinking I’m going to put the defendant in a full nelson and when I get there he is already swinging to hit Russell again. I miss the full nelson and I got one arm and spun him around, which turned us face-to-face,” he recalled.

“Russ was falling backwards. I believe he was out. He was not defending himself, he wasn’t putting his hands back to protect his fall. He wasn’t putting his hands up to protect him from getting hit again.

He was unconscious, knocked out.”

During cross-examination of all three witnesses, defence attorney Jeff Campbell tried to discredit them by showing the court their versions of events were unclear.

He challenged the timelines and presented two police statements that Maher made in the hours after the incident he contended were not consistent with his testimony.

The trial is scheduled for two weeks.

She’s served on the Metro Vancouver board for many years, even a couple of terms as its chair, but now Lois Jackson finds herself suddenly on the outside.

Jackson and Mayor George Harvie had been Delta’s representatives to the regional level of government until a late addition to this week’s Delta council agenda by Harvie removed her as a director.

She’s been replaced by veteran councillor Bruce McDonald.

“As mayor, I want to ensure there are opportunities for all council members to participate in the Metro Vancouver regional government through the second director position.

For the remainder of this council’s term, I am recommending the second Delta Metro Vancouver director position and two alternates be rotated annually amongst council members. I am of the opinion that this is fair and inclusive and will greatly improve the knowl-

edge of council members on regional issues and impacts to our city,” Harvie wrote.

Harvie on Monday noted the report was distributed on Friday, but Jackson said she only learned of his move earlier that day.

Jackson, who has been outspoken against Harvie’s support of an eight-lane tunnel to replace the George Massey Tunnel, after Harvie had been an advocate for the previous bridge project, said she was “gobsmacked” by his one-page report.

Jackson told the

Optimist the following day she was disappointed to be informed by the clerk she was removed from the Metro board immediately. She won’t be able to attend this Friday’s board meeting where directors will be voting on whether to endorse a task force’s recommendation on the tunnel proposal.

Jackson, the former mayor who brought in Harvie as city manager in the early 2000s, was a late addition to Harvie’s slate in last year’s civic election, although reports have been widely circulating of a rift between the two.

MAiD driving wedge in Delta Hospice Whether to provide medically-assisted death has created turmoil for non-profit society SANDOR GYARMATI

Accusations are flying and hard feelings are evident as the Delta Hospice Society grapples with the issue of legally assisted death.

The non-profit society’s annual general meeting at Harris Barn last week was a packed affair that was described by one individual who took part as “a gong show.”

The board, criticized for changing the deadline for new members to be eligible to vote at the AGM, was forced to cancel the proceedings after the number of ballots cast was greater than the number of members signed up to vote. A recount confirmed the totals, which invalidated the results and will require a new election to be scheduled.

The board was also accused of trying to stack the leadership of the society with those who support the Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program, which is now legal in Canada, be provided in its entirety at

the Delta Hospice Society’s Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner.

However, others are claiming the opposite is happening, that those philosophically opposed to MAiD are looking to gain control of the board.

Board president Jim Levin told the Optimist that as far as the complaint that voting rights were denied, the board had a specific cut-off date of Oct. 1, the day before the AGM was announced, for all new memberships.

“We have never in our history experienced such a significant surge in memberships, so as a board, we needed to put a clear deadline on membership applications in order for staff to be able to manage the administration of this additional and timeconsuming work on top of their existing duties. There was no denial of AGM voting rights to members whose memberships were approved before this deadline,” he said.

The decision on whether to provide MAiD has been a contentious one for the past couple of years,

so much so that longtime executive director Nancy Macey, who founded the organization more than 25 years ago, told the Optimist she was terminated last month.

A vocal opponent of MAiD, Macey said, when asked for comment this week by the Optimist, that she and her husband attended last week’s meeting as members to vote, but that’s the extent of her involvement now.

“I have walked away from the organization

at this point and am not involved in recruitment of members or other matters of the AGM or operations.

The Delta Hospice Society belongs to our community and I have passed it on to those who care about maintaining the values and culture that have made the organization so special. My hope is that the community keeps the vision alive,” Macey said.

This Monday, members received a condemnatory letter from acting executive director Sharon

Farrish, which will no doubt add fuel to the fire.

Farrish was highly complimentary of DHS staff members for their passion and dedication, while critical of recent distractions by what she called “disruptive members” whose actions she said are now starting to impact services and morale, forcing the society to spend thousands on legal fees.

“There is an angst amongst staff and volunteers; many have expressed uncertainty

about the future of this organization. I know many were at the AGM and are closely watching the outcome of AGM and election in order to determine their own future with Delta Hospice Society. This is of great concern as our staff and volunteers are our most valuable asset, and without their dedication and commitment, our services could not continue,” she wrote.

As far as MAiD, patients at the Irene Thomas Hospice wishing for medically-assisted death have to be taken to another location for the procedure.

Fraser Health was asked whether it is now requiring all hospice facilities that receive funding to provide the complete service.

“As we have previously shared, we understand this is a very difficult and emotional issue for people. We need to remember that at the heart of all of this is the patient. With this in mind, we continue to work with all of our community partners to move forward to find the best solution for everyone,” a spokesperson stated.

Poll results show Liberals topped all three areas

Liberal incumbent Carla Qualtrough ended up with 42 per cent of the popular vote in last Monday’s federal election.

Liberal incumbent Carla Qualtrough received the most votes in all three Delta communities in last Monday’s federal election on her way to a more than 4,300-vote victory.

The Optimist did a poll-by-poll analysis of election day totals at all 29 polling stations in the riding to see if voting patterns differed in the city’s three communities.

Although Qualtrough, who was a minister in Justin

Trudeau’s cabinet during her first term in office, had larger margins in North Delta, she was well supported throughout the riding.

She ended up winning 23 of the riding’s 29 polling stations.

Qualtrough won North Delta by 1,939 votes (7,183-5,244), topping 13 of the 15 polling stations. Conservative candidate Tanya Corbet, who finished second in last Monday’s election, won Pinewood and Seaquam.

Qualtrough won Ladner by 670 votes (4,015-3,345), winning five of six polling stations. Corbet won

Neilson Grove by 20 votes.

In Tsawwassen, Qualtrough won by 477 votes (3,689-3,212), taking five of the eight polling stations, including the Tsawwassen First Nation Recreation Centre (115111). Corbet, a TFN member and former councillor, won Cliff Drive, English Bluff and South Park.

The numbers don’t include advance, mobile or mailed votes, only those ballots cast at polling stations on election day.

When all votes were counted, Qualtrough received 21,969 (41.2 per cent) to Corbet’s 17,638 (33.1 per cent).

A piece of the community’s past will be on permanent display in Delta in the future.

Members of the Delta Heritage Society and others involved in a major fundraising effort to purchase a striking oil painting by acclaimed local marine artist John Horton, a work called Arrival at Port Guichon, were on hand at city hall Monday to present the artwork as a gift to the city.

The painting will be on permanent display at the Delta Cultural Centre when that facility opens next year.

The campaign’s goal was $50,000, with Horton donating $20,000 to the Delta Heritage Society.

The fundraising hit its target this summer when civic-minded people interested in art and local history attended to An Evening of Enchantment on the grounds of the estate of Harlow and Mary Ann Burrows.

At Monday’s presentation, Husband said it had been a four-year journey that wasn’t having a lot of success until the fundraiser at the estate.

Horton, who presented Mayor George Harvie with a cheque for $20,000, said he hoped to do a work that would be on permanent display in a Delta public space. He said he hopes this is just the beginning of a major art collection for the city, noting every city should have its own art gallery.

fter all the promises and all the fierce back-and-forth over the issues, it looks like last week’s federal election here in Delta came down to something far simpler — your postal code. Or maybe that should be your T4 slip.

When we added up the votes cast last Monday at Delta’s 29 polling stations for the top two finishers, victorious Liberal incumbent Carla Qualtrough and Conservative challenger Tanya Corbet, it didn’t take long to see a pattern develop. Qualtrough, who received 42 per cent of all ballots cast on her way to a 4,300-vote victory, was the candidate of choice in all three communities, winning 23 of the riding’s 29 polling stations, but it was interesting to note that Corbet’s polling station victories came in Sunshine Hills/Sunshine Woods, Marina Garden Estates and English Bluff.

If you’re not familiar with Delta’s geography, or more specifically its real estate landscape, Sunshine Hills/ Sunshine Woods is the nicest part of North Delta, Marina Garden Estates is the priciest area of Ladner and English Bluff is home to Tsawwassen’s most valuable properties. OK, so I’m generalizing here, but it’s pretty darn clear that the more affluent the neighbourhood, the better the Conservative message resonated.

It should be noted that even in places where Corbet won, Qualtrough was not far behind as the Conservative candidate topped four of six polling stations by 20 or less votes. So it’s not like the election was fought solely along economic lines, although there were three neighbourhoods in North Delta where Qualtrough won by a two-to-one margin or close to it.

The takeaway from last week’s election here in Delta is that all parts of the riding went Liberal. There was a concern voiced prior to voting day that even if South Delta returned to its blue roots, it could be outvoted by a more left-leaning North Delta, a scenario that didn’t materialize. The margins were larger in North Delta, but both Ladner and Tsawwassen, once right-of-centre strongholds, were also painted red.

It could be reasonably argued that in 2015 a large number of traditional right wingers here cast a protest vote, but last Monday’s result showed that many of them are comfortable where they landed.

Farmers rally against NDP bill they claim is too restrictive

ell, tonight is the big night. The kids have been vibrating for days now and finally they will be able to head out and fill up their bags with candy.

There has been talk about moving Halloween to the last Saturday in October to attempt to quell the disruption the celebration has during the school week. It is not a bad idea but I think the power of the event is too strong to suppress the anticipation for a couple of days.

Farmer Mike has been feeding the kids spinach the past little bit as part of our annual green teeth contest, and we are starting some food pairing lessons combing savoury and sweet flavours in an attempt to lessen the need for salad dressing. Small things that may have an impact down the road.

As I have mentioned in the past, it is hoped that some of these children will one day consider a career in agriculture, but again, the barriers are significant and it would appear that farmers are not terribly happy with the current state of affairs in this province.

On Monday, several dozen farmers from all over British Columbia stood in solidarity in front of the legislature in Victoria to protest Bill 52 which touts a “Farming First Focus” at the

expense of housing opportunities to take care of family and farm worker housing needs.

Ministry of Agriculture staff were in town a few weeks back to highlight changes within Bill 52 and the event clearly demonstrated that the housing issue is a hot button and most of the fourhour meeting was spent by farmers giving ridiculous accounts of ALC requirements. Minister Lana Popham was tracked down on Monday and said that farmers could apply to the ALC to build two or three or more homes on their farms. The chances of winning the lottery are much better.

Additionally, Bill 52 makes it extremely difficult for farmers to generate additional revenue from the farm.

At the rally in Victoria and at the meeting here in Tsawwassen, Sunshine Coast pig and sheep farmer Raquel Kolof spoke about

the frustrations of operating a small farm and trying to make ends meet. She wants to operate an eatery and sell wool at her farm but Bill 52 won’t allow it.

We have heard about eateries and various festivals being shut down by the legislation and it would now seem that the government will need to take a closer look at what it has done.

Our MLA and Liberal agricultural critic Ian Paton introduced a petition to the legislature signed by 26,000 farmers calling for the repeal of Bill 52.

He suggests that “Bill 52 has done nothing but tear communities apart and put farmers out of work” and that “farmers deserve to be protected by government, not persecuted by it.”

The B.C. Liberals plan to introduce a Home-Based Craft Food Act, which, if passed, would allow small farm sourced businesses to make and sell low-risk food products like jams, candy, honey and the like to consumers from their farms. That seems like a nobrainer, doesn’t it?

In a word fraught with regulation and bureaucracy, it seems to me that farmers don’t want to be tricked and that they deserve a treat.

DSS graduating class looking to right Hell Night wrongs

Editor: On behalf of Delta Secondary’s graduating class of 2020, the grad council would like to apologize to Ladner residents for the damages done on Hell Night.

The intention of this night was far from what resulted. We did not intend to deface and disrespect our community, but to create memories with our graduating class.

We understand that it got out of hand, and it cost our community a lot of money and effort to

right our wrongs. This was irresponsible to assume that the people around us would clean our mess up, and we can assure you this event does not define who we are as a group.

Moving forward, we will be making efforts that will benefit our community. We would like to host cleanups around Ladner, and snow shovelling services in the winter.

We agree as a group that something must be done to repay our neighbours for the upset we caused in early September.

We made mistakes, but we hope that Ladner can agree to appreciate us coming together as a group, and be proud of our actions moving forward.

We have already started to come together for a better cause. Our first bottle drive of the year is right around the corner. We would appreciate it if you could check your mailboxes for a small white DSS Bottle Drive flyer and attach it to your bottles set out on your driveway on Nov. 2.

Cut seniors a break during non-peak hours

Editor: On July 1, the City of Delta introduced a Youth Admission Pass for Delta youth between the ages of 10 and 18. The pass provides its holder with free access to all Delta recreation facilities and drop-in programs.

From my experience, anything that is free gets limited use, sometimes gets abused and has limited long-time effect.

After six months it would be interesting to see the

results of this generous offer.

To the best of my knowledge, Delta residents 85 and over also have complimentary access to the facilities. With the growing base of seniors in Delta, mayor and council also have a responsibility to keep this group healthy, thereby reducing costs on our medical system.

I would suggest Delta council consider a $10 monthly rate (same paid by some groups) for all

seniors over the age of 65 years of age and to those with long-term physical disabilities. This rate, in my opinion, should be offered during non-peak hours, say 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Doing so would encourage more individuals disabled and those over 65 to use the facilities. It would also create additional revenue and keep staff engaged during non-peak hours. Let’s encourage our seniors to stay healthy.

Editor: To all those drivers east of 56th Street attempting to make a right turn onto 12th Avenue and are stopped at a stop sign looking left awaiting an opening before proceeding, please look to your right once more before stepping on the gas.

While you are looking left, a pedestrian may have

stepped in front of your auto believing you are a good driver and will look to your right before proceeding.

To the senior female driver who brushed my backside with her car on Oct. 26 at Morris Crescent around 12:15 p.m., shame on you for almost ruining my day and maybe the rest of my life.

The Driver’s Handbook states: “Watch out for pedestrians on cross streets whenever you make a turn.” A stop sign means: “Stop completely — continue when safe.”

It doesn’t mean stop, look left, then proceed.

A pedestrian may have stepped out while you were looking left.

Conservatives seek support years after her passing

Editor: Last Tuesday, the day after the federal election, my mail came and I was surprised to see two pamphlets from the two major political parties. One was unaddressed, the other addressed to my late wife

asking for her support for Andrew Scheer and the Conservatives.

I don’t need the Conservative Party to remind me that not only did my wife Nancy pass away, but did so a full fiveand-a-half years ago.

I am thankful this group of inept and callous individuals did not form the next government.

This error is, in my opinion, more egregious than Justin Trudeau’s blackface.

• Oct. 20, 12:29 a.m., 5600-block of 10A Avenue: Youth complainant reported hearing tapping at the rear window of the residence. Police cleared back yard and area of window, nothing disturbed.

Tapping likely attributed to an insect or bird.

• Oct. 22, 3:55 p.m., 100block of Ferry Causeway: Delta police community volunteer called police as there was an insecure vehicle parked in longterm parking lot bearing a U.S. licence plate. Vehicle was locked but front driver and passenger windows were all the way down.

Police were able to locate the registered owner’s family and subsequently speak with owner who advised she was returning that night. She declined having vehicle towed, advising she did not have any valuables inside.

• Oct. 23, 6:25 p.m., 5200-block of 12th Avenue: Complainant called police to report a theft as her grim reaper blow up Halloween decoration was stolen from her front lawn.

Theft occurred sometime overnight. Value of theft: approximately $180.

• Oct. 23, 7:43 p.m., 600-block of Bluegrouse Place: Police received two reports from complainants hearing fireworks being lit off in the neighbourhood.

Complainants advised they were unable to see how many people were involved. No descriptions provided. Police conducted patrols of the area with nothing seen or heard. The subjects of the complaint were gone on arrival.

• Oct. 24, 9:50 p.m., 700-block of 53rd Street: Multiple reports were received about a group of youth lighting off fireworks in the neighbourhood.

Multiple groups of youths were observed in area and dispersed without issue, although none admitted to possessing/lighting fireworks. No fireworks heard by police during patrols.

• Oct. 25, 2:48 a.m., 100-block of 53rd Street: Complainant called police to report a possible break and enter in progress at his residence. Complainant advised hearing banging at his door and saw three males approaching the garage door and then hearing his rear gate slam. Police arrived on scene and observed one male leaving the driveway. Police met with a teen male who advised that he and two friends were playing Nicky Nicky Nine Doors. The other two teens returned and identified themselves to police.

Complainant confirmed nothing stolen and no damage to property. The teens were released into the care of their respective parents. All three parties were apologetic.

• Oct. 26, 3:12 p.m., 100block of Ferry Causeway:

Complainant reported a male passenger who was grossly intoxicated and belligerent. Police were advised the male missed the bus and was barely able to walk. Police arrived and spoke to male, observing slurred speech, uneven balance and strong odour of liquor. Police determined male was unable to care for himself so he was taken into custody without issue and held until sober.

• Oct. 26, 9:44 p.m., 5600-block of 6th Avenue: While conducting patrols, police stopped two males for lighting fireworks. The males initially denied having fireworks on their persons but eventually relinquished them to police. One male in possession of three lighters, two of which were surrendered. The male reported he had recently suffered second degree burns to forearm as a result of “falling into bonfire.” Both parties cooperative with police. Fireworks/lighters lodged for exhibits to be destroyed.

• Oct. 21, 10:40 a.m., 4600-block of Evergreen Lane: Police responded to a complainant regarding a fraud. Complainant advised that her friend’s Facebook profile was hacked and Facebook message sent for a link to the Foundation of Forever Giving where her friend then texted her and told the complainant to buy gift cards and provide the numbers, to which he would respond by sending her $9,000 in return.

Complainant provided $200 and $450 gift card serial numbers, which have already been used, and her debit account.

However, shortly after

realizing she was the victim of a scam, she went to the bank and changed her account number. No fraudulent use on her debit.

• Oct. 24, 9:23 a.m., 4400-block of 52A Street: Complainant reported a mischief at his residence.

Complainant advised his vehicle was found on the driveway with two flat tires. Complainant advised the damage appears suspicious as both tires had screws puncturing them.

Police attended and found both passenger tires flat.

The car was driven the previous evening without issues. Damage appears suspicious. File number provided for insurance purposes. Approximately $800 damage.

• Oct. 24, 8:58 p.m., 4800-block of Elliott Street: Complainant reported a suspicious male opening and consuming beers in the parking lot. Police attended but the male was gone on arrival.

Complainant advised police the male is known to purchase alcohol for minors, though no evidence that the male was bootlegging for minors on this occasion. File for information.

• Oct. 24, 11:19 p.m., 5400-block of Maple Crescent: Complainant reported hearing a dog continuously barking.

Police attended and noted no barking or noise from any dogs. Due to the time of night, police did not speak with homeowners where barking was allegedly heard.

• Oct. 25, 6:19 a.m., 4800-block of Elliott Street: Complainant advised police she found her vehicle had been keyed along the driver’s side front and rear doors/quarter panel.

‘Keeper of the lights’ ready to brighten town Randy Scott and team to light up Tsawwassen in a time-honoured tradition by TBIA

As we head toward those cold and dark winter months, we know we need to turn on our lights earlier and earlier. That’s why the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association (TBIA) is out there trying to help brighten up the night.

A time-honoured tradition, the TBIA (well known by locals as Sunny Tsawwassen) has been colouring Tsawwassen with strings of reds, greens, blues, oranges and other cheery lights for the past 24 years.

Randy Scott, long-time owner and operator of Randy’s Tire and Auto Centre, is once again taking on the task of “keeper of the lights” as part of his volunteer role as a TBIA board member and member of the TBIA community enhancements committee.

Asked why he’s back, Scott said it’s about sending the right message.

“It’s not just about the lights. It’s time to get back into the community. I find over the years there’s been a disinterest in business owners getting involved in the community.”

As a busy business owner in Tsawwassen, Scott said it’s easy to get bogged down by work and just look at the bottom line. Businesses are so focused on trying to stay afloat that they forget about being present in the community, he said.

By hanging up Christmas lights, watering flower baskets or volunteering for local public events, Scott said people take note.

apt to want to support local businesses.”

Scott said business owners seem to rely too much on simply being a member of the TBIA in order to attract people to their storefronts. But customers are more likely to appreciate a business if they see an owner or employee doing something for the community.

For TBIA staff, the hardest part of the job is making sure the lights stay lit and everything continues to work properly throughout the winter season. If that means Scott is checking every light bulb and

power connection like an obsessive Clark Griswold, so be it.

“Sometimes you’re out there and have to do a ton of repairs. Other times it’s easy. Every day I drive home and it’s dark out I’m checking out the lights.

Every time I’m coming in from playing hockey, I take the run up 56th Street and have a look to make sure everything is working.”

The TBIA isn’t just putting up a rainbow of seasonal lights. Working with Delta police, the TBIA has been stringing white lights in the business district.

The bright and cheery

lights operate year-round, encouraging not just shopping after dark, but a safer community for all.

This year the business group will be adding additional permanent warm white lights to trees along 12th Avenue to brighten up the sidewalks and pedestrian crossings, thanks to grant funding from the City of Delta.

From now until January, Scott will be busy making sure the lights are aglow.

So, he has a request for drivers: “Try not to run me over, please,” he said with a smile. “I still have to go to work in the morning.”

Moonlight Gala to raise funds for cancer care 21st annual event this Saturday in Tsawwassen

Funds raised at the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation’s upcoming Moonlight Gala will be dedicated to enhancing cancer care at Delta Hospital.

The 21st annual gala will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Tsawwassen Springs.

The cancer incidence rate in Delta is projected to increase by 23 per cent over the next 10 years.

New state-of-the-art equipment will aid in cancer screening, prevention and treatment for an aging community.

This year’s sold out gala will bring together 350 business, community, government and medical leaders who will be immersed in an Arabian Night full of exotic entertainment and a threecourse meal worthy of a sultan.

Deltassist’s Christmas programs are gearing up and the local social services agency needs the public’s help once again.

Staff and volunteers are gratefully accepting donations of toys and food for the annual Toy Depot and Christmas food hampers.

Deltassist continues to rely on the overwhelming support of the community to meet the increasing need of low-income families, seniors and individuals in Delta.

This year’s Toy Depot will be held Dec. 10 to 12. Toys are needed for children from birth to 16 years of age. As always, the need is greatest for infants and teens.

With Halloween set to go today, we all know what that means about tomorrow.

There’ll be a massive markdown on the leftover candy corn, the Twizzlers, the Swedish Berries, the Tootsie Rolls, the Gummy Bears and the Kraft Caramels. This gives me no end of glee, since I am both a cheapskate and a sucker for all manner of Halloween candy, even if it’s been sitting on the store shelves since September.

I may have trouble sleeping tonight.

Then there’s this: the second the Halloween treats have been scooped up, out will come the candy cane kisses, the chocolate bark, the red and green gumdrops, the peppermint drops, the Christmas tree nougats and the marshmallow Santas.

And that’s just the candy.

The shops will also be pulling out a zillion other Yuletide items that have

been stashed who-knowswhere while they’ve waited for the first of November.

You know. The ornaments.

The tree toppers. The wrapping paper. The Santa hats and the gift tags and the Christmas cards and the wreaths and the ribbons and the candles.

Goodbye, plastic Jacko-Lanterns. Hello, ugly sweaters.

Gotta love it.

Yep, I’d be among the first to agree that

Christmas has no place on the store shelves in August. But tomorrow?

Heck, sounds like good timing to me.

“Can we get rid of that pumpkin?” I will say to the husband first thing tomorrow. “We need to put out the reindeer.”

“Isn’t it a bit early?” he will say, sipping the first of his coffee.

“No,” I will reply. “Let’s toss the pumpkin in the compost and pull out the flashing reindeer.”

We won’t be the only ones. All over the neighbourhood, folks will be ripping away the faux cobwebs and taking down the

tombstones. They’ll be disassembling the moaning mummies and the hanging bats and the waving ghostly sheets that have been designed to scare the living daylights out of tiny trick-or-treaters.

Then they’ll get in the spirit of Christmas.

One occasion follows another, and never more so than right now.

In the coming days, the lights will be hung, the swags will go up and the red pillar candles will glow.

Gonna start with the season in the next little while, but first, I’ll be out buying Twizzlers.

The winter season is fast approaching, but there are still plenty of volunteer opportunities at the Earthwise Garden.

Earthwise is hoping to recruit some helpers over the winter to get the garden ready for the spring season. As many gardeners will agree, winter can be a fabulous time to work in the garden.

Digging in the garden on a crisp, sunny winter day helps us connect with nature, and reminds us that spring will soon be on its way. There are many mental and physical health benefits that come from gardening year round.

If gardening isn’t really your thing, there are lots of other ways to help. Over the past three years, the Earthwise Garden has seen impacts from the Southlands development taking shape around it.

As the construction of the Market Square nears completion, Earthwise and its volunteer teams will be hard at work re-establishing the garden, improving infrastructure and restoring the site.

If you have knowledge to share, or skills and experience in gardening or

garden construction projects, Earthwise would love to hear from you.

On Thursday, Nov. 7, Earthwise Society will be hosting a volunteer social and information session from 5 to 7 p.m. at Sundial Villa’s meeting room, 5421-10th Ave., Tsawwassen.

Earthwise volunteers, who play a crucial role in the day-to day operations at Earthwise, will share their thoughts and ideas about the future direction of Earthwise as part of this open discussion and planning session.

For current volunteers, it’s a great opportunity to learn more about what the restructuring of Earthwise will look like and how you can help moving forward.

If you are a prospective volunteer who has always wondered how to get involved, you are invited to the event to meet other volunteers and be a part of the planning going forward.

Mingling at the Mills pays off nicely for Reach

The second annual Mingler at the Mills food and beverage fundraiser last month raised $5,500 to benefit Reach Child and Youth Development Society and local children with special needs.

Hosts Tsawwassen Mills and Boston Pizza ensured guests enjoyed endless appetizers while they listened to jazz, socialized and sampled artisan beer, fine wine and spirits.

Beverage sponsors included Four Winds Brewing, Parallel 49 Brewing, Steamworks Brewing, Steel & Oak Brewing, Delf Wines, Indigenous World Winery, Select Wines, Goodridge & Williams Distilling and Bremners.

Saks 5th Avenue fall fashions were modelled by Reach Foundation directors and 12 door prizes were awarded from mall vendors, Pacific Breeze Winery and The Drinks List. There was also a raffle with luggage and swag from Tommy Hilfiger and a barbecue courtesy of Bass Pro Shops.

If you love art and artisans, and love shopping local, then For the Love of Art in South Delta covers all your bases this weekend in Ladner.

The second annual event, the brainchild of local artist Jan Rankin, is bigger and better this year with 28 artists set to showcase and sell their creations on Saturday, Nov. 2 and Sunday, Nov. 3 at Harris Barn (4140 Arthur Dr.). The show and sale runs both days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free and all artists will accept Visa, Mastercard, debit and cash.

Russell Marsland and Raven Blackwell will provide music throughout the event, food will be available for purchase from Mr. Moms World Catering and Events and, as an added bonus, the first 1,000 people in the door will be able to participate in a scavenger hunt with a special prize up for grabs. There will also be other door prize drawings every hour during the weekend.

That is the intention of the event to not just have painters, but to showcase other artists like glasswork, pottery, jewelers, fibre arts and chocolate. I wanted to create a show where artists who don’t have easy access to showcase their art can in a unique setting.”

Rankin said she’s thrilled to see the event grow quickly.

“It’s a great opportunity to start Christmas shopping or shop for yourself,” she said. “Some of the artists have already started selling their art because of the exposure of the show online. It’s great to see our local artists being able to showcase their talents.”

Historical musical Pier 21 coming to Tsawwassen

The Optimist’s recent coverage of Ladner playwright Allen Desnoyers’ Pier 21 musical has resulted in a local theatre company, Bard in the Yard, securing a local public performance of the topical play.

The musical will be performed on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at South Delta Baptist Church in Tsawwassen.

“I’m thrilled to be able to provide this opportunity for local residents to see this wonderful musical,” said Jim Martens, spokesperson for Bard in the Yard. “My father and his

It was at Pier 21 in Halifax that immigrants and refugees fleeing Europe in 1939 arrived in Canada. It’s also where half a million soldiers departed from to fight in

the Second World War and where war brides and a new generation of immigrants arrived to take their first steps on Canadian soil.

After playing more than 100 shows in B.C. and Alberta since the production opened in January under Desnoyers’ Canadiana Musical Theatre Company banner, it moved on to Ottawa and then to Halifax to complete the story’s journey.

Desnoyers said reviews from the shows in Halifax were excellent.

The company just finished a week-long tour in Winnipeg and has arrived in Alberta for shows in Medicine Hat, Calgary, Edmonton and Cochrane before coming to Delta.

Tsawwassen filmmaker Jocelyn Demers presents a free screening of his latest documentary about bird conservation next week at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre.

The Future of Birds will be shown on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7:15 p.m.

The 40-minute film explores research conclusions from scientists and ornithologists from around the planet.

It’s the second solo film project for Demers, an independent producer and owner of Monde Films.

His first project, The Watershed Guardians of the Fraser River, which was released in February, is a 52-minute film about sustainability and the Fraser River.

He has directed, wrote and edited a total of six documentaries about sustainability.

“With the loss of global biodiversity and climate change in mind, the

world’s best ornithologists are understanding how important birds are for ecosystems and economies.”

Demers said there have been, at times, great efforts taken to protect birds, but it’s all connected so a loss of biodiversity has resulted in a loss of birds throughout the world.

“The film is about our region, but also the general situation around the world,” he said.

From the first time she saw them on stage, Andrena Greavette knew she wanted to join The Vaudevillians.

The Ladner resident has been a part of B.C.’s number one seniors’ entertainment troupe for more than a decade and still loves every minute of it.

“If you would have asked me 11 years ago, I would have said I would never be in a troupe like this,” she recalled. “But a friend of mine joined and she talked me into coming and watching a few shows and I fell in love with it.

That’s where I’ve been ever since.”

Greavette had been a part of a dance group that performed at area festivals, but nothing as professional as The Vaudevillians.

“The group that I was with many years ago was called the Hot Jazz Dancers,” she said. “As we got older, some took on other interests, others passed away, so the group

An opportunity to learn the art of Afro-Cuban percussion will be offered next week at the Delta Community Music School.

Master percussionist Jack Duncan, who recently moved to Ladner, is a dynamic performer and educator who is recognized for his work as a pioneer in the study and promotion of Afro-Cuban and African music. With more than 30 years of experience, Duncan has a depth of knowledge from the source that he loves to share with students.

The foundations of the music will be covered in the local workshop, giving students an insight into the African roots and European influence that have had an effect on its evolution.

Whether you’re a percussionist, instrumentalist or vocalist, the workshop will help develop and improve the ability to hear how patterns fit together and also provide an opportunity to play authentic Afro-Cuban rhythms.

“I don’t think there are a lot of people out here that are familiar with it, so it’s an opportunity to learn more and experience this music,” said Duncan. “You will get a real hands-on experience. The workshop is open to everyone 12 years and up. I’ve been putting workshops like these for a long time. I really enjoy it.”

“The depth of the music, the amount of complexity that is involved in this music and interplay between the instruments really fascinated me from the beginning,” Duncan said. “I had to go to Africa and Cuba to learn, actually

do it. I’ve been to Cuba 28 times now to learn and immerse myself in that culture and learn from the best.”

Duncan said he loves teaching and giving back to future generations.

“Hopefully it inspires everyone with this music because it is incredible,” he said.

The workshop is on Friday, Nov. 8 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Delta Community Music School (4705 Arthur Dr.) and is open to anyone 12 years and up.

Senses of smell and taste can diminish as early as age 60 Aging comes with several sensory changes, many of which people expect.

Loss of hearing or diminishing vision are widely associated with aging. But one’s senses of smell and taste may diminish with aging as well.

The senses of taste and smell work in concert. The sense of smell is vital to personal health, not only because inhaling pleasant aromas can provide comfort and stress relief through aromatherapy and help trigger important memories, but also because smell enables a person to detect the dangers of smoke, gas, spoiled food and more.

The National Institute on Aging says that, as a person gets older, his or her sense of smell may fade, and that will also affect taste. The Mayo Clinic says some loss of taste and smell is natural and can begin as early as age 60.

Adults have about 9,000 taste buds sensing sweet, salty, sour, bitter and savoury flavours, or those corresponding to the flavor of glutamates.

The sense of smell can diminish due to a loss of nerve endings and less mucus in the nose. odours that begin at the nerve endings in the lining of the nose. Medline says the number of taste buds decreases as one ages, and that remaining taste buds may begin to shrink.

Similarly, especially after age 70, smell can diminish due to a loss of nerve endings and less mucus in the nose. With the combination of the reduction of these important sensory nerves in the nose and on the tongue, loss of smell and taste can greatly affect daily life.

Changes in these senses can contribute to feelings of depression, diminish one’s enjoyment of food and cause harmful conditions, such as extreme weight loss from disinterest in food to problems associated with overusing salt or sugar.

Although aging is often to blame, loss of smell and taste also may be tied to early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease.

Cancer treatments, medications, lack of saliva, colds, flu and other factors may contribute to sensory loss. Changing medications or treatments may help.

South Delta heads into Friday’s showdown with New West without star QB

The South Delta Sun Devils are hoping ample playing time for Hunter Norman is about to pay off, beginning Friday night.

The Grade 11 quarterback will be making his first start at the senior varsity level when the top ranked Sun Devils (6-0-0) travel to Mercer Stadium to take on the New West Hyacks (5-1-0) with first place in the Western AAA Conference on the line.

Norman will be the team’s No.1 pivot for the next two games at least after Ben McDonald suffered a broken collarbone in the late stages of Saturday’s 28-14 win over the Mt. Doug Rams at Dennison Park.

The 2018 provincial all-star and top university prospect is expected to be sidelined between four-to-six weeks. It means his team has to advance to the provincial semi-final (Nov. 23) for any chance of him stepping on the field again this season.

A win over the Hyacks would go a long way towards making that happen.

Not only would the Devils lock-up first place and an opening round bye but also secure the top playoff seed and a more favourable quarter-final match-up. A loss could drop South Delta to third place with Vancouver College (5-1-0) also being part of a potential three-way tiebreaker.

Norman has made relief appearances in four of the Sun Devils’ past five games and certainly stepped up in his first pressure-packed situation Saturday by firing a 33-yard gameclinching touchdown strike to Rhys Porteous on his first series. He then calmly hit Damon Badenhorst for the two-point convert. But make no mistake, South Delta has lost one of the province’s most dynamic players that simply can’t be replaced.

It will be up to offensive coordinator Mark McDonald to work with Norman’s strengths.

The Sun Devils still have plenty of other playmakers and it’s a matter of their young pivot making the right reads to get the ball in their hands.

cer team has advanced to the semi-finals of the South Fraser AAA Playoffs after a 3-0 win over the North Surrey Spartans on Tuesday afternoon at Winskill Park. They now have two cracks at locking down a spot at the B.C. showcase tourney in Burnaby, start-

ing with Monday’s final four encounter against Fleetwood Park in a match-up of the province’s 10th and sixth ranked teams respectively. A win would send them to the title game on Nov. 7 in Newton, while a loss would mean a do-or-die consolation game 24 hours

later.

It’s been a tough go for South Delta in recent years, due mainly to a very deep zone loaded with strong Surrey schools.

However, a solid group of mainly Grade 12s have been complimented by a strong contingent of international students

It didn’t take long during tryouts back in early September for long-time coaches Stephen Burns and Brent Sweeney to realize this team might be capable of doing something special. The Sun Devils proceeded to win a tournament in Kamloops then finish second in their league behind top ranked Panorama Ridge.

“In the past we have typically had two or three international kids. But not like this with this level of skill,” said Sweeney. “Once we realized what we had, we told them we had a legitimate chance of going to the provincials.”

“What has also helped is all our Grade 12s have been with us since Grade 10,” added Burns. “They got to play against better and stronger teams. They have gone through the

battles and understand the challenge that is in front of them.”

The 11th seed Spartans came into Tuesday’s tilt off an upset win the previous day against Princess Margaret. The visitors had the best scoring chances of the opening half, including a penalty kick that required a terrific diving stop by goalkeeper Simon Raderecht.

South Delta took over in the second half with Jason Crump scoring what proved to be the game winner. International students Lorenzo Auro and David Seppik added insurance tallies.

Burns had high praise for Constatin Von Borries, describing the German as one of the best holding centre midfielders he has seen at the high school level in his many years of coaching.

“This is also just a really good group of kids and we are having a lot of fun coaching them,” added Burns.

Beach Grove’s Minni recognized

by Golf BC for outstanding season

Jace Minni has been recognized for a superb 2019 season.

The Beach Grove Golf Club standout is B.C. Golf’s nomination for the Pacific Northwest Golf Association’s Junior Boys Player of the Year Award.

Minni’s campaign included capturing the Maple Leaf Junior Tour’s Odlum Brown Classic at Northview and also finishing fourth at the Canadian Junior Boys Championships in New Brunswick.

He added a sixth place finish at the B.C. Junior Boys and 19th at the B.C. Amateur.

The Grade 12 South Delta Secondary student has committed to Gonzaga University, starting in

September 2020.

The B.C. Golf Championship Committee meets annually in early October to vote and select the Players of the Year in the categories of Men’s, Women’s, Senior Men’s, Senior Women’s, Men’s MidAmateur, Women’s Mid-Amateur, Junior Boys’ and Junior Girls’.

The British Columbia Golf Order of Merit list is used as the primary guide for the selection, although other factors are also considered.

North Delta’s Mary Parsons has been nominated for the Women’s Player of the Year Award. She is in her sophomore year at Indiana University.

SANGSTER, Vickie November 20, 1956 - October 24, 2019 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Vickie Lea Sangster (nee Chamberlin), an amazing woman, mother, wife, sister, and friend. She passed away peacefully in the early morning of October 24th, surrounded by her husband, daughters, and her sister Barb. Vickie surpassed her original terminal lung cancer prognosis of 6 months -1 year, fighting an inspiring battle lasting just over 5 1/2 years.

Vickie was born in Comox on November 20, 1956, and was the first of five siblings (Steve, Claye, Barb, Rosanna). She was a joyful child and her early years were spent playing in nature, often with her brothers and pets in tow. She enjoyed school and was an excellent student. As a teen, she took to the stage as the lead singer and accordion player for her band “Leather & Lace”. After graduation, Vickie moved to Vancouver. It was during this time that she met her soulmate, Don. They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on September 15, 2019, and what a love they have shared!!!

Long−time Ladner resident Thomas Waithe, passed away on October 26, 2019. Survived by his wife of 67 years, Shelley; sons, Thomas (Sandra) and Michael (Margo); and four grandchildren. Tom and Shelley lived on 54th Street for many years after he retired from the BC Sherriff Services and a lengthy military career. His journey ended peacefully after a long fight with Dementia. He loved Ladner to the end and always sought the chance to get back to see the Legion, Harris’s, or Sharkys and walk on the dyke. No service by request.

Vickie was an amazing mother to three daughters: Deanna (Joe), Sonya, and Bridget (Jon), as well as a grandmother to her beloved Autumn. Vickie also opened her heart and home to many international students over the years, who each became a special addition to the Sangster Family. One particular student from Germany, Susanne, she considered her fourth daughter.

Travel was her passion. You Only Live Once “YOLO”, became her mantra as she planned itineraries for herself and Don that would make Rick Steves green with envy. Vickie had a humorous knack for sharing her stories of travel abroad and this was the base for her book “Where are the Puffins”, which was published in 2017.

Her joy of travel took them to 55 countries, with many great memories and hilarious tales of adventure (and sometimes misadventure) along the way. Vickie’s laugh was infectious and she shared it freely! When her children were young, Vickie became the President of the Richmond/Delta Twin Club. While in that position, she received regular casting calls for twins. That led her to form a Talent Agency called “Twins Plus Talent”, which grew to be one of the largest children’s agencies for movie extras north of Hollywood. Many in the community would describe her as a selfless volunteer with a passion for giving. Her commitment to her community was evident through her work with the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen where she was awarded Rotarian of the Year, a Paul Harris Fellow and later an Honorary Lifetime Membership. Vickie also acted as a Director with the Delta Sports Hall of Fame, as a Team Lead at the Delta Hospice Cottage, and volunteered for a season making soup for Food on the Corner. In 2014, she was honoured as Delta’s Citizen of the Year, where the recognition banquet handout read “Vickie has a positive spirit, and gets things done …”

One of Vickie’s greatest accomplishments in the community was spearheading the Rotary waterpark and musical garden at Diefenbaker Park. She also later became an advisor on the Ladner Rotary Waterpark.

Vickie was a passionate reader, and her walls are lined with shelves housing a diversity of novels, biographies, and travel books. She often had books in triplicate, so that she could share them with her friends. Vickie was extraordinary at trivia and often knew all the answers during Jeopardy! She was also extremely artistic enjoying live theatre, painting, singing, and decorating.

Vickie was blessed with the “spark”. She could light up any party with her colourful style and accessories.

She was also the “hostess with the mostest”, and held many functions at her home with Don; from football parties, to tea parties, to the most elaborate of kids dress-up birthday parties.

WAITHE, Thomas J. February 16, 1925 − October 26, 2019

In the Spring of 2014, Vickie received the devastating diagnosis. While this terminal diagnosis did not define her, it did inform the route of her journey for the next five and a half years. With her family by her side, Vickie valiantly fought the fight, and became a medical miracle in the process. During this time, and without a single complaint, she continued to live her best life, and enjoyed many trips and amazing moments with her family and friends. Her zest for life was a true inspiration to everyone she encountered.

Vickie touched the lives of many in her community and across the globe and her loving spirit - her wit and energy will be deeply missed. The family has received many condolences from across the world which read “I’m so sorry that we’ve lost OUR mom” - a true tribute to Vickie’s lasting legacy within the hearts of the many who loved her.

The family would like to especially thank the following: Dr. Puneet Bains, who has provided the most encouraging, thoughtful, and thorough oncology care for the past 4 years; Her GP for over 30 years Dr. Tom Martin; Dr. Barb Molowsky and Dr. Alan Nichol; Xuan Hua, her amazing assistant (who became a part of our family); The incredible team at the Lion’s Gate Hospital oncology department - we will miss our Friday afternoons together; Those who provided excellent care to Vickie at Delta Hospital; The Team members of Vickie’s Victors - who rode every year to raise funds for the BC Lung Association; and finally to the countless friends and family who supported Vickie with visits, phone calls, love, and encouragement. You know who you are, and we appreciate you so very much.

A celebration of life will be held on November 7, 2019, 4pm, at the South Delta Baptist Church: 1988 56 St, Delta, BC V4L 2B1. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Delta Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.

DeBoer, Saakje Sadie (nee Kingma) Sadie passed away peacefully on October 17, 2019 with her family by her side.

Sadie was born in the Netherlands in 1929, she immigrated to Canada and started dairy farming on 88th Street in Delta in 1958.

She will be missed and forever remembered by her family Clarence, Monica, Nick, Alex, Michael, Karin and many dear friends.

Sadie worked hard her whole life and had a work ethic like no other.

She was known for her kindness, care and love for everyone she knew.

She loved gardening, visiting with close friends and creating her famous noon farm lunches for all the guys.

Her pride and joy were her two grandsons Nick and Alex. The relationship that they had with grandma was a special one. It brought her great delight to have chauffeured farm tours with the boys behind the wheel.

A special thank you to Sadie’s caring and devoted caregivers Norma and Lexi who truly became her dear friends.

The family would also like to thank the amazing team at Irene Thomas Hospice, you made her last days truly wonderful.

KENNEDY, Margaret Ann Dickson (nee McElwain) August 18, 1920 - October 6, 2019 Mom, Nana, Great Nana passed peacefully at North Crest Care Centre, Delta, having led a long, full life. Margaret is pre-deceased by Hugh, her husband of 62 years, daughters Ann (Ed) Claggett, and Mary Lou (Dave) Witzel. She is survived by daughters Judy Quan, Janis (Bill) Hinde, former son-in-law Hal Montgomery, 9 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren, her brother Howard (Joan) McElwain and sister Ann (Richard) Ford.

Margaret was born on the hottest summer day in Winnipeg to parents May and Sammie.

Shortly after, the young family moved to BC, settling in the Vancouver area.

Many summers at Hopkins Landing began Margaret’s love of the ocean and all it has to offer. At the age of 16, awarded the YMCA Jr. Life Saver Award, and being a great swimmer herself, she began a lifelong interest teaching young children to swim. Gambier Island is where she and Hugh spent summers with their family.

Then in 1958 moved with their four daughters to Clinton BC, to the TR Bar Ranch, a raw dairy and beef cattle operation. Margaret was involved in many activities and convened the 94th Annual Clinton May Ball in 1962. Back at the coast in Delta, Margaret worked hard with others fundraising to secure the successful start-up of Delta Hospital and in later years was instrumental in beginning the Low Vision Support Group. She and Hugh enjoyed living on Salt Spring Island in a log home they built, as well as many happy hours boating, fishing and simply exploring the beautiful scenic coast of BC with friends. Margaret will be remembered fondly by many extended family and friends who will recall her love of music, all things Scottish, a good joke well told and entertaining around the family dining table.

A private family celebration will be held at a later date.

HODGSON, THOMAS Russell

HARDEN, Muriel Ernestine (nee Peel) August 21, 1924 - October 03, 2019 Ernestine passed away peacefully at the age of 95 with family at her side, at Kelowna Hospice House where her husband of 61 years died ten years earlier.

She was the elder of two daughters born in Cabri, Saskatchewan to farming parents Doris and Wilfred whom she adored. In 1937, after trying to outlast the Great Depression, the family abandoned the farm and moved to Calgary. There she graduated from Crescent Heights Collegiate Institute and then from RN training at Calgary General Hospital. During her training she met a young airman, Arthur, from New Zealand, who was participating in the WW2 Commonwealth Air Training Plan. They married in 1948 and over the course of their life together lived in Winnipeg, Vancouver, Burnaby (where their children were born), Auckland NZ for 3 years in the mid ‘60s, Richmond, Tsawwassen (where she was a nurse at Tsawwassen Medical Clinic), after retirement 28 years on Salt Spring Island and finally, Kelowna. They raised five children, built three houses, landscaped properties, created English-style gardens, travelled, hiked, camped, canoed the Bowron Lakes, cruised, and did some sailing. They even met the Queen. Ernestine was grateful to have seen “a bit of the world”.

But deep in her soul, with her love of farmlands, farm animals - especially roosters and horses, fields of golden wheat, and wide-open skies, she was a prairie girl throughout her life. It made her heart sing.

For most of her life she was very active in the United Church of Canada. She was a Sunday school teacher, church elder, choir member and leader. She was a Girl Guide Leader, Brownie Brown Owl, active in the Air Cadets Women’s Auxiliary, in seniors’ choirs and bell ringers, and a Saskatchewan Roughriders and Toronto Blue Jays fan. She knitted, crocheted, did fine needlework, and sewed dance costumes for her girls. She excelled at baking and at preserving fresh vegetables and fruit, as well as making pickles and jams - skills she learned to appreciate growing up on the farm, when one had to make use of what one had and not waste a single thing. Her farm years formed her and informed her throughout her life. One of her favourite sayings was, “It’s as crooked as a cow’s hind leg”. Her prairie grit sustained her, especially through several difficult health challenges, which she approached with pragmatism, determination, and grace.

Ernestine was very thankful for her full life. She tried her best, loved, and was loved.

She is greatly missed by her children, Leanne (Don) Campbell, Auckland NZ; Maureen (Steve) Miller, West Vancouver; Rhonda (Kirk) Caza, Bermuda; Eric (Cathie) and Tony (Anita) both of Kelowna; grandchildren Jonathan, Dana, Andrea, Tony, Dan, Tim, Mike, Kevin, Michelle, Jennifer, and Matthew; greatgrandchildren Kaycee, Taylor, Michael, Ethan, Charlie, and Thomas; her sister Shirley (Chuck) Noltie and family of Toronto; and other relatives and friends.

Thanks to her friends and staff at Sunrise Village and Mountainview Village, who made her last ten years more enjoyable. Thanks also to Dr. Clarke at the BC Cancer Agency and the nurses, doctors and staff at Kelowna General Hospital.

A very special thanks to the staff and doctors at Kelowna Hospice House who cared for her so tenderly and compassionately in her final days.

Joan Margaret Wiseman passed peacefully on Sunday, October 13th at Mountain View Manor.

Joan was born to Albert and Iris White in London England on April 15, 1923. Mom served in the British Army ATS during WWII where she met her future husband Duncan who was a pilot with the RCAF. They were married in May, 1944. Mom came to Canada as a war bride shortly after. On dad’s return from the war they settled in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan where dad worked for Canada Post and the where their two children were born.

They were transferred to Calgary, Alberta a few years later.

Mom was an avid bridge player, a champion crib player and she loved to shop, never missing a scratch and save. She always enjoyed travelling, especially her trips to Palm Desert and she was the first one to have her bags packed. Mom faced the greatest challenge of her life when she lost her eyesight at 86 years. She was determined to live life on her own, despite the difficulties the blindness presented. Her wonderful sense of humour, feisty spirit and good dose of subborness was what kept mom going as long as she did. She was truly remarkable and greatly admired for how she coped in her situation. Audio books became her way of life and she would go through 2-3 books a week.

Mom was predeceased by her husband Duncan Roy in 1970 and made her final move to Tsawwassen a few years later to be with family. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by daughter Gail (Rod), son Brian (Joanne), grandchildren Jeff (Lisa), Paula (Vernon), Paul (Vanessa) and Derek as well as great grandchildren Mason and Kieran.

Heartfelt thanks to Sharon Sutherland for all her loving care and support that she gave mom during the last few months.

Russ, as he preferred to be known, was born June 25, 1923, in Ste. Walburg Saskatchewan to Thomas and Pearl Hodgson. a He married his life partner, Patricia LeFleur on September 12, 1946 and for 56 years they continued many adventures until Patricia passed in 2002.

Russ had explicitly asked for no service be held for him. In lieu of a service, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation in Russ’s name.

Russ will be missed by many family close and far, and all friends.
